Glory (1989): 8/10
A well-acted and stunningly directed historical film portraying the sacrifice of the first all-black regiment in the American Civil War.
It's a bit melodramatic—especially with Ferris Bueller always looking like he's about to burst into tears—but overall worth watching if you like historical dramas or war films in general. Even if you don't care much about the story you can get something out of the terrific cinematography.

Trying to catch up on old flicks while this quarantine is going on. So Jack Lemmon was the originator of AirBnb  Usually not much into older flicks, I can appreciate them for the time they are made and the mark they made on film. However most of them usually feel like a chore to watch. I usually watch them for the experience then I'm good. This movie surprised me though, it still had it's moments but for the most part felt almost modern. I'd watch this one again down the road. It was tackling some sort of dark issues not many movies were tackling then. Infidelity, suicide, depression. It got sort of dark in some moments which I was very surprised about. Plus I sort of identified with Lemmon's character getting kicked around. I'm sort of a pushover myself. Shirley was awesome in it as well.
I see why this movie is so revered still today. It has a timeless feel to it. As far as older movies go this one I enjoyed a lot. I wasn't looking at how much time I had left in the movie like I usually do with older flicks.
I'd give it about a 3.8 out of 5.

I was skeptical as to how stars Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster would mesh. They ended up working well together as each of their differences accentuate the positives of the other. I think the best part of the movie is when they are competing or showing off. Otherwise it's still a rip roaring entertaining kind of a western. Not a great movie but a fun watch.

A most peculiar movie. Lead rôle is played by Tilda Swinton’s daughter & she’s a very good actor. Couldn’t make head or tails of the 1st 30 minutes or so, but I guess it got somewhat better.
Amazing thing is there’s gonna be The Souvenir II, which makes absolutely no sense.

It's certainly not Sergio Leone's best but I never expected it to be. It was still well worth the 2 1/2 hour investment even if scenes occasionally seem to go into the next like something was cut out. Rod Steiger and James Coburn are the two stars forming an unlikely partnership, and unlike a lot of other westerns, these two become so close that I thought they were going to be lovers. There are so many explosions and mass killings that I often felt like I was watching a war movie, not a bad thing.

Loved the music, liked the way it was done, found the musical aspects a little distracting, although I think it would be superb on stage.

Ginger Snaps (2000) - 5.5/10. Found this movie on a YouTube channel recommendation. Definitely better than the mindless stuff that I was watching over the past week. Now every movie can't be the Shining, but still falls under the same general premise of stupid teens making stupid choices. But this is a wee bit smarter than the fifth grader! Worth a watch.

Probably I am looking for Fellini in the horror genre. So probably my expectations are a bit too high. Not a huge fan of horror to begin with, these movies are just for me to tick the "I have seen it" box. If it's ghosts and ghouls, I can still get with it. Werewolf, Zombie, Aliens, I automatically start my rating from negative. Not to mention the movie which are gory just for the sake of it. Disgust is just not very entertaining nor artistic.

Was on Film4 some time back. I was quite mixed on it - didn't think the character arcs were very believable and the story was as predictable as stink but it remained watchable imo. It's probably a generous rating - I wavered between 5/10 and 6/10 for most of it and I tend to err on the side of generosity most of the time.

That is what I find quaint about Bollywood (the Hindi language industry), the movies are absolutely bonkers when it comes to the plot, but they remain enjoyable, even though you kinda wonder what the heck is going on. And occasionally they would drop some great films, like maybe one in every 5 years. The other regional languages produce faaar better products!

The Wailing (2016) - 7.5/10. A masterful creation. Easily the best in the horror category for me for the decade. Not sure if anything good will come out in 2020 to beat it. Tried to watch it at for two consecutive nights, but couldn't. Made it to 20 mins on Day 1 and around 35 on Day 2. So finished it in the afternoon. The spooky atmosphere, the cinematography, the grizzly killings, all were melded in a sweet bucket of ice cream. Leaves Hereditary faaaaar behind.

The Force Awakens (3/10).
A film about the existential inevitability of war and conflict even while in the realm of the vast cosmos and time while juxtaposing the social structures of genre epic fantasy, pop culture and space operatic themes, yet it falls short of its intent due to the derivative nature of its characters, settings and archetypes resulting in an ironic shallowness and colourful yet inauthentic story arcs which subsequently distills the saga into the inevitable realm of reboot rather than sequel which is unfortunate given the predicable size of the audience, the wealth of the canon, and of course the proportion of the investments, in terms of both fan expectation and money which predictably has led to a veritable avalanche of (unsubstantiated, granted) accusations regarding the incorruptibility of the critic superstructure in the face of the overarching Disney media juggernaut and all that might imply, while even if this effect is subconscious - much can be said about the effect, particularly in particular reference to the film's ability to exploit firmly engraved nostalgic psychosomatic energy which is also maintained by sociological underpinnings inherent in the global pop culture phenomenon which is Star Wars.

I'm always mixing this with Bloodsport and half of the stuff I'm expecting is actually in the other one. I don't even know why I've watched 'em both multiple times because I don't particularly like either of them. This whole tournament/competition plot is about the worst martial arts film story there is and the fight choreography is quite weak too. At least the main villain is good and sort of intimidating.

For a horror movie its quite a long grind. 156 odd minutes. I wouldn't say it picks up or goes down in any way. At most, the pace picks up by 10-15% in the last 40 mins. But as the movie goes on, the movie becomes even more visually stunning. More like a scotch than a tequila. The turmoil at the end is very very pleasing to see. Just stick with it, is all i can say, or maybe do it in two sittings.

The Tunnel (2011) - 5/10. An Aussie movie (Sydney). Trying to rip off REC in so many ways. But the movie is not bad. Decently acted. I am not sure how expensive Australian movies are in general, but these found footage movies are cheap to make and easy to produce. Just add another on top of the endless pile of found footage movies that were coming out in the past decade. Only complain, the movie doesn't conclude, so the wholesome experience is lost. Not sure that was a smart choice for a one off movie.

Only seen one other Bergman film, The Seventh Seal, which was a bit of a chore to get through. This one is not. Never thought I'd see an R and R flick this well done. Loved the story which has all kinds of little things to pick through and it looks amazing (no surprise there as Bergmans' Seventh Seal is one of the best looking pics ever). Max is one of those actors who gets lost in the greatest ever conversation and I wonder if it has to do with the fact that he wasn't afraid to do films such as Strange Brew and Flash Gordon which are classics in their own right.

I wouldn't say it picks up but there are more horror-ish scenes as the movie progresses. The tone of the movie definitely shifts after about 45 minutes in when it becomes more supernatural horror/thriller and less quirky. I think it's fascinating movie that gets better every single time I see it, but it is one that either you going to love or hate.

Presence of Mind (1999)
Pretty decent filming of The Turn of the Screw (take with a grain of salt as I haven't read the book). As a European movie, it's quite a bit more direct in its sexual innuendo than say The Innocents. The Spanish villa is just as great setting as well. I'd say it's on par with the more famous filming (they both have pros and cons).

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (2015) - 7/10. Felt in the mood for some documentaries today. So turned this on and it was a fascinating watch. The Union: The Business Behind Getting High (2007) - 7/10. Another good one. An inside look into the Pot business and how it worked back then. I thought it wouldn't be too political, but it absolutely was. Looking at it now, it's kind of nice to see how the world's opinion has changed in the past 13 years on marijuana. Good watch. Although I would have liked it if there was a counter argument presented in the movie, coz this was all pro-weed. But then again, since we get so much from government and law enforcement, this documentary didn't need to have it.

+ unlike most modern B-horrors this actually looks like a proper movie
+ acting is OK
- the script is immensely cliched, predictable and stale
- actually it kinda feels like they didn't have a script but went with what cliche popped in the head at the moment
Also, is that Matthew Whedon Joss Whedon's brother (according to Wiki he has a brother of that name)?

I think this is the western that I had already seen, but had been the longest since I had last seen it, probably 35 years when I was in my early teens. I remembered it as a great western, but that was a time when I had only seen a very small amount, mostly starring Clint Eastwood. After having seen many other westerns, I now see this as good, but not great or even very good. The big drawback for me is that I didn't feel the character or atmosphere that great westerns have, and the town looked very much like a set that was built in one day. It's kind of a weird one in a surreal type of way, and that's good and bad for me. There's plenty of action and some good one liners. Clint is Clint and I loved the midget. I enjoyed it.

About ratings, Shawshank is a 10. Everything else is lower than that. You would barely ever see me dish out 8+ on anything. 6 - Good, 7 - Awesome. 8 and above I normally reserved for legendary stuff, you know, Fritz Lang like movies. Something that moves me emotionally.

Scream (1996) - 5/10. Somehow I do feel this movie hasn't aged well. Probably coz it's a re-watch and I know what is going to happen. Even if it was a first time watch I probably wouldn't score it more than a 5. The grainy pictures of the 70s and 80s and ketchup blood made the genre a bit repetitive and dull but charming none the less.

Gretel & Hansel (2020)
With his third film, Oz Perkins continues his downward trend (February is great and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House is good). This retelling of a familiar fairy tale has some nice moments but unlike his prior films, it fails to maintain the atmosphere for the whole movie. It's disjointed, visually uneven and only passable acted (especially the boy playing Hansel was quite bad, also hated Gretel's narration). Quite a disappointment, really.

I'm not generally a fan of time era pieces like this, so take this with a grain of salt. This movie could easily be a 2 or 4 depending on what kind of mood I'm in. Chalamet is great in this movie as are all the actresses, with Ronan giving the best performance in my eyes. The first two thirds of the movie dragged for me and could have been trimmed to reduce the 2+ hour runtime, but the last third was excellent.

This was different. A Colonel arrives at a Pacific NW mental hospital for military vets and begins using unorthodox methods to treat the patients. His plan, pretty much, is to let the inmates run the asylum. This leads to some funny stuff from some of the patients but is it working? Kind of a "what the hell?" movie that gets pretty dark in the second half but it eventually all comes together, if you can make it that long. The opening song is terrible. It gets better after that. Well acted and stars Stacy Keach, with appearances by Jason Miller, Robert Loggia, Joe Spinell and Tom Atkins

That's more than I gave it. I don't seem to have written any sort of review of it but here's what I said of it in Slasher HoF2 thread:
I actually rewatched Scream about a week ago. I found it just as bad as I remembered and it required some willpower to finish. It's a parody of horror films trying to convey us that horror films are stupid and only proper way to watch them is to have a beer and laugh at the screen. To me it's the epitome of everything bad in American horror and it irritates me that such a film has become an iconic horror film itself. Just my opinion, that is.
I seem to have rated it 3/10 on IMDb. There are hundreds (if not thousands) horror films I like more, and even with my general dislike of slashers, it's not even good among them.
Iroquois
04-19-20, 01:31 PM
I wouldn't call Scream a parody so much as a deconstruction - the slasher was already an inherently limited and easily-mocked sub-genre before Scream came out so Craven actively works to first break it down by having characters be aware of the tropes and rebuild it by showing that this knowledge isn't guaranteed to save them when the danger turns out to be real. Of course, that doesn't mean I don't find it at least a little obnoxious anyway (and it comes awfully close to the 2-hour mark, which really isn't ideal for most horrors or comedies). And yes, I would still say that there are far better slashers/horrors out there.

I don't evaluate movies in their genre. Movies are movies. If I say Chinatown is an 8, and put Scream as an 8 too. It would be disrespectful to the former!
And if I have to pick a slasher, Halloween is just better.

A French action film that isn't innovative at all but manages to be decent entertainment for its short duration. It's French, so it's somewhat violent (not Extremely violent, though) and it has a good attitude. Passable low budget fun, nothing more, nothing less.

I agree. It's one of the best pictures ever made, IMO. Just heard that Allen Garfield died. He was really good as the surveillance electronics thief Bernie Moran. But everyone was superb in that one! Even Cindy Williams.

Little Women (2019)
rating_3
I'm not generally a fan of time era pieces like this, so take this with a grain of salt. This movie could easily be a 2 or 4 depending on what kind of mood I'm in. Chalamet is great in this movie as are all the actresses, with Ronan giving the best performance in my eyes. The first two thirds of the movie dragged for me and could have been trimmed to reduce the 2+ hour runtime, but the last third was excellent.
How would you compare it to the 1949 original, which I thought was excellent? I haven't so far investigated the '19 version, fearing too much PC...

Thanks for the recommendation hellstorm, as this was a truly endearing (yet enraging) film. It doesn't get too in the weeds to discuss the legal process behind scheduling court dates and such, but that was a significant crux in determining the outcome here. It's painful to think about what could have been if common sense had been employed....

Ucho - 8.5/10
It's a fine movie, and very well executed. I'll paste the IMDB description, since I don't want to spoil it, but if there are some who have seen it, we can always use the Spoiler tool on here to get more in-depth.
"After coming home from a Party gathering one night, a Czechoslovakian official becomes convinced that he is about to be the subject of a political purge and tries to do damage control, while also dealing with his turbulent marriage."
A good way I'd describe it is "The Lives of Others" meets "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
I'm going to look into this movie more, but very eager to throw this out there "before its too late!"
I loved how the protagonist had the camera right on him, speaking to him, which also gives the viewer the paranoia they are experiencing (mostly him, but also his wife). The flashbacks are used in a great way, because in real life, someone who has a feeling of being purged will look back and think "Maybe it was THIS, or maybe it was THAT"..

The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (rewatch): 9/10
Hey, you're entitled to your opinion, I've just never heard anyone say anything negative about this movie before...way to stand your ground.
I wasn't particularly impressed by Fargo either, but I did think Marco was a bit harsh and unfair. It's a decent movie overall, but I do agree that it's overrated. 2 stars is kind of an unfathomably low rating for something that's at least an above average movie. Personally I'd give Fargo 3 stars. It had some really interesting moments, and some dull ones. I thought the bit about the car salesman and how he gets found out by the female cop was done very well, and also the crazy one of the two killers was a very interesting character. William Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare gave excellent performances.

Greed (Eric von Stronheim, 1924) 4.5
It is easy to see why the discussion of this film is always surrounding the mutilation of hours and hours of footage that von Stronheim filmed and planned to include in the film's release, because even what is remaining is absolutely phenomenal. I can picture a vision akin to Griffith's Intolerance, using performance and imagery across different timelines and cutting between these to tell a powerful tale of evil. Whether it's the sweltering image of the sun shining, or the intense anger radiating from the face of Gibson Gowland, there are so many terrific sequences that help to create a tale that's suspenseful and terrifying.
The Death of Stalin (Armando Iannucci, 2017) 3
The concept of combining humour with the story of the death of Stalin makes for some hilarious results with many laugh-out-loud moments but I felt that the film struggled to find a wholly convincing way to sustain its narrative for the duration of the film. Many of the jokes and actions repeat along the same lines, with the film never attempting any sort of ambition in the way it is constructed or captured. Enjoyable, but nothing memorable.
Castle in the Sky (Hayao Miyazaki, 1986) 3
An enjoyable Miyazaki film, with an entertaining story but I did find it to be a little long and overwrought, without some of the subtly and insightful world analysis contained within some of the director's best works.
Sense and Sensibility (Ang Lee, 1995) 2.5
This literary adaptation feels successful in many ways as it manages to keep the story clear and concise, with some enjoyable performances from the likes of Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman. Once again though I thought there was something missing, that there could have been more interesting cinematic ways of telling the story and conveying the depth of feeling and emotions. Everything felt quite straightforward and not overly compelling in its construction. Still, I thought it was decent enough.
A Countess from Hong Kong (Charlie Chaplin, 1967) 4.5
One of Charlie Chaplin's final films, this combines all sorts of elements that we love about the director with slapstick performances from Brando and Loren. It's an incredibly warm film with lots of clever scenes, with Chaplin using the sets almost as a character in which characters move in and out to great comedic effect. I have heard that people don't like Brando in this film and he's certainly more awkward than someone like Cary Grant would have been, but I don't think it's a complete failure and in fact, makes the film more interesting and even biographical in the way his character sets up an impenetrable barrier for himself that makes communication with others difficult. The whole thing felt like a weird mixture of different times, part silent cinema, part later Hollywood rom-com. Chaplin is always able to create feelings of real human happiness and sadness, and the ending of this film is for me one of the purest and most perfect moments he has ever captured.
The Last of the Mohicans (Michael Mann, 1992) 1.5
I really like Michael Mann as a director, but some of his stunning visual compositions can not save this film from being a bit of a mess. It moves forward so incredibly quickly, with big set-pieces on top of each other, taking so many tonal shifts in the process. The speed in which everything unfolds and the seriousness of the characters made it difficult for me to become invested in the emotional drama which when combined with action sequences and the music felt very full-on. There's a good film in here and as I said, I enjoyed some of the photography, but the end result didn't work for me.
The Man in the White Suit (Alexander Mackendrick, 1951) 3
An enjoyable Ealing comedy that looks at the story of a young chemist who invents a suit that can last forever without damage. The plot takes a look at the roles of labour and capital, without becoming too didactic, taking an affectionate look at the working-class environment and people of Britain. It has some funny moments, some warm characters and relationships and the plot itself is interesting enough to make this an enjoyable but not spectacular film. I felt similarly about The Ladykillers and The Lavender Hill Mob.

My patience ran out after the first X-Men, but to my credit I lasted another 5 movies and another 20 mins on top of it. But Captain America was a bridge too far!
I just don't get the hype with Marvel movies. Probably coz childhood was mixed with other comics. I probably won't rate any of them more than 5.5.

I last watched this about 5 years ago. I had to watch it again because my memory had it right around the border for making my westerns list. It's still there. Clint is great here, as is Chef Dan George and the guy who plays the dean in Animal House. The action and one-liners are awesome. I just don't get Clint's love for Sondra Locke. She's an ok actress at best and she plays these characters that are supposed to be attractive and alluring, and she's very far from either of those. Fortunately she doesn't have a huge role.

Remarkably the first time I've seen this. Based on the Cormac McCarthy novel. About a Father and his son scavenging on their journey following a global event. They aim to make it to the coast for the temperature and hope to meet like minded folk without falling prey to the feral remnants of society..
Effective and dramatic but overwrought a bit of a real slog...I *did* "enjoy" it and the performances were top notch. Compared to the other McCarthy adaptations I've seen (No Country for Old Men and Child of God), I'd put it slightly above both.

You're asking if X-Men: The Last Stand is from X-Men? Or are you saying you only watched the first X-Men movie? X-Men: The Last Stand is the third X-Men movie, and by far the worst of what I've seen. Logan is a movie about Wolverine set in the future that came out in 2017 and was celebrated for "deconstructing the Super Hero genre," but in actuality it was full of Super Hero movie cliches and was mistaken for a deconstruction because it borrowed heavily from Shane which was a deconstruction of the Western genre (and not a very good one I might add). There's a scene where Professor X is sitting on a bed watching Shane, and the girl playing X-23 asks, "What's this?" And he says, "It's a great classic." While even the scene they showed depicted exceptionally awful wooden acting. That made me laugh.
I actually liked the two Deadpool movies though. I thought I was going to hate Deadpool. Even when I went to the movie theaters with my brother and my dad, and they wanted to see Deadpool, I just went and saw Brooklyn instead. But later I gave it a chance and it was actually half-decent. I liked the second Deadpool movie a lot though, saw it in theaters 3 times.
I tried watching the Wakanda movie, but the cringe was too strong. I saw the first Thor movie, unfortunately. I would rather go to the dentist and get another root canal than watch a Marvel movie. Not even joking or exaggerating. I can sit in the dentist chair in mild comfort while she drills and scrapes away at a numb tooth, only occasionally wincing. That's less torture than a typical Marvel movie. When I reluctantly watched the first Avengers movie because the group of people I was with at the time wanted to watch it, it was soul destroying.
I left for work in the middle of the battle at the climax and it was just a relief to get out of there.

I'm reading and laughing at these comments. Good stuff. Mind you all, I am being very generous with my scores on those MCU films. The only reason I am watching them is because I need something to occupy my time during quarantine. To be honest, I am pushing myself through these films. Some I found myself surprisingly enjoying, others not so much. The scores I am giving them are based on just that. Superhero movies were never my kind of films to begin with. If I were to score them based on story/plot/acting, they would be much lower.

God's Not Dead (2014)
This is one of those Christian movies with terrible acting, but in spite of the acting and pretty boring cinematography and sets, the story was quite good. I was watching it during down-time at work so didn't get to watch it all in one sitting and had quite a few interruptions, and I found that during those breaks I really wanted to know what was going to happen next.

Not that motorcycle handle head gear. In other scenes with the hair open! That was good stuff! Deadpool is something that i enjoyed, coz it know exactly what it is. A slapstick like comedy. The others have the problem of trying to take themselves too seriously! And not too mention their impact on the industry is not that great either. 2019 was probably the first year it was a little peaceful, since they didn't release too many!

Really liked this first time through. Then I watched it again and loved it. I think the less you know going in the better off you'll be but it may be a tough go in the beginning. IF you can make it through the opening scene which is one 37 minute take of a z-grade zombie flick, then you are in for a real treat, especially the last half hour. The last half hour is fantastic and had me rolling a few times. This is not some gory horror film. It's pretty unique. POM!

Rear Window - 1954
Another Hitchcock film I have shamefully not seen. Finally dug down and watch it online couple days ago. I really enjoyed this flick. The camera work and cinematography must have blown people's minds back in the day. Hitchcock really does bring this little neighborhood alive on screen. Grace Kelly is a fox and James Stewart is great but his voice always gets me with that drawl. Kept me engaged until the very end which was very suspenseful, which makes sense from the Master of Suspense.
Think it's my 3rd Hitchcock I've seen. I'd have to check. But out of the 3 I've seen I'd go:
1.) North By Northwest
2.) Rear Window
3.) Psycho
Vertigo is next on the list to watch eventually.
I'd give it 3.8 out of 5.

The Blue Angel (Josef von Sternberg, 1930) 4
I fell in love with von Sternberg after watching Underworld and The Docks of New York for the pre-1930s film countdown. He's a very visual director who uses lighting excellently to convey the dark worlds of the characters. From all three films, I admire his honesty in tackling quite mature adult themes. He doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable and has certainly inspired many other directors.
This film was the first of his famous collaboration with Marlene Dietrich, and she is excellent in the lead role as a local cabaret dancer Lola who entices a college professor played by Emile Jannings. What I liked about the films are the contrast between repeated scenes. We see the college classroom often early on and revisit it near the end. We see Lola perform the same songs at different points, with different meanings. The relationship between the two characters is brutal and sometimes difficult to watch. A really fascinating film.

La Chinoise (Jean-Luc Godard, 1967) 4
As most people around here know, I am a big fan of Godard and have been recently trying to fill some of the gaps I have in his filmography. One of my favourites of his is Weekend released in the same year, his other most overtly political film from the decade.
In this film, Godard looks at various young communists, each with varying opinions on communist theory, organisation and revolution. As someone who has been heavily involved in politics in the last few years, I found this to be a sometimes relatable and very affectionate look at young people involved in politics. As with Godard's other works, he's interested in looking at different formats and theories of implementing similar ideas. He doesn't seem to take sides, sometimes it feels like a celebration of its topic and others like a parody. There are a few standout sequences including one near the end on a train with Francis Jeanson, looking at the role of violence in achieving change. He doesn't stop there though and follows this up a scene that becomes all the more powerful and meaningful considering the discussions that have preceded it.

Naked (Mike Leigh, 1993) 2
I admire this film in many ways for being willing to tackle some strong themes and present us with some very brutal characters and images. It's unflinching in its vision, and it's quite a pessimistic bleak one.
David Thewlis is particularly admirable in the lead role as a rapist on the run, who tries hitching up at his exes flat in London before taking to the streets. He then embarks on an odyssey of sorts around the city, bumping into various odd characters and sharing many philosophical conversations along the way. These people are mainly people who are at the very bottom of society in many ways, they have nothing left and have no shame or worry about their actions and people judging them. I just wasn't sure what the point was behind showing us such misery, and such weird characters. It didn't really interest me beyond its direct surface level, feeling shallow and empty. People might say that's the point.

Chungking Express (Wong Kar-wai, 1994) 3
I had only seen a couple of Wong's films before this one and had enjoyed them, especially In the Mood for Love. This film starts immediately with a frenzy of interesting visuals that plunge us into the lives of our main characters. The colours and use of sounds throughout this film really immerse you into the stories.
I really enjoyed the first story, which seemed to me to end quite early on in the film. The second story is enjoyable too, and the two main characters give really likable quirky performances but I felt again like this would have worked as a shorter tale as part of a greater film. I thought we had a couple more stories and characters, cutting across each other, being more ambitious. Instead the film ended up becoming quite a straightforward, ordinary tale.

Safety Last! (Fred C. Newmeyer & Sam Taylor, 1923) 3.5
I am a big fan of the silent cinema of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, but this was my first time watching something from Harold Lloyd. The plot follows a young man who goes off to work in the city who writes to his fiance, misleading her about his wealth. As she comes to visit, he sees an opportunity to actually make them the money they need by pulling off an elaborate stunt to scale a huge department store building.
What follows is a very long stunt sequence full of hilarious moments and astounding technical work. It's a very famous sequence which I had seen some parts of before and it didn't disappoint. It's executed very well and is thrilling to watch but for me, the film didn't reach the levels of some of the more engaging narratives of some of my favourite silent films such as The Gold Rush and Steamboat Bill, Jr..

The Host (2006) - 6.5/10. I was putting this off for a while assuming that it will be scary. And I desperately wanted to watch something in B&W movie, coz its been a while! But couldn't make up my mind on what to watch. So gave this a go anyway. It was a fun. Definitely not one of Ho's best work. But still pretty good. The CGI hasn't aged well. But that's no deal-breaker. The movie leans towards a family trying to survive rather than the monster being the main focus. Good stuff. I did notice some strong anti-American flavours in the movie! Or at least some strong notes of American military being conniving folks. I don't know if it's intentional or just how the plot is.

I saw this years ago and was lucky enough to find it again. A look into the behavior of football hooligans in Czechoslovakia and the nihilistic traits therefore. It's shot well and makes its point. Its aim of depicting sport as a totem pole for the disenfranchised is well done. Would not class this as a "shocker". Anyone who has been caught on a train with "ultras" will know the feeling...dread.

Surface level social commentary within what I felt to be a well-directed and entertaining crime thriller.
Extraction (2020)
After mostly positive impressions here and elsewhere, I probably had my expectations set too high. Technically it's great and action is decently brutal. Sadly the story (and characters) are ripped from countless far-eastern actions and Extraction offers nothing new except better production values. I also hated the fight scene with the streek kids (I let people guess why). Still, it's somewhat OK action but I really wish that the technical talent would have been put to better use.

Low budget take on of a community fighting against a drugs problem that has claimed and continues to claim the lives of those nearest in the town.
A few faces recognisable here Sherilyn Fenn, Cathy Moriarty, Nicholas Turturro. The story is well told and as a microcosm of a larger programme works well. Some of the acting dips and wouldn't look out of place in a latter "Death Wish" film. It all hung together OK though.

This is one of the most violent and relentlessly grim westerns I've seen. Typical revenge story and it seems to stand still at times but it's effective. It looks great and occasionally feels like a horror movie. The lead character had zero charisma but it works. Only real complaint is the ridiculous pop songs that suddenly play with about 20 minutes left and then again during the end credits.

Yeah, that's a major stylistic blunder. All in all, I'm pretty much in agreement with your assertion.

I watched this because it's one of the last I hadn't seen from the existing westerns list. Rod Steiger gives it his best shot as a disillusioned soldier on the losing side of the civil war who goes and joins the Sioux. Charles Bronson stands around looking strong and says a few words. It was ok for an 80 minute watch but I thought it was pretty dated.
Big (Penny Marshall, 1988) 3.5 7/10
That's like... the highest rating I've ever seen you give.
Martyrs (2008) - 6/10. Kinda weird rating this one. From what I heard in the reviews I expected a lot more blood and a lot more dead bodies. It's quite a different kind of a movie. But to be honest, I still don't get the objective of keeping the women as prisoners. Seemed kind of a flimsy plot thread to hang a movie on. Who knows! Anything else and I would go into spoiler territory, so I should stop.
Yeah hell_storm2004 totally agree. The basic gist of story didn't do it for me and no spoilers. Opinions! :)
These are typical responses to the movie, and I must admit I felt the same way the first time I watched it too. It wasn't until my second watch that I actually payed attention to the dialogue and realised what the movie was actually about. It has surprisingly more depth that it seems if you're just looking for gore and aren't paying attention to the plot. For a violent movie about torture with really good gore effects it doesn't get much better than this in terms of actually having meaningful content.
If you were paying attention then you would know what the objective of torturing the women was (torturing them, not "keeping them as prisoners"), because there is a long conversation of dialogue spelling it out in detail, and it's the title of the movie. They also have a wall of art devoted to it.
I don't know what it is exactly, but I guess when you're anticipating gore it's hard to pay attention to dialogue. The second time I watched it I was much more interested in the movie itself as a whole, and that's why I started paying attention.
Tales that witness madness (1973)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/68/Geschichten%2C_die_zum_Wahnsinn_f%C3%BChren_Poster.jpg
One of those Horror Anthology films that has some good and some bad points. The production values are OK but some of the stories are rather thin (compared to, say, the "Tales from the Crypt...the Mr Tiger and Mel ones being particularly daft). Nice enough dated watching for an afternoon, the stories reminded me of the "Roald Dahls Tales of the Unexpected" that aired on UK TV in the 80s.

Windmere Children (2010) - 5/10. Not every holocaust story needs to be told, this was one of them. Doesn't have too much in it. Although the teen actors were better than most i guess. But this would have been better off as 30 mins on BBC Our World, not a whole movie. The ending was nicely done. But apart from that, offered very little.
The only upside was seeing Tim McInnery in something after Black Adder.

Death Ship (1080) - 5.2/10. A wee bit tighter writing and this might have been a classic. The premise is great i have to say. But it lacks a bit in probably every department, except the production design. A little better acting here, a little better direction there and this would have great. Certainly not violent of anything. The directors completely fluffed the ending i think by not providing some info, just doesn't feel well-rounded.

I rarely ever revisit a movie. First i thought I understood the movie wrong. So I googled the explanation of the ending, and nope, read the movie right. If "finding out" was the only thing that the gang intended, especially about "that" thing, I still think its a little weird. I expected two women just picking of people one by one and litres and litres of blood. Yes, it is clever than most lame movies that just amp the gore level up to 11 and go for shock value. This is definitely more nuanced than that.

I'm surprised this has an IMDb rating of 6.6 rather than being a well known classic. It's an unusual western in that there's no gunfights or bad guys, and that's not because it's a comedy or musical. I'm sorry but I had to watch this. I grew up as an adult watching most of Kevin's films and I just realized it was 15 years between the two times I met Jason Mewes. It was a lot better than I expected which is one of the reasons I hadn't seen it yet - I thought I would hate it since the only film I ever liked from the director was Repulsion. I actually wanted to hate it but it is a fantastic movie. One of the best I've ever seen at building tension scene to scene. One of my problems with the director's other films is they always seem to have poor pacing, they drag imo, but not this. It flies by. Mia was outstanding and the supporting cast was pretty gosh darn good as well.

Conan the Destroyer (1984)
I was a little tired and wanted to watch something that doesn't require brainpower. The second Conan is a kinda mediocre light fantasy film (a mixture of Italian barbarian films, early D&D adventures, and family films). As Conan filming, it's horrible though, and it's also not a fitting sequel to Milius' epic. I need to find the comic that's based on the original script to see how badly the studio ruined this. Still, it isn't bad and it has some fun moments.

Wizard of Oz
8/10.
Movies today receive a lot of criticism for their CGI, how they don't look "realistic", and yet if you look at movies with practical effects, they often look just as fake. In the DVD special features, the cast remark how "beautiful" the Munchkin set looked (and indeed it was beautiful), but when Dorothy first walked through the door into Oz, my first thought isn't "Wow, look how beautiful that is!", but, "Wow, look how fake that looks!, and "No, that doesn't look like a set at all!" ;)
Effects aside, I still enjoy this classic movie. Brings me back to the days when it only showed on TV once a year and the family was enchanted with it.
Another interesting fact I learned from watching the special features: The book did not include the dream aspect.

The Lodge (2020) - 5.5/10. "Scary as hell"... My rear-end! It is the same old story of people locked up in the snow. And the annoying aspect of everyone talking in a hushed voice when there is no intruder or ghosts around. It was almost impossible to hear the dialogues with the fan on! Didn't do much for me. Yes, Basic Instinct is an absolute classic. Michael Douglas at his conflicted best what a performance from Sharon Stone!
It's a bit cliche and "Hollywood." The psychology wasn't very realistic. I guess you can call it a classic in the same sense as Back to the Future, and Ghost Busters, but it's no Clockwork Orange or Seven Samurai.

It's a bad sign when I keep refreshing this (and other) sites because a movie is so boring. The only thing worth looking at was Liz Taylor - I think it was the longest her hair has ever been on the screen. Why didn't you like this movie?
I too was surprised. I've never seen "Fabulous" post any comments or answers, so she'll likely not respond.
I thought the film was highly unusual and provocative for it's day. Maggie Smith was fantastic as Brodie, and there was a nice part played by the veteran Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter) as the school's mistress. I watched it again last year and thought it held up nicely. It would have received an "R" rating then. Today it would be "PG"...;)

Extraction - 2020
Nothing else to do and I got my buddy's Netflix so I figured what the hell. I enjoy some Chris Hemsworth even if he is unfairly good looking. I think do has some chops. He brings it in some scenes here. Wish he would get a chance with like a Scorsese or someone like that one day. It's an enjoyable little action flick if you are looking for something exciting to watch. There is a knife fight with Hemsworth that was amazing. It was directed by a stuntman so that's probably why the action is so good. It's passable enough as a story to get by. But you will come here for the action for sure, not the character or story. Pretty generic in that terms. Also it's just mass killing of police officers, like it's a video game. Fun action but not very practical lol.

Lethal Weapon - 1987
Seen bits and parts of probably about everyone of them. Saw it on Netflix again and decided to take the time and actually watch it for once. I....was...not...impressed. I get it may have been really cool in 87 (year I was born ;)) but it doesn't hold up well. Some serious over acting. Plot thinks it's smarter then it is and the action is sort of silly. The end was cringy to me lol. Don't know not really my cup of tea.

Vertigo - 1958
So I finally bit down and watched this movie. I can see why everyone thinks the movie is so good. It does stay with you. The themes are for more articulate people to dissect. About Stewart's character basically being Hitchcock himself and how he projected his perfect woman or Novak's character struggle. There are some deep themes that mess with your mind here. James Stewart was just fine and dandy in this flick but Kim Novak really brings it in this film. She weaves in and out of her role spectacularly. I don't know if she won an Oscar with this but she surely should have, at least nominated. She really was a powerhouse and man was she sexy when she needed to be. Needed a cold shower after some of her scenes.
My biggest gripe with this film is the relationship between Stewart and Novak's character. I mean I guess I can conceive a world where someone can fall for someone that fast but it's sort of thin to me. But the biggest problem is I just don't buy her going for him. He is too old and she is too young. I get he is a movie star but Hitchcock needed someone younger IMHO to match with her. Just never bought the relationship, just went with it because it's what the movie said they were in love. I already have a prejudice with older films and the age gap didn't help. I appreciate why people love and it and how it's timeless I just don't find myself jumping at the bit to rewatch older flicks. I could definitely rewatch this one but not anytime soon. Just a generational thing.
I am happy I finally sat down and watched it. It most certainly is iconic and for good reason. It deserves it's status as one of the best moves ever. Super innovative Hitchcock ranking probably goes like this after. Think I will try The Birds next one day.

The Lodge (2019)
"Boring as hell" would have been a more fitting blurb for this Ari Aster rip-off. The twist is telegraphed so loudly that it's hard to imagine someone missing the clues, and what happens after the reveal makes no sense. The main thing I got from this is the realization that I may have been too harsh to Hereditary because of Aster at least has his own vision and proper technical competence to realize it.

1951 Noir. Not bad. The story about a "suspended" police officer going undercover at the docks to figure out what's going on with all the murdering and stuff. Crawford is fun to watch as the wisecracking undercover officer but the movie moves him up the criminal chain of command too fast. It's not boring it's just not all that memorable either.

Starts out slow but builds into a tense nail biting thriller as two powerful countries edge towards nuclear war after an error is made.

Pretty good, but it could've been better if it involved a psychic redhead with a magic gun.
Jackals (2017)

Kind of a home invasion film fleshed out with an extraction from a cult. The always dependable Stephen Dorff plays the "extractor" and main character. The film revolves around the familys resistance of the intruders (cultists!) but also on the iner-persional relationships in the family itself. Nothing too original but a serviceable enough little thriller.
Just a thought, wtf has Deborah Unger done to her face?!

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) - 6.8/10. Thought of watching Minority Report today. But that is not a movie to watch while working. 12 attempts and still haven't finished it. But this was a nice shift. The movie is great fun. The two lead characters play the hilly billy role very nicely. Definitely worth a watch. Like some of the reviews say best horror best horror comedy, I wouldn't go that far!
