A ******, low budget "Scanners" wannabe! More like a fan tribute to the 80s/90s flicks with similar subject matter but the problem was the story, script, characterization as well as some of the cast were really quite lame & awful to follow.

I commend them on the special effects, though. Can't deny they handled that aspect pretty well.

Grandma - 4/10
Usually when Rotten Tomatoes gives a movie a very high score (92%) and when the audience score is low, it seems to be very good.. I was wrong; and I should my fellow man more than a few critics; I guess that's a prejudice of my own.
(I wasn't going to write a review, but I have nothing to lose.. I already wrote it for another site, so I might sound a little different.. Copy and paste)
The thing about PC, "politically correctness" is that there's nothing correct about it, and nothing political.
Came right out of the Democrats' handbook. This is manufactured junk, effete, sanitized, no point of view, stockbroker mentality for values.
Seems like 98% of the movies made in the last 5-10 years are all the same.. They have some punk chick who says she's a hipster (whatever that means, nothing hip about them, so I don't know) with silly hair to show(fake) rebellion. She's so angry at the world because her i-phone isn't fast enough.
And she needs to get an abortion.. "We're not in the dark ages anymore" exclaims the doctor.. (Remember, we're living in utopia now).
Lily Tomlin hasn't played a lead role in 27 years, so I'm sure it's why she was "exploited". The director and "writer" made American Pie and other worthless pieces of $hit.
Early on, Lily steals weed from her girlfriend, sorry, we can't say that since we no longer define gender. "Significant other".
Director made sure to throw a piece of trivia like Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique" (I thought the cause was humanity, but I guess it didn't sell).
Of course, the cool, hip grandma comes to the rescue because women's rights are being threatened constantly. The girl doesn't have the money because the economy sucks (but that's never mentioned in the movie. After all, we have a President who is a Democrat, so I'm sure everything is alright).
And the cursing is just so adorable. More of that rebellious stuff. We could have used her profanityin the last world war - it would have them sweating bullets and surrendering immediately.
Of course "Grandma" is an academic to let us know she's "smart" since the movie won't indicate it. All these characters pretend they have an attitude, but they're just bitchy.
"Um, like really?" is a very popular writing technique. Write it down! And keep using it whenever there's space.
Every minority group is represented (and over-represented). About 5% of the characters are straight (where's the ACLU, we're being under-represented).
"Selling out" in this movie means you speak at a college and take money. They are such moralists, they feel guilty of all the material possessions, but they keep getting more, after all, what was life supposed to be about?
Always have the oldest woman to quirky things around businessmen with gray suits (black wasn't somber enough) with 4 buttons (3 buttons wasn't sincere enough).. Twirl your shoelaces to show you don't care what anyone thinks, and that you're going to be a strong, proud woman... Oh, and if there's time, go visit your black transvestite friend and ask for money, but remember to remind the audience of the cultural harmony.
New mainstream movies aren't complete without the stupid retorts and quips. Keep them in a safe!
The mom is the hard-noses, businesswoman who can do a job as well as ANY man (which is a high standard as you know) but has a soft side, after all, she bought her daughter 100 condoms, so how could she be pregnant?
"We used them all, mom" - more of that "humor"
Life is like totally unfair (until she gets enough money for an abortion, then she'll see the light)..
Because there aren't enough abortion clinics within a few square inches, she has to drive, and the car breaks down so they hitch a ride from a nice family with a TV in the background so the children can be convenient little ones.
After the procedure, the daughter has become a lady after she calls her mother an a$$hole... Remember to throw words like "karma" and "carbon footprint".
Luckily, the movie is only 79 minutes long, spending as little as possible to make a good profit. Put as little effort as possible (a 15-yr old could have written this, and probably did as an experiment if they were curious) and try to get the most out as possible. Throw a "macho" guy like Sam Sheppard for more of that star-power.
And to finish the movie off, you have to have an acoustic girl playing an arpeggio or in this case, ersatz folk plucking of strings while singing with no tone, harmony, melody, soul, nothing.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Maybe no one will want to agree with this, even if they do because they are afraid of being socially ostracized, just like in the McCarthy Days, only now it's voluntary and self-imposed. I don't see anything "liberating" about this movie or conformity; it's really slavery.

I've read some reviews I might not agree with, but that's their opinion, and I've never told you what to think, or how your perception is wrong. That's childish. Everyone has their own opinions...
You didn't even watch the movie!!
And if someone did and didn't like what I have to say, reply back with where I'm wrong... It's so weak to criticize with nothing... Again, you didn't even watch the movie!
There's an IGNORE button, too. I wouldn't even exist on here.

Actually follow the argument you are trying to have please! I'm specifically arguing against the way you talk down to everyone with that comment, it has absolutely nothing to do with your opinion of the movie that i haven't seen as you've pointed out multiple times even though it has no relevance.
There's an IGNORE button, too. I wouldn't even exist on here.
I have no intention of ever using that, you could always use it on me since i'm annoying as you said but no i'd only maybe use that on an obvious annoying troll if they weren't being banned, and i don't think you are a troll.
Also can i see examples of me being insecure with reviews of yours like you claimed?

Great direction and photography but didnt like the religious bullsh*t and specially the ending.
It's a very challenging film, and I guess either you appreciate that type of stuff or you don't.
I struggled with it at first but as the film progressed I got more and more drawn into its world, and the ending came like a perfect climactic point. One of the most magical moments in cinema that I know of.

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) (Dir. Kim Jee-woon) rating_3
https://i.imgur.com/VpUQh7N.jpg
Drawing loosely upon a Korean folktale, A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) is a definitive k-horror picture, a strong example of gorgeous filmmaking, an emotionally destructive familial drama, and a taxing psychological puzzle. In many ways, Kim Jee-woon crafts the spiritual successor to Bergman's Cries & Whispers (1972) perhaps most subtlety by paying as much attention to the chamber as the drama within it. My cultural blindness leads me to associate the rural manor with the paper thin walls of Japan, though its consciously lit wallpapers block the warm glow of the countryside to the point where night scenes feel set in an underground bunker. Not to say Jee-woon shies away from disturbing the viewer in broad daylight, an achievement many filmmakers fail to even attempt.
Jee-woon also makes sure to use horror not as a cheap excuse for shock, but as a tool for expressing trauma. For all of the supernatural imagery, one of the most disturbing scenes in the film unflinchingly depicts child abuse. Another twists the knife using an awkward conversation over dinner. Stripped completely of horror hyperbole, this picture would still stand on its own as a drama played straight.
Perhaps the weakest aspect of the film lies in its third act when the emotional core of the film is muddied by plot complexities. Instead of resolve, I experienced frustration as a story I'd been following with such ease was pulled out from under me. Eventually a bow is tied, but such an influx of details left me scrambling for a wiki summary instead of stewing in the aftermath of a tragedy. Still, I'd rather a plot twist distract from the film's substance than compensate for a lack of any.
Though unmistakably overwrought, I imagine subsequent viewings do away with my chief criticisms. Thankfully this is a film you'll probably want to watch more than once.

I thought i had posted this, but i found the tab still open
Possible spoilers
Im assuming im the only one here who havent seen it till now,so i`ll skip the description of it  I like how they show the friendship within the group in such a realistic way and not just the over the top sugarcoated lovedovey way hollywood usually does it to make sure we know a group of people are friends. I like the way the way DeNiros love for Meryl streep is shown, just by him looking at her.My only problem with this movie is that it seems a bit torn.It spends alot of time focusing on their time at home and then suddenly they`re in the middle of the war and havent seen eachother for who knows how long-and forced into this russian roulette scene.this happened way to fast for me and it was hard to try to understand their anguish and mental state because it came out of nowhere.
From what i read christopher walken recieved an oscar for his role, but i was more impressed by the actor who played Steven-who was absolutely amazing. This is a movie i would usually love, and i do like it alot, but there was just much happening it didnt have time to dive all the way in on either topics.

Crimewave (1985) (Dir. Sam Raimi) 2
http://i.imgur.com/y4bjtQT.jpg
Sam Raimi breathes life into an early Coen Brothers script to produce a mindbending acme noir. Chewing the scenery is an understatement when Bruce Campbell's brand of camp doesn't stick out in any major way. Several Chuck Jones style gags are played straight from frying pan smacks to getting air mailed to Uruguay. Zany sound effects and surreal lighting are used pointedly to accent the feverish universe. This is truly a product of the 80s, for better or for worse.

It's 1942 in Boston when a messed up little boy brutally murders his mean mommy. Fast forward to 40 years later, and someone is slaughtering the hot coeds on campus, usually when they're in some state of undress (my favorite state). This is an excellent bad movie that's a must see for slasher fans. Hot chicks, brutal murders, unintentionally funny dialogue, cheesy music, and two shock scenes once you think the movie is over.

I was never an avid reader of books, and so I had no idea what this story was about. I was captured by this movie in the opening minute, and I could tell it was going to be something special. From the direction, to the story, to the performances, this is a great movie, but it also has some sort of intangible quality that makes it a magical viewing experience.

Out of Japan, this is one of the most notorious extreme movies. A psycho abducts a young woman, takes her to his wherever, and mutilates her. I think this movie's only goal is to be vile and disgust the viewer. Thanks to some strong gore effects, I believe that goal was accomplished, and that is what my rating reflects. Most people will consider the movie to be garbage. It's about 40 minutes long and on YouTube. No subtitles but so what.

Nerdstromo! Slim choices at the theaters these days for me... I know, I know, Star Trek, aghhh! I actually think they've done a good job casting these......... Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Karl Urban as Doctor 'Bones' McCoy, and Simon Pegg as Scotty. Say whatever you want, MAKE FUN ME, but I think Season 1 of the old Original Star Trek TV series was good, in spite of the dorky stigma it has. It's a fine show. And the characters relationships work in these new Star Treks... that's why I think The Force Awakens was bland. The relationships didn't work, I didn't care about anything. But these new Star Treks, they're decent. And I liked this newer one more than whatever the last one was called. This and Deadpool are the only movies I've gone to see at the theaters this year, and I enjoyed both, I kind of doubt I'll go see any others. Also this new Jaylah alien girl, played by Sofia Boutella, is kinda cool. I don't know what I think about her name though, it's like they tried to make her J-Law, and I don't like J-Law anymore really. I like Jaylah more than J-Law, basically. This movie was kind of crazy, with all kinds of space stuff and crazy graphics, and aliens, but the character relationships save it. Kirk and Spock, Spock and Bones, Kirk and Bones, Kirk and Scotty, Jaylah and Montgomery Scotty. Captain's log stardate Nerdstromo out

Audition (1999) (Dir. Takashi Miike) 4
http://i.imgur.com/JD7h2aF.jpg
The only promotional image I'd ever seen for Audition was a woman in a butcher's apron with a hypodermic needle. With that in mind, I spent the first hour wondering if I'd acquired a romantic drama by mistake. You don't expect a film so highly touted by fans of bizarre cinema to take on the form of a typical Sundance entry. A single father seeking a wife is persuaded by his business partner to hold an audition under the guise of casting a movie. Hi-jinks ensues, right? Thankfully, this isn't a 2000s romcom starring Matthew McConaughey. It is something much, much darker.
Takashi Miike exerts masterful control of tone concealing his more sinister intentions by lulling the audience into a false sense of security. We see the heartbreaking loss of a mother/wife, the tender relationship of the father & son, the comedic premise of auditioning wives... It's an almost saccharine veneer that Miike proceeds to chip away at most impressively in the visual side of the medium. When the transition begins, the more natural lighting and framing gives way to dreamy neons and dutch angles. Flashbacks of previous scenes reach a different timbre. More first person POV is utilized. This stylistic shift happens so gradually, at first I mistook it for sheer incompetence. At the fulcrum of the picture, the world begins to crumble in on itself with surreal sequences that combine elements we were introduced to earlier in the film. The magnitude of the revelations for the main character is unmistakable.
After the turn, the icy heart of the film reveals itself through brutality. The gore is medieval, but the execution of it is modern and clinical. It's not meaningless bloodshed. It's as pointed as Pascal Laugier's Martyrs (2008) and similarly that point is up for some debate. While the femme fatale is a deranged product of child abuse, the flaws of our main character have also been revealed conveniently right before his torture begins. He has coldly rejected a lover. He has secretly lusted after his son's girlfriend. He tricked women into auditioning for him. It's even suggested that he only wanted sex out of the antagonist, a comment that has some grounds in what he expects of a wife. His demons have manifested themselves into his own personal angel of death. One that can open his eyes up to his own sins. While the punishment doesn't exactly fit the crime, he is shown mercy and sparred, left permanently handicapped in the same way as her abuser. She suggests that pain is the only truth and by the end of the film he has definitely suffered his way to a salvation. A baptism by fire of sorts.

I didn't think this felt quite as nostalgic as Dazed and Confused, although that's still the big draw for me, and there's no Matthew McConaughey in the cast. However, I thought this movie was funnier, and more fun overall. They both have brilliant soundtracks, with the edge there going to Dazed and Confused, while this movie has much hotter girls. This movie was a blast, and better than I expected, but then a movie like this set in 1980 would have to be pretty bad for me not to like it at all.

Michael Bay may only have been a producer on this, but his thumbprint is seen clearly. This is a good thing in the case of TMNT:OOTS :). Vibrant, raucous, and outlandish are a great way to translate comic/cartoon material to the big screen. It never lacks for being being top-shelf visual popcorn and in that it is noteworthy.
The acting, the story, the villains, the casting....well, those can all be called in to question. Did you know that Tyler Perry is playing Baxter Stockman? Yea. The guy that turns into a fly. To critique acting in a movie like this is kinda pointless, but he makes you wish Madea was playing the mad scientist. Shredder is absent in any super ninja death-dealer form and Krang has almost 5 minutes of screen time for what is supposed to be the big bad.
If you are a fan of TMNT, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, or Megan Fox cosplaying April O'neil, then watch this when it shows up on tv. A nice piece of fluff that is best viewed in bits when you can walk away and make a sandwich, instead of being chained to your seat for the entire runtime.

I watched the remake of this after it just came out, don't remember much other than it being really terrible. This was better, fun film. Vincent Price is brilliant of course, he really does make average films that much better. I liked how it jumped into things right away with the big fight in the fire, think this is the sort of film that greatly benifits from this. The makeup on Price was great, he looked pretty horrifying in his burnt face state. The scene when he appears to Sue and she screams and runs away had one of the most baffling pieces of acting i've ever seen. After hearing the scream a guy goes "the scream it came from up there", and this woman just goes "let's look into it" so calmly it was hilarious. It was just a complete throwaway scene i just had to mention it, weirdly it was probably the thing that has stuck with me most after watching it last night. The actress playing Sue wasn't very good IMO, especially during the scene where she was crying about finding her friend murdered. Anyway good film, wouldn't have voted for it but i enjoyed it so glad it was nominated.

Suicide Squad
I went into this thinking I was hate it but I was surprised that I didn't think it was that bad. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of things wrong with the especially Jarred Leto's Joker. It is the worst on screen Joker so far and his laugh sounded like an old crow. The story was very bland and did not make much sense other than the recruitment side of things. They also tried to hard to humanise the characters to make you like them, I think that would have been alright eventually but they flooded it too early. Some people praised Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and I thought when they cast her it was a good choice but it was so hit and miss. The other characters was forgettable and that is only because there backstory was breezed over and besides Deadshot I did not care if any of them died. Will Smith was the stand out for the group and I had my doubt but thought he played him well. Viola Davis was also good in her role and thought she should have been the main antagonist. Now let me get onto the "bad guys" they were evil... that is about it, they were forgettable and dumb. There is so much they could have done with Enchantress but floundered it. Now this might sound like a lot of bad but overall the movie had good action and chemistry with the characters. It is like having all the ingredients but following the wrong recipe. I hope if they do a second they follow the comics more closely.

There is certainly nothing bad about this movie. My problem with musicals is often the long runtime, and I guess it's often like that because they need to fit in the musical numbers with the narrative. It's just that with a movie that's already going to be difficult to grab my interest, a longer runtime makes it that much more difficult to maintain my interest. I very much enjoyed this movie between the musical numbers, which weren't bad but just not for me. Take 30 minutes of musical numbers out of this movie, and I may have liked it a whole lot. Two musicals I liked were Calamity Jane, and to a lesser extent, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and this movie has the same western type of setting. How the movie looks is it's biggest strength, with a lot of beautiful shots and colors. Shirley Jones was so cute when she was younger until The Partridge Family ruined her. I also enjoyed the other characters and there's some well placed humor. My rating is slightly too high for how much I enjoyed it overall, but it's much too low for it's quality.

I enjoyed this movie right from the beginning but really loved the ending. Cloverfield may be my favorite of all the found footage movies, and the way they did this as sort of a little substory was brilliant. Most of the movie is merely solid, but unlike Oklahoma!, it was very much my type of movie. A girl waking up shackled in a basement, or some variation of that, has been done countless times before, and those movies usually go in a similar direction. That is normally enough for me, but the late tie-in to the other film made this one stand out a bit for me. My wife liked it a lot too.

Marty (1955)
http://www.wgal.com/image/view/-/19227370/highRes/2/-/124iu5b/-/OTD-March-13---Betsy-Blair-jpg.jpg
A sweet and tender little love story about the real life fairy tale of the beast and the beast - not that these are ugly people - but they are not the glamerous Hollywood couple or the wealthy happy bunch. These are two people who are completely ordinary, with ordinary looks and ordinary lives, who just can't seem to fit in with everybody else - until they find each other. I liked that unpolished aspect of it, although I did wish for a little more unbalance as well. In a way, the story is very straight forward and it kind of calls for a turning point somewhere, but the closest we get to that is when the movie ends. In a way, the usual downpoint for our characters doesn't come 2/3 into the film, like usually, but is already build into the fundament from the beginning and we work its way up from there. The good thing about that is how things feel a bit off-beat and bold, but at the same time it's a little simple and shallow. The movie is missing a little more depth and some more layers, as well as some changes in the flow of the story... at least if this should be a masterpiece.
But as it stands now, it is a fun film, free from its own ego and told losely and warmly. Sometimes I don't mind when a film just wants to be an episodic and extended point in our life, because sometimes that point has a point of its own that is worthy of being told on the big screen. There is enough for us to understand what came before and what will most likely come after, so it's not that the story isn't complete. It's quite simply short in scale and grand in genuineness. Sometimes it's enough to feel the film without having to read the film and 'Marty' is completely lovable as it is. The visuals are subtle but not at all simple and the music is light on its feet without being without weight or matter. In a way, the soundtrack goes perfectly hand in hand with how the two main characters goes hand in hand with their parents and lives. They are nervous and good hearted people who are still attached to the safer surroundings of their closest family and familiar territories. They are not exactly immature - in fact far from it - and they are not infant minds or inferior human beings. But they have a youthful fragileness to them; a sweet and humble spirit about them, which the soundtrack catches nicely. It is almost like if the lullaby was suddenly a love tune... dreamy and innocent in its own way... kind of like our two main characters.*
And what wonderful acting from those two - especially Betsy Blair spoke to me. She was like her own little light and her smile made that light shine even brighter. She looked like someone that couldn't even hurt a fly and together with Ernest Borgnine's big and warm character their magic just flew off the screen. Short, sweet, simple and wonderful. I enjoyed this one plenty.

This sounded the most interesting of the last four films to show up on the countdown, it also seemed like something i was in the mood for and it turned out to be very good. I'm not really good at explaining why i liked how a film looked but i did think this was beautifully shot. Georgeous cinematography and i especially loved the creative use of camera angles. One thing that didn't work for me much was the score, i don't know why but it just didn't feel like it fit certain scenes well. I liked that this was an examination of the impact someone going off to war has on the people around him. I really feel that this could have been made about any country, it is interesting that even though there's many major differences between countries we really all did share similar experiences. Very powerful films with good performances particularly Tatiana Samoilova. I think that a lot of the members here would really like this. It wouldn't have made my list but it wouldn't have been far off.

Drive (2011) (Dir. Nicolas Winding Refn) rating_4http://i.imgur.com/JcEtWFi.jpg?1
I've confirmed my **** elitism by having to get over the fandom surrounding this movie before I could appreciate it. I've seen half a dozen of Wefn's pictures and have probably watched this three times now. Even though I recorded the TV edit and had to fast forward through commercials, I took away more from it than I ever remember before.
Beyond its dude bro qualities, Drive is really about standing still. The space between the exchanges is where you find the meaning. Nobody over-emotes, they instead let the moment breath enough for you to make sense of the dynamic without having it explained to you. You could watch this with the sound off and get the gist of it.
Instead of pouring my thoughts out, here's a page out of American Cinematographer where Refn tries to explain his thought process behind the movie and ends up outing himself as a mad man.

Duelle (1976) (Dir. Jacques Rivette) 2
http://i.imgur.com/WZ97ygA.jpg
Rivette's Duelle (the femimine form of "duel") marries fantastic elements with a very naturalist preference which is refreshing in an age when this type of story requires a special effects budget of millions. Unfortunately, for a picture about gods and tantamount apocalypse, there is very little to chew on here. After recently praising Refn's Drive (2011) for the import its silences carry, this picture has reassured me to never overlook silence again. While a pause can be a powerful tool in the right hands, it can also be a red flag for empty gesture.
Initially, I appreciated just how subdued a conflict of this magnitude could be portrayed. My experience with French film had led me to believe every story had to have serious themes and philosophic principles. From the Greek mythology I've read, it's all very simply put with much broader implications. That's the angle I believed this film to be taking and were it half an hour shorter, it might have gotten by in that way. Unfortunately, for all of Rivette's stunning visuals, excellent casting, and interesting choices in execution, this script is an absolute dud.
For starters, the one character in this film with any definition is tossed aside like an extra. The characters that survive her have motivations that aren't given any weight. Gods that wants to be human? An assassin under their spell turned against his own sister? Murder? Seduction? Immortality? There are a million ways to make these complex and thematic issues. There are countless monologues to be written. Instead, the most interesting conversation is about why a dancer uses a pseudonym and how much she hates her job.
The most climactic sequences of the film are frustratingly barren of dialogue when you expect some resolution in thought as much as in action. The scattered attempts at saying anything of note should confirm that this was a choice made out of necessity. Pretentious gets thrown around a lot, but the dream is the night's aquarium fits the bill if any phrase ever has.
For anyone who sees a lack of narrative as a lack of substance, let this be a counter example. I kind of wish I would have watched it with the subtitles off. For all of the tracking shots and long takes, all of the cinematic locations, all of the fashion direction, the beauty here is only skin deep. Is this how people who don't enjoy Malick feel?

Brooklyn (2015)
An incredible performance by Saoirse Ronan makes this film. There is nice support from all involved but Ronan is totally deserving of being nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this movie. She may not have won, but she's only 22-years-old and has already been nominated twice for an Academy Award. Her day will come, I'm sure.
Ronan plays Eilis, a young lady from a small Irish town who is sponsored by a priest friend who lives in Brooklyn, New York to come there. She finds work and a boarding house to stay in, but is wracked with homesickness at first. She slowly finds her way with a job, night college, and love with a young Italian man all of which makes her feel like Brooklyn is home. There are scores of Irish immigrants in Brooklyn that also make her feel a touch of the old country. But a tragedy in Ireland forces her to sail back home and once there, she is tempted by many factors to stay. Will she or won't she? Check it and see. I love Ronan and try to see all her movies but am way behind. I'm truly glad I saw this one, her most adult acting job to date.

Coraline (2009)
Totally winning animated movie about a neglected young girl who wanders around the apartment-house she and her parents have moved into, and finds interesting characters in and out of the house. But most importantly, she finds a small doorway in the house that has something like a wormhole or tunnel that leads her to a better version of her life that she instantly takes to. But all is not as it seems and there are dark forces waiting to snare her. Dakota Fanning gives a great voice-over as Coraline and Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman are fine voicing her parents on both sides of the house's universe. The Absolutely Fabulous duo of Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French are funny as the oddball landladies she encounters. The animation is fine and the mood is dark but cool. This plays very much like a Tim Burton animated movie...in fact it was directed by Henry Selick who directed Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) He's got another winner here. Loved it!

Mother's Day
(Garry Marshall)

1
I've been on vacation the last week, in Prince Edward Island. A small island off the east coast of Canada. So small that they have one theatre that was about an hour and a half away from where I was staying. When the idea came up to see a movie, I was thinking maybe Suicide Squad. Instead, we found out the hotel attached to our cabins has a small theatre, sits about 40 and plays one movie every Friday. Let's check it out my mother-in-law said. We all agreed and went to pay $8 to see a movie, which is almost $4 cheaper than a regular movie back home. We get there and see that the film is Mother's Day. The mother-in-law looked happy to see this, I can only imagine what my face looked like opposite hers.
Despite my zero interest in this film, I did give it a chance, as I do 98% of the films I watch. Much like the other flicks in this "series", Mother's Day boasts a big cast, small stories and lazy direction. The segments of the film include a widowed father trying to cope with the loss of his two daughter's mother, a woman estranged from her mother and father because they don't approve of the man she loves, a woman who's afraid of marriage because her mother gave her up for adoption and Jennifer Aniston having to cope with her ex-husband who marries a twenty-something bombshell whom her two kids love to hang out with. Oh, I almost forgot, Julia Roberts stars in it as well with a bad wig. Most of these stories intersect with one another.
Had the film focused on the Jennifer Aniston story line with Jason Sudeikis' widowed subplot, it could have been an interesting film. Instead it cuts itself short by not spending enough time to flesh out any character from any story or their problems. Kate Hudson has racist parents who throw out terms like towel-head like it's nothing. These people seem like the kind of people that would vote Trump, PRO-AMERICA, "Get out of my country" type. But their final acceptance of their son in law and their own daughter is so incredibly weak and vomit inducing that I question why this part was even included. They have find out they have a grandchild and immediately forget their racist history?
The film tries for laughs, misses a lot of them. It appeals to the lowest common denominator. Hoping not to insult anyone and be all-around friendly....it insults everyone.

Crimson Peak
(Guillermo del Toro)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/ad/Crimson_Peak_theatrical_poster.jpg/220px-Crimson_Peak_theatrical_poster.jpg
2.5
Crimson Peak offers the viewer gorgeous visuals, a creepy atmosphere and good performances from most of the cast, yet it fails to deliver any scares, thrills or genuine excitement. Guillermo del Toro might have to try being a cinematographer for a few films instead because Crimson Peak falters the same way his other films do. I should like Crimson Peak a lot more than I do, this is my relationship with all his films.
The film suffers from numerous things, but one that pops out to be is the bait and switch it gives the viewer. When one thinks of Crimson Peak, a gothic ghost story comes to mind. This simply is not the case here. Yes, ghosts are present in the film, yes they do "some" haunting, but that aspect of the film is not del Toro's focus. Instead he would rather have the story be about Chastain and Hiddleston, who plays brother and sister and live in Crimson Peak and their ulterior motives to why he should marry Wasikowska. Interesting at first, but the completely fails to live up to the expectations. Especially when characters do things out of character for thinly realized reasons. The bait and switch, tells viewers what to expect and deliver something else. We've seen this before...I'm looking at you Adjustment Bureau.
Wasikowska's the lead and I'm not sure if I just don't like her as an actress or if all her performances are the same. Ever since I saw her wooden performance in Alice, she has yet to impress or even really change up a character. Chastain and Hiddleston offer something interesting at least, then again they more experienced than Wasikowska. They both fir perfectly in this world.
But damn, does this film look great. The cinematography, the art direction, costume design, set design. These are always the highlights in del Toro films and Crimson Peak might be his best yet. The house bleeds red clay for crying out loud, a small detail that you see in the corners of the frame. Something only del Toro would do, which beautifully adds to the world he creates here. Crimson Peak, great title and great location. Too bad it takes half the film's running time to get there.
Del Toro's homage to the gothic hammer classics is something to admire I guess. I just wish he injected the story with more scares, more excitement and something a little more interesting. Some surprise shock and violence isn't enough here. Crimson Peak has a lot to offer and falls short on many of them.

Just as I remembered it from decades ago on TV, except nicely remastered and without commercials. I needed two nights to finish it. With all the scenes of Jefferies dozing off, I began dozing off. Not a reflection on the film, I was just tired. It's been so long since I watched it that one time on TV, that it didn't really feel like I was watching it again. I kept trying to remember how he ends up with 2 casts. Very enjoyable experience.

Arthouse porn. Kind of. Certainly explicit enough, but if you just want to jerk off, just watch porn. Although the libido's in this flick are just as preposterous as a porno flicks. The story itself however is fine, and based on actual events. Even the very last thing the main female protagonist does with her now dead lover.

Vulgar, vile, poor taste, and offensive. I LOVED IT! It is certainly worth the price of admission and a laugh riot. The movie also has some very obvious commentary to the Middle East situation and religion. But it also has talking sausages, buns, bath salts, and is very self aware. If you love offensive humor you will enjoy it.

Hitler's Children (1943)
http://www.warnerbros.com/sites/default/files/styles/juicebox_medium/public/hitlers_children_photo1.jpg?itok=uDPeUGpO
"This lurid exposé of the Hitler Youth follows the woes of an American girl declared legally German by the Nazi government."
I kept wanting to call this "Young Nazis in Love" as a young Nazi officer is in love with the German-born American girl who is forcibly entered into a Nazi youth program. Some of the acting is very stiff in the beginning of this film.
TCM called this an "exploitation" film. And it is anti-Nazi propaganda, but what is wrong with anything anti-Nazi? Nothing.
Kind of interesting that such a detailed look into the Hitler Youth programs would be made into a film right in the middle of the war (but then the author of the book on which the film was based fled Nazi Germany and brought with him info on the Reich's education system - so "straight from the horse's mouth" as it were).
I was drawn in by the second half and despite the film's overall flatness, there are a couple small outstanding performances.
Most interesting tidbit: Hans Conried (known for his comical roles in movies & TV) plays a dead serious Nazi doctor who orders sterilizations! And he is the voice of Hitler heard in English in the movie!
For those interested in WWII history and Nazi stuff, I give this a 4 of 5.
As general film entertainment for anyone not interested in Nazi stuff, I give it a 3 of 5.

Excellent. But give it a chance because it seems kind of sappy (corny? cheesy? bad acting?) at first, but gets better as it progresses. It gradually leaves the sappiness behind and doesn't end up pulling any punches. I watched it in two parts - I enjoyed the second half!

Holidays
(Multiple Directors)

In the style of ABC's of Death, Holidays takes a stab at the horror anthology genre, this time the gimmick is...you guessed it, Holidays.
The big ones are used, Christmas, Easter, Halloween...but then we get a St. Patrick's Day, which is odd because I'm not so sure that is considered a "Holiday". What makes things weirder is the fact that Thanksgiving is missing. I really liked St. Patrick's Day, until the absurd ending, but it's an interesting note on the film.
As a lot of anthologies do, this one suffers from the unevenness of the shorts. Some are wildly original and creepy, Easter, others a pathetically inept, Halloween. That later short, Halloween is directed by Kevin Smith, yes, Kevin Smith. He's on his horror fad right now and he misfires completely here. He casts his daughter and other girls as cam girls who have had enough with the poor treatment they are receiving from their 'boss'. So they force him to mutilate himself before taking over the business themselves. The horror element dives into the "torture porn" sub-genre, but it is pathetically weak, not funny and somewhat insultingly lazy. Compared to the Easter short by Nicholas McCarthy who directed the horror film The Pact, where he blends the Easter Bunny with Jesus to make a creepy horror hybrid of terror.
Seth Green and his wife star in the Christmas short about the truths behind people's worst desires and evil doings. Mother's Day focuses on a pregnant woman with a coven of witches and Father's Day is one of the more obtuse and out there films. Well directed and paced, but doesn't deliver on the ending. Then you have Valentine's Day which has predictable results and New Year's Eve, which was somewhat fun. It's all a mixed bag.
If you're into the anthology horror series, give it a shot. It's on the lesser side of things like ABC's of Death or V/H/S.

Straw Dogs (1971) (Dir. Sam Peckinpah) rating_3
http://i.imgur.com/PLHhy2E.jpg
Sam Peckinpah's A Series of Unfortunate Events uses the guise of a nuanced marital drama as a front for an exercise in transgressive cinema. Per the Wikipedia page, its release alongside of Clockwork Orange and several other landmark releases spurred controversy over the increasing violence in cinema. Fresh off of a bad experience with the studio system, I imagine Peckinpah created this to reclaim his creative freedom with a big "**** you" to mainstream sensibilities.
Straw Dogs follows a traditional hero, his sympathetic relationship, and the tragedy befalling them. Its most interesting indulgence in deviance lies in its portrayal of rape, presented as a murky ethical dilemma for both the victim and the culprit. Much like the film itself, this sequence regrettably wanders from an interesting conflict into the territory of absurd provocation. This is compounded by a wholly unrelated series of contrived events that conveniently sets the third act into motion. As far as home invasion pictures go, I'd consider this well crafted horror more than a thoughtful drama, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, sorry wasn't a fan of this. I get why it is liked but it just isn't for me. It is really campy and cheesy, this can be and is a good thing in many cases but not for me at least here. I liked Steve McQueen, he seems to be a really well know actor even now and i haven't seen him in much, obviously i doubt this is one of his great performances but he was enjoyable. Wasn't a fan of any of the other performances really though, also there's something about the main antagonist being a pink blob that makes me think i'd never enjoy a The Blob film too much haha.

I've read that some people have a slight problem with the juxtaposition between humor and the serious topics in this film. (esp. the exploits of "Animal" and the guy who played "Eric Von Zipper" in all those Frankie & Annette beach movies).
As always, I have to mention that this film was quite apparently the inspiration for the TV series "Hogan's Heroes".

"You know what they say about the crazy ones..."
Movie was okay, pretty by the books. Cast was pretty good overall. My biggest confliction with this movie and the one thing everybody was thinking about going into this movie is ofcourse the Joker. I didn't hate Jared's portrayal, but I still found it very odd and way too over the top. Heath Ledger's joker was a little over the top but he still had a touch of realism to him, he was wacky and crazy but also reserved in many instances as well. Its difficult for me to put it into words. Jared's Joker seemed like he was straight out of one of the Batman cartoons, seeing this Joker in real life he just felt out of place next to the other characters. I guess they really had no other choice as they had to try and to live up to Ledger's fantastic performance from the Dark Knight. Leto's performance wasn't horrible by any means, but it could of been much better and was not as good as Ledger's performance. And this is coming from someone who didn't even like Nolan's Batman Trilogy. Also still not a fan of the new Joker's look. And also dear god I've never been so attracted to a crazy person than I was with Harley Quinn in this movie, Margot Robbie have my children please and thank you ;)

"A Great American Movie", with an Aussie and a Canuck at the helm.:D It really wasn't bad. Mendelsohn was the main reason I decided to watch it. I've really enjoyed his work, from the moment I first saw him 5 years ago in Animal Kingdom (2010).

Pride and Prejudice (2005).....10/10 this movie melted my heart people!!!! The film location is beautiful, there is something light and soft about almost every scene, the directing is wonderful and the acting my god THE ACTING. Kiera Knightley+period movies? Atonement!!? just amazing. After seeing Matthew Macfayden basically embody Mr. Darcy, and make me cry from happiness in the end, I am searching out more of his movies.
P&P may be the epitome of romance.

The Producers - 4+
http://i66.tinypic.com/qq5tex.jpg
Loved this. It was really over the top and silly at times but i laughed a lot and most of all it was just a bunch of fun. I actually liked this more than Young Frankenstein and quite a bit more than Blazing Saddles. Did not expect that at all because this looked very showbiz-y. Something i'm not usually that into. I liked the idea of them setting out to make a play that will flop, great premise for hilarious situations and of course their play was an inspired choice :D. I expected the play to end up a success from the moment i heard the scheme i liked the way they made this happen though. The play was so bad that it came off like a comedy mocking the nazi's, their plan worked too well haha. Gene Wilder is always great even in bad movies so he was no suprise here. I wasn't familiar with Zero Mostel though, i thought he was excellent. Loved most of the other characters they met during it as well. The guy they got to play Hitler was just the best, his audition was so hilarious. Springtime For Hitler (the song) and the crowds reaction to it was brilliant. The ending was a bit wtf? I loved the old ladies crying in the court and the lawyers "We find the defendants incredibly guilty"
Great film that was a big surprise for me.

Star Wars (1977)

This was one of my biggest childhood favorites. I saw it several times at the movies, a few times after that, but then not at all since around the mid-80's when I stopped liking fantasy movies. I didn't know what to expect going into this viewing, and I was surprised at how much I had forgotten.
The beginning of the movie gave me chills, but in a good way. A lot of nice memories came back to me. The middle third, after the excitement of seeing it again had worn off, was my least favorite part. I started to realize that this wasn't to my taste anymore, but then I got back into it. A lot of the effects were dated, but some of them weren't, and I do remember a time when this was the coolest thing I ever saw. The set designs, art direction, and spaceships are still awesome, and that last fight sequence is thrilling. Beyond that, it's the story and characters that sets this movie apart from others that have copied it. Darth Vader still looks and sounds menacing as all hell too. I don't love it anymore, but it's the best of it's kind and it was fun to see it again.

Wow, I really loved this, unbelievably someone on IMDb called it a ripoff of "The Thing" which leads me to believe they didn't watch the whole film or are mentally deficient since apart from the setting there is almost no similarity.. it's rather like saying "The Witch" is a ripoff of "Alien" ... there is no music but the way it is edited there is no need for build up or tension since the wtf moments happen suddenly and increasingly and the viewer is forced to confront what's happening, which is never really clear, want to say more but spoilers, went places I did not expect

The Shining - 2
Kubrick's dive into the horror genre lacks any emotional resonance. Much like a lot of his work, this film is cold, which made me disassociate with the characters. I had no connection to Jack or his family BEFORE he went insane, so imagine my care level for them AFTERWARDS. It doesn't help that Shelley Duvall is beyond irritating. Is it her fault? I don't know, maybe Kubrick pushed her too far to get a good performance, even a frightened one.
Captain America: Civil War - 2
Loud noises, fan service and sequel bait. Civil War takes an interesting idea (what if our Superheroes turn on each other) and leaves the good stuff on the cutting room floor (I hope, cause it HAS to be somewhere). Marvel films all appeal to the lowest common denominator. It hits the general movie audience with spectacle, which we've seen numerous times before but leaves out good story-telling. I did not believe for a second these people would fight each other for the reasons stated in the film. Add on top of that the contrived circumstance in which the characters find themselves in the climax of the film and you have yourself rotten eggs.
Chinatown - 5

Touching the Void : rating_4
Rarely have I had the pleasure to watch such a gritty survival movie. Thirty minutes in, and you wonder what could possibly go worse, and then it does, and it does again until you almost can't bear to even watch it anymore.
The filmmaking is quite sober, with just a few tricks that I feel were unnecessary, but otherwise the mix of interviews and images of actual mountaineering was brilliant in its simplicity.
The Lego Movie : 3
The LEGO company has done really well with its adaptation on film and video game. There was the famous Simsons episode, which was great, and the games and then this little gem which was a really good surprise.
While still being an obvious marketing campain and moneygrabber, the film doesn't take itself seriously and is genuinely funny, although it a little bit too long for its own good. I also found the first act to be much stronger than the other two.
Dead Man's Shoes : 4
A good old uncompromising revenge flick. Unlike some other films about unabridged violence, this particular one is not voyeuristic or exploitative. This results in a strangely low-key, yet intense, movie experience, that I would recommend to all of you who love the genre.
I would give it five popcorn baskets, if not for the slo-mo flash-back scenes who were a bit too repetitive and cringey.

A new favorite from a genre I'm not especially fond of, although I was let down a little by the last third. I thought the Matt Damon character knocked the movie off track a bit, and I also thought it got a little confusing and unbelievable near the end. Until then, I was pretty much spellbound. I was engaged in the story even though it wasn't anything special, and the effects were awesome. Usually action set in space bores me, yet somehow I found those scenes in this movie to be exhilarating. The robot was very cool. My wife seemed to be enjoying it but she fell asleep about an hour in.

I was looking on TCM, and though this didn't even have a rating, I liked the one-line description of a tortured family. Very interesting and risque for 1962. I've seen a handful of Frankenheimer, and most have been pretty good. Produced by John Houseman, written by William Inge - I'm surprised I never heard of this movie.
I wish the lead would have gone to someone better than Brandon de Wilde (the boy in Shane).. I also noticed some a few actors who appear in other movies much later, especially Barbara Baxley in "Nashville"

Given my normal taste, I've been surprisingly receptive to the films of director Yasujiru Ozu. My only real complaint has been that his films are very similar to each other. This movie was much heavier and darker than the other movies I've seen from him, a big plus for me. It stars Ozu regulars Setsuko Hara, Chishu Ryu, and Isuzu Yamada, three actors that I've really grown to appreciate. Of course, there is also plenty of gross warm Sake. I wouldn't say this is the director's best movie, with my favorites being Late Spring and An August Afternoon, but because it's a bit different, it's one that will stand out to me.

This movie has a great concept behind it. It's adapted from a couple of books and is a Sci-Fi noir thriller that totally bunked at the box office. I like it, simply for it's great plot. But I had to watch it twice because it's so complex (for me), and some of the acting is a bit wooden. The production is also low on quality but I'd recommend it for anyone into time travel / sci fi movies

Sausage Party
(Greg Tiernan, Conrad Vernon)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e4/Sausage_Party.png/220px-Sausage_Party.png
2.5
The best thing Sausage Party has going for it, is that it's clever. A lot of puns, a lot of subtle jokes and the concept is unique enough to be funny. Yet, I can't shake the feeling that the overused language and sex innuendos will wear off on people about 30 minutes into the film, leaving you with a poorly rendered animated flick that tried to entertain the idea of religion. Yes, this film is really about the existence of God or lack thereof.
The food are alive. They talk, they have sex, they want to be chosen by the Gods that frequent their home. Their home is the supermarket and these Gods are us, buying groceries. Of course the food doesn't know that. They think they are going to the great beyond, hoping for a beautiful after-life. When a returned item tries to tell them the truth, it shakes Frank's whole ideals. He takes it upon himself to find out the truth and warn the entire supermarket if he ever finds out the truth.
Much like The Invention of Lying, I had no idea Sausage Party full on tackles this religion conundrum. Faith vs Atheism, Frank desperately needs proof about the great beyond being real or not, while Brenda the Bun is perfectly fine having faith in it. This puts these two "destined to be lovers" at odds with each other. Gervais clearly had an agenda with Lying, I'm not so sure if Rogen and Goldberg do. Either way, it plays an integral part to the story here.
By the end of the film, my wife turned to me with a deadpan look on her face and said, "I hated it". Okay, to be expected, not her type of humour. The film constantly swears and some might find it racist. But what about fans of the creators? Well, at points the language felt FORCED, even to me. We get the point ten minutes in when F-bombs are dropped left right and centre. That aspect of the film gets old very quick, what doesn't get old is the clever and unique way they show us this world. One example where I was laughing pretty hard is with sauerkraut Hitler wanting to exterminate the juice.
The film is supported by a huge cast, mostly involving the Rogen regulars (Franco, Hill, Rudd, Wig, Cera, etc) But it also showcases some unique stars that I did not expect, one playing the Woody Allen like bagel. I won't give away who it is because there is a ruined joke in the film if I do. The film is funny, but it thinks it is funnier than it is. I felt like I wanted to like it more than I did. A film can only be clever for so long. I chuckled a lot, laughed out loud a few times and felt really really weird by the time the food orgy happened. Yes, you read that right...FOOD....ORGY.

Wow. Gritty and intense. My favorite John Voight role as the crazy convict, and 2nd from Eric Roberts, fresh from The Pope of Greenwich Village (“THEY TOOK MY THUMB CHAH-LEE!!!”), as the doting, weasely tagalong convict. Fantastic cinematography with some very scary icy train shots done from multiple angles. The stuntmen and cameramen earned their money on this one.
John P Ryan is most excellent as the d!ckhead prison warden. Probably one of my all-time top 5 d!ckhead prison wardens.
Great actors all around (including Kenneth McMillan, another alumni of POGW), amazing visuals, and good story.

http://iv1.lisimg.com/image/9306524/640full-the-beguiled-screenshot.jpg
I came upon this film last night while it was already underway and then couldn't turn it off.
I thought I was aware of all the twisted movies of the past, but I'd never even heard of this.
And I'm not really a Clint Eastwood fan, but this was neither a spaghetti western nor a Dirty Harry movie.
It brought up a plethora of taboos (esp for 1971: including incest, dismemberment, animal cruelty, murder plotted by children, with hints at lesbianism & pedophelia) and even had Eastwood share a kiss on the lips with a 12-year-old girl (11 in real life)!
I give it a 4 of 5 for being kind of original, weird & twisted.
P.S. Seeing Eastwood young, I can't get over how much Hugh Jackman resembles him in the face.

Scarlet Street (1945)

My wife and I both loved this. She wasn't even going to watch it, but she thought it looked good in the first few minutes when she was doing whatever. The majority of the movie had us laughing quite a bit with it's dark humor. The ending then takes a dark and haunting turn. Edward G. Robinson plays a naive sad sack going through a mid-life crisis, Dan Duryea is a hilarious sleazeball, and Joan Bennett is the dame you know is no good from the get go. It's directed by Fritz Lang, is on the top 100 noirs list, and is a nomination in the current Noir Hall of Fame. I thought it was very entertaining and memorable, and I added it to my early list of contenders for the eventual 40's countdown.

BAD MOMS
(2016)
So many comedies coming out today are more misses than they are hits. Surprisingly, this movie has turned out to be the funniest movie of 2016 so far. Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell are hilarious.

I watched this a few years ago for Halloween and enjoyed it a lot.
Holy moses did that shot gun blast stun me. Supposedly, it freaked Siskel out so badly that he ran out the theater during his screening.

Still a fun blockbuster that shows the talent that Spielberg would become. People take his films for granted now.

Oof, Rushmore is definitely overrated, but zero out of five seems excessively harsh.
Also...

Lol who is this newbie?
You come on here with barely no posts yet and not any favorites in your profile and you just hate on every single good movie. I have to laugh.
One day you'll (hopefully) understand how wrong you were back then. :)

Is that Conor McPherson's The Eclipse? I really like that movie. 7/10 isn't too bad, but I'd be interested in reading your thoughts on it.

I wanna see this SO bad and you are NOT helping. :(
But really though, I hate how this movie is not set up with the original language in our theaters here. Either I miss out on it on the big screen or either I'll have to wait until BD release and watch it at home on a smaller screen but with original audio.

Everyone seems to love that Kubo and the Two Strings movie. My room mates are seeing it right now. I wasn't invited.
