Nothing is better than blood spray
Yes! Ultraviolence, I love the Lone Wolf and Cub movies, or Baby Cart movies, which ever you want to call them. Back when they were on VHS, I had all six of the original ones, now I only have the first two on DVD but love them dearly. I do somewhat miss the Americanized VHS from 1980, where the voices were dubbed in corny English, and when the Lone Wolf finds his murdered mate, he's holding her body and says, "They will pray, with rivers of blood!" The DVD doesn't have this dialogue. It's still greatness.

8MM (Schumacher, 1999) 4
http://i.imgur.com/BiZsGKT.jpg
At first I kind of wrote this movie off as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher, 2011) by way of Law & Order: SVU (Wolf, 1999–), but at some later point I realized it was more like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by way of Se7en (Fincher, 1995). I like my comfy cop procedural television, but the latter comparison is definitely an improvement. It proved to be an accurate observation once I discovered the man behind the screenplay is none other than Andrew Kevin Walker who also wrote Se7en.
Surprisingly, though Phoenix and Gandolfini costar, they rarely get room to shine in the manner that Cage does. Even more unexpectedly, a Nicolas Cage at this stage of his career manages to play it straight in all the right places. Of course, during the emotional highs in the third act, he does unleash some of that golden Cage rage we all know and love. That's a welcome reprieve for this increasingly drear picture.
Thematically 8MM does borrow heavily from Se7en in regards to a man pure of heart being dragged down to the level of the people which he despises. Thankfully, it draws this development out over a longer period, focuses more on the process of the transformation, and doesn't reuse Andrew Kevin Walker's career defining catch-22 over again. The more original idea that 8MM brings to the table is about the way that human nature encouraging us to look for patterns and explanations can be futile. That's why a killer without a motive is so captivating. It also draws a parallel using the rich benefactor whose motivation amounts to nothing short of his own capability. There isn't an evil of greater purity than that which exists only to exist. That's a realization that can break a man.

It Follows (2014, David Robert Mitchell)

Now this is the kind of horror movie I like - subliminal, creepy, mysterious. Sure, it wasn't without its flaws, and the potential of its premise may not have been exploited to the fullest, but it still was hellishly effective in creating a deeply unsettling, suspenseful atmosphere of pent-up panic and paranoia. The cinematography was excellent (check out those zooms and pans), as was the spine-chillingly eerie electronic score by Disasterpeace. On the flip side, I thought that, while it started out great, the novelty of the premise wore off somewhat as the story progressed, causing the film to fizzle out a bit toward the ending - but that's a minor quibble. Overall it was a winner, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Firstly, I didn't think it was as good as the first. It sometimes focuses too long on a characters story and the other thing that bothered me was the ending which just had too much going on for me. All that aside, its still really entertaining and has most of the good things that were in the first. There are really funny moments, some of the action scenes are great and its an even better soundtrack than the first film.

Wtf.
https://i.blogs.es/da42a5/cartel-kickboxer-vengeance/original.jpg
The nostalgic in me wanted to watch this even though I thought it would be really poor.
Kickboxer and Bloodsport were two of my favourite films growing up and although when I watch them now, I notice the wooden acting and holes in the plot but it still doesn't matter. I'ts like I watch them through the eyes of my 12 year old self.
This was a bad film and I didn't have the nostalgia to fall back on as it was a reboot/sequel/fresh interpretation kind of thing.
The story was as with the others, all about revenge and the good guy sticking it to the big nasty man, but there was not enough that was different to the original for it to be unique, and the parts where they tried to modernise it were weak.
I didn't hate it, but it doesn't come close to the originals. There again, few 'reboots' ever do.

Last Night at the Theater: - The Circle & The Boss Baby
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/80/The_Circle_%282017_film%29.pnghttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0e/The_Boss_Baby_poster.jpg/220px-The_Boss_Baby_poster.jpg
The Circle and The Boss Baby are two films I had no real prior intention of seeing at the theaters. The Circle has received a godawful response from critics and has generated no interest at the box-office, whereas, The Boss Baby has received a mixed-at-best response and delivered at the box-office quite well (I anticipate The Bossiest Baby will be scheduled shortly). I decided to watch them, mostly, because I wouldn't be seeing my girlfriend as much this week because of our work schedules, college, etc., and so, we figured we'd go out to eat and take a trip to the movie-theater.
The first and foremost was The Boss Baby, a film that, when I first saw trailers for, I thought looked like a stupid and pitiful offering from Dreamworks, which has recently reduced itself to Trolls, Home, and Penguins of Madagascar, with the enjoyable Kung Fu Panda and terrific How to Train Your Dragon series receiving installments on occasion. However, the reviews and audience-reception had me expecting an entertaining enough romp, and, for what it's worth, that's about what was received from the film. The film was, at best, a cute film for kids, with the occasional bit of humor that I found myself smirking at. This isn't a Pixar film or How to Train your Dragon, which carries themes that feel just as much presented for a mature audience as a small child, this film is downright targeting the (very) young demographic, and it writes its material with that demographic in mind. Thereby, while it isn't a great film, I can't really bring myself to bash it too harshly. The biggest criticism I'd say I have is that it was too sentimental, and the sentiments it did have, felt like they were a little under-cooked or paint-by-the-numbers with their execution. The small child a few rows in-front of us loved it to pieces though, and with the occasional sprouts of visual inspiration and the ability to embrace its own ridiculousness, The Boss Baby is a good enough addition in Dreamwork's catalog.
The Circle was next. I definitely expected very little from this film. In-terms of critical response, The Boss Baby might as well have been Get Out (99% on Rotten Tomatoes) in-comparison to The Circle (around 10% on Rotten Tomatoes). Turns out, The Circle wasn't too bad either. The film basically carries the narrative of a woman, played by Emma Watson, that joins a company, aptly named The Circle, that eventually finds itself, perhaps, overstepping too far in its connection with its users. The concept is timely and certainly intriguing, carrying that "Big Brother is Watching" paranoia with it, but it's definitely rushed.
In a very minor spoiler, I remember one instance in-particular where one character tries to suggest Emma Watson's character is becoming too obsessed with The Circle, when, in-fact, she hasn't been with the company for very long and has shown no real signs of obsession with it. It almost felt like this accusation was meant at a later part of the film, but they didn't have enough time to space everything out.
I enjoyed some of the cinematic visuals and I enjoyed the concept, even if it was over-the-top and exaggerated. I think one critic in-particular regarded it as a romp comparable to one of the Da Vinci films, and that seems about right, in my opinion. I also enjoyed the end, which, I believe, went a different way than what I was expecting, which would have been the predictable route. All in all, while The Circle is too flawed to be considered a good film, it isn't a godawful film either, it suffers from pacing issues and its story could have used a couple of edits before starting production.
I can't particularly recommend either The Boss Baby or The Circle to the average person, that isn't to say I don't think you could enjoy them or that I don't think you should check them out when they come out on home-video, but, more to say that there are better films out at the theater I think will be more worth your time.

I'll still go see The Circle, though I was vaguely concerned when I heard Emma Watson had been called to reshoots earlier this year, over a year after production had completed. I know reshoots aren't uncommon. but that seemed a tad odd.

There's only a handful of musicals I love, and most of them grate on my nerves so I had limited expectations for this movie. The opening number on the freeway is not something I enjoyed, yet I would almost say it wowed me with it's impressiveness. My rating is slightly high for my overall enjoyment of the movie, but I have to give it credit for how well done it was. I didn't think there were too many musical numbers, and they at least didn't take me out of the movie. I find Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone to be enormously likable actors, and their romance was believable, and that was the key to the movie for me. I was on edge for much of the movie because what I wanted to be happening wasn't, but that at least means I was invested. It was beautiful to look at, and there were a few great moments that had an effect on me. I wouldn't quite call it a personal favorite, but I think it perfectly accomplished what it was trying to do. Just as an aside, I thought it was an interesting movie from a racial perspective.

American Psycho
American Psycho is honestly one of my all-time favorite movies. The craft employed by both the director and the actor to bring to life this unique and twisted story is remarkable. The social commentary of how homogenized that material life can be and how it would drive someone to murder in order to break from the norm is brilliant. Ok, I said no more deep diving but I find it brilliant that the song Bateman chooses to praise Huey Lewis and the News for is “Hip to be Square”. A song in which the entire message revolves around conformity to society’s norms and breaking away from your independent style of thinking.

Bats (Morneau, 1999) 2
http://i.imgur.com/wWTr1uh.jpg
This movie can best be described as something you would find on TNT at noon. It definitely had potential for a campy little horror/disaster flick, but they only use the charming practical bats for tight shots, and SyFy channel tier special effects for everything else. Amazingly, the ugly animations aren't half as revolting as the warped, dutch style insert shots they use during any kinetic editing. What an absolutely bizarre stylistic choice.
It's not exactly uncommon for a B movie to overcome its lack of craft, but there's really nothing to fill the void. The characters are flat, the performances aren't bad or weird enough to pop, and the token black character belting one word punchlines falls short of ridiculous and hovers around sad. So yeah, turn off TNT, and go watch Birds (Hitchcock, 1963) or Birdemic: Shock and Terror (Nguyen, 2010) depending on what experience you're looking for. Either that or make sure to pregame for this like it's college football.

Night of the Living Dead (1968, George A. Romero)
4.5
Modern audiences will most likely find this low-budget Romero classic dated and not scary at all but, of course, there's more to it than meets the eye. The remarkable open-to-interpretation ending is, no doubt, what elevates it above your typical zombie flick and makes it so endlessly relevant. Among other things, Romero explores psychological dynamic and hierarchy of decision making (and importance thereof) within a group in an emergency situation, playing a trick on the audience by partly reversing the moral positions of the main characters, Ben and Harry (with Ben's bravado and stubborn authoritativeness proving ruinous in the end).
Great film!

13th movie of Fassbinder I have seen, and it's probably my favorite... It's definitely the best story, you guys should check it out - I won't say anymore... Except that it's hilarious, black.
It must be rare, since it's the first Fassbinder that has lower than 700 ratings.. It's why I once put it in, and then just put another of his movies, but I usually know that ratings tend to be low when there aren't thousands of ratings on IMDB.
Oh, and though it's in German, the setting is in the US.

From the noirs list, I thought the story was fine but besides the point. The heart of the film is the up and down relationship of characters played by Scott Glenn and Rita Hayworth. More than that, it's a fantastic showcase for the smokin' hot Hayworth. The only thing is that I think Glenn is best at playing the slithery type, which he does well in this film, and it's a little hard to believe he could score a girl like that.

The Hunter (Nettheim, 2011) 3
http://i.imgur.com/uuvIok8.jpg
The good old Shane (Stevens, 1953) formula: a mysterious stranger arrives in a new place, is taken in by a family, and fends off local aggressors. Sure, it could've aimed a bit higher and gone the Moby Dick or The Old Man and the Sea route, but Carnahan's The Grey had came out 10 months earlier and scratched that itch. Instead, we get a little of everything, and some of it works really well.
The survival element showcases the exotic wilderness alongside some genuine bushcraft, the family element produces the scene in the bath tub as well as the scene with the Bruce Springsteen song, and the thriller element does lend some thematic depth. Even at the edge of the world, you see man carving away its forests for a career and industrialist mercenaries trying to exploit the last of a species. This movie is admittedly scatterbrained, but it does prove itself at least momentarily effective in every direction which it takes. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Orca: The Killer Whale (Anderson, 1977) 5
http://i.imgur.com/0SQFMI2.jpg
I know what you're thinking. Spielberg did it first, and this is just another example of a B movie ripoff job. It's not that. This is more than a shark movie. It's a tale of revenge which juggles the silly, thoughtful, and heartbreaking like a circus performer. It's a stunning collaborative patchwork at odds with itself in a manner which compliments itself.
One moment you have Michael Anderson giving the Italian schlock artists of the day a run for their money with an orca committing arson. The next you have Ted Moore of Bond franchise fame using the camera like damn paintbrush from the Romantic Period to legitimize the emotional core of the movie. The next you have Ennio Merricone conjuring a cacophonous hellstorm which summons the beast to the stage. It's a film about warring perspectives made from warring perspectives. Nothing emphasizes this more than the double cold openings which accomplish starkly different tasks.
Not dissimilar from the aforementioned triumvirate are the three core characters of the film: Rachel Bedford who embodies "man with nature", Umilik who embodies "man in fear of nature", and Captain Nolan who embodies "man against his own nature". Rachel insists that orcas can think, can feel, can communicate, and that they have a right to be left alone. Umilik pushes those who agitated the sea to face it so that it doesn't punish his community further. Captain Nolan consults a priest as to whether you can sin against an animal and is met with the reply "Why, you can commit a sin against a blade of grass. Sins are really against oneself". It's all perfectly symmetrical to the collaborative chaos which birthed it.

Started watching it once (a long time ago), and, sadly, couldn't get very far into it. It just felt so 70s cheesy to me.
Probably need to give it a proper rewatch some day.
Orca: The Killer Whale (Anderson, 1977) 5
Script legends Luciano Vincenzoni and Sergio Donati transcribed one of their classic spaghetti westerns with one of the main characters turned into a killer whale. Morricone's music is quite affecting. I saw this at the theatre as a sneak preview and I still think it's pretty good - certainly better than The Keep.

Excellent performances from Michael Keaton, Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch power this understated yet ultimately powerful tale based on the true story of Ray Kroc's involvement in the beginning of the McDonalds restaurant franchising empire. See it.

I just remember the beach, and him being like a stranger walking around in a white suit.... But, I had/have a big selection to choose from, and I deleted it (oops) because of space. I'll go see if I can order it..... I wanted to see this because of Finney (after seeing some early kitchen sink movies) and John Huston is one of the best, too.

Rourke and Dunaway are both great in this and even though its about quite a serious subject in alcoholism, its still light-hearted enough to be funny. Apparently partly based on life of Bukowski himself.

I tried this because it's on the top 100 laughs list, even though I'm not a big fan of the old classic comedies. It's fast paced and very pleasant to watch. Claudette Colbert plays one of the leads and is delightful. She makes the film. Joel McCrea as the other lead is a little bland, something I often think of his performances. The supporting cast is pretty good.

2016 was the year of holding back emotions, it seems.
This was very good. A heartfelt and detailed look at grief that's also surprisingly charming. Affleck is so muted and controlled here. It's microscopic work that in retrospect becomes a career defining performance. He's cemented himself as one of the greats, as long as you can separate the artist from his art.
Douglas Hedges is also very good here. He's where the majority of the film's charm comes from.
I'm also betting $100 that Marvel scoops him up for Harry Osborn in the next Spider-Man.
The movie is really all them with occasional breaks from reliable character actors. I'm surprise how much attention Michelle Williams got. She's almost a cameo.
Again, this is probably the most muted film of the year. Don't go into this expecting much melodrama. Watch it attentively.

Enter the Warrior's Gate - written by the Taken duo of Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen and directed by Cockneys vs. Zombies' Matthias Hoene. A teen video gamer (Uriah Shelton), mistaken for his avatar enters a portal to ancient China and teams up with a loyal soldier (Mark Chao) and a funny wizard (Francis Ng) to save a princess (Ni Ni) from a barbarian leader (Dave Bautista). Fun mix of action and comedy that may be reminiscent of The Forbidden Kingdom, but has some nice twists and even the villain's henchman brings some comic relief.

Black Site Delta - Cam Gigandet (Never Back Down,Twilight) and Teri Reeves (Chicago Fire, Once Upon a Time) play two members of a band of military prisoners who must become unlikely heroes when they learn that 1) a terrorist/mercenary unit has come to the prison and 2) the prison is actually a cover for a drone facility. I love indie action and this was actually a pretty good action film making good use of its stars, especially Reeves as the mysterious Vasquez, in a role usually expected by perhaps a pro wrestler/big man type and Gigandet at the leader of this new "Dirty half-Dozen".

Nerve
(Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/3a/Nerve_2016_poster.png/220px-Nerve_2016_poster.png
3
I would never think something like this could happen, until last year when everyone went crazy over Pokemon Go. Nerve dials into the Millennial and Gen Z population who are obsessed with tech devices, gaining immediate gratification from viewer recognition and thrill seeking stupidity. Taking cues from Scoresese's After Hours, Nerve takes place over the course of 24 hours and ups the ante in terms of absurdity and danger for our characters.
Venus, or Vee, as she likes to be called, is embarrassed by her best friend when she tells a cute boy that Vee likes him. She's not my type he says. Determined to change people's minds about her introvert personality, she signs up to be a player in an online/real world game known as Nerve. It's a truth or dare styled game, minus the truth. You could be a watcher, paying $20 an hour to watch people play, or be a player and earn a lot of cash based on the dares from the watchers. Vee is dared to kiss a random stranger for 5 seconds, so she picks Ian, played by Dave Franco. After the kiss, he starts singing about how much in love he is with her, she soon realizes that he's also playing the game, as is half of New York. The dares get more dangerous, people's lives are at stake and if Vee tries to warn anyone about the game, it may cost her her own life. Do You Want To Play?
Retro neon covers the screen, giving this film a unique look that stands out compared to other teen flicks. Teens obsessed with their online profile are at the centre of this story and it criticizes how we as a society are hungry for more violence, sex and harm to others. Is this generation of kids rabid for the wrong thing? Who knows, Nerve barely scratches that surface, instead it wants to wow you with what edge of the seat death defying stunt the characters do next, whether it be driving on a motorcycle blindfolded or hanging from a construction crane with one hand. It's a little thrilling, but the film doesn't push the envelope enough. I would have expected more bodily harm for crazier amounts of cash, but for the most part it felt a little tame.
Young girls seem to be the target audience here and I feel like they would like the film. Franco does his charm thing, while having a wild side that I'm sure the girls fall for. Many can see themselves in Emma Roberts shoes. The fast pace and friendly stars help move this film along. Once you think about the fundamentals of everything, it starts to fall apart. Ignore logic, accept the realm of many possibilities and you'll have an okay time.

They follow lead after lead and suspect after suspect until we get to the end. The movie looks great and becomes very involving. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was well worth the wait and a great sequel to what honestly was one of the biggest surprises of 2015. While I still prefer the original over this sequel, I find that it complements and expands on the… galaxy set by the original. James Gunn continues to deliver his vision in a Marvel universe, something that Edgar Wright found to be almost impossible. I can only hope that Thor Ragnarokhor is also the singular vision of its director; Taika Waititi. I was emotionally invested in a tiny humanoid tree and that’s why I love movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) - rating_2_5
Despite being made by the same people, Vol. 2 seems like a sequel made by another director trying way too hard to prove that they knew why audiences loved the first Guardians film, and completely missing the point in the process.
While Volume 2 is underwhelming at best (and tedious at its worst), there is still quite a bit here to enjoy, especially for fans of the comics. I was a little worried about how a particular character would be represented in the film, but I was actually rather impressed with how they managed to blend both the image of the classic version with their cinematic counterpart. There are things I enjoyed in vol 2, but they were unfortunately dragged down by overused jokes, an unnecessarily long runtime, and a plot that doesn't seem to flow very well, which seems to go out of its way to separate the main characters for arbitrary reasons.
I saw the first Guardians of the Galaxy in theatres 5 times. I honestly don't know if I'll rewatch Vol 2 when it comes out on DVD.
I haven't seen the first one and i'm not sure if i ever will. That slightly surprised me though as i've actually read a few opinions that the second one is better, well not read actually just read the first few sentences that tries to establish the second one as superior.

For me, despite trying to go in with low expectations, Vol 2 was just okay. It didn't even remotely capture the magic that the first film had, at least for me. The music wasn't as good either. I did, however, get one of those awesome IMAX posters that is going on my wall despite my indifference towards the film.

I was underwhelmed by the sequel as well and for a lot of the same reasons...
I'll have to see it again to cement my opinion because on one side I enjoyed because I like the characters I liked some of the gags and jokes but overall it was a mess and tried too hard - though I gotta find out of big of a problem that might be for a revisit. It's just one of those movies where you perhaps want to like it more than you actually did. But we'll see...

I definitely had that with Doctor Strange. The more I thought about that film afterwards, the more I thought I'd like it upon a rewatch. After it came out on DVD I rewatched it with my room mates...and I liked it even less than I did before. The things I liked were still good, but the things I didn't care for, or found irritating the first time around seemed much worse. And that's what I'm afraid is going to happen with this movie.
I'll probably rewatch Guardians vol 2 eventually; it just won't be for a very long time.

99 Homes doesn't patronize its audience like The Big Short, it doesn't think it has to trick its audience like Money Monster, and it doesn't let people ignorantly applaud like The Wolf of Wall Street. It's a film that grapples with class and economic hardship on a personal level that people can identify with. My problems with it are mostly based on some inorganic monologues, Garfield's elusive accent, and some of the artificial melodrama which betrays the grounded spirit of the film. Still, the most important thing it does, it does right.
Before I wake.
I just cant get through this. I feel like I'm wading through wet cement. Maybe that's the director's intention in which case, it works.

I'd encountered these, let's said, numerous times before on tv but I barely have chances ,or sometimes, an intention to sit it well and quietly stare at it.
First thought I was obviously impressed when copolla did something like terry gilliam or early sam raimi will do - especially one particular scene that I keep in awe with it till now (y) -
But overall, as I see it, at it fullest, well idk how to put it into words, it was a bloody bloody pretty pretty bland storytelling. The like What the sole purpose of this renfield guy, in presence, when in the end there's no neccesity about him at all - what all this feeling when there were scenes and the angles changing was abruptly disjointed in editing, by dialog and narrative structure itself - for increasing the unease atsmospher? Style? Well whatever mr coppola
what the heck happen when one character suddenly kicked the door get into the room, interupt masturbating party, then come briefly and so fast explanation on one angle, and hey, he ain't even mad, he's okay about it - so sweet so smooth so convenient -
the expected guys, anthony hopkins often put off in angle along with other as well - barely hit the mark - and the always intriguing gary oldman seems just isolated away on his own manic - which both probably the only good thing to talk about regard performances and bit livelier~deadlier characterization
Etc
- just my personal stupid rant - and again I catched you monica belucci, I'm pretty sure it was you, or it isn't :/ -

This is from the same director as Shop Around the Corner, and I feel similar about both. I can't really find any flaws but I'm not fully connecting, although I had better luck with this one. I never saw Don Ameche before in anything in which he didn't look ancient, and I thought he did a nice job here. He plays a guy who's checking into hell after his passing, but he has to tell his life story first to see if he's admitted or sent upstairs. The beginning and end of this movie dealing with that dilemma only amounts to a few minutes, so the plot is basically is life story. He's a spoiled kid who turns into a ladies man but does find love and get married to a character played by Gene Tierney. I think the movie is best known as a comedy, but I enjoyed the romance part more. It has loads of charm and elegance, and it looks fantastic. I also thought they did a nice job with aging the characters believably. It's a very nice movie.

Goofy and a little bit touching, and even vulgar. I mean - goofy, touching and even a little bit vulgar. Early Sam Rockwell (who actually co stars in the film contrary to the awful dvd cover art indication that it stars Dermon Mulraney, which it does not -- at all.). Turturro is pretty hilarious and Catherine Keenar is really good along with Lisa Blount (rip). Definitely worth a watch. (dvd has dir commentary which is enlightening). DiCillo is also responsible for "Living in Oblivion" which is another great indie comedy about film making starring Steve Buscemi and NOT Peter Dinklage!

While Oklahoma City uses Timothy McVeigh's actions to examine a troubling national movement, the more wieldy Ruby Ridge focuses on detailing one of the most controversial, thorny government actions in recent memory. Both are fascinating despite their rather humdrum approach to documentary filmmaking. Although Oklahoma City is clearly the more ambitious, timely project indicting far right extremism, its black and white morality is less challenging to digest than the Gordian Knot that is Ruby Ridge.

From the noirs list, but with only a 6.6 rating on IMDb, I thought the first 25 minutes were terrific. A guy returns a wallet he finds in the street to a man who turns out to be a gangster. The gangster likes his honesty and gives him a job as his chauffeur. The gangster and his henchman (Peter Lorre) were a lot of fun to watch. The new employee gets involved with the gangster's wife, and all of a sudden the story went completely down the crapper. It's too bad.

This was okay. Fine lazy Saturday watch.
Right away you know what to expect from Hardy's performances. Their introduction through narration spells them out and, with them, the entire film.
Still, it's Tom Hardy, so I could watch him mumble and grunt all day.
There's a very blatant attempt at a Goodfellas moment that falls miserably flat. :(
A plus is that Emily Browning looks positively angelic throughout. So there's that.

My 3rd time seeing it since it came out. Very good film - in parts - but also very disjointed and strange. Which is fine. A lot of really nice touches like a guassian Bob Dylan lookalike shot through sheets of plastic, rockin' 50's/60's soundtrack, excellent attention to detail concerning sets, tough action sequences staged very realistically and lots of humor. But still left me scratching my head. It exists as snippets and not so much a cohesive or even satisfying narrative. Or does it? I guess it was cutting edge.

But still left me scratching my head. It exists as snippets and not so much a cohesive or even satisfying narrative. Or does it? I guess it was cutting edge.
I like it even more.
The Wanderers (Philip Kaufman, 1979) 4Wonderful period gang flick full of hilarity, action, sex, suspense, violent surrealism, race relations and many other things. It's also about the dawning of a new era which you will understand about when it gets near its ending. Besides being wonderfully crafted and having a great soundtrack, The Wanderers is just "out there" in its plot and presentation, whether it's dealing with the Bowling Alley Godfather, the seemingly spectral, horror movie-influenced Ducky Boys (who almost seem like they should have been in Kaufman's previous movie, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers) or the way racism and sexism seem rampant but can be overcome. I love this film.

Burr has gradually devolved into a bitter old man spinning his wheels as a shock jock years after the novelty of being edgy has eroded. People who liked his comedy for ******** on traditions should be disappointed in him for defending ones that he approves of. He can see the absurdity in Amy Schumer's first world problems, but not in complaining about McDonalds serving salads. Having grown up with his work for the past decade or so, I look back on his early work like I do Eminem's. I can't separate the nostalgia from the genuine appreciation, and the new material is both derivative and past its expiration date.
Transgressive comedy is supposed to violate boundaries. There aren't any boundaries anymore, no matter how much you're convinced that some bloggers in L.A. are the majority regarding politically correct culture. Nah, it's a little too unfocused for me. Most of the podcasts I listen to are about stuff. His are just kind of rants that go all over the place. I remember catching Why Do I Do This? in middle or high school and finding it hysterical.

Mark, I think I need to see this movie alone. I totally knew there was some pretty strange stuff happening here. My obstacle was the person I had seen this movie with at least twice prior over the years. Constant talking takes me out of the experience. This will be yet another rewatch when it becomes available to me. Last night I watched the Kino Lorber blu ray, which looks stunning! I imagine my review will be even more supportive of this film once I've had a chance to ingest it without distraction. I believe I missed some of the point of The Wanderers, which makes sense since I usually always champion films with oddball narratives. :)

I just finished watching Zootopia with the little one. It's all right. Some of it is really stupid, which I've come to expect from kiddie films, but some was okay. I guessed why the predators were savage, but I didn't get it 100% accurate (I didn't guess that "night howlers" also meant a plant). I knew I wouldn't like it much, but it isn't horrible, and it kept the kiddo's attention for a while (we watched it in three sessions).

Whiskey Galore! (1949)

It's life during wartime, but the only problem a little Scottish island has is that they run out of whiskey. When I say it's a problem I mean it's like a tragedy for these folks. A ship runs aground during some fog that just happens to be carrying 50,000 cases of whiskey. The question then becomes who gets it. I picked this randomly off the British films list, and then read the general synopsis before watching it. I thought it was going to be really silly, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's an amusing and enjoyable movie in a quaint setting. Well worth spending 80 minutes.

I watched a few movies this weekend so I will be brief. I liked this movie, nothing really new was brought here and I pretty much guessed it all however it was still entertaining enough to not be a bore. After reading up about it there were quite a few racial references in the movie to KKK and so on. I think it was well directed and for a new director it was pretty polished. I am not sure however why there was so much hype for this other than being entertaining.

Now I am not really sure how this is a cult classic for children. This is the first time I watched this movie and I got bored. I mean the puppets are quite well down as you would expect from Jim Henson. As for the actors/characters I could not relate to any of them and ended up disliking them. The only one I thought was enjoyable to watch was Sir Didymus the rest were just irritating. I just cannot see the appeal of the movie and I guess it is one of those fond memories you would have had as a child only to die when re watching.

Gangs of New York
I had not watched this movie since its initial release back in 2002 and at the time thought it was a mish mash of garbage. Upon watching it again I think it is a solid movie but certainly not Scorsese best but is still a decent film. I think the film could have done with a little bit more violence to make it more of a shock factor of the time. Cast is all pretty good except for Cameron Diaz which baffles me why she was picked for the role. Also you could tell Leo was still wet behind the ears in terms of accents. I especially liked the last scene in the movie where they show the grave stones and the background transforms in modern day New York. Day-Lewis as usual is his strong method acting self and I think really made the movie better than what it was.

First half - 2.5+
I wasn't crazy about the start of season 2. It seemed unfocused, meandering through stuff that didn't seem to matter much. I did like the spirits, which reminded me of Princess Mononoke. When it delved into the mythology, is when I liked it most, which is probably why...
Second half - 5
...the second half of season 2 manages to best the first season, in my opinion, due to the sheer magnitude of scope and mythos present here. Starting from the double-episode about Wan, I felt far more invested, and progressively moreso as they entered the spirit world, and the mythology just seemed to deepen and deepen. And not only that, but the mythology doesn't feel simply a thing of the past like it does in a lot of mythos-heavy stories. It continues the mythology. Big things happen at the end of season 2, things that change the entire backdrop of this story's universe. I love that. It's fearless, and keeps things fresh. I hope season 3 plays off that well, and continues to keep this story interesting.

I thought this was pretty good. Lovely character driven blockbuster. Right there from the beginning (best opening credits in the MCU) I knew this was my kind of thing.
Admittedly it drags in the second half and the climax is unfocused but all the necessary notes are hit. The final 15 minutes (not counting the after credits) are a great example of what keeps me coming back to this (for me) often frustrating franchise: real care for its characters. A constant state of change.
Fun stuff.
And if Dave Bautista can succeed in Blade Runner 2 the way he couldn't quite in Spectre, he'll be giving Dwayne Johnson a run for his money.

I wanted to watch a 40's movie from the noirs list, so I just went alphabetically and picked the first I hadn't seen. What a great blind watch this was. I'm far from an expert, but I wouldn't even describe it as a noir. There's no murder and subsequent investigation, no guns, or even any police. It's about an amateur boxer who fights his way to the top of a crooked business, the ups and downs, and his relationships. John Garfield, who I liked so much in the noir, He Ran All the Away, is perfect as the boxer. He looks and acts the part. There's very strong performances from the supporting cast as well. This movie often reminded me of other great movies that would come much later like Raging Bull, Rocky, and even Pulp Fiction. Maybe it's just me because I don't remember it being mentioned on the forum before. I loved it.

The Secret Life of Pets
(Chris Renaud)

What happens when you leave to go to work and your pet stays at home? Those who have or have owned pets might have thought about this and SLOP wants to dive into those questions. A heartfelt and funny kids flick that will have their parents nodding their heads with acknowledgement on "My dog does that too!!! That's funny".
Max lives at home with Katie, he was abandoned as a pup and she took him in. They have been inseparable ever since. One day she brings another dog home, Duke. He's large, dirty and instantly creates conflict with Max. Enraged by Max's holier than thou attitude and his multiple attempts to get him kicked out, Duke manages to abandon Max in an alley, surrounded by feral cats. The cats steal their collars and before the dogs know it, animal control is on their tails. Now Max and Duke must put their differences aside and make their way back home through the dangerous city of New York.
With an all-star cast (don't they all), SLOP goes for talent versus name recognition. One of the things I've noticed in animation lately is the the filmmakers will grab someone famous simply for their name and not their talent. Some voices from celebrities are so generic that you might not even notice if they decided to re-cast the role in a sequel. I'm looking at your Hoodwinked. So here we have people with talent; Kevin Hart as a maniacal bunny hellbent on human suffering, Dana Carvey as the wise old dog who needs wheel assistance to move and Steve Coogan as the hairless Sphynx cat just on this side of crazy. Louie C.K. does an excellent job for Max giving off that 'better than you' vibe with a hint of innocence. Eric Stonestreet is Duke, big and lovable.
A white Pomeranian named Gidget is in love with Max and you'd think they would cast a famous female for that part, but we get Jenny Slate. While some will recognize her, she's not really a house hold name, but she does very well for herself and you'll notice she does a lot of voice work. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Albert Brooks, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan Lake Bell and Ellie Kemper.
SLOP knows its limitations and doesn't really try to overstep them. Animals loose in New York, it's simple and can be expanded upon greatly. The film's climax does go a bit overboard with an animal control van plunging into the water, but it's not as bad as Finding Dory's octopus driver. There are a few laughs to be had here and a few more "awwws". Animal lovers and pet owners will get a little something extra out of it. Look for the sequel soon because this one was a hit with the audience.

The title cracks me up because there was a crazy gay club right near Fenway Park named Ramrod, and that's the only time I've ever heard that word before. This movie is on the top 100 Westerns list, but for the most part I thought it was very average. It's good points are a little more violence than the typical movie of this age, and Veronica Lake whose character is hot and nasty, just the way I like em.

(I kept mine instead of tossing them into the garbage can for recycling them).
Now, I'm a big fan of the first movie and with the second they advanced the story, the characters and hit every single aspect of what made the first work without making it look like rehashing.
This had EVERYTHING that makes going to the movies truly worthwhile and I f@ckin LOVED it!!

I just finished this movie and I wasn't expecting much, but I haven't been this surprised since I saw Kingsman. I felt like watching a movie from my horror watchlist and decided to give werewolfs a chance. I have to say that I was genuinly scared at parts, and even though by the end I was kind of laughing (in a good way), its been a while since a horror movie frightened me (last one was Martyrs); plus its probably the first werewolf-related movie that has ever scared me. Now I understand why so many people have it as their favourite horror film and it has definitely made a spot in my top 10 horror films.
PS: Also the first transformation scene will also make its way to my all time favourite scenes. The movie deserves a second viewing, probably some time this week.

Okay, I don't know exactly what you mean, Max, but I must find out. I laughed out loud at this description. I MUST see this! :D
Saw a movie and its sequel that I've been wanting to see. The first is Lady Snowblood (1973), starring the beautiful Meiko Kaji, as Yuki Kashima or the Lady Snowblood of the title. She is born in a prison to her mother who wanted her baby to grow up to be an instrument of revenge for her. The mom's husband was murdered by a band of bad guys (and one gal), and the mom was raped, and one child killed. So, while dying in childbirth, she wishes her vengeful spirit into her child to grow up and kill the bad guys. I don't think the spirit thing works so much as the mother's friend in prison raising her and having her trained by an unknown samurai (we get to see her training sequence in flashback) and as she grows, she becomes the weapon her mother wished for. She sets out on the trail of revenge and is soon hacking and slashing with style. She carries an umbrella with a katana hidden inside. All the fight scenes are choreographed expertly and Lady Snowblood is a force to be reckoned with. Loved this move!

Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance (1974)
Sequel to Lady Snowblood is not great, but very good, with Snowblood being hunted by the authorities for the murders she committed in the first film. She's sent to the gallows but rescued by a government official and hired to track down and murder a radical who has a incriminating paper on several officials. She's supposed to get the paper also. The first half drags a bit, but is still compelling as she poses as a maid for her intended victim. She begins to do what her teacher taught her never to do: have feelings for anyone. This is important as she gets caught up in the crooked government's plan for the people and her compassion for the village she's in. So she begins to defy them and the blood begins to flow. This is a well-made, worthy sequel. Still, lower your expectations just a little bit and you'll have a great time.

Battle Royale (2000)
Great, grim, but still involving action-packer with young teen students forced by the government to fight to the death till only one remains. That one will supposedly be returned to their family. This is all because students have gotten out of control, taking over classrooms, refusing to come to school and causing general chaos in the country. So the government thought up the battle. We're given a handful of kids to focus on and see how they fare in the struggle. The main two are Shuya and Noriko, who promise not to kill each other, but will defend each other. They are joined by Shôgo, whom they're not too sure about.
There are quite a few rotten apples in the bunch, the worst being "transfer student" Kazuo, who wears a suit, has unkempt hair, and carries a machine gun for mowing down bunches of students. Yukie is a kill-crazy gal who changes weapons on a whim and smiles while killing. Chiaki Kuriyama, who played Gogo in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 is here as a student who goes bonkers when she receives a scratch from a fellow student.
Many of the teens are given different weapons, and some none at all. The expectation is that they will either be murdered outright or pick up a weapon from a dead student and defend themselves. The students are fitted with explosive collars should they try to escape. This all takes place on an evacuated island in the middle of the ocean, where an ex-teacher monitors the deaths and announces them over loudspeaker every day. I understand this was a controversial film due to the nature of "children" killing each other. Well, that's exactly the point of the film---it's horrible that they're doing this. It's also a futuristic story about society out of control and this is the government's resolution. Again, a great movie. I understand there's a Part 2. Looking forward to it one day.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Sequel to the hit horror movie from 2013 is a fine, goose bump raising flick. Concerns the same paranormal expert couple from the first film, Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), who are first seen investigating the famous Amityville house, where Lorraine has a disturbing vision that will follow her throughout the film's narrative. She is so upset that she talks Ed into "retiring" for a while. But the haunting of a house in North London soon draws them back into the field, if you will. The haunting is centered around an 11-year-old girl, Janet, but soon, despite not believing, everyone in the Hodgson family's circle will witness the supernatural events. I am not a person to be "scared" of a movie, but this one really had me squirming in my seat and very tense. Wilson is fine once more as the more stoic of the Warrens, but Very Farmiga is excellent as the wife who fears for her husband's safety and the monstrous entity she's seen, both in vision and in reality. Madison Wolfe almost steals the movie as the poor child under constant attack from evil forces. I really had a good, spooky time with this film and I think it's a notch above the previous one.

Destiny's Son (1962)
Directed by Kenji Misumi
A tale about a man doomed by his own destiny, who managed to fail in every aspect of his life but it was a great swordsman. In just 1h 11min Misumi managed to told a tragic story about a man seeking his own death!

The Last Samurai (1974)
Directed by Kenji Misumi
This was the last film by master Misumi, I know a lot of people just know his 'Lone Wolf and Cub' film series but all of his filmography is a lost gem!
The Last Samurai, like many others show us the twilight of the shogun and the transition to a new world, a world without samurai! All the others films that shows us the end of the samurai, the story ends in the end of the shogunato Kamakura, but in this one, we see how they lived after that era, what happend with all that honor and devotion that was extinct from night to day? The film also has a twist in the end.
It was also the only feature film that he wrote. He died the following year at the age of 54. A 2h 39min Chanbara/jidaigeki, Action/Drama with a humor that comes out of nowhere.
As my journey through Misumi's filmography continues, I already know that he was one of the best directors of the 60's/70's.
The Last Samurai, what an epic finale for the career of a stylish master!

Passengers
Solid little sci-fi flick, the moral dilemma at it's core had me wondering what I would do in that situation (exactly the same probably). I think this film could have been even better if it had concentrated more on the human story, like in the end they recap many years in a minute or two, I would of liked to see another hour but nevertheless I enjoyed it all

My wife never saw this so I had to watch this again with her so we are ready for vol 2.
This is a well made Marvel movie, better than Avengers 2.

La La Land - it wasn't spectacular, but it was subtle enough for my taste. Two dance sequences between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling stood out for me and there is a twist that breaks the stereotype for this genre of film.

Hey, that's one of my favorite Bogart films. It was kind of hard for me to watch knowing it was his last film...and that he was very ill at the time of making it. Good to see some love for that movie.

I just seen this, glad you liked it, so did I. I have a couple questions:
I was on edge for much of the movie because what I wanted to be happening wasn't What did you want to happen?
I thought it was an interesting movie from a racial perspective. That's interesting, in what way?
Oh, and what did you think of how their relationship ended up?

I wanted them to fully commit to each other, like two people in love should. Everything else should be a lesser priority.
That's interesting, in what way?
It seemed that every single scene had multiple races, and it seemed so noticeably intentional to me. Not a complaint, just an observation.
Oh, and what did you think of how their relationship ended up?
I thought it sucked, but I thought it was great as a viewer.

A Matter of Life and Death (1946)

http://www.celtoslavica.de/chiaroscuro/films/matter/matter1.jpg
This is the second movie I've watched this week that deals in a fantastical way with what happens after death. With the other movie, Heaven Can Wait, I basically was able to forget that I was watching fantasy because it only focused on it for a couple minutes at the beginning and end. This movie deals with it the whole way through, and I have a very hard time getting lost in my imagination. Thankfully, this movie had me hooked after the first 15 minutes. I had to focus more than normal to keep track of the story, but it's a good story that's very well executed. I thought it was excellent as a love story, and it had some very interesting visuals.

The Dressmaker 4.5 It is truly amazing when a movie takes you in a completely different direction than your initial expectation and with a whole lot more intensity and avoidance of the usual tropes; and holy crap they truly did it with this movie.
I special shout out to Judy Davis who plays Kate Winslet's mom; Mad Molly. What a wonderfully cantankerous old bitty!!!

Quick reaction rather than review, though this is definitely one of my favorites of last year.
Wow, I haven't seen a movie so intimately provoking since Boyhood.
Reinforcing my love for Mike Mills (director of the wonderful Beginners), this movie truly feels like a piece of life and one of few films I've seen to follow through in its lessons so thoroughly.
Looking to revisit this soon and get some thoughts straight but this actually could be my favorite of 2016.

Miles Ahead
Really cool film, an interesting take on a biopic. I think it went a bit too far with the shootout stuff and went too far from the truth, but the style was spot on. Really enjoyable.

Special mention goes to this which I just happened to stumble upon. Its a documentary on Ravi Shankar, who is an immensely talented and passionate musician. Really recommend watching. His work on the sitar is actually mesmerizing.

Someone recommended this, or liked it.. I'd like to thank that person, but would be generally happy to find out who did see this movie.

SO DARN GOOD !
For someone who has lost the ability to laugh a long time ago, I was surprised that this didn't make me just say in my head "HAHAHA ! That's very funny", but instead, made me laugh out loud multiple times. Pretty much everything about this movie is fantastic, the directing, the cinematography, the acting, the soundtrack...you name it, it's great. I only have small issues with how the film was edited during certain scenes, it definitely could of been better in that area, and there's also a green screen effect near the end that annoyed me, maybe that was a joke, but I didn't find it funny....it just looked really ugly...and annoying...and cheap. Overall, fantastic !
Land and Shade (2015) - 3.5
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e0/Land_and_Shade_poster.jpg
Surprisingly, this was really great, the atmosphere was quite eerie and it matched with the slow yet engaging events, the cinematography was very impressive and so was the acting, and the directing too. The more I think about this movie, the more impressed I am with it, it managed to accomplish a lot with pretty much nothing. I actually fell asleep during the last 10 minutes but it wasn't the film's fault, I'm the idiot that decided to see this while extremely tired, so I'm planning on re-watching it soon, and I think the chance of my rating getting bumped up is pretty high.

The three Musketeers (1973)
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMTM0MTcxNTg5NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMzYyNTQ5._V1_.jpg
Sigh
I love the story of 'The three Musketeers'. I used to read the book a lot when I was a child. I loved the history, the suspense, the revenge, the swordplay the notion of 'One for all and all for one'.
As a child I saw films that had been made of the story of the Musketeers and I remember that I was always left feeling underwhelmed.
When this was nominated in this HoF, I thought "Maybe I was wrong, I am older now, maybe I will see things differently now".
I didn't.
Summary
In summary, I just can't get over myself and get beyond the same issues I have had with every screen adaptation of the story of 'The three Musketeers' that I have ever seen.
I love the story but get angry at the way it is portrayed on the screen. As I say, it is the same with every version that I have seen so maybe it is me that it is interpreting it all wrong. With that said, this is all about my opinion, and that is an opinion that I respect :D

So I'm watching this film, seeing as it turned up on the mofo sci-fi list. A bit confusing at first, but then Jane starts telling her story and I'm following it and then...suddenly it makes no sense. Then it makes less sense. It's a time travel film, so it's bound to go skipping about through timelines etc, but I'm starting to think it's getting ridiculous. And then the end credits, half an hour early. Turns out the dvd had skipped a couple of times. So it's probably not quite as time-skippy and confusing as I was thinking it was. Unfortunately the end and main twists of the film were all spoiled by this skipping forwards. It seemed like a good film though. It looked good anyway, couldn't always quite make out what they were saying. I can't really tell whether it would have made more sense (dramatically and emotionally) watching it all through.

Mindwalk - 5/10
I thought I'd like this movie very much - it has the right foundation for a conversation, but that's the problem -- the screenplay. Taken right out of a science book, with the constant, annoying "As my work in this field", the constant reassuring of "When I ran for President".
Sam Waterston should stick to making commercials, he can't act.. John Heard doesn't have a big part, he's usually flippant, trying to be funny or cynical, but if I had to pick the best lines, they are probably his at the end.

I had seen this and rewatched it and, knowing the twists I was able to enjoy the zigs and zags without scowling and wondering what now?

I can imagine your confusion with a skipping DVD for a confusing time travel flick. I really enjoyed it and I'm not sure if it would make more sense or not if you watched it in full. :p

A pleasant surprise. Like The Wolf of Wall Street, this film tries to show the morally bankruptcy of someone in a high position of power; however, this film doesn't try to glorify the main character's actions. Abel Ferrara has never been one who strays from controversial material, so he's perfectly suited to handle this sort of film.

Goodbye, South Goodbye 4
Similar to City of Sadness, Hsou-Hsien weaves a delicate tapestry filled with numerous characters, who are all compelling in their own distinct way. This is a film set around the gangster lifestyle, yet nothing here feels glamorized. If anything, it really does capture the day-to-day of what living in such an environment must feel like. Upon further viewings, I can definitely see this becoming a personal favorite.

Pauline at the Beach (1983, Éric Rohmer)
4.5
Another exquisite, enchanting gem of a film from Rohmer. There's something about his cinematic approach, his characters and the fable-like vibe of his movies that is utterly disarming but invariably thought-provoking at the same time. Beautifully shot by the great Nestor Almendros, this deceptively superficial "moral tale" blows through the viewer's senses like a gentle summer breeze - colorful and serenely playful.

Mulholland Drive
Is a critic on the culture of Hollywood. How we take young beautiful actresses, raise them up as high as we can, only to drop them when we no longer want them. This theme is highlighted during the “Club Silencio” sequence. We see a woman sing a heartbreaking song to a half empty theater. Diane and Camilla stare at this woman and cry their eyes out. During a high note the woman falls back dead, but the song keeps playing along. She is dragged off stage and the audience just stares at the empty stage still listening to the song. The audience doesn’t care; if you gave your heart and soul to them they only care about the product. This is why the cliché phrase, “the show must go on”, beautifully describes the culture in Hollywood. Side note: This movie also pays tribute to Sunset Blvd. A movie that also plays with the idea of how ugly the culture in Hollywood is. Both Wilder and Lynch studied the “human putrefaction” in our society.
I go more in depth over at my site.

Another great entry into the MCU. We learn of Quills origins, delve deeper into the Guardians and who they are, and more explosions, space battles and humor. It was everything it needed to be. I liked it quite a bit, but not as much as the first. I think what made Guardians 1 so good is that it caught everyone by surprise. No one expected it to be good. Many predicting the first MCU disappointment. But it turned into one of their best films. The only issue I have with Guardians 2 is that the focus seemed a bit off. They have two story lines that split off in the first act, but merge back into one for the third. That works very well often times in books, but for this film it seemed off. Then again if that is my only complaint, it is a good thing. It has a very healthy dose of humor with family (even one that is dysfunctional) being the main theme. Well worth the price of admission.
Now if you will excuse me, I need to get the soundtrack on my iPhone now.

Robert Altman called this the most creative of his works right before he died. This is really, really great. A mockumentary, but using actual Presidential nominees and other figures! It helps to know US history/politics/society in the last 80 years. Lots of bits of humor throughout the entire thing, and other things in the background.... I saw the updated version, which has a 2 minute reflection from 2004, while using actual events.
Not the best start, but it gets better real quick.

Alien and Aliens are both in my all time top 20 and I have zero interest in seeing this.
Speaking of "Guess who coming to dinner" mention above, I watched 2017's Get out. It's a well made thriller/horror that keeps you interested. Reminded me of a Roald Dalh adult short story I read years ago. Without going into any detail....I would call it a high class B movie. Good for the genre but nothing special.

Chloe in the Afternoon (1972, Éric Rohmer)
4.5
The sixth and final movie in Rohmer's "Six Moral Tales" series. Beautifully shot - yet again - by frequent Rohmer collaborator Nestor Almendros, the film follows a happily married, comfortably bourgeois protagonist who at some point finds himself teetering on the edge of a moral precipice as he gets tempted to cheat on his wife with an old acquaintance that suddenly reappears in his life and gradually shakes him out of his well-ordered orbit. And again, Rohmer's didacticism comes with a certain degree of detachment and subtlety, driving the final point home in the closing scene where the long-bottled emotional stress and disconnect between husband and wife finally find vent in an awkward outpour of emotion, bringing the much-needed relief. Rohmer's films are often described as verbose (this one is no exception), which is a big turnoff for many viewers, but I find it to be merely an attribute of Rohmer's uniquely charming literary style. His films are like classic short stories put on film: simple but endlessly rewatchable, like fine wine that only gets better with age.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) - rating_1_5
As I walked out of the theatre I couldn't help but wonder what poor life choices did I make that lead me to believe that going to see this movie at 10:30 on a Saturday morning was a good use of my time. I also tried to imagine what horrible bet Guy Ritchie must have lost to produce this film in the first place.
When I originally saw the trailers for King Arthur I was actually on the film's side a little. Yes, it looked like it would probably be pretty bad, but I was totally down for it anyway. I love fantasy, I've liked some of Ritchie's previous work, and I usually enjoy a few of these actors as well. Well it didn't take long at all for this bland, colourless film to lose all that good faith. It was filled with boring scenes devoid of any charm that were strangely cut between loud, obnoxious assaults on the senses, and the odd attempt at humour that fell completely flat in the theatre.
I half hoped that King Arthur would do us the courtesy of being so bad it became fun to watch, but alas, that was not the case.
I think Guy Ritchie was cursed by Madonna.
