I got the impression that Szukalski has somehow been cheated by Polish art historians. He was born in Warta, Poland in 1893, and made several trips back and forth to the U.S.

In 1936 he was declared by the Polish government to be its greatest living artist. He escaped during the Siege of Warsaw, and eventually settled in the U.S. All his unsold works had been destroyed in the bombing.

Anyway, I think you'd enjoy the film if you get a chance to see it. Yes, he was highly opinionated. His sculptures are breathtaking.

~Doc
Hm. I think he and his art were controversial. I read somewhere that even father Leonardo DiCaprio confirm, that he was fooled. I'm not expert in art, so I can share only my subjective opinion - I'm not impressed.
I didn't see this movie yet.

Timothy Treadwell, a activist that fond in grizzly bears a cure to alcoholism... there short and sweet. This was my introduction to Werner Herzog docs, and I liked how he made me empathize with Timothy in the beginning, and give me the other side of the coin near the end. All levels perfectly made.

Herzog started by saying he was not going to film pinguins, and this was not National Geographic, that I can tell you. Once again he showed like it is, beautiful landscapes, ugly dirt mess in McMurdo research station, where very interesting people worked/lived, from a woman IT specialist who once traveled to South America in a sewage pipe, researchers who badly (very badly) play electric guitars to celebrate discovering new species of aquatic life, a maintenance man who survived war and hunger that he couldn't find word to talk about, or a pinging specialist who doesn't like to talk with humans.

La Sapienza (2014) by Eugène Green

My first movie from the American filmmaker Eugène Green, which i saw on mubi.com today. It was a very idiosyncratic movie with a deadpan style reminiscent of the work Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub. A lot of the near perfect symmetric framing of the mise-en-scene made it quite intriguing to look at. Part fictionalised romance and part architecture documentary made it a rather high brow watch, not without its flaws (The scene with the Australian could be an example of a disjuncture in the movie).

All in all a quite interesting watch that wanted me to dive into his filmography.

Well, this was a fairly violent little flick. Mads plays Duncan, a world class hitman nearing retirement at which time his employer will need to pay 8 million into his pension. The employer (kind of a mix of Fat Bastard, the Yellow Bastard and Andy Warhol) would rather Duncan disappear than pay up so he sends a hit squad out to locate and eliminate the worlds top assassin. Guess how that goes? I don't know if this is based on a comic book or not but it felt like a comic book movie. Also had a John Wick flavor to it. If you like films loaded with violence, a bit of sex and guns, guns, guns (C'mon Sal, the Tigers are playin', tonight) you could do worse a lot than Polar.

Such a unique, quirky, whimsical take on post-apocalyptic existentialism. Beautifully shot in the Australian outback, the movie is deeply steeped in symbolism and explores the theme of flight as a means of escape (the allusion to the myth of Icarus and Daedalus was pretty obvious to me while I was watching the film). It's a weird movie, and an acquired taste for sure but I was really taken by the imagery, the score, the eerie, surreal atmosphere - loved it! (The Australian blu-ray looks pretty good).

I have to admit that I was expecting more from this given all the praise. I thought the look of the movie was great, but it was hard for me to buy in to Cooper's and Gaga's acting for this story. After all, it is the fourth time it's been told....

7.5/10. Best Spider-man movie ever? Quite liked the concept, the story telling. I will say that this is going to win the animated feature, although I do have a soft spot for Ralph 2. It will be out of the two I guess.

Watched that yesterday and I agree that is by far the best Spiderman movie.

Lured (1947)

A noir lite, starring Lucille Ball and George Sanders. Lucy plays a straight role, where she goes undercover to nab a serial killer. There was surprising chemistry between Ball and Sanders. Good supporting roles by Charles Coburn, Boris Karloff, and Cedric Hardwicke. Directed by the great Douglas Sirk.

Okay, this was unbelievably good. Like, REALLY good.

Good humor. Good action. Doesn't drag. The animation looks like a comic book come to life; you just won't want to take your eyes off it. It's amazing. This was probably the most fun I've had with movie from 2018, to be honest. I had no expectations going in, but I'm so glad I took a chance. Seriously, go watch it.

I seriously gave it a 1.5 after re-watching it a while back. Considering that it went up against the likes of Gangs of New York, The Pianist, and The Two Towers (and that's just the other BP nominees, never mind any other films from 2002), I would also question why it won Best Picture. I guess the Academy just liked the ol' razzle dazzle.

It could have been good. It could have been really good. Great concept, intense suspense and action sequences. The disease sounded real enough made me feel genuinely uncomfortable. Unfortunately the cliche bogged it down (a tortured hero with a strained marriage getting together with his wife, corrupted politicians, gorvement conspiracy...) I especially like that at the beginning of the movie, some hippies broke into a secret goverment health institute for no good reason (really, a health institute? What exactly do you want to get from it?) The train fell into the water along with the collaping bridge, along with several people on board. This is clearly a cheap attempt at shocking the viewers because some minutes prior to that every passagers were already moved to the "safe" part of the train.

This movie could use some good polishing.

Cold War (2018) (Zimna Wojna)
Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski

Beautifully photographed in black & white by Lukasz Zal, the absorbing story features a smoldering off-again, on-again love story between a producer/pianist and a peasant singer originating in post war Poland, with story lines in France, Yugoslavia and Germany up to 1964.

Joanna Kulig steals the attention with her sultry Simone Signoret type performance portraying the erratic Zula, while Tomasz Kot as Wiktor, a classically trained and jazz pianist, tries to stabilize their relationship.

The film leaves out as much as it relates. And the experience evokes at once both too much and not enough. We're left to imagine why Zula is determined to remain in her home land, despite a better life elsewhere, and whether she's capable of a lasting relationship. But the film seems to answer the questions in a sudden but agreeable ending.

Not exactly a good movie but it was good for my action fix. Mads Mikkelsen wouldn't be a bad choice as the go to over the hill action star for the next several years, although he could show a bit more personality. At least if he doesn't talk about ethnic cleansing fantasies in the near future. This movie suffers from the usual cliches and stupidity, but it's also filled with nice scenery, hot girls, and tons of violence.

Another Netflix film about a hit man breaking good. It's a kung fu splatter flick with an emphasis on splatter. After killing an entire village for the Triads Ito has a change of heart and decides to kill his entire hit squad in order to save the final villager, a little girl. So now the Triads and all their goons are after him and the girl. The violence and gore is turned up to 11 and there's so much it gets to be funny. There is a ton of snap, crackle and pop along with plenty of gurgling and red drool. There's plenty to pick apart in this but I thought it was fun.

I'm not much of an anime watcher, tend to only watch the really popular ones which this is one of and it's very good. Animation was some of the best (granted, not a lot to compare it to) and the story about merging dreams and reality to influence/control was really interesting. There's a lot going on, plenty I probably missed so this will definitely get a re-watch.

I saw this before, and wanted to see it again. It's very interesting. I have only skimmed the Albert Camus "The Stranger" but it seems loyal... It's basically a man being put on trial basically for non-conformist, and while always having a serious tone, there's some black humor (at least for me).

Good little British supernatural thriller about a couple grieving their daughter after a terrible incident. They are presented with a form or necromancy so that they can say a proper goodbye to their only child.

My new found fascination with the UK horror channel tends to throw up more gubbins that good films and this is definitely closer to the latter. Performances are strong all round and its a good solid story. 7/10

Probably 15th or 16th rewatch...my # 2 favorite film of all time featuring the finest work of Elizabeth Taylor and Mike Nichols. And Burton was robbed of the Best Actor Oscar. Amazing film and, for my money, the Best Picture of 1966.

3.0: Best way to describe the film? Halloweentown as if made for adults, set in a world where humans and monsters are co-existing. There are some laugh out loud moments and I thought this was a fun film with a cast including Bruce Davison, Leslie Easterbrook, Tyler Mane, Gilbert Gottfried, and Malcolm McDowell.

What was up with 2017 and using John Denver as a central plot device?

I saw what you did with that rating.

I realized the Elton John factor was all the movie really had going on for it.

I don't, what was it?
He originally gave it 2.

Watched it twice back to back, first with the Japanese hypersonic track and then with the Streamline dub, in preparation for reviewing it. You can read the review over here (https://www.movieforums.com/reviews/1991982-akira.html) if interested.
https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/tuYEDIru7mmfQDxwzsHxlgkpuJb.jpg4.5
The whole dub is still on YouTube, so I decided to introduce Mom to this one - having WiFi meant I finally could, surmising that she'd enjoy it after how much she liked Wolf Children from the same director, Mamoru Hosoda; I can't wait to check out his Summer Wars and Mirai myself and he certainly has a chance at becoming one of my favorite directors. I think it was actually even better the second time around. I couldn't help noticing this time how much it gets right - Makoto does everything a teenager would do if they found out they could leap through time, like going back to ace that test, going back to the time you had your favorite dinner, and of course, going back to eat your snack before your greedy sister could - I especially love Makoto's reaction to the latter, dubbing her a "brat," though I'll admit to having been even harsher about it since I seem to distinctly remember calling mine a "selfish bastard" after she ate my pizza and didn't leave me a single slice, not even a crumb. I was especially cocky at that age, like a hybrid of Shotaro Kaneda and Asuka Langley, so it's probably a good thing I never figured out how to time-leap, or else I'd have had to learn the hard way like Makoto does.

https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/boTrvK7Ug1DjVHyyMdw2icQ5rfQ.jpg4.5
Again, the whole dub is still on YouTube, so I introduced her to this one; she did like Trigun as well. I'm still amazed by how the new insurance girls sound just like the original insurance girls; if Funimation re-dubbed the original show and used them, I really wouldn't mind. Luci Christian, who dubs Meryl here, has really impressed me recently as Nami in One Piece and Hani-senpai in Ouran High School Host Club, the latter of which also has Caitlin Glass rising up the list of my favorite voice actors. And Trigun was what sold me on Johnny Yong Bosch as a voice actor and made me re-examine the Pioneer dub of Akira; he's really surprised me as 14-year-old Chakuro in Children of the Whales where he sounds just like a kid - shows just how much he can stretch himself. I also couldn't help noticing this time around that Gendo Ikari (father of Shinji) himself John Swasey was a perfect choice to dub Gasback, especially when the character's history comes out. Later, guys. Gotta go - Mom's hounding me to watch TV with her.

This was on Netflix and I hadn't seen it in a while so I decided to rewatch it and I was especially eager to see it again after hearing that Netflix has the 1991 Streamline dub, the only Streamline dub of a Miyazaki film that's still widely available, and really aside from their Akira dub, one of the very few dubs they released back then in general that's still widely available. It's the default track on Netflix, so getting to it wasn't a problem. Miyazaki's very first film is still a blast and it was even better the second time around; of course, the HD transfer Netflix utilizes here is a big upgrade over the non-anamorphic DVD I first saw it on. Bob Bergen, who would dub the iconic thief in several more projects, is excellent as Lupin, called the Wolf here to avoid copyright issues since there was another character by the name (actually this Lupin's grandfather) and Streamline wasn't in a hurry to get sued; for the record, Lupin literally means wolf so it's not a big deal; it actually works when you consider his reputation. The same can be said of J.C. Henning as Clarisse and the rest of the cast and the dub script is completely natural. Though it's been a while since my first viewing when I checked the old DVD out from the library, if I had to go by memory, the Manga dub is just as good; for those who prefer Manga's effort, Netflix probably has it since they offer multiple audio choices on their anime line-up. I'm still not sure if I outright prefer one over the other myself; both dubs are very good and match the film's generally light-hearted tone. So, yes, Miyazaki's first film still delivers even with its 40th birthday fast approaching. Later, guys.

- didn't expect anything probably because romance bore the sh*t outta me and this flick makes no exception. A couple of scenes were nice (Shallow scene was kinda nice) and the intro with the ''Wayside'' track was cool. I don't like the built and the conclusion is kind of meh... Bradley Cooper is good in the movie but my hate for Lady Gaga and her music just turn me off the movie from the beggining. I'm a huge fan of music in general and I don't think this movie correspond to the real life at all. decent at best.

Another typical South Korean mainstream movie, revenge+revenge+revenge = violence+violence+violence.
But this one was special somehow. I was thinking to myself that if I were the main character I would had given up and let them kill me, I got tired just from watching him try to save his life. A normal man with let's say 1,82m and 90kg, have around seven liters of blood, but this South Koreans must be vampires or something.

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)

So that is were that meme/gif of Robert Redford with a massive beard smiling and nodding comes from.

First things first - Brad Pitt is a Redford doppelgänger.

The movie; it’s good and interesting in a survival and masculine fantasy type of way. Breaking free of people, hunting, building - things alien in our coddled world yet appealing to our primal side.

I’ve been watching a bbc reality show ‘life below zero’. This is that lifestyle on film with the addition of human on human violence. This in particular gets a bit much and ruins perhaps the last third of the film.

I do think the subject matter is handled well and except for the fight scenes, realistically. Indians display brutal behaviour yet there is understanding/reasoning rather than portrayal as mindless savages. The presence of the intruding white man is apparent.

Johnson journey from pilgrim/city man to mountain man and finally to warrior legend is interesting but also felt mild. There was no special sauce that I tasted. Well shot, well acted and interesting but not finger licking.

3.5 out of 5

Brad Pitt is a poor mans Robert Redford.

100 Yards (Ross Campbell and Dale Fabrigar): A story of redemption and recovery for an American football player in the Philippines who nearly loses everything when his mother disappears, his girlfriend accuses him of hitting her, and he has been diagnosed with brain cancer. There is a great subplot involving a shady journalist who finds his moral compass hitting him hard when he is assigned to do a piece on the football player and the ex-girlfriend leaks out info about the abuse. The highlight is the football player and the young boy who is a fan of his, who introduces him to a board game called "100 Yards of Life", which becomes an inspiration for our protagonist. A great inspiring film, and I'm usually not one into faith-based films, but this one was really good.

As bad as it is there were a couple of things that made it watchable: bad fx (close up: head is about to explode, cut to: reaction shot of horrified friend, cut to: obvious dummy head exploding) and Linnea being Linnea and doing her best to elevate the material. You get a little of this and that which accounts for the 2 stars.

Oh man was that a compelling yarn I was not at all expecting.. with a soundtrack reminiscent of The Witch and There Will Be Blood and something constantly happening and evolving in it's 2 hour run time, I wasn't bored at any time, love this movie quite simply if you couldn't tell, bold, brutal and old fashioned story telling that perhaps not at every turn perfect but without taking so many risks it wouldn't have been nearly so all around entertaining. A great effort by Gareth Evans, a film maker I am now excited to see what he will do next.

For some reason I’ve always shunned sci-fi movies, but I think I’m gonna stop doing this. Second movie from the director of Ex Machina & it’s really good. Excellent cast, but Natalie Portman carried the movie.

Re-watch of his excellent movie. A good example of an actor being her rôle rather than acting her rôle.

Is it better than resurrection? I remember it being so... But at least resurrection is fun.

I'll rewatch Resurrection soon so I'll be back on this subject. According to my memory Resurrection as a whole is better but the final confrontation with the alien is kinda bad. But we'll see, maybe even today :D

I’m still waiting...nah lol.

I rewatched resurrection lately. I won’t say too much but I liked it a lot more when I was 15/16.

I watched Resurrection already. I just usually post on this thread after I've finished the review but why not...

Alien: Resurrection (1997)

More European and more comedic than previous films. I like it's odd characters and the resurrected clone Ripley is nice (Newt clone would have been nicer though).

That's true. However, I do think it creates a difficult expectation of what an Alien movie "should be" and so I don't automatically think that the series trying to chase the action-y fun of Aliens would've been a better direction. Whatever flaws the post-Aliens films may have, at least they keep it weird instead of sanding off the edges and giving us the Alien equivalent of Terminator Genisys.

It's not great but it's good enough and I'm a sucker for the story. The 30's and 50's versions are definitely superior but this one did a good job modernizing. I haven't seen the 70's version. I thought Lady Gaga did pretty well as a singer turned actress, much better than Madonna but not nearly as good as Cher. I couldn't name a single song of hers except for Shallow, and that's only because of the MoFo Oscar ballot. I don't listen to that crap anyway but I think she has a nice aura about her. I also thought Bradley Cooper was pretty good, but then I like him in everything. My wife and I enjoyed his musical numbers more than Gaga's. Nice to see the Diceman.

Navel-gazing raspy performance from Richard Burton as a disillusioned shrink trying to make sense of a seemingy random violent act by an otherwise stable (ha ha) lad. Very stagey (from the play by Shaffer) but follow-able and believable. Young Peter is incredible.

What They Had (2018) dir Elizabeth Chomko

A strong drama of alzheimer's and dementia that has it's flaws but features some really sharp acting by Hilary Swank and Liev Schrieber, - I mean Michael Shannon (who is really damn good, as usual).

As the parents are Robert Forster and Blythe Danner (Gwyneth's mommy poo). Forster really can't be bad in a movie like ever, and Danner always seems to get down the eggshelly and remote sophist-o-ditz, and so casting for this movie really could not have been that much better all things considered.

The two adult kids want to lock up their forward retarding senility mom against strong wishes from the father who wants to keep her at home with him, where she can get the most care.

I laughed a few times because this movie offers comedy I don't find too much with more recent films, at least more recent films where the UNIVERSAL logo pumps out its indie rainbow camera flares mixed in with its CGI bumper plate.

The writing is tremendous, and that's not to say that the movie completely works, because it doesn't.

The teenage subplot seems kind of too developed for its own good. I found myself kind of feeling draggy once we took frequent detours to the usual cliche troubled baby of the family. It's not that this component was over-written - it's just that the director made sure to pepper it perfectly even within the film, and even if this may be a semi-autobiographical element to this film - it didn't work for me, personally. It was there enough to want to see something at least resolve more powerfully, and it does not. I suspect the casting might've been wrong for that part which took up so much time.

And looks like I'm out of time so there's the review!

Impressively grumpy tale of 2 men stranded on an rock island manning a lighthouse when a storm comes and strands them indefinitely. Based on a true story about their descent into madness in the isolation. OK, not many chuckles in this one but the acting was superb and the claustrophobic atmosphere is captured very well. Pretty decent retelling of the standard svengali tale. Some bits are really good (mostly involving Cooper who deserves great credit for starring and directing). Its very predictable and the transition of Ally from club singer to megastar could have been done in an 80s "montage" fashion it was that linear. Good performances from the leads so a 5/10.

A very good Shaw Bros. Kung Fu flick. A young man goes to a Shaolin temple to learn Kung Fu. His goal - learn Kung Fu then take what he's learned back to the regular folks so that they may be able to defend themselves from the Manchu. It's a really simple plot. Most of the movie takes place at the temple and is about his training. There isn't a ton of fighting in this but there's enough and it's all A+ stuff.

Like the poster says it's a R and R exploitation film. Wasn't bad. Acting (hammy) and story (minimal) are on par for these types of movies. The biggest problem I have with R and R movies, and this is where this one falls, is when the revenge doesn't quite measure up to the crime. I think the bad guys in this one got off a little light. All in all not bad - there's plenty of stuff happening to keep your eyes on the screen.

Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers (1989)

Definitely thought I'd seen Halloween 5 a few years ago at my beach house, but this was a completely different movie than what I envisioned remembering. Maybe I fell asleep the time before and missed a lot, maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe I really didn't watch this movie. Regardless my viewing today had a very "first time" vibe. One thing I've noticed about the sequels is that Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance), Michael Myers' psychiatrist, keeps getting wilder and more crazed with every movie. What I enjoyed best was that the The Revenge Of Michael Myers managed to be highly comedic without even overtly aiming for that usually blatant shtick. Also did well capturing the fun spirit of the actual holiday Halloween, where teens such as Hot Blonde Samantha (Tamara Glynn) and Hot Brunette Tina (Wendy Foxworth), along with younger children Jamie (Danielle Harris), her friend Billy (Jeffrey Landman), as well as the adults, all get into the holiday. Came pretty close to crushing (in-a-good-way) the feeling of the holiday tradition's European roots with the mysterious man in black with the celtic symbol on his wrist, along with pranks, masks, costumes, tricks, and treats. It's also got an amazing 80s fashion, slinging the movie tremendously forward, and I'd gladly watch again and again. Happy I bought it.

- Rewatch. I love it once again, I think Gregory Hoblit is one of the most underrated director ever and he truly deserved more credit and fame imo. Gosling and Hopking are terrific in this courtroom thriller. I love the storyline and it's really entertaining. The ending is so goooood and just that make it worth a watch no doubt. Homerun.

What They Had (2018) dir Elizabeth Chomko

A strong drama of alzheimer's and dementia that has it's flaws but features some really sharp acting by Hilary Swank and Liev Schrieber, - I mean Michael Shannon (who is really damn good, as usual).

Took your advice and watched the film last night. The story has pretty familiar elements, so the success of the production rested on the acting. The heavyweight cast came through like champs.

It was nice to see Shannon play something besides a kook. He's got a range to play just about anything, so his character was very believable. Robert Forster really had to carry the film, and his portrayal did the trick. Danner was good even though she didn't have much dialogue. Hilary Swank strikes me as somewhat limited, but she fit the bill perfectly here.

The film held one's interest throughout, and despite a somewhat abrupt and surprising finale, it's a touching and true to life picture.

Backbeat (1994)

If one is a Beatles fan, this film is an enjoyable bio-drama of their time in Hamburg at the clubs before they became big. All the early pre-Ringo members are developed very nicely. The way they must have been at about aged 18-19 rings pretty true.

The major portion of the film was spent on Stuart Sutcliffe (the bass player before McCartney switched from guitar) and his relationships with Lennon and Sutcliffe's girlfriend, Astrid Kirchherr, and why he decided to leave the band. Tragically, Sutcliffe died at 21 from a brain hemorrhage.

For fans of True Detective (seaon 3), Sutcliffe was played convincingly by a very young Stephen Dorff. Even at that age, one could see that he would turn into a very fine actor.

A very nice biographical romp. Doc's rating: 6/10

Blindspotting (2018)

Pretty good feature here that had a kind of "Brothers Mcmullen" feel about it (probably due to the fact the 2 main actors wrote it). Issues like the gentrification of their old neighbourhood are tackled in a funny way that sometimes sits a wee bit uncomfortably against the bigger issues portrayed here. Still enjoyable, 6/10.

I don't think it's a 10/10 movie, but I do think Heath Ledger's performance alone makes it worth watching.
I have some doubts as it's quite easy movie for teenagers, but I watched it few times, as an adult person and really enjoy it. And I have to admit it wouldn't be painfull to watch it another time:D

At Eternity's Gate (2018)

Willem Dafoe’s Vincent Van Gogh was the performance of 2018. The film itself was modest in scope, almost boutique in feel, which, added to the fact that there were no social justice or fashionable causes advocated, may have caused the Academy members to pass over this unique and striking performance.

There have been several good screen portrayals of the fascinating painter, making it all the trickier to develop a character about whom so much has been written, and displayed so thoroughly. It’s hard to say whether the director, artist Julian Schnabel, had any input on the characterization. The screenplay was co-written by Schnabel, his girlfriend Louise Kugelberg, and the veteran Jean-Claude Carriere. We would guess that Mr. Carriere did most of the heavy lifting on the treatment.

The sound palette and photography were very important. The music of the wind, rustling wheat fields, and Van Gogh’s firm brush strokes blended with the beautiful scenes captured by cinematographer Benoit Delhomme. To his credit they didn’t attempt to mimic the essence of the paintings with film technique, but rather offered them both as a duet and a nod to Van Gogh’s inspiration.

Likewise they resisted the use of art film techniques to accompany the subject’s well known mental decline. Tatiana Lisovskaya’s score was adequate, but at times the unaccompanied piano portions didn’t seem to want to commit either to dissonance or tonality, instead providing sophomoric chords or intervals that were confusing in their ambiguity. Yet at other times the music perfectly matched the mood.

Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of Paul Gaugin seemed off the mark. The treatment seemed too conservative for such an opinionated and assertive character. On the other hand Mads Mikkelsen gave a powerful and nuanced cameo performance of the priest who ultimately decided to allow Van Gogh to be released from his last asylum stay. All the other character parts were first rate.

In a masterful decision the producers did not dwell on the infamous ear cutting event. In fact it was not even shown, but left only to the imagination. One wonders if Dafoe exhibits more resemblance to Van Gogh from his right side, since in the film they incorrectly chose the left ear for excision, whereas in real life it was the right.

The movie title took its name from one of Van Gogh’s works completed two months before his death, Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity’s Gate), painted from memory of an earlier pencil drawing. The time frame is the last few years of his life in France, first at Arles, and finally at Auvers-sur-Oise. His death has long been thought to have been a suicide, but more recent evidence has emerged that suggested accidental death. This is the route taken by the film.

He desired "not to see a landscape but only the eternity behind it". This is an excellent study of Van Gogh’s final years, and a memorable portrayal of the afflicted artist by Willem Dafoe that should not be missed.
