This is a very intense film about German prisoners defusing mines on the western coast of Denmark after the WW II . One viewer on another board said it made "The Hurt Locker" look like a picnic.

The moment any of these characters spoke, I knew I didn't like them. I guess they fit into the egocentric pompous world of art and art criticism and I get the irony of me sitting here critiquing a piece of film art too. The thing about this movie is that it is not as clever as it thinks it is and Gilroy wants to satirize the art world, but he doesn't lean far enough one way or the other while he looks at it.

Its pretty rare that I get to see a horror film in the cinema so I'm actually still on a high after seeing it last night. Director Peele's first effort, Get Out, wasn't a film I particularly enjoyed the first time but after a rewatch, I can definitely call myself a fan, so much so that I was really excited to see this!
After reading up a bit about it last night and this morning, I can understand peoples complaints about the lack of explanation on a lot of points but for me, it didn't take the shine of the film at all. The acting is so strong, in particular Nyong'o who plays her part[s] to perfection! This includes the kids too, excellent performances all round, which is something that often goes missing in these types of films, oh and a huge shoutout to Moss, I'm glad she was more involved than I originally thought. I loved the use of music, I got 5 on it, NWA and the Beachboys scene were nothing short of sublime, I'll never hear these songs in the same way now!
Wanted to say more but I'm out of time. I enjoyed this even more than Get Out and more than likely will end up buying it on dvd. You can add my name to the list of Peele followers, cant wait to see what comes out next!

Think I'd rather have a couple of drinks and a good philosophical conversation with Tarkovsky than watch this movie. This movie must be top five on the Zzzz-factor ratings list.

Like the cover – I don't know whether the typeface for 'Solaris' matches the film's title card but it's good.
I enjoyed the remake and thought it was well made. I've seen some of the original film but found it difficult to concentrate on at the time.

Title card in the film is Russian times new 'roman' font.. think Criterion remade the cover-art. Re-watching the remake soon, I don't recommend this one, unless you're having trouble sleeping. :D

That reminds me of Bernard Lodge saying that he "felt like using Times New Roman" when called upon to revamp his first Doctor Who logo (see below). I know which one I prefer :p. Luckily his 1970 one was a bit more crafted shall we say, and kept coming back into use over and over again.

I swore off of Jess Franco movies for a year. Lasted about two months. However, if ever there were a story that would work well with Franco's MO (sex and violence) it would be Jack the Ripper, the serial killer who mutilates prostitutes. While not a stylish masterpiece it is one of the best Jess Franco movies I've ever seen mostly because it attempts to have a plot. That and Klaus, who looks like he's really having a blast with this one. Obviously, with a Ripper story line, there's plenty of sex and violence along with the other Franco staples: seriously bad dialogue, awful acting, terrible dubbing and dated gore fx.

Judy in that cut-off tux doing "Get Happy" is worth the price of admission alone. This movie was made during one of the unhappiest periods of Judy's life. Shortly after completing the film, she tried to commit suicide and was fired from MGM. The "Get Happy" number was actually filmed six months after the rest of the film was completed...TPTB felt the movie needed a stronger finale. Judy lost 25 pounds during the six month interim and you can tell. As unhappy as Judy was, it never shows onscreen.

Excellent movie that I rather wish I had watched twice, but now I’ve mailed it back to Netflix.
Also would have helped to Wiki the plot summary first as it’s a spy thriller by John le Carré, whose books aren’t always easy to follow.
Excellent acting especially from PSH.

3.5: Writer-director Michael K. Feinstein's comedic and realistic look at the world of dating apps as it pertains to a group of friends and how it will affect their relationships. It's a pretty good film that has its share of laughs in terms of one particular character and his way attempt to overcome his breakup with his longtime girlfriend, but there is also a sense of reality as it pertains to a currently engaged couple.

Not as good as I'd hoped, as it felt like a lot of the funny parts were in the trailers. There were still notable funny parts not in the trailers though, but did the movie dragged on a bit too long. The story had some good elements, but it didn't pull together in the end like a lot of these movies tend to.

Jeremiah Johnson 1972
Adventure | Drama | Western | 1h 48 min
Starring Robert Redford, Will Geer, Delle Bolton | Directed by Sydney Pollack
Based on the book 'Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson'.
Technicolor, Panorama-vision, great cinematography shot on location in Utah accompanied by a beautiful score by John Rubinstein and sung by Tim McIntire.
(The film starts with a 2 min. musical overture, and halfway there's a 2 min. musical intermission)
Redford with one of his best performances. A classic tale about; MAN, nature, survival, life, love, friendship, death, loss, revenge. A real total package film, earning a spot on my all-time 250 list. This movie is what the eyebrow waxing boys generation of today needs right now.
https://i.imgur.com/pY88re4.jpg
Trivia:
'The role of Jeremiah Johnson was originally intended for Lee Marvin and then Clint Eastwood, with Sam Peckinpah to direct. However, Peckinpah and Eastwood did not get along, so Peckinpah left and Eastwood decided to make Dirty Harry instead.'

No even dumb fun! Jason Statham is a very bad actor - he’s a poor mans van damme. Ffs this is crap. A production budget of 130 million.
Did it bring joy to peoples lives by distracting them from the sad reality’s of life such as Jason Statham being paid multiple millions to sleep walk through a movie made in a computer and written by a Siri while they work hard 5 days a week or more trying to raise a family and put food on the table and then their kids see this cool trailer about this cgi giant shark and ask to see the movie and what money you had in reserve is used to buy tickets and you see Statham in 3D and he’s seemingly on methadone. Ffs. Life is cruel.
These movie are meant to distract you not draw your attention to Statham and his millions.

I struggled with whether to see this or Pet Semetary (a remake of one of my favourite movies) or Dumbo (also a remake of a movie I love). I went with the story I haven't seen yet. I don't regret my decision, but I wonder if the other movies would have been better. I feel like I'd already seen the best parts of Shazam from the trailers. I find comedies get less-funny the more I see them, and I felt like the jokes in this movie were already old by the time I'd actually watched it.

Pet Sematary 4 Very strange to see Us such glowing reviews while this film received somewhat mixed ones, I actually preferred this one of the two. Pet Sematary is a slow build with and almost a soft R but it's gorgeous and incredibly unsettling. John Lithgow is the standout of the film which is great because Fred Gwynne was so good in the original I was worried Jud wasn't going to be right but Lithgow took a different approach to the character and it paid off well.

Ah interesting documentary on the Brazilian military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985 and its influence on the current Brazilian political landscape. Media sources claim that the movie is pro-dictatorship but from my impression it felt like a relatively objective look at the dictatorship, they never claimed it was not a dictatorship but they argued that it was not as repressive as some claim it was. They never deny the dictatorship fought the communist guerrillas but, well, they were terrorist organizations, so it was like fighting Al Qaeda, I mean it's not the same as repressing peaceful ideological developments, which the documentary notes became the tactic of the communists (going from guns to books) after they were defeated in the battlefield.

Lords of Chaos (2018)
I don't know why Åkerlund wanted to make a film about Norwegian black metal scene in the early 90s when he clearly seems to despise the subject. Maybe its his personal apology for being involved in extreme metal himself. It's entertaining at times but I really didn't like its almost comedic tone and attempt to make everyone involved more or less an idiot and a clown.

Not my sort of funk but the story itself was enjoyable enough from a historical viewpoint. Emory Cohen was pretty mis-cast but Rory Culkin was believable. I did have a chuckle when "Euronomous" pointed out Vargs "Scorpions" patch with barely concealed hate :)

The Natural (1984)
An old fashioned feel good movie, it came on TCM, and I couldn't turn it off, despite having seen it a number of times before.
The first rate production is a little schmaltzy, but includes good performances from a heavyweight cast, including Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley, Barbara Hershey, Robert Prosky, Joe Don Baker, and one of my particular favorites: Richard Farnsworth.
There is excellent cinematography and costuming. Most of it was shot in Buffalo, NY, and the settings were ideal. There is a surprisingly good orchestral score from Randy Newman which is almost Williams-esque.
The role of Roy Hobbs perfectly suits Robert Redford, and it ranks as one of his best characters. If you haven't seen it, or care for a reboot, The Natural is a modern nod to some of the great Hollywood films of the '40s and '50s.

I chased Stan & Ollie with this and enjoyed it as well. I caught bits of it way back when but had forgotten most it. This movie had considerably more weight and context of how the world affected Chaplin and his movies, but still missed a few elements for me. For example, each segment of his life represented here mostly fell on the later effects rather than the progressive cause of whatever conflict presented. I mean, we entered his life at the end of each arc. I had a hard time caring as much as I could had I experienced what placed him in these conflicts to begin with. At least that's how it seemed to me.

1st Re-watch...so glad I re-watched this because I am ashamed to say I missed a lot the first time...Jordan Peele is a mad genius and totally deserved the Oscar he won. There are couple of dangling plot points and a couple of extra endings, but this is smart, intriguing entertainment and I'm upping my original rating.

Eye in the Labyrinth (1972)
Not exactly what I was expecting from a so-called giallo. I guess the ending is enough to make this part of the genre but otherwise it's more like traditional whodunit with weird characters. I was mostly bored but the ending, decent looks, some nudity and jazzy soundtrack kept it from being completely terrible.

CAPTAIN AMERICA
THE FIRST AVENGER
http://i.imgur.com/B7UrFv5.jpg
‘Captain America’ captures the pride of a nation, the power of confidence and the pages of a comic book, but even so there are some cracks in the red and white paint of this weird and wobbly Marvel vehicle that shields it from any real impact...
When compared to other Marvel origins stories and characters, ‘Captain America’ is quite different... His backstory is necessary for the eventual evolution of the character and the setting is equally important to properly ignite the character and the “universe” he comes from. It definitely wants to capture the vibe and spirit of the source material, which was released in a time where patriotism and heroism and hope were very crucial things.
Like the character of Steve Rogers and the mindset of those who created him, ‘Captain America’ is a little prettier, a little glossier and a little less gritty than what war actually is. Everything about this superhero flick feels a tad superficial and quite a few things rings false to me. Somehow it also feels like - while Cap did need a different approach than others - the overall style of the film seems fitted for something else than what started the MCU. ‘Captain America’ does feel more like the actual pages of a comic book thrown onto the screen than ‘Iron Man’, for example. But it also seems like it has a harder time adapting to the screen than ‘Iron Man’ did.
You could say that ‘Iron Man’ feels like it’s based on a comic book... ‘Captain America’ feels like it’s based in a comic book. There isn’t the same sense of weight to the latter and it feels more flimsy and funny looking. And together with the more fantastical elements like the cube making people dead and a skull being oddly red, it sometimes comes of as rather cartoonish. There’s definitely a b-movie vibe to this and the cheese is equally shared between the movie often pandering patriotism at you and Red Skull melting people with his blue laser gun... it’s all just a bit... much.
I did actually find the first 45 minutes or so to be extremely well handled and I loved the little hints to our hero and villain throughout; like Cap using the taxi door reminiscing of the shield he will use later on as well as the several references to Red Skull before we actually see him (the face being a bit “off” at one point, the blood on the metal skull, the red paint portrait painting and so on). I enjoyed myself so much in this subtle thematic shadow game that I felt underwhelmed once “the lights came on” and everything was out in the open. It looked fake... it seemed dumb... and it appeared less exciting, unfortunately.
But overall there are things to enjoy throughout, like some fun dialogue that bounces back and forth between the characters, some decent jokes as well as some pretty exciting and well executed action scenes that elevates the entertainment level towards the end of the film. The Russo brothers came along afterwards and put most comic book action scenes to shame, of course, but on its own ‘The First Avenger’ does quite well.
This is a movie I can have fun with and while it’s mostly on the surface of things I find quite a lot of interest in the far in between moments of genuine weight and heft, which does give even the lesser scenes more depth, even when most work best as simple entertainment. ‘Captain America’ does its duty as basic origin story but could have gotten more down and dirty with it. But I guess you have to go through boot camp before you can go to actual war...

Grubby little shocker with two very notorious difficult scenes to get through. Not entirely sure what the point of it all was. We see the degeneration of the titular character as he slowly becomes more feral due to the influence of his new group of friends and drug abuse. Shot well, good soundtrack and good performances from a largely debut cast. 5/10.

You Were Never Really Here (2017)
I don't feel like I fully 'got' this movie. Both in the sense that I hadn't a clue what was going on, and that I didn't really feel what others seem to have felt for it. Some of it seemed done before, some seemed in poor taste, but on another day I might have found it amusing. It's arthouse ugly, so not one of those films that is nice to look at. Especially Joaquin Phoenix's beard. But two things stood out (in a good way): first, the soundtrack and second, the scene in the diner at the end - that seemed a much better representation of depression on film than any number of jarring flashback scenes.

The Wailing (2016)
This started off really promisingly; it looked really great and was genuinely creepy and you definitely didn't know what was going to happen next, or if it really happened at all. Partly because of an 'everything but the kitchen sink' approach to the genre: we get zombies, mysterious diseases, freaky storms, possessed kids, random murders, possibly-evil animals, ghosts, demons, and probably other things that I've missed out. And at some point that just takes it all over the top. At first I liked the main character being a bit bumbling, it sort of fit, but then it just gets tonally weird. He spends so much time covered in blood that it's not jarring anymore, there isn't much left at stake, and the characters' actions get less plausible. Perhaps this says more about my taste than the quality of the film, but there's a trade off between tension and just outright relentless horrible stuff and when it tips too far one way I lose interest. The child actor who plays the daughter was really good. A bit of a mixed bag, in the end. I feel like the rating is harsh because there's some really good stuff in here, but in the end I just didn't like it anymore and wanted it to stop.

It rarely goes beyond passable rock-biopic impersonation, but he replicates Morrison's singing voice well enough and the on-stage freakouts are arguably the high points of the film. It will depend on your tolerance for Morrison, which I don't really have.

spoilers ahead !!!
I was looking forward to seeing this movie based on the Oscar buzz about Glenn Close's acting performance. And she could have even won based on that alone, though I found this film uneven at best. When it started I was thinking- at last- an unabashedly intellectual movie about intelligent and talented people. The theme is about a man who has won the Nobel prize for literature, and his family. This noble ( pardon the pun) premise soon devolved into a gothic family uber-drama , with an underpinning of a supposedly feminist viewpoint, which I for one just could not buy.
One begins to wonder, early on, why the writer' s (Jonathan Pryce). genteel wife (Glenn Close) with a helicopter presence, and his sullen son (Max Irons) , seem to do everything to dismiss and thwart the man's enjoyment of the prize. As the film unravels, we learn that the writer did not actually write the books he was receiving the prize for- although he may have germinated the initial ideas, it was his wife who did the heavy lifting - she was the writer. Not only that, he has been an adulterous husband all through the marriage . And bullied down the self confidence of their son, an aspiring writer, even as the wife tries to buoy the young man's ego.
Interlaced with the family dysfunction is the presence of an oily writer (Christian Slater) who wants to do a bio of the husband with a full reveal of his dastardly deeds.
The crux of why the wife winds up in this position of uncelebrated ghostwriter seems to stem from a scene when she, as a young lady, receives a warning from a female author- which is: don't bother to write, don' t bother to seek fame and excellence- it is after all the 1950s and the men control the publishing game and will never give you your due. It's fortunate for us that there were, in real life, some other women who did not buy into that mantra; like Harper Lee. Not to mention Emily Bronte, Mary Shelley, Edith Wharton etc.
(Btw I am in no way taking issue with the reality that earlier generations of women faced great challenges and obstacles, but if this film was making a case for the fortitude of a woman's harsh struggle, it didn't work for me. Norma Rae did a better job, or for that matter, Erin Brockovich)
For this viewer, there just seemed something false in how this movie played out.
And you may wonder, as the plot ensues- will this self contained, perfectly gracious woman ever let the simmering resentment she has for her husband seep through the cracks of her facade like smoldering lava?
Will she try to get even?
Ah yes. she does, she sure does; and although it may be a far cry and 30+ years from boiling a rabbit - Glenn Close sure knows how to get even with her man.
In short, she stages a temper tantrum that causes her husband to have a fatal heart attack on the day he receives the Nobel prize. That'll show him.
So what started out to be an enlightening film with thoughtful and passionate musings on the nature of genius and creativity , and multi dimensional characters that you don't often see explored onscreen - became, for this viewer, a sophomoric soap opera.
I gave an extra half star than I originally planned to for the performance of Glenn Close, which was quite powerful. Along with a nod to Christian Slater for his believable role as Satan's right hand man.

Saw Rashomon (1950) on the big screen for the first time. Completely forgot how sexist it is. Like women are either helpless or evil, take your pick. Do love the whole symmetry with the state of japan at the time etc, and the use of the rain as this sort of fake barrier.

It took a couple of years, but it's finally made its way Stateside. Naoko Yamada makes it pretty clear women can direct anime, too. She treats its subject matter with the care and sensitivity it deserves where a male director might not. Of course, credit also has to be given to Reiko Yoshida's screenplay. Some have bemoaned how much of the manga ended up on the cutting room floor, but come on, there was no way all of the manga was going to make it into a 130-minute film and it doesn't even feel truncated or thrown together at all. Needless to say, having jaw-dropping animation (that looks like it was just animated yesterday on the Blu-ray) doesn't hurt things any, either. The English dub is really good, too. Robbie Daymond is excellent as Shoya, the bully who became the victim and is trying to find redemption; I was stunned by how quickly you end up caring about this guy after all the things he did. A stroke of sheer genius is hiring actually-deaf Lexi Cowden to dub Shoko, the deaf girl Shoya bullied who has the same nickname and becomes his one shot at redemption. The fact that Cowden is actually deaf only makes the character feel all the more real and makes the bullying scenes that much more devastating. Kristen Sullivan is more than satisfactory as her sister Yuzuru, who actually pretends to be her boyfriend - yep, they (aside from Shoko, obviously - that would be weird) actually think she's a guy until she reveals herself - before seeing that Shoya really has changed and has no intention of hurting Shoko ever again. Graham Halstead does a fine job as Nagatsuka, who decides Shoya is his best friend after Shoya prevents the theft of Nagatsuka's bike by letting the thief "borrow" his own. He is especially convincing in a scene near the end where he's oddly reminiscent of Anthony Pulcini as Kai in the Pioneer dub of Akira; I'm thinking of a specific scene ("Whaaat?! Kaneda! You're alive! I thought you were in there! I thought you were in there for sure!"). Sara Cravens is also very good in her limited playtime as Miyako, Shoya's mother; she has a great moment near the beginning where she threatens to burn Shoya's money (1.7 billion yen) unless he promises he won't commit suicide. The rest of the cast are also excellent and the dub script is completely natural. It's not the easiest film to watch, the scenes of bullying especially devastating, but it's a rewarding and emotionally satisfying film and you'll definitely pick up something worthwhile if you stay with it. It's no wonder Makoto Shinkai (yes, that Makoto Shinkai) had such positive things to say about this one and frankly, I'd love to see what Yamada does next. She's got the talent without a doubt.
Gerald’s Game
Some scary and creepy moments but too few and far between. Then a strange ending that seems tacked on and disjointed. It’s a strange last 5 mins.
Slight spoilers and discussion for those who’ve seen the film: Have an issue with certain scenes showing you too much and making it like a traditional sex scene. Makes me uncomfortable watching. Not sure who would want to watch that ordinarily. I like a more subtle approach - not as subtle as the shinning though which I only cottoned on to by reading an analysis.
Overall not a great experience let down by a strange ending. Think they could have made the dog more menacing.

Balibo (2009)
Starring Anthony LaPaglia and Oscar Isaac, directed by Robert Connolly, this is a gripping docu-drama revealing the invasion of East Timor by Indonesia in 1975. It is a little known story in the west, but the invasion resulted in upwards of 200,000 deaths.
The narrative focuses on the missing Australian film crew, and the subsequent search by another newsman along with an eventual president of East Timor, who went to try to find out information about the journalists' disappearance.
It watches as a documentary, which adds to the tension and viewer involvement. One is left to wonder if the newsmen were stupid or just possessed.
Available on Amazon and streaming services.

They're Creeping Up on You....What the world needs is a new and improved cockroach. In an effort to control cockroaches "naturally" a company creates a roach that feeds on other roaches but only survives for one life cycle. What could go wrong? As it turns out life...finds a way. The roaches don't die after one cycle and they do what roaches do - develop a taste for everything - pets, people, crappy diner food, etc. and some of the roaches, especially the Queen, get pretty big. Like people size. Surprisingly, there were some decent practical gore effects reminiscent of the Fly (not quite THAT good) or Society (on par). Not a very good film but solid B-movie fare.

This was on my watchlist and I finally decided to get to it after it showed up on the top 100 horror countdown. I had some issues at the beginning, specifically with the tone and the brightness. These are personal issues rather than actual issues with the movie, but the movie was good enough so that I was able to eventually overlook them. It's just over 2 1/2 hours long but I was never bored and it never felt drawn out. The little girl was tremendous and I have no complaint with this making the countdown.

Re-watch and every bit as worthy (in the correct way) as my previous watch. A genuine simplicity to this film...a straight tale. Heartbreaking and inspiring and non-judgemental. Scorsese at his best. As a side-note, I read that Benicio Del Toro was originally lined up for the Sebastião Rodrigues role. that would have been interesting...not saying that Andrew Garfield was a bad choice but maybe lacks the gravitas that the part needs.

What Goes Up (2009) 3
A real curio- set in 1986 Steve Coogan plays a reporter who is sent to a small town to do a piece on the Challenger mission and befriends a group of teenagers that his college friend (who just killed himself) taught. Hilary Duff and Josh Peck are in it, obviously keen to shed the Disney/children’s TV connection. An incredibly downbeat film but moving central performance from Coogan, even when the plot points become outrageous. The whole message of the film is life doesn’t make any sense so it may be quite apt that the movie doesn’t.

Birds of Passage (2018)
Finally got the chance to see this, as part of Belfast Film Festival. Following Guerra's near perfect Embrace of The Serpent, I've been looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint. This will/has draw comparisons to Scarface, Narcos, The Godfather and I've even heard The Sopranos linked too. The movie, beginning in 1960's rural Colombia, tells of the escalation of illegal drug trading between indigenous people.
Some of the images are hugely impressive and on the big screen it really was a memorable experience. The fact it was based on a true story makes it even better.
Recommended.

'Foxtrot' (2017)
Directed by Samuel Maoz
https://a.ltrbxd.com/resized/sm/upload/d0/ri/7d/3m/foxtrot-1200-1200-675-675-crop-000000.jpg?k=ca79b0eb2a
What a brilliant movie. Samuel Maoz has created a gem. As with his previous feature 'Lebanon', this movie is a political statement - this time about Israel and its’ perpetual state of war, and the fatigue and distress this places on a nation.
Lior Ashkenazi plays Michael - a father grieving for his son, and his performance is nothing short of mesmerizing. The way his facial mannerisms capture anguish and anxiety is just unreal.
The film is split into three distinct acts, all of which focus on the characters being trapped in some way, which is the whole point of the film - a nation is trapped and repeating the same mistakes over and over…….the futility of conflict. This is achieved by Giora Bejach's stunning cinematography, which includes overhead shots of mosaic floors, wide angled desert vistas, and cars lit up in spotlights. The movie is worth watching just for the way it looks. But there is also substance to back up the style.
I can’t recall too much music in the film – Maoz’ filmmaking just lets dialogue – (and also at some points the lack of dialogue) do the talking as it were, save for some moments describing the very title of the movie, and why it’s called what it’s called. The all round result is a movie which is so brilliantly crafted in every way that the 1h53m running time flies by.
The film was seen as controversial in Maoz’ homeland of Israel due to its apparent criticism of Israeli military forces. Maoz thankfully doesn’t seem to care. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

The original concept of this movie was a lot different than the finished product...Vincente Minnelli was originally slated to direct, but Garland and Minnelli's marriage was deconstructing at the time and Garland's therapist recommended that they not work together at this time. Gene Kelly was originally signed to play Don Hewes, but broke his ankle (stories differ as to how) and Fred Astaire agreed to come out of retirement for the opportunity to work with Garland. The pairing was so successful that MGM attempted to pair them for two more films, but the personal hell that was Garland's life prevented that. This film is pretty much flawless though...go to you tube if you want to see a fantastic Garland solo that was cut before release called "Mr. Monotony." But this movie is my # 1 Easter tradition.

Saul fia [Son Of Saul] (László Nemes, 2015) 3.5
Quite a compelling watch even if a little lacking in credibility
Forbidden Games (1952)
A story of two children and how war and death affects their lives. Good acting by both kids and interestingly naive but still kind of twisted story in nice compact package. Wasn't sure what to expect so I guess I can call this a positive surprise.

Didn't pay any attention to the run time before I started watching it but it got to the point where I was getting shifty in my seat thinking Dang, wrap it up already. Wasn't bad but whenever a 2 hour plus movie feels every bit of it's run time that's usually not a good thing.

The Kid Who Would Be King (2019)
Decent kids film, starring some kids with famous acting parents. A bit funny, a bit scary, a bit about working together, the usual. Slightly shaky grasp of geography and logic (no idea why it needed to be set in London), but proved entertaining enough, especially all bits with Merlin (old or young).
3.5
Slaughterhouse Rulez (2018)
Written and directed by Crispian Mills of Kulashaker, this is a horror comedy that needed a bit more of both horror and comedy. I'd been looking forward to this, then looking forward to it a bit less when I saw the reviews, in the end it was a bit of a mixed bag. It's about an hour before the horror kicks in, before that it's a jumble of boarding school tropes that owe a little bit too much to films that have gone before, like a Frankenstein's monster stitched from parts of If, Another Country and St. Trinians, without quite enough of a satirical varnish. I usually like references and homages, but some of the ones here fall a bit flat and feel forced. There's a lack of overall coherence to the plot, themes or well, anything that is disappointing, but there are good moments. Sometimes I wasn't sure who it was for, as it didn't seem quite clever or grown up enough for grown ups, but had way too much swearing and dubious sex jokes to be for kids. Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders, looking about 25 but still not in the upper sixth, apparently) plays the Northern lead, out of his element at the school full of increasingly demented toffs and has an underwritten romance with a posh girl. Asa Butterfield is good as his gay roommate and has the film's best line. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have memorable supporting parts. It just needed a good script polish. Or two. Maybe three.

La Veuve Couderc - 6/10
Instead of just a score, I'll give a little story. While I was watching, I noticed how Simona Signoreta looked like the girl in my dream last night, a girl I went to school with since the 1st grade, but who I'd also seen fairly recently, since she worked at the eye clinic. Coach Bobby Knight was in my dream, and then it hit me that she died in Indiana, shortly after losing her job at the clinic. It wasn't until the movie I linked them together (the look..).

An interesting and worthy historical/biographical drama film about prof. Sir James Murray (Gibson) and Dr. W. C. Minor (Penn) and the origins of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Story delivery and ending were it's weaker points.

Dragonslayer (1981)
Apparently I'm on a nostalgia trip. Dragonslayer was a kid favorite of mine that my uncle let me watch. We argued over the ambiguity of the title: Dragon 'slayer' or Dragon's Lair. I was a kid. He was at least college age. Whatever. I love this movie! Mostly it holds up with the effects, especially the way they kept the creature relatively hidden until later in the film. The miniature sets and puppetry were great and there were only a few very obvious matte effects that stood out, but all in all it was still a fun watch. Audio was rough, however, with several spikes that killed my ears. For instance, when the village smith hammered his dragon lance. That metal on metal *shhhtink* is still ringing in my ear =\
I think I need to watch Excalibur (1981) soon. Maybe Q (1982), as well. Totally went through a dragon/mythical phase that I've yet to grow out of. That and ninjas.

https://i.imgur.com/mskQCIT.gif
A pretty extraordinary Sci Fi film from Claire Denis. Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche are as good as ever. But it's Mia Goth who steals the show. It's a cerebral Sci Fi film in the same vein as 2001, Solaris and Instestellar. There are no monster's here - at least not in the traditional sense. There is a lot of violence and some disturbing scenes.
Exestentialism, humanity, theoloy and procreation are all explored.

A South-Korean independent movie about the journey of a young child in a floating monastery being watched by a old Buddhist monk on the seek of enlightenment. Have you ever searched your memory for an action from your past to find a justification for something that happened to you now? This is probably the most simplistic movie I've ever saw in my life, the young boy is like a flower unbutton, every season is a stage of life and they managed to express those changes with the almost absence of dialogue, with a beautiful cinematography and reveling pictures. A beautiful depict of the cycle of life.

You need to use the "Go Advanced" button (underneath the 'Quick Reply' box) to format your reply .... and once there click on the 'paperclip' in the options (top row, 3rd from the right). From there you can specify a file on your device to upload to the Movieforums server and then use the option to insert the relevant code for the image into your post.
If you are already doing all that and still getting the problem then I suggest you private message Yoda for help.

I'd meant to watch this before the Directed by Women Countdown, but didn't get around to it. I wish I had, I think it would have made my list. The Fits is about a young girl, Toni, who joins a dance group at her local gym. A girl in the group has a fit, and gradually other girls start having unexplained fits as well. You wonder whether it a mysterious illness or they are all faking it, whether Toni will have to have a fit in order to fit in. It's very, very well observed in terms of what it's like to be that age, to want to fit in, to see and think about puberty and growing up, to both want it and fear it, and still to be a little kid and hand upside down off things. The entire film is set either in the gym or around it, you barely see any adults, which is a limitation but a deliberate one which actually becomes a strength of the film, it is entirely within the world of the gym and the eyes of the 11 year old main character. It was very un-Hollywood. And only about 70mins long.

It's a really good film. It reminded me a bit of 'Pariah', a Dee Rees film which you might enjoy seeing as you liked The Fits.
A Separation - 10/10
Trust Farhadi in making a deeply affecting movie out of everyday issues and leaving you gasping for breath.

I'm one of the few people on the planet who thinks this movie deserves the Best Picture Oscar it won...Mary Tyler Moore also got my vote for Best Actress over Sissy Spacek, another opinion on which I think I stand alone. Robert Redford's direction is flawless as is the performance of Timothy Hutton as the tortured Conrad. Also, Donald Sutherland was totally robbed of a nomination.

I'm not sure who would poo poo over this film winning best picture, but if it's a lot of people then all I can say is that people are generally not very emotionally intelligent.

Most people here think that Raging Bull should have won that award.
Hagazussa (2017)
An odd German horror (or horroresque at least) film that has some resemblance to The VVitch but is much slower and lacks coherent story. It builds an oppressive atmosphere with images and sound almost forgetting the narrative completely. Maybe I just didn't get it or then there's nothing to really get. Anyways, it's definitely not bad if you're into slow, weird and depressing films.
2.5 (maybe even .5 more)

Oh, please. The 3 times I've tried to watch RB I was bored silly. That's just me but I dont think it was MS's finest hour. Very well made film, but just not interesting to me personally.

I thought Raging Bull was good, but not as good as Ordinary People, and, as you said, not close to Scorsese's best work.

Went into this apprehensively, glad to say didn't read any reviews. I really bought into the generation gap and Clints performance. Hope he is around to make more, his acting was unfussy and tender at moments.

Pariah has been on my to-watch list forever, but it doesn't seem to be out on dvd or streaming where I live.
