Ladri di biciclette (I, 1948, Vittorio de Sica) - 3.5
Sadly, i don't see the masterpiece so many people seem to see in this movie. It starts out very good and the ending is really strong, but i didn't find the middle part to be that great. I'll give it a rewatch some time, though.

Pandorum (2009) - Christian Alvert (German Science Fiction)
I had mixed feelings about this. I really like the concept - a couple of guys waking up on a spaceship not knowing why they are there and slowly finding out they aren't alone - but by about half way through I just felt like I'd seen it all before in different settings and it wasn't doing anything to elevate itself above similar movies. It was a decent watch but in the end I was a bit disappointed.

Somewhat odd horror/comedy that was of interest primarily because Chiaki Kuriyama (best known for playing 'schoolgirl bodyguard' Gogo Yubari in Kill Bill) is the lead. Sadly the film is somewhat disjointed and doesn't really manage to mix the elements successfully for me leaving even the better horror aspects in it to feel somewhat meh.
LOL I remember watching this. it was funny.

Men in Black II (2002) - Barry Sonnenfeld (American Science Fiction)
In a perfect world sequels would be made because there is more of the story to be told or more of the first film's "universe" to be explored. The Godfather Part II is a great example. MIB2 is unfortunately of the "make it the same as the first so we make the same amount of money" type of sequel. As a movie it is ok but it is as a cynical cash grab where it really excels ;)

The First Grader (2010) - Justin Chadwick (British Drama)
I had high hopes for this movie. The story of an 84 year old former freedom fighter choosing to go to school to learn to read and write had the potential to be a really interesting look into modern Africa ... or it could have been an overly sentimental, cliched mess. Unfortunstely Chadwick chose the second option. It became pretty tedious very quickly.

This could easily be called Taken 4 and nobody would even bat an eyelash. Neeson and Harris were both really good despite the predictably of the movie itself and the action scenes were pretty well done actually. The Overall story has its emotional moments and is surprisingly pretty good for a supposed mindless action flick. If you like Liam Neeson or just action films in general this one does not disappoint.

The Prestige(2006)4.5
Okay don't hate me I just watched the Prestige for the first time. I don't usually ever like Christian Bale in anything(He's the main reason I don't like the Dark Knight Trilogy) but I watched this movie. Halfway through I knew what was going on but the story was still so great. Watching these two people get a hold of this great power and the two very different ways they use it is just fantastic. The ending was great and this movie was simply brilliant. This is easily my favorite Bale performance.

[RIP Paul Walker] Okay, i looked up and saw this got a 12% on Rotten Tomato. This movie is so much better than it's reputation. Some of the things in this movie are pretty obvious(Obvious Foreshadowing is Obvious) but it was a very fun movie regardless and I'll watch anything with Gerard Butler he is always great. I also like Time Travel movies so that alone made me like this movie. The entire cast was great in my opinion and the movie has some great fighting sequences.

The Seasoning House (2012) 3
This is the story of young girls being forced into the sex trade in a military setting. One of the girls ends up picking off some of the soldiers, a little far fetched, but done in a semi-realistic way. The movie is pretty well made with decent acting, but is overall an average movie. I give it extra marks for some shocking, brutal scenes that are very well done and give the movie some bite.

Probably Eisenstein's most famous film but not his best IMO - that honour goes to The General Line from what I've seen so far. For me this was more interesting than it was a great film with the exception of the Odessa Steps segment which was excellent. At this point I'm starting to find the lack of balance in his films a bit tiresome but he still made very good movies.

Next Stop, Greenwich Village - 8.5
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fc/Next_Stop%2C_Greenwich_Village_FilmPoster.jpeg
Paul Mazursky is my new favorite director. Two days ago, my life was changed (it's always changing a little) when I saw "Harry and Tonto" and then today I see another amazing film. I'm already feeling empty knowing that there will be a day I'll have finish all of his movies, that is, if I can find them.
I had been meaning to see the film since early afternoon, but I was on AOL, chatting in the same room as usual, was waiting for a lull in conversation, but that didn't happen. It was the perfect activity before this, as we were talking about life, art, film, heroes, aspirations, etc...
This movie is about a young adult who wants to be an actor, and leaves home to do so, even though his mother is hysterical about him leaving. He has a girlfriend, and has a clique of friends, mostly young, artistic, but they all differ. Some are more closer than others, but there's always something happening. Great, great film.
Anything else I mention is a spoiler. It's the people that make the movie, the situations. It's very humorous, the writing is clever. Shelley Winters is amazing in this, and has a lot of great actors. The lead actor is the most unknown actually.
It's in my top 100, actually 50.
43. Next Stop, Greenwich Village (Paul Mazursky, 1976)

A truly special and spectacular autobiographical comedy-drama about a New York actor trying to make the big time. The entire cast is tremendous, but kudos to young Lenny Baker who turns in a seemingly-effortless brilliant performance in the lead role. R.I.P.
My absolute favorite Mazursky film is his autobiographical Next Stop, Greenwich Village, eligible for The '70s List. I love everything about that film, including a recreation (by the awesome Lenny Baker) of his acting audition for a role in his first Hollywood film - Blackboard Jungle. Jeff Goldblum is also hilarious in that scene.

A few movies I've watched recently.
The Butcher Boy - 8/10
Now this was excellent I can only see my rating go up in the future. I had never heard of this until I read through the 90s countdown and someone (Holden I think?) had it on their list. Like most people I think I usually have problems with child actors, but Eamonn Owens was fantastic as Francie Imo, one of the best performances of the 90s for me. While his character was usually detestable he really did a great job of making you feel for him, whether it was during the tragedy near the start or his problems with his friend Joe, it became apparent during these moments that all he really was a troubled kid. The last 30-40 mins were excellent, not knowing which parts were real and which were fantasy. Stephen Rea also did well as his distant alcoholic da, and I loved the score and script.
West Side Story - 5/10
Had no idea how to rate this while I didn't hate it, as I expected going in it just wasn't for me. The film looked stunning, fantastic cinematography and sets and to my surprise I didn't actually hate all of the song, I particularly enjoyed "Gee, Officer Krupke". Sadly though that was about the extent of my enjoyment, I thought the acting was bland, the dance-fights were cringey to say the least and the story was just Romeo and Juliet in a different setting so nothing to interesting there. Despite me not enjoying it I won't have a problem when this ninevitably turns up on the countdown, mostly because if I'd liked a few more of the songs I could've looked past my problems and ended up liking this.
Vivre Sa Vie - 8/10
The Magnificent Seven - 7/10
The IPCRESS File - 6.5/10
Alfie - 6/10

The sequel of HTTM, this time they have to look for Lou's murderer in the future. I watch the 2 of them with my family and it can be really funny but sometimes really disgusting. But at the end I think it was a good movie, still not reaching 4 of 5. I'm sure I saw Bill Murray, at the bar, it's just a quick hello. Tons of well-known actors.
Are there any others you would recommend? I usually can't watch more than one film a day, and since I've had the internet, I've been slacking.
Did you see "Harry and Tonto?"
Camo, obviously I think West Side Story and Alfie are the best of that set, and Vivre Sa Vie is garbage, so I'm completely passé. "America" is also a great song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhSKk-cvblc
I thought you would have a problem with those Mark.
Alfie was OK, its just I find Michael Caine really irritating and the constant talking to the camera didn't help. I really didn't expect to like Vivre Sa Vie after I wasn't big on either Breathless or Contempt, not sure if I'm getting more used to Goddard or if Vivre Sa Vie was just the right one for me, but I had a really good time watching it.
Also as I said I didn't hate all of the songs "America" was one of the decent ones, the only one I actually liked was the Officer Krupke one.

I have never seen an Eisenstein film. I've rented a few, but never had a chance, although I do have this movie. I have about at least 5 that I have to see before, perhaps more since I've found Mazursky, but I'm going to give this a shot, since it's short as well.

My third Kurosawa and I keep having the same issues, I want to get past them but I just can't. The cinematography in his films is always top notch. What I can't get past are the characters and the dialogue. They lack any subtlety or nuance and that always keeps me at arms length. Besides the cinematography my favorite part of the film was procedural aspect of the detectives. Once again with Kurosawa I am glad I watched but I am dying to love one of these films and am getting less optimistic that it will happen for me.

Maybe, I am trying. As was the case with a lot of the Miyazaki films, the characters feel completely one dimensional to me. Makes for a very cold viewing experience.

I grew up on Japanese media as I did with with American, so I cannot really understand the perspective of someone like you who never had any substantial early (childhood) contact with Japanese media. It's kinda learning a cultural language I guess.
I don't care as much for French movies as I do for American or Japanese, perhaps because I wasn't raised "on" French media. Though French film lacks the diversity of Japanese and American film (specially lacking in the science fiction/fantasy department).
Try watching Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy and other super-Americanized Japanese cartoons, I think it's the most accessible Japanese media of any type for westerners. Satoshi Kon also appears to be very accessible for western movie buffs.

Since 1960's American movies start to become more obscure then non-English movies will tend to appear. Even I voted for a Goddard movie in my 60's list (not among those mentioned by the way), while I only have about 5 American movies in the 25 movies I submitted.

Wow, I really loved this one, and thought the detective stuff was the low point of a great film.
Nice themes of how people are two-faced in business early on. Having a stockbroker mentality when it comes to values. Showing how profits are higher with cheaper quality, and exploitation of workers and consumers. Mifune at least has pride in his work, but has the dilemma. And how interesting. Someone who works for you has his kid stolen because the kidnappers thought he was you son, and then having him, a rich man, still have to give a million dollars to save him. The friction in that room was so intense, everyone was in a bad position, and in a horrible situation, perpetuated by the other businessmen. Mifune uses his methods of ownership control stakes, majority to the most powerful, but the others use their method of cruelty, and then we find out about an entirely different problem - heroin abuse.

That's a good suggestion - my second favourite Kurosawa behind High & Low. Throne of Blood is great also.
Sean, what's your favourite Japanese film? You don't seem to have enjoyed Ozu much either so maybe that period of Japanese film just doesn't work for you. Maybe more modern directors like Koreeda or Nakashima might work better for you and then you could go back to the older directors. As much as I love Ozu it was Tetsuya Nakashima that made me appreciate Japanese movies first.

I did enjoy Woman In The Dunes. I really like Like Someone In Love, but I suppose that counts about as much as Letters From Iwo Jima would. I also ended up enjoying two or three Miyazaki films quite a bit. Like all foreign language films, I basically am just getting started so I don't have a huge pool of movies seen to draw from. I haven't hated anything I have seen from Japan yet, I am just having a hard time connecting and falling in love with anything.

I really enjoyed Like Someone in Love too and thought Letters From Iwo Jima was Eastwood's best film. I actually thought both Kiarostami & Eastwood did really well in terms of mixing cultures - to me the films felt Japanese but with a bit of a twist.
If you can find them perhaps you might like Nakashima's Memories of Matsuko or Koreeda's Maborosi. I think Still Walking is Koreeda's best but its style is very reminiscent of Ozu so Maborosi might be better.
I think with films from a different culture it can take time to connect. I'm like that with Russian films and to be honest I still don't like them that much - there is just a divide between me and their films that I can't get past it. It was like that to a lesser extent with Iranian films and it was really only with Kiarostami's Close-Up that I felt like I was really grasping the way people were thinking.
Anyway, keep throwing Japanese films into your watching mix and hopefully you'll find films you love and I'll keep trying with Russian films ;)

I don't think I've ever seen a movie use darkness to create thrills and chills this perfectly, but as well as mask the flaws in the plot and become a bit repetitive. This first sentence makes the film look bad but suspense totally outweigh cons. I recommend it to anyone, just don't expect a masterpiece.

About Time (2013)
Supposedly a romantic/comedic/time-travel flick (that's quite a mash-up there!) that is, when you break it down, more about the relationship between a son and a father (Domhnall Gleeson and Bill Nighy, respectively).
Tim (Gleeson) learns from his dad that all the men in their family can time travel at will, but only in their own lifespan. In other words, like it's stated in the film, they can't go back in time and kill Hitler. Only within their own life experience. Once you get that out of the way, pretty much at the first of the flick, we're off and running.
Yes, there is romance when Gleeson meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) but he does make mistakes and uses his "power" to go back and fix them. I went into this thinking it would be just a romance but it's got a bit of everything, all to do with the life experience. I'm not real familiar with Gleeson except for his part as Ron Weasley's brother Bill in the last two Harry Potter films. He's quite good in this, as is McAdams, but I really loved Bill Nighy in this. Yes, I'm a pretty big Nighy fan, and he was excellent as the father great at giving advice to his loving son, but not above skipping around that advice from time-to-time.
This is a pretty excellent movie and I'd recommend it to anyone.

So far Blume In Love is reminding me of "carol and......." - And for me to stop a movie to go to the store, to get something to smoke, well, maybe it's the sex stories that seem redundant after you've seen a thousand of em.

The Godfather(1972)4.0
"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
I am one of those people that's never watched The Godfather before, I know shoot me now, being regarded as one of the greatest, if not the, greatest film of all time. It's not my favorite movie of all time. I've always wanted to get into the gangster film genre but idky I never really liked any of them. Marlon Brando was fantastic though as Vito, and also gotta say is so weird seeing a Young Pacino, i didn't even recognize him at first. The only problem I had with this movie was the length, that usually doesn't take away from a movie for me, but I had to take breaks during this thing, some spots were fantastic but then there's other parts of the movie I could of easily skipped and I wouldn't of missed out on anything. I am planning to watch Part 2 here soon, but I gotta tell ya, I was a little underwhelmed, I'm not saying the movies bad (It's probably the best gangster movie i've ever watched), but being one of the greats in film history I was expecting a lot more. One thing I have to say is watching this movie It didn't even seem like it was from 1972 in terms of picture quality and such. Most movies digitally remastered from the 90s and before usually you can still tell they are from that time period, but with the Godfather, it looks like it actually came out sometime in the past 10 years.(Although the gunshots and blood and such you can tell are very old and very fake lol). Favorite scene is definitely the Horse head in the bed scene, I got a kick out of that.

There's too many details to take in in one viewing, the first hour tries to tell you as much about the family as it can, but even then it's hard to keep up with what's going on with all the characters. It wasn't until the second time that I truly thought the film was a masterpiece, and now I think it's one of the best films of all time.

Written and directed Paul Mazursky, something I hold in high regard. It's not impossible to take a best seller and make a good movie. Most movies considered "humorous" aren't to me, but I can tell from watching three of his films in the last week shows he has my kind of humor.
This movie is really witty, funny, cute, and has style. It's very interesting.

I don't like going into films thinking along those lines. That's a common response to Citizen Kane also. Placing a movie somewhere lofty relative to film history before seeing it the first time can basically set it up to disappoint, rather than just letting each film speak for itself

Godfather's one of those best movies which can blow you away the first time, AND continue to reward repeat viewings. That's what it did for me. Although i don't rewatch it near as much as some other favorites. Star-packed cast yet for me it's Richard Castellano as Clemenza who steals the show. Can't fathom being letdown. From the Mafia wedding party, to Don orchestrating the horsehead scene on studio head Jack Woltz for refusing Johnny Fontane his part, to the failed assassination attempt on the Don, Sonny Corleone's brief takeover and bloody demise, opening the door for Michael, who pops Sollozzo and McCluskey and lays low in Italy (love the Italy part), all building towards killing the heads of the other Five Families and Moe Green in Vegas as Michael's Godson gets baptized. I got all that, the ending was good, there was just a lot in between I was not a fan of, like Michael staying in Italy after killing those two guys, didn't like that much at all. I think the movie was ruined for me because of all the stuff from it that every other movie has taken from. So I wasn't shocked (Besides the horse head and Sonny getting gun down) by almost anything, The movie was still good quality and I liked it. People have said that Part 2 is even better so I'll get to that one soon.

Godfather II is the best sequel ever.
You should go into each movie thinking they're all The Godfather or The Creeping Terror - an even-playing field. I think a lot of people are predisposed to love or be disappointed by something before they see it, and therefore can't see the movie for what it truly is. Yeah, that includes me too - I've just understood it longer. :)
Lo sceicco bianco (I, 1952, Federico Fellini) - 2.5
Fellini's first movie which he directed single-handedly (he did "Luci del varietá" together with Alberto Lattuada) is a shallow mix of comedy, romance and drama. The first half of the movie is actually enjoyable, but the second half was pretty mediocre and apart from the scene with Giulietta Masina without any highlights.

Escape From New York (1981)
I've seen parts of it before but this is my first time seeing it in full. Love the atmosphere and imagery. The sets and effects were really well-done, especially for an older sci-fi film with a low budget. I found the film really fun to watch, and Snake Plissken is an awesome character. It might not be considered as legendary as some of the other sci-fi films that came out around that time (Star Wars and Blade Runner) but I enjoyed it just as much.

It's Alive (1974)
Fun B-movie about a killer newborn baby on the loose. There is never an explanation as to why the mother gave birth to a mutant baby, but it doesn't matter. Once it's on the loose, that's all that matters. The movie works with the baby never being completely shown but you see bits and pieces of it in the shadows. It turns out that it's really scared and reacts out of fear...well, this little sucker is scared all the time! Sharon Farrell, a fine character actress, is the mom, and actor John P. Ryan is pretty super as the put-upon dad who is trying to make sense of it all. There are some known character actors in the cast like Andrew Duggan and Michael Ansara, who appears for about two minutes as cop on one of the murder scenes and is never seen again!
But the fun is all about the baby, and his crying "WAH!" sounds like it was voiced by a 20-something adult, and provides some laughs throughout. There are photos on the internet that show what the baby looks like in full. There are two follow-ups that I really want to see after experiencing this. Good trash.
The scene below is after the birth...not afterbirth...I kid!

Stop Making Sense (Jonathan Demme, 1984)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Stop_making_sense_poster_original.jpg
I remember when this showed up at the beginning of the Eighties list, and Mark said he was a big fan. He posted a few clips of some of the songs, which I enjoyed and since then I've listened to the odd song from the Talking Heads now and then, but I had never got round to listening to them properly.
Yesterday me and my brother were listening through a load of songs on YouTube, and "Psycho Killer" and "This Must Be The Place" both showed up, which reminded me that this was a band I needed to explore. I was actually sitting on my computer listening to some old Jan and Dean songs tonight when "Psycho Killer" once again showed up in the suggested videos. I listened to it, and then suggest was the full film, available on YouTube, so I decided to give it a go.
I had no idea this was just the concert, that there was no footage mixed in, stuff like group members talking, audience talking/reactions, before and after. This is the performance captured in its purest form. It's nearly 4am in the UK here and I've just about finished the film, it's kept me awake, I thought it was incredible.
"I've got a tape I want to play."
David Byrne, what a performance. From the single acoustic version of "Psycho Killer" to the build up of the full group. Lots of fascinating songs, and his body must be made of rubber. I don't think I've ever seen someone so alive, his artistic vision mixed with Demme's great direction makes for pure cinema, I've never seen anything like it.
I have to give it a full rating. I've gave it to a few films recently, and I've enjoyed this just as much as film. For what it is, it's pretty much perfection. It kept me gripped from start to finish, it's a sign of a great film to keep me awake at such early hours. I didn't intend to watch this tonight, but I'm glad I did, I'll probably try and listen to some more songs from them now, and watch more videos about them and the film.

For the most part this was pretty funny and had a really good script. The only things that stopped me rating it higher were that I'm not completely sold on whether Colin Farrell can actually act and Ralph Fiennes, who I do think can act, really annoyed me in the short time he was on screen. Those aren't really big issues but just stopped it from being a "great" movie.

Pretty much my entire rating was for the visuals - including the effects. Didn't particularly notice the score - but I often don't. I'd imagine I'd enjoy the trial scene more on a repeat viewing but it had already lost me by that point.

Mad Max 3: Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
I had heard that the third Mad Max is viewed as the weakest, but I wanted to go into it with an open mind. Unfortunately I agree with the majority. First off is that many elements that made the first 2 great; the massive, sprawling wasteland and the vehicular chaos, is omitted for 85% of the film. Instead we have this wacky plot set in a village running off of pig feces, and then Max gets caught up in a tribe of little kids. Near the end we do get a taste of the Mad Max-style vehicle combat which is definitely the best part, it's also fairly unique from previous entries by adding in some comedic elements into the action, which worked pretty well. That wasn't enough to save the film though, even the fight in the film's namesake, the Thunderdome, wasn't that great.
In conclusion, just not as good as the first 2. I am glad though that I got the whole trilogy watched before seeing the new one this weekend!
Pros: Mel Gibson, vehicle combat scene, some good comedic parts
Cons: Weak plot, weak setting, unlikable characters

Anyway, I liked this better than TD&DW but I still didn't seem to appreciate it as much as most people do. I enjoyed the concept and thought it looked great but as can often be the case with movies from this time I found the acting frustrating - particularly from David Niven who I've never really been a big fan of. Anyway, overall it was good but perhaps not as good as I hoped it would be.

The Counterfeiters (2007) - Stefan Ruzowitzky (Austrian War)
A movie focussing on the people with the responsibility of making counterfeit British & American banknotes during WWII - the plan being to de-stabilise the economies of those countries. What makes it more interesting is that they were mostly Jewish and were basically doing it to keep themselves alive. In many ways I wished that this movie was able to make more of an emotional connection with me - I perhaps found it a bit dry - bust it was still a very interesting film. Apparently this won the best "foreign language" Oscar in 2007 - of the other nominations I've only seen Nikita Mikhalkov's 12 which I though was much better.

To this day, I can't listen to the studio version of "Burning Down the House" as the concert film version trumps it mightily. I just have to see the visuals as the song plays out, also. The back-up singers gyrating to the opening strains of the song, David Byrne and his rhythm guitarist strumming and running in place, just the whole thing. Love it!
The Face of Fu Manchu (1965)
Christopher Lee plays the villain of the title, set against his arch nemesis, Nayland Smith of Scotland Yard, played by the great character actor Nigel Green. Manchu has hatched a nefarious plan to make the world obey him (that's the way he puts it :) ) by threatening them with an airborne poison made from the "Black Hill Poppy" seeds from Tibet. ;)
It's all very fun and droll. There's a scene where Green and a friend engage a group of Chinese baddies in the vault of a museum, and except for one bad guy getting stabbed accidentally, the two Brits appears to just beat the guys to death and rather easily at that! This is followed by an unfortunate line that still made me snicker, when the curator exclaims, "Wait a minute! You can't leave the museum littered with dead Chinese!" :p
From what I've read, there are several sequels starring Lee, therefore I must seek them out.

I didn't find this movie to be consistently compelling, but it leaves a strong overall impression. There's a significant twist, but even before that, I was kept guessing as to where the movie was going. The pleasant tone of the movie doesn't seem to match the dark content. That's not something that I would normally like, but it works perfectly here. The music is a part of that, as are the terrific performances. Great recommendation from Citizen Rules!

Dark comedy starring David Warner and Vanessa Redgrave that depicts a mental illness quite bizarrely.

Tokyo Drifter (1966) - Seijun Suzuki (Japanese Crime)
Suzuki is a very stylish director and it is style that is the focus of this odd yakuza movie. It starts off very well but as it goes on it becomes less interesting and by the end I was wishing it had spent a bit more time developing it's characters. I think it's a movie worth seeing but I was left slightly disappointed.

The Marc Pease Experience (2009) - Todd Louiso (American Comedy)
The third film by Louiso I've seen and definitely the worst but despite it being met with universal disdain when it was released I didn't think it was that bad. It's a comedy that is never particularly funny but it is often almost intolerably awkward which I give Louiso credit for - we are supposed to cringe when watching these characters and I certainly did. The theme of living in the past is interesting and I actually thought it was one of Jason Schwartzman's better performances. Overall it's not a great movie but perhaps better than most give it credit for.

An Unmarried Woman - 5/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/29/Unmarried_woman.jpg
Started really good, but the last hour felt forever as it drags, nothing really happens. Maybe it's the redundant story of sexual and any other pleasure repression. The scenes with the "unmarried woman" and her new boyfriend last too long. I did like the scenes with her and her ex, Michael Murphy. I think they skipped the best possible parts, the daughter and her father. In the film, it's confirmed that they've talked, but they don't share more than 4 minutes together.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
After seeing the entire trilogy in preparation for this one, I must say that I think this was the ultimate vision George Miller had in mind for the Mad Max universe. He took every advantage of today's technology to create what is what I think the best Mad Max film (as much as it pains me to say, being a Mel Gibson fan and all)
Tom Hardy was great as Max, and just like in previous entries he is thrust into a situation where he's not the focal point, but is pivotal in its resolution. Charlize Theron is also great as Furiosa, and I understand what people were saying when they said it's more her story than Max's. Nicholas Hoult as Nux, in my opinion, stole the show; he was a great, crazy character along with many of the other villains.
The action sequences were simply unreal in this, and there were a lot of them. Everything you saw from the original Mad Max trilogy is turned up 10 notches, and thankfully the CGI and other effects were used to enhance the spectacle rather than getting relied on like a crutch like many modern movies do.
I must say that this film completely surprised me, it did everything right in an age where so many big CGI films get it wrong. This is without a doubt the best film of the year so far, and one of the best action films in recent memory.

Meh, I like time travel movies so I was very curious about this movie, I went in almost completely blind and it was alright. I have to say though. The special effects in this movie are fantastic. I thought it would be some low budget crap but it was great. The overall story is okay and the ending was sort of predictable. Big problem is the camera angles. The found-footage genre is becoming very over saturated but this is the best one I've seen in a while, that doesn't really help its case as the movie itself is pretty forgettable. Not bad but its just a very average film. It's a very cool concept, mediocre execution.

The Unforgiven (1960) 3.5
http://www.allclip.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/unforgiven-burt-lancester.jpg
I usually read about a movie after I watch it, but I read up on this one beforehand, and I'm glad I did. There were a lot of problems and tragedy during the filming of this movie. Three crew members were killed in a plane crash, Audie Murphy almost drowned, and Audrey Hepburn was thrown off a horse, breaking her back and resulting in a miscarriage. Knowing these facts made watching the movie a more haunting experience.
Director John Huston and the studio fought over what type of film this should be. The central theme of the movie is racism against the American Indians. Houston wanted to push the issue, while the studio wanted something a little more mainstream. Houston ended up not being involved in the final cut, so the movie wound up landing somewhere in the middle. I would've loved to have seen Houston's vision come to life. Houston and Hepburn would end up basically disassociating themselves from this movie, and it was such a disaster, the production company went out of business.
The racial aspect makes it a fairly upsetting movie to watch for it's time, especially with some of the slurs, but this made the movie stand out for me. Hepburn and Burt Lancaster are terrific as the headliners, and the story has an interesting twist and a powerful ending. From the top 100 Westerns list, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend this movie. It's a fairly average movie minus the backstory and the disturbing element, but I really enjoyed it.

Ex Machina 10/10
Alex Garland's fantastic directorial debut is a thought provoking, suspenseful sci-fi that has all the elements needed to make a great film - interesting story, powerful performances, especially from Alicia Vikander, amazing visuals complemented by a score that helps create the tense atmosphere. Although it relies more on ideas than on effects, the beautiful cinematography really stands out... My eyes were glued to the screen.

Mad Max: Fury Road
(2015, Australia)
Directed by George Miller
6.5/10
I really enjoyed this film. I love action films.
After the first action sequence, everyone in the theatre released from holding their breath, a large sigh was heard from everyone. It was a pretty intense scene that lasted a good 15-20 minutes it felt like.
The actor who played Immortal Joe in Fury Road played Toecutter in the original Mad Max.
I rank the movies as follows : 1) Mad Max, 2) Mad Max 2: Road Warrior, 3) Mad Max: Fury Road then 4) Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

Wanted to re-watch this after seeing Foxcatcher last year. Miller is becoming one of my favorite modern directors. I sure wish he made films at a little quicker pace. Capote bears a resemblance to Foxcatcher in many ways. Both take place in the Midwest where Miller does a tremendous job of setting a chilling tone while still showing us the beauty. I love the cinematography in both these films and they are quite similar. Both are true stories of chilling crimes. Both have very mannered award nominated lead performances. After watching this I am a bit befuddled. Carell got quite a bit of flack for his performance that I don't remember Hoffman receiving. Definitely gets my radar up a bit as I find them both exceptional. Great re-watch and I am glad I got around to it.

It's agonizing, painful and shocking...it's a lot of stress for the weak-hearted like me, but at the same time I didn't realize when two and half hours went by...I am not big fan of ultra violence or hyper reality and I don't say things like, see how great the film was...it showed everything...for me, most of the times, it is a sign of weakness rather than strength of the film, you go to the extent of really breaking the helicopter or 'let's see their genitals' when you have lost the plot somewhere...but this is different, the story itself kind of justified the extent of cruelty it manifested, and then there was this wonderful way of presenting it...I loved the way the film worked with such a bare minimum plot and pulled it through all the way...that deserves a lot of credit...

I don't see daylight between this and the Nolan's version...having said that, this one's little better because it's shorter, smarter and less sentimental...in the Hollywood remake there were also few added details and sub-plots that I thought worked pretty well, for example, the problem in the police department, for which Pachino's colleague thought that the shooting was deliberate...anyways, enjoyed both the versions, this is fractionally better...but unlike Honeykid I can't say that that is always the case...I certainly liked Minghella's version of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" much more than the French original...

Sorry, what I meant was that everytime someone says they really like/love this film, I always tell them to see the original because it's better. Not that remakes are always better than originals. Though they usually are.
I felt the constant daylight and the state of tiredness, almost to a state of catatonia, came across much better in the original. However, it might be that this was my first exposure to Nordic crime thrillers, so that hit me much harder than the subsequent hit. Even now when I see Anglo attempts at Nordic crime, the atmosphere just isn't right. I've nearly finished Fortitude and even that still doesn't have that real Nordic feel to it.

I love how I made this thread explode with that one sentence!
I think the problem was I went into Pulp Fiction with all these expectations like I did with the Godfather(Although I still liked the Godfather) because of everybody praising it then when it ended I was like "That's it?" I'm not really a fan of movies that switch the timelines around like Pulp did...I think I need to start going into movies with zero expectations lol
I think the main thing is you seem to like a lot of other Tarantino, so you shocked folks. We are used to the few knuckleheads like Slinger and Raul who don't like Pulp, but they don't like Tarantino at all. It is unusual for someone to love him but not Pulp.

loved it. maybe it's not as good as i gave it credit for, but when it was over i felt a way i'm not sure i've ever felt before and i feel like if i tried to articulate my feelings or intellectualize the move i would be doing a disservice to my emotional reaction so i'll just leave it at that.

High Noon (USA, 1952, Fred Zinnemann) - 4
Great movie! I really enjoyed this almost-real-time-concept. But while the main theme song was quite good, i thought it was used too often.

Time After Time (1979) 3
I enjoyed this movie, but it just lacked the oomph I needed for it to go any further for me. I loved the story and I thought it was executed well. I always like Malcolm McDowell but I prefer him as a hellraiser. Mary Steenburgen was adorable.

Every Night Dreams (1933) - Mikio Naruse (Japanese Drama)
The story of a woman working as a bar hostess to support herself & her son after her husband leaves. A nice movie but one of the weaker efforts by Naruse. It contains some weird camera work with constant zooming in for close ups, like a bad daytime soap, and it becomes very distracting after a while.

The Baron of Arizona (1950; Sam Fuller)
Patton Oswalt said this about it: "The Baron of Arizona plays like an old West episode of Blackadder—and features one of Vincent Price’s best performances." With never having seen an episode of Blackadder, I can't confirm the claim, but there is an off-kilter, wacky type of vibe. It's not quite laugh-out-loud hilarious, but a humorous undertone is undeniably present.

Pretty impressive for a film that apparently only cost around $850,000 to make. A fantastic and fun new zombie film from Australia. Could have spent a little more on the eye contact lense effects though...

Throne of Blood (1957)
Saw this at last, and loved it. Knew going in that this was Kurosawa's take on Macbeth, but it was still original enough that it stands on its own. Toshirô Mifune is terrific as the warlord who is poisoned by the whispering of his wicked wife, who drives him to betray his king and his friends, all to no good end. Isuzu Yamada is great and creepy as Mifune's wife, and her "out damn spot!" moment is very intense. Also awesome is the "pin cushion" scene (those who've seen it know what I mean :)) Very moody and intense.

I'll try to catch it somewhere. I've only seen Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, and soon Yojimbo because Turner Classic Movies had a bit of a Kurosawa marathon recently. I know of Rashomon and its story but haven't been able to catch it. I've got cable with HBO, YouTube, and buying from Amazon as my movie outlets. That and going to the cinema next week to try to catch a couple. But I'll keep my eye out for Rashomon and any Kurosawa, really.

I'd rank what I've seen from Wilder as follows:
1. The Apartment
2. Sunset Blvd.
3. Double Indemnity
4. Stalag 17
5. Some Like It Hot
I'm going to be watching more of his films as I work my way through the '50s. I'm looking forward to giving Stalag 17 and Some Like It Hot another viewing each, and catching Ace in the Hole and Witness for the Prosecution for the first times.
Glad to see your ranking of Some Like It Hot. I was immensely disappointed by it, it isn't close to being a bad film but considering its reputation I expected a lot more. Sorry to her fans but I've never been sold on Marilyn Monroe's acting ability, she's an icon but I sometimes question why, while undeniably beautiful I find a lot of actresses from her era more attractive and the vast majority better actresses. Maybe I haven't seen her best work, and admittedly I'm going by a few performances, but I'm not a fan sadly.

Marilyn Monroe is beautiful, that is true, and I thought she was fine in Some Like It Hot, but the movie itself was merely good. I'll watch it again in hopes of a higher opinion, but to me it will probably always be a mildly amusing movie that never lives up to it's gaudy reputation. I hope I am wrong, because I really like the other four pictures a good deal.
I like Some Like It Hot, but I'd easily rank three of those above it. I haven't seen Stalag 17 yet.

I love Witness. Laughton is fantastic in it. It is very dialogue driven and has a ton of humor. Ace In The Hole was just okay for me.

The first two acts were imo kind of weak. I didn't find the conveyance of the start of the rebellion to be convincing and there were some scenes where i found it hard to follow what excactely happend. The rest of the movie is much better. Especially the scenes in Odessa and the preparation for the final battle were really well done and really intense. And the soundtrack of this movie was just amazing (i'm talking about the re-recording of Meisel's original soundtrack by the Babelsberger orchestra in 2005)!

I absolutely adore Billy Wilder so it's kind of embarrassing for me to "rate" his films as I love most of them. So far I've seen ten of his films.
Billy Wilder films I'd consider putting in my top 100 favorite movies list if I made one today:
The Apartment
Sunset Blvd.
(^those two would be especially high)
Some Like It Hot (one of my personal favorite comedies)
Double Indemnity (basically the perfect noir)
The Lost Weekend (alcoholism done right through brilliant acting and filmmaking)
Witness For the Prosecution (incredible first watch but has enough to stay interesting on rewatches)
Other Billy Wilder films I've seen:
Sabrina
The Seven Year Itch
A Foreign Affair
The Front Page
I still really like these four films (especially Sabrina), but I wouldn't put them on the same page as the other six I've mentioned.

I didn't like Milland so that didn't help. I thought the story was too convoluted to seem real. Very manic. The idea of forcing a cure on somebody who doesn't want one, never works. Maybe that is part of the point, but I didn't care for the shenanigans. I did see Days Of Wine And Roses right around the same time. I liked that quite a bit so that probably didn't help.
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover (GB/F, 1989, Peter Greenaway) - 2
Wierd movie. Although i couldn't delve into it, the had a strange fascination to it. I quite liked the aesthetics and the music, but that wasn't enough to keep me interested until the end. Alltogether, i can't say i liked this movie.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/Gate_of_Flesh_poster.jpg
Gate of Flesh (1964) - Seijun Suzuki (Japanese Drama)
Another highly stylish movie from Suzuki - but this one has a bit more depth than the other two of his I've seen. This is about five prostitutes getting by in "occupied" Japan. Takes quite an aggressive approach to most of its themes and is very critical of America's impact on Japan which was unusual at that time in my experience. Ends up being quite a depressing movie due to who the prostitutes are "forced" to become.

Animal Kingdom (2010) - David Michod (Australian Crime)
My new favourite Australian movie. A great true-ish story of a Melbourne crime family with Jackie Weaver putting in an excellent performance as its matriarch. Aside from Weaver most of the rest of the cast are very good also - particularly Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Guy Pearce & Luke Ford. This was the first film of Michod's I'd seen but I'm looking forward to watching The Rover now.

When the Last Sword is Drawn (2003) - Yojiro Takita (Japanese Drama)
The story of an unusual Samurai doing anything to make money to support his family. Overall this was a decent film but it's too long and seems to lose focus as it goes along. I liked the characters but lost a bit of interest in them by the end.
