Magnificent 7 (2016)
7/10
I thought more backstory for the 7 characters should've been given. I thought Peter Sarsgaard, who played the main villain, looked bored most of the time. Still, some good lines and action.

In a future bellicose apocalypse full of infertile inhabitants, a man must help the only pregnant woman get to safety.
I forgot how really good this movie was. Clive Owen is the perfect anti-hero forced into saving humanity. Incredibly disturbing, as it mirrors and magnifies many of the issues going on today.
Phenomenal action sequences, puts you right in the middle of chaotic urban combat. Suspenseful all the way through.
Great to see Michael Caine with long hair, farting and smoking pot. The yummy Julianne Moore, despite her lack of screen time, was another nice lagniappe for which we thank the filmmaker.
Very entertaining, hugely suspenseful, and somewhat disturbing film.

I wanted to like this film. After all, The Wailing has critical acclaim from critics, and I wanted another South Korean film to add among my favorites, with I Saw the Devil and Oldboy. I didn't like this film, however. Spanning at over two and a half hours, the film needed a unique and creative hook to keep my attention on it. This film didn't really have that, and although, it was nicely shot, a lot of the film was run-of-the-mill narrative and ideas. The original ideas that made it worthwhile were outweighed by a lagging pace and a plethora of unneeded events that slowed it down. The film could have greatly benefited from a disciplined editor leaving fluff on the cutting room floor, but, even still, I can't escape that it's a ho-hum film altogether. I think the content is there for a good film, but this didn't do it for me.

This film won the Golden Globe for best drama and is a current nominee for Academy Award best picture. It's the story of a 5-year-old who became separated from his family and lost for 20 years. I don't like to go much into plot. Too much spoiler potential.
I see this film won the best cinematography award from the American Society of Cinematographers and my initial reaction to the film was being blown away by the beautiful images of India and Calcutta. The cinematography alone kept me riveted to the film's first half ( the second half that takes place in more ordinary urban surroundings is naturally less gorgeous than the fantastic footage in India.) "Lion" is also amazingly edited. I see the director worked in commercials and he must have cut the film himself because the editing is quite brilliant. The economical time constraints of commercials teach you a lot. This film should rightly take home the Oscars in those categories, but the steamroller for La La Land will probably deprive it of its just rewards. Great editing in the first half.
Again, I'm going to note this is a film in two halves: There is a leap of 20 years in the middle to encompass the young man's life story and, for me, the result is only half of a great film. I found the second half a disappointment following the bravura opening, which had me immediately thinking of the great tragedies of Indian film, like those of director Sajit Ray, but this film has its own sense of modernity and cuts its own path as a film -- and the first half is stunning as it depicts the little boy's sudden immersion into homelessness. It's touching, frightening and brilliantly done. The second half takes place in contemporary times in Australia and the little lost boy is now 30 years old. He's played by Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire -- a handsome young actor. Unfortunately, his acting is one of the weak points of the film. He's okay in some scenes, but unable to muster the emotions needed for the tear jerking finale. In fact, I think his inner conflict that comprises the second half brings the story to a disappointing crawl. Maybe there's no way it could compete with the "Oliver Twist" opening, but the script bogs down and melodrama wanders in for too long. The ending is suitably touching, however.
All in all, I'd give this film 3.5 out of 5 stars. I will I could give it four stars, but that second half slowdown really hurt the film in my eyes. But watch it for the brilliant first half and then try to ride it out to the finale.

The Last Picture Show (1971)

I really fell for this movie. I lived in a small country town, and this one really spoke truths about it. No secrets, detachment from suburbia, and "hustle and bustle," but always feeling like home, whatever your perception is regarding your upbringing, and experiences there. The direction, and writing is honest, and personal, and every performance left an impression on me. A new favorite, for sure.
Lion (2016)

This movie started off strong. You truly did feel for the main character when he's separated from his family. It's cleverly shown through the kid's perspective; you're never told what these threats to him are on his journey, only shown, which makes this trials all the more terrifying in the places he encounters, and the people he meets, especially when their intentions are left ambiguous.
The movie really slows down in the middle when he becomes an adult, it really seems like it's racing to get to the end to floor you with the resolution of the story, which would take a expert on failure to screw up. It doesn't disappoint, and it's hard not to be moved by the ending, but even then it's short lived, and you wish it wasn't over so quickly.
The acting is fine, although if you ask me it's a bitter overpraised. I've always liked Dev Patel since Slumdog Millionaire, but I feel like he's hardly ever given a chance to truly floor anyone with the material he's given, and this sadly is one of them. Kidman is good, but nowhere near close to her best, which I don't blame on her, it's more the script, and how much she's used, which is not a lot. She gets her "Oscar scene" in, but the lines are so hokey in it that even she couldn't convince me it was natural. The kid was doing the best job in this honestly, where's his nomination?
Overall, it's ok. Again, the beginning is solid. It's a nicely shot movie too, especially during the first part of the film. But, I can't get over the "by the numbers" second act, the rushed ending, and some of the painfully corny, sentimental scenes that are present throughout.

Hidden Figures - 2

I can't even begin to imagine why this was nominated for Best Picture. It wasn't terrible exactly but i can't think of a single thing about it that was above average. It had a very good cast, noone including Octavia Spencer whose nomination must have been to make up the numbers were impressive in any way though. My favourite was probably Mahershala Ali; only because i find the actor so likable tho he was barely in it and he's much better in Moonlight of course. Also dang, Jim Parsons has to start wearing a mask and wig if he wants me to see him as anyone but Sheldon Cooper. The racism elements weren't handled at all good or bad; they'd just show one of the black characters having to go to a Non-White bathroom or one taking a cup of coffee and the white people glaring at them for it. Followed by a completely unsubtle desegetating bathrooms scene later on. I thought it was kind of interesting having sexism wrapped up with the racism with even the black men thinking that a woman would be unable to do this, there was some potential there for something a bit different; it went absolutely nowhere though... meh. There was also quite a bit of forced, out of place humour usually accompanied with baffling music choices. I suppose this is an inspiring true story so i get why it was made, don't think it was close to award worthy though.
This is actually my least favourite film from last year so far. I know i will completely forget about this by the time the oscars come around, such a bland, uninteresting film.

This was my introduction to Ghanaian Cinema, a strange meshing of murder mystery/conspiracy and kung fu comedy. The murder mystery made this watchable enough, even if the acting was reminiscent of an old school B-movie. The kung fu stuff was there because the actor playing the "master" was Ghana's most popular actor and comedian, who uses the nick name "Lil Win". The film runs nearly 3 hours but compared to a few other shot-on-video African films that you can view on YouTube from free, this is actually a tolerable film. I ultimately would give it a C or a 2.5 out of 5

I only heard of this movie for the first time recently. On the surface, it's not a movie that would interest me, and I probably never would have watched it if it weren't for some good advice from TheUsualSuspect.
It's 1985 Dublin, and there's a new teenage boy in town. He has to deal with family issues and fitting in at a new school. He comes across a girl he likes, and to pull her in, he starts a band. As good as the movie started, I wondered if I was going to stay interested enough to be completely engrossed. Sure enough, the movie won me over. It's an upbeat movie about going for what you want. There are a slew of likable characters and it's a very endearing movie. It's an easy movie to like and I would recommend it to anyone.

http://max256.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/boomerang-1947.jpg?w=600
Boomerang! is a 1947 film noir from Elia Kazan, I actually didn't even notice this was a Kazan until I decided to write this up. This is a spectacular story, a priest is shot in the middle of a theater and the killer gets away. Weeks/months later a vagabond veteran is brought in and confesses to the crime. If you saw The Night Of this summer you know what you are getting into with this one.
The movie is methodical in how the case unfolds yet you still have a series of twists to the plot. Like 12 Angry Men the crime is broken down by our hero in a deliberate pace, but it then concludes with a pair of twists you would see in movies today not 80 years ago.
Much like with 12 Angry Men, Lee Cobb is in this, in a much more grounded performance as the weary police captain. Dana Andrews is the prosecutor and this is the first film I've seen with him where he stood out. This is a treasure of a movie, an early Kazan film that shows his early promise as a dynamic story teller. While the idealism feels a bit dated the film has a very clever way of dealing with it.

Indeed. I've spoken about it many times, and what makes it a personal favorite is the treatment of Seagal. It was only after I saw what happens to his character that I couldn't tear myself away. I would give it a 4 at least. It's probably my second favorite action movie after Die Hard.

Given what pretty much every other Seagal vehicle is like, I wonder how on Earth he ended up playing the role he did in Executive Decision. It's even pretty telling that the execution of that particular scene feels so clumsy that it's like he died halfway through production.

The Story of Mankind (1957)
https://forgottenfilmcast.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/the-story-of-mankind-5.png
A campy courtroom comedy / drama.
But it's the human race that is on trial with "Mr. Scratch" as the prosecutor and "The Spirit of Man" as the defense, while a heavenly tribunal sits in judgement trying to decide if mankind deserves to continue on since humanity apparently stumbled upon the prospect of total nuclear destruction far too early in their species' evolution.
Vincent Price shines as the devilishly accusatory Prince of Darkness while Ronald Colman magnanimously defends the virtues of man as the two travel the timeline of human history to examine an anthology of historical events to try to make their cases.
The nice thing is the film doesn't pull too many punches as Mr. Scratch has to point out the dark points in history and those that surrounded most every human achievement.
This film is one of those cameo showcases with lot of well-known & lesser known stars appearing as historical figures as the story of mankind is examined. The Marx Brothers make appearances as does Peter Lorre, but the most surprising is a very young Dennis Hopper as Napoleon (who is perfect in the role)!
A weak aspect is that the film uses a lot of stock footage to introduce various periods of history, and those stock clips are visually very identifiable as not looking like the rest of the film, giving a slightly cheap feel to an otherwise cohesive looking movie.
The movie feels like an early inspiration for (or cross between) History of the World Part 1 (1981) and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) but not aiming to be quite as silly or funny as either.
On a cult scale for an older, color film with a who's-who cast that is sometimes starkly serious, but mostly tongue-in-cheek (for fans of Vincent Price in movies of that era) I'd give it a 4.5.
For overall entertainment & watchability I'll give it a 2_5

Art School Confidential (2006)
2
What a disappointment. I'm a big fan of Ghost World, and Bad Santa, but this one fails to capture what made those great, instead on having a more in your face approach to it's cynicism. It tries to go for "alternative," and insightful, but comes off as irritating as the people they think they're poking fun at. The main character is boring, and the side characters are annoying caricatures. There's occasionally some good food for thought on approaching art, and it's artists, but it's so slimy, and too eager to point the finger that it's lost in it's attempt.

Manchester by the Sea (2016) 3
There's material enough for several movies. For so much trauma there should be more background story to fully realise impact. All major characters were unlikable, except Randi (Michelle Williams). Especially her conversation with Lee (Casey Affleck) hit hard emotionally and is one of highlights of 2016 cinema.

Editing and intertwining threads is ground for rewatchability factor. It's major flaw is that most characters were too detached and seemed to lack investment in the stakes, despite few tense and thrilling scenes in the beginning.

I've heard people say they thought this was a beautiful looking film but couldn't get into the narrative. That's pretty much how I felt. A teen boy encounters a hot chick in the park drinking beer one morning, and I thought I like where this is heading, but it just wasn't that kind of movie. It is beautiful animation, especially the scenes in the park.
House on the Edge of the Park (1980)
3.5-

With the director of Cannibal Holocaust, a couple of the stars from Cannibal Ferox, and the great David Hess of Last House on the Left fame, this movie is a smorgasbord of talent. I thought the story and actions of the characters lacked a little credibility, but otherwise this is high grade sadistic trash. I can't believe I didn't know of this movie before-thanks jiraffe!

It's alright. The higher rating is mostly because of Palance. Crystal is just not that funny.:nope:

Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino
Five out of Five Buckets of Popcorn
Excellent film that proved to me, above American Sniper and Sully, how good of a director Clint is even in his old age, and I liked both of those movies.
I'll just go with the last NEW one I saw..
Rogue one 8-9 out of 10.
Didn't think I would be a fan of a Jedi-less Skywalker-less (besides some Vader) Star Wars movie, but I was blown away. loved the integration with ep 4 enhancing a lot of lines that had no tangible meaning prior.

Watching these back to back may have been a poor choice.
Watched interstellar for the second time. I really like it, I'm really moved by it. I think Nolan's a master film maker and this is a masterful film. 4 and half out of 5.
Watched Arrival today after watching Interstellar the other night. I came into it with high expectations, the director had made
Prisoners and Sicario, which I rate highly. Arrival was just too slow for me. I didn't really get it in the end and I don't feel compelled and/or engaged enough to read reviews and prod through wikis. It raised some interesting ideas/concepts in regards to language and the way we think with our language (I did understand that) but overall it wasn't entertaining enough for those ideas to, well, entertain.
Interstellar is what I'm looking for in a movie. Number one it's entertainment coupled with an emotional connection to the characters and story and finally something educating and enlightening. I didn't feel a emotional connection to the characters in Arrival and as I said the pace was snail. It's not a movie I would watch again. The perfect balance of ideas and entertainment that was Interstellar was missing but given it's attempt to be more than pulp, to engage the synapses I can't give it less than a 3 out of 5.
To justify my rating further I feel we have been bombarded with dumb, poorly thought out films. We are in an age of quantity not quality. The purge election, The force awakens, comic book movies in general barring The Dark Knight trilogy (Nolan you master you ;) ), Transformers, you name it. We need movies that are smarter, this just hasn't hit the mark for me but I respect the intelligence but have lesser respect for the pace, characters, ambiguity and entertainment value on show.

I'm intrigued as to how you can at once find a film's ideas interesting and not immediately understandable yet not have that translate into an urge to actually go through the effort of finding answers simply because the film didn't make sufficiently entertaining use of those ideas. I got Arrival on a single viewing but would be interested in seeing how differently it plays out a second time - it doesn't strike me as being significantly less comprehensible than Interstellar, at least. I thought Interstellar suffered for its attempts to meld blockbuster sentimentality to hard sci-fi and only added to the bloat (and if we're going to complain about snail-like pacing, how long does it take them to even get to space? An hour?) That's without mentioning how its attempts at lofty ideas often gave way to bombastic set-pieces or predictable complications (which is why I often compare it against Danny Boyle's Sunshine, which follows many of the same narrative beats except without the Earth B-plot) It's at the point where I've seen the film twice and would still have to do research in order to properly critique it because I can barely think about what point/s that film was trying to make (I think it's some kind of metaphor for Nolan missing his family while making movies, but that raises further questions). I guess it's good that I'd have to think about what I'd say first, but I'd still consider it one of Nolan's weaker films even after respecting what intelligence it does show.
Anyway...
Split - 2
At least Shyamalan makes the interesting kind of 2 films.

Rogue One better than Arrival?
[Gritted Teeth]It would be boring if we all agreed, I guess[/Gritted Teeth]
The ratings are very subject to change but between those 2 yeah it surprised me too. Arrival actually was a disappointment for me as I was expecting to be completely blown away and I wasn't. Maybe the issue was my expectations of each film.

Great supernatural murder mystery with Faye Dunaway as a photographer that gets visions of murders. The suspects are an all-star cast of Brad Doriff, Tommy Lee Jones, and Raul Julia. It's one of the best apings of Dario Argento's work I've seen.

Manchester by the Sea (2016)
So glad I got round to seeing this. For me its up there with the best of 2016, probably top 3. Casey Affleck gives easily his best performance from what I've seen of him, so much so that he is so easy to identify with that you can feel the pain he's going through. I've never gone through the pain that he has but I can definitely see bits of myself in him. Despite complaints I've heard about the running time I thought it was paced really well and the time flew by.
I'm giving this a 4.5 now but can see it getting top marks in the future.

I thought I saw this movie before - so I didn't pay THAT much attention.. I think Fritz Lang made great German movies. When he came to the US, his movies were just pretty good. He did use his classic close-up face with eyes of horror (M, Mabuse)

Movie is really artificial and it made me cringe many times. It's too actiony for a war movie and all these brutal scenes were unnecessary cause I felt like I was watching pg-13 movie at the end. The way how characters were introduced was so cliche. Everything was forced. Forced exposition, forced violence. I didn't care about these characters cause I could see behind every scene (oh, so this is the scene were movie makers try to give depth to this character so audience will care and be sad when something bad happens with that person. Nice try). Yep, at the end it's just artificial. I would like Hacksaw Ridge if I was 16 again. I have seen too many movies like this one. Maybe not war movies, but movies who are delivered exactly this way and by exact same rules.

Arrival.
It was really interesting, I liked communication and language theory, but movie was so focused on its premise that it lacked interesting characters, they are just...there... it reminded me of Kubrick's Odyssey in that regard, gripping premise, great plot and no characters worth mentioning.

The Magnificent Seven
I know this follows in the footsteps of two iconic films, neither of which I have seen so my expectation was maybe not as high as others but I still felt it should be half decent based on the name alone, I also thought it would be doomed to fail, maybe it did, it was pretty standard fare but I found it mildly enjoyable, mostly the camaraderie between the seven, I'm also coming around to Chris Pratt who I used to dislike.. I thought he was okay here, I felt Peter Sarsgaard as the bad guy was a bit of a safe and easy casting choice, although he does it well I would've liked to see someone else in the role

Nagasaki : memories of my son (2015)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7b/Nagasaki_-_Memories_of_My_Son.png
It's A Movie by Yoji Yamada and japanese submission for 89th Oscar. Have some interesting moments, the like simple but quite wow atomic bomb scene, also some touchy moments as well
My problem that the son (kazunori ninomiya) turn to be really cringe and annoying on screen. I know he sorta played talk active brat~ghost, a true mommy boy, but still his acting/taking on character not feel delivered, eventho' he has certain improvements after the 2nd half because the script demand it too I suppose.
the dialog kinda odd(not the local dialect) as the detail in conversation become demanded and repetitive, in a truly rigid way . Feel too much(too much) exposition when talking explain themselves, otw, it ruin the timing of conversation or idk, I want to believe but I'm not sure quite cope with the language/sub
there scene, idk if it put unintentionally or I just ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) . Haru Kuroki's character look like been groped when they jostle on the train. I knew mr yoji yamada like to put few comedic situation in the background but still. Also at the ending credit when there anonymously everyone singing turn quite creepy lol
In the end this was another self contradict movie-hard to finish-Kinda mixed

They even found time for a bit of humor, pulling a guys pants down. Well, I had no idea what to expect. Didn't know anything about the film going in. Saw it rated highly on MoFo and gave it a try. At first, I thought it would just be a series of pissing contests. It turned out to be an interesting and fun to watch story. Nice to see the martial arts shown as a bit more grounded and brutal. All that flying and beauty in fighting is a bit magical for my tastes. I didn't want to stop watching. I chose the dubbed audio soundtrack, so that it wouldn't feel like a bunch of guys yelling, while I'd be reading. Very good experience. Not sure yet, if I want to watch the sequels.

There was nothing artificial about this film apart from the fact it was a film.. but even less so when it is based on a true story even down to minor details. I cared about every character, I'm sorry to break this to you but life is cliched, you have to live with it on film too but that wasn't even the case, look at the character of ghoul, absolutely never seen that character portrayed before
Visually fantastic err "action" scenes (it's war... on Okinawa) on a par with anything that's been done before, truly capturing the gross authenticity and chaos of battle
maybe at times you thought you were watching a pg-13 movie because of the innocence and goodness of Doss, I don't know maybe we should go back in history and change it so it can meet to your cinematic requirements of only being one thing
From Spider Man to Super Man.. Andrew Garfield is a revelation

Spot on. I thought that the original post was a bit "Look at me" but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
The great escape
I have 'seen' this film before, as in it has been on the TV when I have been present.
I dismissed it when I was younger as an 'old film' :D but it was on my list of films to watch that I have previously dismissed due to them being made before i was born.
I watched it again and although there was a lot that I didn't like about the film, there was so much that I did.
The characters and the cinematography were a joy and the story (based on true events) is one that is engaging and sincere.

RealHero's analysis is admittedly a little basic, though. Just saying something is forced or clichéd is easy without the elaboration. I do get where they're coming from with the "it was PG-13 by the end" comment for reasons that I went over in detail here (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1638355#post1638355) - it's not so much about the graphic nature as it was about how it effectively contradicts the point of the rest of the film and thus undermines the whole thing. Historical accuracy is one thing, but what the film chooses to show or not show (to say nothing of how it shows things) definitely makes a difference even in a film based on true events. Also, I don't even remember the character of Ghoul.

I loved the way they show us the mourning of the characters, in every movie that deals with this theme, people just looks sad and cry all the time, this one was different, they show the instability of the feelings! Great, great movie. Some useless side characters... but ok! I can live with that.

If you don't remember the character of ghoul, you were not paying enough attention, maybe you was already thinking of the review you would write, it was a subtle thing, no "forced cliched introduction" here, I'm thinking RealHero missed this too. In war movies you have to be switched on. That's not an insult, sometimes I am not switched on in movies, my mind is elsewhere, I wait until I know I'm in the right mind, I certainly don't watch a war movie in the middle of the afternoon, there's no other excuse for you not remembering this character, maybe it was just too chaotic for you.
you said "The vast majority of the sequence involving Hacksaw Ridge itself manages to make the combat more disturbing than "exciting" and the chaos is so overwhelming that it gets hard to tell who is "winning" or not because of how many people are getting brutally maimed or killed"
I'll repeat my earlier sentiments.. maybe we should go back and change history and the nature of war to suit your cinematic requirements so we can see who is... winning
I was excited.
As to the ending which you think doesn't fit in to the film is just befuddling, this film does not just show Doss the "conscienctious co-operater" it also shows the heroism of armed soldiers in war, which you admitted was brutal.. even at one point Doss is indirectly responsible for a Japanese soldiers death.. and devotes very little time at the end to the outcome of the war, it does not show the ridge being taken or the war being won, it shows soldiers giving cover fire as Doss comes down, the ending was correct within the whole theme of the film, I'm trying to be nice here but I don't expect you to meet me half way or anything

Hacksaw ridge
This could have been epic. But it wasn't. It was full of lazy romanticism, misty eyed war cliches and absolutely awful dialogue. It's such a shame because it truly is an incredible story. But when you hear:
"You gotta be kiddin' me"
"We gat company!"
"Let's go to work boys"
And other such tired dialogue it rather ruins it. The end battle sequence is also ridiculous and at times it was more of a "war gore" than a history epic - some seriously misjudged noise jump scares. Despite some nice photography it is a wasted opportunity 6/10

Or maybe I just don't remember. I saw the movie three months ago, after all. You could at least be specific about who Ghoul is rather than just saying "if you don't remember then you weren't paying attention". The Wikipedia plot synopsis doesn't even mention him. Maybe I'd remember if you elaborated on who he is and his importance to the story so I may remember the character even if I don't immediately recall his name. You don't have to be so condescending about it, either - this isn't a YouTube rant, it's a back-and-forth discussion.

Consider that the sentence about how "it's hard to tell who is winning" is supposed to reference how the film is deliberately causing directionless chaos to reflect the messiness of war - in effect complimenting the film. At that point in the film, both sides are still caught in a bloody stalemate. It was in the paragraph where I was actually talking up the film by saying it "did a pretty decent job" - I thought it was a choice that paid off considering the "war and violence are bad" points it was making for most of the movie. That's why I also thought that it "not being exciting" was a good thing - there's a common complaint about war movies where anti-war sentiments don't work because the war itself looks "exciting" to viewers, which directly contradicts the idea that war is an inherently horrible and traumatic thing. It's a difficult balance to get right, and my main problem with Hacksaw Ridge was that it was actually doing well at getting that balance right - up until the bit where the U.S. fights back against the Japanese and win (at least that's what is implied by the Japanese leaders committing suicide during the final assault - I doubt that they'd do that if they were winning the battle). The problem is that the rest of the film actually shows violence to be ugly and nasty even when the Americans are doing it to defend themselves, so for the film to suddenly start showing violence in a triumphant manner as the Americans take the ridge (and they do take the ridge) just feels...wrong. Like I said in that link, I know that's what happened in real life but the way they showed it in the film did not match to the point that the rest of the film was making.
Now, exactly how much of that is because you weren't paying attention or I wasn't making myself too clear is irrelevant now. Just try not to make things like this into a fight that you feel you have to win by proving that you are right and the other person is wrong, and at least try to acknowledge how and why people would think differently for reasons that don't involve blaming them for "not paying attention" or what-have-you.
Anyway...

I know the triumphant part you are talking about, even the music reflects it but it was in defense of Doss as much as anything else, I found it totally appropriate and not unbalanced.

The Theory of Everything
I have only just finished watching this. I know it won so many awards and accolades but a bit like with 'The Kings speech' I just wasn't all that interested in the subject of the film.
I knew Stephen Hawking's story after watching a documentary on him some time ago so (wrongly) thought that the film would offer me very little.
Unlike a documentary films invite us into the story, and that it exactly what I felt. Rather than watching a film about his life, I felt that I was within his life.
The story is obviously already written as it is a biographical film but the whole thing has to rise and fall on the performance of Redmayne and to a lesser extent Jones.
Redmayne was outstanding!!! I know he received the academy award (and most others) but I don't think I realised how good it was. I found it spellbinding. One of the top 3 representations of real people that I have ever seen in a film.
Jones was superb in her role but it was all about Redmayne.
The film itself was well shot and captured their relationship, their personalities and also the challenges that faced them.
The scene with Stephen receiving his diagnosis really hammered home how helpless the situation was at that time, and also that he was a brilliant mind, in the prime of his life and on the cusp of something special and then...
It also shows the strength of character and the value of perseverance.
A very good film.

Deepwater Horizon (2016)
Exactly the movie I expected, so I was not disappointed nor surprised...
The movie was pretty straight forward, not much if any character development, not much of a plot, and what was of that plot was explained very directly to the audience as it went along; preferably in a technical way, so it sounded cooler and smarter. But, you gotta love the simplified implicit explanation of how oil is drilled up, disguised inside a children's monolog about a school presentation. I couldn't help but laugh on the inside. And then there was Malkovich with his overly smart monologue not fitting his character at all - not even if he "had heard" it.
Peter Berg is a director I don't really flow with. I hated Lone Survivors, despite some great tense action, but all that heroic patrioism bullsh*t was so unbearable. I thought this wouldn't have any of that and it was looking decent most of the movie and then BAM! we get a semi-close-up on a worker with a 180 degree turn to upside tilt to reveal the image of a burning, exploding rig with an American flag placed perfectly in the center-front of the screen. Really? And then there is all the silly lines, poor dialogue and messy story for the sake of shaking the simplicity of the events up a bit.
Thankfully, though a Nolan lite version, Berg knows how to make mainstream entertainment. It is simple, sentimental, patriotic and overly emotionally distressed. Alas, Berg does bring a little more dark, raw and gritty edge to the bland scenery, which does give his movies a bit more than the competition. But all in all, there is nothing special to come for here. It's empty entertainment and while the oil explosions and all are fun and really well filmed at times, they get tiring and they begin to seem repetitive as we move along...

7/10 for me
Glad to hear you liked it, this has been a favorite since I was a little kid and would watch it every single time it was on TV.

https://mindreels.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/henry2.jpg
I give it 10 out of 10. It's so predictable, simple and ugly that it's actually brilliant. Henry is fully dedicated to his killing having his system avoiding cops to pinpoint the Modus Operandi. He changes murder weapons (revolver, bear hands, rope, wire etc.) He avoids to kill someone he knows. He keeps moving. He implicates why he kills to his "girlfriend" with whom he's trying to have a relationship. I like the camera work showing details of that all banged up car of his, showing the obscure colors, kind of darkness throughout the whole movie. I simply had to watch till the very end without getting bored. :)

Brubaker - 8/10
Very good movie. Some very good social commentary. There aren't enough bad people in the US to have a real fascist state, but when phony liberals co-operate constantly with "evil of two lesser" mentality (now all you have is evil, Hillary Clinton) then it's possible, unless you have in this movie, a Brubaker who is willing to go all the way, instead of how most do -- getting to the 50-yard line and dropping the ball.

This biopic is the story of ski jumper Eddie Edwards, an underdog British plasterer with a dream to go to the Olympics, without sponsorship, money, or support.
Storywise it's basically Cool Runnings. You know it -- All heart. No money or support. Shunned by Olympic brass and elite athletes as well. Disgraced ex-jumper grudgingly becomes his coach. His heart and guts win out over all.
Nothing about this movie should have been this good. We know the story all too well. Know where it's going. What surprised the hell out of me was how emotionally it impacted me, I was laughing, nervous as hell, rooting for this guy so much.
The sheer balls it took to know that any jump could be your last but I'm doing it anyway.
This guy had no equipment, support, weighed 20lbs heavier than any competitor, came in dead last, risked being thought a clown by the world and simply didn't care, he wanted to jump and was living his dream. Wow.
Yes, this movie took liberties for dramatic sake some, and is cliched but it doesn't matter.
When they say feel good movie, they mean it for this one.

Princess Monoke (Japan) 4 Have not seen this since it first came out and while I normally prefer sub, before I switched languages I hear Keith David's voice as the narrator and left it to find others like billy bob thorton, minnie driver and others and stuck with dub.
It was great to revisit an old hand painted animation and enjoyed seeing all the things that got me caught up in anime back in the day.
The Sub is a million times better, wrong choice. I've watched it in both more than once and while the dub is decent for a Ghibli one that still isn't saying much; it's trash in comparison.
Glad you liked it though

This is a grindhouse exploitation film in which 3 convicts escape a transport vehicle. They end up kidnapping a black teenage girl and going back to her house. From there, they abuse, humiliate, and racially torment the entire family. Vengeance awaits. This is very watchable if you're in to this sort of thing. It's got plenty of nastiness and cheese, but it was a little bit of a letdown when sweet revenge came.

I don't really have much to say about this one. It's a good biopic about inspiring subject matter with three great performances (especially Taraji P. Henson,) and that's probably what you were expecting anyways. There's a pretty anti climatic ending that I wish had more to do with the central characters than the big event surrounding the film itself, and some wasted performances, namely Mahershala Ali, but overall I had a good time with it.

It's not crazy over the top like most action movies, which I was grateful for. I still often felt like I was watching a dumb movie, and it's fairly convoluted. Really enjoyed it.
The depiction of the treatment that these ladies (and many others) endured because of the colour of their skin and gender. Obviously I was aware that this was the case before I watched this film, but it once again brought to life how different society was just a short time ago.
I enjoyed the film and was rooting for the main characters throughout.

The Princess Bride (1987) 3
The comedy in this film is hit or miss for me, most of the better comedy is towards the back half of the film as well most of the attempts at comedy towards the beginning didn't really hit for me. Its your basic cookie cutter fairy tale story filled with witty moments and some good comedic moments throughout. Nothing special in my opinion. I don't know if I've seen so many fantasy films since this one that have borrowed from this or if my expectations were too high. The acting also started our pretty stale to me but towards the end of the film it got much better.
I'm mostly familiar with Robin Wright from her work in House of Cards as Claire Underwood so seeing her in this role was strange but I bought her to an extent. Also gotta admit never seen Mandy Patinkin in anything outside his 3 season stint on Criminal Minds so I didn't even realize that was him at first playing Inigo Montoya, easily the best character in the film.

Well, what do you expect from a Tarantino movie titled "The Hateful Eight"?
I mentioned before how I see this as being reflective of QT himself so I'll go over some stuff I like: Sam Jackson continues to be the Olivier to Quentin's Shakespeare. Russell is endearing as the representation of an often blind white America, Roth, Goggins and Bichir are amusingly over the top, not sure why Madsen's there but, hey, Michael Madsen. Bruce Dern does wonderfully with mostly silent expression (he almost almost makes you feel bad for the guy) and Leigh, my god Leigh. Who did she loose the Oscar to? Telling, huh?
Oh, and poor O.B.

Waited too long with this. Awesome flick. Really good western, really competent horror. Loved how this movie also went against probably the most common horror trope and played out the horror in broad daylight. Kurt Russell was a bad ass and overall a great cast. What a debut feature from this guy. Excitng characters, well paced story and a grusome last act. I really enjoyed it. I'm unsure whether the slower pace will make it harder for this to work with revisits, but nevertheless, this first watch was a great time.

Good question. We've been in horror debates before, the biggest one was whether or not to classify The Sixth Sense (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1193949#post1193949) as horror or not (I'm in the YES column).
As for Tomahawk? The elements presented are horrific for sure. It's bloody and gross for sure. One of the most gruesome death scenes in recent cinema comes to my mind. I'd consider it horror, just maybe on the lighter side.

A funny beat poet suspects that his new wife is a killer.
So this is Mike Meyers all the way, and if you are a fan (yes), a must-see. His beat poetry, "Woman--- Whoa! Man!" is classic iconic comedy, as is his portrayal of hero Charlie's spastic Scottish dad. Lots of fun-- guaranteed laughs. My kids thoroughly enjoyed it, despite their belief that any film before 2012 cannot possibly be funny. Proved them wrong. Now they're running around the house reciting "Harriet".
4.5 Downed Pipers out of 5. Good comedy.

Dynamite Warrior - Dan Chupong stars as a mysterious Robin Hood-like warrior with Muay Thai skills and rockets who helps farmers by taking the cattle stolen from raiders. However, there is more to him as he hunts down the one who killed his parents years ago. Meanwhile, a nobleman who wants to market tractors decide to make trouble for the farmers by stealing their cattle for slaughter and he enlists the aid of a cannibalistic escaped convict and a black wizard. Awesome fights and stunts mixed in with the supernatural. Some VFX look crazy but overall a comic-bookish action adventure that's a fun ride!

The sequel cranks up the cheesiness to a just-tolerable level. The action is still there, although the plot isn't as interesting and it's severely lacking in character development. Every addition to the Lethal Weapon series is one worse than the last, maybe bar the third. This and the following two are heavy on the farce. Riggs and Murtaugh are like husband and wife in the way they communicate. And the lines have become cliche. Danny Glover should have patented the word "sh¡t". Joe Pesci co-stars for comic relief, though who needs him when you have the banter of Riggs and Murtaugh. Riggs especially needs a quaalude.

Goldfinger 8/10
Everything about this movie screams classic, specially in the Bond franchise. The intro is incredible and the story is solid, with enough twists and turns to keep the audience engaged. Being able to watch Sean Connery's smooth, cool and "dangerous" Bond fifty-three years later and understand why every single Bond after him was measured next to him is why I love movies.
Hell Or High Water - 3.5

This was very enjoyable. Wouldn't call it amazing but i had a good time watching it and that's all i was looking for. Bridges performance felt very familiar; particularly his voice, i've not seen True Grit (2010) in about 5 years so i can't remember if he spoke the same in that or if it was just the fact that it was basically a Sam Elliott impression. Even though i'd have him bottom of the other Best Supporting Actor nominees i've seen (Mahershala Ali and Lucas Hedges) i still thoroughly enjoyed him, it's tough not to. The script was probably my favourite part of the film, there was some funny bits and i liked the brothers interactions; their relationship was well done. The one sympathetic criminal partner and the other one who is just bad is a very common thing in movies/tv it seems, it worked here so it doesn't bother me. Weirdly i actually found Ben Foster more likeable because he was a giant unapologetic scumbag and he knew it, Pine was more whiny and him being more of a "good guy"; against deaths, etc, didn't sit right with me. Could have rated it a bit higher but there was a few lulls were i was pretty bored, mostly in the first half.

I just watched it too, Camo...Bridges was amazing and I wouldn't be totally shocked if he won a second Oscar.

Hell or High Water IS a good movie. I think I like Foster's character most of all and liked how it was more about the brothers than about the bank robbing.
And Raul, I liked Suicide Squad too. That's right, I said it!

A marine is moping because he got out of World War II due to hayfever, and feels that he failed. He meets some other marines, a story gets out of control, and all of a sudden he gets a hero's welcome at home. I read that this is a satire, not that I'd be able to spot one on my own. I'm not a big fan of satires normally, but this was a good movie in a lot of ways. It works as a drama, has good humor, and a pretty decent love angle. It's very sound but there was nothing about it that I loved.

I'm still luke warm on this one. It has all the ingredients for a great flick. Imaginative creations, great lead performance, interesting world, visionary director...but it still feels like it lacks that WOW factor. The two Hellboy movies should be movies I love, but they are movies I like.

Moonlight (2016) 4
"Moonlight" is my #5 movie of 2016 so far. Primarily because it's so immersive with it's slow style. Acting was engaging, cinematography- beautiful and I can find no faults with it.
Maggie's Plan (2015; wide release in 2016) 3.5
"Maggie's Plan" is feel good romance flick. I loved all characters and their interactions. This proves that a movie can be wonderful even without dark or depressing strains. When characters find themselves in messed up situations it never feels heavy or overwhelming and it gives a feeling life can be good throughout it's ups and downs.
The Handmaiden (2016) 3.5
I liked the style of this flick. It had good pace and provided different perspectives on the same storyline. Not to mention lots of twists. For me personally, some twists were surprising, others I could see coming a mile away. Way better than "The Wailing".
War Dogs (2016) 3
"War Dogs" was not a boring movie so it's worth a watch, but it had lots of problems. It started as comedy and ended as crime drama becoming neither. Too many character actions were irrational and their relationships had lack of definition thus making them somewhat unsatisfactory.
A Monster Calls (2016) 3.5
The movie starts off hitting all the right notes by fluently combining different aspects of boy Conor's (Lewis MacDougall) life in school, at home and his encounters with monster. His life is portrayed with lots of creativity and I was immersed in it. Though couple of monster stories fell a bit flat and the moral of the whole flick was too straight forward for my sensibilities. But acting was top notch and the movie has left an imprint on my psyche.
Doctor Strange (2016) 3.5
One of better Marvel releases and since it deals with supernatural it was more exceptional. Subject involved multi-dimensions, time relativity, spiritual layers ect. With so much happening it didn't feel messy and it was comprehensible. I enjoyed it a lot for the most part except when it came to paradoxical/ unsatisfying conclusion.
Shut In (2016) 1.5
Unimpressive thriller with underdeveloped characters and irrelevant deaths. The only positive to give life to it was Naomi Watts.

An elegantly understated, quiet, slow-moving but utterly captivating story of alienation and disconnectedness within a dysfunctional family. There's a very subtly implemented 'twist' which unravels the film's ever-present psychological undercurrent toward the end - well, at least, that's how I interpreted for myself what actually happened in the film.

It was about a banker and his sociopath girlfriend? I think? I will say this about the film Lisa has made my list of most hated movie characters of all time. I couldn't stand her throughout this film. None of the character motivations made much sense.
