mark f all one needs to do is leave you unguarded for a year, and you switch from Movie Tab II (the patrician zone) to Rate The Last Movie You Saw (the pleb zone). What's next, switching from art cinema to mindless Spielberg fun? Oh, wait...
Probably has something to do with the fact that the biggest (and almost certainly only) champion of Movie Tab II's "patrician" reputation decided to quit on it anyway only to come back and complain that nobody else ever held it to the same lofty reputation that he and only he ever did, much less the guy who was the best at unpretentiously posting in it.

It's certainly decent, I just thought it was all somewhat predictable and not always realistic. Fairly impressed with it being a feature-length debut from the director though so I'll be looking out for what they do next.

I was expecting Life is Beautiful I ended up getting Au revoir les enfants and I'm very happy about that. This is one of those films that walks that fine line of being a movie for all-ages but also a comedy. I didn't see the third act twist coming and the way they handled it I was impressed. You've got this great balance between these unknown child actors and known character actors and they all do a great job.

The Hunting Party (1971)
Someone could say there's a trend in my western choices of late. In other words, this one's yet another ultra-violent western following in the footsteps of The Wild Bunch and Soldier Blue. It's not as nihilistic as Peckinpah's work but it's bleaker in its tragedy.
Very good looking for an American western and solid cast (Candice Bergen sure picked herself some bloody films at the time). Hackman's sadistic millionaire reminds me of the Reverend from Brimstone (much more than Mitchum in The Night of the Hunter). Violence is quite brutal and the killer with his sniper rifle is almost horror-like, as inescapable as your average monster or a crazed serial killer. Definitely good film.

Campiness doesn't bother me I just didn't think it was funny. The premise isn't something I can get into (Tootsie is the exception) plus I have an issue, in general, with comedies from the 40's and 50's. Once they got to Florida it was a little better but that first hour was a drag.

Ugh, way to dark and stressful for a Disney family movie. Very little was touching or uplifting and the darker violent scenes were too scary for smaller kids. The little girl was one of the most annoying kids I've seen in a Disney movie. At least Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito were good and the big Dream World amusement park was done very well.

First re-watch since when it was first out (given my memory, that means first!). Decent story about a psychopathic revenge cuckoo with good all round performances (the husband is a bit wet but I suspect that's the idea). A beguiling Rebecca De Mornay does her best to look calculated and mad (and sexy!). It's a bit one paced and the "shocks" seem so tame now but still decent.

I guess there were 3 versions of this made. Someone mentioned a 90 min version, and how a 3hr 9m was released, but the version I saw was 2h 45m. There was stuff I liked, and times I zoned out, which is something I notice with many Russian movies. I can't describe it. It fascinates me, because it shows contrast to other countries. Maybe one day, I'd like to see the full version.
I notice they only capitalize the first letter of a title. Is this common in Eastern Europe?

I think the majority of languages spoken in Europe capitalize titles like that (English and Germany are the exceptions that immediately come to mind).

I watch this for the upcoming westerns list because it's on the current westerns list. Director Arthur Penn has made some great movies. This isn't one of them; I found it a little off as it's got an inconsistent tone. It does have Jack Nicholson and a very hammy Marlon Brando. Those two, especially when they share the screen, make the movie quite a bit of fun. Nice supporting cast including Harry Dean Stanton and Randy Quaid.

Back to the Future (comedy HOF) 3 1/2 *’s
Goodbye, Columbus (1969) 3 1/2
Freddy vs Jason 1 1/2
(Was in the mood for a horror film)
Streamers (1983) 3 1/2
Was torn on the rating on this one, as it was around a solid 3 stars but the last 30 mins are very intense and well acted (at times anyways)
Probably letting the last 30 mins influence the rating more then I should.
The Dark Valley (2014)
An Austrian western set somewhere in the Alps. Visually the film owes a lot to The Great Silence (not just the snowy mountain area but also the costumes). It's very beautifully shot (just a couple mishaps) revenge story that isn't original at all but does its job well enough (just like with cinematography there are few weak points in the script). Music choices were rather odd and didn't fit (I mean the actual songs, otherwise soundtrack was fine). An easy recommendation for the fans of serious spaghetti westerns (even though it's kraut western).

The Proposition (2005)
A meat pie western written by Nick Cave. It captures the heat and dirt so well that you can almost smell the sweat (or maybe I just have to change my shirt). It's bleak and brutal yet beautiful. Really great soundtrack too (mostly just variations of two songs). Maybe minor issues with pacing but as a whole very good.

Ruben Östlund - 2017

Saw it last night, I had it on my to-watch-list for some time now. I have to watch it again because this is not an easy movie to assimilate (I shouldn't even rate it), and part of my attempt to understand it, is writing about it. I could talk about the significance of every scene, the author wants you to see it, he doesn't wanna tell you, and that doesn't happen often nowadays. I'll talk about my favorite one, the human ape scene. I'll not even start with Terry Notary performance, is magnificent. Some of what I saw in the film Taxi Driver "all kings man cannot put it back together again" is in this scene, but the difference is the artistic level, is remarkable what Ruben did, remarkable. What if we forgot every convention, even language that allowed us to create myths, like money, just the pure instinct and basic emotions, no social hierarchies based on myths and conventions, this is the significance of this scene. What would be like to strip the "powerful" from the illusions of power they've created based on money, reputation, knowledge? I'm completely in love with this scene, is magnificent, first we saw there sarcasm, they thought he couldn't touch them because that's just a show in the territory they own, there sense of superiority so creased, and then, the silence, the respect, the understanding they're nothing stripped of there illusions in the world of primordial nature. This is something I've been contemplating for years, and now seeing it displayed so magnificently, is great, but than again, what we see in front of us is how we fell inside our head, maybe this is what I want to see, and I don't mind.

3022 (John Suits, 2019)
What would you do if you are on a 10-year mission in space and you find the Earth destroyed before your very eyes? The answer may lie in this film, which features Omar Epps as a mentally-stricken team leader who sees this happen and a fight for survival begins. And there are many twists and turns, which a bit of a shock in the film's 3rd act that explains a lot in terms of survival when some of his team goes missing after receiving a signal after the destruction of Earth.

Hydra (Kensuke Sonomura, 2019)
Sonomura, a veteran Japanese stuntmaster, makes his directorial debut on this film of Takashi, an assassin for the Tokyo Life Group who wants out of the game and makes a promise to protect an old friend's daughter while working at a local bar. When he discovers a notorious Yakuza underworld is set to be unleashed, he must go into action one more time when the girl he was asked to protect finds herself kidnapped. Some nice twists in the story, but the action is nothing short of amazing, mainly consisting of knife fights and close quarter combat that is fast and blistering. This is the kind of choreography that would make Scott Adkins (and any MA fan) proud to watch.

Animal Among Us (John Woodruff, 2019)
This is one horror meets psychological thriller whose title has a double meaning. The story revolves around a horror author and college professor who goes to the campground he wrote about, where 15 years ago a double murder took place apparently from sort of creature. There's much more to the story that it seems and that's the key to the film...the many twists and turns in the plot, all driven with excellent performances by Christian Oliver, Larisa Oleynik, and even UFC legend Don Frye. The film reminded me of various horror films of past but all wrapped up in one night shocking package.

Not a bad story of depression in a guy that wants to get his solidity back after losing his home wife and son. An accident leaves him with, what seems, a way out and also to redeem his own existence. Good performances, solid, unspectacular.

How can't I watch the movie now after your description.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Chapter One was mostly about the better parts of the book and it still managed to be only mediocre. Chapter Two was worse but not as much as I was afraid of. Again I don't like the changes to the book and it also suffers from the regular King issue; all of his adults are annoying (it's not exactly King's issue though but the world's, I'm afraid) and less time the kids have the worse the story gets. Also some of the CGI was terribly bad.

One of those movies that makes you wonder why it was decided to make a movie from the novel of the same name. Alicia Vikander is adorable & made & carried the movie for me. Only interesting concept was the movie was set in Japan & Vikander convincingly spoke Japanese. If the movie were set in America or England, it would be a massive yawn as there’s not much to it.

The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful (Lee Khan, 2019)
A sequel to the 2014 Korean film about a Go player's quest for revenge has a new story about a young boy who lost it all when his father bet everything in a game of Go. After years of training, the boy grows up to seek revenge against those who wronged him but a mysterious wanderer also appears in his own mission of vengeance. Pretty good film that combines action and game playing with a tinge of comedy like its original. Some small flaws here and there but overall a pretty good sequel.

Undercover Brother 2 (Leslie Small, 2019)
No one asked for this sequel...and it was not needed. Sad because I've always liked Michael Jai White. However, he only appears mainly in the opening and end action sequences. The rest of the film has him occasionally appearing in a Obi-Wan state to the character of Lionel, played by Vince Swann. Swann tries to make to work but the script is just terrible. Stick with Black Dynamite and the original Undercover Brother instead. This one is "Not Solid".

At least it was original. Lately, I've been "listening" to the last handful of movies.
Redeemer (2014)
A martial arts film from Chile. Amateurish and childish (kinda a mix of John Wick, Netflix's Marvel series and some rip-off jokes from Kick-Ass that didn't fit at all). Pretty much the only good thing in the film is Marko Zaror who does quite a decent job in the fight scenes but sadly can't save them from terrible choreography.

Pale Rider (1985)
Somehow these Eastwood westerns feel like pale imitations of Leone. They lack the atmosphere of good spaghetti and are way too much about Clint putting himself on a pedestal. Again, it's not bad but extremely mediocre. Also isn't that beginning sequence really a rip-off of Conan the Barbarian?

Quite crappy 13-in-a-dozen horror. Why even try to go for a twist when it's so predictable? Initial setting is fine but the film goes awry quite soon. And the last scene is totally pointless. I'm feeling generous so...

Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
My favorite movie style is classic noir, and this is a good one. In fact the story could have been written by Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett.
Set in L.A. of the late 1940s, a black man (Denzel) is hired to spot a white woman (Jennifer Beals) who frequents nightclubs in the black community. She is also the fiancee of a mayoral candidate, which leads to plenty of intrigue, crime, interaction with crooked cops and just plain crooks.
There are excellent supporting performances by Tom Sizemore, and also Don Cheadle.
A must-see for noir fans.

A Spanish crime thriller set in 1980. Two cops from Madrid are sent to rural south to investigate the disappearance of two teenage girls. There are political undertones but the film doesn't overdo them (e.g. the cops are fully capable of working together despite the other having a past in Franco's Armed Police). It's a very beautifully shot film (especially the aerial shots are magnificent). Good script, great acting and technically solid. Very good "Spanish Noir".

Doctor Sleep is a good movie horribly botched you see how the twins are scary from the Shining but Doctor Sleep's twins are just these weird photogenic replacements. The movie is 2 and a half hours long..so three hours with trailers and ad's and it just has no horror or suspense. The film just jumps from one plot point to the other telling these three big stories and paying homage to The Shining. I'm sure King loved it but I found it frustrating and annoying.
Tombstone (1993)
I remembered liking this and wanted to rewatch it for the coming western countdown. I don't know what's happened between these viewings but now the writing felt corny, acting stiff and I hated the action montages. Doc Holliday was still great though and so were the mustaches.

His first 6 movies must be one of my favorite 6 movie stretches of any director: Hard Times, The Driver, The Warriors, The Long Riders, Southern Comfort, and 48 Hours. Not talking great cinematic art here, just great guy movies. Cool casting idea with this movie with sets of brothers playing sets of brothers. It was a very good watch.

Solid film. Quick little movie to knock off for the Western countdown. A couple of mercenaries go to Mexico during a rebellion and end up escorting a woman to Vera Cruz...along with about 3 million in gold bullion.

Norman (2016)
(Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer)
This is an absorbing film with elements of both mystery and tragedy. Norman (Richard Gere) is presented as a "fixer"-- really a wannabe facilitator, name dropper and noodge who continuously tries to ingratiate himself into matters of high level Jewish-Israeli business and politics. We don't learn much about Norman other than he is mostly a phony whose obsession is to be involved with powerful people.
I was never a big fan of Gere's, but his portrayal is so good in this role that it might be considered his crowning achievement. There are powerful performances in the film by cast members Lior Ashkenazi, Michael Sheen, and Steve Buscemi.
The story line is occasionally confusing, and some of the background is left to the imagination. But the picture keeps one glued to a drama that promotes wonder at how it will all end.

The British do a real fine job with troubled youth films and this was no exception. This one felt like it went on forever but it was still very good. A little more charisma from a character or two would have helped. Sometimes, for some reason, when I watch a DVD, the subtitle option is on. Usually I just turn it off but this time I left it on and I definitely needed them. I think I had this on my watchlist due to a Chypmunk post.

Glengarry Glen Ross is an intense emotional roller coaster of passionate salesman on stage, put on screen.
The film dives into some of the pressures and obstacles salesman face on a daily basis on a simple stage with an A list cast.
Overall, one of my favorite films I’ve seen this year. ★★★★

Dark City
A film before it’s time. The ideas, conspiracy, background and web that entangles this film are what make it great, but are also the cause of its horrible box office intake. The movie was too heavy for its time and collapsed under its own weight.
“When was the last time you remember doing something during the day”?
This film is so complex I’m not even going to attempt to describe it other than:
If inception, memento, 23, Manchurian candidate, Bourne identity, the Truman show, the matrix and quite a few others all gang banged a girl named the city of lost children, you would get dark city as the baby.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - 2019
Finally dug my teeth into this one. Leo and Pitt where great as I expected with QT. The end was as nuts as I was told. Definitely made me think after, but that might just be because I didn't know much about Manson. Like I didn't know he wasn't the one killing people it was his "family". The last hour of the flick after QT was done exploring Leo's and Pitt's characters the movie become pretty strong, like a normal QT flick. The first half had some funny parts and I get he had to build it up and I was engaged. However it sort of dragged unlike QT films in the past to me. Just not much of intrigue happen during the first part honestly. It's a fine effort I might revisit down the line, but for QT's bar I think he didn't hit it.
Oh and also what was the problem with the Bruce Lee part? I know their family was all pissy about it. I don't know much about Bruce, but who really cares, it was just a tiny part that probably exaggerated him. It was like 15 minutes tops, who cares. It was just trying to show how badass Pitt's character could be, which is needed later in the film.
Anyways I give it a weak 3 out of 5. Probably more of a 2.5. Worth a watch, but not his strongest effort to me.

Quentin Tarantino, 2019
2.5
I saw the poster, I saw the cast, I saw the trailer and I understood right away that this would probably be a movie I would not like. I didn't. I'm not really much of a lover of westerns, unless it's Sergio Leone's, and my film knowledge of the 50's and 60's in America is very limited because I don't like the politeness, the cleanness most of those films have, I've never saw Gone With the Wind, or... so many others. I think I understood the point of the film, a view of Hollywood, and it's funny, because, this is a Hollywood movie staring two of the greatest names in the industry, one using a flame thrower to incinerate a living person, the other smashing a women's head "until you couldn't tell it was a head no moh" (https://tinyurl.com/v6uz3uw) *. That's exactly the point that they were making all along, this industry can make people do anything, no matter who you are. We had the ultra violence for the fan boys, very poorly made in my opinion, and Tarantino's foots fetish, great.

I'm pretty sure I've already rated this movie before, but it's always being displayed on television, and I like it. They say this is a action, adventure drama, for me it's a terror movie. I don't get frightened with most horror movies I've seen, but this one does that. I've been scared of wolves most of my life, or all my life, since I can think of, increased when I discover the mythology behind them. I remember I just wanted them to banish from the face of the earth, but then I started to read about them, and they're a magnificent creature, I still fear them, like hell, but I'm so mad to hear that farmers are killing Iberian wolves because they hunt there sheep's, they're so ignorant, but I understand what they might be felling. Concerning the movie, it's man versus nature, man going into the dark, the stage is the Alaskan wilderness, good pictures there, I think it's a good survival film, very tense, not as many action as expected, which is good, it's filled with masculinity, different personalities faced with an impending painful death, depressing really, you understand that there is no hope there, they're grateful to have survived a plain crash, questioning if there is fate, an higher power, God. In the most difficult time of there lives there stronghold is the remembrance of there most beautiful times, what they would like to see again, what they would still want to do. What I don't like, but I understand, is the incorrect depict of wolves behavior, still, there is scenes very accurate that I liked very much to see.

I did not like this film at all. Loads of style. Loads of cool camera shots and crane operated photography. Loads of great film posters and homages throughout. But that's it. I thought Pitt was weak. Di Caprio was ok. But there is a distinct lack of mystery and original plot brilliance that Tarantino had in his early films. It even lacks the charm, wit and fun of Inglorious Basterds. People were talking about the tense ranch scene....I didn't feel tense at all, it just felt long and lacklustre. One of the weakest films I've seen this year.

11-25-19, 08:06 AM
I wouldn't give it such a low rating, I don't intend to shock those who liked the film. The soundtrack is fine, I liked the songs, Di Caprio is okay, I'm not sure why Brad Pitt accepted to do that role, I'm not even sure how both accepted to do those roles, I guess that's the point I was trying to make, Hollywood. I can understand why some would like this film, it's just not my ball park. I wouldn't rate it as low because I think Tarantino managed to bring everything to the time/place he intended it to be, the movie point is not as bad, I just think it was badly unfolded/told.

11-25-19, 08:24 AM
Tarantino is becoming a walking clichê, he should really just quit at the 10th film. I like most of his films, one I do love, Pulp Fiction. He tried to bring nostalgia, those dog canned food, the outfits, the movie posters, the movie theaters and some common patterns with Kill Bill, I just don’t enjoy that when it’s so intentional.
ScarletLion
11-25-19, 08:42 AM
I quite like the Kill Bill films. There's alot going on in them. But this one and The Hateful 8 just feel like self indulgent projects and Tarantino seems have a bout 2 or 3 really good ideas, builds the film around them but doesn't focus on the rest of it. It makes the movie rather dull. The first hour of Once upon a time in Hollywood is incredibly monotonous.

This was a very interesting documentary about the most influential ideologue in Brazil in this generation. I don't know if it is available in other languages (I watched it on amazon prime but the Brazilian selection is different). This guy is hardcore rightwing of the likes Latin American politics had never seen before and now he is the main ideological influence on my country's government. A truly radical change.

The 24 Hour War (2016)
For those of you interested in racing, this is an excellent documentary outlining the intense competition between Ford and Ferrari in the 1960s. The current movie Ford v Ferrari is evidently a dramatization of that competition from the year 1966 at Le Mans. This film is a good companion to FvF similar to the way Citizenfour was to Snowden.
The 24 Hour War presents the facts and background on these two racing giants, and is able to build suspense by the simple telling of the story via narration and interviews of the big names of the day: Mario Andretti, AJ Foyt, Peter Miles, Henry Ford II, Piero Ferrari, Carol Shelby, and many others. It includes almost all original footage from the era, as well as recent interviews.
This is a very watchable and fascinating 90 minutes.
Doc's rating: 7/10
Hell or High Water.
Definitely voting for it on the countdown.

I recommend the film Serras da Desordem from 2006. Another good recent film is Chuva É Cantoria Na Aldeia Dos Mortos. What the Portuguese failed to achieve in 1500 in now being done by Bolsonaro, ethnic genocide.

You are not Brazilian, are you? I would advise people to be less irrational regarding these things.
Bolsonaro has developed a terrible international reputation and for no practical reason. My theory is that this comes from his incapacity to behave as a well-mannered member of the international elite since he is from a low brown background and the fact that the Brazilian elites who control the media vehicles that control everything foreigners see regarding Brazil hate the guy a lot since he is not an establishment figure.
Looking from an objective viewpoint of policies implemented his government has been a bit clumsy but still is working better than any previous government we had in the past 20 years actually. Of course, the elites have a deep desire that the government collapses and try to feed on that narrative.

Jesus é foda, próximo treinador do Porto.
No, I'm from Portugal. I do not speak of Bolsonaro, I speak of Brazil, is more important than any politician, and part of the respect that should exist, is respecting the tradition and the greatest respect is respecting the blood. Bolsonaro sucks, wants to wipe out the natives, "reintegrate them into society," that is, to strip them of their culture, as Americans did to the natives, simply because they want the Amazonia at all costs, wants to do what the Portuguese did in 1500, we were more subtle, he's dumb enough to burn Amazonia in front of everyone to depopulate and sell the wood, but the wealth of Amazonia is beyond what that ignorant can understand, it is so large that the vast majority has not even been discovered, a territory the size of India has not yet been discovered, part of the mythology about it, is accentuated in that fact, one of the problems of deforesting it is that, in that land nothing grows. Bolsonaro is just crap like Trump, his speech appeals to the poor and appeals to the rich because it controls the poor, the poor, those who live in Rio de Janeiro's favelas next to mansions, who eat the garbage that the mansions throw away. In the midst of the colossal confusion that is the social landscape in Brazil, the natives still managed to escape in those jungles, it makes me sad, upset that he wants to drag them into the confusion. Good thing a Portuguese managed to make those people happy a few days ago. Jesus is awesome, Porto's next coach.

The animation wasn't bad, the music was good, and I liked that they showed some of Morticia's and Gomez's past, but the movie was only 1 1/2 hours, most of the jokes bombed and there wasn't much of a story.

Peckinpah's bleak crime thriller is encumbered by the lack of proper story and uninteresting characters. First half is too slow but the characters still make some sense. The second half amps up the action but somehow loses the characters. Also could someone please explain why this is considered a western?

A very good, solid film. Technically impressive with three strong performances, Joe Pesci the standout.
Through being so overtly self-reflective, the film left me wanting more. Instead of feeling a myriad of emotions it felt too cold and clear, relationships seemed very clearly defined, the characters do not change or develop significantly enough to justify time spent with them. For a film so long the story and message both seemed extremely simple. Not to say that is a problem, or that it wasn't very enjoyable.
Scorsese largely forgoes mise-en-scene in favour of usual montage and music to tie together different time periods. Whilst ageing effects and sheer amount of scenes help signify the scope of the story, they don’t feel as rich narratively as the do purely informative. Lots of exposition and story that felt more like a documentary/biopic of the guy.

On the current westerns list, but I'd be surprised if it makes the new one. There's a shocking scene of violence early in the movie which is the only thing I'll remember it for. The ending and the performances are decent with Burt Lancaster playing the lead. I didn't like the score and it's not much to look at. Story and dialogue are nothing special. Average at best.

This was kind of a cool premise. Everyone in the world didn't know who the Beatles were except one person after an event. So he went on to record them and become a big star well because the Beatles were awesome. It was a neat movie but I think it fell short of fully being realized. For some reason they crammed a weird love story into the movie as the main plot instead of the cool premise the Beatles were forgotten. The love story just didn't work for me it all, felt forced and unearned. I thought for a second they were going show corporate music industry to ruin the Beatles songs, but quickly abandoned it. At moments the movie was quite fun, and it's worth a gander I suppose but feels like a squandered chance at a really cool movie. The movie should have focused on other idea instead of the lame love story to me.

Atomic Blonde (2017)
I wish I hadn't learned that this wasn't a comedy. A mix of Guy Ritchie, John Wick, and James Bond that misses the charms of every one of these. Apparently having a female lead is enough and no characters are needed. Action looked quite bad (please, either go over-the-top or stick to realism but don't make pseudo-realistic fights where a slender woman is overpowering much bigger men).

You all know I'm not very good with my wording when I try my best to summarize my thoughts on a piece of spectacular or even bad cinema (my mentioning of that word alone, ugh… it's enough to trigger my OCD and send me into a frenzy *backspace backspace backspace*). And I know what I'm going to say next is going to sound incredibly cliche, but Martin Scorsese's newest and probably last Gangster outing (almost an Unforgiven-esc eulogy for the genre) is probably the most profound and impactful picture of the year.
You go through about 30 years of one man's life, a horrible man who's committed horrible things, and despite being 3 hours and 30 minutes of unremorseful violence and death, it goes by like a breeze which a lot of that you can chalk up to Scorsese's perfect direction (that old slugger just never quits being awesome) that brings absolute life to a desolate somber tale (with of course, thanks to that sharp script, which never has a single scene that feels pointless). It also helps that the film's lead, an aged Robert De Niro digitally de-aged to look younger, astounded and exceeded my expectations by giving probably his best performance since Taxi Driver. But it's during the film's last hour where it turns into a somber, meditative, almost poetic piece that delivers the humanity of it's real life crime characters stripped down and head-on. I don't want to spoil much, but I honestly felt like I was going to throw up, it got that tense. And what it all amounts to... is nothing. Not even living your life like a schmuck. Just loneliness, cold loneliness. It's sad, but maybe that's fine. How else was this going to end up?
It's a hell of a thing killing a man, and it's not easy being a gangster either. This isn't "Goodfellas", this is a tragedy. The Irishman is an absolute must-see, and I don't use that term lightly.

The Irishman (2019)
This is a first rate production in nearly all aspects. It's chief detraction is the feeling of familiarity with the character types. There have been enough outstanding pictures where each of the main actors have played memorable Italian/Sicilian mob figures, that the tendency is to mistake the characters as cookie cutter versions of earlier dramas. The fact that neither Hoffa nor Sheeran were Italian can be lost on the audience, despite the film's title.
It would be helpful to viewers to first familiarize themselves with the Hoffa/Teamsters/mob events of the 1960s. I grew up with the Hoffa saga, and there simply was not a larger nor more familiar personality in the news, week in and week out. His press attention, his loud mouth, and his insistence on re-establishing his Teamsters authority resulted in his murder.
The tone and pace of the film were absorbing. Scorsese took Steven Zaillian's screenplay (from the book by Charles Brandt) and allowed ample time for the characters to develop their relationships-- a pleasing change from today's split second, short attention span action flicks. The cinematography by Rodgrigo Prieto --a veteran of films by Innaritu, Stone, and Scorsese-- captivated the viewers with perfect framing and lighting.
The heavyweight cast was a delight to watch: not only the 3 principals (DeNiro, Pacino and Pesci, along with Harvey Keitel), but a superb supporting cast including Bobby Cannavale, Ray Romano, and Stephen Graham.
Much was made of the "de-aging" of the principals. It was a detraction, more so in portraying their very early years. But from the time they were middle aged and older, the make up and styling were very effective. Granted, the scene where a 76 year old DeNiro thrashed a younger heavier shopkeeper looked fakey. However it didn't change the meaning of the action.
The period music was fitting, and helped establish the feel of the era. "In the Still of the Night", the doo-wop hit by The Five Satins was one of the best period specific songs, and is one of the all time slow dancing make-out songs. There were other memorable hits from the era, such as "I Hear You Knocking", "A White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation", and "Cry", to name a few.
One gets the feeling that this will be Scorsese's last "mob" type picture, and if so it's a strong and fitting way to exit the style.

A possession horror that kinda tries to follow the recipe of The Exorcist III (i.e. mixing the demons with police investigation). Sadly the script is rather horrible; it's as basic and cliched as possible and has pretty severe pacing issues. I wanted to like it but just couldn't. Major disappointment considering the director's previous film was Sinister.

The reason that this is one of my favorite holiday short films is that I had the book as a child back in 19 71. It was always a nice read. when I got older, Jim Henson created the Christmas short film after the book. Its always had some good songs as well. They were written by John Denver. I never listened to his music except when my parents had it on the radio. Its just a downright cute movie.

The Irishman (2019)
4.5
https://ksqd.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/The-Film-Gang-The-Irishman-screenshot.jpg
I wasn't expecting another Goodfellas but it is sort of like a geriatric Goodfellas with everyone older and slower. That includes Scorsese, whose best movies usually hit you like a bolt of lightening. This one is much more methodical, and there's a point where the tension lasts longer than some film's entire runtime.
I also wasn't expecting another great performance from De Niro or especially Pesci, but they both came through. Even Pacino, who I thought started a bit slow, made a huge mark. The whole supporting cast was excellent, although I could have used more Keitel. Only thing is that I'm sick of seeing the face of Jesse Plemons.
Technically the movie is superb. That's to be expected but it shouldn't be taken for granted. Nobody beats Scorsese when it comes to showcasing an era, and that's crucial for a movie like this. I guess there's a lot of talk about the de-aging that was used. I really didn't see a problem and thought everyone looked great. I did think Pacino looked a little odd but then maybe there was an effort to have him look a little more like Hoffa? I will say that at times De Niro seemed too old for the character, but I also think any small issues were worth it in order to get the band back together.
You have to wonder if this was a swan song of sorts for the director and some of the cast, and with the way the movie plays out there's a parallel. I'm probably biased towards the director and cast but I thought it lived up to the hype.

First Blood was one of the few movies I had on DVD while I was a kid, and I saw it countless times, every scene was made to be remembered, you don't get often. I've also seen the others of the franchise more than once, so, I knew I had to keep an open mind, a great plot and acting was something I couldn't expect. We have to situate ourselves, in 1982, when the first movie came out, people didn't want the same as they want today, so, a different movie had to be made this time, and that explains the graphic violence. It's pure pornographic violence, and I can like that as well, entertainment sake. You could tell what the story would be just from watching the trailer alone, and there's nothing wrong with that, I accept and agree with it, it's not that important, the story, I wouldn't accept if they made it with right and left turns, it seems those are the movies the popcorn audiences, the mainstream, say are epic movies, "the best movies ever made", sadly. The Mexicans only looked Mexicans because we could see Mexico, they didn't made the audience hate them enough for the death they had, and the drama, poor quality, still, pleasant surprise to see Adriana Barraza in this movie, made it bearable, actress in movies like Amores Perros and Babel, what I didn't understood during the beginning of the film was the representation of the characters ages, I didn't knew exactly how they were related. Bring a classic, add the biggest cliché you could find with ordinary violence. That's it.

Wow...I honestly could not have said it any better than this. I don't even think I could have said this at all. Thank you for capturing the Irishman in such a poignant and accurate way. I too loved every second of this film.
EDIT: Now I wish you posted more often... :P

Luc Besson, 2014

Luc Besson, author of one of my favorite movies of all time, Leon, brings us an failed attempt to make something elaborate. With Scarlett Johansson that tried to show us a blank character, stripped of urges, an emotional wall, super evolved human being, but it just showed vanity, displaying her super powers around. Bring Morgan Freeman to be a narrator, to get a certain intelligence to the point they were trying to make. The point? What it would be like if the human brain reached maximum capacity, they concluded it would be like having a satori. It's great to see Min-sik Choi in this, made it bearable, having a fine actor in the movie. A miss cast of the main actress, or, I'm trying to make this film more than it should be.

Breach (2007)
Directed by Billy Ray, and starring Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe, and Laura Linney, this biographical double-agent spy thriller gets most of its oomph from the tension created by a young wannabe FBI agent who is tasked with getting incriminating evidence against his boss-- a veteran G-man who has been selling secrets to the Soviet Union.
This comparatively low budget project, although well received, suffers from the lack of a strong co-lead to work against the venerable Chris Cooper. Phillippe is a medium weight actor who plays the young agent not entirely convincingly. The problem is compounded by the story focusing too much attention on Phillippe's character.
Although liberties are taken with the details of the actual case, Cooper is able to carry the load. The story of real life double agent Robert Hanssen is interesting enough. My guess is that a screen play which focused on different aspects of the story would have produced a finer film.
So it's a very watchable film which would have benefitted from a heftier co-lead.

I like his attitude and that he is a movie fan, has seen a lot of different movies, has a great knowledge, seems very passionate about it, very old school type of movie geek, listens to a lot of different music's as well. I discovered him very recently cinematographic speaking, I knew his band, I didn't knew he made movies as well. I haven't seen enough movies of the genera to even have an constructive opinion, but I liked one of his movies, and I fond the last one entertaining, but I think he shouldn't have done it if that was the end he had planing. The Halloween's were something it was brought to him, he didn't had that freedom.

Judex (1963, Georges Franju)
4
Georges Franju's lovely tribute to Louis Feuillade, 'Judex' boasts a whole array of elements harking back to silent cinema aesthetic and the spy detective genre, sprinkled with a dash of adventure and mystery. Masks and unmaskings, femme fatales, rooftop fights, conjuring tricks, an enigmatic Fantomas-like (though far less superheroic) main protagonist - this movie is definitely a fun ride! Loved the black and white cinematography (the Criterion blu looks great), and Maurice Jarre's score is just perfect in adding to the mysterious, dreamy atmosphere.
Overall, not without its flaws but I simply couldn't resist its quirky charm. Thumbs up!

Last night I watched Overlord (2018), because I heard quite a few great things about it, specifically being a great B movie, but sadly that was not the case. The film uses every cliche in the book when crafting the characters of the story and none of it comes across as a re-imagination of the director's vision or something unique enough for me to remember. Every person in the story is a one dimensional block of wood that I have seen done far better in almost every other war film and it confuses me why the director decided to go for that. Why not make the characters unlike all the other WW2 soldier characters we've seen before? It would be a subtle way of showing that the timeline the story takes place in is not our own. Throw a black woman in the squad, because why not? The story's unimaginative anyway and throwing that character in would convey an idea of "oh, so the story's not meant to be accurate to the time period". But it doesn't really matter because even if the people in the story were interesting the film would still be pretty weak.
It's a more half baked version of the Wolfenstein video games and ya know what? I would rather play the video games than sit down and watch a film where other people kill super solider Nazi's in the most uninteresting ways possible. The movie was so unmemorable that I can not recall a single thing about the film that surprised or even entertained me. I do not recommend this film.
3/10
Note: I know that technically black men weren't allowed to serve in World War 2, so the addition of a black woman doesn't really work for the reasons I am giving it, (sorry if you took offense to my thoughtless comment, because I didn't mean for it to come across that way) but at least the addition would make the film a little bit more diverse. How many times do we have to see the same ****ing male characters in these war films when the movie is supposed to be a stupid B movie? Like Jesus christ. They are so boring. Even the black man acts like every scaredy cat war boy we have seen in cinema's history. Have the characters do some overacting, add a Hawksian woman, do something that hasn't been done in a while. My god the first 40 minutes of the movie are written and cut like they are from the most generic History Channel mini-series about World War 2.
Huh...who was the black woman in Overlord?
You had a black guy in Overlord because it's a Cloverfield/Fringe film that's dealing with alternate histories and that's how they tell the stories

Daniel Isn't Real (Adam Egypt Mortimer, 2019)
I was quite surprised by the story, which can be played as a demented and twisted version of Drop Dead Fred. The story of a man who reconnects with his childhood imaginary friend takes a very dark twist and it is driven by the performance of Patrick Schwarzenegger as the titular Daniel. It is clear he has no intention of being an action star like his pops and he doesn't need to...not after this film.

For the most part, it's beautiful to look at but I don't find its attempt at the philosophy that interesting. It's almost like the story (the journey and sparse discussions) is just an excuse to put the images on film. The audio was terrible and (perhaps partly because of that) the acting wasn't too good either. Guess I'll have to be an iconoclast again.

Inuk filmmaker and activists battle the E.U. ban and multi-million campaigns against their cultural rights to sell seal skin and skin-based products to literally keep Inuits alive.

Saw this in theaters and gave it a 3, but I kept thinking about certain pieces and wanting to see this again. It's a shocking movie that I love telling people about, and it's just as eerie and tense the second time. Upping the rating

Good, really good but I'm not sure if I loved it. Definitely a film that needs more viewings to fully digest. Mad Taxi Driver vibes.

Richard Gere, New York city homeless for ten years with dementia looking for someone. Beautifully filmed this movie, stationary camera, behind city objects, like if only the city were watching a homeless and no one else, gives you the impression of New York city like most movies don't, and it's hard to film NY, the city became a cliche, it's immensely photogenic. The author respected the time, this means the movie is slow. There is not evident plot, everything appears as we go, the point is to show events, or the lack of them, that is the life of a homeless. A very indie kind of film, the character is not romanticized in any way, nothing is romanticized, a very noncommercial movie, maybe that's why they had so many delays and setbacks, having Richard Gere in such a film I believe would not be easy. Anyway, this was considered a failure by the critics, I believe this is one of those movie I'd like to see more often, where the directors do what they want, not what we want them to do, I like that, that's why I re-watched it last night. Only one person recognized Richard Gere while he was begging for money, that's New York, and I wouldn't change it, that's it's beauty and I believe Oren's made a great job showing some of that.

After hearing a little about Uncut Gems I decided to look up the directors previous films. This was available to stream so I checked it out and it's pretty solid. First time seeing Robert Pattinson in anything and he was really good.

Man, this film is all over the place. If you’ve ever seen a Bunuel film, you’ll understand what I mean.
Still, the dream within dreams and constant spectre of death Permeates this film. It’s actually really good. Won’t go into it much as it’s without a doubt one of those films you must see for yourself!

The Adventures of Captain Fabien - A fairly good drama starring Errol Flynn and the ever watchable Vincent Price. 2.5
Halfway House - An enjoyable enough ghost drama starring Mervyn Johns. 3

It’s amazing the more I think back to it.
The Godfather (1972)
After failing to finish The Irishman I had to ensure that a long mob epic can still be good. It's not perfect (I kinda dislike both Brando and Pacino here; too much time is spent at weddings, funerals, and baptisms; Sonny beating his brother-in-law is almost as bad as de Niro beating the shopkeeper) but surely one of the best mafia films.

Noi Albinoi left me basking in the impact of it's final scene long after the movie credits ran out. It gave me similar vibes to Lilya 4-ever and Show Me Love. I loved it.
