I watched the South Korean movie The Host. Fairly interesting way they tackled the monster and the story.
I had a hard time appreciating few cultural nuances, but overall enjoyed the movie.

Just saw Hostiles a fairly new 'hardcore' Western that I don't think a lot of mofos have seen. It has beautiful cinematography, great action sequences and also some flaws for me. But still definitely one to watch before sending in your Western ballot.

Sangre Eterna (2002)
(aka Eternal Blood)

A vampire film from Chile. There's a bunch of college kids who listen to gothic music and play vampire role-playing games (for the large part the film reminds me of some Christian propaganda video about the dangers of satanic RPGs). Soon one of them sees vampires in real life too. For the most part, it seems that this stupid mess at least has a clear direction but, of course, they have to ruin even that at the end. Really not worth seeing unless you just need to see everything that has vampires.

Robert Eggers, 2015 & 2019
4 X 2

Robert Eggers is one of the greatest young directors of our time, I can only hope for his Nosferatu. I personally have a strong cultural connection with his films. I believe the major characteristics of his work are the use mythology, folk tales, not only that, but most importantly how he magnificently convoys those to the time/place he wants, the preparation and study must have an extraordinary scrutiny. The cultural connection: I'm Portuguese and Portugal was founded by the holy church and the templar knights, so, we have a forever lasting relationship with them; witchcraft, folk tales and oceans mythology is pretty much our DNA, they're the bases for our greatest literary works. We are farmers, shepherds and fisherman's, Robert made a picture of both ways of living in a way I couldn't even imagine.

After Hours

An anti-Taxi Driver of sorts, along with that film’s many knockoffs? Instead of any semblance of the lionization Travis experiences in his respective film’s climax, Paul Hackett, after a long night of hounding women for sex, finally walks up to one at a bar and asks to sit down and just talk, and be listened to.

Was the punishment proportionate to the crime? I wouldn’t say so, but the lesson was learned. What’s a Scorsese film without a little Catholicism?

Blast of Silence 1961 Directed by Allen Baron
60109
Low budget, raw, gritty and bad ass looking 60's Noir film with a hard hitting Jazz score and a very unique sounding inner monologue voice over (the voice from the Thriller video came to mind).
We follow the main character a cold lone wolf hit-man; Frankie Bono played by Allen Baron, (who looks like a fusion of young De Niro and George C. Scott), as he prepares for a hit in downtown New York.
This film is no joke, it's the darkest 'noirest' Noir I've seen so far.
(Really need a colorful/happy movie after this one :p.)

Speaking of good movies you'll never watch again The Hunt is joining the list. This may be Mads finest performance. It's about a decent guy falsely accused of being a pedophile and how his friends and the town turn on him. So many things go through your head while watching this but all I wanted was for One Eye to make an appearance and clear things up. Very good movie.

A silly, good looking R and R flick. Quite a bit of this is "It's a movie - just go with it." A few of the scenes are too long. especially the ending but it had one pretty cool scene involving glass ("Glass? Who the hell cares about glass?" - J.M). Pretty solid gore.

Ford v. Ferrari (2019)

It’s difficult to come up with something fresh for an auto racing film. There have been both good ones and poor ones in the past, so the challenge for the production is to captivate and excite the viewer without falling prey to the familiarity of a standard racing film. Ford v. Ferrari almost succeeds.

It’s a true life American success story that portrays the challenge of Henry Ford II to build a Le Mans Prototype race car to overcome Ferrari’s dominance in the Le Mans field, and to become the first U.S. automobile company to do so in that format. There's rarely a surprise conclusion in this type of story, but we'll avoid the spoilers.

There's plenty of excitement in the racing scenes, but most of the competitiveness comes early, and surprisingly between Mr. Ford and Mr. Ferrari rather than from the racing drivers. In fact much of the racing footage could have been from solo time trials. There was little head to head battling. Still the racing filmed from the point of view of the driver was exciting.

The human elements of the story bordered on triteness. Some of the human interaction was obviously exaggerated in a rather hackneyed manner. The writing and portrayal of Ford's racing chairman, Leo Beebe bordered on caricature.

But most of the acting was well done, with Christian Bale being the chief standout. He was able to present nearly a full range, and convincingly so. Matt Damon on the other hand seemed to be playing Matt Damon. Mostly a mail-in part for him.

The writers took some liberties with the actual story, but in the main it was historically close. In my view a better film of the subject was the documentary The 24 Hour War by Nate Adams and Adam Carolla. That film is more exciting and suspenseful, while using real footage and real interviews of the principals.

Ford v. Ferrari is a watchable film with exciting scenes and with good acting by Bale. It's a trifle long, but mostly enjoyable.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

I watched this yesterday but still don't know exactly how to rate it. There's lots of good in it (especially the drama between Jojo, his mother, and Elsa, but also some of the comedic stuff), but lots of the satire is weak and too blatantly underlining (apparently this has still made some people butthurt about not being clear enough in its "nazis are evil" message so I don't know). So, at times I loved it but moments later I could be embarrassed about the school play level of writing. Oh, and Taika was terrible as Adolf.

Sorgenfri (2015)
aka What We Become

A Danish zombie film that owes a lot to early Romero (especially Night of the Living Dead and The Grazies) but adds in some modern The Walking Dead vibes as well. It doesn't bring anything new to the genre and doesn't really build its characters as well as Romero. On the other hand, it's not as preachingly political either. Kind of OK but still on the weak side. If you're absolutely nuts about zombies then you should check this out.

Watched it but still have no idea what it's about other than journalists in a jungle investigating somebody related to Jonestown. Okay, but what is Willie Aames, in his Mickey Mouse t-shirt, doing there? Well, Willie is the draw and if it wasn't for Willie I wouldn't have watched it. Boy, he is spectacular in this one when they let him do his thing. Oof! I have a feeling once it was finished filming they cut 90% of his scenes. He can not act at all. It's a sight to behold. Deodato directed movie but it's no Cannibal Holocaust. Light on gore, a little of this and that, the native woman was very pretty and Michael Berryman, in a stretch role, plays a weird looking dude with a machete. Not a very good/bad movie.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya 2013 ‘かぐや姫の物語’ Directed by Isao Takahata

(Voices: Chloë Grace Moretz, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, John Cho)

The watercolor and charcoal style is gorgeous, artfully done and stunning.
You can screenshot every five minutes and create several 'hang on the wall worthy' art pieces for your house.
Accompanied by perfectly fitting and enchanting Japanese Koto melodies.

The run time and the pacing however totally diminish the allure and magic of the animation after a while. It's also extremely sweet, cute and pink, like eating cotton candy for 2 hours and 17 minutes straight.
The story is a familiar, mystical Princess tale with a morally sound conclusion. It just takes too long to get there, could have easily been told through a 8-12 minute short film.
Overall it was not the Spirited Away experience I was hoping for and expecting beforehand.

I agree. And I was wondering if it was because I have odd taste in movies but I see other people on Letterboxd feeling the same way, too.

I've also noticed it's often from people who generally know what they're doing. I'm feeling more from directorial debuts and sophomore efforts.

I've been pondering if it's some combination of these:

1. Scheduling now being a high premium than ever before? (Guess....I don't know).

and perhaps:

2. We as audiences have now seen SO many movies (and other productions of quality) that we have seen and seen and seen nearly every combination of plot twist and character development and humor and especially "emotional impact moments" that we're subconsciously looking for more and more.

The option #2 above really intrigues me in slightly other ways too. For instance, I felt that the only thing "wrong" with Unbreakable was that it followed on the heels of The Sixth Sense, and people set an oddly misplaced bar to reach; I had personally noticed a lot of disappointment with the film. Had Unbreakable appeared first, it would have perhaps not been heralded as stellar, but would have been far better received. I loved the film.

I loved Unbreakable, too. I think I'd go for option 2. We kind of have seen pretty much everything. Personally, I find myself more easily flirted with by directors who know how to deliver a proper 80s trashy throwback, because it rekindles a feeling, a sort of...thrill. And I love a properly done psychedelic movie because damn...beautiful stuff (like Mandy).

I don' t know much about scheduling, so I can't really comment on that.

Btw has anyone else noticed Elijah Wood lending his hand to producing some good stuff lately? He's on the production credits to Mandy, which surprised me. I quite like Color Out of Space, which wasn't the best Lovecraftian thing I've ever seen but I did enjoy it (it featured the more classic freak-out Cage). My favourite Cage to date is Mandy. I didn't quite like it as much as the first time, in a bar in the early 90's with similar morons and losers, but I still liked it. It's not what I normally look for in a western as it's mostly a comedy. Jane Fonda is good, and more importantly she looks good, but this movie belongs to Lee Marvin. He plays two roles and is an absolute riot. I also liked the musical interludes with Nat King Cole.

The Lawnmower Man (1992)

Before the Matrix there was another movie that explored the nature of reality and the depths of truth in regards to our perception of reality. None of this is new, this is what the alchemists of the ancient world already knew, but was lost and forgotten. If we could only embrace wisdom instead of ignorance, this technology would free the mind of man.

The best film James Mangold directed so far.
I remember watching a random interview with Christian Bale during the Batman years, he said he is a racing fan. Seeing him in this movie made me happy because of that. John Ford, 1955

One of my John Ford's personal favorites, don't see a reason for rating this one. One of the most beautiful crafted pieces, thoughts in the history of cinema about lost and death, actually, this was the film that made me take a second look at that period.

Decided to re-watch this film to contemplate the magnitude, greatness of what was done in the mid/late 50's, a truly great period, and to compare it with the pitches, this constant statements for effect that are made today; thinking about the last night oscars here, is really overwhelming sometimes, sad really, not in terms of personal taste, more in terms of creativity and originality and... personal space, intimacy.

I think it lacks depth, didn't convey emotion effectively, it was certainly appreciated since it has no soundtrack, which can be a good thing, actually can be a statement of the filmmaker, his ability of expression without resorting to other sensorial distractions. More backstory could fill the gaps, a photo album and children's stories weren't enough, for me at least, which I don't consider to be absolutely necessary as well, more backstory, in the right hand I mean. Very strong title, conjugated with being French, in the hands of someone else could be something phenomenal, masterpiece actually, more poetic at least.

I know it's not a popular opinion. Just saw it last night actually, fresh in my mind. It's one of those I don't see changing in the future, but lets see. I see the point, that's already a problem, I don't think cinema should be made to be understandable, more like a author gift to us, I agree with the point, I just think it was badly transmitted, and since it's a strong subject, that's my rating.

Perhaps my judgment is based on the current scenario that we are facing in Portugal. We have a ratio of one of the most elderly populations in the world, just behind Japan, I think, and this (the story of the film) is becoming something very common, which is also very common is violence against women, something that the authorities are unable to stop. Therefore, our news on TV are practically just "Man kills women in ...". We came from a very religious stigma, very old testament like, trivial mindset. To make such a film, it must not be a mere representation of an event, and I think this film was just that, and that is not a bad thing, it is maybe a vision that many people have not yet thought of.

This is a pretty good slasher pic. The body count isn't insanely high nor is it very gory but it's different and pretty well done even if the twist is obvious from a mile away.

This is a Spaghetti Western. A woman's husband is hung in front of her by some greedy dudes looking to take over their land. So she hires a gunfighter to get some revenge. The revenge scheme is a little different than we usually get which is kind of what makes a routine story a bit more interesting. Some nice cinematography in this one.

Sean Penn plays this like he thinks he's a Batman villain whether miscasting or misdirecting...who knows?!

Risible stuff.

Emerald Run (Eric Etebari, 2020)
rating_3_5
A husband and father, reeling from the loss of his best friend and his daughter's health scare, takes a task for his father-in-law that ultimately becomes a journey of self-discovery and faith. A good indie meshing of Faith-based film and desert heist film with an ensemble cast with Witchblade co-stars David Chokachi and Yancy Butler as the main protagonist and his religious wife along with Chris Mulkey, Michael Pare, Steven Williams, and Vernon Wells in pivotal supporting roles. The director, Eric Etebari, also appeared in a major role on Witchblade during its 2000-2002 run and made the most of his budget and had a jaw-dropping twist at the end.

This is the 3rd film I've seen from indie director and actor Harley Wallen and the one thing I love about his films is his constant use of twists that keep the viewer intrigued and this film, about a malevolent spirit that has arrived via a seance and makes life hell for a couple and their friends, this one is quite good with its slow tension and scares until the final 15 minutes just unleashes the terror.

Early outing for Jack Reynor as a narcissistic young man between school and university in an affluent area of Dublin. Things start going wrong when he falls for the GF of one of his rugby chums and get's intensely jealous/suspicious of their on-going relationship.

Sub-titles deffo required for this low-budget offering based on a true story. Well acted but misses a really strong 3rd act and fiffles out somewhat.

I'm glad for the westerns countdown and Miss Vicky because otherwise I was never interested in this. I know Kevin Costner directed a bomb with The Postman, but he should have directed more than 3 movies because he's got a good touch. Him and Robert Duvall are excellent in the lead roles, and there's a nice supporting cast including Annette Bening. There's a prolonged shootout at the end that's one of the best I've ever seen. This was a nice surprise and it's a legit contender for my westerns list.

This movie has flaws, but it still f***s with my head so much. The premise is pretty mind-opening, and the movie does a good job of carrying into other aspects of the world they introduce. I watched this on DVD, and the music score was noticeably different than the version in theaters. I read that they intentionally changed it to reduce the 'synth' sounds, but I actually find it disappointing they decided on this modification....

A weird one. Not sure I like it but I can appreciate the effort. Two girls on the run from the law go to their old, psycho, childhood friends mansion to hide out/rob her but while there they are forced to play the nutso's favorite childhood game - some kind of Mommy/ Doctor/ Sick Child thing (who doesn't remember that one?). It's pretty bizarre. The ending - not a fan. Kind of gruesome w/o being gory (there's a bit of splatter but no REAL graphic stuff). Some interesting stuff here just missing a little flow.

Knives Out (2019)

During a rather lackluster Holiday season of film releases we were treated to a good old fashioned whodunit murder mystery ala Agatha Christie. Written and directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, Breaking Bad), the setting is in a 19th Century Massachusetts mansion, where it’s patriarch and popular novelist owner is murdered on his 85th birthday, following a birthday party attended by his entire family and staff.

The ensemble cast includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Ana de Armas, and Christopher Plummer, who all turn in memorable performances. Of special note is Daniel Craig (007) as a famous Poirot-like detective who plays against type with a creditable southern plantation accent; and Chris Evans (Captain America) as a caddish playboy.

Films of this type can veer into either farce or incoherent complexity, but in this case the picture stays on track and holds one’s interest for its entire 130 minute run time. The story is both inventive and light hearted while avoiding triteness. It’s abundanat twists and turns are believable: a Charlie Chan/Sherlock Holmes mystery wrapped up in a very pleasing PG-13 production.

It’s surprising that this solid little film had only one Oscar nomination: Best Original Screenplay, which it certainly deserved. Looking back, Knives Out was surely as good as most of the pictures who were nominated. It received high praise from both critics and audiences, often being placed in the year’s 10 best. If you like whodunits, this is a good one to see.

Doc’s rating: 8/10

Not a great western but it's entertaining thank to the two leads who seem to be having a bit of fun with this. Kirk, aka Handsome Harry, is a former bank robber accused of murdering the Sheriff and has holed up in the towns hotel with a hostage. James, aka Sam Sterrit, is a former lawman brought in to get him out - dead or alive. The two have some history with each other and neither is who they used to be. It's kind of silly but a lot of fun.

Almost perfect first hour! It was really looking like this was going to be one of my favorite Westerns. Sadly the last couple of scenes were somewhat lackluster for me.

For me it took awhile to believe Newman's character, one of his strangest roles. Richard Boone was chilling as the sadistic bad guy-- one of the best in films IMO.

I've always broken Coen Brothers into two categories:

1. Classic Coen Quirky (it's own category IMO)
2. Coen Brothers perhaps trying to make more standard films, but not quite getting there.

In my experience, people either "get"/love the first category right away, or they never do. Arizona, Hudsucker Proxy and Oh Brother are perfect examples...kinda sad. The world wouldn't be right without their films. The quotes from these movies will live forever.

I just watched Jumanji the next level. Fairly enjoyable movie, without it being special.

I appreciate the fact they made an actual effort to introduce interesting characters in Devito and Glover. And the change in Kevin Hart's character (won't reveal what it was) was smart, largely because Hart did great with that character.

They have already shown what the next part will be about.

Harley Quinn:Birds of Prey, it's a big step up from Suicide Squad in that the movie is okay borderline good but if you've seen the trailer you basically saw the film. It's a little sad when the hyena has more charisma than half the "team". The strength of the film is it borrows heavily from John Wick all the action scenes are great...though a bit slower.

Margot Robbie is very good in this, it feels like a Quinn solo film and it's strongest and funniest when they go down that route. Ewan McGregor is a great villain and we have one good running gag with Huntress but at the end of the day it's a three star movie.

Color Out of Space (2019)

It's been too long since I last read Lovecraft's stories but I'm pretty sure Color Out of Space has never been a favorite of mine yet it's (I think) adapted to film more often than any other of his works. Despite interesting director, Nicolas Cage and producers of Mandy had kept my expectations rather low. The end result is too much like Yuzna & Gordon's collaborations from the 80s. Visually it's properly alien but also very cheap looking. I hope the next film is going to be a bit more serious and less over the top.

English title is Let the Corpses Tan. I'm usually a fan of Canal+ stuff but this was an extreme case of style over substance. Some dudes steal some gold bullion and are hiding out at the home of an artist. Cops show up, there's some shooting, some double and triple crossing, etc. It's a mess with a lot of artsy fartsy camera work, fx, blood splatter and really vivid colors all set against a deserty backdrop, so it looks good but it's boring.

Been meaning to watch this since I found the first Jumanji reboot to be surprisingly entertaining and I was not disappointed the second time around. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart shine above everyone else through the little twist added to the movie at the beginning. Dwayne Johnson has used his charisma from his wrestling days to really make a name for himself in hollywood and it shows once again in this film.

Woodsman (2004). Never saw a movie like this before. Kevin Bacon risked a great deal taking this role portraying a child molester. The stars did their jobs well in that they depicted flawed people interacting with other flawed people. But I find the subject matter (deviant behavior) is incredibly revolting.

Short and sweet, I watched this because it's on the current westerns list. I thought it had a very noirish feel to it and it features excellent performances from Sterling Hayden and Nedrick Young. I'm pretty sure it's the first western I've seen that features a whale harpoon as a weapon. There's a perfect copy on YouTube.

I can't rate this one. It may sound sci-fi but it's not. Okay, a few astronauts travel from Earth to another Earth Like planet where the inhabitants stopped evolving in the 12 or 13th century. They're stuck in the dark ages. The movie follows Don Rumata and he is the astronaut considered a God. He is there to help them move forward, get out of their middle ages rut but he can't alter their history or politics... at all. This all revealed in the first 5 minutes in voice over. The next 2 hours and 55 minutes is...haven't got a clue. This is without a doubt the strangest movie I've ever seen. It doesn't have a traditional (or any) plot to follow. The camera just kind of wanders around this dreary, muddy town where the folks are constantly breaking the fourth wall (sometimes just looks and sometimes talking to us) which just adds to the overall weirdness. Most of the shots are close ups yet there is a ton of stuff going on in each frame. Things dropping in frame, stuff happening off the shoulders of the guy in close up, etc. There's dialogue that gets spoken out of the blue that doesn't make any sense. Maybe lost in translation? Apparently there is some kind of war against intellectuals so if you show any signs of wanting to be educated you ain't long for this world. It's a 3 hour, Russian, b&w movie and I have no idea what it's about but it can't be bad or I would have drug up long before it finished yet I don't think I liked it either. The only thing I know for certain is the filmmaking/technical aspects of this are pretty amazing.

Not really a Giallo i think but this is a pretty decent film. Exploitation more but a bit deeper and quite unnerving. The storyline beats the acting but there are genuine shocks and the atmosphere is kept taught. Liked this and may have to look at others in the genre.

Ad Astra (2019)

Having heard some negativity about this film, it was pleasantly surprising how absorbing this production was. The first half especially was impressive in its freshness and intrigue. The film periodically borrowed from 2001: A Space Odyssey, but then most space films have.

The story went a little off the rails in the second half, although it's tricky to pinpoint why. Each individual scene worked very well as produced, but the overall premise of the picture seemed too far-fetched for the stated time setting of "the near future". Having astronauts able to ply the far reaches of Neptune and the limits of our solar system wouldn't seem achievable until centuries into the future.

The performances were first rate, and it occurred to me while observing Brad Pitt's portrayal that he is a much better actor to whom I'd previously given credit. His character is reserved, subtle and nuanced, and always feels genuine. Tommy Lee Jones too is first rate in a performance that is more introspective than his usual roles. He has comparatively little screen time, but he makes the most of it.

The picture's special effects and cinematography are top of the line, which one might expect in this type of production. And once the premise is accepted, most of the action is impressive: the Moon chase sequences, the attacks within a biomedical research station, and the rings of Neptune are all memorable.

The PG-13 rating was appreciated. The film avoided the unnecessary trappings of R-rated triteness. This may be a "space opera", but it is solidly earth bound (in contrast to Star Wars and the like). So the draw of Earth as being home are never ignored, and is able to set up a gratifying ending.

This is my favorite of director/writer James Gray's pictures. Had I realized his previous film was The Lost City of Z, it would have caused me even more reluctance to see Ad Astra. But I'm a sucker for happy endings, and it appears as though Gray has the same predilection. We'll be looking forward to his next picture.

The Art Of Self Defense

Well I thought that was rather surprisingly brilliant and very clever, in equal measure hilarious and bloody dark, wasn't sure how much was going to like at the end simply because I was finding it was a bit cold with the humour and the darkness and just didn't know where it was heading or saying but it was nicely done with an injection of heart at the end and a kind of summary that I greatly appreciated... some parts remind me of The Lobster.. not sure Ive liked something so much with Jesse Eisenberg, he was great in this, perfect for the role.. Imogen Poots was good too

Pretty good western about Buck (Poitier), a former Union soldier who helps former slaves navigate their way westward. When a bunch of Confederate raiders loot one of the caravans under his watch he feels obligated to right the wrong. Along the way he meets the Preacher (Belafonte) and the two form an unlikely team who seek a bit of Frontier Justice. Belafonte kind of steals the show and is really good as the Preacher. At first I didn't like him much (had nothing to do with his baked beans teeth and constant grinning) but as you get to know him and his story he really is a great character. Enjoyed this quite a bit.

Finally decided to watch this after seeing it on so many people's "best" lists, and I'll say it was underwhelming. I can't find anything wrong with the film, it was just rather unremarkable in every way I look at it. The characters are enjoyable, but there weren't any particular moments or scenes that I expect to call memorable.

Midsommar, 5/10

Well-directed but ultimately boring, predictable, and pointless. I did not feel as if there were any strong, fleshed-out characters nor did I get the sense that there was a vision or a strong storyline.

It just went from one weird/gruesome scene to the next, and expects viewers to be satisfied with just that. Once you've seen enough films, that kind of stuff just doesn't move you anymore.

Interesting thriller about an obsessive man who wants to completely control a girl he had a passionate tryst with. Initially it seems like fear of abandonment but this guy has serious issues and is not scared of exploiting his "prize" physically and sexually. Reminded me alot of the book "The Collector" by John Fowles (I have never seen the film). Its shot very well and effectively and both actors in the main roles are excellent (bl00dy h£ll, Teresa Palmer don't half remind me of Kirtsen Stewart!!!).

I watched this because it's directed by John Ford and it has a good cast. It's a historical western that I believe has some truth behind it, and it's certainly a moving and important story. It's a very well made film, but it is 2 and 1/2 hours long and it didn't exactly keep me glued to the screen and it won't stick in my memory.

Aimless adaptation of Peter Careys novel. Some decent parts but overall it doesn't stand together. The editing seems rushed and there seems a few aspects put in to sensationalize the story. No arguments wit the main actors but really underwhelming.

or

(etc.)

A rating of 2.5 looks like this: rating_2_5

If the 0 to 5 rating is a 0 to 10, then nominally a 5/10 should be the same as a 2.5/5, no?

But I think the ratings are actually more of how we were graded in school. F/D/C/B/A, with F at 1 star.

For whatever reason this classic was not one of the Disney flicks were the extended family would pile into the family truckster and head off to the drive in to watch on one of it's re-releases. Therefore I had never seen it before and now I know why. While it may be a family friendly movie I'm pretty sure that within the first 30 minutes all the kids would've been going haywire at the playground and not watching the movie. I think it's good, not great, but am fairly certain that a 5 y/o Hey Fred isn't going to sit still for this one (at least not when there's a jungle gym and swings sitting atop some nice sharp gravel nearby). Favorite part was the chimney sweep number. That was good. One of the classic movies I can check off as finally having seen.

Yeah, further: If people score a 7/10, they might be thinking of a paper in school graded at 70%. But mathematically (using the rating tag), that turns into a 3.5 (rating_3_5) which really looks like B territory to me.

Probably for the best, since this is by definition a subjective endeavor after all.

I don't wing it at all.

I don't think Citizen Rules was saying that you're in any way random or haphazard with your ratings, if that's how you took it.

For instance, you rated this movie, this way:

It Came from Another World! (Christopher R. Mihm, 2007) rating_2- 5/10

But a 5 out of 10 is flunking if we use the metaphor of grades, and conversely, mathematically a 5 out of 10 would look like this:rating_2_5.

So there's a method behind it that might be hard to pin down since the rating_2 you gave doesn't fit into either category(?)

Nothing at all wrong with that! I'm just wondering aloud about how folks do it.

Overview of my rating system. I've used a 1-10 scale since I was 17 - 47 years ago. I've adapted it to the MoFo system.

5 9.5/10 or 10/10 A+
4.5 8.5/10 or 9/10 A
4 8/10 A-
3.5+ 7.5/10 B+
3.5 7/10 B
3 6.5/10 B-
2.5 5.5/10 C or 6/10 C+
2 5/10 C-
1.5+ 4.5/10 D+
1.5 4/10 D
1+ 3.5/10 D-
1 3/10 F+
0.5 2/10 F
0 1/10 F-

Since I rate few movies at the extreme high or low ends of my scale, I'm not as concerned with differentiating all those ratings, but in the middle ground, I think it's more helpful - at least to those who get something out of my ratings. Since I had my stroke, it's difficult for me to type longer posts.

Except not everyone is graded in school like that :D

In Finland elementary through high school is traditionally rated from 4 to 10 (though in these odd times the elementary school is moving away from ratings altogether because you can't have anyone doing better or worse than someone else). Vocational school and the university have been using a 0 to 5 scale.

This isn't, exactly, the last film I watched, but, most interestingly, I recently watched Parasite. I have been an avid fan of South Korean cinema for many years now and I am happy to see a Korean film receive attention on a global-scale. That said, I also thoroughly enjoyed the film. I found it had a lot of layers, an attention to detail that, in some ways, reminds me of Jordan Peele (in modern years, I mean), and I found it had a very timely, approach story-line. I also believe it's a film that could be a proper "gateway" to South Korean cinema for some because of how novel the concept is and how approachable the characters feel. Sometimes the best South Korean movies I have seen are difficult to recommend to a casual moviegoer. I wouldn't recommend I Saw the Devil to someone (I mean, I would, and do, but I wouldn't expect them to enjoy it), but this film I believe could have farther reach.

Laissez bronzer les cadavres (2017)
aka Let the Corpses Tan

French spaghetti western set in modern-days. A prime example of style over substance but still oddly intriguing for a majority of the time. Showing the times on screen was pointless and some close-ups served no function at all. Even after a couple of days, it's a hard film to rate. So this is subject to change...

3
--

Dirty Little Billy (1972)

Dirty and kind of nasty slice of life about the early days of Billy the Kid. There's no plot really, just Billy dealing with the life he hates. Like above, this is really hard to rate. It's a little dull at times, some of the action looks awful (especially the knife fight between the ladies) but at the same time Billy, Goldie, and Berle are a great trio of characters. Also, the ugliness of everything becomes a thing of beauty. Again, this is a preliminary rating...

3
--

Dead Birds (2004)

Yet another western but this time a horror film. I'd seen this before when it was new and I remember that my thoughts were pretty much the same as today. The first hour or so are pretty solid and atmospheric horror with some brutal scenes of violence. Towards the end, the plot gets away from the writer's grasp and the twist, in the end, is rather stupid. It's a nice film but there was much more potential, especially as the cast is quite good.

The Night Clerk (Michael Cristofer, 2020)
Tye Sheridan is excellent in this film in the titular role of Bart, a man who has high-functioning Asperger's who has a voyeuristic thing because it helps him with communication. During a shift as a night clerk at a hotel, he finds himself the suspect of a murder, but did he actually do it? The film has a bit of a neo-noir vibe with an excellent supporting from the new Bond Girl, Ana de Armas, as a woman who sees Bart as a means of escape from a complicated relationship and John Leguizamo as the detective in charge of the case. I wish there was a bit more from Helen Hunt and Johnathon Schaech in their performances but I learned some things in a recent interview with Schaech (See my interview thread for the link). Still a solid film nonetheless.

Watched the Dorothy Kilgallen: The Reporter Who Knew Too Much video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYDaqto22NY

Shaw has really done his research, and I'll be looking forward to reading his recent book on the Kilgallen/Ruby/Oswald JFK assassination subjet, Denial of Justice.

Shaw's main focus of interest is on Kilgallen's disclosures regarding Jack Ruby, and his real reasons for shooting Oswald. Shaw is not an expert on the general subject of the JFK assassination, but his research into the subject of Kilgallen/Ruby/Oswald goes to show that there was definitely a plot to Kill Kennedy, and that the book which Kilgallen was writing for publication by Random House, following several interviews with Ruby, would have provided shocking disclosures that could not have been left without public awareness and further investigation. He concludes that this was the reason for her murder.

The lecture itself is about 75 minutes, with the remaining time devoted to questions and answers. Powerful stuff.

Hopefully the film based on Shaw's research being developed by the Dowdle Brothers (No Escape; Waco) will refresh the public's interest in the most important crime of the 20th Century and its subsequent coverup. Reported working title Kilgallen, it will be either a feature film or cable presentation.
