Has it really been fifteen years - seriously, it was the first movie I ever saw - since the first time I saw this movie? I guess it has, but it's weathered the test of time well. It's still as fun and exciting (and quotable) as ever. It was kind of amusing watching Mom scream her head off every time the Predator was gonna kill somebody. I watched it in 2D on my 2D player and TV since I couldn't care less about 3D; I just wanted Predator in 1080p the best it's ever sounded. It's too bad about the DNR, especially considering how they made improvements in color, but it sounds better than ever - hell, even the DTS track on my DVD doesn't stand a chance against it - and I guess this'll do until Fox finally decides to do right by this movie in terms of video quality, considering none of the Predator Blu-rays out there look too hot anyway. Anyways, it was a blast, as it always is, revisiting this one and I'll see you guys later.

"A popular girl on campus, Charlotte, attends a wild party while her boyfriend Wesley is out of town. When she realizes she has become too drunk, she leaves the party. But Jim, who she danced with at the party soon joins her and she becomes forced into a sexual encounter. Feeling ashamed and self-blame, it is difficult for her to find the courage to speak out. When she does, many of her friends do not believe her. Meanwhile, Jim honestly does not think what happened that night was rape. But as members of his own fraternity and campus feminist groups begin to unpiece the grey areas, the ensuing experience challenges the trust and friendship of college students who thought they would be friends forever."

Kong: Skull Island
(Jordan Vogt-Roberts)
https://i.imgur.com/NMxPfEz.jpg
3.5
An effective creature feature that has some well designed shots and dazzling special effects. Kong manages to make a somewhat boring character finally exciting. I had a lot of fun watching this film and look forward to the world building it generates.
The government sends a small team of soldiers, scientists, a tracker and a photographer, to a newly discovered island. Constantly hidden by storms and known for making ships 'disappear', they venture there hoping to find...well, anything. What they don't expect to find is a 100 foot ape, known as Kong.
There are shots in this film that don't belong in a 'Hollywood Blockbuster'. What I mean by that is that they are better than what the genre tends to serve us. Maybe it's just me, but there were moments where I thought to myself "this is gorgeous". There are dozens upon dozens of artwork pieces out there that depict small people with giant God-Like beings in the background. It's not hard to see that Vogt-Roberts took some inspiration from them when depicting Kong. The film pays particular attention to scale and seeing Kong here is probably the most exciting since the original Kong in 1933.
What the film does differently than the recent Godzilla picture, is show Kong immediately. Godzilla, we saw glimpses of here and there. Vogt-Roberts wants us to see Kong right from the start and it immediately takes us by surprise. When we finally see a full sized shot of him, it's a glorious homage to Apocalypse Now (obvious inspiration for whole film) and his initial attack is one of the more memorable scenes of this year.
The film falters, as they all do, when it comes to the human characters. We get very little to go on with Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson. He's a skilled tracker who used to be British Special Forces and she is an anti-war photographer. That's about as much information we get about them. They service the roles fine enough and Vogt-Roberts even manages to reference the Kong-Darrow relationship here with Brie. Samuel L. Jackson is the leader of a team of soldiers known as the Sky Devils. They were literally on their way home when they got the call to go on this mission. Jackson seemed happy and eager to take it, he's a guy whose only purpose seems to be "soldier". He's willing to put the lives of everyone in danger if it means to save one person, or so it would seem at first. The rest of the soldiers are easily identifiable, which helps in knowing who dies or not in the chaos.
John Goodman and John C Reilly fill some supporting roles, with the latter getting the most meat for any character. Reilly plays the comic relief character (no surprise there) but he also has the most emotional story and scenes (surprise there). He is a WWII fighter pilot who crash lands on the island in the opening sequence. Stuck there for almost 30 years, we get a heartbreaking story about his wife just telling him about his baby boy as he left for war. Will he make it off the island to see his wife again? Will he see his son for the first time? Will they welcome him back? Did she re-marry? All these questions plague him, but he remains optimistic no matter what. This film benefits from his inclusion, immensely.
The analogy of western civilization using soldiers to destroy foreign lands and people/creature indigenous to that land is not lost here, it plays a role. But remember, this is indeed a movie about a giant ape fighting other giant creatures. That part of the film, this does very well.

Gintama: The live-action adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi's hit manga and anime series is both action-packed and hilarious. With references to other anime/manga titles and hilarious antics (like a funny af beetle chasing scene), this film could appeal to both fans of the manga as well as newcomers to the film. Shun Oguri, originally thought to be bad casting, is actually pretty good as lead character Gintoki with Assassination Classroom co-stars Masaki Suda and Kanna Hashimoto as Shinpachi and Kagura respectively. The film takes elements from two arcs but overall, IMO, a fun adaptation of a Japanese manga/anime. A sequel is due for release this summer.

I'm slowly trying to get through everything Grindhouse Releasing (http://grindhousereleasing.com/) has in their collection (Their prices on some of their blu-rays are kind of steep, like $44 for this movie, so I just stream them on Amazon when available). I'll be honest with you guys, I'm split on Pieces (1982). On the one hand, the practical affects are amazing, but man, the story is forged in absurdity, even for a slasher flick. Though I think you can't be too critical of a movie that has "It's Exactly What You Think It Is" or "An Important Film" as a tagline - this movie isn't trying to be anything but gruesome, and that's where it succeeds. If you're a connoisseur of B slasher flicks, then I would say you couldn't go wrong, but if not, there's nothing new to see here.

Incredible boring, no humor, very, very BAD!
Depp looks like a parody of himself, the CGI sucks, the dialogues... Oh my God the dialogs... Awful!
Waste of Geoffrey Rush (Oh my dear Barbossa...) and Javier Bardem characters. Kaya Scodelario is one of the worst actress working today, she can't act!
My seven years old cousin would have made a better job with the script and with characters motivations.
It seems they wanted to put Sparrow in the background so he would look like a myth! That only made the character even more mediocre.
It's time to stop.

Yes, the movie is torture. For xenophobic Hollywood drone slaves, who reduce all films to a common denominator, demand to identify with heroes, are unable to accept the original vision of the artist, and run away screaming from unusual camera angles. No surprise - the film surpasses their capacity of cognition. Let them not get their noses out of their beloved Dream Factory, there is a cozy and safe place, nobody challenges or forces anyone to reflect.

This was recommended to me by Nostromo, and I moved it up my watchlist because it's eligible for the female director's countdown. It was silly, but still a good bit of campy fun. Megan Fox doesn't appear to me to be much of an actress, but I thought she did well here playing a hot demon bitch.

I feel this was one of the longest 2h 15m in my life. I was so excited for this so that was super disappointing. The music really irritated me and made me feel like a pretentious pubescent hipster teen just like Elio (maybe that was the idea in which case it was a brilliant score) and I wanted to round shoulder skulk around the house being rude to the adults, always look staving, slam a couple of doors with gusto and be as moody as hell. I cannot for the life of me understand how an adult would find a kid at all interesting on that level apart from those who never outgrew their mommy fixations and childhoods (or vice versa - daddy fixations and hatred of their childhoods thus a desperate need to grow up fast).
This will probably scoop the pool at the Oscars and I will be wondering WTH.
To finish on some positives before I get crash tackled face first into the mud by marauding Mofos, the acting was phenomenal. The kid deserves a gong and I wont bash my head against the wall if he gets it. I really like the house.
Please be gentle with me :)

Finally saw this (and almost wish I didn't).
Why remake a classic sci-fi film with something that is so sub-par in every respect?
The sad thing is I like most of the big names in the cast (Reeves, Connolly, Bates, Cleese).
I usually like to go way into depth as to WHY I liked a movie or didn't like a movie, but this one doesn't even garner that much effort since it had a great precursor to base itself on, and could have been a smash by just retelling the story in the modern era with updated effects, but wasted all the potential inherent in remaking the original.
Here's my rating: just watch the 1951 version, and then watch it again making believe it's the remake!

I watched it recently and remember thinking it was OK for a popcorn hour or two on the lounge if you're in the mood but a bit flat. I think Depp held up the set a lot with his marital and smuggling woes, and the producers probably pushed him to the background. It's nothing to write home about but a good time waster if you have nothing better to do.

I'll admit, I wouldn't have felt that way toward him if I didn't know who he was and who he'd become. When the movie started I was like, "Who's the cute little bratty kid? No... that isn't... oh no... it's 'little' Jaden Smith."

Yes! The sad thing is the guys who "lost" the contests of that episode had to get "blind" tattoos as their "punishment" - they had no idea what they were going to be tattooed with until they saw the final product! (Jaden Smith was the worst of the tattoos - just so random, and so embarrassing to have permanently on your body)!
At first I thought this was a fake, temporary tattoo ("Reality" TV and all), but nope - it's real and permanent, and Sal Vulcano has shown it in many latter episodes.

I thought it ended very abruptly, and there was no character development.
They never really explored how "Helen" changed Klaatu's mind (yeah, he sees her be nice to her bratty step-son, big deal!) except that she was the beautiful Jennifer Connelly.
It was almost like, "Okay, we're going to destroy mankind because you all suck and... oh wait... Jennifer Connelly makin' sexy eyes! She's hot! Okay... species genocide cancelled!" ;)

I didn't mind them tweaking the plot and making it darker in tone - in the original Klaatu comes to give mankind a final warning about nuclear weapons, in the remake, the decision to destroy mankind is already made due to how we're degrading the planet. So the darker story didn't really bother me. It was more the storytelling and lack of character development.
There was no connection to the remake's Klaatu, he had no real reason to develop an affinity for humans as nothing happens to show him relating to them (outside of trading some formulas on a blackboard with John Cleese), and there's no development as to how he's convinced to change the decision of the coalition of alien civilizations he represents (and no explanation as to how he can overturn the decision and stop the plague of nanites, since, earlier in the film he states it's neither up to him nor within his power).
Granted, I may have given it slightly higher marks if it wasn't a remake of a classic sci-fi film and I wasn't comparing it to tne original.
Oh well, so much for me not going into depth on WHY I didn't like it! ;)

I've always been a Linda Blair fan since The Exorcist. I saw Born Innocent when it was first released on TV back in '74, and I liked it despite its grim nature. I really hated the beeyotch who led the rape of Linda---she had that crazy hair and those insane eyes. I tried to watch this on YouTube the other night but they only had the Spanish language version available. I'm not going to pay to stream it, so I guess I'm out of luck. Anyway, I need to go to IMDB and find out who the psycho chick was so I can avoid her forever. :)

I found her name...it's Janit Baldwin and after a short career, she quite acting. I'm so glad. She freaked me out, even though I remember her from some TV shows where she smiled and played a nice person...well, she didn't fool me! She's psycho!
By the way, Dani, if you see the movie, be forewarned that there's a scene where Linda Blair is raped by the girl I've pictured, who uses a mop handle (at least that's what I think it was, if I remember correctly) on Linda while the other girls hold Linda down. It was (and still is for me) very controversial for a TV-movie of the week as they used to title them back in the 70's. Anyway, I could have sworn they showed more than they did back then. But the Spanish version I zipped through the other night just strongly implied the rape, with Janit Baldwin, with a darker head of hair than the pic I provided, bugged her eyes out while she used that handle on Linda. I know it was just a movie, but it still bugs me. Just a heads-up.

I jusdt read a few imdb reviews, dad, and it's vaguely familiar. It's a toilet plunger which is interesting because it's an NBC tv drama and NBC has to be about the most uptight when it comes to censorship. One reviewer said it was censored out in the 80s/90s but she found an uncensored copy on the net somewhere. I think this movie will leave me feeling incredibly sad. Some people should be sterilised at birth - case in point the american couple with the 13 kids currently in the news. Just deeply distressing. Who needs a horror movie, you know. I guess atleast horror movies are fictional.
Thanks. I might have seen that because I really like Linda Blair but I cant remember it.

"The film was also blamed for the rape of a nine-year-old girl, committed by some of her peers with a glass soda pop bottle. This is a Danish movie about a guy who catches his wife cheating on him, and then goes on a sadistic killing rampage. It's a great story and is less than 80 minutes long. If you like movies that are on the sick side, this is made well enough for you to enjoy. Thomas Bo Larsen from The Hunt and The Celebration is the star, so it's not like a bunch of stiffs are involved. It's not a great movie, but it's well worth watching if it suits your taste. Another nice recommendation from MoieGal.

I still regret that I missed Happy Death Day (2017) when it was in theaters. There is a small, ****ty, non-AMC theater about 20 minutes away from me that I always wanted to go watch a horror movie at - and I wish Happy Death Day could have been that movie. But, alas, I finally picked up a Redbox last night and popped it in.
Overall, I really enjoyed it. I feel the movie doesn't have enough fun with its concept, but since original slashers movies are a rarity these days, it's a horror movie that I went into less cynical than I usually am. Rating wise, I keep jumping back to back between a "3.0" or a "3.5" - so I'm just going to go with 3.0.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cb/If_British_poster.jpgI thought you might like that film. I seen that awhile ago and gave it a similar rating. Fans of Clockwork Orange should check out If.... (1968) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063850/)
If....(1968) is a rather notorious British film that earned an X rating when it was first released in the UK for it's subject matter of anarchy aimed squarely at the British class system. This was the first movie in the UK to have full frontal nudity in it, which didn't help win over more conservative taste. Reportedly a British ambassador once called the movie, "an insult to the nation".
And a member of the British Parliament after reading an earlier script of the movie called it, "the most evil and perverted script I've ever read. It must never see the light of day."
Malcolm McDowell is an impish rogue...a rebellious student, fighting the long established British class system in his school. He spends his time drinking, smoking, chasing girls and talking about revolution. His schoolmaster calls him a 'degenerate'.
Note: the ending might be disturbing to some due to recent news events. It's not graphic but is shocking in some ways. The nudity is a brief shot of an actresses, pretty tame by today's standards but no doubt shocking in 1968.
I liked this film but the ending made me uncomfortable. I have no proof of this but this film might be the very start of the Punk movement and working class rejection of the British class system. John Lydon would approve of If....

Exceptionalism is on display all the way through this film that depicts the amazing efforts of true life heroes, soldiers and yes WARRIORS. The battle scenes are intense as well as captivating. They illicit true fear and emotion. Hemsworth and the cast do a great job.
My only quibble comes from how the story was told. It’s very procedural in its delivery. I wanted to learn more about these men as people and wanted to feel the rage of the era. Meaning, I wanted to feel/remember how the country was angry over the cowardly attacks of 9/11 and how everyone was willing to sacrifice anything to combat the dastardly attack and to make those responsible pay. I can’t say the movie does a good job in either of those efforts. More set up was in order and more development of depth was needed to do these remarkable men justice. Yet, it’s great to see this actual story receiving attention and the heroes being portrayed as such.

I had a hunch that someone would mention this film. Watched it on TCM the other night. It's one of those delightful Ernst Lubitsch outings with a screenplay by Samuel Hoffenstein, who also wrote the screenplays for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Phantom of the Opera, The Wizard of Oz, and Laura.
I loved the zany off-beat dialogue between Jennifer Jones, Charles Boyer, and Peter Lawford. The movie lagged just a bit toward the end, but it was still a lot of laughs. Reportedly after Lubitsch died at the young age of 55, a sad Billy Wilder said, "No more Lubitsch." Then William Wyler added, "Worse than that. No more Lubitsch pictures."
I've come to believe that Boyer was actually better at comedy than he was as a dramatic actor.

I've heard people say (mostly the younger audience) that it's on the same level as The Shining/The Exorcist, and I'd have to question those people's tastes. This is nowhere remotely close to being a top 10 horror classic. But still... it was above average.

I caught the 2 hour and twenty three minute version the other night. I like what Romero did with his casting and characters. They all did believable work for the most part. Using a shopping mall for most of the film was a cool idea. I thought the movie was really creepy even if some of the make up, all the blood and a few moments of acting came off dated and flaky. The music by Goblin is adult contempo jazz prog mixed with dark. Very strange and often goofy soundtrack, but still dig it regardless. The editing was the star of this movie for me. The way Romero punctuates some of the drama is mesmerizing, like the reveal of zombies still occupying the parking lot when a tennis ball drops from the roof, or when a one eyed scientist is hammering his reasoning home to a small audience of frustrated politicians.
It might not be a brand spanking new take on zombie lore, but that's only because it was the first, as everything after owes to this film. 4

It's certainly nothing like Donnie Darko as various places mention(unless they meant tone/atmosphere, it shares some of it), so that was slightly disappointing but still an interesting watch.

I watched this because it's on Ebert's great movies list and it's directed by a woman. It's the 4th Ripley movie I've seen after Purple Noon, The American Friend, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. I think they're all quite good. John Malkovich is awesome as Ripley and I always like watching Ray Winstone. This was a very good thriller. The only problem is that I know it won't stay with me.

Taylor Sheridan, the writer, is onboard for the sequel. I’d say he’s as much a draw as Denis or Roger.
I’m not sure how you follow it up. I mean, I see how they’d go on about it but I’ve compared it to a ticking time bomb. It went off in the first film. Unleashing Alejandro.

Le Silence de la Mer (1949, Jean-Pierre Melville)
4.5
This was Melville's debut, and it shows - some of the sequences (von Ebrennac's Paris visit, for instance) seemed a bit half-baked and disjointed, almost documentary in style (not sure if it was intentional or not). But this minor caveat aside, I thought it was great. The hypnotic voice-over narration, Henri Decaë's elegantly nuanced cinematography, the parabolic nature of the story, the perfectly measured anti-war pathos and minimalism - everything about it just struck a chord with me.
A near perfect movie.
I've recently seen these movies:
-"Léon", directed by Luc Besson: I've always wanted to see this movie and now that I did I think it's a really good action movie and an interesting, unconventional love story. I love the way in which it's directed! Especially the first scene, it's very dynamic. I would rate it 8/10.
-"Breaking the waves", directed by Lars Von Trier: This is a very very peculiar movie, one of those movies you need to think about. It's an intense love story, which makes us wonder about faith. I don't want to ruin your first vision, so I won't say any detail. It's very intense, I don't think that I will forget it. I suggest you to watch it. It's directed almost completely with handheld camera: I liked this choice, it made things more intimate. I would rate it 8.5/10.
-"Rome, Open City", directed by Roberto Rossellini. This is Italian Neorealism, the famous post-war style which has caraterized Italian cinema for almost a decade. It's a beatiful movie: the most famous of this style, togheter with Vittorio De Sica's "Bycicle Thieves", which I appreciated more. It's real, true, crude, dramatic as much as life was in those years. I would rate it 9/10.

Watched this just to build up my "Yeah, well I watch foreign movies all the time" cred. The English title is Riot in a Womens Prison which gives away the entire plot. Kind of boring Italian exploitation that it takes itself way too serious. I prefer my Women in Prison movies more along the lines of Big Bird Cage, the Big Dollhouse and Reform School Girls.

This is a good heist film with an excellent job done by the cast. I just think it should have been so much better. There are so many cool situations but it's missing any type of spark. I have had the same issues with many of director Steven Soderbergh's films. I always enjoy them, but with a couple of exceptions, I end up feeling disappointed. I did appreciate the way this movie wrapped up which made everything beforehand seem better.

This series is about the gangsters involved in the infamous 1995 Rettendon murders. I haven't seen part 2 yet, but 3 takes place before part 1 anyway. Craig Fairbrass plays Pat Tate, and he's like a rabid dog. I can watch these British gangster movies all day. This movie is not awesome, but it's awesome if you like a nonstop barrage of violence, drug use, and hot girls. The first of the series is one of the most violent movies I've ever seen, including extreme films. This is not quite at that level but it's way up there. For me, it's fast paced and entertaining.

I like Don Jon coz in funny way shows opinions, which are put in our minds by popculture, for example: man, who loves woman is able to do everything for her. Sounds like Cosmopolitan?

Exactly:yup: I'm not a big fan of Julian either, but I have to admit, her role was charming and warm - enchantress! And the line of Brie... The funniest scene in whole movie:D I think Scarlett was also pretty good. She played in this movie with her image as a sexbomb. Gordon-Lewitt made good job as a screenwriter, director and an actor (as usual).
I’m not sure if Don Jon’s self indulgence is intentional or not and that’s kind of the problem.

90's indie film flair on full-tilt with Kim Bodnia putting in a solid effort, and it's always a pleasure to see Mads doing his thing. The music is dated, but that might add to some of the movie's charm.
The memorable parts of Pusher are the intro and some of the aesthetic choices throughout, but I wouldn't consider it a must see Nicolas Winding Refn film.
One thing I really appreciated was the incredibly slow downward spiral of the main protagonist. As it could have easily become more typical of the genre.

After Trash Humpers, I wasn't quite sure what Harmony Korine would end up doing next. To my surprise, he landed on Spring Breakers. Now, I would like to just mention that I am a huge fan of his movies, and oddly enough, it took me this long to watch this movie.
I am pointing my admiration out, because I have met more than a few people that said they hated Gummo, and while I can respect that perspective, it is worth noting that I am not in that camp.
That said, I think that Spring Breakers has more than enough to offer to just about anyone. Gratuitous violence and nudity? Check. It even has a message hidden in there somewhere, and a "is this a sequel to Kids?" kind of vibe.
Spring Breakers unfortunately suffers a bit in parts but this movie has single-handily reinvigorated my love for the montage. Absolutely incredible storytelling.

Black Christmas. A sorority house is plagued by obscene and weird phone calls over the Christmas season, and then a sorority sister disappears as the body of a schoolgirl is found in a nearby park. A maniac killer is stalking the sorority sisters and may be closer than they even realise in this bone-chilling mid 70s horror flick starring Olivia Hussey, Margot Kidder, Keir Dullea and John Saxon. A brilliant, eerie and genuinely unsettling slice of horror cinema that has lost none of its power to scare in the 44 years since its original release, Black Christmas was once a rather obscure cult favourite but was rediscovered in the 2000s when it finally made it onto wide home media release, and is now acknowledged for the classic it is. I've loved this flick for decades, and it's nice to finally have it on a rather super Blu ray too. :)

My, my, so this is just a beautiful fable told in the most assured and passionate way. It’s really a wonder, this movie. There are so, so, so many ways in which it could have backfired and made an embarrassment out of the people involved but it walks that fine line with such grace and utter commitment and I cannot overstate how much that is thanks to Sally Hawkins’ performance, my favorite that I’ve seen from 2017 and one that’s shot up to my favorites of the decade thus far, possibly ever. What an absolute triumph it is. While it’s heartbreaking, I can’t imagine not falling in love with her instantly. Not often has an actor or actress spoken to me in such a way. Michael Shannon is in close second, practically claiming ownership of the archetype and we’re all in agreement. He turns a fairly one note character into something... more. I kept thinking of Klaus Kinski in Aguirre. The stubborn leader revealed to be barely holding it together, always seconds away from collapsing under pressure. You kind of have to pity the guy (but, then, not). Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins and Michael Stuhlbarg all nail each beat, again, owning every bit of their characters, working as the foundation to the world.
Speaking of which, Del Toro and his collaborators bring such an immersive element to the minute settings, but what else could one expect? The creature, the amphibian man, is a masterpiece and it’s seriously enraging that the film’s out of the running for best make-up at this year’s Oscars. Are you seriously telling me Bright did better?
Back on topic, I heartedly recommend this to anyone who might still be on the fence regarding the concept or those who have lost interest in Del Toro (I know I was). It’s joyous and reminds us of the importance of being heard, of expressing and all the ways that we can combat silence when it is oppressing, in particular of how it is that we can and must help others when one voice isn’t enough.

I have seen a lot
Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, Mimic, Blade II, Hellboy, Hellboy II, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water. I'm a huge Gyspy Danger fan and I think Crimson Peak is a good gothic horror flick. And I have watched season 1 of the Strain.
I’ve seen a few. Devil’s Backbone when I was a kid. The Hellboy movies too. I loved those when I was about 10. Pan’s Labyrinth is my favorite (though, at the moment, SoW is giving it a run...)

Wow that's beautiful.
And I love del Toro.
Bright won best makeup? Bloody hell. Why was this not eligible?

Heh! Just watched this tonight on TCM also!
I'm still going to say the single best Titanic movie of all time is:
A Night To Remember (1958)
http://www.leninimports.com/a_night_to_remember_uk_dvd.jpg
Most accurate depiction that focuses on the history of the sinking of the ship itself (including the causes, failures in engineering, etc.) and not filled with a bunch of fictional backstories, love-triangles and subplots since the real story was dramatic enough.
Bright won best makeup? Bloody hell. Why was this not eligible?
Bright hasn’t won anything.
I don’t know why Shape of Water is out of the competition.

Must be something about screening date I assume. Cant think of what else it would be.
Went to the cinema to see The Commuter today. Liam Neeson is an insurance man fired from his job who finds himself approached on his way home from work by a woman who wants him to help her find someone on the train. The carrot? $100,000 if he does it. The stick? His family dead if he doesn't. Watchable enough thriller with a good cast (always nice to see Sam Neill) but pretty forgettable to be honest. :(:bored:

In this 1977 black and white Soviet wartime drama, two partisans resisting German incursions into Byelorussia during WWII are captured by the Germans when they go to find food at a nearby farm... wow, incredible Cinematography and performances.. I am almost certain Come And See was influenced by this film, the final 20 minutes was something else.

Not a bad movie but a little too over embellished. You cannot take a few hundred men on horseback and beat 5000 men with medium tanks, 50 MM machine guns and rocket launchers. The team was split for a lack of horses - so they only started with 6, and they could call in air strikes. I am sure these guys did themselves proud but it is kind of crazy - very tough to take out a modern tank you are not going to do it with a rifle while on horseback

Its a really heart-breaking story that for me didn't really get going until close to the incident. I found the first half to be too slow and never really got to know the subjects. I didn't really know much going into it, such a tragic story.

I think I'll still give it a go. In a similar vein I've just started 'Wormwood', which is a docu-drama type miniseries by Errol Morris. Quite interesting if a little long winded:

Hmm.
Lots of atmosphere... acting is decent throughout...
Braver than I thought it would be in that there's actual swearing, blood, gore and violence involved. I thought it would be a toned down movie pandering to young audiences who want a few quick jump scenes.
Some decent build up in the more scary scenes... some of which though finish on a highly polished dud-note (like most other horrors of modern day).
Sadly also there's not much in common with the book in terms of monsters.
The novel was written by King as an homage to all the scary creatures he could think of... werewolves, Frankenstein's monster etc etc... and even the 1990 Miniseries tried to have a few creatures in there... but this film has... erm... a clown... and a scary painting... and a clown... then more clown... then a room full of clowns... and a clown.
It's just a scary clown movie as though the filmmakers were pandering to some audiences who just want to see loads of Pennywise and nothing else.
What's important with this is that you can't get behind why the kids are actually scared.
"It" uses various forms to scare the characters... but in this movie, they're all just scared of Pennywise.
One character even says his "biggest fear is clowns"
Bill Skarsgård is absolutely fantastic though.
Excusing the clown references... but in terms of character tone, if Tim Curry was Jack Nicholson, then Bill Skarsgård is Heath Ledger.
He took the role that was made iconic by someone else, and made it his own.
Overall, it's good, but not great.
Hit and miss.
No audience-character connection.
And not actually scary.
I prefer the 1990 miniseries.

A Serious Man - 6.5/10 - I liked the movie more after I watched it, than when I was watching it. Basically, there is no control in life.
Blade Runner 2049 - 9/10 - Amazing visuals and scope. Easy to get lost in a first watch though (at least for me), but it had a great connection to the first movie which makes both of them better. Also makes you question the value of memories.. Very thoughtful movie

It's been many years since I watched the original miniseries. I know I enjoyed it and I feel that at a minimum this was at least as good. This is no longer my type of horror but for the most part I really enjoyed it. With the children I kept thinking I was watching a horror version of Stand By Me. I thought the way we meet and come to sympathize with all of the characters was ok enough, and the horror pretty effective. My only gripe is that the last third dragged for me. It's over 2 hours long, rather long for a horror movie, and I felt it. I wish it were 20 minutes shorter somehow but I thought overall it was very well done. I like Tim Curry’s face better as Pennywise but this guy played it well.

That’s probably the most rewarding Coen movie for me. “Gets better on multiple viewings” is something you hear around film discussion often but this one actually does.
Looking forward to it for sure.

Oh yes. Amazing. I love Tonny and really should think of him as a bad guy but he has a heart of gold. So not a one dimensional character.

I think it shows Dani8 that Tonny is acting up rather than a proper criminal. Due to "The Dukes" reputation. Such a well-rounded performance from Mads. From the downright blackly comical to the heart-wrenchingly tragic.

England Is Mine (2017)
I feel like my general like of Morrissey and my general dislike of biopics of people who are still alive met and cancelled each other out here. Jack Lowden is really good as Morrissey, he does a good job with the mannerisms and tone of voice and the film does pretty well in portraying him as someone both sympathetic and a bit of an twat, as well as capturing the era and the state of mind of someone trapped in a dead-end environment. The female supporting characters were good, too, especially Jessica Brown-Findlay as Linder. I think it's admirable that the film focused on his early life, like The Smiths: The Prequel, but the trouble with a biopic like this is that no matter how fascinating the character, the lack of story lets it down a bit and plausible and relatable as the depiction of his depression and inertia might be, it's a bit of a drag to watch in the second half. But it had its inspiring moments too. Altogether pretty solid.

I watched this because it's on the documentary list and is eligible for the female directors countdown. I'm not a huge documentary fan but this is an Oscar winner and one of the best I've seen. It's about Kentucky miners striking in the early 70's. What's great about is that it's not a story told about something that happened, but rather while it's happening. The director is on the frontlines when things get tense and violent. It's also very interesting seeing how the families are affected and how the wives get involved. I think if anyone would have a complaint, it's that it's a one sided point of view. That didn't bother me.

Went to the cinema to see Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. A bunch of high schoolers come across an old video game that, when activated, drag them headlong into the game in the guise of the "avatars" of the characters they chose to play... and may never let them get back again. This follow-up to the original film from the mid 90s with Robin Williams is a very loose sequel - aside from one moment referencing Williams' character it could just be as easily be a reboot - but is a pretty decent flick nonetheless. An entertaining tongue in cheek fantasy adventure, it doesn't reinvent the wheel but it passes its runtime amiably enough, and the cast - especially Jack Black as a flighty teenage girl stuck in the body of a middle aged man, and the lovely Karen Gillan as the awkward girl turned badass - are game enough to make it fun.
