Overall this movie was fun and had a lot of potential to be a great addition to the monster movie universe. Despite all its flaws I walked away enjoying the final product and excited for the next movies to come, as they are planning to put him up against more monsters. I watched a movie in where I was rooting for a giant gorilla to win against a giant lizard… this is why I love movies.
Better off Dead. John Cusack is a high school teenager so obsessively in love with his girlfriend that he flirts with the idea of suicide after she just casually dumps him for a local ski champion. Between coping with his mom's cooking, the sweet French foreign exchange student living with his creepy neighbours, and a malevolent and relentless paperboy, he ultimately decides to challenge his rival to a suicidal-in-itself ski competition down a notoriously "untameable" nearby mountain... This mid 80s comedy is irreverent, off the wall and frequently hilarious. Great fun from start to finish, this was once a frequent rewatch but I hadn't seen it for about 11 years for some reason, but it's still as great as ever. The DVD did a couple of weird things a couple of times, though, so I think a Blu ray upgrade is both warranted and deserved. I think my fave side character is Vincent Schiavelli's impossibly charismatic maths teacher, who genuinely has his entire class rivetted to his every (incomprehensible) uttering. Genius! :)
Hollywood hasn't made anything as funny as this in donkeys years.

Not too bad:)
I almost thought she's gonna get up and apologize for dad's death to Austin then he would offer her some clothes and a cup of tea. She would madly fall in love with him, get married and happily live together ever after... and then dad and police arrived and spoiled my ending, :D:D:D

LOL yeah .. and nothing happened she was just laying there mute and keeping alive by some transcendent force. I was so expecting she would do something, i mean physically .. have you watched yet dani?

Yeah I said in response to another poster that I thought it was refreshing for horror genre but unfortunately I watched it passed my bed time and fell asleep for the reveal but woke up before the end. I read the reveal on imdb and kinda glad I missed it. Great acting. My only nitpick was the branch lopper used during the autopsy. I've watched real autopsies and never saw something so absurd, but it looked good on screen.
I will watch this one again. Good jump scare at the beginning which gave me a fun fright.

Yeah, the use of brunch cutter was definitely an interesting move but Mr. Tilden looked mighty serious doing it so I didn't want to say anything :D
LOL. It was pretty funny. I was waiting for an accident to happen. Oops. Brian Cox was great.

I know I am kinda late to the party but I just saw this movie. Jordan Peele makes his film director debut and this movie lived up to the buzz I heard about. It was really friggin good! It was unsettling, suspenseful, had its moments of an almost Lynchian surreal feeling, sometimes disturbing, had a great premise, and had humor at the right times. And the end result is a legit horror film. I am very pleased that someone was able to crank out a great modern day horror film.

The biggest defect with extremely cruel cinema is that at some point it becomes absurd artifice which breaks immersion. It's so ridiculous that it allows you to disengage emotionally. It's the same mechanism that allows me to have a good time watching 80s slashers. Even the efforts of Michael Haneke often allow me to wall up my vulnerabilities and watch a film with a meta barrier between it and me. Kidnapped might be the first movie I've seen which doesn't provide the audience with the opportunity to escape. It doesn't house any grander themes to latch onto. It doesn't falter and put violence before logic. It's as close to watching an actual snuff film as I think I'll be getting. Truly terrifying.

I'm happy you're watching great films but I find your reaction to the awesome cinematic creativity on display far more baffling.
Why do you find that baffling? Are we all supposed to see things the same way?
I agree with you, though, that the film was visually very creative for its time and Cardiff's poetic cinematography made it somewhat more palatable but I thought it fell flat in pretty much every other aspect. It just didn't resonate with me much at all. To me, it felt more like a product of its time, rather than a timeless work, and I had difficulty relating to what it had to say. Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting the movie down or saying it's objectively bad - I'm just stating my personal opinion, that's all.
Thanks for your comment.

Yes, it's my #2 of all-time.. The writing is great, and the characters are perfect. While at times tragic, I did laugh out loud a few times, which has only happened in about 1% of movies I've watched. Masina, Quinn, Basehart..
It's emotionally moving, and an accurate portrayal of life, especially opportunism and exploitation. They are all victims. And the few "good" are either unavailable or can't seem to connect with someone else who loves them.

This is the kind of movie that used to be more common back in the 90's, and it's the kind that's right up my alley. I think it's basically a somewhat tame erotic thriller, like Gone Girl lite, or a glorified Lifetime movie. I wouldn't say it was great, but I just really enjoy these types of movies. There were times that I thought it was ridiculous, and I could also see some folks being bored by it. It was a big surprise for me because I wasn't expecting much at all.

Kong: Skull Island (2017)
2.5+
It's fine, just as run of the mill as you can get. It has more visually identity than the 2014 Godzilla, I'll give it that, and it's shot just as well. This is the kind of setting I like to see, but it's been done better by the movies they're clearly taking inspirations from. But, there was a great pace, and tension I really appreciated in Godzilla, it was almost Jaws-esque. Here, we're immediately given Kong, and it just doesn't have the same effect. The way Godzilla was shot, and what was chosen to be shown made him look truly larger than life, and when he was shown one hundred percent, it was a breathtaking reward. Here, they beg to spoil you, mostly showing almost all of him a large majority of the time. He's almost just as big as Godzilla, but he doesn't feel as big, both literally, and the impact he left on the screen as a character. Despite the CG being very, very good, and he's a much more expressive character than Godzilla, the humanity of the character just isn't explored as much as something like the 2005 film. He's much more compelling as a sympathetic being on the loose in a foreign area than he is as a mass protector.
There's a lot of characters in this movie, none of them are memorable. Is there even a main protagonist? I guess Hiddleston's character? He's very boring. The closest thing to a memorable character, and performance would be Reilly, but his performance outweighs the character, and writing, he's never allowed to truly let his oddball qualities shine.
The best part of the movie are the monsters than inhabit Skull Island. There's a lot of really cool looking ones, from a gigantic buffalo covered in moss, and other greens, birds with razors for beaks, and the main threat of the movie, the "skull crawlers," appropriately named reptilian creatures with skull looking heads, and a snake like body, there's no missed opportunities here. They're plentiful, and every one of them stands out. It's funny how Godzilla, the series famous for it's plethora of memorable movie monsters, is beaten in this category, by the other series that's really only known for it's key player. Sadly, Skull Island had me more excited than Kong did himself in this one. Still, I'm glad they're there, and if the creativity of these designs is consistent in other movies in this series, we're in for a hell of a show.
Again, this isn't a bad movie, there's some cool moments. There's some fun monster fights when they happen, it's visually impressive, and John C. Reilly wields a samurai sword for a brief moment, that has to be mentioned. But, judging by this film alone, when Godzilla, and Kong finally duke it out, Godzilla's definitely going to kick Kong's ass. He kind of already did here.

This is another 40's movie I randomly picked out, this time from the noirs list. A dangerous criminal is on the loose and the police have to find him with very few clues. This is a very tight movie at less than 80 minutes long. There's a strong villain, good tension, and short effective bursts of violence. There's a great scene of a room full of people trying to come up with a sketch. The only annoying thing is the occasional newspaper reporter style narration that seems to be common in noirs from this era.

This is a biographical film about the Curies, a couple of science geeks who fell in love and discovered radium. I did not enjoy the movie very much, but I had to give it a strong rating because I think it has plenty of merit. I enjoyed the relationship aspect, but the science part bored the hell out of me so much that I could never become completely engrossed. It is extremely well made with excellent performances, and it's a movie filled with beauty and grace. I would like to revisit it again at some point, and I think there are members here who would love it.

Caught this one about a week ago out of Redbox. I haven't seen any of the other Best Actor movies so I couldn't give you a true reading on whether Affleck deserved his Oscar or not. He was most definitely on his A game. Extremely subdued performance which is what was required. The red haired kid who was nominated as well might have even been a little better to me. Michelle Williams was good but she was in it for about 15 minutes tops, not enough to me to earn a nomination. The movie itself sucks you in. I was completely wrapped into the story. However this is a one off viewing for me. Once you know the twist it sort of ruins repeat viewings. It will stay with you for awhile but it is not the most exciting movie so you won't be dying to repeat it soon after.
Final Verdict: Worth a view. 3.5 out of 5.

Well this was an experience. It probably did deserve the best picture (I haven't seen La La Land). It was extremely captivating to watch the kid grow up. I don't know if this makes any sense but the 3 different actors were both a highlight and distraction for me. I can't explain it haha. Really happy Mahershala Ali won the award because I did research on him after and he seems like a stand up guy who actually has his feet on the ground compared to most these movie stars. Doesn't hurt he played D1 basketball at St. Marys, as I played in college as well. (much lower level lol). With all that being said he was in the movie 20 minutes if that. It was a strong 20 but not enough for me to deserve an Academy Award. The whole cast was awesome including Harris. The two stands outs to me though was the kid who played the 2nd stage and Trevonte Rhodes who played the grown Chiron. I thought Rhodes performance was juicier and better than Ali's (not that Ali was bad at all). I think Rhodes has the potential to be a superstar. That performance was incredible (to me) and he has it all; charming, the body, the chops, magnetic personality, looks. Hopefully he gets some good work after this.
The movie itself was shot beautifully. Barry Jenkins is definitely a talent to look out for. The movie could have easily fallen apart but it was structured wonderfully to keep you full attention. There are going be some iconic shots from this movie. I could see myself watching it a few more times. Maybe even buy it down the road (when it hits the sales rack)
Final Verdict: Worth a buy. 4 out of 5

Alien (1979)
http://cdn.movieweb.com/img.news.tops/NEHaoZx6C977KJ_3_b.jpg
Caught this on AMC today ha. On spring break from school so don't judge me lol. I am sure I have seen bits and pieces of all the Alien movies but never actually sat down and watched any of them. Not really in my wheel house of genre. It is interesting though that I saw Prometheus before I saw any of the previous Alien movies. A different perspective than most probably. I can see why this was so successful, specially in 1979. It was a great thriller that had me closing my eyes multiples times. I was also expecting the special effects to maybe not hold up as well but they surprisingly did. I mean here and there it dated itself, especially the computer stuff, haha, but that's expected. It was not a distraction like it can be in other older movies. It makes me want to watch Aliens soon, not sure about viewing Alien again anytime soon. Just not my cup of tea per say. But I can appreciate a good movie when I see one.
Final Verdict: Worth a buy 3.5 out of 5 (gets hurt a little because not my favorite genre)
http://i.imgur.com/H9sUk1q.jpg
Had seen this many, many years ago and watched it again last night. Nicely made, tight actioner with an interesting take on vigilante justice and when taking it to the streets is over the line and morally corrupt. Harry Callahan, America's favorite vigilante cop has to stop a traffic cop vigilante force that is basically doing what Callahan himself does, but on a larger, more ruthless scale. An interesting film, but doesn't really illustrate that hazy line between right and wrong concerning justice. It throws in a casualty to tip the scale for plot reasons, but it still never really explains why Callahan finds their particular brand of justice as worthy of punishment, as he deems it, and only does his policeman allegiance really come into play when he is faced with the main villain, in which case I won't spoil it in case someone hasn't seen it. All in all, very cool film. Bought the dbl feature Dirty Harry/Magnum Force on blu ray for $5.99 at the grocery store. Very nice transfer.

The Major and the Minor (1942) 4 Billy Wilder's very first film and hits it on his first try with a zany plot and some top notch actors to pull it off; Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland, this was funny and enjoyable all the way through. And I gotta say, Ginger with dark hair is all kinds of gorgeous!!
https://moviesovermatter.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/the-young-in-heart.jpg
Young in Heart (1938) 4 A family of con artists meet up with an elderly woman and without realizing it, find themselves on the relatively straight and narrow. A great cast with Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Billie Burke (Glenda the Good Witch from Wizard Oz fame) and Roland Young are the family of scoundrels and all perform with a heartwarming aplomb.

Our Kind of Traitor 3.5 A solid, old school spy story with a strong cast that, while it sort of quietly ambled through, was still worthwhile.

http://i.imgur.com/kSn7asD.jpg
I've seen more than one movie which invoke Orwell though the aesthetics of a work such as 1984 to a greater extent than its historical revisionism and heartbreaking betrayal. Bugajski makes a stricter, more clear political statement than those. The statement so potent and gut wrenching that it resulted in this work being suppressed for 7 years before the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc. Thankfully this saw the light of day.
Similar to Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave, the fish out of water nature of the protagonist allows us to self-insert into an unfamiliar environment instantly. As cliche as it is to use a woman as a punching bag for overwhelming suffering, Bugajski smartly uses the gender dynamic to fully express the gravity of the state's violations. The relationship that forms between the woman and her captor expresses the doubt of the individual within the morally corrupt system while also admitting the effectiveness of violent coercion. The product of their relationship proves the indellibility of state's actions, however far removed from the circumstances allowing them. It's a very well thought out, albeit rather conventional, picture with criticisms just as virile and scathing today as they were decades ago.
The Room (2003) 5/10 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e1/TheRoomMovie.jpg/220px-TheRoomMovie.jpg
So I found this cult classic on Youtube and finally watched the Movie in full after obsessing over Tommy Wiseau for a bit researching everything I could about him and watching all his interviews on Youtube. It turns out from all the clips I've watched I pretty much already watched the Movie. I must say that the acting by everyone besides Tommy isn't as bad as what people make it out to be. Juliette Danielle the actress that played Lisa did a fine job of making me believe that she was in love with Johnny in those scenes where they have fun together although her delivery of lines could use a bit of work she wasn't that bad. I quite like the dialogue I love how highly quotable and poetic Johnny's lines are at times. But once you've experienced the Movie it's not really that re watchable, This Movie is much better viewed when with friends than alone. What is more entertaining than the Movie is Tommy Wiseau himself and how he interacts with people during interviews and the story behind how the **** this Movie got made.

Syndromes and a Century (2006, Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
Time, memory, love, the intrinsic randomness of existence, the vacant stares and silences, the deceptively superficial husk that hides whole dimensions of meaning - how can you analyse these things coherently and not end up sounding like a wannabe know-it-all film critic in the end? I know I can't, and I'm sure I would be doing this film a great disservice if I tried.
So I can only tip my hat to Apichatpong Weerasethakul for sharing his innermost self through this film and encourage everyone who hasn't seen it yet to give it a try.

KONG: SKULL ISLAND (2017) 3.5
The problem with Godzilla was that the story kept focusing on the humans too much. This film still focuses on the humans to an extent, but Kong is still there throughout and kicks ass. Not really a shocker but yes the best parts are all the sequences with Kong, and once again most of the characters we're suppose to be invested in are pretty bland and given very vague backstories, with the exception of John C.Reilly's character. Which disappointed me but this film takes place in the past, while the sequels (including King Kong vs Godzilla, **** yes take my money now) will probably take place in present day like Godzilla did so I don't really feel the need to be attached to these characters anyways. Despite most of the characters being bland the actors still give solid performances which is good. Overall this film is not better than Peter Jackson's King Kong but it's still a solid reboot nonetheless, and an improvement from 2014's Godzilla.

The Challenger (2015)
:D
Where to start with this.
It is like a weird Rocky tribute.
Seriously, there are lines lifted straight from Rocky and used in this film.
It was like a bad reboot. So many blatant copies of the Rocky films, there was even a picture of the great Mr Balboa in one of the scenes.
Kent Moran has watched Rocky and 'wrote' directed and starred in his own version of it.
The acting was woeful and overall it just wasn't very good.

Minority Report (2002)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/44/Minority_Report_Poster.jpg
Was inspired to watch this from the sci-fi countdown thread since it's a movie I've always been interested in seeing and have access to (it was On-Demand!).
The good: Philip K. Dick always provided cerebral sci-fi and this story made for a very good movie. You had to pay close attention because it is also a complex murder mystery thriller, yet the film still pulls the story together without the viewer feeling lost. But it was full of twists, turns and intrigue that made for a satisfying watch. Certain parts of the story reminded me of Logan's Run and Strange Days.
The not so good: First, this is purely a cinematic comment, but what is it with filmmakers and glare? Almost every seen in this movie had harsh glare pouring in from one direction or another. I felt like I needed sunglasses. Not that this ruined it or anything and I understand creating "atmosphere," but what it said to me is that the future is full of glare.
My usual criticism - just a little too long. At a run time of 2 hours and 25 minutes, this movie is about 20 minutes too long. What could've been edited or cut down for time? Chase & fight scenes. While imaginary within a futuristic setting, the chase & fight scenes felt like areas where the film deviated from P.K. Dick's mind-bending conceptual developments... to... satisfying demographics via modern filmmaking formulas (i.e. if you don't have your chases and fist fights, no one will come see it). ;)
I give the movie 3_5
It also got me thinking about a much larger concept I'll start a thread on:

Gideon, I love The Commitments! I haven't seen it in years but it's so memorable and touching and funny. The first thing I think of when I hear about this movie is "Who are your influences." :) And I used to love the pretty young blonde singer in the movie, but over the years I've come to really like Maria Doyle Kennedy who played Natalie. She's been in a ton of stuff over the years, including cable shows like The Tudors and Dexter. Anyway, a movie I need to purchase. Thanks for the reminder!
The Big Sleep (1946)
This is the first time I've seen this, the second time I've seen Humphrey Bogart play a hard-boiled private detective after The Maltese Falcon. He plays Philip Marlowe here. The first film is still my favorite film noir, but this is another great piece of cinematic noir featuring Bogie. In this, his Marlowe is hired by a rich, disabled man to scare a man away from his wild daughter played by the beautiful Martha Vickers, who has a habit of making the hired help fall in love her, then hanging with the wrong men, etc. etc. All kinds of bad stuff happens around her. Before he even gets out of the house after being hired, he's had a run-in with sisters, the other being the also beautiful Lauren Bacall. It all gets complicated with bodies piling up, Marlowe getting beat up, people getting shot, guns being drawn, cars tailing other cars, blackmail, Bogie hilariously pretending to be a slightly effeminate book buyer, Bacall singing at a party, etc. etc. All the good stuff that makes up a fine Bogie detective flick.

Bonnie is not in the movie because she is passed on. Her kids, two daughters, are now stuck living with their drunken molester stepdad. After they knock him off, they go off to live with their uncle, who happens to be a mobster with a hot little lesbian wife. One of the girls does an errand for the uncle and decides to rip him off. This is a grindhouse movie, perfect for the drive-in, and an obvious inspiration for Tarantino. The violence and nudity is not over the top, and the result is a pretty decent movie that's a lot of fun.

I think he acted well but did not really bring anything new to the genre that others have done before. Guys like De Niro and Pacino paved the way for what pretty much Depp did in this. Legend with Tom Hardy I felt was done better and seemed to bring something a bit more refreshing.

A little girl sees affection all around her, but she can't find any for herself. She's a free spirit who runs through the desolate streets, splashes along the shore lines, dances by herself, and caws like a crow to ward off ornery little boys who only torment her. Her father is long gone. Her mother works through the nights, sleeps through the days, and spends her free time elsewhere. The bird-like girl perches along fence lines to peep on a family like the one she's been deprived of. Instead of fantasizing about being given the care she desires, she wants to care for another. It's a lonely dream, one that's beautiful and sad, demonstrating that even the innocence of youth can't escape the cruelty of the world.

I'd say that's an insult to both Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino. Not because the movie isn't great, it's damn near perfect, but it's a slap in the face to the two men.
Tarantino wrote it, but Scott directed it. To state it is a Tarantino film is insulting the Scott. To say the best thing Tarantino has done is something he never directed, is insulting to Tarantino.
Also, the script Tarantino wrote is different than the finished product. Originally the film was told out of sequence, like Pulp Fiction. Scott threw that away and told the story chronologically, which works in the film's favour. Second, a certain character was suppose to die at the end, Scott changed that too.
Tarantino wrote this and Natural Born Killers together,, as this quasi-big one film. He split it, sold the two scripts and the rest was history. True Romance is a great flick, but I wouldn't call it Tarantino's best film. That don't make sense to me.

True Romance may have been directed by Tony Scott, but it's got Tarantino all over it. Personally I'd say that - especially with someone who has a specific style like Tarantino - many movies belong just as much to their writer as they do to their director.
On that note, I certainly don't consider Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to be a Michel Gondry film, even though it is. I consider it a Charlie Kaufman film. Similarly, I associate Being John Malkovich more with Kaufman than I do with Jonze, even though Jonze is quirky on his own.

It's like saying Se7en is an Andrew Kevin Walker film. Nobody would say that.

Well the three films I've seen that he wrote do have some very similar themes. Se7en and 8MM in particular are both about people going pretty deep into a very seedy, very dark environment in order to investigate murder, putting themselves and loved ones at risk in the process. Sleepy Hollow isn't much different, but being an adaptation I can't credit Walker much for that.
So, if someone called Se7en Walker's film, I personally wouldn't argue against it.

I just don't see how anyone can do a synopsis, review, critique of a film and not mention the director really. After all it is he or she who has (or is supposed to have) the overall management and oversight of the end product of the film. That's all my point is.

Because people should take the feelings of directors - and your sensibilities in regards to what makes something a particular person's movie - into account when expressing their opinions?
Right, so Natural Born Killers is a Tarantino film too, right? Give me a break. I don't care about director sensitivity, it's just basic FACTS that I'm looking for. It is not a Tarantino movie....period. It's a Tony Scott movie.
Like I mentioned prior, the script was different; different ending, different structure. Different film.
Is From Dusk Till Dawn a Tarantino movie? No.

The elegance of the compositions kept me interested, but I was unable to engage with the film on an intellectual or emotional level. I'll continue viewing Straub/Huillet films...yet I can't help but feel that their films simply are not for me.
Abraham Lincoln 2.5+
The opening acts promised a masterwork akin to Ford's Young Mr. Lincoln. Walter Huston's performance is one of the best I've seen in ages, and the photography - as typical of Griffith - is terrific. The film, however, doesn't possess any narrative flow; we see several moments in Lincoln's life, but it's all at a distance, and without any semblance of cohesion. There's a masterpiece in here somewhere...just not in its current state.

Tickled
(David Farrier & Dylan Reeve)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/9a/Tickled.png/220px-Tickled.png
3
When I first heard about this film, my eyebrows raised from confusion and interest. Then when I saw it available on demand, I made sure to sit my wife down to watch it with me. Her look of complete confusion and the questions she asked during and after gave me a chuckle. This is one weird film.
For those who do not know what it is about, a New Zealand journalist stumbles upon a video online about 'Competitive Endurance Tickling'. Those three words were enough to pique his interest and watch. After finding it somewhat humorous, he knew he had to dive deeper into this odd phenomenon. Big mistake. After finding the company that puts these competitions on, he requested interviews and information and was greeted with homophobic hostility (he's gay) and threats of legal action. Not wanting to be bullied away, he goes head first into the investigation and discovers a world of deceit, fraud and identity theft.
Wow, yes, this film takes some weird turns and leaves you scratching your head over the absurdity of it all. I'll try not to go into too much detail because half the fun in watching this is seeing how depraved the rabbit hole goes, but this film needs some sort of explaining. I'll pose this question to you; if you were looking for some quick cash and a company offered you $2,000, hotel and a flight to the shooting location, would you partake in this tickle competition? How it works is, you are strapped down on a mat. Hands and feet are both tied and another man (they are all men) sits on top of you and....tickles you. Then more men come over and they...tickle you as well. One individual had four men tickling him at once; one for each foot, one for his torso and another under his arms. He laughs and squirms, but he can't go anywhere. This is all filmed as well. Nothing too sexual about it.
Then the video randomly appears online.
When you ask for the company to take it down, that's when things get weird...er. This company then send the video to all your friends, family, co-workers with hateful messages about how perverted you are and how dangerous you are to children, etc. They try to destroy your life and have succeeded in a few cases. It's somewhat tragic.
Farrier interviews a tickle fetishist and he explains how it's no different from a foot fetish. Sure, people have their weird sexual fantasies and what not, but the individual(s) behind these attacks seems to be on another plane of existence. How far will this company go to humiliate people? Will they steal identities? Threaten fake legal action? Threaten lives? The answer to all of these questions is of course, yes.
Tickled is one of the weirdest documentaries I've ever seen and it's the subject matter that saves an otherwise mediocre film. Check it out for the sheer absurdity of it.

A lot I like about this it but it was so poorly executed and the potential utterly squandered. I was all set to give this a high score but it never moved anyplace, disappointing to say the least

Werckmeister harmóniák (2000, Béla Tarr)
A bleak but fascinating study of an innocent intellectual (although a question arises at the end of the film whether he was all that innocent, after all) trying to survive in but ultimately being taken hostage by a hostile, culturally degrading environment. Tarr's long takes throughout the film are incredibly effective in creating the atmosphere of inescapable misery and dilapidation. Menacingly slow and dense in its emotional undertones, the film gradually builds up to a horrific climax when all semblance of humanity is suddenly stripped off from the faces of the sometime normal, law-abiding citizens. The hospital attack scene is genuinely bone-chilling in its depiction of senseless violence and contains what is probably one of the most harrowing images put to film.
The film is as much a cold, unflinching portrayal of the inherent flaws and weaknesses of human nature as it is a warning that lack of government creates a vacuum, and evil forces eventually come and fill the void.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." I remembered this quote by Bertrand Russell at some point during the film, and yes, it's as relevant as ever.

I put this in the same category of films as American Pie. By that I mean I did not see this film when it first came out and by time I did, I can't connect with it. The movie involves a group of high school kids trying to score booze so they can get laid. I'm 31 years old, I can't relate to these issues. Not to mention their is way too much Michael Cera in this movie who is a dweeb and Jonah Hill is not in Moneyball or The Wolf of Wall Street form yet. Only thing I got out of it was that I think that between Cera's peculiarities with sex and girl and Hill's obsession wih drawing penises, I think both characters were both closeted homosexuals. I also think the last shot of them as they stared at each other as they went their separate ways in the mall was them saying goodbye as they leave with their beards. Maybe if I had seen this when I was 22 I would have liked it, but I doubt it.

A little different from most of the movies I've seen from director Ozu, this focuses on 15 years of a father/son relationship. He is a widower, and we see the boy as a 10 year old and a 25 year old. Ozu regular Chishu Ryu is excellent as the father. This is definitely one of the best movies I've seen that is about the relationship between father and son, and I think it would be quite sentimental for many viewers. The only problem is the mediocre restoration. The picture did not hurt my viewing, but the constant staticky sound was an annoying distraction.

Such a boring Movie it only goes for over 80 minutes but it felt like 4 hours.
There were 2 good scenes in the Movie but the rest is painfully boring.
Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) 3/10
Decided this based on liking Richard Linklaters previous work and seeing this got nominated for best cast on this site.
This Movie was another terribly paced boring movie and the acting in this piece of **** sucked. The soundtrack was good though but it's pretty hard to **** up a soundtrack to a movie set in the 70's.

I'm not sure who here on MoFo recommended this movie, but whoever you are, I may never forgive you for making me watch this movie. I loved the movie, but I cried through almost the entire second half of the movie. :bawling:
Watching Hachi waiting at the train station for someone who was never going to come home was heartbreaking. By the time the movie was over, I don't know if I was sad that he died or happy that they were reunited again.

There's an episode of the show Futurama "Jurrasic Bark", that is famous for being powerful. Personally i think it is pretty weak coz it is just a retelling of the Hachiko story with manipulative music. So is Hachi: A Dog's Tale, both of them really annoy me just for existing. If it is your introduction to the story then fair enough though.

I don't watch "Futurama", and I didn't know anything about the Hachiko story before watching this movie, so this is the only version of this story that I've seen. And tbh, after watching that, I don't think I could sit through another one for a while.

Rewatched Skyline for the first time since I saw it on release day in the Cinema when I gave it a 4/10 for bad pacing, irregular acting and poor ending.
I watched it now with no hype and a fresh pair of eyes and and aimed to view it purely as a mindless scifi action movie and now have changed my rating to a 6/10 as yes the story is badly plotted and the acting pretty lax but the monsters are cool, the action pretty impressive and it was a fun ride.
Look forward to the sequel this year.

In various ways, they really are trying to make these films as queer and as goofy as possible. That opening fight scene was a real joke. Maybe they were trying too hard to be a bit like Guardians of the Galaxy with this installment. I liked Jaylah for my favourite character. I'm not a Star Trek fan, so, I got pretty much what I expected from this blockbuster. I'll still check out any future releases, just for the action.

If this was a completely new original story, I would be more high on it. It was very well executed; the songs are great and like I said above the production value is amazing. But when I sat down to really think about it, if I had to choose only one to watch, it will be the original animated version. Overall the movie is fun, heartfelt and has an incredible cast. I had fun and I laughed for a good chunk of the two hour and ten-minute running time and this is why I love movies.

So I guess Jigoku is Japanese for Hell, and that's a title that makes sense for this movie. You could say the movie has two parts to it. The first hour focuses on the questionable actions of some characters, and how they affect others, and it's an enjoyable first hour. From there, they all end up in hell, and are punished for their various sins. I don't remember another movie spending a half hour in hell, and it was fairly unnerving even if I don't believe in that stuff. The movie works if you're looking for something a little wild, or if you're interested in the theme of morality.

Holy crap, that was great! I loved the first movie, but this comes very close to it. It's only by a slight margin I like the first one the most, since I can definitely see why some people has this as their favorite. It started off as a typical teen slasher (fun to watch, but not much substance), but then turned into something much, much better and creepier. While yes it's still ridiculous and very funny (when the zombie of Mary Lou burst out of Kelly's chest, I laughed out loud for almost a full minute), it's at the same time very tragic and heartbreaking. Mary Lou wasn't a nice person, but she didn't deserve such a cruel fate.
The acting was great. I loved Wendy Lyon, Lisa Shrage and Michael Ironside in their roles, since they were the most committed to their characters and demonstrated the most emotional depth. Lyon even handled the transformation her character went through expertly.
Bruce Pittman does a good job taking over after Paul Lynch, creating atmosphere like a professional, and most scenes are shot beautifully. One of my favorites is when Lyon gets sucked into the blackboard, which is some of the freakiest s'hit I've ever seen.
If just the first half hour was handled better (the opening scene was great, but after that it took a pretty long while before it picked back up), but most horror movies have their flaws. Strongly recommended, don't skip this sequel!
Oh, and that horse scares the hell out of me.

I hadn't read much about it before going in, so for some reason I thought this was going to be a prison movie but the prison segment turned out only a small part of the story (which, I admit, was a tad disappointing). But anyway, overall this was a pretty good movie with some crisp b&w cinematography, and it had some great moments in it. Kirk Douglas was excellent in his portrayal of an idealistic, old-fashioned cowboy at odds with modern reality, and Walter Matthau as a droll, cynical sheriff was fun to watch. However, I thought the protracted mountain chase segment brought the movie down a notch - it was kinda dull and added little to the story.
This was Kirk Douglas' favorite of his own films, which says a lot and alone makes it very much worth giving it a shot if you haven't yet.

It seems that I've been enjoying everything I've been watching, and I thought a bad movie could give me a little perspective. It's a nice roll to be on, but it has me questioning my own ratings. Anyway, Jennifer Lawrence is very good as always, and Chris Pratt was well suited for his role. There is a fantastic moral dilemma in this movie, and that's what carries the whole thing. The spaceship was very cool, and the bar and bartender were crazily reminiscent of The Shining. My wife picked this movie out; it was a huge surprise for me and she loved it too. It would have made my list for the Sci-Fi countdown had I seen it in time.

Just, no.:tsk:
I'm not influenced by his Potter days, since I've only seen portions of the first couple of Potter films while flipping channels. I never actually watched one intentionally.
Here, he briefly tries to convince us that he's an FBI agent tough guy, who happens to be all of 3 apples tall. If it wasn't for the boots, his head would probably only reach the side mirror of his F-150. His sissy appearance and early approach to going undercover, make it even less believable.
Throughout the movie, he bounces back and forth between his white power family and his FBI family, like he's visiting for holidays and BBQs. There is almost no sense of urgency or danger conveyed to the viewer. The rest is a real mess, scrambled up in a hurry. I didn't care for the casting, the story or the acting.

Looked superb and was really well done.
That was the good and the bad bit of it for me.
Good because it looked superb and was really well done.
This for me was also the downside. It looked good and 'real' so the 'Beast' suddenly became more threatening in appearance, but there was no change to the script to reflect that. He was still a 'kids cartoon character' in everything but appearance.
Good casting.
If you like the animated version then I think you will like this.

I've serenely enjoyed watching that movie. I've found the alleged extraterrestrial beings and vehicles sort of "realistic". Was not expecting much from this and quite rightly too. Dreadful acting, CGI, plot and totally over the top and completely unrealistic action scenes. However I do believe that there is a place for unrealistic action in movies I most certainly love the likes of Commando and Rambo part II and this film does deliver on that front while still being nowhere near as good as those classics lol. So if you want to disengage your brain some entertainment can be found here just dont expect much from it.

A lot of people recommended this to me a year ago, and the first 10 minutes are the best. He's in the desert, all by himself, and his good friend, Whiskey, the horse. He doesn't have a single possession, enjoys the nature and the serenity. Then we he gets on the horse, we hear nothing but car horns, looking at the guy like he was crazy, and he sees the modern world as crazy.
I didn't like any of the scenes inside the jail, after checking in (I loved the "I don't need ID, I know who I am"); the modern world vs. the world previous..

Gunslinger, Black Snake Moan was a fine flick. Ricci and Jackson were awesome, but I was surprised at Justin Timberlake. I'm not much of a fan of his, music-wise, but I think he did a fine acting job here.
Steve Freeling, Raw Deal was just one of dozens of Arnold movies a friend of mine and I caught at the cinema. We were huge fans (I still am, don't know about him) and this one was ideal for us. My favorite line, or at least the one I always remember from the movie is Sam Wanamaker (the mob boss) saying to Arnold, "Smart I like, smart-ASS, I don't!" I've used that a few times, but only in joking situations. :)
Recent re-watch:
Charlie, the Lonesome Cougar (1967)
This was one of the first of many Disney "live-action" movies I saw, and it , like the others, was presented to our class in first-grade in our auditorium. Of course, all of the class loved it. A lumber worker finds an abandoned cougar kitten up in the forest and takes him back home, where he lives among the workers at a saw mill. He naturally wrecks havoc, trashing stuff in the kitchen and being chased by the cook's small dog (really small when compared to Charlie). It's not all bad times---Charlie jumps in on a log-rolling contest among the workers. But he causes more havoc the older he gets and is caged. He ends up escaping and wandering up into the foothills of the mountains. He has many adventures before returning to civilization but he's not the same cougar who left. Anyway, as this was mostly a kid's movie, it all ends happily. The scenery is beautiful, filmed in Washington State. Rivers, mountains, lush, green hills, all make for a wonderful backdrop to this very entertaining story.

I was kind of on board when it was taking the "cool action hero" persona and making it villainous, but the jarring turn about 40 minutes in just throws character motivations to the wind. Abhorrent pacing. No amount of leaning into the absurdity can redeem it. That's coming from somebody who usually enjoys jumping the shark. Oh, and the soundtrack is not only out of place, but so obviously lifted from Drive that it's pathetic. No, it doesn't sound like the 80s. It sounds like nostalgia for the 80s.
A genuinely frustrating movie that squanders its promise to the point where it makes you regret ever giving it credit in the first place.

I thought for sure this was going to be another Taken progeny where the older vet gets his action vehicle predicated on rescuing a family member to make you think you care about anything besides the action and violence. To the movie's credit, it really does try to build a connection and flesh out characters. I wasn't really swayed, but I respect the effort. Thankfully, Grizzled Gibson does get the opportunity to satisfy those more primal desires as well. The kind of movie you want to half watch on a Sunday afternoon.

Harvey (1950)

I quite like the premise on paper, but I was a little disappointed with the execution. It is supposed to be considered a comedy, but I found myself wanting to know more about Elwood and Harvey. Almost the entire second act is a "Where's Elwood?" game. Still enjoyed it for what it was and did appreciate Elwood's long chunks of dialogue near the end.

I liked the opening the best, too - the scenes with Gena Rowlands were good, and the whole premise of him getting himself into prison to help his buddy had some potential. I thought it would have been a lot more interesting if he had failed to escape and was caught by the guards but unfortunately it went in a different direction. But then again, that's in the original novel, so it's not a legit complaint, really.

Is this movie as bad as I think or I got old?
What have they done with Jared L.? He was so cute when I saw him last time. He shouldn't wear green.
Beside, there isn't and I doubt there will be better Joker than Jack Nicholson!

This is a made for TV movie in which Hal Holbrook plays a mentalist with a pacemaker. His wife (Katharine Ross) wants her lover (Brad from The Rocky Horror Picture Show) to scare him to death so they can get all his money and supposedly be together. This is an entertaining mystery/suspense flick especially when the twists and turns come into play, and the performances are fun to watch.

Beauty and the Beast 2017
Looked superb and was really well done.
That was the good and the bad bit of it for me.
Good because it looked superb and was really well done.
This for me was also the downside. It looked good and 'real' so the 'Beast' suddenly became more threatening in appearance, but there was no change to the script to reflect that. He was still a 'kids cartoon character' in everything but appearance.
Good casting.
If you like the animated version then I think you will like this.

They did change his character though, in the cartoon he was more like Gaston, a brute who couldn't read. Here, he's actually educated and more in line with what Belle would find attractive in a man (using that term loosely). That's a change in character I can get behind.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)
The stuff in this movie ranged from above average to bad. There was a lot of stuff I kind of liked but nothing that was better than the original. That can sum up the whole movie right there, it's okay, but it was done better in the original. And thus, it's an entirely pointless remake since everything in the original still holds up pretty well. And Bill Condon's direction was completely lifeless, I think he just saw stuff they did in the original and put it in the film with out understanding why they put it there. There was only one thing in the movie that really pissed me off, and that was Beast. He looks terrible, he looks just looks like a guy with fur on his face and horns, and it's not just in his design, but in the effects. Good lord, the 2D version looks more three dimensional than the supposed three dimensional one. However, the costume and production design was really good, but better in the original. Overall, I say just see the original, your not missing out on much.

The whole movie is 80's, not just the soundtrack. Drive did the soundtrack well, but the film didn't feel like it belonged in the decade. The Guest does and I'm not so sure about the turn being 'jarring' it seemed inevitable to me.
I really liked this one and believe it to be an underrated gem. Sorry you didn't like it, but it's a solid 4 for me.

Departure (2015)
Implausibly well-dressed gay teenager and his mum who's on the verge of a breakdown pack up their house in France and get involved with a troubled local youth.
The director's first full-length film and it shows. It's very pretty and there are some really good bits, but it just doesn't sustain the running length. There needed to be more tension or more conflict or more change in the characters.

Patriots Day
(Peter Berg + Mark Wahlberg)'s third installment after Lone Survivor and Deep Water Horizon based on true events which I really liked. It is based on bomb explosion on April 15th, 2013 Boston marathon.
Liked the direction. Pacing was perfect for me. Action Sequences were also very good. Great cast. Mark Wahlberg was very good in it. But apart from Wahlberg others (John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, J.K Simmons) did not get a chance to shine that much in this movie. (I hate it when J.K Simmons fades away in the blurry background . He was great in the gun fire sequence though.) I believe this movie was focused more on the incident and less on particular characters.
I don't think this movie has much of a replay value though as the characters were not that interesting and that is the only issue I have. Apart from that I think it is a fantastic movie. I am going to give it an A.

It's around 40 minutes in where the daughter who is so enamored with the guest wakes up, hears bits of a call he's making, and instantly becomes the skeptical investigative type that within moments contacts the military and sends the movie a thousand miles away. It happens kind of out of nowhere. Ya know, a typical movie would've maybe shown the characters it would introduce later early on, even cryptically (picking through the ashes of the fire the guest used to escape), so it didn't feel abrupt when the movie took it that direction. The least they could've done is made the girl skeptical from the beginning so her shift in character didn't feel like such a forced plot device.
It's not even just a plotting or pacing issue, because the movie then begins the first of several tonal changes. It goes from some localized, tense thriller to an over the top shoot em up, later to an extremely contrived slasher. It just feels like all of this could've been handled in a better way.
Also, maybe it's because I'm kind of familiar with the 80s revival in EDM that it's so familiar. Kavinsky, the guy who got launched from Drive, kind of kicked off a trend of "retrowave" that focused on 80s synth work. That makes this score inseparable because it's still within that relatively narrow genre. I didn't think the score was especially well used either. Just kind of thrown in all over the place, most of the time where it didn't compliment the scene so much as draw attention as to what significance they intended for it to have. Just kind of puzzling.
Anyways, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm down for friendly discussion, but I don't think anybody needs to change anybody's mind. I'm sure I adore plenty of movies that you despise. That's what's beautiful about art. :)

Agreed but (wrapped in tags just in case)
Agreed but he was still moaning like a kid whilst she was washing his wounds despite being all arrogant and nasty before the curse, also he is all giddy and childish when deciding what to wear for dinner, despite years of rage, injustice and bitterness. I don't want them to rewrite the whole thing just make some of it a bit more realistic,
