6.8/10. It is wonderfully acted. The songs are great. Didn't realize Lady Gaga could act so well. Apart from a few scenes. But the movie just doesn't have that zing! It might still win the Oscars, but I will be disappointed if it did!

6.5/10. It is great thriller. But not quite Oscar material in any category!

All in all, The Favourite is still my favourite.

Indian film about greed and a god living under an abandoned temple. It looks stunningly good but is otherwise quite average. Worth a look for the visual alone though.

‘The Old Man & The Gun’ is merely a hair trigger away from getting a higher grade and honestly I’m in doubt of whether it should receive it after all? I genuinely long after more laid-back low-budget films, which isn't made to accomplish anything grand - and watching a film like this accomplish exactly that is a lovely thing to witness, as long as everything around it works its wonders... and this one pretty much does.

The film is like its characters and the characters are like their actors - a bit old, rough around the edges, but very elegant and charming. It might remind you of something you’ve stumbled upon before but there’s so much life on screen that it’s just too hard to resist. And it’s not just the life that is but also the life that was. And you feel that. You feel the time and tear that has happened before the story starts and thereby you automatically settle in. As an audience you enter this neat little time pocket where the life of these old souls feels worthy and not weary of our time. The backdrop is equally inviting and so is the almost inconceivable 60s and 70s feel this film captures so beautifully... complete with 16mm film and all.

Of course, a lot of the credit has to go to the actors and actresses who sell the movie amazingly by almost not acting. In many ways, this is a film where there’s room to breathe - both for us and the characters, and most importantly, for those who play them. You feel their presence, you enjoy their company and you admire them every step of the way.

This is a charming little film that moves along in a pace that fits the phase of the character and actor, here especially referring to Mr. Robert Redford, who transcends wonderfully and wistfully into the very role that sends him respectfully into retirement with a smile... on both his face and mine.

Last night, I was planning to watch The Passion of Christ after this one, but I was impressed, and so speachless, in a state of full reflex, that I couldn't watch another film.
Will rewatch again tonight, cause I believe I was too amazed to pay attention in every shot.

PADDINGTON 2

Pat yourself on the back, Paul King, you struck golden marmelade by the masses (or by the molasses), which sticks to heart and soul no matter how hard you resist. And why should you? In many ways, that is the only potential flaw that sticks out in this film - it's sugary sweet and a family movie with a capital F. The film itself, though, is very far from an F...

I genuinely can't fault the film for its almost uncriticizable confidence in material and style and the cunningly captivating charm and self awareness, which just oozes on without end in this superior sequel. I enjoyed the first film, but I feel like this bear adventure is less banal and takes more time to explore its potential. 'Paddington' was a cascade of comedic outcomes for our little hat-bearing bear, but it also felt a lot like the easy way out. In the sequel Paddington is already settled in well with the world and the people around him, which makes for a nice stepping stone to more elaborate character development - and especially for the family he lives with, who gets a lot of screen time, which was very welcomed.

The story is filled with set-ups and pay-offs, the visuals are wonderfully wacky but well executed and the feeling is so fuzzy it's almost unbearable. The actors and actresses all deliver what is needed and wanted of them and some even a bit more than that. Let's talk about Hugh Grant for a second. I think this is the role he was born to play, ladies and gentlemen. What a show he puts on, but perfectly balanced between an actor proving his craftsmanship and an actor jumping ship. I loved it. The returning cast are no cast aways either, and as I said, gets even more to do here. Brendan Gleeson is awesome as well and this second time around the marmelade jar is anything but jarring but rather cheering and warmer than a bearhug.

I might have shed a little tear at the end to be honest. 'Paddington' is a ton of fun and 'Paddington 2' is too... perhaps even more so.

The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)

rating_2_5

Im a complete sucker for home invasion films, they're probably my favourite sub-genre with The Strangers (2008) quite high up my best of list. Baring that in mind, I had high hopes for this despite its mostly negative reviews as a lot of these films dont get a great rating. Unfortunately this was quite a let down, with the most annoying characters Ive watched in a while really putting in quite trrible performances. It does have a couple of fun scenes, including the swimming pool scene and a decent 80's soundtrack helps quite a bit. I really love the masks though, they would be terrifying in a real home invasion!

With the horror countdown coming up you could check out the following if interested, The Strangers, You're Next, Wait Until Dark, Straw Dogs, High Tension, Funny Games, Kidnapped, The Collector, Inside, Them, Sleep Tight, The Desperate Hours, Angst, Last House On Left. Most should have horror tags.

3.5: If you like films like Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects, then you will like this one. Revolves around a Texas-based militia group being interrogated by one of their own, an ex-cop, when a shooting at a funeral occurs and the weapon used was that of one of the militia. Great performances by James Badge Dale, Happy Anderson, and Chris Mulkey.

We see how ridiculous these people are throughout the film and keep telling ourselves how for we've come since the early 70's, only to be shown how little we've actually progressed as we witness a car rundown people in a protest and a man sitting in a white house not bothering to condemn such actions.

3.3 IMDb, 6% Rotten Romatoes, 1% Metacritic, this is not the Jason Statham movie of the same name and year. The Last House on the Left was a remake, has a remake, and inspired many movies. This particular movie just flat out and blatantly steals from it. It has low production value and I would not recommend it to anyone, and yet I enjoyed it. There are many low budget movies that try to shock but fail. This one somehow succeeds and I'm surprised it's on YouTube. Nasty and ugly, it does star Kevin Gage who has had a decent career.

Don’t know right away that I liked this one more than A Face in the Crowd. I guess it hits closer to home, what with the title character being much more one-dimensional, vulgar, the lack of catharsis and the superficial element of modernity.

Really, I’m left to wonder if an empty feeling is exactly the right thing a movie ought to strive towards leaving it’s audience with these days.

Exploitation job, it had a few good things going for it, mainly the 2 actresses who are sisters (in real life). Story gets along at a decent pace, and, I'm gonna be honest, the nudity made it and isn't badly done. 6/10

I saw this before, just wanted to watch something. I chose this because I liked Rachel, and I loved her narration.
...
I agree. Rachel, Rachel (1968) was a superb movie, whose theme and story were unusual for its time. Joanne Woodward was perfect for the part, and her portrayal got her an Oscar nomination.

It was a simple but psychologically revealing film with an uplifting ending, which they don't make many of today.

6/10.
I lost interest in this series a long time ago (when the Earth was green, there were more kinds of animals than you've ever seen:scream: ... Irish Rovers).
I just watch it for the dinosaurs. They still can't figure out that people wouldn't be able to hide 6 feet away from a dinosaur, because the dino's sense of smell is too good for that.
The movie borrows heavily from previous installments in the franchise, particularly the first two movies - moving from homage to lack of original ideas.
I wish this franchise would go extinct.

This one was a hard one to grade...I didn't particularly like the way the movie was shot from a timelapse standpoint, making it difficult to follow what time period we were in for the boy's life. Also though it's based on a true story, there isn't much of a conclusion (yet). And I don't think I will be rewatching this one any time soon, and it's because the emotional rollercoaster this movie takes you on is too close to reality. There were multiple times where I was smiling to quickly turn to tearing up because of the momentous impact this kid was having on his own and other's lives. The acting was excellent, though I laughed at Carell a time or two when he was trying to be serious because it reminds me too much of his more comedic roles.

Hard one to grade...I have a sibling that has gone through similar experiences though not quite this severe so it touched home a little there....it's hard to watch knowing that there are so many families out there going through this for real, largely unnoticed....

This is like a rated R Lifetime movie with a side of horror. It's not a comedy but yet it's very funny. Campy but not too campy, with a couple of very entertaining performances, it also features a young Bill Paxton. It was one of the video nasties which I would say was unwarranted. It's a fun watch. Dumb title though.

I agree with your rating. Good acting all around, especially from Jeff Bridges, John Hamm and Lewis Pullman. Chris Hemsworth was too good looking for the part, and seemed more like a motivational speaker than a Manson type character. Cynthia Erivo did a nice job, but her character made her seem like someone hired for their singing abilities who also had to act.

In a film in the vein of Wes Anderson or even Tarantino (without the gore fetish) there's no compelling reason to expect logic or reality, but several of the scenes or situations felt incongruous. How can a perfectly operational hotel/motel on Lake Tahoe have only the characters in the plot as guests? And later, how can such large fires in the hotel lounge not quickly spread to the entire interior? Also the Mansonesque character was not necessary, and seemed over the top. The guy could have just been a dominating criminal type.

Ironically the hotel was modeled on the Cal-Neva Lodge which is in Crystal Bay on Lake Tahoe, sitting squarely on the state line. But in the late '60s when the story took place, the hotel was very popular, especially with the Hollywood and Sinatra crowd.

However the movie provided an attention holding story, along with some interesting twists and a gratifying ending. We'll be on the lookout for some more Drew Goddard films.

If you could ask the universe for anything you wanted the last thing you would ask was randomness, freewill because of the rush of nothing being predestinated and that's exactly what you have. Some cultures/religions consider that we are all Gods because of that fact, and if we start from that realization, that we are a God, we can't make mistakes ; Every path is the right path. Everything could've been anything else. And it would have just as much meaning. This movie shows the beautifulness of our freewill as a specie. In terms of message, one of my favorite movies.

Hard to Be a God (2013)

Like nothing Ive ever watched before, thats for sure! It felt like Tarkovsky, Jodorowsky and Gilliam all making a film together whilst on some kind of halucinogenic! No coincidence here that its based on the book Roadside Picnic, which in turn was made into Stalker by none other than Tarkovsky. Its a sci-fi, where scientists travel to this planet which is stuck in the middle ages. I had heard that it was relatively disturbing, which its not, certainly not visually speaking anyway. It does not shy away from bodily fluid, mud and filth though, in fact, it has it in abundance.

I will say that the film technically is quite brilliant, spectacular even in parts. The costumes and setup were amazing and its shot gorgeously in black and white.

However, it is literally constant filith from start to finish and despite an easy to follow storyline, the dialogue at (most) times totally rambles. Considering the film lasts close to 3 hours, its by no means an easy film to watch.

Glad I did watch but certainly wont watch again.

Not a film I expect anyone here to like. If you're a teenage girl you'll probably love this. It lacks any kind of genuine scare and you'd think there would be more blood involved, but for a neutered PG-13 horror film it's okay. I'd like to see a ramped up R version, then you'd get more creativity in the deaths.

Chalament is outstanding here. The same as Carell and the second one was huge surprise for me.

Chalamet was great but I thought Carrell was very average.....he didn't nail the high drama at all. Just had that vacant expression.
I can't agree. I think he was perfectly balanced. We meet his character, when his son has been already addicted, so the father tried to find stabitility between helping the son and the rest of his family.

There are complaints I could make about this because I do think it fell short of it's potential, but there was a lot that I liked about it. I thought all of the actors offered something whether it was through their performances or their characters. It reminded me a little of The Pawnshop Chronicles, another movie that I probably liked more than I should have. The soundtrack was an enormous asset.

Sunset Strip (2012)

Record reckoning the passage from the more glamorous stages of the Strip in LA, sophistication lost, landmarks, and changing of culture. Sightings from Hugh Hefner, Dan Aykroyd, Mickey Rourke, Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, Sharon Stone along with mentions of Judy Garland, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Pryor, John Belushi, and I'd enjoy more had they given more TIME ('steada the wrong kind) to the RIGHT kind of 80s FUN metal. Therefore an 80s fun metal song I like, and in a real underground kinda way, I'm linking to it. You're a dinosaur, if you're not breaking new ground.

Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski (2018)

Considered by many to be the greatest sculptor of the 20th Century, the lion's share of Stanislav Szukalski's (sue-cull-skee) unsold work was destroyed in a Nazi bombing raid of Warsaw, Poland in 1939. Having traveled to the U.S. before and with U.S. citizenship from a prior marriage, Szukalski and his current wife moved to the U.S. permanently after the bombing, eventually settling in Burbank. Not having the name recognition that he did in Europe he gradually drifted into obscurity.

In 1971 his presence was accidentally discovered by the actor Glenn Bray, and was soon surrounded and promoted by some of the artists of the day. The group included George DiCaprio. George and his son Leonardo (the actor) eventually produced this captivating documentary.

This is a unique find. It's as if DaVinci were recently discovered, along with all his writings, teaching and that much of his work became available.

Perhaps Ms. M would like to comment on this greatest of sculptors who was Polish.

Available on Netflix and streaming services. Doc's rating: 9/10

Probably my favourite silent movie, well it would be up there anyway. The fact that this is approaching 100 years old is totally mind-boggling! I'm sure when this was released it totally blew everyones mind. Such a great but tragic story and the imagery is amazing, so ahead of its time.

Not that it means much but the director, Victor Sjostrom is Prof. Borg from Bergman's Wild Strawberries.

Would be great to see this in the Horror list.

Another example of how video games do not make for good source material.

I have yet to see The Rock in a good live-action movie, which is ironic considering he's the top-earning actor in Hollywood.

Revenger (Lee Seung-Won, 2018): Korean action film that debuted on Netflix last week stars martial arts ace Bruce Khan as Yul, a former cop who learned his deadliest enemy is in charge of a prison in an isolated island. He heads to the island in order to kill the enemy, Khun, to avenge the death of his wife and child. The plot is simple, but the action sequences are the star here, showcasing Khan, at 51 years old, in top form as he fights and hacks his way towards Khun's goons, all leading to an amazing showdown between Yul and Khun.

Wow, the stronger character in this film, is Anakin's mother, who send her son with a unknown man (for the best of the kid, of course) but without a single emotion! Strong character!

That race is so boring that makes Fast and Furious look good...

A waste of Darth Maul, the only interesting character in this film.

Oh man, what about Jar Jar Binks...

The good thing about this movie is... well, the fight in the end (Obi-wan and Qui-Gon vs Maul) was good, but the battle between the armies in the fields, boring Anakin in space and boring Padmé in the palace killed it.

Creed II 3

It's a good film, but had this been Drago I and they didn't have all the extra superfluous stuff in there this could have been a classic. I'm not that mad because Tessa Thompson is always very strong and did a lot of the heavy lifting with the personal stuff. However the Drago stuff was entirely more compelling and that's where the story should have been.

If Stallone had more restraint and gave everyone the same amount of screentime and character arc he gave himself, this would have been another 5 star Rocky movie (I gave Creed 5 stars). Viktor is practically a silent figure in the film and yet so many of the emotional hits come with his character.

I remember struggling with that film at first but then gradually I got sucked into it and ended up liking it. Films like this require patience and being in the right mood - something I, too, can't always muster, admittedly - but I've found giving a tough movie a chance often pays off in the end. Not always, though.

Bill Cunningham: New York (2010), Directed by Richard Press.

This is a captivating documentary about the famous, intrepid, eccentric and good-natured photographer Bill Cunningham, who for 40 years took "street fashion" photographs which were published weekly in the NY Times.

His fashion subjects ranged from high brow to low brow and everything in between, nearly always capturing his candid photos amongst the hustle and bustle of the city-- oftentimes without the subjects awareness. He was known throughout the industry and the city, and counted among his friends some of the movers and shakers of NYC, and many of its celebrities.

Bill is pictured at the top left in the poster in an iconic pose, showing a typical method he used to get a photo. He was an unassuming man, and along with his age, almost never resulted in people objecting to his photographing them. In fact some of the fashion conscious always tried to seek him out. Some celebrities admitted that they "dressed for Bill".

A very enjoyable 90 minutes. Doc's rating: 8/10

Hostiles - 6 or 7 out of 10.

Ran in with low desires, didn't see the trailer and didn't realize it existed until GF called attention to out at the theater.

The story was what you'd expect from a western, wasn't appallingly unique. Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike made it worth the ticket cost, astonishing exhibitions by both. One of Bales better exhibitions of his profession (not THE best, but rather its one of them).

Extraordinary acting, incredible melodic score, extraordinary cinematography.

This was an awesome under the radar Spanish flick recommended by The Samoan Lawyer. It's eligible for the horror countdown but I won't vote for it because I consider it a thriller and I'm a bitch with genres. I wouldn't want to say anything about it except that it should be seen by many more.

'Piercing' (2019)

https://www.joblo.com/assets/images/joblo/news/2018/12/Piercing-trailer-thumb.jpg

Woah. Gruesome but fun. Set design amazing. Editing (both visual and sound) very impressive. The whole atmosphere is like a 1980s from a different dimension that includes 80s style appartments but with futuristic tech. I could sense a bit of Park Chan Wook in it, and Mia Wasikowska was excellent. There is a bit of ambiguity in the whole "plot" - with a few puzzling sequences hinting at the nature of the character's actions.

It did feel a little rushed at the end and I don't think it was quite as good as Pesce's first effort 'The eyes of My Mother' but it was definitely interesting.

Paris Belongs to Us - 7/10
First off, I went into this not knowing anything more than the title and the year it was released... I went on my Watchlist and wanted something French from around 1960.. Not knowing this was a mystery, I wasn't paying extra attention, and my mind tended to drift along with the themes. I haven't seen a good mystery in about 20 years, when I saw "The Usual Suspects"... This was filmed in 1958, and it was funny hearing a background conversation in English, where a guy says, "I don't think Nixon is experienced enough. He's not independent. He's not likable" (with inaudible stuff in between), which is ironic, considering it was the knock on JFK (and his youth, also ironic considering that Nixon was only four years older).

Wouldn't decribe it as hilarious but certainly had its moments. I could watch both Stanfield (best caracter in Atlanta) and Tessa Thompson all day long and Hammer as well was great in his role. This is about guys that climb mountains without ropes, and rather than just go general the focus is one one climber (Alex) and one climb. Alex is clearly on the "spectrum" but the film encapsulates his life so well and the people around him that it's not just about the climb, the human story works as well.

Overrated. Awesome fight scenes, but the rest of the movie, frankly, sucked. Poorly written and directed, some awfully cheesy/boring scenes and stilted, over the top acting (ugh, that romantic scene...). Don't get me wrong, I think Bruce Lee is a great icon and amazing athlete but none of his movies have struck me as outstanding pieces of filmmaking. Having recently revisited a bunch of Jackie Chan movies, as well as the Fist of Legend with Jet Li, I can safely say I enjoy them a lot more.

The characters aren't developed as nearly as well as they could be to make this a more solid movie, but the plot itself is interesting enough.

Halloween (2018)

Not good! Some really poor acting in parts or should the director be blamed? Notably the mother and father (Strodes daughter). The young boy who’s being babysat. Some really poor humour - notably, the father and the boy wearing the devil costume.

A very odd twist that feels contrived and sure enough it keeps the movie rolling for a further 20 mins.

What’s good! Well beside some of the actors and dialogue breaking the immersion you can follow the plot until the odd twist. The musics also nice.

Worth watching? Not really but not the worst use of time.

This is basically a rape and revenge movie, and the poster would suggest an exploitation ala I Spit on Your Grave. It's more of a drama, and it's big problem is not knowing what it wants to be. There is a horror element but it's small and doesn't seem to fit. There's an ugly aspect to it and it seems to be trying to say something about men, or maybe women? This brings upon negative feelings which is at least better than no feeling at all. Terrible title.

Film about the struggles of a young girl when she's caught up in an all-too-common incident whereby undue Police aggression results in a tragedy. An uncomfortable watch and 2 sides as always. The underpinning battle always that of the Mother wanting to move from the Garden Heights to better the chances of her kids and ex-Lord Kings gang-member Mavericks insistence that they stay and try and improve the neighborhood.

Well acted all-round and not too preachy 8/10.

Such a depressing documentary. I don't normally get "depressed" by watching films. But this made me feel sad that our culture is so heavily based on the age of social media - that they are so hung up on how many likes they are going to get from posting a picture of themselves with Ja Rule on a beach, that they would risk thousands.

Pretty much everyone involved with the festival (apart from the Bahamian locals) is a grade A ****.

100% correct. Cant really fault the documentay that much. Its the nature of the material and the people involved that make it so difficult to watch. So many times I felt like throwing my glass at the tv screen just because of these idiots. Sad times we live in.

Hotel America - 7.5/10
Movie about relationships and romance. Pretty good.

"Hôtel des Amériques quickly establishes the free-flowing narrative structure that Téchiné has become known for. Hélène and Gilles' relationship does not follow the conventional path of romantic films, instead carrying the unpredictability of real romantic struggles. Téchiné allowed his actors to improvise during shooting, and this lends the scenes spontaneity and a natural sense of awkwardness."

It has it's moments but my thought was why did they even bother. It felt corny knowing I was just waiting for the final showdown with Jamie Lee. I don't think it was notable for anything.

Yeah, the title's quite weak and oversimplistic.

I think I gave the film 8.5/10 for some minor issues but I was blown away by it. I don't know whether there is an identity crisis so much as there are a few genres coexisting, with some really exciting, surprising things going on. I loved the way it was directed, with the use of music and editing. Plus, Danielle Panabaker really impressed me:

Shae's actually the scariest character, because, unlike Lu, she appears to have some empathy and yet still does hideous things. It was always fascinating to watch Panabaker playing that aberration.

Good cover – I haven't seen it before. It's almost like the 'M' is haunting him, or part of his hallucinations.

It's one of those films where what I enjoy most is seeing all the little cameos from actors like Alan Badel and "Hello I'm Derek" Jacobi :p.

This reminds me that I haven't seen The Hit for ages :), and that something I only found out recently is that Edward's brother James Fox was a child actor.

I just saw this movie.. I usually don't like assassination movies, but I gave this one a 7.5 or an 8.. The lead character was interesting, but I think they could have cut 20 minutes of it easily.

So this time I can't agree with you, matt:( I would cut more than 2 hours. I was waiting, when finally something would happen and I didn't live to see it.

I really like the cover too — Criterion covers rocks — This is the scene when he realized he's marked with the letter M in his coat.

One of my favorite actors. Killed himself and was buried about 30 hours before I was born. Just like his last movie (where he kills himself).

Ah, I see:

I didn't remember that moment so I thought the designer had superimposed a 'hand drawn' M on his shoulder, and Lorre was just looking at his own reflection in the original still. Still like it :).
