Aside from Forrest Gump, I actually went onto watch three other movies yesterday. I guess that I was just in that kind-of a mood.

Cars 2:
I think that we can all pretty well guess that this movie wasn't up to the high-standards that Pixar has been known for, at least for me. I loved Toy Story, Bug's Life, Monster's Inc, and a lot of their other movies, and I moderately enjoyed Cars for its great animation albeit average story. This movie just really didn't have a lot to offer. I realize that it made a lot of money and it also maintained a lot of the animation that I enjoyed, but the story felt so campy and unthoughtful that it really felt more like a TV animated movie. And not a good TV animated movie like Lion King 2, (which I liked) but something along the lines of Open Season 2. (I didn't even like the first one.) The movie doesn't focus around Lightning much whatsoever in favor of Mater, who is an acquired taste that I don't have. 3.0/10.0

Desperado:
From the gifted-mind of Robert Rodriguez comes the sequel to the beloved El Mariachi, which ... I have not seen. I couldn't find it, and I didn't think that the stories had much continuity with them. I will watch it down the line along with Once Upon a Time in the West, but I can't be bothered right now. Anyway, Robert Rodriguez, known for this series, along with Sin City and Spy Kids amongst other things. I thought that the first three Spy Kids movies were entertaining, especially whenever I was a kid. And I hear good things about Sin City, he also did one of the ****** Grindhouse movies and the Machete sequels that followed. So, maybe I was a little hasty when I said that he was gifted. The movie stars Antonio Banderas, who is somebody that I enjoy in small doses. The movie wasn't anything amazing, but it has some humorous moments, I liked Quinton Tarrantino's cameo in the movie, but the story itself never really clicked on an emotional level. Although, maybe that has something to do with the fact that I haven't seen the first one. 6.0/10.0

This is one of the movies that I always knew would be good, but never got around to watching, however, I must say that I never expected it to be THAT good. I mean, Jesus Christ, the movie was almost three-hours long and I was hooked from the beginning to the end. Samuel L. Jackson, perhaps, did the performance of his career, while Bruce Willis and John Travolta were no slouches at all whatsoever. I loved how the story never went in one particular direction, it didn't seem to have any long-term message except for being entertaining. And then, the end happened, and I actually found myself going ape-**** nuts for Jackson's speech at the end. Just a very good movie, probably the best that I have watched this year so far. 8.5/10.0
The Amazing Spider-Man
I hoped this won't happen but it did, only thing good in this movie is creation of "parents mystery",I guess it is a decent start of series,it was boring most of the time, best scenes were at Oscorp, part 2 will probably be a lot better,I mean from the trailer it looks like they took best parts of this movie and done them better, and ofc more of them, best part of this movie for me is that mystery, everything else was just basic.Decant movie, second one will probably be a lot better.
VERDICT: 6.5/10
I liked it, although, for me, it's only about a seven, I liked the chemistry between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield. I also like that Peter Parker felt like a new character and not a rehash of what we saw in the Sam Raimi trilogy. I, too, expect for the sequel to be much better.

Just saw District 9 as it was on the tv. Really do like this film. I just feel so sorry for Wikus and his whole situation. Does not really have a happy ending. Still hoping for a sequel! 8/10
Midnight Cowboy-Great film featuring fantastic performances by Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. I found the plot compelling, but it meandered quite a bit. But it all ends up heading towards a powerful conclusion. Definitely a classic film from the roaring 60's.

What exactly were you hoping she'd do? Use her teeth as a can opener for the other characters? Carry Matthew McConaughey and transsexual Jared Leto on her back through the hospital? Make them clothes? Run the whole f**king Dallas Buyers Club and let Ron and Rayon just sit on their asses and collect the money? God! You think all women should just be slaves, don't ya?

I watched a few films this week, one of which being There Will Be Blood. This is one of Anderson’s grittiest and most powerful works (if not his grittiest and most powerful work). It’s his crowning achievement, in my opinion (a disgustingly beautiful masterpiece). Anderson incorporates a Kubrickesque style into this film with wide-angle shots, following Daniel Day-Lewis’s character, Daniel Plainview, in various close-ups. Day-Lewis’s performance was a colossal one, alongside a brilliant Paul Dano. I’ve discussed this movie with many people and quite a few individuals agree that Day-Lewis’s best performance was as Bill “The Butcher” Cutting from Gangs of New York. I beg to differ. Bill “The Butcher” Cutting was a fantastic character, but he was a more theatrical and a more over-the-top character. Day-Lewis as Plainview, however, was a genuine and a believable performance. I have met exceedingly more individuals like Daniel Plainview than I have Bill “The Butcher” Cutting. I just don’t see that type of character in everyday life. Daniel Plainview is a person I experience constantly. He’s the politician, the businessman, the narcissistic ego-maniac running around that I'm sure we've all come across. In conclusion, There Will Be Blood is a cutthroat character study of a man behind a mask.
Sherlock Jr.-Extremely impressive stuntwork, visual effects and setpieces. The story left a bit to be desired though. Still a very impressive piece of silent cinema. 3.5

Terribly Happy (Frygtelig Lykkelig) - 2008 Danish film about a young policeman, who accidentally commits a crime and tries desperately to hush it up. This film was so many times compared with dark comedies made by Coen brothers that my expectations were probably too high. It´s not a bad film, it just lacks more plot twists to be really unforgettable. And it´s definitely more effective as psychological drama about main hero´s moral dilemmas than as dark comedy. However, I was really impressed by its atmosphere (which really is comparable to Coen brothers world) and by leading actor Jakob Cedergren´s subtle performance. 6/10

McConaughey and Leto are as spectacular as advertised and deserve any praise they get. Jennifer Garner was an interesting and risky choice for her role but she nailed it as well. This is probably not something I will watch again at this point in my life, but this is an outstanding movie with a great story.

Around this time last year, I went to the theaters and celebration for my friend and my own birthday. He was born the second, and me, the twelfth, and we went and watched a movie called Warm Bodies. The movie was surprisingly well-done, with a finely developed script, and decent characters, but it wasn't anything more than a seven, tops. It was the first movie that I saw that year. (I went onto see twenty other movies in theaters that year.)
Anyway, Lego Movie was the first movie that I saw in theaters this year, and I was expecting something enjoyable, but a seven tops. I did not expect to see one of the greatest animated movies that I have ever seen. And I am talking, better than Lion King, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and any anime that I have ever seen. The movie felt as if it took my ****** sense of humor and amplified it enough to make an actual movie. Seriously, the movie could have reasonably been called "Derp: The Movie". What made the humor special though is that it carried it with such confidence, "This is not stupid, you know why, because I said so!"
However, beside the hilarious antics that didn't need obscenity to catch a laugh, there was a heart and charm that pulled through in the movie. And it isn't as simple as a regular everyday nobody becoming something special. Is it sappy? Yes, but it's also pretty ****ing great.

It's funny. I have three friends that I would consider myself "close" to in high-school, and I turn eighteen in four days. One of them is having dinner with his girlfriends' parents, the other is going to homecoming, ... my best friend and I went to watch the Lego Movie. There was LITERALLY no adults in there that weren't with little kids. :p
I am going to go watch That Awkward Moment with my aunt tomorrow, I wanted to watch Monuments Man right after Lego Movie, but my friend didn't want to leave on a potentially bad note.

12 Years a Slave (2013, Steve McQueen)
This is a ferocious and callous depiction of the slave industry, told with both heart and candor. McQueen's vision does not seem to be hindered at all here - it adopts the same savagery approach of Hunger and the same unconcealed candidness of Shame. Considering its subject matter, this is the type of film that could have easily been plagued with sentimentality, but it stays mostly restrained throughout, never feeling like a mawkish or unduly dramatised story. From a technical standpoint, is a well-crafted piece, but to me, not the unreservedly gripping and compelling masterpiece some have claimed. It more or less met my expectations (in terms of how McQueen told the story), but I couldn't help but shake the fact that the film never felt like it stretched twelve years. Call it implausible or just ineffective, but it bothered me. Nonetheless, it is a good film - brutal, plaintive, and poignant, but nothing more than that from where I am standing. Maybe a 6.5 or a 7. This is "the" perfect Oscar film, though, especially in a time where American cinema is becoming increasingly more attentive and aware of the tragic history of the slave trade, a subject largely disregarded of prior.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/76/Nebraska_Poster.jpg/220px-Nebraska_Poster.jpg
Nebraska (2013, Alexander Payne)
A tender and human film that thrives in its simplicity. An effortless tale about trying to obtain independence and value in one's later years, Payne tells this adeptly written tale with both a remarkable deal of unfeigned fraternity and deadpan humour. The black and white photography is beautiful, furnishing the film with this sense of timelessness, but also a distinctively wretched undercurrent. It is such an undemanding and and 'steady' film that greatly impressed me on all levels, particularly Bruce Dern's performance and Payne's self-controlled presence behind the camera. It is a wonderful tale that had vague reminiscences of David Lynch's The Straight Story - a compassionate and human portrayal of seniority, told with flawed (but highly relatable) characters. It also has a lovely soundtrack. I'll give this an 8 or maybe a bit higher.

Visible World (Viditelný svet) Little known Slovak psychological drama, starring Czech actor Ivan Trojan as Oliver, a distant, introverted man, whose life is almost entirely devoted to his main hobby, which is stalking. The object of his binocular observation is beautiful young lady living across the street in seemingly happy family. Oliver remembers every detail of her daily habits and soon develops a plan how to use all these informations in order to disrupt her marriage and - hopefully - took the place of her husband at the end.
At the beginning, the story seems to be very similar to the One Hour Photo with Robin Williams, but the main character is much more rational and self-controlled here, his motivation (very slowly uncovered by mostly visual clues) is different and his behaviour less predictable. Thanks to Trojan´s hypnotic performance, the film is suspenseful and intense from the beginning to the end, even if little bit slow-paced for the standards of this century and with some unnecessarily long or repetitive scenes. Unexpectedly solid film, resembling some old fashioned suspense thrillers from the 1960s and 1970s. 8/10

The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)
For many, the movies made by Ealing Studios of England, especially in the 40's and 50's, are considered to be classic, particularly the comedies they turned out. Alec Guinness was the star of several of them. Until yesterday I had only seen one, The Man in the White Suit (also 1951 and also starring Guinness) and it was brilliant. So I had occasion to see TLHM and I loved it. The film builds slowly, but by the end has picked up such a breakneck pace that you'll want to watch it twice to catch everything. It has Guinness and co-star Stanley Holloway plotting to smuggle gold bullion out of the country, sell it, then come back rich men, hopefully undetected by the police. Needless to say, nothing goes exactly as planned. I was amused at first and howling with laughter by the end. Love, love this movie and look forward to catching more Ealing comedies.

Strange, surreal, dark and erotic. The movie definitely has multiple meanings to it. Whether the film is a condemnation or a tragic love letter to Hollywood is up for grabs, but the film does delve into dreams and fantasy versus reality. Either way I liked it better the second time around, but I still prefer Eraserhead and Blue Velvet.

It was only my second Bergman (the first one being Persona)

I would never personally call his films melodramatic. They are sentimental, but in a completely human, non-contrived manner. But many of his films are also fairly cynical and blunt, steering away completely from any sentimentality and proving to be somewhat of a cold and desolate viewing experience. Fanny and Alexander is a hauntingly beautiful work, though, with some masterful photography and almost flawless direction, so I would highly recommend that.
Out of the nineteen Bergman films I have seen, The Silence, arguably his most surreal and 'visual' tale, is my favourite. He is an incredible filmmaker and also one of the greatest screenwriters ever.

I don't think anybody in their right mind could be full heartened and honestly say that this movie was going to be anything other than mediocre. Zac Efron has always had a certain charm to him, I don't like him, but I can't deny that it's there. A certain arrogant douche-bag wit complimented by a sentimentality that underlines and undermines it. Even still, I can't help but cringe every time that I hear his name, thinking back to his days in the High-School Musical movies. I think his best years are ahead of him and I think he might actually end up being in a high-quality movie one day. To be fair, I haven't explored all of his work to proclaim that he hasn't once already. If Ashton Kutcher can do a Butterfly Effect, I think the same can be hoped for Efron.
Either way, this wasn't the time, and for the most part, this was a horribly formulaic script assisted poorly by terribly written dialogue. It's really sad whenever the only character that I enjoyed out of the movie is the one that was written to come across as an ******* and succeeds. There was so moments where I admittedly laughed, but it was for shock-value more than anything, and for the most part, it was obscenity and childishness more for the sake of it than to propel anything else forward.
The last half of the movie is a mild improvement, where it stops considerably with the ****** comedy and it's a time where it allows Efron to implement some of that charm that I was talking about. Even still, it comes too little too late, and the movie is nothing more than a 5 for me.

Just watched The Big Lebowski and will give it a rating 7/10.
What a crazy film. Perfect roles for Bridges and Goodman. Some totally wacky scenes and dream sequences provided by the Coen Brothers. Still not really sure what was going on but it was quite funny. I know it is some what of a cult classic. I think for me I may like it more and more, the more times I watch it.
Have you not seen Hour of the Wolf?
I have, and even though that is more of a horror piece, I still classify The Silence as his most visual and surreal film. Then again, it has been many years since I've seen either.

I agree with what others have said re melodramatic but I guess it depends on your definition of melodrama. Keep in mind though that he directed 50+ films so even if you avoided the ones you think will be melodramatic there will still be about 30 great films to watch.
In regards to the two you mentioned, I'd probably call C+W somewhat melodramatic, but still a great film, whilst F+A isn't, and it's something everybody should watch :)

See No Evil AKA The Blind Terror (1971) This little thriller has some poor reputation for being a rip-off of better known Wait Until Dark (1967). Both films belongs to the subgenre "women in peril" and both have a blind woman as a main character, fighting against the attacks of the villain. However, in See No Evil it´s not such equitable "cat and mouse" mind game as in the older film.
Until the very end of the story, we do not see anything more from the villain than a pair of his cowboy boots, passing across the scene of a crime. So neither the main character nor audience knows who the antagonist is and what he wants, which may be effective in some cases, but not this time. Thanks to that, the leading character (played by Mia Farrow with annoying, childlike mannerism) is doomed into a position of a totally passive victim, whose sole task in the story is to freaking out and wait until someone else comes to help her. On a positive note, the film has a very good music by Elmer Bernstein and some of the many expressive camera angles are effective in a building of a claustrophobic atmosphere. 5/10

There are actually several major innovations apparent in this scene. Though not in term of direction (it's reminiscent of Hideaki Anno, 1990's work which you don't know). Direction is the only thing you apparently understand (you don't care about the writing, design and the music, just "pure cinema" without these other "inferior" artforms interfering).
Though the "melodrama" according to your definition is more obvious in this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On4-jntBfHE

The writing in that scene is really corny - it's like from a daytime soap opera. Most of PMMM wasn't that bad so it's weird you are pointing it out - unless you want to show it is overly melodramatic.

The Conjuring
I am a big horror fan and like the feeling of getting scared. This movie offered some pretty good chills but no real major "jump" moments. I like Patrick Bateman since Insidious and he is pretty good here, Vera was also pretty good but seemed to be the clique clairvoyant. Some of the continuities seemed odd (ending scene) but overall I did enjoy it. It wasn't as memorable as the first paranormal activity to me but it is still a strong horror movie.

It's more than a "mellow film with a bittersweet ending", in my opinion. I experienced it like an intelligent and highly creative film about the disappointments of reality and how we might escape from it for a short while, but ultimately do get confronted with our frustrations with real life again and again. The last shot is a hopeful and 'bittersweet' one, though, you're right about that.
P.S. Your rating is indeed too low. :p

My rating will be misleading to some. I am particularly fond of these types of films; others may find this difficult to watch. It's dark, realistic, intense, and brutal. I watched Dallas Buyers Club on Sunday night. I thought the movie was above average. It did tend to get slightly sloppy in sections. For instance, the director, Jean-Marc Vallee, used captioning toward the end of the film to explain what happened in the story, but thirty seconds hadn't even passed before he did it again. This type of sloppiness was the only type of flaw I found in the movie. Dallas Buyers Club had a phenomenal performance from Matthew McConaughey and a bordering-spectacular performance from Jared Leto. If you haven't seen this movie, I'd recommend watching to see for yourself what a great actor Matthew McConaughey has become. I was utterly shocked when I saw it.

Brainstorm
3 +
While it may have its limitations and its flaws, this slice of 80s sci-fi is just about able to overcome those issues with the end result being a rather intriguing one. The technology at the heart of its plot allows the film to address some interesting issues and look at some interesting questions, including the biggest questions of all such as what happens when you die and is there an afterlife. Despite its 1983 release date the film still feels very much like a product of the 70s, from both its aesthetic to its narrative which is informed by the conspiracy and anti-establishment sentiments that were so prevalent during both that decade and its films. The latter occurs when the technology in question is exploited by the military for purposes of warfare, raising ethical questions about its use.
I found Brainstorm to have a slightly ponderous nature and pace which prevented me from truly getting passionate about it, but it did draw me in. And a large factor in doing so was certainly the strong cast; a cast that included Natalie Wood in her final performance having died during shooting. Particularly strong was Christopher Walken, toning down his eccentricities a touch but still maintaining his unique charisma and magnetism.
It's not often that I'm the one calling for remakes, but if Hollywood really is so set on the continuous conveyor belt of remakes/reboots/re-imagingings/whatever they're calling it this week, then I think this is the kind of project they should be looking at. Instead of remaking films that are still beloved classics such as RoboCop and Total Recall, why not a film like this? As far as I can tell it's not a particularly well-known film these days, it has an interesting premise to work from, while its reliance on computers and technology mean that it looks extremely dated these days so I don't think that updating it would be the worst thing in the world. And for once it may even be worth having it in 3D, or at least part of it. The machine that the scientists create allows for virtual reality style experiences which are supposed to be unbelievably real. So if 3D kicked in for those sequences to mimic the 'reality' I think it would be a nice touch.
The Deer Hunter
This is a great film, a flawed film but great. The performances are brilliant, there are many scenes of great power, and one can't help but feel invested in the story. The problem with the film is it's length, I feel 30 minutes or so being cut would make this a much leaner piece of film. Plus it would cut down on the often glacial pacing. Nonetheless, this is a classic of American cinema and when the inevitable Top 100 of the 70's list occurs, I'm sure this will rank very high.

I enjoy Dane Cook, I said it, do I think he's a good actor? No, from the work that I have seen of his, which includes Dan in Real Life, Good Luck Chuck, Employee of the Month, and now, My Best Friend's Girl, I have basically with full-confidence that while he may have something formidable to contribute to the cinematic arts, he hasn't tapped into it yet, or at least, I haven't seen it. However, I like his comedy, I don't laugh during it like I do during Daniel Tosh, and I don't think like I do when I watch George Carlin or Bo Burnham, but I am entertained.
He tells stories, whether they lead to a consistent punch-line is irrelevant, because for the most part, I basically enjoy the ride. He does it with enthusiasm, I guess, and every once in a while, he says a joke that I like.
Anyway,
I didn't expect much from the movie, and surprise, surprise, I didn't get much out of it. The story felt incredibly similar to Hitch, another iffy movie starring Will Smith, it was about a guy that would get paid to help low self-esteemed guys get the girls of their dreams before becoming a romantic comedy. This was about a guy that would get paid to act like a dick to the girls so that they'd "appreciate what they had," and like it, eventually became a romantic comedy.
It wasn't anything special, Jason Biggs was more annoying than sympathetic and didn't feel like he added much to the actual story, Dane Cook has a pompous confidence that I enjoy, but his acting chops are less than stellar. As for Kate Hudson, ... eh.

Sort of an anti-climax at the end. Butler plays his usual character but it was good to see Hall in a film having watched him play Dexter Morgan for 8 seasons recently. He is very interesting to watch as an actor and can play the bad/insane/psychopath guy very well.

I just watched Mulholland Drive (2001) - Wow, I can't believe I let that one slip under the radar for so long. David Lynch certainly knows how to pick leading ladies. As an aside, what a life story the actress Laura Harring has to tell - amazing! A surreal 8.5/10  (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005009/?ref_=tt_cl_t2) (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005009/?ref_=tt_cl_t2)

Purple Noon
(René Clément, 1960)
tom ripley is a talented mimic, moocher, forger and all-around criminal improviser;
but there's more to tom ripley than even he can guess
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054189/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
a good many of you probably already know, Purple Noon was remade by Hollywood in 1999 as the Talented Mr Ripley, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law & Gwyneth Paltrow. i've only seen bits and pieces of that... so i can't make a clear comparison
as for the original, i found the execution to be spot on. the character Tom Ripley, played exceptionally by Alain Delon, is pretty much the most horrible type of person. however, you the viewer are stuck right there with him, conflicted, almost rooting for him. it really feels like you, the viewer, are Tom Ripley. it's bizzare yet fascinating. he's a weird dude, and you are him. which is a testament to Delon's performance. one that launched him to stardom in the 1960's. it's also a testament to Clément's ability as a storyteller/director
i got ahold of this film as an appetizer, before viewing le Samouraï - also starring Delon. which i should get around to soon. surprised i hadn't heard of Purple Noon prior to some research a few days back when looking through Delon's credits. why does this only have 6,576 user votes on IMDb, to the Talented Mr Ripley's 108,451? maybe it's just the title that's the problem... -Purple Noon- not exceptionally catchy or memorable. although it even has a Nino Rota soundtrack, predating his work on the music for the Godfather. it's got a great leading performance, the supporting actors are great, it's well-directed, & the Mediterranean settings are dazzling. it's just a beautifully weird film
3.5++
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYuehMmXPs0
I like it more than Le Samourai, but I'm a heathen. Nino Rota was Fellini's regular composer long before The Godfather, but he did tons of other scores.

Pleasantly surprised with this movie. Had little expectations going in (had no idea what the film was about) so that worked out well. Cage's acting is superb and the film is awesomely shot. Great visuals and scenery constantly on display. The movie's paced extremely well and feels high budget. Awesome movie I'll definitely go back to in the future.

I watched Movie 43 today. Has anyone else seen this?
I thought it was terrible. Just terrible. Not funny just odd. A huge cast of experienced and well known actors but I just did not get it at all, maybe it was just me?
Debating between 3 or 4 / 10
Naked-Character study of an extremely flawed individual who constantly wanders from place to place, never finding himself a home. I tried to love the movie, but I couldn't. I simply could not relate or emphasize for the protagonist in the slightest. He's arrogant, narcissistic, and he never learns from his mistakes. Maybe thats the point of it all, but it's keeping me from calling the film great. It's a 3.5. Good, but It could have been something much, much more.

Great movie about the difficulties of very different individuals in having a relationship. Filmed in Shanghai and most of the people you see in the street are Asians, shows how we view the future from the perspective of 2013, just like 2001 showed the future from the perspective of 1968.

I watched Hitchcock for the first time last night and I found the film to be immensely enjoyable; however, the movie probably won't make it into my top two-hundred any time soon. What I liked about this film was the writing. Basically, John J. McLaughlin adapted the book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho into a feature film screenplay; yet he did it in such a way that captures the audience's attention and leaves them guessing for more. The directing too was excellent. There were a few moments where I was wondering why the director, Sacha Gervasi, executed certain techniques, but if you overlook these minor flaws, you can definitely perceive what an excellent job he did on the film. Finally, the amazing Anthony Hopkins portrays Alfred Hitchcock and, once again, delivers a stunning performance. I don't think there's any roll Hopkins can't play exceedingly well. If it weren't for Hopkins, I'm not sure the film wouldn't be as powerful as it is.

The Mad Room (1969) Obscure little thriller, starring Shelley Winters as wealthy widow and Stella Stevens as her secretary and future daughter-in-law, seemingly belongs to the "grande-dame-guignol" genre. Actually it´s more a traditional whodunit with supposedly twisted (in fact, silly and very predictable) ending and just a few of these grotesque grande guignol moments. The plot revolves around Stevens´ teenage nephew and niece, who spent the last twelve years in a mental institution after they were suspected of the brutal murder of their parents. Now they are going to live with the two ladies mentioned above and it does not take long before a new murder is commited. Winters, who was the main reason for my interest in this film, spend less time in it than i hoped. The rest of the cast was unfortuantelly far behind her in terms of charisma and in some cases somewhat unsuitable for their parts. Especially Barbara Sammeth, who played Stevens´ 16 year old niece and actually looked like 30-something woman trying to play a naive half-child. Which was creepy, but not in the right way. 4/10

Midnight Run (1988, Martin Brest)
An endlessly entertaining blast, thanks in large part to its magnetic and charismatic screen presence, offered exclusively by the great Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. Cogently written and directed, this film never caused any ennui or indifference from where I was sitting. It was exceedingly consistent and well-paced throughout, not to mention having a tuneful soundtrack and some quotable dialogue. I just sat back, switched the brain off after a long week and had fun with it - exactly what Brest's film was designed to do. It also demonstrates that De Niro, if given the proper material, can transcend remarkably well in the comedy genre. Sure, it is no masterpiece, but if one is seeking fun, almost in the veins of Planes, Trains and Automobiles meets Sideways with a bit of shooting and car chasing in between, look no further than this.

I think it's hard to switch back and forth from action to comedy effectively. Midnight Run is one of the best at doing it.

This film was so bleak it's scary. It's as though God punished the people in the film, and made them pay for the terrible things they might have done during their lives. It's kinda like The Straight Story meets Eraserhead, although I'm probably exaggerating a little, since nothing about this film is surreal at all. But you get the idea.

I was going to watch the 1987 RoboCop movie for the first time, then watch the remake in theaters after, but unfortunately, the weather kept that from happening. I ended up having to go to an early showing in fear that the weather would get worse, and so, while it may be a sin, I have seen the remake without seeing the original. I won't give a long-winded review about the movie yet, but I will say this.
The action-scenes were very entertaining, Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson both did particularly well in their roles, with Jackson being absolutely hilarious, and while I am sure that a lot of the grounds were already footed in the original, I thought it was a smarter-type of action flick that asked a lot of real questions and actually made you think. I was expecting a low four, but ended up getting a low-seven, that's always nice.
The special-effects were also really well-done and if the box-office gross allows it, I think I'd be okay with seeing an original sequel down the line, maybe have Robo go after a guy that works outside of Detroit's district and is skilled at his craft, as opposed to a "big boss" kind-of character.

Going into this film I really wasn't expecting to love it or even enjoy it. It has been a long time since I have watched the TV program Sex & The City and I did wonder if my opinion as a somewhat snobnosed critic that I know I can be would damage my idea of the film. This film breaks these rules. This is a film that if you take away the shoes, the dresses & the makeup is just a story of something we all want, someone to have, someone to hold, someone to love.
A very deserving 9 out of 10 from me.

I loved every second of this warm and wonderfully humane film. Bruce Dern is absolutely brilliant in it and I actually wouldn't mind if he got the Oscar. I'm saying this as a huge Leo supporter. Dern completely nailed it.
I also really liked the music score.
Another awesome film from Alexander Payne and one of my personal favorites of 2013.

Nebraska is warm and wonderfully humane? It's an extremely cold movie full of characters that cannot stand the sight of each other, and who hate their own existence. It's basically The Straight Story meets Eraserhead minus the surrealism and the Lynch weirdness.

Not at all. It's a pretty sad film (in a way) and its message can be seen as a very cruel one, but it's definitely NOT a cold film.
The film has a huge heart and it always keeps ticking throughout, even during the most despicable moments.
The relationship between father and son was subtle but very tender and, for me, was the real core of this film. The unconditional love from the son's side is heartwarming.
I laughed out loud at Nebraska more than I did at some of last year's better thought-of comedies. The ending is certainly sweet and uplifting. I certainly don't understand your comparison to the Lynch films. It's in B&W, so what?

It's not a sad film at all, for me. I didn't find its message to be cruel either, really, and yes, to me it's a very cold film, and a dreary one. I liked the relationship between the father and the son, but what about the rest of the relationships? What about Bruce Dern's relationship with his brother, or his son's relationship with his cousins. Or his wife's relationship with the rest of his family?
And the scenes when the family has dinner in a restaurant full of miserable, old people. How depressing is that? Nebraska was anything but a heartwarming movie for me. I found it to be an effective film, largely thanks to its b&w photography, but for entirely different reasons it seems.

It's a very similar film to The Straight Story for obvious reasons, although that was a heartwarming experience, this certainly wasn't. And it's a bit similar to Eraserhead since they're both cinematic depictions of hell.

That's Alexander Payne's biggest talent probably. He finds beauty and sometimes even magic in the most terrible situations, while still keeping the story's feet on the ground and staying on a realistic level. It's extremely effective when he succeeds.

Extremely cold? Not in the least. I could not disagree with you more. As the film has flawed and often detached characters (most of which possessing a particularly cynical undercurrent to them), at its core, it is a remarkably human and real depiction of seniority in a rural and desolate American town. Woody is the encapsulation of the troubled and misunderstood - a man who is trying to seek independance and context in the later years of his life. He is painted as a flawed yet cordial man whose personal problems and demons primarily derived from his traumatic years in Korea. He is charitable and goodhearted, but unfairly ridiculed by his critical (albeit well-intended) wife and, at times, unfairly misunderstood by his two sons.
Like The Straight Story, the protagonists have problems. They are flawed and far from perfect. But that's life. The film, to me, is about revealing the humanity of these people, through all their problems. It is a soulful and profoundly human examination of a seemingly wanderless man gaining meaning in his ostracised and empty life. It is beautiful, but hardly sentimental - perhaps it was its deadpan and restrained humour that made the film feel cold to you, because, as the last sequence would suggest (not to mention various other scenes) it is anything but.

@Mark: Yeah, I forgot to mention that it was outrageously funny too, again thanks to Bruce Dern's brilliant performance.

It's a film about the fall of the American dream, so in that sense, its message is kind of sad. I don't see what's so bad about the relationship between Bruce Dern's character and his brothers or his wife's relationship with the rest of the family. I don't think there was anything unusual there. The cousins were just a couple of douchebags. Nothing hell-like to me, though.

Why were they miserable? They were old, but they never seemed truly miserable to me. They were just being casual, which is fine.

Depictions of hell? Hell mustn't be so bad then if there is so much love and caring.
Battleship Potemkin-3.5. Impressive for the time, but it's rather dull and uninteresting now. The Odessa shootout scene was brilliant though.

So much love? Seriously, did I watch a different film or what? Of course a son will take care of his old man, that is unless he's a complete douche.
Alexander Payne effectively portrayed the emptiness and the uneventful lives of the characters in the movie, through the winter backdrop and the empty streets of the town. Had it been a heartwarming film, it would have been in color and with the sun shining in every scene. But it wasn't, because it was the opposite of that.
I'm seriously thinking y'all missed the point of this movie. Either that or I suffer from major depressive disorder, or something.

This is precisely why this film is one of understanding and humaneness. Unlike most films, Nebraska does not conventionally depict a jovial family. It depicts one that has fragmented and disintegrated over the years, much like the dismal and stark small town, and much like reality in general. This, however, should not correlate with the notion that the story is one of cruelness and cynicism. A cruel story is one that deliberately is savage to its character. Payne's film, at least to me, does no such thing. It simply shows a rather fractured, disconnected family, and it did so in a very amusing manner, as the film has some fantastic deadpan humour.
This is an endearing and considerable slice of storytelling.

Many, many films in history disagree with this assertion. I can think of numerous pieces that show beauty in places of turmoil, desolation, and despondency.
Payne grew up in Nebraska and had said he always wanted to explore its more rural side. He also elected to shoot in black and white photography not to convey any world-weary themes, but because he has always had a love for it.
I see Nebraska as a human (but often realistic) tale of goodness and virtue in the midst of a near-broken city. And using an ostracised and seemingly empty and misunderstood senior as your character to tell such a story is indicative of its brilliant writing.

Yeah, because black and white films can't have a certain warmth to them...
Of course there was emptiness and disappointment in the story, but I can't see how you missed the wonderfully tender aspect of the whole film.

It's not about getting the point. We all saw the more pessimistic elements of the film. I just don't get how you can't see that Payne is gradually lifting everything above that seemingly "cold environment" and shows us something more meaningful in this film.

Yo, let's agree to disagree then. I'm probably sounding like I strongly disliked the movie, but I didn't. I liked it although for different reasons, obviously.
Anyways, earlier I watched another movie that kinda depicts hell, too. It reminded me of Barton Fink in some ways... insanity caused by aloneness and isolation, presented rather weirdly by Roman Polanski who is also the lead character. Or was it heartwarming?

I enjoyed the film, it was really well made and all, but there was 2 things that bothered me. 1st the over sentimental picture showing at the beginning, it's cliché we've all seen it before please be original. 2nd in a movie which happened in real life it's not normal to have a 45 minutes or so action sequence where 5 or 6 guyz defend themselves against 200 armed men. In Terminator or Rambo I understand because it's a story, but not in that film. I'm being very negative, but I still really liked the film, other from these 2 things it was a solid 8/10

That was a great film. Not an easy one to understand in it's entirety, but still a film that makes you feel emotions and ask yourself some question. The acting performance is absolutely incredible by Jeong-hie Yun. I don't want to spoil so the only thing I'll say is that her characterisation is fantastic. The other thing that I loved about the film is it's visual beauty. It says to us even though theres a lot of bad, evil things happening in this world there's always beauty and hope.

Let Me In - For those that don't know, in 2008, there was a Swedish film called Let The Right One In that garnered critical acclaim from critics. And it was proclaimed to have been a movie adaptation for the book of the same name. In-reality, it was a very loose adaptation, in that, they briefly touched on what Eli was, but didn't really disclose what was said in the book.
Eli is male and was castrated but was also an absolute prick in-general unlike the more lovable variation that we got in the movies. Not only that, but there's a lot of other things like child prostitution detailed in the book that didn't find way in the movie. Thankfully, if you ask me.
I was sincerely expecting to enjoy the 2010 adaptation more than the Swedish version as I was hoping that they'd bring a different outlook on the characters. There's a lot of personality that wasn't seized in Let The Right One In, but instead, it was an absolute shot-by-shot remake of the movie, and not really much of an adaptation of the book. Even still, Chloe Grace Moretz is an actress that I always find myself enjoying, and the story is an intriguing one. What I will say though is that Let Me In's Owen and Abby don't have the chemistry of Let The Right One In's Oskar and Eli.
Neither movie is great, but both movies are good, but I enjoyed the Swedish version more. The differences are marginal enough to assume that I would have liked which ever one that I saw first better, as neither particularly does a better job at getting things across than the other.

Rush: Wow, holy ****, this movie wasn't supposed to be this good, what the **** were they thinking!? Jesus Christ, this movie left me absolutely astonished because I went into it expecting something that was only remotely decent instead I found myself calling it great. Chris Hemsworth had the performance of his career so far while Daniel Bruhl did great and then some. These two characters did so well together. The characters were entirely different, but neither of them necessarily seemed like a bad guy, and oftentimes, every time that it made it seem like you were supposed to be rooting for one, you are given reason to root for the other.
By the end of it, I liked them both quite a bit. This movie was everything to racing that The Wrestler was to professional wrestling and Black Swann was to ballet.

You're Next: At the time that I first heard of this movie, it was a critical darling, and I was actually really excited to see it. However, unfortunately, it wasn't playing in a theater near me, and so, it took until now for me to finally see it. I was admittedly a little disappointed with it, but wait. I am disappointed because I was expecting something that was absolutely amazing and brilliant, but what I got wasn't bad by any means. There was a lot of acting that was over-the-top, and I do mean, really over-the-top, but I thought that the story had a lot of intriguing ideas going for it.
The violence came off well, and is even better when you consider that the movie had a budget of only one million. I would say that more or less, with some moderate tweaking, it becomes what The Purge could have been but wasn't. The twists and turns may not have been original along with the concept, but the attempts at suspense and Rube Goldberg style kills weren't in vein for me.

Nothing Left to Fear
This movie, I, uh, I never even heard of before I noticed that my aunt rented it, and honestly, I basically got what I was to expect. The movie lacked scares and much in the way of originality whatsoever, I literally predicted all of the twists before they happened, and most of the times, I thought I was joking. The religious jargon is an overused thing in horror, but this one really made me want to beat my head against the wall. The movie plays it straight through and through, but the slow-pace, lack of fright, and bland characters make it difficult to become invested in.

Jan Saudek: Trapped by His Passions, No Hope to Rescue (Jan Saudek: V pekle svých vášní, ráj v nedohlednu; 2007)
Little bit messy, but interesting documentary about eccentric Czech photographer Jan Saudek, who became famous for his ability to find beauty in sad, shocking and sometimes disgusting things. This film is trying to find the connections between the photographer´s controversial pictures and his turbulent life. Saudek experienced everything you can think of. Concentration camp imprisonment, poverty and starving, great fortune, political persecution, complicated relationships with - presumably - a thousands of women and several men, loss of his twin brother Kája Saudek (who is no less famous comic book artist, but for last 8 years he´s in a coma), suicide and drug addiction in his family... All this made him a very complicated and sad man, hiding himself behind the mask of joviality and sarcastic humour. Frankly, I don´t think that director Adolf Zika fully managed to get under that mask, but he certainly came close to do that. 7/10

By the end of it, I liked them both quite a bit. This movie was everything to racing that The Wrestler was to professional wrestling and Black Swann was to ballet.
Except that it's true. ;)

This movie was everything to racing that The Wrestler was to professional wrestling and Black Swan was to ballet.
Great to see such love for this movie. I feel like it really gets overlooked amongst the other 2013 fare. I also went into it with low expectations (being somebody who really couldn't care less about car racing of any kind) and loved it, though I was more impressed with Bruhl's performance than Hemsworth's.
One huge difference between Rush and those Aronofsky movies though is that Ron Howard has a knack for making me actually give a sh*t about his characters. Aronofsky definitely doesn't.

Bruce Almighty
I saw this film a few years ago so I knew what the story was and basically what was going to happen and to be honest this could have been any other Jim Carey film, it really doesn't matter because Jim Carey films basically fall into the same film anyway:
* He makes funny sounds
* He makes funny faces
* He learns something about himself
Tell me I am wrong please do because I would love to know if there is something deeper that I am missing but this is basically every Carey film. The only highlight was Morgan Freeman and even he I think was wasted in this film and was for Aniston? Well, she was there, so good for her for showing up!
A very low 3 out of 10

You know what I mean... A movie that looks at the dark-side of something, and the stress that comes with the profession. It just so happens that ballet, professional wrestling, and racing are the most widely respected activities.

3096 Days (3096 Tage; 2013) I never thought that a film about a psychopath who kidnaps 10 year old girl and keeps her in a secret room behind his cellar for another 8 years could be so dull. I was familiar with the Natascha Kampusch case (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natascha_Kampusch), on which is this awful German drama based, and I always thought that the most fascinating on it is Natascha´s surprisingly ambivalent, love-hate relationship with her abuser. Unfortunatelly, this film does not bring more light into this enigmatic matter. Director Sherry Hormann just aseptically illustrates what you can read on Wikipedia (actually, less than that) and does not really bother with psychologically believable character development. A distinctive performance of the main actress (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) despite an uninspired script and direction is probably the only thing I will remember from this. 4/10

Get Shorty
Growing up this was one the first films I saw with John Travolta and even back then I knew I loved him as an actor. The film is well paced, well directed has a good script and everyone knows their part. The story does suffer a little from trying to be a little complicated even though it is not but over all I can forgive that because it is a story that sucks you in and makes you want to be Chilli Palmer. It is one of those films that reminds me why I like film to begin with.
A very decent effort getting a 7 out of 10.

Watched OldBoy (2013) tonight the American remake version. Now I have not seen the original South Korean version but it is quite a disturbing story. Violence and incest are common but the mystery throughout is good albeit the story stays quite basic depth wise throughout. Did not see some of the twists and that is always good in a film but thought the acting was only average and the fighting scenes were poor.
5/10
The Godfather:This was a rewatch,what can I say...Epic acting,perfect story,atmosphere of movie is good,just perfection in every scene,dialog is awesome.
Verdict: 10/10
Justice League: Doom:Had good story, good dialog, good plot twist, action scenes were good,it shows personality of every JL character.Just all in all good movie, and yes Batman owns this movie also.
Verdict: 9/10

Just read the wikipedia page you linked to, certainly a bizzare and clearly troubled woman (even though she really just is far more analytical and humanist then most in her position). I don't have a desire to watch the movie though, especially after your negative review.

I have an idea:
Let's get a bunch of talented actors (abeit ones that are a bit past their prime) and throw them together in a sh*tty fantasy romance about angels, demons and miracles. We could call it Winter's Tale.
Oh wait, somebody already did that.

It was okay. The last story kinda dragged and ended completely ridiculously but the three previous ones were decent enough to carry the film.

I really enjoyed this one though I do wish they set it more than four years in the future from the time of release. I loved all of the POV sequences and thought the concept itself was original and interesting. Again though, I just wish it had been set in a further future time.

I usually am very hit or miss when it comes to French cinema. One on hand you have La Haine and The Passion of Joan of Arc (which I really like), and on the other you have Pierrot Le Fou (which I hated). This is a very nice in between. A good movie indeed.

Jack Nicholson brilliant as always, in this quite depressing role of a social chameleon of a man that learns of his father' illness. Some great scenes include him playing a piano on a truck and ordering chicken in a diner.

This was the best way to watch this movie because if you had seen the original you would have been contemplating shutting it off before it was finished. I honestly think if they had cast the movie better it would have been much better. I don't know but Josh Brolin just seemed out of place and his acting seemed forced like he was not comfortable in his role. It was also hard to believe 20 years had passed because Brolin looked exactly the same minus the beer gut. They should have let Sharlto Copley(which happens to be one of my new favorite actors) be his crazy over the top self but he was very reserved which is just not his acting style. This was definitely a poor remake of one of the finest Korean films ever made. Now if Aronofsky or Nolan had given Old boy a shot maybe, but they should have just left this one alone.
I concur with your 5/10 rating

No time to scroll back to see what Italian films you've seen but I like the films of Francesco Rosi. My favourite is Salvatore Giuliano, but I've also seen Three Brothers and The Mattei Affair, as well as a couple of others I can't recall at the mo. Interesting social realism

Loved the first hour or so, and then the brake scene kind of ruined it for me. I didn't like the ending either, but overall it was a really fun film.

Inconclusive. Realized half way in I am watching the R version not the NC-17 one.

It's Kind of a Funny Story
This is a film that for me sums up what a perfect film should aspire. Yes it has flaws but some of the greatest films do, in fact a lot do and to say a film not flawed is unrealistic. It does have its moments where certain parts will make you think that it just wouldn't happen in the way things have but it is still a film that has an important and good message.

I admit I was not too crazy about this movie to begin with, I am not sure extra sleaze will seal the deal.

The art of getting By
This is the second time I have watched this film and I have to admit on second viewing I could not get into it nearly as much as I could the first time around. It has all the makings of a great, quirky off the wall teenage film about a 18 year old trying to make his way in life and unable to determine how it will go but for me it just tries to hard and that is it's main downfall.

The Cook, The a thief, His Wife, Her Lover 1/10
Robocop 7/10
One was great action, the other literally had nothing to offer for me. I think you know which is which.

I guess I'll rep you for Robocop (assuming it's the original) but I feel dirty doing so.
I don't even like Robocop that much

Ergh. I wanted to like this. I quite didn't. The characters ruined it for me, although I liked the ending and the beginning of the movie.
