That’s a shame...

I saw 2001 as part of my cinematic journey when I tried to watch all the “big ones” to learn as much as possible. I gave it a 6/10 I think, moslty because it was pretty and a classic in others eyes. I could see the influence also and such. But not really for me.

Then I saw it again some time later and quite liked it. A 7-8/10 or something. Then some years later, I watched it yet again and awarded it the big 10/10.

Hmm. Maybe my expectations were to high? Just as you I watched 2001 as a classic movie and assumed my rating rather wouldn't be hailed by other people.
I also understand, why it is classic. I guess, if I had seen it in 1968 I probably would have been fascinated, as there are great "space" scenes. Also the conflict with artificial intelligence is something, what scares most of people, then and now. Anyway, I watched it this year, so it didn't make as huge impression as it would had done in 50 yeras ago.

Visually very beautiful, but its 107 minutes seemed twice as long. Took me 2 days to finish it as I kept falling asleep. I own it so was determined to finish it.
Ha:) The same happened to me. I wasn't able not to fall asleep.

Initially a good story, some good writing at times, but after the conflict, it kinda went downhill for me. I didn't like the acting, either.

Despite my rating I wouldn't call this a great movie, but that doesn't always matter when it is so affecting. I lost someone very close to me to drug addiction and I was unable to help. Watching this movie was often very hurtful and it brought me to tears. I usually root for the sad ending but that wasn't the case here. Good job by the whole cast.

Ok, so I've always liked Queen's recordings and I've read Freddie Mercury's bio on Wikipedia (like, I looked it up years ago) but I didn't know much about the band aside from that.

So is it a crime if I liked this movie? To me it's about the band's journey and little snapshots about Freddie's life along the way. This wasn't supposed to focus entirely on his private life and relationships or his later illness, instead it's the high points and a few of the low points. Basically, a sanitized version for mass consumption that you can bring the kids and grandma to watch.

I admire Mercury and I have a semi-personal connection to him in a way that I can't explain on a public forum, so yes, it would be nice to see a gritty biopic someday. If Rami Malek played him again as well, I'd be all for it.

For now, this film has just inspired me to play their music again and look for old concert footage.

aka Get Down and Boogie. Whoa, this was strange. Serena, a trike riding biker babe, is looking for her kidnapped mom. Her search leads to her uncovering a plot by the local fast food magnate (Col. Sanders look alike) who has created a cloning machine. His goal: clone African Americans to do whatever he wants them to, chief among them vote and support his racist views. That's the main story line but all kinds of crazy is interspersed. It's slapstick that peddles in stereotypes, which is fine but it doesn't always hit the right notes - except when they break out in song and dance numbers for no apparent reason. The singing is good. Dancing - not so much The recently deceased Dick Miller has a bit role as a goofy cop and Otis Day co-stars as the infectious V.D.

Harry & son (Paul Newman, 1984) is kind of impolished and could have been a little better acted, but I just don't care and I don't think it loses anything of its meaning and gravitas either way. Its flaws seem so little compared to how much it transmits and makes me feel, to the poignant sincerity it exudes in every single frame. Simply put, this movie has come to stay with me and nothing is going to take it away. 5

https://cdn1.thr.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/landscape_928x523/2018/03/jinn-122673_-_h_2018.jpg

Small budget indie about the struggles of a girl to adapt to life when her mother converts to Islam. Some of the performances are fine, and the overall message of tolerance and how we can all embrace each other's beliefs without resorting to conflict is interesting. I just found the script lacking. It was very hokey and unrealistic in places. The end sequence is especially cringeworthy in terms of a "resolution". It's a real shame as I'm convinced this is a decent subject for a movie. It just wasn't nailed.

I admire the effort from Director Nijla Mu'min. But can't recommend this one.

Need to say this because I’m passionate. The only real shame was blade 3. Blade 2 directed by Guillermo del toro is a decent film. Personally I like it more than the original. Feel it ramps up the action and coolness factor. Not problem with someone liking it less but it’s a worthy sequel - 3 is not.

I nice easy breezy movie. Nice to see Redford but at this point he seems more like the ghost of Redford. I liked Sissy Spacek, and strangely enough I found her more appealing now as an old fossil than when she was a spring chicken. Casey Affleck was great in a less intense role than usual, and it's the first time my wife liked him. The movie does a great job at capturing the era.

This is a big phony movie. Just terrible. Even the "bung-hole" telephone call (which is on YouTube) is horribly played. Where was the "Johnson Treatment"? Where were his daughters? So much inaccuracy. LBJ constantly voted against Civil Rights, until it became politically expedient to do so...

This is what you get with when a movie is made by a right-winger posing as a professional Democrat.

Lately, I've stopped including movies like these, in an effort not to advertise it.

'Climax' (2018)

https://screenanarchy.com/assets_c/2018/09/climax%20tiff%20sa-thumb-860xauto-72586.jpg

Visceral, chaotic, disturbing, nauseous, terrifying, colourful, outrageous, brilliant. Noe seems to shock and delight and equal measure. There are very long drawn out takes, amazingly choreographed dance scenes, hellish and horrifying images, a pulsating soundtrack but it all gets cooked into to a completely immersive piece of masterful cinema.

The narrative is not straightforward, and seems to focus on a comment on modern French society / diaspora but also shows a take on the paradise > purgatory > hell tale that mainly revolves around sex. In that respect it's definitely for the audience to make up there own mind what Noe wants to tell us. There are alot of things placed backwards in this film. Maybe Noe is trying to tell us we're not living our lives correctly.

It's a must see for any fan of Noe or art house. What an experience.

I'm not normally a fan of movies that switch genres halfway through. For movies that turn to horror, I think Bone Tomahawk is an example of a movie that does it right, while I love From Dusk Til Dawn only right up until the second that it becomes horror. I think this movie is like the former with how it's blended. The movie doesn't really change; it's more like the horror is incorporated. It's certainly not a great movie that's typical of being deserving of my rating, but I had a complete blast watching it and that is it's intended purpose.

Like cricket I was eager to see how they would incorporate the two genres and was quite pleased how it all came together, I was enjoying the straight up war and action and when it went to horror it all blended rather seamlessly and kept my involvement and was also amusing at times, If you suspend your disbelief and don't mind the very obvious set pieces , this is a fun movie

I haven't seen the picture, and have no interest in doing so; but my guess is that Reiner purposely misrepresented the non PC aspects in order to attempt to put LBJ in a better light. LBJ was one of the 5 worst presidents in American history (I'll withhold the other 4). In his non-public life he was one of the most disgusting and ruthless of American politicians.

He's not a Socialist, and has been a big and loud supporter of those who promote right-winged ideas (both Clintons, Obama with war, pro-wall street)., so to me, he doesn't believe in it, but finds it the best way to make money. The reason he didn't attack LBJ is because he's only concerned with the Democrat Party, but not interested in real issues... He can go on MSNBC all he wants, knowing government can't legislate kindness and understanding, so they all beat social issues to death (even though they were against them, until a Conservative SC fixed it), and the 2 seconds later, rainbow colors.... I don't believe they are sincere. But this could be applicable to many groups.

The minute JFK was murdered, LBJ threw in a half million troops shortly, and has always been shady... If it was legal, he would have put the country in his wife's name.

It was on Crunchyroll, and I'm a fan of Shinkai, so I went ahead and watched it. For a half-hour short, it's solid. Crunchyroll wasn't able to get the dub for this one, so I watched it subbed, though I guess it's not like I had much choice; don't get me started on the ridiculous prices the DVD is fetching. I'm not exactly sure which (admittedly sparse) cast this was since it was re-dubbed in Japanese with different voice actors from an original where the male lead, Noboru, is voiced by Shinkai himself, but the one I heard did a good job here. It's not hard to see how Shinkai would later advance on this one, but it's pretty solid for what it is.
https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/xlyJw6WmfLn378oz0ZmI0SYFoGb.jpgrating_4
It was a little different in this case since the whole dub is on YouTube, but in the same way, I'm a fan of Shinkai so I decided to go ahead and watch it. It's an improvement in a few key areas, though at least some of that can be attributed to the fact that Shinkai has more time to tell the story. With that said, the animation is also a step up, though again, this has at least a little to do with the advantages Shinkai has been given here. I guess one could likely argue that there are a few too many fades to black here (every 5-10 minutes almost), but it wasn't enough to take away from my enjoyment. The dub is a really good dub. Chris Patton is excellent as Hiroki, as are Kalob Martinez as Takuya and Jessica Boone as Sayuri. It's not quite as easy to connect to Takuya as the other two, but that seems to have more to do with how the character is written than Martinez's acting. Gendo Ikari himself John Swasey is gruff but likable (though Takuya rather amusingly calls him a demon) as Mr. Okabe who runs the military factory Hiroki and Takuya work at in the last year of middle school (you know, before the movie fast forwards three years) and the dub script is completely natural. As it was with Voices of a Distant Star, it's not that difficult to see how Shinkai improved on it with Children Who Chase Lost Voices (which is my favorite of his in case you were wondering) and Your Name, but The Place Promised in Our Early Days is a strong entry on his resume and any fan of his would be remiss not to check it out. Later, guys.

Documentary about the Chauvet Cave Paintings which date back some 30,000 years. I don't know much about cave paintings but it seemed like these were really ahead of their time. Granted it just a bunch of animals and stuff but the way the painters used the contours of the cave walls to accentuate certain aspects of their subject was something I never associated with cave paintings (always thought cave paintings were tall people looking at star systems where the secrets of life are to be found). Some of the interviews are bland but it's still worth a look just for a tour of the cave.

L'Atalante (1934)

https://thirdcoastreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/LAtalante.jpg

So, as a film that is 85 years old, it definitely shows its age... but there are scenes where it feels as though it COULD very well be happening in more modern times, simply due to the human dynamics and emotions.

I liked the blonde heroine, and I could understand why she felt stifled, thrown into a life she knew nothing about, now spending her days at sea around the same three men, which included her new husband - and I also understood his possessive jealousy, but hope he learned his lesson that being controlling only pushes people away.

It was fun to see the numerous cats, and the "old drunken sailor's" room with his knick knacks and odds and ends and hear about how he had traveled all over the world.

I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again - it wasn't particularly memorable in my book, but it was fine for what it was.

1st re-watch...Not sure what motivated this re-watch last night, but I'm glad I did. I don't think it really has a chance of winning, but for my money, this was THE Best Picture of 2018. And though I initially was sure that Sam Elliott would be getting a "lifetime achievement/body of work" Oscar for A Star is Born, I am now totally on board with Mahershala Ali winning a second Supporting Actor Oscar...the performance is nothing short of brilliant. And though he's a dark horse in the category with two previous nominations behind him, a Viggo win would be OK with me too, though I don't really see it happening.

Yes, one of my few minor issues with The King of Comedy is that the character of Rupert Pupkin comes out smelling like a rose and I'm not really sure if the character was worthy of that.

^As with Taxi Driver...

the protagonist effectively being rewarded for his reprehensible actions can be interpreted as either an indictment of a society accustomed to sensationalism - Travis kills off degenerate scum, Rupert hatches a crazy-enough-to-work scheme - or as a complete and utter break from reality for characters who had been growing increasingly mentally unstable (especially in Rupert's case as he was more explicitly shown to be imagining certain sequences)

This martial arts drama is highlighted by a great performance by James Earl Jones as the coach of the U.S. Karate Team, whose proclamation of "a team is not a team if you don't give a damn about one another" holds true as we see the members go from separate to a bonded unit when they head to Korea to face their national Taekwondo team. The highlight are the tournament scenes in the end, especially the fight between Phillip Rhee's Tommy and Simon Rhee's Dae Han. The real-life brothers have the best fight of the film and the final scene itself to this day, makes me shed a tear.

From emotional drama to standard illegal fight/revenge film, this sequel brings back Eric Roberts' Alex and Phillip Rhee's Tommy as they must train to stop an underground champion named Brakus (German bodybuilder Ralf Moeller in his film debut), who kills their friend Travis (Chris Penn, who was in the original film). When Tommy is kidnapped and forced to fight three gladiators before Brakus, Alex must infiltrate the place with some unexpected help. Despite the standard revenge plot, once again, excellent fight scenes that make Phil Rhee look great.

I can't agree with you at all. John Wick is one of the weakest movies he performed in. His beard doesn't make an impression on me, I like him smooth:D I watched again Constatine recently. There he is bad ass:D
Yeah, he might not be the greatest actor, but for me he is more than good.

Dune (directed by David Lynch) - Okay, I'm totally torn on this movie. I love it because it's nostalgic for me, I remember watching it as a teen and loving it, but after reading the novel, it's really, really bad. David Lynch has said he never should have made the film, having known nothing about the source material, and in that case, he's correct. It's an interesting, trippy looking film, but how little anyone cared about the world they were building just shines through in every way. Concepts are thrown at the viewer that have no meaning, like what the heck were Weirding Modules? Doesn't matter, they're never used and never explained. They aren't even in the book. Making Paul already an adult robs him of his story arc and character development, and he just knows everything immediately for the sake of story expediency...It was incredibly easy for him to ride the giant worm because they didn't have the time to show him struggling with it. The entire first half is slow and detailed, then by the half way point they just hit the gas til the end. I'm hoping the new Dune films (they're doing the first novel as two, possibly three films) get it right. Love David Lynch, but he failed here...

The Neighbor (2018) 2/5

The movie seemed to have some potential at first, but everytime you were waiting for something to happen, it didn't, when you thought the main character would say something he didn't. Watching the film was painful and boring at the same time. Fichtner plays a middle aged man stuck in a seemingly boring life/marriage, yet I noticed he seems off, he seems to be slightly disturbed, but we never find out why, and he'd stand in front of someone and just not say anything, so that was frustrating. I was waiting for something to happen, anything, but you're left with no resolution and wondering what was that?

Along with the second film I used to think of this as being in the top tier. Having seen the original series and become familiar with it and appreciating it so much, I react against things like the uniforms and the more military feel of Starfleet; in this sixth film I find the Shakespeare material and the allusions to the Germans in World War II, as well as other political allusions, quite unimaginative and offputting. Great action though – I hate the dilution of the space battles in recent Trek.

This is my favorite De Niro/Scorsese collaboration.

Did you notice that in both taxi driver and king of comedy deniro's character gets his behavior reinforced at the end?

^As with Taxi Driver...

the protagonist effectively being rewarded for his reprehensible actions can be interpreted as either an indictment of a society accustomed to sensationalism - Travis kills off degenerate scum, Rupert hatches a crazy-enough-to-work scheme - or as a complete and utter break from reality for characters who had been growing increasingly mentally unstable (especially in Rupert's case as he was more explicitly shown to be imagining certain sequences)

The lesson I take is that the lion's share of people are generally pretty bad at the talent of choice-making.

Also, Robert De Niro the person, he's a thug and a tool, to my view.

Since the reviews were better than expected, I decided to see this. To start with the good, it actually looked incredible....Now with the bad. The dialogue was awful, and the plot was messy and almost felt rushed in some parts. I felt like if you took the concepts of something like Artificial Intelligence (2001) and Elysium and removed all of the good elements, you would end up with something like this.

Even though I'm not a female, I can only heavily agree with this!

Of course, just because the main character is a girl, the film does a fine job showing being 14 years old in general. But what I mean is it was just done so well that I could easily slip into her shoes and feel exactly how she felt.

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (John Sturges, 1957) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050468/)

Well detailed telling of the events that lead up to the infamous gunfight at O.K. Corral. It's a movie, so don't look for total historical accuracy, instead enjoy the narrative...Lots of good backstory here on Doc Holiday (Kirk Douglas) and his regrets in life & reasons for being so reckless. Equally good backstory on Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) who we meet not in Tombstone, but in Texas where we learn of his early adult life. Shot in part at old Tuscan, so the sets look real good and familiar! What I like was the film had lots of deposition with just the right mix of action and drama included to make it all work. Jo Van Fleet (the mother from East of Eden) made a good ex prostitute, (if figures!) as Kate the sometimes girlfriend and sometimes adversary of Doc Holiday.

"Time magazine shot on high speed film" - Joel

This is more of an adventure and meditation than it is a narrative in the traditional sense. You basically sit back, relax, and let the time-lapse cinematography wash over you. Having the composer Philip Glass accompany every last frame is something that allows the viewer to zone out and feel at ease because the music is so well composed. Arpeggiated swells, repetition, choral vocals all arranged staccato, as if each voice was a limb. The camera is usually fixed, waiting to reveal the unfolding and progression of nature's overture, big city life, industrial assemblage, microcosmic irony.

A cinematic experience at its fullest if ever there was one

Cold Pursuit– Lots of killing and lots of tongue-in-cheek moments result in a very strange film. It’s always good to see Liam Neeson go full revenge and kill bad guys who truly deserve it. Yet, everything felt emotionless and by the numbers. This movie wanted to be Fargo meets Wind River but failed massively to deliver any weight or true charm. Honestly, there were some characters that were completely unnecessary. You literally will ask yourself why the female cop or the wife was even in the movie. Every scene “fleshing out” Viking’s child was pointless. Then, the movie ends with really no sense of full resolution. We literally see no ramifications of the final act or pay off at all. Just a strange cartoon like gag and then fade to black. They either ran out of budget or wanted to go full kooky. Never go full kooky.

This wasn't as bad as I thought it would be given a lot of people's harsh criticism, but I thought it was serviceable. Certainly not great, but it had some fun, cool moments. The movie's tone was all over the place though. I'll never watch it again purposefully, but I might turn the channel to it every once in awhile if it's on TV.

I think it might have turned out better as a TV show (minus all that Enchantress stuff). I would love to see Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn for an hour a week for ten or eleven weeks in a row... heh.

(OK, maybe a more badass version of her that wasn't so screwed-up by the Joker.)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Easily the best Spider-Man movie, and one of the best comic-book movies too (and there have been a lot of good comic book movies in the last ten years). Handles everything with the right amount of human drama, action and humour, without making it seem like the same thing you've seen a dozen times before, and with a good dose of meta. But the real highlight is the animation; it looks incredible and I felt like they really delved into the possibilities of what a comic book could look like as a movie.

A guy (Ray Sharkey) who needs to go get the papers, get the papers breaks into a mother and daughters (Judy Landers) home looking for the papers (divorce?) and he kills the mom and the daughter falls out of a two story building after a bit of a silly chase and she wakes up in an asylum with amnesia and the thing is the guy never even gets the papers. But the guy really needs those papers so he finds her in the asylum and begins tormenting her. Meanwhile the asylums head Dr., a bit of a whackjob herself, is performing experiments on the patients which leaves most of them dead. So I guess it's a race against time movie. It's not very good but it has a few things going for it, mainly the wardrobes.

Another movie exploring race in the United States. There were a few things about the plot that didn't work for me but it's a well made film with very good acting. The story follows Collin, a recently released felon on his last three days of probation. Collins best friend Miles apparently doesn't give two squats about his buddy potentially getting off probation as he does everything possible to get him thrown back into prison in these final three days and that was the problem I had with this. If Miles was my buddy and I knew how he was, I would've called in sick for three days and never left the halfway house, especially on the last night. The movie has quite a bit to say, especially comparing how Collin and Miles are viewed/treated differently based solely on appearance, but it didn't have much of a flow to it.

I've always had a bit of a fascination with Australia. On one hand I think the land is beautiful and the people seem cool. On the other hand they both seem scary as hell. It may make me hesitant to visit, but either feeling translates well when I'm watching a movie set there. This was a fun B movie but I was a little let down by the bland finale.

Lost track of how many times I've watched this movie, but it has to be double digits...47 years after its original release, this film is still dazzling and eye popping entertainment anchored by the brilliant and inventive direction and choreography by Bob Fosse, Liza Minnelli lights up the screen and not just in her musical scenes either...watch the scene where she and Brian meet Marisa Berensen's character for the first time...Liza and Fosse rule that scene...Michael York is sex on legs, I don't know what else to say, this movie was just as dazzling last night as it was 47 years ago...in my top three of best film adaptations of a Broadway musical.

I remember sitting on the floor watching this with my family at a young age. I was reading an interview book on Fellini, and as I was reading about environment, I thought of this movie.. Something easy. I knew the ratings were horrible, but I still expected more. Any amount of effort could have made it pretty good; considering the main plot is really good, and one could have really explored human nature.

People who know the source material praised it:

As a big fan of the manga, I think that this movie is ideal for fans of the original material since I lot of my emotional connection to the movie was in seeing the characters I already know "live".

In general, people who were fans of the original manga rated this movie much higher than critics and film snobs (the type of people common in this forum is not the target audience for such a movie).

To me, Alita was the best Hollywood blockbuster movie (i.e. budget over 150 million) of the last 15 years. Yes, it is the best blockbuster since Lord of the Rings. :D It is also way more creative and original than any blockbuster movie since Avatar (2009), for example, having a superdeformed-looking cyborg as main-character was a bold move to make in a movie aimed at a wide audience.

Widows was great.

A thriller in the hands of a talented auteur really becomes a different kind of beast entirely. Completely different beats, notes and stylistic choices and that felt really fresh. And characters came first. I liked that.

I knew nothing about this going in except that it was highly acclaimed. The first 40 minutes or so were a bit of a struggle for me. The way the camera lingered on mundane things had me recalling Jeanne Dielman, and that's something much better off forgetting. I didn't even like how the movie looked. It had a certain clarity that lacks character to my eyes, and I was already writing the movie off as a dud. Then everything turned around upon the New Year's trip. The movie suddenly looked beautiful to me, and I think the problem I had prior was due to the movie being mostly set in the house during daytime. Once we started getting outdoor and nighttime shots, the character I was looking for came through. This coincided with the drama picking up. It was established that these were very average people, and so when everyday average horrible things would happen, it would be effective. This is a movie that grew on me more and more as it went along, and in the end I came to agree with it's best picture nomination.

I just had a weekend with arthouse movies together with a Swedish film director, who passed by Copenhagen, from the Berlinale, before going to Göteborg in Sweden. My favorite out of the bunch of movies we saw were Leos Carax' moving love story: The Lovers on the Bridge from 1991, but all of the 4 movies were good, each in its own way.

http://www.towleroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/sauvage.jpg

Sauvage (2018) by Camille Vidal-Naquet

Another picture which represents the wave of queer cinema of recent years. Sauvage, in its depiction of a young gay prostitute, is clearly setting new boundaries for what subject matter can be filmed. The ambiguities of the main character is reminiscent of Agnes Varda's hallmark film Vagabond from 1985. An interesting debut film, not without some disturbing scenes in the life of a young homeless prostitute, but the manuscript does not really justify a whole feature length film.

Ex Libris: New York Public Library (2017) by Frederick Wiseman

This film only adresses a small target group of cinephiles, yet its running time underpins the visualisation of the institution which the New York Public Library is. The Lovers on the Bridge (1991) by Leos Carax

Another film that secures the legacy of Leos Carax auteurship. Im slowly going through all of his films, so far, with Holy Motors as my favourite, though its also his newest. Dennis Lavant makes so truly unique acting and he might be one of my favorite French actors. I would recommend this to people who love quirky indie movies, though this is more of an artsy French love movie

Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski (2018)

Considered by many to be the greatest sculptor of the 20th Century, the lion's share of Stanislav Szukalski's (sue-cull-skee) unsold work was destroyed in a Nazi bombing raid of Warsaw, Poland in 1939. Having traveled to the U.S. before and with U.S. citizenship from a prior marriage, Szukalski and his current wife moved to the U.S. permanently after the bombing, eventually settling in Burbank. Not having the name recognition that he did in Europe he gradually drifted into obscurity.

In 1971 his presence was accidentally discovered by the actor Glenn Bray, and was soon surrounded and promoted by some of the artists of the day. The group included George DiCaprio. George and his son Leonardo (the actor) eventually produced this captivating documentary.

This is a unique find. It's as if DaVinci were recently discovered, along with all his writings, teaching and that much of his work became available.

Perhaps Ms. M would like to comment on this greatest of sculptors who was Polish.

Available on Netflix and streaming services. Doc's rating: 9/10

Forgive me late replay. I think Szukalski is more known abroad, than in Poland. He was famous here between First and Second WW. He was a part of bohemia, but than he emigrated to US and I think he is rather known there than here. He is told as a man with hugh ego:D

I got the impression that Szukalski has somehow been cheated by Polish art historians. He was born in Warta, Poland in 1893, and made several trips back and forth to the U.S.

In 1936 he was declared by the Polish government to be its greatest living artist. He escaped during the Siege of Warsaw, and eventually settled in the U.S. All his unsold works had been destroyed in the bombing.

Anyway, I think you'd enjoy the film if you get a chance to see it. Yes, he was highly opinionated. His sculptures are breathtaking.

Death in Venice - 7.5/10
Probably the first time I enjoyed the cinematography, and didn't care there was hardly any dialogue.. Meditative, reflective, and delicate. I'd love to find more movies like this when I'm in that mood. I only have 1-2 Visconti left before I complete his filmography.

The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018)

Uninspired and watered down horror that loans from multiple sources without much success.

Excellent movie. Big fan of Kristen Stewart. Despite reading several theories & watching the movie twice, I still don’t understand what happened in the final scenes of the movie.

.....

Do you think she is dead? She is noticeably wearing all white in that last scene. From memory

Long runtime, had some acting issues for me, still a very decent 80's crime flick.
A mix of Donnie Brasco and The French Connection.

'Ms. 45' (1981)

Low budget, gritty, revenge flick that gets under your skin.

The late Zoe Lund manages to draw the audience in with her facial expressions in this movie. As she's a mute seamstress with only one line in the entire movie she pulls it off very well. There's no real resolution in the movie but it still serves as a satisfying way to explore 80 minutes of early 1980s vigilante type killer movie. There's one jump scare in it (featuring Director Abel Ferrara) that made me rise about 4 inches off my seat.

Special mention goes to the jazz score which is almost oppressively piercing at times. And the final disco scene which is oddly mesmerizing.

Ran in with low desires, didn't see the trailer and didn't realize it existed until GF called attention to out at the theater.

The story was what you'd expect from a western, wasn't appallingly unique. Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike made it worth the ticket cost, astonishing exhibitions by both. One of Bales better exhibitions of his profession (not THE best, but rather its one of them).

Extraordinary acting, incredible melodic score, extraordinary cinematography.

alter: subsequent to viewing the trailer for it, skip it on the off chance that you can. Much the same as most trailers nowadays it demonstrates excessively IMO

Black Panther - 3

Not my favourite BP nominee, but the first I've actually gone and re-watched, which I figure has to count for something.

Malcolm X (1992)

Y’know, I don’t usually see this brought up in “no introduction needed” listings of great films but in trying to come up with something to type up so as to not have this just be a title and a rating, I realized that much of what I could think to say is already something like self-evident.

I think I’ll settle for “Denzel is transcendent and, arguably, bigger and better than the film itself.”

Diana’s hit new show was right there in front of her: crusty-but-benign authority figures from different premises meeting up for lunch and discuss the indignities of life.
