Well, now you really should watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 since it's intended to be funnier.

I will watch it, but probably not until I've made more progress on my 70s list.

The Beguiled (1971) 4.5

I'm not sure why this Clint Eastwood movie is on the top 100 westerns list. To me, it's a lot of things, but it sure isn't a western. To me, it's more a crazy mix of drama, romance, dark comedy, and especially horror. I knew it was going to be a strange movie when, about 5 minutes in, Clint Eastwood is kissing a 12 year old girl. It's unique, freaky, creepy, kind of disturbing, and very good. I would recommend it to anyone to at least try.

I'm on a Tarantino REWATCH SPREE:

Pulp Fiction (1994)

http://quaivatdienanh.com/Uploads/16/13_Nov/chungtoc-4.jpg

Well, what can I say? It's a big cliche, but this film is just SO incredibly good! The structure, the style, the dialogue AND the depth of the "whole" work brilliantly together! I truly feel Tarantino made THE perfect film here.
This isn't one of those typical Tarantino "genre pictures". This is Tarantino's actual view on life and all of its complexes, dressed up as one of the coolest crime films ever made.
I strongly urge GUNSLINGER in particlar to rewatch this one somewhere in the future, because I feel that this film should thematically really be something that he understands and likes. Set your mind free of all the prejudices you have against Tarantino and watch this film again.
This was my third viewing of this film (the last one was almost two years ago) and although I got the message of this film the previous two times, it is only now that I truly see how strongly and smoothly it resonates throughout all three of the intertwined stories.

It was already one of my absolute top favorite films of all time, but this rewatch definitely confirmed my love for it and perhaps even strengthened it.

Indisputable masterpiece.

Pulp Fiction is a real gem. I am not a fan of this genre of film (not very serious crime films) but Pulp Fiction is so awesome and so cool that even I was exploding with excitement when I watched it ("I will git medieval on your ass"). I rate it as 5 and it is on my top 60 favorites.

FREDOOMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FOR THE GLORY THAT WAS GREECE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RAM THE TRIREMES INTO THEIR FAT (asses) SHIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BLOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was one of the most stupid films I ever watched (even worse than the 1st one), it's about as stupid as Lion King and The Tree of Life clumped together. It is also even offensive to the ancient Greeks and Persians and these battles that shaped the history of western civilization perhaps more than any others when they are depicted as mentally retarded videogame characters.

But, anyway, that doesn't matter! it's GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4_5-

I think it's better than 12 Years a Slave and all Nolan's films. Turn your brain off and enjoy!

Aha!!! I knew it! I knew you were going to become one of those miserable art house snobs who without even seeing it automatically hates any film that dares to be mainstream, that dares to actually try and be fun. You disgust me sir!

:p

I noticed that sometimes you appear to regard me as someone with tastes different than ours but notice that the majority of films in my top 200 are mainstream blockbusters it's just that not all mainstream enjoyable films are made in the US. Kurosawa and Miyazaki, for instance, are the Japanese equivalents of the likes of Hitchcock and Spielberg.

I'm standing up for all the people on here who don't think that cinema begins and ends with art house; the people who are more interested in the latest Sylvester Stallone film than the newest offering from Bela Tarr, the people who are more interested in films which feature cats talking and dancing than being tortured. This is a call to arms for all the normal people out there - it's time for the revolution of the simple-minded! :D

The Butler
(Lee Daniels, 2013)
2.5

The movie tries so hard to pass itself off as a meaningful, emotional, important film, using the character of the Butler as a filter for the last 50 years of American history, but ultimately it's just a failed attempt at Oscar-bait, slightly elevated by a strong, buoyant performance by Forest Whitaker. The cast is star-loaded, but distractingly so. Instead of paying attention to the story, you're waiting for the next recognizable face to pop onto the screen. ("Hey, look, there's Jane Fonda! There's John Cusack! Wait a second, is that Mariah Carey?") Alan Rickman is the highlight as President Reagan. Robin Williams, on the other hand, is laughably bad as President Eisenhower.

Deadfall
(Stefan Ruzowitzky, 2012)
1.5

I'm not sure if this movie was direct-to-video or not, but it feels like it. Terrible script, cringe-worthy dialogue, cardboard characters, predictable plot, an over reliance on cliches. Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde make it even worse by giving two of the worst attempts at a southern accent I've heard in a long, long time. A complete and utter waste of time.

The Running Man
(Paul Michael Glaser, 1987)
2

A more faithful adaptation of Stephen King's novel would've played like a futuristic, high-tech version of The Fugitive. Instead we get a cheesy 80's action flick starring a miscast Schwarzenegger in a movie dumb enough to kill brain cells. That's unfortunate, since the game-show setting was ripe for satire. A better, more ambitious director could've explored the dangerous and manipulative ways of the media. Paul Verhoeven, for example, deftly mixed satire and mature themes into his great action flick, Robocop. The Running Man, however, settles for Schwarzenegger delivering one-liners in a ridiculous, yellow jumpsuit while disposing of villains like Professor Subzero, who wields a deadly hockey stick and exploding pucks, and Dynamo, an opera singer who shoots electricity and drives a buggy.

Carrie (1976) & Carrie (2013): (7/10)
I just watched both Carries, and this may sound stupid, but I just felt like I watched the same movie twice. I know it's a remake but it's about 80% the same down to the lines. I can see then why people may suggest that the 1976 version is better, it was the first and it was actually something new. All in all though I think they are about the same, the 2013 has a couple scenes done better, and the prom part is bigger, which is awesome, and of course one of my favorite young actors as Carrie, but the special effects kinda ruined it. On the other hand the 1976 has a much more unique and iconic style, it's of course, the first, and it does also have scenes done better than it's remake. All in all, it's about the same, the 2013 version is more updated and easier to get into, but both are worth a check.
I still prefer the book though.

Not breaking any new ground here movie wise, but I got a few laughs out of it. Also turns out Stacy's Mom was a porn star.

Bad Words

http://www.comicsonline.com/wp-content/uploads/MAIN-bad-words-jason-bateman-rohan-chand-460.jpg

Had my eye on this one for a little bit. If I had the chance to see it I was going too. It is Jason Bateman's directorial debut. And I found it to be really entertaining. Bateman really nails it as a foul mouth smart ass who just wants to complete his mission at all cost. He enters a middle school national spelling bee contest at the age of 40 because of a loophole. Not to spoil anything but he has motivation as to why he is doing it. Some of the stuff he says and does to these kids are out of control but really funny. He befriends one of them and their relationship is comedy gold really.

Could it have used a little more heart? I suppose. But you should go into this movie knowing it's not for everyone. Bateman is absolutely funny as hell and confident as ever in this role. It's just a fun movie you should go into not taking it too seriously. Some might be turned off by the comedy. But i found it really entertaining. It has a good enough story to keep your interest too. I'll probably revisit it and watch it with someone else when it comes out on blu ray too see if it was as funny as I thought.

I'd give it a strong 3 out of 5.

Recorded The Rock on the DVR last night. Haven't watched it for years...

This time round I've been able to spot that the film is filled with almost every single racial stereotype and general stereotype going.

Black guy and black woman held hostage in Alcatraz's cells and the black Tram Driver, all acting stereotypically black.
Stanley's girlfriend, Carla, being "Catholic, pregnant and unmarried".
Gay Hairdresser who cries at the action, only cares about if he did a good job with Mason's hair and calls himself a "stylist" rather than a Barber.
Mysterious British guy (Mason).
Ranger Bob at Alcatraz being fat and jolly.
A-typical hot girls (Mason's daughter and her friend, both white). Also Carla, who was the Prom Queen. Also white.
The hostage who is weak and cries, who turns out to be a family man.
Bad guy who has an "Irish Father" who hates Mason because he's an "English prick" who is actually Scottish.

I'm sure there's more. Good film though, definitely Bay's best. 3.5

Afflicted (2014)

3.25/5

Unlike my co-host, Ben, I'm not big into horror films. I like sci-fi thrillers, like Alien. That being said, I thought this movie was very well done. These days, it seems like we are living with found-footage overkill. But Afflicted came off more as a documentary thriller than found-footage. The camera isn't shaky the whole time (See: Blair Witch Project). It was also really cool to be seeing the movie mostly from the "killer" point of view. It was a nice, fresh take on a couple of genres we've seen a lot of lately. And being that the two stars (Derek Lee & Clif Prowse) have known each other for a while, really shows. They were also the writers and directors as well, but I didn't get the feeling that they came up short on any of the three. Great movie and a cool ending, especially the during-credits scene.

Usually it seems when I watch a movie for the first time in many years, I don't like it as much as I did before. This had the opposite affect; I remembered it as good, but I thought it was awesome this time. What really struck me was how well it has aged; it's amazing that this movie is almost 40 years old.

Hey, edarsenal, I remember that movie! It's been a while, but I'll never forget those two singing, "Who's Your Little Whoo-zis?" :) Love those guys.

Okay, on to rate the last movie I saw, which was....
Man of Steel (2013)

http://splashpage.mtv.com//wp-content/uploads/splash/2013/05/Man-of-Steel-S-Poster-550x801.jpg

I tried to avoid spoilers for this movie because I heard people were pretty divided over it, despite the huge box office receipts. I will say right off that I liked it a lot. I thought Henry Cavill did a great job as the new Superman. And Michael Shannon was excellent as General Zod. I liked the way the story was handled, with the writers getting us right into Superman's life as an adult, then having flashbacks to his younger years on the Kent farm.

The action was fairly blistering, with the fight over the city (I keep wanting to say "super") awesome. This despite the damage involved in saving the world. But I didn't mind. Just said to myself, "comic book movie" and was fine.

After I saw the movie, I read a review from the past where a critic complained because
Superman is forced to kill Zod. He cried, "Superman never kills anybody! That's his thing!" Well, as I recall, in Richard Lester's version of "Superman II," he took away Zod and company's powers and threw them into the great unkown where they almost certainly froze to death! Then the critic complained that in the very next scene, Superman and a general were laughing and cutting up like nothing happened. No such thing happened. After Superman took off, the General's driver smiled because Superman, in her words, was "hot." Superman was very solemn in that scene.

If I ever believed every critic, I'd never see a movie, so I try to tune them out until I've actually seen the movie. I don't always managed to stay unspoiled by them, but most of the time it works out.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Watched this for the first time the other night. Wow, what a film. From the first minute to the last, I was completely engrossed by the fantastic acting - both from Pacino, Cazale and the supporting cast - and the plot (it may be a simple premise but they often make for the best films). I honestly can't fault it in any way, hence the perfect score I've given.

I wouldn't know how to rate the film because it's so unique that I don't really have a comparative. After watching it I didn't thought the movie was about anything in particular, I thought there was maybe a criticism on the snobbism of the bourgeoisie, or maybe that by the character of Fernando Ray there was a little commentary on the highly corrupted government in third world countries. After that I went to read Roger Ebert's review and I think it confirmed what I thought. He thinks that to this point Bunuel don't really care for the plot he just let go his fantasies and I totally see his point. Still I really enjoyed those pointless fantasies and it made me want to watch some other of his work!

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)

Excellent and enjoyable film. Robert Shaw's performance was magnificent, and Walter Matthau was his usual entertaining self. A simple plot but the tension ratcheted up by the end is unbelievable and the ending was actually quite surprising. What lets it down a tad for me is some of the poor supporting cast, and some fairly hammy acting from some of them. While this is a slight quibble, the film still holds up very well today as one of the defining crime films of the seventies. Highly recommended.

Watched the first one the previous night and I've been a fan of it a long time. Finally got round to watching the sequel and I really enjoyed it. It's not about the scares in this one although they do have some but I found the story to be very interesting. It was nice that they decided to carry on with the story of the prequel and even answer any questions left from the first. Overall a nice lil movie a definite 8/10. :)

Conspiracy Theory (1997, Richard Donner)

Gibson is surprisingly first-rate as a paranoiac fixated on the most outlandish and absurd of conspiracy theories. He seems to embody your run-of-the-mill tinfoil hat 'truther' with his sustained tirades and anomalous personality. With that being said, one of his theories turns out to be true, so perhaps he is not so deranged after all. Impressive screen presence aside, I felt rather iffy about its writing, and Donner makes the serious seem risible with his subpar direction. There was a handful of potentially thrilling moments, but they came across as tawdry and cringeworthy. Still, for what its worth, it was fun.

Liam Neeson, a wolf hunter who helps protect the local oil drillers from attack, and a bunch of other guys who work in the oil business, survive a plane crash in Alaska and end up suffering the cold and harsh weather and altitude sickness... then end up hunted by a pack of wolves.

What's different is that the "creatures" are kept to the darkness, have a genuinely paranormal essence about them built up over time, which adds depth to whether these things are normal wolves or the viewer is looking at these things the way a genuinely stranded person would in that situation... and then they're only revealed at the end and don't disappoint.

Reminded me a bit like Alien but set in cold mountain wilderness rather than cold space wilderness.

Full of atmosphere, and decently written and played characters, feels almost claustrophobic at times and definitely got some scary bits. Also pretty realistic at times too.

A modern Creature Feature.

One of the best Marvel movies so far. Pleasantly surprised as was not a fan of the first Cap movie and have always worried that the Cap would not work properly in the modern day. The first movie was a sleek streamlined action flick. This is still heavy on the action, but tries to go the way of a The Departed or Internal Affairs. Not that such a choice is bad, it felt a tad cluttered at times and it does not do it as well as Scorsese. Still good, but I still prefer the first one.

Cricket, just saw Witness For the Prosecution for the first time and I agree that it was brilliant. They gave Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich top billing but this was Charles Laughton's movie all the way. He is brilliant as an ailing barrister who defends Power in court, often berated by his pushy nurse, played by Elsa Lancaster. This movie is two-hours-long but never flags at all. There are several twists that I did not see coming and they only add to the movie. Just top-drawer all the way. This one gets high marks all-around and is very recommended.

The Queen of Versailles 1_5

Documentary that is guaranteed to annoy anybody who actually has to work for a living. It follows the Siegel family who have made their money by selling some quite dubious real estate plans and then living off their customers mortgages (something like that - finance is not my speciality). With that money the Siegel's plan to build America's largest house modeled on the Palace of Versailles, however after the financial crisis of 2008 their business is seriously affected. Watch in horror as they have to give up their dream of Versailles, sell their private jets and deal with only one nanny. As you can guess this film really bugged me, they are complaining about how they are hard up and having to buy things from Walmart, but they are still living in the lap of luxury - whilst the layoff of almost their entire workforce is more or less dismissed. I dread to think what this film would have been like if there had been no financial crash - it would probably have been them showing off their tacky sleaze palace for 2 hours.

Captain America: The Winter Solider, 4.9/5. I just loved this movie. It's the best one to come out either Avengers wave yet. It looked great, the acting was amazing, I didn't know Falcon was going to be in it and I loved every second of it. The reason it gets -.1 though is because they talked about getting Falcon's suit back and didn't show anything about it happening. I get that they may have wanted to skip showing us even more action in an already action heavy film, but at least show us something about it. I'm a little torn about that whole bit but I'm leaning more towards not liking that, hence the minus.

One of my favorite things about this film is that it managed to break away from all the typical military stereotypes that plague so many other films while still having a lot of military influence. I think it was also fun for me because it seemed like I knew the most about the characters based on the comics throughout the entire theater. I was surprised how many people didn't know what role bucky played.

Everything about this film was pretty much incredible and having quicksilver and Scarlet witch at the end got me so hyped for what's too come. I have other movies I want to see, but really this is one I might go see again. It was just too amazing.

It's hard to rate a movie like this because I know it's my problem that I can't fully get into it. I got some chills from it, but overall it's just too old for me. Running Scared - 7/10
Doom - 4/10
Clerks II - 8/10
Pirates 2 - 7/10
Superman Returns - 8/10

Wow, you really liked Superman Returns a lot more than I did. My review of the film:

Supermen Returns is the long awaited revival of the comic book hero to the big screen since he first arrived back in 1978. This gargantuan 2006 production finds our Superhero returning to Metropolis, the Daily Planet, and Lois Lane after an extended absence in which Superman apparently returned to Krypton to confirm the destruction of the planet of his birth. Upon his return to Metropolis, Clark Kent finds his old job back at the Daily Planet, finds out that Lex Luthor is back on the loose after five years in prison and that Lois Lane is engaged and has a child.

Director and co-writer Bryan Singer has mounted this production with a great deal of care and attention to detail. He seems to have been attempting to revive the spirit of the original 1978 film, as certain dialogue, settings, and music have been lifted and re-thought from the 1978 film (including Superman and Lois' romantic flight over Metropolis to "Can You Read My Mind?") but it all rings hollow for me because the film is lacking the primary ingredient that made the 1978 film so successful...humor.

Singer has directed this film with a totally straight face. It is dark, bleak, and humorless, the only exception to that being the deliciously campy performance from Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. Taking the humor out of the story also affects its pacing giving us a long and laborious film that offers state of the art special effects but not much else.

The casting ranges from OK to completely off the mark. Brandon Routh is sincere as Clark Kent/Superman and his resemblance to the late Christopher Reeve doesn't exactly work against him. Kate Bosworth is bland and unconvincing as Lois Lane...the emotional spitfire that Margot Kidder created back in 78 looks better and better after this tired interpretation of the role. Frank Langella is miscast as Perry White as is Sam Huntington as Jimmy Olsen and James Marsden fails to bring any spark to the proceedings as Richard White, Perry's nephew and Lois' fiancée. Even the normally charismatic Parker Posey fails to liven the proceedings as Luthor's new mistress, Kitty.

I also found it hard to accept the fact that Lois could fall in love with anyone else, much less have a child with him. The whole idea of Lois falling in love with another man works against the entire legend of these two characters and may be at the crux of why this this movie doesn't work.

But Lois didn't have child with another man. Watch the film again...

I've seen countless of times and it always seems to amaze me. These issues about racial fighting and the illegal aliens coming in. This movie was made 1998 ! and it insanely relates to every topic that's detrimental to our society. The acting was truly magnificent. The character Derek was disgusting but Edward played him so well, racism and Nazi sympathy has been around since the demise of the Hitler. The movie plays so well on the society as a whole. The small neighberhood. I'm going on a tangent so I'll leave it. anyway.s long hiatus..hello anyone who remembers my name.

Snowpiercer - Its worth watching for Tilda Swinton who is hilariously brilliant, and the bizarreness of it all. But it's not a brilliant movie. It's strengths are in it's ridiculousness which is always risky. I liked the sort of socio-political undertones but ultimately it's an action movie trying to be a bit too more profound than it actually is. I'm also not a great lover of fight scenes, so they were probably lost on me. 6/10.

I enjoyed this movie despite some of the plot points not really making sense. Hugh Jackman was awesome in this, I am not a father but I could still relate to how far would you do for someone you love. I did not see the ending coming which was a surprise for me cause I can usually pick them. Overall this is a good movie with a few holes in it.

It was okay. I'm not sure if it's the people I talk to that made me think the movie was going to be great or maybe I'm just too old. I think the answer is probably the latter. I know if I saw it when I was a teenager, I would have undoubtedly loved it. It was a good film, don't get me wrong, I just would have enjoyed it more if the narration had simply ended after introduction. It began stating the obvious, making me feel like a child. I can definitely see what people love about this film, the narration just really put me off though.

The Village, Saw, War Of The Worlds, Million Dollar Baby, Brokeback Mountain and The Grudge in one film. Plays out more like a series of skits that the filmmakers randomly thought up off the tops of their heads and then decided not to really put much imagination into the writing process.

Craig Bierko is the best thing about the film playing Tom Ryan as a spoof of Tom Cruise.

Awful... 0.5... with one redeeming feature: The last skit with Craig Bierko spoofing Tom Cruise on Oprah. That one scene had me in stitches and gives the film that one half popcorn.

This could go for any of Wes Anderson's films but I find them hard to get into. Although they may be visually interesting and there are usually a few good performances (usually from Bill Murray) after about twenty minutes I start getting bored and lose interest in the whole thing. Maybe it is just because it just doesn't connect with me, but I will try again when I see Grand Budapest Hotel and see if that changes my mind - but I doubt it will.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 2.5

Everybody I saw this with thought it was great, but I thought it was merely alright. It was as if they tried to put two films into the same movie - when they should have just kept to the one main plot line. The end result of this is that the ending just felt tacked on to me and lost any of its relevance. I feel I might be too harsh on this film as I was annoyed that the trailers showed every scene from the film (including the very end) and every time Electro turned up the score used some dubstep music - which I hate.

Escape Plan (2013)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5d/Escapeplanfilmposter.jpg

Stallone and Ahnuld decided to make themselves a duo after Expendables went down so well.

Stallone, a guy who is paid to escape from prisons to test their security, ends up in a prison he can't get out of and joins forces with another inmate, Ahnuld, and the two work together to find a flaw in the security of the prison.

Fun, no brainer with a bit of a plot to it and it works pretty well too in general terms... but the general tone feels forced having Sly and Arn in the same film trying their best to play off of one another.

Arn is also showing his age very, very badly. He barely does anything physical, and when he does, it's either a wide shot, or an extreme close up, so as it's hard to see if it's him or not doing the physical work.

Jim Caviezel as the Prison Warden is out of place but plays it well.
Vinnie Jones as Caviezel's right hand man is wooden and underused too.
Fiddy Cent plays a friend of Stallone's and is surprisingly the strongest "actor" on board. He plays a very likeable and believable good guy.

Would have worked without having Sly and Arn together... I would have hoped the two teamed up with something better than this rather than churning out the olde prison escape plot simply to get themselves into a film together.
Still though, it's fun... but lacks the humour that the trailers would have you believe. The trailers make it look like it contains a lot of Expendables 2 style humour, but, it doesn't. It's more along the lines of Stallone's other jail film Lock Up.

Son of Batman, 4/5. Some people who have already watched this film say it's bad for this reason here, or that reason there but I don't really see anything too bad about it. The voice acting was good, the story wasn't bad, although Deathstroke's involvement was a little too typical for a character like him. I think and few inaccuracies about how certain characters are the way they are is what makes it lose that one point, but it's still a very good film overall.

I used to not like Meg Ryan, and I'm not sure why. I think it was just some strange misconception I had. I enjoyed this movie the whole way through. There weren't any special moments for me that made me think it was anything better than good, but I liked it.

My favorite chick flick! And the only movie I find Billy Crystal even remotely attractive in :-)

I watched all six Rocky movies over the course of the weekend just for the hell of it, obviously concluding with this one. I don't exactly love the franchise, but it has its moments and this film in particular was still alright - though it'd have to be coming off the heels of Rocky V.

I've always been a fan of John Landis's films. Trading Places is his most flawless.

I agree that Dan Aykroyd was great in this. In my opinion, his acting here is far better than his Academy Award nominated performance in 1989's Driving Miss Daisy.

Eddie's first 3 movies were all slam dunks: 1982's 48 Hours, 1983's Trading Places, and 1984's Beverly Hills Cop. His career peaked again with 1988's Coming to America, 1996's The Nutty Professor, and 2006's Dreamgirls. Everything in between and since 2006 ranged from extremely mediocre to extremely terrible, with the exception of 1987's Beverly Hills Cop 2, which was alright, and his 2 outstanding stand-up films, 1983's Delirious and 1987's Eddie Murphy Raw.

On a sidenote, it's too bad Eddie and Danny never collaborated again on another movie since. They seemed to have excellent chemistry.

Is it true that Eddie Murphy's role in Trading Places was originally intended for John Belushi before his death?

Pretty entertaining for a B-movie. It was in black and white, with cheesy fighting, and a very unrealistic plot. It was hard to make out what was going on exactly though because there is no English subtitled version. Everyone reviewing it online has watched it in Turkish as well. It was better than the 1966 Batman movie. There was a lot of nudity, and Batman even killed a couple people by shooting them. Batman and Robin both hung out at a strip club twice. I made this avatar in tribute.

Edit: Oh and Batman was a total player constantly making out with half-naked chicks.

Dark, twisted black comedy. I didn't have high hopes but in fact the first half of it is quite good. Pat Healy is good. But It just doesn't develop. There's no real twists and turns and extraordinary plotlines. It's just a series of gradually more ridiculous dares really. And the ending is just a bit of a damp squib.

(Richard Donner, 1978)

i'm not really a superhero movie fan, however this was awesome. i liked all four of the major players, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent / Superman, and definitely Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. i am biased with her bc she is in Black Christmas (1974), so i was happy to see her in this too. although i do think the hokiest part of the movie is when Lois Lane tries to get Superman to read her mind after he takes her flying

He Got Game
(Spike Lee, 1998)
3
There's a great film hiding within this Spike Lee Joint, but unfortunately it's marred by Lee's overindulgence. Some scenes are completely unnecessary, other scenes drag a few seconds too long. The movie also suffers from Lee trying to cram too many messages into one film. Real-life basketball star Ray Allen adds an authenticity to the basketball scenes (as do brief appearances from several NBA stars and college coaches), but Allen lacks the ability to emote, which makes his character dull and uninteresting.

The Ballad of Cable Hogue
(Sam Peckinpah, 1970)
3
This lighthearted western, playfully directed by Sam Peckinpah, shares themes with The Wild Bunch and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, but it lacks the grit and grime and violence that I've come to expect from Peckinpah. Perhaps those preconceived notions kept me from liking the film as much as I'd hoped, since it was so different from the other Peckinpah films I've come to love. Some aspects of the film annoyed me, like the fast-forwarded, Looney-Tunes style running that is used in a few scenes. But there's still a lot in here to admire--- the performances of Jason Robards and Stella Stevens, for instance, as well as the dusty landscapes and cinematography.

Just sat and watched Batman Returns.

Had the first one on DVD for years, was one of the first DVDs I ever bought in fact, when DVDs first came out back in the 90s... and for some reason I never got round to buying Returns...

... until today :)

Haven't seen it in years, I forgot how good this film really is.

Great across the board, one of the best old-school comic book films ever made with hints and touches of modern cinematic photography and effects. Slightly less serious than the first film, but has massive charisma throughout simply through the characters and acting.

One thing that got me, was the animal handling. The cats in the alley when Selina becomes Catwoman... then the animal work that was put in when Penguin gets his Penguin Army going. Ok the Penguin Army was mixed with animatronics and some cartoon work drawn onto the film (the first Batman also had some animation work) but the real animals must have taken a sh*tload of work and training to get them just right.

The scene when Penguin is taking his final walk toward his Umbrella Stand, mixed with the Elfman's music is awesome.

Should have bought this before the Comics Countdown, I'd have definitely put it higher than 20th... would more than likely have broken into my Top 10, possibly even Top 5.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
(Anthony & Joe Russo, 2014)
3
Even though I'm kind of sick of the whole superhero craze, the 1940's setting and the old-fashioned values of Captain America helped set the first film apart from others in the genre. Now that Cap has been transported to the present, many of the elements that I found so fun and endearing about the first installment are gone. The sequel boasts much better action sequences, however, and it's nice to see a Marvel movie that relies less on CGI spectacles in favor of an old-school, political-thriller approach. Unfortunately, a problem that persists throughout these Marvel movies is a lack of stakes, and that trend continues here. No matter how dire the predicament, the audience never feels that the heroes are truly in danger because the script always introduces a deus ex machine in the form of a familiar face or plot contrivance. Because of that, I rarely feel as invested in these movies as I should be. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is still better than a lot of superhero movies out there, though, and I think I'm more interested in following Cap's future exploits than I am Iron Man or Thor or any of the other Avengers.

Out of the Furnace
(Scott Cooper, 2013)
3.5
A bleak, depressing, character-driven movie about the working-class struggles of members of a dying town, where the air is thick with pollution from the local mill and jobs are scarce and life is hard. Christian Bale's character, despite numerous hardships, remains admirably stoical. His brother, on the other hand (played by Casey Affleck), takes a different approach. Beaten down by life and with no respite in sight, he unleashes his anger and frustration out on the world, barreling headfirst down an increasingly dark path inhabited by users and abusers and predatory scum. The movie's greatest strength lies in the raw, rugged, naturalistic performances from the stellar cast. The script that supports them isn't quite as strong, however, and the movie ultimately feels a bit too familiar and predictable. Considering the level of talent involved, the movie had the potential to be much greater that it is, but it's still a good movie, much better than a lot of tripe released last year, and it deserves more attention that it received.

Good on ya, edarsenal, for watching Dinner at Eight and My Man Godfrey and giving them good reviews. You must be watching Turner Classic Movies lately because that's exactly where I recorded and watched these exact two from last week.

Yes, Marie Dressler is dynamite in DAE, with her little dog, "Tarzan," and her dialogue, especially her final shot at Jean Harlow. Great movie and one the few movies I've seen with John Barrymore that wasn't a silent. Just saying. For those who only know his brother, Lionel Barrymore, from It's a Wonderful Life as a bad guy, check this one out or one of his many, many roles as a good guy. He could play anything.

My gosh, My Man Godfrey, I thought was just a great movie. It's a comedy but it didn't have me falling down laughing but just smiling in awe at how great everybody was. William Powell, one of my favorites from The Thin Man movies, was excellent in this but I was blown away by Carole Lombard as the ditsy youngest daughter of the family. The fact that she was beautiful was a plus, also. Did you happen to hear the opening by Robert Osbourne, where he talked about the past relationship between Powell and Lombard? Fascinating trivia.

Samoan lawyer, I'm sorry you didn't much like Arthur. I put that near the top of my all-time favorite comedies. The one-liners, especially from John Gieguld, are top-notch. My favorite Dudley Moore performance also. Ah, well...vive le difference. :)

And Rodent, thank you for your awesome review of Batman Returns This is not only nearly my favorite Batman movie, but is definitely near the top of my favorite Tim Burton movies. I think he was pretty much left alone by "producer" Jon Peters, and left to his own devices on this movie and it shows. I like it tons better than the first movie.

I cannot comment on what Sexy Celebrity likes about West Side Story but I will say that for some reason, I've avoided that movie for years. I've seen snippets here and there and thought, "meh." I know, I know, that's no reason at all to avoid a movie. But as I'm not a paid critic, I don't have to see it. :) But, I suppose one day I'll break down and see what all the fuss is about. Cool, cool, cool! ;)*

This movie wasn't anywhere on my radar until Cricket praised it and piqued my interest. Unfortunately, I didn't have as strong of a reaction to it as he did. I mean, it's a good movie, with good performances (although I'm skeptical that Voight and Fonda deserved Oscars for their roles), but for me there was a disconnect. For whatever reason, I just never felt invested in this story or these characters or their romance, which caused me to feel slightly bored with the movie. Even the soundtrack, which is admittedly awesome, is somewhat muted. I feared that the movie would slip into sentimentality or become too melodramatic. Luckily, that isn't the case, although I do think the anti-war message became a bit too heavy-handed toward the end.

absolutely, we've seen both multiple times and my roommate LOOVES powell, so we've seen countless movies of his ( he does love to wear his pajamas and his drinks in many of them lol). And yes, we always check TCM for all our classics and love listening to Osborne, and we did catch the fact that they had been divorced for 3 years when they did this.
I remember seeing one with Osborne and Drew Barrymore talking about her grandfather John, the movie Dinner at Eight and others.
And very true about Lionel, loved him in another Capra film You Can't Take it With You which had several side actors that would eventually play in It's A Wonderful Life
And I agree, Dressler's side remarks and the looks she makes are the delightful definition of sheer droll! :)

Morituri / Saboteur: Code Name Morituri (1965) rating_4_5 A very impressive "spy" flick set during WWII with marlon brando as a german demolition expert who is forced to discreetly search out and dismantle an unknown amount of bombs on a german ship carrying 7000 lbs of rubber and captained by yul brynner, so that the allied forces can take it without the ship being destroyed by the captain.
I've never heard of this one and it was an incredible find. It is tense, unflinching and it does not tread gently when it comes to those aboard this ship; which you find out with the opening placard: "Morituri te salutant is Latin for the salute gladiators gave at the beginning to every fight in the arena. Those who are about to die, salute you."

Glad you at least liked Coming Home, Captain Spaulding. A drama like that is so much harder to recommend to someone than an action or comedy film. It's just impossible to tell who will connect with the characters. Nice write-up on Out of the Furnace btw; I'm looking forward to that one.

Thank you. It's definitely one for my list of top sixties when we get to it lol
There's a great line in the beginning of the movie: when brando's character tells a british officer that: "You're a cold b@stard," and he responds glibly: "I come from a cold little island."

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

http://mackjackandjill.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/web-sewer.jpg

It took me forever to see this one and finally got around to it last night. I admit I was hesitant to see it because of it being rebooted so soon after the first trilogy. But Spider-Man was always pretty much my favorite comic-book character growing up, and The Lizard was my favorite of Spidey's villains. I was disappointed that the character of Curt Connors was included in the films but never got to display his alter-ego. So, I was very glad to see him here. Plus, the essential characters of Gwen Stacy and her father. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this as they did the origin story again. But it was done with enough originality that it worked for me. I'm looking very forward to the sequel coming out.

Straight Time (1978, Ulu Grosbard)

Considering its reputable cast, I was surprised more people hadn't heard of this film. This is an fervent character study, examining the role of a former convict in the sprawled out megalopolis of Los Angeles. What begins as a fairly restrained and engrossing piece, told much in the veins of Taxi Driver and Scarecrow, with that very distinctive 70s touch of American filmmaking, unfortunately transpired into a deficiently paced, fairly uneven film. Great performances and the proficient technical presence behind the camera put aside, this film did not have any 'real' story at its core, lacking this degree of existentialism and social pertinence that felt so apparent in its opening few acts. It's a good film, but considering the cast and its general premise, it had a lot of potential, therefore rendering it as a fairly exasperating viewing.

I'm a sucker for these type of horror films, and I went in with absolutely no expectations, so I probably enjoyed it more than most. I just recall being very impressed with its minimalist approach, something that feels almost disregarded upon in horror cinema today.

I watched this a few months back, and I think it's fantastic. I was drawn to it mainly based on the fact that Matt Johnson - a favourite musician of mine from the band The The - composed its soundtrack. Based on the real-life killings of Dennis Nilsen as far as I can tell, and it's chilling in how it shows serial killers to be part of everyday life. You never know who you're talking to.

Manhattan (1979) 3

My 5th Woody Allen film now, and I think it's a good enough sample to know what I'm getting. This was another enjoyable movie from him, and I think that is about the cap for me. I didn't watch any of his movies until recently because I thought he was such a creep, and his movies have done nothing to dispel that notion. In this one, he plays a 42yo dating a 17yo. There's certainly a place for that in film; it's just something that strikes me as symbolic with him. He's definitely a witty and fascinating character. This movie, like his others that I've seen, has plenty of great performances and dialogue. One thing I like very much about his films is that there are plenty of juicy roles for women; something that there's not enough of overall in film. I'll watch more of his films, and enjoy them, but I won't be falling in love anytime soon.

Straight Time
(Ulu Grosbard, 1978)

I've always had a problem with authority. If someone tells me to do something, I immediately want to do the opposite. My attitude has led to a few unpleasant encounters with authority figures in the past, whether it was teachers and principals in high school, or police officers and security guards nowadays. I find that people in such positions often abuse their power; they begin to think that they are better than everyone else, when often they're just clowns in a uniform. The parole officer in Straight TIme fits that bill to a tee. He's a smarmy, sleazy a**hole who makes life unnecessarily hard for Hoffman's character, Max Dembo. When Dembo reaches a breaking point and attacks and humiliates the parole officer, I felt a great sense of glee. This is a movie that gets it, I thought. No wonder we have so many repeat criminals when this is how you treat them.

That key moment in the plot marks a transition both for Dembo and the tone and direction of the movie. In the first half, we watch Dembo, fresh out of prison, try to go straight. Despite being harassed and unfairly treated by the parole officer, Dembo tries to re-join society by finding employment and a place to live. He even establishes a relationship with an attractive young woman at the employment agency. Although he spends time with friends who are former criminals and drug-users, he resists their temptations. Dembo's desire to live a normal life and leave crime behind seems earnest, so we, the audience, sympathize with him and root for his success.

Then everything changes. After he lashes out against the parole officer, his "straight time" is over and he reverts to his old criminal ways. At first, it seems like the system has left him with no other choice. I viewed Hoffman's character as a victim. But the movie has already revealed that he's been a lifelong criminal, in out of jail since a young age. Crime is in his blood, and that becomes increasingly evident as he commits more and more crimes less out of necessity, but because of an internal lust that requires fulfillment. The monster behind his eyes is a demon no different than that of an alcoholic or a drug addict. As it rears its ugly head, the meek and humbled Max Dembo of the first half seems like a stranger, a put-on, and I felt a bit foolish for relating to him so strongly.

The quiet, understated, engrossing character study of the first half transforms into a slightly more conventional, somewhat predictable crime film in the second half. But even if the scenes of heist-planning and bank-robbing look familiar, there's an extraordinary depth to the characters and their actions, thanks to Hoffman's phenomenal performance and the strength of the script in the first half, that isn't seen in most movies of this type, making Hoffman's character all the more real and frightening and heartbreaking.

Stalker (1979) 2.5

I loved the look and the sounds of this, and I enjoyed it overall, although it dragged for me at times. The subtitles hurt my enjoyment a little bit. If I watch a foreign movie, I prefer it be an action or horror. It's just as simple as if I'm reading the dialogue, I can't focus as much on what's going on. Another thing is that I have a hard time makimg out what it says sometimes, depending on the color in the background. This isn't the film's fault of course, but less dialogue is better for me. Stalker is not my kind of movie, but it showed me enough to at least understand it, when someone else calls it great.

This was really good. A bit slow moving in parts but I really enjoyed it. I liked how I cared about Pacino but sympathized with De Niro. Not many movies can do this for me. Just a really good movie.

The Graduate (1967)

I didn't really care for this movie. One thing that annoyed me was the over use of Scarborough Fair, they played the first minute (if that) three times in a row. If they used just an instrumental version it probably wouldn't have annoyed me but using the lyrics made me feel I was listening to the first minute on a loop. The other thing that bothered me was the relationship between Ben and Elaine. They had one really good date and then he stalks her the rest of the movie and she falls in love with him for this. However, despite my complaints about the movie, I can definitely see what a lot of people like about it. Just not my type of movie.

2

West Side Story (1961)

Wow, I didn't expect to like this one at all since I have found musicals in the past really annoying. I did find the dance fights a bit silly but the story (even though it was just Romeo and Juliet) kept me interested enough to continue with it.

Don't worry, cricket, this just makes you like most people in the world and is exactly why Hollywood makes the films it does, atm. Big, spectacle action films and gross out/slapstick comedies mean less subtitles for non-English speaking countries, which are now the main market.

Pacific Rim (2013)

http://www.techcult.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/pacific-rim-23.jpg

This is another movie I put off seeing because I thought it would be something like "Transformers Meets Godzilla," and it kind of is, but it's much better than that. It is with the fact that there are giant robots and giant monsters. But it's better, in my opinion, in that the robots are controlled from within by pairs of humans, and the monsters, as far as I can tell, are all CGI (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Not that there's anything wrong with the old Godzilla movies with humans in monster suits. :)

But there is plenty of good human drama, from Charlie Hunman and his past, Idris Elba and his "relationship" with Rinko Kikuchi (who is all kinds of beautiful), Max Martini and Robert Kazinsky as a father/son team, and good comedy from Charlie Day (doing his best Sam Rockwell imitation) and Burn Gorman as head-butting scientists, plus the added attraction of Ron Perlman as a black marketeer who makes money off parts from dead monsters.

I know I've talked about drama and comedy and dealing with human nature, in this, an action-monster movie. But it lifts it above the normal movie in this genre...say, Transformers, which a lot of people seem to hate. I don't hate them, but I like Pacific Rim more than those movies. I liked Independence Day but I can see where people have a problem with it. I liked this movie more than ID4. But that's just me. For me, it never flagged, the acting was good, the effects were super, and the comedy was just enough for me to not be overbearing. If someone dislikes this, I can understand, but for me, it's a fun ride, worth watching again.

Bernie (2011, Richard Linklater)

An aberrant slice of storytelling that finds Black in towering form. The same, however, can not be said for Linklater. It's a good film but its documentarian-like approach felt largely off-putting, and the film never seemed to concentrate around a compelling story, but more so a sequent of events. I understood its intent, but it lacked an insistent core, particularly from a standpoint of storytelling, and felt quite sporadic at times. Other than that, a humorous, offbeat, and mostly amusing film, but certainly not without its flaws.

Breach (2007, Billy Ray)

Despite its fair share of cliches, mostly grounded in the platitudinous writing, this is an enthralling thriller, told with a great deal of restraint. Considering the merits of the story, this could have easily been riddled with both propagandic overtones and fallacious distortions, but it manages to stay real and human throughout, repudiating from any political bias. Chris Cooper was forceful, and Ray's direction felt natural. The closing shot was chilling.

1.5
The first Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of my favorite horror movies. It's raw, visceral, disturbing, and full of dread. Instead of giving us a sequel in the same severed vein, however, Tobe Hooper decided to turn the chili-obsessed sequel into a goofy comedy. At least the tone of this third installment is closer in spirit to the original, but it's still a lifeless, clichéd, run-of-the-mill horror flick absent of scares or suspense. You'd think, at the very least, the movie would deliver some impressive gore effects, but even that area is lacking. It was fun seeing a young Viggo Mortenson ham it up, however.
