Get A Job
(Dylan Kidd)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/cc/Get_a_Job_Poster.jpg/220px-Get_a_Job_Poster.jpg
1
Getting a job right after college is hard, it's even harder to get one in your field of study. Despite this film's attempt at making it seem challenging, it comes off as pretty easy. Teller's frustration feels fake and the film makes it hard to find one single genuine character.
Miles Teller was an intern for months and was about to start his first day on the job being paid when he is surprisingly "let-go". Now he must go on the hunt to get a job and become a contributing member to society. Once he gets one, is he able to keep it? Or will his juvenile hi-jinks ruin it.
Here is a film that doesn't know what it wants to be. At one point it is happy to gross you our with a character drinking deer semen as a right of passage at his work, then vomiting it all over some co-workers, the next it wants to make a social commentary on millennials in the work force. The aforementioned gag is something you'd expect in an "American Pie" type teen comedy, but Get A Job doesn't seem to fit there. It wants to make a statement about the hardships of finding work and be a voice for a younger generation. It's an odd juggling act that fails to maintain both aspects. The comedy side is at best, smirk worthy, but you get a sense of Déjà vu when you realize you've seen these gags before in better films. I'm reminded of one scene where Teller has to give a urine sample to prove he is drug free, the scene seems lifted from Austin Powers and spray going everywhere. Funny, but done before and done better.
The characters are your cookie-cutter stereotype stoners all living in one house. Anna Kendrick is the generic girlfriend, given nothing to do, which is a shame and Bryan Cranston plays Teller's father, a man who loses his job and feels out of place with the youth of today. The film casually reminds us that there are other characters here in the story by jumping back to them every so often at their own jobs. The film feels disjointed in that aspect and as a whole is not funny, which is a crime for a so called comedy.

This is from the same director who made A Seperation, a brilliant movie in my mind. I thought this movie was a step below, but again there seemed to be strong drama created in a very natural way. The way the husband acted throughout the movie bothered me a bit. His way of going about things infuriated me, and I'm not sure if that was the intention. I also feel unsure as to what exactly happened during the central event in the film, although that may be intentional. Still, excellent performances and a strong story made this a great watch.

Haha, I was about write something up about this. I just finished it and it's aged wonderfully in the three years since I last saw it.
I'm totally in the Gareth Evans > Leitch/Stahelski group. I love how this movie powers through on personality and brutality. The actors really sell their characters through the former, even cliched ones like Uco and one as normally eye-rolling as Prakoso (I get that they needed to endear him to us in a short time but c'mon).
Anyways, gifs!

Aftermath. A terrible tragedy has aftershocks that result in another tragedy in this dark drama starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnie is an ordinary man whose world collapses around him when his wife and daughter are killed in a plane crash, the result of human error on the part of the Air Traffic Controller, whose life simultaneously collapses in the wake of his fatal mistake. But Arnie's grief, shock and growing anger at his inability to get a simple "I'm sorry" from anyone in the airline leads him to an unthinkable act... Big Arnie gives a powerful performance in this very good film based on a shocking true story.

2.5
It's hard to review Spectre as it tries to encompass so many aspects of the franchise. With Craig's 4th outing as Bond, the series has come almost full circle to the ridiculous absurdities of the older films. While some might lean towards appreciation for this direction, I found it distracting, inconsistent and a little boring.
While on a mission in Mexico City, Bond finds a rings with an octopus emblem, leading him to infiltrate and discover the sinister organization that has been behind everything, Spectre.
After a fancy one-take opening shot, the film fizzles out almost immediately. It's almost as if Mendes and crew got jazzed to make a slick opening, then used up all their excitement. The rest of the film unfortunately feels lazy in many aspects, mainly the direction, script and the most erroneous part; Craig's performance. It doesn't help that this film is coming off of the well liked Skyfall, which put faith back into the franchise after the lukewarm Quantum of Solace...which had the difficult task of following Casino Royale. See where I'm going here? This series almost feels like the original Trek movies. You get a good film, then a bad one, then a good one, then a bad one, etc.
As mentioned before, Craig seems to be sleepwalking through the performance here, so him mentioning his utter hatred in performing the character makes sense. Helping him in no way is Christoph Waltz as the villain. Does this guy needd Tarantino writing and directing him to give a stellar performance? After a lot of praise in Guardians of the Galaxy, people took note of Dave Bautista and Mendes includes him here as a henchman. Yet what do they do? They basically make him a mute and lean on his towreing figure as a performance. It gives us nothing for the character and he becomes nameless henchman #45.
Spectre wants to be both new and old and it feels clunky in the effort to please both sides of the fanbase. Impossible to escape torture device? Check. Bond escapes unharmed when he should be almost brain dead? Check. My eyes hurt from rolling so much. If this is the end flick for this current series, it ends on a whimper. Here's hoping they pull one more out and according to my math, it should be a good one.

I was able to knock out another film that I've been overdue to see, Black Caesar (1973). Ever since I ordered Francesco Rosi's Lucky Luciano (1973) on VHS, I've been on a retro craze. I figured another 70s gangster film would be a good one to order next, and I was right. The first half of Black Caesar is amazing. Filmed on location in Harlem, the 70 sleaze of New York is on full display with Tommy Gibbs (Fred Williamson) rising the ranks of the underworld doing hits on the street for the mob until he can grab a hold of Harlem for himself.
The film goes a little over the top for me with some of the action (especially the elimination of the Cardoza brothers in Los Angeles), but that's to be expected with the Blaxploitation genre. I'm a unsophisticated man who likes his hits simple, dirty, and on the street. Unfortunately there is a sequel when there shouldn't be: Hell Up in Harlem (1973), which embraces the preposterous, over the top, action (Williamson is in a scuba suit on the poster for crying out loud!).
It's Williamson who makes this film; holy **** is he good in this role. Too good, to the point where he easily outshines every other actor (including some of the ones who were actual gangsters Williamson gave roles to). With James Brown doing the soundtrack, you know **** is gonna get funky. The ending is satisfying poetic with James Brown singing I've paid the cost to be the boss. Again, unfortunately all that is erased with Hell Up in Harlem.
What surprised me the most is the negative reputation Black Caesar has. This film is ****ing good and I'm dissapointed that it has taken me this long to see it. I liked it soo much, that besides having the VHS, I'm probably going to invest in a Bluray copy.

Initial reaction: pretty good but wildly inconsistent. Goes from whimsy, environmentally conscious fairy tale to rousing eco-thriller and then abruptly back to a Spielberg-ian friendship.
Lots to be loved, though. The cast is all around phenomenal and committed to the heightened tone (Gyllenhaal goes absolutely insane in this), visual effects are wonderfully realized and never fall flat in their intimate moments and Bong Joon-ho proves he can do action better than most big budget entries (it'll be hard to top that chase scene) but it's the tonal shifts that drag it down. Themes don't stick the landing and It's lacking the narrative tightness of Snowpiercer and that films elegance in mixing message and story. It'll probably alienate a lot of viewers (coupled with Bong's already polarizing sense of humor).
Worth the watch, though, and it sure makes the case for Netflix as an exciting film producer. I don't really understand the apprehension here. If they can continue to deliver on heady, entertaining but more consistent films, then that should be reason enough for cinephiles to celebrate.
7/10

Edgar Wright Baby Driver (2017)
**** yeah, Edgar Wright! Okay. I don't feel like saying a lot, because mostly people should just watch it. Pay for a ticket. Go watch it. Support good original films. There really should be more films like this one, not necessarily in style, but in approach. Original and exciting films gives you something special. It just does. Even if it sucks. I may even dare say I'd rather see a bad original film that unfortunately missed its mark than another solid Marvel flick. When you aim for originality and the unsafe area of filmmaking, you may fail, but trust me all creative directors out there, we still love you. We still won.
Edgar Wright's Baby Driver is not a bad film. Let's make that clear for starters. But should I find some flaws, it's not quite as tightly constructed, written and edited as the best work from this man. Wright usually has a constant tempo to his films, going from action to dialogue scenes. This movie feels more like in the vein of more mainstream films the way that it is constructed, plot-wise, but in Edgar Wright's hands it definitely doesn't turn to actual mainstream. Edgar's script is not as tight and ready to pop like a spring, but maybe that's because it's his first solo effort. Or maybe he just wanted it that way.
There is a little wobbly middle piece in this film, but OH MY GOD can I forgive it for that when we get to a riveting build into a finale that knock your socks off leaving you wanting more. Because yes, I actually wanted like 90% of this movie to be the "visuals go with music" type deal. But when we did get that, UUUUH did we GET THAT. But I would have loved to see this movie flow better and smoother than it did, yet I can only say that the overall theatre experience I had is the kind us cinema lovers hunger for. When it really rolled, IT WAS A BLAST.
Go see it. Support original films. Thank you Edgar Wright.

I cried!
No matter what is the next project of Bong Joon-Hoo, I will be there! Okja just proved to me that he is one of the best directors in business today! An enviable filmography! The Host, Memories of Murder, Mother...
I am totally against the meat industry, I will never understand how so many people can eat 'corpses' of living beings that have been brutalized to satisfy a simple ego.
Some friends who watched the film were unanimous about the feeling of guilt after the film ended, but I believe that the reappraisal of their rotten habits of eating lives should not even be in their minds, unfortunately humanity is a lost case. That must be why I like so much to see violence and satisfy myself through the suffering of others, as long as it is fictitious of course, yet it only proves that we are all rotten.
I applaud the courage to expose this industry of egos which is the agricultural industry.
If you remember well, I live in Brazil, here is the largest forest in the world, which is incredibly destroyed every day by the meat industry. In fact, agriculture is the main cause of several of today's ecological problems.
But everyone is blinded by the taste of a fallen corpse... A corpse of a living being!

Baby Driver falls perfectly in line with Wright's previous films in style, but offers a bit more in dramatic tone and a little less in comedy. The film still has plenty of funny moments, but it depicts a slight change in direction for him and one that hopefully opens more doors for original films.
Baby, that's B-A-B-Y, is the getaway driver for a wealthy criminal, Doc, who plots out the heists and never uses the same crew twice. Baby insists he is done after one last job, but Doc is willing to threaten the lives of the people Baby loves, including his new waitress girlfriend Debora, if he doesn't pull one more stunt.
Going into a Wright film, you have a sense of what to expect. Hot Fuzz was a parody of action films to the point where a simple moment of putting on your jacket was made to look like a chaotic action sequence. With Baby Driver, Wright continues this style, but squarely plants the film itself into that world that Hot Fuzz was parodying. This is done with self awareness though, and never becomes a problem. Instead, it highlights the originality of the film and the world Wright has created. It's a heightened reality and music plays an important role in it. To the point where it feels more like a love letter to music than heist films. This is even more apparent when you realize that we never really get to see the heists. We stay with Baby in the car and subvert those expectations. We are with Baby and his music the whole way.
As I said earlier, music is important to this film and ever aspect of it revolves around that. Camera work, action sequences, character movements, dialogue, plot devices, the list goes on. For something that important, the music should be good. Wright manages to explore enough genres to please most people and I found myself really digging the playlists. Music is Baby's world and we live in it for 2 hours almost non-stop. To the point where when there is no music playing, it feels out of place. I fully expect people to go out and buy the soundtrack and at no point did I feel as if any of it was forced, like Suicide Squad.
I guess you want to know about the car chase sequences, those are thrilling for people looking for excitement. Wright gives us enough unique moments to make those memorable and it's needed because car chases are a staple in Hollywood movies. You want to see something new and Baby Driver delivers enough of a spin to make it seems fresh. The film balances itself out with plenty of small quiet sequences that focus on character. Baby's dedication to take care of his aging foster father is touching. They communicate through sign language, which adds another layer to the complicated character that is Baby. Then we have some tender moments with Baby and Debora. A love at first sight relationship that blooms due to charm, appreciation of music and the aspirations to just be on the open road.
Baby Driver is stylish and charges to you at full speed. With the camera almost constantly moving, it never feels slow, even in those quiet moments. The cast nail their roles with just a hint of self awareness. Spacey can be intimidating in his sleep and Foxx has no problem playing someone with a few screw lose moments. At the very least, when you walk away from this movie you can say that you had a fun time, this movie has plenty of those moments to make it great.

Raw (2016)
Slightly disappointed in this but that's probably more to do with my own expectations. It was good. Certainly not as disturbing or gruesome that I had expected and I had a few issues with the plot but its a decent effort. There's plenty of other French horrors that you will go to first but its ok for a rainy day.

I found that it was just too one dimensional.
Once we realise that this is all just an allegory / symbol for the pressures of society - we know that it's not really real. So there's nowhere else for it to go really.
That's what was so amazing about Neon Demon - in that there are loads of things that keep you guessing and thinking long after the film has finished. This was just straight up linear horror story masquerading as a metaphor for complying with social norms.
That said it was still way better than alot of other films released this year.

I liked that one quite a bit, I remember!
My friend has been a big fan for years. He would single out moments from the book that weren't the movie, telling me that the movie was a lot messier and not as well made (which I know is pretty typical). He also told me he liked the sequel "This Book is Full of Spiders".

Baby Driver (2017) - rating_3_5
It's that music video with Noel Fielding turned into a proper film, and I am totally on board with that.
While it was a little uneven at times, Baby Driver is full of energy and refreshingly stylish. The film is at its best when it blends the action on-screen to the beat of the soundtrack, in the same way Wright worked "Don't Stop Me Now" into Shaun of the Dead, and I would've loved to see more of that throughout the film. Strangely, I think I liked Jon Hamm's character a lot more than the titular Baby, who I found to be a rather bland and uninteresting. I wasn't very engaged when the plot focused on Baby and Deborah, but Baby alone in a car, or with the rotating cast of supporting characters worked really well.
Like the main character, I also suffer from tinnitus. Unlike him, however, I would make a terrible getaway driver.

Power Rangers (2017)
I came into this thinking this was going to be terrible but was surprised it was not that bad. I was of an era growing up with the original series and movie and man they are cheesy going back and watching them now. This did not really have the cheese and change the characters to be outcasts instead of goody goody teens. They were however very cliche characters and did not have too much depth to them. I guess the hard this with this movie was the demographic they were aiming for. It did not quite hit the mark for nostalgia and did not seem to hit the mark for new viewers of the franchise. If you go into it looking for a decent action movie with teenagers in it then it goes pretty well in that regard.
The CGI at times was a bit choppy especially when the character Kimberly jumps into the water at the start. Other times it was quite good with the Zoids in the final scenes of the movie. Overall it was pretty good but I think most of the criticisms come from the over saturated superhero market.
2.5/5 Stars

Robert Redford, Paul Newman
Was looking for a good poker film that wasn't Rounders and IMDB suggested this. Whilst it didn't contain the poker action I was expecting, bar one nice scene, I really enjoyed the film. Something of a lost art, the movie doesn't shy away from a long run time, really taking it's time and exploring, for lack of a better word, charming characters. Redford reminds me of Brad Pitt in terms of looks but I find him a far more interesting actor. Basically the movie is a good time which holds the test of time. I'd definately rewatch it.

Yes, but please don't equate the destruction of rainforests with agriculture. It is their (best) excuse, "to feed the people".

Maybe it was just the performance, but Baby is the weakest aspect of the film. There are elements there that add to the character, such as his relationship with his foster father and how they communicate.
My one complaint is:
Spacey never uses the same crew twice, but in the last heist he uses the same people again, just switched up. He has to know what a hot head Jamie Foxx is, he's too dangerous, so why include him on the team? Spacey is more careful than to let some lunatic with a killing fetish screw things up.

I felt that way as well.
Especially since the heist Bats was part of was much sloppier than the first one we see, and ended with a member of the crew needing to be disposed of. Spacey's character's choices in the last act of the film just seemed uncharacteristically reckless. While I get that he has a bit of a soft spot for Baby, his change after seeing that Baby was in love seemed strange to me as well.

I knew nothing about this film, before watching it in the cinema this morning. I went in totally blind.
I only learnt that it was Edgar Wright as the opening credits rolled.
In summary
In summary, it was a fun film, that had enough edge to it to make it different.
There was action and some surprisingly dark scenes that stood out from the bouncy feel of the rest of the film. There were also a few scenes and quips that raised a smile.
The soundtrack was excellent and overall it was a pleasant surprise.
I liked it

Meh. Bailed out fairly soon. Ben Stiller was cute, but a little of Adam Driver goes a very very long way.
Outbreak. A deadly African virus gets loose in a small US town, prompting an army lockdown as scientists desperately try to find an antidote before the contagion spreads. Dustin Hoffman leads an all star cast (Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, Cuba Gooding Jr) in this glossy mid 90s Hollywood take on the global epidemic scare. Entertaining enough, but the film bogs itself down with its unnecessary "military conspiracy" subplot (with Sutherland chewing every piece of scenery he can find), which feels a bit silly and distracts from the far more interesting (and scary) virus plot.

I do actually plan to but I found your rating deliciously hilarious. Such a brutal opening sequence.
S**t, that's probably not even the most brutal scene in the movie.
Question: does anyone else laugh when the guy in the motel get his arm shot off? I can't help myself in that bit. Something how the guy is just casually sitting on the bed in the dark followed by carnage.

Sad to hear it. I've had my eye on it for a bit. Jack O'Connell was fantastic in Starred Up, so I was wondering how he was in other films.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Finally got around to seeing this one in time for the upcoming third film. This being the second in a series, was really a thrilling time in front of the TV. Taking place ten years after the events of the first "Apes" film, the apes are living in the forests across from San Francisco. They live in an almost Utopian society, with an entire, elaborate complex built out of the forest. The production designers did a fantastic job on this one. Living at the very top in a tree house (not a normal "tree house" that kids play in) with his family is the leader of the apes, Caesar (played brilliantly again with motion capture and body language intensive work by Andy Serkis). Caesar and the rest of the apes believe that humanity has maybe died out since they haven't heard from them in a decade, but it's not to be. A group of humans from San Francisco, led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and a handful of friends, have come to seek out a dam within the apes' domain, in the effort to repair it so the humans can have power back in the city and really restart life. Problem is, the biggest jerk (Kirk Acevedo) is the one who knows most about repairing the dam. Caesar has a problem with a hateful ape from the first film, Koba, who is one of Caesar's closest friends. Koba will never forget the torture that the scientists put him through ten years and more prior. He is the one who starts the real bloodletting between ape and man.
This advances on the first film by leaps and bounds. The acting, the music, the aforementioned production design, special effects, action, tension, drama, just a whole, well-rounded movie from start-to-finish. Lots of fine acting from Serkis, Clarke, a brilliant Toby Kebbell doing motion capture and voice-work as Koba, who almost steals the movie, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Karin Konoval (a medium-built woman as the giant Orangutan!), and Judy Greer as Caesar's wife Cornelia. Really happy with this one.

Morgan (2016)
At a scientific site outside of the city, a "risk assessment consultant" must decide whether or not to pull the plug on a government-funded project where the scientists have created an artificial but very alive human. The government calls the being an "it" but the scientists treat it as a young girl and that's exactly what Morgan looks like. It is suggested that the consultant, played tensely and excellently by Kate Mara, was sent because of an incident that occurred in the nearby forest, where Morgan showed a bit of a violent side. Since then, she's been kept inside, in a sealed off, but transparent holding cell, where she is given every comfort. Mara is waiting for another person, a psychologist played by Paul Giamatti (who rocks in his smallish role) to test Morgan and make a recommendation on her future to Mara.
There are several fine actors playing the scientists and caretakers at the facility but the movie is ruled by three ladies: Mara, of course as Lee, the mysterious, tight-ass government employee; Rose Leslie as Amy, the doctor who truly loves Morgan like a sister or daughter and is loved in kind by Morgan; and lastly, a newcomer to me, Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Morgan. She is twenty-one years old in real-life, but looks twelve here, and her character, although physically tall, is only five. She does a fine job as the seemingly eager-to-please creation who holds many secrets. But she's not the only one. Excellent movie with several unexpected twists.

The light of the massive screen reflecting upon me while under the stars was gorgeous. Even in the light rain, It was pure movie magic. Gets better with every viewing.

I don't see anything special in any of the new apes films, they're probably the most predictable movies I've ever seen.

Not a great slasher from their best era. This one features actors rehearsing for a play, and someone is picking them off. It's not terrible for horror fans and does have it's moments, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Baby Driver (2017) rewatch
Yes, I went again already. A friend asked and I thought "why the hell not". It's a great cinema experience and you have so much fun, especially if you know and look for Wright's little details. And that also why I had no problem seeing it again.
I noticed a lot more of the graffiti on the walls in the opening sequences spelling out the song.
I also noticed Edgar's love for foreshadowing. When Baby was flipping through the channels at the beginning on the tv, it basically tells us what will happen. It opens with "you are so beautiful" an obvious reference to him meeting the girl. Then something about "how's that working out for you" and then the Monters Inc quote - both of which are used in the film at key moments. Then the last channel clip we see is some bull fighting and the commentator says he has tried everything, even horseback, but had to go to running to complete it. That's basically the finale. He gives up horse(power) to run from the police in a great action sequence. Pretty clever.
And then I saw the ending in jail the inmates had "D.O.C." written on their clothes. A short for the prison clearly but also a reference to who got him into this crap, Kevin Spacey or Doc.
The movie flowed a little better second time around and I appreciated the quieter scenes more and saw more in them. It's not quite a 4.5/5 yet but we are getting there....

I'm re-watching "Dawn" and I'm still amazed at how well crafted it is. It feels too rare seeing a film that balances popcorn entertainment and interesting, heady ideas and themes.
It's a nigh perfect character film. Everyone gets room to grow (I love the subtlety in Oldman's development). You also gotta appreciate how the film often plays as a silent one. Purely visual storytelling is always appreciated by me.
Side note/bemoan: I really, really wish J.J. Abrams had called upon the film's director and Cloverfield collaborator, Matt Reeves, for Star Wars.
He's infinitely more talented than the Jurassic World guy.

My wife picked this one out. Although I'm a big fan of movies based on true stories, I was never particularly interested in this story. I thought the movie was carried by Robert De Niro in the lead role. The only problem with that is I never forgot I was watching De Niro. I think it would have been more effective to have a lesser known actor play Bernie Madoff, but only if the rest of the movie had been better. There were plenty of effective scenes, but it was a little inconsistent. I love Michelle Pfieffer, but there was something about her performance or how it was written that screamed made-for-TV movie based on a true story. Overall I enjoyed it.

Great. Probably the only 3 hour movie where the film felt shorter than 3 hours for me. The performances from Lancaster and Schell are bloody fantastic! One thing that annoyed me was the pointless zoom ins, they are used extremely randomly when nothing surprising is about to be said. I see that the director has produced many well received films (Inherit the Wind, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner) and I'm very excited to check out all of them, mostly Inherit the Wind though because I find religion to be a VERY interesting subject.

Baby Driver
3/5 maybe.
Disappointing and awkward. Music is a big deal in my life, so I really should have liked this with how much was attempted to have it be such a part of the movie. On mobile at a bar, so I'll be brief. I don't really know what I expected. Characters were never exaggerated the way I think they should have been. Foxx did his best, but most of the cast only reached enough to be "super-cool" cliches in a vacuum of real world environments. The second opening "coffee" scene was technically spot on, just generic and never really set the pace; the rest of the movie seemed to follow the bar.
Lead felt as emotive as Hayden in Revenge of the Sith, with passive mumbled lines. That was odd considering his character quarks teased throughout. I expected him to burst into...something. At some point.
Honestly? This was a watered-down hybrid of The Kingsmen and Driver. With a twist of soundtrack from Guardians of.... Or maybe Almost Famous. Without the charm. Eh. Yeah.
Sorry to be so pissy on this one. In a few beers deep with a medium rare steak on plate so it is what it is ;)

Not as tight as the first (the first 20-30 minutes are a bit of a slog), but the rest of it is very solid and improves on the original more often than not. Also love Raimi's technical energy - that stuff stands out even more after having had to sit through the blandness of both Amazing... movies.

This was the first superhero film I've wanted to see in a couple years and it did not disappoint. Being darker and more violent definitely plays to my taste. I loved the characters of Logan, the vicious little girl, and the albino. The action was tremendous, and being greedy, I would have liked to have seen a little more of it. Like most superhero movies, it starts to feel a little long. My second favorite of the series after First Class.

Steve Jobs (2015)
An interesting, admittedly professionally made, albeit wobbly experimental film from Boyle and Sorkin. The three act structure is challenged here and uses three major product launches as a runway for Sorkins' energized motor machine of a script, which is admirably and expertly delivered by the cast and subtly directed by the director, though it unfortunately does tend to feel over the top in a small movie with a small setting and problems and characters that never feel quite as grand as they are because of the limited concept of the movie.
The movie often aims for something almost theater-like and operatic, which plays the movie up to some epicness that might be too grand for its own good. The concept and structure is, as mentioned, interesting but the essential absence of a "relief" or "conclusion" to the set-up style does make the movie feel slightly repetitive and like a build up with no pay-off. The pay-off is suppose to come from the character(s) and the relationships here, but the movie doesn't seem to have quite enough to work with or enough to be at stake for this to work. His former girlfriend continues to show up and want money and wants to be mad at Jobs and his co-worker continues to want to be acknowledged for his work. Some great conversations arise but the basis is honestly too thin.
Although often a little too much, Sorkin's script kept my attention and the talented cast kept this experiment from truly failing apart. I admire the attempt more than I love the result and I'm honestly split on how to rate this.

It surprises me that a film about this fascinating subject, which got great reviews from the critics, could be this bad. The story telling was uneven, boring, and there wasn't any chemistry between anyone in the cast-- with the possible exception of between the natives.:D
This gets 3 out of 10 stars from me, simply because of the captivating cinematography.

2 Days in the Valley. A delightful off beat comedy. The cast was probably considered to be a hip Hollywood ensemble cast in 1996. It worked! It features a young James Spader, and a show stealing performance by Danny Aiello, along with Jeff Daniels, Marsha Mason, Keith Carradine, Glenne Headly, and on and on.
The best part? A happy ending!! Doc's rating: 8 of 10 stars.

I'd rather Peele kept doing his own thing instead of getting wrapped up in franchise stuff, but I do reckon he's far from the worst pick for an Akira remake (and that's keeping in mind how ill-advised the whole venture would be anyway).

Keeping Up With The Joneses
(Greg Mottola)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b2/Keeping_Up_with_the_Joneses_%28film%29.png/220px-Keeping_Up_with_the_Joneses_%28film%29.png
2
Keeping Up With The Joneses treads familiar water. Not too long ago there was Central Intelligence, which also had a good looking government agent getting a civilian wrapped up in some trouble. Joneses tries to play it cool at first though, leading you on as to whether these people are good or not. Of course anyone who's watched the trailer knows the answer to this, but even if you haven't, there are no surprises in this run of the mill comedy, which relies heavily on charm of Galifianakis.
Jeff and Karen have sent their kids to camp and finally have some alone time in their house. At the same time, new neighbours move in across the street, they're tall, gorgeous people, who have traveled the world. Cue the jealousy of everyone on the block. But something doesn't seem right here, they are too perfect. This leads Karen to investigate and uncover the Joneses deep dark secret. Now their lives are at stake, but who can they trust?
The biggest mishap this film suffers from is predictability. The script works in so many obvious signs that nothing surprises you. You watch a scene unfold where numerous people use Jeff's computer...well, we know that is going to lead to something bad happening on it. Oh, this guy is responsible for this thing, these people are those people, etc. Joneses feels a little too by the numbers that it slogs around trying to find something funny in a script that lacks humour. The laughs come from the skilled comedians who know how to navigate such a mess. I give it props for circumventing the rude humour that too many comedies are throwing out there these days.
Galifianakis has been in roles where he plays both the big friendly guy, or the menacing loner. In the Hangover, with each progressing film, he becomes more and more vile, while in a film like Due Date or It's Kind of a Funny Story, he plays a softer character that we can be friends with. Here, he falls into the later category. As the HR department rep at his work, he feels like a push over that nobody likes. Despite this, he always has a positive attitude and pleasant demeanour. His wife, in typical comedy fashion, is beautiful and is played by Isla Fisher. Their marriage has lost the fire over the years and the predicaments they are put in now, just so happens to push their primal instincts closer together. Fisher, the worn down house wife gets the chance to be sexy and spark something in the relationship.
Hamm and Gadot play the new neighbours, the Joneses. Hamm is no stranger to comedy, he's able to navigate those waters effectively. Here, he's not given that much to do though, he must be the straight guy. Gadot is good on the eyes, but bad on the ears. Her accent makes it difficult to hit the comedic timing needed to pull off a laugh. So the filmmakers decide to play up the sexy angle and have her strut around in tight black outfits, sexy lingerie or short dresses.
Trailers show the funniest scenes all the time, making the impact very minimal when you finally watch it. Many trailers have a "the" moment that people wait for, I remember this one having Galifianakis scream into his tie for back-up, which is funny. That scene is not in the movie at all, which took me out of the moment because I was expecting it. Not a slight against the film, but the overall process of marketing movies in general. I had expectations, they were not met, I was taken out of the film and wondering why. If something like that is easy enough to distract me, then I guess the film isn't that engaging.

Still a decent summer movie though.

From the noirs list, a private detective gets framed and his secretary tries to help him. Lucille Ball plays the secretary in the only movie I've ever seen her in. She was good, but seemed out of place in a noir. I liked Mark Stevens as the PI and William Bendix as a goon. The movie has that great noir look and uses music in a very natural way. It's a solid movie, but it was not especially riveting or exciting. I don't think it'll stick in my memory.

I also can't believe i forgot 12 Angry Men. I know it won 50s here, and it really is a genial film like everybody says it is.

The Philadelphia Story was somewhat of a disappointment, mainly cause of the three leads. They executed it weak, imho. Kate's always annoyed me anyhow. Even though I'm terrified of her. Who isn't? Not that the story's weak, there's humor in it, especially at the beginning, but as the so-callled romance increases :o. No, it's not that, it really is annoying. Cukor's directing's likeablethough.
I heard that the critics absolutely trashed this . The high rating makes me sort of interested
I also wouldn't say it is a piece of art and I will be remember this movie till I die, but like the plot - it's unusual. It is a great compliement for a movie, because I've seen many, many films and I think it's not easy to fancy something new. I'm sure You have also a feeling many times during watching diverse movies, that You've seen it somewhere before:suspicious:.
As I wrote, Will Smith suprised me with his good acting. There was Helen Mirren who I love :love:and Kate Winslet. Edward Norton was not so brilliant and I don't fond of Keira, but they were just ok.
And to be honest, there aren't many critics with who I agree. I prefer journalists, who are in cinematography field and of course I read MoFos and other watchers opinions.
IMO it is decent movie:)

Shattered Glass (2003)
True life story of journalist Stephen Glass who wrote for the political magazine The New Republic until it was found out that more than half the stories he'd written for years were mostly fabricated. The way the movie presents him (as played by Hayden Christensen...no groans, please :)) is as an eager-to-please writer whose constant reply to being confronted about anything is "Are you mad at me?" When asked for numbers of his contacts or sources for the stories, he always says he "has the notes at home." It's fairly impressive (in a negative way of course) how long he puts his bosses off when his lies start to rise to the surface. His first editor is played excellently by Hank Azaria as an easy-going man who believes and believes in his mostly young workers and usually doesn't question them or their sources. The fact that he doesn't get along with the publisher of the mag only makes them like him more. When he's forced to leave The New Republic. one of Glass's fellow writers, Charles Lane (a fine Peter Sarsgaard) is given the editor's job and everyone is tense as to how good of a boss he'll be. So when an internet journalist (Steve Zahn) and his co-worker (Rosario Dawson) start to find major errors in the Glass stories and the nonexistence of the sources cited by Glass, Lane is not as easy-going as the first editor and starts his own internal investigation to try to head off the damage he sees coming to his magazine. For those who don't like Christensen, this is probably the third role I've seen him in outside of the Star Wars films where he does a great job as the young man who wants to do a good job and be accepted but can't seem to tell the truth to save his life. Sarsgaard is really excellent as he grows less and less patient with Glass, leading Glass's co-workers to take his side. Two of his more loyal co-workers are Chloë Sevigny and Melanie Lynskey who are also fine. Very riveting drama, well worth seeing.

RocknRolla (2008)
Guy Ritchie-directed flick, with his usual cast of crazy characters, lots of violence, but with an extreme dose of humor running throughout. Stories cross, crisscross, double back on each other, etc. etc, but it somehow all resolves itself. London's top mob boss (or so he considers himself), played by Tom Wilkinson is trying to do business with new-in-town Russian gangsters over real estate, but a priceless painting belonging to the Russian leader left in Wilkinson's care is stolen, and the search is on for it. Meanwhile, a trio of Wilkinson's underlings (played hilariously by Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, and Tom Hardy) are busy ripping off hundreds of thousands from various Russian hoods, who may be connected to Wilkinson's friend. And...the painting was taken by someone Wilkinson knows, then is taken by someone else and makes the rounds; people who are after each other barely miss each other; Thandie Newton is an "accountant" who takes the money that Butler has ripped off; Wilkinson's right-hand man, played by Mark Strong, is on the lookout for Wilkinson's missing rock and roll star of a stepson, who's played by Toby Kebbell who is hilarious as the constantly stoned loser whose records are climbing the charts because he's been reported dead. Pressure keeps building all the way through with everybody (including many I haven't mentioned) trying to please the bad guys or face the consequences while certain of the lower ranks don't care and do what they can to mess things up. Oh, and Gemma Arterton puts in an appearance as a "Girl Friday" at a recording company, which is a good thing. Hilarious stuff.

It's been a while since I've seen a film so cruel and mean-spirited. That being said, I was thoroughly engaged throughout, the acting was excellent across the board, and the tension is palpable. One of Tarantino's most interesting films, for sure.

Best movie I've seen in a long time. Years. Like since the last Potter. I see it three ways: you have showing of the brutal machinery that, in this case, TV networks are, but that's just almost random, everything's a brutal machinery. With Faye being the devil (a thing she has a thing for, I've rarely seen her otherwise, or at least not disturbed) and robert her assistant. I don't get it why people love movies who picture an evil. To show you it's evil? If you already know that, you don't like to be reminded of it, right? If you don't, at least for myself, I'd rather remain in ignorance. So it's not that. The second is the fact that William gets out of there alive. That's positive. But I've had enough of that, too. all the seriousness and everything. It's humor for me. Peter completely steals the entire show and should've won an Oscar. But there are so many such cases, it's easier to mention when the academy got it right. Very rarely.
Like in the beginning when he talks to William in a bar
- I'll kill myself.
- Will you cut it out already!
- Maybe i should do it on air.
That's so insane, hell it even reminds me of something John would do.
My favorite scene is with Ned. When he gives that insane speech across the table, and Peter goes again:
- Why me?
- Because you're on television, dummie!

Why do so many people compare Baby Driver with Drive? They are very different films.
I started to reply to this, but now 5 paragraphs in I think I may wait to refine that one a bit! I'll leave my first initial response though.
Please know that I did not enjoy Baby Driver. So much so that I'm borderline offended by it. Yeah, I'm not sure I can explain that one so easy.
I referenced Drive in my comments not for tone, but because it is a recent, approachable story for comparison of boy drives car for bad guys, boy falls for girl, girl is endangered because of boy's associations, then boy redeems self. All while being more successful at the game (my opinion, of course). Baby Driver is quite literally a baby brother version of this arc. With less tension. With more goof. Whether that was intended or not is beyond me. I have to assume so, based on the director's style in other movies, but it just felt so flat. Especially when compared to past movies.

This is one of my favorite movies.. It's cool how each person can have their own interpretation... I see the movie trying to show how much of an influence mass media has. And people like Howard Beale (or the current media) have a "personality" and they fall for the myth, too.
The short speech by Ned Beatty says it all. If there is a devil, it's him, or maybe it's the dollars, shekels, IBM, etc....
Even though the news division started to make money, he "meddled with the forces of nature" (market system) and "God" made sure he changed his personality to a cynic -- loss of hope and purpose is easy to control.
Fay Dunaway is the loser, has always been... She grew up on Bugs Bunny.. As Holden tells her "TV is all you know" -- and then tells her (about leaving her) "Back in my day we called it SIMPLE HUMAN DECENCY".
The rest are cogs in a wheel... but notice they don't enjoy anything. Many of the characters are old but have led nothing but empty lives, and just focus on what they talk about, even in their spare times.... (Talking about ratings while having sex... not achieving climax until she imagines an amazing number of viewers).
And for a 20-share, they'd kill ANYONE on live TV...

Hatred, fear, going against another cause you hate them, not cause youll get a mil if you kill them, or even worse going against yourself.
But you're right, hadn't notice Ned as the evil.
I guess Peter isn't the only one who got killed on live TV because his ratings went down. Did something like this actually happen?
His ratings only went down because "God" (in Beale's words) told him to stop grinding his axe about the deal with the Saudis.... Imagine seeing Beale before, and then after the Beatty meeting, the first thing he says "There's nothing we can do...."
Have you seen "A Face In The Crowd"?

damnit! I lost my reply forgetting it was down here, by clicking one the menu above ERGH!!!
Ok. It was something about Chungking Express. Renting the VHS in college. Not remembering the name, but failing for years trying to find it by watching movies with similar names. All I remember was this depressingly poetic guy pining over a wet wash cloth as if it represented the girl of his dreams. He twisted the wet cloth until water seeped out, then romanticized it as crying in sadness.
I'm pretty sure this is that movie, but I've yet to find a copy to watch for myself. The few times I've read anything on it, it did NOT seem to be the same movie. But I defiantly think that it is, and there must be some conspiracy theory explanation of a secret world order, order type of group for misleading me all these years. I also believe it was a Quentin Tarantino Presents type of thing. I am 98% positive this is that movie. I just need to find it now. grrrr.
Damn you, shadowy belly-villain Guild of Calamitous Intent agents of evil!!!! I will prevail!!!

I enjoy those movies too. But they are all kinda sad, no?
Alien Intruder (1993) - Would have made an alright 30 minute TV episode...definately did NOT make a good 90 minute feature, did have a few funny dialogue deliveries but for the most part Padding central - 2/10
Peter completely steals the entire show and should've won an Oscar. But there are so many such cases, it's easier to mention when the academy got it right. Very rarely.
Peter Finch did win a Best Actor Oscar for Network.

From the noirs list, the story had a bit of a political side to it which I'm not generally a fan of. I lost track a little bit with who's who as far as so and so did this and so and so said that. I sometimes had trouble placing the name with the character, not an uncommon difficulty for me. It didn't matter because I was very entertained. I give a lot of the credit to Alan Ladd, who I seem to really like in every movie I see him in. William Bendix plays a goon, a role he's very good at, and he's become maybe my favorite character actor from the 40's. Then there's Veronica Lake, always a doll. If she wasn't the size of a doll she'd probably be near the top of my all time would like to bang list. There's a couple other good performances as well from people I never heard of before. It was definitely worth watching.

Love this movie. I loved how the one vampire kept going to the Nosferatu-looking vampire (who seems to be in his coffin about 90% of the time) and offloads his troubles on him, and the coffin vampire just looks at him like he could care less (at least I think that's the look he's giving---it's hard to tell but that's my take). Hilarious stuff!

Murder By Numbers
(Barbet Schroeder)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/45/Murder_by_Numbers_film.jpg/215px-Murder_by_Numbers_film.jpg
2.5
I hate to call this film 'by the numbers', but that phrase seems to fit it perfectly. The film fails as a crime thriller, but is a surprisingly decent look inside the minds of two deranged killers obsessed with murder. Had the film decided to focus mainly on Gosling and Pitt's characters, this would have been a lot more memorable, but instead it finds time to try and make Bullock's detective a more interesting character, when there is nothing really there.
Loosely based on the Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb murders (as is Rope), Murder By Numbers sees Richard, a wealthy and popular student team up with Justin, a smart and introverted student, to plan the perfect murder. Once completed, they take the game a step further by engaging with the detective on the case, who has her own demons from her past she can't seem to shake off.
Bullock gives us a rather unlikable character and the scenes with her and her partner, or even her problems with a previous killer are unbearably uninteresting. When the film focuses on her so called relationship it falters. When it has Gosling and Pitt on the screen, then it becomes rather engaging. Gosling gives us an unhinged and overly confident performance and a young kid with a big ego. Pitt plays his usual awkward low talking self. It works here and the movie is good when these two play off each other and their sick plotting of the murder.
The back and forth between Bullock and the two guys are fun, but it soon reaches a rather lame climax that is literally a cliffhanger. As a whole, the movie feels underwhelming, which is a cardinal sin for a cop-killer flick.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
I didn't know what to make of this movie. I went into it weird having just seen Midnight Cowboy (1968) for the first time. A movie that showcased a man attempting to pimp himself out in New York. Basically, a movie where traditional values are turned on there head. Breakfast started with the two main characters seemingly doing the same thing, pimping themselves out for money albeit in a more subtle way.
Following this the movie or my mind settled down and it became a sort of character study and romance although there are the odd bits of humour thrown in, when I say odd I mean odd (Asian man anyone?). Audrey Hepburn, the movies focus is stunningly beautiful. I can't say I have seen a better looking female for a long old time. She commands the screen with her looks, vitality and craziness. I could have said quirkiness but it's to light a word. She is 50 shades of crazy.
As much as she is attractive and different she is hard to pierce, she's hard work, like squeezing water out of a stone and thats how I felt about the movie as a whole. There was interesting themes, superficially interesting characters but nothing deep was explored or resolved. We never really got to the heart of anything I felt. A rather plain but likeable guy falls in love with a stunning but strange woman and thats it. Nothing to make you think like how Midnight Cowboy made you think.
I'm happy to give it another go, well into the future, but in my opinion it didn't hold up well. I'm glad I watched it though and it really was a terrific performance by the smoking hot Hepburn.

Dead End
(Jean-Baptiste Andrea & Fabrice Canepa)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b4/Dead_End_movie.jpg/220px-Dead_End_movie.jpg
2.5
Dead End is a low budget, spec script type flick that a horror fan would stumble upon and appreciate "finding it" when others have no idea what it is. Originality helps separate horror films that are a dime a dozen these days and Dead End makes a decent attempt at this, but at some point gets lost on the same endless road the characters find themselves on.
On Christmas eve, this family, along with the daughters boyfriend, decide to take a short cut to get to a family dinner. After almost getting hit by a car, they eventually find out they're lost. They meet this young woman in white, but strange things start to happen and dead bodies start to pile up. All of this happens on a road that never seems to end.
I feel as if Dead End is proud of the ending, which isn't bad per se, but one that feels familiar. Maybe if it weren't so enamored with itself in regards to the end, I would have appreciated the effort a bit more. I was enthralled by the mysteries happening within the woods and the endless road, which Thomas Jane's Dark Country seems to borrow from. A film like this, you can throw all kinds of weird at me and I'll accept it.
The script is okay, but the dialogue is the handicap here. It doesn't help that the actors (except for the parents) struggle with their performances, which end up crippling the dialogue even more. Lin Shaye, known for her recent horror turn in the Insidious franchise, plays the shell-shocked mother. I could have used a bit more from her, she is better than the kids, but it's Ray Wise who holds the film together.
The direction of the film is strong and may be one of the reasons this has such a big cult following. They did a fantastic job creating a creepy atmosphere on an isolated road. Creative use of the darkness and headlights from cars made the film feel a bit better than a Direct to Video marketed flick. I'm surprised to see they didn't jump start a career in the genre as this showed promise. Suffice to say, I can see why this film has fans, but I'm not too sure if I am one of them.

Last couple...nothing life changing, but still enjoyable.
Chips - went in expecting nothing due to atrocious ratings and critic/friends reviews. Wouldn't say it's a great flick, but I enjoyed it. The chemistry between Dax and Ponch was funny. I'd give it a 7/10 I guess.
Power Rangers - again, went in expecting nothing, but ended up enjoying this movie. Even the slowness it over at. People complained they don't suit up till the end. I'm ok with that. I actually thought the film was worked when they eventually suited up. Would not recommend as a "good" movie, but I enjoyed it. Again...7/10
The Belko Experiment - had been wanting to see this one. It was brutal. Very violent and graphic, but I wouldn't call it torture porn. Just very bloody. Moved at a brisk pace and was fairly mindless. I enjoyed it. If you're into this style of movie, check it out! Thumbs up.
Moved recently. Dumped cable and Internet and only had one DVD left out. Blades of Glory. A ridiculous movie. But after having it onnin the background for 3 or 4 viewings, I began to really love it. Ferrell and Heder (sp?) are very funny together. Lots of great lines. Can't recommend it as a good movie, but it has def climbed some rungs on my movie ladder!!

A bloody brilliant movie. Soul of the movie is Holden's cynical narration, imho. I can't believe that at the beginning as we see a dead man lying in apool
Look at there. there's somebody lying in the pool. ah, just nobody, really. Just an unsuccessful hollywood writer. But he always wanted a pool. So,he got himself a pool. He's in a pool now. But the price was a little too high.
And then

holden and Gloria are among my fave actors. Geniuses.
But the thing is, as much as i love Wilder, he took it too far this time. The humor is so dark, it crosses the line of morbidity. Still, even though i prefer S. O. B., this is a timeless masterpiece and it deserves even more credit than it gets, which S. O. b. doesn't unfortunately, but that's another story. It really did offend and hurt practicaly the entire Hollywood, it's a very nasty littly revenge number of Blake's who was in a hate relationship with it. (Not that he's the only one). I read even Lucas hates it. Just one more sentence before i get off topic - S. O. B. is unique in that it's the only movie nominated for the best and the worst movie of the year.
