Oh Lucy (2017)
This is a straightforward but unusual American-Japanese film that starts out as a comedy, but morphs into an intense drama with a gratifying ending.
It stars the talented Shinobu Terajima as a Tokyo office worker who gets a crush on her American English language teacher, who unfortunately is having an affair with Terajima’s niece. And her sister is not happy about any of it.
The film is based upon an award winning short film of the same name by Atsuko Hiraynagi, who also directed both.
I was quickly drawn into Terajima’s character, Setsuko. What appeared to be happening in the first act was not what was happening at all, and the story seamlessly transitioned into a different scenario. Happily what fears the viewer has for Setsuko’s fate are nicely relieved by the satisfying ending.
I’ve not had the opportunities to view many Japanese narratives in film, beyond a few of the older standards. But this is a very enjoyable picture, and I’d be looking forward to any other work by either Hirayanagi, or Terajima.
For our posters who are more accustomed to Japanese films in general, or this movie in particular, perhaps you might recommend some similar pictures.

I sat down to watch this with very little knowledge about the actual film. I have glanced over a few reviews and see that many are split on how good or bad the film is. I personally wind up right down the middle. It had it's moments and it eventually devolved into something akin to a Stephen King novel, and not one of the better ones. There were some nail-biting moments and some "oh hell no!" scenes, but there just were not enough of them. Colette really carried the film though and I think if the story was written just a little better it would have gotten over that hurdle for me. Byrne really fell flat as the father though - maybe he was supposed too, but I normally like his acting. Not so much in this one.

Decided last nite to have another look at this original version of the imfamous airborne Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7,1941. After a slow paced first half..the flick finally sprang into life with spectacular visuals of the attack. So satisfying to not see a computer graphic within cooee of this fine war film. The storyline was compelling as it was told from the aspect of both of the combatants. The cinematograhy was spectacular, the soundtrack stirring.. My only complaint was the stilted acting by some of the cast. For those not initiated into the Japanese language.. I included.. Tora means "lightning attack," indicating that when Tora was repeated three times that the objective of complete surprise had been achieved. It was indeed a "surprise attack" due to some monumental blunders by both the Japanese and the Americans...all of which are depicted in the film.rating_3_5

Ready Player One (2018)
What a ride! Spielberg covers all the bases in this breathtaking journey through reality and fantasy. The CGI and special effects wizardry enhance a nicely traditional love story which anchors a modern trendy sci-fi/video games story line.
Arguably Spielberg is one of the only figures in Hollywood with the clout to have obtained rights for references to all the copyrighted films, TV shows, music, video games, etc. used in the movie. Reportedly the legal team took several years to obtain contractual permissions from a whole spate of works before filming could even begin. A few refusals caused script changes. There were sustained and immensely impressive segments involvingThe Shining and Saturday Night Fever, for example. Reportedly there were over 100 references to productions from the 1970s to the 2010s.
This is a Spielbergean good-natured film imbued with the fascination of E. T., and the urgency of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The casting was first rate, which included the brilliant Mark Rylance, Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg; and starring Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cook, who could have been the reincarnation of James Dean and Natalie Wood.
The film was absorbing, charming, funny, and hugely enjoyable without the common contemporary crutches of gutter language, gratuitous sex, and breaking the 4th wall. To that end I enjoyed this film much more so than films such as Deadpool 2.
My guess is that this picture will have special appeal to those over 35, and under 20. But Spielberg has shown that he’s still the master producer/director, even at 71 years of age.

Supreme potboiler good vs evil and love will out. James Mason is great in . Robert Ryan is pretty good too being a total manipulative *****. The love interest (Miss Ellie) is, in all honesty, pretty ropey but she's not asked to act much.
Contains the most disturbing and incongruous ending of a film I have ever seen. Its honestly mental. 5/10.

Fassbinder adaptation of a Jean Genet novel. The intrigue is kept pretty high around the murderous main man. Very camp but also with a real heart. Some of the backdrops are very theatrical and the acting quite stagey but Brad Davis is great. I enjoyed this curio. Franco Nero as a repressed homosexual seafaring Captain gets this extra points :) 7/10 and I'd have loved to see Brad Davis make many more films.

This multi award-winning film rates among my top three of all time. Rebecca, the screen adaptation of the book by noted author Daphne Du Maurier has it all, sublime acting, (all three leading actors won Academy awards) a pulsating soundtrack driven by a plot of mystery and intrique to keep the most demanding begging for more. First time director Alfred Hitchcock maintains the tension at a steady level until the shattering ending..
The storyline centres on the isolated mansion of Manderlay and its inhabitants..the mysterious housekeeper Mrs Danvers, Max De Winter (Laurence Olivier) and the new Mrs De Winter. (Joan Fontaine) She soon discovers that she must live in the shadow of her husband's former wife Rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier. Stealing the show imho is Australian Judith Anderson for her rivetting performance as the disturbed Mrs Danvers.
Rebecca, Hitch's first American film and for which he was awarded the Best Director Oscar, is a must see for devotees of gothic mysery. rating_4_5

I found it very scary and at times disturbing. It’s not great but one of the better horrors I’ve seen since the conjuring 2. Better than IT, better than Get Out.
The subject matter truely creeps me out on a personal level...Spoilers!! (Sorry I’m using my phone) witchcraft the occult. It interests me and frightened me....when done well of course. This was done well but there are questions and character motivations I want answered. Maybe I’ll wait for ironpony to bring it up.
I would like to applaud the director. His first feature length movies...very well done. a classy entry, the tension was palpable and no reliance on the cheap jump scares. The plot though, leaves me wanting...some answers.
Don’t cringe mofos but the best horror I have seen in recent memory is the conjuring. Nothing has surpassed that since. Masterpiece horrors I would say would be the exorcist, rosemary’s baby and Texas chainsaw...the conjuring just misses that mark - for context.
This film gets 3.5 / 5 impressive enough.

It was that different and better watching it on the bigger screen?
Yes, practical effects on a large screen with incredible sound picks up all the details that bored me watching it at home. And the chapters work better with an intermission
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is another film that I think is practically unwatchable on TV.

And yet The Conjuring is taken from events that happened :). I liked it very much too although it was familiar territory, so perhaps didn't make as much of an impact on me for that reason. I need to see The Conjuring 2 asap.
There are two newish horror films that I always like to recommend, Entity (2012) and The Daisy Chain (2008).

I fear for Die Another Day…;)
It was that different and better watching it on the bigger screen?
Yes, practical effects on a large screen with incredible sound picks up all the details that bored me watching it at home. And the chapters work better with an intermission
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is another film that I think is practically unwatchable on TV.
This just makes me want to get a bigger tv and get a sound bar or sound system. Feel my viewing experience is lacking.

Doris Day isn't beautiful (awful hair) but very charming.
This time I've noticed as many moments in this movie could be controversial nowadays. For example Tony, a son of one of the client, who could be accused of attempt of a rape or the last scene, when Rock Hudson is carring Doris Day to his appartment throug whole city against her will. On the other hand I would say Doris Day character is a feminist as she is completely independent and a man isn't a whole world for her.
Those thoughts are aside. Charming movie.

Great parable tale from Haneke. This could have been set in any community and at any point in time. Here its in a Northern German village where the powers that be are (or seem to be) manipulating the lives of those around them to maintain servitude and ignorance. It's impeccably shot and the black and white filming lends to its other-worldliness/timelessness. I loved this film and Haneke always keeps the grey matter working. Great. 9/10.

"But Balthazar was so boring, I slept through it. This Balthazar, I didn’t understand a word of it, it was so completely boring. A donkey, to me, is completely uninteresting, but a human being is always interesting."
To me, the other way around. Loved the donkey scenes but the human beings, meh. I felt this film was going on forever but it's only 95ish minutes long... really wanted to like this film.

Die Another Day 2/5 (2002)
Haha I loved Die Another Day. It's so over-the-top.
He's Out There (2018) - 7/10
A mix between The Collector (2009) and The Strangers (2008). Not particularly original but decent for a horror film not released in theaters. I liked the mask the antagonist wore and it didn't hurt too have Yvonne Strahovski fine tail in it. The two young children are also great especially the youngest Abigail Pniowsky - she was amazing.
This has been on my watchlist for years but my general dislike to Haneke's films has kept me from watching it. One day I will (and hopefully it'll be a Haneke film I can enjoy).
To be honest, if you haven't liked any Haneke, you probably won't like this one either, since he definitely keeps the same energy, tone, and everything that's "Haneke", from the rest of his films. I will say that The White Ribbon is his best film, when it comes to visuals and cinematography.
I've only seen Hidden and The Piano Teacher – both very good.

I haaated this back when I've first seen it. I partially agree with both of you and Bergman, since I thought both the humans (which honestly were just cardboards, but that's Bresson for you, so whatever) and the donkey, and pretty much the entire "story", were all painfully uninteresting.

A rewatch, but the first time watching since I've been married haha. I loved this movie back when I was single, and it still has the same emotional impact on me now. A Quiet Place - Late to the party with this one. I had obviously heard of the Oscar buzz before I watched it and had reasonably high expectations. Performances were solid across the board and the story, while simple, was completely unique. It was incredibly tense in parts, but I wasn't as immersed in the film as I had hoped. Maybe I missed the boat with not watching it in the cinema.
In any case, worth a watch.

The Headless Woman by Lucrecia Martel - 3
https://criticsroundup.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/the-headless-woman-still2-526x295.jpg
After loving what I got from La Ciénaga, Lucrecia Martel decides to take slow pace to a whole other level. Despite my liking for all of the showcased thematic aspects, such as the contrast between classes in Argentina, along with the bourgeois guilt, and so long and so forth...It's all been done before, and in a better way. The lead was pretty fantastic though, with her little is more manner of performing her paranoid character. Overall, pretty good, but for such a short film, I felt every second of it.
Play by Ruben Östlund - 3.5
https://www.theskykid.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Play-2011-Movie-review.jpg
I loved how frustrated I kept feeling throughout the film, which was the intended effect. It reminded me of my experience with Matteo Garrone's Reality (a different but better movie, that I would highly recommend). I guess Play would be a more fleshed out and focused portion of the director's latest movie, since every thematic element that is present here, is also present in The Square. By being that, it becomes too on the nose at times, and especially during the ending. It was nice seeing Östlund's development from Involuntary (an earlier entry by him that I've seen recently and enjoyed) to his Palme D'Or winning feature, but Force Majeure still remains my favourite of his.
Hereditary by Ari Aster - 4
http://s3.amazonaws.com/quietus_production/images/articles/24789/hereditary-movie__1__1529101145_crop_550x299.jpg
Oh, I can't wait to watch this again, especially with the countless little details scattered all around, that will be easier to pick up on and enjoy with multiple viewings. It's still extremely enjoyable and effective throughout the first watch, despite me not fully grasping the story and the happenings, and only getting the gist of it. The family's dynamics and struggles are my favourite aspects of the film, especially with Toni Collette delivering a 10/10 performance, while her castmates are not that far behind her either. Definitely deserving of the hype.

THE PICTURE SHOW MAN: (1977) .
This rather obscure Oz flick depicts the beginnings of cinema in Australia. It is the 1920s and an enterprising man, his son and a piano player travel around Australia showing the first silent movies. Their dream however is to stay at one place and open up a cinema. Muddying the waters is a hot shot wealthy American who aims to do the same.. bigger, better and in quicker time than the Australians...
I enjoyed the journey this slice of early Australiana took me. I had no problem sympathizing with and relating to the characters as the cast of John Meillon, Rod Taylor and John Ewart were top shelf. Loved the cinematography of inland Australia, while the score and incidental music complemented the pacey, amusing storyline. For those who are not familiar with this gem. I invite you to find it and watch it.

I'm easy to please and I thought mixing a robbery with weather disaster sounded like fun. It could have just been mediocre for me to enjoy it but it fell short of even that. No decent characters, performances, or dialogue, and even the special effects were poor. I sometimes compare bad movies to Lifetime movies but in this case it'd be an insult to Lifetime movies. This was like a USA movie and I'm surprised it made it to the cinema. It wasn't the worst movie to sit through, but even then movies I've had a worse time sitting through came down to taste. This was just lousy and stupid.

Rebecca, Hitch's first American film and for which he was awarded the Best Director Oscar, is a must see for devotees of gothic mysery. rating_4_5

I got this from Netflix and it was the first Japanese film my wife was to try. I tell her you know one of my favorite actors Toshiro Mifune is in it, and she was going to guess who he was when he appeared on screen. About 5 minutes in he pops up and she says that's him, obvious because he has such great screen presence, and his character immediately picks his nose and wipes it on his clothes. She's like oh yea your man there is such a charmer. Anyway, he didn't exactly play a character to respect like normal, more the down and out type, but he was great as always. I had a bit of a hard time following this movie so I think a second viewing would benefit me. It was one time where I felt that my lack of knowledge for Japanese culture or history hurt me. It's obviously a strong story but I wasn't a fan of the narration which hasn't been common with the Japanese movies I've seen. Great score and cinematography. Wifey was enjoying it but fell asleep.

For some reason I had in my mind this was Robert Egger's follow up film after The Witch and maybe I heard the comparison somewhere because they are very similar in some ways … it's also very similar to another movie which I wont name but is kind of obvious from the beginning.. I don't think it hides it's influence but there's a few too many going on and whilst not bad, it fails to live up to the hype surrounding it or make anything very original, certainly in storytelling

Thanks to Pirate Bay, I finally got to see Let the Corpses Tan (2018). What I thought was going to be an homage to the poliziotteschi crime genre was more of a love letter to Spaghetti Westerns - though I think it would be fair to say that certain visual elements bled over from one genre to the other. There's definitely more style than substance offered up here - I've heard complaints that the story is borderline incomprehensible if you have no knowledge of the source material, but I found the narrative wasn't that hard to follow. There's definitely some music that some people will recognize: the trailer plays a version of Dies Irae and Sunny Road to Salina is used constantly through the movie. It took a while for me to recognize the female lead in the movie, Elina Löwensohn, whose only work I'm familiar with is Schindler's List (1993) and the gymnast episode of Seinfeld.
Overall, the movie is a delight to look at, but the story takes a back seat to the insane visuals that are stabbing your eyeballs.

I don't know how Straight Time (1978) stayed off my radar for this long, this movie is fantastic. The cast can't be beat: Dustin Hoffman, the gorgeous Theresa Russell, pre-crazy Gary Busey and the first role of Jake Busey, M. Emmet Walsh, Kathy Bates, a younger Sandy Baron (Jack Klompus from Seinfeld), and the amazing Harry Dean Stanton. Though he's not credited, I'm pretty sure I saw Eddie Bunker (Mr. Blue from Reservoir Dogs), who wrote both the screenplay and the source material, in a cameo. The story is simple: Dustin Hoffman is a newly released con that tries to go straight, fails, and returns to a life of crime. What’s great about Straight Time is when/where it is set: grimy 70s Los Angeles; and man it doesn’t waste anytime getting started. I thought I was in store for a 2 hour wishy washy movie about trying to stay straight, but within 30 minutes of the movie Dustin Hoffman says **** the man and unapologetically gets down to crime-town. I don’t know how Criterion hasn’t scooped this film up – a fantastic forgotten gem of the late 70s.

I'm trying to think of something positive to say about Slenderman (2018), but there's nothing there. I'm usual very forgiving of bad horror movies, but Slenderman commits the ultimate sin: it's really ****ing boring. Nothing remotely scary, redeeming, or interesting to see here. This movie needed to go the route of Sinister (2012) and have the main characters looking up creepy ass Slenderman videos to build up tension, but ultimately the narrative falls flat, and within 5 minutes of the movie starting, you'll be wanting to turn on Marble Hornets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_Hornets).

Hereditary
For some reason I had in my mind this was Robert Egger's follow up film after The Witch and maybe I heard the comparison somewhere because they are very similar in some ways … it's also very similar to another movie which I wont name but is kind of obvious from the beginning.. I don't think it hides it's influence but there's a few too many going on and whilst not bad, it fails to live up to the hype surrounding it or make anything very original, certainly in storytelling

I watched this because it's on the top 100 westerns list. It's an early film for both director Raoul Walsh and star John Wayne. I read that at the time it was a huge flop and that it hurt Wayne's stardom for several years. It's corny and dated at times, and it was certainly before prime John Wayne. I really liked the epic adventure aspect of it, and the on location filming was really cool.

I watched Crime and Punishment last night, and I expected to be "wowed" by Peter Lorre's performance in it, but I wasn't. I wanted to understand what he was going through, and "feel" him being tormented by what he had done, and someone else being charged with his crime, but sadly, it just felt like an average crime movie.

I watched this because it's on the Ebert list. I know it's highly regarded but I just sat there stonefaced. I do see how others could find it elegant, charming, and humorous. With the exception of Heaven Can Wait, this has been my normal experience with films from director Ernst Lubitsch. There were no noticeable flaws from my viewpoint, so I guess it just wasn't for me. In that case, I give it my standard gentleman's rating.

All the way throughout this great film, Michael's speech from the movie Anomalisa, was ringing in my head. "What is it to be human? What is it to ache? What is it to be alive?". These questions are what Blade Runner is centred around. There's so much one can get into when discussing this movie, and that's what sci-fi as a genre should always offer, not just relying on a set design.
Side note, am I the only one who's immensely bothered, by Ridley Scott's attitude towards one of the big questions of the movie. He literally goes out of his way in his interviews, to enforce on the audience what his intentions were regarding that aspect, and that pisses me off. Not because I disagree with what he is saying, but because he thinks that by being the director, his word on whatever ambiguity is law, and if you disagree then you're a moron ("You would have to be an idiot not to get that Deckard is a replicant...If you don't get that, you have to be a moron!" his words, not mine). Personally, even if a director confronted me with their true intentions behind whatever they left ambiguous in their film, I still will stick with my own interpretation and believe it's just as right.
Blade Runner 2049 by Denis Villeneuve - 4
https://hd.tudocdn.net/703172?w=660
Surprisingly, I easily favour this sequel to the original. The latter is mostly due to the emotional impact Denis Villeneuve's continuation left on me, and also me preferring 2049's plot. The sequel avoids copying what came before it (which is what most sequels nowadays lazily bank on), and builds on what we've previously seen and experienced, and expands on the thematic aspects of the original. The story concepts this time are far more superior in my eyes, and manage to be even more interesting than what was already immensely interesting in the 1981 feature. For such a "long" film, I genuinely would've been down for at least another hour in this bleak world, which is a feeling I wished to experience after leaving Ridley Scott's version.

I thought this best picture winner was ok but that's about it. It's 3 hours long complete with overture and intermission, and is quite bloated in general. My interest level was decent with it being a biography and William Powell was good in the lead role. I didn't think the character was as wonderful as the film seemed to want the audience to believe. Myrna Loy is in it but doesn't show up until there's about 45 minutes left and doesn't make a big impression. There's other decent characters and performances and I especially got a kick out of seeing Frank Morgan of The Wizard of Oz. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good enough to justify it's award or it's runtime.

I Am Vengeance (Ross Boyask, 2018): Cliched action film starring former WWE superstar Stu Bennett (Wade Barrett) as a mercenary who goes to a small town after learning his best friend has been killed along with friend's parents. He spends the rest of the film searching for answers and exacting revenge. Gary Daniels plays the lead villain of the film. Some nice shootouts and fisticuffs, along with Bennett and Daniels, drives the film with a solid rating of 3 out of 5 stars.

He’s extremely boring by his style and his long shots... it’s not surprising that every movie that he made doesn’t work at the box office... they are not entertaining
What's wrong with long shots? More importantly, I never think of long shots when talking about Villeneuve. I feel like there are countless directors out there who utilise long shots way more than he ever does. The only film of his where I remember a presence of long shots is Polytechnique, everything else not so much.
Obviously I disagree with the "boring" and "not entertaining" parts, but what's to point out here is that his movies do work very well in the box office. Arrival was his most successful film by far, and it earned twice its budget domestically, and four times its budget if we're talking about worldwide gross. Blade Runner 2049 despite flopping in the states, it earned more than its money back in foreign theatres, and this is without even calculating home video earnings (which is another department 2049 was successful in). Sicario was successful, Prisoners was successful, Incendies was successful, his only films that weren't as successful were Enemy (because it's his most experimental and indie), and Polytechnique (because it was the film that seriously launched his career). I'm ignoring the existence of Malestrom, and August 32nd on Earth, because they don't and shouldn't count.
It's fine if you don't like his films, and you're obviously justified in doing so, but I'm just saying, almost all of his films were very successful.

The Priest's Wife - 7/10
There was no reason to dub that awful voice for Marcello Mastroianni's nice voice - especially considering he spoke all the dialogue in English, especially with Sophia Loren's real voice. It would have been funny to leave the rest of the cast with the English person imitating Italian though. A few funny moments, and some decent writing at times.

Air Force One (1997)
I realized I never watched this entirely. It was starting on TV so I took the chance.
It's the typical 90's action movie with the typical clicheed dialogue, but it surprised me how well this is paced. The acting is not nice, not even from Oldamn (not that is horrible but can do much better) and some visual effects look dated.
An entertaining watch nevertheless.

The Red Pill (2016)
The Red Pill is a documentary about anti-feminism and the movement on men's rights.
The premise looks hedious on paper but it's actually not that bad, even if I disagree with 90% of this.
Some of the questions raised are valid, others are simply huge fallacies while others are about mixing causes with consequences. Overall, it's a useful watch to realize how much we still have to evolve, as a society.
As a movie, it drags a little bit because the way questions are handled is not very well managed, and I felt lack of counter arguments.

Breaking the Waves (1996)
I usually don't like Lars von Trier but someone I trust recommended me this so I gave it a go.
I can see many influences from the Dogma 95 movement,at least where it matters, which gives it the advantages of the movement while keeping it easy to watch (which is not very common in pure Dogma films).
The script is amazing and the acting surprisingly good. What almost made me dislike the whole movie was the last 10 seconds with the supernatural elements being thrown when it was clearly not necessary, IMO.
Still, I cleared that scene from my mind and tried to judge the film without it.

Ladybird 2017
(some spoilers)
This film is another one of those highly lauded, critically applauded movies that is interesting enough in parts, but far from the 5 star rating it seems to have garnered from everyone but me. A coming of age film, and supposedly semi autobiographical for the director. A young lady is having a series of mishaps in her love and social life, and is also being quite the difficult adolescent at the time. Her mom, who is as kind as one could be to her patients ( she's a nurse in a psychiatric hospital) and the rest of the family- showers her daughter with almost nothing but exasperation, disappointment, and insults-so cutting, that in the opening scene daughter flings herself out of a moving car to escape her mom's vitriolic tirade and breaks her arm. I don' t know that I could blame the poor girl.
The movie is strung through with witty clever dialog and repartee, and a few poignant moments - eg when the girl forgives her duplicitous boyfriend for hiding the fact he was gay from her, leading her on and breaking her heart. But like her mom, this girl has the capacity to give succor to the wounded.
The problem for me with the film is that beneath the clever repartee, some interesting characters,and some nice scenes of Sacramento; the movie is just too episodic. There's little plot development, no real resolution for the characters or the audience, and we just follow the main character from event to event;
the gay boyfriend, the next boyfriend cool and cruel, to the last impersonal male interest leaving her sick and stranded.
And while the film has a lot of jokes and playful dialog; the end ( to me) was a real downer. Despite being a liar and typical teenage screw up, the protagonist shows her strength, creativity and willpower, throughout tthe movie- to attain a seemingly impossible goal- but in the end she seems like a basket case on the verge of homelessness, adrift in the city she had hoped would energize her; and reaching out to apologize to a mom who is so selfish she wouldn't even say goodbye and wish her daughter well.
In truth, the real life person the protagonist represented became a quite successful movie director - so why end it on so dismal a note.
I don' t know, maybe I' m getting too old for 'coming of age movies' - but this is a movie I could sit through, enjoy parts of it, but wouldn't want to ever see again. And let's face it, isn't every character driven movie a coming of age movie of sorts? I was reminded of this when I spotted the aged but familiar face of Lois Smith, who played Bobby Dupea's eccentric, talented but needy sister in Five Easy Pieces. Here, Lois plays a nun who ungainfully tries to be hip, But in one of the more rewarding episodes, the nun shows she is 'hip' to life's humor and matters of the heart by forgiving the girl for putting ' just married' on her car. "Because it was funny. " An endearing moment, in a movie that seemed to be a mishmash of moments, but revealed no really coherent gravitas.
After seeing Lois; I couldn't help but contrast Five Easy Pieces with this movie, which didn't seem to know if it was a Rosanne episode ( with the mom an alt version of tv's Rosanne instead of sister Jackie-) or a mother daughter version of Whatever happened to Baby Jane.
In Pieces, we also follow a protagonist who is a difficult person, who is lost as to what he wants from life, a liar and user who shows flashes of kindness ( in picking up the stranded hitch hikers) The ending of the movie could be as open ended as the ending of Ladybird, but is essentially a downer - one suspects that Rayette will lead a tough life alone with a child, and Bobby will just forever.....drift.
But Pieces is a riveting, well played, well realized movie that flows like a good work of literature, besides having moments that are as spellbinding as a foggy ferry ride to nowhere, or as hilarious as a chicken salad sandwich. Am I asking too much of a movie like Ladybird to be more than a director's garrulous vision of her difficult mom? Perhaps. But I know I can watch Bobby try and fail to 'come of age' over and over and over again- and never be disappointed.
Two and a half stars out of five for Ladybird.
And while I' m here:
Five stars for Five Easy Pieces.

I watched Trouble in Paradise a few days ago, and I thought it was a charming movie, but there wasn't as much humor in it as I'd expected. But it was definitely better than a 2.5 rating. Probably at least 3.5 for me.

I had read a few recommendations, before I watched it. Unfortunatelly I can't agree with most of them. The movie was quite boring (and there were songs in it:sick:). Cary Grant's skin was so tanned, that I could't barely focuse on the plot;)
It's sad to see An Affair To Remember rated so low. It's one of my favorite movies.

McQueen, Ann Margaret, Edward G. Robinson, Karl Malden, Poker, New Orleans-very cool! It would be difficult not to be a great watch with these qualities, but it fell short of being a great movie. The Hustler of poker it is not. Ann Margaret is wow and she's married to Malden's character lol. The poor guy, I never noticed that disaster of a nose as much as I did when he shared the screen with her. The ending was a surprise. I wonder if John Landis is a fan of this movie? The opening reminded me of The Blues Brothers and then Cab Calloway had a small role.

Lovely cast sort of save it (Matsuyuki Sayuko, Aoi Yu :heart::heart:)
But overrated piece if crap it was. The accolades it got (domestically) more like over gesture because its adapted an inspiring story where bunch of coal miners's daughter success introduced a resort(which projected as subtitute business as mine of their father soon to be closed) become famous by learning hawaiian dance.
Only the execution is kinda crappy and off putting. Ironically to me this made name of Lee Sang-il in his homecountry (which his filmography onward kinda far excel). Comedy and sentimality just isnt his stuff. I can see older like yoji yamada, masayuki suo, or sinobu yaguchi ( this definitely his formula) as better option

Boarding School (Boaz Yakin, 2018): A fresh take on the creepy school genre with a crossdressing 12 year old boy (who does it as a memory to his late grandma) sent to an isolated school with 6 other misfits and a very creepy headmaster who is more sinister than he seems to be. Great performances by the young cast and Will Patton as the headmaster and some very strange twists make this one to check out. 4 out of 5

The Little Stranger is a film that is difficult to genre classify it's quite clearly an adaptation of a novel as you can practically see each chapter break in the film. The basic plot of the story is a doctor (Domnhall Gleeson) is called to a ramshackled estate of the Ayers family. Strange things happen the story progresses and when the film ends you are left with a number of questions. If you enjoyed Jane Eyre, Rebecca, and The Haunting this film is up your alley. If you need things explained to you or you are not willing to accept different interpretations of character and motive this film is going to be a huge problem for you.
My biggest problem was with the casting, Gleeson and Wilson are both very good, however you've got continuity issues with the ages of the characters and the actors. All the characters are really compelling, Gleeson is a very stiff upper lip repressed man in his late thirties/early forties. He's sort of an in-between dealing with commoners who disgust him and the wealthy caste who view him as a tool. Ruth Wilson plays an older unmarried sister, stuck in a sort of spinster role. She's put-upon to take care of the estate and her brother a damaged WWII pilot who thanks to gender roles is "running the house". Both are dealing with the spectre of their eldest sister who passed away before either were born.
The film touches on a number of issues from the economical to the social to the mystical to at it's core the psychological. Faraday(Gleeson) is an extremely compelling character and you reach a point in the film where your perspective shifts. The problem though is that it feels like it's so close to being a classic but it's just missing a few things but I was moved and affected by it, and others will as well.

I watched this for the 30's countdown because it's the first movie on the Cannes' list. As it turned out, it was directed by Cecil B. DeMille which seemed like an odd pairing to me. I believe it wasn't given the award until 2002, for whatever reason. Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea headline a strong cast in this western adventure about those who are trying to extend the railroad west, and those who are trying to stop it. This movie has a lot going for it and it is very entertaining.

U.S. and Russian nuclear explosions have drastically altered the earth's rotation. Fires and earthquakes ravage cities all over the world, and chaos and sickness descend upon the frightened survivors as they try to put the planet back on its axis.
This 1960 Brit sci fi did not have the big bucks of an American production bankrolling it but the producers did a pretty good job all the same. My only compaint is it should have been filmed in color to give it full affect. Australian Leo McKern (of Rumpole of the Bailey fame) steals the show with good support from Edward Judd and the luscious Janet Munro.

Empowered my Nic Roeg fascination I'm glad to say that after reading reviews this languid film satisfied. Dramatic in places but whistful and also thoughtful. The culture clash is wonderfully done and brought into stark resonance with the films ending scene. Think I'll be watching again. Jenny Agutter was absolutely great as the prim but dependable big sis...don't think I've seen her act any better. The music is a bit clunky but suits the film if you get what I mean? 9/10.

Shall We Dance? (1996)
We watched the original Japanese Shall We Dance (1996) last night. What a charming film! It took me awhile to get into the spirit of the Japanese state of mind-- the character traits that they likely admire.
I soon realized that it was part comedy, part drama, with dynamite performances all around, especially from the male lead Koji Yakusho and the pudgy Eriko Watanabe as a brassy but insecure dance instructor. Naoto Tanenaka almost stole the show with a riotous performance of an offbeat office worker who turns into a wild 'n crazy guy on the dance floor. Some of the film was Wes Anderson-esque.
The writer/director Masayuki Suo took his time developing the narrative and plot. The Japanese obviously admire subtlety both as a trait and also in their actors. Yakasho in particular could have done well in silent films, with his ability to express thought in facial expressions.
This was not really a dance film, but much of it does take place in a Tokyo dance studio. The dancing that was featured was interesting and believable. I haven't seen the American version made in 2004, but it's hard to imagine that it could be as absorbing and as satisfying as the Japanese original.

Very mild and predictable type of Shark horror with questionable Shark physics and CGI. It’s a time passer with forgettable yet not obnoxious characters. Slightly more serious than the most recent The Shallows but with less personality.

A war hero's heroism is credited to someone who didn't deserve it, while the hero comes home with issues. It's a trend that will never end for the guy. Good film, about the "Troubles". Never easy to portray but Jack O'Connell makes a good fist of being a squaddie lost in Belfast. I believe this was based on a true story. Rough around the edges and the acting drops off (especially when its face off type scenes) but altogether a good story well told 6/10

May of 1940 witnessed one of the most amazing feats of WW2.. the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of allied troops from the French seaside town of Dunkerque (Dunkirk). Some were by the British navy but the majority of the avacuators were the owners of small civilian craft which had been mobilsed by a desperate British government. As a result of this immensely brave effort by everyday Englishmen some 330,000 British, French, Belgian and Dutch soldiers made their way back across the English Channel to fight another day.
Unlike previous cinematic versions of the momentous event, this modern version lacked the human touch. I found myself becoming frustrated with the story and wanting it to end well before it did.

A solid crime film from beginning to end. Although, the last half hour or so is what bumped it up from just being solid, to having glimpses of greatness. I surely didn’t expect to be as effected as I was by the conclusion of this true story. It is understandable though, once one knows where the film is slowly but surely heading. Oof, so upsetting too!
Nocturnal Animals by Tom Ford - 4.5

“When you love someone, you work it out, you don’t just throw it away, and you have to be careful with it, because you might never get it again”
Just when I started to feel dispirited about the lack of new favourite films in my pocket, this comes along and blows me away. I didn't think I could relate so much to a movie made by a fashion designer, but here I am, totally invested in the happenings, and fulfilled by the emotional package they brought. The grade A cast undoubtedly amplified the overall quality, especially Amy Adams with her subtle and reserved showing, and Jake Gyllenhaal with his emotionally devastating performance. The latter was already among the top of my preferred actors, but now it’s getting to the point where every film he stars in becomes an instant favorite of mine (Enemy, Nightcrawler, Donnie Darko, and now Nocturnal Animals, would all have a place in a "100 films" list if I ever made one, and Gyllenhaal is a big reason for their inclusion), so he might actually statistically be my favorite actor, and it totally feels like it too.
Personally, I don’t perceive the film to be as much about revenge, as it is about closure. I feel like the intentions of Gyllenhaal's character, are to seek closure after all the hurt he's been through. Him dedicating his book to his ex-wife is a way to express his feelings to her and what he went through after that certain situation, it's a way to express his point of view of their relationship, it's a way for him to express all of what he has previously reserved and held back, it's a way to prove her wrong, and more importantly, it's a way for him to finally have closure, and I feel like the ending backs that up perfectly. Meanwhile, it's Amy Adams' character who actually perceives his book as revenge against her.
I badly want to give Nocturnal Animals a 10/10, but I'll leave that decision to be made after my second watch, which will probably happen tonight. Maybe I'll even write my thoughts extensively too.

Not much to say here, other than I thought it was alright overall, with a few great moments here and there. The first half was kinda annoying, especially with that club scene and all of the yelling, but things got better as the movie went along, but not enough so to particularly impress me. There was also some hilariously bad scenes and moments, that increased the level of my entertainment. Oh and the editing worked well too.

I haven't seen it but I can imagine. They recently made another adaptation with Tim Roth, which amused me because of the couple of times he worked with John Hurt.

It's reasurring to see that there's at least one designer out there who knows the difference between an apostrophe and a single opening quotation mark. Pet hate of mine :D;).

Multiple times I have seen this fine film about the life and times of serial killer John Christie brilliantly portrayed by Richard Attenborough. The late John Hurt also puts in a solid performance. I also give it ★★★★

Like Casey Affleck but found this whole film quite flat from a Jim Thompson novel. Didn't really get the outrage a the violence against females. Main protagonist is a psychopath! The story itself was fine I just feel that Winterbottom (who I can like and dislike) didn't take much risks for him and overall the end product is a bit bland or at least, not as good as it could have been. 5/10

The Red Pill - rating_5
Made by a self-described Feminist, I wasn't sure if it would be worth watching it coming from a defined perspective, but it was very good. She was sincere, and seemed genuine about finding things out, even though she'd get knee-jerk reactions, but I guess I did when it was my side; which I think is the problem, hence, the reason for an opposition group, which is too bad - we should be fighting side by side, fixing the biggest problems.

"we should be fighting side by side, fixing the biggest problems." That's how I feel about everything. You know it's like the Pink Floyd song, 'Together we stand, divided we fall....'

That's the tragedy of the damn thing - legitimate concerns being compromised because the movement got co-opted by regressive anti-feminist types (some of whom are uncritically featured in the film), which is why it sucks that the director just goes "welp guess I'm not a feminist anymore" at the end.

Absurdly over-hyped, but quite good. Same storyline as the documentary Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County [Florida], but fictionalized. Precocious little girl stars & Willem Dafoe very good.

Storyline a little confusing & hard to follow, at least for me, but a solid movie. Enjoyed it.

Same.. Pink Floyd is also my favorite band!
I saw a silly review of someone saying "Not many great visuals" - I think it bothered both sides who profit from the chaos, hence the low score. After you see it, check out a talk she did afterwards.

The first image is the original, which uses an apostrophe to abbreviate 1971. In the second image I've changed it to a single opening quotation mark, which is used in error on a lot on film posters.
On a Mac you type an apostrophe with a key command rather than an individual key, so I'm sure a lot of people just use the quotation mark key for convenience – that's how I think this error has come to be so frequent. The problem is that you'd get the single opening quotation mark first, whereas for the purpose above you'd need the closing as it's identical to an apostrophe.
I thought computer keyboards were the source of this but strangely I've seen some quite old graphic work making the same mistakes.

I take your point - it should be an apostrophe of course - but now I’m confused looking at my iPad keyboard. Which is the apostrophe key & do I have a single quotation mark (rather than a double quotation mark)?

Oh yes, they've separated the single and double quotation mark keys on that layout.
It's okay for normal typing – I use the single quotation mark key to type 'apostrophes' because I know they'll come out the right way round:
’
It's when you want to abbreviate a word that you have a problem, as it will default to a single opening quotation mark.

This was directed by James Whale, who has a pretty good resume, and it stars Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, and even the woman who would go on to play the old fossil in Titanic. It's a horror with awesome atmosphere and a comedic side. It's an entertaining movie that I probably would have loved if I had seen it when I were younger.
