Bicycle Thieves (1948)

Wow, just wow. How I am managing to describe my experience is utterly beyond me. Everything with this film was perfect for me. Every shot, every frame in threaded with so much emotion and beautiful realism. The music was brilliant and never failed to capture the mood every single time. In a short 90 minutes I felt so much, for a simple and warm film about a father and son trying to find a bicycle.

I think I'm already becoming a fan of director De Sica. I'm going to check out Umberto D sometime next week.

I regret seeing it now. I have no idea why I skipped Bicycle Thieves. Everyone who hasn't seen this yet check it out.

Bicycle Thieves is a great film. Check out "Two Women" - it might be De Sica's best (with Sophia Loren)... Umberto D is also really good.

What's Up, Doc? - 2/10 - This film doesn't even deserve a poster, just didn't want anyone confusing it with the cartoon. It's not funny, it's so silly. It's considered a "screwball comedy" but so is "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town" - this reminds more of the first 10 minutes of "Bringing Up Baby" - and I turned it off. I wish I wouldn't have finished this film.

Barbara Streisand is very pretty in the film, but annoying.

Second time viewing this.. And both times I started watching it between 6-7am, and both times I fell asleep due to fatigue and my pain medication, but... the minute I woke up, I rewound and watched.

Set in WWII, Peck sees an inefficient group of guys, feels that his friend (the commander) is too personal with his guys. Peck starts out cold, but then others realize he is becoming close. Good film.

Shaolin Temple (1976)

During my teen years, I thought I'd seen most Kung-Fu films while watching the syndicated show Black Belt Theater, but this one slipped by me. I love a lot of them, and some of them are too campy. Plus, I can't remember the names of most of the Kung-Fu films, but I'll remember this one. Good acting, nice set-up, comic relief (with one guy who seems to be a precursor to Jackie Chan), and a action-packed, violent last third. I'll probably end up buying this one.

The Eel - 3_5+

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b2/The_Eel_1997.jpg/220px-The_Eel_1997.jpg

Hum, it's been some time since I watched an "art house" live action Japanese film. I liked the overall atmosphere of the film and the visual diversity attained by the director was very pleasing. Interestingly it shared the Palme D Or with a movie of my least liked director of the genre, Kiarostami.

Miyazaki said that live action Japanese stuff made after 1970 is garbage mainly because they fail in being visually interesting. He is certainly wrong if you take it literally, though it's true that most Japanese color live action films are really poorly made (I watched several dozen manga live action adaptations directed by "not so famous" names and they were really poorly directed).

Finally, Keiko's voice appears to be as high pitched as the average female seiyuu acting. I don't understand how someone who watches Japanese live action films regularly can complain of the high pitched voice acting in animation. It's true that some are extremely high pitched (in the moe titles they try to sound the cutest as possible) but most female voice acting reflects the typical voices expected from females in Japanese society (which is indeed more high pitched than western on average).

Some said that Japanese films explain less to the viewer than American films do, that's true in general but that's not because of differences in culture however, but because of the different role films play in US culture relative to Japanese culture. In Japan, the mainstream culture is driven by manga and TV, as a result films became partly an art house niche. while in the US mainstream culture is still heavily influenced by film, which means artsy titles get diluted among the mainstream offers. There are Japanese films that are as entertaining and easy to watch as an American action film, too bad fans of "foreign movies" in the west only watch the relatively unconventional "foreign language" films, that's perhaps because fans of non-US movies are attracted to specific types of movies which are underrepresented in US film industry, such as these art house movies.

Sucker Punch EC (USA/CDN, 2011, Zack Snyder) - rating_1_5

The film has a interesting story concept and great first five minutes but the rest is pretty much flawed. The scenes at the brothel are boring, badly acted and full of bad dialogue. The action setpieces could have been great but they are boring as well because the girls are never really in danger and you don't root for them in the first place. So you're merely left with amazing visuals.

Oh no, this is much more f*cked. :)

I enjoyed it, but they are all officially superheroes now, and the action is officially so unbelievable and relying so much on coincidence that you simply don't care anymore. Anyways, the first half was the best, the second half was your typical action cgi-eksplosion fest, mainly the climax.

Anyways, I will do a proper review in my diary thread soon...

Hunger (2008, Steve McQueen)

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/92/65/7b/92657b37138cc914e79a2234c007726b.jpg

McQueen's 2008 prison drama has to be one of the most accomplished and complete directorial debuts in all of cinema. It's a work of someone with a perceptive, observant yet penetrative vision. A work of art that almost transcends the politics of its story and touches upon something much more pensive and philosophical. If you were to read the general premise of Hunger off a piece of paper, you could easily mistake it for a conventional, relatively straightforward and elementary film. However, from a storytelling and technical standpoint, it's anything but. McQueen takes a highly unorthodox and unique approach to the historical drama genre and gives us something truly haunting, perturbing and discomfiting, yet also strikingly beautiful, human and poignant.

His vivid and precise attention to detail clearly stems from his work as an artist. As somebody who is obsessed with small, exact and meticulous details signifying larger, more abstract conceptions. The film's depiction of the hunger and no-wash strike nucleates around this very notion, and it captures the brutality and turmoil of the strike more disconcertingly than any other 'conventional' approach would. But McQueen understands a film can not be this inaccessible and abstruse without giving some type of explanation eventually. And he does. The compelling exchange between Bobby and the Priest (mostly achieved all in one long, impressive take) provides this. It gives the film context, heart, and a sense of direction. It never leaves behind the demands of telling a story.

The last twenty minutes are among some of the most technically dextrous and profoundly meditative in all of my movie-watching experiences. It actually engendered the same type of emotional reaction that the final sequences of 2001: A Space Odyssey induced. In fact, they're rather similar when you think about it. It's about confronting and facing death. Facing morality. The inevitability of demise. The shots of Bobby lying on his death bed, accompanied by the diegetic sounds of slow, steady breathing, seeing his younger self, with his body in a state of decline felt reminiscent of an ageing Dave Bowman when he went 'beyond the infinite'. Okay, maybe that is a bit of an ill-founded and implausible comparison, but that's the power of filmmaking. Hunger is the only other work that made me feel this and I don't know why exactly.

As much as I am crediting McQueen's adept direction and remarkably perceptive sensibilities here, this is simply no overlooking the amazingly physical performance of Michael Fassbender. Yes, the body transformation is one thing, but the pain, the degradation and the human suffering he exhibits is another. This is truly a fantastic piece of filmmaking. I'll conclude by saying that there is this saying in movies and it goes something like this - 'there are three type of films: those that are written, those that are shot, and those that are edited'. I think Steve McQueen's Hunger is a combination of these three things, and maybe, just maybe, something a little bit more. It's a powerful and forceful work.

Disgusting, brutal, absolutely terrifying in what it's trying to achieve as a film- but brilliant! Sort of the same reason why Natural Born Killers is one of my favorite films. The awesome characters and the fast pacing are developed with violence and mess- something hard to achieve, but this film pulls it off. I don't consider The Devil's Rejects just a horror film- I consider it to be a great exploitation and very, very dark satire.

Interstellar 4+

An astonishingly beautiful and ambitious, yet heavily convoluted mess. There are some glorious moments of breathtaking beauty, yet there are also cringeworthy moments of heavy Nolan exposition and contrivances as well. What really drives the film is its' emotional core and the performance of Matthew McConaughey. This is miles and miles ahead of every Nolan film as this is finally a film that has a firm understanding of human emotions, whereas other Nolan films have a sort of sterile and clinical feel. I'd say all of his films with the exception of his first two are barely above average. I'd call this one his best, although it is still deeply flawed.

The addition of a new cinematographer was a great idea, as he is able to lend the film a gorgeous visual palette. In my eyes Pfister wasn't all that good. His cinematography was sort of flat and workmanlike at best. This isn't a masterpiece. It isn't a piece of art like 2001, and in honesty I can't believe that people seriously compare the two. However, this is one of the most thoughtful and ambitious films ever made and a showcase that a blockbuster doesn't have to be idiotic, mindless drivel.

It's been a while since I've rated any movie. Been watching tons but I was honestly lazy to start rating them, as I tend to like pretty much everything. But I felt like I should show off my face again so, I'll rate the 2-3 last ones I seen.

Big Hero 6 (2014)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4b/Big_Hero_6_%28film%29_poster.jpg

Was one of the latest I saw. I'll start off by saying that I was in tears almost the full movie. I just got so much into the story, I have a big brother whom I can't even imagine losing. I love everything of the movie, the big fluffy-fat robot was adorable, the little main char boy is likeable for almost everyone. The rest of the team is also awesome and the final is beautifully made. It's a yes/yes for me and I'd re-watch it any day.

It's a movie full with emotions, and how even in the worst situations you can grow as a person.

Piranha 3DD (2012)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/27/Piranha-3dd-poster-2.jpg

This.. this I have no words about. After watching a bit I realized it wasn't a serious movie, so unrealistic and idiotic unless you realize you should NOT take it seriously. Then you start having fun watching it. Also I have to say I love the camera work on this one, it doesn't go so far in rating but it encouraged me to look for more movies that have camera job so well done like this movie.

If taken seriously you will HATE this movie (And definitely will hate the 20 last minutes unless you watch it as idiotic entretaiment)

3 for being fun to watch.

Also re-watched

The Beauty and the Beast

Such an amazing movie, I forgot everything about it, loved it again just as much. Happiness is only real when shared, the beast could tell how true this is I bet.

I've seen much more but I won't spam it right away, as I'd need to re-watch some to rate them properly.

Hearts of the West (1975)

A fun, easy-going movie set in 1930's Hollywood, particularly on the sets of B-Westerns. Jeff Bridges is a dime-store Western novelist who is chased by two bad guys from Nevada to California, where Bridges stumbles onto a movie set and is soon employed as an extra. Lots of familiar faces in this one: Andy Griffith, Blythe Danner, Alan Arkin, Alex Rocco, Donald Pleasence, and character actors galore who, when you see their faces, even if you don't recognize their name, you'll go, "Oh, that guy!" These include Matt Clark, Richard B. Shull, Anthony James, Herb Edelman, Burton Gilliam. and Candice Azzara. Anyway, Jeff has the bad guys on his trail, he tries his hand at playing movie cowboy while getting advice from veteran cowboy Griffith, writes a big novel, falls in love, etc. All good fun that passes by quickly and leaves you feeling good. Check it out if you get a chance.

Leaving Las Vegas

Aching sorrow, isolation, loneliness, loss of hope, etc. Very few films in my eyes truly do justice to themes such as these and Leaving Las Vegas is one of those rare films. Nick Cage has nor will he ever do anything better than this role, as he plays a self-destructive alcoholic who plans to drink himself to death. This film has a very tangible mood and builds an incredible atmosphere; it never feels sentimental or heavy-handed. The performances are incredible. Loved the soundtrack(Lots of Sting).

This was the first time i've seen this movie. I had some pretty high expactations because of all the praise this movie got and still gets. It couldn't fully live up to my expactations but i really enjoyed it, nonetheless. I'm pretty confident the movie will grow on me with every rewatch, just like 12 Angry Men did.

The story of John Reginald Christie and Timothy Evans that eventually lead to the abolishment of the death penalty in Britain.

When it comes to style and aesthetic, it's a product of its time.

But holy cow it's a good watch. Attenborough is fantastically against type and the whole thing is highly underplayed. Pretty drab and dreary but you simply can't take your eyes off it, it's shot so simply it borders beautiful.
Based on a true story though which makes the whole thing more potent and real.

Attenborough's bald-cap is a bit dodgy at times though :D

Black Swan (2010)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/68/Black_Swan_poster.jpg

With: Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis

I did definitely not expect this. It was beautiful, very well acted, at some points I wondered if she's just going to wake up and it's all going to be a dream, or that she made up in her mind some of the characters. I was terribly confused, and scared at some point. I was so into the movie I was shocked when it ended, I wanted to see more, to feel more, to make it last longer. It's a piece of art.

It's wonderful, now that I think about it, it kind of reminds me of Perfect Blue.

I also watched the trailer after I saw the movie ( I tend to do that to see what people thought about the movie and to see if the trailer gave away things, which it did, so I'm glad I haven't seen it before) and I realized that the director is the same person who directed Requiem for a dream, which is one of my all time favorites. So thumbs up for that haha!

After Hours - 5/10 - I liked Paul's performance. There were some funny parts, but any film that will throw extreme loops, problems, etc., will keep people engaged... It reminded me of a dream, how everything comes together, and how you can never "get home" -- The film also reminded me very much of "The Trial" (Orson Welles adaptation of Kafka) in many ways.

woah man. Mann once again redefines his modernist digital aesthetic into a film that breathes new life into the gangster genre. Gunfights pack a lethal punch, and sound design has seldom been better in any film. The film makes you feel part of the action, as though you were actually there with John Dillinger back in the 1930's. The film also has a hint of nihilistic existentialism, as a palpable sense of dread is able to seap into each frame presenting the lives of men who at any second could die.

Depp brings a subtle charm to Dillinger, so it's great to see him in a performance where he isn't "phoning it in". The rest of the supporting cast-members do a very solid job as well. This is definitely a film that deserves reevaluation in the film community, like the majority of Mann's later films. Seeing this makes me even more excited to check Blackhat out once it comes out.

I actually liked it.... I guess the reason I enjoyed it, is because I study Egyptian Mythology and believe me, if I went snooping into Osiris' tomb, I would expect no less from his son, Anubis.. The Imitation Game (2014)

Benedict Cumberbatch is actually very good as a math prodigy and an extremely odd and troubled character who helps the British government against the Nazis during World War II by building a code deciphering machine at the disapproval and ridicule of his colleagues and superiors.

I Married a Communist (1953)

http://i.imgur.com/QZU5p0t.jpg

The film has a few golden moments (it has one of the funniest movie phone call) but overall the action and drama is weak, mainly because 72 minutes can't support much of a rich story, and lousy direction.

Pickpocket - 8/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7d/Pickpocketposter.jpg

Wonderful... The main character isn't as interested in the money or watches he pickpockets, but rather than getting away with it. It's a test against himself. He lives in a tiny room, doesn't do anything with the money but hide it from the authorities who suspect him, and is playing a game of cat and mouse. And he's interested in playing, even showing him a book about a famous thief. His friend tries to help him out, his mother is dying, and his mother's neighbor comes into the mix.

The protagonist thinks the system is upside down, and feels pickpocketing might be good for the country, as it takes someone smart, brilliant, or even a genius (as he tells an officer). Instead of his skills being used for something useful, he is busy resisting his only friend, and making a few pickpocket friends who conspire to keep doing this aimlessly. His mother dies, he leaves, but comes back to Paris penniless. The story of his life...

It's a very short movie, but it's a thriller. I didn't want it to end so soon.

The Seventh Seal - 10/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/69/Seventhsealposter.jpg

I don't think there's any theme this film doesn't talk about. It's during the Black Plague, and how the people deal with it. Because they know death is near, each has their own way of coping. The film deals with a lot of doubt - in religion (especially by the Crusaders), the afterlife - which comes to them as being nothing. Antonius feels life is empty knowing there is nothing after death, but it's only because Death has been at his side for some time. He tries to delay his fate by playing a game of Chess, trying to find more answers, but sees more deception.

Revenge of the Nerds 3 (First time) - It was a lot better than I was expecting it to be and surprise to me, it was my wife's choice!!!

Last Weekend 1 - Patricia Clarkson stars in this boring film about a mother who wants to have one final weekend at a lake house with her family, like they did when they were kids, before she sells it. It's interesting to see that this film HAD potential, but squanders it on irritating characters, flat direction, pointless characters and cliched dramedy bits. The family just HAS to be dysfunctional because no family film is interesting if they are not dysfunctional. I'm starting to get irritated by this one. The film introduces subplots, abandons them, ties loose threads up in rushed dialogue literally just before the film finishes. This is on netflix, if you see it...pass.

Trance (2013) 2

I've always liked Rosario Dawson, but I gained oh so much more respect for her after seeing this. She's hanging out with James McAvoy, when she excuses herself to the bathroom. All of a sudden, you hear the electric shaver going, then she comes out. Hello! No shower curtain in the way, no shadows or bad lighting, just Rosario in all her glory, with a cleaned up undercarriage plus the big rack and everything. I'm not going to lie, my wife wasn't home. I put the movie on pause and gave her a standing ovation. It took me like 20 minutes but I finally figured out how to use the zoom function. As far as the rest of the movie goes, I couldn't tell you anything. Who cares really, just fast forward to the good stuff.

DAS BOOT (1981)

There may be those who won't be fully engaged by Das Boot. Some call it boring, and those who agree with that sentiment may gloss over writings and thoughts on the film. So, what are the criticisms?
'It's long.' 'It's slow.' 'There's not enough action.' 'They're bloody-murderous-Nazis!' And here we are.
Well, that's not how i see the film. Wolfgang Petersen and his cast and crew set out to craft a tactful story set in this time period and give you the viewer the experience of what it's like to be on a submarine in hostile waters during wartime. Had he cut out the 'draggy' parts, he'd be depriving the viewer of the real experience of being on a submarine. After all, you're enclosed in a hunk of titanium in the middle of a vast f*ing ocean. Enough setting up, there's a U-boat film to talk about

Open torpedo hatches
Autumn 1941. The German U-Boat fleet is out to blockade and starve out Britain, though the Kriegsmarine Oberkommando der Marine German Navy is suffering its first major setbacks due to British freighters sailing the Atlantic with upgraded Destroyer class escort ships. An example of a scene that captures why i love this film: Our U-boat floats along the water against a vast sunset sky, quite the artistic canvas → directly followed by a close-up shot of a German sailor picking a booger and flicking it on his shipmate. Right there. That's the set-up of the film, majestic visuals, illusions of glorious victories in battle on the high seas, contrasted with sweaty socks and grease

http://oi59.tinypic.com/nyfbxc.jpg

You're a young and enthusiastic crewman on a U-boat out to sink enemy convoy ships and bring glory to the Deutschland. When the Captain of your ship (Jürgen Prochnow) is good enough to sink those Brit bastards with destroyer escorts hanging around, now you've made some angry Brits. Out to wreck your world with sonar tracking depth charges and heavy fire blazing.

I read that Leonardo Da Vinci drafted the first designs for subs in the 1400's. His critics and the more practical men of his day likely thought him a kook and a loon artsy man, making up ships. 500 years later submarines sail the waters
Happy hunting, you old sea dogs!

All i want for Christmas is a Class 7 German U-boat

I actually liked it.... I guess the reason I enjoyed it, is because I study Egyptian Mythology and believe me, if I went snooping into Osiris' tomb, I would expect no less from his son, Anubis.. Someone asked me what was the scariest film for 2014 and this is actually the movie I stated.. but I did explain the same thing... the Gods of Egypt are not ones to be f*cked with.

The reason I rated it THAT badly is because I rated it based on how much it scared me. It's considered a horror movie film, and it really didn't do the scary part for me.

But I love Egyptian Mythology myself, maybe if I didn't focus on it not being scary I would have enjoyed it more.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Have thought about seeing this for years but finally got the chance last night. Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell play two showbiz singers who travel by ship to Paris, with Marilyn flirting with a rich old man (played by the great Charles Coburn). A thin story line concerning a mistaken theft and Marilyn's love of jewelry is just silly backing to the songs and romance. The musical highlight is Marilyn's famous "Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friends." Young George Winslow almost steals the movie as a little kid (although a complete gentleman :)) with a raspy voice who helps Marilyn a few times aboard the ship. Not quite a classic musical but lots of fun.

La Strada - 10/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/03/La_Strada_Poster.jpg

"If there is anyone here who has a faint of heart, please turn away"

And that's a message to the viewers - it's a very emotional and sad film, but with a ton of humor, which I can't say for 99% of the films I've seen, even the ones I love.

Another key is one's purpose in life. I guess Gelsomina's purpose was to be taken advantage of, to suck up all the anger and hurt from everyone she comes in contact with. It's sad because 60 years later, with all the "Women's Movements" and such, it seems that the great women keep finding these abusive men, sticking around out of fear, low-esteem, or a number of many other reasons.

L'Avventura - 3/10 - Brought to you by the director who crapped out "Blow-Up" - blew it right out of his a$$. This film was absurd. 2 and a half hours of nothing. I believe silence can tell a lot, and though there's plenty of talking, nothing is being said. Most of the Italian films I've seen are very great, but this was horrible.

Afterwards, I listened to the first few minutes of the commentary, and at the first viewing, I guess everyone booed it. Antonioni could then say, "Oh, nothing like this has been done before" as a defense, or throw the overused word "art" to give an explanation of something that isn't good.

And to an earlier discussion, for 1960, this shows a lot of leg. Even though I love long hair on women, the short-haired girls are very, very beautiful. A few times you see the beautiful women nude, but not showing anything. Lots of ridiculous kissing, maybe this was made for hip 11-year olds, I don't know..

The movie starts out really good, but the last half wasn't as good. It's a movie about a suspected witch and possible inheritors.

I couldn't imagine this movie being in color, takes away the scary depth.

El Topo (1970) - Alejandro Jodorowsky (Mexican Western)
I'm not great with surreal movies. I usually need to find some meaning in a film (whether it's what the director intended or not) and with films like this I often struggle. The issue seems to be with religious imagery is I have little understanding of its inspiration. To me the bible was about some bearded guy making stuff for 6 days, then he had a break, then it rained a lot and then everyone ate Easter eggs. That's my ignorance - not the movies fault.

Having said that I still found myself fascinated by the images and I also found myself really thinking about how Jodorowsky makes movies and his use of people of all different shapes and sizes. I was wondering if he is really exploiting people ... and then I thought maybe that's what he wants me to think and that's me creating those issues in my head.

So, I ended up really enjoying this even though I had little idea of what Jodowsky was getting at. The key to whether I like a movie or not is whether it makes me think and feel - this definitely made me think,

The Naked Island (1960)

http://i.imgur.com/lHwaQIh.jpg

I watched for the 60s list. Having no dialogue was really effective in the film because the atmosphere created, especially revolving around the island can sink in perfectly. The story is simple, straightforward but loses itself a bit trying to be both minimalist and a Kurosawa-like drama. Overall, it has a few flaws but great film methinks.

Victory At Sea - The Feature Film

http://www.horror.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=253&pictureid=2188

This was called the Victory At Sea Feature Film.

It condensed 13 hours of World War Two footage into 90 minutes.

It was a great recap of the original series.

The films were great, it was logically organized.

It had the great scores from the Broadway composer Richard Rodgers.

It also had Alexander Scourby an actor from theatre and films as the narrator. With his acting background, his narration was excellent.

For making an excellent recap of the great series Victory At Sea, as well as great music and narration, I would give this one a 10!

Very enjoyable !

Dwayne Johnson and Sean William Scott punch and kick their way out of the Amazon jungle. There are very few words in that sentence that made me think this would be anything but a crapfest ... but it was surprisingly entertaining. Ridiculous but entertaining. I'm a fan of Berg due to Friday Night Lights (the TV show - not so much the movie) but I've been a little disappointed with his films - this however is worth wasting 100 minutes on.

Beginning in Yojimbo, Sanjuro staunchly positioned himself as one of cinema’s most enigmatic, adrenaline-charged characters. Sanjuro is brilliantly paced and rife with thrilling action. This film has one of the most chilling, gory deaths of its decade and preceding decades I have ever seen. Kurosawa, as expected, exemplifies a command of action and a knack for propelling the story through emotional scenes of dialogue and elevated performances.

My first comment :DD. Yesterday i saw Not Cool that movie from the youtuber Shane Dawson. Actually it was better than i thought especially because of the little many for the production of it. I don't know if I kind of like it because it was pretty "accurate" (i would said is the word) about 20years-old-people who finished highed school a few years ago and know some of them enjoys this new phase and others want to go back to school.

I am not demanding but just for being orginal and funny doesn't make it perfect. 7/10 i would say, it 's hard for me to rate i have never done that before ;(.

One that I missed in the theater last year. Isaac is doing his best to channel his inner Corleone, specifically Michael. He does a pretty good job of it but unfortunately he is the only compelling character in the film. He and the cinematography made me enjoy it, but definitely didn't elevate it.

I saw Ip man (2008) a couple of days ago.

This is a quite known film so you might already know but the story follows the martial arts master Ip man as he surprises the people with his own style of fighting. Later on in the film we are shown how the Japanese attack the Chinese which eventually makes the Chinese people very poor, including Ip man and his family. This film is inspired by the real life of the martial arts master Ip man who also had many known students such as Bruce Lee.

I really enjoyed this film. There were a couple of fighting scenes that overdid it a little bit but there were not too many of them and these are to be expected from a film of this genre.

I do not really know how you guys put up those popcorn ratings but I would give this film a 4/5. There is a second one as well which I thought was pretty good too but I did enjoy the first one more.

Transformers: Age of Extinction - 2

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/94/Transformers_Age_of_Extinction_Poster.jpeg/220px-Transformers_Age_of_Extinction_Poster.jpeg

After Bay said he was done with the series he went on to direct Pain & Gain. That film didn't do so well so in order to stay on top again he dives back into the series that will make a ton of money, no matter how bad the films are. I don't understand...I simply DO NOT UNDERSTAND how people are still paying to see this film. After what is not only the worst in the series, one of the worst films of that year and possibly one of the worst films of the 21st Century, people still continue to flock like sheep to the colourful images, bright lights, fast cars and CGI non-sense.

I still have nightmares about The Revenge of the Fallen. The first film, at 144 minutes is the shortest. THE SHORTEST!!!! I literally started watching a youtube compilation of "fail videos" during the absurd climax of this film. Once the dinobots came in, which was extremely poorly done, I was checked out. I know what your saying..."but Matt, how the hell were you still checked in until the end of the film?" You know what Mofo members? I don't know. I was hanging on - BARELY - for dear life to what was suppose to be a film on my television screen.

But is it my fault? More or less. What should I have expected? The other films are obnoxiously loud, mind-numbingly long, a story that is a slave to the special effects and inane product placement. I guess I thought that maybe with a new cast (Marky Mark), the exclusion of Shia and the Dinobots would make the film somewhat interesting, but it doesn't and this film is NOT in the slightest. The one time where I thought the film did something different was when they -
Kill off the comedic relief sidekick in the first half
- I was kinda shocked they did that - but of course our heroes move on like nothing is wrong two seconds later and we are given more characters who sort of fit the bill.

The story....man, does it suck. It shows that they had literally nowhere to go. The first 3 films wrapped things up, now this, which doesn't make a lick of sense, leaves open the possibility for more films and just stretches the thinnest plot lines out to an insane running time. Please Mr. Bay....go back to a film like The Rock which is universally hailed as your best work. Go back to an enclosed space for your characters. Characters that we like, acted by accomplished thespians...oh what the hell am I doing...forget it.

This film is not THE worst in the series. I honestly doubt anything will scrape the bottom of that barrel.

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane - 1.5

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/19/Boys_love_lane.jpg/215px-Boys_love_lane.jpg

A bunch of rich kids invited Mandy Lane, an outsider, who got "hot" over the summer, to their farm in order to rape her. Okay, maybe the rape bits sounds a bit too far, but their intentions are indeed to get with her. Lines like - "when we get there, make sure I get the first shot at her" makes the film sound incredibly ominous about what is about to happen.

Completed in 2006 - the film sat on the shelves due to the company who acquired it going bankrupt. The Weinstein Company finally got the rights to release it in 2013. The build up in the horror community was not THAT big, but it was big enough for me to be intrigued by the concept. The film does not deliver in any way.

You can see the inspiration of Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre - but that is not enough to save this film. The finale reveal, not that shocking, is the only thing that makes the film suspenseful or the the least bit interesting. This film came and went without a peep. If I were not such a horror nut - I doubt I would even know what it was.

Uninteresting kills, lame characters you want to die, the film has it in spades. So do yourself a favour and skip this film. Cause this boy right here...does NOT love Mandy Lane. See what I did there? Was it lame? Good, then it matches this film perfectly.

Night at the Museum 3: Secret of the Tomb (2014) 3 - This movie was surprisingly great, wasn't really expecting much going in. The Second was alright, but this one was so good and such a great end to the story, for some stupid reason after watching the first 2 I've gotten attached to these characters and the ending almost had me in tears actually, which I wasn't expecting. Loved the tribute to Robin Williams at the end. It may have been just a little one but it was still nice of them to do it and just like Fast & Furious 7 they didn't try to capitalize on their stars' death (Robin Williams) which I thought was very noble of them.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2015) 3.5 - Don't judge, I have a weak spot for dirty comedies, plus I loved the first one so I had to see this one too. The movie was funny as hell and made me laughed throughout(That's what it's suppose to do) and I really wasn't expecting it to be that funny but it sure as hell was, but the absence of John Cusack was felt Even though he does have a cameo at the end in the Unrated Version And I rated it off of the basis of if I laughed through it and I sure did. Was the story good? Not really but does any good comedy really have a Oscar worthy story to tell (Seldom do)? And i loved the Jennifer Lawrence joke in this movie, if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about. And it was much better and more enjoyable than Horrible Bosses 2 so there's that.

Lady in the Water (2006) - M Night Shyamalan (American Fantasy)
This falls a long way short of Shyamalan's best but it is also a lot better than his worst - which really sums up his problems as a director. He's terribly inconsistent and i think it is because he has become really lazy. His films are filled with bad scenes and whilst this didn't have as many as The Happening, which was 95% bad scenes, it still has too many and they ruin what could have been a good film.

I'm disappointed with this movie. I like the trailer a lot, i like Mads Mikkelsen and the setting. But the synopsis sounds way more exciting than the movie actually is. Especially the second half drags on forever. You'll probably like this movie if you like Valhalla Rising. I'd say these movies are very similar in terms of style and pacing.

Le Trou (The Hole) - 8/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/06/Le_trou_becker_poster3.jpg

A great film. I actually picked this out with my eyes closed in the French section at the library. I actually thought it was by Robert Bresson as I watched it. It's about guys who are in a cell trying to escape. A lot of camaraderie, sacrifice, and a feeling of not knowing exactly what each guy is thinking, or what's going to happen. Great movie!

Did anyone get tricked? In the beginning, one of the main characters says, "This is my story." Then you see he's the main guy who organizes the break out. And since I noticed he had black hair in the beginning, I thought it was a director's mistake, as I had figured he escaped, and that it was not too long after the opening scene in the prison, which I thought was a spoiler. Then at the end, no one gets out, and they are locked up in solitary confinement. I was so upset to see Claude rat, and it's a thrilling twist. At first you think he won't want to escape, and we don't hear him say anything to the warden, but then Manu asks why he's been gone for 2 hours, so you suspect. Then you see them all getting ready to leave, and you assume he didn't rat. The periscope (spoon with a mirror) is used and as the guards check up, move along, you think it's on.. Then the next glimpse is one of the scariest shots I have ever witnessed - seeing all the guards lined up - you know they're caught.... Also, I would have thought that Geo would have been punished much worse as he would have known about the escape and not said anything.

Anyone notice how the details kinda dragged on. There was an odd scene where they dissolve, as the chisel takes forever, but the new shot is probably 30 seconds later judging by the amount chiseled. I like details, but not every second. Still a great movie.

The Rain People - 7/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2d/The_Rain_People.jpg Probably the most entertaining film of Coppola's. They had The Godfather on all weekend, and maybe it's because I've seen them all so many times. The Conversation is another great one, but this film was quite different.

James Caan is an ex-football player who gets brain damaged playing, and is given a "severance package" of a $1,000 and he is kinda lost, doesn't know what's going on, reminded me a little of Forrest Gump. He goes on to meet a woman - I think if it had been someone like Faye Dunaway the movie would have been a great hit, as the actress wasn't too great. The woman is running away from her husband, problems, as she's pregnant, and is also lost in life, so it would seem suitable that they find each other, but she can't take it - she wants to be alone, until she meets a cop (Duvall).

Did anyone notice in the phone booth, there are pictures of John Cassavetes which they show twice. I'm sure Coppola saw "Faces" - I had been meaning to see this film for so long, and it was on TV yesterday. Highly recommend it.

Also at the end, Robert Osbourne (host of TCM) says how Coppola worked with Duvall many times, and how he was nominated. Well, James Caan was nominated in the Godfather as well, and also worked with Coppola multiple times, just didn't mention it for some reason.

I think it was Matt who recommended it to me, but I'm not sure. Whoever did it, thanks a lot!
Amazing movie!!! Brando delivers the performance of a last time and I just love Lee J. Cobb!!! The sountrack is amazing and the way it portrays the rights of workers, corruption and fight for the truth is beautiful! It's also really really well shot with some great cinematography details!

It's nowhere close to Anderson's masterpiece There Will Be Blood, but I really liked the feel of the movie and the occasional humor.

I felt really anxious throughout the film but it was a good thing because I think it says a lot about how well-written and well-executed the movie is. J.K. Simmons did a great job. I would have probably cried as well if Fletcher was my teacher.

Housebound (NZ, 2014, Gerard Johnstone) - 4

The movie starts out like your average haunted house flick, but then takes a different approach to this genre. I was really surprised by this movie and enjoyed it a lot!

Nausicaa alerted me to that film because it has an actress from my favourite tv programme in it. She liked it, so I'm pleased to see someone else has seen and enjoyed it, too.

It's rather brilliant. I was hoping it wasn't going in one direction but then like Max said it takes a different approach. It did that twice in the film for me and thought it was a fabulous turn. One of my favourites from last year. :D

This is Not a Film (2011) - Jafar Panahi/Mojtaba Mirtahmasb (Iranian Documentary)
Panahi documents a day as he basically waits for news on his appeal against his six year jail sentence and 20 year ban on making movies ... and of course the way he passes the time is to make a movie that ended up being smuggled out of Iran. Considering my love for Iranian filmmakers like Kiarostami, Farhadi & Majidi I'm actually discovering Panahi quite late and have only really been alerted to him thanks to Bluedeed's post. So far I'm really liking what I'm seeing.

This is a very interesting documentary on a number of levels - it lets us into the mind of a filmmaker, it lets us see the absurdity of censoring filmmakers, it shows us how that censorship might actually help with the filmmaking process due to the need to find ever more creative ways to tell a story and get a message across and it also shows the resilience of people when faced with various types of adversity.

In some ways it showed Panahi to be a very "odd" character but also a very honest and "pure" filmmaker. I loved that faced with not being able to make movies for 20 years he was constantly filming - viewing the world around him through his camera and even his mobile phone when necessary.

The Hunter (2011) - Daniel Nettheim (Australian Thriller)
In some ways this movie sums up the Australian film industry - "arthouse" meets "mainstream". When you read it's plot synopsis it sounds like a standard action movie - "Martin, a mercenary, is sent from Europe by an anonymous biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for the last Tasmanian tiger." But, that doesn't really describe what the movie is about at all - it's quite a quiet contemplative movie about a loner finding something to care about.

By the end it had probably tried to do a bit much with a logging industry vs greenies sub-plot also thrown into the mix but overall I liked it.

Jurassic Park (1993) 7/10
Great action/adventure flick... it's a classic for good reason and I can't believe I haven't seen it before, except for some bits and pieces of it on TV. What really stands out is the score by the great John Williams who is responsible for some of the most popular film scores in history.

Glad you liked it, Sane! The moment where Panahi is diagramming and documenting his film for the camera, and then stops and says, "If we could tell a film why would we make a film?" and subsequently abandons the diagramming is a perfect moment in cinema. The deep, existential frustration of the law being imposed on him are laid most bare there. It's beautiful spontaneity and a moment of powerful, tragic force.

Greed (1924) - Erich von Stroheim (American Drama)
This is a very hard movie for me to rate. Parts of it were great but it was exceedingly long and the way it was put together made it hard for me to get really involved in it. The story behind it is that von Stroheim apparently made a nine hour movie that was only ever shown once and the movie studio immediately had it edited down to two hours. It has since been somewhat put back together with the use of photos taken during production and intertitles mixed with the remaining two hours of scenes to try to recreate the film von Stroheim wanted.

So what we have is a very interesting movie but it's four hours long and the parts with photos kept stopping me from really empathising with the characters. Anyway, I feel like my rating is perhaps a bit higher than my actual level of enjoyment but a bit lower than the film probably deserves.

The White Balloon (1995) - Jafar Panahi (Iranian Drama)
Panahi's first film (written by Kiarostami) is a nice story of a young girl who loses the money her mother gives her to buy a goldfish and her struggles to get it back ... Or at least that's how it appears but it's actually not overly "nice" as many of the characters she interacts with may not be as pleasant as they appear on the surface.

I love this Iranian version of neo-realism and whilst it may not be the absolute best example of that style it's still a really good film.

Footlight Parade (1933)

James Cagney movie that is loads of fun. Directed by prolific director of the time, Lloyd Bacon, with musical numbers directed by musical great Busby Berkeley. Cagney is stressed out by "talkies" becoming more popular than his staged musical comedies. So he comes up with the idea of "prologues," shorter musical events staged to play before the movie. It's funny because, by the last part of the movie, there's no way that these things are short----they're huge, knockout Berkeley kaleidoscopes, but no matter, it's a fun comedy for most of the movie, then mainly musical in the last third and Cagney gets to do some of his famed hoofing. A real treat for movie lovers.

April in Paris (1952)

Doris Day and Ray Bolger star in this musical about a State Department man with an obscure title (Bolger) who mistakenly sends an invite to chorus girl Day to represent the U.S. at an expo for the arts in Paris. Bolger is engaged to the daughter of a State Department bigwig, but falls for Day on the ocean trip to Paris, and comedic mix-ups happen. Lots of fun, with a show-stopping two-part number, "I'm Going to Rock the Boat," and "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight" that takes place in the ships kitchen with all the cooks, waiters, Doris, Ray, and even the ship's band taking part. Great stuff and recommended.

Pretty decent horror film thanks to Sarah Polley & Adrien Brody putting in good performances. It started to lose me a bit towards the end though because it changed from a sci-fi/horror movie dealing with interesting themes relating to genetic engineering into a kind of fantasy/action movie - lessened its impact a bit.

The Way Way Back (2013)

Awkward teen Duncan (Liam James), spends vacation with his mom (Toni Collette) , her jerk boyfriend (Steve Carell) and his rude daughter (Zoe Levin). They stay at a cottage next door to the mom's goofball friend (Allison Janney), who has a young son and a teen daughter (AnnaSophia Robb) who slowly makes friends with Duncan. But the person who really brings Duncan out of his shell is Owen (Sam Rockwell), who works at a local waterpark and hires Duncan. Owen is easy-going, goofy, and refuses to take life seriously. In contrast to Duncan's would-be-dad browbeating him constantly, Owen always lifts Duncan up and despite their age difference, they became great friends. All the performances are fine, but I've got to single out Rockwell. He is consistently funny throughout the movie and has all the great lines. I've seen almost everything Rockwell has done and I'm a big fan of his, but this is my favorite "fun" role of his (yes, even over Galaxy Quest). A great movie I could watch over and over.

Made with Miike's usual visual flair this is an amusing movie based on a video game. Only problem was it was about 45 minutes too long and really started to drag.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) - Colin Trevorrow (American Comedy)
Nice quirky Indie comedy with Aubrey Plaza. Plaza is a bit like her tv co-star, Chris Pratt, in that they only ever really play one character ... but fortunately for them it's a really likeable character and it tends to work (or they make it work) in a range of different settings.

It was a slight disappointment for me that it got a bit cliched towards the end but the actual ending of the movie was great. Without the cliches I may have rated it half a popcorn box higher but it was stll enjoyable.
