Carol (2015)

The period detail was incredible, but it almost overshadowed the romantic plot. I know all movie adaptations change things from the book, but in shifting the perspective away from Therese I felt it lost some of the emotional power, Carol loses some of her mystery. It's still a good movie, but I wanted more from the love story.

I saw The Fundamentals of Caring on Netflix and even though it won't be known as one of the best films of 2016, it's pretty good. One of the film's greatest strengths is Paul Rudd. His onscreen charisma and comedic talent really turns his character away from bland to really fresh and likable. Rudd also uses his dramatic chops every now and then. While it does not always work, when it does it really does. Craig Roberts is also a standout in Fundamentals, giving the film some dry humor as well as a likable *******. The cinematography and direction may not be the most original, but they are both appealing and well done. The soundtrack is really cool and the script offers some twists on the genre while still creating interesting characters and an interesting plot.

I only have 3 main problems with this film. One is Selena Gomez. While she sometimes gives a good performance, she often feels flat and like she is trying too hard. And when she curses, it honestly sounds like a kid who likes to curse. That probably won't bother a lot of people, but it was a bit annoying for me. She has a good acting career ahead of her if she tries to be a little less generic and finds her voice since some of her stuff is really good. My second problem is the script, which as you read was something I liked. While it does offer some cool twists and interesting characters, plot, dialogue etc., it still couldn't manage to escape the indie comedy-drama genre that it very clearly is in. Every time an indie song comes on, you are reminded of that. The beginning was actually brilliant. It starts off really cold and depressing while having a sense of charm, I loved it! But when the 2nd act starts, it veers off into generic territory. My last problem is that some moments in the film try too hard to pull at the heartstrings when the film has not developed that kind of a movie. The first time it hinted at a certain plot point (no spoilers here) during the first act, it was really effective (no tears, but a real sense of depression and sadness). But as the film continues on, it becomes more of that generic indie dramedy which (unless done very well) makes it a lot harder for you to feel for any of the characters emotionally.

Overall, the Fundamentals of Caring is another successful Netflix Original with fun characters, a really unique and fresh 1st act, great performances from Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts and a script that (for the most part) offers up some cool ideas but it is unfortunately weighed down by a lackluster and disappointing performance by Selena Gomez, a generic tone, direction and plot as the film progresses and failed attempts to make those tears flow. 3.5

I don't know what took me so long to watch this. The cyber-crime angle was probably why. Mann's work is instantly recognizable. The lights, the "looks like home video but not" style and the sound of gunfire. The latter may be more impressive than the lighting.

This movie works, regardless of the techno-who-dunnit bits. From start to beginning, it moves fluidly without a stutter. I put this on late as the "go to bed movie" and I stayed awake until the end.

Surprisingly enjoyable. Not usually a fan of romantic comedies but this one isn't bad at all. The dialogue is at times....odd but the performances are really what saves this movie. Emilia Clarke is a great, Claflin is good, also seeing Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance lol) smile is weird...

That's really interesting. I was watching it with a few friends a couple weeks ago and we were laughing our heads off, not in a good way. We all found it so boring and unrealistic except for the action sequences. But, I'm glad you liked it. :)

Independence Day - 8/10 - Average acting, average story, and mostly average dialogue, but it has some fantastic sound quality and music, and if definitely earned its VFX Oscar! It also has one of the best rallying speeches in all of the movies I've ever seen! I'd say it's either #1 or #2 in Roland Emmerich's best movies. (If it's #2, then The Patriot would be #1.)

Mad Max: Fury Road - 10/10 - Rewatched recently and I actually enjoyed it more the second time! I still think the doof warrior is overrated, though. Aside from that, beautifully made movie - definitely in the top ten best of 2015!

Green Room (2016) rating_3
http://i.imgur.com/lEgv2Hm.jpg?1

While everyone raved about Blue Ruin, I found myself a bit distant from it. I don't even recall why exactly, only a bit of empty space between me and the events happening on screen. Still, its charm lay in its extremely grounded reality and subversion of expectations.

Green Room submits a premise with far more potential, but fails slightly to deliver the elements I appreciated from Jeremy Saulner's initial effort. In fact, it's kind of... well, dumb. While the cold and clinical performance from Patrick Stewart is convincing as a logical authority, I couldn't wrap my head around some of the decision making. The Nazi punks' approach to the entire situation got convoluted. Everything felt very contrived as opposed to Saulner's earlier naturalist take on things.

The locked room problem, not unlike the one presented in 10th Cloverfield Lane earlier this year, is an excellent vehicle for on screen problem solving that requires a sound logic. I don't consider myself a pedantic viewer like so many Youtube critics are, but the whole dynamic of the movie encourages critical thinking. This same picture with a little more simplicity could've won me over a lot more. A little less COD: Nazi Zombies and a little more Escape from Alcatraz.

Green Room gets a bit too messy for its own good and that's no in reference to the excellent tidbits of ultra-violence. Fortunately, the characters are effortlessly likeable in the first act, one that could have extended to an entire SLC Punkesque full length without a complaint from me. Saulner definitely crafts an interesting aesthetic in punk culture, one that he respectfully never parodies or even really cheaply leans on with an all star soundtrack. I can see why people love this film, but once again I'm a little luke warm.

The Visit (2015)

Entertaining horror/mystery flick about a brother and sister who go to visit their grandparents in the country. The grandparents, day-by-day, start acting weirder and weirder. Both kids are into filming, with the girl making a film on her "Nana" and "Pop Pop" and the boy filming also, catching some pretty strange things. I really enjoyed this film and thought the woman playing Nana (Deanna Dunagan) especially very effective at portraying madness. I've seen some of that from someone as a child and she gave me some chills bringing that across, although I never experienced anything that bad. Bad enough, but not like Nana. Things were set up nicely to give us a good ending, especially with the son. Although sometimes it plays like a "found film" movie, it's not, and is much better than most films of that genre.

Private Lives (1931)

Total fun, with a divorced couple (the beautiful Norma Shearer and the handsome Robert Montgomery) arriving at the same hotel with their new husband and wife, and ending up in adjoining suites. Norma and her new husband start bickering as do Robert and his new wife. With adjoining balconies that abut, Norma and Robert see each other, join on one balcony, and reveal that they never stopped loving each other. If this sounds like a romance, it is a bit, but mostly it's an uproarious comedy, with the exes running off together, leaving their new mates in the lurch, with the movie following them on their journey. They travel to Switzerland, prepare to have a wonderful reunion and began quarreling almost immediately. They make up, quarrel, make up, quarrel, etc. etc. If this sounds monotonous, it's not. Every time the arguing gets to be too much, they come up with a funny safe word to stop arguing for at least two minutes. When the two minutes are up, they've usually cooled off and are romantic again. At first. Nothing ever goes as planned. Reginald Denny plays Shearer's new hubby and the great Una Merkel plays Montgomery's new wife. Funny stuff.

The Scorch Trials (2015)

Second in a series of films based on "The Maze Runner" books by James Dashner (I believe there are five in all, with the last two being prequels). The good thing about this is that so far, for YA adaptations, the movies are well-made and the acting good, with lots of action and mystery to overcome any plot holes. If there were any holes, I didn't notice them, probably because I wasn't looking for them. The movie picks right up where the first left off, with the kids who lived in "The Glade" having escaped The Maze that surrounded them, being picked up by a helicopter that flies them to "safety." Well, it's pretty obvious that's not the truth, as Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) has his eyes open the whole time, suspecting and confirming what he fears. The teens are soon forced to escape their haven, only to make it out into a world that is covered with desert and the ruins of a city. Kudos to the movie for answering mysteries set up in the first film, including why the kids where picked in the first place to be in the Maze of the first film, why new arrivals begin to disappear, who's running things, and what the virus talked about in the first film that decimated most of the world does to people. It turns them into crazed zombie-liked people, much like the people with the "Rage" virus in "28 Days Later." Plus, it's revealed if the rumored safe haven in the mountains beyond the desert is real and who might be there.

As I said before, good acting is part of the appeal here, with the same actors from the first film that escaped coming back, plus new characters played by Giancarlo Esposito, Barry Pepper, Rosa Salazar, Aidan Gillen, Lili Taylor, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Alan Tudyk. Another second installment of a series that actually has me looking forward to the third.

Being a Luc Besson fan, I so wanted this to be good, and it could've been. I think the mistake he made was the asinine assumption that using more of your brain gives you levitation powers etc. I would have more fully enjoyed the personal transformation of Lucy from a clueless bimbo into a super-intelligent person in terms of emotion and thinking. But they took the low road.

On the other hand, yesterday morning I took one of those brain supplement pills, and I moved my coffee cup from the counter to my desk without touching it, so he may be on to something....

Lucy: 0_5: Historically awful. Holy **** this was a terrible movie. Bad acting, painful screenplay, pathetic over-editing, mediocre action. It's the kind of blockbuster that's too self-serious to be fun and far, far too stupid to be anything else. I don't really care about the 10% thing, this fake scientific rumor that drives the plot, but the film is just completely awful at everything. There's no real plot, there are absolutely no characters, and it doesn't seem to have a genre. If it was trying to be an action movie, it fails because there is only one action scene. If it was trying to be a thriller, it fails because the protagonist is (by design) invincible, so there's nothing to emotionally care about or build tension. If it was trying to be a philosophical sermon, it fails because it mixes very obvious symbolism and very basic themes about humanity with blatant incorrect science. I like plenty of movies because of the "feel" of them, even though they don't contain a plot or characters, but Lucy is not unique or stylized enough to get by on that. If you like this movie, I genuinley want to know why, because I cannot think of a single positive aspect of it.[/QUOTE]

Awakenings

This movie was a very interesting movie and got me researching the story behind it all after it was done. I had read a lot of people recommend this movie and I finally got around to watching it. The acting in it was superb with Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, it is always odd to me seeing Williams in a dramatic role as I have always associated him with a great comedian actor. Robert De Niro had a good year with this and Goodfellas being popular that year. This was also an eye opener with people in a catatonic state and how they have had to live in a body with no function. Highly recommending this movie.

Derek, I haven't seen Green Room but I wanted to thank you for that top picture with Imogen Poots in it. She is very beautiful, especially those eyes, but she has one of the most unfortunate last names in film history. I bet she went through hell in school. Slightly off-topic, I'm currently watching the Cameron Crowe-produced show Roadies that plays on Showtime, and Imogen is in it, playing an American and doing a great job with her voice (and her looks :)).

This Japanese movie is about the lives of a few girls who work at a legal brothel. It focuses on their families, the men in their lives, and their hopes and dreams, or lack thereof. They also ponder a possible upcoming law against prostitution. This is a real easy watch at under 90 minutes, with some decent emotion. It's the 4th strong 50's movie I've seen from director Kenji Mizoguchi after Sansho the Bailiff, The Life of Oharu, and Ugetsu. I'd still like to see Crucified Lovers.

Genre: Drama/Thriller
Starring:
Richard Gere,Susan Sarandon
Brit Marling,Tom Roth,
Laetita Casta and Nate Parker
2012

Richard Gere plays a rich, powerful business man with the seemingly happy wife and beautiful daughter. Things go awry when he crashes his car, leaving his young beautiful mistress dead.

I have the same thing with Richard Gere as alot of people here have with will smith-Richard Gere is Richard Gere in every movie.Thats not to say he was bad though, his performance was okay-Susan Sarandon however was awful and monotone-by far the worst performance ive seen from her.Brit Marling was okay, but her face was rather dead in some of the dramatic scenes. Nate Parker was the stand out for me and Tim Roth is always great.

The storyline is pretty good, though something thats been done before-and done better.
This is a movie that had great potential but fell short of what it was trying to achieve

Went on a movie binge for the first time in a while. The general theme was Maisie Williams but she doesn't have the biggest filmography sadly (yet) so the last film in this post doesn't have her in it.

Cyberbully (2015) 3.5

A rewatch, I looked and I never actually posted a review for this last year so here it is. The obvious silver lining is Maisie's performances which is fantastic. The overall theme as you can probably gather from the title, has to do with cyberbullies. The story itself isn't bad for a tv movie.

The Falling (2014) 3
The single weirdest film I have seen in years. I have to be honest, I did not understand half this movie. Then the ending is very anti-climatic and weird as hell. This movie was just weird, but I did get some laughs out of it. I guess they were going for a psychological spin on sexual abstinence? Maybe?

http://img.rp.vhd.me/4859453_l1.jpg
Heatstroke (2013) 1.5
Ugh. All I can say for this movie. Maisie is okay in this one, about the only okay thing about it. The dialogue from the main female actress in this movie was horrendous, but Stephen Dorff who plays Maisie's father isn't bad. Peter Stormare is also in this and his performance is good like it usually is. Another disappointing ending to a movie that had a semi-promising opening.

Sam Rockwell, rocks again, but alas the movie itself was a bit of a bummer. There was some funny moments but the overall story was sort of by the numbers.

This was my first time seeing this since I saw it at the movies about 15 years ago. I remembered it as possibly my favorite Hitchcock, and while I still think it's very good, it's not at the level I thought it was. I found a good bit of it unbelievable, and that bothered me.

This isn't exactly news considering the fact that, you know, I've seen it four times. Besides, I've actually given out a couple of other 4 ratings in this thread in the past few weeks, but by all means single this one out.

Yeah, I definitely feel like my rating has leveled out at 4 and I can't see it increasing anytime soon, but I think a film that proves a consistent 4 experience time and time again is a rare enough thing for me.

independence day 2016, I only give it a 7 at best. I remember the release of the first one, at the end of the movie people were actually standing up cheering and clapping in the theater. On top of that, it had Will Smith in it. The second movie had an almost impossible task of even being considered anywhere as near as the original. Also the plot that there is now another superior alien race, where were they 20 years ago? Very poor way for us to demonstrate independence, by relying on another alien life form.

From the Ebert list comes this Italian film set in the 1800's during an Italian/Austrian conflict. A married Italian countess betrays her country and everyone in her life when she has a love affair with an Austrian officer. Rather than a feel good romantic story, this movie ends up being powerful and tragic. I rarely enjoy historical type films, but I loved the story, it's beautiful to look at, and has an exceptional musical score.

Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) by Richard Linklater

4

This draws on some of Linklater's best and worst attributes as a director but overall it's one of his better movies in his later career. This movie is so full of testosterone and male utopia and dystopias that it could almost be a Hawks film if not for the lack of any sort of strong female presence. Working with groups of archetypal characters interacting in short windows of time is pure classic Linklater and what he does best, but his POV is limited to a completely male purview. All of the women in the film are idealized objects of desire and goalposts for the highly competitive guys. This isn't necessarily an incorrect way to represent a guy's entry into college but it limits the scope and opportunities of a film that is filled to the brim with them. That's my only real gripe with the film besides Linklater's somewhat waning ability for naturalism

I had to catch my breath after stepping out of the nostalgia time machine. Synth-pop musical scores tend to excite me more than they should.

A great premise of counterfeit money, Secret Service agents and moral quandary. Unfortunately, some of the cast really dropped the ball in parts. Kinda like having jv players on the court with the pros. Chunky dialogue and acting were more jarring than some of the face paint seen here.

Dafoe and Turturro were great, but somebody threw in a guy from some procedural crime drama. Excessive male nudity was noted, as well as Dafoe looking like a Brad Pitt clone in scenes.

Going on Ebay this week!

The Idiot (1951)

4.5-

I didn't know anything about this movie, and only picked it out because it's directed by Akira Kurosawa, and stars Toshiro Mifune.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jBU924Gu61k/UTaML6QkP-I/AAAAAAAAMZs/nSNulbrW6AY/s1600/Toshiro+Mifune+The+Idiot.PNG

This is a very difficult movie for me to judge. Like The Magnificent Ambersons, this movie was dramatically cut against it's director's wishes. It is still 2 hours and 45 minutes long, but there were 100 minutes that were taken out and lost. I had a hard time following what was going on. Some of that could be due to the cut, but more than likely part of it was just me having a tough time. When characters that were offscreen were being talked about, it was difficult for me to understand who was who.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DDZ3pzwBMp4/SkVKOlOwcyI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/1Eumj8wYpjQ/s1600/vlcsnap-3076457.png

So I knew Toshiro Mifune was in this, but then I really got excited when the smiling chick from all those Ozu films appeared. I had never seen her in anything else before. Wow, what an actress and screen presence, she had me spellbound. Now I kind of feel like she was limiting herself by being in so many Ozu films, and in a way, playing the same character. Then the dude from Ikiru showed up and I was even more excited. As great as these three were, they were only a small part of a large cast that was phenomenal.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DDZ3pzwBMp4/SkVK-0NUcxI/AAAAAAAAAe4/U24RaS1uQ3A/s1600/vlcsnap-3086071.png

With it's length and my difficulty following the narrative, I don't think I fully appreciated this movie as a whole. It's more a case of me seeing it's strengths in individual segments. I think it's a movie of astounding beauty and power, from the innocence of the title character, to the different character's relationships and interactions, to the superb visuals and musical score. I think this movie was close to being a special masterpiece.

My favourite thing ever.

I didn't know anything about this movie, and only picked it out because it's directed by Akira Kurosawa, and stars Toshiro Mifune. Well, essentially, it's based on a book by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, but since you knew who the director and one of the actors were, you indeed knew something about it! I know, I'm nit-picking.
Like The Magnificent Ambersons, this movie was dramatically cut against it's director's wishes. It is still 2 hours and 45 minutes long, but there were 100 minutes that were taken out and lost. Yeah, it's always a terrible thing when censors destroy director's vision. Same happened to numerous von Stroheim films, but I believe The Greed was the one that was butchered the most. Originally, the movie was 8 hours long, but the producers massacred it to 2.5h. It is said that von Stroheim cried when he found out. I don't know, if Kurosawa reacted as emotionally, but he probably wasn't too happy about it neither. Anyway, In 2003 Russians made a 9 hour long mini-series very faithful to the book.
I had a hard time following what was going on. Some of that could be due to the cut, but more than likely part of it was just me having a tough time. When characters that were offscreen were being talked about, it was difficult for me to understand who was who. I can't remember the movie being hard to follow.
Now I kind of feel like she was limiting herself by being in so many Ozu films, and in a way, playing the same character. That's a very popular misconception. Hara is said to have appeared in more than 100 films (maybe not as many as all-Japan champion Hideko Takamine said to appear in at least 200 films, but still impressive) from 1925 (although her breakthrough migh've been either Priest of Darkness in 1926, or a German-Japanese co-production The Daughter of the Samurai one year later [she even visited Berlin and had a photo taken with Goebbels himself]) to 1962 (she starred with Mifune and Shimura in a chambara epic Chushingura). Then she gave up acting completely. What's more striking is that the period of time she wasn't an actress was much longer than the period of time she was one. There's a lot of interesting trivia about her that shatters the image of perpetual virgin so often assigned to her (although she never married, that's true):
Tatsuya Nakdai recalls the nervous tension around the studio during the shooting of kissing scene in “Daughters, Wives and Mother (1960)”, while Kyoko Kagawa tells us the story behind the set of “Tokyo Story”. Setsuko Hara surprised them with her frank personality, quite different persona from the screen. She loved beer, little gambling, countered young Ryo Ikebe’s off-color joke (”You have a big butt like a stone mill”) by kicking him. http://a.disquscdn.com/uploads/mediaembed/images/442/6404/original.jpg?w=800&h Early Summer

Yes, there was a kissing scene in that film. Two of my favourite actors (favourite male and female actor) kissed on screen. Now imagine that! Daughters, Wives and Mother is just a special movie. Maybe I will write more about it some time. It even has an aerobic-nanny Chishu Ryu appearing in two scenes (including the last one, which is the best thing ever)! The movie only needed Toshiro Mifune to be the best the-most-stars-in-one-movie film in history.
Sadly, a lot of Hara's films are very, very, very hard (if not impossible to get). I heard about a propaganda movie, in which she played a Chinese girl with a terrible Chinese faux-accent and about many more. There are some photos that shed new light on her (I know I'm exagerrating, but it sounds cool), in case somebody's interested:

Don't know the movie title, but sure looks interesting!

Then the dude from Ikiru showed up and I was even more excited. As great as these three were, they were only a small part of a large cast that was phenomenal. You forgot to mention Masayuki Mori, whose performance, in my opinion, overshadowed Mifune. He's yet another veteran of Japanese cinema, already familiarized with Setsuko Hara since 1947, when they both starred in Ball at the Anjo House. He had roles in films of Kurosawa, in Mizoguchi's Ugetsu as well as a fair number of Mikio Naruse flicks (co-starring with Takamine and, again, Hara). However, although always good, he never appeared as good as in The Idiot.

Stuff like To the Wonder makes me think that he only goes so far, too - plus, this editorial (birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/12/the-revenant-mad-max-and-the-nexus-of-cinematic-language) has made me question whether or not his craft, for all its technical skill and ambition, is necessarily effective for the film in question. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial - 10/10
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 10/10

Both films were directed by Steven Spielberg, had their music composed by John Williams, and dealt with the topic of aliens. Both were also extraordinary in every aspect!

With E.T., I'm not surprised with its Oscar wins in Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and VFX - it was all beautifully done! Everyone also did wonderful acting (even the kids did, which is honestly rare anymore), the story was fantastic and filled me with childlike wonder (as it had when I last saw it years ago), and the dialogue was terrific (and a bit funny at times)! Love this movie!

I think Close Encounters may be a bit underrated, but I would say that's understandably so as it was released the same year as Star Wars. Even so, I'd call it a great enough film to say that I'm shocked it wasn't nominated for BP! It also most certainly deserved its Cinematography Oscar - some of the best I've seen in all of the movies I've ever watched! And like E.T., fantastic acting, story, and dialogue!

Genre: Horror
Cast: Partrick Wilson and Rose Byrnes

So i found this when flicking through Netflix again.I was pleasantly surprised when I saw who the two main actors where as i didnt read about it first and they werent on the cover. I really like Rose Byrnes and Ive always had a thing for Patrick Wilson.
As for the movie-I thought the first half was really decent! It has that haunted house feel and sets a really good atmosphere-it has some obivous horror movies mistakes
like when the door rings,no ones there and you lock it,then your wife screams cos theres someone in your babies room and when you go back down the door is open with the lock broken-THATS WHEN YOU CALL THE POLICE

The second part of the movie they bring in ghosthunters ...it was still entertaining just not my cup of tea-i prefer the suspense part of horror movies. For those who liked the conjouring with Patrick will prob enjoy this too though i preferred the conjouring.Im still going to watch Insidious 2-3 though

Musicals are a bit of a hit or miss for me.and this one was a miss.I love the look of it,the staging and the grandness-but thats about it.Even for a musical it was way too much song for me-in the wrong places and on top of that the music used just wasnt for me,though i did like some of it.It had a quirkiness to it that i liked in,say, moulin rouge but just didnt appeal to be here. I wish they had gone full out drama/thriller with performances insted.

I can't believe they blatantly stole clips from Battlestar Galactica and got away with it. (surely they didn't have permission?)

The last 30 minutes were pretty funny - it's like the director gave up and let his cat finish the film. There's a sequence that might be the worst case of continuity I've ever witnessed.

Hats off to South Africa, you create really bad films too!

Watched this kind of reluctantly because of all the bad reviews but i really liked it. The fight scenes are almost as good as winter soldier and the cgi looked pretty awesome. One thing i didnt like was i feel like the movie kinda tried to match the different stories and point of views into one but it didnt really bond that well.

Ghostbusters (1984).

I know I'll get a bit of hate for this but here I go. It was very forgettable. One of the most bland and forgettable movies I have ever seen. Nothing very wrong with it but nothing right with it. Predictable, cheesy, bland performances, horrible visual effects etc. but mainly, it's just not my kind of movie. I feel that a lot of people like it for it's nostalgia, 80's charm and the fact that it (I guess) was original (in terms of predictability and familiarity) at the time. But for me, none of those thing work in my favor. Not for my taste. 5/10

I love Ashley Judd, but i havent seen her in anything for a while. Then I found this on netflix and saw it was from 2006 and i thought great finally a newish movie with her-then i remembered that 2006 and was 10 ****ing years ago.when did that happen?

Anyway..
Ashley Judd plays a woman in her 30s who lives with her sister, has no real substains in her life-she longs for a better relationship with her father and spends most of her time drunk in bar, going home with different men each timebefore sneaking out in the morning..Until she meets Cal who shows a real interest in her as a person.

The cast and acting is great, the whole "girls with daddy issues are drunks who sleeps around" is a bit of a cliche and overused but Ashley Judd is wonderful.
if you like everyday dramas you`ll like this one.

The Great Train Robbery (1903)

One of the earliest films in American history that survives to this day, this is a silent 15-minute Western that is deserving of its classic status. Although not the first movie with a narrative, it is one of the earliest. Some of the black and white is augmented with hand-coloring and is quite effective, coming in shots like the smoke from gunfire, the explosion of a train strongbox, and the dresses of women dancing with their outlaw boyfriends. My only regret is that I almost forgot it was only 15-minutes long and was really getting into it when it came to an end with the famous image of the cowboy firing his pistol right at the camera. A must-see for any film completest.

Crimson Peak (2015)

Very effective and moody ghost story that doesn't scare so much as involve you in its tale. Although the story is not hard to figure out, given that one character practically gives away motive fairly early on in the proceedings, it still serves up some entertainment from director Guillermo del Toro. The story has rich heiress Mia Wasikowska wooed by Tom Hiddleston, who is eager to get financing from her father for an invention but is turned down. Naturally the father is dubious when Hiddleston suddenly declares his love for his daughter. But, they are married and her father mysteriously murdered. Jessica Chastain is along for the trip with her brother Hiddleston and right away she seems very mysterious. Things only get worse when they arrive at the mansion of the siblings and things quickly get weird for Wasikowska who has already been warned of the place called Crimson Peak because of the red clay pulled from the ground by mining. The warning has come from her mother's ghost, both in Mia's childhood and once before she goes with Hiddleston and Chastain to their childhood home. She doesn't find out the name of the place until she is there and by then it's too late.

The movie, as I've stated before, is more creepy than scary, and there are ghosts, one malevolent and the rest trying to warn Mia of the danger she's in.. The effects are pretty creepy, yet I feel like I've seen ones like them before. Still, on the whole, the movie is highly watchable and enjoyable, with good performances by all involved. There are some twists and turns, some of which you'll see coming, some maybe not. Very much worth a watch.

On Moonlight Bay (1951)

Charming, colorful musical starring Doris Day and Gordon MacRae, but the movie is all but stolen by Leon Ames as the gruff but loving dad, and Billy Gray as the young, trouble-making son. Doris is young and beautiful and in perfect voice and Gordon is handsome and in great singing form, but I was always waiting for Ames and Gray to reappear. Gray especially provides lots of laughs as the son who is always breaking things, lying or spreading false gossip, and generally being a good-natured holy terror if you can see your way to combine those two. A fun movie worth seeing and even if you don't care for musicals, stick around for the comedy.

I'm not happy about rating this, since it was so oddly mesmerizing and fascinating and interesting that I still don't know where I stand. I could give this a first-watch rating of 3/5 and not hate myself for it, but know that it would likely be a much better rating if I let myself experience this strange and addictive atmosperic movie again...

Actually, I was tempted to start the film all over again once I finished, something I never considered or did before, but time got in the way, as did my belief in letting a movie continue its course in your mind after it has ended...

But for now, anyways, I'll just let my rating signal the fact, that I believe my body sees this as a masterpiece, but my mind has yet to settle about it...

I only saw this movie once, about 8 years ago for a German film class. I felt much the same way, and have been meaning to watch it again for awhile now. I might have to move it higher up my priorities list. (:

The stories about the problems they faced trying to film it, and the disputes between Herzog and Kinski makes me want to watch a documentary about it, in a similar vein to Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau.

Well you're in luck there's two that deal with stuff like this, not Aguirre but pretty much what you're looking for. Burden of Dreams deals with all of the problems in making Fitzcarraldo which was a lot more troubled than Aguirre, i mean they did have to pull a boat over a mountain. Then there's My Best Fiend which deals with Herzog's troubled relationship with Kinski.

Both are among my favourite documentaries.

My rating is 7, so I liked it. My biggest problems with the movie were inherent in it's premise of incredibly mismatched protagonists, but I think Snyder handled it well. Some unnecessary parts could have been cut off, but it had beautiful visuals and music to compensate. The worst thing about the movie was pointless doomsday destruction in the end.

But despite of my statements, BB is still like no other. And to be honest, for a fifth season it was suprisingly small-scaled and slow burning. Season 4 was more action packed. I liked how things went deeper and more personal than before. Season 5 is so masterful imo.

Maybe dislike was wrong word. To be more precise I liked it the least. One of the main reasons was that Walter had strong opposition no more. I guess it became more of a drama and less of a thriller.

Last Days on Mars (2013)

A good supporting cast a little bit wasted in a not particularly original sci-fi-horror-thriller. Zombies on Mars sounds more fun than it is. The thing is, The Martian proved that Mars doesn't really need zombies, and this movie suffers more by comparison.

You are still overrating it. This and Legend were very similar experiences for me. There are a couple little character elements that keep me from hating these films. They are bland other than that though. I couldn't tell you a thing about the plot except there is a girl. The dialogue in both is pretty forgettable. Not horrendous movies, but disposable entertainment for me.

I was gearing up for a 3.5 but unfortunately it got a little too caught up in trying to provide a bombastic action finale and lost the momentum of what is otherwise a consistently amusing and slick buddy comedy. I don't think plot is necessarily the most important element in a film - at least The Man From U.N.C.L.E. came up with some decent performers who had good chemistry (Cavill and Hammer made for a good odd couple, especially the former as a verbose charmer) and at least offered some clever spins on spy-movie clichés (such as the scene where Cavill watches a speedboat chase unfold or knowing to lie down once he realises he's been slipped a mickey). There's enough to put it above average and make it into something I have no problem with re-watching.

John le Carré Movie Adaptations

Although never read any of his books but still instantly became a fan of John le Carré when I first saw the BBC adaptation of 7-part TV miniseries (1979) Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and then the 6-part TV adaptation (1982) of Smiley’s People ...(starring Sir Alec Guinness as George Smiley and Sir Patrick Stewart as Karla) few years back. But I've to admit that actually the news of Tomas Alfredson making a feature film based on le Carré classic made me interested about Tinker Tailor & that's why I checked those BBC TV series back then before the film came out in 2011 (not much fan of the movie though, thought it was too rush and avoided many plot elements).

Where Ian Flemming focused more on action-extravaganza & introduced to a glamorous & adventurous espionage world to us through James Bond tales; le Carré, on the other hand went completely in opposite direction, as himself a former spy who served in both MI5 & MI6 during late 50s to mid 60s, always had this gritty & bleak look and realistic approach in his stories through anti-heroic protagonists who struggled with the ethical issues & immoral tactics involved in their espionage duties and that's always fascinates me about the stories of David Cornwell .a.k.a John le Carré (pen name).

After TTSP & Smiley's People, I was planning to check out his other film adaptation and finally lately began to track down them one by one.

https://s32.postimg.org/ordo19p7p/JLC.jpg

Among the above 6 films, loved The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) and The Constant Gardener (2005) mostly. Richard Burton starring The Spy Who Came in from the Cold was a pretty captivating & excellent slow burn spy thriller where a British agent sent to East Germany in order to sow disinformation about a powerful East German intelligence officer. Richard Burton played the central role of that British agent, Alec Leamas with a great dialog at the end when he was asked about the immoral aspect of his mission:
"What the hell do you think spies are? Moral philosophers measuring everything they do against the word of God or Karl Marx? They're not! They're just a bunch of seedy, squalid bastards like me: little men, drunkards, queers, hen-pecked husbands, civil servants playing cowboys and Indians to brighten their rotten little lives. Do you think they sit like monks in a cell, balancing right against wrong?"

The Constant Gardener was actually a damn good political thriller with a very moving & haunting tale with great performance from Ralph Fiennesand Rachel Weisz. I think I saw it once on TV before but not paid enough attention on that loose first viewing.

The Looking Glass War (1969) was a decent watch starring a young Anthony Hopkins about 'The Department' of British Secret Service sending a Polish defector to East Germany to verify missile sites. As a film nothing much spectacular but heard that the original book was more engaging & a great read.

Directed by Sidney Lument & starring James Mason; The Deadly Affair (1966) was based on le Carré's first novel Call for the Dead (1961). It was more like a detective drama+thriller than an espionage tale.

The Russia House (1990) was more of a fine romantic thriller with the backdrop of the final days of Cold War era. Bit aged but Michelle Pfeiffer stole the show for me as she looked so stunning throughout the movie.

A Most Wanted Man (2014) was a decent modern espionage tale but found that ending surprisingly kinda frustrating.

Still few le Carré Adaptations left to check out. Looking forward for to see The Tailor of Panama (2001) & Our Kind of Traitor (2016) in coming days but the sad news is so far couldn't able to find The Little Drummer Girl (1984).

Marlon Brando plays the leader of a motorcycle gang who roll unwanted into a small town. I thought this movie was a little odd in some ways. Brando gave a great performance in A Streetcar Named Desire a couple years earlier. In this movie, he is essentially playing a moody kid, and I didn't think his performance was all that great. I thought the rest of the cast did a better job than he did. It seemed to me to be a very strange follow-up to what he had done earlier. Still, the dominant Brando screen presence is there, and that's what the movie revolves around. His gang is a little rowdy, but they are more likely to break into song and dance than they are to commit serious crime. Of course, the movie is over 60 years old. It's only 79 minutes long, and it wasn't until a little over halfway through when the men of the town take action against Brando's character that the movie hits it's stride. It never comes close to reaching any kind of shocking level, but there's an accident, and there seems that there may be a message to it all. The movie had some really good dialogue, and I enjoyed watching Lee Marvin in the role as the leader of a rival motorcycle gang. The end result was a movie well worth watching.

Who you gonna call? Literally anyone else.

Let me start off by saying that I was not one of those people who hated on this remake from the time it was announced. I was open to the concept, and was willing to let the movie speak for itself. I went in with zero bias and came out thinking it was one of the worst movies I've seen in recent memory.

It gets half a star for Chris Hemsworth, who really needs to take on more comedic roles, and it would've gotten another half star for the end credits routine he featured in, but it went on far too long.

I enjoyed this because it suits my taste extremely well, but I did not think it was a very good movie. The characters and performances were serviceable for the most part, with the exception of Patrick Stewart as the main bad guy. That should have been a standout role full of menace and one-liners, but I thought he was almost unbelievably bland. The other problem with the movie is that it's idiotic. It's played straight enough that it should be much more realistic. On the plus side, the action and violence is done extremely well, and that's really the main reason I watch a movie like this. The tension is decent, but it felt manufactured. My wife likes movies like this too, but she though it sucked.

Another american Mr Macho war hero movie.
Im not a Bradley Cooper fan to say the least, and i wasnt impressed by him in this either-he was basically just his douche self.
As far as the characters go,i genuinely couldnt care less about them-wether it be him alone or his relationship with his wife which seemed pretty much non existent. There was no build up for me to care for any of them, it went from a scene of him treating his soon to be ex-girlfriend badly,to holding the new girls hair whilst puking,to marrying her.
They were just trying to jam too much into one movie- the build up with the problems he had at home didnt work for me either until the party but that was long into the movie and some of the dialogue is just laughable "you`re so real, you scare me" or "i do this for attention",or hey cliches like
"I see you,i feel you but you`re not really here" because her giving some actual good arguements for him to stay with his family and raise his own kids i assume just wouldnt be good for a pro-miliatry movie. What should have been the showdown and prob highlight of the movie was one of the worst scenes.
All in all-the acting was terrible and/or below mediocre from both the leads and the doll- none of the characters appealed to me and as for the war part we`ve seen it all before.

Haven't seen the movie, but I am almost sure my rating could be something like that just judging trailers and stuff.
I didn't really like the trailer, but I didn't think it meant that the movie would also be bad, because comedies in particular usually don't have great trailers. However I found that the trailer was actually very indicative of the writing and style of the movie. So if you didn't like the trailer, you probably won't like the movie.

I avoided all reviews and discussions about the movie before seeing it yesterday to avoid setting expectations or clouding my judgement, but I was secretly hoping that the movie would be good to show up the people online who hated it from the minute it was announced, for no reason other than the fact that it was a gender-swapped remake of a beloved movie.

I might be inclined to give the movie another chance when it comes out on video, but even the kids sat a few rows in front of me didn't seem to find it very entertaining, and that's usually not a good sign.

I think a significant reason for why I liked it a lot more than the other Zombie films I've seen is because it is so far removed from the slasher/hixploitation aesthetics that he usually favours that it seems incredibly fresh in comparison, whether it's the general high-brow 1970s horror Exorcist/Omen kind of vibe or the finale that looks like it belongs in a Nicolas Winding Refn film.

That may be the reason why we split on this movie.

That movie offended me like no other really have. Not just because it was rude and cruel, especially considering it's a true story. It also glorified violence and torture and I just didn't find that funny at all. I guess I could have enjoyed it as sort of an exercise in bad taste, but I thought the movie was so bad and poorly made that everything felt even more offensive...

To some extent though, I can agree about the fact that his movies never downright suck, but are just extremely mediocre or whatever, but it seems like, with time, he has turned more into straight up awfulness... at least for me. Transformers 4 was atrocious.

You are much younger than me, but I can tell you back when The Rock came out, people didn't even know who Bay was. Transformers is when the spotlight started shining on him, and he doesn't hold up to the scrutiny. He makes dumb films.

You nailed it, man. Pain & Gain felt very much like a parody of himself. He even had that 360 degree turn from Bad Boys II, so he doesn't only parody himself, he also copies himself for bad and for worse... well, we all know about how we have come to learn of "Bayhem". The many explosions, the oversaturated warm hues, the testosterone and masculine movie making and the rude and vulgar jokes...

Now, to complicate things, I do actually like Bad Boys II quite a lot, which got criticized for being rude and vulgar. I guess it's a combination of things why I like that one and not Pain & Gain, but anyways, I used to like Bay before Transformers. Back when I just enjoyed films on a general basis, I would actually call him my favorite director... Back then, I wouldn't say it was that bad of a thing to say. The dude could direct action, even if all the other parts didn't quite add up. The Rock was and still is great and his best work. I like the Bad Boy's, The Island and the first Transformers is still pretty good last time I checked. But that's where it started to go down hill... a lot.

I hear where you are coming from but we are on different pages taste wise. I hated the Bad Boys films, even way back then. Didn't care for The Rock much either. I thought Armageddon was fun at the time and I enjoyed The Island, although I couldn't tell you a thing about it. I still enjoy Transformers and contend it has been colored by the sequels which I think are horrendous. Haven't seen 4 though.

I went to see it with a couple guys I worked with thinking I would hate it. I don't have the nostalgia for Transformers, TMNT, and GI Joe like other guys my age. Maybe because my parents didn't buy me every toy on the market and my Saturday mornings were spent roller skating through most of my friend's cartoon years. Anyway, I went, and I loved it. Thought it was a hell of a lot of fun. I have soured a bit since my seven year old has watched it a dozen times. I still think it is solid though.

Dazed and Confused (Richard Linklater, 1993) 3.5

A rewatch for me, but my brother wanted to see this because he enjoyed Everybody Wants Some!! so much. Still a very good film, but we think that EWS is slightly better, certainly more laugh-out-loud funnier for us. Some great moments though, and Matthew McConaughey is fantastic in pretty much all the scenes he's in.

This is not the Apocalypse we asked for

I was mildly excited about seeing this, partly because a reduced ticket price meant little chance of buyer's remorse. Buyer Beware!

Let me start with the 3D. I avoid it because it does not perform at an acceptable level yet. The screen blur/stuttering is still jarring during action scenes and provokes me to remove my glasses. It also magnifies the obviousness of the green screen scenes to a point of being too obvious and game breaking.

How many more of these do I have to do?

I don't know if the choice of Apocalypse was an attempt to beat Marvel to the Thanos punch (of course it was), but it could not have been more undercooked. One of the greatest comic book villains is reduced to a rhetoric spewing prophet that postures the entire movie. The only true scene of his awe-inducing ability is neutered by using it in "dream" state. Please take note Marvel.

The film spends way too much time spinning its wheels setting up the narrative and leaving one starved for action. Unlike a movie such as Guardians  , the slow bits just drag and did little to endear me to the characters. Throw in some horrid wire work and I was over this experience.

Are we done with scenes of epic destruction? I just  at this stuff anymore. Until someone can reinvent the wheel, this is your cue to go to the loo.

The MCU ain't got nothin on me!

The Quicksilver scene is the highlight of the movie, but you already knew that. Fassbot is great as usual, exposing his lower teeth and growling his dialogue. Nowhere close to enough screen time left me :( . If only the movie could have sustained the momentum from its epic opening, this movie could have been so much more.

Most recent film for me was The Neon Demon that is currently in theatres. I reviewed the movie on my YouTube channel and gave it an A. I really liked it.

Whoops. I mentioned this film to you in another thread - I actually meant to say "Who Done It?". (as their funniest) Hold That Ghost is still pretty good though.

I'm planning on watching some Laurel & Hardy soon to see how they stack up against other comedians from that era.

CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE
(2016)

The movie is not your award-worthy scripted film with character development and such, but it was a fun way to waste almost 2 hours.

Dwayne Johnson is likable, as always, as a former obese high school student who was a victim of bullying opposite the once popular Kevin Hart, who plays the same role he's been playing in all of his films so far.

If you're looking for laughs, the movie has some, but aside from that, nothing much to see here.

POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING
(2016)

Andy Samberg turns in a decent and funny performance in this mock-umentary of a pop star named Conner Friel (A.K.A. Conner 4 Real)
who was once part of a big boy band, but goes solo after a fallout with his band mates, and continues making ridiculous music and some really bad choices.

The movie is clearly a dig at modern day pop stars, especially Justin Bieber.

The movie has some really funny moments, especially the cameo appearances by such artists as Ringo Starr, Seal, Adam Levine, and others; but like the main character, it cannot be taken seriously.

VACATION
(2016)

I'm a big fan of the original Vacation movies starring Chevy Chase, who makes a guest appearance in this new installment. The casting of the always hilarious Ed Helms and Christina Applegate helps this new Vacation movie.

Before I watched it, I expected myself to hate it, but I must say that I enjoyed it and laughed quite a few times.

Mojo, I never knew that Popstar was a satire of modern day pop and it's central stars, I initially thought it was a sappy drama about a fictional artist. Now I'm interested in checking it out.

A heavy metal New Zealand teenager opens up the gates of hell with his guitar.

Brodie is a shy, picked-on metalhead who finds himself chainsawing and eviscerating nasty demons like a pro. Set your expectations-meter on low, and you'll have a fun time with this one. The demons are particularly gross, evil and ugly, with broken teeth and blood dripping from every orifice. They do get theirs, fortunately, whether it's from a chainsaw, axe, dildo, electric drill, or grinder.

Very tongue-in-cheek, both jokewise and gorewise, and pretty funny.
It's a fun change from the normal stuff when you're in the mood.

These are the kind of things I want to hear about this movie. I've been meaning to watch Deathgasm for awhile now, but I feel like it's either going to be really fun, or one of the worse movies ever, so I haven't gotten around to it.
