Zeta One (GB, 1969, Michael Cort) - 1.5
A c-movie spy-spoof-comedy with lots of T'nA. Obviously, pretty bad (although intentional) but the first 30-35 minutes were kind of amusing. The rest is absolutely boring. The funniest thing is a superstitious elevator which will stop at the 12th floor. :D

Southpaw (2015)
"The best boxing movie since Raging Bull" reads the poster promoting the film Southpaw, and that is a complete exaggeration. There are numerous other boxing films since Raging Bull that are far more superior than this film about real-life troubled lightweight champion Billy "The Great" Hope: the list includes Million Dollar Baby, The Fighter, Ali, The Hurricane, and Rocky III through Rocky Balboa -okay, you can exclude Rocky V.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Hope quietly and at a very low-tone, even in scenes where his character is begging for some raw and intense emotions -the scene when his wife is killed, for example. I could only imagine how much better, or worse, the film could have been had rapper Eminem played the part, and, admittedly, I wish he did. Even Forrest Whitaker, who plays the part of the down-on-his luck trainer, doesn't offer much to a part that could have stolen the entire movie from or rivaled its leading star (alas Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby, Burgess Meredith in the Rocky films, or Christian Bale in The Fighter), but, instead, his character is a 'cliché' and he plays it "safe".
Overall, the movie lacked the heart and brilliant performances that made most of the previously mentioned boxing films gripping and entertaining classics.

Animal Crackers (1930)
Another of the earlier Marx Brothers movie is great fun, but nowhere near my favorite. Still, it is chock-full of their famous gags. like Groucho's "One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas" joke, his "Pardon me while I have a strange interlude," his recitation of "Hello, I Must Be Going," the song, "Hooray for Captain Spaulding," the site gag with the cop shaking Harpo's hand and bunches of cutlery falling out of Harpo's sleeve (this goes on for a great while) and Groucho says, "I can't understand what's delaying that coffee pot" and then, you guess what comes next.
There's a slight plot about the boys at a upper-crust mansion with their constant foil, Margaret Dumont as the hostess to a famous acquirer of paintings who is bringing one such painting to be shown off at a party. Two different pairs of people bring their own version of the painting and want to see if anybody can tell the difference, one pair as a mean joke, one pair to promote the painter of the other fake. Of course it gets all mixed up as to who has the original or the fakes, with Groucho proclaiming himself as an "Inspector of Scotland Yard" and the cop believing him! Just all kinds of fun stuff, but for some reason I found my attention drifting. So while it's not my favorite, it's still a good one and well worth watching.

This is sort of an action/adventure/thriller about diamond smuggling set during an African Civil War. The horrifying atrocities that come with the setting lifts up the standard plot and gives it some meaning.
http://cdn.moviestillsdb.com/sm/962bc8dadbcdf0bf488878bf5cc17071/blood-diamond.jpg
Leo Dicaprio plays a smuggler and Jennifer Connelly a journalist; they have both done better work but their good is good enough. I thought that Djimon Hounsou was the standout as a local who finds a precious diamond after he gets separated from his family. He teams up with Leo's character, and they help each other with their different goals.

I wouldn't say anything in particular about the movie was special, but as a whole it is very strong. It's almost 2 1/2 hours long and it never dragged. It is entertaining while giving off a sense of urgency. This was the 5th good movie I've seen from underrated director Edward Zwick. The next movie I watch of his will most likely be Glory. Oh yea, my wife enjoyed this movie quite a bit as well.

Odviosuly influenced by the Saw films and, with the exception of Jeffrey Combs, let down by a mostly terrible cast (which included a former porn star who actually looks more of tramp in this than in the porn films she performed in.) This is just one of the numerous Saw clone game-type horrors that have been popping up over the last few years. The ending is underwhelming to say the least..

Classic science fiction. Creppy but at the same time smart execution of the classic A.I. sci fi concept. Also, rather creppy, I also noticed it was made by the same guy as 28 days later, indeed, it's very similar in the style it was made.

I haven't seen this since the first AFI list came out in '98. I really didn't remember anything besides Rosebud and I would have known about that a long time ago. It really is a fantastic film. The camera work and editing is absolutely brilliant. Every other shot I found myself thinking I am going to remember that shot. Of course the characters and story are fantastic as well, but the style is what has this film talked about as the greatest ever I think. I loved watching Welles and Cotten too. I won't let it be seventeen years until I see it again. Especially now that I have the sweet 70th anniversary blu-ray.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (McQuarrie, 2015)
http://i.imgur.com/3PI8MYg.jpg
So... because of traffic I actually missed the wonderful scene where Tom Cruise hangs on a airplane, thus making me slightly pissed when I finally sat down on my designated seat. The start of a 2 hour journey was not very pleasant.
But damn the rest of the movie made up for the bad start, and even made me forget that I had one in the first place! This is now my favorite film in the entire Mission Impossible series. Everything in this film has evolved... to kill one man, and that's Tom f*cking Cruise. He's as old as my dad but still wants to run, gun, and have fun, but there are so many things in his way. This time, there are three agencies who's ultimate goal is to kill him for their own benefit, an underwater vault with secret information and of course danger such as no oxygen, water pressure, and a rotating metal thing that keeps introducers out of reach. And most deadly of all, a sensor that tracks a person's movement and uses it to allow access or not, making masks and fakes identities useless!
These enemies are even more skilled, diverse, and rogue than last time. Especially diversity, since they seem to drag Tom Cruise and his buddies into every type of fighting possible. Motorcycle chases, car chases, hand-to-hand combat, swordfights, and good oil' running. It's like a Greatest Hits album, with a driving pace. The best part out of all of this is that the film is obviously self-aware, yet it keeps a serious face throughout. For example, there is a scene where Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg are escaping from some terrorists using a car. The result is the car flipping in the air 5 and a half times (I counted), and nobody getting hurt, not even a crash. When they get out from the wreckage, it's like something happening everyday.
Sure, this is not a perfect film, but if you want to go to theaters this year and have actual fun and sheer enjoyment, I recommend Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

I'm glad you liked it, Gatsby. I guess technically it might not be a perfect film, but personally, I didn't feel like there was a single misstep in it.

Yeah, it was basically "as good as it gets". The most you can expect from a summer flick is MI5.
I also really liked some other small things, such as Simon Pegg getting almost as much screen time as Tom Cruise, and Rebecca Furguson. She's super hot IMO without trying to act like she is.

This is a Korean film in which a young, single city girl, who is under a lot of stress, takes a vacation to the remote island where she grew up, and where her childhood friend still lives. Her friend lives there with her young daughter, her very abusive husband and his brother, and a handful of sicko old timers.

The first two-thirds of this movie are terrific. It's disturbing watching how the childhood friend is treated, and what it leads to. Eventually, the friend snaps, and it turns into a horror movie. I love horror, but that's not the direction this movie should've went in. It was doing great the way it was, and the horror element lessened the overall impact. It's still a very good movie, and very well made.

If someone were to call this a perfect film, I wouldn't put up much of a fight. This is without question, one of the most powerful films in cinema history. I really wish that the film had a higher quality print or restoration though. The version that I viewed was in very low quality. My objective evaluation of the film wasn't hindered, but my enjoyment was a little bit. I hope this gets a restoration one day, it sure as hell deserves it.

Miyamoto Musashi (1961) - Tomu Uchida
The first in a somewhat forgotten series of six films tracing the life of Miyamoto - a well known figure from Japan's history it seems. This film is basically about him learning to become a samurai and it's a role made for a Mifune or a Nakadai ... but unfortunately they aren't in it. The cast is still pretty good with, among others, Chieko Naniwa and Rentaro Mikuni who have had supporting roles in many classic films from that era. This is quite a restrained Samurai film and whilst it was well made it didn't really engage me. It was decent but nothing more.

Miyamoto Musashi: Showdown at Hannyazaka Heights (1962) - Tomu Uchida
The second in the series had me more engaged - the role of Miyamoto felt more fleshed out and the addition of a child character gave the film more heart. Still a restrained samurai film, until the last 10 minutes, but a more interesting one and I'm now looking forward to the rest of the series.

I thought this was pretty good the first time I saw it in 2008, but it doesn't really hold up with its fairly bland tale of intertwining married couples and a potential murder mystery.
Dogtown and Z-Boys - 7.5/10
Really enjoyed this. Wouldn't say I was ever into skateboarding but like most good documentaries it got me interested in something I know little about. The connections between surfing and the origins of skateboarding were interesting, as well as how everybody ended up after the Z-Boys split up. Some great footage and photos too.

Documentary I have heard about a couple of times on a podcast I listen too. It's about the importance of comedy and more specifically about what is crossing the line. The production value is high so don't be scared off by the fact that it is not well known. There is a ton of great footage. It is all from one point of view which probably kept me from loving it. However, that point of view is coming from a very level headed thoughtful person so there is very little chance of someone being offended. Worth a watch and available on you tube.

American Gangster (2007)
A solid crime flick. Was kept short of loving it though, it didn't seem very exciting for the first 2 hours of the 2 and a half hour run-time. The last 30 minutes though were great, and made the film worth seeing. It was also kinda weird because I liked Denzel's character a lot more than Crowe's, but I liked Crowe's side of the story a lot more than Denzel's. Overall, I recommend it for crime fans.

I will.. But I find it shocking that the man who really "invented" modern standup comedy (Sahl) isn't included, or Bill Hicks... I think out of music, film, and comedy, that comedy has suffered the least because of the logistics - it's still a microphone.. Many don't have much to say, but there are a handful of comedians now worth watching, as opposed to technological "advancements" that replaced music and film with fake stuff..

Biggest misconception.. Lenny Bruce was influenced by Mort Sahl.. Before Mort Sahl (early 50's) was burlesque and vaudeville.. End of mother-in-law jokes, and his satire drew blood. Lenny Bruce was very incoherent, couldn't finish a sentence. Morality of a teenager, and not profound, sentimentalist, and made his bones by cursing.. And then when he died, he was more popular than ever.
Mort Sahl ran into a lot of blacklisting problems, McCarthy (Joe), Eisenhower, Nixon, and then when he wrote for JFK, they thought he'd kiss his butt, but attacked him and everyone.. No sacred cows. I find people I know don't have the patience or attention span to listen to a Mort Sahl record. And to be honest, it took me years to fully understand the act. For one, his imagination and intelligence is amazing, but also how he could see through it all. Truth was his thing. Also, you have to really study up on what was going on in the 50s, 60s, and to the present, since he always talked about current times.

School for Scoundrels (2006) - Todd Phillips
It's pretty amazing that Phillips was able to get anyone to finance his next film after he made this piece of crap. But, I'm glad he did because The Hangover is one of the best comedies of recent years. Apart from being funny I thought it was remarkably well made for the type of film it was. I wasn't so keen on the sequels but they were both ok. Anyway, enough about The Hangover ... School for Scoundrels is awful and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves ...

Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Brilliantly acted film, which is either about the acting process, the actor's ego, the mental breakdown of an actor, or all of the above. It doesn't matter to me, I was enthralled from start to finished. Michael Keaton's Riggan is a former super-hero actor who needs to revitalize his faded career. He does it by financing (with help from his best friend, Jake), adapting, directing, and starring in a Broadway play. Once his supporting actor is injuring by a falling light, he replaces him with Mike (Edward Norton), who has a massive ego and is basically an all-around ass.
He's also surround by a group of varying types, including his daughter, Sam, his ex-wife, Sylvia, his girlfriend, Laura...and Birdman. I don't want to spoil anything for anybody, because this is the type of movie where people will come away with different ideas as to what is really going on, or what has just happened. There is a final scene where something is supposed to happen, and as it came from the point-of-view from a different character, I believe it happened. What the meaning of the happening is, I'm still pondering over.
Excellent acting by the whole cast, including Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, Andrea Riseborough, and Edward Norton. But make no mistake, this is Keaton's show all the way and he is super. I'm glad he was nominated for Best Actor because he deserved the accolade. Very good, "beyond-the-norm" movie that is very pleasing to see, enjoy, and think about.

- This movie is so good that I cannot believe that it's not already an instant-classic for horror. Tenseful, atmospheric and with an amazing mood this flick must be in my Top 3 of the decade so far. Super 8 muder scenes are extremely well made, the storyline and all the details are astounding and the performance from Ethan Hawke and James Ransone are great. As a fan of these kinds of movies I cannot demand more than that because this is the perfect flick for my taste. Double thumbs up and that ending is truly epic. Masterpiece.

The Lion in Winter (1968) - Anthony Harvey
This has an excellent cast, a great script and is well directed .... but I just didn't enjoy it :( I think the fact that it was written as a play, which meant that the script was very dense and there weren't a lot of quiet moments, affected my enjoyment - it felt somewhat overbearing. Add to that the fact that all of the characters are unpleasant and I was just left feeling like it was a difficult watch. I know there are people that think this is great, and I certainly can't argue with them, but it didn't work for me unfortunately.

Brothers (2009) - Jim Sheridan
A guy just released from prison (Gyllenhaal) looks after his sister in law (Portman) and family while his brother (Maguire) is in Afghanistan. It's a bit of a mess this film but by the end its good points outweigh its bad points somewhat. I'm not a fan of Maguire and he was terrible in the scenes before he goes to Afghanistan - absolutely no chemistry with anyone else on screen - but in the more dramatic scenes later in the film he was great. Portman is generally a good actress but she seems like someone who really struggles with bad scripts (just watch 30 seconds of any of her Star Wars performances) and whilst this wasn't a bad script as such, parts of it weren't great so she wasn't either. Gyllenhaal was mostly pretty good as his natural charisma allows him to still be watchable in scenes that other actors may struggle with. The story is really interesting and the direction is good and I think it would have been great without a few acting and script (the father character was really one-dimensional and annoying) problems but overall I enjoyed it.

Interesting, I may look him up. Is his stuff hard to track down?
I would say to start with his records... I have them, and recorded them on to mp3 if you'd like them. I got into standup at 18, heard about Mort Sahl at 19, took me years to fully understand the act. You have to really know what's going on in the 50s, 60's - present to understand, and he's all improvisational, stream-of-consciousness, free associative, imaginative satire. Very anti-authoritative, non-conformist, cerebral...
He's also a HUGE film fan!
He still performs in an intimate small room in SF. You can go to his twitter page - www.twitter.com/mortsahlsays at 10pm ET every Thursday. All you need is the free app (Periscope) and you can see it. I actually record it to my computer, as it's the place I saw him live twice.
Here's a cool interview - https://www.popuparchive.com/collections/938/items/22247
2 minutes of standup - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5Gd119MI5Y
I highly recommend checking out his interviews, text or audio.. The guy is my hero, I had to meet him.
P.S. - I saw that comedy documentary.. The narrator mentions him as the pioneer of standup comedy, and we see some video (muted audio), and there is a clip of Bill Hicks (only a 2 second video clip with no audio).

Having Wonderful Time (1938)
Ginger Rogers is beautiful and funny in this light romantic comedy. She works in a typing pool in New York and gets a vacation to a camp in the Catskills of New York. There, she meets a young waiter, played by Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (just one year from Gunga Din) and of course they meet cute, and then struggle with their attraction for the entire film. This is not a classic cinematic venture by any means, just good, clean fluff, but it's never boring. Ginger and Douglas are helped throughout the picture by a young Lucille Ball, Red Skelton (in his first movie), Eve Arden, Donald Meek, and Jack Carson. Nice little time filler, and a good one for me to ogle Ginger, as she was a knockout in her youth.

Far From the Madding Crowd (2015) - Thomas Vinterberg
I didn't go into this with high expectations (I don't always enjoy British costume dramas) but I really enjoyed it. Carey Mulligan is great, which comes as no surprise as she is one of the best actresses of her generation, but what really makes this work is that the three actors playing opposite her are also very good and all three relationships work very well. Overall Vinterberg's output has been a bit up and down with a couple of masterpieces mixed with some mediocrity but this is one of his better films IMO.

L'Argent 4-
Bresson's bleak final statment on humanity asserts that society is the root of all evil. Yes sir, this capitalistic society of ours was doomed from the start, forming a perpetual never-ending cycle of crime and murder. Evil stems not from the soul, but from the corrupted mind. Corrupted by money and the capitalistic pursuit of wealth. Bresson's worldview is harsh and unflinching, refusing to sprinkle any sense of hope in his final film. The message heard clearly; the final scene in his career echoes the sentiment that the cycle has no end. The heads of men lean forth, pondering what went wrong with Yvon. A strong end to Bresson's film career.

The Admiral: Roaring Currents (Korean) 4.5++ A Truly Epic Film. And I hate to use "Epic" but that is EXACTLY what this move is. Telling the great tale of Admiral Yi facing off the Japanese Fleet to protect Korea. With the same gentleman who played Oldboy and a director who has already proven the ability to do a large scale battle movie in War of the Arrows, this is an incredible ride. ESPECIALLY the naval battle at the end.

The Long Voyage Home 3.5
Solid film from Ford, as I expected, although it doesn't quite excel in every area. The major strengths of this film are Ford's mastery with the camera and his humanistic depiction of human-beings. His films show the indomitable strength of the human spirit, but also the power of communities. Greg Toland's work as cinematographer is breathtaking; the opening sequence of the film has to be seen to believed. The final act of the film subverts expectations and delivers one of the more melancholic endings i've yet seen in a Ford film. The film certainly ended on a high note, the final image is quite haunting.
Thematically the film didn't do much for me, and I must admit the film did drag. The biggest problem for me though was the out of place humor. Ford can be a funny guy, but sometimes his humor just doesn't land. I think The Searchers is a terrific film, but the humor in that film was cringeworthy. I think that problem plagues this film as well, at least to me.
Overall, this is a solid entry in Ford's canon. Not his greatest film by any stretch of the imagination, but still a worthy one. Maybe my expectations were too high, considering the man made some of cinema's greatest masterpieces in films like How Green Was My Valley.

This is the first Ozu film I've seen that feature children in the story. I wasn't crazy about that aspect, and I much preferred the subplot, not that it wasn't done well, because it was. It's a good slice of life, but I didn't think it was as emotionally powerful as the other movies I've seen from this director.

Gran Torino (2008)
Clint Eastwood plays pretty much the coolest old guy ever. The development of the relationship between Walt Kowalski and the Hmong family was very well-done. This movie made me laugh more than a lot of comedies, Kowalski's witty, profanity-laden dialogue is hilarious. Even though the ending is pretty sad, the movie still found ways to make you laugh all the way to the end. Definitely worth a watch!

Highlander (1986)
Wow, quite the watch! In my opinion this was a wacky masterpiece. The acting, direction, fighting, dialogue, and many other things were quite "out there" but it was all pretty awesome in a way. The plot is definitely the best thing to me. It really isn't surprising that this spawned so many sequels and spin-offs. The opening scene (sword-fight in the MSG parking garage) is probably one of my favorite opening scenes in a film. Funny (unintentionally at some points) and epic.

My intro to Naruse left me very impressed. The movie packs an emotional punch, especially with it's ending. The film is quite heavy, full of powerful emotions, but I wouldn't call it melodramatic. Everything is conveyed through the little subtleties, especially facial glances. It's funny at times as well, giving some levity to the whole picture. The photography was magnificent as well. Can't wait to see more from Naruse in the future.

I watched two Naruse films last week (Late Chrysanthemums and When a Woman Ascends the Stairs) and thought they were both excellent. Similar thoughts, really great emotional dramas, but I liked the subtle human touches and sprinkles of comedy that made them feel real. Got Floating Clouds recorded too, then I'll check out some others eventually.

24 Hour Party People (2002) - Michael Winterbottom
A film about the Manchester music scene from the late seventies through to the early nineties. This is a movie made in a unique way - it is kind of a mockumentary except that most of it depicts real events and it often mixes in real footage. All of the characters are played by actors though - although many of the real people depicted are actually in the film in other roles - and there are some scenes that are purely fictional but the characters actually point out when that is the case. The way it was made was very effective and the music is amazing. The only negatives are that I felt it was a bit too much about Steve Coogan's character (basically the guy that discovered Joy Division and Happy Mondays) and not enough about the musicians themselves, and there were quite a few versions of well known songs that I wanted to hear more of but they kept getting cut short - such as New Order's Blue Monday and Happy Mondays' Kinky Afro. Anyway, Steve Coogan is great and it's a really fun film if you like that music.

Fairly formulaic British film about a Scottish shipbuilder who loses his job and decides to swim the English Channel. He is of course helped out by a collection of quirky characters. There is nothing particularly wrong with this but it is very predictable and quite sentimental. Basically you get what you pay for and for what it is it's reasonably well done.

Last days of the Third Reich. One of those movies that seems to be so famous for that one scene, kinda like 'Here's Johnny' in The Shining- where Adolf throws a tantrum and spawns billions of youtube parodies. Although like The Shining, that "one scene" became an afterthought. Quite morbid story focusing on Traudl Junge, der führer's secretary, and the inner-circle in the Berlin bunker. Final days of the most spellbinding time in history. Alright, that Adolf tantrum is pretty good

The Plough And The Stars 3.5+
Underrated film from Ford. I'm genuinely surprised it doesn't have a bigger following amongst film enthusiasts. Sumptuous aesthetics, thrilling action sequences, and a powerful statement against war round out a film that comes close to being great. The first act of the film does meander, but the gaze does sharpen, as the film heads towards a powerful conclusion.

The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)
Nice, near-classic adventure about an Englishman (Ronald Colman) on holiday in a foreign country who is noticed to be almost a dead-ringer for the soon-to-be crowned king (also played by Ronald Colman). Through discussion, they find they are distant cousins and the Englishman, Rudolf, is invited for dinner at the castle. Also along are the soon-to-be king's friends and right-hand men, Colonel Zapt (C. Aubrey Smith) and Fritz (David Niven). When all the men awaken in the morning, it is discovered that the king-to-be is passed out, having been poisoned by the last wine that only he drank from. He is taken to a cell for safe-keeping and tending-to until his men can figure out what to do. The coronation is right around the corner, so what to do, what to do? Yes, of course they ask Rudolf to pose as the king during the coronation and the following celebrations to keep the country together. It's no spoiler to say that his brother MIchael (Raymond Massey), and Michael's aide, Rupert (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) are the ones who conspired to have the new king poisoned, thinking he would die. When they see the king apparently no worse for the wear, they are confused but suspicious. To say that they muck things up is an understatement.
There is intrigue, romance, a bit of gunplay, and of course, requisite for movies of this type, a swordfight. Colman is excellent in his duel role; C. Aubrey Smith is smashing and very regal as the Colonel; David Niven provides humor, mainly through his worried and exasperated looks; Fairbanks is slimy, smiling evil; Massey is good but his role is rather small, spread across the length of the movie is small scenes; Madeleine Carroll is beautiful and quietly fine as the princess who falls for the imposter king; Mary Astor is good as the woman who loves Massey though he is slime. This is grand fun and well worth your time.

Completely bonkers in an almost Pythonesque way, which is what I like about it. Not every joke is a hit, a few things made me cringe, but all in all it's a pretty funny spoof and has a fairly endearing cult feel to it. The early 80s hair and costumes are spot on. And the talking can of vegetables was a highlight.
I started watching the Netflix series straight after which is a prequel to this. So far it's not as good as the movie, but I'm giving it a chance as I heard that it gets better.

A Pretty simple Sci-Fi drama with a lot of cliches, the performances were okay, not terrible or anything. I gotta say though Natalie Martinez has been catching my attention and has been impressing me lately and she easily had the best performance in this movie over Reynolds. Ben Kingsley I like but he seriously looked like he was reading from cue cards off to the side or something in this movie, barely held eye contact with any of the characters he interacts with. It just seemed like he has been mailing in so many performances lately and it is just sad.

Netflix had a behind the scenes doc. It was better than the movie and the show.
I plan to watch this too when I'm done with the series.

Fort Apache 4-
Probably the best Ford I've seen so far this week. It's generally great in every category of filmmaking, but it's the themes that really make this film great. The ending really reminded me of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, due to the idea that legend precedes actual truth. Sometimes one has to lie in order to preserve the dignity of others. I did think the Philadelphia subplot was rather superfluous in the grand scheme of things. I was bored during some sections, but that's a rather minor qualm. I think I'll like this one even more when revisiting it in the future.

Playtime (1967)
This looks great, and some parts raised a smile, but it wasn't exactly the life-changing experience the glowing reviews in the 60s thread suggested. This film reminded me of those picture books where you have to spot things, like Where's Wally/ Where's Waldo, with lots of different incidental details. The best part was the posters advertising all the different destinations, but all have the exact same grey building with the famous landmarks squeezed into the picture in the background. Two hours of it was a little wearing, however, and I just don't think I got all the jokes.
A tentative 3

I Lived, But ... (1983) - Kazuo Inoue
Fantastic documentary for anyone who appreciates Ozu. Really goes in depth into his life and his writing and movie making processes and includes short interviews with many Ozu regulars like Chishu Ryu and Haruko Sugimura. Many of the insights are quite fascinating including the fact that his scripts didn't just include lines to be read - they explained how they were to be read ... word by word. Also stories of him spending half a day rearranging bowls on a table to get his shot to look just right or moving a painting a quarter of an inch over and over between shots until it was perfect. The documentary shows what made him such a great director ... But also why he died relatively young sadly. Only negative was no Setsuko Hara but that wasn't the directors fault.

Summer Clouds (1958) - Mikio Naruse
Naruse's first colour film is quite a meandering affair - in fact at times it almost meandered too much but thankfully the good cast, including Chikage Awashima and Haruko Sigumura, were able to get it back on track. It covers pretty standard themes for the time, changing families against the backdrop of a changing society, and whilst it does a good job I thought it was perhaps slightly on the weaker side of Naruse's filmography. Still worth seeing though.

Calcutta (1969) - Louis Malle
This was my 9th Malle film and the first of his documentaries I think. I've generally enjoyed his films and that was the case here - although "enjoyed" is probably not quite the right word. This is a documentary, as the name would suggest, about Calcutta (or Kolkata as it is now known) and it really shows a city of massive contrasts with much of the great British architecture still in place whilst many of the residents live in squalor. There is little in the way of narration so Malle gets his point across mostly with images. Some of it is quite hard to watch and I felt like a bit more narration could have given it more focus but overall it was quite interesting.

Hey guys, I'm back! Not that any of you remembers me probably, but yeah, I'm back.
Last two movies I have watched:
Turbo Kid, 2015, by Three Different Guys
Cool little movie which I would have adored if I was 10 (and my parents would have let me watch it, which they wouldn't have because of the huge amount of juicy gore it has). Don't take it as a flaw
though, I mean it in the best possible way! It's fun and has everything a kid would love. An over top evil evil guy, a clumsy hero, a funny girl with bright eyes, corny one liners, cool bikes,
cool gadgets that go PEW PEW and make people explode into pieces. The female main character would have probably been my first crush (ok, maybe after the Empress in the Neverending Story).
There is also a truly, truly beautiful shot in which our two heroes romantically interact under a bloody rain.
The story level is "story? HA!", being just a generic Mad Max-like post apocalyptic wasteland, but who cares. Again, a cool, cool little movie.
6.5/10
Midnight in Paris, 2001, Woody Allen
Woody, Woody. Movies with rich people being rich and jerking off at how much they know about art and literature and life in general. And still, I love (most of ) his movies. I guess it's the great,
delicate way in which he treats his characters. This movie even managed to make me like Owen Wilson! I only wish that the last sequence, the talk in the rain, would have lasted longer. It
had soooo much potential! God it reminded me of the absolutely perfect endings of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Blah. But I guess Allen made it that way to compensate for how super talkative all the characters are throughout the rest of the movie. I wish I knew more about
art and literature though, I think I would have appreciated this movie even more. I really liked the way Hemingway was portrayed, but who knows if it was truthful!
7.5/10

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence - 3
Well, I didn't hate it. Like its predecessor, it's going to take a while to process. I am unsure whether or not the deliberate blending of CG animation and line-drawing animation works all that well in the film's favour.

Event Horizon, Paul WS Anderson, 1997
Uuuugh, so much potential!! Ok, the movie was uber cut down by the studio. Ok, production was super rushed. But still, it could have been so much better. It's the usual impression I get from Anderson, lots of effort but the results are subpar. I also kinda blame the actors in this one, they seemed to have put no effort at all in this movie.
The story is very interesting, with this awesomely designed spaceship which opens a portal to another dimension while trying to beat the speed of light, and as we know nobody travels to another dimension without bringing back problems from it. In this case, the problem is visions of dead people.
Again, great potential, but all it does is give an insight on how Sunshine could have turned out if hadn't been directed by Boyle.
I read that Anderson gave up the chance to direct Alien 3 to do this movie, so he really believed in it. Oh well, at least he got to direct AVP several years later, which at least...well, sucks way less than AVP 2.
5/10.

Scream (1996) - Wes Craven
http://imagescine.critictoo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Scream10.jpg
- Astounding piece of cinema. Definitely one of the best slasher of all-time with some creepy and hilarious moments. Probably my favorite rewatch since 3 months and the whole cast is great I mean I enjoy every character in this movie. The direction is great (It's Wes Craven after all...). I like the fact that they quote many horror movie and they ridiculize some cliche horror and sequels. The ending is also one of my favorite simply because it's funny as hell. Matthew Lillard as Stu is at the top of his game and it's my favorite character because he's completely hilarious. Great movie.

The Imitation Game
Took me a while to watch this movie from start to finish, I always watched segments but never fully through. What a great movie this is, after it finished I sat down and thought what would have happened if Alan Turing never invented his machine to break the Enigma. We may have ended up as a communist world run by Hitler, it also amazes me that it had been kept a secret for 50 years! Benedict was great as Alan Turing and I didn't mind Keira Knightly either, sporting cast was well put together as well. I really think this or Whiplash should have won best picture, Birdman was ok but I forgot about it a week or so after I watched it.

Great movie to be honest, it get's even better if you are a fan. I knew a lot of this but only in stories ofc, watching it happen is something totally different. Acting was very good, a lot better than what I thought. Dialog is good, gets a little bit weaker near the end, but nothing major. Story is strongest during middle of the movie, parts during and little bit after tour. It's just well made movie even if you don't listen to their music. I enjoyed it a lot.
Verdict: 8.5/10
Exam:
http://i.simplecd.me/OQeedMAa.jpg
This movie has wonderful beginning, full of mystery, drama, thriller, decant acting and pace...But it falls apart really fast, drama becomes so freaking bad, its like those tv shows, where a girl is actually her own mother while her brother is actually her grandfather who died as her son... Yea, that kind of drama. Plot becomes so unrealistic and idiotic, dialog becomes laughable... And ending...Just horrible. So overall, good start, but everything falls apart.
