I'll agree with the Downsizing criticism. It was a cool premise that would have been good for a Black Mirror episode or something. As a 2+ hour long movie, it was boring.

This film knocks my socks off!! Candace Hilligloss just amazing and a genuinely creepy movie....that organ, that dancing!!! I recorded it from Film 4 on a whim (UK) and I's so glad I did. Did ye ken that the "ghost" seen at the window was the director Spookie?

I never knew that @Marco (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=95220). Candace put in a believable performance. Yes a genuinely creepy movie that has stood the test of time. Will future generations remember many of todays so called creepy movies with their over the top jump scares and ridiculous plots?

She did indeed....I thought Candace was classy and elegant as the troubled organist ;) To answer your question spookiemoviemania, i really dunno...we require more inventiveness so that the future generations can taste the scare...maybe some of the Portmanteau collections that shivverred the bones?

Re-watch. 17 years later, it’s still an amusing movie. I thought the sequel was atrocious & can only imagine the 3rd movie. Did she ever nail one of those two?

46175

Re-watch. Flat. Never took off. Sally Field was so pretty.

46176

I thought this was rather good. Haven’t read this particular book of Du Maurier’s. Maybe better as a TV movie. Rachel Weisz & Sam Claflin very good.

It definitely lived up to the hype. I thought some of the characters acted a little odd at times in the first half, but besides that I thought it was great. I usually only get teary eyed from love stories but I couldn't help myself watching some of these scenes, scenes I'll probably never forget. My wife doesn't usually watch these types of movies with me but she did and also thought it was great.

I barely remember Kiss The Girls, but I do remember this one. Absolutely horrible opening sequence with the terrible CGI car crash. Almost put me off the film right from the start.

Memorable villain, mainly because I really like Michael Wincott with his smokers voice. The whole production screams late 90's early 2000's generic thriller and I feel like it stays that way.

Also, the fact this cost around $60 million dollars, blows my mind.

I love Michael Wincott as well :D.

In the valley of Elah (2007)

Another terrific performance by tommy lee jones following no country for old men. His face has so much character.

This ones about a ex military father searching for his missing military son (in America). Although there’s visible horror and drama I would say the portrayal of the soldiers and the effects of war, in particular Iraq are more subtle than hammered home. You feel for both the victims and the perpetrators and it presents complex characters, ones which are not wholly good or evil/bad. Again I feel the broader lesson is the horror of war rather than any singular character although it just really scraps the surface by focusing on a singular tale - which is the missing soldier. But this effectively makes you think.

Really worth watching if you like the mystery detective type genre. Also a great performance by the strong Charlize Theron as budding detective.

It's Russian (or Soviet actually). I didn't like it as much as cricket but I'd still say it's worth a watch. Too much propaganda (like the demonization of Germans) ate some of its strength away but it certainly has its moments.

I am on a bit of a survival film kick at the moment. One of the best most compelling I have seen recently is Unbroken.. the wartime exploits of American Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini. He, along with two USAF airmen spent a record number of days drifting in the ocean after ditching their stricken plane. Surviving that alone was a miracle. But what followed tears at the heart strings..his treatment at the hands of the brutal Japanese in a POW camp in Japan. The man was signaled out by a sadistic officer for some of the most savage treatment short of death.. all because he vanquished the same Japanese officer in a race at the Olympics. Call it pay back time as the Orientals despise losing face.. specially to men who surrender. Dishonorable. Unbroken boasts excellent acting, a rivetting storyline and superb cinematography. rating_4

2017 Murder On the Orient Express
3 out of 5.

I just saw this today, and perhaps I'm at a handicap, because I' m measuring it against the 1974 version. I'd probably bump this one up to a 3.5 if I'd never seen the earlier film; just b/c I 'm such a fan of these type of murder mysteries, and have (at one point) read every book Dame Agatha had ever written.

But for me. this version AND the so called uber actors PALED next to the original; and the unforgettable, almost stage like, on screen personas of people like Lauren Bacall,
Sean Connery, John Geilgud, Tony Perkins, etc. These were actors who knew how to command the screen. And were a delight to watch.

Johnny Depp, so often lauded as an actor who can disappear into a part - just seemed to disappear off the screen. Michelle Pfeiffer and William Dafoe had more impact, but never seemed to make me have any involvement with their character
( though I've surely enjoyed the magnetism of both of them in other films) Old timer Judi Dench was the only one who - for me - had a real presence.

The only thing I could say was superior in this version was the photography- . using all the skills of modern techniques, I think visually - the churning train wheels, the snow bound mountains, etc. - all of that was of very good quality.

But as I too often find in contemporary movies, something in the pacing or editing or over extended plot lines, or character development- something is lackluster. And lacking. The movie just started sagging for me about 2/3 through and I was just hoping they would 'get on with it.' .

Whereas the 1974 movie is one I could see over and over again, and relish the 'ride' even knowing the ending.

Btw-(semi spoiler ahead) - the one redeeming thing in the movie was that there was a sort of 'twist ' to the ending in this version from the '74 ending. A confession. Or two . A played out drama upon Poirot and a clever ploy by Poirot as a test of character.

But this sort of changed Poirot's character as well, making him more sentimental and human; but then- not the fussy, meticulous, annoying but brilliant sleuth that Christie created. I also, for no reason I can state, found the plot line and conspiracy harder to believe in this movie - whereas in the 74 version I didn't have any qualm about 'suspending disbelief,'

Still it is a well crafted AC mystery, studded with stars of this day, wandering over exotic foreign terrain; and probably more to be enjoyed by those unfamiliar with the 74 (and other) version(s). For me, the earlier film remains a mystery classic, and the one I would watch again.

First time seen you on this thread LL. I watched this about a month ago. Is imho the best of all versions of this iconic Christie mystery. Yes the 1974 version had a great group of character actors in the major supporting roles but was spoilt big time by the caricature portrayal of Poirot by Albert Finney. I still shudder at his performance.

Move over Black Panther because Marvel has managed to release a super hero film that is....

actually worse than Black Panther. No really I was worried that by years end Black Panther would have been the worst super hero movie of the year thankfully Ant-man and the Wasp showed up.

With that said both films are good, though Ant-man and the Wasp suffers from DC-itis. DC-itis is when you cast a dozen named actors and cram them into your movie so your story can't make any organic turns or do interesting things. Seriously this film has 14 characters and everyone is given a "moment" by the end of the film I was given a horrible sense of the could-a-beens.

This could have been a great 10-part miniseries on HBO, an attempt at a genre shift where you are making a 50's science fiction movie. Ghost is the antagonist with phasing powers and an interesting backstory and personality could have been great to see the story play out. Hank Pym and Bill Foster have a scientific and political rivalry that could have been a really good film. And I'll say this, the Michael Douglas storyline and character were much more engaging this time around. This could have been a hell of great adventure story with the crew going into the microverse to find Janet Van Dyne but what we got was typical CGI boredom.

And while I have gripes....I will admit it's a decent film. There is nothing wrong with what we got, we do see these glimmers of cool stuff that's packed into a decent comedy. I believe I liked this more than the first one because of the improvements to Douglas's character and Randal Park's Jimmy Woo. Woo is the Shield agent in-charge of watching Lang and Park and Rudd have the best chemistry in the film.

He really made me laugh in The Count of Monte Cristo, where he plays the warden of the Chateau d'If, Dorleac. In a pivotal sequence he's walking up the spiral stairs saying "I'm so bored ". I like that because he's camping it up in a completely different way to Guy Pearce, who's far too scenery-chewing for my taste.

JAGGED EDGE: (1985)

Overdosing on Perry Mason growing up kinda turned me off court room dramas. So I was not expecting to be entertained when I sat down to watch Jagged Edge last nite. I am glad I did as it is a crackerjack psycho thriller. The underlying themes running thru the film are; did rich, suave playboy newspaper publisher Jack Forrester (Jeff Bridges) savagely murder his wife. And can hot shot lawyer Teddy Barnes (Glenn Close) save him from the electric chair. Once the trial begins it everything points to Forrester being guilty. He has had (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=10846&page=2264) a string of marital affairs..his wife holds the purse strings and she is also being unfaithful. Sub plots that are integral to Jagged Edge are the anonymous notes Barnes is receiving written on a Corona 42 typerwriter that clearly are steering the blame away from Forrester.. The tension between Barnes and her former DA colleague Tom Krazny (Peter Coyote) over a previous case.. Crusty former DA friend/turned PI Sam Ransom (Robert Loggia) joining the Barnes team. Clouding the whole messy trial is the affair beween Barnes and Forrester. All of this makes for compelling viewing as the evidence is deciphered and a conclusion is reached. Is Jack Forrester innocent or not? rating_4

Yearning (1964) by Mikio Naruse

HOLY. It's difficult to talk about a film like this, where everything you think to say feels like an oversimplification. A young man keeps his love for his widowed sister-in-law close to his chest due. She feels emotionally frozen, incapable of understanding herself in relation to the world around her and the man in front of her. His volatile modernness and her frightened rigidity butt heads just after a seemingly platonic but intensely romantic train courtship unlike any other romance scene in a train you've ever seen. The following morning when Naruse cuts all diegetic sounds abruptly and swells the music for the climactic moment, what I expected to feel like cheap sentimentality hit like a brick wall of euphoria and tragedy.

Sicario 2

Average. Few too many of those coincidence type story moments - can’t stand that kind of plot direction/writing which is apparent in the new stars wars movies (recent example). Didn’t feel the dread of Mexico like in the first. The oozing charisma of both Brolin and Del Toro could have been magnified. The music was decent - very similar in tone to the first.

Not a movie I would watch again. Not a movie that needed to be made.

The Equalizer (2014)
2.5
Watched this for the first time in preparation for the sequel (and see if it would be worth going to). Short answer...it won't be worth going to the movie this weekend. I seldom watch action type movies like this, but this one still felt rather stale in execution. Denzel plays some one-of-a-kind badass (at age 60 irl, mind you) that everyone underestimates since he doesn't appear to do anything legitimately "cool" in his spare time like working at Home Depot and reading books.

He gets wrapped up in a prostitution syndicate because he feels like this one girl needs saving, and he proceeds to take down the entire organization inexplicably. There were many times which really left you in the dark on how exactly he killed so many people without a single person ever getting the upper hand and taking him out. Denzel carries the movie with his intense acting, but the movie is otherwise forgettable.

The major problem with this film imo it's the terrible camerawork and fast edit. I'm not paying for an action movie that doesn't even show the action.

Final Rating: A

The film may look like a typical alien invasion film, set in a small town in Australia, but the ensemble cast brings an emotional range as they deal with the tribulations of a literal war against the aliens who have invaded. I was given the opportunity to interview Dan Ewing (https://worldfilmgeek.com/2018/07/18/stopping-the-occupation-an-interview-with-lead-actor-dan-ewing/), who plays rugby captain turned survivor and warrior Matt. (Trivia: Ewing is a former Power Ranger, playing Black Ranger Dillon in 2009's Power Rangers RPM, his first major role...awesome and nice guy BTW)

Great still shot, Fab! The acting from Jon Voight and Maximilian Schell was first rate, as was the technical stuff. The film doesn't hold up as well, nor does it pack the same punch as it did 44 years ago-- mostly due to the many imitations. But it still holds one's interest, and is a fine production.

Dante's Peak. A vulcanologist arrives in the small town of Dante's Peak, an idyllic community nestled at the foot of a long dormant volcano, and soon becomes convinced that the volcano is about to wake up in spectacular fashion. Pierce Brosnan and Terminator icon Linda Hamilton star in this late 90s disaster flick that was one of a variety of a mini-revivals of that genre in that period to take advantage of the then new CGI effects, though there's enough old fashioned movie craftsmanship in here that it now ironically feels very old school. I haven't seen this in nigh on 20 years and thoroughly enjoyed it! :)

This was a VERY cute film, a laugh-a-minute screwball comedy. It features the great Charles Coburn in an unusual off-beat, quirky comedic role-- much different from what he usually plays; and he really brings it off!

The teasing build up to the love and kissing of the Jean Arthur and Joel McCrea characters was a little drawn out, but that was common in the '40s & '50s. Yet it's a very satisfying flick.

It was first rate directing by George Stevens, prior to his changing the type of material he used.

I prefer it to the 1966 remake, Walk, Don't Run, with Cary Grant, Samantha Eggar and Jim Hutton.

It is rare to have a heart warming theme running thru a war film. Into The White, based on actual events, is one such film.

At the beginning of World War II a hostile encounter in the skies above the Norwegian wilderness leaves two aircraft - one British, one German - shot down in a remote and isolated region. Survivors from both planes find a small hut almost at the same time. What follows is two bitter enemies gradually putting aside the brutal rules of war in order to survive. rating_4

There are two films in "The Stranger" - The inconsistent drama that doesn't look that was shot by Visconti, with bad use of zoom, bad acting by Marcello Mastroianni, and a boring plot, then there is the last 40 minutes with Visconti's hability as a director all around, good use of zoom and a good Marcello Mastroianni acting. Very strange, indeed... The ending is great, that conversation with the priest was powerful.

A great film of its time with powerhouse performances. I think its about dis-affection for reasons why you support something. Christians' as he starts out so rapt believing in the goodness of the reich and its ways but realises that in practice they fall well short of his beliefs. Noah is quiet and effective who takes war as a fact and bullying as part and parcel of his life, resist how he may. Great performances from Brando, the beautiful Montgomery Clift with Deano showing good support. 8/10.

That guy molesting a child was hard to see, I really hate this kind of person (monsters), it looked a bit real the way putted his hand on her, his desire looked real. Then, we have that 'incest' scene, disgusting, repulsive, I thing I was too focused in the movie that everything felt real. Monster Hunt wasn't as bad as I expected. The special-effects definitely lacked polish in some respects, on one-hand, while they appropriately added shadows and it actually looked like they were actually standing where they were at, certain other details like how the monsters never tracked dirt during fights stood out to me. The story was cheesy and cliche, but it also had a certain absurdity and charming innocence I think is worth singling out.

I have begun my re-watch binge of the Godfathers. I was only able to get to the first one last night as it's almost 3 hours. I'm gonna be getting to Part 2 and 3 today. I just wanna state right off the bat that these are not my favorite gangster films, but they are by no means bad at all. Marlon Brando is fantastic. Pacino, Caan, Duvall and the rest are great as well, but I will admit the horse head scene makes no logical sense and I've never liked it. These films have always been a romanticized Hollywood version of gangsters, making them out to be men of honor when in reality these kind of real life gangsters were very few and far between.

THE MISSION: (1986)

Found myself engrossed in this historical true story of a Jesuit priest and his vision to open a mission for the Indians in a South American rain forest in the 18th Century. The breathtaking cinematography by Chris Menges won both an Oscar plus a Palme d'Or award. Powerful performances from Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons are complimented by the mesmerizing Ennio Morricone soundtrack. [rating]4]/rating]

ICE COLD IN ALEX: (1958)

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/916HyEFMllL._SY445_.jpg

I so admire this John Mills-powered Brit war film. What it lacks in action it makes up for with intrigue. Tells the tale of a RASC ambulance unit that is forced to evacuate a German Afrika Corp- beseiged Tobruk for Alexandria, Egypt. On the long journey they have to maneuver thru a minefield, stave off enemy attacks by air and land and brave the fierce heat of the desert in a vehicle that has seen better days.. On their way they pick up a Dutch Army hitch hiker who is not what he appears. This superbly told war drama held me enthralled from start to the last compelling scene.. like it has done umpteen times before. A superb cast, cinematography and an uplifting score. It surely is a classic. I am tempted to give Ice Cold In Alex top points. So I will rating_5

Below is the real meaning of the film's title. A cold beer in Alexandria.

I won't say the movie hasn't got tense moments, but two or three scenes can't win all the movie, which lasts 132 minutes. Mark Wahlberg's acting is wooden. Owen Wilson from the post above, at least has some kind of charm. Great role of Christopher Plummer, but contrarily to Wahlberg, he is awesome in every movie.

Molly's Game (2017) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4209788/)

Loved it, and usually I'm not impressed with new movies these days. This one caught my attention at the get-go and held it until the film was over. Well made, loved the first person narrative voice over style, which made the film feel like a personal story. It's a wild story based on the real events as told by Molly Bloom.

rating_4+
I too enjoyed it. Here is my mini-review:

Took a chance last night on Molly's Game, and was pleasantly surprised. The real story of Molly Bloom, a prior Olympic skier turned high stakes poker game hostess/banker, must have been a screen writer's dream. And in fact it did get an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.

Jessica Chastain did a journeyman's job of portraying Brown, although in real life Brown is actually better looking and has a more affable and engaging personality than does the character in the film. Kevin Costner turned in a nice performance of Molly's father. There were good parts for veterans Bill Camp and Chris O'Dowd. The character of Molly's attorney (in real life Michael Walden) was given to Idris Elba, evidently to satisfy the unwritten rigid Hollywood racial quota system. Elba had a decent performance, but the role seemed unevenly written.

Writer/Director Aaron Sorkin knows how to write an engaging but commercial screenplay. All in all the film is an enjoyable watch. And it's as least as compelling as half the other pictures that were nominated this year for major awards.

This US/OZ co production is a prime example of a film showing so much early promise then losing its way. One could say the gratuitous violence and gore is a little over the top. Silly things like a dead crew member returning to life left me a touch bemused. Still the many subtle scares do chill the bone sufficiently to keep you attentive. This is pretty much my kind of movie or else I don't think I would have liked it at all. It's very slow, but it's not slow with great dialogue or advancements with the plot, it's stylistically slow. Everything that happens would have taken about 10 minutes in an average movie. Joaquin Phoenix was great as usual but comparisons to Taxi Driver are forced. There were a couple of things that didn't seem to make sense. I'm probably overrating it.

Personally I like the 1st one of the best out of these three, but I think Part 2 is really good. My main gripe with this one is I wanted to see MORE of Vito's rise to power and less of Michael's day to day dealings. De Niro was my favorite part of this film and I love his last few scenes when he returns to Italy for obvious reasons.

The Godfather: Part 3 (1990) 3

I liked the concept of Michael trying to finally take the family business legit, but my least favorite part was all the overacting and I feel like they just didn't execute it that great. Especially in one of the final scenes I think you guys know what I mean. Also come on they couldn't pay Duvall a few more million to appear as Hagen again? That character was always great opposite Michael in the first two films. That aspect is lacking greatly in this one. I do think Andy Garcia was great despite the controversy that surrounded his casting.

I had a feeling that might have been it, but he could easily as Italian, and yes, did a fine job. Winona Ryder had to back out as well, and if they weren't so cheap, with Robert Duvall, it could have been a little better. Who knows, they might have changed a few things to give them more story, since George Hamilton had no character.

Isle of Dogs (2018) - 72/100

It's got what you'd expect from Wes Anderson; great visuals, a couple od good laughs, and a pleasantly half-cartoonish half-realistic feel. The problem is it's not half as clever, fleshed out or subtle as Fantastic Mr. Fox (which I still hold up as the best animated film of all time). The theme of propaganda feels like an afterthought, every single character is a cardboard cutout, and there's generally no emotional involvement. Though, from a purely technical perspective, Isle of Dogs is amazing. As I said, the set and character design is brilliant, the animation itself does it justice, and there's some great music, VA and comedic timing.

TL;DR it's very well crafted but it should've been better written.

I still wish Wes Anderson would continue making animated films. I just like the look of stopmotion.

In a small town in 18th century Japan, the residents are mostly poor, and mixed in with with a few gangsters, wealthy, and samurai. There's a pretty decent plot, but for a movie that's less than an hour and a half long, it seemed like it took a while to get going. I had trouble for a bit grasping the different characters and dynamics, and because of that I think I would like it more with a second viewing. It's a pretty good movie, but at least for this watch, I wanted more.

X... the Unknown (1956)
Enjoyable "B" British horror/monster movie from the '50s. The "being" pre-dates The Blob by two years, and was certainly influential in the McQueen vehicle.

It stars Dean Jagger, who turned in a creditable performance. This flick is not as silly as some of the other '50s films of this style, and there were actually some pretty suspenseful segments.

I love these "drive-in" type movies. They're good fun, not too scary, and entertain without repulsing the viewer. Do any posters actually remember drive-in theaters?..:D

I knew nothing about this going in except it was directed by Lewis Milestone, whose All Quiet on the Western Front and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers I also loved. I thought this was simple, heartfelt storytelling at it's best with the characters to match. The performances were spot on, even if they were somewhat stagy at times. Of all the times I've seen Burgess Meredith in a movie, this was the first time he wasn't ancient. My wife knew the story. She used to be one of them readers until I sold all her books. She also thought it was great.

I thought the first few films I saw from director Ozu were all good to great, but they were all so very similar. The last few I've seen have shown off his versatility. This is a very charming and easy to watch silent movie, that like most other Ozu movies I've seen, subtly tries to teach a lesson.

Never been able to finish this movie. Does everyone know Françoise Dorléac was Catherine Deneuve’s sister? No, I never knew that and I seen both together in The Young Girls of Rochefort (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062873/?ref_=ttmi_tt) (1967). I just read that Françoise Dorléac came to a tragic end at only 25.

HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE: (1964).

There were two films in the 60s which revived the career of Bette Davis. The first was Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. This was the second.. both were psychological thrillers. Bette was her usual hi quality while Olivia De Havilland put in one of her best performances. Agnes Moorehead stole the show winning a best support Golden Globe. Taking the director reins once again was Robert Aldrich.

This is a mysterious tale of a young women who is accused of the grisly murder of her former lover but is never convicted and must see out her days, hovering between sanity and insanity, in a crumbling southern mansion. The arrival of her cousin creates fears and suspicions that almost send the woman over the edge. What is the cousin's end play?

Cargo ~ 2017

So what is a good type movie to watch after sitting through a cheesy comedy? A Zombie flick of course. Have to suppress those giggles still eeking out from the comedy somehow. As far as Zombie stories go it holds up pretty well and other than a few cool minor details there really is nothing too original going on. What I like about Cargo is it never tries to be anything it is not, but simply a movie about a family trying to survive and protect their infant daughter and secure some type of safe future for her. I really enjoy movies with a limited cast (most times) and this certainly fits that guideline. There are those moments when you scratch your head and wonder why the characters do what they do and sometimes there is a good reason and sometimes there just isn't. Overall it is a very somber flick and it did make me think about what I would do in this situation.

I give this a decent rating of 3.5

I'm one who remembers drive-ins. In fact, for the first eighteen years of my life, it was the go-to way to see movies for my family and myself. We had a drive-in in our little small town, and sometimes we'd get the big releases several months late for whatever reason. But we didn't care, it was the main thing to do in town. And the nearest cinema was about twenty-five miles away, something my late Dad didn't want to make the trip for, as he worked twenty-five miles away in that same city. I didn't blame him. The drive-in was a magical place for us.

Same here dad. There was a drive in close to our cousin's place so when not actually driving to see the show we had a view of the full screen from their backyard.. minus sound of course.

I sure remember them too, DGB. It was inexpensive, you could take a carload, and if on a date, it was a perfect place to make out!. A lot of people brought their own food and/or booze, although the centralized concessions were always alluring.

The speakers didn't exactly provide high fidelity, but then if you were watching Creature from the Black Lagoon, or The Day the Earth Stood Still, who cared?!.;) And there was always a double (or triple) feature. There are still a select few around, but very rare. Too bad.

The Big Combo (1955)

Directed by Joseph H. Lewis (Gun Crazy), and with an impressive if eclectic cast featuring Cornel Wilde, Richard Conte, Brian Donlevy, Jean Wallace, Robert Middleton, LeeVan Cleef, Earl Holliman, and Helen Walker, this is a great example of later film noir.
In fact it could be said that John Alton’s excellent dark cinematography makes this one of the chief examples of noir.

The final scene with Wallace and Wilde in silhouette at a foggy airport must rank up there with classic noir frames, it’s impression as lasting as the iconic poster of Max Von Sydow standing outside the house in The Exorcist.

The plot, although with a nice twist, is rather tortured, and insures its “B” status, although it represents the highest level of that group. The dialogue is quirky, almost erratic, which tends to cover up the banality of the narrative.

Wilde does journeyman work with a role that is not given the chance to develop. But the character parts are the most alluring here. The ladies all sizzle off the screen. Helen Stanton as the stripper was a doll. Her career was too short. And this was Helen Walker's final film.

Earl Holliman shined as the inept henchman (the following year he was to appear in George Stevens' Giant), and of course Van Cleef was at his most intimidating. Brian Donlevy played against type in his role as an intimidated consigliare to Conte's "Mr. Brown".

The picture is definitely worth a watch, especially for its noir elements, and the excellent cast.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

I was interested in revisiting this film, prompted by a couple of discussions right here in mofo threads- about aliens, and about directors. Well Spielberg certainly tops the list for both categories. But I wondered, . could a movie made ~40 years ago stand up visually to the modern innovativions in cinematic techniques? And would I still enjoy, and be as enraptured, with the film as when I saw it years ago?

Well, the answer to the last question is: yes and no. Now you either like Spielberg or you don't - I do. I like movies that are a 'ride' - if I can lose myself in the experience of a well crafted journey through a film, that's all I need. I do like films that are artful, thought provoking or intellectual - but I also like a good strong movie, and don't look down my nose just because it's a commercial success that 'everyone' likes. And when it comes to movies on a grand operatic scale, that treats an encounter with space aliens as powerful a drama as if one is seeing Moses getting the 10 commandments - Spielberg's the go to guy.

So I was surprised it didn't ( quite ) hold up to my expectations. The biggest challenge for me was that movie seemed to move too slowly at the beginning. And seemed a little disjointed, as if presenting all the ' loose ends' that would be tied up later- as a puzzle , but the puzzle wasn't all that gripping in the first place.

It didn't really start out all that strongly for me , , and two of the main characters were not all that appealing - I was thinking of child protective services every time that mom lost her kid. And by the time Roy was playing with his mashed potatoes all I could think of was, watching this fool who was growing more and more irritating by the moment- man, I wish I had some mashed potatoes, I wonder if there's any left in the fridge.

And then - something happened. Right about the time Roy was starting to build a tower in his house, the drama AND the human connection kicked in.The director hit his stride. And it was a runaway ride and I could not take my eyes off the screen. . All that makes Spielberg great started for me at the moment Roy was throwing garbage through the window.
The humor- stealing chicken wire from the neighbor who was facing him off with a garden tool. The geese clucking and clattering away. The ( sad and truthful really) irony of neighbors watching their neighbor go mad in front of their eyes as if it was a reality show. The compassion for his wife, taking off with the kids in the car, with children who were still loyal innocents.

And then I was enraptured and swept along by all of it - the drama and the mystery and the adventure and the wonder and the awe. The dead cows and the live pigeons, the climbing up Devil's Tower, the unforgettable 5 note song that made connection with the aliens, the ship landing in realms of light, the returning pilots and the three year old boy, and the space creatures in the ephemeral light- it was all so wonderful and goose bumply moving. and it all seemed so real I could almost swear on the Bible that I saw it happen.

As far as my earlier first question- yes I think the power of the visuals not only hold up after 40+ years. but I think they are peerless! Magnificent!

I was also thinking that this was likely one of the director's first blockbusters. As he gained more time and experience, he created movies like E.T. which held your interest from the first to last second. Honing his craft, becoming more sophisticated as a director., he also deepened a connection with the audience, with a personal mark of the majority of his films- an appeal to the better nature of humanity, an almost spiritual belief in hope, and a happy ending. I think Spielberg as a film maker appeals to so many of us because he believes in the essential goodnress - against all odds- of humanity and the universe.

And some may find that a too easy, audience pleasing way to make a movie- but it works for me.

Totally agree with spookie, lenslady! Great review. My friends and I saw this in the cinema when it came out and we, having already experienced the rush of Star Wars the same year, went into this expecting something of the same type. But it was totally different, yet we were enthralled the whole way. The drama was riveting, the acceleration of the movie was so compelling and the majestic last third was beyond awe-inspiring. I don't remember how many times I saw it but I loved it. The concept of aliens being good guys was a switch---I know there were examples in the past like The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)---but I'm talking about the time of the release of CEotTK. We expected our aliens to be monsters or bad guys and Spielberg turned that notion on its ear and the movie was all the better for it.

Thanks for inspiring me to break out my DVD and watch it again real soon. BTW, do you prefer the original theatrical version or the "added scenes" version or the "ultimate last version" which had a mix of both the theatrical and "added scenes version?" My DVD has all three versions on it yet I prefer the original that I saw at the cinema. Just worked better for me. Anyway, again, great, moving review.

Hmm. It was not as simple as I thought it woud be. Bob Hoskins was really reliable. There is an interesting plot behind the sensational surface.

And some may find that a too easy, audience pleasing way to make a movie- but it works for me.
Very nice review, LL. I've watched it several times since its premiere, and my only gripe are the slower parts, especially the buildup while the characters are making replicas of the mesa. But the comedy, good acting, and the wonderment make it one of my favorites.

BTW, a friend of mine, Ian Underwood, was the keyboardist who recorded the D-E-C-C-G theme on synthesizer for the film.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)

https://images4.myreviewer.co.uk/small/0000211373.jpg

Great little film directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones. The titular character is accidentally killed by a Border Patrol Officer (the fine Barry Pepper). The rest of the film is a journey to return Melquiades' body to where he asked it to be laid at rest. A bit of a story of redemption too for the Border Cop, along the way they encounter some strange and wonderful people and places. Really liked this, well done TLJ, 8.5/10.

...I wondered, could a movie made ~40 years ago stand up visually to the modern innovativions in cinematic techniques? And would I still enjoy, and be as enraptured, with the film as when I saw it years ago?

Well, the answer to the last question is: yes and no... Excellent review Lenslady. I did the exact same thing about a year ago. I had seen Close Encounters at the theater and maybe once on TV but that was decades and decades ago. So what did I think of it? My review (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1663744#post1663744)

I also did a long needed rewatch of E.T. and I wasn't a fan of that one. But I do like Spielberg's movies in general.

Box set of Fanny & Alexander. A re-watch for me. Unusually for me, I preferred the 3 hours theatrical version rather than the 5 hours long tv version. Lots of interesting special features too.

Maybe didn’t enjoy it as much as the 1 or 2 times I have seen it before. Lots of static sets & noticeable wigs, which I never enjoy. (Which is why my theater days are long gone.) Second half is better than the 1st half IMO. Huge fan of Bergman so glad to own this beautiful Criterion set.

I wouldn't call this a great movie, but it was a great watch and is not even 70 minutes long. It's the perfect companion piece to Make Way for Tomorrow which I just watched a few days ago. While that movie focused on how the Depression era affected elderly parents, this movie focused on how it affected the children, more specifically, the teenagers whose parents came upon real hard times. Two good boys and best friends head out across the country looking for work in order to help their families, but harsh reality hits them in the face. Along the way they befriend a girl in the same boat, and then many other kids in that same predicament. There are some surprisingly tough scenes as these young ones face desperation. The movie is also a good reminder that the people you see on the street are often not there by choice. The acting could have been better at times, and the ending cost it a half a popcorn.

Volcano. Strange seismic disturbances in LA lead safety inspector Tommy Lee Jones to realise that an unexpected event has created a volcano under the city that's about to go boom! This late 90s disaster flick came out the same year as Dante's Peak, but unfortunately is nowhere near as good, and certainly hasn't aged as well. It gets real silly real quick, and the effects are also pretty poor and unconvincing and again haven't aged well. Mediocre. :bored:

Hell on Earth!
Intense drama without 'background history'. A movie about the event, about a place. Joe Cole (a bad actor) was surprisingly good! The editing and the inconsistent camera screwed with the very good movie that was there somehow. There's lots of unnecessary moments (with a bit of repetition sometimes) and some awful scenes that doesn't even add nothing to characters or for the event (or place) in any way.

First of all let me say a big Thank You! to those who were so supportive ( both in posts and thumbs ups) of my review of Close Encounters. Your positive feedback is most appreciated. It's not hard to write a good review for an inspired - and inspiring - movie. But having a platform where I can freely express my views, and then to have this kind of encouraging feedback from people who are as invested as I in the creative excellence of movies ( and for that matter, music, writing and the arts) -.makes me feel I've found a safe little nest of a home in the vast reaches of cyberspace.

A few comments and I'll come back again to answer more postings.

Thanks spookie, two thumbs up is the highest praise. Hope you ll be re-watching soon and enjoy the movie as much as I did. Love your musical metaphor about the slow start leading to a crescendo. Perfect description.

And thanks to dadgumblah - you raise a most interesting and thought provoking question. I DID watch the original version, which leaves a the audience with a bit of mystery, and a wish to know more. In fact, you reminded me that I had seen the version where you get to see the inside of the ship, on tv some years back. Ironically I really forgot that version and that ending. I think the original - leaving you with an exalted sense of wonder and curiosity - is a
more ' poetic' way to end the movie. If I can borrow from spookie's musical metaphor, the movie leaves the screen with a resounding flourish. Nothing wrong jmho in leaving the viewer 'wanting just a bit more.' If the movie was a symphony ( and it sort of is, isn't it?) this original version is the one that would lead the audience to rise up and cry out ": Bravo.! "

Busy day for me, but I will be back again with a few more personal replies.

I thought I would give one of these Wes Anderson movies a try after seeing all the recognition, and this one seemed the most appealing given the fact that I love dogs (hehe). The humor was pretty good, but the monotone delivery of most lines lost my interest during some parts. The animation style was cute, but that also wore on me towards the end. I hate the fact that I can't give this a better rating, because it does have a unique charm to it, but I'm not sure if this was enough to draw me to any of Anderson's other movies. I respect the style of it, yet I can't help thinking there are other movies I'd rather be watching.

I love Michael Haneke and although this isn't his best work by a long shot, its still very good film. In typical Haneke fashion, its extremely dark and relies on the audience to try and 'fill in the gaps', which is what I love about his films. Both Huppert and Trintignant are excellent too and it was nice to note a reference to Haneke's Amour. I'm sure a lot of people will not like this and I can see why, I probably just wont agree.

Been gorging on a steady diet of horror and poliziotteschi. I watched the Sleepaway Camp and Reanimator episodes of The Last Drive in With Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder and it's great to see this guy hosting horror movies again. With all the bull**** TNT airs today, you think they would spring to bring back MONSTERVISION (and not cancel Mob City).

Out of the poliziotteschi I've been watching, really only two are of note: From Corleone to Brooklyn (1979) simply for the score and half of the movie being filmed on the grimy streets of 70s New York. The other is Italian gut munching master Lucio Fulci's take on the gangster genre with Contraband (1980). With Fulci holding the reigns, you know this **** is gonna be bloody, and a horror director bringing graphic practical effects to the gangster genre is fun to see. Someone on youtube edited a cut together of all of the mob hits in the movie, which is the only reason you should watch Contraband anyway.

https://youtu.be/Y9UE3mMkkOA

The production of Contraband is also interesting. According to Fulci, they blew the whole movie's budget in two weeks of filming, and actual gangsters/smugglers donated money to the movie and worked as extras and crew members (which wasn't entirely uncommon in poliziotteschi films). One of the gangsters working on set was Giuseppe Grecco, who was the son of Mafia boss Michele Greco, and from his experience on set, Giuseppe would have a brief film career himself as a director in the 90s.

Unfortunately, the poster art for Contraband is lame as ****, and that's the cover art for the American DVD. The UK knows what's up and has this balling ass cover art at the bottom.

From the top 100 cheers list, I thought this was pretty good even if it didn't quite leave me cheering. Spencer Tracy is solid as always playing Father Flanigan. He takes in troubled boys with nowhere to go and helps them turn it around. He expands until they have sort of their own little town, and I thought that was very cool. Whitey comes into the picture played by Mickey Rooney who hams it up, and is Father's biggest challenge yet.

I found this bloody hilarious, dark humour. The dryness of the characters set against a hippie commune and all the problems that ensue. The timing in the 70s is prime also....son called Tet after the "Tet offensive"....that funny. Moddysson is, for sure, a strange director...8 corduroy flares out of 10 :)

The Breakfast Club (1985)

A criminal, a basket case, a princess, a dork, and a jock have Saturday confinement with Paul Gleason. Before they can leave, they've each got to describe who they think they are. Five strangers with nothing in common, except each other.

I was taken in by the synopsis of this film. What a mistake. Two hours of convolution, frustration and bewilderment. I can only blame myself as I could have turned it off any time. To be honest I was hoping it would improve and by the end we would have a revelation that made the tedium worth it. But no. No mystery revealed. Did I miss the object of this film? RottenTomatoes rated it 69%.

rating_2 Moi.. not so generous.

It's about the creator not being able to perform for mother nature, so he finally gives in and then destroys her while sacrificing their kid to sheep.

It's an ugly movie. I despise it.

Adventures in Babysitting. Teenager Elisabeth Shue agrees to babysitting duties, only to be called out for help on a mission of mercy by her best friend. Reluctantly taking her young charges with her into the city, disaster strikes when the car suffers a blowout with no spare tyre, and events then rapidly spiral out of control... This late 80s comedy is as funny and charming as ever, the kind of comedy that just doesn't seem to get made anymore these days. Looks very nice on Blu ray too, with that 80s "look" that just makes me go all nostalgic and melty inside...:yup:
