Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) 4 3rd Watch

I think most people would like this, but probably not as much as me. It's just one of those random movies that everyone finds once in a while that really works for them. It's an end of days comedy/romance that hits me emotionally every time. It's really an odd movie for me to love given my normal taste.

Yes it might be slightly drawn out and atypically overly sentimental in places as is Spielberg's habit but for it's age some of the effects still stand up well, Dreyfuss nails his performance and the actual encounter still holds me spellbound even after multiple viewings.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's in my top ten.

I am reluctant to call this an extremely realistic portrayal of alcoholism because of a couple scenes. It is however a very humanistic look at alcoholism. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The performances and script were very good. I will be surprised if it is not on my 60's list.

SNL alumni Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are fantastic as brother and sister with some serious emotional and psychological problems in this successfully made drama with some really sweet and funny moments, the best part being a musical segment where Hader and Wiig lip synch the entire 80's hit song Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship.

CARMEN ELECTRA'S AEROBIC STRIPTEASE DISC 2 (2003) Holy cow! That's just exactly what I was looking for! A bunch of ladies to encourage me to move my body. Then again, I don't like that 'striptease' word in the title. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the girls do it, but if I'm supposed to do what they are doing... Both of his relapses, especially the first one. Him tearing through the green house and then just pouring the booze on his face. The second one was more believable, but still don't know if I buy this character breaking into the store. Then I hated the guy pouring the Gin on him. I might have been on board if the guy had called the cops or maybe just punched him.Sean, I liked that film too but I found the earlier version of it better and more realistic in dealing with alcoholism. Watched this back at the start of the year and also really enjoyed it. :yup: It wasn't quite what I was expecting (thought it was going to be more of a knockabout comedy) but I found it really sweet and actually very touching. And after not really being bothered with her before I kind of fell in love with Keira Knightley over the course of the film's running time

Another Tarantino which I enjoy and is simply heaps of fun, nothing more. Waltz and Dicaprio were excellent, Foxx was a bit tightlipped in the early segments thus hindering his performance, but then warms up toward the end. The violence was on full blast, I wasn't put off, the vibrant red (for blood) and camera work made it seem less threatening and more comical than anything. Tarantino's masterpiece is still Inglorious Basterds. I wanna see him buckle down and make a film completely lacking the humorous underlay and comical excess evident in all his films, one that takes itself seriously. Tarantino branching out would make for an interesting result, it's good to try at least once. Every director has that one film which you place side-by-side to one of their other films and ask "how the hell did he/she make that film?"

You dig?

Big Eyes (2014)

Just got back from watching what has instantly topped my Best Movies of 2014 list.

Tim Burton directs this dramedy based on the true story of Walter Keane, a plagiarist and con artist, who in the late 50's through the late 60's had his painter wife Margaret create stunning paintings featuring young girls with big eyes and sold them to the world as his own work.

Christoph Waltz is absolutely amazing as Walter, and with his filmography becoming richer with one classic movie after another, not to mention 2 Academy Awards that he's earned over the last 4 years, he is easily becoming one of my all-time favorite actors. But the real star of the picture is Amy Adams, whom I was not a big fan of but have changed my mind about her now. She deserves an Oscar nod and a win for her performance here.

I like a mystery though and don't mind that what's happened is left for the viewer to decide.

Your Cheatin' Heart (1964)

Being a country music fan, I was really looking forward to this movie, but sadly, it wasn't worth the wait. George Hamilton stars as Hank Williams Sr. in this semi-biographical movie about the legendary singer. He does a good job in the role, but the lip-synching is terrible, and the story is flawed.

Unfortunately Hank Sr.'s widow had too big of a say in this movie, so it was dramatized too much to make him look good. It takes out a lot of the drama from his life, and makes the story too wishy-washy. Most of the events in the movie have a slight basis in reality, but they played out differently in his real life, all the way up to the cause of his death, and even the final tribute scene.

Instead of using Hank Sr.'s actual recordings, she wanted to give Hank Williams Jr.'s career a jump-start, so 14 year old Hank Jr. sings the songs in the movie. He's off-key at times, and nowhere near as good as his father for those songs.

If you have a general curiosity about Hank Sr.'s life, this movie is okay, but if you want the real story of the biggest name in country music, this isn't it.

7 year old: "Daddy this movie is sad, Heroe's brother dies in a fire.
6 year old: "Don't worry daddy we won't tell you which fire.

7 year old: "Baymax dies at the end too."

6 year old: "Don't worry daddy we won't tell you the real end but your going to be really happy.

Un dollaro bucato (1965)

Not as good as a Corbucci's or Leone's but it has some interesting details! There's a good twist at the end, the soundtrack is nice (in particular the main theme) but is not very well used!
It's quite entertaining overall!

Indiana Jones: The temple of Doom (1984)

I think this was the first time I watched this movie entirely!
While I understand why this is so loved around here, it's not my cup of tea! It's extremely entertaining and funny (especially on the beggining) but I can't see more than that here! I won't say it's predictable because I always try to place the viewing in the time it was released, but there are some stuff that have no excuse. The acting goes from bad to horrible (the kid is probably the better actor in the whole crew, and that says a lot) and it repeats the same formulas than the first one. But again, is extremely entertaing so I suppose it meets its purpose.

Cool Hand Luke - 7/10

Clearly i had no clue about this before i watched it since i thought it was a Western  . Still i thought this would end up a cert for my list. Overall it was pretty good and Newman was fantastic particularly in the scenes were the guards had broke him and his last escape scenes in the barn. Even though it was only a 2hour film it felt too long, the 15 min+ 50 egg eating scene should've been cut for a start.

The Wild Bunch - 8.5/10

Now the complete opposite, this movie could've added another filler-journey and i wouldn't have made me blink. First of all despite his leg injury - failing to get on his horse/ William Holden was a complete baddass in this; Thornton was the only one other than the viewer who understood this. Now i understand why Peckinpah and especially this were so controversial in their day ; the opening scene and finale were pretty much the standard for violence in the day. Still great to know where Holden Pike username came from, and Wiliam Holden slots comfortably into my top 10 Male performances of all time.

The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard (1936)

I watched this on Amazon Instant Video in HD and the visuals were great. Brilliant blacks and crisp whites. Very minor scratch marks in a few places.

This film won 3 Oscars - Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting actress for Luise Rainer.

I wont discuss the plot except to say it is about the life of Ziegfeld and the shows he put on.

The acting by William Powell (The Thin Man) was excellent. Luise Rainer as his first wife was brilliant and heartbreaking. She was very beautiful. The chemistry between Powell and Rainer was very believable and convincing that they loved each other. Luise Rainer's performance, IMO stole the show, even though her part was lamentably short. She deserved her Oscar.

Over all the musical numbers were spectacular in the grandest of MGM style. The first big number that was on display of Zigfeld's Follies was so big and beautiful (I don't know how they managed it all, mostly in a single unbroken shot) that that scene alone was worth the price of admission, even for those that don't like musicals.

This a long film at just under 3 hours long but holds the viewer's interest throughout. I probably will purchase this in HD or Bluray DVD if I can find it and I heartily recommend it.

Well I was skimming Netflix the other night and came across it. Thought I would give it a shot. I mean I guess if I were going call myself a movie buff I ought to watch it. It was definitely as epic as advertised. Some real memorable scenes. Duval of course and Brando at the end. I didn't realize Harrison Ford and Fishbourne (sp) were in it so that's a nice surprise for my movie game I play, I digress.

The plot was neat enough. Going to kill a decorated US military leader who has gone insane. The movie painted the Vietnam War as hell on earth which I'm sure it was. Had a very dark and gloomy tone, which reflected the war itself. The journey up the river was a neat way to drive the story along and show the war. Keep your interest up to see what was at the end. Everyone did a fine job acting as well.

There just is a lot of, how should I put this, symbolism maybe? Especially the end. The end felt like it was a judgement on the war instead of a conclusion to the movie if that makes sense? I still enjoyed the end, for the most part, but I prefer my movies to have a tangible conclusion to the movie. I get why people love the movie and the themes it stands for, my preference is to tie a movie together instead of making scenes that are up for interpretation I guess is the best way to describe it.

But with those, silly gripes, it is still a must watch for any movie lover. I get why it is so praised, a lot to like in it. Personally I'd give it 3 out of 5. Just not re-watchable to me except for certain scenes but I'm glad I watched it.

I just got back from watching Unbroken (I'm going to review it for the paper that I write for). It's not back, but certainly not good: shmaltzy to the point of numbing, it's pretty much directing by numbers; here's where you show his delinquent youth, here's where you show him applying himself, here's where you show him losing faith in the face of adversity, here's where you show him refusing to back down and regain his fortitude. It's definitely one of the myriad of inoffensive biopics that come out every year that nobody remembers after a few months.

Tusk (2014)

As far as horror films go, this movie is a nice and quite original entry.

The film is not all scary and grotesque. Coming from Kevin Smith, there are some funny moments and scenes where actors talk in long monologues, and when the monologues are being delivered by the always brilliant Michael Parks or an unrecognizable Johnny Depp, you'd want them to be longer.

However, the movie quickly unfolds revealing how the psychopath, played by Parks, turns the Podcaster, played by Justin Long, into a walrus, and the end result is disturbing and nightmarish.

This is definitely one movie you will not forget, but one that could have been executed better. And Kevin Smith still deserves praise for the effort.

The Wrestler (2008)

The story is simple and somehow cliche but Aronofsky proves he's one hell of a director and tells it in an unique way!
The slow pace never gets boring, it's never over-dramatic and by keeping the cinematography simple, it just becomes truthful and powerful! Rourke's performance is epic and makes me wonder why didn't he win the Oscar!
And that final scene... Wow!

I think this is pretty unique, and that's probably my favorite thing about it. I also like the characters and some of the humor. On the downside, even though it's a short movie, I've had a very hard time staying awake twice while watching it now. I like it, I just don't love it.

I like Bogart. I just thought he was wrong for that part. I didn't feel any chemistry between him and Hepburn, and he seemed too old for her.

I'd Rather Be Rich (1964)

I'd Rather Be Rich is a cute romantic comedy starring Sandra Dee, Robert Goulet, Andy Williams and Maurice Chevalier. Cynthia Dulaine (Sandra Dee) is engaged to Warren Palmer (Andy Williams). She finds out that her grandfather Philip Dulaine (Maurice Chevalier) is dying, so she rushes to see him. He tells her that his dying wish is to meet her fiancé, but Warren is stuck at the airport, and he can't get there. She asks a stranger, Paul Benton (Robert Goulet), to pose as her fiancé, and this is where the fun begins.

Without giving out spoilers, there are a few plot twists. and some fun moments when her grandfather tries to sneak cigars. There are few songs in the movie, but not enough to call it a musical. It's a bit predictable, but it's still a fun movie that I would recommend to anyone who likes rom-coms.

A film that is entirely shot from the perspective of cameras, laptops and cell phones. Sounds ambitious.

I saw a short film that employed this technique earlier this year, it was extremely well done. It hit the nail on the head about our use of technology, the good, the bad, the ugly. It was short and sweet. Here we have a feature film starring Elijah Wood as a fan who wins a contest to meet his celebrity crush, played by retired porn star Sasha Grey.

A man online tricks him into following his orders and the results lead to a chase of sorts, blackmail and other twists and turns. Not enough to warrant a feature length film though. Wood, does a serviceable job here and it seems he is creating a niche fan base in the horror genre after his turn in another experimental film; Maniac. Shot almost entirely from his POV. I'm more interested in seeing what he does next in the genre than I am talking about this film.

Grey doesn't do much here other than act as the "scared female" you'd find in so many horror films. She has no problem disrobing, which comes as no surprise. I don't get why people are enamoured with her.

To be honest, it did keep my attention better than I thought it would. It starts off slow, but manages to make it somewhat thrilling. I have to say they do cheat with "camera" techniques in which we see through cars and buildings in some kind of 3D rendering generator. It was odd and took me out of the "reality" of it all. This will not be the next step in "found footage" films, or at least I hope not.

Not my favorite Bergman thus far but a very good one. People can correct me if I am wrong but I get the feeling with Bergman that the first few you see probably are the ones that stick with you. Why I say that is I get the feeling if Winter Light had been my first Bergman it would have compelled me to watch more just like Cries & Whispers and Autumn Sonata did. I say that because it has all the rich themes and the poetic dialogue of the others. Maybe I am wrong. It is certainly possible the characters just didn't grab me the way they did in the others. Anyways that is the feeling I got after watching it.

Beauty and the Beast, 3D // 1991

This was a rewatch by the way, and my opinion hasn't change one bit! Great and gorgeous looking animation, everything feels controlled and swift as we pan around all the colorful animated setpieces and vivid characters. The subject, though quite cliché, never feels tired or worn out. The themes are pretty much as clear as any other Disney film, yet they feel oddly subtle and slightly better handled than previously seen.

Apart from the last "surprise fight", which felt a bit too silly to fit in with the rest of the film and where it was heading, overall the movie feels surprisingly grounded and sensitive. To put it short: it feels a lot like a real movie, even with all its magical elements.

I have a love/hate relationship with 3D, but in some movies I love it. Avatar and Gravity for example use it to great success. But what about this more than 20 year old 2D hand drawn animated film? It's one of the best 3D movies I've seen. A slight pop-up feel, but it does nothing but add to the feel of it all.

Predestination // 2014

Thinking about the fact that this movie makes no sense at all and wouldn't be possible to start with, it is quite an entertaining ride. We got some great acting in here, beautiful visuals in the hands of controlled direction, and a good soundtrack as well. This movie, by the way, was different WAY different than how I expected and how it had been promoted. This is a drama, not an action thriller...

Overall it was a well made film, apart from its way too ambitious script that not only get lost in itself and becomes messy and too much for its own good, but also works from an idea that sounds good on paper but would've been thrown away before even getting made. Why? Simply out of the fact that it is not possible and works from an idea that evolves out of something that never even existed. Yes, it's a time travel movie so it isn't supposed to be all that real that's obvious, but in its own world it doesn't make sense either. But interesting, weird and different? For sure.

The "2/365" is the movie count, and the "day" is obviously the day count.

I think I'll change something though, so I have two movie counts, and is able to run one with 1 movie per day, and if I watch more than one per day, I'll have a count for the full score as well....

Good, but not the greatness I was hoping for. I think the story would have had a better emotional pull if they would have left Douglas's character grey instead of having him go black so quick. I really didn't have anything to latch onto as the end approached. Certainly still a relevant film which is always cool to see. Every generation thinks theirs has reached a new low in humanity, but as it turns out humanity has always been pretty self serving. One other note, maybe ACTUALLY bringing the carnival to town was hammering an already obvious point home a little too hard.:D

Saw it on Netflix. It got dropped by the studio, it was going get a theatrical release. Don't know the whole story behind it. Wow this movie is quite the whirlwind. It's like the light hearted version of Collateral (one of my favorite movies) but with limos. I didn't know much about the movie going into it but thought i'd give it a whirl.

It certainly was entertaining. Definitely keeps your attention. The movie is a lot of fun and the plot keeps you guessing. It's worth a watch. But there were some weird choices. Some unnecessary characters and some unresolved story lines. It was a mess of a fun movie. Had some highlights and low lights. Mixed bag really. I'd recommended a viewing just for the entertainment, but don't expect a tightly wand up movie.

I'd give it a 2.5/5....close to a 3 but no cigar.

I once asked in my review thread, whether I should do Gone Girl or Nightcrawler next, as a bonus review. I ended up doing both of them for y'all, and Nightcrawler is now live in my thread with Gone Girl already posted a week ago! Please check them out!

...One evening, when Bloom accidentally ends up in the middle of the merciless mayhem of television reporting, he suddenly knows exactly what his next big step in life will be ... His new life style, filming violent and shocking images, have indeed led to cash and recognition, but ever so gently and concurrently he also removes himself from the real world, and the people who live in it.

Dan Gilroy has created a film that slowly comes creeping like a mysterious and frightening figure in the illuminating gloom of the night lights. For it is certainly not a pleasant film to live through, and especially its picturesque projection of the barbarous perfidy of the TV medium, truly creeps uncomfortably under your skin......

If a movie is this deliberately cryptic it better give me something else to cling to. The Silence never did, despite my expecting it to at any moment. I know with the muddled time and place people are probably going to tell me it is meant to be dream like. That is all well and good, but I need more. This is my least favorite Bergman by a long shot so far.

Top Five (2014)

Chris Rock wrote, directed, and stars in this entertaining comedy that co-stars Rosario Dawson and features cameos by Tracy Morgan, Cedric the Entertainer, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, Whoopi Goldberg, Gabrielle Union, and rapper DMX.

Rock's style of directing and storytelling in Top Five mirrors to a certain extent the style of Woody Allen, notably for the backdrop being New York City, which becomes just another character in the movie.

The Knack...and How to Get It (1965) 2.5

I was a little skeptical of this; I thought it was a bit of a red flag that it was a Cannes' winner, yet not on the top 100 British films list. Unfortunately, it was pretty much what I expected; likable with that British charm, but very forgettable.

The Chronicles of Narnia (2005)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519BHPC8P2L.jpg

This franchise theoretically should have been a part of my childhood memories. It was very popular back in the day. In fact, most of the people I know have seen it. It's a fantasy movie, which I love, and so I honestly don't know how it happened that tonight was the first time I saw it. Still, I'm probably better for it because now that I'm a grown-up, I can see it for what is really is.

And what it really is is fake. Unbelievably fake. First of all, for a fantasy movie, it's not very magical and imaginative. Every character and theme in the movie is just a mixture or a direct copy from something that's already been done. There nearly no originality in this at all. You have your orcs, your talking animals, your ice queen or whatever, your unicorns and so on and so forth. And then, in terms of the story, you have your usual prophecy-driven battle of good vs. evil.

And all of that would be wonderfully insignificant but take a look at the following quote from RottenTomatoes:
With first-rate special effects and compelling storytelling, this adaptation stays faithful to its source material and will please moviegoers of all ages.
This has got to be the first time I've seen the critics consensus quote to be a completely opposite description of what a film is like.

First of all, the "first-rate" special effects are actually utterly rubbish. And I don't mean early 2000s rubbish, I mean rubbish, full stop. That would be ok, except this is a fantasy movie, and if you want your stuff to look convincing, realistic and magical, you've got to have decent special effects. I'm not saying you can't enjoy a fantasy movie without them, but they are a significant part of the illusion. There's crappy CGI everywhere, obvious green screens where they didn't need to be, and what little props there are that aren't computer generated might as well be, because they are of such poor quality. The swords, for instance, are very clearly made of plastic.

Now let's talk about the "will please moviegoers of all ages" part. Excuse me, but that's just not true. In fact, this movie shouldn't please anyone. The story is quite childish. It's simple, straightforward, easy to follow. So it's for little children right? Well, let's just say that the Disney logo should be overlaid onto the frames during the main battle in which creatures are slashed, pierced with swords, and bitten to their deaths. So it's for adults, right? With a story like this most adults would probably fall asleep during the movie. The only age group I think would be even remotely satisfied by Chronicles of Narnia are teenagers, but then why would they watch this cheap version of The Lord of the Rings, while they can watch... The Lord of the Rings, for instance?

All in all, the movie is an utter piece of garbage and a waste of time. It could work if it wanted to be something simpler, but then the movie had to follow a book, so it really couldn't. As a result we got something which should have been done with more imagination and, most crucially, with more money. It really puzzles me why this thing was so popular, and why it got such good ratings on RT. It's worthless.

Umberto D (De Sica) - 7/10 - I love this movie, but I still think it could have been better. Being a shorter movie, some things are redundant. For example, we learn the landlady is a cold hearted woman, but we keep seeing new scenes between the tenant and her.. When Umberto tries to sleep, over and over music going on, it takes way too much time. We get it, Florence is not for him, but we understood it the first time. Lots of time spent walking back and forth, including Maria going back and forth, opening or closing the window, even though nothing is being said between her and the soldiers. Lots of repetitious stuff--

There were some silent parts that said something, but sometimes silence with nothing happening. It would have been nice to know about the main character. Why is he alone? Does he choose this? Did he just want to live with his dog, have a better wage? Is old age his true enemy? Was he ever married?

An absolute masterpiece from welles and one of the finest film-noirs I have ever seen. Stunning photography and lavish setpieces give the film a dark, seedy atmosphere which very few films can evoke. That final scene with the mirrors is unbelievable, it genuinely left my jaw on the floor.

Opera 4

The story is sorta rubbish, but Opera is damn good entertainment nonethless. The first hour is typical slasher fare but Argento eventually goes all out and provides some of the most vibrant direction and glorious murders of his entire career. Thoroughly enjoyed this one and I'll definitely be watching some more from the master of giallo.

Big Trouble (Cassavetes) - I won't rate this, because of the circumstances of the movie. 1/3 was shot, and Peter Falk asked Cassavetes to finish it. John asked for his name to be removed, but of course they probably only used his name to sell a few more, or to have someone like me watch this. It's awful. It's just so sad reading from Cassavetes right before he died that people will think this was the last movie he did.

Pierrot Le Fou (1965) 3.5

I often don't know what to expect going into a movie like this, especially with a director like Godard. I had previously seen 3 of his movies; one I didn't like(Breathless), one I liked(Band of Outsiders), and one I loved(Contempt), and I still felt in the dark after about 15 minutes of this one. After that, it basically settled into a lovers on the run movie, which is something I like. It didn't have the normal type of excitement that I look for in a movie like that, but I don't think that was the goal. It was lovers on the run Godard style, and I enjoyed the different style with a familiar narrative. I did not like Belmondo in Breathless, but I thought he was good in this, and I liked Anna Karina a lot.

Hercules

Now besides the fact that the Rock looks as Greek as Tom Cruise is a German, the film was one of those action films that I could watch repeatedly. Not for the acting but purely just to switch your mind off and watch something enjoyable. I did like the twist on the trials of Hercules they threw in and how is was all fabricated. Brett Ratner did ok with this film and the story flowed well.

The Equalizer

I watched a lot of movies recently and I am going through them now. I thought this movie started a bit slowly and I couldn't really figure out what Denzel's character was going to do. Once you get into it though you go on a bit of a thrill ride, I mean there is a fair few movies out there similar to this but I always like Denzel's class and he always brings some intelligence to his roles. I actually like the main antagonist sort of lower level Anton Chigurh (no country for old men).

A Walk Among the Tombstones

I didnt expect this movie to turn out the way it did, I thought it would be another Liam Neeson action flick. Turned out it is a well rounded thriller, not really on the same level as Taken but still not a bad job. You can always believe Liam Neeson is these roles now due to Taken so that was not a problem. The only thing I disliked was showing the faces of the people doing the crimes.

The "found footage" style is becoming annoying and nothing new, are filmmakers going to do this for every genre??? Wow so much better than the first opening it to the city was a good idea and the characters were all likable. This is the first time I have ever watched this movie and I had heard nothing but good things about it. Honestly not my favorite Stephen King adaptation to movie and it seemed pointless to make this movie. I know the basic story is 4 boys want to find a dead body but it was that interesting to me. I did like the actors who played the 4 boys, Jerry O'Connell and Corey Feldman I personal thought they stood out more than the other 2. Not my personal favorite movie and I would question ever watching it for a second time.

X-Men Days of Future Past

I remember this movie got a lot of hype because of the past and future characters all in the one movie. In some ways it was exciting to see all the characters in one movie but I felt the story was a bit mediocre. From what I understand this was a comic book storyline and a popular one but I felt more for First Class than this. All the actors were good in it and Michael Fassbender's Magneto is always so fascinating to watch, I also really enjoyed the Quicksilver scenes they were fun to watch. With Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America in 2014 I felt this was 3rd for comic book movies.

All the performances by the actors were good and believed their characters, got to say Eric Bana's American accent was spot on in this couldn't hear his Australian like in his other roles. I would go through some of the unbelievable stuff but I wont ruin it for anyone who may not have seen it yet. Hats off to the stunt guys as well I felt every crunch down the mountain side. Back to Mr. Deeds.. First, I love Gary Cooper, his integrity. Some say minimalist, I say that some people aren't very demonstrative or gesticulate. But I believe him in every role he's ever played. These are my favorite types of films - an American microcosm, there's no fancy angles, just a great movie with a great theme. Besides how money ruins things, but how people lose sight of even the things they love because they're caught up in a rat race to benefit 1% of the population. I love how even a man with his beliefs becomes a little corrupted, such as when the man asks, "Why are you feeding horses donuts when so many of your fellow man is hungry" - the man who enters the house is the same kind of man, except he wasn't lucky. It's not a skill to be born into privilege. He's totally sane, not an assassin, it's the situation him and millions of people in America (and elsewhere) were facing. It's so touching while he's eating he almost feels a sense of guilt as his family is starving at home, and asks if he could take some to feed them. He also finds out the only person really close to him is the one who betrays him. Why? For a month's vacation with pay. Money over humans.

The courtroom scene is wonderful, like every Capra courtroom scene. It's about conformity, how people are all different in their own ways. The most sane man being called crazy. Just like crazy people think others are nuts. I see the importance of this film because it seems we're almost going through the same thing, and we have the thing I'm typing on as a new distraction. The key is not to let it control us. One of those great films that either reinforce your values, or at least to consider and re-evaluate things. I highly recommend it. It usually has to take watching someone else cry on the screen to give me tears, but the word "hungry" repeated in my head, and how it was said - the greatness of acting. Could this movie be made today? As if having empathy for the working-class is decadent, or being honest, having values is "freedom-taking" - I'm hoping for a New Deal, real reform in America and throughout the world, and not to go the other way. It seems like everyone is being subdivided into groups to fight each other, divide and rule, Hegelian and Orwellian. Mr. Deeds Goes To Town (Capra) - 9/10 - I tried watching this a little over a year ago, and from the beginning it was scratching, so I took it back to the library, and it took them until now to "fix" it.

I think this is one of those films that should be mandated for every American citizen.

Capra has been one of my favorite directors, definitely the most earliest. This film has human emotions all over it, and it's done it such a great way. I almost wish I could read the original screenplay just to see what Capra thought was important to include. And by coincidence, at around 2am I was flipping around, and they had the great "You Can't Take It With You" last night. It was right at the time Grandpa goes into the tax office, and asks the man why he's there. I love it. People have been so programmed to just do what their told, go to the job, pay bills, die. "Isn't there something you'd rather be doing" and I think most people do and should try.

If you read the rest, would you consider it a spoiler? It's subjective, but to play it safe, I thought I'd hide it.

Love Affair (1939) - 6/10 - Worth a watch, nothing amazing. I don't like Charles Boyer after watching Gaslight, just because I didn't like his character. I can't put it into words, but the movie is missing something even though the theme is worth exploring.

How to train your Dragon 2

The first one is one of my favorite animated movies (easily top 10), people told me that this was better than the first so I was excited when I finally watched it. Now I don't think it is as good as the first but it is still solid, all the characters are likable especially the Dragons. I did like the setting and how they placed the timeline 7 years or something after the first, it just shows how much Berk had grown. Overall it was pretty good, it would probably be just out of my top 10.

If you haven't, DON'T watch the trailer. Personally I think it gives too much away.

Yeah, I just love those stories with people truly wanting to succeed in something. Someone who has talent and will do anything to accomplish something with it. It's just such an experience to watch such movies. 'Whiplash' though, seems to take it to another level... It goes that extra distance, it isn't afraid to be too raw or too "in there". It's just powerful, emotional, intense.

A great character study, a well told musical journey, and just all in all a great damn movie. I can't see anybody not liking this movie. Maybe they some won't love it, but I can't see how you can hate it or not get captivated by what's going on, and forget everything you may not like about it. But really I don't feel like saying all too much, one should just go see it! ;)

A look back at Ebert's life. From his early days, his days as a journalist, to his days with Gene Siskel. A relationship which I learned had a rocky start. It also touched on his marriage to wife Chaz, his writing, and of course his love of films. But the man himself is the focus of the film. And a good part of that deals with his later days of his life battling cancer and many complications that came from various medical procedures. The framing of the film is a long running internet interview with Hoops Dreams director Steve James. An interview that sadly does not finish before Ebert passes. It serves as a bio pic documentary, and also a fond farewell to beloved film critic.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

Finally saw the capper of the trilogy and must say I think it's the best of the lot. While the previous two had their share of action and character development, this one is almost all action. But...there is the performance of Richard Armitage as Thorin. I thought he did an excellent job portraying the madness that the treasure he guarded held over him.

I also loved the little touches like the mountain goats that the dwarves rode, and the huge boar that Billy Connolly (as Dain the dwarf) rode. Great fun!

Christopher Lee is brilliant as the silent Dracula who although does not get much screen time, really makes his presence felt throughout. It does take a while to get into the film and it really could have done with Peter Cushing but Hammer fan's should enjoy this and it's a sterling effort at a remake.

Point Break (Kathryn Bigelow, 1991)http://www.filmbiz.asia/media/BAhbB1sHOgZmSSIsMjAxMS8wOS8xMy8yMC8zMS8zNi8zMjQvcG9pbnRfYnJlYWsuanBnBjoGRVRbCDoGcDoKdGh1bWJJIg01MDB4 MTAwMAY7BlQ?suffix=.jpg&sha=ef47af13

I had to make a special post for the awesomeness of Point Break. I just couldn't wait until I got my regular computer back and mention it in one of my many movie tabs. Kathryn Bigelow had to wait 17 years after this to get her Oscar for directing The Hurt Locker when anyoene with half a brain (or half a set of cojones) knows she deserved it for Point Break. I admit that she did have a great set of actors to work with - never underestimate. the abilities of the Mount Rushmore of male actors - Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, Gary Busey and John C. McGinley. Especially when they deliver such Shakespearean dialogue as "Young. dumb and full of cum", "This was about us against the system!", "I caught my first tube today, sir", "You gotta go down", "I'm so hungry I can eat the ass-end of a rhino", "You gonna jump or jerk off?", "We"re outta here."

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/kmvXdUaUqgA/sddefault.jpg

Besides the great acting and dialogue, you've got a terrific collection of action scenes - car chases, foot chases. bank robberies, surfing, sky diving, martial arts, police assaults, etc .So, the movie has a deep plot about personal freedom trying to be stomped on by the Man, Zen performances by Swayze and Reeves, scenery-chewing by those twin Oliviers, Busey and McGinley, a nice performance by Lori Petty who brings some reality to the proceedings and scintillating hyper-reality provided by Bigelow. If you've read this far, and you think this review is a joke, you're partially right, but the joke's on you because I think for all the preposterous hokum of the plot and the movie as a whole, Point Break is one of the most-enjoyable and entertaining movies ever made, and I'm reminded of that each time I see it.

Well thank goodness it is finally over. The final battle was very big, as it should have been. But srsly, the first 15 minutes of this movie HAD NO REASON NOT TO BE AT THE END OF THE LAST FREAKING MOVIE! But overall the movie was still good. But I still say if you cut out certain side plots in these movies you should have been able to make this a streamlined two picture story instead of the over stuffed trilogy that it is.

Wolf Children ( Mamoru Hosoda, 2012)

I had really mixed feelings on this one. The animation was gorgeous. It was an absolute delight to look at. I also felt strongly for Hana and her struggles as a mother coping with the task of raising two (very unusual) children on her own. The quieter moments between Hana and her children were also very effective and touching.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/MoFoMovieGifs/wolfchildrenrain.gif

However, the scenes of the children's tantrums, their "puppyhood" and of their ultimate transformations left me rolling my eyes, as did some of the early romantic scenes between Hana and the father. I just can't get past the whole lycanthropy/bestiality/mythical being angle. Sorry. Not bad at all, but not really my cup of tea.

Nightcrawler, 2014
Dir: Dan Gilroy

The character of Lou Bloom, an ambitious, perseverant, detailed, manipulative and most likely sociopathic budding news cameraman, is interesting to watch in itself. But what makes following the evolution of his career, as well as the degeneration of his sanity, as engrossing as the graphic news stories he records and sells, is the intricately detailed and absorbing performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.

The main problem with the plot is that, despite the advantage of having such an interesting main character at its disposal, it always maintains its distance. It might be interpreted as an intentional reference to the explicit footage Bloom works with; they reveal the facts visually, but there is still a large gap between what is caught by the camera and the much cruder reality (which the film suggests constantly; most images of violence did not feel shockingly disturbing, probably due to Bloom’s and the audience’s unfamiliarity with those subjects, as well as them being displayed on a camera or a television screen). But in my opinion, if something lacked, it was a more in depth dissection of this disturbed man.

Still, this doesn't discredit the movie’s efficacy at evoking suspense, both for the crimes Bloom hastily chases and for the escalating corruption of his already-dubious psyche.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - 5/10

Even with my expectations tempered from what they had been, if I would have waited just one day more before making a most disappointing list for 2014 (http://brianjhadsell.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-five-most-disappointing-films-of.html), this would have topped it as #1. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is made by a team of people who seemingly understood what made Sin City popular, but not why. Since the first film was shot in black-and-white with the occassional splash of color (eyes, lips, hair, a dress, a heart-shaped bed, an especially grotesque character, etc...), they inluded a lot more of it (a car, a street-ful of flashing neon lights, an entire person, etc...). Since the original occassionally cut to a hyper-stylized, comic-like shooting style, they included a lot more of that, intercut briefly and at awkward, disorienting times for no reason other than to include it. Since the original presented a series of independent stories that briefly intersected with shared characters or locations, they again went with more: most of the stories featuring the same exact same set of characters in centrally important roles.

This film had so much potential going into production, between a fantastic cast (including new-to-the-series Joseph Gordon Levitt and Josh Brolin) and a rich set of stories to choose from. It fails specifically because it tries to outdo and tie everything back to the original film. The fact that the two most important stories feature women manipulating men into doing what they selfishly want them to do, at great risk to their own health and sanity, makes this off-puttingly sexist to boot (one among an entire collection would have been fine, as would both spread out over a couple sequels, but all of it together is too much of the same thing all at once).

Poorly distributed, this is a recent Second World War film focusing on Brazilian soldiers who (really) fought on the brutal Italian front.

I worried at first that this was going to be a generic warfilm that happened to be about Brazilian soldiers, or a mere exercise in patriotism, but in fact it was something really superb.

After their unit has their first taste of combat in a night time attack, they make a disorderly retreat and a number become lost in the dark. The next morning they realise that they could be shot as deserters, so make for a nearby road which is heavily mined, with the intention of clearing it to prove their commitment.

Languorously paced and often minimal, this is certainly not a normal war film, but a philosophical discourse on the nature and value of sacrifice. The soldier's efforts, like those of the brave Brazilian soldiers who travelled half way round the world to fight in a war that wasn't theirs, are quickly forgotten and ignored by everyone around them.

The harsh reality of war summed up without the gore or violent of a lot of other war films.

The Dish (2000) - Recommended by Honeykid and JayDee

I just finished watching The Dish, and I had to do a quick write up to say Thank You to both Honeykid and JayDee for recommending this movie.

This is a great movie about how a town in Australia helped bring the 1969 Moon landing to TVs all over the world with a satellite dish in the middle of an Australian sheep farm. It had the unexpected bonus of Sam Neill as one of the stars of the movie. I've been a fan of his ever since I saw him in Jurassic Park. (I just wish he would have gotten rid of the pipe in the movie.)

I don't know how accurate the movie is, but the story is exciting and suspenseful, with just the right amount of humor. I highly recommend this movie.

Calvaire (2004) 3

Belgian horror about a guy who breaks down out in the woods in the middle of hillbilly land. I thought going in that this was going to be full of violence, but it wasn't at all. It creates a great sense of dread early on, with a few intense scenes. It is slow paced and more psychologically disturbing. It's very well made and acted, and the sounds the pig made while it was being raped were very realistic.(not that I know from experience).

Johnny Guitar (1954)

Much is made of the use of colour here and it is indeed downright brilliant. I really enjoyed this and it was great seeing such a different take on the western genre, however Joan Crawford was a little too over-the-top for me.

Meet John Doe (Capra) - 8/10 - Great film... More relevant film than modern films... A reflection of the times, as a corrective condition. This movie at times is hopeless, like the human civilization, but there is hope, but only with action. Do what you can. Even if it's spreading a great film...

After reading about it, I see it's available for public domain. You can watch the movie down below.

The Babadook isn't a bad film, but it isn't the great film that I expected to see... The ending and generally the script is weak. Actors were OK! If you like horror films that aren't scary, this is for you. Would I watch this again? NO!

I think The Babadook is a horror film but it's more of a psychological thriller about the loss of a loved one and being unable to cope with the possibility that you cannot take care of a special child or even yourself while dealing with that loss.

was excited to watch Babadook.. but was overall ok in the end, on its small budget.

This movie was brilliant, has the perfect combination of sex, lies, murder, and plot twists to keep your eyes on the screen.

Whiplash // 2014

If this is not the best movie of last year, then I don't know what is. I'm not sure if I really can give this the top spot, but it's defiantly one of the best movie experiences I've had in the last 5 years or so. Holy f*ck this was intense. Don't even know what to say... I guess I'll just put it this way:

The Night of the Hunter (1955)

Too bad this is the only film that actor Charles Laughton ever directed, because this one is a winner! I thought I had seen all of this as a kid, but turns out I'd seen only the last third. I'm glad I watched it again because I missed a lot: There is no surprise from the start that Robert Mitchum is a murderer disguised as a traveling minister and that he preys on widows for their money, then murders them. He then comes across Shelley Winters, a recent widow with two children. The oldest, a boy, is on to Mitchum's game and so starts a cat-and-mouse between the children and the "minister" as he stalks them for hidden money that their late father left them.

MItchum has rarely been more menacing and there are many tension-filled scenes where you don't know what he's going to do with the children. Laughton chose (rightly in this case) to film this movie in black-and-white because I think color would have ruined the eeriness of scenes of the deep South, particularly where the children are floating in a small boat down the river, and many of the animals that prowl the shores come out to watch them. There is symbolism, both obvious and not, One instance is where their boat is seen floating, observed from above through a spider's web, and it seems as if they are drifting through and out of it, ala escaping the web of the minister. But are they? The framing is awesome also, something I rarely go on about in movies. There is a bit in the movie where someone is standing in front of the window of a diner named "Spoons" and they are blocking the first "s" and the second one is covered up by the frame. Whether intentional or not, it's still funny. There are also fades from dark and light (especially in the last fifteen minutes or so) that are superbly used. Lillian Gish bookends the movie as a force of good, an elderly woman who takes in orphans. She is well-read in the Bible but is not above putting a load of buckshot in an enemy.

Hard to impress how much I love this movie but I promise it's well-worth a viewing. You may or may not love it (some critics thought it was a bit ham-fisted) but give it try.

http://www.michiganquarterlyreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Whiplash-Poster-slice.jpg
- This movie is the BEST movie of the 2000's without a doubt. The most intense experience I've ever seen on a screen and two of the most admirable and astounding performance of all-time (no kidding it's f*cking true). When I don't feel very well, my 2 choices are Music or Movie with Whiplash I got both with some incredible musical solos and some epic piece of music. A new favorite in my top 10 and this movie kinda reminds me of, when I first watch American History X and completely fell in love with it so it wouldn't surprise me if it was to go even higher on my top 10. Big thanks to Damien Chazelle for this awesome movie night. My #1 pick for the oscars.

Nice write-up, I agree with your thoughts. You should check out Cape Fear (1962) for another great Mitchum performance (who's of the same sinister nature).

Not very well made and pretty ridiculous, yet it's fun and has a good ending.

Thanks, hello101. Yes, I've seen the original Cape Fear, and it's mainly because of Mitchum's performance that I prefer it over the remake (although I love that movie also!). Both Mitchum movies are just oozing with evil moodiness.

Aw, that's a shame. For me, Enter The Dragon is everything an action movie should be and more.

Sonny Chiba's movies from the same era were better than Bruce Lee's in my opinion. I think the main reason Bruce Lee is so famous is because he was the first to bring it to America. Bruce Lee does have a strong personal presence though, and that certainly adds to his charm and inherently the charm of his films.

P.S. Bruce Lee doesn't do Karate.

Sweet Sixteen Not interested. I give a 0 star rating.

I tried watching 15 minutes and it annoyed the hell out of me.
The dialogue kept becoming really quiet and/or unintelligible and after that 15 minutes I was frustrated enough to give up.
