Night Moves (1975) 3.5
This was kind of a strange movie for me. The first half had me kind of thinking that there wasn't much going on. By the time it was over, I was kind of fascinated and felt that I needed to watch it again soon. It takes some dark turns, and I feel like I may have missed some things along the way. I'd be curious of other people's thoughts who have seen it. Gene Hackman was excellent as usual, and it features James Woods and Melanie Griffith in very early roles. Speaking of Hackman, one thing that was so great about 70's movies to me is that the actors looked like real people, instead of models. I think that helps make the movies feel more authentic.

Preposterous, empty, barely entertaining caper film.
The Wolf of Wall Street - 9/10
Very great entertaining film with lots of humor and witty dialogue. I think DiCaprio really nails this role, IMO he's a very underrated actor - and the rest of the cast in this film is great too. My only gripe is that it does seem to drag on just a little at 3 hours; they've pretty much established that Jordan Belfort is an egotistical, hedonistic bastard pretty early on in the film - so after awhile the partying, drugs, and sex scenes seem a little repetitive and too much like filler.
Nevertheless I really didn't mind, this is one entertaining film that I highly recommend.

I'm probably the last person on this board to see this movie at the cinema, but I got to it at last. I'm with pretty much everybody else in enjoying this flick. It's great with nary a dull moment. It plays more like a pulse-pounding espionage movie than a superhero movie, but it's all good. Great stuff.

This was a huge surprise; I loved every minute of it. Peter Falk and John Cassavetes are brilliant as lifelong friends with issues. They have great chemistry which leads to unexpected emotion. It has a mob storyline, but it's their relationship in which the film is built around, and excels. The ending was powerful, I found the whole movie to be realistic, and I'd recommend this to anyone. The movie was not always edited crisply but that didn't hurt it for me.

JFK
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/JFK-poster.png
I was going to wait to post this in the Movie Tab, but eff it.
I love reading about a conspiracy theories, mysteries and urban legends. There's just something about the mysterious and unknown that really grabs my interest. Even if it isn't true, it's still a hell of alot of fun to read. Delving into this film I expected something that's good, but forgettable. I never really considered Oliver Stone a great director, so I was shocked to discover that this film is magnificent. It is an absorbing thrilling film about the John F.Kennedy assassination. I should have pulled out my little tinfoil hat, because this film is a descent down the rabbit-hole of paranoia, suspicion and unanswered questions.
http://a.ndri.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/11026-tinfoil-hat.jpg
It seems there's a conspiracy for just about everything, most of it is blatant lies. Far-fetched lies or misconceptions which hold very little grasp on truth. But what if? what if some of these conspiracies could actually be true? This is a film that explores those ideas, and it does so with conviction. Kevin Costner is incredible here, and he gives a genuinely stellar performance. I always thought he was a mediocre actor, but It turns out I really underestimated the man. JFK clocks in at almost 3 1/2 hours, yet it is compelling and entertaining all the way through. It's paced extremely well, and Stone's directing in my eyes is remarkable. The film looks sharp, and it's pseudo-documentary style really blends in nicely with the narrative. We all know that the JFK shooting happened, but do we know the entire truth? We obviously don't, and we might never will. But Stone shows us that we must ask questions, we must think outside of the box.
I'll put this review to an end, by stating that I immensely enjoyed this great film. It's a focused, absorbing viewing and recalls the great paranoia thrillers of the 70's like The Conversation.Which if you haven't seen you totally should bro, it's like all rad and stuff. I give JFK a 4.5.

One day all the cats in the world are going to band together and kill us all for doing things things like that to them. That cat is thinking, "Yeah, laugh now, motherf**ker. Your time is coming."
I want to see JFK, but the length keeps putting me off. Which is an asinine reason, really, since I might watch two movies back to back that equal four hours or more anyway. I guess there's just something about watching one movie that's close to four hours that puts me off. It's the same reason I haven't watched Gone With the Wind. I know some people watch long movies like that in halves or segments, but doing that takes me out of the movie. Once I push play, I don't want to leave the couch until the credits roll.

The Expendables (2010)
http://www.aceshowbiz.com/images/still/the_expendables_poster04.jpg
I know the third movie is coming out in August, but I'm just now seeing the first one. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Action is the only thing that really matters here, what with the flimsy setup to take out a bad guy general and the bad-guy-in-a-suit who really runs things (played by Eric Roberts). As the poster shows, there are quite a few well-known supporting players making up Stallone's squad. Willis is the CIA honcho who hires Stallone and co. for the gig, and Rourke is the zen-type tattoo artist who gives advice (of a sort) but doesn't go into battle with the gang. Lots of good action, and Stallone isn't afraid to show that he's aging and can't quite handle every big baddie that he has to fight. This one has just got me enthused for the next two.

I wasn't a big fan of the first Expendables, but I really enjoyed the sequel, primarily because of Van-Damme.
Judging by the trailer for the third one, Stallone is already running out of action heroes to throw into the movie. I mean, Kelsey Grammar? Did I miss the decade where Frasier was a gun-toting, muscled-up vigilante?

It has it's moments and does a decent job of blending comedy and drama. My problem with it was that I found the two main characters to be more annoying than interesting. With the whole movie being about their relationship, that limited how much I could enjoy this film.

I went and watched X-Men: Days of Future Past. There's a longer review in the signature, if not, it's fine, I'll post it up on here when I get a chance. Here's my conclusion:
It is films like Days of Future Past that truly shows what superhero movies are meant to be. It isn't as simple as a mutant going back in time to stop a couple of robots, but something with a lot more depth than that. The X-Men movies have always had subtexts about equality, and inspiration taken from actual events in history, but it has never been stronger in this film.

Godzilla 2014
I have never watched the 50's versions of Godzilla but I had seen the 1998 version which I thought was ok. I actually preferred the 1998 version of Godzilla over the original as I thought it put a modern twist on the franchise. I did however like how hey kept it nostalgic with his creation with the sound and design the 1998 one is just my preference. Visually this movies was pretty good with a lot of detail going into Godzilla. The story was good as well although I thought it did drag in some parts. I also liked that they didn't put too much American spin on a Japanese creation and placed some of the story in Japan.
Overall I would recommend watching this as it hold ups to blockbusters coming out this year.

X-Men: Days of the Future Past. Surprisingly, the story line had real twists to it and was full of substance; had gone to watch it expecting lots of action sequences and I wasn't disappointed. But the intricate details of the story had me riveted throughout and the movie is what you would call a complete package. Just one complaint though: Halle Berry has hardly any role.. Just a bit in the beginning and then in the Sentinel fight sequence in the end. Badly wanted to see more of her :(

The Trip to Italy (2014). As a UK viewer I got an opportunity to see this in its feature form. Its actual format is a six episode TV series, following on from 2010's The Trip. The rest of the world will only see this as a feature, which I suspect will lose some of its weight. It's basically two comdeians, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon going on a trip to review restaurants whilst goading each other with who-can-do-the-best-impression-of-Al Pacino, Michael Caine, Christian Bale etc. There's also some darker elements at play, with discussions about growing older and being overlooked by the opposite sex.
It's very funny, very English, and strangely comforting. I honestly don't know how viewers outside the UK will be able to fully appreciate this because some of the references are distinctly British (impressions of Michael Parkinson or Ronnie Corbett won't resonate much beyond this sceptred isle).

After a half hour into this movie or so, I could take NO MORE. Shut it off!
HOW could this movie have a 90% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes?!
Carrie Fisher wrote the script for this movie and she also wrote the book it's based on. The book is also pretty much based on her life. Meryl Streep basically plays her. Now, Carrie Fisher writes good books -- at least, I enjoyed her two autobiographies, Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic. But this movie felt NOTHING like a Carrie Fisher story. Sure, I can see how it's connected to Carrie, but it would have been LEAP YEARS better if Carrie had starred in the movie herself. Meryl Streep absolutely sucks in this and combine her with Shirley MacLaine as her mother and an absolutely boring storyline about a drug addict actress working on the set of a low budget movie... this was DREADFUL. Dreadful! Irritating and painful to sit through. I surely thought there must be tons of bad reviews for this movie, but NOOOO. Critics must be kissing ass because of Meryl. I hated it. If it had been Carrie Fisher playing the part, maybe it would have been more bearable.
And the sunglasses Meryl wears in this movie (seen on poster) are even more cringe worthy.

Wow. I watched this last night and haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's a psychological thriller that takes a lot of thought. But it's worth it. The bets film I've seen in months. Outstanding.

Salo (1975) 2
My biggest fear was that this movie was cheaply made. That wasn't a problem and the performances were pretty convincing. I watched the dubbed version which worked to my advantage because some of the dialogue came out quite funny. I'd say it was disgusting and disturbing enough, but too slow in parts, with no payoff in the end.

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) 3
A film about prejudice that centers on an unlikely relationship. It works well because that relationship is very believable. I probably liked it about as much as I can a movie like this, in which I cannot personally relate to anything in particular. I thought it was a pretty strong movie with good emotion.

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) 3
This was a pretty nice surprise, and I don't think I got everything. I usually like more of a plot; this seemed to be a series of dreams, but they never went too far into silly territory. At times funny with some dark touches with good style and characters.
Glad you liked it, I would agree with your assessment although I enjoyed it a bit more, really fascinating film that makes me want to watch more Bunuel. I hope it makes the 70s list. You've watched some really interesting films recently, some of them the same that I have chose to watch for the 70s, and the others tend to be ones I also want to watch before I send mine. Lots of good suggestions.

Yeah. I guess that's what these lists are all about, it's good to see members watching all sorts of stuff, and even if you don't rate things particularly high in some cases, I can understand your ratings and think they're fair and explain why/why you don't like them. I think it goes to prove that you can't just dismiss certain styles of cinema and depending on you and the film, there's lots of good stuff to be found, that's why I like these forums :p

Very true; mostly this year I have been blindly watching movies from the various lists, and other member's recommendations. The result is that I have seen a higher percentage of movies I have enjoyed, as opposed to as if I was just watching from my own to see list, as normal.

I found this absolutely fascinating.Such an amazing and well told character study of a delusional and isolated middle-aged man. Would certainly be high up on my 60's list if we were to start one.

By the way, has anyone any other recommendations for me based on my liking of this film?
I'm so glad many people have been watching this gem lately. It's such a brilliant film. I nominated it for the MoFo HoF!
Maybe the film Seconds (1966) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060955/?ref_=nv_sr_5) would be something you'd also enjoy.

It shares certain similar themes, but it presents them in a VERY different way. I personally enjoyed it, maybe you would too. ;)
Just like you, I'd also like some other recommendations based on my love of The Swimmer (if someone had any)!
Similar in theme to The Swimmer:
The Prisoner of Second Avenue
Box of Moon Light
All Night Long (81)
Twice in a Lifetime
Middle Age Crazy
Death of a Salesman (51 & 85)
The Fisher King
The Gunslinger45

Yes, this is a very good film. If you haven't already done so I can strongly recommend you give Festen (The celebration) your consideration. It's a dogme classic, which might be a little off-putting at first; it has the feel of a home video, though in my opinion that gives it an edge. It's by the same director, Thomas Vinterberg, and deals with similar themes.

Chef - 2014
This was an impromtu visit to the movie theater for this one. Meet some friends out for drinks that were going to see X-Man and I've never been into X-Men so I went with a married couple to see this movie. Now this is a rarity for me, I sorta went into this movie without any prior knowledge of the cast or what it was about. I had heard of the project but never got into the details of it. Kind of nice for a change.
I have enjoyed some of Favreau's previous directing efforts (Iron Man & Elf). I wish I could scrub Cowboys & Aliens from my memory but needless to say I went into it with decent expectations knowing Favreau was behind the lens. I found it to be really entertaining and in a way up lifting. The moral of the movie is if you are not happy then do something to change it. Now he has a lot of help in the movie to get there, maybe to an extent unrealistically, but the message gets through. Favreau is a pretty convincing chef and carries the film well. WARNING: The food in this movie will make your mouth water, so I'd go in with your appetite clinched.
Some things I didn't enjoy however is this all-star cast that was underutilized. I know they are all buddies of Favreau trying to help him but damn I wanted to see more of them. They are nothing more then extended cameos. Scar Jo's character is the most egregious to me. Her character in all intensive purposes is rather pointless. Hoffman's character while important is too brief. RDJ's appearance is a cameo although his is the best one. I love me some Bobby Cannavale but he was sorely underutilized. Then my other beef with the film is some of the scenes felt like fillers. I could feel the actors acting instead of being the character and that was cringe worthy to me. Not enough to ruin the film thou.
All in all it is a fun film. I'd probably have waited to see it on Red Box but I wasn't unhappy I paid to see it in theaters. It has a generic feel to it but it is fresh enough to keep you entertained. Also it kinda reminds me of Ratatouille.
I'd give it in between a 2.5 and a 3 out of 5. 2/5 feels too low but 3 feels to high.

Well, i was looking for a nice movie featuring Rene Russo, and found this one, which also happens to feature, among others, Clint Eastwood. That's a standard 90s crime/thriller, with that kind of predictalbe plot, but that's a enjoyable movie, after all. I just wished miss Russo had a bigger role, but that's ok. The upsides are the cast and soundtrack by Morricone.
(btw, is there a good movie in which Rene Russo plays the lead, or something like that?)

Laverc, have you seen the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo? She is the second lead but does a great job as the detective hunting down whom she assumes is a master art thief. Denis Leary, Ben Gazzara, and Faye Dunaway also star. But Russo is the most memorable thing in the movie for me, and not just because she loses major articles of clothing in the flick. :)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
http://scifimafia.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/movies-spiderman-poster.jpg
I'd heard a lot of negative talk about this movie, but I went by my old way of choosing a movie, which is simple for me....if it looks good and I think I'll like it, it usually turns out that way.
The main thing in the the thumbs-down category I'd heard was that there was too many villains, and that the movie was overstuffed with them. Sorry, not exactly the case. I don't think what I'm going to say is a spoiler, but I will say that Electro is the main villain in the film. The movie does have two other bad guys but they are near the end of the film and have about five minutes apiece. Besides Electro, the movie mainly deals with the continuing relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy and Peter's guilt over the promise he made to Gwen's father in the first film. This part of the film is especially well done.
There is a surprise for Marvel fans about three minutes into the credits that was a great surprise to me. It's very well worth waiting for.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides: 6 out of 10
I thought this was an improvement over Pirates 2 and 3 since it did away with all of the over-the-top GCI and overly convoluted plot elements, and put the focus back on the actual pirates. I'm also glad that they restored Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to bloodthirsty villain status, seeing as they destroyed his character in Pirates 3 and turned him into a lovable lout instead of the cutthroat he was intended to be in the first film.
Overall though the film was disappointing - the plot didn't feel like it went anywhere or knew what it was trying to accomplish, and ended up being forgettable. Overall it was a decent but fairly bland adventure, not as ridiculous as the previous sequels, but still nowhere as good as the first film.

I haven't seen this film in a very long time (2007) and I forgot how great it was. Im a fan of Tommi Eronen and his performance was great. AJ Annila is a great Finnish director. His other film, Sauna, is one of my top 10 listed here. Jadesoturi is the first Finnish/Chinese produced film. It is based off the Kalevala, a Finnish myth. It has a great mixture of drama and martial arts. I'm glad I finally got to re-watch it. One of my favorite songs is from the soundtrack and it was because of the bands listed on the soundtrack that I got interested in this film which lead to my love of Nordic cinema and music.

Killjoy 3 - I always watch Full Moon Features with stunted expectations, I love the films, and it's difficult to describe why. Charles Band reminds me of when I joke around with friends, we make these really stupid inside jokes and stories, the difference is that Charles Band makes a movie about his. To be fair, some of his ideas don't actually seem too bad on paper. He has a lot of interesting and unique ideas, it's just that he has a six dollar budget and this strange desire to go out of his way to make his movies come off as cheesy. In the first two Killjoys, it had a largely black cast. And in-order to emphasize this, rap music played in the background of a lot of the dialogue.
Offensive, but for a lot of his movies, it can be argued that any race or ethnicity involved is being smeared just by being in the movie. They're all the riveting story of a porno without the porn!
This one actually wasn't too cheesy, or well, it was, but in a different way, it reminded me of the bad A Nightmare on Elm Streets. Ones like Freddy's Dead where they had to use 3D glasses to kill him. That ****. Yeah. However, there were still funny moments with Robert Englund. It's like that. It's cheesy, but there's fun to be had. My favorite Full Moon movie so far.

This movie entertained me with a capable cast, this movie is of a much higher standard than one of those horror b-movies that I watch so much, and I was entertained. It really messed itself up towards the end though, it became incoherent madness! However, the "twist" was surprising, but it didn't really save the last couple minutes. Other-wise, I liked it. :)

So much upsides on this one: there are competent performances, a functional plot feat. a subplot, a grey and grim atmosphere that refers to Blade Runner, and so on... Essence wise, the film addresses one's messed up mind obsessed by creed and violence, and its brutal consequences. While such stuff may not sound new, the approach turns it into a distinct and worthwile crime thriller.

One of the great things about Scandinavian films is that some of them have a mixture of mythology with the story of suspense or drama. "Syvälle salattu" aka "Body of Water" is no exception and its because of that mixture that makes films like this so great. I haven't seen this film in a while and it was enjoyable to watch it again. I feel there was a lot of solid performances by the actors.

RED 2 (2013)
http://stuckintraffic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/red-2-12.jpg
Fun sequel that is every bit as enjoyable as the first film. The supporting cast really take the film, such as Mary-Louise Parker as Bruce Willis' wife, craving adventure, much to Bruce's chagrin; John Malkovich as Bruce's friend, whose paranoia about the bad guys coming for them is well-founded; Byung-hun Lee, who is after Willis, and doesn't need a gun to destroy everything in his path; and Anthony Hopkins as someone who has been kept under wraps for a very special reason. Not to say that Helen Mirren, Brian Cox, Neal McDonough, Catherine Zeta Jones, and David Thewlis aren't fine in their roles---they are, but the actors I mentioned first take the cake.
It is an action flick, but it's very funny all the way through. I liked it so much I'm hoping for a third film. Recommended, but see the first one to get into the characters.

caught a glimpse of some good ideas.. although one thing i noticed is that, in X Men First Class, Magneto was central and even tho i had never cared much for X-Men in general, i really liked Fassbender's character in that one. yet in Days of Future Past, Fassbender's Magneto seemed much more two-dimensional and like a typical a-hole. i guess the Magneto character definitely took a back seat to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in this flick, as well as McAvoy's Charles Xavier.
liked it overall

Le Cercle Rouge (1970)
http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1ymet5lWL1qfqdmq.gif
An absolutely fantastic motion picture! It's directed with a superb eye for detail and an even better eye for coolness by the great Jean-Pierre Melville (I also enjoyed his The Samouraï a lot). Despite this truly being a "director's film", I've also discovered one of my new favorite charismatic actors! I already watched him in Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources and liked him there, but in this film he is THE MAN! I'm talking of course about Yves Montand. He plays an alcoholic ex-cop who is a master at handling guns. He doesn't have the biggest role in this film, but everytime he appears on screen, his tons of charisma shine through. I'll definitely watch some of his other praised pictures in the near future.
He's not the only one who's great in this of course. The whole cast does a brilliant job!
All in all, it's the style and the sophisticated atmosphere that make this film such a masterpiece. I beg you people, see this before you send in your '70s list! This is one of those films that has to be seen by every fan of cinema. This is filmmaking at its best!
Magnificent movie!

Im glad you enjoyed it! I was telling Mr Minio that I have far more than my absolute top 10 films and I wish I was able to add more to my profile because there are so many more great films out there that are unseen.
By the way, if you enjoy reading, you can get the book "Priest of Evil" thru Amazon in English. However, as always, there is a difference in the story line.
Yes, i really liked it, and i've also far more than 10 favorites (they wouldn't fit in that small box, but that's ok lol). Yes i like to read a lot, but unfortunately i can't get import stuff now (im from Brasil), but i'm grateful for this recomendation as well, and may be getting a copy in the future.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2008/10/19/close10a.jpg
This was the first time I watched this classic (I have it on DVD and watched it together with my oldest sister) and I really enjoyed it. It's not your typical narrative film. It's more like a process of a certain important situation, an important meeting actually.
This film is about forming commitments in stead of searching for conflicts. Spielberg plays with his audiences by keeping them in the dark for a very long time. We don't know what's exactly happening and we don't know what the results will be. It makes everything all the more intriguing and fascinating.
The special effects are also mind blowing, especially for its time. It looked really beautiful on my TV in the middle of the dark living room. This is one of those films that I'd really like to watch in the theater one day.
In my opinion, this is one of Spielberg's best films. Give it a watch for the '70s list if you still haven't seen it yet! It's a wonderful movie experience. ;)

The Heat (2013) 3
I always like Sandra Bullock, and I thought Melissa McCarthy redeemed herself here after an annoying performance in Identity Thief. Together, I thought they made a fantastic team in an above average comedy, with plenty of laughs. On the downside, it goes on a little long for a comedy at about 2 hours, and goes for a little too much action and drama in the last third. Most of the movie is very entertaining though.

Ain't them Bodies Saints (2013) 2.5
My biggest worry was that this would be a bore. It is slow paced, but it doesn't waste time getting to the point or have overlong needless scenes. Most of the movie has a nice intensity about it, and at only 96 minutes long, it makes for a pretty tight movie. The performances are all pretty good, although I wasn't blown away by Casey Affleck in this, and he's an actor I usually like. I liked, it but my biggest problem with it is that I won't remember it.

I was worried that you'd hate it, since I praised it. But even though I really enjoyed it, I still only gave it a 3.5. Like you basically said, it's a slight movie, and although I was really into it while I was watching it, the movie is already fading from my memory. For a debut feature, though, I think it's a very good movie. The director appears to be a promising talent.

I'm usually a character and story guy, but what got me with this was how stunningly beautiful this movie is. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/55/Maleficent_poster.jpg
Not a bad film, but I must say I was disappointed. While the film is very nice to look at for the most part, there are a lot of things about this movie that fell short of my expectations. While I knew this was going to be a re-imagining of the classic Disney movie, and that they were going to try to do for Maleficent what Wicked did for the Wicked Witch of the West; I knew there where going to be changes. Problem is a lot of those changes were terrible.
First of I did not like the fact that Maleficent's turn toward hate and revenge was essentially because of being betrayed by a man. I liked even less that it was King Stephan, Aurora's father, who was here betrayer and now the antagonist. And I HATED what they did to the three good fairies. Thankfully they were good enough to give them different names then what they had in the classic animated film. Because they sure as hell were not Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. The fairies in the film were idiotic, stupid, terrible guardians, and when they are in their fairy form are down right ugly to look at. And even though I freely admit that Princess Aurora was pretty dull in the 1959 cartoon, somehow they casted an even duller actress to play her in live action. And Prince Phillip once the brave hero now has even less lines and no purpose to be in the film aside from being a decoy for a future plot point. Finally there is a very predictable twist that Frozen did WAY better.
But lets talk about the film's saving grace, which is Angelina Jolie as Maleficent. This woman turns what could have been a bad film into something worth the price of admission. Let's face it the script is not a strong one and needed some rewrites. But Jolie's performance turns a film that should be mediocre into something passable. Now some of her motivations for he interactions with Princess Aurora are questionable and down right boggle the mind. But she and Aurora do have a legitimate chemistry and does lend for a few laughs. One such laugh in particular where Maleficent is mistaken by Aurora to be something COMPLETELY different then what she actually is. Jolie's reaction is hilarious. There are also a few decent battle scenes and they did have the raven character expanded upon, but let's face it the original Sleeping Beauty is the far better film. Maleficent is a far better character when she is evil for evil's sake. But that being said this film was still worth seeing for Jolie's performance alone.

Don't you think "perfect" deserves a 10?
I have seen an extremely a lot of films in my life. Im 47 years old and love cinema.... and I have never seen a film that just "completely floors me" when I walk out of the theatre or finish watching dvd, stream or whatever... but no matter what.. each film, no matter how great many think it is, there is always some flaw or something could have been done better.
The Experiment 4/5: Forest Whitaker absolutely owned this character, I literally wanted to hit him.
I'm sure I enjoy movies in general and my favorite movies as much as anybody, but I can't get that through to some people. Giving movies a more moderate rating is nothing deserving of pity, just as giving movies all 8, 9 or 10 is nothing deserving of contentment. My ratings don't mean I concentrate on the faults. True, no movie is perfect, but the absolute best or favorite ones anybody has seen deserve a 10 or 5. Otherwise the rating system has no meaning. However, it also has no meaning if almost every film you've ever seen is a 7 (3.5) or higher. There are all the numbers available from 0 to 10 for a reason, but most people seem to think 3-6 don't exist. And believe it or not, it doesn't matter what kind of films (country, age, genre) you watch either. Nobody only watches great films. Films are considered great by consensus, not by an individual. Otherwise you could just take my word for it when I say it's great, just like I can take yours. ;) I'm going to stop now before I get a response that "my movies taste better to me than yours do!" :D

I do agree with you Mark. But I think what happens with a lot of members that are similar to me is we deliberately seek out films that 'are supposed to be good', so ratings are naturally going to be higher. If we were to sit down and rate them all from 0-10 on what we've seen, we'd be giving 2.5s to films that we still think are really good, but there's no point as we know there are films of lower quality out there that can fill up that end of the ratings scale.
You've seen all sorts of films, watch whatever's on TV, and can accurately pinpoint where on the scale of 0-10 everything sits, if I was washing all sorts of movies that I didn't necceseraily seek out, whatever is on TV or that, I would give a lot of lower ratings.
Plus there's plenty of films that I will never see, that nobody will ever see, because they don't get distributed via TV/cinemas as they simply aren't good enough, if you factored in all these films, so you had seen them all hypothetically speaking, you'd have sh*t load more rated 0-5, so if you are trying to make it a level playing field, you'd naturally have to up the ratings of the other films you'd already seen that are better.
I'm not coming down on people giving a lot of high ratings. Believe it or not I can remember giving the "great" movies mostly super high ratings when I started my ratings 40 years ago. I just would like to see some kind of consistency or perhaps growth in defining a person's personal rating system, but I'm undouubtedly being too impatient about it because I don't know how long I'll be around and know it on this Earth. I expect everyone to have their own ratings, but after I'm exposed to a lot of them, I should hope to see what they're basing their ratings on. I know some people don't use ratings that seriously, and as far as the bell curve goes, it's not that I personally use it, I just think it's good to remember when using a system that most do fall toward the middle, rather than the edges. All of this probably has more to do with my mortality than you guys' ratings I just seem to have to bring this topic up periodically, so if it has meaning or helps somebody, that's good. No personal attacks should be found within. :)
Mr. Nobody 3.5/5: Not sure what I was expecting, but it didn't really have much of an effect. Worth a view if you've nothing else going on.

Ok, hold up! Isn't this supposed to be about personal preference on how you rate a film? Just because someone doesn't agree with anyone on something doesn't make them wrong. Everyone enjoys different genres and views things differently. Example, Swan didn't care for "A Serbian Film" but I enjoyed it. Why? Because our taste in Extreme Cinema is different and I respect his opinion (Sorry Swan, I hope you don't mind me using you as an example). If someone gave a film, that I truly enjoy, a bad rating, I'm okay with that. No passing judgement. But it seems that because I give a harsher rating on films, then I am criticized for that. One of my favorite English speaking films is "Kingdom of Heaven", it gets a 7.75 from me but I know many people who do not like it. Its all personal choice and well, it takes more to please my visual senses, in my opinion.
I thought this forum was to discuss, encourage and to recommend cinema to each other without criticism or judgement. Or at least, I'm sure that is what the creator of the forum was hoping for!

Using the popcorn rating system, there are 11 possible ratings to be had. In theory, doesn't that mean that each movie one rates would have a 1 in 11 chance to match each rating? And also, if you're deliberately trying to watch great films, wouldn't the odds of a high rating go up? I would say I give about 1 in 40 movies watched 5. So according to my calculations, I'm being too strict. Am I just looking at this with the mindset of a former gambler, or does this make sense?
The high and low ends have less possibilities than the middle in my experience. It's not a question of odds. But I'll admit that my 4 is a GREAT movie. It's just that those I rate higher have more personal meaning for me. :)

@MovieGal: There's nothing wrong with your way of rating films, but I just thought it was a little odd that you don't even give your favorite movie of all time more than a 9 (especially since you've seen so many films in your life). That's all. ;)
I am probably not strict enough with my ratings for instance, but I just post the scores I give movies on My IMDb account (http://www.imdb.com/user/ur26521153/?ref_=nv_usr_prof_0). Others also pointed out already that some people are exclusively watching films that look interesting to them and that's another reason why certain members give such high ratings all the time, I think (I also tend to only post the good ones).

Great film! The plot gets pretty complex and I still have some questions after the ending, but all in all it's a wonderful piece of dark, atmospheric, neo-noir cinema. There's an intriguing and cleverly misleading plot, the characters are all mysterious and interesting and I love the locations Arthur Penn takes us to! This is another '70s film that becomes a contender for my list!

A good straightforward story covered with a huge massacre., simple as that. It's raw and very well done, and the killings (usually basic and varied), are virtually nonstop, leaving us just a brief pause for breathing near the beginning. This movie has everything that could please those about horror at the core, and is also a good proof that the genre keeps yielding. rating_4_5

Honestly, I don't care if someone gives a lot of high ratings. I do because I watch good movies. Hell, I wouldn't mind if someone gave everything a rating_5. In fact, I would want to be that person. I wish I could love every movie I see. That's the best kind of movie fan.

Well thank you for pointing that out and solving my question of what "The Hunt" really means.
Wow, you have seen so many of Mads Mikkelsen's movies! It's a pity that except for The Hunt I haven't seen any more of his movies. But I have heard of the well-known TV series: Hannibal. After watching its trailer, I found Hannibal very intriguing. However, do you think Hannibal can be a bit repulsive sometimes due to its bloody and violent scenes?

A good straightforward story covered with a huge massacre., simple as that. It's raw and very well done, and the killings (usually basic and varied), are virtually nonstop, leaving us just a brief pause for breathing near the beginning. This movie has everything that could please those about horror at the core, and is also a good proof that the genre keeps yielding. rating_4_5

The Mirror (1975) 2
I appreciated the beauty in this, and I can see that there's plenty of emotional power to be had. Foreign language drama is tough for me though. To feel the emotion, I need to be invested in the characters; to be invested in the characters, I need to be able to relate to them. My rating reflects not what I think the quality of the film is, but rather what it did for me personally. I wish I got more out of it because there's obviously something there. If I ever decide to watch it again, I think there's the potential that it could be more effective for me.

I do watch what I consider good to great movies. My movie buddy suggests films to me to watch with him and if it has a lower than 5.5 rating on imdb, I rarely take that chance. I enjoy art type films and even unknown dramas and such but it has to be to my taste. There are very very few films out there I will take a chance on. To me, its like buying a book, if I put it down after the first chapter, I wasted my money and time.

I don't really know all of the words for how I watch to describe this movie. I mean, I liked it. I was certainly entertained by it, but I approach it with a certain awe and wonder. The narrative as a whole is jumbled and contorted, but it's beautifully entertaining with a character that is both absolutely terrible and helplessly wonderful. The script appeared to call for somebody emotionless, and Jack Nicholson decided to give us someone with depth. He's both good and bad, and that really makes it easy to watch the character on the screen. About Schmidt is a very enjoyable movie in that respect.

I always remember saying for a long time that in the BTTF series number two was my favourite of the three. I am yet to watch number three (probably tomorrow night to keep in line) but I actually felt that after all these years number two was a let down. I don't know why I just didn't enjoy it as much as I remembered. Never the less a good film.

Saying any film is "under the radar" will almost always get you in trouble because people may have seen it a lot and it never made it big from one persons perspective. It got a very respectable 6.9 on IMDb and it has a wonderful cast, a tight script and great line delivery. I believe it was also one of the first John Travolta films I saw and also one of his best. It is not as good as Pulp Fiction or Swordfish but I still think he was very good in it.

I wasn't expecting much from this low budget 85 minute movie. But it was decent enough viewing for me at the end of a weekend. Darkly comic, grisly in parts with a interwoven story plot reminiscent of a light hearted "crash" (Haggis). Not bad for an hour and a half's entertainment. 6/10

The book is excellent. I don't typically read non-fiction, but Capote writes beautifully. Not only does he get into the head of the killers, but he also has a way of withholding significant details in the case until near the end, maximizing the suspense. I like the film, too, but the book is superior.

Think i watched around half of Sherilyn Fenn's filmography and, man, i couldn't really say much of it is great, so that kinda surprises me when i found now and then some good ones among her movies i hadn't seem. About this one, there's a interesting plot with a good twisting, and miss Sherilyn delivers some considerable emotional edges. A zombie drama! The movie's production is simple but well done, and it features some real lousy moments. I liked it for the original approach (with its metaphorical sides) and the great performance of the lead actress. Only things they could have improved are the somewhat irrelevant soundtrack and the ending.

The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) 2.5
I enjoyed it the whole way through; I just wasn't all that into it. For the first half, I just felt like I was watching a good movie, which is what I was hoping for. The second half, I started to feel more like I was watching a cartoon. I know next to nothing about animation, but it looked pretty good to me. Overall, I feel pretty good after watching my first Japanese animation, and I like my chances of enjoying more in the near future.
I might suggest Ghost in the Shell, it will certainly not feel like a cartoon at any point. Though one might find it boring because it doesn't have any comedy and almost no drama.

In Passion, De Palma ably shows how to play his old tricks on the screen and still provide something that somehow feels fresh. The plot has subtle twists, nothing too hard to be deduced, but plays very efficiently with the apprehension of those who are watching it. It's also worthwhile to mention Rapace's (remarkable) performance, which reinforces why she's been working with some of the Hollywood masters.

And so the trilogy comes to a close. And there is still no doubt in my mind it belongs with the best trilogies that have come out. In my BTTF2 mini review I mentioned that it was always my favourite but for some reason that had changed. What has not change for me in number three is the level of cheese and corny in it. I really really REALLY wish Clara had not been involved. I understand they wanted to bring something new to the table but to me Clara made the Doc Brown character look weak and the one thing that should not be done is that.
Still it was not bad and better than I remember.

I think this one was a little overhyped. The main cast (Seth, Devon and "McLovin") did some pretty funny performances, but about half of the film focused on the hijinks with the two cops, who weren't very funny, just annoying - and were out-of-proportionally weird (weirder and more obnoxious than "Super Troopers") even compared to the other characters in the film.
Not the worst comedy flick in the world, but overrated.

I usually struggle with slow foreign language films, especially long ones, but my first Kurosawa was a big exception. It works as an adventure, but it's the unlikely story of friendship that makes it really stand out. The two main characters are very lovable, and it didn't take me long to care about them. I thought this was a beautiful and touching movie.

I dont think it has as high a profile as Five Easy Pieces but i actually preferred this to it. Nicholson and Dern make a brilliant partnership, in fact i think Dern outshines Nicholson in this, which is fairly hard to do considering they share pretty much the same screentime. Kudos to Ellen Burstyn too, she's damn good. For those that havnt seen it yet for the 70's list id say give it a go, its criminally underrrated.

It's not a great film by any means buts it's a lot of fun and really cool. I didn't think it was one of Ryan O'Neal's best performances but the character is supposed to be stiff, much like Gosling in the recent version. Despite the fact that it was a little dark during certain parts, which I really liked, it made me laugh out loud numerous times. And Jason Schwartzman played Max so perfectly.

Auntie Mame (1958)
http://themotionpictures.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/03.jpg
First time seeing this popular movie, based on the popular play, based on the popular book, and which was remade later as a musical movie with Lucille Ball. You get the picture. This one is no musical, just a fun comedy with a little drama.
The great Rosalind Russell is perfect as the Auntie Mame of the title. She's a well-to-do socialite who is suddenly caring for her late brother's son. She teaches him the ways of her world in the big city. She falls on hard times during the Great Depression, marries well to a good man, becomes rich again, all the while coming up against prejudiced people whom she shows up. She also has some conflict with her now-grown nephew but all is solved by the end. Just one of those feel-good, don't worry about anything movies. It's also a feast for the eyeballs, particularly Mame's apartment, which is huge, and which changes decor every time the camera goes through her door. All part of the fun.

Good film. Glad I bought it. Certainly got the rewatch factor about it, but only in that you could watch it 2 or 3 times a year.
It's just not the ground breaking marvel of a masterpiece it was made out to be.
Sadly has a lot of contrived points and just far too many slaps to the face when it comes to the danger.
The film felt like one long lesson in stuff-going-wrong and it got a little tiresome. I actually found myself looking at the timer on the DVD player and was thinking "Yep, still got at least 30 more things to go wrong before the credits role"
I mean, she gets out of Situation 1... ends up here at Point 2... only one thing can go wrong at Point 2, and it does... gets out of that situation and ends up at Point 3... the only thing that can go wrong here is *insert disaster* and within 3 seconds it happens... and so on... and so on... and so on... and so on... again... and again...
Does have some extremely good scenes mixed in though and I liked the realistic edge they gave it by having no sound in space. The effects were stunning.
Sandra Bullock has had way too much plastic surgery though to be believable as an Astronaut... her nose and eyes look unbelievably contorted.
I noticed that about her in the other film she made recently, The Heat. Only seen the trailers but her face is paralysed in every one I've seen.
She's had her boobs done as well.
I'd rate it about 80%, maybe less... 4

So are we judging movies now based on an actor/actresses's plastic surgery and whether or not their boobs are real?

It removed me from the experience.
Someone who can't portray any emotion apart from a blank look on their face... isn't a good choice for this kind of film.

Well, if we're going that route, I'll say that you should've seen her ass in IMAX-3D. Gravity hasn't effected those buns!
I think Sandra Bullock looks great, and I don't think there's anything wrong with her ability to emote. Her performance in Gravity was the best of her career, and it was also a very physically demanding role, which is why the Academy awarded her with a much deserved nomination for Best Actress.
Rodent, I love all the negatives and then you saying you could watch it 2 or 3 times a year. It was my favorite movie last year and I couldnt watch it that much. I dont watch my all time favorites that much.

I need to re watch this too, I liked it a lot when I first saw it a while ago. La Grande Illusion is good and pretty similar in its writing, you can definitely tell it's from the same director, although it's kind of a prison escape film too, I would recommend it.

Hmmm. It's a bit hit and miss this. Started slowly, had a great few scenes in the middle with quite a bit of tension (even if you do kind of know the fate of the other protagonist) and then just drifts off into a rather nonchelant, nondescript ending. It's understandably bare, grim and cheaply shot for the budget. But I was a little disappointed at the ending. 6/10
Spoiler:
However, having said that I suppose it is more terrifying knowing he's still out there.rather than just have a normal "got him" ending.

The wedding scene is amazing. You get a feel for the scope of the family, the importance of godfather himself, our first look at Michael and Kay's relationship. A tremendous amount of exposition in the first half hour. I cant imagine turning it off on a first watch. You must not enjoy a slow burn.

It's not that at all actually. It seems like such an interesting movie and I've been wanting to see it for years. It's just that I knew this counselor back in high school and at one point, he told me it was his favourite movie. Now every time I try to watch it it reminds me of him and I hate him so much, it distracts me from the actual movie. It's actually really stupid and I'm trying to get over it. This is the 5th or 6th time I tried to watch the movie this year.

Day for Night (1973) 3.5
I've been watching a lot of these movies totally blind, not knowing the cast, plot, or even what language it's in. Once I realized there wasn't really going to be a plot developing in this, I just relaxed and started to enjoy it. This is a movie that real movie buffs should like quite a bit. I was always just a guy who liked watching movies, but since joining this forum and trying out a lot more variety in film, I've come a little closer to being a movie buff I think. I'm probably somewhere in the middle. After about 15 minutes, this movie started to remind me a lot of Altman's Nashville, except on a movie set, instead of in Nashville during a political convention. As a movie fan, it was pretty cool watching a kind of behind the scenes look, with the various personal drama of the cast and crew. Overall, I thought it was very interesting and entertaining, and I think a lot of the members here would love this film. Oh yea, Jacqueline Bisset is smoking hot

Star Trek VI: the Undiscovered Country (1991)
was wanting a break from the bloodshed thread, Saw (2004) gave me a headache the other night. so i went with an adventure from Kirk, Spock, Dr McCoy, Scotty, & the rest. didn't think it was as good as the original tv series, or as Wrath of Khan or the Voyage Home. the writing wasn't quite there and the situations weren't quite as compelling. but it was still pretty fun. although... Kim Cattrall as a Vulcan just wasn't working. and i like Kim Cattrall.

I was expecting more of this one, thought it was emotionaly deeper and daring. Also, Eva Green has an average acting range, so she couldn't deliver all the emotion her character needed. Not a bad movie, after all, but that's it.

Doubtless the best one i saw today. Though everything in the movie seems quite simple, the way it develops is really verisimilar and evolving. Surely i'll look for other works by the same director.

Lenny (1974) 3
Interesting biography of comedian Lenny Bruce, played by Dustin Hoffman. I very much enjoyed the first two thirds of this, featuring his rise to stardom and personal life. The last third, featuring his battle with obscenity laws, went downhill a little bit for me. Of course, that was a pretty important piece of his life, and a necessary inclusion in the film; it just didn't work that well for me as far as watching it. This was the 7th great performance I've seen from Hoffman in the 70's after Little Big Man, Kramer vs Kramer, Marathon Man, Straw Dogs, All the President's Men, and Straight Time. He doesn't seem to get the recognition he deserves. As far as director Bob Fosse, I liked this better than All that Jazz, but not as much as Cabaret or Star 80. His movies always have a cool style about them; it's a shame he didn't make more.

The Three Musketeers (2011) ~ 5/10
http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/img2/threemusketeers-firsttrailer-group1.jpg
I was really upset over this film. I thought it would be decent to watch but it was very quirky. I didnt find any of the slow motion scenes very "entertaining". Mads Mikkelsen's character was the only serious character in the movie. I enjoy films and tv shows with Matthew MacFayden, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Milla Jovovich and Orlando Bloom but this was a bit over the top for me. I would have rather watched it as a serious film instead of a silly comedy.
Far From The Madding Crowd (1967) ~ 6.5/10

During the first 5 minutes of this fiilm, all I could think of was, it was just like the BBC mini-series "Tess of D'Urberville". I understand that Thomas Hardy wrote both of the novels but there was so much similarity in the films. The acting was very good. I enjoyed the tragic romance story as well.

I can understand it, MovieGal, and respect what you say. But in my case, i was never really into her real life story, so i could only judge it as a work of fiction. It's a bit like that movie about The Doors (by Oliver Stone), we know only some basic stuff there may be truth, but essentialy, i think it works out terrificaly as a movie (even for me, as a huge fan :D ).

The King of Marvin Gardens (1972) 2.5
Jack Nicholson is my favorite actor and the main reason I enjoyed this film. He gives the most subdued performance I have seen from him. The rest of the cast is also very good, although it's starting to seem like Bruce Dern plays almost the same character over and over. I felt like with a few tweaks, this could've been a great film. Even the sudden shocking ending, something I usually love, just didn't seem to work the way it should have. I thought it was a good movie, but still mostly average.

I enjoyed it a little more than my rating I think, but it's just because I'm such a Nicholson fan. I was just trying to be fair. I haven't seen Nebraska yet but every other time I see Dern, he seems to play a slimy character, except for Silent Running. I still like him though.

I've never been overly fond of Westerns but I think this will go down as one of my favorites. It's also a little long for my liking, but there was always something going on. Nice supporting cast with a few familiar faces; I liked how he made different allies over the course of the movie. It also has some really cool dialogue including the great quote, "Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy".

Play Misty for Me (1971) 3
A little silly at times, but still entertaining, memorable, and relatable. At one time or another, we've all gone and given the wrong girl a poke in the whiskers, and this is what can happen sometimes. I thought it was pretty equal to Fatal Attraction. Extra points for using the great Roberta Flack song, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
