I wanted to take a chance. It was On-Demand, but unfortunately none of the Russian was translated, and the entire thing is only 70 minutes.

I enjoyed it. Not as much as some of my friends. The first half of the film was superb, second half dragged a bit for me.

Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)
http://images.latinpost.com/data/images/full/11981/edge-of-tomorrow.jpg?w=600
Been awhile since I've been on. Caught this on tv last weekend. Nice little popcorn flick, everyone seemed to enjoy it when it came out so I gave it a chance.. I really enjoyed the beginning when he was just realizing he kept repeating the same day. Thought it was really well done with a lot of humor. These are usually not my kind of flicks. Once I see a crazy looking alien I sort of become conscience that I am watching a movie. This movie kept me in the world a little longer than most but no matter how they dress it up the aliens were kind of silly and the reason behind his repeated days was ultimately, to me silly as well. Their strategy was a little flawed to me in the plot but whatever I went with it. It's not a mindless popcorn flick which I give it credit for but it still leans that way. The end sort of wrapped up too neatly for me, when it really shouldn't have, but nitpicks.
Cruise is his solid usual action hero self. Emily Blunt however really brought it. Thought her performance was really convincing. Oh and she is super freaking hot in it, which doesn't hurt in my enjoyment of the film lol. It's pretty much just a 2 person film so not much else to add performance wise. It's a nice little action flick, with some actual effort involved into making it which I appreciate. However I do not see myself revisiting it anytime soon. Maybe down the line in a year or two.
I'd give it a strong 3.5 out of 5.

The Cell: 6/10
it's not bad, but it feels too self indulgent, and superficial. and while the set design and color scheme are quite nice, the focus was extremely soft, perhaps the intention....since it's meant to be a dream of sorts.......but I feel it tarnished all that hard work. however I watched it off of HBO, so perhaps a bluray would have a crisper image.
also, never thought i'd see a pink power ranger naked.
I loved it. My bro kept hassling me to see it and I was like 'Yeah, I hear you, but not the top of my list'. Finally saw it and was blown away. I heart it.

A simple, human story told remarkably well. It's dark, but it never goes all Von Trier, or anything, it's not punishing. Sigurður Sigurjónsson carries every scene he's in, he plays a character that's likable, unlikeable, sympathetic, and so forth. He makes you feel just about every emotion in the book. You never know what the disconnect is between him, and his brother is one hundred percent, but you just feel the baggage they're both carrying every single time these two are together, even when they're not saying a word to one another, which truly is a testament to both of these actors. It's also great looking, it's nice to see a movie that looks so grey that doesn't overdo it, and the scenery has so much scope you feel like it goes on forever. I'll be watching out for Grímur Hákonarson, I anticipate good things.

3.5
http://thefilmexperience.net/storage/2016/krisha-eyesonturkey.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1479963451857
Krisha is a woman in her 60's who has been estranged from her family and been an addict for many years. She appears to be doing better and is looking for another chance. They have her over for Thanksgiving dinner and let her have the responsibility of cooking the turkey. How it will all go is the bi question.
This felt like a horror movie at times with the camera movements and musical score, but it is 100% family drama. It is not a groundbreaking story, but it felt fresh and is a brisk 80 minutes long. I found it to be more intense than emotional, and I think most people will be able to relate to at least some of the characters. I wouldn't quite call it a powerhouse of a movie but it was a riveting watch.
Glad you liked it. Definitely agree with the horror movie feel with the weird sound effects and growing tension.

I enjoyed it, Little Sunny was superb. A fantastic story but I thought it lulled a slight bit.
He was amazing!
I agree it does lull but I didnt mind that. I just thought it was such a beautifully put together movie. Cinematography was so beautiful. (ssshhh - might have cried).
Why is Dev nominated for best supporting actor? I think he should have got nom'd best actor and Sunny best supporting.
Saw Havenhurst last night. Pretty decent horror/thriller. A few too many jump scares for my liking but otherwise solid entertainment, and I;m not even a huge fan of Julie Benz. Worth a few popcorn cups on a rainy saturday night.

Get Out

White people be crazy, am I right?
Jordan Peele makes his directorial debut with this horror thriller. With Get Out, Peele takes his creative use of comedic timing and transfers that to horror. Both genres are all about timing, one tries to make you laugh, the other tries to make you scared. Get Out excels at both and I'd love to see what Peele does with the genre, should he stick to it.
Chris and Rose are going up to her parents place for the weekend. He's concerned that they are white privilege and he's just some black guy dating their daughter. She assures him that they are not racist and totally down to earth. When they arrive, something seems off. Dean, her father, tries to act cool and hip while her mother wants to hypnotize Chris into quitting smoking, a disgusting habit she hates. The only other two black people around are servants and don't seem all quite right.
This Guess Who's Coming To Dinner update spins the narrative around and takes the viewer on a wild ride where race is a comically and terrifying issue front and centre. Peele manages to craft a tight thriller where every little thing you hear characters say, might have different meanings later on. It's tightly written and well directed, it's no surprise this film is scoring high on rottentomatoes.
The cast works well together, blending casual terror into their performances. Whitford and Keener are the parents and if the film had one weak spot, I'd have to say it belongs to Keener. She seems uninterested in the role or maybe just bored. Whitford on the other hand seems to be having a lot of fun. The satire in the script is brought alive on screen from the cast.
You'll question what's really going on here and Peele reveals just enough at the right times. He manages to blend Night of the Living Dead, The Stepford Wives and numerous other films extremely well together. The explosive third act is tense and I wasn't ever really sure how it was going to end. Which is a rarity in films these days

I keep seeing people saying genuinely good things about Get Out, but I have a hard time believing it, because I died laughing at the supposedly serious elements of the trailer every time I saw it in theatres. Then again, the same thing happened with the trailer for Split, and that turned out to be much better than what I was expecting.

Huge fan of Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer I remember getting to watch this film when I was doing a Btec in Audio Visual in order to get the qualifications to qualify for studing for a B.A degree. Fell in love with the movie and had a big impact on me at the time. While I do not get scared of horror movies the demonstration of how easy it would be for someone with ill intent to just randomly kill you without you standing any chance was kind of shocking.

Since I'm studying Psychology things like that don't shock me but that's precisely why I watched the movie, to see if it was another exagerated demonstration of a psychopath or a mental disorder but actually I think it portrayed very well, very simplistic and authentic.

My Darling Clementine - 4-
https://s14.postimg.org/rkyfjyjxt/clement.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/l79cgpf1p/)
This was my fifth John Ford film; i loved Stagecoach and How Green Was My Valley, i had a mixed reaction to She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and i didn't like The Searchers, i'd like to see it again however. Wasn't aware going in that this was a Wyatt Earp film. I know a decent amount about Wyatt and how he was supposed to be so Henry Fonda was a little jarring in the role at first. I dunno he's just not intimidating enough for the picture i have of Wyatt, but he's such a good actor i quickly got over it. One thing i did love was the portrayal of Doc Holliday. Not necessarily his personality but the fact that he was just as if not more feared than Wyatt; from the majority of accounts i've read he had a bigger reputation than Wyatt and i don't like that he's often relegated to generic partner of Wyatt. The two of them worked really well together, loved the tension during their first meeting with the bar going completely silent; everyone holding their breath knowing that the two most dangerous men in this town could very well not get along then when it seems that they do the music starts playing, etc, basically the full atmosphere instantly returns to the bar. I'm not very familiar with Vitor Mature but i thought he did an excellent job, he brought a commanding, menacing, presence to his role that went perfectly with the more pleasant Wyatt.
Was a bit surprised by how long it took for Clementine to be introduced. Cathy Downs was my only problem with the film; she had zero personality, she came across really cold; at times she may have well been holding the script reading her lines from it. Not a good performance at all, if she was played by someone else i'd have probably given this .5 more at least. Linda Darnell was much better. This wasn't a major problem though as despite the title Clementine actually isn't in it that much. I liked Brennan too, again he wasn't in it that much but i liked seeing him as the villain since the only other things i've seen him in is Red River where he is probably the most likable character in the film. The film did a really good job of juggling multiple small subplots then connecting them all at the end which is why some of these characters weren't in it alot. The Gunfight At The OK Corral was well done, it was an exaggeration of what really happened of course but it had to be or it would've been a really quick dull scene. While not hilarious there was some decent humour both intentional and unintentional. I genuinelly really cracked up when Wyatt dragged Chihuahua outside the bar and she said "Hey, listen this is Doc Holiday's town and when he comes back...." *slap*, it was such a wtf moment; she didn't even begin to finish her sentence it honestly took me by surprise haha. The film looked amazing. Early on its visuals caught my attention during the scene Wyatt, Virgil, etc were riding towards Tombstone with dark clouds in the sky passing through some gorgeous scenery. It kept up that high standard throughout with plenty of fantastic cinematography and camerawork.
Really great film. Out of the small amount i've seen this would get my vote for best introduction to black and white westerns.

American Gangster (2007)
Finally got around to seeing this movie and was really pleased with it. Ridley Scott solidly directs this fine crime movie with Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe as two sides of the crime and law coin. Washington, as Frank Lucas, takes over when his crime boss (Clarence Williams III) passes away, and quickly rises as the kingpin drug pusher in Harlem. Crowe plays the honest cop who begins a long investigation with a hand-picked crew of cops to bring Washington to justice. Quite a good movie as Washington plays a fairly ruthless character who can charm one minute and beat the snot of someone the next. Crowe is the frustrated but determined cop who has to put up with crooked police constantly mocking him for refusing to keep found stolen money. Sort of a Serpico-type, except without the disguises. Good supporting cast includes Josh Brolin, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ruby Dee in a small role as Frank Lucas' mother (a role which got her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, which I didn't think was really deserved, as her part was so small and she really didn't get to shine), Ted Levine, Puerto Rican goddess Lymari Nadal, Cuba Gooding Jr., John Hawkes, Carla Gugino, and many, many more. At two-and-one-half hours, this is a pretty epic gangster film that never flags. Recommended.

The Secret Life of Pets (2016)
The title and the trailer of this animated flick kind of leads you to believe that it's all about what pets do when their owners are away. Well, that does happen, but it's not just that. There's an adventure story going on here also, as two dogs quickly find they don't like sharing their owner, get lost in the big city, and get caught up with a gang of vicious "unwanted pets" who live in the sewers of New York City. The leader of the gang is a cute, but very deadly white bunny. I've seen this type of "animals out of their element going through an adventure" type of movie before and this one goes through the same paces but is still entertaining due to good animation and nice voice-work. Fun stuff.

I was actually disappointed in this movie. You may say, Cricket, how can you rate it so highly if you were disappointed? There are two reasons for that. My expectations are one reason; I was hoping for a major new favorite. The second reason is that because I have such an affinity for movies set in and around Boston, I put them on a higher pedestal. I know all the locations and streets and the types of people, and that's something I enjoy watching. In essence, I feel that I am overrating it. I even love Blown Away, viewed my many people as a mediocre film. I do think this was a very good film, but I think You Can Count On Me from the same director blows it away. I thought Casey Affleck's performance was maybe the best of the year. This did not surprise me as he's an actor I already think highly of. I also thought the kid was great and that Michelle Williams and Kyle Chandler had great moments. Thankfully, those are the four major performances because I thought everyone else was average to weak. I thought there were meaningless scenes in the movie that could have been shortened or eliminated all together. There were also some terrific scenes, but for the most part, I thought a lot of it could have been done better. I thought the movie had a little humor to it, and that was a surprise. I did not like the musical score. I hope it doesn't win the best picture Oscar because I don't think it deserves it. Even with my complaints, I very much enjoyed watching it once.

The Wrestler (2008) 3 It is Mickey Rourke's performance I liked the most about this film. He was so convincing like he wasn't even playing the character. It was because the parallel between Mickey's real life and life of the character he played.
I rated it only 3 out of 5 because of the film's destructive message. He was simply so stubborn and not able to change his life destroying his relationships with his daughter and his possible girlfriend. He was on a good way to make it all better and destroyed everything again. Not even heart attack made him to change his life. You can do the professional sports to a certain age, you can party to a certain age, but then you have to move on and take a responsibility. After his daughter told him she doesn't want to see him any more, I was so hoping he's gonna get a haircut and change his life. But, zero.

The Fourth Kind 6/10. I don't care much for these alien abduction movies. Half the movie is the shaky-cam "film footage", the other is a "re-enactment" - I would've rather they had one or the other and not flipped between them. Will Patton plays the sheriff and he is so intense and rigid I expected him to slap somebody at any (and every) moment. It's like Signs meets the Exorcist.

I heard a few mixed things about this movie and how many movies it was crossed with. I was actually mesmerized by this movie, I was so intrigued in the lore and human societies reaction. I will say though that the ending was a bit anti-climatic but that still didn't really take much away from the movie. I dont think it will win an oscar but it certainly may be overlooked by other categories. The actors did well especially Amy Adams I thought was a massive standout. I did actually think after I watched it if I would rewatch and though maybe 6 months to a year I may but that it not that it is bad but I feel it will take a while to absorb. Overall I really enjoyed this film and thought it was a fresh look on the Alien invasion/contact story.

I really thought I was going to be blown away by this movie. A Ghibli production with zero dialogue that let's the animation alone tell the story? Sign me up! But, it didn't want to amaze. It's quiet, understated, and doesn't care to fill the screen like Miyazaki's work. Which is perfectly fine, I actually have a lot of respect for this movie's modesty, and cutting theatrics to zero percent. However, I really do feel like there was more going on with the story that could've made a lot more impact, with also sticking with that mindset without sacrificing the integrity of the movie. It just kind of comes, and goes. The animation is great, if a bit stiff sometimes with the backgrounds, it doesn't look as "alive" as some of Ghibli's best work. But, seeing a traditionally animated movie on the big screen is always something to be excited about. The score is marvelous, although it seems a bit bigger than what the movie is going for.
All in all, I liked it, but I'm not head over heels like some. It's a nice, relaxing, short experience I wouldn't mind just putting on to fall asleep to, in the best possible way.

How you judge a movie often depends on how critical you want to be of it's flaws. I always try to look at the positives in order to get the best viewing experience possible. This morning, looking back at watching this movie last night, the flaws stand out much more. That doesn't change the fact that I had a total blast while watching it.
What's strange is that I felt like I had seen a lot of this before. I think that's unusual for a movie based on a true story, but the superior Sergeant York with Gary Cooper, also a true story, is very similar. Also, the filmmakers had to know that R. Lee Ermey is going to pop into peoples minds when Vince Vaughn comes in to tear some ass apart. Nobody is going to top Ermey, so even going there is a calculated risk. In this scene, Garfield's character even channels Modine's "The Joker". I thought Vaughn was a strange casting choice, but I thought he did pretty well actually. Anyway, not much originality to the movie, even down to falling in love with the right girl before enlisting. Another big problem with the movie is that it just became unbelievable. Obviously I've never been on a battlefield so this is all a guess. It's amazing to me that any of these men could even have the wherewithal just to try to save someone else while trying to save their own skin. That seems like an impossible task as it is, so what we end up getting is what appears to be an action film rather than something that looks authentic like Oliver Stone's great Platoon.
Fortunately, as an entertainment piece, I thought the movie was superb. There's a certain level of corny to it all, but it's the type of corny I can enjoy. I loved the movie as an underdog story. I think Andrew Garfield was a good fit for the role. He has a nice aura about him. My wife spent the first 20 minutes of the movie making fun of him before tuning out, but I like him, and I rooted for his character. The rest of the cast was pretty good, the action scenes were exciting, and I felt very satisfied when the movie was over. I think if you're looking for a certain type of film, you will be sorely disappointed. If you just want a crowd pleaser, it's friggin awesome.

The Wrestler (2008) rating_3 It is Mickey Rourke's performance I liked the most about this film.
But, zero.
Fully agree. Sadly. most people are just like that and won't change their mind for nothing. Some simply can't stand their time is up others do it out of pure pride.

I'm not very familiar with Vitor Mature but i thought he did an excellent job, he brought a commanding, menacing, presence to his role that went perfectly with the more pleasant Wyatt.
I wasn't a fan of the film myself. I'm usually not bothered by historical inaccuracies but this one did bug me a bit.
Anyway, Victor Mature is one of my favorite actors, but I love him in a "he's so awful that he's entertaining" kind of way. He got roles because he was considered a hunk, not a talent (and he was famously well aware of this fact). He did occasionally turn in a good performance though. I thought he was good in Kiss of Death and I Wake Up Screaming.

I actually thought he was very good here  Haven't seen him in anything else though.
I've seen 13 of his movies. The Egyptian was probably the worst of what I've seen in terms of his performances. I have trouble keeping his westerns straight but there was one that was really terrible as well. I want to say it was The Last Frontier. Androcles and the Lion was just awful all around. He was also terribly hammy in The Robe, Demetrius and the Gladiators, and Samson and Delilah - though I love them.
I'm also pretty surprised he was considered a hunk, don't think he's ugly by any means just not what i usually think of when i think hunk... which is often.

This is the best addition to the comedy-horror genre since Shaun of the Dead, mixing well the comedy element and the horror element to a point that it never takes you out of the movie. I was genuinely creeped out in one scene being worried about what will happen next, to laughing my ass off the next. I know this genre is very niche by nature, but it’s by far one of my favorite movie genre out there.

The third act of this movie comes out of nowhere with the lead being the perfect vehicle for the audience as she is also (for the most part) just along for the ride as we are. This movie took me completely off guard, as I went into it completely blind, and I don’t regret it. I will not ruin this movie for anyone. So,*please see it without watching too many trailers or reading too much on what this movie is about.

I'm not sure what an Andrei Tarkovsky-directed animated film would look like, but I'd imagine it'd be something like this.
In truth, I'm somewhat surprised that this didn't become an instant favorite of mine. It's filled with a profusion of symbols, and the atmosphere is tangible, dripping with mood and immense attention to the smallest of details.
A rewatch might be in order.
Unforgiven 3
It's far from bad, but the immense acclaim this receives continues to elude me. At a certain point in time, this used to be one of my favorite westerns. However, the more I've learned about the genre - through the discovery of Ford, Tourneur, Mann - I've come to the conclusion that Eastwood's 'deconstruction' is blunt, obvious and lacking in grace. The images of the western masters are graceful, imbued with meaning and subtlety within each and every frame. Eastwood's film is merely good, not great.

4 out of 5 popcorn buckets
A well-acted, well-directed war film that suffers from an underwritten, slightly overwrought script, and a somewhat disjointed film structure. Andrew Garfield is fantastic in the lead performance as Desmond Doss, but lacks a gritty edge he used perfectly in Scorsese's Silence. The rest of the cast is excellent (if Vince Vaughn's scenery-chewing is tolerable to you), and the film's second half is gritty, raw, refreshingly violent and genuinely shocking. But, I felt the first half looked a bit too much like a Hallmark movie, and that the dialogue wasn't as strong as it could have been in the more emotional moments. But, the action is tense, the romance is believable, the chemistry between the actors is great, and I felt the story was certainly one worth telling. But, Gibson indulges in a bit too much slow-motion, a bit too much schmaltz, and a bit too much of the really obvious "He's Jesus" parallels that's been done to death by the Wachowskis. But, overall, it was a really, really good war film. Highly recommended.

I've seen this movie probably three to four times now, but this is the time where I now truly appreciate its greatness. I already enjoyed it a lot for being a fun, referential film, but it's more than that. I notice that now. I was actually surprised this to see some pretty disorienting angles and shots that make a lot of sense, I didn't remember that. I know that a bunch of folks don't like the references and all of the minor red herrings, but they totally work for me. I already know who the killer is, but it was still fun watching all of the teases. I think Seth Green and Shaggy's characters are purposely over the top, which is in itself a reference to the over the top teenage characters of horror films. I know that's a complaint I've seen, but I think it's totally justified and aids the film. I think the film would get an extra half-star if it stuck with the statement on the media, but it abandons that in favor of the final big set piece.
Wait, Seth Green is in Scream? WHERE!?!?! WHERE IS HE JJ?!!?

It's been a while since I've been on, so this might be a long read. You've been forewarned.
1. Hard Candy - 9/10 - Found this movie while browsing through Netflix at the beginning of the month, decided to give it a watch. It stars Ellen Page as a teen girl who meets up with, goes to the house of, and entraps and tortures a man that she suspects is a pedophile.
Honestly, the movie is really good. The acting's well done, the dialogue works for the movie, and the story is concise. My issue with it is the cinematography. Sometimes, it was a clear picture; other times, it was shaky cam; and in one particular scene, there were lens flares everywhere. Aside from that, all in all solid film. Definitely not for kids!
2. 10 Things I Hate About You - 9/10 - Two things that helped me love this movie: I'm a Heath Ledger fan, and I'm a William Shakespeare fan. This is a modernized retelling of "The Taming of the Shrew" that stars Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, among others I don't recall seeing in any other movie, as high schoolers trying to hook up on dates with two sisters: the older is "the shrew", a girl who doesn't like anyone and wants to make a statement with her life; the younger is a typical ditzy girl who wants to date. Their father approved of the younger sister dating...if the older sister dated as well! Cue the hilarity, the nonsense, and all the plots!
As far as high school movies go, this is among my favorites. The acting is pretty good, the dialogue and jokes are hilarious, and the story is enjoyable! Recommended to those looking for a good rom-com, but don't bring the younger kids in to see this! Also, it's a pity that some channel decided to make a run-of-the-mill teen show out of it years later.
3 & 4. The Godfather & The Godfather Part II- 10/10 - I have finally gotten around to seeing The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, and oh my! I have been missing out! Crime dramas are among my favorite genres, so why it took so long for me to see these is beyond me!
Simply put, the movies are amazing in every way, and to be honest, I thought The Godfather Part II was better than the first film, but even so, they're both masterpieces! The acting is spectacular, the dialogue is fantastic, the stories are wonderful, the editing is superb, the list goes on! Definitely a must-watch, but probably not for kids, as there is a lot of language, blood, and violence in both movies. Also, a heads-up - both movies are long (The Godfather is 2h 57m; The Godfather Part II is 3h 22m), so be sure to have the time to watch them!
I also watched La La Land and The Lego Batman Movie recently, but I haven't actually prepared a review for either. I can say this, though: I give La La Land a 10/10 and I'm debating on either an 8/10 or 9/10 for The Lego Batman Movie.

This film may not be perfect - it may come off as overly verbose and a bit theatrical at times, and some parts of it just don't seem to work as effectively as the others. But when it delivers, it delivers in spades. Long story short, it simply resonates with me, both in terms of thematic content and how it merges drama with deadpan comedy. It's brilliantly acted, too. The "I'm mad as hell" speech is the most cited one but it's not even my favorite speech in the film - it's chock full of them. Which says a lot about how well written it is.
A classic.

It's a re-watch, but what a re-watch.
I honestly don't understand how come this movie didn't win an award for Visuals. They are gorgeous at hi definition. And whoever would think that a movie about Dr Strange could actually be good?
There were a couple of things I personally didn't enjoy that much or would have done a bit differently [tone down his jokes - Stephen Strange isn't a humorous character at all- , make him far more egotistical and make him suffer a bit longer till he finally redeems himself] but I understand why it was done the way it was done.
Have absolutely no problem whatsoever with The Ancient One's character sex change. Don't really think portraying him [it's a him in the comics, though he also shapeshifts] as a long bearded Kung Fu Master out of those 60's and 70's Japanese flicks would be smart [though there is a nod to it when Strange enters Kamar Taj]
The use of Pink Floyd's Interstellar Overdrive (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4o2sA0vpA-4) was such a cool feature [for those that don't know, Pink Floyd's second album "A Saucerful of Secrets" cover is straight out of Dr. Strange's comics. And it also features "the living Tribunal" character that is referenced in the movie - Mordo presents a Relic called "the Staff of the Living Tribunal" - and, as a curio, Pink Floyd also reference Dr. Strange in their song "Cymbaline (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZM5iopSs_rI)"], so it is in perfect alignment with the 60's and 70's psychedelic movement [and Dr. Strange was a great read for the stoners back then]

Hmm, well, you already said that you hated Afterlife, but looking back I consider it a bit of a rough draft for Retribution. The first two thirds are a pretty standard zombie apocalypse story (albeit with some decent characters thrown in like Luther and Chris), but the third third sets the tone for Retribution rather nicely. I still maintain that that's the series' Fast Five, though now I wonder if I've built it up too much.

But, I did see a short action scene with the crew escaping in a military-like vehicle, and I didn't think that looked too bad. I'm pretty sure it's that Afterlife entry that had screwed up the franchise completely for me and clouded everything. Hopefully my expections for the rewatch are so low I might enjoy it. The Bronx Bull
Originally meant to be a sequel to 1980's Raging Bull, this is more of a new take of the life of Jake LaMotta. Most of the film is set before and after his in-ring career whereas Raging Bull focused more on his life in the ring and shortly after his retirement. William Forsythe will no doubt be unfavorably compared to DeNiro, but he brings his own style to the role of LaMotta and for its production value, it works here. One thing I did like is when LaMotta has an obstacle in his life that he must face, it juxtaposes to him fighting in the ring, as if he ready to face said obstacle head on. Definitely not a classic, but not bad for a biopic.

The story was deep, amazing, encouraging. The simple man stands up to his principles and Christian values. It was a complete package. There was love, forgiveness, fear, anger, sorrow, etc, simply anything from the variety of basic human emotions, virtues, vices. Also the acting was excellent (Garfield and all around him). Up until here I was really enjoying.
However does Gibson need to be this explicit with the graphics? Why he needs to supplement such a beautiful story with all that butchery? I think the graphics were too elaborated, quite over the edge. I understand it's about the war, but this will not help me to comprehend as I've never been in one.

Great film. I'm pretty pissed right now because i lost a long write-up i had done for this . So just my general thoughts. This could have actually been higher as it had a big effect on me. The reason it wasn't was because i had a mixed reaction to the first half, some stuff really worked like the super intense prison visit scene which was one of the best parts in the film, some didn't mostly during the part she had run away. As well as that some of the performances weren't very good like the cheerleader who Cebe hated and there was some crazy editing choices, some i liked but the scenes ending really abruptly got annoying. The second half however was completely amazing and so devastating. Those last ten minutes were extremely depressing and horrifying, everything from when Hopper was released was in a more understated way then those last ten were just nuts. The performances of the main four characters were fantastic too particularly Hopper i was stunned that he played such a horrible character in his own film, loved the soundtrack too. Wouldn't make a habit of watching this coz as i said it was really devastating to me, but i did kinda love it.

If it had a better beginning, I'd give this a 10. Easily the best movie about mariage and love. Richard Brooks is the most underrated director, and keeps proving it over and over with me.

A couple of sisters check into a hotel in a beautiful town in hope of finding their estranged mother. Suddenly, someone is killing off a bunch of women. I had heard that this was a pretty hardcore Giallo, but it was much more like softcore porn. There wasn't nearly enough tension or violence. If you only need to see a plethora of hot chicks and jungle bush, this is the movie for you. If you need something more, look elsewhere.

A Most Violent Year (J.C. Chandor, 2014) 4

This isn't the first gangster origin story espousing the American dream. It might, however, be the first which demonstrates its strength through mercy and restraint instead of a cliche, fetishistic portrayal of wealth and violence. Restraint actually serves as a valid descriptor of the filmmaking, the director only indulging for a select few scenes (the deer, the oil spill) which are so openly symbolic that they should struggle to mesh with the organic nature of the story, but whose aims are so transparent that they serve more as poetic points of emphasis than clever contrivance. As with many of these stories, its conclusion is subject to interpretation as to whether it constitutes victory or defeat, though I'd argue its one of the more compelling offerings within that category.

Arrival (2016)
4+
This has clear inspirations, or motifs from a lot of other movies have. It's like Contact, but's it's a lot less grand. It has the busy complexities of Nolan's recent sci fi films, but it's a lot less talky, and in your face. It has the political charge of District 9, but it's far less obvious. It does have a "yeah, me too" story, but if you ask me, it does it better than all of those mentioned. It takes it's traditional story, and truly molds it into something I think is pretty damn special, with how it is crafted, how much they give to the audience, the way these themes are presented, it's all really good stuff. My only issue is a pretty out of nowhere reveal between Adams, and Renner's character at the end. But, other than that minor nitpick, it's a beautifully shot, smart science fiction drama that I feel like has a lot to offer if you have the patience for it.
Get Out (2017)
3.5+
I liked it quite a bit. I wouldn't call it a horror masterpiece, but I can understand the acclaim, there are moments of brilliance in here, and it's always consistently good. Jordan Peele is shockingly ultra confident for a first time director, you don't usually get movies that seem this fearless when it comes to debuts. Sometimes you kind of know what's coming from a lot it if you've watched the trailer in terms of theme, and tone, but a lot of the time it doesn't, there's actually some pretty unique commentary that I wasn't expecting from it that transcends itself from what people were expecting. It can be a little overplayed, and obvious at times, sometimes I wished it was a bit more subtly mixed in with everything going on, but I never once thought "ok, we get it," or something along those lines, which is always a good sign for satire.
The horror is good, although very traditional. You have your seemingly innocent, albeit uncomfortable community that you pretty much know has dark intentions, you've seen it before, and you know where's it going to go. There's a few twists, and turns, but nothing truly shocking. But, it's given a jolt of originality from the clever writing to keep it from being too "been there, done that." It's funny, but not in the way you'd expect. Save for some of Lil Rel Howery's lines, there's no broad, laugh out loud comedy, which was a nice surprise, and quite a shock coming from someone who is mostly known for sketch comedy, I like it when satire can be a bit more subdued with it's humor.
Overall, I think it was really close to being great, but I'll settle for pretty damn good. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Peele's next is even better. This is a good start to his film career, and I dare anyone to say he's not as talented as his partner after seeing this.

Bad Santa 2 (2016)
1
**** this movie. I didn't expect much, but man, they just got it wrong, wrong, wrong. The first one is one of my favorite movies, it's delightfully mean spirited, and nasty, during, for most, the best time of the year, and it does so by being hysterical, without ever begging for laughs. It's also surprisingly sweet at times, it's it own unique sadistic way. This movie offers nothing the first one did. Bad Santa wasn't a joke riot, it didn't throw one at you every ten seconds. But, this one goes for far too many desperate, cheap laughs that mistakes the original's dark comedy for horrible one liners trying to shock. Really, the jokes are just downright horrible. It tries to have a soft spot, but in a far more traditional way that really doesn't work for these characters.
Thornton seems tired, and not in the way the character calls for. The naive, uncomfortable character Brett Kelly played as a kid now just comes off as very annoying as an adult. You would think Kathy Bates would be funny in this kind of role, but she's really not. Poor Tony Cox, he still seems like he's trying. His delivery is still there, he's a funny guy, but he can't get past the script, all he's really there for is to take the garbage jokes that were made at his expense. What a pointless, unnecessary, god awful movie. It fails as a comedy, and even moreso as a sequel. It might be one of the worst sequels I've ever had to sit through.

Complex plot?- I thought it was too straight forward. In regards to superhero protagonist,- it only works if he is fighting against superhero antagonist, otherwise it's savage slaughter. First "John Wick" had this problem (haven't seen second), "The Equalizer" had this problem and "The Accountant" has this problem- overpowered protagonist. I don't know how you could call the story simple. It takes a 20 minute break towards the end to let JK Simmons explain wtf is even happening through flashbacks. You could cut the investigators, the British lady explanation, the multiple red herrings, the brother, the father, and the mother out and still have a substantial movie. One that flows a lot better and doesn't spread itself too thin trying to be clever, fail at being emotional, and put its ensemble cast to work.
As for him being overpowered, they put his friends and acquaintances in the line of fire to compensate. That's a pretty common trope. Look at Taken. Look at Bourne. Hell, the best part of the movie was watching Affleck operate in that apartment building. So none of that really bothered me. Ideally, with a movie like this the biggest conflict he should have to overcome is with his disability instead of any antagonist. That kind of goes out the window as soon as you rebrand autism as a super power.

Good film. My favourite things were the cinematography and Jane Greers performance and character. She was exactly what i like in a femme fatale. Likable to an extent but somewhat dark and mysterious so you are never comfortable completely warming to her, and genuinely enticing so you can believe that the protagonist would fall for her. Although the latter part was in spite of the story, if Greer wasn't as good as she was a good chunk of this wouldn't have worked for me which brings me to my main problem that stopped this from being a potential favourite. Mitchum's narration annoyed me a bit. It just felt a bit lazy; we saw Jeff doing something then his narration would explain exactly what was happening and what he was thinking; made the film feel rushed. I mean why on earth did they have Jeff kiss Cathy that early on? What the hell was that? I was baffled, they hadn't attempted to build anything between them. They had the brief meeting then maybe a minute and a half of talking in the bar before they go for a walk then the romantic music plays and he kisses her. I swear i almost burst out laughing at how much the director had jumped the gun for me at least, it felt so flat and just weird. At this point i thought i wasn't going to like this even though i had already taken to Cathy, thankfully it improved when Kirk Douglas came back into it. Actually the very moment that got me back into it was when Jeff and Whit are going down to the hotel bar when he has just arrived and a woman walks in with a sunhat on stopping Mitchum dead in his tracks; it really cemented the stakes. I really liked Kirk Douglas performance and character more and more as the film went on, there was something that completely worked about how calm he was. Loved when it was revealed that Kathy was with him again, he didn't raise his voice or threaten Jeff, presenting her was enough to show Jeff that he knows everything and that Jeff doesn't have a choice. I love stuff like that reminds me of Vito and Michael in The Godfather, helps create a great antagonist. After that the story got a little crazy with various twists and turns in a short period of time, i enjoyed it though. The only bad thing for me was how Joe died, that was ridiculous. Loved both Jeff's short lived victory scene over Whit and Cathie, Mitchum was at his best and seeing Whit finally get angry was amazing, the ending too really didn't expect Jeff to die.
So yeah, i did like this and i think it's probably better than the rating i gave it; the things i mentioned in the first half hour dragged it down a bit though.
But, zero.

I say who are we to judge these people though they may well be self destructive in the end but at least they do what they want with their lives and it does seem to be one they love, what is that compared to living what we see as a normal life which is probably be one that they would ultimately be unhappy in.

The Eyes of my Mother (2016)
Finding this one really difficult to judge how much I liked it. Its a slow burning horror, beautifully filmed in black and white and with a real unsettling atmosphere throughout. The film itself is very minimalist, which leads us to Kika Magalaes, who more or less carries the film in its entirety. I'll not spoil by going any further but her performance as a woman obviously unbalanced and lonely is fantastic.
Highly recommended.

The horrors of war and the trials of faith examined through a powerful premise which unfortunately degrades into typical Hollywood fair. I don't know how you could call the story simple. It takes a 20 minute break towards the end to let JK Simmons explain wtf is even happening through flashbacks.
Flashbacks were not necessary. They are best used in relation to current psychological state of characters or as a fancy method to connect the dots. In other words there should be some feature connecting presence and past to make flashbacks justifiable. Flashbacks are not good for explaining something that could have been explained in linear timeline without loosing "essence".
You could cut the investigators, the British lady explanation, the multiple red herrings, the brother, the father, and the mother out and still have a substantial movie. One that flows a lot better and doesn't spread itself too thin trying to be clever, fail at being emotional, and put its ensemble cast to work.
Repeated demonstrations of protagonist's intellectual and other abilities doesn't make a movie clever. Otherwise "Beautiful Mind" would be clever movie. And surely "The Accountant" was as dry of emotion as movies come. Even if it's justified given it's accountant. As far as ensemble cast goes, they fulfilled their roles defined as marveling in accountant's abilities.
As for him being overpowered, they put his friends and acquaintances in the line of fire to compensate. That's a pretty common trope.
True.
Look at Taken.
Taken relies on audiences satisfaction of watching the bad guys getting annihilated above all else.
Look at Bourne.
Bourne spends as much time running away from his enemies as he does pursuing them. Besides there is more thought put into how their confrontations should transpire. Having protagonist shoot up his opposition with as much effort as I eat my birthday cake is not a way to make a movie interesting.
Many superheroes had to overcome worse than autism. Look at Deadpool.
You mean, every action flick ever has this problem?
Most action heroes spend lots of time having to overcome difficulties or having to get the **** out of somewhere. So no, most action movies don't have this problem.
So John Wick was shot and that's why he isn't superhero. Well, yes, one of twenty guys who were shooting at him thanks to dumb luck hit him. Meanwhile, John Wick fired 19 kills with 19 bullets. (Doesn't apply to "John Wick 2", I haven't seen it.)
Look at "Mission Impossible" series. It is called that way because it is a nudge more possible than impossible. As opposed to "Breezing Through Missions" hypothetical franchise.
TheUsualSuspect

Most action heroes spend lots of time having to overcome difficulties or having to get the **** out of somewhere. So no, most action movies don't have this problem.
I don't see how you can defend basic action films where every bad guy misses the hero (James Bond, Any Arnold Movie, Any Stallone, Any Seagal) and take a swipe at John Wick. John Wick is a trained killer, he kills with precision and quickness. The film is shot with wide steady cameras instead of the Jason Bourne shaky cam trying to hide bad choreography. Bourne style doesn't put me in the action, it distracts from it. Wick was different and slick, the camera movement reflected the character.
Wick isn't invincible, he gets hit. He wears a vest, everyone else I mentioned does not, those bullets magically miss. Guess what? Wick gets captured. He doesn't magically get out himself, he needs help, enter Dafoe.
If you don't like the film, that's one thing. But to say it relies on out tired action films cliche is just wrong. It takes a simple premise and made it fun to watch. Clearly people are responding to it as the sequel more than double the opening weekend gross.
Superhero films are tired and cliche, don't get me wrong, I enjoy them too...but I'll take a John Wick style action flick over Superhero any day.

Yes, we should do what we are called for and persevere in it, so long as we take care of our kids. Other than that, I'm fine with that. :)
I need to see "John Wick 2". People say it has improved on the original. It will either prove my point or shut me up.
Regarding steady camera and fight/shootout choreography- neither provides automatic advantage in regards to cinematic immersion. For example "Man on Fire" and "Saw" franchise are some of worst examples of visual and sound editing out there. Of course there are plenty shaky cam fight scenes that make it impossible to see or perceive what is happening. On the other hand watching "Kill Bill 2" Uma Thurman on smooth cam kill 20 ninjas (assumingly well trained ones) puts me out of it too. I much preferred "The Hateful Eight" for trash talking for 3 hours (substance) over either of two "Kill Bills" (style).
Anywho, since when is watching shootouts is more like watching ballet as opposed to crapping ones pants over who gets killed next.

I've been wanting to watch this movie ever since it first came out and finally had the chance to. The film is about a guy named Chiron and his personal struggles dealing with his sexuality in a hostile environment. It's divided into three parts, his childhood, teenage years and then adulthood. The plot is simple but never boring. It's a beautifully shot and very well made film. And I gotta say, I'm glad it beat La La Land for Best Picture.

I meant enhanced from how it was originally. Somehow I think there is a correlation with Five Easy Pieces. I have to re-watch this to see the similarities.

Yeah i couldn't tell you. That was the first time i saw it, only first heard of it a few months back. Thought it was pretty great, especially the second half, so is Five Easy Pieces.

Accidentally I'm planning to catch red cliff this week. Already seen the excerpt years ago from either dvd or tv aired but I never got the chance/have mood to finish thing up completely for I and II
It actually took me a while to watch this condensed version because I had wanted to see the two movies when they came out and they were actually at the Detroit Institute of Art's movie theater (the first on Saturday and the second on Sunday) and I was soooo p!ssed at myself for missing them both when I had the chance - on a big screen -IN an old time movie theater!! ARRGGH lol

I'm not even remotely sure what it means, but it kept my attention whether it deserved it or not. Reminds me of Yorgos Lanthimos' work though more concerned with tone and powerful images than rigid and meaningful rules. Also, there are a few subtle reference's to Michael Haneke's The Seventh Continent which similarly documented the end of nuclear family.

The problem with watching so many good movies is that after a while, it becomes very hard to be awed. And then, every once in a while, comes a movie that just does it. When that happens, I know I've witnessed something great.
I can't explain how much this has resonated in me. I'm going through a particularly bad time at the moment, and this just made me face some things I wasn't very keen on facing.
The script is just gold, extremely quotable, philosophical and, most of all, depressing. The acting by David Thewlis is fantastic and the soundtrack and cinematography are haunting. I need to wait a bit more before writing something more about this, maybe I'll do a review in a couple of weeks.

From the top 100 noirs list, this is described as a semidocumentary. Besides a good amount of narration, I thought the style was pretty traditional. T-Men are special agents who are trying to bust some counterfeiters. Visually, it is very dark giving it a gritty and realistic feel. Besides it's look and a fairly shocking scene towards the end, I thought it was average.

The last movie I watched was "HULK", certainly for the 22 time, minimum.
I actually owned the Hulk#1 comic book. But unfortunately (as far as this story is concerned) had Italian parents, My mom threw away all my comics and baseball cards.
I'm a HULK fan, and I believe Ang Lee portrayed the Hulk as I Imagined the Hulk to be.
And Ang Lee's construction of the movie was excellent.
I enjoy short multi-screened moments in a film. It's liable to keep your mind alive while watching watching a film.

The Revenant (rewatch)
Enjoyed this even more the second time round, love the gorgeous cinematography and its spirituality
"The Revenant is alive. Its surface is fire and blood, hair and mud, but its animating spark is longing and love. The Revenant is about spirits yearning to be holy and others lost to pride. The Revenant is about the breath God shared with us that we now share with the world and about the ways we corrupt that breath when we’re consumed from the inside by the hellfire of greed. The Revenant is a gasp, an ache, a prayer"

There's spoilers in this so don't read if you haven't seen it.
Neither this film or The Dardenne's have been on my radar really, i only ended up watching this because i read some best of the 2000's list and i read the premiseof this which sounded really intriguing. A man takes on the boy who strangled his son as an apprentice, sounded like it could be a great Character/Psychological study. I think it was somewhat, the problem was that i found it hard to connect to everything which i think was at least partially due to me knowing the premise, funny since i wouldn't have watched it otherwise. You don't find out the boy is the one who killed his son or that his son is dead until around a half hour in, up to that point Olivier has been intently watching and following him, obviously i knew the reason for that already so it failed to grip me. I doubt this would've been a favourite if i hadn't known but i do think i would have liked it more. Another thing is i don't really get how this could possibly happen.I get that Francis wouldn't know Olivier was the father but how on earth would these connections not be made by the training center, ignoring the trauma Olivier could've possibly encountered having to watch the murderer of his son living his life there's also the possibility that Olivier would try and get revenge. It's very hard to swallow but something i tried to put to the back of my mind. The film had some dull parts certainly, but also interestingg ones; i really liked the scene when he gives Francis a lift and Magali tries to see him. The film is pretty much as straightforward as they come but it's still pretty weird. In a film like this i'd expect there to be some tension with the possibility of Olivier trying to harm him always present, but it's absolutely not at no time did i think he was entertaining these thoughts. An odd approach that i do appreciate as it felt a bit different. There was some other stuff that showed he hadn't forgiven him and still held comtempt like him abruptly stopping his car to not allow him to sleep and him not paying for his pastry at the bakery. The moment he told him it was his son was great, there wasn't long left in the film and i was starting to think he wouldn't then he sprung it on him at the most random moment. The ending was pretty much how it had to be as well, a big dramatic Olivier breaking down scene wouldn't have suited the film at all.
It had a realistic feel which i appreciated but there was even some stuff there that i didn't like much. For example there's loads of the camera following Olivier from behind walking about or whatever, got pretty annoying. However, i did like him being filmed from the side or when he turned back towards the camera. I know at the very least as an actor you need to act like there's not a camera there so that shouldn't be something actors are praised for, but i dunno there was something about Olivier being followed from behind then abruptly turning and walking directly toward the camera before overtaking it and being filmed from behind again that felt very well done on his part, his reactions felt very realistic and his resolve to keep up his stonyfaced demeanor was outstanding. He wasn't emotionless or anything, to me he brought across fairly subtle touches that told you he was concerned or whatever and he made me wonder constantly what he was thinking. Amazing performance, easily the best thing about the film. I looked him up after this and he seems to be a Dardenne regular so he'd be the thing that would draw me into checking out more of their stuff. In the end an interesting film but i found parts of it dull and felt that knowing what happened going in hurt my viewing, the rating is mainly for Olivier Gourmet's performance.

An absolutely silly effort to make Adrien Brody of all people a grizzled action star. You can tell he hit the gym, but his Dark Knight growl makes Christian Bale's sound legitimate. I was actually surprised by how much talent (relatively speaking) signed up for this. With a nerd like Topher Grace, he probably accepted pennies on the dollar, and I'm thankful he did. There's definitely love for the property here. Sure, its expansion of lore comes off as fan fiction, but if samurai duels with aliens is wrong, I don't want to be right. It might be mediocre, but it's not a cynical cash in on a franchise's name.

Viaggio in Italia (1953, Roberto Rossellini)
3.5
A stark, fleeting glimpse into a disintegrating relationship against the backdrop of a sightseeing tour of Naples - or vice versa. Everything about this film screams simplicity, but its stripped down, unfinished look mirrors the weariness and alienation surrounding two people (played by Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders), each stranded on their own "desert island" - one of regret and ennui mixed with secret longing, and the other of unintentional callousness and detachment. The rapprochement in the end feels forced and temporary - we know it won't last long, and is just a desperate clutching at a straw in an attempt to camouflage the bitter truth but for how long? For another day, or week, or year? Hard to say.
The film provides us with no answers; it simply captures life as it floats by - unvarnished, often meaningless but at the same time filled with strangely beautiful moments of longing for the unattainable.

This on the other hand, I didn't enjoy at all. I watched this with a friend and he was really enjoying it, I couldn't understand why. It's formulaic, extremely predictable and boring. I feel like whole concept/idea seems like it would make a great horror film but the execution was a total let down.

After music and movies, comedy is the most important thing to me. But most movies that are in the genre of "Comedy" seem to be very silly. Usually slapstick, screwball, hours of clumsy baloney.

I didn't know anything about it, except it's the favourite of some people around here (Miss Vicky especially). It was surprising that it was about the Marquis de Sade.
The story is quite interesting and it managed to get me interested all the way through. The script is also very good, and Kaufman creates the perfect conditions for a bunch of great actors to shine! Geoffrey Rush, in particular, was stellar. His array of emotions is extraordinary, and the way he portraied the descent of his character from over the top lust to pure madness was astonishing! Phoenix and Michael Caine were also pretty good and the actresses chosen to play Maddie and Simone are incredibly sexy!
I liked the last 20 minutes above all, the pacing and tension were very well managed, and the ending has a certain fatality that I found very intriguing!

Yes, there are worse X-Men movies out there, but Logan never managed to really grab me on any level. http://i.imgur.com/DEtpg5M.jpg
My first Sang-soo feature. His writing is refreshingly natural and idiosyncratic. Every exchange feels effortless. The way that he's never afraid to go into the character's head for their thoughts is rather jarring but a welcome dimension. The four act structure is a bit rigid for my taste, but the hokey transitions are fun. I think he could have handled the reverse timeline a little more carefully for clarity's sake. Still, technical gripes are beside the point with something like this. It's earnest, vulnerable filmmaking. Quintessential cinema verite. Excited to see some of his more major works.

I'm afraid this movie has "Skyfall syndrome" and people have been really disappointed with the last outing(s) and then this one ends up actually not sucking really bad.
I wonder how many times I'm going to hear "oh look! They really went for it! It's bloody and violent and full of profanity and it's the Wolverine we always wanted!" Personally it takes more than a few (hundred) limps getting slashed for me to be impressed. By 1/3 I was already getting tired of seeing people being cut like a cake in different ways and Logan saying f*ck at least 8 times within the first 10 minutes of the movie.

The problem for me (despite the lack of investment in the characters that I mentioned already), was really that I expected more out of it. After Apocalypse, the next movie didn't need to be particularly good (like your mentioned "Skyfall syndrome"), yet it still managed to disappoint me.

I didn't mind the violence at all, but things like random breasts for no reason seemed really out of place. It was funny to hear Patrick Stewart swear in the trailer, but I do think they overplayed it in the film. Language doesn't bother me in the slightest, but when characters who previously didn't have a foul mouth suddenly do, it just seems really strange and unnecessary.
Instead of "Skyfall syndrome", I think part of this film fell victim to "Deadpool syndrome".

Nocturnal Animals (2016, Tom Ford)

What I liked about this film is that it doesn't try to smack you over the head with a twist at the end to show you how smarter-than-thou it is. It simply tells a twofold story of a relationship shown through the prisms of two people - the scorner and the scorned. The 'book' storyline is at the core of the film, and it is mesmerising. Edge-of-the-seat material across the board. Jake Gyllenhaal and, particularly, Michael Shannon deliver fantastic performances, and the direction by Tom Ford is impeccable. I'm sure a lot of people probably expected more from the ending (and from the movie, in general) and thought it was too basic and obvious, but I liked it for its simplicity and effectiveness in tying the final loose ends together. Instead of resorting to some over-the-top “gotcha” trick, it simply lingered on Adams' character's face, and it said it all without saying too much.
Dat opening title sequence, though..:)

For me though it was a huge step up from the X men films, Iron man, Avengers, Thor etc which are all bang average (or worse) and follow more or less the same story every single time, and are just too nice. This was my second Dreyer. I watched Ordet for the 5th Hall of Fame here years ago, all i really remember is i liked it. Should watch it again and check out his other stuff as i thought this was great. All i knew going in was that it was about witches and that it was apparently really slow, i guess it was but i honestly wouldn't have even thought of that if i hadn't read it and it didn't bother me at all.
Medieval heavy-moralistic attitudes are something i've always found very intriguing. Of course this could be seen as analogous to any oppressive regime like a certain one that was on everyone's particularly European's minds when this film was made. Separating it from that though i still find it a very interesting film without having to take any of that into consideration. Heriof Marte's begging for her life scene really got to me. The actress did a very good job, she seemed like a normal old woman who hadn't done anything wrong terrified of what was to come, so much so that she was willing to give up Anne's mother. "I'm so afraid to die" was really well delivered with her voice trembling then her turning back as if to say something else but just realizing it's useless and that her life is coming to an end. The great thing about this is that it shows that this way of living was so ingrained into this society that Marte herself believes Anne's mother was a witch. Despite the exact same thing happening to her at this moment she still doesn't question the validity of that. That part alone does an excellent job of setting up the mindsets of the time and it's only a few short scenes and maybe three minutes worth of dialogue. There's also the confession scene which is hilarious in a not funny in the slightest, horrifying sort of way. "She consented to the confession" made me laugh in disbelief, yeah we just brutally tortured her for god knows how long and now finally she has admitted to what she has done, there's no way she would have confessed to anything you asked of her to stop the torture. Tough old broad, wonder why she didn't use the dark arts on us when we were allowing her to freely wander about talking to Absalon. We also have "a fine confession", jesus i could see this in a Mel Brooks film. Yeah, we got it out of her guys, now lets not question why she only started confessing when we threatened to continue the torture, and lets not make anything of her not actually offering any answers herself but instead just agreeing with everything we were telling her. The execution scene was horrific, great scene(s). As i said earlier i found Marte just like a normal old woman, quietly scared but here she sounds like a raving mad woman out of fear which obviously in the minds of the church further confirms that she was a witch. The drastic change in her voice in particular and her screams as she's thrown on the stake were chilling. Very draining first half hour that's set the central conflict as well as the feel for what the society is like up very well.
I think Anne falling for Martin was done well enough. They didn't need to focus too much on it for it to be believable, the fact that her marriage to his dad was forced and that she is closer to age with him as well as the fact that Absalom was busy most of the time so she spent it with him, him conforting her during Marte's execution in particular was enough to make it believable. What it was best for was showing Anne separating herself from her existance as a repressed reverand's wife, her actually experiencing love and joy changing her personality completely, for the better in our eyes but a drastic change in those days especially towards what would be considered bad behaviour for a woman of course raises eyebrows. It's a great insight into a break from oppression, how much she takes to it to the point that you could just accept this film as a straightforward depiction of a woman becoming a witch, when really it's just her experiencing freedom for the first time in her life. Even the wishing death upon Absalom and later confessing seemed to be her trying to hold onto this happiness which wouldn't be able to continue if she was to continue on as an oppressed wife and her confession was her giving up knowing she can't have it anyway.
Anyway, think i've rabbled on long enough haha. Got to say this film was really creepy as well. The shadows, screaming, children singing, etc really got under my skin at times and worked to create the perfect atmosphere. The only thing i would have liked to see more of was around the village, a bit too much of it was set indoors i really love depictions of medieval villages. Saying that i really liked the creepy inside also with the shadows i mentioned and the seemingly always present ticking clock that enhanced the many silences throughout the film. Great film.

I watched it again today, and feel that I was right 10 years ago.
It is ok, looks good, great idea, Ford is well cast, but it's all a bit bonkers and the important bits are over too quickly, and lesser scenes, where little happens drag on for ages.
File alongside Total recall.

Well this was a pleasant surprise when I clicked on this thread! I had no idea you had any interest in it. I definitely agree with most everything you said (except the Phoenix and Caine being "pretty good" part. I, of course, loved them). And yes, Kate Winslet and Amelia Warner were very sexy, but Joaquin Phoenix was sexier still.

I understand your comments although I don't agree.. For me though it was a huge step up from the X men films, Iron man, Avengers, Thor etc which are all bang average (or worse) and follow more or less the same story every single time, and are just too nice. There were bits of this film that I didn't like but it kind of felt similar to the Dark Knight for me when I was like "Now that is Batman" and with this I was like "Now that is Wolverine".
Thought the young girl playing Laura was superb too,
I like Iron Man and can enjoy a few Marvel movies, but I won't argue that they are similar and "safe" and overall I'm not a big fan of that blockbuster bullsh*t. But just because Logan is different and edgy doesn't mean it pulls it off. I love Dark Knight, one of my favorite films actually and probably the best blockbuster of last decade.
And I agree, the young girl was indeed superb. Still, Logan was a disappointment to me.

And that I can respect. I disagree as I said, and to me I had the same kind of response to Logan as I did to the Dark Knight although I do feel that the Dark Knight had a bit more to it.
What irritates me slightly is people that try and be all 'look at me' and edgy by panning a popular film.
But overall the reason I come on here is to chat films with people and although it would be less frustrating if everyone agreed with me about everything, it would be pretty boring. I am a fan of opinions, just a bigger fan of my own than others :D

Logan (2017)
3.5+
All I can say is this is the standalone Wolverine movie I wanted, it's miles ahead of the other two, that's for sure. Now, why'll I wouldn't say I would rank this nearly as high as The Dark Knight, my favorite superhero film, I get why a lot of people are bringing that one up, it definitely does something pretty different than what we expect from a comic book film these days. Well, some of it. My favorite part of the movie is Wolverine himself, his characterization is just so on point in this one. This movie also succeeds by allowing itself to slow down, and have some genuine character moments. This is still a crowd pleasing action film however, it doesn't completely break the mold, and it's more familiar traits are presented in a way that's pretty typical for the genre. There's a villain in charge of an evil organization, Logan has to stop them from getting the child, action ensues. Don't get me wrong, it's just as entertaining as any other recent superhero film, and the action is a bloody, chaotic delight, this is why we wanted that R rating. It's sometimes done in the way I was complaining about in my thoughts about John Wick Chapter 2 where they use a lot of shortcuts to film the action, but I come to expect that, and it's still very cool regardless. I also appreciate how much smaller this film is compared to something like Avengers, or Batman v Superman. We're not always in the heart of a big city. I love a good CG rumble, with creatures filling up the entire screen, but sometimes a few guys with guns is all we need.
I could go on, but I'll close out by saying this is a well acted, well written, well directed tribute to the series that earns all of the big emotional moments it goes for. Like Deadpool, I was thrilled to see something that feels so separated from other comic book films, and even the franchises they're part of. I love an ongoing comic book series, but sometimes I just really want to read a good graphic novel in the middle of all of it. It's also a message that superhero movies can be something more than connected universes, and big visual wonders, by the series that started the whole superhero movie craze 17 years ago, funny enough. It proves that we come to see these movies not just for the spectacle, or the action, but for the character. It's all about the character.

All About Eve (1950, J. L. Mankiewicz)
One of those classicals I should have already seen.
I had high expectations of this one, and even if didn't blow me away, I was certainly impressed with it.
The dialogue and direction are quite good, but this is mostly driven by the acting of the two leads, Bette Davies and Anne Baxter. Two incredibly strong presences on set, with very different styles and attractions that create an incredible dynamic. The inocence and sweetness of Baxter against the power and coldness of Davies is a mix that works amazingly well, and when they are on the same scene there's a balance that's not seen often.
The evolution of Eve as a character is quite interesting, first we feel sorry for her, then we have our doubts but we end up giving her the benefit of the doubt and finally we see her truly self and we hate it! That was really well managed by Baxter and the director!
I didn't quite like the last scene, though I understand its point. I just thought it needn't to be there.

I'd seen a little of the film beforehand and what struck me immediately was the attention to detail in composing the shots. Great performances from Gregory Peck, Richard Widmark and Anne Baxter. It was also a surprise to discover where I'd seen John Russell before – as the villain in Pale Rider.

Absolutely brilliant... this is John Wick if John Wick was an inept drifter who breaks into peoples homes to take baths and doesn't expect to be alive when he's finished.. okay it's a lot more than that and there was nothing comical about lead actor who conveys different emotions so well.. .but it made me laugh when I was finding a poster for this, there was one John Wick poster amongst all the Blue Ruin posters and I was thinking I had made an absurd comparison. I liked this more than Wick though, I liked this a lot

Solondz from the beginning has made a career out of refusing to cater to broad safe tastes. He shows us transgressive or evil characters, invites us to identify with their pathos, then shows us that despite our sympathy they're rotten anyway. You walk out of one of his films feeling like you've just failed a class in ethics, and wondering if in this baffling world anyone ever passes. - Ebert

Daybreakers is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I finally got around to seeing the more recent offering from the Spierig brothers. While it's a really fun thought exercise in time paradoxes, the 40 minute exposition laying out the contrived circumstances required to execute it really breaks the immersion and ruins the pacing. Everything is so telegraphed. Sarah Snook's magnetic performance kind of goes to waste, but the second half manages to salvage the entertainment aspect. I think there's a lot of unexplored thematic potential here that was never tapped into, thus it's a parlor trick instead of anything more meaningful.

Tom Ford crafts an elaborate narrative in the meta to ponder how provocation encourages self-discovery, how we respond to art, and the symbiotic connection between cruelty and weakness. Michael Sicinski of ReverseShot aptly describes Ford's nightmare scenario as "paranoid fantasy straight out of Deliverance" linking it to out-of-touch classism, but Ford preemptively responds (admits defeat) with the role of the mother inadequately defending her bigotry. Ford can recruit the best actors on the planet, but he can't gel his superficial skill with his intellectual aspirations. Window dressing meticulously constructed is still just window dressing, and there's a pane of glass between me and everything I was supposed to care about in this picture.

From the director of Nekromantik comes the story of a murderous psycho who looks back at his life as he lay dying. What he sees and what we see ain't pretty. It's only 65 minutes long and there's no fun in watching it. It is disturbing and disgusting, and in that way it is very effective. Certainly not for everybody.

a film directed by Quentin Tarantino, entertaining, enjoyable and strong. yet, the story was pretty predictable .. the music choices were amazing it adds a lot to the plot. also, some may say that De Niro was weak in this .. but I think he did just well sticking to his character as well as the other performances. It lasts for 2 hours n' half which could've been shorter but still well worth seeing.

Elia Kazan's directorial debut looks at an early 20th century family living in an apartment building in Brooklyn. I think Kazan is a great director, but I never quite seem to love his movies the way I want to. I don't know why that is since I have a hard time pointing out faults in his films. I just have a hard time staying completely engrossed from start to finish. This particular movie was not at all what I expected. I thought it was supposed to be some kind of uplifting happy go lucky movie. That's definitely not a complaint as I prefer something a little more downbeat. I found much of the movie sad, and that made the touching moments all the more effective. The direction, acting, cinematography, and all that good stuff were all excellent.

I picked this randomly. I sometimes DVR things on TCM if they have a 90% or up, regardless of the director, actor, and this was real good.
It's a thriller, a mystery, it's a drama. Not quite a disaster movie. Very sensual. It did kinda drag towards the end, but when it did, I yelped out loud, hoping it wasn't true.
If you've seen this movie, I'd love to read your review.. My recording cut out, and luckily I found the entire movie on Youtube, so hopefully you guys check it out.

I was lucky enough to see this last night on TCM. A really good movie about political corruptness and the reveal of an assassination plot. I searched on Wikipedia and found that the flick was based of an actual Greek political assassination. Making this more tragic given the film's plot and ending. It also explains the "Any similarities to person's living or dead is intentional" disclaimer at the beginning of the film. So yeah this movie was political as hell. And very well done too.

It's a very decent look into the psychology of a man who's so scared of evil that he will do anything, take all extreme measures to stop it, that he basically loses it in the process. Jack Nicholson did a great job in the lead. In just a few shots he was a little off, but overall he was really great. And it starts as a really nice mystery thriller.
But just... It falls short of being good, which aggravates me. The pacing is slow, way more so than is deemed neccessary. The Crossing Guard was a little bit slow too, but it felt justified for the kind of movie it is. It doesn't pretend to be anything else than a tale of morality rather than revenge. I knew that's what I would get, and I loved it. But this movie starts off as a straight-up mystery thriller, and stays that way for at least an hour. Then it just completely changes direction, and doesn't do anything with the mystery at all. Some parts are so boring you wonder what point they are supposed to serve. Do we really need to see Nicholson read a bedtime story to a child 4 times? Not to mention it's not even until the end I realized that "Hey, this is not a mystery thriller at all". The directing is so confusing that it's not made clear this is actually a character study, not a mystery.
I give it a 7, for the great first hour and the excellent acting. But I was disappointed.
