Lawrence's best performance, in my opinion. Certainly her most "authentic". It's a very raw movie but tight one at that. Debra Granik deserved much more recognition for this and it's a shame it's taken her until now to get another project off the ground.

I hadn't seen this since 2011, Lawrence was instantly a sensation. John Hawkes really surprised me in it as well. I only really knew him from meeker performances like Deadwood but he brings and unforeseen intensity here. He's intimidating.

Few images linger in my mind like that of a girl pulling her fathers severed hands up from a lake.

Not that bad. The relationship between the two main characters was interesting enough. The other two characters annoyed the hell out of me. If I had to sum it up, the movie is about tormented souls and loneliness. Good soundtrack. Could have been a better film with an R rating and a director with a slightly more morbid imagination.

The White Ribbon (2009): 5
http://almostsideways.com/Posters/2009/White%20Ribbon,%20The.jpg
One of the best films I've seen in my life, this to me is Michael Haneke's flawless masterpiece, just the the attention to detail alone was truly ridiculous and astonishing !
One thing I absolutely despise when it comes to movies is a child actor, because 90% of the time they ruin the whole experience for me, "The White Ribbon" surprisingly (not) shocked me with how incredible and phenomenal the performances are, especially by the many and many children, which is an accomplishment most films can't reach. This achievement is largely due to the perfectionist director, he and his crew went through over 7000 kids to pick and choose from, and I have to say, his hard work definitely paid off tremendously.
If you've seen a Haneke film, then you kinda already expect a certain level of excellence, but this time, my already high expectations were shattered by the eminent degree of greatness.
I'm not going to delve into what the movie is about, that's a discovery that I believe one has to seek blindly, don't watch any trailers, don't read any summaries, just go into it expecting an eye opening experience.

-------------------------------------------------
So far, the only films I haven't seen yet from Michael are, the original Funny Games, Code Unknown and Time of the Wolf, I will eventually get to them, but for now, my Haneke marathon is over.

1) The White Ribbon (2009) - 5
2/3) Caché (2005) - 4.5
2/3) The Seventh Continent (1989) - 4.5

5) Amour (2012) - 4
6) The Piano Teacher (2001) - 4
7) 71 Fragments of Chronology of Chance (1994) - 4

I keep telling myself this is the last time. Things are going to be different. I'm not bout this life anymore.

You know what this movie is gonna be. A lot of stone-face, underbutt, but some really cool cars. This has always been the hook for me. Show some crazy stuff I would see in a Super Street on the big screen.

This played out more like a Fiat-Chrysler ad. Dodge this, Chrysler that, Jeep here, etc. That's fine as long as you give me a Hakosuka GTR in there. No luck. Run of the mill super car stuff, with daily drivers of every 30 something grocery store middle manager you've ever seen.

Jason Statham and the baby were good, but his mom wasn't what everyone made her out to be. Oh yeah. It ends with a barbeque. I do really enjoy watching the extras in all the crowd scenes and seeing how truly horrible they are.

Addams Family Values. A new baby in the family brings with it a new nanny, who has marital and murderous sights on Uncle Fester. The sequel to the first Addams Family movie is probably actually slightly better than the first, not least thanks to the subplot in which Wednesday (Christina Ricci, as deadpan perfect as ever) and Pugsley are sent to summer camp. The number of recognisable faces in (mostly) tiny roles in this is through the roof, too, including Peter MacNicol as the camp camp leader, David Hyde Pierce, Tony Shalhoub, a very young Mercedes McNab (Harmony in Buffy and Angel), Frasier's agent from Frasier and Chandler's boss from Friends! Good fun.

The Last Temptation of Christ 2.5
Even if I don't particularly like it, this is a fascinating film. I think the final act is excellent, and Dafoe's performance as Christ is terrific; yet, many segments feel tasteless, the white-washed cast is too distracting to ignore, and the time setting doesn't feel sufficiently anachronistic.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 3.5+
So much fun. Considering that this is Argento's directorial debut, you can colour me impressed. It's also a surprisingly unpredictable mystery, which kept me guessing throughout the entire runtime.

Night of the Lepus (1972)

Corny but totally fun cheesy horror flick about giant, killer rabbits, naturally. Lepus is the Latin term for rabbit. Apparently the producers didn't want to give away the fact that it was about killer rabbits when that's the main draw to this movie. Anyhow, regular rabbits are out of control, wreaking havoc on farmers' crops and such, and naturally overpopulating the area. So, two scientists, the married couple Stuart Whitman and Janet Leigh, with their daughter in tow, come up with a serum meant to control the overpopulation. But, the daughter becomes unknowingly responsible for the whole debacle when she switches rabbits so she can have one of her own and she picks a rabbit injected with the wrong serum, who promptly gets away and starts making giant rabbits.

What follows is pretty hilarious, although not mean to be. We have tons of giant bunnies barreling their way through miniature sets, quick shots of men in rabbit suits savaging victims, people trapped in a cellar shooting through the ceiling, with bunnies with fake blood suddenly flying into the air, obviously with an invisible string wrapped around their bodies, pulling them. Good times. A cast with Whitman, Leigh, Rory Calhoun, DeForest Kelley (with hilarious long sideburns and mustache) and Paul Fix. all perform with a straight face. I really like this flick, in a MST3K kind of way. In fact, I'm wondering why they never tackled this one. Recommended, if you're in the mood.

Gentlemen Broncos (2009)

From the man who wrote and directed Napolean Dynamite comes this same style of comedy. In other words, weird characters, quirky situations, some deadpan acting, and lots of laughs. We have Benjamin (Michael Angarano), a young writer who is still living with his mom, Judith (Jennifer Coolidge), a struggling clothing designer. Benjamin takes his unpolished novel to a writer's convention and goes to a class "taught" by a puffed-up, ludicrous wrtier, Chevalier (Jemaine Clement) who promises prizes to whoever's manuscript a "panel of jurors" find to be the best. Of course Chevalier is the sole member of the panel and he rifles through the manuscripts to find something to steal as his work is no longer drawing interest from publishers. And Benjamin's story is naturally the one he steals and changes enough to make into his own story to sell. It's up to Benjamin, his friends (who've made a really bad amateur movie from his manuscript), and even his mom, to help stop Chevalier. It's all great fun but the best part of this movie by far is what we see when Benjamin's work is read. We see Samuel Rockwell as his hero, Bronco, who is all buffed up, with wild, unruly hair, who is outrageous to say the least. I don't want to give away the dialogue that Rockwell says but I was laughing from the moment he opened his mouth and the moment I saw his getup. The fantasy/sci-fi scenes are as cheesy/hilarious as possible and really make the show. Also, we get the treat of Chevalier's ripoff reading of Benjamin's book being seen from Chevalier's point-of-view, with Rockwell and the same characters changed and not for the better. If you're looking for something offbeat and goofy, this is your ticket.

Free Fire - 2017

Sadly, despite of all the positive I found in this movie, I felt the running time weighing down my experience. You can only see people shooting and crawling through the floor for so long before you desire something to break the monotony. It got to a point where I honestly didn’t care who came out on top, as long as they walked out instead of crawled out.

Free Fire is not a bad movie, it's a little disappointing since I had high hopes for it. The movie has great bones, it's just missing some meat to it that helps the audience throughout the entire running time. But, Sharlto Copley is why I love movies.

Damien Omen II. Seven years after the original Omen and Damien, now living with his uncle and aunt and cousin, is about to turn 13 - and about to learn his true identity and destiny, even as dark forces conspire to remove anyone who threatens that destiny coming to fruition. This 1978 horror sequel to the original Omen has always been a favourite of mine, I used to watch this endlessly as a kid - that explains a lot, doesn't it? ;) - though I hadn't seen it for more than 20 years, so I was pleased to find it still stands up well with a great cast including William Holden, Lee Grant and Lance Henriksen, though its best asset is undoubtedly Jonathan Scott-Taylor, who is perfectly cast as the creepy Damien. Really enjoyed it! :)

Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)

Love this. At times it's akin to a light comedy but you ought to expect as much from Herzog. Kinski and Adjani are so mesmerizing in their roles.

There's also a kind of somnambulistic tone to it all.

It's worth watching for Roland Topor's bat**** performance as Renfield.

8/10

Edit: one more thing I need to say - this movie shoots the hell out of wind and smoke. It's ethereal. A fog covering a memory. That what I meant by somnambulistic.

Panic in Year Zero! (Milland, 1962) 2
http://i.imgur.com/63nN5LO.jpg

How Milland didn't title this "Nuclear Family" is beyond me.

It's a silly, cheap little flick about society crumbling in the wake of a nuclear attack and the lengths to which one family will go to survive it. The father struggles with trying to retain his civility while protecting his family at all costs. The fragility of social convention isn't a new concept, but the story is interesting in the way that it incidentally examines era specific topics such as the mythos of the patriarchy and man's (often racially charged) burden to restore order amidst chaos. As much as the movie purposefully draws attention to the cognitive dissonance of the father in regards to his actions, it is completely oblivious to how ridiculous the male fantasy being portrayed is.

I hope that doesn't make it sound too worthwhile. You're probably better off watching The Twilight Zone.

Suicide Squad (2016)

Truly enjoyed this "anti-superhero" movie. Never read the comic (if there was one) but I didn't feel I missed any information. Mysterious bigwig (Viola Davis) recruits a squad of villains to patrol the city to take down something bad and rescue someone they aren't made privy to at first. Besides Davis, you've got Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jai Courtney, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne. The acting is good, the action is fine, and there's nary a dull moment. I liked the acting of Robbie, Kinnaman, Davis, and Delevinge the best. Wouldn't mind seeing it again.

If the original was A New Hope, then this is definitely Empire.

For reference's sake, I currently have the original at 3 after three viewings, though I feel like if I'm willing to give this new one a 3.5 (which I think is currently my highest MCU rating) then I either have to bump some other ones up or knock this one down. It could go down, but it's worth remembering that my 3 is not the typical 3.

Speaking of stuff that might deserve to get knocked down...

The Legend of Korra: Season 1 - 4.5
(Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko, 2012)

[NEW WATCH]

http://i.imgur.com/z9uKdP6.jpg

Since no one reads the Television Tab, I’m going to take a cue from cricket and posting about this here.

I haven’t watched a television season all the way through in years. The other day, I needed a bit of a pick me up in the form of escapism, so I went to Best Buy and found this. Since I loved Avatar: The Last Airbender, I decided to pick up the sequel series and give it a go.

I just finished the first season. I wasn't sure how well I'd get into it with the first episode, but after that I got more and more impressed and invested. I love the intense and constantly changing emotions I felt. I loved how my opinion about certain characters, notably Tarrlok and Amon, changed as the the series progressed. I love the depth given to all the characters, which would be surprising for a Nick show unless you have seen the first Avatar series.

But the thing I especially appreciate is DiMartino and Konietzko, the creators, really know how to rock a finale. Which, to me, is unusual. Endings are difficult, and I’ve noticed in stories I’m often more impressed by the beginning acts than the later ones. It’s just challenging to know how to wrap up a story in a way that feels meaningful. However, the final episode of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the best finales I've ever seen, and the finale to this first season of Korra is similarly intense, emotional and poetic. So these guys have a great talent in that regard.

My gripes?

Not many. I think the limitations that come with this being a Nickelodeon show (though a very different kind of Nickelodeon show) are present. For example, where most stories would kill off a disposable character, they can’t do that here. So Amon will just bloodbend that character and throw him to the side and out of the picture. I both love and hate that. It feels a bit unrealistic and certainly the villain would feel more sinister if he killed, but without it, when murder does happen you know it’s important, and feels more meaningful because the use is purposeful.

I think the original Avatar: The Last Airbender left such an impression of me that even though I barely remember it from watching it right out of high school, I still kind of missed that series while watching this one. But Aang and his original crew make appearances, and I do think the creators did a great job of making the story it’s own while tying it in with the original.

Overall, a terrific first season.

Badly marketed as a comedy. It's not; it's a war drama and I think they made a huge mistake doing that. I liked it but you did yourself a favour falling asleep for the end. I thought it let the movie down. Luckily for me all I knew about it was it was about a war correspondent in Afghanistan which is a country I'm really interested in. I didnt even know Tiny Fey was involved.

From the top 100 Passions list, this movie focuses on the major turnaround of a character played by Bette Davis. I'm not sure if I'm disappointed in the movie or my ability to get into it. I just had a hard time gaining and maintaining interest. I should probably watch it again at some point.

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 at the cinema today. Pretty good; probably not quite as good as the first but still pretty solid for the most part, and still the only series within these endless comic book movies I find particularly appealing. Kurt Russell was great, and I was happy to see Karen Gillan getting a bigger role too (and even some quasi-redemption for her character as well). Entertaining.

Crack in the World (Marton, 1965) 3
http://i.imgur.com/K17dWOb.jpg

The disaster doesn't really serve a purpose except to underline Dr. Sarason's hubris which pushes his fiance into the arms of another man. It's small potatoes for such a big spectacle. You could point to nuclear anxieties as the driving force behind the film, but it doesn't really engage with those fears in any meaningful way. Albeit shallow, it's an entertaining precursor to the disaster films of my lifetime. The pace is brisk, and the set pieces are charming.

The Lodger (Brahm, 1944) 2
http://i.imgur.com/BAjEqrs.jpg

A thriller which heavily telegraphs every move that it makes. Laird Cregar isn't given the most subtle role to work with, but unraveling the inner psyche of his character is what kept my attention. Most of the picture, including the entire opening half hour, consists of dreamlike night scenes which provide a rich atmosphere of dread. It's rather by the numbers, but I am interested in seeing some of the other adaptations of the source material, Alfred Hitchcock's in particular.

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (Hitchcock, 1927) 4
http://i.imgur.com/8uFluqr.jpg

They say this is the one where Hitchcock found his vision. It's certainly a treat to see him work in the silent medium which so often pushed directors to pursue creative visuals to convey information. Hitchcock manages to throw you for a narrative loop while distilling some emotive fervor that I hadn't witnessed from him before. It's actually reignited my interest in him as a director.

I watched the 2012 restoration featuring Nitin Sawhney's score performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. While it was a bit overpowering at times, and the lyrical segments were jarring, I can't say I've ever been so affected by a score to a silent film. Of course, I'm still rather underexposed to the era, but I'm interested to compare this interpretation to newly scored 2k restoration that Criterion will be releasing in June.

The broken circle breakdown (2013)

Had heard of this film, and it had been recommended to me previously, but didn't know much of the plot before watching, and assumed that it was about a breakdown recovery company.

The film grabbed me from the opening scenes and it grabbed hold of me by the emotions and simply didn't let go.

Summary
This film was pure, beautiful, touching, brutal and relentless. It felt so real, which is an absolute credit to all that were involved in the making of it. The emotions of the characters are tangible, every single feeling was transmitted powerfully from the screen.
If I had known what it was about beforehand, I think that I would not have enjoyed it as much as I would have made my mind up before watching it.
A really good nomination

Very good, if You need simply entertainment. Jeff Bridges is like wine - the older, the better. In every part.

Paterson (Jarmusch, 2016) 2
http://i.imgur.com/2Fx4vJ8.jpg

Maybe this resonates with happy people, but to me it's a liberal arts delusion with Jarmusch's quirky fingerprints all over it. Paterson is ripped straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting and transplanted into present day New Jersey where his sunny disposition and poetic heart can illuminate the world around him. It's sickeningly sincere and pathetically optimistic. If this was a black and white Japanese movie, maybe I'd buy it, but this is a setting and a reality that I can relate to. You can't sell me blue collar drudgery as a fairy tale. You can't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. Life sucks. Grow up.

It's probably really good if you can get over that. Definitely has shades of Charlie Kaufman. This review from Kamran (https://letterboxd.com/kamahmed/film/paterson/) showed me how much of it went over my head. I'd need to put way more time into this to appreciate it. I found it dry, dragging, and thus don't intend to refine my opinion further. I'll get over it.

You don't watch as many White House Press Briefings as I do.

Don't ever let one of my reviews dissuade you lol. Tons of people whose opinions I respect adored it. I even go so far in the review as to admit my problems with it are kind of problems within myself. The most concrete criticism I can throw at it has to do with Jarmusch's depiction of the working class as some romanticized 50s sit com. There's certainly a lot of style and substance to make up for that.

Nah that wouldn't happen. Was just a bit disheartening because i think you've got good taste and you're the first person i've seen not like it.

Edit: Caught a your/you're mistake like an hour after i made it

The Keep (Mann, 1983) 5

I demand a proper restoration of this movie before I die. Michael Mann is simply one of the most visually brilliant directors of his lifetime. Departing briefly from the crime thriller genre he would so effortlessly master, this fantasy horror showcases his vision unburdened by realist constraints. The score from Tangerine Dream is transcendent. Somebody give this the polish and distribution that it deserves. It must be freed.

It's very curious how this film hasn't gotten a proper re-master onto blu ray. It's a prime example of a picture that needs to be on blu ray for the cinematography and music.

Love that awkward pull back shot of Scott Glenn when he's doin' the nasty...wonder if Mann shot that scene himself since he's been known to strap the camera on from time to time.

From what I've read, there seems to be some copyright trouble with the Tangerine Dream score. That could be complete crap for all I know though.

That's what I've been hearing, too. Unless Mann is strong-arming it to stay obscure, maybe a label will get the rights, like Arrow Films, and do it up(?).

Ah geez, that'd be silly if it were true. I did hear that TD used to be very expensive for scoring films, as confessed by Mann if I remember right. Hate to say it but now that Froese is gone, maybe his estate will loosen up?

http://i.imgur.com/2Fx4vJ8.jpg

What a smushing criticism😲 It isn't the best Jarmusch' s movie, but in my opinion it wasn't as bad. Moreover, happy moments have happend sometimes, it's not as bad;)

I hate Waltz. I like Adams. This story did not have to be told. Without his efforts, there would be no story to tell. Both were responsible for the con. He knew what he wanted and went after it. She needed a couple of divorces and to become a Jehovah's Witness, in order to learn right from wrong, how to stick up for herself and be happy. Talk about being gullible.

Tikkun follows an ultra-orthodox scholar who is trying to find the inner truth about himself as a believer, after experiencing death itself. I physically can't rate this film until I watch it again, because I'm not even sure if I like it or not...I'm not even sure about what I even watched. It is very challenging and complicated at times, and I still have to figure out how much of it is actually art, and how much of it is just some pretentious bullocks.
An eerie and uncomfortable feeling was crawling under my skin throughout this whole experience, it is genuinely psychologically disturbing, it isn't perfect though, its most substantial flaw is easily the cheap looking CGI, but that is understandable and forgiveable considering the budget.
I can't really recommend this to just anyone though, it kinda felt like a mix between Antichrist and Synecdoche, New York, but without their huge budgets.

A Woman Under The Influence - 10/10

Below are questions for those who have seen it, along with a lot of my observations with spoilers obviously.

Questions for those who have seen it...
-Did Carson Cross rape Mabel? Not only was she piss drunk, but he forced himself on her, and then it fades out. It might be a reason why she thinks he's Nick in the morning, or because he's the only other guy to have slept in the same bed.. Maybe it also shows how little she sees of Nick (especially in a fragile state of mind).. Does anyone else find it extra conformist when Carson doesn't mind raping Mabel, but when he finds out she is involved, he makes it seems like THAT is where he draws the line, even though she says "Get off me" "Cut that out" over and over..

(also, when Carson introduces himself, Mabel says "I know" but he seems dumbfounded.. Does he just chase women since he's loaded with money? He talks to himself saying he should know better, "Divorced twice")

-Does anyone doubt that Nick is the really dangerous guy?

-When the kids temporarily come back with their grandma.. As they leave, Mabel whispers (while she's looking at the window) --

-Is "Dr" Zephyr the worst? He's causing so many problems with his deceptive passive-aggressive threats, as he does it with a smile, soft pace.. After she comes back, he's always making suggestions, and then when Nick's mom proposes something immediately, he'll echo her..

-Nick's mom.... In the first half, before she's committed, SHE is the bother. When she comes back, for the most part, she's the one who handles it all. Nick thinks of a party (silly idea) and his mom tells him "Coca-Cola?" -- after Nick says they don't have drinks "It's a party, right?" - I think he depends on his mother too much for approval, but constantly seeking society's approval... He only seems to care about appearances, what co-workers might be talking about. And then when one guy is NOT, he's accused of being a silent ******** (and then the guy is injured).

-"No one's gonna get pneumonia when I'M the father" -- that's all that counts, eh?.....

Mabel goes through the trouble to have her mom takes the kids, even though it makes her anxious. At work, Nick is overworked (a big source of trouble) and feels Mabel is mad at him, because she's been left alone. The minute a co-worker asks if she'd climb the walls (Nick cancels their date night after the city needs him after a water mane breaks), he's the first to come at her (or his) defense.. "She cooks, she cleans, takes her of the kids, what's crazy about that?" and then when the co-worker tosses it aside, Nick plays contrarian and says "She could get hit by a car!"

Spaghetti Dinner
-After him breaking their date night (which is probably once a year anyway it seems), the first thing he does is bring 10 guys and tells his wife they are hungry. Mabel innocently makes a guy or two uncomfortable because of her curiosity and playfulness, but Nick is the one who once again loses his temper, telling her to sit her ass down - and you see that familiar look of sadness on her face.... Things are interrupted when Nick's mother calls, complaining of a pain, but won't see the doctor, so she's probably just lonely, wanting his attention, I love the part on the phone when Nick says "Do you want me to bring Mabel?" and then we find she didn't. And Mabel lets her guests know she doesn't care for his mom...When they leave, Mabel is frustrated, and to alleviate the tension, Nick says "You didn't do anything wrong" - and then she's back to smiling, constantly seeking his approval. She goes on to bed "Nick, I'll do whatever you want. I can be whoever you want me to be." and goes on...

-When Mabel picks up the kids at school, she doesn't have a watch, so she asks a lady with a watch. The woman (around her age) is cold, and just walks past, just as the others -- no one wants to help her. It angered me when I first saw it, since I think there is a loss of humanization, and Mabel expresses her angry for a few seconds until the bus arrives. She even thanks the bus driver -- which someone (who saw this with me a few years ago) thought THAT was weird.... When they get home, Mabel asks her kids what they think of her. "Am I mean?" she asks. Her oldest child says "You're nice, pretty, and nervous"... I also think with all the timely stuff that happens causes her anxiety to be elevated -- so she dances like a swan -- big deal, that's considered "crazy" in this movie, in 1974.

-Mr. Jansen and the Party... You can tell from the start he wants to drop his much younger kids and leave. Mabel tries to make everyone happy, and even says "Are you uncomfortable?" after he says he has things to do... Mr. Jansen smiles and comes in.. To make him happy, she suggests the children do a rendition of "Swan Lake" (since it was on the radio).. "Mr. Jansen, they just DIED for you!" (since he isn't amused). And then Harold Jansen tells Mabel he's not sure if he should leave his kids with her.... Again, phone interruption. Nick calls and probably drops everything to come home after hearing there is a Mister at their house.... Like life, you can come in at a random point and things aren't what they seem to be. Maria is running around naked, and when Grandma won't leave her alone with the questioning, she assumes and brings up "Mommy?" and of course the 2-yr old is going to say whatever it takes to escape the interrogation. And then Nick sees Harold in a bedroom, and Nick knocks Mabel out and then starts a fight with Harold.. Normal, eh?

Then Nick calls Dr. Zephyr, and his flaky behavior causes Mabel to be paranoid, and then Nick's mother goes off and off.. Mabel doesn't help the situation by implying and asking if morphine is a drug, then brings up Vitamin C as a "fellow pill". I saw her drink once, as she waited for Nick... They all seem to be teaming up against Mabel, and this gets to her obviously. I was always surprised that Nick doesn't do anything when his mother says "You had a man in this house last night" and goes on to say all the stories Nick tells his mother about Mabel, how she's empty inside.

Right before she's committed, Mabel tells "We're a team" and then mentions getting pregnant, and how she said how the marriage would work, since she was already pregnant.... And that's probably how this all started... Nick was probably a jock in high school (there are trophies, and the kids are too young) and Mabel is very pretty.. Life is circumstantial, and when the libido is high, things happen -- they had sex, she got pregnant, and they were sorta stuck with each other.. Another reason I think Nick was quick to call to have her committed. Yeah, he's frustrated, but it's probably being overworked, but of course, he takes it out on whoever is around.

On Day 1 of watching the kids, the first thing he does is take them out of school, scaring the principal as well... He brings a friend from work, and takes them to the beach. He seems to yell at them, in my words it seems like "You kids will have fun if I have to kill you all"... To make his life easier, and so his kids can "sleep like rocks" he lets them all have beer, and they get sick.. I love the moment when they are in bed, dizzy. He is alone for the first night, and wants companionship, and tries and tries, but won't get it, until his daughter finally understands and suggests he lay down next to her in a moment in the conscience of a child..

6 Months Laters
-Inviting a bunch of people, including one guy (Joe Namath-look-a-like) who is only looking to get laid (I don't know anyone here, don't know the WIVES)... But Nick's mother does the correcting, and the dirty work... When Mabel asks to see the kids, Nick and Dr. Zephyr kinda object due to possible excitement. When Nick's mother says "She can see them" she does. Even later on when Mabel asks Nick something, after saying no, she asks his mother, the real boss.... In the next scene, Mabel asks politely if they can leave, so she can go to bed. She even asks again, saying she can't talk with everyone there... Finally, in desperation, she asks if her father will stand up for her. He physically gets up, not understanding until Mabel's mother tells him.. We also see a lot of hostility between Mabels' father and Nick, though most of it is non-verbal.. Again, Nick is yelling at everyone to be normal, and to Mabel in private "BE YOURSELF"

-Anyone notice that every time Mabel asks Nick if he loves her, he won't answer. The only time he says it is when he wants her committed and another time he wants to coerce her into doing what he wants, and he knows how to take advantage of the situation by using "love".

(P.S. - During the movie, Nick threatens to kill everyone in sight at least 3-4 times)

A practice film for Pink Flamingos. Just as offensive, but certain bits are over done and too long. And the film probably should have ended 10 minutes earlier. Say what you want about Pink Flamingos, it does what Multiple Maniacs tried to do and did it so much better. Still worth seeing by any fan of John Waters.

Paper Towns

http://www.etonline.com/photo/2015/06/24155916/640_paper_towns_trailer_margo.jpg

Quentin has an okay life. He has good friends, he's doing well in school and he hasn't had to go through any particular hardships. He did have a crush on a girl who stopped talking to him, but got over it. Until one night when she takes him on an adventure which has him feeling more about her than ever...

I went into this movie with mild hopes. The premise intrigued me, and I remembered The Longest Engagement, an absolutely excellent romantic mystery drama which had everything I could have asked for.

With this one, it did have some of it but not all.

I'll get to what I liked about it ar first, because I do have a lot of good things to say about it. Even though this movie is flawed, it's still kinda underrated. The characters are likable, especially Quentin. Nat Wolff who played him also was in another teen drama the year before (which I hear is very solid), and I thought he was the best in the movie. Like sure, he got some really cheesy dialogue sometimes, but he managed to do the best even with those. I think out of everyone he showed the most emotional range and felt very realistic in how he talked and how he depicted several mental states. Q's (it's his nickname) friends are very charming and instead of your typical annoying teen friends you see in movies they were genuinely nice and dare I say it, loving. The two girls who get on the road trip are interesting in their own ways too. Now of course, the second most important person to talk about. First off, Cara Delevigne was pretty good in the role. She didn't quite match up to Wolff, but had just the right amount of devious and enchanting presence at the same time needed. I'll get more into her character later on, since that's another story.

The story is pretty fine. It's after all what peaked my interest in the first place. The plot however not so much. It kinda feels like the movie drags on sometimes, with short stops which kinda makes it stand still. After a whole it does get going again, but there was maybe at least 10 minutes in the middle or so where I feel like it didn't really go anywhere. But you know, it's still a nice little road trip adventure, and I enjoy seeing all these friends interact with each other. The best dialogue comes from when they are just talking casually like buddies do.

The directing was pretty decent. I wouldn't say it blew me away, but some scenes felt pretty atmospheric, like when Quentin and Margo are dancing on the highest floor of a tower looking at the view.

There are some funny moments occassionally. They won't make you laugh out loud, this is not a comedy. But there's a good amount of chuckles or smileworthy moments, mostly from Dan.

The music is very bland, sad to say. I could predict pretty much every cue. The opening tune was pretty nice however.

Here are my problems with Paper Towns.

There were a couple of clichés you see in teen movies that felt a bit hamfisted. Like the importance of friendship, how you are doing something for the last time in high school (this was pointed out very explicitly), can't miss the prom yaddayadda. What is it with teen movies and making proms such a huge deal? They are fun, but it's not the worst thing in the world if you miss it. Besides, Quentin's friends still had girlfriends at least who they can hang out with any time they want. And yet they are extremely antsy for the prom like it's the biggest thing ever, instead of staying like friends and helping Quentin out. I don't know, it's just something we've seen a million times.

In the beginning, Margo is right away a huge deal. So why couldn’t we get more time establishing her and Quentin's friendship? The scenes where they connected were nice, but before that particular night (which trailers really liked to show) we could have gotten at least a few minutes more of development.

And finally, the ending. I know what you are thinking. "Oh, a movie doesn't always have a happy ending". Well you're right, but it's not about a happy or a sad ending. It's about an ending which makes sense and feels right in the context of the movie. This is what really doesn't make sense: Margo sends all these clues, like "do this, go here". And he does (although he doesn't find her where he expected her to be). But here's the thing. Apparently they weren't clues he was supposed to follow! DUDE. WHAT THE **** DID YOU EXPECT? You give this guy a time of his life, teaches him lessons about getting out of his comfort zone, and when he finally finds you, you ask what the hell he's doing there in a very condenscending manner. Well duh, he followed you because you made it look like he was supposed to! It just doesn't make any sense at all. And still, when she's about to go again, she asks if he wants to come with her. WHAT? You didn't even want him to find you! And now she still wants him by her side. Look, she's not in love with him. I understand. But they are still friends, aren't they? Quentin's lack of feelings when going back first confused me, but then it made sense. She just tricked him, of course he shouldn't have any reason to care about her. This is not some melancholic meaningful ending, it's pure manipulation.

Well, crap. This is why I don't like overthinking movies (you can probably notice this review doesn't have planning behind it, I'm just writing as I go along). I was gonna give it a 7, but that ending makes it more worth a 6 instead. And come to think of it, it's not even that underrated either. The ending makes this a disappointment.

A Seperation (2011) - 4 - I was in the middle of writing a review for this until I accidentally deleted it...oh well...great film, but definitely not as perfect as some claim.

45 Years (2015) - 3.5 - I like this as well, it's quite effective in its approach of a "vulnerable love". It shows how shocking and sad the truth can be, and how a simple information can change your whole perspective of your life.

Right Now, Wrong Then (2015) - 3 -The only reason why I checked this film out is because of its director, he has an upcoming 2017 movie that was selected for Cannes festival. It was good overall...but that's about it.

I agree. It has its flaws, but when you consider all of its great qualities, flaws be damned. It was such a fun film and it did it without skimping on the horror. That earned big points with me. I also really liked The Loved Ones, so with that and this, I'm definitely keeping a much closer eye on any of his future projects from now on.

Joseph Cotton plays a struggling painter whose luck changes when he meets a little girl played by Jennifer Jones. The movie turns into a haunting love story. How can it be a love story if there's a little girl involved? Well there's a fantasy element and she grows up fast. It's the fantasy part that probably keeps me from completely loving this movie, but it is crucial to the story. Very good performances from the two leads, and an outstanding performance from some lady named Ethel Barrymore, who plays an art dealer.

A crude imitation of a David Lynch film, in which some potentially interesting concepts and camera techniques are let down by poor acting, badly-written dialogue and several scenes that are clearly based on ones from Lynch's filmography.

It was absolutely fantastic. The sexual undertones make the film a very different type of horror film. I'm surprised more people haven't seen it considering it was Christopher Lee's favourite film (Very good actor in the film). The last scene was genuinely scary.

This is from the same director who did the more well known 40's movies Cat People and Out of the Past. I was really hoping to completely love this movie, but I'd still put it up with those other two. This is obviously not the typical zombie film that dishes out the gore. This one deals with voodoo and is high on atmosphere and mood. The story and performances are solid, and there's some great music, in particular one creepy song. It's less than 70 minutes long, and even people who don't care for horror may like it.

I picked this randomly off the noirs list, and I came to find out that it's also on the Ebert list. It's very short at less than 70 minutes, and there's not really that much to it. A piano player wants to get to Hollywood to see his girl. He hitches a ride and then things happen. It's a little rough around the edges, which is understandable considering it was made in only 6 days. It is a fun watch, mainly due to a lot of unintentionally funny dialogue. There's a dame who enters the picture about halfway through who I thought was a riot.

Easily digested, well written and I'm a sucker for 80's time machine movies. William Hurt's character felt shortchanged, he was never really given any redemptive qualities and was just there to be the movie's dartboard.

The film didn't contain any jump scares from what I recall, but it still managed to be extremely stupid, at some points I literally started yelling at the "characters" for their actions. The writing was pretty cheesy, and the average acting (AT BEST), didn't do anything to help it.
The movie was pretty alright for the first hour of it (mind you it's only 80 minutes long), but once it got to the climax, it just....I have no words...like...you just have to see the stupidity and the ridiculousness for yourself to believe it.

The Marine 5: Battleground - WWE Studios' franchise brings back Mike "The Miz" Mizanin as Jake Carter. In his third outing, Carter is now an EMT who learns his latest patient is wanted by The Lost Legion, a biker gang, after the patient is involved in a hit on their leader. The film features not only Mizanin, but a total of five other WWE stars, including Mizanin's real-life wife Maryse in a cameo appearance; with Bo Dallas, Heath Slater, Curtis Axel, and Naomi as members of the biker gang who are after Carter's patient, played by Nathan Mitchell. The film is set first in the parking lot of a closed amusement park until Carter uses the amusement park to his advantage to take on members of the gang.

For this franchise, IMO, Mizanin has improved with each installment and it's clear that if there will be a 6th installment, chances are we will see Carter again.

The director of this film, James Nunn, directed the well-received WWE action film Eliminators starring Scott Adkins and former WWE star Wade Barrett and also directed another Adkins film, Green Street Hooligans: Underground.

Final Rating: B (for its throwback style B-movie action)

Marathon Man (Schlesinger, 1976) 2
http://i.imgur.com/jXuYovu.jpg

Dustin Hoffman's 70s work has yet to thoroughly impress me. His character in Midnight Cowboy comes the closest I suppose, but neither Marathon Man nor Straw Dogs were the home runs I was anticipating. On this occasion, I believe the shortcomings can be chalked up to William Goldman's adaptation of his own novel. I say that despite The Princess Bride being a glaring counter example.

This on-the-run thriller keeps getting bogged down in subplots that aren't essential to the (lack of) character development and work against the kind of momentum you want out of a movie like this.

There's supposed to be this wound that won't heal regarding the father's death, but the flashbacks and essays don't go anywhere despite the final shot of the film melodramatically circling back to the issue. They almost do during the showdown when Szell accuses Babe of lacking the nerve to shoot him down, with his father's gun mind you, but by that point in the movie Babe has already dispatched of at least one other person. The trepidation is an artificial way to prompt tension and portray growth.

Only slightly less contrived is the sequence of Szell trying to figure out the worth of his goods when he stumbles upon not one, but two people in the hustle and bustle of New York City who recognize him as a war criminal. The lady who spots him at random is killed by a car shortly before Szell murders the other in broad day by slitting hit throat on the sidewalk. It's far too happenstance to be taken seriously though I suppose the movie establishes that precedent when the prime mover of the film's conflict is two old men going at each other in a Death Race when they both drive headfirst into an oil tanker.

Maybe this stuff reads differently in the novelization, but to me it falls short of entertaining shlock and sits more along the lines of clumsy, inept drama.

nobody wouldv'e survived in that fire

But like monnoM said, which I agreed with him, what I liked about it outweighed what I didn't ie I thought it was original, creepy and I loved the heavy guitar riffs and lots more besides.

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

This franchise is kind of like the concept of the human centipede movies...

It starts off as something edible and then it begins to turn into sh*t. With every new entry, it seems to be taking in the same sh*t over and over again, until the newest result is just plopping to the ground as the oldest, stinkiest sh*tpile of them all. The plot in these things are as thin as diarrhea... and as messy too I can tell ya.

God, I loved this even more on second watch. I had attempted a Live By Night watch but wasn't in the mood for it, switched to Gone Girl. Thoroughly entertained again. I'm not sure I'm allowed to popcorn rate it even though my ratings are often emotional ones.

Flesh and Blood (1985)

Hmmmm

I don't really know what I just watched.

There was a decent story of love, betrayal, revenge, corruption and power, that has been buried beneath some of the worst acting I have ever seen.
It was almost like it was purposefully bad acting.
It looked like something from 'Monty python and the Holy Grail' or 'The Princess Bride' without the comedy dialogue.
What I mean by that is that as with Python the actions and voices are exaggerated and you can tell that it is 'tongue in cheek' acting.
The characters and acting was comedic, but there was little funny about the dialogue.

A beautiful Yamada work! This is one of the best samurai movies ever!
Hiroyuki Sanada (The guy who kicked Tom Cruise's butt in The Last Samurai) was great in his role! The soundtrack by Isao Tomita was great too. :)

Ghost in the Shell (2017) - 2, maybe 2.5

Not exactly good, but my feelings about it are complicated enough to potentially warrant a return to reviewing.

I didn't have high expectation due to the fact that this is a sequel of a classic.

It turned out to be very solid good, glad to see those characters are back to action.

I don't care about sh*tting on a movie I don't like, but don't think I didn't have your coming reaction in my mind when I didn't like this at all either. :( I really hoped so, especially since the opening reverse slow-mo credits scene was kind of beautiful and fitting for the genre. They kind of ruined that by playing it back again but whatever...

Anyways, I have come this far. I see no reason not to finish the series while there is still only, supposedly, this final chapter left. At least I can do that in your honor, Iro. :p

Captain Fantastic (2016)

Had heard all of the hype around this film but had never got around to taking it in.
Saw that it was on 'Amazon Prime instant' this afternoon so got involved.

Summary
It was a decent film, with a lot of interesting facets but overall, I am not sure what the overall point of the story was.
It was good and I largely enjoyed it, but for me it didn't live up to the hype.

I picked this randomly off the Cannes' winners list. It's got an 8.1 IMDb rating, 100% Totton Tomatoes, and was an influence to legendary director Martin Scorsese. I have struggled to connect with many of the films from the Italian neorealist era, and this was no exception. I liked the story involving a resistance fighter trying to evade the Germans, but my interest only went so far despite some good moments. As with a lot of older foreign movies, I enjoyed being thrown into another time and place. That was the best thing about the movie for me, although there was nothing specific about it that I disliked.

Also Sienna Guillory, yum

I can totally understand that. The self parody was obvious but still I didn't really connect with.

For me, I love the F&F movies and the self parody aspect is one I have come to really enjoy as well, so different franchise same principles.

The RE films are so far gone from the original flick. Each one has given diminishing returns for my interest. The one where they brought everyone back and it was a simulation or something really was dire.

The one where they brought everyone back and it was a simulation or something really was dire.Afterlife is the worst one, where they're in a tower and we're introduced to squid zombies and a big dude with an axe. Most egregious is the incredibly lame fight with Whitaker aka Cardboard Villain with Sunglasses who frowns a lot. Even watching it ironically while intoxicated it's really bad.

The one you're referring to, Retribution, was better in my opinion because it played like a greatest hits compilation of previous films, and in many ways seemed to poke fun at them. It's bad but fun.

But in both films, what really annoys me are the gimmicky 3D effects. Oh wow, a slo-mo shot of Alice with glass flying at the audience, talk about eye-rolling. It's supposed to be a movie not a theme park ride.

Anyway, I genuinely love the first three RE flicks, especially the second one. It's a hoot.
