Jodorowski's Dune (2013)

This is one of those ultra fascinating documentaries that most people will not see. It's the story of director Alejandro Jodorowsky, along with a dream team of supremely talented production, acting and music people, who in 1975 attempted the ultimate cinematic portrayal of Frank Herbert's 1965 popular sci-fi novel, Dune.

However the various studios were skittish of the production costs and overruns, so they declined financing. Dino De Laurentis eventually bought the rights from Jodorowski's people, and produced another Dune movie treatment in 1984, directed by David Lynch. The movie was a semi-disaster, and a box office bomb.

Many of Jodorowki's ideas and scenes were "utilized" in other productions like Star Wars, Alien, and the like.

Watching this attractive documentary, one only wonders at what an absorbing and innovative film Dune might have been with the Jodorowsky crew in control.

I remember you saying you had this on your list. Good to see someone else struggled with this, well, sorry I guess.

There's a good idea here, but it was just too hard for me to watch. I grew up watching my mother care for her ailing parents so it had me intrigued, but they didn't manage to do anything with the idea.Have you seen Still Alice (2014) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3316960/) I thought that was pretty great and a very honest looking at Alzheimers and the effects it has on family members.

I've seen it:

Jodorowsky's Dune (2013)

Alejandro Jodorowsky director of El Topo (1970) and The Holy Mountain (1973) is the subject matter. He's quite the character too. Call him a dreamer, call him a visionary or call him an ex hippie kook. If he had his way, his film Dune, would have changed the world...or so he says.

....you will be entertained as you learn a lot about the film making process.

I have been watching films but not really been able to face posting much although I did finish this series last night. A series about the rap business isn't really something that would usually draw my attention but I noticed ScarletLion and Camo posting about it here so thought I would give it a try. What a revelation! This has to be one of my favourite shows of all time now, although I do have a few. The series tackles more than the music industry, investing in many social issues whilst doing so hilariously. Such a great cast too that you get to know each one so although Donald Glover is probably the star here, he's not the main act. Talking of cast, a special mention has to go to my favourite member, Darius, played by Lakeith Stanfield. If anyone disputes that he is the best character in the series, watch Teddy Perkins episode again and come back to me, that was serious filming right there, I must have watched that back at least 4 times.

Paper Boi, Paper Boi, Paper Boi.

Easy 5

Dude  We have an Atlanta thread, best show. And yes Teddy Perkins is incredible and Darius is the best character. Love how in the next episode he calms down the girl having a panic attack, that's when i realized he was my favourite.

The Game directed by David Fincher
http://www.trbimg.com/img-5065ea28/turbine/la-so-the-game.jpg-20120926/600
3.5 - I was actually planning on giving this a half popcorn lower of a rating, but those last 15 minutes sure made up for the preceding mediocrity.

I Only Want You to Love Me directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UKJazXB_dR8/VN5HjPVXsGI/AAAAAAAAFQg/LX_99GAWTwI/s1600/vlc00007w.png
3.5 - Finally! A film by Fassbinder that I like. I always knew that I'd find something of his for me, since I could clearly see how talented the guy is, just by looking at the shot compositions in his movies. Although, the story being what it is, definitely made it easier for me to connect, so I wonder if i could only like Fassbinder when he is specifically tailored towards my taste.

Pariah directed by Dee Rees
https://www.theyoungfolks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Pariah-movie-still-final1.jpg
3.5 - Not gonna lie, I got a little teary-eyed at the end of the movie. Overall, it's pretty solid all the way through, with the last act being especially garnished.

Let the Right One In directed by Tomas Alfredson
https://img.cinemablend.com/cb/a/2/e/a/1/b/a2ea1b4703432350645aac9c4c962c6c911fec8adf68a91d714bbbed8e316745.jpg
4 - Beautiful. Effective. Subtle. The remake could never hold a candle to the achievements of this original modern horror masterpiece.

Marathon Man. A postgrad student (Dustin Hoffman), who is oblivious to the activities of his older brother (Roy Scheider), who he believes to be an ordinary businessman, finds himself dragged into a terrifying conspiracy involving millions in stolen diamonds and an ageing Nazi war criminal (Laurence Olivier) in this cracking mid-70s thriller. I've seen this once before like 20 years ago, but I couldn't really remember it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great film. Looks fantastic on Blu ray as well.
I guarantee you that I would never go to a dentist who looked like Laurence Olivier......:D

I actually still consider this 1979 film scary in some ways. Brolin's eyes and face when he starts becoming possessed, the creature outside of the window scare,...it definitely has atmosphere to spare.

Please Stand By (2017) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4652650/)

I really enjoyed this, and you don't have to be a Star Trek fan to get it either. Though it's a must see for fans of the original ST show.

Dakota Fanning is Wendy an autistic young woman who lives in a care center. She hears on TV that Paramount Studios is having a Star Trek scrip writing contest and so she writes her script. Then she only has a couple of days left to get it to the studio...and there's a holiday, so the mail won't work. She's been told not to leave the city block that she lives on, but she hops on a bus from San Francisco to L.A. Which triggers a search for her, by big sister and her care provider played by Toni Collette.

As a Star Trek fan I dug the occasional references that she would make, but this is not about Star Trek...It's about an autistic woman trying to find her way in the busy, noisy world. And that can be scary to anyone.

The road trip part was most of the movie and I enjoyed her adventures on the road and the way she dealt with problems of no money and no place to stay.

I've never heard of this movie, but as a Star Trek fan, it sounds like a movie that I'll have to see.

Black Panther (2018) (Dir. Ryan Coogler) 1
https://i.imgur.com/nyJi5yv.jpg

So Killmonger is bad because of his imperial tactics... but the movie has you cheering for the actual CIA? Meanwhile Black Panther is a privileged aristocrat who thinks capitalism can fix the terrors it wrought lol. I applaud Coogler for making a Marvel film that felt like its own thing, but beyond the shaky effects and melodrama, the message of the movie is pretty terrible. I'm glad children of color can see themselves represented and celebrated on screen but the real heroes of the Civil Rights Movement were revolutionaries while this is a movie about preserving a hierarchy. I'm not down with that. Long live Killmonger.

Never really been interested in seeing this movie until right now

I always enjoy dystopian movies to see what kind of ideas can emerge from a simple concept. This one is based on the human race becoming almost entirely infertile, with the exception of the focal point of the movie. She is a younger girl (young being relative since the youngest person in the world is now 18 years old) who must flee a warzone to try and save her baby. I was engaged for the entire movie, but it didn't do much to explain some of the reasoning behind why society came to this in the first place. The movie moved along nicely without certain plot details, but it takes away from the overall feeling of the movie after reaching the ending.

I always liked the first half most. When I first saw it, I actually wanted that to continue and didn't like the shift. But then I realized what they were going for, and the second half has grown on me.

Exactly how much of a surprise is the vampire element supposed to be anyway? I didn't get around to seeing it until about a decade after its release and I was already aware that it had vampires in it so I wasn't exactly disappointed when they showed up, besides which I never thought there was anything special enough about the first half that it was thoroughly undermined by the second half.

I don't if he is joking or being serious? I can almost turn that movie off after the Twister starts. Well, not until after Selma Hayek's dance number.

I'm probably stuck in the 90's and enjoy the stuff like True Romance and the likes. The dialogue and Harvey Keitel are great and its pretty much gone when all hell breaks loose.

Why would I joke about it? The first half plays like either Tarantino self-parody or a bad imitation to the point that I'm almost glad the vampires show up.

You've always seemed to have a sense of humor. I haven't seen it in a while, but the Harvey Keitel stuff, being a conflicted former man of the cloth. The uneasy relationship with his kids. It appears to have a little depth too, whereas the end is a "backed into the corner" scenario that didn't seem like anything new.

Yeah, good point, this could readily be read as a joke I suppose (but would you believe I put it on a "worst 100" list forever ago?). In any case, Keitel is definitely one of the better parts of the film but I never felt like the film did all that much with his character anyway and any sense of depth was overlooked in trying to make Clooney look halfway-sympathetic (especially when the film emphasised the interplay between the two, which felt like a mixed bag as a result). I wonder how much this can be put down to Tarantino trying to flesh out somebody else's treatment rather than crafting his own such story because it's really not playing to his strengths.

Even in my rudimentary Spanish I found this compelling without subtitles, both leads are excellent. There is a case that both detectives want to break for different reasons. I know it sounds a cliche but their differences do make them more than the sum of their parts, forming a bond. The case itself is intriguing but its the interaction of the world weary pro and the principled, black-listed main protagonist that make this so enthralling. Very atmospheric. A 9/10

This was a much better movie than Ex Machina in my opinion. I thought the story was perfect in showcasing how an AI could effectively replace human interaction, while still presenting philosophical matters that weigh the pros and cons of it. Joaquin Phoenix was superb in this role. The only thing that prevents it from being a 5/5 is probably the replayability. It would be hard to rewatch this again casually, since there aren't too many standalone "entertainment" type moments.

Grim story about a Dad and girl (well, 17) living and working in a remote Petrol Station in the Scottish Highlands (unspecified). There seems to be a sexual undercurrent between them both but mostly it seems he's a sad man who has nurtured Shell and home-taught her and knows he cant keep her forever. It seems she is the only person who knows about his epilepsy and theres the rub. Great performances from Joseph Mawle and Chloe Pirrrie. 7/10.

The sheltering sky (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1990) - 3

Well, it was not a lot of fun, but I'm sort of glad to have started with this long-postponed director. This is an existential drama about routine and relationship dynamics quite badly disguised as an adventure, and while the concept is interesting and the movie appears to know at least superficially what it tries to reach, I think it doesn't fully understand, or show to understand, the mechanisms to reach it. The structure is arbitrary and disperse, it seems that the movie just wanders throughout, and way too often the reflection is not clearly aligned to the narration or the emotion of the moment. Still, it has beautiful scenery and a cinematography that at the very least looks unconventional, and there are some very intense sections in the movie, which with its flaws and the lack of a single effective and cohesive view, is interesting and engaging due to the themes it suggests and the somewhat unique flavor the movie has.

Maverick. Mel Gibson is a fast talking card-sharp trying to get enough cash together to enter a high stakes poker game, but someone seems determined to keep him out. Jodie Foster and James Garner co-star in this entertaining mid 90s tongue in cheek Western that doesn't reinvent the wheel, but is amusing and likeable throughout. There's a great cameo from Danny Glover as a bank robber who seems to - almost - recognise Gibson, to the strains of the Lethal Weapon music. "I'm getting too old for this s**t!"

Apostasy (2017) (Dir. Daniel Kokotajlo) 4
https://i.imgur.com/IhnHaJj.jpg

An understated crisis of faith illustrated by the faces of the afflicted, Apostasy isn't a diatribe against a less accepted religious sect so much as a re-framing of a traditional story with a less familiar theological backing allowing the viewer to feel the alienation of its adherents in a time of duress. We are less willing to accept the equally arbitrary traditions and taboos as reasonable when we've been outside the sphere of conditioning like that of more mainstream Christian teachings. That device allows us to connect with the conflicted women at the heart of picture seamlessly, wordlessly as the camera steadies on their tortured expressions with eyes that gaze into the abyss of doubt. The young with apprehension or overconfidence, the old and wise with denial insulating them from a life shattering revelation. It is a film about their interior lives which tastefully vocalizes inner-thoughts occasionally and legibly visualizes those thoughts often through quiet, meditative performances recalling the days of silent film when the entire face spoke as loud as any mouth has since.

Braven (2018) (Dir. Lin Oeding) 3
https://i.imgur.com/AXPtFrH.png

A real throwback to those easy going action flicks with some heart to them and lots of silly violence. Mamoa does just fine standing in for The Rock or Arnold Schwarzenegger or whoever would have gotten this role 10 or 20 years ago. Pretty standard fair, but there is one peculiar quirk to it.

I can't be the only one who noticed some weird race/gender coded stuff going on with Mamoa using mostly rustic melee weapons and his wife using a bow & arrow. I thought I was reaching, but then Mamoa's character very purposefully chooses an axe over a shotgun at one point. Hell, the cover of the film shows Mamoa with a recurve bow he used for like 5 seconds. It's harmless, ultimately, and makes sense considering the power dynamic of our protagonists, but also conveniently aligns with native/feminine stereotypes. I mean, there's almost no reference to Mamoa's race in this but there's still a scene where he sees a deer run and has Tonto's sixth sense to know danger is afoot. It's subtle, and you could easily chalk it up to marketing in a post-Hunger Games world or something, but it's definitely there.

Perry outs himself as a fashionable Brooklynite in this Phillip Rothian growth spurt where the gimmick rests in tenuous social connections spurring conversations only the audience can piece together entirely. ARP heads some criticisms off at the pass with self depreciating acknowledgment of his Linklater-like indulgence in flowery dialogues that come off more like monologues contorted to take place conversationally but self-aware jabs don't mitigate their contrivance. Just write a book next time. Or don't because it's a game of telephone for people who host podcasts from a Brownstone. Super Dark Times (2017) (Dir. Kevin Phillips) 3
https://i.imgur.com/ixksoaw.jpg

Phillips captures youth so convincingly in its vulgar and insecure infamy before turning this coming-of-age flick into a thriller that I almost wish he didn't. The bookends of the picture clue us into the goal of the story which is in looking at masculine and feminine roles in relation to acts of violence. Despite the opening and closing of the film clarifying this pursuit, the actual story never really articulates anything of note relating to that thesis. Instead, the structure does a competent film a disservice by telling us what it was supposed to do and reminding us how short it fell in trying to do it. Frankly, the age of the characters doesn't make it any easier to juggle everything. It's hard to damn gender tropes while also documenting their manifestation in a time of hormonal unrest. It's also hard as a viewer to discern actual gender driven toxicity from the fact that our characters are all underdeveloped kids steeped in ignorance and prodded by haywire physiology.

Phillips is clearly a capable artist, and his chemistry with cinematographer Eli Born in establishing the intangibles of the 90s and evoking tone is striking, so hopefully whatever comes next gels a little better as a whole.

Strangely, I didn't bat an eye as the ending was unfolding. Instead, I was fully engrossed, and nothing that happened took me out of it. Of course, I can't articulate why it worked for me and not for most other people. But I do know I really enjoyed that flick.

Watched the 'Spy who dumped me'. Terrible film with few laughs, though some of the action scenes were really well shot.

Also watched 'Mission Impossible Fallout'. A proper entertainer that. Would rank that as the third best of the franchise, after the first and Rogue nation.

I thought I was going to like this one. It's a melodramatic tear jerker that I found very upsetting to watch. I get that it's on the passions list, but it's also on the cheers list which seems like a sick joke to me. Excellent performances from Bette Davis, George Brent, and Geraldine Fitzgerald, and plus it has Humphrey Bogart and even Ronald Reagan. I thought it was terrible and I loved it.

What did I just watch?...In a dystopian future where births are restrained if the genetics of the parents don't line up admirably, some people go against the grain and try to have babies anyway. Samantha Morton and Tim Robbins acting was adequate, but the storyline was bland. For nearly the whole movie, it just felt like a run of the mill love story with weird camera shots and strange nuances. I'll admit I wasn't ever really bored, but I just can't get over how uneventful the movie felt.

Another entry by Kieślowski, that further solidifies him as one of my favourite artists. This might actually just be episode 0 of the director's Dekalog, as it felt like an expanded and an enlarged version of those short tales. It's just as impactful and powerful too. Normally, I would complain about the political elements in No End, just like I did for Blind Chance, but this time, they were far less intimidating, and way more engaging.

One-Eyed Jacks (1961)

In the getaway after robbing a Mexican bank, bandits Karl Malden and Marlon Brando have to split up... Malden gets the horse and the money, Brando's left abandoned in the desert where he's arrested and jailed in Sonora prison for five years. Once out, Rio (Brando) scans the taverns and barrooms for news of his old friend who double-crossed him. Quality kickass western flick.

Let me state this, right off the bat. This is a VERY generous rating I expect no one here would give this film anything higher. This is low brow comedy, it's dumb, it's repetitive and one-note. Yet I laughed. I admit it, I laughed at the absurdity of it, ignored the logistics and was pleasantly surprised by the natural acting from at least one of the actors. This is a film that one watches on an afternoon where they want to kill time. A film that one watches who doesn't mind dumb gross humour. This film is not sophisticated at all. Now let me tell you what it's about.

5 friends go hiking together, get drunk, party and have a good time. When one of those friends jokingly plays with a knife, he accidentally cuts his own penis off. Bleeding and in agony, they scramble to get help. Help does indeed arrive and they airlift him out to the nearest hospital.

...but they forgot the penis. Now his friends must scramble to get the penis to the hospital in time to reattach the penis before it's too late. Wild shenanigans ensues on their journey. What shenanigans? Well, one sequence has a snake bite the severed penis and one guy has to suck the poison out. That's the type of juvenile humour this film has. Am I embarrassed to say I laughed? No. It's dumb, I know this, you'll know it too. But knowing what type of film this was helped me enjoy it a bit more.

The cast is full of unknowns with Geraldine Viswanathan being the highlight. She has a natural fluidity about her that doesn't come off as acting. The same can't be said for everyone else that try hard to fill their cliched acting roles, but the overall sense of enjoyment isn't faltered because of them.

It is what it is. What else can I say? I as expecting a horrible dumpster fire of garbage, but was surprised at how 'okay' it was. High praise? Of course not. Mediocre praise and a very generous rating.

TAG

https://zayzay.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/tag-movie-2018-990x557.jpg

Okay so I knew going in that this was a movie somewhat loosely based on a true story about a group of guys that kept playing a game of tag well after their childhood years. Simple plot, simple comedy, simple minded fun. I have to say that this film was exactly as I expected - no surprises either good or bad. Definitely has some laughs and the chemistry between most of the cast was decent. I was not going to watch this but was in the mood for a comedy and wanted to see what Hawkeye was up too.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/39/e0/30/39e030dfe8ae7318fd813265b06a83f0.jpg

I think he (Renner) did pretty good as the bad ass Tag player and believe he would do well in a serious/comedic role in the future (thinking something like De Niro or Nicholson) but definitely on a lower level.

Anyway, I enjoyed this, but it isn't a whole lot to write home about.

Bruce Willis and sarah Jessica Parker star in this whodunnit cop thriller. Very average but also charming in a early 90s way. Absolutely gobsmacked by how good SJP looks! She is hot stuff in this film. Unfortunately age caught up with her (like it does us all) in sex and the city.

My wife oddly chose this one to watch last night without my input, as it's not really my type. I like scary movies, but not really historic era settings (though it's not that historic). It is Stephen King, so it has a lot of trademark elements that most of his movies contain. The acting was serviceable, but I couldn't identify how bad it may have really been given the southern accents. Somewhat interesting, but nothing new or surprising.

This is an odd one to say the least. One of those typical of the era.. late 60s. It has parallels with the superior Beast In the Cellar which was made three years later. Both were made in England and both had the theme of a mad, locked away human/monster doing all sorts of murder and mayhem on unsuspecting people. Padding up the story is the sub plot of a gang of testosterone - driven lowlifes bent on tormenting the young wife of a man who buys an old, remote mill house. This particular theme also has parallels with the later Straw Dogs. This film failed to grab my attention. The characterizations were stilted. Having fine actors such as Oliver Reed and Flora Robson speaking in poor American accents did not enhance my demeanor. It really has no redeeming features other than its original plot..or is it original?rating_2_5

This was pretty awesome for what it is, and that's a rape/revenge film. The only thing is that a big part of it is very unbelievable, and that could take some viewers out of it. But it's not like this is a biographical drama, and it delivers to it's intended audience. It's well made with some really interesting shots and a pulsating soundtrack. The lead actress is hot and it gradually turns into a bloodbath. My wife even loved it. In the beginning she was talking crap like oh those are the type of windows I love with the black frames. A half hour later she was going on about yea that's how you kill someone with a knife through the eye.

I got a bit annoyed with all the hype proclaiming this to be the first gay teen film 'ever'... so what were all those gay teen films I was watching 20 years ago then

BUT there is always room for more and this was cute and fresh and amusing. The parents were good, there was lots of attention to detail in little things that you don't necessarily get in teen movies which was good and I really liked the music. There's always a bit of awkwardness when films portray texting or emailing on screen, but I think it handled it about as well as possible.

Hadn't seen this before (although heard of it obviously), it was pretty interesting in a dreamlike way which, I think, was the intended effect. Some of the acting is downright awful (Reeves, Frost, Ryder). Nice to see Tom Waits in an interesting role. 6/10.

I don't remember Sadie Frost being that bad – at least she's English ;). Reeves and Ryder were incredibly offputting, but it's not exactly their fault.

I actually saw a tiny bit of it last night and it was where Dr. Seward is trying to understand Renfield's behaviour. I didn't know Tom Waits at all when I saw the film originally and only in recent years because of Heath Ledger using him as the basis for the Joker's voice. Until you said it I had no idea it was him but he was very good, and ironically, like Ledger, I would never have recognised him without the prompt :).

I was aware of Dekalog but didn't connect this film with it at first. It struck me that it's now a long time ago that I saw the Three Colours films – and each of them only once – so I'm really being reintroduced to Kieślowski at this point.

Yeah I managed to see it on Film 4. Maybe Frost wasn't as bad as I imagined, but she is a bad actress lol! Oldman, Richard E Grant and Hopkins far outweigh the cardboardness of those quoted though. It was an enjoyable film.

Yeah, sometimes it's a bit too much :). His Legends of the Fall character works well for him because he's afforded a perfect reason to go over-the-top. I think he's quite fond of that one.

Talking about this today just made me remember the 1977 Count Dracula with Louis Jourdan. Frank Finlay's Van Helsing and Jack Shepherd's Renfield are my favourite versions of those characters. Finlay's great because he's really low-key and that makes what's going on very scary.

Donnie Darko (2001) - 99/100

Holy ****, this movie's amazing.

First thing I gotta say is it's not as abstract as people make it out to be. It's not hard to follow at all. What it is is hypnotic, twisted, relatable (at least to me), gorgeous, and imaginative. Two things that stand out the most are the supposed dream sequences, which I couldn't take my eyes off of, and Donnie's nihilism, which leads to a particularly cathartic scene with a motivational speaker.

I don't want to spoil it further. And for what it's worth, I swear I'm not just praising it because it's considered a cult classic. It's just a great movie on its own.

Favourite line: You're right, actually. I am pretty... I'm pretty troubled and I'm pretty confused, but I... And I'm afraid. Really, really afraid. Really afraid. But I-I think you're the ****ing Antichrist.

Edit: Forgot to add, the soundtrack is the best I've heard in years.

I can not hold off any longer in presenting my all time favorite Bette Davis flick. It was this magic piece of B celluloid that revived the career of the grand dame of Hollywood. Bette is mesmerizing in the role of the ageing Baby Jane Hudson a former child star in a bitter relationship with her sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) over an accident that left her in a wheelchair decades before. The longer the Robert Aldrich helmed film goes the crazier and tormenting Baby Jane becomes to Blanche..even to feeding her a dead rat for lunch. The acting from this pair of Hollywood royalty is superb and is complemented by the stirring, eerie soundtrack plus Los Angeles locations including the dying final scene on Malibu Beach . Some may not regard this as superior of the pyschological thriller genre but I and many do.rating_4_5

Another dystopian film to enjoy, and it's hard to categorize. It takes an odd tone that will make you laugh sometimes, hold your breath sometimes, but I liked the whole thing. The twist on society is segregating single people from couples in a unique way, and the people themselves just act very strangely. Acting was pretty good, and I would recommend everyone watch this at least once.

cricket You expressed an interest in knowing my thoughts on this one, so here it is.

This was a hard watch, because I have a tough time watching Jake Gyllenhaal suffer. I tend to feel that guy, if you know what I mean, so if he cries, I cry. And I had to be in a state where it's ok to get put through the ringer, and I was. Put through the ringer.

Putting the fate aspect for a second, where it got super real for me was when they took the gauze off for the first time. When I was 16, my dad had an accident in which an 18 wheeler didn't see him on his bicycle, forgot to indicate, and dragged him for a while underneath his vehicle. My mother was in too much shock to drive, so with a learner's license, I drove us to the hospital, where I got there just in time to see bits of my dad's leg fall from his body to the floor. It's the only time I ever heard my dad scream. So, when Jake Gyllenhaal screamed in that moment, I was transported in time almost, and could even smell the hospital. It was at a time when my dad and I had a bit of a tough relationship, and I'd been quietly wishing him ill, so when it actually happened, I felt guilty, and then...seeing that and hearing him scream. Jesus. And then that scene...

There were a few tough as **** scenes to watch. When he's pushing his girlfriend away, yet he needs her so badly...the "SOMEONE HIT ME!" part...that was really tough...and when he's dragging his own ass across the street. And then, when he remembers...****ing. Done.

Yeah, I loved this movie. But it was a tough watch. Tatiana Maslany delivered too. I like her in Orphan Black, so...I wasn't disappointed. She can hold her own against Jake Gyllenhaal.

The entire English dub is on YouTube, so I decided to go ahead and watch it. I guess it's no surprise I enjoyed it so much. After all, I've always had a soft spot for movies about time travel (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Back to the Future, The Final Countdown, The Philadelphia Experiment, etc.) and I'd actually had this one on my watchlist for quite some time. It was a blast, 100 minutes of time-hopping fun and sheer adventure. One of my favorite scenes was where Makoto's sister eats all of the food in the house and Makoto's pissed because she ate her pudding. Hey, when your sister eats your chips, like, all the time, it's hard not to find that relatable. Not only that, later on, she says Makoto ate the entire first batch of rice when she herself did. That is just like my sister, there, man. She'll eat all of the spaghetti and say either I or Dad did. And who hasn't wanted to go back in time and keep that embarrassing thing from happening? Granted, it's to the movie's credit that it doesn't shy away from the fact that there would invariably be consequences if someone did such a thing. As for the dub, it was a really good dub. The voice actors really brought the characters to life. In particular, Emily Hirst is excellent as Makoto, which is good considering she's the one we follow throughout the movie. Thankfully, all of the supporting characters are well-performed, as well. It only helps that the dub script is completely natural. That guy who said, "Ew, dub," when I asked if I should watch it is seriously missing out. So, yeah, I really liked it and I'd watch it again. Hell, I'd buy the Blu-ray if given the chance.

I agree with you. The acting was first rate but the story was boring and anti-climactic. The Death of a Salesman reference is only because the play was being rehearsed as part of the story. It seems to me it got the blessing of the critics simply because it's an Iranian film...

I have always enjoyed the craft of Welsh actor Hywel Bennett..from his saucy Percy films to the larrikan Shelley television character. In between he has made some fine films. One was the psychological thriller Twisted Nerve which was the first of two films he was to make with co-star Hayley Mills, the other being Endless Night (1972). Bennett plays Martin a pyscopathic killer who adopts a childlike persona called 'Georgie' to ingratiate himself with people that befriend him..specially the pretty yet unsuspecting Susan (Mills).rating_3_5

I'm fascinated by the reports that Lee's original cut was going to be about 140 minutes (or maybe even 180 minutes, though that may have just been an assembly cut) but then it got slashed down to about 100 (which is still about 15-20 minutes shorter than the original). In any case, I was already questioning how much I liked the original even before watching this version and this certainly doesn't help matters.

I would’a gone with this quote:

“You’ll never make it. Not in a million years.”
“But after that?”

Quite disappointed with Seconds, was looking forwards to this and it started off well and creepy but when Rock Hudson came along I was bored for the most part and knew what the ending was so it wasn't a 'shocking' surprise.

Just saw Rampage (2018). I would give it a 6 out of 10. It was exactly what I expected. Predictable without a whole lot of depth and not the greatest acting. The Rock is actually getting a little better in his acting. I saw Jumangi a few months ago and he surprised me a bit in that too. I wish they would have shown the monsters actually do more deliberate damage to multiple buildings since that is what the whole point of the video game was about. The Willis Tower falls, but they didn't even show the monsters do anything to it to make it structurally weak to fall over the way it did. Further, they should have shown more than just that one collapse. I think if you go into a movie knowing that it's not out to get an Oscar, but just be mindless entertainment, then it won't be a disappointment because your just there to watch a movie where you don't have to think too much and eat some popcorn.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2017) 4/5

Starring Brian Cox. A father and son, both coroners, investigate the death of a young woman's corpse, and things get very bizarre the more they investigate. It's well written and a smart thriller. Definitely something I enjoyed.

I watched Annihilation yesterday. And it was great. Surely in Top 10 of 2018 movies. The concept, screenplay, background score and visuals, everything was perfect.
I'll rate it 8.5 out of 10.

Disappointment a little bit. His previous movies were better in my opinion.
rating_3 [The Salesman]

Edit: I read today that this movie is inspired by Arthurs Miller's Death of a salesman. I didn't notice any connotation. Anybody here did?
I agree with you. The acting was first rate but the story was boring and anti-climactic. The Death of a Salesman reference is only because the play was being rehearsed as part of the story. It seems to me it got the blessing of the critics simply because it's an Iranian film...

I think the critics didn't appreciate his previous movies and now they want to rectify their mistake. Yes, the movie was partly boring.

The Eyes Of Orson Welles (2018)

Disappointing doc/essay film that was far too long. Moment of the night though, the director had Orson Welles daughter introduce the film over speakerphone! We were actually talking to Orsons actual daughter!

By previous movies, do you mean earlier movies by Farhadi? You may have a good point there, although I've never seen any of his prior films. Do you have a recommendation? Thanks.

A Separation, i liked The Past too but it's gotten a more mixed response. Those are the only two i've seen.

Don't think it's accurate to say critics didn't praise his films before The Salesman, A Separation is one of the most acclaimed films this decade and was from its release, rightfully so IMO.

Yeah, I mean his prior movies. About Elly was really thrilling. It was the fisrt Farhadi movie I watched. I've watched also A Separation and
The Past and the last one I recommend the most, although both are really good.

Okay

The Past is my favourite Farhadi too, but I personally don't see any drop in quality from About Elly to The Salesman. I actually think he is getting better and better. Although, with the reception of his latest film, he may have broke his streak. Also, I don't see the connection at all, between the critics blessings, and Farhadi's films being Iranian...but that's probably because there isn't one.

It certainly helps though. Mom and Dad was awful, but can you imagine how worse it would have been without the Cage antics?
