Just saw Cinderella... it used to be one of my favorite animation movies as a child and this version did not disappoint...it was so beautiful. Finally a Disney remake that is as good as the original and kept the magic alive. I think it deserves an Oscar for costumes design. Cate Blanchett is perfect as the stepmother and Lily James does a great Cinderella. :D

I noticed a lot of love for Disney's live action "Cinderella." Perhaps you should check out Jean Cocteau's work of Art from 1946 "La Belle et La Bete". None of these Hollywood films can hold a candle to it.

Even Christophe Gan's 2014 version is amazing and its nice to watch the story in its original language.

uuuuh hell yeah, I love this version of the story.
The Color of Money, Martin Scorsese.
Naaah. A big pointless mess. I mean, the idea wasn't bad, seeing how's good old Fast Eddie doing after all those years, but the execution is pretty flawed.
First of all, the characters don't make sense. Vincent starts as a cocky jerk and ends as a cocky jerk (an honest one, ok, but still a jerk), Eddie starts as meh, continues as meh ad ends as super meh. I hated the ending, seriously. "I'm back!"...really? Such a pity, it could have been a really interesting story.
BUT, who cares about the characters, right? It's a pool movie! For sure there's going to be some great build-up to a final match. Nope. Not even that. Scorsese does some cool stuff in the match scenes (there's a great shot of Paul Newman's face reflected in a ball), but it's not enough.
Also, Tom Cruise. Nope. I never liked him, never will.
Missed chance.

Unconquered 6/10. I find colonial westerns an interesting oddity in cinematic history. Cecil B. DeMille's 1947 effort is pretty flat on it's delivery, a rather weak script and a thin plot stretched over 2hr and 20m run time. Still, with all that said, it's entertaining enough, and the technicolor is gorgeous. For a DvD it really looked great. I paid £11, which is slightly less than Amazon. I don't see it coming down in price anytime soon, new or used, and thus probable it will become rare. So i'm happy to have it in my collection at last.

But it ran just a little too long.

Not very good at all. Awful acting and a fairly weak plot only slightly recompensed by some dry, albeit almost certainly inadvertent, humour and some mild entertainment. Wouldn't recommend overall, though.

A film based off the works of the English Novelist Thomas Hardy. "Jude" and "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" are still my two favorites. "The Woodlander" is close behind.
There is a scene in "Jude" that I would love to post but after telling Gunslinger about it... It might be to gruesome to post on a regular movie forum.

Sounds like District 9 :p
To be fair though I always thought that was overrated, it was interesting and creative at times but I thought it got confused in what it was trying to do (serious/comedy), the 'bad guys' were silly, and the main actor was annoying as hell. I know people heralded Bloomkamp as some sci-fi genius, but I'm not in a rush to watch this new film.

The Three Caballeros (1944)
Haven't seen this one since I was a kid but I liked it. Didn't love it, just liked it. I feel I would have liked it if the cartoon characters hadn't taken the travelogue trip through Mexico. I just felt it didn't mesh well. I know we're talking animated characters here, but I think I really don't like many movies where real-life people and cartoons act together. There are some exceptions, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit but for the most part, nah. So that's probably the reason it gets only three popcorn bags from me. Loved the stand-alone animated parts though, like the flying donkey. :)

Tammy (2014)
I started out liking Melissa McCarthy in her first few films, but I was kind of let down by this one. The funniest parts were in the first half, then it kind of devolved into a "feel-good-wipe-away-those-tears" kind of movie, with some romance thrown in. Not a bad movie but by no means a re-watch.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) and Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)
Enjoyed the heck out of both these movies, but then again they are directly in my wheelhouse. Give me Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and any actors of that genre and in those years from the late 50's to the mid-70's and I'm happy. Price does great in both these films as the vengeful Phibes, killing his victims off in various, ingenious ways. My favorite was the "scorpion death" from the second film but they were all good, gruesome stuff. I loved a certain scene in the sequel where Phibes is hiding in some rocks, but in plain sight. Those who've seen it know what I mean. I'd been wanting to see these for decades and finally, finally got them on DVD.

The Day (2011)
Bought this sight-unseen at a big discount when my local Blockbuster shut down last year and only watched it the other night. I saw the words "post-apocalyptic" on the cover and that's all I needed. I'm glad I picked it up. Excellent movie. Five people (three young men and two young women) are traveling cross-country in what is apparently the aftermath of some war, when they come across a deserted house. But things are not always what they seem. They are soon trapped in the house and forced to fight for their lives against a group of cannibalistic people who lay siege to the house. It's very intense, with some gore, lots of violence and excellent acting from a good cast for this low-budget of a movie. The last scene really had me saying "wow" out loud. You'll know it when you see it. Hard times in a hard world. Stars Shawn Ashmore, Cory Hardrict, Dominic Monaghan, Shannyn Sossamon, and Ashley Bell, who was in The Last Exorcism films (which I have not seen) and is outstanding in this movie. Very much recommended.

Trash? So you mean all the drugs, money and sex? Is that a waste of time or is it a well executed satire on the lives of the upper men of Wall Street and a question on "does money and power equal happiness?".Your choice.

No, just no. I hated this movie. Hated the editing, hated the cliches, hated the cinematography (actually I don't want to even call it that, since its basically a bunch of computer graphic generated shots). Hated the action. Hated everything. What an awful film. Huge waste of time, I expected and predicted an underrated decent superhero movie but I have awful psychic powers I guess.

The Machinist - 4/10 - It's not just that it reminded of "Fight Club" (he even washed his hands with a box of lye) - but if there was ever a person who hadn't slept in a year, anything is possible. I think Bale was ok, and though I might have been curious, I didn't think the movie had much going for it.
El Sur a.k.a. The South (1983)
A fascinating spanish film by Victor Erice. It portraits the relationship between a daughter and her father in the post-civil war Spain.
There is a constant contrast between Shadow and Light and a very interesting relation between the positioning of the windows and the four cardinal points. The dialogues are extremely well written and, even if it's a slow paced movie, the story flows really well! Also the perfomances are remarkable from everyone involved!

The Woman, Lucky McKee.
I don't knooooow, it's cool but not but yes but not.
Incredibly interesting premises: while hunting, a guy finds a wild woman living in the woods. He decides to capture her and civilize her.
BUT we also slowly discover the this guy is seriously sick and all of his family suffers from it.
Pros: everything is pretty f*cked up, and I love f*cked up s*hit. In movies, that is.
Cons: the screenplay doesn't manage to melt the two themes of the movie very well. Actually it does an awful job. It's like they didn't know if they wanted to make a movie about the taming of a savage (ok, about how uncool it is to try and tame a savage), or one about a family enslaved by a sick man. So they decided to do both, and it didn't work out.
In all honesty I could have lived without the whole savage woman thing, and I feel bad saying this since the movie is supposed to be about her. The Woman could have been a great contender to Dogtooth for the "Dysfunctional family of the Year" award.
Don't get me wrong tho, it's still a highly enjoyable movie with some juicy gore and a nice ending, obviously made with passion. The soundtrack is a little too present, maybe, but you get used to it quickly.
I'm also seriously in love with Lauren Ashley Carter now.

lol that's true, but on top of that he hits his wife, he raped his daughter, he thinks all women are whining useless bitches and he held another girl (his first daughter?) captive for years in his dogs' cage.
He's like a pro at being sick.
PS I'm not sure about spoilers policy on this forum so in doubt I tagged parts that in my opinion give away interesting parts of the movie

Faust, F.W. Murnau.
Whenever I watch classic movies these old I feel like I don't possess the authority (and the knowledge for sure) to comment them properly. It was another era, and the acting especially takes a while to get used to.
I loved the first part, with old Faust during the plague. So eerie. The rest, I enjoyed watching it mainly out of curiosity. Let's say I could have lived without the part with Mephisto fooling around with the old lady.
Sometimes I wonder what a director like Murnau, so great at putting together a great shot, placing the camera and using lights and shadows, would have been able to do if he lived even just a couple decades later. I'm not implying that he would have done something better, just how he would have interpreted a media which was becoming more and more mature and perfected.
Anyway, tomorrow I'll watch Sokurov's version of Goethe's opera, let's see what that's like.

By 1926 silent cinema is getting pretty close to being perfected, but I'm guessing that's not really your point. I would say that you have to look at silent and sound cinema differently, though and not just in terms of acting.

I know I know, it really is a pointless exercise but I can't help it. What would (would, not could) have Murnau done with sound and color? what would have, idk, Anderson (you guys can choose which Anderson*) done with no sound and no color?
Could you suggest me some good directors who made it alive and productive from one era to the other? Like from silent to sound and\or from (forced) black and white to color?

A Child Is Waiting - 9/10 - I would have given it a 10, but Stanley Kramer had the final cut, and not Cassavetes - the first and last time he worked for a big studio head. I felt more compassion for the Doctor (Lancaster) rather than Judy Garland's character whose heart might be in the right place, but not helping the children. Cassavetes wanted to concentrate on the kids (mentally retarded) and how it was the parents' problem. Kramer just wanted guilt; and he complained how the two big stars weren't getting enough attention. Very emotional film, and deals with so many of life's issues. Wonderful.

Damn you, Sokurov. I've seen three of your movies and all three of them are like this. You are an AMAZING director, like seriously, you have an incredible talent, but argh.
I'd pick Murnau's version a thousand times.

What else have you seen from Bunuel, Lucas? And how would you rank them
What else have you seen from Bunuel, Lucas? And how would you rank them
His short film Un Chien Andalou, Exterminating Angel, The Golden Age and Belle de Jour. Like Minio, Belle de Jour is the one I actually really like.
The first three are sorta interchangeable tbh, they all range from 2.5 to 3.

Yeah, not a fan of Un Chien Andalou either, but that was my first Bunuel. I've pretty much loved everything else I've seen from him since.
you should check out Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Phantom of Liberty, you'd probably dig those. The latter is a near-masterpiece in my book.

Well, I give it 3 I haven't seen much Bunuel, but from what I've seen I only truly love Belle de jour (I guess I have to watch Tristana since Deneuve stars in it). You've probably already seen it, but just in case...
You like Belle de jour because she's a prostitute... dont deny it!
I have only seen l'Age d'or and Belle de Jour by Bunuel. I enjoyed them both. You cant compare them because they are decades apart. I need to see more Bunuel.

http://i.imgur.com/XXpa2y7.jpg
The world in the film is dark, bleak, and hysterical that you may think its impossible to make a story out of the mess. However, a brilliant performance by Daniel Thewlis and a powerful script make a melancholy, disturbing 2 hours which leave you with shivers at the end, but soon with exclamation. Great film and I can see why Swan has it high up on his Top 10 but I don't think it'll become a personal favorite of mine.

Monsters, Gareth Edwards.
I loved his Godzilla, a lot. That's why I was really curious about this movie, which I thought would be like Godzilla on a low budget. Well, it is. The problem with this movie is that basically nothing happens. Like we literally see the monsters (I didn't like their design, they're like Chtulhu's dumber brothers) maybe two times throughout the whole movie. These are the best parts of the movie, Edwards obviously knows how to show a monster on camera and their apparitions are always cleverly shot. Unluckily, like I said, the monsters get maybe 5 minutes of screen time.
"Henry ahah, you silly guy, the movie is about a boy and a girl in a difficult situation!". Well, to that I answer that the guy and the girl are so poorly written that I couldn't care less about them. Ok, at least the girl is hot, but the guy has literally no reason to exist. It's basically Godzilla's same problem, but Godzilla had a million tons of awesomeness in it that this movie does not possess. Also, I just won't believe that Edwards wanted to make a movie about the relationship and personal growth of two guys: he obviously likes monsters more than humans. He just didn't have enough money to do everything he wanted, and I'm glad the big guys sitting in leather armchairs smoking cigars gave him a lot of money to go make Godzilla a couple years later.
2
oh bah I read that it was even more low on budget than I thought. Like Edwards did the visual effects all by himself with his own computer, the crew was made by seven people and only the two main characters were real actors
What the hell, I'll up the rating to 3, anyone with this much passion deserves at least one bonus popcorn bag.
The Fault in our Stars
I only watched the middle half of this movie, but i wouldn't mind watching it all the way through.
The two leads were really cute together. nice casting.

Colossal Youth (2006) by Pedro Costa
http://www.colesmithey.com/.a/6a00d8341c2b7953ef0167671159d3970b-pi
5
Among the best, if not the best, movies of the 21st century. It's amazing the massive leaps that Costa makes between features. Each new film is a reevaluation and reconstruction of his art. With In Vanda's Room, it appeared as though Costa had reached the logical conclusion of his art. If In Vanda's Room was Costa's evaluation of Warhol's film art, Colossal Youth is his evaluation of John Ford's art. More than a modern art film, it feels like the distillation of Ford films like Sergeant Rutledge and 7 Women, where everything on screen becomes simultaneously a myth and a deconstruction of the idea of myth.

Playtime (1967) 3.5
I like movies with a story, distinct characters, and some drama. This movie doesn't have any of that. It's like a non-stop barrage of sight gags and optical illusions. This movie is incredible to look at and very unique. For me to enjoy a movie like this, it has to be pretty brilliant, and I think it probably was.

Glad you enjoyed it. Obviously the point of Playtime is that it's an attempt at a collectivist (rather than individualist, like the vast majority of movies ever made) cinema and I think it succeeds at that.

Enough Said - 6.5/10 - A really nice film about single middle-aged people dealing with trying to find someone romantically as well as platonic, as well as parenting. What I really like about this film is how it shows the uniformity of women, how Julia's character does well when she goes with her intuition, and how she does horrible when she is only following the advice of her peer. It also shows how petty women can be. The Gandolfini character Albert is a good guy, his negatives are only pointed out repeatedly because of his ex, who has her own problems having no friends, and admits she needs someone to bitch to (who has such a poor attitude). It's on HBO all the time, it's probably my fifth time watching, and this time I was able to watch the first 45 seconds which I always seem to miss.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928, Dreyer)

Extremely touching, so ahead of its time. I don't think the images will ever leave my head. My first film of Dreyer, his short filmography is high on my watchlist. This is something special though.
The Virgin Spring (1960, Bergman)
https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3007/3148927937_018cf6a9ea.jpg
Almost like entering a tragic fairytale, witnessing everything. I would almost say it is one of the finest films I have seen from Bergman. It's so simple, but there's something extremely enchanting about it, I can't quite put it into words. You could quite literally say that: I am speechless.

I don't like letting little things bother me too much, but if a professional hitman does a job while wearing very distinctive clothing, doesn't he get rid of that clothing after said job? Especially with several witnesses? Besides that, I thought this was a terrific crime film. I liked it about the same as The Red Circle from the same director.

I genuinely do not even know where to begin with this one, but I'll start by listing the film's strongest point: The Cinematography. This film is a visual marvel and it's quite honestly the most visually gorgeous film of the last several years. As cliche as it sounds this film does have a strong Tarvovsky-esque vibe, and I could have sworn some images were genuine homages. However this is a film more akin to a slow Bergman drama than anything else although that might be a very broad comparison. The acting performances are incredible and the characters are extremely well fleshed-out. This is a great film but it suffers one major subjective flaw that keeps me from rating it higher. This film is waaaayyy to long. I'm all for having a slow, contemplative drama but 30-40 minutes could have been shaved off and the films' themes and ideas wouldn't be lost.

This is from the top 100 Sci-Fi list, while IMDb lists it as drama/horror/mystery. I don't know what I'd call it, but I loved it. "The Company" gives people a chance to start over by faking their death and giving them plastic surgery. The 90 minute run time flew right by, and I had an uneasy feeling throughout.

Mr. Deeds Goes To Town - 10/10 - Saw it on TV this morning, nice way to start out the day. It's a film that reflects my values, even in 1936. Such an excellent film about the true meaning of life as opposed to the material conformity, as well as psychological issues - the courtroom scene is a great ending to show how each person has their own fidgets and when it's different from their own, everyone else is crazy, as shown by the two who are not "pixilated" - I also love the man who enters the home to tell Cooper what he lost, and how money has moved him away from his prior humanity.

Amazing writing, with some incredibly strong scenes! The way Luke's character is revealed during the whole movie and his influence on the rest of the prisioners is astonishing! A perfect performance by Paul Newman who I believe was born to play this! This will figure high on the 60s list, I'm sure!
"He was smiling... That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. The Artist, Michel Hazanavicious.
Well ok, it deserves every praise ever. A silent movie in 2011! I don't know if its a movie worth 5 academy awards, including best picture, but it sure is a good movie. So yeah, a silent movie about the transition from silent movies to sound (which is basically what we were talking about in this very discussion a couple days ago, crazy coincidence), seen from the point of view of an old school actor who seems unable to adapt himself to progress. Speaking of actors, the acting in this movie is so good. It's the perfect balance between the over the top acting of silent movies and present day acting. No wonder Dujardin won the oscar.
Some scenes are sincerely brilliant, especially the nightmare in which Dujardin hears sounds. I have just a few things I can complain about. The first 10-15 minutes of the movie are a little slow, they show too many scenes from the movies that are being made inside the movie; the photography was good but a little too plainish grey for my personal taste, I like strong contrasts in my B&W; the ending, which I would have cut when we can hear Peppy and George catching their breaths after dancing.
Oh btw, I wish I could pull off that badass 30's style moustache.

Insurgent - One star and that's being generous. It's intended for adolescents, but when I was 13, I would have been throwing wet jujubes at the screen during this dog.
Sennentuntschi (CH/A, 2010, Michael Steiner) - rating_4
An Alpine legend tells the story of three lonely herdsmen who were so starved of female companionship they built the girl of their dreams from a broom, some straw and a few rags. Then the Devil took pity and made Sennentuntschi live and breathe. Soon she took revenge for what the herdsmen did to her and skinned them. The first 50 minutes of this movie blew me away! Incredibly creepy, mysterious and thrilling, a really dense atmosphere with great images and a great soundtrack. Unfortunately, the movie isn't able to sustain this level throughout, though it has some great moments in the second half, as well. But after all, i really enjoyed the movie.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994) 3
I thought a lot of this movie was silly, but there's enough creepiness to make it work pretty well. I really like Sam Neill, and this is a role he's very good in. I wonder why Charlton Heston was in this movie; he's fine, but it's a small role that doesn't stand out at all. The rest of the cast is mediocre. Recommend for horror fans.

3 girls having a violence and sex filled fun for 80 minutes. The film with the rapid editing and fast pace makes it enjoyable and I wanted to join the fun and have a blast, but the movie simply didn't let me. The fact that it didn't is what I believe to be the limit of the film.

I preferred the actual film "Marty" with Borgnine and Blair (who is pretty, not a dog as claimed in the movie). I thought the film was short, so 50 minutes was too short to show what I think was a great original love story that's closer to reality than most. "Marty" was on TCM last night, I put an announcement, hope you guys saw it!

Yeah... anime is Japanese animation, typically in the more traditional hand drawn style.
Mary and Max. is neither Japanese nor hand drawn. I'd be pissed if it was remade in live action. The crudeness of the clay sculpting gives it an extra bit of charm. Besides that, I couldn't imagine anybody but Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Max.
Also, it is a film.

Too Late Blues - 10/10 - My second time watching this, loved it even more. I think anyone can identify with this movie, especially anyone who loves the arts, especially music. It's about love, love of music and people, integrity, purpose, other important social issues - probably the best Cassavetes dialogue, and one of my favorites of his. Very lean movie, no fat, every word is important, every scene. Also what I love about this is that it shows the perspective of many characters, and how there's no good or bad characters, just the better parts of people. They played this on TCM a few months ago as well..

Shadows - 6/10 - Third time watching.. First time I thought it was ok, second time I loved it, last night I didn't think of it as much. It's probably the first independent film, it's very different for 1959, but it's kinda murky.. There are some great lines, but I guess this was an improvisation. I think every film after this had a script that was closely followed, but Cassavetes wouldn't say where to stand, or how to do this or that, so it would appear more natural.

The Innocents, Jack Clayton.
Well I'm really impressed. A great mix between a classic haunted mansion movie and a more psychological thriller à la Polanski. There's everything, from a huge villa to creepy toys to dead people who maybe are not so dead to apparently cute children. Some scenes have an impressive way to build tension, and even tho Clayton perhaps doesn't use the house itself as well as he could have (except for the huge garden and its sounds), he surely does a great job at moving his characters around it. The only thing which I found a little annoying was Kerr's performance, with her constant melodramatic voice tone.
Being a big fan of studio logos and how they are presented in movies, I loved this one. The movie starts on a black screen with the creepy theme song playing, and then the 20th Century Fox logo silently appears on screen without its usual music. Great way to set the atmosphere from the very beginning.
4
EDIT: from imdb
The film opens with a creepy song written by Paul Dehn and Georges Auric sung over a black screen for about 45 seconds before the 20th Century Fox logo appears. In some cinemas, the projectionists assumed this was a mistake on the print and edited the film so it began with the appearance of the Fox logo.

A traditional movie for me in terms of it having three acts. The first one is riddled with pretentious, unbelievable dialogue. The second is at least interesting although somewhat over engineered. The third uses one of the cheapest and laziest plot devices in cinema and also feels a need to treat the audience as if they are morons. Officially I think it was a tie between Mr. Cruise and myself as to who could pull the most incredulous face during this film with the mask a close third.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Just now getting to see this. Extremely good movie. As many know, it's about the ten year hunt for Osama Bin Laden, with Jessica Chastain's character being the main driver behind tracking him down. Of course, many people took part in this manhunt and helped the character of Maya (an amalgam of several people, I'm led to believe). Whatever the reality, the movie itself was excellent, with many familiar faces populating the proceedings. We had a full cast of fine actors including Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Ehle, Harold Perrineau. Jason Clarke, Mark Strong (whom I didn't even recognize...maybe because he wore a toupe? :)), Mark Duplass, James Gandolfini, Joel Edgerton, and John Barrowman.
But no doubt, it's Chastain's movie and she's great as usual. Katheryn Bigelow does a fine directing job. This could work as a companion piece to Bigelow's The Hurt Locker.

This is one of those surreal fairy tale movies. I couldnt help but thinking of "La Bete" from "La Belle et La Bete" when I heard the King talking. Both characters are played by Jean Marais. Catherine Deneuve looked just like Josette Day as the Princess. I would catergorize this film with Malle's "Black Moon", Jires' "Valerie and Her Week of Wonder" and Cegavske's "Blood Tea and Red String."
Stand by me (1986)
I love movies that make me feel nostalgic about my childhood! This one is amazing!
A tale about friendship and about the time when everything is so much simpler! Strong perfomances by the 4 kids and a lot of plot depth hidden in each of them!

Funny Games (A, 1997, Michael Haneke) - rating_3_5
A few years back i watched the 2007 remake, which was also directed by Haneke and which i liked quite a lot. I really "enjoyed" the terror through this passive-aggressive friendliness. So now the original. I think knowing where the movie is headed takes a little bit away from it. This time, i didn't feel as much connected to the victims as i did the first time. Nonetheless, it's a good movie with mostly good acting.

3 docs (in the last week or so) "The Bad Boys", "I Hate Christian Laettner", and "The Fab 5" - I think these "30 For 30" are the best documentaries on sports. Basketball was my life. I played from early, early morning until dark with only a few breaks. I'd even bring a radio, and work on every part of my game. Isiah Thomas was my first hero (after my short stint with Van Gogh), and when I was 6, I saw my Pistons get robbed, saw the greatest performance in basketball, Isiah Thomas scoring 25 in a pivotal Game 6 when he badly damaged his ankle, got robbed by the phantom foul (it was nice James Worthy acknowledged it wasn't a foul)...
Even though I didn't watch college basketball, The Fab Five was really big in Flint...
The "I Hate Christian Laettner" was also really interesting.

The Adventure Of The Golden Condor with Cornel Wilde & Constance Smith (1953)
http://www.horror.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=251&pictureid=2156
It's the story of a French noblemen who loses his title by an evil uncle.
He then ties up with a man who seeks a lost treasure in Guatemala. The nobleman goes to seek the treasure and the two actually find it. However, he falls in love with the partner's wife.
He then takes his treasure back to France to overthrow his evil uncle and pay off many debts as well as use much of the money for good causes.
He returns back to Guatemala and marries the partner's daughter and still has half of the treasure and they live happily ever after.
This is a good adventure yarn and told quite well.
The treasure hunt takes place in the forests and jungles of Guatemala and the photography is really beautiful.
All of the rituals dances and costumes are authentic.
Being photographed in color adds much to the film.
I would rate it 8 out of 10.
It's available on DVD and is worth the watch.

Sexy Beast (2000)
Loved the tone and pacing of the movie. Ray Winstone did a very good job as really likeable ex-con with a happy life, that of-course psychopath Ben Kingsley had to ruin :) Also, Ian McShane did great job as intimidating crime boss. Story is easy to follow and it would be a simple crime film, possibly even a black comedy crime film, if not for Kingsley's performance. Frightening, weird and awkward, he was just all over the screen. One of the most hated characters in movie history, personally to me. Maybe that's why he got Oscar nod for it, I don't know, but I couldn't even define his performance as great or terrible or good or bad, it was just... disturbing.
Anyway, a movie well worth watching.

I feel like writing a review about this movie. I'll do it next week, when I have more free time.
Now, I'll just write a few things:
Last year I was in Holland for a Summer Singing Course. I had the opportunity to visit Amsterdam for a whole day. I knew I wasn't going to have the time to see everything I wanted (Van Gogh's Museum alone would take the whole day) but I knew I wouldn't leave Holland without going to Anne Frank's House. I woke up early and I stood up under a cold rain for 2 hours before I got in. It was worth it. Visiting that house was one of the most terrifying and unforgettable experiences I ever had. I left practically bursting in tears and I had to walk for hours to ease my mind. I still have a poster with Anne's face on the wall of my room so I won't forget it.
This movie made all those memories come back. Made me have to pause a lot of times to take a deep breath, made me wanna scream of frustation...
It's perfectly acted and shot, probably better in those chapters than 99% of the movies of that period, but the premise and the dialogues are beyond perfection. This is what cinema is all about, in my opinion - create situations and atmospheres that resonate inside oneself like as if they were real. I am not german nor jew. I wasn't born when WW II took place and my country didn't take part in it. But I felt like I was ageless and countryless. I felt like all the mankind should feel about what happened in Europe during that time.

Thank you Stanley Kramer.

Nolan may be overrated but this is my favorite movie of his now, perhaps my fav. Hollywood movie of the past couple of years. Even though it's obviously a copy of several previous science fiction movies (2001 comes do mind a lot of times, this movie could be called 2101 perhaps).
I think I like it more because it's a Nolan made for the sci fi fan, like me, instead of a Nolan made for comic book fans or fans of pseudo intellectual stuff (Inception, Memento).
Also, despite being more scientifically accurate than the average sci fi movie it still isn't the most accurate ever:

The Uninvited, Lewis Allen.
Another old school horror for me, and another really good one. I feel like a mix between this and The Innocents would make the definitive horror movie. The Uninvited has a good plot and a great use of the house itself, with all the shadows an dark corners and that eerie staircase. We even catch a couple glimpses at the ghost itself thanks to some badass 1944 special effects!
What I didn't like was that in some points the tone of the movie was a little too light and comedysh (I like my horror movies to be dead serious from start to finish, I ain't got no time to mess around with having fun), and the last sixty seconds or so were quite awful.
Still a great movie, tho.

Marty - 8/10 - Second time seeing this, though I saw the teleplay starring Rod Steiger a few days ago. I loved this movie from the start. You feel for the two main characters, a lot of emotion. I felt their loneliness, and think Chayesky is one of the best writers, he gives plenty of depth instead of surface descriptions. The film doesn't have twists or other manipulations, the writing and the feel stands on it's own. Has some funny lines, "Thomas, you can fight with your wife anytime" or when Marty's mother wants to find a reason to dislike the new girl (Betsy Blair) she either uses what her older and bitter sister has said, or keeps repeating the mantra of "She doesn't look Italian to me"
From the beginning, Marty is hounded by customers how he should be ashamed that he's not married, when even his younger siblings are. Marty's father dies, and didn't have the opportunity to go to school and has to work to support his family, his mother and his unmarried siblings specifically. He's a nice guy looking for love, and find himself in a situation. Some insensitive guys offers him a proposition, and Marty being a pretty moral guy, declines, but finds himself in the same spot, and the encounter is better for the natural way of occurrence. His mother is told by her sister how as widows, when the kids leave, the mother has no purpose. It's 1954, and the new woman in Marty's life is liberated and goes with her feelings, and doesn't mind sharing her opinions on the relationship between kids and their parents. By coincidence, something the older sister says becomes mentioned by the younger sister, and by that coincidence, she feels the sister is right, and becomes selfish and mean in the process, and flip-flops; and isn't doing what's best for her son, but instead what's best for her. Marty's friends are very discouraging, but you'll have to watch the rest...
I just wished the film was longer....

The House of The Devil, Ti West
Last movie of my mini horror marathon, and yet another excellent movie. West obviously knows the genre very well and he shows it. The first thing that I loved is that the movie is not only set in the 80s but also shot like if it was from those years, with a great photography and credits.
Second thing I loved: the pacing. There are three distinct parts in the movie, the first one is used to set the mood and introduce the main character, a lovely girl in dire need of money. It's quite slow, to be honest, but it's perfectly balanced buy how brutally fast fecal matter hits the fan in the second and third part.
Third thing I loved: the main character isn't as stupid as other horror movies characters. She knows she needs a weapon, she turns all the lights on, she mainly makes right decisions.
Fourth thing I loved: the scene where Samantha blasts music in her earphones and dances. Usually horror movies rely on darkness to blind us and the characters to generate fear, but in this particular scene West makes an extremely clever use of music, shutting off every sound but the song playing in the Walkman, leaving us not blind but deaf to anything that's happening in the house.
A thing I didn't love was that making Samantha smart and strong meant making the bad guys pretty pathetic, but I'd honestly rather have this than the usual pitiful defenseless girl who wouldn't be able to escape even if it was on the screenplay.

Death Race
Directed By: Paul W.S Anderson
3.5
http://img.pixady.com/2015/03/806445_image.jpg
I've never seen Death Race 2000 so this movie was all new to me. I've seen this movie on the tv numerous times lately but I've never given it ago until last night. I dunno, I always got the impression it was a cheap looking movie like one of those straight to dvd movies you see on sale in your local dvd store. The movie stars Jason Statham who I actually quite like. I've enjoyed some of his movies in the past like Snatch, The Transporter, even Crank was entertaining ( but still pretty sh**). He's also one of The Expendables and one of today's big action movie stars...but with a hairy chest and a bald head of course. Damn how our action movie stars have changed over the years. Anyways, he's a pretty good actor so I finally decided to give Death Race a shot. My verdict... It was actually pretty entertaining. ..........

Spartacus (1960)
http://i.imgur.com/iJzw6xU.jpg
Stanley Kubrick did not have full control over Spartacus, and it shows. The action was great and entertaining to watch but the rest of the film was a overlong historical epic containing all the usual drama and romance with no flamboyant style or unique take on the historical events. It really didn't feel like something made from Kubrick. The fact that I usually dislike these type of films didn't help either.

Lo imposible (E, 2012, Juan Antonio Bayona) - rating_4
An intense and emotional movie about the tsunami that hit south-east-asia in Dezember 2004. It has a lot of things going for it: The first half is really intense, the cast is great - especially the child actors are amazing - and it is, as mentioned, really emotional. But there are some flaws, as well: When they constantly miss each other in the hospital or the choice to pick a family, where all family members survive and therefore can have a happy ending, which, i guess, most of the victims didn't have.

Teshigahara captured those buildings in their full effects and the background score was amazing (it didn't only enhance, rather added a layer to it)...but my only problem is that sometimes it may be necessary to talk a little...I don't mean a God like voice over, but a discussion may be to put things into perspective, an insight somewhat...can be by the specialists...even the occupants of those houses...kind of a more holistic approach...Having said that, the documentary is mesmerizing...

Nice combination of entertainment and originality. It's a movie that stands out, and I can understand it's best picture win. I would consider it a comedy more than anything else. The movie has a lot of interesting themes and all the blood did was interfere it. The peaceful and moving atmosphere of SSFW&S wasn't there. The characters were unrelateable and weak too in my opinion.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? - 10/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fe/They_horses.jpg
This movie encapsulates everything in life. What a great story, maybe the best script ever. It takes place in 1928 (released in 1969), but it doesn't lose any relevance, which isn't a good sign. The film's main theme is exploitation, and how far we've gone from humanity. I almost was going to write a LONG review, but I started watching it, and just wanted to enjoy it. I might watch it again in a few days with the subtitles on, just in case I missed a word - it does have a lot of funny, smart, satiric lines. And I think each person will take it their own way - a defeatist would say this is a negative movie, a person who might a little more idealist could watch this and think "No, I'm not going to be a cog in the wheel and try to enjoy life as much as possible."
It's a very easy movie to read, but you really have to pay attention. Every single shot, word, etc., is very important. Full of symbolism and metaphors.
If I had one last message, this is would be the film I'd recommend.

Saw two films on the same subject almost back to back...Imamura's Black Rain was definitely a more matured work but this is very good too...

Very impressed with Imamura. This was the 4th one I saw and all of them have been marvelous...

Love and Death - 5/10 - Not bad, I watched this a week ago and kept forgetting to post this - I guess that shows how little effect it had on me... How much psychology can Woody use and reuse? There are a few funny moments..

The Public Enemy - 5/10 - It's alright of a movie. If it's on TV, it's worth watching, though it's pretty short at 84 minutes. I guess I would have rather watched something else.

Sweet Smell of Success (1957) 4.5
Good story with some pretty decent tension for a movie that doesn't revolve around violence. Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis are terrific as two slimeballs. Some great dialogue and camera work as well. I thought this was an extremely well done movie.

The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) 3.5
This British film actually reminded me of a more serious version of Stir Crazy or the original The Longest Yard. Great performance from Tom Courtenay. It didn't blow me away but it's a real solid movie.

Men in Black (USA, 1997, Barry Sonnenfeld) - rating_3_5
It's been a few years since i saw this movie the last time. I think it's still a pretty fun movie.
I love it, great duo of Smith and Jones.

Nice...Would have been better if ended earlier (some inserts stayed for far far too long and that length conveyed nothing).

Was expecting a more aggressive/less traditional film. This is a very conventional, but well executed, Hollywood drama film.

Bicycle Thieves (1948)

Wow, just wow. How I am managing to describe my experience is utterly beyond me. Everything with this film was perfect for me. Every shot, every frame in threaded with so much emotion and beautiful realism. The music was brilliant and never failed to capture the mood every single time. In a short 90 minutes I felt so much, for a simple and warm film about a father and son trying to find a bicycle.
I think I'm already becoming a fan of director De Sica. I'm going to check out Umberto D sometime next week.
I regret seeing it now. I have no idea why I skipped Bicycle Thieves. Everyone who hasn't seen this yet check it out.

Agreed Gatsby. I consider Bicycle Thieves to be top 20 or quite possibly top 10 of all time.
