...It was shockingly non-violent for a nearly 3 hour film, and so much of it was very un-Tarantino (at least un-Tarantino post-Jackie Brown) - which was totally fine with me. It absolutely luxuriated in it's mythic 1969 story and world-building and I was all in for it. Brad Pitt stole the film, this is the absolute best he’s been since Fight Club. The tension building was super effective, and I appreciated how it wasn't completely dark or serious, it felt wholesome by the end, even a bit melancholy and sad (makes you ponder on what could’ve been). It kinda felt like a more darker and serious, grounded iteration of La La Land without any musical numbers (spoilers I guess if you expected any musical numbers?)
But by taking the Sharon Tate murder, which we dreaded coming, and flipping it on its head and making it Hollywood mythology, I think kept it from being too exploitative. Which it could have easily been had he decided to portray what actually happened. The midnight screening audience I attended absolutely lost it when Cliff was bashing one of the Manson killer's heads over and over.
rating_4_5I had zero plans of watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I'm not a fan of Tarantino's movies and suspected this one would be a ****fest of stupidity...But it sounds pretty good based on your review, so you've convinced me! I'll watch it.

Didn't you enjoy Cassell's performance? Didn't you enjoy that amazing dolly shot? Didn't you enjoy the whole disaffected youth portrayal ? It perfectly sums up the broken fringes of the Paris suburbs.
4 out of 10 is veryharsh. I'd give it 8 at least.
To answer the first three questions. No.
My rating was meant to be harsh. I thought it was awful.

You liked the film more than I did, Joao. To my taste the picture was even more boring and pointless than was Jarmusch's Paterson.
It was not void of pluses. The female characters were first rate, and provided some enjoyable vignettes. But Murray slept-walked through his part, with so many instances of sitting in silence that I couldn't believe he stayed awake. The few examples of his "dead pan" humor were swamped by the puzzling masking of much of his life. His character as presented could never have been a ladies' man. Years ago he was a "Don Juan". Now he is dumped by the current girlfriend. He may have a son. That's it. The minor interest in learning who his son might be is left to drift off with no denouement. The film could have ended in any number of reasonable ways. Jarmusch managed to avoid all of those..:)
The music was enjoyable, almost all of it from a album by "Ethio-jazz" ethno-music composer, Mulatu Astatke. In fact the album provided practically the entire music score. They saved some money there!
The drivers of the attraction to this film were Murray's reputation as a comedian, and Jarmusch's as a director. But neither must have worked too hard in this movie.
It always amazes me when a film or character attempts to be "hip" or interesting by simply being silent or unemotional. That approach may work 1 in 10 times. IMO this wasn't one of them.
~Doc
to be honest i didn't liked that much, i'd probably rate it 3/5 now
i agree that murray didn't seem to be a ladies man, like his presented, but i'm not a specialist
i can understand why jim wanted murray to be silent much of the movie,
he wanted the audience to pay attention to the visual details instead of the unimportant narrative
by the end of the movie, you could say everyone that is shown there could have written the letter
i understand why jim ended the movie that way, i'd end it the same way, like i said, the uncertainty
i don't think jim tried to be "hip", he became famous from battling classic hollywood conceptions
if you pay attention he made entire movies about scenes the main stream movies neglect
he makes special efforts to end movies this way, because the plot is not much of a importance to him

made the absurd and futile a comedy, jim made a entire movie out of the royal with cheese, even worse
he wasn't afraid of the mia wallace uncomfortable silent moments, damn! i woke with pulp fiction in me,
anyway, they are real, and jim wanted to make real conversations, even if they don't make much sense,
which end up having sense, because they might lack sense for a movie dialogue but they're the reality
some comedy i could laugh out, like the jim and tom scene, hilarious, others were a subtle comedy,
like when you laugh at the absurdities you do or once did, because they are true and genuine, but stupid

uncertainty is the word to sum up this movie
jarmusch showing his music repertoire with a nice ethiopian music
the typical jarmusch, unconcern about the plot, all about the details
jarmusch along side with his "teacher" wim wenders are masters on filming cars
i'd like to know how he filmed those first person car scenes
I watched this film when I first joined "Lovefilm"... thought it had its charm (provided by Murray) and a good tale, I'd rate exactly the same as you Joaoa.

Minorly enjoyable and thin wistful movie. TBH I didn't think this deserved a remake, it wasn't a strong Disney flik in the first place. The actors all do well but the fleshing out of something that has very little flesh to begin with makes it grey. I didn't realise Tim Burton directed this, there's no originality which is surprising.

Big Trouble (2002)
A delightful and zany romp set in Miami, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld from a book by Dave Barry, this screwball crime thriller stars Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Farina, along with a half dozen good wacky character portrayals.
Everyone gets into various forms of trouble, but yet finds love in the end. Although 17 years old, it delivers plenty of belly laughs, and clever dialogue. It's PG-13, and the film breezes along and winds up before you know it. Want a mood lifter? Watch this film.

I Am Nicola (TV 2019) – 7.5/10
I think the most affecting part about this was that the scenes of happiness between the couple, at least to me, appeared to be imagined fantasy. Visually they are equivalent to the state Nicola seems to enter once she forces herself to escape the relationship, in the real world.
I didn't think this was perfect – I'd have liked the music to be different; I thought that the dialogue might have been improvised and it seems this was the case. My concern was how much that was detectable and if it could occasionally become repetitive or, unusually, make the characters unnatural; I felt the relationships weren't as convincing as they could have been.
Vicky McClure was good to watch. Lots of subtle little switches of emotion. One of the best scenes was Nicola's cry for help to her friend, disguised as a pretence of romantic bliss, smashing into a wall of apathy. I thought Leanne Best was great in that part, in that for all the smiles there's an icy indifference there that makes Nicola's cold stare justifiable once the two have parted. As a Line of Duty fan it was interesting to see these two together again, and I'd liked Best a lot when I first saw her in that show.
I watched this because of Vicky McClure and it was good to see her in a different light (it did amuse me that Adam's office came over so much like Line of Duty's AC-12 headquarters). Her performance definitely got through to me in a profound way — I rarely dream any more and I had a fairly vivid one that night in which she had a role, possibly standing in for someone in my own life (you know how it works :)).

This instant classic is just as riveting as it was 44 years after its release...I'm trying to think of something wrong with the film, but I'm drawing a blank. One of the most deserving Best Picture winners ever, though in a perfect world, Nicholson would have tied for Best Actor with Pacino for Dog day Afternoon. Perfectly cast right down to McMurphy's fellow inmates...how great was Christopher Lloyd was Tabor? A performance that doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. And the climactic confrontation between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched (Oscar winner Louise Fletcher) still makes me stand up and cheer.

Well, I did. It was a wonderful true documentary, especially as a bookend to O. Stone's Snowden.
If you like the subject matter (I do), you would like another doc that Laura Poitras --director of Citizenfour, who was played by Melissa Leo in Snowden-- also directed called The Program. It's the story of real life higher-up in the NSA, William "Bill" Binney, who designed the program that the NSA (and doubtless others) use to spy on American citizens. When Binney realized what the agency was using it for, he resigned, and started to undermine the NSA and other Fed agencies who treat the public as suspects and enemies.

Not since The Wolf of Wallstreet has a three hour film just flown by. And this is high praise because this is a German film that takes you on this long winding road of a story that doesn't really ever fall into the melodrama of the subject matter. This is sort of an inverse of The White Ribbon which tells the dour story of prewar Germany while this moves post war.
Never look away doesn't go where you think it'll go. You keep waiting for these melodramatic scenes and they don't really come.

Quentin Tarantino
I think it's been more than 3 years since I last posted here. Well, I guess I'm back!
I have to say, I had pretty high expectations for this movie given my love for Tarantino's movies in general, but also because of the praise the film has received so far. Although a bit lengthy (especially the first 2 hours of the movie), the ending is completely amazing. A great take on a tragic true story that only Tarantino himself is able to craft. I would have given this a higher rating hadn't it been for the slow pace of much of the movie.

A Score to Settle 4.0
Nicolas Cage stars as Frank Carver, a man released from prison after being the scapegoat in a gang murder. Released, he only wants two things: a relationship with his estranged son and as the title indicates, revenge. He doesn't pull off the insanity mode until the final ten minutes of the film and it doesn't last long either. There are some intricate twists that writers John Newman and Shawn Ku (who also directed) put in that some are expected but one that is totally unexpected and just makes this a worthy Cage vehicle.

Lamp Light 3.0
Solid indie film about a man having a bad day who finds himself entrapped in a landslide after the tunnel he travels through collapses. Writer/director/star Mason Rey must have been influenced by films such as The Vanishing and Buried, where the protagonist is confined to a small area. In the case of Rey, it becomes a slow spiral downward with him having to confront his own demons and ensure his own survival. Rey does a pretty good job in terms of what he is working with.

Match Point (Woody Allen, 2005)
2.5
Flat movie with uninspired writing, insipid acting by Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys Meyers and clunky editing to boot. At 2 hours, not much happens until the very end and I suppose it's the surprise ending that people like. But to me I like character depth, world building and story arch....and Match Point had little of that. This felt like a lower tier Woody Allen film, ala 'directing by the numbers'.

Rubber (2010, Quentin Dupieux)

This movie is literally about a tyre that comes to life and starts roaming around randomly blowing up people, animals and other objests through psychokinetic powers. And you know what, I liked it. It was fun, absurd, out of the box, and very Lynch-esque in how it deconstructs the whole idea of cinema and the 'cinema-spectator' relationship by inserting an actual audience (a bunch of people with binoculars watching the tyre's killing spree from a distance as it unfolds) as an independent detached protagonist into the film's "movie within a movie" narrative.
Very postmodernist, very meta, full of black humor and all kinds of weirdness but also some subtle social commentary - it's one of those cinematic oddities you will either like or you won't. I enjoyed it.

It's disturbing to see Mishima doing Seppuku, since we know he actually killed himself that same way 4 years later. Also, in 1969 he does seppuku in Hideo Gosha's Hitokiri, another very terrifying experience.

This is the instant "so bad it's good" cult classic of 2019! After going to China on a spiritual quest, a priest finds himself the keeper of a power that turns him into a dinosaur and killing criminals. The last act was heavily influenced by the 1986 B-movie cult classic Miami Connection, except replace martial arts rock band with well, our titular hero with some twists.

When a disgruntled chemist unleashes a deadly toxin in the city, a 70th birthday party is in serious jeopardy. The birthday woman's deadbeat son teams up with the restaurant vice manager as the others successfully escape via chopper to find a way to escape the toxin while the government tracks down the chemist and find a way to neutralize the gas. Great performance by Cho Jung-Suk, who plays the unlikeliest of heroes, whose passion happens to be a skill he'll need to survive: rock climbing.

Communion (1989) – 5/10
I was pleased to see this again as it must be over twenty years since I last saw it. The first thing that strikes me is that I reacted against Eric Clapton's theme (co-written with Allan Zavod, the film's other composer), which to me sounded wrong for the film. This is one of those situations where you have a star band or solo artist sharing parts of a film score – Queen and Michael Kamen on Highlander for example. The majority of the film is more subdued and I found that a lot better.
There's plenty of humour in the film, and Christopher Walken was making me laugh straight away (maybe too much dancing though). The anal probe scene was very funny – "Can we talk this over?" and I chuckled, thinking 'it's all anal with Walken isn't it? ;)' I wouldn't say the humour is always successful, and some scenes may lose a lot because of it, but what I liked is that Walken is always nuanced enough that it doesn't become tongue-in-cheek. You're always conscious of Strieber coping with his experience.
Lindsay Crouse was really good in this too, combative and empathetic in equal measure. However I was disappointed with the lines in the art gallery about it all being to do with "God", which seemed like skewed reasoning. As a Babylon 5 fan it was also nice to see Andreas Katsulas, who I didn't remember being part of the film. Like Christopher Walken, he's very good at bringing in that sense of unease, which leads Alex and his wife to leave the cabin, and also in the scene where he finds Whitley and talks about the folklore he genuinely believes in (I also recalled that B5 referenced this story with its own alien kidnappers, the Streibs).
The aliens are a mixed bag. The best shot of them is probably the Grey peering from behind the door, and they certainly lose a lot when they become weary floating bodies in the later scenes. The "Blue Doctors" are a lot better. As a teenager watching this, they, and the central idea, were a lot more disturbing than they are today.

The Ghost Writer (2010)
This is an atmospheric mystery/thriller directed by R. Polanski, screenplay by Robert Harris, and nicely filmed by Pawel Edelman. Ewan McGregor stars, with important roles for Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Hutton, and a nice cameo by the venerable Eli Wallach.
An author is hired to ghost write a former British Prime Minister's memoirs. The mood is set right from the git-go as the writer travels from NYC to the ex PM's home on Martha's Vineyard. The suspense and intrigue builds from there, as various CIA and other clandestine characters enter the story.
It's a Brit/U.S. mystery which inexorably unfolds to a surprise ending. Polanski gradually builds interest and allure with the use of Hitchockian techniques, cloudy inclement weather, and strangely lovely settings.
I'm not a McGregor fan, but he's well suited for this role, and provides believability. The other portrayals are first rate. The picture is an enjoyable, traditional intrigue/mystery which is presented without the use of graphic sex, violence, or excessive language.

Season of the Devil (Ang Panahon ng Halimaw) (2018) by Lav Diaz
My fourth film by slow cinema auteur Lav Diaz. With a running time of "only" 4 hours, Season of the Devil, is one of the shorter movies by Diaz, but still a somewhat frustrating and difficult watch. From my perspective, watching a film by Diaz, is more of a (difficult) experience than entertainment. Many of the scenes are extended, nearly beyond breaking point, which makes it a rather special and frustrating watch even as a experienced cinephile. Season of the Devil works as an a capella musical, which is a very special and unique take on Philippine fascism. Imagine Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) set in a paramilitary war in the Phillippine jungle. Season of the Devil seems from my point of view as a genuine exploration of a national crisis and tendency towards right-wing fascism and as such highly reflective and in search of a national identity.
Recommended if you are into slow cinema.

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019)
We went to a new theater in Biloxi yesterday to see QT's OUTIH. First time I'd seen a film at a theater in several years, and there are quite a few innovations: electric seats that have controls for reclining, head piece, and swivel table for your food/drinks. There was a pizzeria in the lobby, along with a liquor bar!
The picture was not in the main what I imagined it was going to be, given all the hype and speculation about it for the past year. I admired the film, chiefly for it's first rate acting from all, and secondly for the Hyd/L.A. settings of which I am so familiar.
It was certainly somewhat of a nostalgic plum to the end of the 1960s (when Tarantino was only 6 years old). He obviously loves the time period (the way I love the 1940s), its styles, its music, and its films. I hadn't suspected a comedy/fantasy, and it was a relief not to see his typical gore fetish on display. In fact the fictional outcome of the Manson crowd may have been the way Tarantino wished it would have been.
He did about as good a job as could be done with re-creating the settings of that era, because so many of it's iconic buildings have been torn down. But there was enough to give a fairly authentic representation of the time. One thing that's very difficult to recreate is the atmospheric haze/smog that was continuously present in 1969. I've never seen that in any other city. That, along with the characteristic flora, semi-arid conditions, and crazy architecture everywhere made L.A. unique.
The story lines were in the main believable, and the relationship was solid between the two leads. Look for future films with this pairing.

Smart little thriller about a girl who is socially dysfunctional and finds a "mirror" image in which to project her more extrovert impulses. Watchable. Pretty spooky and India Eisley and Jason Isaacs put in strong performances. not really too original but atmospheric.

The #1 date movie of 1993 is actually starting to show its age a little bit, but it's still one of the best rom-coms ever made. Hanks and Ryan are magical together, even if they only share the screen for 3 scenes and the supporting cast is terrific. Ross Malinger redefines adorable as Jonah.

Ultra, how does it stand up against Schraders '85 "Mishima: a life in four chapters"?
Reading more deeply into it (which is a good side effect of films) it appears Yukio Mishima was rather a figure of fun towards the end of his life?
It holds up pretty well, Schraders vision of Mishima is very peculiar, and it shows the creation of this particular short - Patriotism is strong by it's own, it's only 25 (aprox) minutes, and, for my surprise, more bloody than a life in four chapters - give it a try, it's very artistic - and It's a very sad experience.

I've had a good run this week:
'Dolls' (2002)
One of Kitano's best. Three interweaving 'folk' stories about love and loss. Incredibly original, beautiful to look at.
4
'Oasis' (2000)
Such a moving film. So-Ri Moon is unbelievable in this. Her performance ranks among the best I've seen for a long time. It is a very difficult watch but an essential one for anyone who likes Asian cinema, or just great films.
4
'Gwen' (2019)
A Film from my country so felt obliged to watch it. Glad I did. Some good performances and Maxine Peake settled into her accent as the film went on and Eleanor Worthington-Cox is fine as the titular lead. The film is quite ethereal and dream like. Quite ambiguous. What I noticed though was how good it sounded. The wind and rustling of trees are captured so well....matches the eerie landscape well. Doesn't quite pack a punch that I wanted it to, but a solid watch all the same.
3
'Mouchette' (1967)
I have a Shameful amount of Bresson knowledge. I did enjoy this though, as bleak as it was. Mouchette is one of the most tragic cinema characters I've seen for a while. The influences are clear here, with me being reminded of films like Vagabond, Rosetta and Lilya-4-Ever. I don't think it's the best new wave movie I've seen but an important one and always good to tick something like this off the list.
3.5
'Dancer in the Dark' (2000)
I'm not a fan of musicals, and I possibly wouldn't have watched this if I knew it was a musical, but I'm fond of Bjork's music. I completely loved this movie. It blew me away. Extraordinary, moving, incredible, fantastic. Not enough superlatives to describe it. It's well documented that Bjork had her run ins with von Trier on set, but whatever happened worked in the film sense at least, because she is utterly fantastic. Selma's romantic ambitions to make it in the USA are as delusional as the American dream itself. Perhaps that's why this movie wasn't that well received in America - because it's a thinly veiled criticism on the country and its' psyche. Selma says at one point : "In a musical, nothing dreadful ever happens", well von Trier put that to bed with his bleak but beautiful Dogme style. The way the music numbers appear from the most mundane sounds is nothing short of brilliance. This movie made me feel like I want to feel when I watch movies, then again if they were all like this none would stand out in the crowd. Bjork is perfect, the script is perfect, the direction is perfect.
5
'Life' (2017)
Looked beautiful. Decent twist. No huge mis-steps in performances. But it's just a recycled monster movie set in space.

Kept busy over the last week so here we go:
https://worldfilmgeek.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/purgeofkingdoms-poster.jpg?w=453&h=680
Purge of Kingdoms (Ara Paiaya, 2019): A Mel Brooks-Monty Python-esque parody of Game of Thrones from Paiaya, who is usually known for his martial arts action films. A nice breakway from his usual shtick, with a nice ensemble cast including Angus MacFadyen, Lou Ferrigno, and Anna Hutchison.

https://worldfilmgeek.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/masterzipmanlegacy-2019.jpg?w=386&h=573
Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (Yuen Woo-Ping, 2018): Great spin-off to Ip Man 3, highlighted by Max Zhang's character and despite some wirework stunts, overall a good effort especially Zhang's throwdowns with Michelle Yeoh (as a benevolent Triad leader who only fights Zhang due to a misunderstanding), Tony Jaa (as a mercenary who used to work with Zhang), and Dave Bautista (as the big bad villain, an American restaurateur who used his business as a cover for drug dealing).

https://worldfilmgeek.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/leodavinci-missionmonalisa.jpeg?w=387&h=516
Leo Da Vinci: Mission Mona Lisa (Sergio Manfio, 2019): A fun Italian-made animated film about young inventor Leonardo Da Vinci, who in an effort to win the heart of young Lisa, goes on an adventure to find a treasure with pirates chasing him, Lisa, and two young homeless kids, Niccolo and Agnes. It's a fun film that has elements of The Goonies with a great English voice cast including Johnny Yong Bosch and Bryce Pappenbrook, two veteran English voice actors for Japanese anime as the titular Leo and bestie Lorenzo respectively.

4.0
https://worldfilmgeek.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/thegate.jpg?w=392&h=612
The Gate (Tibor Takacs, 1987): Definitely an underrated horror film with the debut of Stephen Dorff as he, sister, and friend attempt to find a way to close the gate of Hell that's in their backyard. One very sick gross-out scene, but I would love a figure version of the demonic minions.
3.5
https://worldfilmgeek.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/sometimestheycomebackagain.jpg?w=390&h=586
Sometimes They Come Back...Again (Adam Grossman, 1996): A sequel to a made for TV movie, there is only one reason to see this movie: the late Alexis Arquette in the role of the lead villain. She was both charismatic and funny at the same time as a demon from our hero's past, ready to get his own revenge for what happened 30 years ago. Nice inventive deaths including the use of tarot cards as weapons.
3.5
https://worldfilmgeek.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/powerofgrayskull.jpeg?w=388&h=548
Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (Randall Bobb & Robert McCallum, 2019): Excellent documentary about the history of He-Man, from his origins at Mattel to the hit animated series at Filmation to the 1987 live-action film. Great interviews including former Mattel artists, Filmation directors, and Alan Oppenheimer (voice of Skeletor), Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Anthony De Longis, and production designer William Stout. If you're a fan of He-Man, this is a must-see!

Support The Girls
Don't let the scantily clad waitresses on the poster fool you, this is no fluffy exploitative film. Mainly set over the course of a single day at Whammies, a Texas sports bar, the main focus is on General Manager Lisa dealing with an attempted break-in, personal issue and an unhinged boss, all while acting as a surrogate mother for the waitresses at the bar.
Regina Hall is fantastic, rarely off screen she holds the whole film together and it does dip slightly when the focus moves away from her later in the film. Haley Lu Richardson plays her trusted deputy and lights the screen up whenever she appears with a never-ending supply of optimism with Shayna McHayle providing a more world weary view as Danyelle.
This film was a pleasant surprise as I was expecting more of a comedy but instead got a warm, touching and affecting story of women banding together to support each other as a family and I now can't wait to delve into Regina Kings back catalogue.

The Cloud-Capped Star (Meghe Dhaka Tara) (1960) by Ritwik Ghatak
My first film by Ghatak, but definitely not the first Indian melodrama, sets the stage for a complex family drama. The Cloud-Capped Star relies heavily on feelings and the sentiment of the struggle of the poor. A rather bleak film with over the top aesthetic choices underlining the central circular narrative. It's use of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds seems at times both rather experimental and at times verging on the thin line between powerful and over the top. Together with Charulata (1964) by Satyajit Ray it may have one of the strongest endings of Indian film from the sixties. As with Ray, there seemingly seems to be aesthetic choices, which reminds you of Italian Neorealism and to some extent the nouvelle vague. In terms of the narrative, the film caught my interest in the second part (last hour), where the decline of the protagonist and the rise of her brothers, made a interesting reversal of roles, in a circular narrative.
Highly recommended if you are interested in social realists melodramas from India

'Light of my Life' (2019)
Dir.: Casey Affleck

Pure loved it. Right up my street. Affleck wrote, directed and starred in it.....and he's great. It's set in a dystopian world where a disease has wiped most of the females on earth out. So the father daughter bond is the main theme but also has ties to femininity and parenting struggles. And while Affleck's past will no doubt be mentioned given the subject matter, he does a really good job of putting us in the moment. Anna Pniowsky is fabulous as the 12 year old daughter 'Rag' - whose appearance was very 400 Blows like.
There are a few moments which perhaps were a bit unnecessary, and I'm not sure what Elisabeth Moss really brought to the table. But overall it is one of the best of 2019 so far.

For my money, the second best film of 2000 (Requiem for a Dream was the best), but Steven Soderbergh did blindside Ridley Scott winning Best director for his seamless weaving of three different stories about the war against drugs. Benicio Del Toro also won Best Supporting Actor, but if it had been up to me, that award would have gone to Don Cheadle for the same film.

It actually won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar, which still has me scratching my head, and Whoopi Goldberg's Oscar-winning performance just looks sillier with each re-watch. I'm pretty sure that Oscar was a consolation prize for the one that she really should have won for The Color Purple.

I'm very into my ghost stories at the moment so it's nice that these are being shown. Made by Thames Television and apparently full of faces that are completely new to me. These two tales have a similar premise and both involve a duo experiencing a supernatural event. Ironic in a week where Witchfinder General (1968) was shown that Matthew Hopkins should figure in the second episode :). The previous week it was funny to see Gareth Thomas using an – albeit poshed-up – Welsh accent ;).

This is one of the movies that would've kept getting bumped down my NF queue for years if I had actually been paying attention to the queue. I wasn't, so they sent it and I prepared a bowl of cauliflower and celery with some blue cheese dressing, a couple Coors Lights and sat down to watch it.
What was good? There's potential for future Aquaman stuff mostly because Jason Momoa is so likeable, it's been awhile since I've seen Dolph in a film so that was nice, some of the underwater scenes, especially the cities, looked pretty nifty, Amber Heard and her swimsuit looked pretty nifty, the cauliflower and celery was about as good as it gets and I was reminded to update my NF queue. The bad: too long, thought the fight scenes were a tad dull, with the exception of the undwerwater setting everything else had a been there done that feeling, Patrick Wilsons bad guy was like the Coors Light, watered down/uninteresting/bland.

Mystery Train (1989)
A relatively early film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, it features off-beat comedy, unusual scenarios, and his patented sparse dialogue (with the silence in between seemingly as important as the spoken word).
It features 3 episodes which are slowly tied together, almost as a musical chord-- the notes of each unaware of the others. The third episode was a bit ponderous, pushed along by a then characteristic performance by Steve Buscemi. Yet it was all tied up in the end by the movie backing out from where it started.
Performances of note were the delightful Yuki Kudo, whose ditzy character put me in mind of several memorable Japanese actresses who lamentably have appeared then disappeared from U.S. films. "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins did a nice turn as the night clerk, in an understated and quirky fashion.
This is one of those pictures that provides plenty of laughs, but also keeps popping into one's mind the day after its viewing.

Tales That Witness Madness (1973) – 6/10
An anthology film and a strange one at that, more because of the cast than anything else. One of the barriers to full enjoyment is an unfortunate tendency to post-sync dialogue in places, where the mouths and the words are rarely in total harmony.
My favourite of the stories is Mel, which stars Michael Jayston and Joan Collins and involves a man
starting to prefer a piece of wood to his own wife :).
Peter McEnery impressed me in Penny Farthing because he made the scenario so authentic and believable – so much so that I was reminded of The Entity (1982), which is no bad thing. I was conscious a lot of the time of how the film might be remade today and what could be improved. For example
the expressions of Uncle Albert's haunted portrait desperately needed more stills to fully come alive
Luau is very good at times, especially the
viscerally brutal murder of Ginny.
I understand that Rita Hayworth was originally going to play the mother but for ill health. It would have been great to see her but I reasoned that Kim Novak fitted the bill more, particularly as the mother of Mary Tamm's character. Novak is very over-the-top physically, with a lot of arm waving and theatricality – not to say that the character shouldn't have been like this to some degree, and I thought the post-syncing could be said to exacerbate the sense of overplay.
Donald Pleasence attracted me to the film as I am more and more interested in him as a character actor. Here he is very low-key and the subtlety is deafening :). I recently saw some of the 1962 film Doctor Crippen, where he appears alongside Samantha Eggar, and this is almost a snapshot of that brilliant role.

Fantastically shot with clever camera positions and well thought out set design. Joon Ho's latest was awarded the Palm D'Or at Cannes and you can see why. His previous films have had something to say about societal structures, norms and practices. This is no different with issues if materialism / class boundaries at play. There's also nods to South Korea's relationship with the North and the USA.
There are a couple of moments that rely on the viewer suspending their belief (the final act is a bit much) but the film isn't supposed to be a literal tale - more a figurative piece. The direction of this film is absolutely magical, even if the sum of it's parts doesn't quite live up to the hype.
It gets a 7.5 / 10

The story takes place in apartheid South Africa where a school teacher and former rugby star is drawn into conflict with the secret police over the disappearance of his gardner's son. This 1970 Best Picture nominee is a serious guilty pleasure of mine and introduced movie audiences to a brand new genre called the disaster movie. It's pretty loyal to the Arthur Hailey novel it's based on and holds up surprisingly well. Some of the performances are a little overripe, but I love the gorgeous Jacqueline Bisset as the head stewardess and Van Heflin is properly intense as the slightly mad DO Guerrero. Helen Hayes won an Oscar for her adorable little old lady stowaway, but personally I think that award should have gone to Maureen Stapleton, in a heartbreaking turn as Inez Guerrero.

It depends on the story but I think time travel as the solution often feels weak (Star Trek had this a lot, with poor time travel logic). I've still not seen X-Men: Days of Future Past in full but it alienated me from the franchise because of the sway towards science fiction (my genre!), the amount of characters, and the time travel link up with the original cast. To be fair the method of time travel there is very believable and interesting – I'd compare it to Quantum Leap.

Rather under-whelming drama about a cartel counselor that decides to take a walk on the wild side and become involved in the real high earning end part of his every-day life. Considering the cast, director and writer it's quite pallid and can't decide what it wants to be. A talky, contemplative film (McCarthy), or a multi-character quick-cut film (Scott). Ultimately I don't think the source material, director or actors produced anything memorable at all.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2018, B)
Committed and affectionate collage of the late 60s à la Inherent Vice, The Long Goodbye etc., using the three stars as indicators of up and downs in the industry hurtling towards a cultural shock. But what if...the shock never happened?? For once, Tarantino's blatant indulgences come across well and immerse us in the period, but simultaneously show off his weak spots. Are the hippies just too idiotic?
