The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer (1961)

The final film in this over 9 hour long epic trilogy again follows the character of Kaji. The first half of this film is kind of a dark survival adventure, and I absolutely loved it. The second half is terrific as well, but I started to feel it's length. That's pretty much how I felt about the whole trilogy. All three are great films and well worth watching, but not quite personal favorites.

I think I have watched right around 50 for the list because I am at 63 total. Your a boss.:up: Well, 50 in the past year. I am sure some were before the list officially started.

The Man Who Woud Be King (1975)

http://files.list.co.uk/images/2010/05/26/MSDMAWH_EC004_H.jpg

Great film in every aspect and in my humble opinion, it also features Connery's best acting performance. He's fantastic in this.
John Huston is a master and this is the kind of picture he was best at. He's definitely one of the greatest ever when it comes to making on-location adventures (and period pieces) with rich content (and also simply one of the best directors of all time, period). His camera is so fluent and unforced, while always remaining extremely focused. This is one of my favorite films of his (from what I've seen so far).

This great movie could easily make my next top 100 list. I loved it! It's an instant new favorite!

Really glad I re-watched this. I thought it was fine fifteen years ago but I really liked it a lot more this time. There are some exceptional scenes in this film. My favorite has to be when Ben asks Mrs. Robinson to hold off on the sex and talk to him. The conflict escalates quickly and lasts throughout the rest of the film. I really love the sterile look of this film and the camera work overall is spectacular. I loved the music of course and the ending is one of the greats. My big problem with the film is still Elaine's motivations. This is a girl that has everything going for her, run from the stalker. It is a small gripe though. The Graduate will become part of my viewing rotation and earn some points from me in the 60's countdown.

Visually this is the complete opposite of The Graduate. We are shown the grimy side of NY by some very grimy characters. The relationship of Joe and Ratso is key and both sad and hilarious to watch unfold. That and the performances are where the film shine. Voight and Hoffman are both fantastic. Again the music and ending are major highlights of the film.

This is a southern noir/crime/thriller with three very good performances from Don Johnson, Sam Shepard, and Michael C. Hall. It has tension, a couple of nice twists, and a bit of a seedy side. It's definitely my kind of movie and I completely enjoyed it. The only problem-it's not very memorable.

Jrs, thanks for reminding me of Wes Craven's New Nightmare. I still need to see that one.
MovieGal, thanks for that pic of Alexandra Daddario from San Andreas. It seems to be the go-to pic of her from the film. Anyway, I like it a lot! :)

I checked out one on cable that turns out I'd seen the last part of. It's called Prowl (2010) and it's a decent little horror flick. A group of post-teen friends hitch a ride in the trailer of a semi truck and soon find out they are in a load of trouble with certain creatures of the night hunting them. Although low-budgeted, the movie makes up for it with decent acting and a twist ending that I didn't see coming the first time around. The lead actress, Courtney Hope, is good and very cute IMO, which doesn't hurt. It's not in-your-face scary but it's a bit tense and has good action. I'd recommend it, even if you like horror just a little bit.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

I think it was Gatsby who recently stated that although he liked it, the constant singing stopped it from getting a higher score. I completely agree with this. Like Gats, I do like musicals, although I havn't seen enough of them, but I did find the uninterrupted singing especially with no dancing a bit too much for my taste. It was a great story with a fantastic ending, superbly acted and is probably one of the most beautifully filmed movie ive seen.

rating_3_5

If it had no singing, the magic of the film woulnd't exist. It was written as if it was to spoken but instead it was sung. No rhyme, no defined melody... The moment they are together it's the first moment when you have a defined melody, rhyme and metric lyrics. And then that theme comes from time to time to remember that moment even if they are far away. That's the main power of this movie and that's why I rate it so high exactly because it's sung.

Kidnapped (2010) 3.5

A married couple and their 18 year old daughter are having their first night in their nice new home, when three masked intruders burst inside with robbery on their minds. Of course, things do not go well. This movie is very well made; terrific direction and fine acting. It uses only twelve long takes which makes it feel like you're watching it in real time. It also uses the split screen very well. This is a very intense and upsetting movie. There is not a single light moment in it's entirety, and the ending is not a happy one. This movie is an excellent inclusion into the home invasion subgenre, and was a great recommendation to me by MovieGal.

Yeah it did. Like I said it did have a lot of cliche elements, but since there aren't too many dinosaur films that come out it still doesn't seem too stale. When (not if...WHEN) they announce multiple sequels it'll definitely get overly stale by the time Jurassic World 3 hits.

Jurassic World (2015)

I had absolutely no problem with this movie. I loved the first Jurassic film and liked the 2nd and 3rd one. In fact, the only really unlikable character from the films for me was Tea Leoni in the 3rd film, who spent half the film screaming. I think they made a nod to this in this film when Chris Pratt tells Bryce Dallas Howard to stop screaming so they won't get killed, and she does what he says. Good girl!

Yes, they're messing with genetics again, but to be fair, the character played by B.D. Wong is not telling anyone everything he's putting into the mix, which is a plot point. And, of course there is a greedy corporate person in the mix also. Never a good thing. As far as I could tell, these two people were over Bryce Dallas Howard's pay grade and were not compelled to tell her.

Anyway, back to the movie. It wouldn't be a Jurassic Park movie unless the dinosaurs ran amok, that's why I go to see them. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard were fine in their leading roles and Vincent D'Onofrio was very good in his supporting part. There were no real scary scenes, but lots of great action. When I saw the previews, I thought the scene with Pratt on the motorcycle with the raptors running beside him looked a bit wonky, but it's all explained and he does give them sidelong looks as if he doesn't quite trust them.

And I'm glad that, finally, someone has enough forethought to arm themselves with actual working weapons and shoot at the dinosaurs! In the previous three movies, it seemed like it was all about "dinosaur rights" (blah, blah, blah) and the aim was not to use weapons (by the filmmakers not the characters) so most of the characters didn't have any weapons on them. A prerequisite, methinks. Anyway, a good action-filled two hours.

This. I have to wonder about the people who are complaining that there's "nothing new" here. What were they expecting? Were the dinosaurs supposed to evolve to the point that they develop or steal weapons and start shooting back at the people? WTF?

It's a fun summer adventure and a special effects driven movie that was always just going to be about dinosaurs running loose on an island and eating people. I wouldn't have it any other way.

A Good Marriage

The premise for the movie seemed good however this was a dull movie with poor acting. I thought this would be a gripping thriller with a bit more action however I received a boring movie with nothing much that happened at all. Even the actors looked bored and very monotone, Joan Allen looked like she just received some face work and still was in the aftermath. The ending was really just the icing on the cake for how bad this movie was, I though ok here we go something might happen here but nope nothing what so ever. Nothing is memorable in the movie besides at how boring it is.

The Lazarus Effect

Sort of a weird movie I guess, labelled as a Horror but really there is like 1 or 2 jump scares. The movie goes into morality and should we be researching into bringing people back to life. To me is seemed more of a sci-fi cross horror, I like Olivia Wilde and this is probably the only good thing this movie had to offer. I think the budget was placed more into getting Olivia than anything else, there was a lot of potential though going into a area that really has not been explored in horror.

Billy Wilder directed this Cold War comedy in which James Cagney plays the boss at the West Berlin Coca-Cola Company. He gets a call from his boss, who wants him to host and watch over his dim-witted and boy crazy teenage daughter. Complications arise when she sneaks off and marries a communist. Cagney's character first tries to sabotage the husband, and then tries to make him presentable, before the boss arrives in town.

I've always known of James Cagney, but I'm not sure if I've seen any of his other movies. From my perspective, this was an unusual role for him, as I've always thought of him as a legendary tough guy actor. He handles the comedy exceptionally well, and the rest of the cast full of actors unknown to me, also have their chances to shine.

http://alsolikelife.com/shooting/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/onetwothree-12.jpg

I wasn't sure I was going to like this movie, because I just don't care for a lot of the older comedies. I love comedies, but it's mostly the Animal House/Old School type of movies that are on the raunchy side. This turned out to be a consistently very funny movie. What sets it apart is it's non-stop frantic pace. The characters act fast and talk fast, and the viewer barely gets a chance to think, only to react. The setting of this movie provides much of the humor. Using the song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini as a method of torture is pure brilliance.

The Naked Island (1960)

2.5

Very much a minimalist film which isn't my thing. It reminded me of Jeanne Dielman, which is something I never want to be reminded of. Not bad though at only 95 minutes long. There's really no dialogue; just a couple of words without subtitles about half way through, and then the wailing of a character at the end. It does do a nice job of transporting you into it's world, it looks very good, has an effective musical score, and has a strong finish. Overall, I had some appreciation for it, but it's a movie for a special kind of viewer.

This is so freaking good. The musical numbers are, as we can expect from the genius of Busby Berkeley, absolutely magnificent, but the rest of the film was also really interesting and wildly entertaining to watch.

Of the three legendary Warner Brothers musicals of 1933 (42nd Street, Footlight Parade and this one), I think Gold Diggers of 1933 is ultimately my favorite. Taking every aspect into account, it's the best of them all.

42nd Street has some interesting content and I love the character of the producer in that film (and of course it has some of the Busby Berkeley magic as well), so that's my second favorite. The very ending of the film has a strange emotional resonance to it.

Footlight Parade probably has the most insane musical numbers of all three films (there's truly some fabulously grotesque stuff in it) and it's also pretty interesting throughout, but because it leans too much on its (admittedly stunning) finale, I'd say it's my third favorite overall film. It's a really close call, though.

Anyway, I love all three of these legendary classic 1933 musicals and if you haven't seen them yet, you should immediately. I couldn't recommend these films highly enough. They're cinematic GOLD.

Training Day (2001) Rewatch

Antoine Fuqua's crime masterpiece that I haven't seen in many years. Denzel and Hawke make a fantastic duo on-screen. The film had many twists and turns that I forgot about that made the rewatch completely worth it. I'm kicking myself for having forgotten it when I made my top 100 favs, as it would've had a good chance of making the cut. Highly recommended for any fan of crime movies.

La piel que habito a.k.a. The Skin I Live In (2011)

Another Almodovar great movie. This one is probably his most twisted and thrilling film, with an impressive use of flashbacks, great acting from the 2 main characters and an incredible sountrack by Alberto Iglesias, one of my favourite soundtrack composers.
There are some great bits of cinematography and the tension created in some scenes is among some of the best work by Almodovar. As soon as I have all my 60s movies seen, I'll watch the rest of Almodovar's filmography.

Saw this in IMAX 3D. IMAX is awesome, 3D isn't. Would have been a much better experience if it was just normal IMAX. Anyway the actual movie is horribly written. It's hard to believe this came from the writing team of the new Planet of the Apes movies. Witless and charmless. Every character is completely unlikable, they even made Chris Pratt unlikable. How is that even possible ? The big dino-action scenes are well done, it's visually impressive, but the writing is just so terrible that I can't recommend it.

Closer - 7.5/10

Surprised I hadn't heard of this before, I went in knowing nothing about it and ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Great character study with good acting all round, Owen and Portman being the staand outs for me. A bit depressing how it all worked out but I suppose it was the best you could hope for with the dynamic between these four.

The script was fantastic, I think it was structured very well, I'm guessing they were aiming for us to both dislike and feel sorry for each one at different points in the story, before realizing at the end that they are just four flawed people making difficult life choices whether right or wrong. If that was the case then I think they largely succeeded; except I never disliked Portman for a second during this.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - 6/10

Honestly I think I would've liked this a lot more without certain CIA scenes and most of all without Julia Roberts who brought nothing to this IMO. Sam Rockwell was great, I would've liked more focus on his descent into madness I know you could argue that happened from the first scene but there was a bit too much normalcy for me personally. Still I really enjoyed this it makes me want to watch Good Night and Good Luck . Also I only realized it was written by Phillip Kauffman during the credits, always enjoy that guys screenwriting.

While I think Kurosawa did this idea better with "Dodes'ka-den", Amarcord is a very impressively made film and a lot of fun throughout. Crazy how this movie has no extras, every person in this town is a character. Between this and Nights of Cabiria, I really need to see more Fellini.

Not my favorite Ozu but still a very good movie. I wasn't a big fan of the overall cast in this one, not that anybody wasn't good, but they just didn't capture me as a whole. I love that old dude who seems to be in most Ozu movies, but he had a very small role in this. That disappointed me. Even so, a nice story and ending, and his films relax me and give me a feeling of contentment.

A delicate and stunning looking masterpiece.

I think all three of Ozu's '60s films are going to make my top 25 list and I hope many others will vote for them too.
It's perhaps still a bit early to say this after only having seen four of his films, but I am already considering Ozu as one of my three favorite directors, if not my all time favorite, period.

Every single image in this film (and the other Ozu films I've seen so far) succeeds in surprising me with a profound layeredness and a rare beauty. The story is also constantly engaging and interesting. He easily flows from humoristic moments to heartbreaking drama and from quiet apartment rooms and images of neon-lit city streets to some of the most beautiful shots of nature ever captured on film.

I simply happen to like all the typical recurring elements in Ozu's pictures. It's amazing how perfectly his films correlate with my personal tastes. I really can't properly express the appreciation and respect I have for this man's vision. I would like to use words like "divine" and "heavenly", but I feel like they don't do him justice, because his films are so extremely humane, humble and down to earth...

Swan pointed out to me that this is a pinky film. I'm not exactly sure if that means Japanese exploitation, but it does have that kind of content. It doesn't have that kind of feel though; it's a very sad, bleak story that's not played for thrills. Very low budget but at the same time it seemed to me to be made really well. It's only 65 minutes long and is an interesting combination of the real and surreal. Great musical score too.

Get on Up (2014)

This autobiography of James Brown, starring a fantastic Chadwick Boseman in the lead, goes back and forth in time, but is never tedious for doing so, and in fact requires your rapt attention for doing so. The supporting cast was excellent, with Nelsan Ellis excellent as James' best friend and band member, Bobby Byrd; Octavia Spencer as his aunt; Viola Davis as his mother; and Dan Aykroyd excelling as his long-time manager Ben Bart. Usually, it's hard for me to see Aykroyd in a movie and not think of him as reprising a SNL character but he was far from that in this one. But this is about James and his music and Boseman and the director cover that well. Recommended.

Furious 7, 3.8/5. Not the best in the series, but still great nonetheless. The tribute to Paul Walker at the end was also a nice touch. I have to say some of the lines and actions were a bit cheesy, like Dom's line about the street winning, and The Rock's character ripping off his cast and then handling a mini-gun was also pretty stupid, but all in all, I liked it enough. I'd say 5 and 6 were both better, but this wasn't the worst action movie I've seen even this year, so it gets a pass. It should have been better than it was though.

Seconds - 6/10 (could have been a 10 though)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3a/Seconds_poster.jpg

I just finished "Seconds". I think the theme was great, but I felt the film was flawed in that it had a lot of holes. It was only 90 minutes long, and I felt the script and the scenes concentrated on things outside of the theme. For instance, the Hollywood Production Code was coming to an end. The film used way too much time on the first part. 1966 was probably the first I saw a woman entirely nude on film, and people like seeing it, but it shouldn't be a substitute for quality. That scene could have been 10 seconds, not 10 minutes. It finally did pick up when Hudson goes to see his "wife" - we learn more about him, yet, we learn that she knew hardly anything about him. I think it would have been better to maybe go back and add ten minutes to the beginning... Concentrating on the philosophical aspects of the theme, instead of the terror, questions unanswered, focusing on what's important in life, how a new life and success doesn't necessarily mean a better life. How we might appreciate things, especially our life until we don't have it. Maybe dreaming is the best part of life? Maybe once you have everything you thought you want you were either wrong, or you have an empty feeling as there is nowhere to go from there, like "What now?"

Daredevil 2015

After binge watching it over two days it certainly felt like I was watching an incredibly long movie.

I had very low expectations after Marvel's other small screen outings but Daredevil is something different entirely. High production values, excellent cast and unexpected plot twists.

Quien sabe? a.k.a. A Bullet for the general (1966)

http://www.c1n3.org/d/damiani01d/Images/1966%20El%20chuncho,%20quien%20sabe%20-%20Yo%20soy%20la%20revolucion%20(mex)%20(lc)%2001.jpg

At least 4 spaghetti western will definitely make my 60's list and I wanted to watch a last one before I send my list in. A Bullet for the General is a very solid one, but not particularly memorable. The story is enjoyable and it never feels too long, due to a very good pacing. However, it's equal to dozens of other westerns... The last 30 minutes are quite good though. Gian Maria Volonté and Klaus Kinski are 2 actors I enjoy very much so it was good to see them here. Bacalov is also a composer who I like very much, though he's not Morricone, and his soundtrack here has some very good moments.
A good film overall, though not worthy to make the Top movies of the decade.

Japanese horror in which a mother and her daughter-in-law are living alone after the son/husband is taken away to fight in battle. Samurai raid the women's home, raping and killing them, and burning down their hut. They return as ghosts in human form, with a vow to the god of evil to drink the blood of every samurai. Complications arrive when the son/husband returns, now a respected samurai himself. This movie is not especially scary or shocking, but it's tragic and very creepy. It also has great atmosphere and cinematography.

Bit of a slow-burner with a strange plot. The performances were great and the cinematography was excellent - capturing to essence of gritty, inner city life. Tom Hardy was especially good as the nice guy barman with a tainted past. It's obvious that this film was written by the author of Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone as it has the same kind of structure - different pieces slowly coming together to a surprise ending. Not that the ending wasn't effective, I just didn't like the route the film took in places to get there.

I found James Gandolfini's character hilarious at times, especially during the scene when he runs the guy over in his car, and the way he runs way afterwards had me splitting my sides. The Chechen gangsters' brief appearances were quite funny as well, I thought. The use of the dog as a plot device was interesting if a little strange, but it was really cute so what the hell. If anything, The Drop proves how versatile an actor Tom Hardy is. The English Joaquin Phoenix if you will.

The Immigrant (2013)....this really looked great, I believed I was actually looking at the poor immigrant sections of New York city. Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix were both very dynamic. I have no complaints but the story wasn't the one I wanted to see, but still it was skillfully written.

I think a lot of people would like this one.

It visually creates the mind in a very accessible minimalist way, but then keeps pulling out more and more stuff as the movie goes. It's really funny too and spring loaded with a lot of little clever nods. It's hard for me to talk about it because I don't want to spoil anything, but I enjoyed it even more than Mad Max, definitely worth the 8 bucks and the trip to the theater.

Jurassic World(2015) 4.0

I finally went to see it about 6 hours ago and I just got to my computer. I don't really like getting too deep into reviews when I do them, I usually type not even a paragraph but I've been waiting 14 years to see this. First off I want to get out of the way that this is the best sequel to Jurassic Park IMO. Hands down.Although I really do like The Lost World too, but this movie was something I was always interested in seeing. A fully functional opened park.

Here are my pros and cons for this movie: *CONTAINS SPOILERS*
Pros:
1. Dinosaur action - fully entertaining
2. The Final battle with the T-Rex & Raptor vs The I-Rex - I loved it, I was literally shaking with excitement during the scene when Claire leads the T-Rex out. For a second I did believe that the T-Rex might bite it, as I thought all the raptors were dead but one seemed to survive somehow after I just watched the I-Rex whoop all their asses.
3. The 1 Animatronic - The scene with the dying sauropod for some weird reason was getting a lot of hate, but I thought it was done well.
4. The Acting - It was a little better than I was expecting it to be. Not saying it was Oscar worthy at all but a lot of the acting scenes in the trailer that I feared were gonna be bad seemed to either be edited and/or were edited really weird in the trailer but in the final cut of the movie weren't as bad so that was a sigh of relief, but tbh there were a lot of cheesy acting scenes as well, but I wasn't going to see this movie for the acting lol
5. The Indominus Rex - Was a pretty good villain dino. I suspect that this isn't the last we'll see of a I-Rex as Wu ran(flew) off with other embryos and InGen came in and pretty much strip mined the place.
6. All the nods to the Original - I loved them all and I'm pretty sure I noticed them all, I might have missed a couple. I will be picking it up on dvd once it is out so I'll re-watch it to see if I can spot more nods.
7. CGI - A lot better than I was expecting as well, some shots weren't the greatest but overall it was good.
8. Henry Wu having a bigger role in this film - The one con I have about the first JP movie was that Wu had barely any role in the film at all aside from giving some info at the beginning of the film. It was nice to see Henry Wu have a bigger role. I think B.D. Wong is an underused and underated actor as well and it is nice to see we may have our villain now set up for future JW movies (This film is making bank at the box office, sequels are being made whether we want them or not)

Cons:
1. Hoskins' death - It seemed so forced. One minute Owen, Claire and the boys are in the lab with a whole bunch of soldiers and Hoskins but the one raptor ignores Owen, Claire, the boys, and all the other soldiers and goes straight for Hoskins. It felt really out of place and I wish they would have done it better.
2. The Acting - I know I put this for the pro as well but this is because despite some of the scenes from the trailers turning out better in the actual movie there were many new scenes that I saw within the movie itself that weren't in the trailer that caused some problems for me. There was plenty of cheesy dialogue in this movie and that just took me out of the movie sometimes, but it didn't ruin the movie for me as a whole.
3. The I-Rex's death - I know it looked cool but I was not satisfied with the mosasaurus getting the last punch(chomp). I was hoping that Rexy would be getting the kill shot and I was a little disappointed that the T-Rex was pretty much just a distraction most of that final scene instead of being the driving force to defeat the I-Rex, it's like the T-Rex can't beat anybody on its own in these movies anymore.
4. No little Cameos from any of the original main cast in person aside from Wu - I knew none of the originals were gonna play a huge part in this movie and I was fine with that, but I was hoping for a little something. There is a brief shot in the command center at the bottom of the screen when Jake Johnson's character is talking to the other women about her having a boyfriend and the shot pans out to show books on one of the desks in front of them and it shows Malcolm's book and it actually shows Malcolm on the back of the book posing, it's a little blurry but you can see him and tell its him. I liked that, but it would of been nice to have a little scene on a tv broadcast or something. That's just the die hard JP fan in me talking lol. Neill and Goldblum are getting up there in age and I'd love to see one of them reprise their role one last time even in a small cameo in a future film would satisfy me immensely.
5. Jimmy Fallon's cameo - I'm sorry guys but I can't stand him and his cameo in JW was noticeably bad. I didn't laugh at all at his scenes.
6. The use of the original music was a little off - Many scenes they used the original music from the first 2 films was a bit iffy. Most of the scenes they used it in had no sense of wonder so the music really wasn't needed, but there were also spots where the music was spot on.

Overall it was not a bad movie and a damn fine sequel to JP, but there are a lot of ways they could of improved it immensely.

A fascinating film! The border between reality and fantasy is so thin at certain times... It stars in a similar tone as Death Poets Society but it quickly degenerates into something darker, much closer to Clockwork Orange. McDowell's perfomance is brilliant, I could see CW's "Alex" here sometimes!
Overall it has that feeling I love in a movie, though I never can explain what it is exactly.

Bronson (2008)

A very strange, wild, and interesting film based on true events. Tom Hardy stars as Michael Peterson, also known by his fighting name Charles Bronson, who became the UK's most dangerous prisoner.

This fictional biographical drama film feels like it's one half A Clockwork Orange, one quarter One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, and one quarter Fight Club.

I highly recommend it, but I must warn that there is quite a bit of frontal male nudity.

You see, we need these kinds of warnings. Perhaps you could start a thread specifically dedicated to frontal male nudity in film. You would have to look up to see what movies have frontal male nudity in them, and then watch them and report back. You could just watch those scenes and let us know how far into the movie they are, and how graphic it is and things like that. That way, the rest of us would know when to cover our eyes when we watch these movies. Everybody has a thing they do for the forum; this could be your thing.

Better than the other Jurassic Park sequels, but not even in the same ball-park as the original.
The visuals were there, but the writing was really weak and all of the characters were pretty unlikable other than maybe Chris Pratt. The child actors were god awful.
There were parts of the film so bad that I laughed, so I still think I got my money's worth. Definitely don't watch it in 3D though.

Sense8 2015

Sense8 is full of Wachowski themes we've seen before and episode structure is so different and seemingly disjointed (at least at first) that it might put people off. But it has so much to offer. Crossing all lines of personality, gender, sexuaily and enthinicity. Reminding us all how similar and connected we all are. I absolutely loved it.

A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014)

Excellent action/drama as Neeson's private detective character, Matt Scudder, is hired to find the men who killed a drug dealers wife and gave her back to him in little pieces. Neeson is great as usual, and there is a neat side story with Brian "Astro" Bradley as T.J., a young teen that wants to be a detective like Scudder. Their friendship helps greatly during the non-suspense or action parts. But it's all good.

Apocalypse Now - 4+

I am not a huge war-movie buff like a lot of people on this forum (I can obviously tell with the lists), but this one was very very well done. It gave me the creeps as it was deep and it made you wonder if you would make the same choices. Although I did give it a high rating, this isn't a movie I feel like could be comparable to my top movies because I would not have the strong URGE to rewatch it and that's nothing against the film itself, but it's against the genre. Highly recommended.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1: 8/10 - Good movie, but it's mostly just the three heroes traveling, so don't really expect a lot of magic battles to happen.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: 10/10 - Fantastic ending to the series! I'd say it's the second best, behind Prisoner of Azkaban.

In fact, this is how I'd rank them:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Deathly Hallows Part 2
3. Half-Blood Prince
4. Order of the Phoenix
5. Sorcerer's Stone
6. Deathly Hallows Part 1
7. Chamber of Secrets
8. Goblet of Fire

Order of the Phoenix
Half-Blood Prince
Deathly Hallows Pt. 1
Prisoner of Azkaban
Goblet of Fire

We seriously need more good dinosaur movies asap. I need to quench my thrist for dinosaurs that JW brought back up and the premise of this movie was actually sort of interesting but low budget movies are rarely ever good so I wasn't surprised this was a huge piece of crap. Even though JW's writing was weak it at least had good special effects and was a fun movie, this was just a frustrating mess that you could tell was made for the SyFy channel. The poster actually had a good dinosaur on it but the ones in the movie look so bad (see picture above). Funny thing is the ending set up a sequel so obviously but idk why you'd make a sequel to a piece of garbage like this.

Watched the 1955 French film titled Diabolique a few days ago and was really blown away! I was surprised at how intense and thrilling it was, I could hardly take my eyes off of the screen. Great camerawork and acting, and a wonderful twist ending. Loved the atmosphere and mood that it created, and the supernatural elements only added to my enjoyment. Psycho is of course a classic, but I found Diabolique to be much more entertaining and tense.

Someone I know said this was his favorite film, and someone else said how great it was. I was really let down. I didn't find any humor in this at all. It's not even close to satire, it's mockery and parody.

I've concluded never to watch anything that's under the category of "Comedy" unless it's by a director I love, special circumstances. The most funniest movies I saw weren't considered dramas at all... Plus if I want great satire, I'll watch standup.

Ben Affleck's best film, for me. Very well done, and you got to see Jeremy Renner giving the best performance of his career to date. Blake Lively and Rebecca Hall are very nice supporting actresses, and Lively definitely looked like she stepped out of her comfort zone for this. It is in my 25-30 range.

That guitar doe...the film gets two popcorns just from the guitar alone even though it made no sense to have it at all.

Action sequences were crazy good. I liked Hardy as Max. Theron was good and you could tell it was her movie but Hardy was the highlight for me. Not a big fan of Hoult though so his character was meh to me. Max spoke in like 3 word sentences the entire time but I was entertained by him throughout the entire film nevertheless. A great action film.

Gone Girl (2014)

Saw this finally and it was worth the wait. Anyone who's even seen the trailer gets an idea what the main thrust of the movie is, but there are twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I'm not the biggest Ben Affleck fan but he did a fine job in this. But no doubt, this is Rosamund Pike's movie. I've loved her since I first saw her years ago in a James Bond movie and have been following her career since. She deserved her nomination for Best Actress for this movie. Also making great impressions in this movie are Carrie Coon as Affleck's faithful sister, Kim Dickens as the lead investigator on Pike's missing persons case, and Tyler Perry as Affleck's lawyer. This is the first time I've watched Perry outside his "Madea" movies and I must say, he did a fine job. Overall, a compelling movie where you don't know what's going to happen even if you think you do. Kudos to David Fincher for his taut, tense directing here.

The Lonely Wife (1964)

3

A housewife in Calcutta is lonely because her husband works a lot. The husband notices this, so he has his cousin come to keep her company and help her with her writing. The wife begins to have feelings for the cousin. This is not some erotic thriller with adultery as a central theme. I think the viewer is supposed to feel for the wife, but I just didn't. I had a friend from Calcutta when I was young, and from what I understand, it is, or was, a poverty stricken city. This housewife lives very comfortably, has a husband who provides for her, loves her, and treats her well. I had no sympathy for her whatsoever under her circumstances. If she's lonely, she can get a dog. As far as I was concerned, she was fortunate. I didn't feel anything until the husband caught wind as to what was going on, but by then there was under a half hour left. It was an interesting movie with excellent direction and acting, but as far as me feeling anything, it came too late for me to consider this anything more than a little above average. I strongly prefer The Big City from director Ray.

It's not nearly as bad, in my opinion.

It's a well made (Soderbergh is such a talented director), truthful, dark and fascinating observation of "the desperate search for real human intimacy".
The film doesn't try to be brilliant about anything (apart perhaps from the "clever" context in which it tries to tackle its themes). It simply aims to make the viewer experience the frustrations and desires of its characters. I think it was fairly effective in doing that.

I definitely didn't feel like it was "uninteresting" or "pretentious" (as you seem to imply with that "thinks it's doing something brilliant" bit).

There's something to be said for the physical representing the emotional (and the influence one has on the other), in my opinion.

Great orgasms may not equal happiness, but in the empty culture that this film portrays and for the characters that inhabit it, "the physical" is a strangely complex part (and representation) of their state of mind.

You could see it as a lame thesis and many people will probably not relate to it, but I think it's a genuine reality for some people in this world.

I felt like it the film was trying to give a new perspective about sex and happiness through orgasms but only succeeding in creating characters that - as Mark mentioned - flawed and only revolving around the fact that a videotape is at the center of their lives.

The bizarre comparison was on purpose as a joke. From my memory, the James Spader and Andie MacDowell have sex and thus both of their dilemmas, real and existential, disappear in a melodic ending where they're now happy and whole. Sex (or good sex) is equated with their personal well being, and generally in the movie with the status of relationships (No sex = bad relationship).

Silent Japanese Movie , it's the first Ozu movie i see.
it's about childhood , it's about a family that moves to the suburbs and the struggle of the two young brothers to make new friends...
the story is shown from the perspective of the kids , the first part of the movie is simple, cute , about the universal struggles and worries of kids , the second part is more serious but as simple and universal , ozu treat in this film moving from childhood idealism into the risky terrain of adulthood.

i really liked the movie , and i'm looking for a lot more of Yasujiro Ozu in the future.

I completely blanked that because it was a comicbook film. Then one day I saw a clip of it and something about it appealed to me, so I gave it a go and I really liked it.

Inherit the Wind (1960)

A young schoolteacher is arrested for introducing the Darwin Theory to his students, which is in violation of state law, in a small, highly religious Nebraska town. Fredric March plays the prosecuting attorney, a man who also happens to be a big time bible thumper and former presidential candidate who is adored by the townspeople. The great Spencer Tracy plays the from out of town defense attorney, who also happens to be a long time friend and rival of the prosecutor's. Tracy's character soon learns that he has an uphill battle in this town full of religious fanatics. Gene Kelly plays a big city reporter, and Harry Morgan plays the judge. To complicate matters, the accused teacher is engaged to the daughter of the local Reverend. There is a small amount of well timed comic relief in this movie, but mostly it is great drama. It is a very well executed story with a strong ending, and it is stacked with great performances. Despite it's appearance on the Ebert great movie list and an IMDb rating of 8.2, I've only seen Neiba tout this film here on the forum. I thought it was a fantastic movie, the 4th I've seen from director Stanley Kramer made in the 60's after Judgment at Nuremberg, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, all featuring Spencer Tracy. Hopefully this movie has been seen by enough members to make an appearance on the upcoming 60's list.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

It's a quite lovable film.
There's some really good stuff, especially the whole plot and some of the cinematography! The script has some really nice moments too, and the ending is superb.
On the bad side, the acting is subpar (I can't understand all the praise Sinatra got from this movie) and people fall in love too quickly, as in a lot of noirs released around this time.
It's a good movie overall, though I didn't like it as much as I was expecting.

Good Will Hunting (1997)

This was a movie that I always looked over since it didn't seem like a movie I'd get into. I finally decided to give it a shot. Boy was I wrong, it was a great film. I regret not watching it earlier, but better late than never! Strong script by Damon and Affleck, with some very good acting from them also.

Lastly, RIP Robin Williams.
