The Conjuring 2. A little girl becomes the centre of a terrifying haunting in an ordinary English suburb in the 70s in the sequel to the original hit. My opinion of this is pretty much the same as when I saw it at the cinema last year - generally very good, some extremely frightening scenes especially in the first half, great performances, but it's a little too long (at 2hrs 15 it's a good 20 minutes longer than the original, which seems excessive), with a couple of silly bits (and am I really the only one who finds the nun more daft than scary? The old man is scarier!) and the climax veers on being so OTT it comes dangerously close to losing my interest. Still, like I said, generally very enjoyable, even if I do still prefer the original and probably Annabelle Creation too.

This held up remarkably well, there were some effects that didn't age that well like the mouse and cat scene but not many. It's one of the best childrens/family films ever IMO.

I really enjoyed it, kinda disappointed I never caught it on the big screen now, well there's always volume 3 which is a cert by the looks of things. Just a lot of fun, a minor gripe I had a very common one in comic book sequels is the the introduction of too many new characters, I felt the mantis lady wasn't needed although Dave Batista's harsh words towards her were brilliantly funny. All the characters are great but Batista is pure genius. Zoe Saldana is absolutely fine as that great thing, I want to find a female green thing too. Also the gold people are excellent can't quite remember what they're called but one day there will be a superior race of gold people I'm sure, you heard it here first.

Sure I was expecting an action bonanza but it's just a whole heep of nothing, a complete mess not helped in any way shape or form by the crazy annoying camera work and constant green, I now hate Keira more than I did before, she does nothing for me. Bounty hunters? Mickey Rourke couldn't be more Dog the bounty hunter if he started wearing a leather waistcoat and crocodile boots then he appears here. There were a few shots toward the end in the helicopter when the sun was setting that I liked and the ending wasn't terrible but honestly I hated it. The constant flash backs, flash forwards, zooming in, zooming out, black and white background, 90's raving background colours, purposefully blurry then into clear camera work, it was just all too much. The storyline was completely unoriginal too just hated it from start to finish. Can see why it cost 50m dollars to make and didn't get half of that back. I just want to add that the only time the camera stayed put was in the real time scenes with her and Lucy Liu and they were pure torture to watch as well.

Loved The Conjuring 2 myself! It was long for a horror movie, it could've definitely been shorter! While not as packed as the first Conjuring, I still enjoy it for what it is, and hell looking at horror sequels nowadays, I'll take what I can get. If anything, what makes this movie as good as it is, is the directing and the acting. James Wan has become so efficient in horror that any film he's involved in will at least have effective horror elements. The acting was great as well, it is so amazing when you see child actors be as good as this. I actually thought the nun was scarier, although I do not love what they did with her (it?) at the end. Yeah, this, the first Conjuring and Anabelle:Creation, are highlights in mainstream horror in the last couple of years.

I just love that Indiana (don't call him Junior) Jones and all his movies.
My movie of tonight is one of my all time favorite movies:
The Sound of Music
This is why we love movies - a true classic and I watch it every year and never tire of it. This movie gifts us an alternative world - a lot like reality (based on a true story) but a heightened reality that uplifts, transports, inspires the viewer. A world that one steps into and doesn't want to leave. The beauteous scenery, the timeless music, the actors who are so real it is as if they are one's own family. A story of love- the folk dance with Maria and Georg has to be one of the all time romantic scenes. And a story of escaping horror, thus as such the movie espouses a belief in the triumph of goodness over evil. And threaded by good humor and the evolution of character from everyone from the main characters to Leisl and the gossipy nun who sabotages the Nazi's cars even to Max,
If you can find a movie like this that makes you want to step out of your world for a few short hours and, inhabit this lyrical world - you are a lucky viewer . As for me, as the movie closes; I am always the ninth person on that soaring hill, on route to Switzerland.

This was incredibly disturbing. Largely because of how understated and non judgemental it was, the latter being a good thing as the film obviously shouldn't have to outright tell you this is a bad thing. It's about a paedophile who has a young boy locked up in his basement. There's a few clear messed up moments; the "come over here" scene, the attempted abduction of another young boy which made my skin crawl, the "your parents don't want you" letter scene being the biggest examples. For the most part it just portrayed things as is though with Michael as a from the outside seemingly normal dude, a bit odd but so are loads of perfectly fine people, we saw him go about his life. For the first 20 minutes i hadn't ruled out him not being a paedophile but instead being some sort of super lonely weirdo who wanted a son, still evil for kidnapping him but something different, that's how oddly this was portrayed. And i think that made everything so much more disturbing as it seemed like what someone like him would try to do, he attempted some sort of actual relationship with the kid, as it went on it got worse with him getting more aggressive and us being let into what was happening more. Not something i actually enjoyed but an interesting take on a fcked up subject. No idea what i think about the end i think the funeral scene may have been the best in the film knowing that these people here who loved him and are genuinely mourning for him don't have a clue. Kinda would have liked to see their reaction but then again it's not as if there was anything else to show, the reactions are easy to guess.

One of my fondest childhood memories comes from when I was nine years old in the summer of '08 and it's me and Dad going to see this movie. I'll never forget that day; it was Saturday, May 24 and Mom had a bunch of her friends in our tiny house in Martinez, Georgia. Dad said, "Why don't we go for a ride?" I said okay. He didn't tell me where we were going, but it shouldn't have been a surprise when we stopped at the theater and he told the boy behind the glass, "Two to see Indiana Jones." Dad and I used to watch the original three late at night when Mom had to work. It cost thirteen dollars for us to get in to see it, after which Dad bemoaned how expensive tickets had gotten to be. Anyway, it turned out to be one of the first movies I went to see at the time that I actually enjoyed -I'd gone to see only two others prior and one was a piece of crap- and the only movie I went to see twice, the latter instigated by Mom bemoaning the fact that we left her. For all of those reasons, I consider it a treasure I shared with my dad. It helps that I enjoy it just as much now as I did then. Indy's every bit as fun and exciting as he always was, the return of Marion Ravenwood is a welcome addition, the mysticism that was always there remains and the Raiders March, though Williams has apparently made some slight changes, is still as rousing and satisfying as ever. So, yeah, I've always liked this fourth outing and that's not about to change.

It's definitely a good film. It's just something that's difficult to rate since i can't really say i enjoyed it or would feel like seeing it again. Glad i watched it.
What do you think of the ending?
Do you think it ended at the right time or we should have saw her discover the kid? As i said i do think it was effective and there wasn't much we could see unless they added a half hour of his family dealing with it or something, but on some level i kinda wanted to see that if it was handled right. Felt that Michael was going to be caught a few times which i guess was the intention to set up that ending. Either way the funeral scene was incredible.

While I as well did crave for more once the ending came, I still think that leaving it as it is, is the smartest choice possible, especially since this is a directorial debut. At the end of the day, our imaginations filling the blanks, is more rewarding than whatever the film would come up with next, so I was pretty satisfied with it.

Dunkirk
Loooooved it. Been so excited for this movie and when I finally had it in my hand I almost couldn't handle it, a film about the Dunkirk evacuation by Christopher Nolan, what more can one ask for!. The story tells itself and Nolan just points a camera at it and that's the beauty, everyone was great in this movie, if I have any criticism is it could of been a little larger in scale.. and bodies , I once saw visual projections of the actual beach during the evacuation on a large wall in the underground tunnels of Dover castle (where operation dynamo was co-ordinated from) and it looked... bigger but that's nothing, this was a wonderful achievement. Never surrender.

In the Mouth of Madness
https://i.jeded.com/i/in-the-mouth-of-madness.27841.jpg
This movie was fantastic, Lovecraftian in every way, but let's start from somewhere.
When we are shown at the start that our main character is in a horrible situation, then we get thrown into the past in order to see how this normal, intelligent human being became (what is considered by the doctors) insane and locked up. Those are moments I cherish, so instead of surprising you by hiding where character gets in the end, they surprise you by showing you the end and letting you imagine everything in between, while throwing surprises at your fully working detective brain that is trying to solve the puzzle, small but significant change that fits this psychological sub-genre very well. Especially when Neill pulls this so perfectly, just look at him at the start, through the middle and near the end, (in)sanity shows in his eyes, it can be heard in his voice, just a great performance overall, it was even harder to be this convincing when you look at the budget and the world this movies takes place in.
Others were average at their roles well... Besides Julie Carmen, there are no bad actors expect her, she is seriously lacking here, with only few words that seem like acting, everything else is on a Spanish Soap Opera level.
Story itself is Lovecraftian to its core, beings we cannot even start to comprehend, main character going from a very stable, sane and educated person, to full blown insanity over the course of the story.
Horror is a mixed bag, it uses some classical jump-scares, but not very often, other things they manage to pull off is atmospheric horror, for example those scenes on the road, very disturbing.
One thing where it lacks is time, it would benefit from being longer in order to fully explore some other aspects of the story, it is about one hour and thirty minutes long, addition of twenty to thirty more minutes would be fantastic. Highlighting town folk, town itself, all these objects and who Sutter Cane is, why is he doing this and so on.
It needs you to stay in it, maybe even more than one watch in order to fully understand, it is an intelligent movie that will play tricks on you. Ending itself is really... Well not important, as this is not a movie about endings, if you are familiar with HP Lovecraft you are probably already aware how this one ends. This was a great experience in my book, sadly movies as this one are not big cash cows and are not made that often.
Verdict: 8.5

I never left the theater with my heart in pieces like last night. At some moments I really thought about leaving, just... leaving. I'm so sad. Star Wars is my favorite fantasy saga since I was 6 and now, now is gone. Sure, the old movies still out there, but this is part of the same universe, and that's... that's so sad...
http://starwarsblog.starwars.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/the-last-jedi-theatrical-blog.jpg
I've never felt so out of place in my life. While I wanted to cry in frustration, I was surrounded by many who applauded each sequence. Laura Dern, Adam Driver and Mark Hamill, all of them was great in they characters... and BB-8, I love that little droid but this isn't enough, it's not enough... I'm very sorry to say this, but I left the movie theater so disappointed, so frustrated, that I think I'm being a little dramatic here. Well, maybe, but I have to put this out of me. When I watched The Force Awakens, I gave it 3 out of 5. "This is just one new introduction to this rich universe", I used to say, "This is just the beginning" I wanted to believe...
For the first time in my life, It breaks my heart to be honest about a film:

A marmite film if ever I seen one. And I thought it was brilliant. I 100% recommended going in blind to this one as it really is a head trip. I had a rough idea what I was expecting it to be but it played out completely different. Jennifer Lawrence plays the part so well and although Bardem was good, there really wasn't that much for him to 'act'. The cameos were once again totally unexpected but worked brilliantly. Much more psychological than your typical horror, throughout the film I sensed vibes of Bunuel, Polanski and Kubrick, although I'll not mention what films. Its tense from start to finish with a real feel of claustrophobia and despite it not being particularly gory, there are several scenes that are pretty close to the bone, particularly the final scenes.
I loved the allegory behind it all and for me it totally worked. The only Aronofsky I haven't seen yet is Noah but as it stands this is as good as anything else he's made. Cant wait to watch it again.

Dagon (2001)

There is something about these mysterious - survival - unknown place - odd people type of movies that pulls me in. Generally this is nothing more than an average movie, I am fully aware of that, acting is decant, story is taken from someone else ( directly from H.P. Lovecraft this time) and dialog and other things they had to add in is also very... Let's say nothing special, on the surface just another simple horror movie.
But there are some key things that bring it a bit above that, atmosphere is one of those. Firstly, you are in a old looking town, phones are dead, there is only one car, your ship is a wreck and streets are looking all the same, there is barely any space for two people to run next to each other, it can be very claustrophobic at times. Constant rain and wind creates this feeling of being cut off from outside world even further, being helpless in a situation where every person wants to hunt you down.
There are some reveals but I don't wanna spoil, some are predictable, others good, few bad ones.
One of my biggest complaints is that the director lost his imagination when it comes to the structure of the scene, most of them are just "run, hide behind something and wait for the bad guys to pass" there is no tension.
As I said in my review for In the Mouth of Madness, something connected with Lovecraft can have only one ending and it is all about the road character takes until he reaches that breaking point. In this... Well, our main character actually goes from being scared, nervous and "weak", to being strong minded, willing to fight to the death, he thinks and acts, as if all of this made him mentally stronger not weaker. His girlfriend even smiles near the end, looking happily, while that might be good depending on the situation, it is not good for Lovecraftian horror or this movie in specific.
Verdict: 6.8/10

Good film. I read up a bit on Panahi's situation beforehand as i was only aware of the basics. Think this is probably more important than it impressive but it's enjoyable anyway, it's funny and Panahi comes across as the most likeable dude imaginable. He's super smiley and seems like a fun guy, loved when the small guy noticed him at he start and he kind of swayed side to side with a really genuine smile (although not really since this was scripted) both feeling awkward and appreciative that someone had noticed him, he was great with his niece too. My one problem was i thought some of the acting was off which is a bigger problem for a docufiction IMO. Kiarostami's docufictions and A Moment of Innocence feel really natural throughout and this didn't at times. Also think this was probably the worst place to start, i'd have been better starting with a few of his pre ban films then This Is Not a Film and Closed Curtain beforehand. Still i enjoyed and seriously respect it and i'm looking forward to more from him.

This was a really enjoyable and funny movie from one of the Kids in the Hall guys. Watched it because i'd heard it compared to Classic Simpsons, while i don't think it reaches the heights of the best Simpsons i get where people are coming from and had a good time. It's on Youtube and the creator: Dave Foley actually commented on the video saying "This movie is something I'm extremely proud of. I wish more people had seen it. I'm delighted that it has pleased some of you." so i think he's just happy people are watching it as it seems forgotten. I recommend it.

Great isn't it. It's hard to see what other director still working would have accomplished what Aronofsky does here.
Oh and yes to Winstead. She's mightily awesome in Fargo.

OMG, this is one of those FEEL GOOD movie. I strongly recommend to everyone. Kudos to Julia & Owen as the parents, they were fantastic.
Things I didn't like:
- Message was a little forced near the end of the movie
- Similar to when I watched 'Room', I just think that Jacob Tremblay's performance was good, but not great. Had this movie use a more talented kid, the movie would have elevated to a different level.

Prisoners really sold me on Villeneuve as a director. That one could’a been a throwaway, by-the-numbers thriller but the execution (aided in no small part by two great opposing performances) really elevated the whole affair.
Incendies is the ideal follow up if you’re looking to catch up on his filmography but it’s no less challenging.

I kind of want her to work with The Coens for real. I’ve been thinking you could revive the sort of films Billy Wilder or Howard Hawks did in the 50s with modern sensibilities and Joel & Ethan would be atop my list to do it. MEW would kill it at the vocal gymnastics they indulge in.
Greta Gerwig and Tessa Thompson could do it too.

That's the only one i've seen. Are you aware of the directors (and taxi driver in the film) story? From wiki:
Panahi was arrested in March 2010 along with his wife, daughter, and 15 friends and later charged with propaganda against the Iranian government. Despite support from filmmakers, film organizations, and human rights organizations from around the world, in December 2010 Panahi was sentenced to a six-year jail sentence and a 20-year ban on directing any movies, writing screenplays, giving any form of interview with Iranian or foreign media, or from leaving the country except for medical treatment or making the Hajj pilgrimage
He has made three films since then including one called This Is Not a Film :D Taxi won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and his daughter had to accept it for him. Taxi is his love letter to film in defiance of his ban, he also mocks his order throughout by making it a DocuFiction (something Iran is famous for) acting like he's just documenting real events while joking about it and having the little guy question if events are real or not. He even has his niece read Iran's Motion Picture Code if he wasn't being obvious enough.
So yeah it's more an important film against the restriction of art than it is impressive, although it's impressive that it was made and that Panahi is that brave. Outside of its importance i found it funny and heartwarming though, Panahi's smiley face really warmed my heart. I don't think it's a masterpiece but even ignoring it's political context i found it enjoyable.
Going to watch This Is Not a Film soon.

I liked her in Sky High (2005) and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) (I think the zero chemistry was because of Micheal Cera...just saying. I enjoyed the movie but he's not the most convincing, um, hunk type.) and I've heard she's great in Smashed (2012) which I still need to see. Yeah, I could see her in a Coen brothers film. I wish someone would see how talented she is. After Fargo maybe she'll get more big-time roles. She's got an upcoming movie called All About Nina where she plays a stand-up comedienne. I mostly like Scott Pilgrim, but I agree with this 100%. The lead actors don't have any chemistry, Ramona is kind of a bitch in the film, and I didn't even want her and Scott to end up together. Scott and Knives made more sense. Scott and Ramona are kind of insufferable, but I don't hate it because the supporting cast is really great, which manages to save the film for me.

Possibly, or it may just not be for you. I didn't love it either although i think both of us would have been better starting with some of his pre ban films to give us more context on what led to his ban and what exactly was labeled "propaganda against the Iranian government". For the record Taxi is rarely called his best film: The White Balloon, The World, Crimson Gold, This Is Not a Film and possibly Closed Curtain are usually ranked above it from what i've seen, with the first three being pre ban films. The World is critical of the treatment of women in Iran so i'm guessing that played a part in his arrest.

Roger Mortis and Doug Bigelow are cops that are chasing crooks that are dead serious about crime. Or should I say they are chasing dead crooks perpetrating serious crimes? Office Christmas Party
https://i.imgur.com/IGrOhte.png
1.5
Here is a film so desperate to be edgy, raunchy and wild, that the end result is an embarrassment of tame, unfunny and boringly predictable comedic bits. Despite the largely talented cast, they meander around the script, looking for something funny to say or do. Instead they fall into the roles everyone and their grandma would expect from them and the film offers a snicker here or there, but no memorable funny moments.
TJ Miller has to land a very big client for his company, or everyone will be fired. The best way to do this is to show the man they need to 'woo', what a close knit family the company is at the work Christmas Party. Unfortunately the party has been forbidden by his sister, Jennifer Aniston. Now with the help of his friend and co-worker Jason Bateman, they need to put on a wild and fun party without the boss knowing.
Let's run through this talented cast; T.J. Miller, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Munn, Vanessa Bayer, Courtney B. Vance, Rob Corddry, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell and Randall Park. All talented people in their own way, coming together to create such a lacking film is a little disappointing to say the least. Bateman does his usual straight-man with snide comedic quips, Miller is a buffon with a heart of gold, Aniston is mean, Corddry is perverted, Bell is awkward nice/mean and McKinnon is weird. Okay, we've seen this all before, so maybe they can make it work with such familiar material? No.
The film wants you to think it's a wild night, it's not. Having sex in bathroom stalls, setting things on fire, getting drunk and throwing stuff out the window. All things to be 'expected' when watching this film. One bit that was odd and didn't register a laugh is when a man does a 3D printing of his penis. Other bits are so lazily staged that you know what the joke will be later in the film, specifically the snow/cocaine mix-up.
Jokes fall flat, the situational comedy doesn't work and it will not be a film to watch every Christmas. The talented cast is given very little to do, but they make the material bearable. I'm still waiting for Olivia Munn to have something more to do with her career than play the same thing over and over too. Office Christmas Party is a miss this holiday season.

Prince of Darkness
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ku6SPRq8054/TMOClrSimQI/AAAAAAAAA2E/GB9QMUhrj_Q/s1600/prince_of_darkness-poster.jpg
In the Mouth of Madness was the first Carpenter movie I had watched (not including Escape from NY as I was a kid when I watched it and I need to do it again). I enjoyed it and while exploring the director online I discovered that most of his movies are different and imaginative, so here we are with what is considered one of his worst.
Prince of Darkness is nothing but a bunch of cliches and bad development. Group of people that have almost no character are grouped up in a building (in this case church) to get butchered like sheep. Obviously there are hundreds of ideas of how they could easily escape, but well... It is a silly horror movie after all. To be honest it is not even scary, not at all. It bored me to death at certain points, whenever someone texts me during a movie I usually just reply we will talk later or something of that manner, but this time I texted left and right because Prince of Darkness did not manage to pull me in, not even in the slightest.
Dialog is wooden and predictable, simply unrealistic and so is the acting, there are three actors that do well, others are either bad or not in the movie enough to show how bad they are. The premise itself is decant, what if religion is just a science we do not understand, that sounds interesting, but they never touch on it deeply, devil is a fluid, church made us wait until we are capable of understanding and that's it. There is nothing special about this one sadly and I barely made it to the end. There are other Carpenter movies I will be watching (They Live, The Thing...) and hopefully they will impress.
Verdict: 3/10

I'm going to watch it myself soon too, might watch one of his pre ban films first though.
I'm looking forward to see Your thoughts👍

Wolf Warrior II (Wu Jing, 2017) - This action packed sequel is the highest grossing film in China's box office history. Wu Jing, who also directed and co-wrote the film, returns as the heroic Leng Feng, who has been exiled to Africa after being court martial and serving jail time, has learned his girlfriend is presumed dead with a bullet seen at the same. There, he offers to help the Chinese ambassador transport a doctor who may have found a cure to a potentially fatal virus to safety as the area he is in now has become a war zone. There, Leng learns the doctor is about to die and he must take care of doc's daughter with help from his assistant. The rebel forces have teamed up with mercenaries led by Frank Grillo's "Big Daddy".
The action sequences are so much better this time around with the Russo Brothers (yes THOSE brothers) not only helping by having Grillo cast as the villain but bring the Marvel Studios stunt team led by Sam Hargrave as co-action director with Hong Kong's Jack Wong Wai-Leung with the likes of Marvel stunt doubles Aaron Toney and Heidi Moneymaker as fellow mercenaries along with former WWE superstar Oleg "Vladimir Kozlov" Prudius. The action looks like a Marvel movie only replace the superheroes with Wu Jing's Leng and two fellow Chinese ex-pats in Africa, one ex-military and the other a wannabe military officer. Even the final fight between Wu and Grillo is quite a watch but what starts it is a one-take underwater fight scene that is mindblowing to watch!

Maybe my expectation was too high, the movie didn't 'get me' emotionally as much as other previous Pixar animations after watching it for the very first time. So I did a second viewing on the very next day, my experience slightly improved.
Overall this is a very well made animation, and it seems like it would be the best animation of the year. But I feel like this is a little overrated for the time being right now.

OMG Frances McDormand is a real contender for the Best Actress next year (since I haven't seen Ladybird yet). This movie is funny, thought-provoking, and sad at the same time. It has a similar style as Fargo.
The score is simply spectacular, and the supporting cast is very strong as well, especially Sam Rockwell & Woody Harrelson.
Strongly Recommend!

Totally agree. While I love the movie, even if they'd switched it and Ravi at 2 minutes that would be to much of him. I like my sitar music in small doses. Just a small link to Ravi---in 1974 a friend and I went to see George Harrison and Ravi Shankar and get this---they alternated songs so the whole concert was mixed with good George music and...Ravi's looonnnngggg songs. We left before the concert was over. Can't believe I left a George Harrison concert, but there it is. Anyway, back on subject, the movie and music was fine but I wish every artist had more songs in the movie. It seemed like it was evenly split between the artists and the people in and around the concert grounds doing their art. I really liked Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and especially Otis Redding. What a performance! There's a DVD boxed-set with extra performance time, and I believe Hendrix's entire concert. I'd get it just for that.

On one hand much better than the prequels, on the other hand about an hour of the film is pointless detritus. Kylo Ren is right and the rebellion is wrong and they wasted Luke Skywalker. Also they pretty much destroyed the franchise. I'll give Rian Johnson credit though it's takes a skilled hand to ruin the Original trilogy and A New Hope and make a decent entertaining but also terrible film.

If memory serves I actually watched this at the cinema and was slightly disappointed as I love Mackenzie Crook mainly because 'the office' is pure comedy gold. Colm Meaney was actually really good too as the suicidal chap, Mackenzie was awful i think Gareth in the office will always be his greatest achievement. The plot is actually quite fresh, as a London underground driver if you kill three people in a month you get a massive pay off he has two and he wants to make Colm his third. I probably liked it more than i should of because of the actors and the London setting, the ending was a bit ridiculous. 3
SPOILER
The ending Mackenzie goes through with killing the suicidal chap even though there is no pay off basically because he wants to die, he writes some sort of book about it and hooks back up with the daughter of the main he killed who i think knows that he killed him and looks really happy about it.

Maleficent (Robert Stromberg, 2014) 3.5
A proper fairy tale
 It never went over the top, which to me was such a nice change. Great film.
It's interesting how perspectives differ. I liked Spotlight but i felt largely the same as Cobpyth did:
#126 - Spotlight (2015) ~ December 8
This is a very decent film that portrays the procedure of developping a good story excellently. At the same time, this film is also a bit of a missed chance, in my opinion. With this highly controversial subject matter, there was also the option of telling this important story more passionately, more shockingly and more head-on. I'm all for subtlety, but even in a film that focuses on the storytellers instead of the victims, there should at least be one scene where the audience truly gets disturbed. There are a couple of moments that almost get close (at least for me), but we never quite get that scene. Both the enemy and the consequences ultimately didn't get their appropriate and necessary place in this film.
Besides all that, this does remain a very smart film about journalism. I just wished they'd also offered a more human perspective on the problematic news that's being reported.
The part in bold particularly. I certainly didn't want it to be over the top but i think it was so understated that the subject matter became i dunno...slight. Obviously it was largely about the journalists but as Cob says i think it would have been improved with a few more scenes with the people affected by the events.
Overall i think it's a fine film but i don't think it's great and i don't agree that it's one of the few deserving modern Best Picture winners.

It just had that one stupid scene with Mark Ruffalo getting angry about the story not running that felt like it was entirely removed from the tone of the film.

I actually liked it. He was just really angry for the kids who had been fiddled with, AND screwed by lawyers and the media and Canon. At the end I just sat there feeling jubilant for the win and really sad for the men, then I got hit by old catholic guilt from long ago when I felt happy Canon died two days ago.
I really liked this movie. I like films that make me think. Really liked Cob's review as well - I actually pondered that while watching it and wondered what people thought of that aspect.
That Ruffalo scene was one of the better ones in the film. It's often good when a film doesn't stick to one tone throughout.

Good review, CR.
It's towards the end where Schriever tells them they have to sign off as is because the catholic church will crucify them and Ruffalo starts yelling at them then waltzs off. Very emotional and for me, the best acting I've seen from him.

I didnt realise he was acting on screen back then.
Whittaker ws excellent nd so believable for me, and as much as I dont like stewart, she was really good. Looks like a young Michael Pitt twin. Bauchau's scene is still enough to make me rather nauseous.
I was pretty surprised to find out Leto was 45. He was Fight Club too.
Based off Panic Room I once posted a 2003 recast of Taxi Driver with Stewart as Iris (and Joaquin as Travis).

Eh which chracter in Fight Club?
45 in Panic Room or 45 now? Either way he's a pretty young looking 45 year old. I wonder if he was the same sort of person back then - staying in character and doing bizarre things on set. I'm not sure Jodie would put up with that.

Liked the concept, the world-building, the music, and the dialogue between the two leads, but the editing and the breakneck pace really hurt it. It felt like 75% of this film is just action scenes. By the third act, I was exhausted. Still, what I liked I really liked, Edgerton and Smith have great chemistry and I really want to see these characters and this world in a better-told story.

The Killing (Stanley Kubrick, 1956)
The Killing is Stanley Kubrick's first big budget film with established stars and considered a must see from his film canon. It currently has a high rating of 8.0 on IMDB and rates 97% fresh on RottenTomatoes.
I'd seen this film before when I first got into film noir, I revisited it last night after watching several other noirs. I have to say I found The Killing to be mediocre at best. The dialogue spoken between the actors in the first act when the crime is being set up, has to be some of the dullest, most repetitive lines of drivel I've heard actors say...Add to that some very uninspired acting, by actors who I damn well know can act up a storm, and I have to say this film is not all that it's cracked up to be.
Just a week ago I watched John Huston's 1950 film noir The Asphalt Jungle, a film that The Killing (1956) strongly resembles.
Both films are about an audacious, brilliantly planned robbery that will net millions to the criminals. Both films go into detail about how the robbery will be done, and both have unexpected circumstances foiling the plans of the would be thieves. Hell both films even have Sterling Hayden as the lead bad guy.
The difference is The Asphalt Jungle felt alive with dynamic characters and dialogue that crackled and popped like a Saturday Night Special. Kubrick's film on the other hand is as flat as a man gunned down by the cops.
If it wasn't for Kubrick's name being attached to The Killing, I doubt this noir would ever get much mention. Kubrick would go on to greatness with his very next movie Paths of Glory (1957)

Good luck with that, I guess. Even its deliberate attempts at being funny are so dire that it sours the mood pretty severely so that even when it starts getting into serious/campy territory it's just a slog more than anything. Supposedly a lot changed over the course of the production, but it does feel like this might've been more enjoyable (deliberately or otherwise) in a different filmmaker's hands.

I do have to wonder how much of it is just its own badness and how much of it was people having greater expectations about Trevorrow's work because of both Jurassic World and Episode IX. In any case, it's pretty much if someone made an edgy parody of kid-genius movies but played it completely straight, resulting in a movie that is a tonal and narrative mess. A big part of why I watched it was so that I could watch Folding Ideas' video essay about it a.k.a. the guy who delivered this masterful video essay about Suicide Squad last year:

Worth watching out for imo
Spartacus (Stanley Kubrick, 1960)
This is one of my dad's favourite films and I watched it many times as a kid but this is the first time I watch it in years.
Kubrick did not have full control on this and he had to deal with huge egos from too many people involved so it's not a 100% Kubrick film, and it shows. Even so, it's not every director who tackles such an enormous story like the one from Spartacus in a 3+ hour film and makes it interesting! The pacing is absolutely perfect and there are some really great moments, especially in the final act.
Besides that, it's the film that made him go live in the UK and start a series of 8 masterpieces that would probably be impossible if he kept working in Hollywood.
