If you haven't seen "Harry and Tonto" or "Umberto D" you should!
Cried myself blind when Umberto lost his little dog. Terrific movie.
With which part and why?
I just think the parts before the fight are truly great. the film imbues itself a strong sense of passion and fury and in my opinion dosent overdevelop the evilness of the antagonist. For example although lots of dialogue is focused on him the film keeps the amount of scenes with him in them quite limited. not to mention I just really enjoy the dialogue and the way it was written which is probably key for the divide between our opinions.

Witness for the Prosecution (1957) 4.5 a Billy Wilder movie I have seriously needed to see from the 50s Countdown List. Charles Laughton, Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich top the excellent cast.
And NOW I know the movie that Mel Brooks spoofs in Blazing Saddles near the end with Madeline Kahn is singing with a group of soldiers.
Anyways, a great movie that would've scored high on my list.

How? Link your words to scenes? Otherwise it's just a mess of vague words that don't mean much.

Thief of Hearts (1984) - First time watching this movie, I wasn't expecting an oscar caliber film, but I enjoyed it for the most part. Steven Bauer (Scarface) played a cat burglar who breaks into a rich couple's house and steals the wife's diaries, (Barbara Williams) and he reads about her thoughts and fantasies and uses that knowledge to seduce her. She happens to be in a marriage where she doesn't get enough attention from her husband (John Getz). I found that interesting and the build up to their affair kept my interest in the film. I love 80s music and Harold Faltermeyer's score is very upbeat 80s. I give this 6/10. I know Bauer from Scarface of course and Getz from The Fly, I've never seen Barbara Williams but she did good here. I think it could have been better especially towards the end, but it's a sexy thriller in my opinion.
Down to Earth - Casa de lava (Pedro Costa, 1994) 4 - With this I just started digging into Pedro Costa's filmography and this was a very worthy first attempt, that I appreciate for its distinct approach to costumbrism, with cryptic dialogues and a focus on folklore and popular imaginary. Very enjoyable.
Once upon a time there was a singing blackbird - Iko skashvi mgalobeli (Otar Iosseliani, 1970) 3 - The title is way more sophisticated than the movie itself, which is a rather simple story of a young man who always gets late and flirts a lot and... yeah, that's it. A little movie that doesn't seem interested on pushing further and that as such makes a nice yet absolutely forgettable experience.
In Vanda's room - No quarto da Vanda (Pedro Costa, 2001) 3.5- 170 minutes of observing bits of routine in a marginal environment, of people talking about their crushed expectations in life, their childhood, their acceptance of suffering or their future plans while they dope up in whatever ways they can. While uneventful and in many instances boring, I can't help but like and be glad I watched this film. If I had to describe it in some way, it would be as a long distance run to reach a goal that is worth the whole effort, and makes up for the harshness of the journey because the message and overall feeling I get from the experience is great. In that sense, it is more rewarding than enjoyable. But it delivers well at this, and is more permeating and significant in retrospect.

One Hour Photo
https://i.imgur.com/TiiWUkx.png
One hour photo; referring to the time it usually takes for the photo developer Sy Parrish to get his customers' pictures printed.
Nowadays in the digital age, people rarely need to go to a photo developer. They still exist of course, but are not as popular as they used to be. Even at this time however, digital was starting to take its place. Bad news for Sy, as the slightest suggestion that the family he often develops photos for might go digital frightens him...
This movie completely blew me away. Robin Williams plays a character so nerve-wreckingly creepy, strange and pitiful that he gets under your skin so much he becomes real. That's some of my favorite kind of characters, where they feel so real that they almost start existing. I have no words for how layered his performance was. It would be so easy to just make a character straight-up creepy only, but the fact that you want to root for him even though you're worried at the same time he'll finally snap speaks volumes for how much he embraces this character. Sy is not a bad person, but he's still dangerous. He's compassionate, but also oddly disconnective. The Yorkin family (well, Nina and Jakob at least) like him, but they are not aware of just how much Sy really loves them, not only as customers, but like they were his own family members. The only times they get an idea of that is when he "jokily" refers to himself as Uncle Sy. When he does start to get a little too close to them, director/writer of this movie conveys it so subtly how they are pleased to see him, but at the same time they know something isn't quite right. Will Yorkin notices something odd about him right away, but doesn't think too much of him outside of just a "stranger". This is the core of the movie, the struggle of Sy trying to get something he can't have. It's almost immediately obvious he's close to them, but it's not enough. He wants to be more than just a nice familiar face. We as the audience know how easily he can break loose of any logical thought and restraint, which he does throughout but it happens so slowly and methodically we feel constant shivers long before the movie is over.
Gary Cole is also good and kinda funny as his frustrated boss Bill Owens. All of the performances range from good to excellent, but if it wasn't for Williams the movie wouldn't have as much meaning as it does. It makes you think about how dangerous loneliness can be, how important support from family or friends is. We don't want to end up like Sy, but we strongly pity people who turn out that way.
I was gonna rate this a 4.5, but this movie resonated with me so to such a point and made me think so much about it almost restlessly it's actually a full 5. Movies full of emotional torment are not the kind I like to rewatch too soon, but I'll always cherish and respect it fondly. It's possibly the most personal Williams has ever gotten.

Awful.
I thought the version made in 2005 was really bad. Today I've changed my mind.
I've written extensively about this movie, so don't want to repeat it all... I'll just say this: it's not a totally terrible film in and of itself (meaning, if you took a 10-year-old who never read a comic book to see an action flick about completely never-before-seen super-powered characters, they might enjoy it: like with the movies Sky-High or Zoom).
But as a film about the iconic 56-year-old super-team family group of cosmic adventurers known as THE Fantastic Four - this was the height of blasphemy! (And I thought what they did to Dr. Doom in the earlier series was bad! I had no idea how low anyone could actually go in regards to bastardizing a character.)

I don't really get what is supposed to be so great about this either. It's #4 on the best british films list. Guess it's that Hitchcock was such an important and great director and his best work was clearly in Hollywood so his British films were overrated by critics, or it's really great and i'm missing something. Who knows, i found it overall enjoyable but really exhausting to watch.

Curious that Brief Encounter is above Lawrence of Arabia too. I'm guessing the fact that Lawrence is a co-american production played into that.

BFI did the Sight and Sound list too. I think that list is pretty great for expanding your horizons, IMDB 250>AFI 100>Sight and Sound 250 is a good way to go as a movie fan IMO, then by that point you know where to go and what you like. According to wiki:
In 1999 the British Film Institute surveyed 1,000 people from the world of British film and television to produce the BFI 100 list of the greatest British films of the 20th century. Voters were asked to choose up to 100 films that were 'culturally British'.
I've seen 136/250 of the Sight and Sound list. Here's the list if you have Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/garrincha89/list/sight-and-sound-2012-critics-top-250-films/

Yea I agree. I felt the scary parts had too much of a reliance on jump scares and also felt similar to the Conjuring/insidious type movies we are getting, especially in the “haunted house”. The first scene though, the drain scene is chilling and near perfect. Overall though, something was a bit rushed about the movie, probably because I’ve read the book. So I didn’t give it such a high rating.

I Couldn't agree more, Ed. "Prosecution" is one of a group of movies that I never tire of re-watching. Laughton was usually brilliant in most of his roles, and in this one he was flawless. He reportedly was all over this production, helping the other actors, personally reading his part during their dialogues, etc. The story was compelling, and immediately draws in the viewer.
The rest of the cast was first rate: Elsa Lanchester, Deitrich, and even a wonderful cameo by Una O'Connor. Power did an excellent job, but I always felt that he was limited as an actor.
In my view it should have won Oscars for best picture and best actor for 1957. However it was up against some stiff competition from Bridge Over the River Kwai ("Kwai" and Alec Guiness won those 2, plus David Lean for direction), Sayonara, 12 Angry Men, and Peyton Place.
Today there's no question that a sequel would have been made, don't you agree?..;)

Hud (1963).
More a play than a film, Hud Bannon is an unsympathetic character but Paul Newman plays the part to a tee. To the extent where I wan't Huds principles more than his fathers. Patricia Neal deserves a mention as her performance cutting and thrusting with Newman is a joy.
4/5.

absolutely, there would have been quite the franchise with Laughton and Lanchester running the gambit as lawyer and his trusted nurse/aid.
There were quite a few great cameos as I watched this and, like you, I'll be watching again and again.
And yes, that IS some serious competition for the Oscars that year.
A small little bit of trivia I found kind of amusing was that, with this being an Agatha Christie story, that Elsa Lanchester would, later on, play Agatha Christie's female detective in the spoof comedy "Murder By Death" - I gues that would be considered by today's standards as an Easter Egg. lol

Watched Paterson last night (inspired by the samoan lawyer), and really liked it a lot. The whole film is an ode to the poetry of the ordinary and the unquenchable human thirst for self-expression and creativity. Jarmusch opens a window into a creative mind that processes everyday events into poetic imagery, and, as the film goes on and more nuances and details are added to the mosaic of Paterson's daily routines (seemingly the same but not quite the same, really), we find that the dull repetitive "Groundhog Day-like" reality reveals more and more of its beauty once sifted through his peaceful, all-accepting vision. Adam Driver delivers a quietly understated performance in his portrayal of a “not of this world” person who prefers to take a passive contemplative position toward the world, rather than act decisively to pursue life goals. He is a bus driver and at the same time, metaphorically, the spiritual soul of Paterson NJ - wandering the city almost like a ghost, writing its chronicles.
Excellent film.

I'm glad You share my opinion:)
In Streetcar he supose to be a Neanderthal. Stanley Kowalski is brutal and common character in the play and Brando played perfectly in the movie.
In Sayonara he should be more gentle - he played there a lover. But he was in this movie like someone who is coming in to a house in bemire shoes and leaving mud on expensive carpets, I You know what I mean.

A couple of my real life friends (including weeman) have started watching it recently too. One of them has already told me that it might be the best TV show he has ever seen, and commented on the fact that the thing he finds the funniest are the oddball characters he comes across.
I posted about it in the TV thread and sure I mentioned you too. Watch it the day after it aired. Amazing is an understatement. Not his most laugh out loud funny episode but by far the best. Wow. I have mentions turned off so i missed it. Awesome i said the exact same thing: best episode of tv i've seen. Well it's more like a movie so it was my #1 of 2017. Like you i don't think it was the funniest, that would be the one where they make The Web for me but it was so sad and just amazing storytelling. No doubt it was hilarious too, Ding Dong Daddy killed me; actually just the idea of Bill infiltrating that place with rehearsed lines was amazing. And the rehearsal for meeting Frances "I'm here to marry your wife!" :D. All of it was unreal and yes very sad. There was a thing going around when Nathan was in the bar with Bill in closed captions it came up "I'm just a sad guy who doesn't want to still be doing the same show after five years" Nathan didn't say that in the scen, some think it was dialogue that was cut at the last minute and some think it was a clue that the show is ending. Hope it's not the latter but if it is he couldn't possibly make a better finale than that.
So cool that weeman and your other friends are into, haven't been able to get any of mine into it so far think the premise turns them off and it's not the best show for short clips. It's a top ten show for me easy and my favourite airing one.

Yeah, and when he was pretending to make Mud 2 and he was making them reading the script about there being "so much mud" I was crying with laughter. Amazing.
Yeah I agree, I want more and more, but the creativity and ambition of the show makes it seem impossible to top and sustain, even though Nathan has proved that wrong so far.
Yeah I've been trying to get Luke (weeman) into it for a few weeks now. Me, him and our mate went for a drink the other night and he started talking about how he had started watching the show, not knowing that I had seen it all. I was so happy.

The movie nails the most essential thing, the characters. They were all incredibly well realized and seeing them together was a feast. The action was fantastic as it should, and the writing, while inconsistent, is a vast improvement over the worst of the DCEU. While I would say that the good definitely outweighs the bad and I would recommend it, the film still shows signs of some of the Extended Universe worst problems. While not as prominent in Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad, the plot is still messy, the narrative can have some bad structure, and the pacing is wildly inconsistent. Also, worst villain in the entire DCEU.

Another piece of style-over-substance, eye-popping, visual-candy extravaganza from Luc Besson - who, frankly, I'm not a very big fan of.
The visual aspect was very impressive, and some of the action was fun but unfortunately that's where the good things end. Aside from the utterly vacuous, cliche-ridden mess of a story and unfunny dialogue, there was a glaring lack of interesting, charismatic characters - the two lead ones were just bland (no chemistry whatsoever).
Overall, not totally worthless but not the best way to spend 137 minutes of your life, either.

Loved the battle, couldn't care less about everything else. To me it was: a half hour shallow misery fest to get us to hate the main villain, followed by 20 minutes of dull talking scenes then a half hour of a lifeless journey with bad humour and absolutely no tension in the scenes that were supposed to be tense, then 40 minutes of a great battle. Starting to think Miike isn't for me, or at least that i'll never like all of one of his films.

Sorry to hear you didn't liked Camo. I found it a solid remake. But the original is so much better. Eiichi Kudô camework is God's level for a 1963 movie. As a traditional jidaigeki the film is more about the oppression of the weak by those in authority, a very commom thing during the The Tokugawa Shogunate. The original was the first film of the "Samurai Revolution Trilogy" by Eiichi Kudô. 13 Assassins It's not my favorite of the trilogy but i really like this film. Can I recommend you some Takashi Miike films? This remake (and the Harakiri remake too) are commercial works that he had done. Allow me to recommend some of his original/autoral works:
Ichi: The Killer (based on manga)

I watched this before and still feel the same way. My wife saw someone on a morning show promoting Golden Shower so she told me to put it on the watchlist. I figured she should see the first one. I just think it's very entertaining, better than most of the action blockbusters that come out. I like the cast, and I was never a Colin Firth fan before, but now I am. The blade runner villain girl is very hot, and I liked Sammy Jackson as well. Some good humor and a few nice soundtrack choices top it off. I'm expecting to not like the sequel as much.

A couple on vacation in Spain go to an island where the children are killing off all the adults. I've always been creeped out by evil kids, and the kids in this movie were no exception. Besides being creepy, it's a bit unsettling and has a great ending. The beginning during the opening credits seemed out of place to me, showing documentary type footage of kids suffering during wars and other horrible events. It was also hard for me not to be bothered by the couple's constant stupidity. Worst of all, the movie is ridiculously slow.

Shame you didn't like it more but not entirely surprised tbh.

Agree with this, I think it's there to try and raise the consciousness of the normal view of children as innocents but it's unnecessary and goes on far too long anyway imo.
It was also hard for me not to be bothered by the couple's constant stupidity.

Worst of all, the movie is ridiculously slow.

Overall i'd say this was entertaining, it also completely did my head in at times. I hated the main character (actually most of the characters), the decisions she was making, the rich kids buying a good life, etc. Understand that it's difficult avoiding those things in a film with this story but in that case i'd need the characters to be alot more compelling than they were to love it. It did do things well, the exams were alot more tense than they had any right being turning a cheating on exams story into a heist movie shouldn't have worked this well, it was funny at times and i liked Bank.

Despite only making two movies, Duke Mitchell is my new favorite trashy cinema auteur. Massacre Mafia Style (1974) (Also released as Like Father, Like Son and The Executioner) is one of the most trashy, racist, sexist, poorly taste movies I have ever seen, and I love it. "The Godfather is a piece of **** (http://www.comingsoon.net/horror/news/745271-the-godfather-is-a-piece-of-sht-duke-mitchell-and-massacre-mafia-style)" is what Mitchell used to say, and if that wasn't on the nose enough for you, just wait to hear the 5 minute monologue of him ripping apart The Godfather towards the end of the movie. Out of all the reading I've done connected with this movie, I never really understood Mitchell's beef with The Godfather. The article linked above suggests that Mitchell saw The Godfather as inauthentic, but from the start, Mitchell's Massacre Mafia Style is obviously not grounded in reality. The characters kill in broad daylight with reckless abandon and with zero consequence. Though the most wacky parts of the movie are allegedly based on true events. In one scene, Mitchell electrocutes a wheelchair bound man in a urinal, something Mitchell (a former lounge crooner) did to a stage manager he didn't like. The other, a pimp that Mitchell's character crucifies on Easter Sunday, is also based off a true incident that happened in Vegas in the 60s.
https://www.straight.com/files/v3/styles/gs_standard/public/images/15/03/massacre_mafia_style_3.jpg?itok=1JjlMNUY
But for a movie that hates The Godfather, there's alot of Godfather-esque stuff in it. Complicated father/son relationships, a (now obligatory) baptismal scene, and montage after montage of bloody gangland assassinations. But Massacre Mafia Style does one thing The Godfather didn't: it used the term "Mafia" and "Cosa Nostra". The Godfather was famously barred from using those two terms by the Mafia, with producers receiving threatening messages from founder of the Italian-American Civil Rights League and Colombo Crime Family boss Joe Colombo (Massacre Mafia Style also features a Colombo-esque character, who similar to Colombo, was assassinated during an Italian Civil Rights speech in 1971).
Mitchell, who starred, wrote, and directed Massacre, obviously didn't have any permits to film, so it's humorous to see the ways he steals some of his shots (especially a kidnapping during a church mass). What saves the movie for me is the low budget, 70s sleeze. I think if this film was set than anytime during that decade, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. I can't wait to see Mitchell's follow up, Gone With the Pope (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gone_with_the_Pope)(1976/2010), which was finished filming in 1976, but wasn't released to anyone until film editor Bob Murawski (Army of Darkness, Spider-Man) found the film in (the now deceased) Mitchell's garage and was able put together a cut in 2010. The movie stars Mitchell again and is about kidnapping the Pope, and holding him hostage until every Catholic in the world pays a $1 ransom for him.

I've watched part of it and noticed the Carrey quote "they didn't want to release the footage because they thought it would paint me in a bad light".
It feels like to me that the movie was designed on purpose to make Carrey look really bad, and by the way he presents it, he wanted it that way. For example, there were moments that indicated that he loosened up, or entertained people on the set, but it feels like instead of extending those scenes they cut away from them.
I could be mistaken, but that is what it felt like.

The Face of Another (1966)
Directed by Teshigahara, The Face of Another doesn't quite hit the heights that Woman Of The Dunes did for me but this is still a really impressive film. More psychological horror than sci-fi, its like a paranoid character study, with an equally unsettling subplot running along side it.

Oasis: Supersonic (2016)
This was both uplifting yet utterly depressing on a personal level at the same time. So much talent and energy with such incredible music. Yet knowing that my time growing up listening to Oasis is over totally destroyed me. I had such incredible times with Oasis in the background and watching this definitely brought those memories back. I wasn't even the biggest fan (Stone Roses were much better) so that probably is an indication of how good this doc was.

Very good coming of age and coming out film. Obviously it wasn't very relateable for me being a straight white guy, it was very clearly personal with Dee Rees herself being a black lesbian though and that came through. Plus it was relateable in the sense that all coming of age films are once you've went through your childhood/teenage years. At first Lee and Binna's relationship didn't feel natural as it went on it got to me though. Think it started off pretty typically with the moody one not being willing to give it a try then when she lets her guard down she realizes that she enjoys her company; once we bypassed that and it was focusing on them getting closer it worked a bunch though and while the conclusion to their relationship was easy to see it was still heartbreaking. Adepero Oduye was great, more than anything she sold the little moments, the sort of things that are in loads of films dilluting their effectiveness but she did such a good job that they ended up more powerful than they should have been. Laura shunning her for instance and her rejecting Binna's first advance. That was my favourite thing the portrayal of her difficulty to embrace her sexuality. Thing is this isn't set in the 1960's, it's the 21st Century absolutely not trying to minimize the difficulties LGBT people face because it's still there just saying that she has more opportunity than she would have even 20 years ago. Of course her mother doesn't approve of it but she does have other opportunities to explore it like the aforementioned Binna encounter and the visits to clubs, that's what i love most while homophobia is depicted that isn't the only obstacle here it's a personal struggle she faces to accept it herself which i think is often overlooked; she has to deal with her own battles with it on top of the way she is treated and judged. Liked the performances of the actors that played the mother and father too, the mother was dislikeable but understandable, she had to face it alot more directly than the dad since he wasn't around that much and he usually spent his time having fun with Lee rather than enforcing discipline which mostly fell on the mother. Thought them dealing with her sexuality was very well done too, although i'm not really sure their personal problems and the fathers obvious affair was that well done it felt underdeveloped. Wasn't sure about the rating until the ending which was excellent i thought got me to give it another +. Those last twenty minutes packed in so many different emotions.
Loved the visuals; could see people being annoyed by them with the closeups and weaving about, i think it worked very well in inserting you into everything plus the greens, purples, pinks, etc. Plus New York at night is one of the most filmable locations. Great soundtrack too, i like that Lee and Binna bonded over music it went well with the songs used to depict Lee's mood before they met. Very good film. Think i liked it a little more than Moonlight which it's obviously going to be compared to, although they are both their own thing.

The Persian language arthouse vampire movie that somehow manages to out-Jarmusch Jim Jarmusch.
A few parts drag a little, but overall this was pretty great. I especially liked the part where the girl and Arash meet and she takes him home and plays White Lies' Death. The soundtrack was good in general and it looks stunning.

KRULL (1983)
director: Peter Yates

Krull is just a good fantasy. Boy, does it take its time, too. It's 2 hours long. I think the perfect time to watch it is before bed, in installments. It's just not a movie to be on the edge of your seat for. It's silly and yes, it's even a bit dated, but the committed James Horner score hardly rips off John Williams at all (fingers crossed behind back). Honestly, though - it's a damn fine score.
This is a huge, epic, feel good yet tries to be suspenseful-film. I enjoyed the dialog. There's nothing brilliant about it, it's just there...existing. What I did like about the acting and dialog was that, for the most part, it wasn't offensive. I didn't find myself cringing. Big points for that!

https://i.imgur.com/FGbPqdX.jpg?1
This is just a super-chill flick you can enjoy as a sci fi fantasy. True, Krull rips off Star Wars to a degree, but for me, it's forgivable because I simply don't care. It's not Star Wars. It's KRULL, and it is different enough. But damn, there are some serious parallels.
Everything seems to be handled very competently; the special effects (great blue and red lasers), the score (as mentioned - and James Horner pulls out a lot of stops for this particular film, even going so far as to use some chord progressions in folk songs known throughout ages of humankind), the acting is down to earth enough to establish camaraderie between the cast, and the story, though derivative, has a beginning, middle and an ending.

Hey, what else do you need for a 1983 science fiction fable?
I think Krull is one my new favorite fantasy films based on its ability to remain calm and not disgust me, and the aesthetics of color within the film. It really does look beautiful.

Mildly entertaining at times but full of borrowed movie tropes as one would expect,,., I mainly enjoy these films for the aesthetics for the action but I wasn't that impressed by any of the action scenes on display here,, also could have done with more motivation for Keaton's vulture guy than we are the little guys and I have to protect my family. sometimes I found Spider Man an annoying teenager who won't shut up, idk it might be cool to see Spidey in the next Avengers but this one didn't do a whole hell of a heap for me.

Only my second Leigh film i liked it. I did have trouble accepting both Aubrey and Nicola as they were ridiculously over the top, i could get over Aubrey but Nicola had the biggest emotional story in the film so it did hurt my enjoyment a bit. They were all over the top, i came to love and accept the others much more than those two though. I understand why she acted that way but it was still annoying, it was like an exaggerated version of the very worst of Eastenders. It was still enjoyable, funny and i really liked the script.

Worst of all, the movie is ridiculously slow.[/QUOTE]

This felt a lot closer to Teshigahara's Woman Of The Dunes so naturally I enjoyed this slightly more that The Face of Another. Its fairly bleak from start to finish and despite slow pacing at times, its tense the whole way through. The fact this is the directors debut takes it onto another level. Superb.

This would have been a major favourite of mine if i had seen it at the right age, i know it. Like The Breakfast Club; i adore that film but i don't think it would work for me anywhere near as much as it does if i watched it for the first time now. Now i think i'm at that age that some of the goofiness and silliness of something like this gets to me, the scenes of his show were fantastic but some of the other drama wasn't for me. Teenage rebellion comes across pretty corny and awkward to me now, the entertainment and some touching scenes were what mostly worked for me, would also say it's pretty quotable. I don't really think Slater is a good actor, he has loads of personality though even if he does ape Nicholson a tonne. I love him in this, Heathers and Mr Robot; he's just likeable in his energy and goofy charisma. The one thing against him here is funnily enough that i can't buy him as a shy person; i can accept that a shy person could transform under anonymity but they'd have to be that way inclined and it's not in Slater's nature. As Harry he was great though. Definitely a cheesy film but it was enjoyable.

This was pretty solid, not a favourite though. I'd say i like it a bit more than 2046 but my top three are significantly higher, need to see Fallen Angels again to know what i think. Good performances and i loved the cinematography. Wasn't able to connect with the relationship much which was obviously a problem in a film about a troubled relationship. For me it was like watching Before Midnight without having seen Sunrise or Sunset; getting dropped into a relationship that is in trouble without having been given a reason to feel anything about it. Guess that's not what it was about but some scenes showing them happy together (not a pun i swear haha) would have improved this for me. Think it's definitely a good portrayal of a very destructive relationship but i wasn't that invested in it.

Simple yet very solid. An interesting twist on a coming of age film since normally they are about finding your identity something that is basically impossible for Michael seeing as he has to reinvent himself constantly. As noted in the film he was understandably distant, guarded and wouldn't commit to anything. It's interesting watching him try to grapple with all of this and the family despite their crimes are completely sympathetic and great with him making it seem like an actual tough choice between his family and his own life. River Phoenix was very good, personally i'd say Christine Lahti was just as good as him. The romance worked alot more than i thought it would too, there was some very touching moments the dance/party scene in particular. Good film.

A look inside the mind of someone who disappeared to become someone else. The lengths actors go for certain roles can sometimes be damaging to the body. Look at what Christian Bale does routinely for the roles he takes on. Here, Jim Carrey does something similar, yet it's not his body that's changing, it's his complete persona.
Jim & Andy was shot on the set of Man on the Moon and showed the lengths Carrey went to to become Andy Kaufman. He was so engrossed in the persona that Andy Kaufman and Jim Carrey had different trailers on set. Here's the thing about that though; Jim Carrey was never on set, it was always Andy Kaufman. So that trailer was never used. Watching the film, which is footage from the set and a one on one interview with a bearded and clearly depressed Jim Carrey. He talks about not being you and what does it mean to be someone. Deep thought provoking stuff in his mind, maybe some random mumblings of an old man to others.
Like Carrey or not...this is interesting stuff. Family members of Andy came on set and felt like they were talking to Andy one last time. The difficulties that "Andy" put people through on set I can only imagine. Kaufman was a prankster and Carrey does this on set throughout the film. Things go even further when Carrey becomes Tony Clifton. Now we have Carrey, being Kaufman who is also being Clifton. Three separate people in his mind.
In no way did I ever think this has to do with Carrey's ego. I feel like he put a lot on the line to become Andy off screen, to the point of damage to his personal mental well being. Did the stuff he did with Jerry Lawler go a bit too far? Probably. Life imitated art in that section. Would I have liked to have seen more people on the documentary give their insight? Of course, what did others think of his 'becoming Andy' on set? Who knows, this film is only about Jim and Andy.

I watched both these films with my girlfriend since we wouldn't be able to see each other on Thanksgiving. Both of us really only wanted to see Coco, but we went ahead and saw another as well. The plan was to see Murder on the Orient Express, but even though it was advertised on the website, it wasn't actually playing on the theater, so, we saw "Wonder," which was probably a better film anyways.
I love Pixar when its doing inspired animated fare and I think Coco is a feather in their cap, I liked it quite a bit.
Wonder was good too! Although it played out in a similar way as many "tear-jerk" dramas, it also had a charm and humor that allowed it to reach beyond that.
FUN FACT: My girlfriend, who cried from Beauty and the Beast ,B]Logan[/B], Rogue One, and now, Coco, did not cry while watching Wonder. Blew my mind!

I can see that. Parts just appeared like he kept pushing, due to having the "I'm Andy" blank check. It seemed that he embellished at times when he could have turned it down.
Either way, it really seemed to have a major effect on his life.

This was absolutely everything i expected to hate it for: corny, overly sentimental, manipulative, features big meanies who have no reason to be big meanies like the high school teacher at the start who literally crushed dream(er)s with his speech, that or they just don't believe in the little guy. I have absolutely nothing to complain about though, it worked for what it is it manipulated me into caring somewhat and to be fair it's seen as an inspirational American classic for a reason; it pulls off its corny BS really well. I mean looking at the cast this could have easily have become a forgotten direct to video film if there was nothing there, Ned Beatty at the time was the biggest name and despite being talented he's never exactly been a big draw for the general public, Sean Astin is the lead and this was his first adult role; he was known as the kid from The Goonies at this time just think of all the awful/unnoticed child star to adult transitions there's been; they're always some film similar to this as well which makes it more amazing that this stuck with the public. What i think worked was the filmmaker's did something very obvious: got someone who looked like he'd never be able to make it as a Football player and made him a Football player, to be fair to Astin he did a great job pulling off his silly 'dreamer that's never gonna make it' role. Another thing was that they withheld football from us for the majority of the film, most of it is him going to Holy Cross trying to get his grades up to get into Notre Dame. They made his dream meaningful in the corniest way possible and it worked. I honestly think i greatly respect this film for doing something that i'm extremely annoyed by that well that even though i didn't love it i also didn't hate it, and this was without avoiding any of the cliches; it was just as embarrassing as plenty of other similar films i hate. Most films like this illicit a mixture of laughter and annoyance from me this i definitely laughed at but for the most part it avoided the annoyance which is a big achievment for a film like this that i didn't watch as a child. Saying that i definitely would have loved this as a child, it would have been one of those films that i'd be terrified of revisiting in case of destroying my childhood memories with an adult eye.
So yeah i can't rate this very high because i did think it was pretty horrible but i totally get the love for it anyway. For the record the janitor was the best character, love how he withheld his background until the exact perfect moment

Max Von Sydow and Harriet Andersson were fantastic especially the latter, i'd still say Gena Rowlands gave the best portrayal of mental illness i've seen but this came close.

Ehhhh, this movie was just okay imo. I only watched it because it was one of the very few Jack movies I hadn't seen. I heard the original (1946) is a whole lot better, and I don't doubt it. It was compelling at times, but for the most part, a snooze fest. Without Jack's charisma, I would rate it even lower. 5.5/10
Ditto. This 1981 treatment simply tried too hard. However, Nicholson and Lange certainly earned their money with the physical efforts alone!.:D
The 1946 original with Lana Turner and John Garfield is a far superior film. They sizzled without overdoing it, and the story pacing was better.

The only book I read out of the "Dark Tower" series was The Gunslinger. I was told by one of my friends who is a King nut and went see this in theaters to not expect anything from The Gunslinger. I think that's where this film went wrong - it was way too much way too fast, and it didn't give you any time to really care about Roland and his plight. I was shocked to see that the run time for this movie was only an hour and a half, no wonder nobody liked this. It isn't that it's a terrible film (I could have watched the Roland vs. Man in Black fight scene at the end for the entire length of the movie), it's just totally unworthy of the source material.

To be fair though i have to see Persona again, watched it when i was tired so i don't think i followed it properly. Planning on seeing Scenes From a Marriage next, relationship breakdown films can be great and i can imagine Bergman doing a good job with it.

Good choice, yeah, the dialouge in Scenes is incredible. Persona just grows with me, definitely needs to be watched at least a couple times. I need to rewatch Autumn Sonata, think that is still my fave. Nothing against B&W cinematography but Bergman's compositions shine in color.

I feel I missed out on Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets by not watching it in theaters. Like every sci-fi Luc Besson movie, it's all about visuals. But I ended up enjoying Valerian, frankly it was just good to see Clive Owen in a movie again. http://iconsoffright.com/news/angel_heart_poster.jpg
I first saw Angel Heart about ten years ago and it was a movie that I appreciated more than I enjoyed at the time. I loved the mixing of the noir/horror genre, and I really think that this movie doesn't get the attention/appreciation that it deserves. As someone who is from Louisiana (basically an hour south of New Orleans, the Voodoo stuff was filmed where I'm from), it was good to see a 1950s set New Orleans. The accents/presentation of culture isn't the greatest, but it's a helluva lot better than The Big Easy (1986) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Easy_(film)) (which is basically Cajun blackface). I do have problems with the story though, and it might have been something I always missed, but if Harry Angel is Johnny Favorite, why does Cyphre send him on this goose chase looking for himself? Was it just to **** with him? Or am I overthinking it? If anyone has any insight, feel free to PM me.
I actually plan on reading Hjortsberg's novel to see if it is clarified.
But despite my problems with the film, I'm all about it.

I was always aware of Family Enforcer, but always found excuses to not watch it. I finally bit the bullet last night, and I do not regret it. Yes, it's low budget, cheap, the camera work is uninspired, and Joseph Cortese isn't the greatest tough guy, but (first time billing) Joe Pesci and Frank Vincent both shine in this movie. I think the film's low budget works in its favor, and makes Family Enforcer feel more street level. I don't know if the lack of success lead to Ralph De Vito abandoning his career as a filmmaker (Family Enforcer is basically the poor man's Mean Streets) but I think there is enough there to appreciate De Vito's work, and I would have liked to have seen more of it.

Broadly speaking, yes, it is to "f*ck with him". Having Harry go on this dangerous and horrifying investigation where he keeps learning about the f*cked-up sh*t that Johnny Favorite was up to only to learn that he was Johnny all along (and that he inadvertently had sex with his own daughter on top of that) is very much the kind of twisted punishment that the Devil would inflict on someone who he (quite rightly) believed had cheated him.

There are 2 different parts that are switched back and forth throughout. That never really worked for me and it was ambiguous as to how they were trying to portray her.

If anyone is interested in why I hated it, here's what I wrote. It's probably one of the better reviews I've done.
Jackie review (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1680115#post1680115)
Jackie is definitely an acquired taste. Slow and indulgent but I found it beautiful, nevertheless. It’s like a fairy tale story in which the rug gets pulled out from under the princess. A whole life defined by a single moment and the agony of relieving that moment day after day. The remaining years become a fog. As if the future was already a memory.
Portman goes all out and it’s justly polarizing but I don’t think anyone can deny she commands the whole thing.
It be worth watching, at least once, for Mica Levi’s horror movie score.
I always found Close Encounters of the Third Kind extremely boring.
I've only seen three Bergmans: The Seventh Seal, Fanny and Alexander, and Cries and Whispers. I give them all 4.5. While I love The Seventh Seal and consider it a timeless classic, I do think Fanny and Alexander and Cries and Whispers are better. Cries and Whispers has such incredible cinematography and acting. Every shot is beautifully composed with brilliant use of color. The acting is full of long shots with such intense performances that it's actually mind blowing. I think one scene in particular might be the most brilliant expression of pain that I've ever seen in cinema, ever! The woman is laying in bed dying of cancer and goes from a state of relative comfort to excruciating agony, screaming, and crying, in a very long shot with no cut. But when I watched Cries and Whispers it was very hard to absorb because its so intensely artistic, and besides the artistry and brilliance of the performances there is no "entertainment" factors to hold the interest of anyone who doesn't love high art.
The Children's Hour
https://i.imgur.com/rUfvfwL.png
I kinda loved this mostly because it's so dated. It plays out like a horror film as if Lesbianism is the most horrifying thing you can imagine, the horror music coming on when Mrs Tilford was being told everything pretty much summed it all up. Actually dated might not be the right word because even though it's exaggerated with the horror music accusations like this could have ruined your life during this time. It managed to be pretty powerful as all the think of the children stuff was so hilarious at first then it took a dark turn when we saw the consequences. Shirley MacLaine was excellent i had no clue what this was supposed to be about before watching and yet i picked up on lesbian vibes and attraction to Audrey from her right away. Audrey was fine, still not a big fan of her. I liked the girl who played Mary alot too she was convincingly conniving and kinda evil, the only bad performance for me was the other main kid she was godawful. Anyway i liked this alot.

Man this film was nuts. So many of the characters made no sense and a few of them were absurd yet i liked it quite a bit anyway. I do kinda think this film brushed things aside to keep the film going as it didn't make sense that it hadn't all been wrapped up at various points. For example i have no clue why the detective treated Keanu with such hostility, Keanu reported it and took them to the body that shows that he knows what happened and that he doesn't feel right about it or in other words the perfect witness to close this case with. But no obviously we are going to treat him like an a-hole and try to scare him for no good reason so he flees and ends up with Layne again, it's difficult to accept that a detective wouldn't calmly get his statement and assure him he did the right thing regardless of any suspicions so he can use him at trial later, the last thing you'd want is him possibly ending up with the guys involved in the crime. Then even ignoring that Layne makes no sense either, i get John is his friend and possibly there'd be an urge to help him but John has either lost his mind or he wants to be caught so why on earth would you get yourself in the middle of this when the guy you are helping is so clearly unstable. Don't get why anyone was scared of him either he was a scrawny goofball, i accept that could be down to bad casting. Except it doesn't make sense in the story either, the only person who supports what Layne is doing (including John himself) is Matt's four year old brother it's not as if there's a gang of people they'd go against it's literally Layne and the child. Then no the brother turns against Matt because he gave up John and Layne but he's actually doing his own thing independent of Layne for some reason. I dunno alot of it was nuts and made no sense. Matt (and John actually...kinda) was the one who made the most sense, he saw something completely awful had a conscience and went to the police, everyone else was acting insane around him; Layne, his brother and the detective especially.
John was great wasn't sure if he was insane or had had a death wish or both but either way he was intriguing and very unnerving. He completely embodied disinterest at first, it didn't feel like an act or a defence mechanism; it seemed like he felt he was totally justified in what he did and that was that. If that continued i think he would have gotten boring but they really built him up well with the talk of him boasting to everyone without us really seeing it, as soon as John ended up with Feck he turned very intimidating. He had clearly lost it and he now seemed angry, it was always on my mind if he was regretting it at this point too. The most insane thing about the film was that Feck and John were actually pretty sympathetic even though they were monsters. Despite what he did i felt bad for John throughout. Layne was the one i hated in that situation because if it wasn't for him they may have been able to convince him to hand himself in and get help, it seemed like there was a strong possiblity he would have, maybe even wanted to hand himself in. If not then he at least wouldn't have been given safe haven and he most likely would have been caught before he went further off the deep end. Don't get me wrong he was a monster, the scene where he explains what he felt while killing her was messed up. Dennis Hopper's performance just oozed regret to me and i don't even know if it was intentional, before the film started trying to get you to feel for him a bit i already did. Of the other performances i think i liked Keanu but i also think i was supposed to get stuff from him that i didn't like him feeling...well anything about the death, he just kinda said he did i didn't pick anything up from him; he wasn't bad though. Really have no clue what to say about Crispin Glover, i want to say he was atrocious but he was weirdly watchable.
I definitely enjoyed watching this but i'm not sure how much i actually liked it. All of the dumb plot things weren't that big a deal i can ignore that, i think the film bordered on unlikeable though as it was very cynical and pessimistic. The teacher near the end and his "people only show empathy for a moral high ground" rant felt like the goal of the film to me, of course a character dismisses him in that scene as "full of sht" but the characters actions match up with that. Even though he was wrong Layne's actions were the only ones that had emotion behind them, his "Jamie is dead, John is alive" thing in a twisted sense was a positive outlook on life. The rest weren't at all, Clarissa literally asks Layne "wasn't Jamie our friend shouldn't we feel bad for her?" rather than ya know emoting and the disinterest at the funeral really hammered things home. Anyway, insane film.

Rear Window (1954) Re-watch
My personal favorite Hitchcock movie that's mostly set in L.B. 'Jeff' Jefferies' (James Stewart) apartment. He's got a broken leg and confined to a wheelchair most of the time and gets very bored. He has a care worker, Stella, (played with great humor by Thelma Ritter) to help him work on his muscles for the duration while he heals. Visiting him frequently is his beyond-beautiful, high society girlfriend, Lisa, played by the, again, beyond-beautiful Grace Kelly. Why he's bored when he's got her is a mystery that I doubt even Hitchcock could solve.
Jefferies begins to watch his neighbors in the surrounding courthouse of the apartment complex. He uses his photographic zoom lens and binoculars when he can't see the tiny details, which become important over time. It is summer and in the 50's, even in New York City, apparently everyone left their doors unlocked and their windows open. Jeff is glad of this as it gives him a front row, or "rear window" seat to watch everyone and build his own stories around them. There's Miss Lonely Hearts, who seems to be pining her life away waiting for a lover who may never come; Miss Torso, who exercises constantly and has a stunning figure; the piano player who plays beautiful music almost as a soundtrack to all the business going on in Jeff's view; the newlywed couple, with the husband trying to take a break by leaning out the window only to have his new wife call him back to the bedroom; the middle-aged couple who sleep on their mattress out on the fire escape and let their little dog down in a rope basket to do his business.
These are just a handful of the people who live in Jeff's view, but the one who interests him the most is Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), who constantly fights with his invalid wife who seemingly laughs at him and puts him down, although Jeff can't hear what they say. One night Jeff hears a scream in Thorwald's darkened apartment and his wife goes missing (to Jeff, who doesn't see her anymore). With Lisa and Stella helping him, Jeff begins his investigation into Mrs. Thorwald's disappearance. It's completely fascinating to watch the women try to track down clues as Jeff conducts from his apartment, then the three of them trading mental notes as to what could be happening. They're convinced Thorwald killed and cut up his wife's body and has been carrying it out of the apartment or shipping it out in a trunk. They don't know for sure but they're on the right track. Jeff tries to get his old war buddy, Detective Doyle (Wendell Corey) to help, but Doyle is less than convinced as to Thorwald's guilt.
As Hitchcock films Jeff spying on his neighbors, he makes him a voyeur, and in turn makes US the voyeurs, as we see what he sees. But Jeff isn't doing his spying for any prurient reasons---he's simply bored and lets himself become involved in his neighbors' lives. We, like Jeff, come to care what becomes of these people and if the murder will be solved. We really know it will but Hitchcock wouldn't have been the genius he was if he didn't plant some doubt in our minds. This is a masterful work from the Master of Suspense and this movie shows why the director earned that title. Absolutely recommended without reservation. A must-see and a must-own.

The Problem With The Problem With Apu
No image this time.
Even though some others made some okay points, Hari was so full of himself and made it look like the people behind Apu had vicious intents when all they wanted to do was create a funny character to entertain people. And while Apu might be stereotypical, he's not in the least comparable with minstrel shows, which directly were made to ridicule minorities. People making fun of Indians by comparing them to Apu, I'm sorry but that's not the show's fault. It's the fault of racist bigots who would have found some other way to make fun anyway. And the weirder part is, Hari states that he think Apu (and Manjula as well) are directly erasing his parents' history. Hari's parents are asked to voice their thoughts on Apu themselves, expressing that they see what he means, but they don't think it's a problem. Of course though, Hari dismisses this pretty easily. He also only briefly mentions how Apu has been developed over the years, forgetting how he became so much more than just a stereotype, an actually fleshed out character. He brings it up so briefly it wouldn't even have mattered if he didn't at all, since he's only interested in focusing on the early years of the show, and even in season 5 Apu had already become a three-dimensional character.
Hank especially didn't have any bad intent (and has even expressed afterwards he understands the complaints about his character), so for Hari to try to force him to stop voicing the character he loves just behind he personally can't stand him comes off as pretty selfish, more so than Azaria himself was. Azaria was even polite when declining to appear, saying he's proud of what he's doing, but Hari still got mad at him. Plus why first now? Why after 28 years? Did he really expect the people behind the show to replace him with another voice actor so late? This speaks to me of Hari not giving the benefit of the doubt that sometimes people are not as bad as you want to paint them up to be. Dana Gould was very polite and respectful as well talking to him, but he still got mad at Gould too, and tried to make it look like he demeaned minorities. The worst part is the ending where he punches clipboard outcuts of Hank Azaria and Apu, and saying this:
"You might love your grandfather, but you still know he has some racist tendencies. So if he doesn't change, maybe it's best he DIES."
And when I got to that line, I wanted to tell him "**** you!"
My grandfather is not racist and doesn't deserve to die, so screw you Hari.
Maulik Pancholy showed some intellectual intelligence, plus never acted angry in the way Hari did. If he did the documentary instead, it could have been okay. But unfortunately, Hari is the star.

The 'Burbs (1989)
Dir: Joe Dante
https://i.imgur.com/ZjQ7yIY.jpg
Potential Spoilers Below
Tom Hanks broke "big" just about the time of this release from Joe Dante - the guy who almost makes it to delivering a brilliant film, but somehow always drops the ball 3 feet from the goal line.
With Hanks' participation, along with Bruce Dern and Rick Duccomen, this movie mostly is a bona fide classic in every sense. From the amazing opening shot of the Universal logo into the back lot neighborhood, to the creepy Klopek house and the often very funny interplay between the stars (including a hilarious Sergio Leone moment involving a poodle), this movie is damn good, there's no mistaking that.
What always kind of knocks it down from being perfection is that ending. I've seen the alternate endings, and to be honest - not one of them works from a story standpoint. There is no real zinger for The 'Burbs, no matter which ending you go with. Hanks delivers his manic speech about normal suburban folks being the real threat to harmony, but even if the film ended on that note, it still would not have worked completely because, let's face it - that's a bit heavy for a film like this.
https://i.imgur.com/l6YjNBc.jpg
Enter Joe Dante. Dante has made many decent films. He truly has a love for camp cinema and the guy knows what he is doing to elicit an agreeable cast and wrangling chemistry moments to make his films work for comedy. He also hires very good crew members who round out the collaboration for such films to be grade "A" B-material. Unfortunately, Joe Dante has never really made a film with a great ending. He always seems to run out of ideas. Maybe it's the script he gets, maybe it's something else. I have no way of knowing. What I do know is that he's 7/8ths an awesome film maker - but those last few lines on the tape measure of quality are always shaved off.
I would think, as a director, you are responsible for making a script with a problem or two, especially the end - work. Writing your own twist or resolution. Endings are very important because they are the resonant element that you remember about a film a lot of times. With The 'Burbs, it's just a messy guessing game. The twists are stupid and don't pack any punch, and having Corey Feldman say the last line of the film, especially a line like "I love this street" is so beyond dumb. Even Ghostbusters was pushing it, but at least the ending of that movie had some good character wrap ups.
I love The 'Burbs. I watch it every couple of years. It's the kind of movie you can just pop on and always be entertained by. It's very funny, looks amazing, and is a great ensemble piece of film making. It's just that the ending, though not a deal breaker, is just so limp and nonsensical. I can't give this the highest rating because I feel like Dante's sensibilities just weren't there. I can't forgive as easily as I could another film that may've slightly "blown it".
Seemed like an easy fix. I mean, end the movie with something like The Klopek's being guilty of something, just nothing anyone can prove. Flash forward a few months and everyone is BBQ'ing together, including the Klopeks. Make the scene even more uncomfortable and awkward than the one earlier in their creaky old house, but also change the tone of the movie to where it was heading, anyway...down the road of the killer ice cream man. Have that mood happening before the credits start. There could be some gold funny moments in there that are unsettling at the same time. Everyone makes nice, but the frustration remains on Art's face at the BBQ that something isn't right. Ray has resigned from exhaustion so he's only into learning how to keep his burger meat together on the grill without losing clumps of meat to the charcoal below.
Anyway, sorry. Still love the movie. Most of it.

Taxi Driver (1976)
*spoilers*
So I watched this last night for the very first time. I was very impressed with Robert DeNiro!. His performance was worthy of a rating_5 I mean he was the character! He immersed himself into the role, it was really quite an amazing feat of method acting.
And I'm guessing it's DeNiro as the mentally unstable taxi driver that people love. Sure I could see this movie being a cult classic, but one of the all time great classics? Nah, I don't think so.
The first act, which ends after he takes Cybil Shepard to a porn film was all amazing. The intensity and oddness of the taxi driver, along with the ultra realness of the gritty world that he inhabited, was powerful stuff. It felt like I was there! I'd give the first act a rating_4+
But when the director Martin Scorsese appears in the film for the second time, things went downhill. As soon as I spotted him it took me right out of the film's world and made me acutely aware I was watching a movie. Worse than that, I realized as Scorsese set in the cab talking about shooting his cheating wife...his dialogue...and his body language was a duplicate of the taxi drivers. That took me out of the film even further...and it reminded me of Tarantino's stale choice to insert himself into Django Unchained. Neither director is a great actor, so leave the acting to the professionals.
In the final act I was hoping the relationship between Jodie Foster's 12 year old prostitute and her would be hero, the taxi driver, would be dynamic and would power the last part of the film. Unfortunately we only get one good scene between them in the restaurant, that develops their bond.
And while it can be said the prostitute was what triggered him to go on a shooting rampage, there wasn't enough about their relationship to bring the movie to a fevered pitch. Instead the final act of the shooting rampage just seems to be rushed. It's like there needed to be another scene before the ending.
As it was I found the ending emotionally unsatisfying, as I the viewer hadn't sufficiently been primed by the movie to hate the pimp and the hotel manager enough to really want to see them dead.
But I'm surprised I enjoyed the shooting spree as entertainment. I found it kind of funny/entertaining when he blows his fingers off, it was kind of comically filmed. But it lacked utter seriousness in the way it was filmed and so didn't deliver an emotional wallop like I would have hoped for.
Even the sound effects for the guns seemed muted and the camera angles got all artsy during the shooting. It was like Scorsese made a conscious decision to downplay the violence...especially in his choice of ending music score with an overbearing harp, of all things.
My rating of Taxi Driver

Taste of Cherry - 9/10
Seems like those who have seen this movie, love it..... but I've never seen anything written about it, and I can understand why - the description itself is a SPOILER, so avert your eyes!!!
I saw this movie twice before, and loved it every time, but it's not a movie you can re-watch... Ebert called this one of his most hated movies.. I don't like bad pace, but there was always something happening. There's a pretty good amount of dialogue, but yeah, a guy is driving alone, looking for someone to help him do something quite serious.
What did you think about the main character. My only criticism of the movie is that we don't know much about him, but that's also the interesting part.. Sometimes it was just the face, the eyes that told without telling. At times, I felt he was saying by his silence, "Look, I've thought about these things my entire life, I know myself by now, I'm a middle-aged man"
And why did he want to kill himself? I'm not sure if he was a homosexual, and that's the first vibe I (and many others) got. So with a further viewing, I could pay attention to other things besides "what's gonna happen". I thought to myself, he's in Iran, and it's frowned upon there. Long hair wasn't common in Iran in 1997, either, so maybe that was his way of revealing himself without jeopardizing his life..... I even thought, perhaps in the beginning he was using the money to buy a prostitute, and after he witnesses either people not wanting to talk to him, or one guy threatening to punch his face in, just because he asked if he needed money, and persisted... Pride, or maybe it was because he assumed something?

Nice - a long review! I'll restart and read it... Did you find it interesting how snarky he was? Darn good writing and acting.
Now I remember when I first saw it, because you had just seen it, and told me to watch "Close-Up" and I loved that almost as much. For some reason, I always have him in mind, but just never finished a movie - once it was pace, another time it was the video quality, with the embedded subtitles.
