Although she was brilliant, the star of the show for me, was David Thewlis. What an amazing performance.
That’s probably my most slept-upon show from last year. I think Hawley talked about there being mental trauma in finding out how it is that our world and systems can be twisted, cheated on and the closing scene to with Gloria and Varga perfectly encapsulated that for me. It’s the very same waiting game we’ve become locked in.
It’s as perfect an ending as Burn After Reading’s “What did we learn?”
Based on a classic bestselling novel. Never heard of it. Now to read the novel first which will ruin the film or forgo it?
I watched movie first and then read the novel, what is not like me. I prefer to read book before watching adaptation, but this time I've done conversely (randomly). I would say the order does not matter in this case:)
Yeah, I know - I helped;)

Very true Saunch. Varga knew how to play the game and the system. I never related to Burn After Reading but that's a great comparison.
Part of the fun, for me, is figuring out how each season is Frankenstein-ed from Coen Bros. movies. Until right at the end I missed how Ray and Nikki were really H.I. and Ed from Rasing Arizona.
I’m eager to revisit it. I’d been thinking about how the show leans into predator/prey dynamics and how S3 made that more abstract by having, not really V.M., but the very concept of corporations and entities against individuals be the comparison.
And I’m still waiting for the opportunity to use the term “psychic Drain-O” in an actual conversation.

I agree. For me, his character V.M. Varga and its portrayal was the best part of the 3rd season. He has the ability to be threatening in an offbeat way, and had the same chilling assertiveness as did Billy Bob Thornton's Lorne Malvo in the first season.
It's safe to say that Thewlis will get a lot of good parts owing to his excellent work in Fargo.

I need to give season 3 another chance. I gave up on it. I loved the first season, the second a little less, and by the time the third came around, I lost interest. But that could have been because I wasn't in the mood for it (this is another example of why I usually wait with certain things).

The soundtrack alone is already a masterpiece, not mentioning all the other brilliant things about this movie.
I’m kind of leaning towards Carrie Coon giving the best performance in season 3 of Fargo, though Thewlis owned it in the bit where he talks to McGregor about true wealth, invisibility and the fragile balance of our systems.

My boyfriend also said the 3rd was the best. We watch the good stuff together, and I couldn't figure out what mood I was in, so I said sure, let's do that...but I zoned out pretty fast. Gave up after 4 episodes. But I did say I'd get back to it.

She was great, although I'll still lean to Thewlis. The way he delivered some of those lines was nothing short of sublime. Also, anyone having to play a character with those teeth, deserves all the accolades he can get!
Special note also goes out to the scene with Varga talking about Sy's wife and the pastrami sandwhich.
One of my favorite things about S3 is the implication that, somewhere in the bowling alley, Llewyn Davis is spending eternity as a cat.
Biggest regret about S3: fixing myself a cup of coffee just as Sy has his... well, y’know.

Soundtrack is annoying to me but its not my kinda music, I still feel comfortable saying its pretty run of the mill. Still I don't see how you can see the characters as great, theyre very bland and under developed. The story took in more than it could chew, even the director called it unfinished. The film introduces interesting ideas but doesnt properly explore them, instead it rushes through much of the body swapping while it slow burns in far less interesting sections. It throws in a lot of stuff that was so barely touched upon it feels like it couldve been left out (the girl and her relationship with her father the mayor, the boy and his relationship with his co worker). As for the animation the backgrounds look nice but the character designs and animation are very flat.

Rambo is a wizard who can escape unscathed from any possible Baysplosion.
Rambo's crossbow magically sounds like bullets being fired.
Female soldiers in the jungle always carry their makeup to look perfect even under subdued lighting.
Good to see the 70-80s whiteknighting gone horribly wrong still alive and Richard Crenna still a colonel.
Shirts off most of the time makes the Rambo franchise the battle of the bulge for young wannabee rambos to make friends with a friendly russian veterinaran
Bring on Rambo 3.

Id give The Room a higher score because desite being inept its entertaining and memorable because of its ineptness. Kimi no na wa is not only boring as **** to me but it waves around these ideas that could be interesting if properly explored but it nothing more than a tease which kinda pisses me off. I also find it obnoxiousy manipulative. Its boring and pisses me off why doesnt that justify a 3/10?

I put this on my watchlist when Captain Spaulding declared it one of the best movies he watched last year. I made it a priority once I realized it was eligible for the female director's countdown. I am probably not going to completely love a coming of age type of film unless 80's nostalgia is involved, yet I thought this was wonderful. Most of these movies are too quirky or outrageous. This had the perfect balance of comedy and drama, and most importantly it all felt very real. The young cast did a fantastic job, but I was mostly impressed by Woody Harrelson. I've never seen him give such a low-key performance, and he was a joy to watch playing just a real nice guy. If I have any complaint, I would say that I would have liked to have seen a more outside the box ending. My wife enjoyed it as much as I did and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes these kinds of movies.
Couldn't make it to the end of The Limehouse Golem, I'm afraid. Found this very dull, very disappointing and very "not as advertised". Seemed to be more interested in telling the story of this woman's love life and music hall career than the Victorian serial killer thriller it was billed as, and left me bored and ultimately reaching for the remote... Shame, I was actually looking forward to this. :(

Cool movie, but I still do not understand the last quarter of the movie (when it takes the giant left turn and runs off the rails). Could you explain it to me, please?
it does kinda go off the rails, and I'm sure the book explains it far better, but they do touch on it earlier on in the film when the #2 guy at the shop in Grasse that normally torments and abuses him catches a whiff of what he's making and calms down and asks politely.
Certain scents do make us react, much like sound and sight. A song or something we saw that is horrifying, sexy, or beautiful; we react to it.
Well, they took that "reaction" to stimuli and, with his insane mastery, he created a scent that people adore one another and break into an orgy.
When he pours an outrageous amount on himself, the crowd, enticed, tear him apart, lost in their desire for a piece of him.
It's like those Axe cologne commercials where they say it'll make women hot for you and they lose control over you.
Hope that helps.
Will watch this. Sounds very weird....which intrigues me.
It is strange and quite compelling. Let me know if you do see it and what you think of it

They were so intoxicated by the beautiful smell of him in such a filthy stinking rotting city they thought he was an angel and devoured him
It took the director 12 months to find Whishaw for that role. The producers must have been so pissed off with him. And Edar, your description was spot on. He said he wanted the audience to smell the stench and the beauty through the visual depiction. They got it right.

That's very kind, thank you.
There always seems something very pain-staking and meticulous in the creation of the film. A kind of craftsmanship in it's execution and the scenes. I can very easily see how the Director took such exact care when he made this.
I did read a bit about him taking several years JUST to get the writer of the novel to let him make the film and how it was a work of love for him. It truly shows it.

Somewhere (2010, Sofia Coppola)
I watched this as I'm a fan of slow cinema and I want to explore Sofia's filmography. So far I've only seen Lost in Translation and The Beguiled of her movies. And also this is eligible for the Directed by Women Countdown, so that's another good reason to give this a look.
I liked the film, yes it was slow, but never boring. I was always engaged in what was happening and that says a lot because nothing too much happens, and I mean that in a good way. I say that because it's not a movie that is plot heavy. Hell I don't think there was a plot. Nor is it deep on character arcs, it doesn't need to be.
The beauty of the film is that it quietly observes it's subject. We go along for the ride, like were an invisible first hand observer. The subject is an actor played by Stephen Dorff, who's not sure where his life is going or even who he is.
The moments he spends with his daughter played by a young Elle Fanning were just like having a kid and not having to deal with the expense! Anyway I thought it was pretty refreshing compared to the usual fare...and while I'm not a total fan of Sofie Coppola's, I'll keep watching her movies.

The score was nice, acting real good and atmosphere was really creepy. I think the greatest part of the flick is the ending which was perfect and really well made.

It is strange and quite compelling. Let me know if you do see it and what you think of it
Thank you so much for the reply. That makes sense; I just couldn't quite figure that out directly from the movie.

- Surprisingly way better than I though it would be. I usually don't like slow pace horror flick but this one was astounding in every way... The score was nice, acting real good and atmosphere was really creepy. I think the greatest part of the flick is the ending which was perfect and really well made.

I think so. Only just. But Dystopia / post apocalyptic movies is a sub gerne I really enjoy so I might be a bit biased.
One thing I'll say about Good Time is that Benny Safdie's portrayal of the brother is so convincing he probably deserves more acting work on the strength of it alone! Scary good.
Mad Max by way of The Road.
Edit: well, it’s more about the lengths people will go to once they’ve got nothing left to loose.

The Music of Silence (Michael Radford): Based on the true story of legendary singer Andrea Bocelli, this film is set between the lead character (whose name is not Andrea Bocelli, but rather Amos Bardi - Amos is the name of Bocelli's son)'s birth to his groundbreaking performance in 1993 performing with Italian musician Zucchero on stage. This is a really good movie, driven by what I feel is a breakout performance by Toby Sebastian (Trystane Martell on Game of Thrones) as Amos and Antonio Banderas as the teacher who makes an impact on Amos' life by using silence to find his voice. My only issue was that the film is shot entirely in English, but I ultimately forgave it.
I got to interview Toby Sebastian (https://worldfilmgeek.com/2018/01/31/playing-a-legend-an-interview-with-the-music-of-silence-star-toby-sebastian/) about his preparation for the film and making the film, in which before shooting, he actually got to spend five days with Bocelli himself and study him.
If you like Andrea Bocelli, and you like biopics done right...even though Bocelli is "not exactly" the main character in terms of name, this is still a great look at the life of a legend.
Final Rating: A very solid B

Mom & Dad
(Brian Taylor)
https://i.imgur.com/OVvVqEI.png
2.5
There is a weird sense of frenzied fun to this film. I wouldn't expect anything less from Brian Taylor, one of two people responsible for Crank, Gamer and the Ghost Rider sequel. With Mom & Dad, Taylor mixes the insane with the grotesque and throws in some dark black comedy elements that creates a unique film experience, for better and worse.
Brent is an overworked and underpaid father who lusts after his younger days when he didn't care about things. His wife Kendall, desperately tries to connect with her teenage daughter Carly, but what teenage daughter wants to be best friends with their mother? A normal day, just like any other turns into a fight for survival as an unknown epidemic sweeps the nation. Parents start killing their children. Now Carly must race home to protect her little brother before mom and dad make it there.
There are two kinds of "Crazy-Cage" in films. His over the top performances can rub some people the wrong way. His take on Ghost Rider in the second film is bizarre and The Wicker Man lives on in infamy for the unintentional hilarity that it is. Then you have films where he channels the right amount of absurdity in key situations. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is a fun trip down a drug fueled nightmare and Kick-Ass has a lot of fun with his Adam West impression. Mom & Dad walks a fine line between both, but going into this film knowing the premise, you've got to hand it to Cage with how far he takes his insanity. A sequence where he smashes a newly built pool table with a sledgehammer while singing the "Hokey-Pokey" is comically strange, especially when you realize that this takes place BEFORE the insanity happens. Cage really turns in a comically delightful performance and Selma Blair does a good job balancing the other half of this marriage as his wife. Her eyes do a lot of acting here, with one look of sheer determination to kill her two kids. She is stuck in this mom role and had to sacrifice her career, now it's her turn for revenge.
The premise alone will turn some people off and to be honest, there were a few times when I felt rather uneasy. It's hard to take delight in seeing a mother strangle her daughter to death with a tie. One sequence in particular had me wide eyed with fear as to what Taylor was going to do when a mother gives birth to her first born, then immediately wants to kill it. Again, this is a really dark black comedy.
Not much of a story here, it seems that Taylor came up with a premise and just 'went with it'. Carly has a boyfriend whose only role seems to be saviour. He gets knocked out a bunch of times only to come back at the last second to save so and so. There is a nice turn of events when guests arrive at the house during the carnage, but this was to be expected after seeing the actor in the opening 70 styled Bond-esque credit sequence. For a film that has a wild premise, I was surprised to see the lack of gore on the screen. I thought Taylor would have gone wild here, but maybe seeing adults murder the hell out of kids was too much for the MPAA and Taylor leaves a lot of it to our imagination.
While the film has some fun moments, a lot of it is a chaotic mess. Poor editing choices that distract from the excitement, odd pacing to try and cram in character relationships and a lazy and uninspired ending leaves a lot to be desired. Mom & Dad is a frustrating film. It could have really been better if Taylor had maybe built a bit more tension in the beginning and had a clear direction to go in the end. I'm all for ambiguity, but Mom & Dad takes that to another level. In the end nothing is answered, resolved and explored. It literally ends mid-sentence. I can see an entire theatre throwing their hands up in the air with disappointment and confusion, which leads to anger and hatred, then suffering. We all know what happens after that.

Yeah me too. Never really understood why Lane's career never really took off when she was regarded as the 'new Grace Kelly' earlier on, but she was given some really crap scripts where the movies kept flopping. I thought she was amazing in Unfaithful with Gere and Martinez. I see she and Kinnear have just been cast in House of Cards - I thought that show was axed because of the Spacey allegations?

Y'know, the usual. Its quite atmospheric in a post swinging sixties dour London way. And has Patrick Magee doing an insane turn as the Minister! Definately watchable once....2.5/5.

Really? I thought Michael Cera was pretty much perfect as Scott
I don’t know. I think he’s too... “aw jeez” for the role. The way Scott reads on paper is as someone more, well, “assertive” isn’t the right term but it’s along those lines. Someone who would believably take for granted all the easy aspects of his life. Cera doesn’t convey that for me.
That there’s no chemistry between him and Winstead hinders the film as well.

But ugh it was all over the place, talk about a movie with no direction. And did it need to be 2 hours and 21 minutes long? And it felt much longer than that. Most of what we get to see isn't in the Amazonian jungle but back in England with scenes that start and go nowhere and really didn't fit in well with the story at hand. Had all the superfluous material been removed, then this would have been an OK movie at about 1 hour 45 long.
The other problem was the three long monologues in which the characters 'preach' about social injustices. Normally that would be a good thing, depending on how it was used, but in this case the monologue speeches sounded like 21st century ideology and not of the era of the film which was 1910s to 1925.
All this might have been OK if the adventure in the jungle wasn't such a let down.

I need to give Scott Pilgrim another shot someday - it's one of the very few movies I actually shut off half way through. And the weird thing is I like quirky movies, I like a lot of comic book-based movie, I like Michael Cera (in Juno, Superbad and Year One) and I LOVE Mary Elizabeth Winstead (esp. in Sky High)!
I don't know what it was about this movie that turned me off to the point where I turned IT off (maybe just the wrong time or wrong mood).
I never read the comic, so I had nothing to compare it to - those are usually the comic-based movies I like, because I don't realize how badly they've messed with the source material.

Feel good movie.
It starts very great but sometimes it looks it's trying too hard to force the James Stewart's self sacrifice... by the way, he was awesome in this. It have it's moments but that 'A Christmas Carol' ending wasn't that great, I like the message, James Stewart acting and the second act is very, very fun to watch!

I agree to the first, and I've had Kingdom of Heaven here to watch for months but I'm afraid to say that as much as I loved Orlando with pointy ears and long hair, for some reason he is the reason why I keep putting off the movie.
To me Orlando Bloom was never better than as the straight man for Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean :).
I've never seen Kingdom of Heaven all the way through but what I have seen I didn't respond to. It's much the same with Robin Hood and many of Ridley Scott's more recent films. I liked Gladiator though.

Yeah me too. Never really understood why Lane's career never really took off when she was regarded as the 'new Grace Kelly' earlier on, but she was given some really crap scripts where the movies kept flopping. I thought she was amazing in Unfaithful with Gere and Martinez.
I've always liked Diane Lane.
I see she and Kinnear have just been cast in House of Cards - I thought that show was axed because of the Spacey allegations?
I think they decided, much like with All the Money in the World, that it would be completely wrong to have the allegations around Spacey affect the production – and everybody else who had worked on it and should continue to.

Happy Death Day
(Christopher B. Landon)

Go Shawty, it's yur birfday.
50 Cent's In Da Club was in this trailer, slowed down to comedic effect. Unfortunately they couldn't secure the rights for the movie and had to change her ringtone. How did they get it for the trailer? I have no idea. I had more fun with this Groundhog Day inspired slasher film than I expected to. With a charismatic lead performance from relative newcomer Jessica Rothe, Happy Death Day manages to have fun in a tiredness of the classic repeating day troupe.
Tree is a sorority girl who manages to be a bitch to everyone. She is rude to a guy whose dorm room she wakes up in, the people she meets in the morning, her roommate and constantly ignores her father trying to call her on her birthday. Karma catches up to her when a masked figure stabs her to death. But wait, there's more!!!! Tree wakes up again, back in that dorm room. Things are eerily similar and she decides to take a different route from where she died last time. Yet that darn masked killer finds her and once again slices and dices. Rinse repeat. Now Tree must find out who her killer is and hopefully break this repeating cycle before the constant dying somehow ends up permanent.
Happy Death Day takes the slasher genre and mixes it with Groundhog Day. So it knows what it wants to be and it has fun with the subject matter. The director, Christopher B. Landon, has fun with the investigative aspects of Tree trying to solve her own murder. Eliminating suspects each time she dies. Plenty of room for comedy here and they make use of it. I would have appreciated a little bit more on the bloody side of things. This film is rated PG-13 and the lack of on screen gore really shows. Much like The Final Girls, Happy Death Day wants to pay homage to the 80's and 90's slasher genre, but feels crippled by the rating.
The identity of the killer was no surprise to me, films like this like to throw curveballs here and there and I found this one to be a little obvious. Story wise it made sense to me and worked well within the comedic aspects previously presented. Motifs are usually hit or miss, but here it could have been anything and it would work.
In most of these films it usually takes the lead character to change their personality from bad to good in order to break the loop. Tree takes this route too, but it mostly has to deal with finding and stopping her killer. Rothe makes the transition from bad to good believable and isn't afraid of making herself seem less desirable for a laugh. She is an attractive person and I feel like a lesser person who worries about their image wouldn't do the fart joke she does in the film, but here she is game and has fun with the material.
Happy Death Day surprised me with how much fun I had. It's nowhere near perfect and I could pinpoint a lot of problems, but the overall package is a neatly tied up one that I appreciated. The onscreen chemistry between Rothe and dorm boy Israel Broussard is believable and I wouldn't mind visiting these people again in a sequel. I feel like horror films as of late have been on an upward trend. I'm liking this.

You are right. In Unfaithful she was amazing. In Under the Toscan Sun also. I like her every time I see her on the screen.

They only considered axing the show after Spacey got outed but then they decided to do one last season without him. For all it’s hype, i never found the show to be more than an amusing exercise in theatricality. The acting is really the only interesting aspect about it and, even then, only Spacey found the right balance of soap opera villain and Richard III.

After all these years and multiple rewatches the tension from Jessica, Nolte and Juliette never fails to stress me out. Robert De Niro was scary as hell in this.
Juliette Lewis was amazing. So sad she never pushed with the acting (not for her because she's obviously a great success in the music industry and having a great time) because that role made me think she was the next big thing. I really like her.

Given its reputation (often commented on by Fincher himself), you’d imagine that this some sort of extraordinary train wreck but it’s really... not. It’s perfectly competent most of the time, often bits of brilliance peak through. It’s far and away better than either of Scott’s last two entries. Weaver is committed as always but I was kind of transfixed by Tywin Lannister. I really like that guy. The most interesting aspect of this is seeing Fincher’s style at its, shall we say, chest-buster state? The cuts are too quick. The steady and omnipresent camera is there but it’s as if it doesn’t know where to look yet. The close-ups are almost too clever and the right information isn’t given to the audience. I’m so used to Dave as this master of the form that seeing what really amounts to a sketch was a strange sort of look behind the curtain. I really want to watch Se7en now.

Oh I didnt know about that. I dont think you can beat De Niro.
There's a lot wrong with that movie IMO but I always enjoy the stress the actors give me, but gee, Sam did some really stupid stuff. What an idiot over and over again. Well if he hadnt been an idiot it would have been a totally different movie so I just go with it.
We got to be close to a new iteration of the story, right?
Lots of fun actors for the leads right now. I’m particularly fond the idea of an Inherent Vice reunion (Josh Brolin as Bowden and Joaquin as Cady).

A Ghost Story (2017)
I wasn't quite sure what to make of this. Overall I think it was good, but there were moments I couldn't quite take seriously and made me think it was a bit 'pretentious student film' or good short film stretched out to 90 minutes. I liked the concept but sometimes it didn't seem to be any more than the concept. But I did like the framing. And the music and sound.

The first third did feel like a bit of a mumble-core mess.

The diner burp scene in The Florida Project where Moonee eats all sorts of garbage. That was somehow harder to watch than the Rooney pie scene.
Edit: How the hell did Hashtags King of Comedy post get in here? Deleted anyway.

Maybe I just had a losing streak of meeting JB haters or something. The guy deserves a thread all his own. Pick of Destiny was special.

One of Carol Reed's finest, based on a short story by Graham Greene. Released a year before his masterpiece, The Third Man, Reed's penchant for mysterious street scenes and unusual camera angles are on full display in this captivating suspense drama.
There was a fine performance by Ralph Richardson as Mr. Baines, the butler, harassed by his nasty and dominating wife wonderfully acted by Sonia Dresdel. The young boy was played by Bobby Henrey, who was believable and well casted. His dialogue was written with a little too much nattering neediness, but the approach of moving along the plot primarily through his eyes draws the viewer into the drama.
There were excellent supporting roles by Michele Morgan as the mistress and Denis O'Dea as the chief inspector. The film won the BAFTA award that year for best picture.
Doc's rating: 8/10
You are right. In Unfaithful she was amazing. In Under the Toscan Sun also. I like her every time I see her on the screen.

What a great film! Loved this from start to finish. A real baddie vs baddie with historical truth. I thought this might be a Hammer production (due to the great titles) but no. Definately recommend this. Vincent Price and Ian Ogilvy are both excellent..a blood curdling 4/5

Holy macaroni!
Backtrack. A young woman (Jodie Foster) witnesses a Mob killing and elects to go on the run when she decides the police can't protect her. A hit-man (Dennis Hopper) is sent to eliminate her but no one predicted the hired killer falling for the very woman he's supposed to kill... This oddball 1990 thriller has a fantastic cast (Joe Pesci, John Turturro, Dean Stockwell, Charlie Sheen and even Vincent Price!) and, although it doesn't quite work (the relationship between Foster and Hopper never really convinces, and Hopper is a bit miscast to be honest), it's still pretty watchable and entertaining throughout, and Jodie is fricking smokin' in it.;)

The film's tone is a little confused, some parts it wants to be Green Room and other parts it wants to be a generic ITV crime drama. The poster advertises itself as an exploitation rape and revenge films from the 70's and punk rock is scored to some very brutal moments. The ITV crime drama bits take up a chunk of the last act, it's pretty annoying but not experience ruining. The main character is very interesting, the man who performs him does it fantastically.
If the film was less 'Midsomer Murders' and more 'Last House on the Left' I'd like it alot more. Definitely check it out.

Get Out - 2017
Now this is how you make a horror movie. If all horror movies were more like this I'd like the genre a lot more. You don't need cheap jump scares and gratuitous gore to make a good horror flick. Just good old fashion suspense. This will be an iconic move for a long time. It just took me such a long time because I am about nauseated with the race issue. I get why Peele would want to make a movie like this, a black horror flick doesn't have a lot of entries. I just think surrounding the whole movie with a backdrop of race hinders it at times (probably wouldn't have been as financially successful without it though, people love to be "woke" now a days). I just think he could have crafted a universal story while still having a black man as the lead without using the crutch of race. There really was no good reason as to why black people are used how they are, it could be any race or ethnicity. Which the movie actually points out at the end. Don't want to divulge much more without getting into spoilers. That's my one pet peeve with black filmmakers, they tend to use race as a crutch in their stories. They say I'm just speaking my truth. It's narrow thinking to me. They pigeonhole themselves into boxes this way instead of making universal stories. Anyways, might be a hot take, but it's how I feel. It was a very entertaining flick and definitely worth a watch.
I'd give it a soft 4 out of 5.

3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 2017
My first thought about 3 Billboards was over the top. But the movie does stay with you. I think it does deserve all the acting nominations and wins it has gotten. Really great acting. However I don't think it deserves all the best picture wins it's been getting, I'd be disappointed if it won Oscar for best pic. I think Dunkirk, Lady Bird, Get Out and Blade Runner (not nominated) are more well deserving. (Haven't seen other Oscar noms yet). Hell I think Wind River is along the lines the same type of movie and I thought it was a lot better. Wind River is a great comparison for me. Where Wind River was more subtle 3 Billboards is more in your face and exaggerated. I prefer a movie that is more subtle in it's execution, 90% of the time. Some of the side characters in the flick are really sort of pointless and throw away to me. The best thing the movie has going for it, besides it's acting, is by the end you really don't know who you are rooting for. I think that's what sticks with you. Worth a watch, but I'm not rushing back anytime soon to watch it again.
I'd give it a 2.9 out of 5.

Blade Runner 2049 - 2017
Eyegasm. I didn't know that was a word until I made it up a month ago after I watched this movie.I had never seen the original until about a week or so before I bought 2049 on bluray. It's not completely necessary but I'd recommend it. I enjoyed the original well enough but the sequel is memorizing and I feel better. It's kind of an absolute joke this movie didn't get nominated for best picture at the Oscars or any other award show for that matter. It never stood a chance in today's extreme PC climate, except for visual awards because that can't be denied. It is one of the most visually stunning films I have ever seen. It almost takes your breathe away. But with no real meaty roles for minorities and the bigger reason feminist will absolutely detest this film. Specially in 2017 with #MeToo and #TimesUp it had no chance of being recognized by the academy. This is why all this bitching about diversity in the Oscars drive me crazy. Do people of color/women win on merit or charity? Don't get me wrong I usually root for them because it's something different, but I'd rather see someone win based off merit than some PC movement.
Anyways, back to Blade Runner. The acting was phenomenal. Gosling had to be on his A game and he was, it's basically his movie as he is on screen for most of it. Everyone does great. I really found Ana de Armas was a revaluation for me, I thought she was amazing and sue me she is breathtakingly beautiful. The story also really keeps you invested and interested thoughout. They really do expand the universe from the first Blade Runner. But again the most impressive thing about this movie is the visuals. It is just a mind numbingly beautiful film. I'd go watch this movie immediately.

I can name about 10 movies this year more deserving for best picture than this. But this or Lady Bird has my money because it has strong female leads and especially this year the academy will kneel before female movies for PR reasons. (I'm Ok with Lady Bird winning though, even though I liked other movies better as well I still really liked it) The acting can't be denied and it is good enough to be nominated I guess. But choppy is a really good word for it. Just to over the top for my taste in some of the choices. Harrelson was my favorite part of the movie. I hope he wins but I doubt it. Rockwell was just as good but I didn't like some of the choices with his character. My hope is it doesn't win best picture it's been recognized enough.

Lady Bird - 2017
Saoirse Ronan. You next. Man she is a stud (that's progressive right? Calling her a stud?). 3rd Oscar nomination and she is only 23. Good golly. She freaking shines in this film. She is a mega talent. I haven't seen her in anything else, never really been interested in her other work. I hope she doesn't stay in the Oscary movies forever try her hand at a blockbuster or something lighter in the future. I'm pulling for her to win.
Gerta Gerwig is next too. Quite the directing debut. Her fingertips are all over this movie. The scenes are almost not scenes its really unique and hard for me to describe but work beautifully. Much like Coogler and Creed to me it's a lesser movie in another person's hands. You can feel their voices in both movies. This is what I admire about Coogler and hopefully with Gerwig going forward as well (to a degree with Jenkins and WW as well) they made movies with strong female and black leads that are sorely needed but with universal stories. They aren't slamming you with preachy tones and scenes, it's a light touch. Lady Bird is the best kind of feminist film, like Wonder Woman, it doesn't man hate. Gerwig's direction is phenomenal to me. I still hope Nolan wins because it's stupid he hasn't won much less been nominated yet. Guy is the best director working. But it does relieve me if he loses to Gerwig at least it wasn't a charity win and she deserves it. (Not more than Nolan though damn it!)
The movie itself really takes you on a believable, entertaining ride through Lady Bird's senior year of high school. It doesn't fall into the tropes of Saorise going boy crazy in high school. She dates boys but she doesn't lose her mind and her goals which is attributed to Gerwig's direction and writing. A man couldn't have handled this movie as well as Gerwig. The most interesting theme I took from this, well I watch a youtube video on the movie after, which opened my eyes to a theme from a quote I did like in this movie. Attention is love. Isn't it true? Here is the quote I really loved:
Sister Sarah Joan: You clearly love Sacramento
Lady Bird: I do?
Sister Sarah Joan: You write about Sacramento so affectionately and with such care
Lady Bird: I was just describing it
Sister Sarah Joan: Well it comes across as love
Lady Bird: Sure, I guess I pay attention
Sister Sarah Joan: Don't you think maybe they are the same thing? Love and attention?
That is a great exchange and really true, at least from my perspective. She didn't need a boy to tell her this or learn from a boy. She learns it from her relationship with her city and mom. Awesome. Anyways I really enjoyed it. The end was a tad underwhelming but still not horrible. Go watch it!
4.4 out of 5.

Dunkirk - 2017
So. Yea. Nolan is a genius. He is head and shoulders above everyone directing right now to me. Does he have flaws? Yes. Do I care? No. His films prove audiences want to be challenged. His use of practical effects is God sent. The man just has not let me down to date (although TDKR was close). I'm so glad he finally got his due and got nominated for best director. I'm hoping like hell he wins but in this climate as I've stated in these other reviews I think he stands no chance. I hope one day he gets that gold statue, he deserves it, but doesn't need its validation.
Anyways to Dunkirk. I am a shamed to say I missed this one in theaters. I've seen all his movies since TDK in theaters the first weekend. I graduated radiologic technician school around the time it came out and started a new career so it was tough to make time to see it. But I saw it about a month ago. Yea Nolan still has it. He just knows how to craft an entertaining film. It's unique, it's not really what you expect from Nolan and it is an experience. There is a scene where I swelled up with pride and I'm not even British. Really cool. Anyways yall know to go see it it's a Nolan flick. I desperately want Dunkirk to win best picture or Nolan to win best director. We will see. I'm not hopeful. I'm sure he will be back in the running again soon if not.
As far as what Nolan does next. I kind of warming up to a Nolan Western. He would freaking murder a Western. With his eye for spectacle and story? Sheesh He can do whatever he wants but I do think he does a Bond film within his next 2 flicks. I think he really wants to try his hand at Bond, he is a self-proclaimed fan. I think he does it after the next one however when Craig is done and he gets his own pick of Bond. Not that he needs it but I think he uses the Bond franchise as leverage like he did Batman to do whatever he wants in between flicks. Smart dude. Here are Nolan's flicks ranked to me now.
10.)The Following
9.)TDKR ( I think Ledger dying sort of compromised his 3rd one. He was gong be a part of it. Think the movie suffered, still entertaining though)
8.) Insomina
7.) Interstellar (I think this will age better through time)
6.) Memento
5.) Dunkirk
4.) Batman Begins
3.) Inception
2.) TDK
1.) The Prestige

Shape Of Water. I'll jump on here and do another one after I see it here soon. Might see Call Me By Your Name. No clue what it's about, so I would have to investigate first. No desire to see Phatom Thread. Not a big PTA guy or DDL. They get to artsy for my taste. I hope neither wins, God knows DDL has won enough. The Post? meh. Streep annoys me. Blanchett >>>>> Streep.

The film has nothing to do with the 'oppressed black people Oscar bait' you think it is. The film is meant to be a satire on progressives who claim to be not racist (If I could, I'd vote for Obama for a third term) but end up being more racist than the people they claim to hate.

Billed as an erotic thriller, I reckon Channel 5 (apologies non-uk ers :)) could get away with this in their 3.15pm slot. Not erotic and very predictable. The lad Ryan Guzman is OK in it but i wanted more "sizzle" and less soap opera. Could have been alot better. Jennifer Lopez is as sultry and enticing as a weekend in Aberystwyth...with the rain coming down 2/5.
I'm not huge fan of him, but he is good from time to time. Thanks for recommendation. Always welcome:)
No problems. Likewise, more miss than hit for me. "Drugstore Cowboy" was good i thought.
Do you have kids or are you a bit like me and dont need kids for an excuse to see a kids' movie when you feel like it? I keep telling Mr D I want to see paddington 1 and 2 and he tells me to bugger off.
Brigsby Bear isn't a kids movie, it's pretty dark. Cricket thought it was too from the poster but it's not.

This is Jackie Chan at his finest as an actor: stunts take a back seat. This film shows that he has taken in a considerable amount of skill over his lifetime as an actor, and it clearly shows in his face and the way he carries the character. There’s an equally good performance from Bronson but nothing we haven’t already seen before. As for the story it’s also nothing we haven’t seen before either: good man gets pushed too far and then bad guys get punished. In a nutshell, see this film if you’re a fan of Chan because he clearly knows what moves the audience.

The Cloverfield Paradox

It's no mistake now that the team behind the Cloverfield series is simply purchasing films that are already shot or written and re-working them to fit within their "world". This entry into the series is no different, but at least we have a direct connection and explanation for things, which will make this film the main one that will connect every single 'Cloverfield' entry from here on out.
In an attempt to produce endless energy, a group of people board a space shuttle known as The Shepard. Over 600 days in space with failure after failure, they finally manage to create something. But that something is not what they expected and now they have to fight to survive and deal with the horrors they've unleashed.
There is a moment in the film that is pure exposition, delivered by Donal Logue. The scene really felt forced in there to be an explanation for the monster in the original film. It was such an awkward jumble of words that it stands out like a sore thumb. I felt like they could have delivered this information a bit differently, by someone on the ship maybe. There are other moments of missed opportunities as well, specifically when you are dealing with the plot devices they use here.
The film tries to deliver a sense of dread, but it doesn't really get there. There are moments where the weirdness explodes and we are dealing with severed limbs still working or body horror involving eyes and skin. I get the sense that they wanted these weird occurrences to really amp of the mystery. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. As a whole though, the film does deliver an edge of your seat sic/fi space survival flick. So for that it gets a thumbs up from me.
Paramount clearly thought they had a stinker on their hands, which is why they dumped the film to Netflix. Saying this film sucks is a disservice to the material. It's ambitious enough to try and create a connecting tissue to the other films and anything else that Bad Robot wants to come up with. I applaud that, as well as their explanation for why things happened, to me is good enough. This film will be the most divisive one yet, that is clear.
