Just watched Men in Black 3. Watched the whole series today. Can't decide whether I like this one or the first movie the best, but I must admit I enjoyed it a lot.

High 3.

Another great portrayal by Dustin Hofman.

I watched The Fast and the Furious 6, it wasn't something that I had anticipated or premeditated, rather, it was something that happened at the spur of the moment. Somebody asked me to go see a movie with them, I did, and it just so happened to be Fast 6. I enjoyed it, wasn't a great movie, but was certainly what I'd call a nice and enjoyable movie, popcorn flick par extravagance, I hadn't seen the other five movies which didn't stop me from enjoying it.

I just finished watching The Game. To be honest, I think I liked the movie, but I'm still recovering from the ending lol. It sure kept me hooked for its entire length, though, and I really enjoyed the plot, although the ending is really hard to believe for me. But, overall, a pretty solid movie. 4

If a movie is TOO believable there must be something wrong with it.

Aha indeed, but I don't know, seems to me like there is a lot of plot holes :P

I'm a big Wachowski fan, so I might be biased, but I think they've done it again. Thankfully, the travesty that was Speed Racer can finally be erased and replaced in my head. I can now officially be excited for Jupiter Ascending.

3 Idiots

Indian movie about 3 college friends. Far too long but somewhat engaging. Whilst the movie was flawed it did one thing extremely well - created and developed characters that I cared about.

8/10

Life is Beautiful

This was an interesting experience. I found the first half a bit boring and the comedy annoying. However, the second half made it one of the more memorable movies I've watched. I expected not to like this but ...

10/10

Casino

Should have been great but something was missing. I think perhaps Sharon Stone was a bad choice - not a good enough actress for a role like this. Also, felt like Scorsese failed to create characters with real depth which is usually one of his skills. I enjoyed it but wanted more.

8/10

Gangs of Wasseypur

An amazing modern indian film, a complete aberration as this is a full fledged masterpiece. It definitely holds its place amongst the top gangster films, I'm talking about Casino, The Departed and etc. Highly recommended.

Planet 51 - 8/10

First, let me clarify, because I know I've said I don't like sci-fi, and usually I don't, unless its a comedy, in which case I'll probably love it. (ie, 3rd rock from the sun tv show, hitchhikers guide to the universe book, etc)Loved it, but it's hard to give a kid's animation movie a high rating, so this is what I was most comfortable with. But in terms of kids animation movies, it's definitely up there with some of my favorites. I thought it was funny, plus it had tons of underlying meanings, including older sci-fi movie references. I just thought the whole thing was so clever, and it was funny and entertaining. (Is it sad that most movies that make me laugh out loud are kids movies?)

Duck Soup - 8.5/10

Funny on all fronts, a great movie. I personally, for a movie's sake, don't enjoy the kind of candid humor that is unnatural. It's more or less vaudeville put on screen, but with a more elaborate, meaningful plot, which made it worthwhile. Harpo Marx is my favorite in the movie - hilarious! And it makes me sad there's barely any physical comedy today, and if there is it is greatly unappreciated. It gets its rating from it's pure humor and its satire.

The first and third act are not that great, but an action bonanza at the end!

Vampire movie from Park Chan-wook. I liked it but some of the effects were annoying. No real reason for vampires to jump everywhere so if the effects look bad, leave them out.

Looks great and is well acted but was lacking something. Plot wise, to me, it struggled in parts and I didn't like the ending much. Still good though.

Have thought about this for a week because I didn't know what rating to give it. Have never hated such a great movie quite so much. I guess that's the intention.

Proximity, love Night on Earth! Especially the Roberto Benigni sequence. :)

Stag Night (2008) Directed by actor Breckin Meyer, who also has a big role in the film. Stag party guys, along with two strippers, get stranded in the subway system in the wee hours of the morning, stalked by killer homeless people! Yes, I know, but it was compelling for most of its running time, till the crap ending. What sucked was that the script set it up to NOT have the ending it did. Oh well. 5/10

Moonrise Kingdom (2012) Another very good Wes Anderson film, with the big-name stars taking a back seat to the two young leads, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward. The dry humor is great, with the adult stars, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, etc. doing good work. But the kids are the stars of the movie, no doubt, and even though their delivery is mostly (and purposefully) deadpan, they deliver. Just a feel-good movie. 9/10

The ending was really crappy. I also think I would have preferred someone other than Shia LaBeouf in his role, but the rest of the cast was great, especially Tom Hardy. Still, I really liked it and it's probably something I'll end up watching many times. Too bad about the ending.

I initially planned to light up while watching this, but from the moment I started the movie til Kidman's striking final line, I was completely absorbed and didn't even think about anything else. This film is hilariously under-praised.

Proximity, love Night on Earth! Especially the Roberto Benigni sequence. :)

Same! My favorite sequence was probably the one with Rosie Perez. Yo-Yo and Helmut brought the lulz. My favorite thing about Jarmusch - at least of the films I've seen - is that he meditates on the mundane. He brings a short film mentality to the feature - capturing the moment and establishing that whatever takes place outside of it is not a prerequisite for understanding or emotional investment.

The Horde - 6.5/10

Decent as far as the more serious of zombie flicks go. Plenty of action and awesome visuals. A few of the fight scenes were awesome to say the least. Mostly predictable, but often funny in places while never becoming slapstick.

Even though the zombie subgenre may be oversaturated at this point; this is one of the better flicks to pick from. I'd definitely recommend a viewing, and it's well worth the ride.

I also saw The Elephant Man recently but I didn't like it.Despite some raw scenes,I felt that it has lots of sentimentality. However,I liked Anthony Hopkins acting performance!

Anyway,today I watched Nil By Mouth.I'd give it a 2.5

The first review on that poster says Blue Velvet is a masterpiece. I am not so sure. While I really enjoyed it, I just don't consider this film to be great after my first viewing. Mulholland Drive is a masterpiece. As soon as I'd started to watch the latter, I knew that I was going to witness a masterpiece, I knew it was a masterpiece as I was watching it, and at the end I was amazed at what I saw, even though I had not understood everything.

Blue Velvet has nice cinematography, very good music, and a terrific villain in Frank Booth. And it is a very good movie, that I would recommend to fans of the mystery and suspense genre. But Lynch will simply never be able to top Mulholland Drive, and I know he has not made a better movie, even though I've only seen two of his films.

Make sure you watch Twin Peaks, the series, first. It's a masterpiece (at least the first season, but I love both) but I can't imagine what the first season and a half would be like knowing who the killer is.

I second this... It is absolutely necessary to watch the TV show before the movie. Not just for the identity of the killer but lots of other tiny details as well.

Fast and the Furious 6
7/10 - Surprisingly good, the ending was in no way realistic though.

The Social Network
8/10 - A little boring, but I liked the directing and the acting, and it was interesting to see how things unfolded.

How Do You Know
7.5/10 - I thought it strayed from normal romantic comedies, and I was pleasantly surprised at Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd's acting. I bought it skeptical because their movies can go either way, but went through with the sale because Reese Witherspoon rarely if ever does a bad movie. I enjoyed it.

Crazy Stupid Love
7.5/10 - Good movie, liked the acting and story better than ^. But it was way more "hopeless romantic" style. Still so, so cute, and funny, but for once I would like a cynical romantic comedy through and through. Is that so much to ask?

Reservoir Dogs
8.7/10 - Rewatch. Again, with the QT, awesome extended dialogue and characters. It really didn't jump out and grab me, as you may say, I didn't especially love the movie, it was even pretty predictable. But I gotta give points for the directing, dialogue, acting, and characters. Well done, indeed, but didn't hit my love bone.

**Edit** I changed the two romantic comedies from 8/10 to 7.5/10.

Anyways, watched There's Somethings About Mary tonight, great film, laughed a lot, which is surprising because few comedies achieved to do so. Acting was decent, and I kind of liked the guitar dudes a lot :P 7.5/10

Watched a few over the weekend there:-

The Prey (2011) - Decent French thriller. Kinda like a cross between Taken and The Chaser but doesn’t end up as good as either of them. 7/10

Paranorman - Watched this with my daughter and we both loved it, in fact i rented it out and i think we watched this 3 times and both laughed a lot. It didn’t look that good in the trailers. 8/10

The Princess Bride - Finally got round to watching this, was funny in parts but not quite what i had been expecting. I did think Gary Elwes was terrific though. Will probably need to rewatch. 7/10

Avengers Assemble - Not really my thing but i can understand what the fuss is all about 6/10

I Spit on your Grave (1978) - Letdown. Poor acting and the whole movie felt slow. I also expected more of a shock factor. Eden Lake is much better. 4/10

Primer - Not sure what really to say about this. I knew what was going on but not how it was happening if that will make sense to anyone who has watched this? If someone was going to watch this id tell them to watch Time Crimes instead. 5/10

Session 9 - Decent Horror/thriller. Had been wanting to watch this for ages although the ending was a bit predictable. Really enjoy watching Peter Mullan. 7/10

Blue Velvet - Excellent stuff! Again a film id been wanting to watch for a while. I preferred this to Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead. Cant wait to watch more Lynch. 9/10

Videodrome - Weird Weird Weird nightmarish s&m type stuff going on with James Woods and Deborah Harry. Great effort from Cronenberg. 8/10

Searching for Sugar Man - Brilliant documentary on Rodriguez, i'll definitely be buying Cold Facts. Perfect film to be ending the weekend with. 9/10

I haven't seen any of the other ones besides the first one, so I have nothing to compare really. But I totally agree with you about the ending. Personally, I was expecting it to be horribly stupid with absolutely no plot and it was not so, so I ended up really enjoying it. Until the last 40 minutes. Then I just stared at the screen with a very unhappy look on my face.

Yeah, you should definitely see the first 3 ones though, best in the series imo, it's cheesy, action-packed, not the best movies out there but they sure are entertaining, and best of all is that they are not TOO exaggerated (a little but that's always good).

Ivan's Childhood -

One of the most compelling, evocative and poetic films I've ever seen about the war. Tarkovsy's camera-work was stylistically top-notch and ahead of it's time, this film is really a masterpiece. 9/10

L'Atalante -

Amazing movie, after 80 years it still has life to spare. 8.5/10

Wild Strawberries -

Bergman's existential film, though as you are taken through the sweet sentience of the aged narrator / protagonist, the film still evokes a bleak lonely reality in our existence. It's warm yet really harsh which makes it another memorable landmark in film. 9/10

"Ah, think of the suffering you're gonna miss. I mean high school? High school-those are your prime suffering years. You don't get better suffering than that", - my favourite line of the movie, and probably the truest too. I could give it a seven if I was generous.

Gangster Squad - 7/10

You know a movie is good when you suddenly start to feel interested about what's going to happen next, even though you're absolutely exhausted and feel like you're going to fall asleep. About twenty minutes in I started to consider going to bed. But I'm still awake.

Lynch's jerking off sanctioned by Cannes. I don't think it's horrible but I don't understand why so many people love everything he does. I watch Wild at Heart the same way I do a MST3K movie. :) Haven't seen the Mr. Green Jeans flick.

Wild at Heart for me is less love and more really really like. I liked Nic Cage doing ex con Elvis, Laura Dern was hot, they had great chemistry, enough weirdness to keep me interested, and the Wizard of Oz motif was cool. It is no Blue Velvet, but I will watch it again at a later date.

I'm going to try to remember all the ones I watched the past few days...

Lincoln - 8.5/10

I liked this movie a lot, the acting was impeccable and I liked how they showed the atleast somewhat reality of the politics, that he more or less bought and/or connived votes, which is probable. I am not a history buff so I can't cite specific examples of what is inaccurate, but I think even if it's not exactly correct, it showed the scenario in a likely valid way. I think it could have been done better, it was your basic historical film, and I thought there would be more of the rest of his terms instead of the narrow time period they focused on.

Silver Lining Playbook - 8/10

I loved the movie until the end, and ONCE AGAIN, it ruined it for me that it was a happy-ever-after ending. And it made them seem a little too normal for the circumstances. But I liked how it was different and used a volatile personality type in terms of a love story. But that's ultimately what it was, a love story.

Jim Gaffigan's Mr Universe - 9.8/10

I laughed so hard my jaw hurt. The only thing was he only used a few subjects (most of course were something to do with food), so at a couple points I was like "really? can we try something different?" but like I said he kept being funny so it worked. I have been trying to figure out for a while now what makes him so funny, and I don't know, all I know is he makes me laugh so friggin hard.

The Impossible(2012) - 10/10

I don't know how accurate this movie is, but it made me cry about 5+ times through out the movie. The cinematography was absolutely superb (#empirerecords lol). It felt so intense and real during the disaster. It's a little difficult for me to believe her wounds were THAT bad, but even if they weren't it's still amazing. The acting was great, Naomi Watts and Ewan MacGregor are two of my favorite actors. Tom Holland was fantastic, he is definitely going to be a star. I think it has been the most moving picture I've watched. The "wow" factor worked on me for sure.

Walk the Line - 9/10

Rewatch. Okay, so I know I've been complaining about love stories, and I know that this is a love story. But this one makes it so by the end of the movie even the worst cynic is just saying "just do it already!". Plus, Jaqouin Pheonix (sorry I can't spell his name) does an amazing acting job, and the extremes we see through the movie in every sense of all of the actors is done so well and so smooth it takes you on a ride you can really enjoy. I knew there was a reason I wanted to buy it, and I remembered after watching it. I'm not a huge Johnny Cash fan, and I think they left out a lot of his music that's a lot more country/folk which is less publicly appealing, so that's kinda messed up, but it worked for me because they featured the kind of music of his I like.

Crazy Heart - 6/10

This was in a double pack with Walk the Line. It was utterly disappointing. The only thing good about this movie was Jeff Bridges acting, the amount of whiskey being consumed, and some of the music. My score is generous due to the acting by Mr. Bridges. I didn't finish it, so let me know if I missed something important. I couldn't do it, I wasn't paying attention because I was so bored with it.

Daytime Drinking - 8/10

I watched this a while ago but never got to reviewing/rating it. Korean movie, first live one I've seen. I didn't particularly like some of the acting, but maybe because it was in a completely unfamiliar language. I really liked the directing, even while it was unexciting and monotone it still kept my interest, and I think the lack of soundtrack in many places made the shots more beautiful. The story was a bit slow, still, and like I said the acting was, in my opinion, pretty horrible for the most part. But I liked it, and for me to like a subtitled film means a lot.

I am sorry I underestimated the hype when it was in theaters, because this is a movie that definitely needs to be screen on a big screen in a dark room (preferably while you're on some kind of substance). It could have done without the narration and that entire aspect where there are two people talking about the story. Completely unnecessary and in my opinion, detrimental to its effect. Also, a little too much "God" concept in there. And the big disaster is basically my biggest fear ever. Other than that I loved it. And I haven't looked it up yet but I'm pretty sure the animals were mostly digital, in which case, holy moley they did an amazing job.

Kill Bill VOL2 - 8/10

Alright, FINE, I gave it 8/10. I don't think its that good, but its better than 7.5. I know some people may have been waiting for this and here it is. Admittedly, it is much better than I remember it being. I definitely mixed up Vol1 and Vol2 into one big movie memory. But still, it's not that great. I loved the beginning. I think the entire thing should have been done as a black and white/noir film. But it wasn't. I also loved the kung-fu homage. But, and correct me if I'm out of line, it seems like he Americanizes it too much, so it's almost like making fun of it. I can see QT wanting to not try and do a kung-fu, because it wouldn't do the old genre justice, but at the same time, it was over done. I hope Djano Unchained isn't like this because I'm looking forward to seeing it. Anyway, it wasn't bad. Uma Thurman was better in it than I remember her being in any other movie I've seen. I'd say - pretty good movie.

Same rating conflict as the previous. I liked it, I liked the dialogue especially. I liked the way the story moved. I liked the idea. But it was still kinda boring to me. I zoned out a couple times. ^I want to see Cloud Atlas so bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Young Frankenstein - 9/10

I loved it, and it made more recent Mel Brooks movies make more sense. Very funny, Marty Feldman and Terri Garr were great. Incidentally, I also saw..

After Hours - 9/10

Extra credit for the fantastic Scorsese directing. I missed the first few minutes of the movies, so at first the ending was like "huh?", but then I checked it out, and it worked much better. Still think the ending was a little weak, but for a comedy it was great. Overall great picture, just hilarious in all ways. Great acting also.

Brazil - 8.5/10

I love this movie, but I have to say I find it a bit boring and slow moving sometimes. The whole concept it great, but it's just, as said, slow and boring sometimes. And weird. But hey, its Terry Gilliam.

Planet of the Apes - 9/10

If directing/shooting had been a bit better, I would have rated it higher. Awesome movie!!!! Timeless. Charlton Heston is so dramatic. And the ending is obviously a set up for a sequel, otherwise it would have been a horrible ending in my opinion. I wish I could give it a higher rating, honestly.

Started Persona tonight, buuuuuut I have to fix my DVD player remote in order to get the subtitles on. But I definitely see what the hype is about. Beautiful first 5 minutes.

^See, if it wasn't such a "classic" which the ending has been revealed in popular culture so much its impossible not to know, then maybe. Also, if for some reason I didn't already see that whole thing coming (which even if I hadn't already known the background of the story I think I would've figured it out), then maybe. But other than that, it was pretty un-climactic in my opinion. I had the same problem as I did with Chinatown, I knew the big surprise ending because of popular culture, so it kind of ruined the movie. It completely ruined Chinatown, but I still got a lot of enjoyment out of Planet of the Apes, just cause its my kinda movie.

End of Watch - 7.5/10

Not quite the movie of last year i saw a few reviews say, but very good. Much more of a "found footage" feel with the character filming everything which I think detracted a little bit, and was a little slow for the first 45 minutes. After that there was plenty action, and a nice arc with the cartel, and a scary depiction of being a cop in America.
Quite emotional at the end as well :(

Saving Private Ryan

Been re-visiting a lot of better known movies lately. This was one that I didn't have particularly fond memories of but seems to have got better with age. One of the best movies I've ever seen ... Surrounded by two ridiculous scenes where Spielberg tries to manufacture emotion. This may be the movie where he started trying to won Oscars rather than tell great stories. Anyway, I chose to ignore the false emotion on this occasion.

Whisper of the Heart

I've only started watching Japanese animation movies in the last few months but what I've noticed is that there is a huge variety of styles. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the fantasy elements used a lot by Miyazaki - I like those movies but don't love them. However, I love the movies that are just telling a story that could be done with live action - because the animation brings an extra element of beauty to the movies. Grave of the Fireflies was just a stunning film and now this is another one that amazed me from start to finish. Basically it's a love story for teenage girls but like so many of these films, it's so much more than that. It has an interesting story, likable characters, emotion and is visually amazing. Add to that the brilliant use of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" as a story element and the whole thing is genius.

10/10

Kikujiro

Just getting into Takeshi Kitano movies and loved Hana-bi. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me. Seems a bit ego driven - a writer/director who thinks "hey, I'm a funny guy, I can carry a two hour comedy on my own". Was too much slapstick humour that was occasionally amusing but never really funny and what wasn't slapstick was all pretty mean spirited - just Kitano essentially being unpleasant to people.

The Amazing Spiderman

Now first off I would like to say is that Spiderman really didnt need a reboot just yet. The movie seemed unnecessary and really didnt bring anything new to the franchise. This is not to say I did not enjoy the movie, the CGI was really good and the acting was good, however if they called the movie Spiderman 4 would have made more sense. I know Sam Rami was originally attached but the studio dumped him and Tobey Maguire but I feel that Tobey Maguire gave a more fragile Peter Parker.

Emma Stone definately but I didnt think Garfield's spiderman was as vunerable as Tobey Maguire's in the first spiderman. I believed it when Tobey Maguire was weak and bullied before he was bitten, whereas Andrew Garfield's version I seemed like he could have smashed Flash before he was even bitten. He didnt show much vunerablility to the character as Peter Parker is in the comics. I think the chemistry between Emma and Andrew was way better than Kirsten and Tobey's though.

So I finally managed to see Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. This film looks so racist,it's like race is all it talks about and that seemed annoying since every problem that characters face are related to their skin color.
The visuals seemed pretty average and nothing special.Sometimes when I watch the film, even if I dislike it,I can feel that it's a classic yet this film seemed just...typical.I don't get all the praise. 2.5

I watched Zodiac (2007) last night

9/10 sounds about right. It's a fantastic film, that is well acted and well directed. It has one of the most interesting movie (and real life) villains of all-time. The not knowing of who the killer is, how many of the murders were actually his, or whatever happened to the killer is quite haunting.

DeeVeeDee
06-22-13, 11:46 PM
^I caught the end of Zodiac on TV one day, definitely made me want to watch the whole thing.

Anyway, my recent viewings...

Django Unchained - 9/10

I'm in a political/philosophical mood tonight, but I won't let that interfere with my rating of this film, cause I loved it. It was just a good f***in movie, plus, I love Christopher Waltz as an actor. And, since everyone compares this to Inglorious Basterds as his greatest films recently, I actually bought Inglorious Basterds (it WAS really cheap but I figured I had to have missed something, maybe like Kill Bill 2, or maybe I was just too drunk to appreciate it last time)

Cloud Atlas - 9/10

It did turn out to be a friggin love story, but again, I will not let that interfere. Especially because it was more than that. I loved this one also. I wanted to watch it again, but I didn't want to get pissed at the love story aspect again. Did I mention I've recently watched....

That's What She Said - 8/10

Not necessarily a quality movie, but I loved it. Thought it was hilarious and wonderfully cynical. Also liked the linear time aspect. But it did make me a little weary about woman-based/directed/starring films. Why's it always gotta be about lesbianism? Beside BabyMama, pretty much every woman-cast film has had at least a good deal of lesbianism, if not a whole lot. Again, don't get me started, not tonight.

Stand Up Guys - 8/10

Loved it, too funny, and had a great reconciliation of a conclusion. Again, not a greatly done movie, but I thought it was so much fun, and it's three of my favorite actors. And it was the first movie to make me laugh out loud in a long time. Why has Pacino not done comedy earlier in his career?? He was HILARIOUS in Jack and Jill.

Gangster Squad - 8.5/10 pending

I fell asleep so I didn't get to see the ending :( But I will say I loved the cinematography, and Ryan Gosling just gets hotter and hotter. Sean Penn was fantastic as usual. Gotta say, I'm getting a little annoyed with Emma Stone being in every other movie I watch these days, can actors get played out like pop songs do? But she is good, so I can't really complain. Anyway, the only down side of the movie is it didn't build, but like I said, I didn't see the ending, so that really makes a difference. But I definitely want to see it again.

The Master - 8.8/10

I should've reviewed this right after I saw it. As others have said, the acting was incredible. And PT Anderson did his thing. The whole thing was great, but for some reason I think it lacked something. It wasn't quite there. Usually, that means it needs a re-watch :)

Man of Steel - 6.5/10

I didn't really understand it, although I could try to come up with flimsy ideas about the digitization of film and entertainment, but that didn't matter too much to me. This was all about the images and sounds put on screen, and there were many that will stick with me for a long time. Denis Lavant as the shape-shifter in the lead role is amazing, and the accordion interlude pictured above is one of the many great scenes. I definitely want to re-watch, not so much to understand better (although I wouldn't mind that), but to let the scenes wash over me again.

I loved Holy Motors, I think this quote from Roger Ebert on Mulholland Drive can be applied to the film.

"This is a movie to surrender yourself to. If you require logic, see something else. "Mulholland Drive" works directly on the emotions, like music. Individual scenes play well by themselves, as they do in dreams, but they don't connect in a way that makes sense--again, like dreams. The way you know the movie is over is that it ends. And then you tell a friend, "I saw the weirdest movie last night." Just like you tell them you had the weirdest dream."

This is a great movie from historical and visual perspectives. However, it has some real weaknesses in terms of some of the acting and parts of the story (too many tragedies). Definitely worth watching though - a relatively realistic look at the struggles of a family during some major events in China last century.

I watched Man of Steel, and I have to say that I was honestly impressed with how the movie was, everybody and their mother ranted and raved regarding the movie, but I couldn't find myself doing it. There were momentous downward spirals about the movie such as the excessively slow-pace and Superman's relatively dry performance, but honestly, I enjoyed it. I wouldn't call it a great film, but I'd put it above Thor, Captain America, Hulk, and last two Iron Man movies.

Very dark movie filled with moments of beauty. Found the whole thing very tense - especially during the extended quiet periods.

A very interesting film following the rules of the "Dogme 95" manifesto (it's a special kind of low-budget with a few extra rules). It's about racism, but it handles it well, so it's not depressive or anything. It's really fresh.

Why does this movie get so much praise? I mean, really. I thought I was going to love it, but I am hugely disappointed. Yes, the acting was good, but I didn't find the movie funny, nor entertaining. Very overrated imo, and I quite like Kubrick. I thought 2001 and A Clockwork Orange were both great. Dr. Strangelove, on the other hand, I would probably rate 5/10. But I really don't know what to make of it right now.

http://www.criticker.com/img/films/posters/Spirited_Away.jpg

This is a movie that I am sure I would have instantly fallen in love with, had I only seen it seven or eight years ago. I remember seeing Kiki's Delivery Service when I was about 12 or 13, and back then I considered it to be a guilty pleasure of mine. Had I seen it today, I probably would've felt the same way as I did with Spirited Away.
I am not going to give a definite rating for now, but Spirited Away is a very good film. I will be honest and admit that I didn't quite enjoy every minute of it, but I decided to let it 'sink in', and after 12 hours of seeing it, I do appreciate it more than I did while I was watching it. I think I will love it if I watch it for a second time.

It's one of the best comedies of all time. It captures the ridiculousness of the Cold War and how the world leaders have completely lost their minds regarding the real essence of existence and life in a brilliantly absurd and dark way. It's one of the best satires ever made about war.
Besides that, it is of course one of the most hilarious films of all time.

It may very well be Kubrick's best film, although I generally consider A Clockwork Orange to be my favorite. Dr. Strangelove has one of the best endings EVER, though. A brilliant piece of black comedy.

Yes, I understood what it captures, and how it does that. But I fail to understand what's so great about it. Why should it receive so much praise for simply being a satire about war? I just don't get it. I am not saying I hated it, I was just extremely disappointed.

Seeing as how I was quite tired whilst watching it though, and I was finding it difficult to concentrate at the same time, I think I'll have to give it another go one day. I feel the same way about Raiders of the Lost Ark, during which I was 70% asleep, 30% awake. I will see them both when I am fully awake one day. But I don't expect to love Dr. Strangelove, probably I'll just appreciate it more.

It receives so much praise because it's so extremely insightful and so outrageously hilarious at the same time.

I guess you should be very awake during this film, though, as it has some very subtle moments of comic brilliance and the purpose of it all may not be very clear if you don't concentrate well enough on it.

Man of Steel (2013) - Zack Snyder

So disappointing. I've liked most of Snyder's films but he really needs to learn the difference between a movie and a video game. Like Sucker Punch, this was like a collection of battles - once completed you move on to the next level. I though that Superman would be re-created as a flawed hero. There was little of that and some of the story elements and scenes were simply dumb (Costner/tornado scene - WTF?).

Action was great but there was too much - almost no "light and shade". My partner said she was bored after half an hour. I was never bored as such because the action was entertaining but wasn't exactly interested either.

4/10 for the action.

I really enjoyed this movie! I've seen it twice now and I liked it just as much the second time as the first. I am glad that I watched it again because I figured out some things that I missed the first time around, like where that ship that the Army found came from. There are three things that bother me: 1) There is no 'Kneel before Zod', dude said that all the time, why would you take that away? 2) The tornado scene, I mean come on! Really Costner? 3) The noise. The action scenes are almost non-stop in this movie so the explosions and implosions continue through out. The acting was solid and the story was good fun, it makes a great introduction movie for the sequils, we all know there will be more than one super hero movies are making way too much money at the moment. So, all in all I give it 4.5

Dust, agree that The Horde is a good entry in the zombie genre. This is actually the only movie I've ever watched on computer and that was from YouTube (I assume it's still there for free). I started watching out of curiosity and was hooked. Good solid fun with several memorable scenes, like a man trapped on top of a car with hundreds of zombies pressing in around him, and an old man using a WWII-era machine gun to mow down zombies. 8/10 (I'm a little more generous here because I'm a zombie junkie)

The Watch (2012)
I've gotten the idea that this film is fairly reviled, and I know that it didn't do good box office. But I enjoyed the heck out of this flick and it's been in fairly heavy rotation on HBO so I've seen it several times. Starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill, with a great role for British comedian/actor Richard Ayoade as one of the four members of the new neighborhood watch. It's not giving anything away (because the previews show it) to reveal that aliens are in the neighborhood and the four guys band together to stop them. There are laughs all the way through. I give it 8/10

I know this is cliche, but Clint Eastwood's character from the Dollars Trilogy for me is the coolest character in all of cinema, and I have not even seen the last film of the trilogy yet. For a Few Dollars More is a lot better than A Fistful of Dollars and Once Upon a Time in the West, and so far I would say it is my favourite western.

The final duel scene was the epitome of cool, I especially loved the soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZvhbkvZ-oY). Leone + Morricone + Eastwood + Lee Van Cleef = epicness.

What Dredd ended up lacking in emotion was made up for a million-times over in-terms of style and pzazz whereas The Truman Show's high-concept story was enough to keep me entertained throughout the majority of the film. A decent performance albeit typical performance from Jim Carrey, and the rest of the cast brought it as well.

I always try to watch movies with a friend of mine every week or so, and usually, what we do is we pick out one movie each and agree on another movie to lead as the "main-event" of the evening. I chose a movie called "The Go-Getter," which ended up being nothing too special albeit a movie with Zooey Deschanel, who almost always is enjoyable. He chose a movie called "The Suicide Room," a Polish movie, and with little surprise, we ended up agreeing that it was godawful. We didn't watch a third movie because it was too late, but I still plan to watch one or two more movies tonight.

When we look back on this film in years to come, its not going to be seen in the "Scorsese's best work" group, as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc, currently are. That being said, its still a very good film. Scorsese explores issues of morality and freedom, perhaps asking us the question, "are we truly free?"

The characterisation of Teddy (L-Caps) is not the strongest, and in a film where all the characters are pretty important, you'd expect it to be stronger. However, the visuals are striking, perhaps some of the best visuals I've ever seen in a Scorsese film.

The film gets 4, but misses out on anything higher, in my opinion, because some moments don't pack the required punch, especially in the "emotional" scenes, where some of it felt just a little contrived.

Still, would recommend.

My attention span was stretched beyond it's breaking point in this monstrous movie of 450 minutes. As result I think that I couldn't fully get it but I noticed that each of the individual sequences were very powerful: Bela Tarr makes each take last on average 170 seconds, compared to 3.5 seconds for the average hollywood action movie and 12 seconds for the average art house movie, these ultra long takes introduce an enormous force and purity into the movie, making each scene look very real indeed.

The scenes where a cat is slowly tortured and killed (for real ) are very powerful and painful to watch. Other scenes are very interesting as well and all have a strong sense of realism that makes the experience feel deeper than nearly every other movie I have watched.

It is rather different from Tarkovsky in that the hungarian director's work is closer to modern art while Tarkovsky's work is more like classical (19th century or earlier) art in tone. A Tarkovsky movie feels like a Schubert symphony while a Tarr film feels more like modern experimental eletronic music -or black metal. Truly a work of modern art, this is a movie that everyone will enjoy (like black metal) but it is also a movie that nobody that sits through it's 450 minutes will ever forget and it is worth watching just for that reason. One wouldn't understand the possibilities of cinema without watching some Tarr, since there isn't anything else like it.

The scenes where a cat is slowly tortured and killed (for real ) When reviewed, Tarr said the cat didn't get hurt during this scene and it was only a gimmick, as well as the rain and wind blowing the trash - it's all artificial, but looks very real.

Tarr film feels more like modern experimental eletronic music -or black metal. In terms of music, I'd rather compare him to dark ambient or drone music. These genres may be hard to listen to and grasp for average mainstream music listener (accordingly mainstream film watcher), but once you get into it, you discover its sheer brilliance and supposedly boring and monotonic music reveals a lot of things you didn't hear before.

Well, I really dislike black metal, but I loved this film. :) You probably didn't find your kind of black metal yet. Black metal has lots of subgenres that differ a lot. Try some blackgaze with a lot of dream-like vocals juxtaposed to harsh screaming or growls (I pressume you don't like shrieking vocals thus you don't like bm, but I may be wrong). Try some of these artists: Agalloch, Alcest, Les Discrets, Amesoeurs, Gris, Deafheaven, Lantlôs, Cold Body Radiation.

Some of them have clean vox on certain tracks/albums.

Beautiful Sunday (1998) - Tetsuya Nakashima

This is the third Nakashima movie I've seen. He's quickly becoming a favourite - largely due to every film being completely different but still somewhat fascinating. Confessions was a beautifully dark movie about a teacher taking revenge on the students responsible for her daughter's death whilst Kamikaze Girls was a much lighter look at the friendship between a girl obsessed by 18th century France and a biker. Beautiful Sunday is a very slow and sparse look at the residents of a unit block who all seem disconnected from each other and society. Didn't like it as much as the other two but still good.

Close Up (1990) - Abbas Kiarostami

Fantastic movie. Kind of a documentary, kind of a drama. True story with the actual people involved recreating the events mixed with real court room footage. I started off being a bit bored but the characters, the story and the emotion just grew throughout the movie. By the end I was completely wrapped up in the story.

Ozu has this amazing ability to create simple slice of life films that are absolutely beautiful and a pleasure to watch.

I didn't liked it. The animation was ugly and the movie was boring. Although I can see why some people like it because it's very artistic.

I only rank it 4 out of 5 because I didn't understood all the film, but I still had a great time watching it. It's definitly a movie I will rewatch and probably end up liking more. Giving a movie that I didn't understand the ending at all 4 out of 5 is pretty impresive. The music in this movie is beautiful
