Disney's Pocahontas.

7/10. I don't think I've seen this one when I was a child because it was completely new to me. It offered some social commentary and I liked that she chose her own people instead of some foreign white dude but I'm guessing the movie was too short to really flesh out their characters

Seeing how there was a lot of talk about Hidden Figures here's what I wrote about in my review:

Hidden Figures (2016)

Director Theodore Melfi serves up a potpourri of drama, romance, light comedy, social commentary, history and biography all tastefully rolled up in one palatable movie called Hidden Figures.

Who knew that NASA employed woman in 1960 as human computers...and segregated them to a small part of the NASA complex? You can learn a lot from this film...and have fun while doing it. While the topic of segregation and civil rights is important and the movie's main focus is to pay homage to these black women pioneers who helped to break the color barrier...the film also doesn't forget to entertain along the way.

https://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=31196&stc=1&d=1496866609

I liked the lead Taraji P. Henson, I had never seen her before but she had a likable on screen presences and had me rooting for her to get fair treatment and to find love and respect.

Octavia Spencer (The Help, 2011), has a strong willed character that audiences will be rooting for. Janelle Monáe, is the other part of this trio, she has less screen time and there forth less character development. She's known as a model and singer, but did appear in (Moonlight, 2016).

It was good to see Kevin Costner as the driven but fair minded head of NASA's Friendship space launch program. And for an antagonist we get the capable Kirsten Dunst.

Hidden Figures is not ground breaking or hard hitting, but it delivers where needed. Oh BTW history shows John Glenn was a cool guy! as he insisted on having the flight trajectory math checked by the real Katherine Johnson played by Janelle Monáe, thus giving her the credit she was do!

I didn't even know there was a sequel. How smoking was Helen Mirren
RED (2010)

Red was the most enjoyable/entertaining movie I'd seen since True Lies (1994). I liked every minute of it, especially the scenes with Mary-Louise Parker. And yes, Mirren is gorgeous-- especially to us older guys.;)

The sequel in 2013 was almost as good. Thankfully there is another sequel ("Red 3"?), supposedly to be released this year. I don't know what's holding them up. I'm very much looking forward to it.

The Spiral Staircase (1946) 4 Thank you, SilentVamp for recommending this from the 40's Countdown. I've really enjoyed this movie directed by Robert Siodmak who's work I've enjoyed and this one is now added to that list.
A good thriller regarding a serial killer who kills women with disabilities. Some of the visuals used for the murders were quite impressive in their insinuations and the cast was great, across the board. A standout was Elsa Lanchester. (shown above) There is one particular scene where she pilfers a bottle of brandy and the smile she has, which she quickly hides, just made me burst out in laughter.

It was nominated for 3.

Best Picture
Best Supporting Actress
Best Adapted Screenplay

Hidden Figures was a 2016 Best Picture nominee and Octavia Spencer was nominated for Supporting Actress...I can see Spencer's nomination but I really don't understand the Best Picture nomination.

That's really sad. Ah well, maybe I shouldn't be surprised considering what horrible performances actually do win Oscars, like Russel Crowe in Gladiator.

Just look at how many Oscars Meryl Streep has.

It (2017) (Dir. Muschietti) 2
https://i.imgur.com/009FiLv.jpg?1

The hype does this movie zero favors. Cary Fukunaga walking away from the project was a red flag I never should have ignored. Having watched part 1 of the mini series last week, I wasn't ready for dubstep, dutch angles, and editing I haven't been mistreated to since those "screamer" videos were popular around 2007. That isn't to say there aren't characters worth rooting for, but they aren't substantially different from their counterparts in Stranger Things or even Super 8. The major difference being vulgarity more reminiscent of a King adaptation like Stand by Me.

Sophia Lillis gets a lot of room to shine as Beverly Marsh, the most well defined character of the bunch. The film adequately portrays the sexual awakening she provides the boys, thankfully stopping short of the infamous scene from the novel. Despite Ben's relationship with Georgie still getting a lot of push, it feels rather obligatory, paling in comparison to Beverly's relationship with her father. A tasteful shot of Beverly with her back to the camera, baffled by the wide selection of tampons before her feels strangely out of place in a movie this loud and flagrant.

Regardless of my feelings, I encourage seeing it for yourself if only to support R rated horror being mainstream again. I think this falls short of part 1 of the mini series, a bit too shiny and obnoxious for my liking, but part 2 shouldn't be hard to out do.

A mass post of a few flicks I have watched recently.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/Teen_Titans_The_Judas_Contract.jpg

I have been on a bit of a DC animated flick binge. Gotta get my DC fix in since the DCEU kinda sucks as a whole. Lucky for me these are some damn entertaining movies. I have not read the original comic (at least not yet), but I know enough about it to know the main story and a few differences in the movie. Either way, very enjoyable.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b9/Batman_and_Harley_Quinn_movie_poster.jpeg

Had the Blu Ray on pre-order. A heavy emphasis on comedy but still plenty of fight scenes. Though I admit why it required Harley Quinn to remember that fire works really well against plants was kinda lame, the pluses HEAVILY out weight any gripes I have.

4

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/df/Batman_Bad_Blood_cover.jpeg

Expanding the Bat family by two. We bring in Batwoman and Batwing to help Dick and Damion rescue Bruce. The plot and cast was a tad over stuffed, but the pay off was there. Worth the while.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9a/Justice_League_Dark_film_Blu-ray.jpg

Now this was a lot of fun! I got to see a bunch of lesser known and lesser adapted comic characters fight the big bad of the movie. It was cool to see John Constatine as a closer adaptation of his comic persona. Now I admit I know next to nothing about the guy, but this movie makes me curious to check out some of his back issues. And it was nice to see the likes of Zatanna, Deadman and Etrigan in a much bigger focus then in previous series and movies. And they kept Etigan as a rhyming Demon too. Which was nice. Sure the sheer amount of English cockney slang seemed like the voice actor was trying to over compensate so he could hammer in the "yes I am British" thing. But minor gripe aside, this was a great flick.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/35/Double_indemnity.jpg

I know I have said that Kiss Me Deadly is my favorite Noir; I have to change my mind and say Double Indemnity is. I admit while I still love Kiss Me Deadly, Double Indemnity I just seem to return to more. It might not have the Cold War themes of Kiss Me Deadly, but it does have a lot of the other Noir tropes I love. Amoral characters, ordinary people who make terrible choices and suffer for it, the morality lesson feel of the flick, and the movie was a very tightly woven plot written by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler himself.

Great writing, great direction, and carried by great actors leads to what I have to say is my personal favorite Noir film.

https://www.rightstufanime.com/images/productImages/704400016561_anime-shimoneta-complete-series-blu-ray-dvd-primary.jpg?resizeid=3&resizeh=600&resizew=600

Not a movie, but I something I watched nonetheless. My brother is bigger into anime then I am, and him knowing my tastes and sense of humor, suggested I watch this and he let me borrow his copy of the series. After my long road trip from south Florida back to north Texas, I REALLY did not want to go out and do much of anything. So I popped this in and binged watched it. I thought it was damn funny. Imagine a world where a social movement that marries the uptight and using politics to enforce morality of the Religious Right is married with the language policing, data mining, and humor neutering of the Social Justice Left. You get a world where not only is everyone monitored by electronic devices, Japan has become even more sexually repressed then it already is, and the telling of a saucy joke or even bad language is outlawed. Even daring to do so gets someone arrested or branded a terrorist. Leading to the main hero getting caught up in dirty joke terrorism

A series whose humor is bluer then the state of California, follows the life of Tanukichi Okuma bring dragged into ero-terrorism (never knew sex terrorism to be a thing) by Ayame Kajou (aka Blue Snow). They do heir best to essentially trigger the powers that be by doing everything from spreading filthy humor to distributing hand drawn pornography. All while attending a very prestigious "public morals" high school.

I admit I am not big on high school based anime unless there is a unique twist or gimmick. This one certainly counted. And I will admit even I was taken aback by just how crude the series could be. But it was funny as hell, so no matter there. It was worth my while.

Samoan Lawyer, so glad that you liked The Ninth Configuration! It's definitely a movie that improves on subsequent viewings, although the first viewing gives the surprises. But seeing it several times can clue you into why they included this scene or that scene, which, after several viewings over the years, I'm still surprised that I might have missed. This is what made me a huge fan of Stacy Keach, so much in fact that the wife and I went to see him in a couple of plays in Dallas in the 90's, and he was excellent.

Ms. M, and Dani, loved reading your back-and-forth about The Room. Wow, what a stinker. Have you heard that they've made an actual movie (as opposed to the real The Room) about the making of the movie? :D Well, here's the first trailer (but there's another on YouTube):

Well, for some reason, the link didn't work but I will try again!

EDIT: Well, I had to go for the second trailer and we'll see if it links. Warning, it has what looks like nudity but it's Franco nude from the side with no naught bits showing. Then they show what is supposed to be his sex scene under the covers with "Linda," but they talk about his aim, as if he's really supposed to be having sex with her in real life. Don't know if it's true, but since I'm posing this for you, Ms. M, and Dani, I thought I'd warn you. Anyway, if the link works, the movie looks almost as hilarious as the bad original. Almost. :)

No Man's Land (1987)
Director: Peter Werner

https://i.imgur.com/VHj5IAZ.jpg

Surprisingly, this film doesn't get caught up in the usual dated mess that a lot of films do from the 1980's. Sure, there's yuppy women wearing pant suits, dancing at exquisite parties, and a lot of very well composed boy's haircuts on display, but I don't think that's a bad thing if it's shown in the right light.

No Man's Land is essentially a blueprint for Fast and Furious movies except it's not very fast paced. Aside from a couple of chase scenes, the pace is medium, to quote Adam Sandler, referring to a shampoo bottle up the ass. When a rookie undercover cop befriends a rich car thief, their friendship becomes a working relationship, and the thief's beautiful sister becomes the object of the undercover cop's affection.

That's about it. Guess the rest and you'd be correct.

This is photographed really nicely and the lighting, costuming, locations and acting are all in check. I enjoyed this one. I had seen it back in the day and had a feeling it'd hold up. It did.

Another thing that caught me off guard was the music. Again, the score from Basil Poledouris is indeed a product of the 80's but is too smart to trap itself in a corner with silly themes. The instruments are almost rock/fusion with a nice medium sized wobbly sounding china cymbal adding a level of sophistication that dials the quality up some notches. He also employs some sequenced arpeggiations that accompany the action scenes. It's all handled very nicely. The musical score is stylish and more than competent.

I'd see this one again down the road. It's not a great film or anything, but it's cool and I liked it. I also saw it on Kino's beautifully transferred blu ray, so I think it's important to see it on the right format to really get it, because it is a stylish film without shouting at the top of its lungs that is has style. No Man's Land: "I HAVE STYLE!!!!"

That never happens.

On a final thought, I liked the chemistry between Sheen and Sweney's characters as Thief and Cop. They played their parts well enough to allow the ending to have some impact, and as I got to the last frozen frame of the movie, I realized I had just seen a good movie.

I have no idea who any of these characters are or have any clue as to their backstories (haven't read the manga or seen the anime series) but this film is so inherently likable that it didn't really matter, the characters won me over soon enough and its just a fun time with a few scenes that absolutely slayed me. This would have certainly made me watch the TV series if it wasn't 200 episodes but I'll probably watch the other 5 films.

A rather obscure noir, at least I had never heard much about it. It has an A list cast including director Otto Preminger who also directed Laura (1944).

Jean-Luc Godard in 1963, named it the 8th best American Sound film.

Myself, I thought it was middle of the road with uninspired acting and a pot boiler script that was hard to swallow at times. Though the court room scene with the sleazy lawyer, was pretty nifty.

I found this movie because it was an answer in the movie questions thread. After looking it up, I decided it was worth a try due to a 4/4 rating from Ebert and having Arthur Penn as the director. This was not one of Penn's best but I did enjoy it. It's about four friends at the end of high school, 3 guys and the kooky girl they all love, and the direction their lives go in from then on. The cast could have been better. Craig Wasson was the only actor I knew, and I only know him as the dude from Body Double. Still, the characters were pretty bland and I don't know if a better cast could have improved things that dramatically, and this needed exceptional characters/performances in order to be an exceptional movie. The soundtrack is also pretty lame for something set from the 60's to the 70's. That doesn't mean to say I wasn't interested throughout, and it does have it's moments. My wife enjoyed it about the same as I did.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 actually wasn't as bad as how I remembered it. Don't get me wrong, it definitely falls apart in the end and it was never great to boot, but it isn't one of the "awful Elm Street" movies that they did as the series carried on.

SAW IV is a heinously dull and bland film, strewn together badly. I've re-watched up to this point now, and SAW 1-3 were both enjoyable, flawed films, this is the first truly bad film of the series. And, if memory serves me correct, there's more soon to come.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Well, color me surprised because I thought this would be a Tim Burton movie where everything was oddball and the mood would be kooky from beginning to end. Not that I don't like that about his movies. It's what sets him apart from other directors and that tends to be polarizing for some people. But I enjoy most of his stuff. This one falls in the category of "oddball characters with heart" or "weirdness with feeling" that resemble his films like Edward Scissorhands or Big Fish. It's not exactly like those but it just has the "feel" of those in my opinion.

Jake (Asa Butterfield) is concerned that his grandfather (Terence Stamp) is losing his mind with ravings about someone being after him. This is the same grandfather that regaled Jake as a young lad with bedtime stories about a "special school for different children" and monsters who, if they found the same kids, would eat their eyeballs. Of course, all this turns out to be true. This is all established fairly early in the movie so it's not really a spoiler. Jake ends up going to Wales with his dad (Chris O'Dowd) at the behest of his psychologist and finds the special home his grandfather told him he visited during WWII. He's greeted by the headmistress, the enigmatic Miss Peregrine (Eva Green), who welcomes him and introduces him to all the "Peculiars," the children with special powers who are forced to remain in hiding at a Gothic mansion. All are unique but Jake is smitten with Emma (Ella Purnell), who is very light on her feet...in fact, she floats and has to wear special weighted boots so she doesn't drift away. Meanwhile, there's of course a "big bad" played by Samuel L. Jackson, who wants to kill all the Peculiars and of course, consume their eyeballs, which he believes when enough are ingested, he'll gain immortality. He has a cabal of people like him who have the same goals and they are the "Hollows," who sport white eyeballs, due to a failed experiment long ago.

Yes, it's compared to the X-Men, which is unfair because any story with similarities might be compared to the other, but this one is only surface-level. Tim Burton movies are definitely not like Marvel movies. The special effects are pretty super, with the requisite Burton creatures that comes after the kids, and these monsters look somewhat like Jack Skellington, his "hero" from The Nightmare Before Christmas, which he produced and created the characters for but didn't direct. Still, they are properly "Burtonesque" for fans. In the end, the movie is one with lots of fun but also a big heart that leaves you feeling great.

Where Book Of Shadows went in a complete new direction, this really is The Blair Witch Project turned up to 10 and I appreciate that, I don't get where all the hate comes from for this movie, I also like that it has components from Book Of Shadows, I don't think I will watch this another time though as it is so damn scary

You can read more on my Netflix Renaissance (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=48498&page=3) thread, but Chopper (2000) was awesome. I love The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) and Killing Them Softly (2012) (unfortunately for the latter, my opinion is not the popular one), so it was nice to see Dominik's cinematic roots.

There's a lot to like about Blue and I'd say it's the more adventurous of the three but for me Red was easily the superior as it much more fitted my personal taste and aside from the very ending I struggled to find fault with it tbh. White is clearly the runt of the litter imo, probably not aided by it being more absurd and comedic, but even then it was enjoyable enough in it's own way.

I've seen it several times. Most recently within the past 10 years. I really like the film, but the ending is like a slap in the face....shocking, that is. I always want to see them get away.

In the '40s Mitchum didn't often play a sleaze, even one who slid into being a sleaze. Bad guy, tough guy, strange guy even; but never a weak guy. And when you have strong character like he had, you get a deodorant named after you...:D

It's pretty bizarre structurally in that its more a collection of individual scenes featuring the same protagonist more than a cohesive narrative but the sets and set pieces are beyond incredible and it makes every scene an absolute delight. Very fun and creative.

Nocturnal Animals

(Tom Ford)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b0/Nocturnal_Animals_Poster.jpg

3

The first thing I said to myself as this bizarre film opened was; "did I accidentally put on a David Lynch film?" To say that Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals felt 'Lynchian' might be an understatement. While the trademark weirdness isn't there per se, the tone and overall feel cannot be denied.

The film is split into three parts, all told simultaneously. The first part is current day, where Susan is a wealthy art gallery owner who receives a manuscript from her ex-husband, Edward. The manuscript is titled Nocturnal Animals, his nickname for her. Their split sparked something in him and gave him the drive to write the story. The second aspect of the film is the manuscript itself, which Edward inserts himself in as a character named Tony. Tony, his wife and his daughter are driven off the road. His wife and daughter are then kidnapped and he takes it upon himself to find justice, all with the help of a Detective who seems determined to right those wrongs. Reading this manuscript sparks memories of her relationship with Edward, which is where the third story comes in. Told in flashbacks, we see how these two got together and ultimately fall apart.

Ford's sophomore effort is compelling enough to keep you nervous for everyone involved. The roadside incident is frightening for anyone who is a family man. The image of seeing two men drive off in your car, while your daughter screams for you in the backseat is terrifying. Ford slowly and meticulously builds the tension in this scene, which escalates to the point of no return. We know these men are up to no good, it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. There might be some disconnect with the characters involved a little bit though, as we know that Susan is simply reading a story from her husband. It all depends on how believable Ford makes you connect with these fictitious characters.

It's easy to see how this manuscript was inspired by Edward's real life. Events we discover from their past unfold and give deeper meaning to occurrences from his story. These story elements are devastating enough for Susan to want to communicate with him once more. Her current marriage is a shell of its former self and she realizes this. This manuscript shows up at a particular time to have Susan question her decisions and ultimately reveal how superficial she is.

Stellar performances from Gyllenhaal, Shannon, and Taylor-Johnson elevate this film a bit. Amy Adams is one of two anchor points, but she is mostly seen just being depressed while reading this manuscript. A tad underwhelming for me, especially with how good everyone else is. With a tight script and meticulous directing, Ford compliments the actors, but I can't help but ask myself if I card enough for these people. Yes, Gyllenhaal's story is depressing and I want to see him succeed, but we all know it's a story within a story. Adams garners no sympathy from me and bits of the story left me a little confused. Ford goes for an anticlimactic ending that feels ominously ambiguous. I wanted an answer or two and ended up with more questions.

Noir with a decent story but one I thought relied a bit much on coincidence. It is tight and entertaining, but it is mediocre for noir visuals and dialogue. Stars Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake make the movie.
I agree with your remarks. I've seen the film several times, and have enjoyed it each time. But truthfully Ladd's acting range was wincingly poor here. Reportedly it was his first major roll, and it shows. He got better as he went along, turning in a pretty good performance in Shane, although Jack Palance blew him out of the water with his talent.

One could see the beginnings of the chemistry between Ladd & Lake. Veronica Lake had one of the great screen names; and her beauty and appeal covered up her modest talent.

But I can watch almost any '40s/'50s noir, so it would have to be pretty bad before I wouldn't recommend it...;)

One of Peckinpah's best known movies, when he still had his mind. He almost single-handedly brought gun and knife gore to the popular cinema.. I enjoyed the cinematography and all the new (at the time) special effects. But they spent too long on the misery of the Mexican captive: too long a lead up to the punch line. What a fabulous cast, though!!

Which is a shame, this really is a good noir from the police side of things. Some great shots and done on location, which is pretty new at the time. Absolutely loved Barry Fitzgerald as the leading Homicide detective (which, I kinda always do).
But that terrible, mocking narrator reminded me of those old "How To" document style films for Science class and the like that were filmed in the 50's and 60's and still using them in the 70's when I was a kid. Ruined a really good movie with it.

it's just aggravating when everything else works so well and THAT VOICE is throughout the entire movie. From the opening to the closing and I remember a few times I actually yelled at the screen "Shut th' f@ck up, you're ruining it!"
And when you see it I'm sure you'll come across those moments and know and hopefully chuckle instead of get agitated.
Regardless, it IS very worthwhile and very well done and I'm sure for the rest of it, it'll be something you'll like.

I couldn't believe how bad it was. I get that Wright is having fun and parodying a few movie tropes (I think) but at the same time, you've got to make the movie either interesting or funny if you're doing this. It was neither. The dialogue was absolutely woeful.

You did good, kid.
But you took something
away from me that I love.
You know I got to do the same.

RUN, I'll take care of the cops.

Etc Etc. So hackneyed. That's before we even get into the faux musical scenes where the lead character is dancing around cars, furniture and lamp-posts miming to songs which bring nothing to the actual plot.

Absolutely awful. Probably, given the hype, one of the most disappointing movies of the decade so far.

Anyone who would give his thought about this movie, he would of course focus on what Daniel Day Lewis did. Perhaps I only like this movie because of The Sir. He acted incredibly; even more than incredible. The role he played which everyone should agree that Sir Daniel earned and deserved his second academy award. I don't know for what reason I delayed watching this movie, but I really do regret it. Now despite of all that incredible acting in the movie; we have an excellent plot which caused good suspense, great soundtrack and a fine dilemma.

I have really enjoyed the first half of the movie, maybe more than any other movie. If the movie had continued with that level, it would have reached my top ten inevitably. In the second half of the movie I got a little bored; perhaps the reason was the length of the movie, which may have made me tired a little bit that I couldn't focus, but it didn't last long till the movie pulled me back in. The movie has really some good quotes that are worth being heard. "When I look at people, I see nothing worth liking" and "I drink your milkshake" did really move me.

Went and saw IT again today...

And because I went in with high expectations the first time, I was looking forward to a second watch now knowing the story and how it plays out. I liked and disliked pretty much the same parts, but I also did more and less so, respectively. The flaws meant very little to me this time around, because the movie is so well made. For a mere 30 mil production this looks and feels at least double of that. The cinematography is great, the sound design is cool and the acting is above average all around if not excellent.

Bill Skarsgård... this man delivers a stunning performance. Seeing and hearing him in real life you wouldn't believe he could pull of something like that. He adds so many subtleties to the character that really makes the role. I found out a lot of things after my first watch and this time i could really study him. I thought his hanging lip was prostetic and his weird eyes CG, but I found out he can do both of those things himself. And the way he walks funny, the way he speaks, all adds to how unpredictable IT is and how inhuman it is. Career defining performance, I love it. Wish he would get an Oscar nom. But that's never happening..

Anyways, you can check out my full review if you haven't! https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1771126#post1771126

Suspect, I enjoyed your review and agree with most of it. The beginning reminded me of Lynch also. Tom Ford, for a fashion designer and now a director, was once called on the carpet for objectifying women in his ads, etc. So was he doing some body-shaming at the first? I liked the same three performers you did and felt the book that Adams was reading that we see play out in her mind, with those three performers, was the best part of the movie and was really the core of it. But was Adams also worried that her ex, Gyllenhaal, was out for revenge? I mean, she only noticed the "Revenge" poster on her work wall (that had been there for a long time) until after she was reading the book. Then she began to see things (like the image of Taylor-Johnson on Jena Malone's phone). And lastly, as she sat there at the end, waiting for him to arrive, the time slipped by really slowly. Where we just seeing it from her viewpoint and worry? Or was he really late arriving, maybe standing her up for revenge? I noticed she no longer had her wedding ring from her marriage to Armie Hammer on and was playing with that finger. Maybe she expected her and Gyllenhaal to get back together and that was another reason for touching her bare ring finger?. But still, as you said, the fact that it was left ambiguous was irritating. Was Ford trying to be Lynch with his lack of resolution? If so, he didn't even come close to Lynch's way of doing that.

Thaddy, nice review of There Will Be Blood. I agree about your feeling of Day-Lewis' performance. It wouldn't be the same movie without him as Plainview.

MM, I still haven't seen IT yet but I enjoyed your 2nd viewing remarks. I cannot wait to see this, but I have to for several more days. But that will just pump me up more for it.

Wild Tales movie isn't one story. The movie talks about six short stories, and vengeance is the mutual thing in those six stories. In each of the six stories the movie introduces the protagonist who is a bad character, but somehow the movies shows the protagonist as a good one. The six stories claim that vengeance is a good thing; a good thing that it's worth dying for. Overall, the movie Wild Tales is a savage and surprising one with a few good comedy scenes that you will laugh at, and other tragic scenes that anyone would cry at.

If I hadn't watched this film before, I would of probably turned it off after the first 5 minutes. Seriously, the beginning of this movie is possibly the most obnoxious thing I've ever seen, and knowing now that it was directed by Adam Wingard makes total sense.

Anyways, the first short is "Amateur Night", and just as I remembered it, it was awesome! It almost makes watching this whole film worth it...almost.

After that, we have "Second Honeymoon" by Ti West, who's most notably known for "The House of the Devil". Supposedly, not that many people are into this short, and I really don't understand why, I mean compared to the following segments this is gold. Overall, I really liked it.

Then there was "Tuesday the 17th" and it was easily the worst short I've ever seen in my life, if you thought the first 5 minutes of the film were awful, this is on a whole other level. Saying that I hate this segment is a gigantic understatement.

The follow-up is "The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger", sure it wasn't as terrible as its predecessor, but it was still kinda bad...and stupid.

The final segment is called "10/31/98" and I really liked it for its great use of special effects.

All in all, "V/H/S" was alright (thanks to the 3rd and 4th segments), although, I will definitely come back to the first short (Amateur Night) which I highly, HIGHLY recommend.

Thank God for that second half, because the first half was a PAIN to get through. Awfully forced dialogue and acting, people screaming and shouting and complaining all the way through. And then, as the sugar on top, they introduce a God damn character based on being an annoying pain in the ass, Pesci's character. I'm watching these movies without the 80s nostalgia and cult status, and so far they are not for me... I liked the first better but still it wasn't that great. The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

Yeah, it's another teen angst film and a comedy/drama but the writing, direction, and especially the acting make it really special and well worth watching. Hailee Steinfeld stars as the young girl the title refers to, and her character's name is Nadine. It seems Nadine has been struggling all her life to be accepted, yet being stubborn enough that it makes it hard for people to want to be her friend. When she first starts school though, while throwing a temper tantrum outside the school grounds, she meets a young girl, Krista, who likes her for who she is and they become the closest of pals: in fact, they are the only friends of each other. The older version of Krista is played by Haley Lu Richardson, who does anything to build Nadine up, that is until as a high school student, she begins to crush on Nadine's popular brother, Darian. Which of course blows up Nadine's world. To say she's angry about this and feels betrayed is putting it mildly.

Nadine struggles all her life with jealousy of her older brother, Darian (Blake Jenner), whom she thinks has it so easy in everything. Her mother (played by a great Kyra Sedgwick) makes no bones about saying Darian is her favorite, which really makes Nadine angry. Nadine's drama-queen antics are so funny and well-played out by Steinfeld and she dumps all her heavy woes upon her favorite teacher (or favorite dumpee), Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson, who is super here). The scenes where she comes in and says things like she's going to kill herself (in a comical way) only to have Mr. Bruner dryly comment about how he likes to spend his lunch hour in solitude are comic gold. Yet, before the movie is over, she comes to realize how much she relies on Bruner. In fact, she learns how she's not the only one in the world with problems. But for a long while, she experiences practically every problem a young girl in high school can, especially unrequited love.

This is easily Steinfeld's best movie since True Grit and she really shows her acting skills here. She runs the gamut of emotions in this movie and shows how versatile she can be. Not to say she hasn't been good in various movies since her first one, but this one comes the closest to topping that one. Your appreciation of Steinfeld as an actress will definitely color your opinion of whether or not you like her in this film. But I've always liked her and was really touched by how good she is. It's her movie all the way, despite everyone else being fine also, but Harrelson comes the closest to being her equal. He is so funny in his line-delivery and he is Death Valley-dry with his acting. But you also get to see what anchors him before the movie is over. Mention must be made of Hayden Szeto who plays Erwin, Nadine's classmate who loves her from afar yet she just considers him a friend. But Nadine finds out he has lots of mystery about him that is revealed as the movie proceeds.

Lastly, don't be put off by the "teen angst" shingle hung upon this film---it's really done with a great sense of humor throughout and I found myself laughing and looking forward to whatever happened next in Nadine's little cosmos. Steinfeld should have at least been nominated for a Golden Globe for this. She just keeps growing with her acting talent and I hope her singing career (she really good) doesn't sideline her too much. I look forward to her next film.

Shrew's Nest (2014) (Dir. Juanfer Andres & Esteban Roel) 3
https://i.imgur.com/oFtDW1n.jpg

Shrew's Nest draws on familiar premises from the likes of Repulsion and Misery, steeping them in soap opera hysterics pulled from Spain's telenovelas. Despite how chaotically the narrative unwinds, the story's outline is wieldy and quaint, like an urban legend passing around sleepovers, living in rumors about neighborhood widows, being handed down to a forever renewing crop of impressionable children. Its tone is as manic as its lead, ricocheting between PG-13 chamber drama and macabre giallo, the melodrama and turmoil only kept coherent by a guilted, nervous performance from Macarena Gómez.

Spoor (2017) (Dir. Agnieszka Holland) 3
https://i.imgur.com/e8jt5wN.jpg

I was foolish enough to introduce myself to a storied director like Agnieszka Holland with her most recent work. I'm missing an entire career to help contextualize and understand how she arrived here. I can only say that this isn't a terrible place to be so late in her tenure. Without revealing almost anything, Spoor is a supposed thriller in the realm of Fincher driven by a palpable conviction which manages to preserve the dignity of its point even as it slides off the rails. Its grave concerns and good intentions survive the wreckage by way of a character study relatively unscathed by the dramatic concessions.

A bit of trivia: For the final scene they reenact the planting of the flag which has a statue commemorating it and they had the actual soldiers AND borrowed the original flag from a museum for it. Kinda cool, that.

Oh it is far superior than BFG. Let me know what you think! I'm quite curious.

Oo another surprise, thought I was going to be absolutely bored with it but I enjoyed every minute of this live action version of the original Japanese film. I'm a big fan of Juliette Binoche so loved the scenes between her and Scarlett Johansson.

I saw the original Japanese film back in the late 90s, must go back and have another look while this version is still fresh in the mind.

The Beguiled

7/10 (idk how you guys make those popcorn thingys)

I thought it was alright but it was too short to have any major character development. The dialogue was lacking and the intentions of most characters are never really fleshed out.

Two movies that make me laugh just as hard after multiple rewatches

IKR! And his side eye. And that the Coens wrote that character specifically for him. So so dumb yet lovable.

Just a wonderful rollercoaster train wreck of a ride. Just a TOUCH heavy-handed at times, but so damn close. I thoroughly loved it.

Sofia Coppola's.

Just watched Malèna (2000). Amazing movie. I don't understand why the ratings on MC/RT are so low. 8/10

I saw the one from the early 70's -- it's actually really, really good. Maybe it's just the same title or a bad re-make - most are.

Yup, it's a remake. I heard the 1971 version is supposed to be better so maybe I'll get around to watching it. But the reason i watched it in the first place is because Lost In Translation is one of my favorite movies so I trusted Sofia. It wasn't bad but not mind-blowing either.

I just rewatched the 1971 Beguiled, good stuff, hopefully you can check it out and then you can compare the two.

You asked how to do the popcorn rating, it's easy, check this thread out

He was my favorite director at 17... Enjoy!

I'd go with "A Clockwork Orange" next.

Berlin Syndrome (2017) (Dir. Cate Shortland) 3
https://i.imgur.com/0oiw9o7.jpg

A story of criminal abuse that speaks volumes about possessive relationships, poisonous codependency, and the inner lives of people involved. While the damsel is who the audience roots for and sympathizes with, the captor is the more unique of the two characters, the one that the film attentively unfolds, depicting which forces dictate his behavior. Unfortunately, while the damsel's arch is resolved in a most tidy and conventional manner, the captor's fate is that of a simple villain, defeated, which completely undermines all of the work put into detailing him as a complex being. It's not an undeserved fate, but it's not a satisfying resolution to a film that mostly avoids easy answers.

Its a shame really that it was prejudged by everyone wanting to jump on the white washing hobby horse, especially as the film actually delt with that subject. Not quite as smart as the original I spose but still I think a cut above most modern blockbusters with good performances and some nice visuals beyond merely lifting from Oshii's film.

Saw The Girl of the Train last night, quite hard to rate personally since I normally think these kinds of thrillers put a bit of a limit on how good they can be as there overly plot focused. In this case I do think its taken about as far as possible with Emily Blunt especially giving an excellent performance although she's good enough that I ended up wishing it had been in drama film about alcoholism that didn't look to tie everything up in a nice bow by the end.

Maybe 3.5 or 4 of 5?

That "everyone" wasn't intended to literally mean everyone, just a large number of people, especially when it came to reviews.
