I still need to see this. I've known about since 1986.
I gotta admit, it's funny to see someone with Scarface and Pulp Fiction in their top 10 complain about a movie using the F-word so much. In any case, it seems like most of your problems with it come from having the wrong set of expectations - spy movies definitely don't have to be smart or family-friendly to work (just look at Austin Powers), so be prepared to leave "I thought" at the door and try to see what the movie is doing (or not doing) to defy your expectations. Also, why bring RT into this?
I didn't mean to complain about the use of f words, I just meant that the dialogue just wasn't that funny and seemed a bit lazy. I was just surprised it used the f word so much for some reason. It didn't seem like the kind of movie that would use it that much. I don't know why but when I hear the f word in a movie I wouldn't expect to hear it I get surprised.
I love Austin Powers by the way. That move is much more creative and much more
funny.
I also like the Get Smart movie.
I find Melissa McCarthy to be too fake. I don't believe her characters in her movies are real, she always comes off like a bad SNL skit.

Whiplash
One of the most powerful films I have ever seen and it only took me this long to watch it because I have no interest in Jazz or drums but don't let that stop you, this is a movie about obsession with never stands still and surprises every time and leads to an electrifying climax .. J. K. Simmons is phenomenal, Miles Teller earned it, yeah erm I liked it..

A horny couple who were test subjects in the 70's come back to rape drugged out medical students to death. There's a couple of sick scenes and some decent humor, but it was unengaging and silly. Not bad to watch if you just want to throw in something stupid.
I use to watch a lot of extreme horror and since high school and college, have fallen out of it. Mainly due to time and the wife not wanting to watch any of it.
I might try to get back into it and this could potentially be on the list.

—this philosophy that the traumatic things, the things that have happened to us in our life, they definitely have changed us and changed people, but we tend to make it a pejorative, and say now you are broken. Now you are not whole. Now you are not like us. You are not normal. I'm not sure that's the case. Yes, they are different. And yes, we are different when something traumatic happens to us, but is it less now? Are we less? Or is the different possibly stronger? Is it something more? We tend to think if nothing happens to you and you have the normal life, then everything's perfect, but the Beast is kind of saying you are asleep. ~ M. Night Shyamalan
This is Shyamalan's masterwork.

I'll need to watch this again to wrap my brain about what's going on in this film - but this first viewing was fairly underwhelming. First off, this is definitely one of the most difficult films I've seen in a while, narrative-wise. The seemingly non-linear, elliptical way in which the events are unfolding is just plain befuddling at times - it's like certain parts of the plot are left clear, and others are deliberately blurred from view. Secondly: although it was quite an interesting watch in terms of exploring Denis' cinematic language (this is my first exposure to her work), the story just didn't click with me much at all. A lot of the time I just kept thinking Denis was muddying the waters too much just for the sake it.
Overall, I surely don't want these two hours of my life back but I can't say they were particularly well spent, either.

Thank you. There are a handful of actors who I'd see in anything, and I know a movie made in the 30s is going to be good, if not great... Same with Bogart, who I like even more, though Brando is my favorite, but he was in a few silly movies that I can watch later in life.

Those are the exact movies I haven't seen of his. "Sayonara" as well, but some of them have been hard to find.
As for Cagney, they play so much on TCM, I put an automatic record on any of my favorite directors, writers, actors, and I notice many. I think "Yankee Doodle Dandy" is the only one I didn't finish (I'm not into dance, musicals).
But, I usually try to go chronologically, especially with a director, but some movies are impossible to find, or too expensive.

Poison (Haynes, 1991) 4
http://i.imgur.com/9c8w7Dx.jpg
Todd Haynes ties together three stories centering around people rejected, stigmatized, and crippled by society for their sexual impulses. Three distinct styles/periods of filmmaking are utilized: that of a 50s black and white sci-fi monster movie a la The Fly (1959), that of a documentary employing talking head interviews as well as narration, and a period drama set in the 40s which uses a prison setting and flashbacks to a juvenile disciplinary institution. It's an elaborate construction in which its complexity is kept in check with clear thematic tie-ins across the board and well reasoned, cleanly editing. As a pioneer of the New Queer Cinema movement, Haynes resolutely provides a voice for society's fringes at a volume which can no longer be drowned out.

Street thug Terry Hawkins is released from prison for charges of drug dealing. He now has an idea to start making porn. But since a certain group of clientele are growing jaded in their taste of sleaze. His idea is to make artsy snuff films. The budget is uber low and the flick feels padded at times even with a less then 90 minute run time. The atmosphere is great however and the grainy film footage adds to the visuals. So much so there was a rumor that due to not knowing who the crew were and the alias of director Roger Watkins that this was a legit snuff film. Turns out it is not. Overall the movie is a very dark, grainy, low budget gore and sleaze fest, but it is nowhere near as good as 8mm. I still liked it though.

Few films convey the sense of loss and profound sadness and melancholy as beautifully as this one. The serene natural flow of the images, the thoughtful, contemplative silences, the lingering static-camera shots of beautiful Japanese landscapes and scenes of daily routines - everything about this film works to create an atmosphere of quiet reflection on the mysteries of life, death, love and memory. The central question that torments Yumiko (Makiko Esumi) finds an answer toward the end but will it finally soothe her soul and bring her peace of mind?

This was a pretty crazy movie. Three "handicapped" musicians recruit an author to be their drummer. His handicap is that he can't play the drums. He turns out to be just as screwed up as they are. I would recommend this to people who like movies like Trainspotting and Romper Stomper. Its not similar in plot, but rather in style and energy, but this movie is sicker and more outrageous. It is often hilarious and features some great music. I started to wonder if there was a point to the whole thing, but it was a wild ride.

Lars Von Trier is the human embodiment of manic depression. He is like Sadness in Inside Out, only with less emotional highs and sack he identifies as a Nazi during press tours.
Okay I have only seen two of his movies so far, this and Melancholia. I was not a fan of Melancholia. But this movie was better. That being said I find it a bit difficult to connect to Von Trier. The film was by no means bad. The cinematography is great and the performances are spot on. I just feel I can't connect. Either that or I got distracted by noisy neighbors. Which they were. Either way this rating will do for now. I will revisit this movie at a later date and I will try the Nymphomaniac movies in due time.

Night of the Creeps (1986)
Director: Fred Dekker
Starts out great and then the 1980's music almost completely buries the film into pure corn. Luckily, Tom Atkins shows up soon after. Some decent dramatic moments are realized with the acting by all involved and some really funny little moments involving a night janitor, but the movie worked better back when it was released. I'm still a fan of the film for nostalgia at this point. It is cringe worthy a lot of the time, but I can still get through it. The blu ray presentation with supplements and 2 commentary tracks with cast and director really help the overall presentation. Without these special features on home video, I would not be as big a fan as I am.
I think to really appreciate this movie, you need some time off from watching it once or twice a year. Wait 5-10 years and then revisit it.

OK after a great chinwag with Monnom and seeing the glowing ratings in this thread about Split yesterday I tweaked my mindset and had a rewatch, concentrating more on the score which I thought was very clever in setting the atmosphere of dread. Still a bit irked the only decent character of the lot the Dad, got killed so early
Not one other character was likable as far as I'm concerned, especially the two friends/couple/whatever they were.
I double my amount of poppycock, maybe even push it half a cup, simply for McAvoy who was outstanding. The rest of the acting not so much, although I must say M Night has improved since 6th sense but he'll never win best actor at the oscars. That's just a nitpick, though.
So much appreciation to Monnom and the other reviewers who loved it to give me a kick to have a rewatch. I find opposing PoVs super helpful in giving me fresh eyes.

Repo Man - 1984
Repo Man can be taken at face-value for what it is, a weird dark comedy with some sci-fi elements. But, if you want to dig deeper in to what they were trying to say about society, you will be very pleasantly surprised. This movie goes against pretty much everything what the cookie-cut movie factory Hollywood has become and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more. I could watch this movie over and over and I’ll probably come away with something new each time and that’s why I love movies.

The White King
A vision of a totalitarian society run by a brutal dictatorship in the near future told through the eyes of an undesirable boy who's father is taken away, the core goal of this system appear to be a return to nature but what sounds like a fine idea is enforced with all the brute force of Hitler's reich and all the pomp. Some kind of "soft" racial policy is hinted at too, although the one black family are treated no different from anyone else, their singularity seems pointed at, then there was the single "ss" style black soldier.. it all felt token, the largest poster you see with the national symbol next to a smiling Asian woman seems to declare "We are not racist", it seemed ambiguous but nothing is mentioned.. they could actually be the films token non white people to suggest these fascists are not racists. In any case it all felt quite contrived and lack luster with weak performances, it had it's moments but it won't be remembered by me.

This is not only the third installment in the Schizophreniac series, it is also a direct sequel to the last movie I saw, The Last House on Dead End Street. Terry Hawkins is played by Jim Vanbebber and John Giancaspero returns as Harry Russo.
The movie is shot on video as opposed to film (it is a Ron Atkins movie). The movie is pretty cheap but it is very unique and pretty weird. Not weird in a Lynchian sense but pretty loopy. Don't go in for a great movie or even one of good quality with these movies. I mean it is shot on video for f**k sake. But they are at the very least a unique experience. The only reason I even got these movies on DVD is because of Diamanda Hagan and he reviews of the series. Worth the while if you are a fan of hers.

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (Murphy, 1995) 4
http://i.imgur.com/iAJNKCz.jpg
The man, the myth, the legend returns for the sequel. Steven Seagal in all of his slicked back, monotone glory uses his snake oil martial arts and ultra cool demeanor to effortlessly slaughter everything in his path. Where as Under Siege (1992) was under the impression that it was a real movie, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory suffers from no such conceit. This is a dead pan parody of an action movie bordering on surreal. It's got the worst one liners, the most incredulous choreography, the silliest set pieces, and a mental health enigma at its helm. You know it's something special when you utter "WHAT?" followed by gut wrenching laughter regularly through out it.

Good build up of tension. Not given any time to breathe, as the film ends right after the fairly quick climactic gunfight.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Director: Wes Craven
I had completely forgotten about the first film. I saw it again like it was the first time. Clever effects and lighting. Some genuinely creepy atmosphere. Freddy is barely lit and has no broad jokes, which makes this first entry effective. The music score is kind of incredible and props the movie up at least by 50-60%. They really should have stopped here.
There is a lack of logic that comes off as laughable (ie-Nancy asks her father to come to her room and wake her in 20 mins - then she proceeds to boobytrap her bedroom and house with complex anarchist cookbook devices before laying down 10 minutes later), but it's forgivable, I suppose.

The acting was immature and distractive to watch. However this movie sends right message about relationship and marriage. For those who have relationship issues, this movie could save you money on counselling.

One of those cases when an otherwise so-so film (imo) is elevated by an unexpectedly brilliant ending. Worth a watch for that alone! The use of color was also exceptional btw, as was the soundtrack by Cat Stevens and Can.

Batman and Robin - 1997
Mister Freeze freezes Gotham and here comes the new action figures Batman, Robin and Batgirl silver edition. Batgirl literally just got her suit a scene ago and she’s now wearing a new suit. How fast can these suits be made? Not only do the action figures come with new suits, they have new vehicles as well. Batgirl comes with a bike that runs on ice (sure), Batman comes with an ice boat thing (yeah) and Robin comes with an airboat (really?) … Kids ask your parents for permission before calling to buy, they are only twelve easy payments of $9.99.

The guy walks into the house, gets bludgeoned with the hammer, his body starts convulsing, you hear pigs squeeling, he's dragged into the back, and the metal door is shut.
Oh thanks. I need a re-watch

Shutter Island (2010)
This starts off as though it is basically Jurassic Park but with crazy people - an isolated island, a huge storm, there's even a point where the fences go down. It's alright, and there are some good visual elements, but I guessed the main 'twist' fairly early on and was hoping there would be few more. It was all very over the top - over the top music, over the top acting, and a fairly over the top situation. Also way too many dead kids and more 'we're still in the dream' moments than Inception. It wasn't subtle enough to be really creepy and the writing wasn't really clever enough to support the story. But it's otherwise entertaining enough, with just enough good moments to keep you interested.

The King of Comedy (1982)
3
I like to think Travis Bickle after tired driving taxi changed his name Rupert Pupkin and, in his typical way, pursuing the career of stand-up comedian. We now finally know what is the name of the concession girl from that filthy porn theather. Her name is Rita and now she has more respectable job as a bartender and of course Travis, now Rupert, finally made a proper introduction and they made friends! There is also a big revelation about a taxi customer who made Travis to watch the windows of apartment where the guy’s wife was cheating on him with a coloured gentleman. He actually works for Jerry Langford’s production crew!
http://i.imgur.com/Js1jjpB.jpg
Just kidding! The idea of a wannabe comedian kidnaping another top comedian to make the production to broadcast his number was great but the execution just didn’t work for me. However it is still a good movie but far from great.

I don't feel at home in this world anymore (2017)
This film was a bit weird. It was ok, and good in parts but for me it was guilty of trying to do to much.
It was a funny and lighthearted indy film in parts and then switched to a gangster shoot em up, with plenty in between.
I liked the 2 main characters and the actors that played them but at times I was thinking what am I watching.
It was like a mash up of 'Napoleon Dynamite' and 'Snatch'
It wasn't bad, but I still can't decide if I enjoyed it or not.

Disturbia (2007)
I re-watched this film last night and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time.
The film is about a troubled young man called Kale (LaBeouf) who is placed under house arrest.
The film centres around what he does whilst he is confined to his property and the observations he makes of his neighbours.
The film is a great example of how a film should raise the tension as well as maintain a sense of intrigue throughout.
LaBeouf is excellent in his role and I find him utterly convincing.
Overall it is a slick, quirky and edgy thriller.

Call Northside 777 (1948)
3.5
http://iv1.lisimg.com/image/4737879/720full-call-northside-777-screenshot.jpg
I watched this blindly on TCM, only because it's on the noirs list. It took me a short time to get into it with it's methodical pace. It seemed to lack atmosphere and the usual noir camerawork and dialogue. There was also no musical score. The story took over, and once I realized what type of movie it was, I was pretty much hooked. In my opinion, this isn't a noir. This movie is based on a true story, and it's the kind of story we've all seen many times in film. A police officer is executed inside of a local establishment. Two men are arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Fast forward 11 years to an editor (Lee J. Cobb) reading an ad in the paper offering $5000 for new information on the case. The editor has a reporter (James Stewart) check it out. The ad was put out by the mother of one of the men convicted, and so from there the reporter sets out to prove innocence and get the son freed. There is very little about the second man convicted. Jimmy Stewart was fantastic in this and so was the supporting cast. It's not a spectacular story but it is solid and involving.
Never truly sat down and studied this film but tonight I finally had the perfect opportunity with the new Eureka release on blu ray. This is as tight as a horror film gets, front to back. Loved the music score, cast, the comedy, the make-up, the cinematography, writing. Everything about Fright Night totally rocks! Very well made film and a lot of fun.

The Dirty Dozen (1967) Re-watch
Hadn't seen this action classic in many a year, and have never seen it in its original theatrical form. There wasn't a whole lot of difference except for a few cuss words and a few seconds of gore (bullet to the head, knife to a woman's gut). Other than that, same great movie. The plot, for those few who have never seen it, is the mold for many that would follow. It's about Major Reisman (Lee Marvin) who is tasked with training a motley crew of twelve army prisoners to raid a WWII Nazi fortress and kill as many enemy officers as possible. All the prisoners are naturally not with the program, especially Franko (a great John Cassavettes), but Reisman and Sergeant Bowren (Richard Jaeckel) get them all into shape to make the big raid. What follows is the requisite training, followed by the raid and all the mayhem that ensues. A great cast (besides Marvin, Cassavettes, and Jaeckel) includes Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, Trini López (the singer), Ralph Meeker, Robert Ryan, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Clint Walker, and Robert Webber. Expertly and tightly directed by class director Robert Aldrich (The Flight of the Phoenix, Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Longest Yard, to name but a few). One of the best.

Arrival (Villeneuve, 2016) 3
http://i.imgur.com/xfnQp3f.jpg
As much as I'd like to praise Villeneuve for crafting such a big movie about such intimate exchanges, I can't get past watching a film about communication which fails to communicate with me. I could wax poetic about the visualizations or broader concepts, but I can't form a cogent opinion on what exactly it means or how it should affect me. For all of the fair criticisms levied at a picture like Interstellar, the emotional affirmation it awarded me felt far more genuine than the shorthand provided here which is basically a device to explain a concept.
So while I can appreciate Villeneuve's incredible resolve in making an impenetrable movie for a wide audience, I'd be lying to myself if I pretended that its profundity resonated with me in any meaningful way. When a film adaptation makes me want to read its source material so that I can develop some semblance of intertextual meaning, that means it can't stand on its in a satisfactory manner. I have no problem with movies that require further attention to yield answers, often those are the most fulfilling experiences, but I want to see how Ted Chiang approached this subject more than I want to revisit how Denis Villeneuve did. The fact that Story of Your Life is written as a message from the mother to the daughter already feels more appropriate given what kind of emotional and thematic weight hinges on their relationship.

Well done. Enjoyed this flick a lot. I especially loved the way they made Kong look. It was a basic yet cool throwback to the old black and white version. And like Peter Jackson's version, the island was one of horror with creepy and deadly creatures at every corner. The action scenes were off the chain and the CGI was mostly realistic and kept to a minimum; nothing too over the top; which I like.
The plans are to do a Godzilla movie and then one with both Kong and Godzilla, with the top secret Monarch agency in the story line.
BTW, watch until the end of the credits. :D

Show Me Love. Agnes (Rebecka Liljeberg) is a lonely and miserable teenage girl living in the dead-end Swedish town of Amal, ostracised from her peers due to an (accurate) perception of her sexuality, and painfully in love with one of her school's most popular girls, blonde bombshell and supposedly boy-mad Elin (Alexandra Dahlstrom), who has no idea she even exists. Their paths finally cross one night, and following a cruel prank that Elin instantly regrets, she goes back to apologise and finds that Agnes may be more of a kindred spirit than she would ever have guessed. This 1998 Swedish teen comedy-drama-love story was a massive success in its home country, actually outgrossing Titanic, and remains a touching, sweet, agonisingly believable and often very funny movie that remains firmly in my top 10 favourite films of all time. Lovely. :)

I'm pretty sure not so many people know about this film, in fact, I would be extremely surprised if I found out that anyone in this board has watched it before, which is very sad and disappointing because of how great it is. I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone though, it's definitely incredibly slow, but it also offers enough to keep you engaged in the character(s) and the happenings. It's nowhere near perfect, but it sure is an experience to have. If you're interested in it, I advise you to jump into it completely blind, all you really need to know is that it's Swedish. I'm currently debating within myself about it being either a 3.5 or a 4 and I think a second watch will decide that for me.

Clint Eastwood's favorite movie was nominated for best picture but lost to Casablanca. I can't argue with that, but I thought this movie was also brilliant. There is so much power packed into a measly 75 minutes, and it results with what I thought was a deeply haunting film. Great performances from Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Anthony Quinn, and more. I can't wait to watch it again. I thought the 40's weren't going to be so great but boy was I wrong.

Win it All - 2017
One of the best part of this movie in my eyes, was the relationship between Eddie and his older brother Ron, played by Joe Lo Truglio. Was placentally surprised by Truglio, as he plays against type, being the straight man of the relationship. They instantly sold me on their love for each other. Truglio’s constant need to help Johnson felt genuine and you could tell it’s been years of him repeating the same advice, hoping this time around will be different.
Win it all was a breath of fresh air that I needed after watching three unoriginal remakes and one uninspired movies in a row. This is the type of movie that drove me to start my blog and my reviews. This is why I love movies.

Wow, just wow. Big on action, big on CGI, big on unintentional comedy, big on nonsense. I enjoyed it for the acton and Benny Hill style opening scenes. Gibson's legacy is safe, in my opinion. This blockbuster was totally unbelievable. The babes were an improvement. I don't need to own this, or see it again.
There's obviously a bit of clean up cg and background cg for the setting, but more than 80% of the movie is practical...
Maybe you already know but from the sentence it just seemed like you were unaware. :)

But according to these before/after images, which come from Fx magazine’s new detailed rundown of the film’s visual effects, nearly every shot of the film was enhanced using painstaking CGI.

7/10...still a heartwarming little tale, but the first one was better.
Care to refresh my memory on this one? If you're referring to the man chaperone for the girls at the beginning, he's very much alive.
Oh what happened to him? I dont recall seeing him again so I just assumed.
I watched The Other Woman last night. I didnt find it remotely funny apart from Nikolaj bumbling straight through plate glass. I give it half a cup of poppycock for Cameron's laugh and the great dane.

I think the best side of this movie are: Jeff Bridges - fantastic as always, Chris Pine - sometimes it is good not to be such a prim, and Ben Foster - it wasn't his first role of madman, but this one I'll remember for a long time. Entirety of the film isn't maybe overwhelming, but worth of seeing.

The thing about films like these is they're almost always embellished. Sometimes there's really no truth to them at all. In this case you have characters being portrayed in an almost righteous manner when they were anything but. I get that it's mainly about the group's ordeal in the music industry, but it just came across as fluff most of the time that I couldn't take anything seriously.

Sure. Looks like you indeed knew more than the average person. I just didn't want to go into too much detail if you were one of those people who though that all the action scenes were done in CG.
I know they CG the hell out of everything around the action. I've scene a lot if the before and after videos in the past... but what means something to me at least is that the core of the movie is practical. Over 80% is done practical and that makes it feel more authentic - even with digital enhancements and whatnot. That the cars are actually there and that they crash for real and that people are suspended using wires and that Miller shoots the centre piece practical and adds the background and less important parts with CG only makes him have his priorities straight. And that's the oldest trick in the book and why Jurassic Park works so well today still, for example.
Anyways, awesome you liked it. I'm not even a mega fan myself but I can appreciate it and enjoy it though I don't love it.

Mechanic: Ressurection
(Dennis Gansel)

0.5
Before writing this review, I had to go over to the Wiki page to confirm some plot details because I was so completely blindsided by how stupid everything was. The page confirmed my initial thoughts, this movie is utter garbage.
Jason Statham has said, that after a few supporting roles; The Expendables franchise, Spy, Fast & Furious series, that he wanted to give his fans a starring role. This is his 'gift' to his fan. I don't know about anyone else, but I would be offended if he thought this was a gift. Maybe it's a gift in the sense that you can get blackout drunk and make fun of it with a bunch of friends. This film is bad.
Bishop is living a quiet life as a retired 'Mechanic'. Everything is nice and peaceful for him until a woman shows up knowing who he is and demanding he take a job. He's surrounded by a bunch of goons to persuade him, but this is JASON MOTHER F'IN STATHAM, you don't persuade him. They attack him and for some reason, they all conveniently forgot to bring guns because they only attack him with their fists. He takes them out one by one, as JASON MOTHER F'IN STATHAM does, jumps off a building onto a gondola ride, is finally shot at, then jumps onto someone hang gliding. I thought I remembered the first film being somewhat realistic, this one tells you right from the start not to expect any form of realism. This film is bad.
Then he goes to a secluded island where he meets Jessica Alba, but she's not there by chance and he discovers that she's actually there to get him to take the job. SHOCKER. She is being forced to do so against her will, she tells him this, he suspects that she is being used so that he can fall in love with her, so she can be kidnapped and used against him to force him in taking the job. The job is killing 3 people, making it look like accidents. Guess what, he falls in love with her, in 2 days it seems, guys come, kidnap her and he is forced to do the job. Yes people, he knows this stranger will be used against him and it happens. What the hell?!?!?!?!?! This film is bad.
So that's the first third.
He then goes to perform the killings, each one more "impossible" than the next. The first he must infiltrate a prison which is on an island, surrounded by sharks. He gets the job done and uses shark repellent to escape. Adam West would be proud. The second, which is not terrible and is what made the film earn this half popcorn rating, is a killing in a pool. This was the selling point sequence as they advertised it in the trailers, on the posters, everywhere. The third kill is Tommy Lee Jones....wow. His screen time must be less than 10 minutes, with a few lines at best. This film is bad.
I can set aside the absurdity of one man taking on dozens of bad guys, one shot kills and never getting injured. This tired and cliched action trope has been part of the genre for decades. I can't get pass the inane reason as to why he is being forced into this job. Jessica Alba's role is terrible. One easy and quick way to fix this is to have him already BE with her. Was it really that hard? Why the hell are you making them JUST MEET, then have her kidnapped a day or two later. How is this a good idea? How does this make any sense? How does this make the movie better? It doesn't. It makes it incredibly frustrating. Even if the whole thing was a set up to kill the man after them, he still plays his stupid game and does the killings. This film is bad.
Mechanic: Resurrection is an embarrassing mess of a film, with bad CGI (everything is green screened) and even worse plot developments. Even for a brainless action film, this film lacks brains.
This film is bad.
They resurrected a mechanic? Why!?!?!?

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? - 1962
I’ll be upfront, the main reason I’m watching this movie is because of my obsession with the TV show Feud. As I sat down to watch this classic, it barely took me a minute to completely forget the TV show and get immersed in this world. The story centers around two sisters, both once movie stars, played by Bette Davis (Baby Jane) and Joan Crawford (Blanche). This casting is now Hollywood legend, boosted by their mutual disdain and bitter rivalry. Directed by Robert Aldrich, a master of movie genre, this movie had all the makings to be a bomb and it turned out to be a classic, thanks to his ability to reel in his stars.
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is a great psychological thriller that will stick with you long after you watch it. The ending to this movie, I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I just want to say it’s disturbing and sad. I have been singing in my head, "I've Written a Letter to Daddy" and it both creeps me out and makes me happy. That inner conflict of emotions is why I love movies.

I'm in the minority who doesn't think this film is great. Racism card was played way too much, even if it was presented in subtle manner,- as if. "Something is creepily off" vibe was in every frame so it couldn't have rhythm. Though I must say few times it wasn't being annoying it managed to create genuine atmosphere of creepy dread. With better direction, this could have been a gem.

It's beautiful and feels like the first in a long time to be fully deserving of the term.
It's strange, I can't stop thinking about it but I don't think I had a strong reaction to it while watching it. I'm dying to revisit.
It's all about a struggle to communicate. Communicate frustration, love, aspirations and hatred. It's something that I, and I'm sure many others, are too familiar with. Holding back your exact words and creating shells for yourself. In retrospect, the final lines and final shot feel like some of the most cathartic and potent in all of last year.
On performances, Ali and Harris are wonderful but I think André Holland is perfect in the final act. His work might be one for the ages in terms of close-ups.

Ready to Rumble (2000) Re-watch
Hadn't seen this since viewing it at the cinema the year of its release, but remembered liking it quite a bit so I thought a re-watch was in order when it came on cable the other night. I ended up enjoying it probably a bit more. All about two young slacker sewer workers (Scott Caan and David Arquette) who are massive professional wrestling fans and go one night to see their hero, Jimmy King (Oliver Platt) live. They just so happen to pick the night where the head of the wrestling corporation (Joe Pantoliano) has decided that King's "reign" is over and he has a crowd of wrestlers, led by Diamond Dallas Page, sabotage King and put him out of commission, ostensibly ending his wrestling career. But this will not stand with his two biggest fans, Gordie (Arquette) and Sean (Caan), who set about pulling King out of his drunken funk and getting an unlikely wrestling expert to help: an elderly ass-kicker played by a gleeful Martin Landau. Throw in a sexy ring girl played by Rose McGowan and you've got a fun-loving action-comedy that never lets up and is gamely played by its entire cast. Some of the funniest bits are when one of the buddies gets hit in the face or thrown by one of the wrestlers, and the other friend rushes up and says, "Now do me!" Wonderful slob comedy.

Taking Care of Business (1990)
First time seeing this switched-identity comedy and it works for the most part. Jim Belushi plays a convict who is serving the last two days of a prison sentence and wins some tickets to the World Series over the radio. So, with 48 hours of jail left, he decides to break out so he can go to the game! His jail buddies fake a riot where Belushi is "taken hostage" while he is really sneaking out during all the chaos. While he's sneaking a ride with the prison bus, Charles Grodin, a big city businessman gets mugged, losing his Filofax with all of his info, credits cards...practically his whole life in that thing. Of course Belushi finds it and starts living it up posing as Grodin's character. He experiences the high life, driving Grodin's fancy car, romancing the daughter of the boss, going to meetings and crudely telling it straight to other businessmen, basically not caring what they think. Meanwhile, Grodin is walking the streets looking like a bum, till he gets some much-needed help from an old friend, wonderfully played by Anne De Salvo. Grodin basically plays his usual slow-burn character, and Belushi is light-hearted and easy-going. Grodin has lots of people he's never met face-to-face with on business deals who naturally don't believe this sloppy-looking guy when they've already met with Belushi wearing Grodin's suits and throwing around money. But, as the films goes on, you know the two are going to meet up and Grodin will vent his spleen on Belushi. A good supporting cast helps out tremendously, including the aforementioned De Salvo ("Arthur"), Stephen Elliott (also in "Arthur"), the beautiful Loryn Locklin, the also beautiful Veronica Hamel and Gates McFadden, Hector Elizondo, Mako, John de Lancie, and the great Ken Foree (the original "Dawn of the Dead"). Not a perfect gut-buster but well-worth the watch.

It was good. A problem I had with it was the cheesy trumpet music they always play in old movies, which definitely doesn't help to build the atmosphere of the film. The music makes the atmosphere feel awkward. There were some scenes where I feel like if they omitted the music, the scene would have a great sense of dread.
There was a couple of dumb character decisions but I can forgive that since the main characters are kids (No offense to any kids out there!).
Not much else to say about it, so I'm going to give this film:

This movie is about a group of college students want to go to a spring break trip, have fun. But they do not have enough money to go to the trip so they rob a diner.
Eventually during the trip the girls got involved with a rapper/ gangster / Arms dealer/ Drug Lord played by James Franco and what happens to those girls that's the main plot of the movie.
Now I really like James Franco as an actor. I liked 127 Hours, I liked Pineapple Express. This is the End, The Interview and the latest movie Why Him which I also very much enjoyed. In this movie also he was completely lost into the character. I think that's the best part of the movie.
The girls' characters are fine I guess. I did not find their characters that interesting. I didn't really care about any of them. Throughout the movie I was confused about who the lead is. First I thought Selena Gomez's character is the lead character. Then I thought James Franco's character is the lead. But when the movie ends I still did not find proper antagonist or protagonist. Also the editing of the movie felt like a music video editing. It took a long time to get into the main plot. The tone of the movie was all over the place. This movie literally gave me headache.
But my biggest issue with the movie is the narration. Most of the time viewers are inside different character's head, listening to their thoughts (or they were speaking out loud, I didn't understand). Narration wise this movie sometimes feels like some Terrence Malick movies like "To The Wonder" or "Knight of Cups". Some of the dialogues are repeated over and over again the exact same way as if someone is reading a poetry.
Overall, I did not like Spring Breakers. This is not a bad movie where nothing makes sense, it's just the way it is told felt dull. I am going to give it a C.

Sleepwalkers
(Mick Garris)

1
I don't remember which Christmas it was, but I do remember telling my mom that I wanted horror movies, any kind, as gifts. Stephen King's Sleepwalkers was under the tree that year. Then, probably more than a decade later, I watched it. This is my second viewing, one in which I can appreciate and laugh at the absurdity of it all. This is not really a horror film, it's a comedy. I mean, it has to be, right?
Mary and Charles are mother and son shape-shifting demons who can create illusions and have telekinetic powers. They need to suck the life force out of virgins to continue living and move from town to town doing so. The director, Garris, would later on use this same idea in Hocus Pocus. Their one weakness....CATS. Oh yeah, they bang each other all the time.
Based on an unpublished Stephen King story....there's your first warning, this Mick Garris film feels right out of the 80's, but was actually released in 1992. Garris is responsible for multiple King adaptions, and none of them are particularly good. Sleepwalkers has all the makings of a TV movie, bad acting, bad production values, cheesy effects and hilariously inappropriate moments. The moment that Charles turns into his cat like demonoid self and delivers weird and awkward, yet in his mind hilarious one-liners, is when you have to realize that this film is operating at another level. That level is beyond what we as normal human beings can even begin to comprehend. Sleepwalkers is a masterpiece of bad filmmaking.
The one recognizable face here is Mädchen Amick, from Twin Peaks fame. She plays the virgin (yeah right). The role requires the bare minimum from an actress in a horror film. For some bizarre reason though, this film is FULL of horror icon cameos; Stephen King, John Landis, Tobe Hooper, Clive Barker, Joe Dante and then for some reason Mark Hamill. These are fun little nods to viewers at home, who are already checked out of the story and are looking for some other sort of entertainment.
Watch this film when you have a bunch of friends over, want to watch a hilariously bad film and make a drinking game out of it. That's the best use of your time involving this one here.
A movie that puts a spotlight on the comfortableness of racism.....had too much focus on racism? Consider me confused. Did Goodfellas deal too much with the mob?
I felt that every scene had racialist subtext. I'd rather I as a viewer was given a break.
To use "Goodefellas" analogy, it would be like they implied themselves to be good fellas in every scene.
Maybe I just didn't "get it".

Beauty and the Beast (2017)
I enjoyed this a lot. It looks fantastic. The castle is incredible.
It's just that all of the good bits were good bits in the first movie. There's nothing exciting about it because you know exactly where it's going to go. There are a few bits that are fleshed out, which were enjoyable, but mostly it's just.... the same. Good, but the same. There's a certain amount of redundancy in making a live action movie version of an animated film and then... animating a lot of it. The Beast's cgi face was distracting. Why couldn't they have used a few more practical effects? The casting was good, I liked Emma Watson as Belle, and Gaston and Le Fou were particularly good - all kudos to Josh Gad for taking the most cartoony of animated roles and making it plausible and sympathetic. The new songs don't add much - except to the running time. And much as I loved the old songs, I wonder whether without them, they would have been free to make something more original.

I've seen this reaction a lot, actually. I can't imagine the uncomfortableness it's brought out not being intentional. It's meant to force people confront those ideas and personal thoughts on the subject matter, wether it's through intentional leading or through the audiences own initiative.
What I'm saying is if you think the "race card" was played too much, well, that's what the movie wanted you to think and confront.
Btw, I thought this was brilliantly directed and pretty flawless in writing. It's not often that a movie can be hilarious and f****** creepy on intention.
Last movie I saw was yesterday XXX: Return Of The Xander Cage, I would rate it 8/10, I don't get why it has so low rating on imdb

Coherence
(James Ward Byrkit)

Here is a film that I am glad I gave a chance. A directorial debut, shot in his own house, in 5 days and on a budget of $50,000 does not sound like the type of film I have time for, but Coherence manages to entertain, confuse and delight.
8 friends get together for a dinner party the night a comet passes by Earth. Just as the comet passes, the entire street neighbourhood suffers a blackout, only one house has their lights on. As the people decide to investigate and ask for help, strange things begin to happen and they start to question their own reality.
Okay, not much to go on, but I feel if I say anything more regarding the plot would spoil the 'discovery' of the film. Coherence is very much a discovery movie as it likes to peel away at its own layers to reveal bits and pieces of the mysteries. I went in blind, only knowing that my uncle had recommended it and it starred Nicholas Brendon from Buffy fame. I didn't expect the film to be as enthralling as it is. The film is essentially people talking to each other in one room. How exciting can it get?
Byrkit wanted conduct an experiment, Coherence is the result. The test was to shoot a film with no crew and no script for the actors. So each actor was given a paragraph for the specific scene and their goal was to achieve whatever was on that paper. For example, one actor was told he had to leave the house to investigate outside, another actor was told to make sure the guy doesn't leave the house no matter what. The rest is improvisation on the actors. Most of the dialogue is improv, which provides a more causal atmosphere. You'll usually see this in a film about people simply hanging out, like in the film Drinking Buddies. Coherence is very much about people hanging out, but the impressive part is how structured the mysteries are and the peeling away at the core elements presented by the director. The second aspect was the skeleton crew behind the scenes. Two sound guys, a producer, the director and the DOP. That's it. Coherence is impressive to me based on these facts and the final results.
Great filmmakers can do a lot with very little. Byrkit does this with Coherence. I won't call him a great filmmaker just yet, the jury is still out on that. The visual style here is very basic, Byrkit serves the story first and negates the visuals. Not a big deal, but now that we know the guy can direct, let's see what he can really do with some change in his pocket. The cast itself helps propel the film to where it needs to go. The improvisation helps this, they all seem to really work well off each other and when the impossible starts to be possible, they seem to have a lot of fun with the concept.
Coherence is a math puzzle that is a lot of fun to solve, fans of the horror film Triangle will definitely get a kick out of this one. When a film asks the viewer to look for and solve clues, it's always a fun time. Give this unknown little independent film a chance, you might be surprised by the results.

Based on what you rate films?
If you like? If don't like? Just like that?
With me it's different, I give a note based on what they're selling me and what I'm getting! If I go to the cinema to see 'Taken', a movie that is selling me action, I'll base it on it, even if the movie takes different paths in the middle or in the end, I'll still judge it for what it is and by what he gave me! The action sucks, sorry, but Shaky Cam? really? That is unbearable! If they sell action I want to see the damn action!
Why did I give 'John Wick 2' 5 out of 5? They were selling me action, and I was completely satisfied with it, if anyone wants to compare it to The Godfather, okay!
If I go to the cinema today see 'Fast 8' I'll say he's bad based on what? The film is part of a franchise that doesn't take itself seriously and they sells the film like that! just like Transformers sells you explosions! "Hey guys, we made another Transformers, there are explosions and a lot of CGI, we changed the lead actor but nobody gives a damn right?" Right, people who likes this films don't give a damn!
If you can't take me serious because I watch films like 'Oppai Chanbara: Striptease Samurai Squad' ok! But they sell it like a garbage pink film...
and it delivers! :D
Based on this, Thor it's a big failure to me, they fail to delivery everything in that film.

First, The Visceral: HOLY F@CKIN ***** was that messed up!!!
and now, The Cerebral: A truly taut, and at times, intimating bit of cinema. You are snatched up from the opening rain deluge and pulled in - literally. There is an intimacy that puts you within the rooms and you are unable to escape. I do not mean this in a claustrophobic sense. You are merely put INTO a spiraling situation going completely out of control. Done with diabolical precision. And yes, to concur with Visceral, that ***** was messed up!!

The Bleeding (2009)
Wow, I don't know where to start. This is not a very good movie but somehow I kept watching. All about a guy who is after his brother, who used to be a soldier but is now the head vampire of the movie. Our hero, who goes by the name of Black, is played by Michael Matthias, a poor-man's Vin Diesel, complete with the ripped muscles and the bald head. His vamp-brother is played by none other than Vinnie Jones! We also have a gun-toting priest, played by Michael Madsen. Jones and Madsen are what drew me to this, and Madsen does a decent job here. But, Jones, oy vey! I cracked up when I saw him show up in a long coat, with a long-haired wig, a large-brimmed pimp hat, snarling in a silly way, looking like he was cracking up like I was. Madsen has blessed the cache of weapons they use on the warehouse of vampires, so one shot and they're down, but the good guys use them to excess, pouring machine gun lead into them. Madsen tells Matthias that the main aim is to destroy their coffins which are being loaded into a tractor-trailer rig. After much shooting and fighting, there is a "Road Warrior" style chase at night after the rig, with Matthias standing on top of the rig while a hot chick drives, firing at the chase vehicles with Uzis, then suddenly he's got a shotgun in his hand. Vampires are shot, flail in slow motion, then fast, for no discernible reason. The editing is like it was done by a Sushi Chef, the whole look of the film is a few shades darker than normal, I guess to give the film an ominous look. Big fail on that count. Oops, forgot to say that Madsen tells Matthias that the only way to kill his vampire brother is with a special sword. When it's given to Matthias, it glows with crappy CGI effects. Of course, Jones has a sword of his own and there's a big duel. And all the while, Matthias is narrating the movie in a monotone way, so you know he'll come through. Still, I liked some of it for Madsen's sake and for the goofy action-chase at the end. If you want to have something kooky playing in the background, then this is your ticket. If you want a movie to mock ala MST3K-style, here you go. If you want to watch a movie that sucks out loud but is still watchable, jump on! The two bags of popcorn are one for Madsen, and one for the goofy chase.

The Void is a film I was looking forward to. The film feels similar to a lot of the low-budget science-fiction horror films from the 80s which is a lot of why I was excited about it from the get-go, and on an aesthetic level, I enjoyed it. The film itself though is comprised of paper-thin characters and a narrative that leaves a lot to be desired. The Void isn't what I'd call a good film. It's very rough around the edges and the concept definitely should have been fleshed out a lot more than it was. Still, I really did enjoy the practical effects and I am excited for what the future holds for the directors.

Escape from New York - 1981
I first watched this movie back when I was 13 to 14 years old and I loved it. Watching it now, I completely understand why I loved it. This movie feels like a teenager wrote and directed it, similar to 2013’s Pacific Rim. This by no means is a critic, this movie is awesome and holds up to this day, but let’s talk about our hero.
Kurt Russell plays S.D. Bob “Snake” Plissken but you better call him Snake. He is the equivalent of what every 13-year-old boy thinks is badass. He has long hair, an eye patch, a raspy voice, scar on his face, no sleeves, a tattoo of a snake and his nickname is Snake. I mean is there anything else you would want from your badass hero? He is a former military lieutenant, now criminal that is offered a clean slate if he rescues the president.
Escape from New York is just fun very few movies like this are made today. The premise is simple, the execution is perfect and the characters are memorable. I had fun watching this movie again and at the end of the day that’s a huge part of why I love movies.

30 For 30: One and Not Done
I don't watch college basketball (just the NBA) but I find the coaches interesting, especially a guy I've been hearing for all my life.

Broken uncle is forced to care for his nephew.
What a clean, beautiful look at human loss and sadness. Puts you immediately in a deep melancholy, without being obvious about it. Casey Affleck has rocketed past his brother for sheer angst performance, well deserving of his Oscar. Michelle Williams is phenomenal -brought me to tears in the simplest of scenes. Lucas Hedges is wonderfully fresh and plays so well against Affleck.
Great film. 9.3 tears out of 10
Beauty and the beast. An enjoyable enough live action movie version of the classic fairy tale, recommended family viewing felt that it appeals to women more than a ultra masculine rock hard tough guy like me though (lol)

I felt the same as you. I didnt know anything about this other than it was horror genre. Really enjoyed the 80s Carpenter feel and it reminded me a lot of The Thing, especially with fx, the constant tension, and the score. Did not like the strobe lighting at times - that quite hurt my peepers - and at the end Mr D and I looked at each other and said Huh? Otherwise, it was pretty good. No jump scares - thank goodness for that - but steady suspense. I also look forward to seeing more of their work.

I've been putting this off because it's a tissue boxer. Not sure whether to just dive straight in or get high on pure cacao first.

Melancholic movies can wreck my weekend, earl, so I'll decide at the last minute this weekend. I want to see it for the acting which everyone raves about so I'm sort of in two minds.

Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance - 2015
Had fun with this one, full review over at my site!
Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance is the weirdest music video I have ever seen, but I got to see Tommy Wiseau dressed up as a Samurai and that’s why I love movies.
