The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
I must say that I enjoyed this follow-up more than the first film. This one actually gets the main characters caught out in the streets, running from and fighting against, the maniacs who participate in the annual purge. For those who don't know, this purge is a one-night annual orgy of violence where every violent act is legal from dusk-till-dawn. This one puts an interesting spin on the first one by having a militant group that is against the purge. Also, there is one man who is armed to the teeth, who purposely drives out into the streets. We don't know till the end what his aim is, but he falls in with a quartet of people who are trying to survive after getting caught outdoors at night.
A very tense flick with shades of The Warriors and Escape From New York. Although nowhere near as good as those movies, this is a fine, never flagging movie that is well worth a watch.

The Sentimental Swordsman (1977) - Chor Yuen (Hong Kong Action)
Relatively standard Hong Kong martial arts movie. Some of the action is good and it looks pretty nice but the bad acting and script make it only an ok movie.

22 Jump Street (2014) - Christopher Miller/Phil Lord (American Comedy)
A silly and pointless sequel ... that actually made me laugh a lot. Hill & Tatum have really good chemistry and Ice Cube is constantly amusing playing the standard police boss caricature.
Its self awareness perhaps gets a bit old after a while but mostly it was lots of fun.

Boccaccio '70 (1962) - Mario Monicelli/Federico Fellini/Luchino Viconti/Vittorio De Sica (Italian Romance)
I really like the idea of anthology films. Being able to watch the work of (in this case) great directors side by side really appeals to me. But, unfortunately these films are often lesser works of the directors involved. I've wondered if it's because they have been asked to create something with specific themes rather than them just naturally going through their process for making a movie.
This is actually quite good but relative to the talent of the directors involved it's ultimately a little disappointing. It's my second lowest rated movie for each of Fellini, De Sica and Monicelli. It's the first time I've seen anything by Visconti but I didn't really like his segment so I'm sure he's done better.
It's kind of a bunch of stories about love (sex?) starring Marisa Solinas, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider & Sophia Loren (in the same order as the directors they work with) and that lineup alone is enough to make it worth watching but for a 3.5 hour movie I wanted more.

The Pawnbroker - 6/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7a/Pawnbroker_ver2.jpg
I didn't care for the acting, but the movie kept me interested. It's about a pawnbroker (Steiger), a very empty and bitter man, who cares about nothing or no one. We do see flashbacks to give us a little bit of his past life. His customers are poor, and try to get anything they can for their possessions. A few of the people who come in are lonely as the pawnbroker, but Steiger looks down upon them, calls them nobodies. However, there's a woman, an anomaly, comes in, wants some charity for local projects, and even when she extends her hand, he won't take it.
There is a young man who works for him to help support himself and hit mother. He's pressured to get money, and is even taught by Steiger that money is everything and the only thing. The young man tries to have some kind of relationship with him, but is considered scum just like the rest of them, which causes him to turn against the man, and to follow the money.
Wow! The acting is exceptional - Jaime Sanchez, Juano Hernandez, Brock Peters and the towering Rod Steiger (among others.) The editing is also tremendous.

A very enjoyable movie about a man who has to save his father's shoe factory with the help of a drag queen. It made me laugh, smile and cry. It's only problems is that is predictable and follows a quite familiar pattern of story structure. The actors are well cast and the characters are likeable. It's a movie I can imagine myself rewatching.

This is the first Saturday I have had free in a while just to devote to movies, this is my favorite kind of Saturday by the way. So the original plan was to hit the redbox for Unbroken and the last Hobbit film but I really didn't feel like leaving the house so I decided to re-watch some movies I have wanted to for a long time. Zodiac was one of those movies, I really loved it the first time I saw it but haven't returned to it since its release. All that to say, how good is Zodiac? I am having a hard time thinking of a movie I consider to be a procedural that is better, and yes that includes All The Presidents Men. This movie is just perfect. Great atmosphere set by Fincher. Really good script with compelling characters and outstanding performances. I love the music. Just a delight to revisit this film, hopefully I won't put it off another eight years. Which reminded me. 2007 produced Zodiac, There Will Be Blood, and No Country For Old Men. 1994 has always been my favorite year in film but 2007 gives it a run for its money. Hardly fair to the other years to have three movies that good.

Bloody Moon (1981) 3
This is a Euro slasher that was recommended by Zotis in one of the horror threads. It has a lot of what you look for in a movie like this; pretty girls, decent kills, and cheesy dialogue. It also has a good score, a nice setting, and a touch of strange. I think two crucial elements are a little subpar, preventing this movie from being an upper echelon slasher-the gore effects could be a little better and it lacks a truly memorable villain. Above average and recommended for slasher fans.

Your attitude is extremely friendly? Complaining about it like that.
Gunbuster is an absolute classic. In The Anime Encyclopedia, it's called "the ultimate video anime", for those who never experienced the glory of anime OVA's I think it's an excellent introduction to the field. It's very fast paced, easy to watch, features a linear plot based on character development. It's a conventional movie just a very well executed one.
Complaining about having to watch it is ludicrous and really shows the prejudice against animation. Which is more appalling in science fiction since most good science fiction media made in the last 30 years is anime.
BlueLion

Well, you don't care for something you don't know anything about. Too bad for you to shut yourself against an entire art form while restricting yourself to only live action. There are 2 fundamental types of film: animation and live action, you only dedicate your time to one of the two while shutting yourself off against the other (yes, because there isn't much in animation besides anime, which is a shame I would love to watch adult western animation but it's extremely rare).
Anyway it's a waste of time to talk with close minded people.

BlueLion, I've been quietly reading this conversation, and I just wanted to say that I read on the Sci-i HoF thread that you did drop out, and I think you're being unfair to Guap, yourself, and everyone who joined the Sci-Fi HoF.
You made a decision not to watch one specific movie just because the person who nominated it is excited that other people will be watching one of his favorite movies, and he wants to talk about it. The whole point of these genre HoFs is to get people to watch some of our favorite movies. In this case, it just happens to be an anime movie, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't qualify for the HoF. It's clearly listed on IMDB as a sci-fi movie, and it has high ratings on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. You dismissed the movie without even giving it a chance.
If you're not going to watch the movie, then dropping out is the right thing to do, but I just thought you should know what someone who's not involved in your little spat thinks about your decision.

Into the Storm (2014)
I'll admit I mainly wanted to see this film because it stars Sarah Wayne Callies, who once was a star on my current favorite series The Walking Dead and is a babe in my book. Oh dear, shallow me. :) But it also features Richard Armitage, who plays Thorin, the main Dwarf in the Hobbit series of movies. But, I liked Twister (1996) and this looked to be lots of the same.
And it basically was. But make no mistake, there's not a lot of character development or straight-up drama, just lots and lots of tornado action and special effects (which are pretty phenomenal). And I had a good time watching it. It concerns tornado hunters tackling two major storm fronts that hit a rural town and surrounding areas, after which there is a brief lull and then the fronts combine!
And as I type this, a giant storm system is still going in my area and has been going on for about four hours. Several tornadoes have come out of this, with hail, flooding, lighting, the works. So I know that a lot of the weather-related science that is brought forth in this movie is dead-on. We've had it before. I live right at the southern tip of the zone in the U.S. know as "Tornado Alley." Tornadoes are no strangers to us. But we've never seen systems move this slow before. Still have friends in the path of danger. I need to call my sister to see if she's all right. Just typing all this to say that it makes me want to go back and watch the movie again, because it will play out more realistic. I watched it just for enjoyment first, but will most probably view it differently now. Anyway, for those of you who haven't been through tornadoes, it will most likely just play as a simple action-based movie. But most of it is realistic, except for the storm at the end (you'll know it when you see it). At least I've never heard of one like that one.

Wait, wait, you're missing the point here - it's not like I'm against animation or anime, when we voted for our top 100 animated films nearly half of my list consisted of anime, if I recall correctly. And it's not like I wasn't looking forward to Gunbuster either, but this guy (besides calling me a whining child) is constantly trying to shove his uber masterpiece of anime down my throat, and I've had enough of it. It's not like his film is the reason I'm not participating.

Wut? Who said I restricted myself only to live action, I spent at least two months preparing for the animation countdown last year, and this included watching several of the Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon and Takahata films, and that's only anime.
Also I find it amusing how you accuse me of dedicating most of my time to watching live action when you yourself said this
Well, that's what happens when you participate in a Hall of Fame you will obviously watch stuff you don't care at all. Anyway, as a film buff I try to grasp anything I watch anyway. Most movies are boring to me anyway. I only really care about 1/10 of the movies I watch.
So obviously what you were trying to claim here is that you mostly care for anime because it's the superior art form. Doesn't that make you close minded as well?
Also, I said I didn't care for your beloved medium because it was fitting with your arrogant attitude and your comment, not because I really meant it, so I think you took that post way too seriously. Basically, I was joking: it's not like I don't care for animation. I just don't care for your nomination in this HOF, and that has nothing to do with the film itself.

Local Hero (1983)
6/10
This film is truly multi-layered and has a rich cast of characters. For this, I was very grateful. Among other things (many other things...it really was multi-layered), it explored the quandary of how to value material possessions and the pursuit of said earthly pleasures. It featured your typical fat-walleted-career-man-with-empty-life encounters a quaint, picturesque village where the residents lead simple yet supposedly satisfying lives. However, the film's exposition of this issue was not nearly so one-dimensional as it could have been, as it portrayed the villagers as complex, rational people with dreams of their own and pressed by the normal exigencies of poverty. The question of whether to spurn the material for the immaterial is constantly answered and then re-answered in contrary throughout the movie. One moment we're cheering for the oilman as he begins to think about not pursuing the deal, the next we're cheering for the townspeople as they contemplate the huge windfall to come... as one character notes, "You can't eat scenery".
All in all though, the movie trended towards the the ABC Family end of the spectrum of complexity and the beginning was truly soporific--it wasn't until the menagerie of characters was fully introduced that I was engaged enough to really watch in earnest.

Only the second film by Tati I've seen. From a comedy perspective I really enjoyed this but I think there is an extra layer to his films that is going over my head at the moment. I think I'll get more out of his films once I watch more or rewatch the ones I've seen so far.

October: Ten Days That Shook the World (1928) - Grigori Aleksandrov/Sergei M Eisenstein (Soviet History)
This is a film about the October Revolution made in a documentary style. Due to its style and the fact that it was made as a celebration rather than as any sort of balanced depiction of events it all comes across a bit dry to an Australian 87 years later with no real desire to celebrate the event. Having said that it's quite interesting and very well made.

Daguerreotypes (1976) - Agnes Varda (French Documentary)
The sixth film I've seen by Varda - four of which have been documentaries - and at the moment I'd have her in my top 10 favourite French directors. Whilst my two favourite films of hers have been dramas she does make very interesting documentaries about topics that don't seem overly interesting on paper. This film is about shop owners on the street that she lived on - that in itself doesn't seem overly fascinating but she managed to really make me interested in the lives of these people.

Flushed /Away (2006)
Charming, fun-filled romp, with an upper-crust pet rat, Roddy, literally flushed away down the toliet, into the sewer and into the world of "real" rats. They have a whole civilization under the streets, with a recreation of London going on. Roddy runs afoul of bad guys who are threatening to destroy the whole city of friends Roddy has made and it's up to him (and a few buddies) to stop them. Great stuff, with lots of good jokes, and some really funny, song-filled slugs. That's right, singing slugs. Co-produced by DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Features, it's a great combo that I highly recommend.

The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) - Peter Greenaway (British Mystery)
As is usually the case with Greenaway's films I didn't completely get his point but as is also usually the case, I really liked this film. His movies are always a work of art and often contain interesting characters and lots of humour.
In this movie an artist is hired to do 10 drawings of an estate - and part of his required payment is sexual favours from the woman who hired him whilst her husband is away.
The characters are great, it all looks beautiful and it's constantly amusing. The only downside is that the actual mystery that the plot focuses on isn't overly interesting. If that part was better this would be a masterpiece.

http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/9/9f/TE51Poster.jpg/300px-TE51Poster.jpg
I loved this film, it seemed to keep getting better and better as it went on and Humphrey Bogart is brilliant as usual. The film leaves no time for any side plot, there's surprisingly no real romance in the film, it's got one focus and it sticks to it and I think it's great. The flashback structure of the film is very clever, the only problem for me is that I was so hooked I forgot it was a flashback.
I suppose it's quite a dark film, Humphrey Bogart is ruthless throughout, slightly violent and cares about nothing but finding a witness and although there are quite a few characters involved, the film explains it self very well and it's actually quite easy to keep up with.
If you're into dark, mystery, no nonsense films then this is one of the best.

It was incredible to get a glimpse of someone doing what they love and how their passion can transform themselves and others around them. The photographs moved me to tears several times throughout. Original score complimented photographs and themes well.

Thanks CR for the recommendation. I liked how during the bus break a man asks for a pack of cigarettes. The cashier says they are in the machine. "Pretty soon they won't need people like us." I only like it because that was 1951, and in the air, they knew slowly machines were replacing people.
There's a murder of a reporter trying to investigate the small town. One man doesn't know who the cowards are - the ones who do bad, or the ones you do nothing about it and just observe and keep quiet. It's nice when the sister's meet, you can tell just by the eyes that she's told her boss a lot of not-so-great things about her sister, who "should call more often." etc.
The wife doesn't want to believe, because she loves the man, so that's the mechanism.
It's kind of a "made-in-the-lab" noir, and I've seen plenty. It's about the KKK, but there's discussion about why the KKK is wrong, didn't hear anything about how racist they are, etc... The acting is pretty lousy, I don't know how Reagan became an actor or President. Actually, I do. He was a friendly witness, a rat for the HUAC....
Still, it's a short movie, broke even with a 5/10.

These movies became progressively uninteresting for me. I defended the first one but couldn't any longer, there is simply too much fat to be trimmed in this series. The fact that I waited this long to see the third one speaks volumes. Still I could see a nice three hour cut of these movies that would make for a really nice prequel. There are things to like among the excess.

Babylon A.D. (2008) - Mathieu Kossovitz (French Science Fiction)
Vin Diesel is just not the guy you want starring in your film. In more of a support role (or just one with not many lines), such as in Pitch Black, he can be great but as the main guy he is usually pretty bad. Nothing about this film was overly memorable and I would doubt that Charlotte Rampling, Gerard Depardieu or Michelle Yeoh have ever been in anything much worse.

Child 44 (2015) - really disappointed. I've waited for this movie for ages and it was terrible.I think the weakest thing was the screenplay which is just a mess. I didn't really get if the film was about crime,USSR and its propaganda politics or story about a guy whose priorities change. And lots of little plot details that are just plain bad.
Acting is okay but the accents couldn't make the story nor the characters believable. I really think that the story had lots of potential but this approach was not good. 2

This is England (2006) - Shane Meadows (British Drama)
Very good movie about a kid growing up in Thatcher's Britain with a great performance from Thomas Turgoose who was only 12 or 13 at the time. Whilst some parts of it felt a bit exaggerated what it did really well was present the skinheads (both good & bad) that take the kid under the wing in a way that makes you have some understanding of why they are what they are and how choices and perhaps simple luck can really influence what path they take.

5 Fingers (1952) - Joseph L Mankiewicz (American Thriller)
WWII thriller starring James Mason and the wonderful Danielle Darrieux. This is the sort of movie that modern Hollywood directors should be forced to watch - there are no special effects, no big emotional moments and no forced happy endings ... there is only a very well told story and it makes for a enjoyable film. It has a great script and contains perhaps Mason's best performance (from what I've seen).

Mona Lisa (1986)
Really well made low-budget and gritty thriller. Bob Hoskins is great, as is Cathy Tyson and Michael Caine's character is played brilliantly as the sleazy underworld boss. For me it's slightly better than The Long Good Friday athough that definately needs a rewatch.

That exact film? Not many but they can still add the stuff that makes it sell - unfortunately these days many Hollywood films only have the stuff that makes them sell but it is surrounded by bad writing, short cuts and generally lazy story telling. It doesn't need to be this way ;)

Dog Day Afternoon (Sidney Lumet, 1975)
http://www.my-newmusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Dog-Day-Afternoon-1975-400x300.jpg
A very good film, a bit of a strange, unexpected story but very good. Al Pacino is brilliant and John Cazale just as good. His character is completely different to Pacino's but is still in a way just as important.
I like the way the film developed, straight into the action, a very different robbery to one you expect to see, it's normal and calm. It doesn't feel at all like a robbery, or that Sonny is doing anything wrong. He had a simple plan and it seemed to be going well. I was feeling relaxed at this point and wondered where the film was going but the situation soon escalated. With no real back up plan in place, you can feel the uneasiness of Sonny and Sal, whilst the hostages are the opposite, they're a lot calmer and don't really feel endangered by the situation.
With the people outside the building and the hostages all pretty much rooting for Sonny, it's a very unusual situation, the negotiating starts and slowly it looks like Sonny has a plan and is going to get what he wants. Whilst we see everything going relatively well for Sonny considering the circumstances, I seem to get a completely different vibe from Sal, which keeps me on edge for the majority of the film thinking that at some point he's going to panic and it will all go wrong. For John Cazale to make you feel so worried throughout the film with so little dialogue is why I think his role is just as important as Al Pacino's.
At this point everything seems to be slowing down. Things have been requested by Sonny and he has agreements in place but it all seems to be at a bit of a stand still. This is when the story goes more into Sonny's personal life, without going to far off track from the robbery it does a very good job of mixing both the robbery and his personal life together and we now seem to understand his reasons for doing it. We learn a lot about his very unexpected personal life.
Now we have the ending, I personally love the ending, it gives you a strange feeling inside I can't explain, kind of brings you back down to reality I guess, a sad but strangely wonderful ending. Simple yes, but executed well, throughout the film you really do have genuine sympathy for both characters.
A great film, two Brilliant performances from Al Pacino and John Cazale that really made you care for the characters. A film which really does build up great suspense and a brilliantly tense atmosphere.

Black Water (2007) - David Nerlich/Andrew Traucki (Australian Horror)
I don't know anything about Nerlich but Traucki is a reasonably promising young Australian director who seems to really like films with scary animals - The Reef was about sharks, The Jungle focuses on a Leopard and Black Water has a crocodile at it's centre.
This movie started off badly - obviously it had a low budget and it really showed. It felt like I was subjecting myself to a 1 movie but once we got to meet the crocodile it was actually pretty good. Much of the second half of the movie is two women in a tree worried about what's in the water below them but it builds the tension well and some of the cinematography involving the crocodile is very good.
It's certainly no masterpiece but for what it was, a monster movie with a micro budget, I quite liked it.

The premise is as up to date as it could be and the way it's told is beyond genius! Every line of dialogue is pure gold, the acting is great, the pacing is perfect and, as in Judgement at Nuremberg, Kramer makes you feel inside the courtroom with a brilliant camera work.
It portrays emotions and ways of thinking so honestly that it's hard not to feel cheering for the defendant and disgusted by such bigotry! Drummond's speech is the apex of a absolutely stunning masterpiece.

I knew this would be a challenging movie for me because I don't care for historical epics, it's almost 3 1/2 hours long, and it's directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, who's movies I've struggled with. Sure enough, I had a hard time putting the pieces of this movie together, and was lost a good amount of the time. Surprisingly to me, it wasn't a difficult watch as there always seemed to be something interesting going on. There are a lot of wow moments, including the start of the movie with the photo below, and also quite a few disturbing scenes. The movie is great to look at and has very natural acting. If I wanted to get everything out of this movie, I'd probably have to read up on it and watch it again soon. Even with me having a hard time following it, I was impressed.

The Silence (1963)
https://flavorwire.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/silence.jpg?w=480&h=360
At the center of the film are two breathtaking performances by two gorgeous actresses.
This was amazing! Definitely one of my favorite Bergman films of what I've seen so far (and I love them all)!
An innocent and adventurous boy observes the resentment and odd friction that defines the relationship of two seemingly hopeless (and obviously faithless) sisters. Both try to cope with the inner pain they feel when they confront themselves too much with the reality of their existence in very different ways. The boy understands there's something wrong, but he's too happily naive to know why...
In a way I feel like there's no film that ever made me understand the concept of hatred more deeply than this one. Bergman isn't afraid to explore the very social-psychological roots of why these two sisters feel so much resentment towards eachother.
Enlightening film. Masterful cinema.

Gatlif is a French/Algerian director of Romani (Gypsy) background. I had heard of him before watching this but had never seen any of his films. It's the story of a girl (Asia Argento) travelling to Romania to find the father of her unborn child who has been expelled from France. For me the highlight of this film was the music - because the guy that Argento's character was looking for was a musician she found herself in a number of locations with amazing Romani music being played. It made for many great moments, particularly in the first half of the film, and when combined with the visuals and the acting it created a very impressive film.

Wow, this is one hell of a bad movie! Both, the premise and the plot itself don't make any sense, whatsoever. The dialogue is bad, the acting is bad (especially Wynona Ryder and Gary Dourdan!), there are no interesting or likeable characters (even Ripley is barely a character anymore) and this strange alien-human-mix-creature at the end looks so terrible! Oddly enough, the movie manages to be somehow somewhat entertaining, although that doesn't keep it from being the worst movie in this saga.

Coherence (2013) 6/10
This film proves that you can do interesting things on a low budget and with little resources if you think outside the box. Although it gets a bit confusing sometimes, this little sci-fi/thriller/mystery is quite a strong debut for James Ward Byrkit. I'm interested to see what he does next.

I didn't like the way it ended but still is a great movie. Javier Bardem's performance was hypnotic.

Poetic and magical; it conjures a feeling of childlike glee in the viewer. This one has aged like the finest of wines.

The film is stupid. Not quite as bad as the first but then not really much better. It comes across as a mix between a sequel and a remake, which doesn't make much sense. The first seven or so minutes seem pretty confusing and pointless to me. Just like in the first one, he spends most his times fighting zombies or 'the woods' in idiotic ways.. I think the way he fights them or the zombies themselves are meant to come across funny in some kind of messed up way but to me I find them boring and repetitive. It might have been funny for about two minutes but doing it for about an hour is in my opinion, slightly overdoing it.
This is not a movie I would recommend to anyone who.. Well, anyone. I mean yeah, overall it was slightly better than the first. There was a few, not many but a few moments that I will admit made me laugh, but the problems that I saw in the first film still remained.
I know a lot of people enjoy these films so this review won't be very popular but I have to be honest. I guess if you're into gory horror films, don't really care much for the story and just enjoy the craziness then this is your type of film, but for me, I think the story is poor and the majority of the film is boring.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg 4
My lord them colors. This definitely has my vote as one of the most colorful films ever created. I wonder how a double feature of this and Juliet of the Spirits would go? This certainly isn't a film for everyone's tastes but if you surrender yourself the experience can prove overwhelming.

Men in Black (1997) - Barry Sonenfeld (American Science Fiction)
Fun but ultimately pretty forgettable sci-fi film. The chemistry between Smith & Jones is good but otherwise it's a bit bland and even though this is perhaps the fifth time I've seen it I don't really remember too much about it.

Flirtation (1933) - Max Ophuls (German Romance)
Ophuls is quickly becoming one of my favourite directors. I didn't like this quite was much as Letter From an Unknown Woman but it's still an excellent film. It's a relatively simple story of an ill-fated love affair but it has great characters and whilst it was slow to get going, by about halfway through I was completely engrossed.

Fantastic film. May I recommend Howard Hawks' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a more conventional musical (in that there's a lot of dialogue and not that many unusual singing moments) but it also has fantastically rich colours.

Thanks for the recommendation Daniel, I'll put it on my watchlist. Been meaning to view more from Hawks, as I've only seen two (Rio Bravo and His Girl Friday)

I wouldn't worry about not liking it. It really isn't a film to everyone's tastes. There are many beloved films that I really don't like such as The Rules of the Game.

Retreat (2011) - Carl Tibbetts (British Thriller)
Cillian Murphy and Thandi Newton are staying in the only house on a small island when they find a soldier washed up on the beach - he tells them stories of a virus spreading through Europe ... Not the most original idea but it does have quite an unusual twist which I'm not sure that I've seen before. There are only really three characters for much of the movie which creates quite a lot of tension and it does well in terms of making you think about whether the soldier's story is true or not.
Overall not a perfect movie but decent enough.

Just like Seven Psychopaths. Funny, violent, and a great story all around. I can't believe i've never watched this movie before I now regret having not seen it earlier. Farrell and Gleeson were great and Fiennes was brilliant like he always is. If you haven't seen this movie i highly recommend it.

Rhino Season (2012) - Bahman Ghobadi (Turkish Drama)
The first movie by Kurdish Iranian director Ghobadi since leaving Iran. I'd seen four of his films prior to watching this and was quite surprised by its style - his other films have always been very realistic depictions of people in Iran (mostly Kurds) and their struggles. This however was a complete style change - it was one of the most visually impressive films I've ever seen. Every shot is amazing. I guess it shows what a director used to making great movies on no budget can do in a more open and financially supportive environment.
The downside is that Ghobadi lost some of the "heart" from his other films. I was never overly engaged by the story or the characters and that left me quite disappointed. Visually it's a masterpiece but overall I only found it to be a pretty good movie.

A light hearted road movie with an interesting collection of characters on a bus trip. It's an enjoyable film with an extra layer of depth provided by the different character types that give a glimpse of a Japan going through lots of changes.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1967)
http://i.imgur.com/o0TkTzJ.jpg
"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" is different from other Westerns- it's set during the end times of the grand West. Things are changing and heroes and outlaws alike need to adapt or die out. John Ford describes the change very well, he is a master of creating harmony between the characters and constructing a deep film having a genre usually filled with mostly just shootouts. I hardly consider this to be Ford's best but every one of his films I've seen is wonderful. This one is no exception.
