War for the Planet of the Apes 2
A movie that tries desperately to appear "meaningful" and "profound" and "relevant," but ends up falling flat on its face. For a film with so much attention to motion capture (which is, by all means, very impressive), it's surprising to see it be so...boring.
Yeah, it really is a shame how it turned out...

This was a blind watch off the noirs list, but I knew I might be in for a treat during the opening credits when I saw it starred James Mason and was directed by Max Ophuls. Like a lot of 40's movies I've been watching, this one clocks in at about 80 minutes, and in this particular case I wished it was longer. You've got a teenage girl from a good home dating an older scumbag. There's an incident and suddenly the mother is involved with mobsters and blackmail. No need to tell anymore; it's well worth watching and there's a perfect copy on YouTube-

Flatliners
(Joel Schumacher)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7b/Flatliners.jpg/220px-Flatliners.jpg
3
Joel Schumacher is a competent director who gets a bad rap due to his legacy in the Batman franchise. A quick look at his filmography shows some really good movies, Flatliners is among them.
"Today is a good day to die" is the opening line to this film, where four medical students plan to kill themselves for a short period of time to experience the other side, look for proof of life after death. Each one experiences something different and begin to hallucinate troubling images back in the living world. Maybe they brought something back they shouldn't have.
Flatliners has a really interesting premise and one that could be visually stunning. The film doesn't wow with the visuals, but Schumacher manages to keep the train on the tracks here and delivers a creepy film with memorable performances. Kiefer Sutherland plays Nelson, the man behind the entire idea of flat-lining. He's driven by the need to know and his passion consumes him to the point of no return. Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, Oliver Platt and William Bladwin fill out the rest of the cast, all doing fine work. Each one plays into their acting characteristics, for better or worse.
The characters seem to have a disregard for the fact that they legitimately die for a few moments, so they begin to wage their time under. "3 minutes"..."3:30"..."5 minutes" We find out who is too scared to be dead longer, or who has a total disregard for their own lives. Flatliners is a great idea that was executed moderately well. There is nothing wrong with the film, but nothing memorable about it either. The plot seems to reuse the same dilemmas over and over for these characters which becomes a little redundant. Flatliners is a good film, but it should be a great film.
I want to see a Flatliners film from Tarsem Singh. That would take me to the edge of their experiences for sure.

12 Academy Award nominations with Jane Wyman winning best actress as a young deaf-mute woman who lives with her father and aunt in Nova Scotia. She is befriended by a nice doctor who is an outsider to the rest of the folks in the village. The dummy gets raped and pregnant, and the finger pointing begins. Perhaps it leads to murder? Great performances, a good story, and a nice location. My wife enjoyed it too, not a common outcome.

A Time To Kill
(Joel Schumacher)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/60/Time_to_kill_poster.jpg/220px-Time_to_kill_poster.jpg
3
It's pure coincidence that I did a Joel Scumacher double feature this weekend and that both films starred Kiefer Sutherland. Even though he played a character with anger issues in Flatliners, he's downright terrifying in A Time To Kill, which is something that Sutherland does so well.
A 10 year old black girl is brutally raped and hanged by a couple of rednecks. The girl survives and identifies her assailants. While on their way to the courthouse they are shot to death by the girl's father. Now her father is the one on trial and a young hot shot attorney must do what he can to make sure he doesn't get the death penalty. The case has world wide coverage and it ignites the Klu Klux Klan to come back and cause trouble.
I was eight years old when this film came out and I clearly recall seeing the trailer on television. There were three scenes that stood out to me; Samuel L. Jackson shooting people with an assault rifle, the burning cross on the front lawn and the famous line "Yes, they deserved to die and I hope they burn in hell!" All three moments in the film took me back to my youth, which is a strange sensation for this type of movie. Going in, I had no idea about the KKK angle and thought it was a straight up court room drama. Seeing the actions of those character dawning the robes was terrifying and I can't imagine the fear I'd have being a black person in the south in this time.
Strong performances all around, with Jackson being a quiet stand-out, believe it or not. I only wish that Donald Sutherland had a little more to do here. He's part of the team, but is never around doing anything. It's easy to see that this film launched McConaughey's career and rightly so, he delivers a strong performance as a man defending a killer. The film constantly seems to ask the viewer "What if it were your daughter?". Many people say they would do the same. A great monologue at the end of the film is delivered by McConaughey, but the ending lacks some power. "Now imagine if she were white." Is that line all it took to convince a jury? Seems odd and the film could be used as a case for presenting vigilantism in a positive light. Is this a time to kill someone?
Typical courtroom dramas showcase a lot of yelling, shocking reveals and emotional tears. This film hits those notes as well and if it were not for the heightened tension of the KKK aspect, it might fall into "another courtroom movie" and nothing else. The added danger to the character's lives up the steaks for us. These people, with these convictions, exist and they are more terrifying than any boogeyman under your bed.

I think the poster is better than the film. Kind of reminiscent of the old, old days of video games. You'd have this awesome airbrushed cover art for a badly coded 8 bit game.
Anyway, better than average, but compared to the body of Ti West's other work it's missing a lot. It made me think of what might happen if Clerks met Ghost Story. It's largely tongue in cheek but had a solid enough foundation that made me wish he'd gone more House of the Devil with it.
I finally finished it though. The 'twist ending' was so cliched I'm not sure it's even a twist anymore.

I think this belongs here rather than on the TV show forum, because this clearly was a 90 minute movie that was chopped up into four episodes. I can only guess why Netflix decided to do this (testing the waters?), but the episodes end far too abruptly and the pacing feels really odd; which could have been avoided if just left as a straight 90 minutes.
Besides that, I was really impressed by Castlevania. Though its been a solid 2 to 3 years since I've played any video game, during my youth I was a pretty big fan of the Castlevania series (I've been itching to play Symphony of the Night as of late). Richard Armitage as Trevor Belmont is what shines here; though I would have enjoyed more screen time with Dracula. The music is good, but not nearly as good as a Castlevania game. The violence, for lack of a better term, is straight up awesome. This is probably my favorite video game adaptation ever. Can't recommend it enough.

From the noirs list, Johnny has everything a man could ask for; a pretty wife, a good son, and a fine job in the insurance business. Yet, he feels stuck in a rut and bored with it all. Don't mess around ahole! He meets a dame on the job, but she already has a man about to get out of jail and another one stalking her. I liked this movie, and could relate to a simple man finding trouble. I thought it worked well as a cautionary tale.

I want to see a Flatliners film from Tarsem Singh. That would take me to the edge of their experiences for sure.
I just went to check who was directing the Flatliners film coming out in a couple of months (since I knew it wasn't him but couldn't remember who it actually was) and noticed that the Wikipedia description lists it as a sequel. When I saw the trailer, I honestly thought it was a remake.
While I haven't really liked any of the fiilms I've seen from Singh, he does have a really nice visual style, so I wouldn't mind him being in charge since the current Flatliners sequel looks very bland.
Taxi Driver (1976):
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/4b/c2/71/4bc271bb749dc2d264093c6d31942c3c.jpg
So I just saw "Taxi Driver" for the first time and it was really good. We follow a taxi driver (hence the title) named Travis who's as distant from reality as I was from his character, he sees his environment as filth, and he is desperate to find a pure being in this filth to connect with, but it seems that nobody fits his demanded criteria whether they're good people or not, everyone looks speaks and acts the same in his eyes, resulting to his isolation from society.
Essentially, Travis is out of sync of verity and reality, and that is not only represented by his socially backward ways and actions, but also by Martin Scorsese's direction, there are numerous shots where the attention should be on our main character, but the camera drifts away to another direction, predicting his next move, which even shows how out of sync of the film he is.
I personally saw the misanthropic's behaviour as a result of his services during the war, where human connection is absent and human destruction is all there is. Travis' built up and repressed hatred gradually ascends to the point where there is no option but to let it all out, and this is where I was a bit disappointed by the film, I was hoping for the story to go in a specific direction which I find quite fitting, but it chooses not to, sure they can write their story however they want, but in my opinion it would of been an overall better film had it went the way I wanted it to.
I also found the music extremely annoying, not saying that the piece itself was bad, but hearing the same decent instrumental over 60 times really got under my skin and became distracting. I just wish it was used sparingly. Another complaint I have is how some symbolism in the film got in the way of its logic, for example, near the end, when Travis has shaved his head and attended the public rally, he is positioned in a way that makes him stand out from the crowd, but how come the Secret Service agent hasn't noticed him when they have already encountered each other earlier in the film, I mean Travis is even wearing the same clothes, he only puts 2 and 2 together once Travis attempts to make his move, this is only a minor nitpick and it didn't have much of an impact on my experience though.
I'm happy I finally saw this immensely beloved movie, I wasn't disappointed nor totally fulfilled which is completely satisfying.

I rate it nearly the same 8.0 / 10 or 4
I think what i really like about Taxi Driver is that it really hits the zeitgeist of contemporary America or America in the 70's with a focal point of alienation from society. While i have seen technically more brilliant movies, Taxi Driver really hits the nerve in more than one aspect.

I watched this because it's on the top 100 Westerns list. I certainly don't think it belongs there, not only because there's easily 100 better movies that should be there, but also because this is a comedy. Jane Russell plays Calamity Jane. She doesn't appear to be much of an actress, but she was fine enough for this role. This is Bob Hope's movie. I thought he was very funny and that kept me entertained throughout. There was also a great musical number.

Deepwater Horizon
(Peter Berg)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/66/Deepwater_Horizon_%28film%29.jpg
3
The second of three films in which Berg and Wahlberg recreate tragic American history, the other two being Lone Survivor and Patriot's Day. Something about these two guys working together brings out the inner American, where we rally behind them and cheer USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!.
The Deepwater Horizon is a oil drilling rig, drilling off the southern coast of Louisiana on a contract with BP. Workers assigned to test a certain aspect of the drilling site are leaving early and both Wahlberg and Kurt Russell question why. They find out that BP managers are behind it because they want to drill immediately, due to the team being so many days behind schedule. As we all know, things don't go so well for the gentlemen and a massive eruption cripples the drilling station, setting off massive explosions and killing those near it. Now these men and women must fight for survival.
When the BP oil spill happened, all I knew about was the millions upon millions of gallons of oil being spilled into the gulf. Thousands of wildlife dead, homes to them destroyed and the entire act being called the worst environmental disaster in American history. I did not hear about any deaths among the oil drilling rig. So when this film came out, I was asking myself, is this a fictionalized event about the incident? Yes and no. These people did exist, these people did die and I finally have another side to the story.
Wahlberg plays the hero, getting people to safety while battling the wild fire that takes over the entire rig. Expect the same old from him, he does his job adequately here. Russell is in charge and instantly has conflict with the BP managers, played by a sleazy John Malkovich. The BP guys are instantly painted as the bad guys here, they wanted to make money, they didn't know what they were doing. Kate Hudson has the thankless role of concerned wife on the phone. The film is more concerned with spectacle than character. I suspect those wanting to see this are okay with that?
The special effects work well enough to make you believe these people are in danger. The film is a lot of build up to the event, then when it happens, I couldn't help but feel that it sped by quickly and they were off the rig. Berg crafts a suspenseful sequence building up to the chaos and when it hits the fan, it's an intense scene. Well staged and brought to life. I applaud the look of the film, as it didn't feel fake in any of the scenes. The sense of danger was always there.
As was Lone Survivor and I'm sure Patriot's Day, this film is pro-America. There is a particular shot of the American flag blowing in the wind with the rig engulfed in flames directly behind it. The silhouette of a man stands in front watching in horror, tears down his face. Too much? Yes. Berg definitely tries to tug at the patriotic heartstrings here by having 'everyday Americans' on board, but we all know Mark Wahlberg ain't no everyday American. So the emotional aspect loses the spark and the film deflates even further into what I mentioned earlier, this film is all spectacle, no character.
This is my favourite entry. I hate the first film, this one had a little more fun with the subject matter and the kills were more entertaining. You're not missing anything with the third.
Haven't seen any of them but i actually remember there being controversy in this thread when Redwell (i'm almost positive it was him) said he preferred the sequels over the original. So it's funny you bring that up.
Unless i'm mixing it up with another slasher series which is entirely possible.

Chaos Theory
(Marcos Siega)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/40/Chaos_theory.jpg/220px-Chaos_theory.jpg
2.5
It is extremely hard to be able to blend two different genres together and pull it off. Hot Fuzz did it with action & comedy, Evil Dead II did it with horror & comedy. Now here comes Chaos Theory, which tries to do the same blending of genres, this time it's drama & comedy, but Chaos Theory goes heavier on the drama, which took me by surprise.
It's a story about a man who is so obsessed with time that he has to make sure every part of his day follows a specific routine, which he has timed out on small cue cards. Something 'chaotic' happens and his life is turned upside down. He now lives his life in the moment. What I didn't expect was that the so called 'chaotic' thing that happens, was actually a heart-breaking moment that I would never wish upon anybody.
Chaos Theory does have some comedic elements in it, but it's mostly a drama. Those little comedic moments are so out of place, yet oddly, I still laughed at them. Which made watching this movie an awkward experience. The cast includes Ryan Reynolds and Stuart Townsend. Reynolds is known for his comedy, but he pulls off a good dramatic role here, but doesn't quite hold the entire film together. Townsend plays his role at certain points at two polar opposites of the spectrum. A revelation happens to his character and the second half of the film he's completely different. I enjoyed his second half more because he became more likable and he actually had more to work with.
The cast do what they can to hold this conventional film together, they don't quite manager to pull it off. The film definitely wants you to let go of the organizational aspects of life and live a little. Enjoy things outside of your routine. A good message, in an average film.

During the 50's to 60's we had a lot of Yakuza flicks directed by a lot of great directors like Seijun suzuki, Kiyoshi Saeki, Masahiro Shinoda and many others, this genre started to change after Kinji Fukasaku appeared with his raw vision of the yakuza, then a new wave of directors appeared and the yakuza genre become more violent, more about the mans than the yakuza itself, in middle 80's the japanese public was dominated by womans that used to choose the films (like Orson Welles said that the US was in the 30's and 40's), so of course yakuza films wasn't popular anymore, (Tarantino said that Dog movies and romance movies was the big films in the 90's in Japan) then Takeshi Kitano appeared with Sonatine in 1993! This guy alone, brought the Yakuza films back with his own vision, He put together the Ninkyo eiga style (50's and 60's yakuza flicks) and the Jitsuroku eiga (70's and 80's) and created something unique. This wasn't a simple brutal tale about the Yakuza Code or about that violent world. This film is more about how the human being in constant contact with the violence ends up making this brutality a futile thing, Kitano films the violence in a stylized way, showing us in a very caricature way all the brutality of a shootout. It's incredible how he manages to extract beauty from the extreme, this movie had a moderate success in Japan but with the international success of HANA-BI in 1998 (Golden Lion in Venice Film Festival), Sonatine was revisited by many critics and finally reached the status it deserved , A masterpiece!
I strongly recommend to any movie lover! One of my favorites of all time!

Paterson (2016) by Jim Jarmusch
With Paterson, Jarmusch, has made a very reflective, poignant and meditative movie with everyday life in the rust belt as a focal point. The attitude in this film diverts from mainstream (Hollywood) cinema in the sense that it takes it time to be reflexive in everyday life without the big turning points, climaxes or action scenes. The aspect that it actually takes time to think and to sense is the force of Jarmusch's pictures and from an existentialist viewpoint it is the force of many independent pictures. The reflexive attitude towards film, life and the experience of being in the world is what makes me want to divulge in movies and what makes this a picture worth seeing.
On a side note, it reminded me of one of Jarmusch's older pictures Mystery Train which also has a really reflexive attitude towards being in this world.

Wonder Woman: B-
I heard so much hype about it, but what was so great? I like the classic wonder woman character and all the slow-mo scenes of her destroying nazi's, but where was the storyline? Just like that horrible Superman vs. Batman movie, they just resorted to a ton of CGI to finish the last 20 minutes.
Three Colours: Blue (1993):
http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/movie/movie_poster/three-colors-trilogy-blue-white-red/large_cfMH99K5BAHBLYui4jKcf0lOSSY.jpg
So I just saw "Blue" the first entry of Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Three Colours" trilogy and it was fantastic. According to this masterful director's interpretation of the French flag, blue means freedom (liberté) which is one of the three elements of the revolutionary motto, and it comes to no surprise that this film is all about liberation.
Julie, a good and generous woman is left traumatised after surviving a tragic car crash that lead to her husband and daughter’s death, she then tries to liberate herself from the pain of her loss by throwing away her old life, she isolates her friends, her acquaintances and her secret lover, and chooses to live her new life indifferently.
After moving to a new apartment, she encounters a prostitute neighbour who is basically a reflection of her condition, she as well chooses to liberate herself by living her life carelessly, but once her past catches up to her she finds herself trapped, this might be Julie's eventual fate. She also regularly goes to the swimming pool in order to escape from time by surrounding herself with the blue water, but that never puts an end to the following and haunting memory in the back of her head.
"Blue" would have been a completely different film in the hands of a different director, Kieslowski merges visuals with music superbly, in order to perfectly portray the state of our main character, and also make her as understandable as possible. He usually sets our attention on banal happenings that on the surface seem insignificant, such as a sugar cube soaking up coffee or an old woman using a recycling bin, these little details only help to make us understand Julie even more, she tries to forget the overwhelming thoughts that consume her mind by focusing on minor details. Meanwhile, the haunting music in the film serves as a narrative approach, it is a constant reminder of her husband, and it is a constant reminder of her failed attempt at repressing her grief.
I ultimately loved this film and its taken direction of handling such themes, and if "White" and "Red" are remotely as good as this phenomenal entry, then "Three Colours" might just become my favourite trilogy.

Paris When It Sizzles (1964)
Delightful fluff with Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. Hepburn is hired as a temporary secretary to Holden's screenplay writer. It's a Friday (in Paris of course) and the two have until Sunday to finish the screenplay that Holden hasn't even actually started. The producer of the film (called "The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower") doesn't even know what the film will be about...he's entrusted Holden to produce the screenplay and Holden has been spending the money he's been paid for several months, having a grand time around Paris, writing nothing. So he starts making up scenarios in the script off the cuff, with Hepburn throwing in her own ideas while she types and he drinks. The best part of the movie is while they write, they imagine themselves in whatever adventures they write. Some are silly (like Holden as a vampire!), some are great fun (with spies chasing them), and the movies has lots of self-references (I guess these days you'd call it "meta" but I'm sick of that word). For example, Holden has an apartment where he tells Hepburn, "That rather grotesque object looming so formidably on the horizon is the Eiffel Tower. I had it moved there to remind me what town I'm in," which is actually a joke about how movies in Paris always have a window that you can see the Eiffel Tower from.
Jokes like that abound here, and the line between what they're writing and what they're imagining sometimes blurs. And of course, both in the script and when they're not writing, they start to fall for each other. It's a good movie. Not Hepburn's best, nor Holden's for that matter but they definitely have chemistry (Holden was reportedly really in love with Hepburn going back from their time filming Sabrina, with Hepburn not returning the feelings, at least in the story I've heard). Still, they work well together in the film and it's lots of fun. Don't take it seriously but try to keep up with the self-references and you'll have a great time. Also, look for Tony Curtis, Mel Ferrer (Hepburn's then-husband), and, in a very small appearance, Marlene Dietrich.

As one of the only fans of the 90's remake starring Nic Cage and David Caruso, I had high hopes for this one. Victor Mature is excellent as a con doing what he has to in order to turn his life around. Richard Widmark was nominated for an Academy Award in his screen debut playing a real psycho. It's a memorable character, but I thought he was a little over the top. This is a pretty nasty movie for it's time, a definite plus for me. I thought it was missing the sharp noir dialogue and alluring femme fatale I've grown accustomed to. It still has enough going for it to be a very good flick.

Three Colours: White (1994):
https://image.tmdb.org/t/p/original/oESte34l7Rn7Ec00Z0b7wi17zjm.jpg
So I just saw "White" the second part of Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Three Colours" trilogy and it was great. This time the main theme of the film is the second element of the revolutionary motto: equality (égalité), the latter is all and only what our main character (Karol) wants from his journey.
After being summoned to a Paris divorce court, Karol, a Polish immigrant, is begging his French wife for time and ultimately another chance for her love, she then humiliates him on numerous occasions until he has had enough and decides to go back to his home land.
In France, Karol is embarrassed, broke, alone, and basically not on the same level as everybody else, especially his wife, even our first introduction to him sets the tone of what kind of character he is, where a simple pigeon lands its droppings on him, after that is where the theme of equality comes in place, he becomes determined to achieve such thing between him and his wife, and how he does so is quite the fascinating plan, and that's what's great about the film, you could never guess where the story is going.
There are numerous irrational and unrealistic moments throughout the movie, and despite the film not acknowledging them, I still didn't think that realism was essential or was what the director was going for, besides, they are only there to advance the poetic point that Kieslowzki is making, sure a little bit of suspension of disbelief is acquired, but at least there is a purpose to it and I believe it’s worth it.
Although Kieslowski was able to hold my attention by his particular arrangement of background details too, I didn't find him nearly as impressive as he was in "Blue", just like I didn't find the story as engaging or compelling as in the preceding film.
There is also a lack of clarity near the end of the film, and not in a good way, it felt as if an essential two minute chunk of footage was cut out during the editing process, and I'm not sure why…
Overall, "White" was a unique episode of the trilogy, it differs from its predecessor on many things such as the tone which in this entry was somewhat comedic, I thought some of these choices worked, others didn't, but no matter what they are all intentional, which makes me much more curious to see what "Red" will be like.

I recently watched Match Point and have rewatched it several times since!
I've never seen anything quite like it...
Usually I rate a film highly based predominantly on its aesthetics but this film (despite looking good[though not spectacular]) has made me look at films entirely differently... by dazzling me with a totally immersive plot and incredible screenplay made better by outstanding performances, especially by Jonathon Rhys Meyers who I've never seen before in a movie, to the best of my knowledge.
But the writing is just pure epic, Woodie Allen has never wowed me before but I respect his creativity in his 'classics' Manhattan and Annie Hall, but after watching Match Point I have become obsessed with this whole new genre to me, which involves class, relationships, deceit and the divide between love and lust.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) - rating_1_5
The previews for this film were giving me major Jupiter Ascending vibes, and for good reason.
If you liked Jupiter Ascending that would probably be a good thing, but it wasn't for me. While Valerian gets points for interesting alien designs and a good general concept, its horribly written romance subplot and a lack of chemistry between the lead actors really drags everything down. The film felt incredibly bloated, and would've benefited from more time in the cutting room. There are glimpses of an interesting universe in Valerian, so it's a shame that the film failed to put any of it to good use.

I reckon there's a variety of factors at work there. Nolan himself is a filmmaker whose work ostensibly bridges the gap between accessible blockbusters and "intelligent" cinema, so his films have a broader appeal as a result (as well as the Batman franchise having its own well-established fanbase who would give a significant boost to his trilogy's popularity). Plus, IMDb's algorithms weigh individual ratings differently depending on whether or not the user is a "regular", so there's bound to be some overlap when the regular users' demographics match up to the demographics that are most likely to rate Nolan highly (i.e. dudes under 30) and end up pushing his films higher up the ladder.

Solace
(Afonso Poyart)

I felt like I could have been the third psychic in this film as I saw everything this film was going to do before it happened. Solace tries to be many things, but fails to be a poor imitation of all of them. A great cast is weighed down by bad direction, uninspired chase sequences and Anthony Hopkins bad hair.
John lives in isolation, the death of his daughter was too much for him to handle. His old friend Joe asks him to come back to help them catch a serial killer. John has a gift, he's psychic and Joe wants to use this to their advantage in catching the killer. There's only one problem, the killer is psychic too and far more powerful than John.
Interesting set-up, but the film never reaches its full potential, instead in meanders around in mediocrity that it becomes a chore to get through to the credits. The film starts to gain momentum when the killer, played by Colin Farrell turns up, but by then I feel like I already had checked out and was more interested in seeing what Hopkins' hair would do next, instead of the story.
Visually, Poyart steals from the Nicolas Cage crapfest, Next, to showcase possible outcomes for the characters. The rest of the film feels like it could have been made for basic television. It's a surprise to me that there is a talented cast here because the material shouldn't warrant one. Along with Hopkins and Farrell, it also stars Jeffery Dean Morgan and Abbie Cornish. A talented cast does not equal great performances though and Cornish deserves the "all hustle" award for trying, but ultimately doing nothing.
Apparently the first draft of this script was written to be a sequel to Se7en. After whatever happened to stop that, it was turned into this. Interesting premise, stalled by everything that managed to put it to the screen.

- Strange Magic is a film my girlfriend enjoyed that she has tried to make me watch for a couple of months now. Knowing the abysmal reception and, simply put, how bad it looked, I wasn't interested. I watched it though, and yeah, it was about what I expected. The animation looks very, very low-budget and abysmal. The characters are archetypes, but, more than that, the subplots are loosely threaded, all about squeezing as many musical performances as possible without it being too much of an off-put. This might not have been that bad a fact, but it isn't even actual original music, instead, it's covers of popular music, and that makes the offering seem all the more lazy, it's like a cheaper, less profitable Trolls.
- I don't have a whole lot to say about The Little Prince. This is the second French animated film I've watched this month. The film had a lot of known names to its cast and I enjoyed its animation and it definitely had a certain charm about it. Truth be told, if I were asked what I thought about it, I'd say I am somewhere in the middle, but there's a caveat to my opinion as well. I watched this film at around midnight, I had woke up the night before at around five in the afternoon, then, worked a whole shift from 10pm to 7am, then, stayed up til midnight. In other words, I was up for around 30 hours, and I was on the brink of passing out the entire time that film played. I don't know that I can really criticize or even praise something I was only vaguely conscious for.

Blind watch, although I brilliantly guessed correctly that it had something to do with a bicycle and thievery. For a while I was wondering why this jerkoff couldn't just borrow a bike for work with all the people he knows, but then the hopelessness was presented so well that I bought into it. The guy was still a jerkoff, and in fact everyone in the movie but the kid was a miserable bastard. It's such a beautifully filmed movie and I thought much of it was masterful. I felt that it got off track a little bit about halfway through when he followed the old guy to the church, and that seemed to kick off some time as a fairly conventional narrative. A great finale made up for it.

Not one of the best from the noirs list or one of Bogie's best, but still pretty damn good. He's in the military and on assignment in the U.S. with a buddy, and the buddy ends up expired. Perhaps there's more murder to come, and maybe even a gal who's trouble? I didn't think it was especially memorable or exciting, but it's solid in every way.

I went into it not knowing much about it. I was expecting a more traditional QT flick with lots of action. A hour and a half through I started to get disappointed. I didn't realize until shortly after that this was more of a murder/mystery. Sort of wished I knew that going into it so I wasn't expecting something completely different.
That said, it was fairly good for me. Definitely not his best movie (maybe not even top 5) but it was solid. Sort of a gory Agatha Christie novel. :D

Straight Outta Compton (2015)
Compiling a whole life, a whole career, a life changing life-long event, so to speak, into such a smooth but energetic movie that hits its structural beats almost as perfectly as the timeless classic music played - THAT is a successful film.
Some of the minority/underdog stuff and crooked cops elements are admittedly a little overplayed as is the "bad guys" in the story that are not our "heroes" whereas the latter also emphasizes said word a little too much at times. BUT what I can't take from this movie, even here on a rewatch, is how smooth it plays out. The story is structured and edited in such a way that I still get surprised at how fast we get to the end and how I'm basically never ever bored. It builds so well and keeps itself interesting. At least for me. But that's one hell of an accomplishment; making a 2 hour and 47 minute film (directors cut) feel like nothing - you know you did it right.
A fantastic modern biopic that is way better and more successful than everyone ever thought it would be. Just like N.W.A....

The Pride of the Yankees (1942)

https://anotherfilmblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/pride2.jpg
This is a true story about the life and career of legendary baseball player Lou Gehrig, who tragically passed away a year before the film's release. This movie is on the top 100 cheers list, and I could understand that perfectly if it wasn't for the ending. There are very good performances from Gary Cooper in the lead role, Tereasa Wright as his wife, and Walter Brennan as a sportswriter and friend. The real treat though was Babe Ruth being in the movie, and not archive footage but actually acting. He played himself of course but that was pretty awesome. Unlike a lot of sports related movies, I'd more recommend this to sports fans, and more specifically American sports fans. It's not like there isn't plenty more to the movie, but at least for me there was a lot of nostalgia related to my enjoyment. The Yankees still suck, obviously.

HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS
http://i.imgur.com/FHPH5ML.jpg
How should I try to review this movie? It doesn't really feel like a feature film as much as it feels like recordings from the Hell's Angels' archive. And that's not such a weird thing since Richard Rush himself, a Hells Angels member, directed this movie.
There is no story or a plot to speak of. No, instead what he has tried to do is recreate as best as possible how the Hells Angels gang live their daily lives. Notoriously spoken of as possibly the most controversial biker gang of all time, this movie doesn't debunk those claims. In fact, sometimes he even does a too good job at showing that! Just as you would expect, they are as loud, obnoxious and rude as humanly possible. And to add to that, also very dangerous. Even though the cops and other men of authority are depicted as jerks, you can't really blame them for their hostility. Hell, they managed to kill two people! Both times by accident, but still. They are strong. They are not to be messed with. You as much as badmouth them, you better watch out. At first, it just starts off as a fun romp, with them having fun partying and making fools of themselves. And then... it continues with them having fun partying and making fools of themselves. Yeah, I didn't say this movie had substance, only that it felt realistic. But where it shines is whenever it focuses on Poet and Shill. Shill is the tough kitten with an attitude, but something doesn't feel quite right about her obedience towards Buddy (even though she doesn't really like him), while Poet is the shy but ambitious young soul who isn't sure if he's wound up with the wrong company or if this is the only place where he will fit in. These two characters are the only really interesting ones in the whole movie, while with most of others it barely scratches the surface. Buddy has a scene where he explains what he feels about marriage, but other than that he's just shown as someone in a position of power. The fight between him and Poet at the end is very exciting nevertheless.
The budget is noticably pretty low, but it works to the movie's advantage since it adds to the "rough 'n tough" feeling it's going for. Sure, the audio isn't the best, but with subtitles I could make out what they said. The direction by Rush is at times stylistic, other times just really wonky. What the hell was up with that abrupt ending? That was so bizzarre! The editing is also weird many times, like how in one scene it at first cuts back and forth between a big brawl and two people having sex, then just cuts away completely to the fight. I have no idea why they did that. It could also be too choppy at times, with more cuts taking place than really are neccessary.
The cast is who deserves the most credit here. All of the Hells Angels members were believably portrayed, and Adam Roarke, Sabrina Scharf and of course Jack Nicholson were so good that whenever the film became a little too in love with its rocky style, they were still fun to watch.
Worth seeing for Jack Nicholson fans, and those interested in the infamousy of Hell's Angels. In terms of biker flicks there are more wellmade ones (Easy Rider for example, which was more than just a story of bikers), but probably sloppier ones as well.

I got this as a blind buy during the 50% off Criterion sale. What a wonderful surprise and joy this film was. Extremely quirky, part western, part gangster film, part art house and "wavish", but great comedy with hints of romance. I'd definitely recommend the film.

This Beautiful Fantastic
Came across this movie by chance and glad I did. There was so much I felt that could have been better and tweaked but overall I enjoyed it. The highlight for me was Tom Wilkinson. One of his top performances. The relationship he had with Jessica Brown Findlay was touching. Typical "grumpy old man has a heart" character but played it perfectly.
Not the greatest or most memorable film you'll ever see but definitely worth a shot if you dig rom-coms.

Spider-man: Homecoming falls in line with the rest of these horrid Summer Blockbuster Comic Book films, with wafer-thin plot development at it's disposal but an abundance of CGI to help glue it altogether. I recalled it in the movie actually, it was so very meta; a ferry, (metaphor for a decent script or vision), is cut in half but spiderman's computer generated glue, (CGI) attempts to hold it together to not much success. This is the folly of every single one of these films, since the days of Jaws and Star Wars, mainstream American cinema has been about the money men marketing toys and blankets and tooth paste to the American public. It's not a creative process anymore, it's all about money. Safe scripts, no thought provoking message, haphazard acting, throw in as much "shiny" CGI effects into a two hour film and can it. There's your mainstream American film.
From outset, actors can hardly act because most of their surroundings are green screen. Nothing real to work with, so if joe-blow wanted to make a movie with his own friends I'd imagine he'd discover his actors acted just like professional ones these days. We are given one overriding theme in the script, that of Micheal Keaton and Tom Holland, but most of it is a long pubescent whine coming from Tom Holland aka Spiderman.
The story, outside the main story, seems to be an inner collection of smaller stories. Watch Peter Parker fawn endlessly over his crush Liz. Watch Peter Parker botch his first attempts at crime stopping. Or Michelle acting weird. Frankly, I don't care. It didn't mean anything to me or the script, if this is attempts at character illustration and building, come on... you have a budget, do something important with it!
The one thing to this films credit though was a technique utilizing Hitchcockian suspense. Whereby the audience knows, (and Parker knows), something that the Keaton's character does not. And they rode it out appropriately. They even crescendoed the moment auditorially which I thought was a nice touch.
Outside this the film was an abysmal bore. I'm not amused by "shiny" cinema. If you can call it cinema... it's more of a "product" than a film. If film were food, I chose a nice French Restaurant where it seems the masses still love their Mickey D's. Not for me.

This metaphor falls apart when you factor in that the ferry is ultimately saved by Iron Man and his vast array of (CGI-rendered) gadgets like rocket boosters and lasers, implying that the "film" isn't saved by CGI but instead by...even more CGI? The rest of your review there reads like more of the same - throwing out concepts but not fleshing them out too well. Seems a bit rich when you're trying to criticise a movie for being empty and meaningless.

Lowbrow American comedy is what I like, although many of the comedies of today try pushing the button so much that it becomes tiring. This one could have pushed it a little more. This has a pretty good cast featuring Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Jennifer Aniston, T.J. Miller, and a whole load of other familiar faces who all have their moments. It's nothing special but I laughed a decent amount and had a good time.

I was handing out constructive criticism. Out_of_Sheep's criticisms are somewhat fair, but lack clarity, and as noted the key metaphor had issues and there was just a lot of general grievances about "Mickey D cinema". There's potential there, but as you can tell (I think?) it helps to be able to back up your superiority complex.
Also, "he" will suffice.

I don't even know where to start with this. The closest I could come to describing it would be a mix between the hipster-wilderness of Where the Wild Things Are and the comic coco-loco craziness of that episode of The Mighty Boosh where they're stranded on a desert island and start talking to coconuts. But with more bodily functions. It's partly original and interesting and partly exceedingly tiresome, so I'm going to go for a failry ambivalent 3.

The journalist undergoes a transformation that turns him into a primitive beast who bites his date one night and in turn, when the date is assaulted by three local campus bullies, she infects them and they go on a rampage during a Halloween party. The journalist's best friend and his girlfriend are the only ones who can stop them all.
Low-budget but pretty good special effects with an excellent score from Goblin's Claudio Simonetti drive the film.

Director: Sydney Pollack
Broke down and bought this on blu ray.
The film itself was well done. I thought they could have padded the ending a little more. Felt a bit rushed with the resolve. I certainly would have given it top marks if it had established more time and conflict due to Michael Dorsey's actions of lying to everyone, but I guess they had to make some serious editing decisions, or maybe it was just the mentality of the time. It came off a bit uneven to me, and the only reason I mention it in regard to an otherwise nearly flawless adult comedy is because of the word nearly. I like payoff to be very well rewarded, and the time for the hurting didn't last long enough. Other than that, I enjoyed it. It was intelligently handled with the writing for the most part, and the performances were all tip top. I found myself cringing a lot, but also laughing, especially at Dustin's continuous use of the word "ye-yas" (yes).
The supplements on the blu ray featured a very moving interview with Dustin Hoffman, who has always been one of my absolute favorite actors. The man is ready to cry between every sentence, and he does. His insight on the body language of women, in particular, the placing of the hand over the heart quite often, brought him to tears, as did the rejection of playing a woman probably deemed ugly by societal standards. It choked me up. I know crying on cue is skill of an actor but I believe Dustin means it.
I believe the ending of Tootsie left me on the verge of tears not so much because of the content of the story, but more for the time it came out and how different certain sensibilities were back then. The type of charisma and intellect and warmth just plain doesn't exist in movies anymore today and I miss it. I believe Dustin does, too. I can see why the guy cries so easily as it's known that he has worked with some legendary talent and must have had some equally legendary times working his craft with others.

First time I watched it I had to turn it off after 20 minutes because it was just too insane (Also my grandmother looked very uncomfortable). I read the book and returned to the film. So....
Holy crap this movie is insane. I say watching this movie is the same as taking an illegal drug. Johnny Depp is very funny and portrays the character of Duke very well. Del Toro is awesome. A lot of stuff is lifted straight from the book which is always good in my book. The film perfectly portrayed which sections of the book were fiction or reality. The ending was improved upon. The cinematography perfectly portrayed the effects of being on drugs(not that I'd know!).
If you want to watch this film read the book first, otherwise it most likely won't make much sense.
This isn't a movie, it's a trip.

So like... I watched this back in about 1998 and hated it.
I think at that age, being a bit naïve when it comes to movie trivia and TV trivia, and only ever seeing Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb And Dumber, I expected a similar sort of movie to Carrey's other stuff.
Had my 2nd watch, almost 20 years later... and loved it.
I think to get the movie, you need to be a cinephile.
Packed with references to classic cinema and TV shows, line after line of dialogue, scene after scene, the film packs as much as it can into the running time, yet also doesn't do it to the point that it's just a parody or homage... the film actually has, albeit slightly disturbing, its own story going on.
Carrey is also fantastic as the twisted screen junkie who basically worms his way into the lives of people who aren't sure if they want him or not... and there's an undertone of mental instability going on that's seemingly based on real life, and also parodies the same subject at the same time.
Broderick's softer touch at comedy is also perfect when played against Carrey at his most twisted.
Clever movie.

Wise Blood (1979)
Fascinating movie directed by John Huston that's hard to describe because I really wasn't sure of the motives of the main character or what he was really trying to say. It's the mid-to-late 70's and Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif, in one of his best roles) is just returned from the military and finds his old homestead run down and his father dead and buried on the property. So he hitches a ride to the city where he says he's "going to become something in the world." The fact that his father (director John Huston, seen in flashbacks) was a hell fire and brimstone minister and often had a young Hazel up front at his revivals, scaring him till he urinated, might have something to do with Hazel's choice of paths. He decides to start "The Church of Jesus Without Jesus," and he doesn't have a church building. He's a street corner minister, screaming to people that he doesn't believe in anything (so I guess that would make him a nihilist?), that if you're dead, you're dead, if you're poor, you're poor, that nothing is going to save you. He attracts a small crowd who gather around wherever he stands, but it's never really successful. He attracts the attention of a young man named Enoch Emory (Dan Shor) who wants a friend so bad he absolutely will not leave Hazel alone. I felt for Enoch, but Hazel has no time for him, he doesn't want friends. A blind man preacher, Asa Hawks (Harry Dean Stanton) and his homely daughter, Sabbath Lily (Amy Wright) come along, handing out tracts for their "church," and the girl catches Hazel's eye, so he follows them and ends up at the same boarding house with them. The landlady is somewhat suspicious but is friendly and welcomes Hazel. What follows is what happens when Hazel starts a relationship with Sabbath Lily, and Hazel's suspicion of Asa and his "ministry."
Also, we have Ned Beatty as a huckster street corner minister who wants to hitch a ride on Hazel's star. Except Hazel can smell a hypocrite a mile away and he hates them more than anything. So he refuses Beatty, whose name is Hoover Shoates---I love all these off-center names! The movie is full of them. Although set in the 70's, the movie really has the feel and almost look, of the 20's or 30's. If it weren't for the vehicles and certain other things, like Dairy Queen, you'd think this was set in the Depression. The dialogue is crisp and tart, with Brad Dourif practically spitting his lines, which only adds to his performance. Everyone involved in fantastic, even a younger William Hickey in a smallish role. As things progress, Hazel begins to see only one course for him. And the movie purposefully leaves things ambiguous, which really worked fine for me. Despite the name of Hazel's church, the movie is really not about that, but about his relationships with all the people who come into his orbit and his reaction to them. But what he really believes in the end remains a mystery because he doesn't say, but his actions give me a clue. Great 70's cinema and highly recommended.
If it seems I've told the whole movie, rest assured I haven't. It's just the outer surface I've described. Once you start watching, you'll get pulled in. Great stuff.

I can see why the guy cries so easily as it's known that he has worked with some legendary talent and must have had some equally legendary times working his craft with others.

Fat City - 10/10
I only watch movies I've seen before after midnight, that way if I don't finish it, no big deal, but I don't feel I can sleep yet, and this is such a great movie.
Stacy Keach is so great in this. Everyone knows he would have got better roles if he didn't have a cleft pallate. I can't think of a handful of actors who've been this great in a movie.
My 3rd favorite of John Huston.

Hadnt heard of this one but I laughed at your description of the monkey escaping, biting the journo and getting hit by a car. I'm going to hell for that. Sounds a bit like

I'm so happy somebody else has seen it! At first I didn't know why it was on the Top 100 Cheers list, but when I thought about it later, maybe it has something to do with the fact that despite what was happening to him, he still considered himself to be "the luckiest man". Who knows? And I know these men aren't The Babe, but Bob Meusel, Mark Koenig and Bill Dickey (who has a decent-sized role) are in it, too. Anyway, I'm very glad to hear that you liked it!

Killing Ground (Damien Power, 2017)
This feature film directorial debut from Tasmanian-born filmmaker Damien Power is quite interesting as it breaks from the linear storyline of the camping survival/terror film. In the film, a couple finds an abandoned tent when they arrive at a campground for a romantic weekend. At first, they don't think much about it until they find a toddler in the woods. During this period, the viewer gets to learn the events that lead up to the abandoned tent while crossing with the modern day. The connection appear in the forms of two hunters who soon turn the couple's trip into a fight for survival. Very gritty at times, dark, but powerful performances help drive the film.

This will never come up again in my life, ever, probably. So I need to comment while I have the opportunity. The painted reflection on his forehead, just below the hairline is really freaking me out. I thought someone had photoshopped part of it out, but no. That's the way it is, it's just a specular highlight. Still looks so weird!!! I wonder if that ever came up in conversation with the artist, or if it was even noticed. I don't know why, but I always love obsessing over trivial things like that looking for a story.
Great poster though. Really.

Typical australian film - no promotion down this way. Trailer looks good.
Looks like no distribution either. Only getting a release at this stage at a film festival in one state.

I would give it the same rating, an ok movie but a stunning ending. Anatomy of Hell from the same director is more nauseating but not as good.

Since the days of “Badlands” cinematic poetry and philosophy have been synonymous with Terrence Malick. Primary themes of Malick are meditations nature, love and violence. He often sets his characters in beautiful awe-inspiring landscapes, dwarfing the characters themselves, while voice-over narratives between love, violence, and even death clash and come to pass underneath the striking visual surface. The sense resulting is a true God’s eye view, one of immense sympathy for human beings.
“The New World” by Malick explores these same themes he’s explored throughout his career. The story, initially, is about the love of Johnathan Smith and Pocahontas. The early formations of Jamestown. Rebellion and War. The loss of love between Smith and Pocahontas, and a love triangle between Smith and John Rolfe.
Each of these plot elements are treated as chapters in the lives of these men and women. Indifferent, but not cold, actually quite the contrary. Terrence Malick has a beautiful way of making these events seem as real as life itself. So when two people experience passionate love, we can empathize with them. When the love is lost but not forgotten, we share that too. When someone dies, and there is beauty in that death, we share that spiritual experience very well.
Akira Kurosawa used to talk about something called “cinematic beauty”. It is when the sum of the whole become larger than the sum of the parts. “The New World” is a collection of what at first seems random parts, life events and voice-over narration by Smith, Rolfe, and Pocahontas respectively… but editing them together the way Malick intends transcends the medium of film itself. It becomes a spiritual journey into the self. It literally sends chills up and down my spine. I’m moved, but should I write or express what is I’m moved about, all I can express is I feel a sorrow for the human finite, but an appreciation and love for the infinite… God.
Truly a miraculous picture, and one to see on each of its cuts. I’m reviewing the Theatrical Release, but there are two more cuts on the Criterion DVD and Blu-Ray which I hope to get around to. It's one of the best films I've seen in some time. I highly recommend it.

I read a review of that film once that gave up the ending in the first couple of sentences. I never read reviews of films i've not seen, and rarely of ones i have seen that aren't posted here, i was going through someone on Letterboxd's reviews and that was there. Guess i'll never watch it since that's all that is worth it haha.

Nuns are so friggin hot but I seem to struggle with their movies. Like The Nun's Story, I think this is a terrific movie that I struggled to get into. I didn't think the acting was universally strong, but there are some fine performances. Deborah Kerr is an actress I've grown extremely fond of, while Kathleen Byron made a strong impression on me. I was excited to see the lovely Jean Simmons in the opening credits, but she was very young here and her makeup made her almost unrecognizable. The movie has some stunning shots, but I was disappointed in the outdoor scenery. It's set in the Himalayas, but they used sets and paintings and I could tell. It's an old movie so I guess I can't squawk too much about it. This is pretty steamy for an old movie about nuns that simmers until a wonderful last half hour.

Being Evel 4++ A bit bias, being one of those kids in the seventies who LOVED Evel Kneivel, this was an incredibly well-informed and honest documentary of the daredevil supreme. Produced by Johnnie Knoxville and featuring, not only people associated with, along with his two wives and his kids, but a number of X-Sport athletes who thought of Evel as an inspiring hero.

The Great Wall 3.5++ I was all set to dislike this, but, for a popcorn devouring faire, and being absolutely sure to shut off any attempt at rationalizing thought process, it was pretty d@mn cool. The scale of the battles, the defending army and the action was pretty good and I did get a few chuckles out of the dialogue.
I may just see this again at some point.
