Murder Mountain (2018) [original title: Murder Mountain: Welcome to Humboldt County] Directed by Joshua Zeman for Lightbox Productions.
This is a fascinating 6 episode documentary about the infamous marijuana trade in Humboldt County, California, and it's history. It features several associated crimes (including murder) that took place there within the past 15 year period, including the recent times post legalization..
"Murder Mountain" refers to the name locals gave to an area full of pot farms and outlaws. It's located a few miles NE of Garberville, CA, 150 miles north of San Francisco, in southern Humboldt Co.
There are several points of focus which thread throughout the production. Several murders are highlighted, but the underlining narrative portrays marijuana farming and associated market both before and after legalization.
Having lived in northern Humboldt Co. for 20 years, I was particularly drawn to the illegal industry that we were all aware of, but seldom had any direct exposure to. The area of Pacific Northwest redwoods, which is isolated by geographical and travel barriers, has a particular draw to people who want to eschew flatland and metropolitan civilization. Many of its citizens have a yearning for privacy which is satisfied by the county's isolation. There's really no other section of America like it, with the exception of Alaska, and possibly areas in Appalachia.
What occurred to me while watching was that legalization (and I believe all drugs should be legally freely obtainable) started to draw to an end the dangerous crime associated with clandestine production and sales, it revealed and brought into focus the evils of governmental crime: regulation, taxation, monopoly, and totalitarian control. While the immediate effect of marijuana legalization was to reduce the price, and to relieve some of the dangerous associated crime, government is now free to move in to regulate, tax, and restrict any natural innovation. The only bright light in that regard is the Fed's recent bills by Congress which will prevent Big Pharma from locking up marijuana products with patents, and from driving up the prices.
But most viewers will be mesmerized by the series, which is as much a crime drama as it is a well presented documentary. Available on Netflix and streaming services.
Doc's rating: 8/10
Bird Box was a 4 for me (maybe 3.5).
Concept isn't explored that well, but really well made. Netflix films are clearly getting better.

LUKAS (2018) JULIEN LECLERCQ
https://medias.unifrance.org/medias/217/240/192729/format_page/lukas.jpg
French movie, about the struggle of a night bouncer widower (Jean‑Claude Van Damme) in Brussels, Belgium with a 8-years-old daughter to raise. I didn't picked this movie because I liked the main actor like I believe most people did, I fond the story appealing and the actor was appealing as well. This is not a "kill everyone" kinda of movie, is a dramatic movie with good action. Jean-Claude Van Damme was great, might be the best performance of his carrear which is not a great complement, might be the first time he acted, he was mysterious, down to earth, cold and quiet, perfection for the role. A dark and realistic movie with a very heavy character are the two main reason for liking this movie.
ASHER (2018) MICHAEL CATON-JONES

Just picked this movie because I've always liked Ron Perlman (not just from Hellboy) and the solitary type hitman kind of movie always catch my attention. If you like Ron Perlman as well, watch the movie, is watchable, if you don't really have any type of opinion about Ron Perlman, don't watch the movie, the story had some potencial but was poorly executed, from the dialogue to the distribution of action.

I actually enjoyed more the first moments of the movie. I liked the romanticized way they made the beginnings, the scene they are watching TV was one of my favorites, the vulgar talk about planets while they are in bed, another good scene the director decided to cut was the Gas Station, talked about Red Miller & Mandy background, he a drunk loser and she's kinda of a whore. No one can follow the story in this movie to like it, is more a detail, emotion and visual kind of movie, enjoying each individual scene, is kinda of a nostalgic fan-boy type of thing, like the Cheddar Goblin TV commercial that people enjoyed so much. I approach this in a Tarantino kind of way, the violence is just an add.

Redford's last film, a nice farewell feelgood movie, partly set in 1981, it has the same look and feel of any of the Classic Bank Heist movies, I enjoyed it! A bit slow paced.. was expecting more 'heist stuff', more Glover, less Spacek.. but still enjoyed it very much.

Annihilation (2018)
I probably shouldn’t feel as let down as I do that Alex Garland exceded his grasp again but that’s what I can muster from this, primarily. It’s just so blunt of an attempt to explore and examine varying forms of coping with mortal dread. There’s a great concept here but the execution side-steps most, maybe any, of the, imo, necessary introspectiveness.
Like the rest of the guy’s work, however, I did find a few things that I really did like. The visual element, for sure. Garland does direct the hell out of the movie’s forays into pure horror and Portman’s more in her element here than I’ve seen her in a while. Gina Rodriguez also brought a lot of personality to her part, I think, which added to that second point there.
Something to note: the ending wasn’t the clear low point this time around. Hmm. In fact, I kind of wish the rest of the movie had followed suit. So, a sign of progression there? Maybe?

FIRST REFORMED (2017) PAUL SCHRADER
https://www.cinema7arte.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/MFA-2018-4.jpg
I was watching this movie and I was thinking of two things, one was Winterlight by Bergman, the other around the middle was Taxi Driver, guess Paul Schrader made a new Travis Bickle, this one is a 47-years-old reverend named Ernst Toller, from the First Reformed Church in Snowbridge, New York. This is a very, cinematographic speaking, minimalistic, methodical movie, the camera movement is almost none, always centered without zooming or movement, which I liked very much. This is not a religious movie, this is the story of a mourning man that found a psychological getaway in a worldly concern/cause, in this case was environment. This environmental concern was introduced to him on a counseling section with a radical-environmentalist named Michael that wanted his wife to abort his not yet born children because he believed the world would become apocalyptic. One very important aspect about Michael that I fell many people didn't paid enough attention is Michael's father, a wealthy business man, a "morbid son of a bitch", I think this environmental struggle was also Michael's getaway or a way to fight back his possible bad relationship with his father, reminds me of the movie Twelve Monkeys by Terry Gilliam. I see this movie in a very Taxi Driver way, I see people's ghosts, concerns dictating there extremist views/ideas. There is a line in this movie which I particularly like very much: Wisdom is holding two contradicting truths in our mind simultaneously. I don't believe I have wisdom, but I believe I have those contradicting truths in many situations, they come with a empathy I searched. Personally in this environmental situation we are in, I believe that we are indeed destroying the planet, I believe that's a "truth", but I also believe that we are delaying the next ice age, that is also a possible "truth". I believe we are a magnificent specie, we are a curious innovative specie, we can solve any problem we come across. In this middle you might not find wisdom, but you will find harmony and a less pessimistic view.

American Psycho - 7/10
I saw this on VHS shortly after it came out, and I heard it mentioned and thought to compare. I still think it's a pretty good satire (not biting, though) on the young middle-class of the 80s. A lot of it is the script, how the dialogue is full of slogans, even the repeated "Just Say No!" and other explanation cliches.

Tonight for bad movie night, we watched "Attack of the Herbals". I bought it on DVD at a truck stop on the drive back from Christmas at my grandmother's for $3.
It was actually a well done movie and it was a lot of fun. While it starts out kind of slow and weak, it gets better as it goes along and the third act is really, really good. If you get a chance to watch it, I recommend it.

I had this on my watchlist for a while, and finally watched it because it's eligible for the horror countdown. Of course I will consider it a crime thriller. The ads state a combination of Se7en and Saw, and I can understand that. The cops are after a brutal murderer who's playing a game. It's got a pretty good cast including Stellan Skarsgard, Tom Hardy, and Selma Blair, but nobody here does their best work. It's a slimy seedy movie with some well done intense torture. It's just not all that good.

I had seen "The River Wild" when it first came out about 25 years ago. When I saw it again on youtube, I remembered a good amount of it, and forgotten some other parts of this movie. It's a good, intense movie, but not for the faint of heart.
Meryl Streep, who plays Gail, an experienced white-water rafting guide, is excellent in this film. So are Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly, who play the two dangerous fugitive killers that Gail ends up taking on.

Truly pessimistic portrayal of life. so bleak, so depressive, a haunting one. its reputation also stamped harder by the fact that what seems to be depressed, sensitive young director Hu Bo, committed suicide after the movie wrapped up the production. Would really like to see an R rated version of this. I enjoyed it anyway but adding copious amounts of silly gore would have been outstanding. Can't wait to see Mickey Knox in the sequel. I always wondered what happened to him.

Happy New Year Colin Burstead (2018)
If you enjoyed Neill Maskell's character in Kill List then you'll probably enjoy this regardless. Given mixed reviews but I liked it. Colin hires a mansion to arrange a family reunion but ends up having an uninvited guest. No action but humourous dialogue.

Do people still rewatch this movie? I remember being fairly impressed by it when it just came out but after a few viewings over the years, I've increasingly felt that time hasn't been awfully kind to it (at least to my mind). Rewatching it last night on BD, I still enjoyed a few aspects of it (basically the whole opening, the iconic introductions of Trinity and Morpheus, Hugo Weaving's performance as Agent Smith, etc.) but, as I watched on, gradually the charm that I thought was still there at first started to evaporate, and the rest of it, although often visually impressive, felt painfully shallow and dated to me. Even back in 1999-2000, despite liking the film quite a bit, I wouldn't have thought it deserving of 8.7 on IMDB - right now it just seems plain ridiculous.

1st Re-watch...Was discussing this movie with a friend which motivated the re-watch and I'm so glad I did because I discovered something major that I missed the first time. In my review of the film, I mentioned that one of the things that intrigued me about the story was the fact that they never tell you exactly what happened to Pat (Bradley Cooper) that got him institutionalized, but I was wrong...I don't know how I missed it the first time, but what he did is revealed. This movie was even better the second time, and as good as Jennifer Lawrence was, Cooper was better and was robbed of the best actor Oscar. I also think DeNiro and Jacki Weaver are severely underrated here.

I guess I feel the opposite. In terms of action movies with 'cutting edge' special effects, this movie still holds up for me. I still feel like the fight sequences are entertaining, the music works, the look of the film still feels cool and I am engaged in the story.
It's funny to me that the sequels, which weren't regarded highly when they came out, seem more outdated today than this film. The Neo vs 100 Smith fight looks goofy, everything in Zion is boring, confusing ideological monologues to make it seem more important.
The intrigue is there for me and sometimes I feel like I'm discovering the world for the first time when I dive into the world the Wachowski's have created. Deserving of the IMDB score in my opinion, it changed movie making.

I thought I'd be watching a balls-to-the-walls action flick à la Hardcore Henri, but ended up with a strange movie inspired by Besson's Nikita and not a small bit of force-fed Shakespeare symbolism.
At least it was enjoyable while it lasted, though. I just wish that at least the actions scenes had been better.

I had high expectations going in, given the feedback I've heard from others, but this let me down a bit. I still enjoyed the movie, and it's tense feeling throughout. However, there wasn't much of a rise and fall of that feeling. I was expecting the climax of the movie to be a bit more emotionally impacting, but it didn't do much for me. Remarkable performance from Phoenix.

The Favourite (2018) - 8/10. Mostly of the ladies category in the Oscars wrapped up i would assume.
Love Simon (2018) - 7/10. Wonderful and a happy surprise. Great music and fun.
Eight Grade (2018) - 6.5/10. Very nice. The young girl might have a very good future.
The Old Man and The Gun (2018) - 6.5/10. Fun story. But nothing too spectacular.
Private Life (2018) - 7/10. Very very nice and heartwarming story. Well acted. Netflix should focus on these rather than Adam Sandler.
Mandy (2018) - 3.5/10. Saw this on some underrated movie list. Awful.
Sorry to Bother You (2018) - 7/10. Funny, sarcastic and good movie.
Support the Girls (2018) - 5/10. Decent but a bit dull. Regina Hall was great.
You Were Never Really Here (2018) - 5/10. Overhyped. Not bad, not great.
Under the Tree (2017) - 6.5/10. My first Icelandic movie. Good movie.
Revenge (2017) - 4.5/10. Nothing special, run of the mill revenge movie.
Puzzle (2018) - 6/10. Heart-warming and decent.
Hereditary (2018) - 6.8/10. Wonderfully acted a few gruesome shots, but all in all a good horror movie.
Unsane (2018) - 6/10. Watched it coz it was shot on an iPhone. Intrigued by that aspect. Messy but a decent watch. Claire Foy was good.
Gold (2018) - 5/10. Historically inaccurate from what i read. So loses points there. Decent at best.
Gemini (2017) - 4.5/10. Slow, boring, predictable.
Death of Stalin (2017) - 7/10. A happy surprise, wonderfully acted, good movie.
Teen Tiants Go! The movie (2018) - 6.5/10. Good one time watch. But nothing special.
Lean on Pete (2018) - 6/10. Slow but good.
Thoroughbreds (2017) - 6/10. Slow burn for sure. Ending was good.
Disobedience (2018) - 5/10. Nothing special. Just some good lesbian action.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) - 4/10. Nothing to say about this one. Boy Erased did a lot better.
A Prayer Before Dawn (2018) - 6.5/10. Great story, but just not quite gripping enough.
Blackkklansman (2018) - 7/10. Is this story true or fiction? Whatever it was, it was fun.
The Cakemaker (2018) - 7.2/10. Great, touching story. Good stuff.
A Quite Place (2018) - 7.5/10. Great concept, loved the acting. Great movie. But was wondering, how did they fart for so many years?
American Animals (2018) - 6.5/10. Good show. Happy surprise this one.
Upgrade (2018) - 7/10. This was a stunner. Although I would say they could have picked a better lead, he was good but not great.

Vice - 7.5/10
Christian Bale was really good. It's funny, because I just saw him in "American Psycho" and its one of the more memorable characters in cinema (I think). As an American, I kinda had to see this. It's about Dick Cheney!
I didn't know he could gargle listerine! I also can't imagine him going "wooooooo" as a young Christian Bale in a bar.
I just hope someone makes one on Obama, who became Cheney-lite, extending the warfare state and other not-so-liberal things. I highly doubt this guy is going to make it. There was a mention of Trump, and just a brief swearing-in of Obama, which shows this guy isn't only partisan, but he's dishonest. He knows who the target audience is. Shame.
I did think the movie did humanize Cheney. The director actually gave Cheney the benefit of the doubt over his gay daughter, even going so far to say he wouldn't go for President because of the dirty that would have been dug up. And it showed a family how has received a lot of news, considering Cheney got Dick's only House seat, and the "I believe marriage is between a man and woman" between the sisters, who possibly still don't talk... The difference is that Cheney's history is public, and people (myself included after I post this) can search. Of course that comes to power.

Stuck inbetween Wild Strawberries and The Virgin Spring, The Magician never really captured my attention. This one took about half the running time before I really started to enjoy it and I couldnt call it an entertaining film. It does benefit from a strong ending and Bergman regulars Max Von Sydow and the gorgeous Ingrid Thulin are great, as usual.

The Guardian (1990, rewatch) – 5.5/10
Interesting that I'm pretty sure the type in the title sequence is the same from the end of Sorcerer (there it works extremely well).
What struck me this time was how much better the film becomes once Jenny Seagrove arrives; she's extremely effective. It's just a pity that there's a good film in here let down by some weak acting and scripting, and the music isn't that clever. Some really weird choices:
When the parents wake up to the sound of the crying baby and neither of them want to go and see to him – I was laughing when it turned out that the cot was right next to the bed. The lazy buggers!
The scene with the gang puzzled me as well. Why does the tree allow Camilla to be injured when it could have easily dismembered her assailants before this?
The confusion over placing Camilla's accent – surely the most familiar type of English accent known to man?
And finally the fact that Camilla – considering how beguiling and perfect she seems – is still only the parents' second choice. Maybe the accent was bugging them too much?
Incredible also to read that M. R. James' The Ash Tree was an influence as the script was being tinkered with. Something I've just been watching again over Christmas :).

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/20/LongGoodFridayPoster.jpg
Film about gangsters and aspiration in the UK in the oncoming love-in with the US with Thatch in power. Hoskins is pretty incredible as Harold, the man who wants more, and bigger, but takes his eye off more immediate and closer problems. All the acting is great and the story-line is very plausible. This adds to the gravitas of the movie, y'know, not a 'Essex Boys' ("you tart", "you filth", "you toilet") gangster wannabe film for 12 year olds. Great set-pieces and an ending that has stuck with me since the 1st time I saw it years ago. 9/10

Some of the subject matters that I like to make stories about are definitely not inherently commercial. So I have to look for very special kind of financing and go down a very gentle path in order to make my films, as do basically all social-realist filmmakers. It's a long process.

It's about a cop who gets a temporary work as a 911 operator. Not sure what it is called in Denmark. And he gets entangled in a call he gets late night from a woman in trouble. Anything more would be too revealing. Give the movie a try!!

I saw the 5.2/10 rating on IMDB, but I thought with Mastroianni as the lead, and Polanski directing, maybe it's a bad movie that is enjoyable. Nope.... And if it's going to be very sexual, at least give the woman breasts.

This really just struck me as way too unoriginal and run of the mill. Many action movies are, but at least some have their own style. It was also ridiculous, and I'm not exactly someone who tries to pick these films apart. Jennifer Garner is strong and athletic enough to be convincing in an action role, but I don't think she can carry a movie.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2018)Studio: FX; Starring: Darren Criss, Edgar Ramirez, Ricky Martin, and Penelope Cruz
On July 15, 1997 an internationally famous fashion designer was murdered in front of his Miami Beach mansion by a crazed spree killer. This was the basis of the series.
Midway through episode #2 of the series it occurred to me to wonder where they could possibly take this well known story in order to fill up 9 episodes. The answer: after the Versace murder (not an assassination) the narrative was woven backwards through time with fictitious accounts of the perpetrator Andrew Cananan, and with imagined scenes and dialogue from Versace’s past.
The senseless killing which became a sensation, and the details surrounding it could have been adequately portrayed in 2 or 3 episodes. Unfortunately it was drug out to 9. Presumably FX was only interested in a 9 episode series, so the writers had to comply. In doing so they decided on an unusual and risky production method. It didn’t work. Telling the story backwards from the murder resulted in confusion about the characters, the timeline, and puzzlement over what several of the side stories had to do with the main plot. Therefore the series was jumbled and wandering, which took away any tension that might have been established by another method.
To his credit Darren Criss showed flashes of brilliance in his performance of the psychopathic Cunanan. Providing his character with any continuity must have been a Herculean project. This resulted in an uneven portrayal. Still his work was often at the highest level as he fashioned his award winning performance. In fact there were no poor performances in the entire series.
But the series itself was erratic and perplexing. It’s surprising that it won the Golden Globe, when there were other better series of its type; for example Escape at Dannemora. Presumably the key points in its win were due to its robust presentation of homosexuality, along with the underlying theme of historical homosexual persecution. Hollywood has been in love with homosexual characters and stories for the past several years. It’s as if homosexuality has been added to the unwritten list of elements that must be included in any production, the practice of which has been amply celebrated by industry awards.
First rate performances, second rate series. Doc’s rating: 6/10

[Leave No Trace]I seen it and loved it! By far the best 2018 movie I've seen and one of the best films I've seen in a long time.
This was one of those small but captivating movies. It didn't sound like my type of film, and in fact it could have easily been treated as a Hippie/smarmy type of statement film. But instead the situation was presented honestly without editorializing. It almost felt like a documentary.
To me, it's chief attraction was the acting. I never felt as though I was watching actors in their roles. An added pleasure was it's PG rating. It's obvious from this picture that blood, guts and kink are not necessary elements in a good film.

PATERSON (2016) JIM JARMUSCH
https://walkcheerfullyblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/000d34a5-800.jpg?w=800
I don't know about everyone else, but when I finish I movie I don't really have many arguments to express why I like the movie I just watched. I mean, I can talk about all the aspects of a movie, like the cinematography, the script, the acting, etcetera but that's superficial, I think, that's not what I seek when I decide to watch a film, those aspects sometimes are not even relevant. I have to sleep the movie to understand what made me like it, and later maybe write something here expecting someone the give a crap, because we all want our opinion to matter to someone else. If I can't relate personally to the movie I will probably dislike it. Now, finally, Paterson: Jim Jarmusch is a person that is fascinated with cities, he loves cities, I personally hate them, the noise, the confusion, for me they are like that movie with Tom Cruise: 'A man died on the train, he's riding the subway before anybody notices his corpse doing laps around L.A., people on and off sitting next to him. Nobody notices.' When I go to any big city, like Porto in Portugal, what really attracts me, is my fascination is just watch people, try to imagine there life's, trying to see something about them that they don't know, and that fascination is something I have in common with Jim Jarmusch. This movie is about relations, something about an old America, a place where you knew your neighbors and you cared about them. He made a very special effort emptying a city to make that old America fascination a reality. What made me like this movie so much was a man relation with a city and everything in it, a very relaxed, cooperative, reasonable relation, seeing instead of looking, paying attention to the smallest details and making them poetry. A Paterson in the city of Paterson, a person being the environment is in. This movie is very appealing to me personally, I've being trying to write something about it for some time now.

It deserved its Golden Globe.
Only a couple of ciriticisms ... Some of the action was too fast to process. I would've liked to have seen more action from some of the other Spider-people, especially Spider-Ham.

Ditto on the first point but I guess it works in the film’s favor. I’d like to see it in theaters again soon.
I actually thought all Spider-people/animal got a solid moment to shine, in and/or out of action, except for Peni Parker. Ham’s “I frolic and I dance and I do this with my pants” got one of the biggest laughs from me in a long while, so that’s a satisfactory use of the character in my opinion.
The fight at Aunt May’s house blows most other action set-pieces from this year and a few others back right out of the water.

One of the things that I love about this film that Penny Marshall got right and a number of these female remakes have gotten wrong is is that the male actors aren't just foils for the women. This is a film that attempts to find humor and humanity with everyone and by doing so it makes a much stronger statement towards female empowerment.
That’s not a great reading. I think the correct descendant of “League” would be something like GLOW or even Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

I think it's very interesting that while I was discussing movies your analogy went towards television. Another way of putting it is A League of Their Own is able to do in a fraction of the time what a television show needs a season to.

German Shocker/splatter with pretty decent production values. Not sure about the animal cruelty (if true) as I believe the director goes under an alias and has not been interviewed directly about the matter. It really drags and is relentlessly grim although I suspect it was attempting to be titillating. It's really not although the actors make not a bad fist of an absolutely hilarious script.
Supposedly "meaningful" but just drivel. 2/10 and the 2 is for the camerawork.

I don't care for the crass and crude, but I had a lot of laughs. I've been telling myself I need to watch (and usually re-watch) stand-up that I love for the laughs - I'm done running for a few reasons, one which I'll reveal in my next post. (I like to separate scores)

The Children's Hour - 7/10
This was interrupted by many police cars, fire trucks, paramedics, etc., driving on my little tiny street. Some young man stole a car from a neighbor on an adjacent street, ran it into the neighbor's car two houses down, and was overdosed, and I saw them trying to break the window, etc.. The woman said he was barely breathing. The neighbors talked about how they should all carry Narcan. I kept listening from my door, and heard there have been thefts, drug dealers (I think new additional ones) and I was burglarized two years ago so I kept listening for my own sake.
I thought I had seen this movie before, then realized it was the 1936 original (These Three), but with the new Hays Code and think the interruption didn't have an affect. James Gardner seems so fake for me (and in other movies - especially "Americanization of Emily", where he was given some of the best lines)... A little too melodramatic at times, the Grandma was real good... An always reserved Audrey "never moves a muslce" Hepburn might have worked in this movie to balance so much screaming. Shirley MacLaine was pretty good... I wish there was a little more emphasis placed on how awful a lie can be, and also the corroboration and the saving face even after a lie is discovered in many cases.. (especially with those who have 100x the power)

The 12th Man (2017)
After a failed sabotage mission leaves his eleven comrades dead, a Norwegian resistance fighter finds himself on the run from the Gestapo through the snowbound Arctic reaches of Scandinavia in a true story of survival that is hard to believe. In a familiar genre I was incredibly won round by the story and the climactic scene just blew me away, its hard to give a better translation, also Jonathan Rhys Meyers does good Nazi here and speaks in German.

I don't know about everyone else, but when I finish I movie I don't really have many arguments to express why I like the movie I just watched.
I like what you said about Paterson, but this sentense was exactly what I thought when I watched this movie. So I started to wonder what could it be. I guess the thing which entranced me here was simplicity and peace. I came out of the cinema relaxed.

I truly believe this:
A Paterson in the city of Paterson, a person being the environment is in.
I believe Jim Jarmusch wanted the audience to experience exactly that peace & relaxation and then wonder why. This is not just about environment, or a kind of nostalgia, this movie is not even about nostalgia, is a message about something lost, that we probably need to get back. More general understanding, I think, the fact that Paterson and his girlfriend Laura are so different and yet perfect for each other is a very important detail and a message actually. His daily routine and so many scenes where Paterson is working driving a bus and making the best out of it is also a important message, listening to passengers conversations from all ages and ideologies. This movie have a lot of interesting details, I just watched it twice, I don't like to watch the movies I like very often, but is that kind of movie you understand it better each time you see it, like The Big Lebowski.

I liked this much more the second time around. The first time, the last 40 minutes were just too much of an unexpected letdown. It still is a letdown for me, but at least now I appreciate what it turns into. The first hour is flat out awesome, and the whole film is very well made with excellent acting. My wife surprisingly wanted to try it and ended up liking it as much or more than I did.

Some heartbreaking moments in this one directed by Yen Tan. Cory Michael Smith plays 'Adrian', a twenty something guy who works in advertising in NYC. Adrian visits his small town Texas family at Christmas hoping to break some personal news to them, but it doesn't go to plan.
The film, shot in black and white, doesn't deal with anything we haven't seen on screen before but what it does, it does very well. The script especially is very tight and paces well. I found the father a poor character and there are a few scenes that are a touch too melodramatic / histrionic. But the final 20 minutes or so are very well written and will tug at your heartstrings (if you're a sentimental fool like me, who allows themselves to be swept up in all that).
A hidden gem of 2018.

The Night Eats The World (2018)
Better than expected post-apocalyptic zombie movie. Its nothing we've never seen before ie 28 Days Later but it was atmospheric and with a large propotion of it set in the one place, it was quite claustrophobic. The psychological element was also a nice touch with the protagonist dealing with isolation. It stars Anders Danielsen Lie who you may know from Oslo, August 31st and with him being in near enough every scene, he's put in a great performance. It is a slow paced film so dont expect much action but when needed, the gore looked faily realistic. I also liked the Parisian backdrop along with the Eiffel tower.
I probably am rating that slightly too high but thats because I wasnt expecting that much.

Netflix surprised me today with a new Korean martial arts film. It loans its story from Italian barbarian films and has, even by Korean standards, lots of stupid humor but at least today I found it rather funny at times. Action is OK but strikes lack impact and some sequences are clearly sped up. Still somewhat enjoyable watch.

Watching the courtroom scene where the entire assembly erupts into unbridled militarist exultation ("We're going to war"), I can't help but think of how endlessly relevant this film still is in the toxic political climate we're witnessing today (let alone at the time it was made). The relentless anarchy and absurdist abandon with which it makes fun of all things war and politics is a riot to watch - it's hard not to get lost in this crazy "soup" of memorable scenes, rapid-fire dialogue and nonsensical humor.

4.0: Howie Sheffield is going a lot in his life. His parents are on the verge of divorce and things at school are awkward enough when rumors spread about a classmate, which picks his curiosity. However, he finds solace in an older married woman. Great indie drama featuring Brendan Meyer bring both awkward and strong as Howie, who as the title indicates, relishes in "all these small moments". Great supporting ensemble cast including Molly Ringwald, Jemima Kirke, and Harley Quinn Smith.

Pretty solid B movie crime caper. Bonnie's Kids kill their abusive stepfather then go on the run to live with their crime boss uncle. Long story short - the oldest daughter, along with her new PI "boyfriend", makes off with a few hundred thousand dollars of her uncles cash and he ain't to happy. The uncle sends his two hitmen (Jules and Vince?) after them and all kinds of fun stuff happens. This is one of the films that often gets credited for influencing parts of Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

The 80's were rightly known for slasher movies and teen comedies but right on their tail were movies about hookers. Go look. There's a ton of 'em. Cookie (Academy Award Winner Melissa Leo) arrives in NYC with her little brother and promptly gets turned to prostitution by Dale Midkiff (Pet Semetary dad). He's a no good, violent pimp that "loves" her but she starts looking for a new, nice pimp anyway which makes the old pimp unhappy and things go from there. Midkiff is definitely the weakest link as he's no Wings Hauser (Vice Squad). I just didn't buy him as a bad ass pimp but other than that it one of the better hooker movies of the 80's.

Abducted in Plain Sight
Not very good, but a crazy story.
think more emphasis should have been placed on each parent's individual action as well. "B" had sexual relations with a mom, her husband, and their daughter.. "B" wants this 11-yr old girl, so he has sex with the mother, masturbates the father, and then kidnaps the daughter. And then the mom buys her a plane ticket to work at a new business of "B" - kiddie amusement park. And then the mom has sex with "B" for over a year... I think there is a lot we're not hearing about. I would have loved to heard more from the FBI guy, who said what sounded like his own narrative, how he basically had his life affected by this work, and then to have them drop the charges, and not only enable, but sexually engage... "The church" doesn't want bad publicity, but of course they don't think about that when they do their disgusting behavior... But then years later, mom and daughter go make money, even try to make a movie out of it.... Every year I get older, the more I wanna stay away from people....

4 teen girls and their teacher are on a field trip in the desert when their bike breaks down. 3 bikers tow them to a cabin in the middle of nowhere and trouble ensues. It's an exploitation movie and obvious Last House on the Left ripoff that doesn't go nearly far enough. It's got that great 70's vibe but is very forgettable and not really worth watching.

'The Favourite' very much keeps in-line within Yorgos' unusual and cutthroat style, while also being totally distinct from his other films (likely because he didn't write it). The dialogue is less (intentionally) stilted than in his other movies, and as a result everything feels less alien. Also: talent all the way through. All the performances were incredible, and both Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone have amazing range (Stone's absolute best performance to date). But the best performance of the year, so far, from what I've seen: has to be Olivia Colman. She manages to weave between so many emotional states in the film, often in the same scene, and does it all without ever coming across as "I AM ACTING" - with also an extraordinary depth of character - completely submerging herself into the role, while holding nothing back in show of suffering.
I'm also happy it incorporated female power dynamics and lesbianism without once feeling preachy, on-the-nose, or otherwise influenced by lame identity politics. Not to mention the film is hardcore to the BONE. Very subtle too; it catches you like a vice. It sneaks up, messes with your head, and then floors you. I really didn't expect to be as thoroughly enthralled as I was (superb ending).
Fish-bowl shots galore.

Never given it much thought. Capping my scale at 4 It mainly means that I save 4.5s and 5s for films I find particularly exceptional rather than just really good. To this end, I still use 2.5 as the centre of the 5-point scale and mainly use it to denote films that are neither too bad or too good.
Besides, I did the maths and a 2.5 out of 4 would be a 3.125 out of 5 - a noticeable difference, but not exactly 3.5 or higher.
