Friday the 13th (2009) - 8/10
This is unquestionably the single greatest and most grossly underrated film of the entire franchise. Combining the best elements of the first four series instalments - Mrs. Vorhees' death from #1, Jason's shrine to his decapitated mother / mistakenly thinking one of his would-be victims is her from #2, adopting the Hockey Mask from #3 and Rob's revenge subplot for #4 - with a new interpretation of Jason as a survivalist / hunter gave it more meat on its bones than any one of the previous films ever had alone. It even managed to pull a Psycho by completely killing off its initial cast before the title card came up (approximately 25 minutes into the movie).
Unlike many of the previous films in the series, the deaths were brutal without being sadistic and the tone was consistantly serious (even if it did divulge in some drunken levity from time to time). The characters were reasonably complex and reasonably intelligent for the kind of movie that it was trying to be and the overall production was far better than the series ever deserved.

A great sci-fi film. Probably my 5th time watching it, I enjoy it a lot whenever I can because it's one of those comfort movies. I like the set and consume designs, humor, action which are creative and have a light, fun camp feeling. Gary Oldman, one of my favorite actors is again in a fantastic role. It has everything for me, and I'm disappointed because it isn't discussed much around MoFo.

The Cremator (1969)
Another one that will take a while to settle in. Haunting, chilling and at times grotesque funny...... and that's just the performance from Hrusinsky, the lead role. Again, finding this hard to rate as I don't think i've seen anything quite like it. I don't think it will make my list but I'm glad I watched it.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) 3.5
Set during the great depression, desperate people enter a grueling dance marathon for a large cash prize. The contest is so grueling, that their lives are at risk. There's a lot of people who consider this amongst the bleakest and most depressing American films ever made. I think that is a little bit of an exaggeration, but it most definitely has those qualities. I did think it had some flaws. I did not think that it looked like a depression era film, and I thought that at times it was overdone to the point where I had a slightly difficult time completely buying into it. Oddly enough, the movie reminded me of The Running Man. I love The Running Man, but that's not what I was looking for in this movie. Jane Fonda is the main star and I've become a fan of her's as an actress. She was nominated for an Oscar for this, but I thought she was merely good. I thought her performance came off as a bit forced. I believe this movie was nominated for 9 Oscars in total. Despite my perceived flaws, I think this is a very good film. It is unique, powerful, and memorable.

Blazing Saddles 4.5
Being honest the comedy genre is probably my least favorite(and least preferred genre of films). I find most of them obnoxious and almost unbearable to watch. I knew that this was considered a great classic, so blind bought it and gave it a shot. Worst case scenario this could be a flaming turd like Ghostbusters or it could actually be good. Blazing Saddles flies way past good and into spectacular, as I was laughing throughout the films' entire runtime. The visual gags, jokes, puns are clever, hilarious and extremely well-done. The cast is superb, the sets and costumes are top notch, and the film is paced perfectly. I loved this film.

Solid movie. A bit overlong in my opinion, but the movie is technically and visually stunning. Tom Hanks is at his best, and Jeremy Davies offered a solid performance too. The ending is particularly great also.

A difficult film, this was my second attempt and hardly I remembered much about the first, except this that any effort towards finding a comprehensible, conclusive answer to the happenings/non-happenings was an impossibility...You are, as a viewer, free to form (this probably is one of the films that is better to discuss than to watch :)).

Didn't like most of the acting except for the State Farm guy. I would have seen this earlier if I knew it was about drums. I did like when he mentioned how sad it was to hear jazz at Starbucks. I disagree with his methods, but I think the key of life is to aspire as high as you can in what you want to do. Let the work speak for itself, and if you're proud of your stuff, everything else is bonus.

The Admiral (2008) - Russian war film about Admiral Alexander Kolchak who lead the White Russian forces during the civil war from 1918-20. The production was actually an eight hour mini-series, compressed into two hour film length so it does feel very brisk, but manages a nice balance between war story and romance. Could have used a little more time to breathe, but still highly enjoyable.

The Wild Bunch (1969)
It's hard to talk about this movie! It's supposed to be one of the greatest american westerns of all time, but it left me with some mixed feelings!
The first two hours have some terrible pacing issues! There are some great scenes and the soundtrack is really cool, but it seems that it lacks some connection... Also, the uncontrolled laughing is annoying!
However, in the last 20 minutes there is one the most amazing battle sequences I remember watching in a western and it ends beautifully, which really makes up for the rest of the movie! Overall it was a good watch though I don't think it will be on my 60s list!

Gutterballs (2008) 2.5
Extreme gore, graphic nudity, brutal rape, and more swearing than any other scripted movie ever made. It has an 80's vibe, but it pushes the limits. 3 different people get bowling pins shoved into 3 different places. The bad acting and dialogue reminded me of The Toxic Avenger. This is a bad movie, but it does have value for fans of exploitation horror.

I didn't really know anything about this, but for some reason I thought it was supposed to be an uplifting movie. It seemed that way at the start too, until the little hints started to come. Burt Lancaster is great in this, and his character's revelations and transformation is fascinating, and ultimately sad. A very good, original movie.

FIVE EASY PIECES (1970)
Watched the film standing on my chair with my baseball glove, dancing during Jack's piano playing. I think about this sometimes, why don't people do more weird stuff while they're watching their screen. Like put their chair on top of a table or a tall dresser and watch from high up from a new angle like a throne. Try it sometimes, it's fun. Oh right, the movie, couldn't have been better. Jack, err Bobby, works on oil rigs and forklifts, moving from bars to motels as suits him, plays piano on the back of a random truck during traffic. Almost fell off my chair dancing towards the end when the pompous lady was talking all the philosophical mumbo jumbo.

From the man that brought us Juno comes an immensely realistic view on people's true happiness and fulfillment. It is a true biography but yet less daunting to how people suffer from common turmoils about life, career and whatnot. This film is wonderfully acted and clearly, it screams 'life' rather than 'desire'.

One of the few movies with great amount of substance in it starting from great acting, great directing to everything else that makes movies and music go in unison. We watch as F. Murray Abraham's Salieri and Tom Hulce's Mozart show us that our own greed and envy will be the eventual destination of our own destruction. This isn't just a movie but a war with ourselves, a war with God, and a war with our own pride. One of the best movies I have seen so far, what a masterpiece!

Birdman of Alcatraz - 10/10
If anyone is wondering why I saw this film for a 3rd time in the last 3 weeks, it's because I woke up this morning at 5 (6am) and didn't wanna watch something new. I went and got 6 movies from your recommendations from the "best films on loneliness" and thought if I did something other than laying there, I might get tired. Even if I got sleep, I'd seen this movie already. This time though there were subtitles, and there were a few homophones or words I didn't catch the first few times. I watched the entire film, and then took a 2 hour nap.
I'll keep the review short, since I've done it before. I'd love to do commentary on this with anyone willing. Such a great film, every line is so strong, encompasses so much. Based on Alcatraz' most famous prisoner, Robert Stroud. I was in SF last year, but the idea of going to an old prison is not my cup of tea, especially when the tours are at 6am. I guess they let you go into the "hole" - I might reconsider, as I plan on making a yearly pilgrimage.

Peeping Tom (1960) 4
British horror/thriller often compared to Psycho due to the release year. It seems that a few prefer this one and I can see why. I think Psycho stands out a little more with some memorable scenes and the theme music, but this may be a more consistently good film. It's hard to compare new favorites to old ones, so I'm not sure. I think Peeping Tom is more psychological in it's terror.

Foxcatcher (2014) 3.5
I'm a big fan of true crime stories, but I don't think this particular one is all that interesting.*The movie really drags, but I think that's the nature of this story, and the only way it could be done. I think the filmmakers did about as much with it as they could. There's moments of intensity until the final upsetting payoff. I thought all three stars did a nice job. I don't necessarily agree with the casting of Steve Carell. I think when you have to alter an actor's appearance, it can distract from what the primary focus should be on. That being said, I was already a fan of Carell as an actor, and I think he was terrific. I also thought Channing Tatum was very good in what I saw as the most demanding role of the movie. Mark Ruffalo has played the nurturing big brother/role model type before. It's a role he is very good at, and this was no exception. I think it's a very good movie, but not one I would watch again.

Caesar and Cleopatra (1945}
Having only seen about 1/3 of the Elizabeth Taylor epic, and none of the Claudette Colbert version, I viewed this with fairly non-preconceived ideas. I truly loved it, despite no real action to speak of in a movie for which it might be expected. Lots of dialogue, but with it some really great acting by Claude Rains as Julius Caesar and Vivian Leigh as Cleopatra. Claude plays his part as a wise, aging soldier who is more about making friends now than enemies, although with a fight or two still in him; Vivian plays Cleo first as a spoiled young lady, then as a scheming woman who apparently has learned a lot about politics while sitting at Caesar's knee. Whether or not it works out for her or for Caesar plays out over the course of the movie. Flora Robson is super as Ftatateeta (try saying that 3 times fast!), Cleopatra's nurse-maid/nanny/right-hand woman from Cleo's birth on. And although Stewart Granger is third-billed, he is sort of wasted in his part of a Sicilian art expert who comes to Alexandria to sell Cleopatra some fine carpets. Still it is fun to see him sun-toned skin next to Vivian Leigh's pale epidermis. All-told, a fine two-plus hours of entertainment.

A standard bio-pic lifted by an excellent lead performance and a delightful soundtrack though nothing much else. I remember watching Selena with Jennifer Lopez, that seemed pretty standard as well. If it comes too, watch both with a sombrero and a bowl full of nachos at your side. Films don't strike a chord, you can always look back and have a bit of a laugh.

A little too fast paced compared to it's predecessor 'The Return Of The King', but 'The Battle Of The Five Armies' was a great way to end the trilogy. As always, it's visuals and make up are stupendous matched with the emotional blend just right for our taste. There are some bland moments like impossible coincidences, overused dialogues and an annoying character but somehow it left us something that made us satisfied nonetheless. It may not be as good as it's previous installment but 'The Battle Of The Five Armies', I have to admit was entertaining to watch.

White Dog (1982) 3
A young woman hits a dog in the middle of the night. She takes it to the vet, and ultimately home with her. She soon finds out it's a "white dog", yep, a dog trained to kill black people. She then brings it to an animal trainer to try and have it reconditioned. The movie takes itself seriously, and while effective and somewhat disturbing, it's best trait is the unintentional humor.

Broken Flowers - 5/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/79/Broken_Flowers_poster.jpg
This movie just felt empty. Seems like it ended before it started. There's a lot of driving, walking, waiting, nothing really happening. Even the few things we know about the characters is repeated.. "I was in the computer business" as he explains to each of the women he hasn't seen in years. I think there's a director's commentary, but I don't know if it's worth it, as there are other films to watch..

The Ox-Bow Incident 4
A very powerful film about what happens when men try to take justice into their own hands. Well-shot, well-acted, and straight to the point with its' themes. It clocks in at under 80 minutes and that is the perfect length to tell this story. Henry Fonda as always gives a great performance.

https://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/90/MPW-45280
The sequel to The 400 Blows, Antoine Doinel is now a little older and has become a detective, is he any good at it though? Somehow he always manages to make a mess out of everything, but it is so entertaining to watch it. I think I could watch Antoine Doinel do anything or nothing, and it would still be entertaining. I really liked this film. Truffaut is so good at showing ordinary things in entertaining ways.

Chappie - 7/10
Chappie is the latest action / sci-fi outting from the director of District 9 and Elysium. And even though it has three times the ambition of either of those movies, it sadly has only 1/3 the focus. Of the movie's three major conflicts (engineer vs engineer, engineer vs gang, gang vs gang) there was only room for two. Despite this, however, it was a lot of fun and definitely a lot meatier than most other movies of its kind, even better ones. I typed up my full review here. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - 5/10
I rewatched this as part of a tribute to Leonard Nimoy. People say that this is the best Star Trek movie, but I don't see it. Spock's death is touching to even a cursory fan of the series like me. The redoubled focus on character interaction over increasingly convoluted plot is likewise refreshing. Khan never worked in the movie for me, relying more on his reputation from the series than anything that he actually does on screen. I posted my full review here. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - 6/10
As ridiculous as it - and as a movie it is utterly absurd - this was my favorite of the series. It focused on the absurdly fun antics of the Enterprise crew in modern-day San Francisco and Kirk and Spock's sometimes strained friendship. Plus, you know, they saved the humpback whales! It's my first Buñel and I really liked it! I really liked the first half of the story, but I didn't care for the second.
However, it's in the second where some of the best scenes are and where the critic to society and religion is more obvious. It also must have something to do with the Franco regime in Spain, to which Buñuel was strongly opposed but I don't know that much about Spain's history to establish a strong connection.
It has an amazing sountrack and it's incredibly well-shot!

ROLLERBALL (1975)
A movie is what you bring to it. Won't try and explain all the reasons i enjoyed this film. Love baseball, basketball, & football (american), although my most successful sport as a player was lacrosse. It freed you up with physicality, hand-eye-coordination, and let you use a weapon *lacrosse rod* as well as hit people. This film captures the psyche of a competitor, and presents a futuristic sci-fi sports tale. Starring James Caan, wearing #6, leader of the Houston Rollerball Power team. Blood & guts. Brutal games, bashed in faces. Corporate interests vs the individual. This film has everything for me. Granting half-a-point-to-grow

I loved this movie. There might have been a word or two I couldn't understand, but the movie had a lot of feeling, mostly for the main character. Because he's a nice guy, he's taken advantage of, which is all too common, and that was the sad part. I tend to look at most films in the context of the world, and how the wrong people are taken advantage of. The guy wasn't perfect, but his heart was always in the right place.

Didn't really think much of this movie until a day after I watched it. Definitely a movie I'll need to rewatch again, as I believe it is one of those rare movies that gets better after each viewing. The concept is brilliant, the acting is great, the filming is marvellous too. However, it didn't really grasp my attention until I was 2/3 into it, and that might explain the rating.

Highly recommend if you like watching movies that deal with existentialism, enlightenment, mindfulness and if you like Gene Tierney.

Another great film by Mel Brooks. It is kind of messy and sort of overracted and overreacted to make you laugh, a bit more than the usual amount Mel Brooks puts in. Probably because it's one of his first films and his style hasn't been perfectly settled in yet, but also it's because The Producers also works greatly as a satire. Which is also different from tunica Mel Brooks films, as they are mostly parody-based. Overall, I liked it for having lots of humor I love and enjoy from the director, and at the same time very unique.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a4/Atlantic_City_%281980_film%29.jpg
Kind of a sleazy movie, considering Atlantic City. This was a film I always passed, I only rented it because of Lancaster. I don't think it had a good script. It was funny to hear when Sarandon grabs him, he says "Don't touch the suit" - one of the highlights of the film is when she's switching the radio and you can hear a tenth of a second of The Stylistics' "You Are Everything" - I was pretty proud of myself.
It's too bad that was the last film for Lancaster. Also found it odd that the Golden Lions awarded this movie Best Picture over Ordinary People, Raging Bull, The Shining, Gloria, etc etc.., especially since the first two are really great films.
Seems like something just happened in 1980. John Bonham dies, John Lennon is assassinated, some actor is elected president, drum machines and videos are ruining music, even the music of the 80's is mostly corny, that shiny Strat sound, corny keyboards, fake snares that are louder than the dialogue...

I really havn't seen that many but my favourites at the minute would be, Once Upon a time in the West, 3:10 to Yuma (1957), Liberty Valance, The Searchers, The Professionals, Josey Wales and TGTBATU. I enjoyed Shane too but wasn't a fan of McCabe, although it probably deserves a rewatch.

I've always considered this one of my favourite 'blockbusters'. My tastes have developed a lot, and I love all types of artistic stuff, but that doesn't stop me from admitting movies like this are equally as great, I've been wary about under/overrating it as it's been a while since I watched it in full, but it really is a great one, filled with so many clever and funny lines that really utilise the time setting. Three of my housemates watched it in the end, for the first time, and they all enjoyed it a lot too :D

Squeezed this move in tonight. I was wanting to watch this for a long time because it looked interesting and people said it was an underrated film.
The action was gritty with just the right amount of violence, and had a strong Assasin's Creed feel to it and it also looked like the movie borrowed the style of some others games too. This kind of action and a Mad Max route would have make a film I love. However, it takes itself way too seriously. The controversial ending was okay for me, but it should have belonged in a different flick.

Warrior (2011), Gavin O'Connor
Gooood old style movie, with everything you'd expect from it. We have two troubled brothers, an ex drunk dad, money problems, some heroic act in Iraq, a fuc*ed up family. Really, everything. Oh, of course the two brothers haven't talked to each other in ages.
Every possible cliche ever, including a russian super-opponent.
But despise all the cliches, or maybe because of these very cliches and the clever use that's done with them, the movie works out great. We care about the characters, we like the figthing scenes (I liked that there are so many shots from OUTSIDE the ring and the cage), we feel every punch and kick in our very guts. Add some great acting work and an awesome final scene with a perfect song, and you'll have Warrior, a movie that's shamelessly stereotyped and proud of it.
If you like to focus more on how a story is told rather than how original the story itself is, you'll love it.
I also read a review on IMDB criticizing the plausibility of the fighting scenes, and to that of course I say "pff".
I give it a 8 out of 10 until I can figure out how to do the cool popcorn stuff you guys do.

One almost can says that it was Kurosawa who invented the Spaghetti-Western subgenre, such is the similarity that Leone's A Fistfull of Dollars has to this.
It's a badass movie, half comedy - half drama, brilliantly shot, with an amazing soundtrack and a great performance by the main character.
I still prefer High and Low, which is the other Kurosawa I've seen so far, but this is great!

ERIN BROCKOVICH (2000)
Erin Brockovich is a broke single mother who just can't seem to find the right opportunity. She fights her way to become an assistant at an attorneys office, and unravels a strong case against a big California power company- PG&E. The story does a really good job of creating a bridge of communication between corporate business, lawyers, and the much less fortunate victims. Erin Brockovich brings that connection, and talks in a real way that is fun to listen to. I also really liked Albert Finney's lawyer character, Ed. Thankful these people brought a sort of magic alchemy to the story and made it very engaging and memorable

Manhattan - 8/10 - 2nd time viewing this. I wanted a sure win, so I went with this, and because I rented it on DVD, didn't find any special features. I never check out the trailer, but I did this time, and thought I should see how it was shown to the public before it was out.
Great film, and funny, which is so hard for me to find.. It's like Annie Hall in many ways, but a little different. I wish Woody made more movies like this. I love how complicit he can be, wishing for something when it's convenient (like Annie going to college in A.H.), and how he changes every little thing. I love how Muriel Hemingway's character is very mature even though she's 17 and has the voice to match it, but listen to what she says. And Isaac is immature. I love the many movie references - Bergman, Brando, 2001, Fellini characters, movie novelizations, La Grande Illusion, W.C. Fields...
Typical Woody film I guess with a great script with Marshall Brickman, NY, psychobabble, it's funny, especially the skeleton scene.
Has anyone seen Interiors? I don't know if I've seen it, if you guys recommend it, I'll get it.

I love it, probably my 2nd favorite movie in the 90's after American Beauty. I think it has some humor in it, but it's a movie about the meaning of life, and I like that stuff. It has style too, which I usually don't like in films. The characters are given depth, another plus. No waste in the film. And the polar messages in the very beginning and the end, the duality of man. I think I gave it an 8.

Moby Dick, John Huston
Ahrrrr, man the harpoons. I read the book a couple years ago, hating it and loving it at the same time. This movie does a pretty decent job at portraying the mystical fight between a man and a whale, mainly thanks to Gregory Peck who pulls off a great Ahab.
Moby Dick wasn't an easy book to make a film out of, and Houston does his best to convey both its adventurous and its introspective side. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it goes less well. Quiqueg is like the weird uncle most of the family forgets having, and it takes more than close ups on intense facial expression while delivering a monologue to make a scene unforgettable. Luckily, as I said, said monologues are delivered by guys like Welles (his scene might as well be the best in the movie, on a ship in a church, with that rope always in the shot. He would have a great Ahab too) and Peck. But then again it was 1956 and the movie is mainly set on a ship, so there was only so much Huston could do. The storm scene is pretty cool, the first whale hunting scene is awful but they get better, and the final battle against Moby Dick is exciting enough.
I don't know, I think it's a good movie but nowhere close to Moby Dick.
I'll give it a 6/10.
EDIT: uh I read now that Peck's performance was widely criticized, even by himself. Meh, I liked him.

Watched this with a couple of my housemates. I love spy films, so I have no idea why it took my so long to get to this. Fantastic all star British cast, direction and cinematography. The film starts off slowly introducing to us to a lot of complex sub stories relating to the different characters through flashbacks, but everything comes together brilliantly, leading to an awesome ending. Tense throughout, I can see why some may find it difficult to follow, but I thought it was fine. Gary Oldman shows he can do restrained, and I don't think he's been better than in this, at least from what I've seen of him. Great film.

A true gem amongst the many, many other modern fairy-tale movies which are twisted and mangled for extra grit, darkness and depth meant to appeal to 21st century audiences. Cinderella does not rewrite the classic story, it revives it in a very sweet way; it retains most of the Disney princess magic children have grown up with for decades. Not much has to be changed in the story to give the benevolent princess, the villainous stepmother and prince charming a bit more dimension than these stock characters usually posses, and that's all a revival of a fairy-tale needs, really. If you're not into traditional narratives, watch it for the visuals alone. Lush and very stunning. The whole movie was a delicious piece of eye-candy.

Billy Pilgrim becomes unstuck in time ( I love this definition) and can relive moments from his life, mainly the bad moments (even tho some really naughty voyeur aliens from planet Tralfamadore teach him that only the happy moments are worth remembering) such as a plane crash, a POW camp and the bombing of Dresden, jumping effortlessly from one to the other.
The movie has its good moments but it lacks in unforgettable moments. I loved the scene at the drive-in, but I doubt I'll remember it in one year, same for the nice image towards the end of Billy buried underneath a clock. The best thing is probably the clever editing in the scenes when Billy travels in time, with elements like a movement or a sound which are presented in the next scene in a completely different context.
This movie also features, in no particular order of preference: good soundtrack, boobs, a cute dog.

Yeah sure, but wouldn't you say that it is much more similiar to Taxi Driver in style, character, theme and feel? To me it honestly almost feels like an unconnected sequel of some sort, a modern version of Taxi Driver.
In this post (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1200369#post1200369) I agreed with Sexy Celebrity in the sense that I also didn't think Nightcrawler and Taxi Driver had many similarities. You should read the small conversation and share your thoughts. ;)

For a micro-budget film debut this film is extremely impressive. Considering how tiny the budget is the film still manages to build a decent atmosphere and have a quite interesting story. The sad part however is that after this and Memento Nolan went completely down hill. Regardless of my indifference towards the majority of his filmography, I remain impressed with this debut.

Matt Damon was awful in it but the rest was good... I enjoyed and I didn't even realize it ran almost 3 hours. I like the atmosphere that Nolan creates... it kinda reminded me a bit of Inception.

Midnight Run, Martin Brest.
Ah, I love this movie. How could I not?! I enjoy buddy movies a lot, and this is a cleverly written, cleverly acted and cleverly directed one. De Niro and Grodin have a great chemistry together, which makes the unlikely friendship between a bounty hunter and a hundred thousand dollars worth accountant extremely believable.
What's unbelievable instead, is how you were allowed to smoke anywhere back in the 80s. De Niro has a cigarette in his mouth basically in every shot, even on a bus.

As Matt said a page or so earlier this film is pretty similar to There Will be Blood in a lot of aspects. There were some exciting moments but overall the movie bored me and the only thing that is worth the tons of praise is the performance of the lead actor, in which the case of Nightcrawler is Gyllenhaal's performance. Honestly, he really deserved at least an oscar nod. The way the dark and ominous night looks is awesome and is used really well, but is it used to to keep me excited? Didn't feel like it did to me.

I watched this for the first time recently. I didn't think much of Eastwood's performance as the almost completely inept redneck cop, and I wouldn't really describe Laura Dern as an actor to be honest. But Costners performance saved it from being a 3 star to a 3 and a half star film for me.

Dern is fantastic, and Eastwood totally nails his role as well. A Perfect World is Costner's best film, and Eastwood was at the top of his game as far as directing. Great, great movie.

The Hustler (1961) Repeat viewing 4
I've always loved this movie, and if there was more in the pool hall, this would be a 5 star movie for me. I relate to it well, as at one time the drinking, smoking, and gambling all night was my element. It's just that when it's not in the pool hall, it really drags for me. Paul Newman, George C. Scott, and Piper Laurie are all great in this, but Jackie Gleason makes this movie. There's a reason Orson Welles nicknamed him the great one. Wow. He has a presence and air about him that's almost unmatched. It's too bad he wasn't more of a movie star. In that regard, he kind of reminds me of Welles.

I didn't like his acting and him in that role.. because the character is terrible... it's like it's from another movie, it doesn't fit at all with the whole feel of the movie and it's distracting. Oh here comes the crazy bad guy trying to kill everyone cause he's been on his own for so long and his survival instincts kick in and he wants to go home. To be honest Matt Damon kinda sucks lately cause he keeps picking bad roles. Don't get me wrong, I used to like Damon quite a lot when he used to to be good in movies like Bourne. Good Will Hunting and The Departed.
He fooled me. Now I can see him as the movie's HAL. :)
The difference is: HAL is actually a brilliant character! :p

My girlfriend loves spanish cinema so I ended watching this yesterday! Watching an Almodovar's film is like entering in a parallel universe, such is the amount of layers of every character! It's extremely well written and shot, with top notch perfomances by the two main characters, especially Gael Garcia Bernard, and with a beautiful soundtrack!
Another masterpiece!

I started this, had exactly 3 hours (length of the film) before the NBA double-header. Didn't care for the start, and almost turned it off, as I have dozens of other films I could have seen, and want to see. But I kept at it, turned out really good.

Two points:
- Why does everyone keep comparing Nightcrawler to There Will Be Blood? I don't get it? Both characters are a bit crazy, that's it.
- Laura Dern is awesome.

The last two are based off the works by the English Novelist Thomas Hardy. They may seem like romances but they are far from that. Mr Hardy's writings are very dark and obscure for the time period they are written. I still have two to finish watching other films and re-watch "Far from the Madding Crowd".

We Need To Talk About Kevin, Lynne Ramsay.
Geez, hopefully I settled the argument with my wife whether or not we should have kids.
The title is pretty awful, it makes it sound like one of those indie fox searchlight movies where Kevin is a weird boy who goes on a journey to discover himself. Well, nope. Kevin is a f*cking sociopath and it's sad that no help whatsoever is given to him by his parents. The dad is probably the saddest character of this movie, so unaware of everything that's going on in his family.
Ramsay does a great job keeping up the suspense throughout the whole movie, always keeping us wondering what the hell are those flashing sirens for. What happened? What did Kevin do? We find out only at the very end, but we spend the whole movie trying to guess why he did whatever he did. Who's fault is it? His own? His parents? What went so terribly wrong? The only thing I can accuse the director of, is that sometimes she tries a little too hard to deliver original\cool\artistic\poetic\symbolic\blabla shots, when she could have just kept it simple. It never becomes overwhelming tho.
Tilda Swinton is great, matched only by kid-Kevin. I don't know if they actually chose a mean looking little boy or the young actor just happened to be good, but he really makes you want to reach through the screen and give him some good ol' spankin' right on his diapered butt.

After Hours
http://i.imgur.com/MCXbxRb.jpg
This film is severely underrated. Not underseen because actually it was a modest box office success, but just plainly underrated. I feel guilty for not seeing it until now. Even more than King of Comedy, which is getting a better and better reputation from word of mouth. The one who needs help now is After Hours.
After Hours can be summarized as a comical and satirical nightmare and a circling chain of doom. All the things happening around the main characters are plain crazy and have old screwball comedy elements but are deliriously and darkly funny. For After Hours to work it needed to go extreme, and it's what it did. Not too long (94 min. running time) and not too complicated (not a very hard plot), it's a masterpiece by legendary director Scorcese.
4.5+
Glad you liked it but i feel this reenforces my opinion that it's underseen rather than underrated, since i've still yet to see anyone say they dislike After Hours but i can mention two on this site alone that dislikes King Of Comedy.
Remember Sean said he didn't love it, he didn't say he disliked it either ;) .
I meant underrated by general audience. But with film buffs it's definitely more on the underseen side. So I agree with you. ;)
About Sean, well if you're a huge fan of Wes Anderson humor you might not like After Hour humor that much. The two are very different in my opinion.
I meant underrated by general audience. But with film buffs it's definitely more on the underseen side. So I agree with you. ;)
Yeah sorry. I thought you were responding to my earlier comment about us weirdos ;) .

Cinderella (2015)

I have fond memories of watching the animated version as a kid. This version stayed true to the animated storyline and also gave extra details that added to the backstory for the main characters. I enjoyed everything about this movie from the set, special effects, costumes and casting. I have also experienced losing a parent and found myself tearing up multiple times throughout the movie- but in the end, I left the theater feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Also, be warned you might OD on cuteness from the mice and the adorable kiddos watching the movie in costume.

The Wolf of Wall Street (-1/10) - The worst movie I have ever saw in my life. Not only was this a waste of 3 hours, but I'm sure I lost three years of my life knowing effete trash like this exists. I only watched this in its entirety to show I gave it a chance. Imagine if Goodfellas was a guy, Casino was his sister, and the incest led to this "film." It even sounded like Ray Liotta was narrating. I typed a lot, though the only spoiler is this piece of junk, I'll spare the horrible details.
