So I just watched this for the first time in years, and as I often tend to nitpick things, I have a few beefs about this film regarding character shortsightedness. First off, who would spy on their neighbors through large uncovered windows with the lights on, allowing whoever is being watched to potentially see you? You would think the guy would try to be a little more covert. He should've at least tried to be more stealthy after he suspected a murder, like any rational person would. Then, after he's discovered, he doesn't anticipate that the killer would come after him next? Most perpetrators want to silence their witnesses. The killer expectedly pays him a visit, and instead of Mr. Snoop grabbing a blunt object and concealing it behind his back, he foolhardily decides to blind the guy with his camera's flash. It's unlikely that an attacker would stop and go, letting him reload film each time. Imagine it were bullets being loaded. Would you wait for someone to shoot you twice? Any normal killer would've went straight at him. Moreover, why didn't the photog just take pictures of what he saw? He's already holding a camera. I guess he got so caught up in all of it that he wasn't thinking wisely. Oh well, this is classic cinema nonetheless.

Their survival depended upon a paucity of pencil-sized tubes filled with caffeine powder? Hadn't they contemplated the other contrariety to moisture? It's this thing called fire. I enjoyed the movie overall, suspenseful, but the ending was stupid. No way the kid could defeat a monster of that size with two little sticks of powder. They should have just torched the alien.

Gee, a body-snatching movie where the only way to find and destroy the alien is through heat and fire? Groundbreaking.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/be/Tigerlandmp.jpg/215px-Tigerlandmp.jpg

I liked the premise of this film and the performances are outstanding (particularly Farrell). As a boot-camp film it is fine, it's the contradiction of "Bozz" that holds the attention. Anti-war and a no-hoper but thrives in the brotherhood and has clear abilities in the strict confines of the draft. Always good to see Clifton Collins Jr. in any part. My mate gave me a DVD yonks ago so I saw Farrells try out in the extras too. Good.

Some bits are great when the dialogue comes off, some are pretty "acty". 7/10

Never been a fan of DiCaprio, though he does a reasonable job in this film. The problem isn't him, or that the movie isn't realistic enough (obviously it's supposed to be fiction), but how farfetched the ideas are. Another gripe I have concerns the mechanism by which the group performs synced dreaming. What are the workings of this gizmo? It's never explained. The gang just falls asleep in proximity with wires connected to one another, and wake up in each other's dreams. How do they choose which person's head they'll be entering? Then there's the idea that a person can have cognizance and causation in a dream, directing its orientation with such clarity and detail. One pilots the course and molds the environment. Which we all know never happens. Dreams ultimately govern you—not the other way around. It would be different if the events took place in a supernatural context; then there wouldn't be need for such scrutiny. However, the concept of inception is portrayed as possible by a machine/sedative. And there's so much else to probe. Again, this bombardment of fantastic ideas leaves me perplexed. Yet it's a rather intriguing exploration of the incredible. Just a little "out there". Suppose it's more about the visuals.

Rubbish take on the "new gothic" genre that should have been a novella and stayed that way. Some of the special effects are decent but the main problem is that you don't *care* about anybody. Any character. A self regarding film. Hiddleston and Hunnam toil to even approach believable-ness, 3/10

I thought this would be a surprise movie in the same kind of way Happy Death Day was last year, but it was not to be. Going into it, I kinda knew it wouldn't be, but I hoped it would just be a solid standalone movie for this time of year. Everything about it just felt...ordinary. The plot was exactly how you would expect a haunted house killer story to go. The dialogue was elementary, and the acting was the same. I felt the movie tried to scare you with the haunted house tricks more than the actual murderer. Loud noises and jump scares abound.

In the end, you have a Halloween/Happy Death Day hybrid that did nothing special. I wanted to give this a little higher rating, but I really can't recommend people to go see this. The movie ending left the story open for a sequel, but I have no intent at all on following up with it.

Concluding tale of Yakuza infighting and honour. Otomo (Beat) is again the pivot in this. And he's great. Less up close and personal from the 2 preceding installments due to a lot of travelling. It ends the way you foresaw a Takeshi Kitano Yakuza film ending, satisfying but sad. Great trilogy. Overall mark, 9/10. Just to add to say I didn't think I'd get over KT not using Jo Hisaishi for his soundtracks but the musical pacing especially in "coda" is superb.

It’s hard to grasp that this came from the master Steven Soderberg...erm I mean Spielberg, in his mature years. It does have enjoyable parts such as the shining scene and playful energy but it’s just superficial eye candy. Spielberg has regressed to the Hollywood norm (of today) by churining out a eye candy throwaway film. Lack of depth, minimal and awkward characters, convoluted plot. I thought it was watchable but not more.

The Cranes Are Flying (1957)

A Russian film that eloquently captures the pathos of lost love in war-time, while showing how the desperation of misery can lead one into being trapped in unwanted situations.
The scenes of the war front, the injured soldiers, and the citizens back home, attempting to survive while being attacked with bombs, felt realistic, even as the filmmakers tactfully avoided the gore you might see in other such genre films.
This movie, though, is about one woman's pain, first and foremost, and it wasn't difficult to sympathize with her as she struggled to remain optimistic, hoping she would eventually meet her former lover again.

What I'm most interested in cinema, it's new forms of expression, new sensations, new ways to see Image & Sound! For this reason, this film is GREAT! Once again I say: The most important thing for me it's how it is made, not 'just' the history! In some films, for me, the history doesn't even matter.

This is a childhood favorite. I've seen it dozens of times and it never gets old. That said, this was actually the first time I'd seen it in several years; the last time was when I still had the old pan-and-scan DVD (it was a gift, so it would have been a bit rude to turn it down) which irked me since Dad had instilled it in me to always watch a movie in its original aspect ratio. My exposure to animation has been, for quite some time, mostly limited to some anime, so this was kind of a break from form. With all of that said, how does it stand the test of time? Very well, for my money. It's still a blast from start to finish, the story is still a good one, the humor still works and the voices ever continue to fit the characters. Craig T. Nelson is a perfect match for Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible. He's always been believable and this one proves no exception. You really believe that he's not only a superhero but a husband and father and that can be attributed to the fact that Nelson's portrayed so many of those in his live-action work. In nearly everything he's been, notably Poltergeist, Coach, The District and Parenthood, he's reminded me of my own father in some way and yes, that's the case here as well. There's a scene where he says to his wife Helen, aka Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), the exact same thing Dad says to Mom all the time: "I didn't want you to worry!" Of course she shoots back with, "You didn't want me to worry?!" That's what Mom says every time Dad tells her that. There are also things only adults will pick up on; I've only just realized Helen thought Bob was cheating. So, yeah, it was great and the Blu-ray looks and sounds the part, too. The animation is clearer than ever (and not chopped off). And the audio... Oh, boy, the audio, equally as important as the video (if not more so for some). We get a (to quote a side character) "totally wicked!" DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Explosions rumble, engines hum, dialogue is always crystal clear and I found myself noticing cues in Giacchino's musical score that seemed to be just now revealing themselves. I can't believe I had this sitting on my shelf for over a year. I should have taken another look at this one a lot sooner. Later, guys.

I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but I thought it would be a notch up from Big Ass Spider and perhaps as good as Deep Blue Sea... characters so one dimensional... Stathom is like a fish but you don't really know why he has these mad skills...his romance with a pretty Asian woman doesn't come off the page as take root on it.. never really got a feeling for the size of the meg apart from a few shots they used in the trailer to sell the film, rest of time its bumping into things, I turned it off with 20 minutes to go.

4.0: Some coming of age films are usually happy despite having some dramatic moments. This film for me brings a more realistic take on the coming of age film. Jodie Foster, Cherie Currie, Marilyn Kagan, and Kandice Stroh (with Scott Baio as a tagalong confidant) have this natural chemistry. Film debuts of Currie, Kagan, and Stroh, as well as Laura Dern who plays an annoying nerdy girl who is in one scene.

There must be a goldmine of movies I haven't seen because a film like Adaptation is so unique and goofy and well written and acted that for it to be kind of regarded as a macdowell's cheeseburger..I dunno. I know - it's not a "good" movie, but I was enjoying it because I had absolutely zero expectations. I find that is the best way to get through a part III to something beloved. Hogan still delivers regardless of the cliche'd movie and cringe-worthy moments throughout. There are some nice bits. Some of it is bad, but it's not all bad.

The George Hamilton cameo was ridiculous.

What a strange little film. There are literal (cat and mouse thriller) and allegorical sides (abusive relationships, trust), neither of which are air tight, but one picks up the slack when the other falters. It almost feels like a foreign film at times where you aren't sure if you're interpreting the tone correctly. This could easily be darkly comedic but never indulges that. It sounds like a mess the way I'm describing it, but it all comes off as very intentional and purposeful. It's an enigma with solid craft and thematic heft. I'm pretty sure I like it.

Hostile (2017) (Dir. Mathieu Tiru) 1
https://i.imgur.com/EvGPT5d.png

The melodramatic half is insufferable with the cologne ad art gallery guy saving this wretch off of the streets and straightening her out for a while. The horror half of the film is fine despite our protagonist ricocheting between competent badass and helpless fish out of water constantly. The two halves don't reconcile very well tonally, but the contrast is obviously intended, though the thematic tie of the female character being hopeless fending for herself is quite gross.

The creature design is rather unsettling. The bottled setting is comforting. It's unfortunate the director is only interested in torturing and blaming his lead despite appreciating her as iconography on a superficial level. It's impressive how boldly Tiru has appropriated a trend of female empowerment as a way to further deride them. The ending is also one of the worst of all time.

Final Portrait. 2017

This is a low key movie about three weeks in the 60s when the writer James Lord sat for a portrait by the artist Alberto Giacometti. Based on recollections from Lord, what we are really seeing is a portrait of an artist and his process. It's also as much a memoir/documentary as a movie. And although there is not a whole lot of traditional 'storyline' to the narrative, I found that the depiction of the artist and his creative process was so authentic, I felt I met and knew him through this film.
.
Giacometti was an artist who achieved great fame and financial success, known more for his spindly elongated sculptures, of an almost grotesque yet primal elegance, which are shown spaced throughout his Parisian studio.

The artist, btw, is not a man who was easy to admire. He is callous and cruel to his long suffering wife, as he blatantly courts and indulges a prostitute who is young enough to be his daughter, or more likely, granddaughter. He somehow takes this young lady to be his Muse, and it becomes apparent that this was an honored position that his wife, who still loves him, once held.

Giacometti promised Lord that the sitting will take a few hours , then a few days, which stretch into weeks. During that time we see the artist working and erasing and reworking the painting, while in the throes of self degradation and doubt of his abilities. It is inexplicable to the straight laced stodgy Lord (and I ' m sure, to some of the audience) why this man, who is so egotistical and selfish as a human being, is so unsure and riddled with doubt and disdain of his own art and abilities. However, if you, as a viewer, have ever been strongly involved with the arts, ( as a dedicated artist of some discipline yourself, as a close comrade of a driven artist, or even as an appreciative viewer) you will find this aspect of the man rings as true as the clang of a steeple bell on a clear October morn. The man throws his artwork on the floor, and is in equal disregard of his fortune, hiding millions of francs in his messy studio so well, he forgets where he puts them.

The uncombed and untamed regal fluff of his hair, his shabby attire, the walks with Lord in a graveyard as Alberto merrily and wittily pontificates on art, Picasso, and life ,and the studio where you can almost smell the paint and the dust - all are real and speak of truth of this man and his world. . Note that the cinematographer chose to shoot the studio in a monochrome, while outside scenes - the streets and cafes of Paris- are bathed in colorful glow- - a way of saying, perhaps, that life can be bountiful but the hard driven passion of creating some object of worth is as stark and dry as a bone.

The main characters are revealed layer by layer, and the character study is more pressing in this film than a storyline. But for me, the entire ride was engaging. It may not sound like it, but there is a a great deal of humor sewn all through the movie. even towards the end as Lord and Alberto's brother hatch a plot to end the sitting.

Diego, the brother, is played so well with an air of Zen like calm and mystery, that I didn't even recognize the talented Tony Shalhoub in the role.

A final observation, this quiet film raises more questions than it answers: about the nature of artistic genius, the mysteries of creating, and the frustration and confoundment of those who are bound to deal with this man. But they are questions you may well enjoy mulling over at a later time.

As I said, I enjoyed the film, But then, after seeing it, I knew Giacometti. And how can you not enjoy a movie about someone you have met and known personally?

RATING: four out of five stars

Because I understand that this movie may not appeal to everyone, I didn't give it a 5 star rating - and besides, I'm sure Alberto himself wouldn't want to carry the onus of that kind of perfection.

Louise by the Shore, a great French animated movie of aging.
Louise, an elderly woman is visiting a fictional resort seaside town that completely shuts down over the winter. However, she misses the last train out for the season and has to survive the winter on her own with only her wits, memories and one old stray dog named Pepper.
Very charming tale for anyone even thinking about getting old.

Knuckleball (Michael Peterson, 2018)
4.5
Think of Home Alone as a Canadian-set thriller about a 12-year old who is visiting his grandfather during the winter in a small town. When Grandpa dies in his sleep, the boy gets help from the next door neighbor, who slowly becomes a sociopath and goes after the boy...with some truly WTF twists. Former Degrassi star Munro Chambers' crazy neighbor is one of my favorite indie villains this year...he gives a very haunting performance but the Home Alone gags are amped up a very dangerous notch.

Ride (Jeremy Ungar, 2018)
4.0
When an aspiring actor/Uber driver picks up a woman in L.A., he thinks about her after dropping her off and his next ride, a slowly unhinged man, convinces the driver to get the girl and soon enough, the wild night in L.A. is about to get dangerous. Great performances from Jessie Usher and Bella Thorne, but Will Brill takes the cake as the unhinged Bruno.

Tale of obsession and I didn't find it that shocking at all. Rampling is incredible. The part of the film about the "Trials" and "making peace" I found intriguing...more could have made more of that aspect.

My first observation of this 70s war film of the vital Battle Of Midway in 1942 was it is a reunion for a bunch of aging former box office stars. In the cast were Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Toshiro Mifune, Glenn Ford and Robert Mitchum... all well past their prime. Midway just took too long to get into its stride. Action scenes were mostly actual war footage while I had a chuckle at the purloined Tora, Tora, Tora footage. In a word disappointing for a big budget war flick. http://prometheus-unbound.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/2-Star-Rating.png

Hold the Dark (2018) (Dir. Jeremy Saulnier) 4
https://i.imgur.com/iTwugwD.jpg

While I have enjoyed all of Saulnier's prior output, I was left wanting something hardier after the all too digestible Green Room. His latest offering via Netflix delivers on that end as a frigid Iraq War allegory with a rather opaque resolution. It also fills the moody, existential thriller void left by True Detective's first season which neither the second season nor Taylor Sheridan's Wind River managed to fill. Perhaps the most immediate takeaway from Hold the Dark is thus: revenge may don the mask of reason but is often as senseless as the act which provoked it.

In a strong year for film A Star is Born will end up being an Oscar surefire bet. Bradley Cooper is going to likely end up with four oscar nominations (producing, writing, directing, staring) and he's got a great shot at two of them. While the film is a remake three times over and deals with a plot and story you've seen dozens of times before it's still going to be a contender for several reason.

The music, this has an all-time soundtrack.
The chemistry, Cooper was a mad man pulling performances from a hodgepodge of actors you would never think to put together and yet they all fell in wonderfully.
The writing and directing, it's shot very well and it's written with a level of realism that these sort of films never have.

Edgar Allan Poe wrote some good tomes and some not so good. Whether The Premature Burial is one of them is up to the reader. The 1962 film with the moderately talented Ray Miland is a little convoluted to be brutally honest. His disturbed character needed someone like The Rock to smack him out of his obsession that he was going to be buried alive one day. English actress Hazel Court adds some glamour and intrigue as his devious wife. http://prometheus-unbound.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/2-Star-Rating.png

So, this is now, along with Akira, the only anime I've actually watched subbed. It was an amazing experience, every bit as entertaining, thought-provoking and emotionally satisfying in Japanese as it is in English. I remember reading Kenneth Brown's review (he reviewed all of Miyazaki's films back then) of the film's 2011 Blu-ray release on Blu-ray.com when I was 14, more than a year after it had been posted; I guess I should remember since it was this review that made me decide right away that I wanted to see it. So, anyway he mentions "a series of excellent performances by the original 1984 Japanese cast and the 2005 American ensemble," and he couldn't be more right. Having seen the movie both dubbed (several times, in fact) and subbed, I can say without holding any qualms about it whatsoever that I agree. Sumi Shimamoto is excellent as Nausicaä and Alison Lohman rises to match her (take a look at the scene with the Acid Lake); the same can be said for the rest of the two casts as well. The translation is excellent as well; the English dub says the exact same thing as the original Japanese aside from rewording certain lines so that they are more natural in English and losing a few throwaway profanities, even featuring some word-for-word direct translations. Some things are worth mentioning, though and these are just my observations. The Japanese swear word "kuso" is heard on the audio track seven times, five of which are translated in the subtitles as "Damn!" while the other two aren't subtitled. The reason I mention this is that "kuso" is generally taken to mean "s--t." However, I've heard rumblings online that it can also mean "damn" and it depends on who's translating; the Pioneer dub of Akira even translates it as "f--k" near the beginning when Tetsuo falls off his bike. Also, while the Toxic Jungle is indeed called the Sea of Decay in Japanese (again, they mean basically the same thing and Toxic Jungle is a better fit in the English language), the Giant Warrior is not called a "God Warrior," but rather a Giant Warrior, just as it is in the dub. Some have taken issue with how Nausicaä's name is pronounced in the dub (mostly online), saying it should be pronounced "Naw-sic-ee-uh," but all I can say is that I've only ever heard it pronounced "Naw-sic-uh," which is also exactly how it's pronounced in Japanese, though I am aware she was named after a Greek princess; they're probably the ones who insist Kaneda should be pronounced "Kah-nee-dah" even though it's pronounced "Kah-nay-duh" in Japanese, rendering "Kuh-nay-duh" a correct transliteration and "Kah-nee-dah" incorrect. To be honest, though, watching Nausicaä subbed only made me appreciate just how good the dub is, and I think that's how I'll continue to watch the film; Miyazaki himself did say he prefers English-speaking fans watch his films dubbed, after all. But subbed or dubbed, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a terrific film, ranking high on a list that includes Akira, Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away as one that should be seen by any lover of film. It's entertaining, beautifully animated and lovingly crafted, well-written, exceptionally well-paced, thought-provoking, uplifting, poignant, emotionally satisfying and considerably rewarding; I also strongly suspect most seeing it for the first time will want to return to it repeatedly as I have. Later, guys.

As an Australian I am embarrassed by the Croc Dundee sequels.

I'm a bit of a sucker for time travel mind bender type flicks, and this one was quite decent, if flawed, and really not too hard to follow. Liked the premise, the twists, the low-budget indie vibe, but there was one problem - it ended too quickly for me, in an underwhelming way. I just thought it needed further development and another big punch at the end.

Overall, a fascinating watch, and a must for time travel fans. Of course if you scrutinize the story, you will find holes, but I just chose to look past that and let the story take me where it wanted to go - and it more or less worked.

The dark knight rises

Not ashamed to say but this is one of my favourite films. It would sit comfortably in my top 50. Not ashamed because it’s great! Maybe gets a bit muddled with the timeline and other things but when you use some common sense and maybe a couple of rewatches it all clicks and captivates.

Bane raises the hairs on the back of my neck - his presence is FELT. Tate is hot, cat woman is a badass asskicking long legged and smart hottie. Alfred almost gets me crying. Robin fits the bill as a competent side kick. Just lovely all of it. Of course Bale is the perfect Wayne and Batman.

Nolan as a director suits my palate. A mixture of entertainment, intelligence, emotion and ideas with visual flair. He hasn’t made a film I don’t like.

Very sad that these great films are at an end and the Batman name has been yet again returned to mud. As sad as it is and how it makes me long for more I am content with the trilogy. 3 movie - all strong in their own right, together making one of the better trilogies of the modern era just a level below lord of the rings for quality which is no besmirch.

Why do you think placing the comma there corrects the sentence? It merely changes the structure. You’ve changed it and it’s now very unusual. Who says. Learn to use... and then a pause for mate. Eg learn to use this iro. You changed it to, learn to use this, iro. Was the pause necessary?

A film about economic anxieties whether they be the rapid pace of globalization or the increasingly precarious state of labor or the alienating effect of competition redefining social relations, a reality in which the only way to sooth these worries is to consume, here a literal consummation of the self, an apt allegory for the self-destructive nature of capitalism.

You make it sound like commas have the exact same halting effect on one's reading comprehension that full stops do and that it somehow makes more sense to reference one noun directly after another in "full stops mate" than it does to separate them with a comma like "full stops, mate". Your example of "learn to use this Iro" makes it sound like you're telling someone to learn how to use an "Iro" instead of telling someone called Iro to learn to use something. To answer your question - yes, the pause was necessary.

Director: Bradley Cooper

This one is practically the start-point of the Oscar season films, and you'll have a hard time finding a stronger stepping stone to the slate of hard-hitting dramas. This is Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, he's become very popular in the acting game as he has proven himself a notable artist, now he takes his passion for the arts to showcase on two new levels: directing, and vocal performance, does he deliver? Oh does he ever, this film about an acclaimed and extremely successful country singer who falls for a bar performer with huge passion and little luck is immaculate. What follows is two hours of intimacy, art, soaring music to contrast a colossally emotional tale, and an elevated love story that might just feel timeless.

Bradley Cooper delivers on all fronts, his acting is magnificent, he puts on his character like an article of clothing and just completely becomes him. His singing is beyond serviceable, it is not hard to buy that this character has been through it all in the music industry. His directing, particularly for a first-timer is pretty great, he knows exactly how to execute the different beats that make up the story. Lady Gaga, there's no other way to describe her, she's completely jaw-dropping, she's the true embodiment of a superstar, a revelation. She brings so much passion, fire, innocence and intensity to her character, it would be foolish to dismiss her artistry, because she has it all. The soundtrack is great. The film does a commendable job at balancing the singing career fiasco with the love story fiasco, and it turn, it delivers thought-provoking themes on both: the downfall of one's passion for art to produce commercial art and the effects of the latter on a strong relationship.

My only flaw is really that the film was noticeably a little too long, it's a tricky thing to dissect because it is Cooper's directorial debut, and he was just too married to every single shot. I look at specific moments and I think: "yeah, twenty minutes could've been easily shaven off". I'll retract from giving this a perfect score considering that problem, but I smell many repeat viewings for this film. Guys, watch this, it's inspiring filmmaking about artistry, love and passion, executed with the right amount of heart and tragedy. Beautiful.

SCORE - 94/100

This is one of those obscure war films that pop up from time to time. No big Hollywood names, no big Hollywood budget. Bottom line it is not a bad film. Has parallels with Force 10 from Navarone and The Dirty Dozen. The work was not without flaws but overall enjoyable. http://prometheus-unbound.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/3-Star-Rating.png

I don't know if the Oscar season started as much as it ended with this. Cooper is going to end up earning 3-5 Oscar nominations himselffor this film (Producing, writing, acting, directing and he wrote a song). The real question is how well does it do in the song category because that could push it towards most nominations all-time if it sweeps(and it could sweep).

A bit too muted and implicit for my taste but it is interesting to see a thriller done with such tact and nuance. It's a nice twist on a South Korean standard which doesn't brutalize the audience or even clue them in very often. It's quite literary, and I think the lack of an inner voice to help ferry us through the thought process which you find in a novel conveys our protagonist's lack of thought, as does Yoo Ah-in's slack jawed performance. Only upon beginning to finally write does he find agency in the story. I admire it, but sitting through it was kind of a chore.

Absolutely agree! I can see this being another La La Land in the sense that it gathers all the sound/music nominations and a good handful of the other ones as well, can't wait to see it, it really deserves it. I can't see Bradley and Gaga NOT being nominated for their acting.

I think "A Star is Born" is gonna be too sugary sweet to win a lot, in light of how many noms it gets.

There is a lot of speculation that it was released so early and a fatigue will set in. Also, released early in light of it's upcoming competition. Get Out was one of the few early (way early) films to carry steam, but that was due to being something no one had ever seen before.

Then again there is this maybe? pop-movie category. We shall see.

And although there is not a whole lot of traditional 'storyline' to the narrative, I found that the depiction of the artist and his creative process was so authentic, I felt I met and knew him through this film.
...
As I said, I enjoyed the film, But then, after seeing it, I knew Giacometti. And how can you not enjoy a movie about someone you have met and known personally?
RATING: four out of five stars
...
What a nice review, LL! On your recommendation we watched this unusual film last night. As you say, it's a small movie, but nevertheless packed with talent.

Geoffrey Rush turns in another perfect performance. It didn't hurt that he even LOOKS like Giacometti. And the rest of the cast are first rate; even Armie Hammer, who is not my most favorite actor. The actresses playing his wife and his mistress are delightful, as is Tony Shalhoub, playing Giacometti's brother.

The narrative turns a bit tedious, with scene after scene of the sittings with Rush at the easel. I suspect some license was taken with the truth, as this would be the second telling (Lord's book, then the screenplay by Lord & Tucci). But the artistic process as you have highlighted it shines light on what some artists of all stripes go through. I have been personally privy to the process, and Giacometti's emotional roller coaster is not uncommon.

The cinematography with the coloring by Danny Cohen is remarkable, as is the first rate score by Evan Lurie-- which is memorable.

This is a film that will not be seen by a wide audience, but it shows what a labor of love can produce. This was undoubtedly a small budget film, whose characters were surely happily undertaken by some very talented actors.

Thanks for the tip!

This had the flavor of an exploitation movie but I wonder if that was the intention. It's from a respected and successful director, is a pretty good production, and has a decent cast including James Mason. It was most definitely an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, and there's even a minor character that looks like the one Leonardo DiCaprio played. It's melodramatic, disturbing, and fun, but it's not excessive.

I was blind about it! I had not even heard about it, but when I saw the poster, I was intrigued, I found it beautiful and simple. Luckily it was a great experience (maybe because I wasn't expecting anything?). The film is much more than it appears. With a message we have known since the end of the Vietnam War, but it doesn't matter, it was very well told! Between the lines, behind the obvious , there is much happening. Very well done!

I finally watched this in anticipation of Glass coming out, and this one fell a little flat with me. I enjoyed Split much more. The story itself was commendable, but I thought the actual movie plot points were pretty basic. The tone was very laidback the entire time, even when we finally get around to David using his power for good. It certainly isn't a bad movie, but I'm just very neutral on it.

As somebody who watches a lot of boxing, and martial arts in general, it's nice to see a movie focus on some overlooked elements of the sport. Even the heels of the sport who we banter about with our friends deserve our respect for the pieces of themselves they lose in the process. Refreshingly, the structure of the film eschews training montages and other tropes driven into the ground by the likes of the Rocky franchise. Journeyman is a simple, effective character study bolstered by Anthony Pitts' delicate performance.

The Shining, Home Alone, The Visit, Don't Breath...

Once you lift enough ideas you can synthesize something new I suppose. That tends to be how Netflix goes about things so I'm surprised I didn't find this there. Beyond that, the problem with this particular movie is how long it puts everything off. There's no incremental piecing out of knowledge. It's just waiting for the reveal, and the reveal just isn't that great.

Pet Sematary (1989)

The first 2 acts are hard to beat for atmosphere and creepiness. The 3rd act turns into part incredibly dark, part incredibly dumb. The ending felt rushed and silly with the baby gage one liners. Not a bad movie. Definitely has its moments. Herman Munster is great in this.

Since it already stars Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo, having Hoskins in it would make it a proper Super Mario Bros. reunion.

over the past few weeks, I have been watching films for the B Movie II Hall of Fame.. I said after I watch each film I would rate them overall.. Here is my ratings and comments. I'm removing the mentions as they are in the original post

My thoughts

The Child - recommended by pahaK

First thing I noticed about this film is the lighting. I found it very dark and sometimes hard to see the scenes clearly. The music was annoying. The script wasn't terrible but wasn't good either. I found that the zombies looked more like rejects from "The Creature of the Black Lagoon." The acting was so so. Blood, well very 1970s'ish. The ending where the zombies were after the housekeeper and the guy was very overacted. 2.5/5

The Burning - recommended by cat_sidhe

I found this kind of interesting. It did seem a lot like the Sleep Away Camp horror films. The first thing I noticed as "Mark Rattner" from FTARH (Brian Becker's character). Seeing Jason Alexander and Fisher Stevens when they were young was a bit different too. I found the story just a normal 80's camp horror story - "Let's pick on this guy and then years later, he comes back to kill everyone for revenge". Nothing new here for the 80's generation. The canoe scene was a bit overacted and the fake blood was horrible. 3.5/5

Night of the Creeps - recommended by TheUsualSuspect

Again, kind of interesting. Very similar to most 80's teen romance/comedy/horror. This is one that wouldn't bother me to watch again. It just has that 80's teen vibe to it that I enjoy. The acting was fine. Blood was fine. The aliens at the beginning, I could have done without. The "creeps" kind of reminded me of how Leechwoman is in Puppet Master  . 3.5/5

Hunter's Blood- recommended by Joel

This was interesting as well but not too off of those city folks poking fun at the redneck hill people, who have no problem hunting humans as animals. I have seen a few like this before in my cinema viewing time. The acting wasn't that great and neither was the blood. I guess I'm so used to modern horror blood being close to the real thing. I would probably watch this again. 3/5

The Beastmaster - recommended by MovieGal (myself) :D

Well what can I say? This film has held its own even though its aged. I actually enjoyed it and I haven't seen it in over 20 years. I found it fun but yeah the acting wasn't that great. At times Marc Singer overacted. The animals were still cute. Tanya Roberts was just normal. John Amos was nice to see. And if anyone noticed Billy Jayne aka Billy Jacoby played young Dar. Rip Torn was great as the bad guy. Maybe next time, I won't wait so long to see it! 3.5/5

Cherry2000 - recommended byCitizen Rules

I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I found it has a similar feel to it like Mad Max... probably the futuristic dystopia feeling. Melanie Griffith was entertaining. There was nothing wrong with this film from what I could see. I would probably watch it again. I think Citizen Rules as a thing for love stories in a futuristic setting  3/5

The Editor - recommended by CiCi

Oh man, where do I start? I found this film bad but not as bad as some of the other's here. The blood and guts were cheesy. The acting was overrated. The story was decent but there was just something about it. Not a fav. Probably wouldn't revisit. Sorry Cici! 2.5/5

Space Invaded - recommended by edarsenal

A very cute and fun watch! The little girl was adorable. The aliens were cool. The story was interesting. Yeah I would definitely watch again with friends. 3.5/5

Jack Frost - recommended by HashtagBrownies

A holiday slasher in its own. I didn't think it was great. I have seen some better, even foreign b movie holiday films. The killings were a bit fun and the r*pe scene with Elizabeth Shannon, how crazy! Not sure if I would watch again or not. Don't count that as a bad thing though. 3/5

note to HashtagBrownies - watch the Danish film "Sint". You would enjoy it!

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - recommended by mattiasflgrtll6

For being Killer Tomatoes, rarely anything resembling blood! The movie was very silly. The actors had no problems overacting. It reminded me a bit of "The Kentucky Fried Movie". If you haven't seen that mattiasflgrtll6, you should! They say you should always see "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" at least once and I saw it my once time. 2/5

The Beast Must Die - recommended by Siddon

Sorry Siddon but I didn't like this at all. Love Peter Cushing but found this movie boring. I think I stopped really paying halfway through. I figured out who the wolf was before then. 2/5

The Dragon Lives Again - recommended by TYTD

I actually liked this movie! I watched it last because I figured I wouldn't like it at all. I guess most don't know this about me but I love Martial Art films. I love the old karate films and well what can I say? I did find some characters hilarious like the Asian Popeye and Asian Outlaw Josey Wales - Clint Eastwood. I would watch again with friends. 3/5

And although there is not a whole lot of traditional 'storyline' to the narrative, I found that the depiction of the artist and his creative process was so authentic, I felt I met and knew him through this film.

~Doc

You're welcome! And thanks for your comments, this may be the most rewarding commentary I've received on this forum. Glad you enjoyed the movie. And it makes sense that a musician of your experience and stature would not be a stranger to the challenges of the creative process.

I enjoyed your review as well. Yes the actor looked like the artist, and was so vivid that he all but stepped off the screen. I forgot to mention the score, so I' m glad you did.

As you so aptly put it, the film was ' a labor of love'.I' m happy you wanted to see it b/c of my review; and even more pleased that you appreciated it as much as you - and I -did.

It was better the second time around. I checked out the original DVD from the library a few months back and I didn't realize this until after the fact, but it suffered from disc rot, which causes DVDs to deteriorate. In this case, it caused that disc to skip an important scene in which a few characters discuss the color-coded doors which actually all lead from the same door, including the fact that only Howl knows where the black one leads, and clean through the closing credits. Thankfully, Blu-rays don't suffer disc rot, so there were no interruptions this time and it looks and sounds the best it ever has outside of the theater; can't go wrong with the best home video format that doesn't require a 1300-dollar player. Having found time to read the British children's novel which serves as its source material, I can say this is a really good adaptation of it. Sure, Miyazaki streamlined it considerably; there are subplots and even side characters that don't make the cut, but that's easily attributed to the fact that there's simply no way to fit all of them into a two-hour movie. The author Diana Wynne Jones was well aware of this and gave it her full approval, calling it "a fantastic film." The English dub is also one of the best. Both Mortimer and Simmons are excellent as Sophie; I really like what Disney did here, having Mortimer fade in and out during the latter half until the curse is lifted and it's Mortimer for the rest of the movie. Bale makes for a great Howl; pretty impressive, isn't it, how with Bale here and Michael Keaton as Porco Rosso, Disney got not one, but two of the best Batmen ever to dub a Miyazaki film. Crystal is a whole lot of fun (When isn't he?) as Calcifer, making for a surprisingly endearing fire demon; I read a couple weeks ago where someone commented on another site that he and Bale were out of place in this dub, but... Well, to each his own, huh? There's also a wealth of other live-action stars, all of whom pull it off rather well, and the dub script is completely natural. Later, guys.

The Color of Pomegranates 1969
★★★★ Watched 10 Oct, 2018

Parajanov visualizes the work of a medieval Armenian poet in which he uses symmetries as rhymes and contemporary architecture as touchstones for many of the compositions. The camera seldom moves pinning the subjects to walls or buildings or to spots in fields where they repeat movements or are stirred by wind or stand completely still in what amounts to an an animated painting. He references drawings, writings, and various artisanal processes throughout the film in what amounts to a tribute that goes beyond the scope of a single man to the point of encompassing an entire era of creation defined by its spiritual foundation.

Slice 2 - B-Movie love is here, but not much else. Not as funny or witty or even charming as it should be.

The Vault 1.5 Not scary, not thrilling, low budget ghost-heist film. Yup, ghost-heist. Weird blending of the two genres that could have worked, but doesn't.

Terrifier1.5 A pretty great creepy clown performance can't save this gore for the sake of gore flick.

What did you like in Superman Returns?

It's been years since I watched it for the last time, seven years if my memory is right, I didn't like it, so it's probably at least a cool movie, since I used to like Batman & Robin, yes, that was my vision of Super Hero back in the day.

I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey in 70mm at the Prince Charles cinema in Leicester Square, London.

What an experience. Thoroughly loved experiencing such an iconic film presented in a way it was presented back in 1968 in an old fashioned cinema. I felt like I was transported back in time. As far as the film goes, technologically ahead of its time. Personally, I found it a little indulgent in places and some of the scenes were simply beyond comprehension. However, I think that was Kubrick's intention.

I can't stop thinking about it, so I can't imagine how people in the sixties felt after leaving the cinema.

Sidebar: It was funny watching it for the first time and seeing bits and pieces from other movies that were inspired or influenced by it. Whatever you think of the movie you can't deny the fact it inspired so many great directors.

8/10.

What I remember liking about it was it being an homage to the Christopher Reeve films – for instance Kevin Spacey was a perfect alternative for Gene Hackman; and I loved Parker Posey as the moll :). Kate Bosworth was really disappointing though for me. I thought she was miscast.

I probably shouldn't even post a rating for it since I am seeing this movie for the first time in a completely different era. For what it was though, I liked it. I've never been a Stallone fan, but I like his character here. The movie's forecasting of the future was relatively accurate in some spots and downright laughable in others, but that may have been part of the intent since there are some comedic lines thrown into the movie. If only I had watched it 10+ years ago...I wonder if the most recent Blade Runner will look like this in the actual year 2049?

★★★ Watched 11 Oct, 2018

I'm reminded of a criticism levied against Beasts of the Southern Wild in how it used a child's point of view to romanticize destitution and suffering. Room isn't as unabashedly doe-eyed, but the sequences narrated by the boy come closest to conjuring that cloying, confused sensation. I should be happy it's a movie about a dark experience which manages to carve out little slivers of light, but I'm a little too cynical for perfume to cover up the stench of a corpse.

Still, I deeply admire how Abrahamson structures the story. I hope equal time being dedicated to the healing process is adopted by other creators especially when handling nonfiction material. It strikes me as a healthier way of understanding trauma beyond the point of conception.

Paris Texas
1994

Director: Wim Wenders
Written by Sam Shepard
Rated R
150 minutes
Key actors: Harry Dean Stanton, Dean Stockwell, Natasha Kinski, Aurore Clement, and Hunter Carson

A man(Travis) has stumbled back across the border (of sanity?) in a catatonic state. His brother, Walt, takes Travis in while he recovers from his trauma. Walt and his wife, Anne, have been looking after Travis' son, Hunter, because Travis and his wife, Jane, have been missing. Travis' is able to stay with Walt until he is functional enough to begin looking for his wife. He takes Hunter without telling Walt or his wife, and they make an adventure in looking for Jane. In the end Travis is only able to achieve a partial reunion to his family at great sacrifice to himself.

The film elements are all here. There is solid acting throughout, the direction is good, the cinematography is good; however, the star of this movie is the writer of the story, Sam Shepard. You will look long and hard to find scripts as powerful as this one. There are a pair of scenes in this movie that Roger Ebert has singled out as among the best monologues in film history (I have shared a link to a portion of one of those scenes above.) I have rated this film as a five for the following reasons: The script is fantastic, the acting is good, the direction is good, the emotional impact is a strength in this movie. If you require hooks, gimmicks, swift movement of plot, etc. this movie is not for you. However I believe that as a film directed at those who enjoy steady plot and character development, and can be patient with its length and pace will have a hard time finding movies that can match this film. For that audience I rate this one a five.
