One of Bette's best performances and Barbara Hershey has never been more beautiful onscreen..the first botox-lips ever to appear in a movie and they totally work.

3rd re-watch...this movie just gets better every time I watch it...understand Rami Malek's Oscar more with each re-watch...love the scene where they construct the title tune and "We Will Rock You". Also love the press conference scene near the end of the film.

A very unique watch, albeit the whole thing was way to long with a nearly seven hour running time all in all.

I'm starting to think the real reason Total Recall is one of the best Arnold movies is because it couches the craziness of your typical Arnold movie in its maybe-a-dream framework whereas this one uncritically runs with said craziness, which arguably makes it suffer as a result.

Bohemian Rhapsody (Bryan Singer, 2018)

A bit long in the tooth. I did like the first 1/3rd of the film where we meet a young Freddie Mercury and learn of family origins and of his chance encounter that brought him from airport luggage handler to lead singer of one of the biggest rock bands of all time. But I couldn't help but think that Rami Malek would have made a great Mick Jagger. In fact I kept seeing Mick in the early part of the film and not Freddie. But once the film progressed to where Mercury gets his trademark short hair and mustache look, he seemed more like the real deal.

IMO they overdid the prosthetic choppers. Yeah I know Freddie Mercury had an overbite but the prosthetic teeth looked fake to me and distracted me quite a bit. Even worse I started noticing that the actor had problems wearing them as in some scenes he would roll his upper lip down as if the fake teeth where bugging him. That didn't appear to be part of the acting either, but a naturalistic response by the actor to those huge choppers.

I have to say that I got bored in the middle of the film when it relied more on montage stage performances, than character/story building scenes. That felt like lazy film making. Though the Live Aid scenes that came at the end, did make up for some of the lackluster script...I got to believe the real Freddie Mercury had a BIG story to tell, sadly we only got a glimpse of that story here in what might be described as movie-making-by-the-numbers. rating_3

Simple, sappy, and predictable, and I loved every minute of it. I already liked Ali and Mortensen anyway, so that easily transferred over to these roles. Plenty of laughs and tears. I don't know what Spike Lee's problem was but I'm glad this won the Best Picture Oscar.

The Invitation (2015)

A lot to like in this, but hard to say without spoiling it! The sense of wrongness creeps up slowly, but you're not quite sure whether it's internal or external. The awkwardness of different ways of dealing with grief were effective, and the long shots of corridors and locked doors added to the tension. On the downside, while the main character was well drawn and acted, the supporting characters seemed less so, and while there's certainly supposed to be a layer of awkwardness and weirdness, their interactions never seemed quite natural from the start.

Something I was pondering at the end, though:

Were the people who survived the only ones who didn't take part in the 'I want' game? I'd have to rewatch to check, but I think so. Which would be a nice touch.

Aquaman - 3 - Snooze factor = Zzz
Hell Fest - 2 - Snooze factor = Z

In Aquaman the rooftop chase in the extended trailer was far more exciting than the sequence in the actual film...

[Snooze Factor Ratings]:
Z = didn't nod off at all
Zz = nearly nodded off but managed to stay alert
Zzz = nodded off and missed some of the film but went back to watch what I missed
Zzzz = nodded off and missed some of the film but went back to watch what I missed but nodded off again at the same point and therefore needed to go back a number of times before I got through it...
Zzzzz = nodded off and missed some or the rest of the film but was not interested enough to go back over it

Second viewing, actually perfect role for Tom Cruise and probably closest to how his media profile actually depicts him in real life, he was great. The more I see Phillip Seymour Hoffman the more it’s obvious how much of a loss to the movie world he is. Why couldn’t he have just been the penguin in a batman movie before he snuffed it.

Great and believable story with genius editing that helps the narrative come together smoothly, the surreal sort of ending took it from a 3.5 to a 4 out of 5 it actually fits perfectly, well the movie needed a kind of out there sort of ending I loved it.

Patton (1970)

*From the first paragraph of my senior thesis from winter 2017* While the first assumption may be that Patton had a traditional and now outdated form of military theory, deeper study reveals that he challenged traditional U.S. Army doctrine more than any other Allied general in World War II. While traditional military theory favored military strategy centered around the infantry and battles of attrition, Patton bucked the system and innovated the aggressive use of the tank by favoring maneuver and mobility to create psychological shock in the enemy through continual advance. He also developed modernized logistics in which infantry, tanks, artillery, and tactical air support maintained tight coordination known as combined arms. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and France in 1940, utilizing a similar style of mobility through tank-centric offensive warfare, most Allied generals were bewildered by its rapid success due to their attachment with more traditional infantry-centric warfare based on attrition rather than wide-sweeping maneuver. Of the Allied generals, only Patton was unsurprised by the Germans’ momentous success, as their advancements resembled the progress of his military theory. Patton’s unconventional war theory proved decisive in the Allied advance across France and into Germany from 1944 to 1945. His detailed war theories of shock, combined arms, tank, and command and control will be applied to the campaigns of his Third Army in Normandy, Metz, the German Ardennes counteroffensive known as The Battle of the Bulge, and his brilliant Palatinate Campaign at the end of the war. More traditional Allied Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, and British General Bernard Montgomery were frequently confused by Patton’s success, and they often stood in Patton’s way impeding his advancement as Patton was held out of the Allied D-Day invasion. We can always use a General Patton, and to question that would be to doubt Napoléon Bonaparte, Stonewall Jackson, Carl von Clausewitz, Frederick the Great, Julius Caesar, and all the brilliant captains of war from whom Patton expanded his theory of war.

Tokyo-Ga (1985) by Wim Wenders

My 11th Wim Wenders film, my favorites being his road movies; Alice in the Cities, Kings of the Road and Paris Texas. Tokyo-Ga is a mixture of an ode to Japanese filmmaker Ozu, a travel documentary and an essay film with reflections on filmmaking. A nice venture into a more reflexive cinema by Wenders and highly recommendable if you are into Chris Markers films and maybe some of Godards more digestible essayfilms. My favorite scene being the train scene with the reflexion on Mu (nothing).

All in all a rather obscure film on Tokyo and Ozu, bordering an idiosyncratic sentiment, which might not interest mainstream MoFo's.

Lions Love (1969) by Agnès Varda

My 13th film by Nouvelle Vague director Agnès Varda was a huge disappointment considering her solid filmography. The film was a disjointed depiction of bohemian life in Hollywood, filmed as a sort of pseudo-documentary, with instances of direct talk to the audience and glimpses of Varda's greatness. Not really recommendable outside her fanbase.

The Nun (1966)

I'm only realising how many great films there are about Nuns or Nunneries and this is right up there with them. In fact, its possibly the best I've seen so far and even one of the best movies I've seen in recent times. Originally banned for several years due to its apparent attack on the Catholic church, The Nun stars Anna Karina, who really makes this her own, as the naïve daughter forced into convent life, in such a cruel way.

Amazing film and highly recommended. Must see more from Rivette.

A little underwhelming. Harris Dickinson (Trust) was good. It just seemed a bit sad without much new to say and I really wasn't sure about the bits where his face was blurred (presumably to represent his fractured sense of self).

I do wonder about the future of films depicting modern life, when modern life increasingly involves sitting in front of your computer screen. It's not particularly cinematic.

Very intense drama/thriller. I would name one of my favorites of the genre, among Man on Fire. What makes Sicario different from the rest, is that, Sicario try to show a perspective we the audience believe is the reality of the Mexican cartels, but they complement that perspective with the why & how, and they did it very well. Some of the action scenes are just amazing, all that drove to the border scene is remarkable.

For this second one I was hopping better. They sticked to the structure of trying to show the reality of each sides, but there was nothing intense about Day of the Soldado, I fond it predictable, even so, the director tried to add complexity to the plot. Very unfortunate they added ISIS, I didn't get it. An increase of violence against no one, and in the end everyone lost. The acting saved this film, Josh Brolin was my favorite this time.

Confidentially Yours (1983)

Francois Truffaut's final film that stars Trintignant and the marvellous Fanny Ardant. I read a lot of mixed reviews about this and its true that there are plot holes and characters acting in ways that would never happen but I thought it was a really fun movie. Ardant steals the show here, with a lot of time spent watching her walk! It has a Hitchcock vibe to it, with a bit more humour.

Worth a watch for the walking alone.

Friday 13th V: A new beginning 4/10

The only reason I never gave this a 3 or less was because I feel asleep for about 15 mins during, although you could say that’s more reason to score it lower. Horrible movie, kind of makes me want to give up on watching all the Friday’s. I have to see Jason X though, the one where he’s in space, I might skip to that it’s a brilliantly terrible concept.

Sure it’s a teenage slasher but so was IV and that was excellent. The most annoying thing is the constant search for comedy, the fat kid at the start with chocolate round his mouth got what was coming to him as far as I’m concerned. No character development whatsoever, and the ending was unbelievably annoying too.

Pretty good, if flawed, low-budget indie sci-fi flick. Visuals were cool, plot was interesting with some unexpected turns. Solid acting.
It really sucked me into its world with its dream-like eery atmosphere. I envision a lot of serious sci-fi fans will be left underwhelmed by it but to me there's a certain charm about these sort of movies that puts me under a spell - hard to explain.

Now I know why Jennifer Lynch (the great David’s daughter) never got a crack at the big time again until 2008’s surveillance, a full 15 years.............. It wasn’t as weird a film as I imagined it would be, I was expecting a lot of surrealism, it was just a woman in a chair with no legs. It did pick up towards the end but by then it was far to late, I really must watch decent movie after the last two pieces of dross.

Der Samurai (2014)

A odd German horror fantasy that seems to hint for a twist which never comes (which makes it much weirder actually). A soft and shy police feeds a wolf, then comes the sword wielding transvestite and eventually quite a few bodies. We even get to see an erect penis. It more or less holds together for its short duration.

I might have watched this too late at night, because I found myself drifting off during times. This was very Lord Of The Ringsy in many ways which was fine but it felt much more CGI heavy and got me to thinking what a big budget steampunk movie would be like if using all real sets, props etc because nothing in this movie looked very real and it also could have done with a few more grown ups in it.. best thing was the character of Shrike which felt like Peter Jackson doing his orc thing and that was all good for me.

Genuinely weird offering from Ken Russell. Supposed to be some sort of erotic thriller comedy? In truth its a complete mess! That's not to say that there aren't some good points. Kathleen Turner is very sultry and Anthony Perkins is absolutely manic as the man of god with more than a bible in his bag! Bizarrely, some of the direction reminded me alot of "Querelle" by Fassbinder. Warning: the Rick Wakeman soundtrack will make your ears bleed :):) 2.5

Avengers: Endgame (2019) 3.5

I enjoyed this movie, but there are some problems I had with it. I'm still on the fence about whether I liked this more than Infinity War. I was unfortunately spoiled on a big scene from this film thanks to some asshat on facebook,

Tony Stark snapping his fingers to turn Thanos and his army to dust at the end. Tony definitely channeled Batman in that scene for sure lol

but despite that when I saw the scene in context with the movie it was well done. I was emotional at times in this movie which was a first for me. I've always enjoyed the Marvel movies to an extent but I never felt very invested in it. Looking forward to what Marvel brings next. Although I could of done without the
Girl Power scene when Captain Marvel gets her hands on the gauntlet. Very forced imo and really took me out of the movie. We get it there's a lot of female avengers we already know that they are all capable this scene felt very out of place. Unnecessary. Captain America saying "Avengers Assemble" when the rest of the avengers that were brought back finally arrived was strong enough on its own.

Part of me is very glad I skipped out on Captain Marvel because she was easily the worst part of this movie. Call me what you want the scene was just very unnecessary.

Tokyo Story (1953)

I got inspired to watch this movie after watching people go see that Avengers movie which reminded myself that I have not watched a truly great movie in years and that I should take my time and revisit an old favorite of mine to remember how a great movie really is. So how was revisiting it? Well, I was a bit scared actually, of the possibility that it would not measure up to my past impressions of the movie. However, I was pleasantly surprised to rediscover this movie after watching it for the first time in almost exactly 6 years.

Tokyo Story is the definition of a classic movie. It is about the most fundamental elements of life: family, time and the sad fact that interpersonal connections do not lasy forever. This movie is truly devastating: it expressed the anguish and sadness in a truly unforgettable manner.

The fact that characters do not easily express all their emotions makes the movie feel much more authentic and hence powerful: in real life we never act like movie characters instead we are more reserved like Noriko, one of the most noble characters in the history of film.

The visual style of the movie is also tremendous: the result of decades of work by Ozu in improving his particular style. The movie feels like a piece of minimalistic visual music, purely enjoyable on its audiovisual experience. It is also a good movie to use to learn Japanese since the characters speak very simple sentences. :D

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

I feel less like I watched this movie and more like I was battered in the face with it, especially the final hour. I really wanted this to be the “amazing” “satisfying” epic the critics were calling it. I was so ready to watch that movie. In the end, while it was immersive and emotional and thrilling, I couldn’t exactly call it satisfying.

There’s plenty of fun, some nice nods to different things, moments that had me awestruck and some devastating emotional moments. I spent pretty much the last half an hour with tears in my eyes for a variety of reasons; any film that can have such an emotional effect has to be worth something. It’s an epic feat to pull off something like this, the culmination of so many other movies, with so many different characters and they almost, almost pull it off.

There were things about it that really, really bothered me though and I'm not sure how much the bad outweighs the good in terms of the rating. For now, I'll go with a tentative 3.5

I saw a chunk of it recently (never seen the whole film) and I noted that Lynn Collins' experience with Shakespeare would have come in very handy for the dialogue. I found that Mark Strong stuck out like a sore thumb – great as he always is – as did Dominic West, so it was difficult to see them as the characters they were playing unfortunately. Weirdly I didn't find James Purefoy as jarring; maybe he was more relaxed :).

I like early science fiction a lot so I was very surprised to find out that Edgar Rice Burroughs had written some, along with his more famous Tarzan (pretty sure I knew that before this film was made).

There's been a number of sci-fis made from Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels. Most notable At the Earth's Core (1976) and The Land That Time Forgot (1975) and remade in (2009). There was also a Princess of Mars (2009) another John Carter type movie, with the adult movie actress Traci Lords, (but no porn in it:p). I watched a bit of that one but shut it off as it bored me.

On one hand, the premise was very interesting (existential mystery sci-fi type films are just generally my thing), and it started off quite nicely with a compelling mystery that really got under my skin. On the other, as is often the case with mystery flicks, the further the story unraveled, the more the mystery lost its creepy edge - as a result, the ending was disappointing, in part because I hoped it would go somewhere more profound. There were some really well done, creepy scenes, but there were also others that didn't work nearly as well. Still, while certainly a hit and miss viewing experience, I thought the pros outweighed the cons in this case. Some reviewers have said it was difficult to watch - I personally didn't feel that way. I also liked that the "loop" concept in the film played out in a way that could be interpreted both on the literal and metaphorical level - that definitely added another dimension to the story, although I have to admit the metaphorical aspect was laid out a bit too bluntly for my taste.

Overall, a thumbs up.

Trying to catch up on some of the Horror countdown I haven't seen and this is one of the "classics" that I never bothered with. I liked it a lot. It's creepy with good performances the only problem was that I knew most of the big stuff (twists, certain scenes) because it's a fairly popular 40 year old horror movie that has been referenced hundreds of times.

Not as good as many of the other Epics of the era. The way these films look has always been eye candy for me and this is no different. Looks great but some of the acting is a bit too wooden. Also, I'm not sure if I liked Yul Brynner as Pharaoh. Yul is great but every time he said "My Fadda (father)" I had a bit of a chuckle. Anne Baxter was good and looked fantastic. Charlton was Charlton, the John Wayne of biblical films.

Never seen the original. Watched it one time & had to read quite a bit to find out what the heck was going on. Sat down & watched it again. Dakota Johnson (who I did not recognize) is new to me as an actor. Thought she was very good. Tilda Swinton amazing in her 3 roles, 2 of which I did not know were her. Mia Goth I already like & it was good to see many older actresses who aren’t seen often these days (Angela Winkler, e.g.).

Didn’t understand about a 1/4 of the movie, but I enjoyed it.

I saw this many times as a kid, usually on TV with commercials and heavy editing. I had subtitles and understood the drunken Miyagi.. He's told "Sgt. Miyagi, kill as many Jerry Germans as you can".. later he's told his wife and child die from complication, "and no doctor came"... Then in disgust, Miyagi says "Home of the brave, land of the free, but no doctor came" (Japanese internment camps)..

Rewatch. Added half a star because it held up well and I really appreciate all the parts where the characters don't talk to each other, even if I still had to watch through my fingers at certain points. (Also, quiet, gay, British farming film with lots of scenery is pretty much the antithesis of Avengers: Endgame, so it was a good movie palate cleanser.)

They Live (1988)

I don't know. A bad movie but maybe a good bad movie? I liked how he sees things through the glasses. And that for like ten minutes of the film it's just a guy with a mullet and his friend beating the crap out of each other. (Not sure it's really horror though.)

Victoria (2015)

https://curzonblob.blob.core.windows.net/media/4907/victoria-02.jpg

I guess this film's claim to fame is that it's shot in one continuous take, something I didn't know when I added it to my Netflix queue. That's kind of cool but I also think kind of gimmicky, and I believe the movie suffered from it. For me it creates two issues that are practically opposite of one another. First is that we don't get a tight film because we have to see everything no matter how trivial an action might be. At the same time, the movie is rushed through. It doesn't feel like it's rushed as you watch it, but when you think about what's happened so far after an hour or 90 minutes, you realize not enough time went by for all of that to happen. Not feeling that in real time is actually a neat trick by the director. Overall I really enjoyed the high energy and occasional intensity, but the stupidity of the characters eventually started to wear on me. Worth watching.

This is a grimy and ugly movie starring the grimy and ugly Warren Oates. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. After watching Schindler's List, this didn't even feel like a legitimate movie at only 80 empty minutes.

I can say with full confidence that if your passion in life and the way you make your money is through cockfighting, you're probably a loser.

This movie was the biggest challenge to my smoking cessation program. For whatever reason, it drives me bananas when a movie character won't or can't talk, and it doesn't matter why. I just get very anxious, and the Warren Oates character won't talk for the dumbest reason.

I don't know why this movie appealed to me because it was mostly crap.

What a great film. A real tense tale of how young German prisoners of war are made to clear Danish beaches of German mines. The young cast are very impressive here, especially given that they had apparently had very little acting experience. Snowpiercer (2013)

It's quirky with great colours and lighting, at least half an hour too long, tonally really weird with splashes of nasty violence - it must be a Bong Joon-ho movie!

I'd been wanting to watch this for ages but it's not available on dvd, so I was excited to see it pop up on Netflix.

I really liked this to start off with. I didn't mind that it didn't make realistic sense, it was never going to be that kind of movie. It seemed like it was setting out to be Brazil on a train, a kind of dystopian satire or allegory (Is John Hurt's character name a coincidence?). But the stop start pacing and the aforementioned tonal weirdness really weighed it down, and the last half hour was a bit of a mess. I was wondering why the film was lacking in rounded characters or relationships and then I realised they were mostly just there as cannon fodder. I'm not sure Tilda Swinton and Chris Evans were actually acting in the same movie (although John Hurt was spot on).

(I really could have lived without hearing about the thing Curtis hates about himself as well.)

Pretty impressive and disturbing slice of teenage life from Larry Clark (think most of the script was Harmony Korine). Disparate tales of youthful dissatisfaction which can either resound or, as I felt sometimes, were full of posturing. The acting is amatuer-ish (understandable) but that doesn't hurt the overall feel of the film. It's well put together and shocking in the way it portrays the louche against the innocent or damaged.

It's no secret that Miyazaki is making his next film, but even if this had been Ghibli's final hurrah, we couldn't ask for a more uplifting, poignant, emotionally satisfying, or altogether rewarding swan song. And hey, if I had to pick, it's my favorite Ghibli film Miyazaki didn't direct. Moreover, considering I enjoyed both of Yonebayashi's other films, I'd love to see what he does next. Maybe I should tackle this one, too, while I'm at it. Not for nothing but I've seen it enough times and found the time to read Joan G. Robinson's novel, so maybe I could pull it off.

Hosoda sure as hell knows how to make a good movie, huh? Between this, Mirai, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Wolf Children, it seems he has yet to disappoint me. I guess now it all depends on how The Boy and the Beast turns out. As for this one, if you want my honest opinion, it does everything right in terms of story, animation, musical scoring, and voice acting (not to mention the dub script is completely natural). Michael Sinterniklaas is excellent as Kenji, the math genius who's in way over his head. The same can be said for Brina Palencia as Natsuki in quite the departure from her seemingly emotionless turn as Rei Ayanami (it's the way that character is written). Gendo Ikari himself John Swasey is gruff but likable as Mansuke, who often tells stories about the Feudal era. Kyoya Otori himself J. Michael Tatum is perfect as uncle Wabisuke who is treated as an outsider by the rest of the family. The humor and drama work equally well here and it kept me engaged throughout. Hosoda does it again and I can see myself coming back to this one many more times in the future.

Watching more Bunuel these days and really enjoying his films. This one is up there with my favourite, the top spot going to Belle De Jour, which is unlikely to be overtaken. Bunuel films are very distinctive and the style here is like most of his other films, although its not quite as surreal as the others. Again he portrays the bourgeoisie, this time brilliantly narrated, on a train in flashbacks scenes. This one will stick out however, with the fact that two different actresses are playing the same part, yet both have two completely separate personalities. All of this, with a background of ongoing terrorism in the streets!

I never know how crazy these S. Korean movies are going to get. This has it's quirks but is pretty much just a good thriller. Good story and acting, shot well and all that fine stuff.

I just had an intriguing feeling going into the movie that it would be a great movie from Seth Rogen and not your typical stoner film. And it really was, from the likely improvised gag reel punchlines, to a legitimately good love story. There were a few moments where the political tone conflicted with the comedy elements and took me out of it, but this was an excellent movie overall.

Great film, and I didn't realize how much it was like a soft reboot, given the assumption that nobody would have seen the first film. Hence calling it The Road Warrior.

Dragged Across Concrete (2018)

I thought there had been a review of this film here, but couldn't find it. With a title like it has, I wanted to check IMDB to alert me whether or not it was a gore-fest Tarantino type film. I was surprised that most of the pro reviews were less than flattering, so while watching, it was rewarding to learn within the first 15 minutes that the film seemed very well done, unique, and with great atmosphere.

In addition to the feel of the story, the thing that pleased me right away was it's insistence on non-PC, especially concerning race. As a picture rooted in the "buddy cop" format, it managed to create new ground, and feature refreshing and off beat dialogue.

Several have pointed out what they perceive as slowness in action within the story. But to me the spacing was very appropriate, which inclined itself to tension building.

Vince Vaughn turned in one of the finest performances I've seen of his. Those who complained of his role in the second season of True Detective will be surprised and very impressed with him here. Mel Gibson played it straight dramatically with very little joking, and no trace of his cutesy affability of prior roles. Tory Kittles did a swell job as an ex-con, without lapsing into triteness.

The entire cast was near flawless. Special note goes to Jennifer Carpenter who brought off a difficult and thankless part. Laurie Holden was near perfect as Gibson's disabled wife. I didn't recognize her from her good work in The Americans series.

I've skipped director/writer S. Craig Zahler's prior films, Bone Tomahawk, and Brawl in Cell Block 99 because I don't like excessive violence and gore. But if his work is going to be of the Calibre of "Dragged" then his future work is definitely worth some serious attention. To be sure there was violence and blood in this film, but it didn't seem overly excessive, and seemed to fit the action.

It is surprising that this film has not gotten more attention. Reportedly Lionsgate wanted 30 minutes cut from the film to make it more "audience friendly", but Zahler had final cut, and refused to comply. Therefore the distributor put it out only in limited release and to video. Pretty stupid, but that's the way they played it.

This isn't the Netflix version but rather one from Norway which I believe is supposed to be better. One camera is used and it's one take besides the opening minute and set in real time. This helps with realism, but like other movies that use these techniques, I find there's some stagnancy. It's a terrible tragedy that happened and the movie can be appropriately chilling. I feel a true documentary is the best option for the story but this was worth watching.

Rootwood (Marcus Walz, 2018): A Blair Witch-esque film about two podcast hosts and their friend going out into the titular forest after being hired by a Hollywood producer to do a documentary on a creature called The Wooden Devil. Starts out a bit slow, but the tension does build up, but its the last 10 minutes that brings a sense of shock value.

oney (Park Noo-Ri, 2019): This film could be seen in a triple feature with Wall Street and Boiler Room. Similar theme: young stockbroker finds his way on the high road by potentially illegal means. However, here, the man who hires him, known as simply "The Ticket" is quite sinister and goes to great lengths to keep his investments intact. Yoo Ji-Tae, the villain of "Oldboy" is once again great.

The Merry Gentleman (2008)

Despite a confounding title, Michael Keaton's first directing effort is a very nicely done film, with good cinematography, atmosphere and pacing.

Keaton stars as a hitman who works as a tailor, and who also romances suicide. He arranges a meeting with a shy office worker (Kelly MacDonald) who has seen him at a distance following a hit, and a unique relationship develops from there. Kelly is at her best "oh gosh" shy, but spunky self. Bobby Cannavale plays her abusive ex-husband to great effect. And Tom Bastounes does a nice job as an intuitive detective.

It's perplexing why this film got an "R" rating, as there really is no rough language, and the minimal violence is very tame by modern standards. The ending is not my favorite type, but it is gratifying.

"Gentleman" is one of those small films that can be missed, but is a very watchable and impressive picture. Available for free on Amazon and other streaming sources.

COMPLETELY STUNNING.

I had to check I'd put the right film on, such was the perfectly transferred digital images of the archive footage. It looks and sounds perfect. It just lays out events of 7 days in 1969 and lets us absorb them. No interviews, no talking heads, no voice-over, no opinions, no scientists, no modern day thoughts, no re-enactments.

Just the events, unfolding before us.

Some of the manoeuvres that Apollo 11, Columbia and Eagle did were simply breathtaking. The humour that the 3 astronauts displayed was great to watch.

One of the greatest documentaries I've ever seen.

I really wanted to like it but it seemed more a rough draft for the screwball comedies that followed. The wealthy characters are very one-dimensional and William Powell never seems remotely interested in Carol Lombard though based on her character, I can't blame him. I am curious about the David Niven version, though.

Rampage 2: Capital Punishment is false advertising going by the poster/blu-ray cover, I was expecting the main character to go on a shooting spree around Washington D.C killing politicians and so on but most of the film took place in two rooms in a television studio and I'm also puzzled as the first film ended in a way that this second film doesn't make sense unless I missed something...

The film Ecoute Le Temps really annoyed me, I don't know if it was 'on purpose' due to the films content but then it's still stupid, I don't know how many times I saw the boom mic! I stopped counting around the 30+ mark, throughout this film you could see the boom clearly, even moving from actor to actor, and also in two places you could see the front roof edge of the camera. That's too many easy mistakes for my liking, don't care how low budget you are...

[Snooze Factor Ratings]:
Z = didn't nod off at all
Zz = nearly nodded off but managed to stay alert
Zzz = nodded off and missed some of the film but went back to watch what I missed
Zzzz = nodded off and missed some of the film but went back to watch what I missed but nodded off again at the same point and therefore needed to go back a number of times before I got through it...
Zzzzz = nodded off and missed some or the rest of the film but was not interested enough to go back over it

I absolutely LOVE this movie...hasn't aged a bit in 40 years...I loved Arthur, but I think this is Dudley Moore's best performance...utterly charming and layered and featuring some physical comedy that would put Jerry Lewis to shame...Blake Edwards' screenplay is sophisticated and witty and, I don't know why, but that scene at the bar in Mexico where Dudley plays the piano always makes me cry.

Redcon-1: A zombie outbreak has plagued the UK and a group of SAS officers and U.S. Army Special Forces are assigned to find a scientist among the survivors who may have the cure for the outbreak in the quarantined zone with 72 hours before the zone gets decimated. Unlike the zombies many are used to, these zombies can attack and fight. Good gore and when it calls for it, nice action and martial arts fights. The only gripe, it was a bit too long. There was some unnecessary filler involving survivors resorting to their own militaristic tactics to fight the zombies.

This summer, starting 11 of July, Teatro Campo Alegre in Porto, Portugal will show every Buñuel movie, won't miss one. I've only saw Belle de jour and Los olvidados.

Sounds brilliant Joao! Interested to hear how that goes. He's so many great films.

Went for films on Ireland and the troubles. If you have any interest then I recommend these. Even if not watching, you should read up a bit about them all and the events that occurred.

No Stone Unturned (2017) - 3
I, Dolours (2018) - 3
The Miami Showband Massacre (2019) - 2.5
Black 47 (2018) - 3

It's a movie where Connery tells Snipes to call him "senpai". If anything, I might be underrating it.

Yes it is a French film and there is French, English and Flemish and you need subtitles but it's not really wordy and very easy to follow, in fact Van Damme hardly ever speaks!

Really good to know, thanks a lot

I'll give it a watch

Invasion of the body snatchers (1978)
7/10.
Still scratching my head over the dog with the human head. Funny though.

Somebody should do a parody called "Invasion of the doobie smokers" and have the invaders carrying around pot plants. Instead of the invaders squealing, they blow smoke, giggle and then cough.

The War Zone (1999)

First feelings after watching:
1. That was one of the most disturbing and saddest films I've seen in years, I need a bath after that.
2. That was one of the most beautiful and naturalistic films I've seen in years, I'm going to watch this again.

So I didn't watch it again but I will soon. This has to be one of the most underrated and under watched films I can currently think of, which may not mean much as Its all I can think about. Tim Roth directs Tilda Swinton and Ray Winston who are both excellent, especially the latter who gets more screen time but its the characters kids who get the acclaim in Lara Belmont and Freddie Cunliffe. Both give performances which make this film so watchable despite being so harrowing and pessimistic.

Not bad for a debut Mr Roth.

Planet of the Vampires (1965)

Bava's old school scifi horror B-movie that's pretty much a mix of Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. It's mostly known for having some similarities to Alien but I think the connection is blown out of proportion. While it has some silly charm to it it's not my kind of scifi (nor Bava). Maybe Citizen Rules would enjoy this

What Happened to Monday (2017)

A dystopian scifi about overpopulation and extreme one child policy. While the premise is somewhat relevant and realistic the actual worldbuilding is laughably bad. Noomi Rapace is poor man's Tatiana Maslany. For some reason I still didn't hate it.

What Men Want (2019)
2
I had a feeling the trailer would have most of the funny parts, and that was the case. There are many scenes where the jokes fell flat with me, and my wife thought the same. The concept was appealing, but they took too many cheap, stupid, shallow routes instead of making it a more intelligent movie.

Rabid Dogs (1974)

A crime thriller about robbers who, during their escape after a robbery, kidnap a woman and a man with sick child. Most of the film happens in a car and it's quite different from other Bavas' I've seen. It's bleak nihilistic tone resembles film like Cut-throats Nine and The Last House on the Left. Acting is little so-so but otherwise it's quite OK.
