Raising Arizona (1987)
Funny, memorable comedy with great acting performances and a classic, Coenesque, twisted plot. It also has one very memorable side character:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9IajUr-OtN0/TfeFfGMym-I/AAAAAAAAAys/CVmHAf80qgQ/s1600/Raising-Arizona-Leonard-Smalls-Randall-Tex-Cobb.png
http://suckerpunchcinema.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/leonard_smalls_raising_arizona.jpg
It may not be the most sophisticated Coen film, but it's very clear why it has remained a classic.
Another Woman (1988)
Wauw. This is a forgotten Allen GEM.
It's about a female writer who is in her 50s and hires a room where she can write quietly. Through a grid in the room, she can hear what is said in a psychiatrist's consulting room next door. She becomes obsessed with a pregnant woman, named Hope, who evaluates her life when talking to the psychiatrist and instigates the female writer to look at her past life so far, herself. She starts to have doubts about decisions she made and begins to realize that she is actually not happy at all.
Haunted by her past, she starts looking for something more...
Woody shows off his genius with a fantastic script, some very well made scenes and the choice of very nostalgic music to go with them.
This film is an intense and melancholic experience. I'm very glad I saw this and I recommend it to everybody who's interested in watching this kind of movies.

Very overrated. People say it's great, I personally think it isn't even good. According to IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes this is a thriller/mystery and suspense film. What exactly makes this a thriller, and where was the suspense? For me, The Third Man is nothing more than a black and white film, with a soundtrack that doesn't even suit the film or its "dark and mysterious atmosphere".

This movie score is by the way one of my favorites of all time and I think it fits the movie perfectly. It even improves the film.
It seems I'm in the minority then. The Third Man disappointed me because I think it could've been a lot better in many ways. One of the very few things I liked about the film was Orson Welles's performance. I think I might give it another go one day, but not this year, and not even the next, because there are thousands of other films in my watchlist and I'm not going to rewatch a film I didn't enjoy.
As for the score, I'll be honest, I think it is one of the worst uses of music that I've seen in film. I didn't mind it during the opening credits, but the very same music was playing in the funeral scene too. And then even in the scenes when Holly Martin chases Harry Lime if I can recall correctly. It just didn't work for me, it just seemed so out of place and it ruined the mysterious atmosphere the movie was trying to create. I liked the first 40 minutes or so, but then I started to dislike it. It started to look like the actors themselves knew they were in a movie, and the situations didn't seem as genuine as they did in the first hour of the movie.
Orson Welles doesn't even turn up until after 40 minutes in. I love the score, but what knd of a movie do you think the zither fits?

I was so sure that I was going to like this movie, but by the time that the credits were rolling, all I could think about was how much of an utter-mess that the story was. Christian Bale delivered a tremendous performance though, I thought, but he couldn't save the movie from its own framework.

I think this is a great movie, I like the mystery about the film as well as the controversialism about the church and so forth. Ron Howard does a great job of directing, Tom Hanks is solid lead. I didnt really believe Ewan Macgregor however just because it seems he didnt fit as the camerlengo, he did a good job acting wise but I think he was miscast. All and all great film and enough things going on to make you watch over a few times.
4/5 - also I am not sure how to put in the popcorn ratings if anyone knows how please let me know.

Very good, but not the masterpiece some say it is. Characterizations aren't deep and the plot is too simplistic, the villain is a carboard character that suits the cartoon stereotype in the US. The movie also lacks in it's pacing, being too fast paced to breathe properly, as result it feels rushed and artificial. Still very good, but not a masterpiece by any measure.
Brad Bird's films became better later on, with Ratatoille, his best, reaching 4_5.

Holy mother of GOD! The first time I watched Tokyo Story I had rated it 4_5, because I was unable to fully master it (partly thanks to the reason that people in the house started to make noise during the middle of the movie at the time but also because it was my first Ozu and so I wasn't adapted to his style), now, I fully got it and it is easily one of the greatest movies ever made. I cried several times. It is on par with Ikiru and Grave of the Fireflies in the tearjerker category.
This is a first rate cinematic masterpiece that pierces the human soul. My top 10 got a new entry, no, top 5!

Have to agree partly with BlueLion on The Third Man. I liked the movie very much but the zither music almost drove me to distraction. Oh well, it wasn't enough to make me dislike the movie and Welles' first appearance in the film is a classic scene and it's just him smiling somewhat, but it's all about time and place in this instance.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, for the 2nd time, this time at home on Blu-Ray. I enjoyed it so much better than at the theater in 3-D...my eyes just can't take 3 hours of 3-D! But I had more time to pick up on various things instead of being wowed at all the effects, etc. And I wasn't as annoyed by Sylvester McCoy as Radagast as I was the first time.
4 I still prefer the "on a scale of one-to-ten" meter but I thought I'd give the popcorn a try just for fun. :)

I'm still not sure what to think of this one. I'm a fan of Alexander Payne's films, and I think he generally does a good job of capturing middle-aged malaise. I'm not sure if this is less relate-able because the main character is immensely rich, but despite the strong acting performances and well-written, emotionally-raw scenes, I had a hard time feeling connected to the characters and the story. It might be because I find it hard to buy George Clooney as the character he plays, instead of George Clooney acting.
On the other hand, probably Matthew Lillard's best film!

Often called one of Kurosawa's best and it is very easy to see why. The story of a warn down bureaucrat trying to find meaning in the last few years of his life. He tries many different ways, but ultimately succeeds in trying to get a park built. I love the way the movie depicts bureaucracy as soul crushing and a waste of time for those who just want a problem fixed. Passed from one desk to another where no one wants to help you out. I also found the end to be very moving when the members of city hall are at Watanabe's wake. Easily the best part of the movie. An excellent film from a brilliant director.

Rosemary's Baby-6/10
I honestly do not see the horror in this. The only time I was truly in suspense was the last 10 minutes of the film, only to be let down. Granted, it is half a century old almost, I just wasn't that impressed. I would be up for another viewing, though. Maybe it is just me, but if I were her in that climactic situation, things would have went differently. Did like the performances, though, especially the older neighbors.

Interesting storyline, but very poorly made movie. Crummy special effects, terrible dialogue. If they had put some money and talent into this thing, it would have been a great show.

One of the few Scorsese movies I had left to see. A movie that was very pretty to watch and shot very well, but I am not a fan of high society period pieces. And not even Daniel Day Lewis could help make me like this more. I can't say it is a bad movie, but I do not care for it. Still it was better than New York New York.

Manhattan - 1979 - Woody Allen - 3.5/5
Good movie, great shots of New York. If it weren't for the weird relationship with Woody Allen and Mariel Hemmingway, it may have scored higher on my list. The weirdness of it though, did not ruin the movie for me. Usually I am not a big Woody Allen fan, I didn't really enjoy Annie Hall while I thought it was funny. But Manhattan was a good movie which kept me interested, kept the plot going (albeit up and down), and I thought Diane Keaton was fantastic in this movie. The idea of taking a date to an art showing/museum is a good way to judge a person and their compatability with you.

It's pretty okay despite its ridiculous portrayal of high school communications. It's like it was conceptualized by people who never went to high school and only saw it in Hollywood films. I wonder how accurately it represents the book's fictional school. Naturally, everything is blown way out of proportion and the only individuals in the entire school are the ones the movie's about. To me this movie seems like a carbon copy of Happy Gilmore crossed with the Warrior (only the fighting really) with characters playing similar roles. Kevin James was Adam Sandler, he had a female love interest, a mentor like Chubbs and an old person he needed to help. They only thing that wasnt really defined was the shooter mcgavin role as the antagonist. There were a couple of laughs to be had but all in all wasnt really all that good.

Just watched In the Name of the Father for the first time since I saw it upon its release 20 years ago.
Very powerful, moving film about the Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven. The film focuses most closely on Gerry Conlon, excellently played by Daniel Day-Lewis (as always).
For those who haven't watched the movie and who are not familiar with the case, I won't say more about it so as not to spoil anything.
The movie is well-directed by Jim Sheridan, who had a cast of wonderful actors, including Lewis, Emma Thompson and Pete Postlethwaite. It has a great soundtrack - including its original title song by Bono. And it moves along at a good pace, but a couple of times it feels a little choppy - due to the problems of covering the important details of a story that takes place over a long period of time.
Overall it's an excellent film that is likely to make your nostrils flare.

http://ombactionmovies.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/kundun.jpg
Kundun was the last Martin Scorsese feature film I had left to see from his filmography (I am not counting his documentaries and short films). I admit that I prefer Martin Scorsese's works that tend to focus on the themes of machismo, urban crime and grit, and the like. I especially love his works with De Niro. Hence why Taxi Driver is my favorite movie, and I love The Departed, Cape Fear, Casino and Goodfellas. So when I get a movie of his that does not fit those particular themes and I enjoy it it really stands out to me. Hence why some of his other lesser acclaimed works like The King of Comedy, Bring out the Dead, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and After Hours all have a special place in my heart. And now I add one more. Kundun is the story of the life of the 14th Dali Lama. It shows his life from childhood, to a teenager, to a young man who assumes his role as the reincarnated Buddha. It is a touching tale of this young boy as he becomes a the most famous monk in the world, and it ends with his struggle against the Communist Chinese which leads to his inevitable self imposed exile. Scorsese presented my with a beautifully shot and set world I never knew, presented me with a culture that is not my own about a religious figure from a faith that is not my own, and made a damn good movie about it where I cared about the outcome. This is defiantly a movie that needs to be seen and talked about more often then it does.

The sequel to the Kurosawa's first movie. It leaves off from the last movie where Sanshiro is must now deal with the brothers of the villain from the last movie. But instead of judo vs juijitsu it is judo vs karate. He also competes against an American boxer. It continues to show Sugata's growth from once reckless brawler to a more disciplined warrior, but he still has things to learn. And in my opinion it is a little better then the first one.

Conviction - Kind of boring at times, and the fact that it was based on a true story took most of the excitement out of it, but some great performances, and a touching ending helped it a lot. 3
JFK - It really could've just been a documentary and it would've been better, but it is still a truly fascinating mystery. It would've been much higher, but you didn't get to know the characters until the middle, so up to that point I just wasn't emotionally invested, so the plot automatically seemed less interesting. It definitely made up for it in the end, though. Better than Conviction, but still 3

The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail
This was Kurosawa's fourth movie and the movie that was his first movie set in the feudal era. It is the story of Lord Yoshitsune and his group of samurai entourage are on the run and must pass through a boarder post undetected. Aided by a hilarious and very well acted Porter, the story blends cinema with the traditions of kabuki theater and Noh musical drama. And as of right now it is my favorite of Kurosawa's earliest works.

I've been on a steady diet of Studio Ghibli movies recently and I'm going to rate the ones I've watched so far:
1. Spirited Away 8/10, My introduction to the studio and I was mesmerised from the beginning. Animation and story telling rarely gets better
2. Princess Mononoke 8/10, I was pleasantly surprised by the violence shown in this, especially considering it's a PG. Far more risky than any Hollywood animation and more heartfelt too.
3. Porco Rosso 7/10, Is Porco the coolest, most badass animated character ever? Not quite as captivating as the other 2 but a very good movie which clearly shows Miyazaki's love for flying (a theme seen in many other Ghibli movies).
4. Arrietty 7/10, One of the most heartfelt coming of age tales I've ever seen, it's beautifully animated with some absolutely unforgettable scenes. A must watch for anyone who wants to experience Japanese animation.
5. Howl's Moving Castle 7/10, Studio Ghibli is great at giving us tales about young teens who are entering into the adult world and Sophie's journey with Howl and his moving castle is one of the best.
6. Kiki's Delivery Service 6/10, The first movie that has really let me down, clunky dialogue and a story that doesn't hit it's stride until the last 20 minutes, this was extremely disappointing.

Monsters inc better than Citizen Kane and Spirited Away? Heresy. Well, I rated Wallace & Gromit in the Wrong Trousers higher than Bresson and Godard, my own heresy.
to be honest i tend not to dwell too much on ratings, some films contain more sentimental value than others, some films need to be watched more times than others, prime example Monsters inc being higher than Citizen Kane. Although saying that, i just didnt fall in love with CK.
Also when my daughter loves something as much as she loves Monsters Inc? How can i not too?;)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull -
Last night, I lost my faith in Indiana Jones.
It broke my heart. It really did. But I couldn't blame Indy. I can't blame the character; it wasn't his fault. He didn't choose this adventure, and he certainly didn't write the tale. So it's not him.
I'm not sure who to blame.
Whilst watching Crystal Skull I felt like a little girl who was watching her childhood hero thrown into situations and saying phrases that weren't characteristic of him. I felt like that character had gotten lost over the last 24 years.
I felt betrayed - hurt. I felt like a heel for not liking the movie, and I felt like a fool for wishing it had been what it was not, but...
I'm of the frame of mind where Indiana Jones and aliens do not mix. This movie felt like such a mixture of Spielberg and Lucas movies to me that I really forgot what I was watching for a long time. War of the Worlds? Star Wars? (Who's idea was it to put the "I've got a bad feeling about this" line in there? - I loved it, but geez. lol) American Graffiti? A.I.? THX-1138?
Yes, I understand it followed the Sci-Fi movies of the 1950s, basically playing into the era and feeding us all a little piece of entertainment history. But it...was annoying.
To me, Indiana never met the flying saucers and little green men from Mars.
Forever - to me - he rode off into the sunset with Henry Jones Sr., Marcus Brody and Sallah.
Ride, boldly ride. And not to the land they call El Dorado.

Wow it was awful, this is some of the worst acting i've seen.
The plot was actually closer to the book than the more recent hollywood version, but that counts for nothing when it was all so poorly acted.

I call each holiday its own name too when I know what somebody celebrates, but even students can say they're off for the holidays or winter break. It's not fair if I have to call the end of December a mouthful of different terms every time I mention it. :)
Miss Vicky
04-13-13, 08:33 PM
Americans in general call each specific holiday by its own name, but when someone is unsure what another person celebrates, they generally just say "have a happy holiday" and when speaking of the winter events collectively it's much simpler to just say "happy holidays" than to list each individual day.
Then again, Americans go "on vacation" while others go "on holiday."

I seem to remember that quite a few years ago it was more common to hear Americans say Merry Christmas - regardless of who they were talking to.
Then, with the rise of identity politics, political correctness, etc, Happy Holidays began to be used more.
I happen to like the one-size-fits-all Happy Holidays greeting.

For me it depends, if I'm at work I'll say "Happy Holidays" unless the other person says "Merry Christmas" first. With my friends and family, I say "Merry Christmas," but all of them celebrate Christmas including my fellow atheists.
But I do like "happy holidays" because it also encompasses New Year's Eve/New Year's Day, which is something pretty much everybody celebrates regardless of religion.

I've been on a steady diet of Studio Ghibli movies recently and I'm going to rate the ones I've watched so far:
Great. My advertising is beginning to get results. :)
It's a PG-13 actually. Though, if the same things were done on live action (decapitations, tons of blood, etc) I guess that it might have been rated R.
3. Porco Rosso 7/10, Is Porco the coolest, most badass animated character ever?
Among my favorites too. :)
4. Arrietty 7/10, One of the most heartfelt coming of age tales I've ever seen, it's beautifully animated with some absolutely unforgettable scenes. A must watch for anyone who wants to experience Japanese animation.
I didn't think that one is that essential. It's less complex than Miyazaki's and Takahata's films and I felt it was a below their level. Still significantly better than the average blockbuster movie.
5. Howl's Moving Castle 7/10, Studio Ghibli is great at giving us tales about young teens who are entering into the adult world and Sophie's journey with Howl and his moving castle is one of the best.
Sophie is actually 18 in the movie, I interpret that as young adult. Though anime characters usually may look younger than they are supposed to be.
6. Kiki's Delivery Service 6/10, The first movie that has really let me down, clunky dialogue and a story that doesn't hit it's stride until the last 20 minutes, this was extremely disappointing.
Did you watch these movies dubbed? Because Kiki's dubbed scrip is much weaker than the original version (transliterated in the subtitles). Disney usually butchers the script of Ghibli films because they seek to adapt the film to "western audiences".
I wouldn't include the dubbed versions of any Ghibli movies into my favorites: these Disney dubs generally hurt the movie severely.
I would recommend watching all Ghibli films in the original language, they are much better that way because the original voice acting is much better combined with better script.

yeah, that whole opening scene was the best!
Finally watched the general.
The train chases were really great writing, I enjoyed them a lot. Combined the two must have been at least half an hour long of train chasing, and the whole thing was intense.
They did a great job with creating a sense of urgency and danger in several different places. Overall I give it a 4/5, I really liked it. The movie as a whole just took a little long to get going, and by the end it was absolutely ridiculous.
Belle De Jour
More than a eroticism film. The film explores the desires of a person that clashes with the simple mundane life and the limits that society implements on you. Here is a woman who endeavored to chase her odd and personal sexual desires, but the clash between life and desire comes inexorably to crash down upon her. A great product of french cinema. Belle De Jour gets a 8/10.

The Extra Man - 2.5/5
Kevin Kline is the only really great part of the movie, Paul Dano is pretty good and the over all basics of the movie are good. Everything else is BOOOORIIIIIIING. I like his mental narrative, and many of the background aspects show creativity and have some humor. But the plot goes nowhere, and is not interesting enough or well directed enough to keep interest without a good story. Even Kevin Kline's character gets redundant, though he plays it so well and made me laugh (at first). Paul Dano's character is interesting and he plays it well (without effort, its a role fit for the actor) but has no - let me rephrase - SHOWS no depth in terms of cinema.
I couldn't give it too bad a rating because I liked the first half, but didn't even keep me interested enough to finish the movie, and liking the first half was only somewhat.

An Ideal Husband (1999)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d3/Ideal_husband_ver3.jpg/220px-Ideal_husband_ver3.jpg
Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for a farce about British aristocrats scheming against each other. Perhaps it's simply a weak adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play of the same name. I don't know, I haven't seen Wilde's play, but I'm sure it's worthwhile - it's been adapted four times to film, this one being the most recent.
I have seen Wilde's equally famous farce, The Importance of Being Earnest, a few times on the stage. At one point in the film, An Ideal Husband weaves a stage production of Earnest into the story - no doubt in a deviation from Wilde's script of An Ideal Husband, but cleverly nonetheless, because honesty is a central theme in the film.
Another central theme in An Ideal Husband is political corruption, and Julianne Moore delivers my favorite performance in the film as a lady whose deviousness rivals that of the Marquise de Marteuil in Dangerous Liaisons - a far superior screen adaptation. I thought the other main actors in An Ideal Husband were guilty of too much hamming, particularly Rupert Everett. That kind of exaggerated expression in a farce might be more suitable on the stage, but in close-up camera shots it quickly gets wearisome - and it converts the ample wit in the script from an asset into a liability.

I rather enjoyed the realistic grittiness as opposed to the sensational/Hollywood approach to the genre. The actors across the board did excellent work, retaining the very believable essence of the story line. The unique quality of the film was that, with a lot of flicks, there's a very strong musical background to the scenes, while this relied on political speeches - rather intriguing.
I think the only downfall was the 98 min running time, which is my own pettiness because all that needed to be done was done in the scope of the story, so. . .
Definitely worthwhile

This was the last movie in the First Films of Kurosawa collection I got from Criterion. I also have to say it was my least favorite of the 4. While the look and feel was great, it was a Japanese war propaganda film that stressed the need to work hard even at the expense of one's own family life. It was not something I could swallow. Kurosawa stated himself that he did not believe the films message. But he did do a hell of a job shooting it so that counts for something.

It would have been better off as a tv series. There's too much information crammed into the 2 hours that the plot gets muddied.
Manhattan murder mystery - 7/10
My experience on Woody Allen is so far incredibly weird, erratic and unpredictable. In general I enjoy his works but it seems I'm not totally into his style. This one was an enjoyable, hilarious at times experience, but also a little fast-paced/neurotic in its dialogues to fully appeal to my comedy tastes. I also liked the first half more than the second, maybe due to (spoilers)
the fact that the murder became an actually real thing. I was sort of disappointed because during the whole movie it was being used as a MacGuffin, and the stuff that mattered was the stagnation of the marriage relationship. The late revelations confirming its existence gave it a prominent role in the story and I became less interested.
Silence of the lambs - 10/10
One of the many tops of the 90s I still was yet to watch. Admittedly, I tend to be very receptive to these kinds of thriller narrations, but it was a pleasant surprise anyway, since for some reason I didn't expect to enjoy it to this level. Anthony Hopkins' performance as Hannibal Lecter was mesmerizing, it made the movie for me.

Ivan's Childhood by Andrei Tarkovsky

Best feature-length directorial debut I've ever seen. Also one of my favorite Criterion covers.
i watched memories of a murder, i think recommended by someone here.
it was good, even though i'm not a big murder mystery guy it kept me entertained. it was different than any movie i've seen so far, it had that going for it too.
So I have just finished Black Book, by Paul Verhoeven (2006).
Despite its apparent classicism, this movie turns very soon to become a sample of what this director seems to do so greatly: unsubtle and over-the-top imagery. Expositional dialogues, unbelievable coincidences, blood splatters, explicit nudes...
In the middle, though, a very exciting and well-paced story about espionage and double agents in the nazi occupied Netherlands; however
once the surrender comes, Verhoeven doesn't simply stop there and attacks on the double standards of the winners, shaping a portrayal of the post-World War II Europe, its thirst for reprisal, that I have never seen in a movie.
I didn't love everything about this movie though, and wasn't very fond of the comedic attempt at one particular scene involving a certain religious murder, but it's overall a great one.

By the way, how does the spoiler button work exactly? I don't seem to have understood it...
I'm sorry for doubleposting, but I (re)watched Gladiator.
First, the good: it is a very competent story in its purpose; it's epic when it has to be, and emotional when it has to be. The director clearly knows how to handle the emotions, and this is specially noticeable at the final scene, which is easily the greatest of this movie. The pacing for such a long story is very well-distributed, which means that regardless of how little I actually emotionally get from this work, I keep entertained and that's a big enough merit.
The character development, however, is very shallow, they basically don't show change through the whole story and the only one who may have a noticeable development, Maximus, is sort of burdened by an inefficient performance of Russell Crowe. This wouldn't be a problem if the time exposition of this movie wasn't so large, but it ends up tiring. Its main problem is that it depends on those moments of epicness and tragedy, and the rest are lacking. Simply because the characters are not interesting. At times, I enjoyed the scenes at the emperor's palace more than the whole drama of Maximus.
The soundtrack is another issue I have. It really drove me nuts at some times. I didn't understand the aesthetical choice behind Now we are free at the ending. Just no.

Watched We Own the Night. It sounds weird but it is one of my favorite bad movies to watch. I like the work of Duval, Wahlberg, Phoenix, and yes, even Eva Mendes, so watching them all in the same film is fun. Though the film itself is a bit of a mess.

Good review. I felt much the same way about this film. I might even give it a slightly lower rating. Saw it when it first came out and don't plan to watch it again.
Despite all the great production work that went into creating this believably epic canvas, the movie's central dynamic between the Russell Crowe and Joaquim Phoenix characters was so cliche as to make the film tiresome.

Princess Mononoke
Third Miyazaki film I've seen, others being My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away.
Got to say this one was my favourite, and just maybe my favourite animated film i've seen.
Don't think i'd have ever discovered that film had i not come on to this forum.

I discovered Miyazaki just screening through the IMDB's top 250, best thing a film list ever did for me. I was a bit hesitant to watch his films at first (since they are cartoons) but after reading Roger Ebert's review of Spirited Away I decided to try it.
Last movies I watched, from my MoFo Hall of Fame marathon:
American History X - It has been years since the last time I watched this movie. Very, very good, but lacks a certain measure of complexity and the cinematography is a bit bland (they also have to zoom in so much that the actor faces are bigger than the screen?). 4
Robocop - I was really impressed by it, re-watching it since the last time I saw it 5-6 years ago. Really. It is not, technically, a very well executed movie, but in it's simplicity it has some grace and elegance. And the science fiction concept is also very interesting. Overall, I would say it is among the best science fiction films I ever watched. 4_5 +
