I didn't like 8 1/2 either.. But my one of my favorite films (Top 5) is La Strada. And just because some of us didn't like it, doesn't mean you didn't get it. One day I might give it a second watch, but I'm anxious to tell you all about the film (that could be my favorite) that I just saw.
I also loved The Seventh Seal, and Touch of Evil, but we're all different, and no one should ever be pressured to love or dislike something.

Caged - 7/10 - Thanks for recommendation Citizen Rules! I had to leave what I was doing to see this, and wouldn't have seen the film after! Really good film about women and the prison system, rehabilitation..
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f9/Caged1_1950.jpg
I cheered outloud when Kitty stabbed Evelyn, that mean sadistic bitch. Great pick, you could tell as soon as the film began she was a miserable one. I couldn't stand the sadism and the corruption, but loved the camaraderie amongst most of the women. And in the end, "She'll be back" - and the recidivism is still very high. It's a big business now; the US jails more (per capita and total) than China and Russia, which wasn't true back then.

Birdman of Alcatraz (Frankenheimer) - 10/10
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/13/Bird_man_of_alcatraz342.jpg
I was thinking about San Francisco for many reasons, actually who I went and saw, and I thought a lot about you guys, hoping you saw this film. I had never even heard about it! I wouldn't have seen this film if it wasn't for an earlier recommendation.
This film was beyond amazing. I was proud of all the tears I shed for this film. I love Nashville, but I don't know if it's better than this. Might have to change my Top 10.
I loved the early scene when Bull, Stroud's guard, appears to have empathy, and to treat him like a human being, only to be treated not so much by Stroud, who is solitary confinement. Finally, Bull breaks, "I'm a man, just like you!" - you would expect this type of response by the prisoner, not the guard, and it was Bull who could have been responsible for the true rehabilitation, and he realizes it, and devotes his life to one bird by chance, and then his entire life - the empathy, wow... It was real funny when the bird was referred to as "little punk" or "yellow" - and when the bird comes back, he's told, "Too tough out there? Come back for the prison security? Bord freeloader, panhandler, too tough being on the outside. And then when a great woman comes to his rescue, and becomes a wedge between son and mom, and we find the mother's ego is stronger than her love for her son. And Stella isn't seeking publicity, she goes all the way. That's true love.... And when he confronts Malden, to say he failed at rehabilitation, which he did. Please watch this film. I'm almost tempted to run to my library to see if they have it, though I was just there yesterday.

An Autumn Afternoon (1962)
http://screencrave.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/An-Autumn-Afternoon-Jaime-2-October-2013.jpg
I'm speechless. This film was simply brilliant. I've never seen anything remotely like it. It's so perfectly structured and yet completely refreshing the whole time. Man, what a film. I'm totally stunned.
I'm curious how I'll like Ozu's black and white films (the next film of his I'm going to watch is probably the famous Tokyo Story), because -besides the unsurpassed framing and the meticulously paced editing rythm- the use of colors in this film is one of the reasons why I loved this so much.
I also just really loved the story, the environment and the characters of this film. It's such a warm, rich, gentle, light, funny (I laughed quite a lot actually) and yet very melancholic film. I could barely hold back my tears anymore at the end. It's been a very long time since a film had such a profound effect on me.
After the film was over, I just stared at my screen and said "wow" a couple of times. Thank you, mr. Ozu. This film reminds me why I love cinema so much.

Don't become one of those people that writes off everything that isn't ordinary, conventional or immediately understandable as artsy crap. You might not always like or connect with films like these from the very start, but you would miss out on a lot of great film experiences if you ignored them.
Stay open-minded and rediscover certain films again in a couple of years, when you feel your senses and thoughts have "matured" or simply changed.
You won't like every film, but at least you should give all time greats like 8 1/2 more than one chance. ;)
Same open minded mentality applies to moe stuff like the K-On! film I nominated for the HoF. :)

SCARFACE (1932)
Listen little boy, in this business there's only one law you gotta follow to keep outta trouble~ Do it first, do it yourself, and keep on doin' it. Johnny Lovo is boss on the South Side of Chicago with the hot dame girl, least for starts. Paul Muni as Tony Camonte is his gun-crazed muscle. Boris Karloff makes an appearance as Gaffney, rival North Side gang leader. South Side Chicago vs North Side. And some stiff goon lawmen, the clean folk are always so dry and boring in these crime pictures. Tony Camonte is the star, dialogue gets hokey when he's not on-screen. Tony's power-hungry & a colorful character, he likes show-biz and is a logistics mastermind
Hey, Little Boy, you go 'round back, up the balcony.
Hey Pietro, side door. He may have friends, you can never tell.
Joe, I want you to stand in the alley. If he gets that far, you do your stuff

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1951)
Usually take notes while movie-watching, to have a guide of my thoughts. Strangers On a Train wrapped me up and pulled me in so well, i forgot to write a single thought. Fascinating story of a psychotic stranger messing with the life of a famous tennis star. This gripped me as much and maybe more than any other Hitchcock

Funny Girl (1968) 3
I didn't realize this was a musical, and after 10 minutes, I thought I'd hate it. I didn't like the look or the music, and Barbara Streisand was annoying me for the first time. This was her first movie, and she won the Oscar for her performance. She quickly won me over, and so did the movie. It's charming with just the right amount of humor, and I liked the love story. The big problem for me was that it seemed to go on for way too long. Up and down, but it left me with a positive feeling overall.

Death Note (TV series) 6/10
The first half is easily the best; I really enjoyed watching Light and L trying to outsmart each other though it did get start to get a bit stale by the middle of the show. The second half is a mess though. The writers kept pulling new characters and new rules for the Death Note out of nowhere and cramming plot twists into every second or third episode. I like that they were trying to keep things unpredictable but it got old really fast. After a while I stopped caring about what happened because I knew the writers were going to go "HAHAHAHA! Plot twist! Fooled you! What you thought was happening wasn’t really happening because this is what was really happening! Or was it? MUHAHAHAHA!" It’s a decent show overall but there are much much much better ones out there.

Weekend (1967) 2.5
I was really liking the first 40 minutes of this. It's supposed to be a black comedy, but at first I found it more on the disturbing side. It was like the old saying about seeing a car accident and not being able to look away, and probably not too coincidentally, there are several car accident scenes. The point seemed to be people's lack of empathy towards other's suffering. It got to where I wanted the story to progress, but the director really seemed to want to beat you over the head with his message. The movie then starts to get political, and it became a bit of a mess for me. This is a very strange movie, yet watchable and somewhat fascinating.

Having seen this, The Producers and Spaceballs, I am certain Mel Brooks is a comedic god! No scratch that, he is THE comedic god! No other movies like those three made me laugh like that (with the exception of Airplane!). Only Young Frankenstein (my first film of his.) disappointed me. High chance of making my top 30.

Friday the 13th: Part 3 - 6.5/10
Again, this series surprised me by how good its early entries are years later on the rewatch. This would have been a comparatively excellent ending for the series if it would have been left alone as originally intended after this. The kills were obvious improvements over the first two films, even showing a bit of artistry in how Shelley was assaulted off-screen, then goes after the girl he was with while disguised as him. Shelley's actual on-screen death was nothing short of brilliant, being dismissed as a joke until well after the point of expiration. The final memorable dispatchment was when Jason killed a gagged kid just around the corner of the girl looking for him, showing both in the exact same shot. The characters were likable enough and the 3-D moments weren't as incessently prevalent as I would have thought. If they had simply gotten rid of the prank war with the biker gang, this would have been my favorite of the series.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter - 6/10
The series definitely lost something between the third and fourth film. It stopped trying to be "good" and started going for gorier and more numerous scares instead. I can't deny that some were pretty entertaining, but it lacked a lot of what made the first three so memorable. Still, the characters were given more depth than later slasher films would bother with, the tag-team of Crispin Glover and Corey Feldman was as pleasing a surprise as Kevin Bacon in the first film and it was an all-around entertaining horror outing (if not an especially good one).

I think the film was weird for the sake of being weird. It wasn't thought provoking and I didn't feel like there was any deeper meaning to it. Its strangeness was enough to keep me watching through its (thankfully) short run time, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it and probably won't ever watch it again.

https://filmgrab.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/164.jpg?w=740&h=
Well, the director didn't want that may be...is it sometimes better to try and see why the director might/ might not have wanted something, to find out what his intention was in not progressing with the story? I get the point that Weekend itself might have made that expectation in the viewer that the story might progress...but isn't that always the case with Godard...in many of all his films the protagonist while going through a terrible moment of crisis (committing murder may be) is seen enjoying a conversation in a restaurant about some German musician of the 17th century with two unknown strangers... for 15 minutes. :)

The movie Weekend didn't start to get political from a particular point...it has been political from the beginning (all movies for that matter)...in fact the point that you wrote about the film had made before getting into "political...mess" is also very political. Quoting you "The point seemed to be people's lack of empathy towards other's suffering"...Godard always had this direct tone of addressing...may be he wanted to "mess" it up :)
all films are political, Godard's more so...

The Big Racket - damn this was grim and violent. Was rejected by the BBFC on its initial release in the 1970s, even now only available in the UK with cuts. I just got the US release, apparently Americans are better adjusted and can watch this film uncut without problems. I have killed three people since watching it, but otherwise all is good.
Excellent atmosphere and action scenes are always a Castellari highlight, but at least in the English dub the criminal protection gang sounded too generic and implausible in their goals to be realistic.

Keanu Reeves plays it cool in this stylish fast-paced action flick about an ex-hitman known for his brutality and determination who is sucked back into a life of crime after his former employer's son kills his dog, which was the last gift presented to him by his recently deceased wife, and steals his car.
The movie is lots of fun. Keanu Reeves makes for a slick action hero, and is quite possibly the most underappreciated movie star of our time.

I love Hammer Films, so I was sure to catch When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth (1970), starring the lovely Victoria Vetri. Lots of fun, with cavemen, cavewomen, dinosaurs galore, etc. etc. What was really fun is the language that the cave, um, people, use. There were strangely familiar words like: Akita, Nikita, Madonna, Rasta, and Nietzsche. At least it really sounded like them. :)

It's hard to be sure what this director's motives are, although I'm generally a fan. His movies push boundaries, and this one is no different. It's far from his best work, but it has plenty of shocking, uncomfortable, and effective scenes. It's also very sexually explicit.

The Hidden Fortress (1958) - Akira Kurosawa Just like Yojimbo it is a more entertaining side of Kurosawa. I could even say that Akira made an adventure film here. Personally, I love it, but I see why some people may think it's inferior to Kurosawa's more humane and serious works.
I have to rewatch Ikiru. It didn't do much to me the first time, although I still thought it's good. 3.5

Watched Bear Island (1979) last night. It is a surprisingly loose adaptation of the excellent Alistair MacLean nove, although it manages to be pretty enjoyable on its own merits, a classic thriller with some good acting from the strong cast which includes Donald Sutherland, Christopher Lee, Richard Widmark and Lloyd Bridges as well as Vanessa Redgrave although she is lumbered with a bizarre Norweigan accent.
Don Sharp's direction is beautiful with some scenic Canadian locations and a minimum of studio work. A match for Carpenter's The Thing in its capture of a real arctic setting. The Sony UK DVD is a little grainy and with some speckling but in full OAR and seems to be uncut (the UK VHS release was inexplicably missing some ten minutes).
My complete review with pictures - Bear Island (http://mondo-esoterica.net/Bear%20Island.html).

Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning - 4/10
Looking back on it now, while it isthe first bad movie of the series, I can't help but appreciated what it was trying to do: a Friday the 13th without Jason. It returns to the original film's largely first person kills and central mystery of who the killer actually was. It pulls both of these off better than the original, plus features some of the more intense death sequences in the series thus far. That being said, however, the film's pretty much a mess, with the most incessantly obnoxious characters in the entire franchise. Although I appreciated what it was trying to do, it never really came together like other filma in the franchise did.

Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI - 6.5/10
I keep alternating between giving this one a 6.5 and a 7. Either way, this is unquestionably the best film of the series. Keeping Tommy as the protagonist made it feel more significant than a random stand-alone film would have. The atmosphere was pervasively dark and menacing, the kills were consistently great and having the camp filled to the brim with children really upped the ante from the previous films. Although a tad questionable, the climax was satisfyingly cool and a fitting close to Tommy's troubled story.

One of the beautiful things about the film is its raw visual power, there is very little dialogue in the film, and is intensly suspenseful almost throughout the whole film. Eastwood is great as well. Also a film that clearly inspired Shawshank Overratedemption, with the nice black man helping the white man escape from prison. Great film with a mysterious ending, just like the real life story of which the film is based on.

BASEketball (1998)
Coop and Remer invent a new sport called baseketball in their driveway and it becomes an international sensation complete with psych-outs, busty bimbo cheerleaders, big business, and Bob Costas commentary. The debut of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park. They're joined by Yasmine Bleeth aka Kelly Kapowski. And Jenny McCarthy, who is a really smart person. And Squeak Scolari. The movie is pretty simple and if you give it a chance there's good times to be had

Non-Stop (2014)
This movie got a fairly severe beating from critics, but I'm not sure how it did at the box office. Either way, I found it immensely enjoyable. It played out as a "who-done-it" on a airliner or rather a "who-is-doing-it," and it kept me guessing all the way. Liam Neeson did a fine job as an alcoholic air marshal trying to keep people from dying and trying to find the perpetrator at the same time. Julianne Moore does very well as a passenger who helps Liam and is a person of interest in Liam's investigation. The beautiful Michelle Dockery lends support as a flight attendant. Great fun all the way.

Gets better each time I see it. The cinematography and visual beauty of this film is out of this world, the Johnny Greenwood score is sublime, and the performances are some of the best my little eyes have ever seen. I usually wait for the movie tab to post about films I just watched, but I knew Cobpyth would be curious about my thoughts. I find it awesome that Ozu was able to use the same trademarks as in his black and white films but expand it to the next level with his color films. He used a lot of red color to pull his viewers in. I noticed this and ironically Roger Eberts review says the same very thing. The acting is great, the story is solid (although the theme has been used before, but Ozu generally tends to use many of the same themes) and the camera work is admirable. and the ending to the film like with the other films of his ive seen, is really captivating. Ozu is 3 for 3, and while this is really good, it is a notch below Tokyo Story and Late Spring, which are the other too I've seen. But don't take that as a diss, think of it like Gran Torino being a notch below Unforgiven and Mystic River for me :p.

I feel you. Hope you understand why I dig the film though. It's an audiovisual triumph in my eyes and there are some damn stunning sequences scattered throughout it. The opening boat race, trailer park rescue, final shootout(In the air tonight ),etc. I think Mann was really onto something here as the digital photography is used to full effect. I can definitely see why you like it. I also agree about the visuals, the film has quite a few stunning shots but the camerawork mostly bothered me, I've no idea why Mann used so much handheld. Collateral looks just as stunning (if not more), but I find that one to be way more taut and focused in terms of narrative and everything else. I'll be checking out Thief pretty soon, that looks like something I might love
Yeah definitely check out Thief, damn good film. I can't wait to check out Blackhat when it comes out on Blu-Ray. I know it got crapped on by critics but it seems that among Mann fans that its actually considered quite good. Definitely curious where I stand on that one. DIdn't like it as much as the reviews about it went...the final obvious showdown seemed far too dragged, those zoom ins seemed absolutely unnecessary and unfitting with the rest of the scheme and the end, for me, was much too melo...Toshiro Mifune was, as always, excellent though and the build up (till a point) was astonishing...but it is the last 30 minutes that pulled it down for me...

This is the first real let-down for the otherwise immaculate Blumhouse Productions. It's like their version of Pixar's Cars: not strictly speaking terrible, but certainly bad enough to destroy the myth of unerring perfection that they've cloaked themselves in thus far. It was an unfrightening string of missed opportunities populated by poorly rendered and developed characters. It could have been extraordinary, and yet feels like a somewhat better version of Event Horizon / darker version of Lucy.

From the director of the Re-Animator comes this low-budget revenge film starring silver screen legends Daniel Baldwin and George Wendt. I was looking forward to this; I knew what it was about, I had heard it was disturbing, and the reviews are very good for a movie like this. I was really digging it for about the first half, as the low budget added to the gritty realism. The movie gradually gets dumber and dumber, and the budget then begins to be a distraction. Brutal and bizarre, and a nice job by the cast, but ultimately a disappointment.

This is a subject I have great interest in; I know a lot of escorts, and I know a lot about the sex trade, not as a client, but through some work that I do. Most movies about this subject seem to be mostly unrealistic ala Pretty Woman, or feature women who are abused or on drugs, which is often the case. This movie shows another side that is also rather common-a fairly normal young woman who simply needs or wants money, and easily and willingly gets into the business. It's a solid movie, yet I found it unremarkable except for Anna Karina, who is very watchable, both as a talented actress, and an amazing beauty.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 (2013) 2.5
My 3rd movie from this director after Antichrist and Melancholia, and I feel similar about all of them-flashes of brilliance, very good acting, and a few dull spots. Lars Von Trier is such a talented filmmaker, but I often get the feeling that he's more interested in himself than he is the audience. I was planning on watching Vol. II today but I think I'll pass. I still want to see Von Trier's Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark.

The movie wasn't bad because Johnny was an a$$hole. One minute, some guy is raping someone, and they coincide together real stupidly. Anyone can make a movie with people spouting out many quotes who have been told thinkers before, that's another way to mug the audience to make it more important than it is.
There were too many scenes or lines that didn't affect the film, and wasn't interesting. It had it's moments, and it didn't make me feel they were lonely. Just nuts...

Melancholia was a good start, it's probably his most accessable film. But Nymphomaniac is the one you should see last imo. Or at least not until you are very familiar with his work. It contains thousands of references to previous films, and it is pretty much his magnum opus in my opinion.
But yeah, with Trier films you really have to surrender to whatever might happen. You gotta have the right mindset, if not, you will be taken completely out of the movie. Anyways, I hope you connect with his work some day, cricket. :)

I watched this one other time when I was 17 (almost 16 years ago), Really good film, but I've had enough of cold war films.
I might have only watched it back then because it was "banned" or taken out of certain circulation by Sinatra. I thought I read it was banned until 1980, but this might have been another country, and I remember it was advertised as being so similar to the JFK assassination (it isn't).

This was a forgotten favorite from my childhood. It's been probably 25 years since I last watched it and I thought I'd probably hate it - but I was wrong! It's so silly and full of ridiculous but amusing puns. It's also surprisingly emotional. More surprising was that I actually liked most of the songs.

Holds up as one of the greatest adventure movies of all time. I am surprised at how well the visuals hold up. It was fun to see my two boys respond to the same things I always have. The opening scene, the fight at the plane, the truck chase, and even Jones using his gun against the show off. Great viewing experience for me. I love seeing movies for the first time with my kids. They loved it so much we are going straight into The Temple Of Doom. They survived melting faces now we will see how they do with heart removal. I will mange to traumatize them yet. :D

That's a tough rating; I'm not a huge fan of political films but this drama/thriller is surely one of the best. I don't know anything about it's accuracy, but it's based on actual events. Basically, you have an incident, and then the investigation/cover-up, but that is selling it short because it is a unique film. Z was the first movie to garner Academy Award nominations for both best foreign language film, and best picture.

The Great Dictator (1940)
I'd seen this as a youngster and remembered little of it, save that I enjoyed it. On re-watching it, I enjoyed it again, on a different level. The first portion is mainly slapstick and is hilarious, with the second half getting more serious and ending with Chaplin's famous plea for peace and brotherhood. As a kid, the reality of the treatment of the Jewish people by the Nazis went straight over my head. This time it had me wondering, "should I be enjoying this?" since it was part comedy also. But I went with it because of Chaplin's vision and by the end I saw what a great movie it indeed was.

Kevin Costner has been on a comeback recently, appearing in more and more high profile films.
Draft Day received mostly positive reviews when it came out, and was compared to Brad Pitt's Moneyball.
To make a long story short, Moneyball was very entertaining, but Draft Day lagged and was a bit too boring for me.
Ivan Reitman is the director. He's come a long way since his 80's and 90's hits like Stripes, Ghostbusters, Twins, and Kindergarten Cop. Too bad he isn't relevant anymore.

The Lazarus Effect - 5/10
This is the first real let-down for the otherwise immaculate Blumhouse Productions. It's like their version of Pixar's Cars: not strictly speaking terrible, but certainly bad enough to destroy the myth of unerring perfection that they've cloaked themselves in thus far. It was an unfrightening string of missed opportunities populated by poorly rendered and developed characters. It could have been extraordinary, and yet feels like a somewhat better version of Event Horizon / darker version of Lucy.
For anybody who's interested, I have a full review of the film up here (http://unrealitymag.com/movies/the-lazarus-effect-is-dead-on-arrival/).

Barefoot in the Park (1967) - 3/10
You can tell this was made first for the theater, and first by writing, as there are some nice writing exchanges, but it doesn't translate. I thought Jane Fonda was pretty awful, Redford was decent, his subdued acting was needed for Jane's hysteria, overreacting, ruckus over nothing. There was a lot of repeating... The "going up to the stairs" fiasco took half of the movie. It tries to play real, when almost every second is fiction.
And then to top it off, I hear a voice not familiar, as it was disguised with an accent, but I could tell just by the rhythm it had to be Charles Boyer. His face was disguised, and I look at the DVD cover, it was him... I didn't like him in Gaslight, Algiers, and this film. Different roles, but he's always annoying, with his little soliloquies.
I saw this film many years ago, and just wanted to test it on me as a 32-year old.

Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
While I can watch a musical and enjoy it, I prefer ones where the actors/singers don't just break out into a song for no reason. I like to have a little story with drama/comedy to go along with the songs. And that is why I liked the GDo1933 quite a bit. It stars Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, Warren William, Guy Kibbee, and a very young Ginger Rogers. The usual forbidden love, let's put on a show (Broadway this time), mistaken identity, and everything wrapped up in a bow by the end, all augmented by great Busby Berkeley musical/dance set pieces.

It deftly takes influence from Moore era Bond to Harry Palmer, The Avengers, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Bulldog Drummond, and Our Man Flint; even Matt Helm. The amped up violence does make it a little uneven at times, but it's very funny and there are at least three excellent white knuckle sequences... plus an underground lair. You can't go wrong with an underground lair. The cast are all great too. See it.

I saw the trailer and liked the first half of it, but then thought it looked a little 'off'. In other words, I liked the silly stuff. :D

Like many other romance films, this one is mainly conversation-driven. But unlike many other romance films, this one does not force the tenderness nor the sentimentality through standard, cheesy, lovesick phrases. Instead, it lets the romantic quality naturally flow and take its own path, mirroring the insecurities and imperfections of real life, so the tenderness and the sentimentality become a hundred times more touching.
Despite the constant talking and lack of large, emphasized actions it is far from a dull movie and it definitely does not lack profound, silent moments (the scene pictured in the gif above, in which Celine [Julie Delpy] and Jesse [Ethan Hawke] awkwardly try to look at each other without letting the other catch the glance is one of the most memorable scenes. It is simple but so effective, so moving, and it says the most, even if almost no words are delivered by the characters. Its effectiveness is not only due to the qualities of the specific scene itself, but also because of the contrast between it and the rest of the dialogue-filled film).
The topics discussed between the two characters start as silly and mostly innocent observations or remarks, yet as the conversations keep unfolding and unfolding they end in deeply philosophical and beautifully poetic exchanges. Yet they do not take themselves seriously, the film itself does not seem to take itself seriously, because just like life, it cannot be tightly controlled, it simply continues in an uncertain yet natural progression. And henceforth, despite its intelligence, this movie still manages to capture the awkwardness and ambiguity of the very flawed real life, making it splendidly tender and genuinely endearing.

Great review! A Top 5 film of the 90's.
It's real, because I've had the same exact situations meeting some girl on a train in Europe (minus the love part).. The script was great and interesting. This film didn't cost hardly any money in comparison, it's just really good. I don't think this was even nominated for an Oscar :(

I kept seeing this title around here, and I'm a big Lancaster fan, but was pretty disappointed. Maybe I've just see too many film noirs, as they all seem to becoming so similar. That's the problem of categories, it looks it's factory made.
I also expected more because Richard Brooks and John Huston co-wrote the screenplay, and I'm big fans of them as directors and writers.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood - 5/10
Other than the needless wrinkle to the established franchise formula in the form of a psychic girl struggling to control her powers, this was a fairly standard entry into the series. The means of resurrecting Jason was definitely over-written, but the kills were all solid, the characters well enough (at least as far as the seventh instalment in an already shakey slasher franchise goes) and the unfolding events reasonably enjoyable. When push comes to shove, it's really only on the lower-end of average quality.
http://cdn.filmschoolrejects.com/images/jason_takes_manhattan.jpg
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan - 3.5/10
This was the point that the franchise stopped even trying to make sense (my personal favorite WTF moment: when the sewers of New York flood with toxic waste every night at midnight with no negative effects to the surface dwellers only a few feet above). And that's really sad, because I think that it has one of the best premises of the entire series: Jason on a boat. It's a cramped, claustrophobic setting that really offers no place for his victims to run to; it's also a more labarynthian setting, naturally seperating and sectioning off the teenagers for easy pickings without them being complete morons in the process. It's really so much wasted potential, and becomes especially unbearable when they reach the city.
https://shenanitims.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/jason-goes-to-hell-decapitated.png
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday - 2/10
This film is unquestionably the most needlessly confusing, least sense making film of them all. It bends over backwards to try to do something different and utterly fails with every attempt. It suffers from Part V's major shortcoming of not actually including Jason Vorhees, but tries to sidestep that by giving him some incomprehenible power to possess living victims. It tries to overthink a simple slasher film with the same style of exaggerated plotting from Part VII and is about as poorly realized as Part VIII. It is, in short, an absolute mess, but surprisingly not the worst one out there.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/it/9/96/Jason_X.jpg
Jason X - 1.5/10
This is hands down the worst Friday the 13th movie of them all, made at a time where launchig horror icons into space was all the rage, with a tone that comes full circle to a semi-frequent self-parody. The CG was God-aweful, the cybernetic Jason conceptually stupid and the characters insipidly one-note. Far too many deaths occur off screen and most of the ones we do see are questionably tame.

Looking back on the original, stand-alone franchise, I'd rank them:
1) Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
2) Friday the 13th Part III
3) Friday the 13th Part II
4) Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
5) Friday the 13th
6) Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
7) Friday the 13th Part V: The New Beginning
8) Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
9) Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday
10) Jason X

I've seen and love it. It's really nothing but a massive Monster Mash, but it's the best version of the exact movie that it wants to be. Both icons get their day in the sun, their fight was incredibly fun and the human victims aren't quite as stock as they were in the latter installment of either franchise.
The plan is to actually rewatch the Friday the 13th remake, then work our way through all of the Nightmare on Elml Street movies, then cap that off with Freddy vs Jason.

Freddy vs Jason isn't good. Jason X is brilliant. :p
Jason Takes Manhattan is the only one I've seen outside of the first two, all I remember is that it bored me to death. The Jason films aren't good on any level IMO, not even as ridiculous films to sit and laugh at.

The Match Factory Girl (1990) 2.5
This is a pretty dour movie with not much spark, although it's realism and believability were it's main pluses for me. The acting is good as well. I've seen this described as minimalist; more often than not, that simply tells me that not much happens, and is a sign for me to run the other way. It stays interesting, and with a 68 minute running time, it's short enough to keep me from getting bored, yet not long enough to get me completely involved. It's on the Ebert list and has a pretty good rep, so I wouldn't try to dissuade anyone from trying it, but it was just ok for me.

Nice Adventure from Kurosawa...but that second half seemed to drag a little bit and ultimately came to an obvious ending...
7.5 out of 10
End of Kurosawa for me...saw 24 of his in last one month or so, the rest I didn't find...those belonged to the 1940s...out of these 24 I find at least 8 films that I can call masterpieces. I am not sure if I can say that about many directors (Red Beard, High and Low, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, Ikiru, Rashomon, Ran and Kagemusha).

Foxcatcher (2014)
Steve Carell is truly remarkable and disturbing as the wealthy philanthropist and wrestling enthusiast John Du Pont.
Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo deliver solid performances as Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestlers and siblings, Mark and Dave Schultz, who are hired by Du Pont to lead his wrestling team into the championships.
I thought the movie was amazing, and definitely the best movie for its 3 leading stars.

For as awesome as Carell was, he was really the worst of the three principle actors. And how he could be considered lead instead of Tatum is beyond me. That being said, Foxcatcher was probably the best acted movie of 2014.

The performances in Foxcatcher are good, but I was disappointed we didn't get to see why DuPont became such a whack job. I think they could have shown more abuse of Mark just to know why Mark hated DuPont so much after awhile too.

I thought there were loads of subtle indications as to why he became crazy. I think its kind of realistic that it can't be pin pointed to specific things, there's not really a turning point, just a culmination of lots of different elements. The pressure from his mother, the want to be successful, be a leader, to be respected and 'normal' despite his family status, etc.
Yeah, I love how quiet and subtle Foxcatcher is. Everything is internalized in these men. There is no one big loud conflict that turns things. I loved the movie and thought Carell was great. All three were great in fact.

I thought the movie explained why Du Pont's character was psychopathic.
He was crazy because of his solitary life on the farm, and the way his mother brought him up to be a horse-loving feminine wimp. He becomes enthused with shooting guns and wrestling because he sees them as areas in his personality (masculinity) that are lacking. He is envious of Dave Schultz for being what he views as the ideal man and symbol of masculinity, a wrestling coach, mentor and father figure to his younger brother, and family man.

Haven't been rating many movies lately but I think everyone should give this a watch. Although, in my view, there's an unnecessary, poorly chosen epilogue, this movie is so very powerful on several levels. A real standout I won't forget.
