Probably made as a bit of an exploitative effort but this has it's qualities. Clear parallels make it a "version" of the Patty Hearst story (I don't think it would go even as far as "unauthorised" or "based on fact"). There's an eerie, sensual feel to the cinematography which I don't have a problem with. Another thing that makes this stand out is the music by Dave Evans...The Edge of U2 fame. Moody and considered.

Murder! (1930) - 5.5/10.
Hitchcock in his formative years. He was a bit all over the place really with this one. A nice watch, but nothing to remember fondly. Audio in those days was so new that a background score or a radio playing can turn dialogues off almost! Fun but nothing special!

Saw this earlier and had never seen original/stage version/anything. Couple of hours following a very thin but enjoyable story. The Popcorn and Fanta were better. My lad loved it and scanning the other seats, during the school holidays, the other kids were rapt.
As an adult, the voices were cr@p compared to The Jungle Book (2016) and the story utterly predictable from the get go.
Ho hum, should have had more Fanta :)

Watched it with my little siblings. Better than Avengers 3 and they killed Iron Man, which was tby far the best character of the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie is well made although I felt it was a bit overlong in some parts, in others it felt pretty good, kinda like Lord of the Rings style poignancy.

The only thing going for it: the bold decision to make some changes from the original, which gives it a "what if" angle:

Shadows: The Waiting Room (TV, 1975) – 4/10
The fourth episode in the series and it's interesting to see how the early episodes followed either of two phenomena:
possession or time travel
It's making me laugh how 'terribly terribly posh' the central characters have been in all but After School :), though that doesn't detract from a lot of good performances – the actresses especially (Jenny Agutter in this case – it's always brothers and trains with her isn't it?).
I thought this story was reasonable but the denouement was a great example of the rule quit while you're ahead. That's why I've ended up rating it so low.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Once in every generation or so a film comes along that perfectly addresses the public’s mood, while simultaneously satirizing the bleakness of its subject matter. Dr. Strangelove is one of history’s finest examples of satirical black comedy at its highest level.
During the mid 1960s the country was in its height of the Cold War. The Bay of Pigs had occurred; President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev had a major nuclear standoff; and finally the unthinkable JFK assassination-- all had combined to put the country on edge. Dr. Stangelove was a welcome source of gallows humor to help let off a little steam from the pressure cooker. As one can see from the film’s accessory title --”How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”-- people could honestly imagine and fear a nuclear conflict between the two superpowers.
Peter Sellers variegated earlier body of work, including The Pink Panther, attracted director Stanley Kubrick to cast Sellers in three distinct roles, including the title character, the U.S. president, and a military Group Captain. The film gets most of its comedic heft from Sellers’ memorable portrayal of these three parts. Sellers’ sight gags, mannerisms, voice accents, and complete character inhabitation provide wonderful satire.
The supporting cast is a dream, with first rate performances by Sterling Hayden, George C. Scott, and the venerable Slim Pickens. Reportedly Kubrick got an indelible performance from Scott by telling him to try a few sample takes in an over-the-top manner, but then used those takes in the film. Pickens was lead to believe that his was a serious role, learning only later that the film was a dark comedy.
Entire books can be written discussing “Strangelove”, its background, all the people involved, and its significance; but suffice to say that this movie is not only a top comedy, but one of the best films of the 20th Century.

1st Re-watch...This blistering and uncompromising human drama is an emotionally charged cinematic experience that will haunt long after the credits roll. Director Martin McDonaugh was robbed of an Oscar for this raw look at a mother's grief, what it drives her to and the consequences of her actions. This movie is frightening in its unpredictability because this story never goes anywhere you think it's going to. One of my favorite things about this story is the balance the story provides for the viewer...we understand Mildred and her grief, but we also understand the reactions of the townspeople, the ones who support her and especially the ones who don't. McDonaugh leaves no stone unturned here, creating a drama that will tie the stomach in knots. Frances McDormand provides a master acting class in her Oscar-winning performance as Mildred, that rivets the viewer to the screen with absolutely no scenery chewing and Sam Rockwell's explosive Oscar-winning performance is equally winning and don't over look Woody Harrelson and the amazing Peter Dinklage here either. This movie is appointment viewing and I think I'm upping my original rating.

The surprise smash hit movie of 1987 is high on my guilty pleasures list for a number of reasons. This movie has a lot going for it...a kick-ass score of some of the best music from the 1960's and a new song that won the Best song Oscar, a brilliant performance from the late Jerry Orbach as Baby's father, fantastic choreography by Kenny Ortega, clever direction from the late Emile Ardolino, but above everything else and what anyone seeing this movie will remember, is the undeniably smoking hot chemistry between the late Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the starring roles. I'm pretty sure in my list of Best Chemistry, these two were in the top ten and that finale never gets old.

The Hero (2017)
I 've always liked Sam Elliott ( really , who doesn't?) but know him more as a character actor in supportive , not starring, roles. And I've had a generally favorable impression of Nick Offerman, though quite frankly, my view came mostly from seeing the beautiful woodwork he showcased on the old Letterman show-but, man, can that guy build an oar.
So when I heard that these two men were in one movie, even though it was based on a not too sanguine theme, I decided to give it a go. Alas this is one movie that seemed to turn out to be less than the sum of its parts.
Briefly, the conceit of the film is that Elliott plays an actor named Lee whose last successful roles are decades behind him. Once a star of Westerns, ( his most iconic role titled The Hero) he's now reduced to using his deeply resonant and pleasing voice to sell barbecue sauce. He's also estranged from a daughter that he apparently paid no attention to for most of her life, and spends his golden years in a wasteful, pointless haze of getting zoned out on drugs. Nick Offerman plays his former costar and current drug dealer, and who also introduces Lee to a beautiful young woman with whom he embarks on a unlikely romance.
The crux of the film is that Lee has received a severe medical diagnosis, which is
the ( depressing) driving wheel of the meager plot. There's not a lot of substance to this story, and the characters are not really fleshed out or dynamic enough to gain much of our empathy. There are also some Western flavored dream sequences, which add little to the story except a benign confusion.
Questions about life are sketchily asked, but do we really want to wait around to find the answers? Will Lee find a way of reconciling with his daughter? Will he get the role in a movie, which he has been lying about already having obtained - supposedly to boost his ego or to keep from facing his fate: the viewer isn't exactly sure why. Actually, there are a number of inconsistencies in this movie, which I will not detail , except to say there are times when the viewer cannot suspend disbelief at the actions of the characters.
The film also moves along at a slow lugubrious pace. It is not as slow as the way time moves, say, when having root canal - but it IS as mercilessly slow as waiting to have root canal, when the dentist is an hour late (or in this case, an hour and a half, which is the length of the film).
There are a few highlights, which flash briefly on the screen, as we trudge through the plot. There are some moments when Lee shows himself as the consummate professional he once was - reading his lines with a passion born from his own self, or treating his starry eyed fans with a gentle kindness that shows us the man could be a class act. Most of the time, however he is a selfish, self indulgent wastrel and we question why he's even on good terms with his ex wife (Katherine Ross) - or, in fact, why we should care about him at all.
This is not to say that an audience cannot be thoroughly engaged by a character that has little moral center or purpose- Five Easy Pieces, one of my favorite movies, asks us to be invested in such a man. And we are- but that is a movie that is both funny and tragic, with unforgettable performances and sly twists of storyline - and as well crafted and finely polished as a rare diamond.
And there are times when this film rises above being a Hallmark movie for potheads - and manages to resonate the universal dilemma of how we view the journey of our lives, how fate can force us to reflect on our mistakes, and how we might seek to correct them in what seems like the final hour.
But unfortunately, the film as a whole doesn't explore these issues in a new or meaningful way, and we are left with the prospect of admiring a man who is not all that admirable. In fact, I found myself more invested in Sam Elliott, who can still command the screen at 70+ years, than the character he portrays.
I don't know if Sam is just meant to be a great supporting actor, but not one to shoulder a movie as the central star - or if this was just a poor choice of movie for him. As earnest as the premise may have been, and especially considering the dour theme; this movie is just a vehicle to pass the time. Slowly and not too gracefully , as does our anti - hero protagonist.
Probably would have given it even less stars, save for the still vital presence of Sam Elliott ( who still has the stuff to take on roles in better movies) and a few nice shots of the ocean.

Burn (2019)
The feature film debut of Chinese-American director Mike Gan, this is his love letter to the Coen Brothers. The film revolves around a gas station attendant who has grown tired of being overshadowed by her co-worker when a robber comes in. When the tables are turned on the robber, the once shy gas station attendant begins to understand him. Excellent performances by Josh Hutcherson (definitely against typecast) as the robber and Tilda Cobham-Harvey as the shy attendant who finds herself conflicted between doing the right thing and finding a means to break away from her humdrum life.

2.5
Personally, I think Sam Elliott TOTALLY carried this film and made it worth watching. I would go as far to say that if anyone but Elliott had played this role, I probably wouldn't have watched the whole thing.

Sweet little Irish film depicting an everyday family struggling, written by Roddy Doyle (The Commitments). A fine central performance from Sarah Greene as a mum of 4 desperately trying to do what's best for her children. There are some repetitive moments and some peripheral characters don't quite nail the part. It has very similar vibes to 'I, Daniel Blake', and some may find it bleak, but bleak doesn't bother me. The ending is abrupt but captures the uncertainty that the family faces.

Coming of age drama about taking the plunge into adulthood, peer pressure, sex and drugs. Mixed feelings about this one. There are some promising moments but it lacks the real punch that these type of films often give. At time sit felt like an episode of a TV drama. The comedy wasn't really funny enough and the drama didn't really hit home enough or feel real enough.
There is an especially trite scene in the second half of the movie which felt more in line with a crowd-pleaser like 'American Pie' than a serious drama, at other times the viewer is reminded of 'Spring Breakers'. Then shortly after that there are a couple of really lovely, tender scenes. That said, there was enough in the performances to keep me interested. Elaine Hendrix was the standout as the mother on the edge.

Hellboy 2019
A blistering success if you ask me, maybe because I found Del Toro's 2 movies so unimpressive and meh, yeah its much lighter and zippier in tone but at same time darker, even with some dodgy cgi moments, it was way out there and David Harbour's Hellboy worked brilliant. It's worth sticking right until the end credits, I hope they don't **** up this universe or turn it into fan fiction, for a comic book adaption this was a breath of fresh air and just a lot of fun.

I have never seen a movie that contains more bad directing, stupid dialogue, and hideous acting. It's amazing that Patty Duke ever got another acting job after this. This movie still makes me laugh out loud after 40 years. Susan Hayward's serious scenery chewing as Helen Lawson is too funny...Patty Duke's Rocky-style montage getting ready for her nightclub act and Barbara Parkins' modeling montage crack me up. And don't even get me started on Patty's scenes in the sanitarium. The only decent acting in this film came from Lee Grant...is there any movie released in 1967 that Lee Grant wasn't in? I have to confess to getting a little misty every time Sharon Tate hits the screen...what a beauty she was...what a shame.

Tone-Deaf (Richard Bates Jr., 2019)
Bates is known for well, making off the wall films. This film revolves around a woman who sucks in relationships and lost her job. Taking advice from her bohemian mom and friends, she rents a home for the weekend from a widower, who upon hearing her play the piano, slowly becomes a homicidal maniac killing those who attempt to get close to the woman...but she doesn't know it until the third act! Insane at times, great performances by Robert Patrick (who in terms of performance is going to be the next Nic Cage) and Amanda Crew. Kim Delaney has one of the best one-liners I've heard in a long time in the third act.

The Banana Splits Movie (Danishka Esterhazy, 2019)
At first, it sounded like a joke, but this was an insanely fun gory adaptation of the Hanna-Barbera children's classic. A young boy and his family gets to see the Banana Splits for the kid's birthday. When the show is set to be cancelled because of a punkboy new VP of programming, the Splits go mad and start killing staff, adult fans, and kidnap the little children. I swear, the central character of young Harley has to be the calmest young kid I've seen in a horror movie in a while. The deaths are extremely gory and well, the Splits themselves take a rebooted Child's Play thing going. Very gruesome and fun!

I should note that I've not seen either of these in years, but it was striking the interview statements taken from the local townspeople (fictional) during the investigation of Mississippi Burning. Statements almost verbatum in the news today. It was unsettling to a degree. Then I thought this is probably just humanity. Bias and discrimination has been part of our history since we stepped out of the cave, I'm sure. Ingroup/Outgroup or such.
Then I questioned whether the comments were the same because of our faults and bigotry or if "media" fanned the flames of the time similarly to how some claim this to be the case now.
That was a weird head trip watching these movies and recognizing (and even questioning, sadly) the parallels.

Burning (2018) - 9/10
This film blew me away on a handful of fronts. I think Lee did a great job at effectively conveying the emotions of the characters. This was conveyed by a number of stylistic strategies such as the camera placement, the set design, and the acting. For instance, take Jong-su's jealousy of Ben in the first half. Several sequences featuring Jong-su remaining silent as Ben and Hae-mi continue to chat and get to know each other around him, his various glances and remarks at the two which effortlessly capture subtle, yet firm expressions of alienation and melancholy, and all kinds of visual details which demonstrate how Ben is everything which Jong-su isn't succeed in getting under your skin far better than any direct statement of his jealousy would've been able to accomplish. Around the halfway point though, Ben confesses something to Jong-su which sends the film in a whole new direction (a change which is telegraphed to us by an abrupt and completely silent scene). This direction adds a consistent layer of slow burning suspense to the film which characterizes the rest of it. Throughout this part of the film, many indications that something is up are given to us as it goes on. In addition, Lee also makes us second guess a couple other details brought up earlier in the film which we believed to be true. As much as we (and Jong-su for that matter) hope to receive a definitive answer though, Lee refuses to supply us with one. He chooses to leave us hanging with a shred of doubt that we wish to see satisfied throughout the second half. Since the film is told from the point of view of Jong-su though, we go along and side with him. Does he do the right thing at the end though? The shred of doubt we've had throughout is what makes the payoff so effective. Once the credits roll, you can't stop thinking about what you've just seen.

overall i find it difficult to like this kind of movies.
on the other hand the dark knight is one of my favorites movies of all time,
maybe because of legendary heath ledger, and the director focus on a possible reality.
when i saw the first movie i thought: oh my god, this is terrifying.
than i saw the second one and i got a little better.
what terrifies me is how they made me empathize with the villain, with his ideas.
and if they made me, they probably made to the possibly billions of peoples that saw both movies.
a villain that is noble in a way, wants to do what he sees is important for everyone,
getting rid of the hunger and difficulty in the universe, prosperity for everyone after,
his not trying to piss the audience, he makes it all sound like a business, not personal,
he isn't a dictator, a authoritarian leader, he doesn't want to rule everyone and submit to his will,
he knows his end goal destroys him, "took everything from me" and saves the universe in a long run
all the other characters, obviously, can't even consider this perspective, his idea, but the audience did.
i saw a joe rogan podcast with ed calderon, a specialist in the mexican cartels, a survivor,
he said, sicario movie is not real in terms of action, in terms of politics was something not yet real,
he said, movies sometimes are for "feeling the ground" and give society, communities a heads up,
well, this audience was massive, and i might be just overthinking the situation, or not.
a tiny reserved number of individuals have enough weapons capabilities to destroy everyone,
and that's the only reason this system we have holds. they know, we know they do what they want.

My Neighbor Totoro (1988) rating_4
So I just got back from seeing this theatrically as part of GhibliFest 2019 and what an experience. It was great hearing the kids (of whom there surprisingly weren't very many) in the auditorium react to seeing and falling in love with it for the first time. Also, in the almost 21 years I've been alive, this is only the third time Dad and I have gone to see a movie, just the two of us so that was a plus, too. We went in and had a blast, enjoying the movie and munching on popcorn until we made ourselves sick. I did notice a couple of odd things with this screening, which I noticed immediately from having watched the film on Blu-ray several times. One is that the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio was cropped to 2.00. The second is that this was a subbed print, complete with subtitles to translate the Japanese dialogue and credits, which ended up getting cut off because of the strange decision to crop it, with the dub merely laid on top of it. Don't ask me why, but that was how this screening was. It wouldn't surprise me if it was just GKIDS being lazy, considering they couldn't be bothered to give my AMC the dubbed print of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind back in May, which understandably ticked me off to no end since Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is my favorite Miyazaki film and I'd been looking forward to seeing it theatrically for a while. Aside from that, though, everything was fine. Same great transfer from the Blu-ray, both video and audio, same great dub, same great movie. It's not up there with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, and Spirited Away but it's still a great one, unsurprising since he's never made a bad film. Some claim everyone who's directed more than once has made at least one piece of crap - not so with Hayao Miyazaki, though I'll admit I'm biased since he's one of my favorite directors. Sure, Satsuki and Mei don't face the seemingly insurmountable odds Nausicaä, Pazu and Sheeta in Castle in the Sky, or Chihiro Ogino in Spirited Away face or go on this huge adventure like they do, but My Neighbor Totoro isn't that kind of film. Even then, Miyazaki still gives it everything he's got. The animation is stunning, a given with Miyazaki. Joe Hisaishi gives another fine musical score; just a side note, I can't help hearing shades of Discouraged Pazu from Castle in the Sky in the latter half when Satsuki is looking for Mei. Also, I think it's pretty cool that the soot sprites in this film are the same soot balls later seen carrying coal in Yubaba's bathhouse. It's a film about family and the ties that bind, a simple and somewhat quiet film that suggests life is an adventure in and of itself. I can find things here to relate to also, even having been born some four decades after its setting and a decade after its release. My very first memory is of moving when I was three years old, just a little younger than Mei so I always remember that when I watch the opening minutes of this movie. I'm reminded of how much energy I had when I was much younger and the playfulness and imagination that only childhood has. I can also relate to how Satsuki and Mei worry for their mother in the latter half. I remember something that happened when I was seven years old. I remember how Mom collapsed in the shower that night and I remember being scared half to death at the sight of blood flowing out from under the bathroom door, how Dad rushed her to the hospital, and I'll never forget worrying over the next few days about what would happen to her when she'd had to go into surgery. Even so, Miyazaki chooses not to take it down a dark and depressing road and sticks with optimism through to the final frame. You can tell just as much love and care went into making it as those three films I've mentioned. All in all, even if not one of Miyazaki's very best, My Neighbor Totoro is a sweet, charming, and uplifting little film that I think someone would have to be very coldhearted to dislike. Disney's dub is still a great one, too. Yes, I know, there are some so in love with the old Streamline dub that they want to put Disney's in the ground, but I can't imagine it being any better than this one, from the voice acting itself to Sonya Isaacs's takes on Hey, Let's Go and Totoro. I actually read once where someone claimed Isaacs's version of Hey, Let's Go "[felt] like being kicked out into oncoming traffic" as opposed to the version from the Streamline dub, but I disagree. As many have pointed out, it was meant to be a happy song, which Isaacs handles with aplomb, and for my money, she's not very far removed from how Azumi Inoue sings the song in Japanese in terms of tone. The version in the Streamline dub just doesn't have as much enthusiasm behind it. So moving on to the actual voice acting. Dakota and Elle Fanning, 11 and seven at the time, are, for all intents and purposes, excellent as Satsuki and Mei Kusakabe. How they actually voice the characters is just perfect and because they are actually sisters, they're able to use that and inform their characters with a good deal of depth and how they play off of each other really works very well, and for my money, Disney couldn't have cast anyone better for the job. Tim Daly (who many will remember as the voice of Superman in the '90s cartoon) and Lea Salonga are also rock-solid as Tatsuo and Yasuko, the girls' parents, limited as their time onscreen may be. Pat Carroll is also a perfect match for Granny. Everyone else is also great in their respective roles and as you'd expect from Cindy Davis Hewitt and Donald H. Hewitt who wrote the dubs for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle, the dub script is completely natural. So, yeah, My Neighbor Totoro is still great, I really enjoyed seeing it in the theater and later, guys.

It's no coincidence that this was the first musical to win the Best Picture Oscar since 1969...everything works in this dark and dazzling film version of the 1975 Broadway musical.
Catherine Zeta-Jones' Oscar-winning Velma Kelly is mesmerizing and John C. Reilly steals every scene he's in as Amos Hart, but the real success of this film goes to Rob Marshall, whose focused direction and brilliant choreography make this film sparkle. 4.5

1st Re-watch...I don't know why this movie doesn't get the love it deserves because I find this film to be riveting entertainment. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) guides Jake Gyllenhaal through one of his best performances as a boxing champion whose life and career methodically fall apart after a personal tragedy. Gyllenhaal is ferocious and sensitive...watch him in that first courtroom scene where he loses custody of daughter...absolutely heartbreaking...speaking of which, a special shout out to Oona Lawrence in a star-making performance as Gyllenhall's daughter. 4

Quite simply, the best action comedy ever made...Eddie still makes me laugh out loud every time I watch this and everyone always talks about what a scene stealer Bronson Pinchot is as Serge, but for my money, the real scene stealing performance in this movie comes from Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood...one of cinema's most underrated performances...there's some real acting going on there. 5

Again, similar themes to the last four episodes in the series and I'm interested to see when there'll be a definite break from these. That being said, this is the first episode that actually had a scary moment, and I thought the episode was very well directed too.

The Great Hack
https://static.rogerebert.com/uploads/review/primary_image/reviews/the-great-hack-2019/hero_great-hack-image-2.jpeg
The Great Hack is pretty much sensationalism. It calls hacking the use of people's public information to target political ads. Thing is, since they put their information on a social network in the internet where billions of people have access to it so it's natural political campaigns will try to use that information to target advertising. It is obviously a movie made by people who regard Trump and Brexit something unacceptable and they use the internet advertising story as a way to convince themselves that these things were not really "democratic" (even though they, technically, were).

'In Fabric' (2019)
Dir.: Peter Strickland
https://i.imgur.com/DODnWwu.gif
Peter Strickland's 4th film is probably his most eccentric yet. A horror-comedy that involves sales season at a department store set in late 70s / early 80s England. It has a huge whiff of homage to giallo type Euro films and also has it's own identity in the form of sharply dry comedy dissecting consumerism and the obsession with shopping / clothes.
As with the majority of Strickland's films there is this other worldly feel to it, and there are no recognisable brands / materialistic objects that make us comfortable in a familiarity type way. Instead there are mysterious characters performing a variety of twisted acts on themselves and on mannequins. There are women with wigs, a very weird store owner, disappearing store assistants and untimely demises. How much of this is to be analysed and how much is Strickland's indulgence remains a bit of a mystery. But the journey was a great experience - the way it is shot (especially the main protagonist - a red dress) is beautiful, and the way it sounded (creaks, voices, pens writing, scratching, pipes moaning, elevators whining, washing machines spinning) was as eerie as it was awesome.
The two chapter style didn't really fit - perhaps these things tend to be better with 1 or 3. I can envisage this film being frustrating for filmgoers who prefer a more linear plot. There are lots of amibiguous characters and dialogues. But it's definitely worth a watch just for how different Strickland films are to most out there.

Evangelion: Death (True)² (1997) - First Time on Netflix 2.5
It's no secret that I'm a diehard fan of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. I own all three Rebuild movies on Blu-ray and I own End of Eva and as many of the episode collections as I could find for a decent price on DVD. Hell, I own all six volumes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days manga and I'd love to see it adapted as an anime. However, this one just wasn't getting it if you know what I mean. It's a poorly structured attempt to cram episodes 1-24 of the series inside of 70 minutes, interspersed with inserts of the pilots playing the cello, violin, and viola, and it doesn't really work at least in part due to its complete lack of continuity and context. It's neither terribly good nor terribly bad, just average, I guess. I guess it *might* be possible that I could have found it easier to get into if Netflix had gotten Spike Spencer and Tiffany Grant back to voice Shinji and Asuka, but I don't think even they could save this disjointed mess. As it is, it's the same dub Netflix made with its problematic script - "Third children." You're kidding, right? So it's poorly structured, it completely lacks context and continuity, and I (like many other fans of the franchise as it turns out) don't really see what purpose it serves. So what does all of that mean? I can't recommend it to newcomers who won't understand it at all and fans who have seen the series and End of Eva aren't missing anything aside from watching the pilots play instruments. Newcomers are better suited watching the series and I can't really recommend it to fans as anything more than a curiosity piece. While I did enjoy the insert scenes, which mixes my feelings on it enough to keep me from calling it terrible outright, I don't see myself rewatching this in the near future, if ever since I see no notable purpose that it serves to the Eva franchise.

Dir.: Jae-young Kwak
The First half was a little laborious with some odd slapstick comedy. The second half contains some of the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful, tearjerking cinema I have ever seen. It's a love story that contains tragic, funny, emotional and even supernatural elements - yet there's no kissing, no "I Love You's" and the main character's name is not even revealed once throughout the film.
It's based on a real life internet blog that a Korean student wrote in the late 90s about a relationship with a girl. Obviously many elements are embelished, and the film is more a fantastical, magical re-telling of the notion of fate versus coincidence. Romantic comedies are not normally films I enjoy but this is crafted so well using proper creativity and heart. It's a great journey. I can't imagine any country other than Korea pulling this film off. I'm not even tempted to watch the American remake.
I don't think I've ever ended up loving a film so much that I rated so averagely half way through.

I'm not sure if Alan Arkin's Oscar-winning performance as the foul-mouthed, heroine-snorting grandpa was better than Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls, but loved Steve Carell, Paul Dano, and the adorable Abigail Breslin.

A common theme which ran throughout Hitchcock's work was how his films would mislead you by starting off one way only for something to overtake them, setting them in a whole new direction. For instance, Rear Window starts off as an ordinary drama only to turn into a murder mystery. Vertigo starts off as a haunting ghost tale only for it to turn into a murder thriller. Psycho starts off as a crime thriller only for it to turn into a horror film. With this film, it starts out as an innocuous romance, only to turn into a creature feature. This turnover isn't nearly as memorable as the other three films I mentioned since the romance between Melanie and Mitch isn't particularly interesting or engaging, meaning my reaction to the turnover was "Good, it's finally moving along." Fortunately though, once it picked up, I was much more involved with it. This film could've just been another B movie, but due to several factors such as a slow, aggrandizing buildup full of slow-burning tension, multiple suspenseful and unnerving sequences which do a more than fine job of getting under your skin, and standout visual set pieces such as the iconic phone booth scene and certain shots of the birds near the ending, it became one of the best films this sub-genre of horror has to offer.

As soon as I typed this in looking for a photo, I see establishment media crying over this ("Vice" is another milquetoast joke), so of course, I want it to do even better. Society sucks, and someone needs to point it out. I could do without the celebrity crap - don't know them, don't care about them. I didn't realize until the near who "Juicy" was and I still don't know him... I'm glad Dave didn't use his body to hit the microphone 500 times! I laughed a handful of times - so it's a win for me. I'll need to take some time to fully collect my thoughts on the live-action Tokyo Ghoul film, but I feel comfortable it landed more on the positive spectrum as far as my expectations were concerned. As a fan of the anime series, I had a lot of apprehension when it came to a live-action film. I've been burned before, after all. Similar to the Fullmetal Alchemist film, it does feel like the filmmakers had a lot of affection for the series, featuring a lot of scenes that are directly from the source material (or, at least, the anime). Unlike the Fullmetal Alchemist film though, which tried to incorporate so much content into it, Tokyo Ghoul doesn't even cover the first season of the series. Instead, it lands somewhere in the middle of the season, and ends before things really get dicey. The special-effect aren't ideal, but they're on-par with expectations given the budget. Even though I said it was more conservative than Fullmetal Alchemist, I still found myself thinking it could have slowed down and smelled the roses. In-fact, that's a sentiment I feel about the anime series as well.

Patema Inverted (2013) - First Time on Blu-ray - 4.5
Whoa. This movie really delivers. Writer-director Yasuhiro Yoshiura does a really good job here. Some might take issue with how its endgame leaves some things to the imagination but is that really a bad thing? I'd say it even leaves room for a sequel, a sequel I'd be down with watching if they ever made one. Its premise and story of reversed gravities are very well-suited to the medium of animation and Yoshiura takes full advantage of this, swiveling the frame upside down several times to show how its characters see the different worlds they are thrust into. The animation is stunning, as you'd expect from a 2013 anime, and the 1080p transfer does a great job of reproducing this while Michiru Oshima's musical score comes across loud and clear on the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. The English dub from GKIDS is a really good one. Michael Sinterniklaas, who many will remember as Kenji Koiso in Summer Wars and Taki Tachibana in Your Name, is excellent as Age (pronounced Eiji), a high school student on Aiga, the surface world, who dreams of flying and befriends the titular Patema and sets out to rescue her after the fascist government captures her. Cassandra Lee Morris, who many will remember as Amy in Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, is also excellent as Patema, the princess of an underground world also placed under restriction upon restriction and often explores the "danger zone." Robbie Daymond, who many will remember as Shoya Ishida in A Silent Voice, is also rock-solid as Porta, who lives in the same world as Patema, while Richard Epcar is appropriately sinister and "Eeeevil!" as Izamura, Aiga's dictator who doesn't care who he has to kill to keep the truth buried, in quite the departure from his turn as Batou in Ghost in the Shell. Funnily enough, there's also Audrey Burne (and Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon) herself Stephanie Sheh as Kaho, a character implied to have a thing for Age. Why is this notable, you ask? Because Sheh would later voice Mitsuha Miyamizu in, you guessed it, Your Name. Everyone else is also solid and the dub script is completely natural. All in all, this is one blind buy I don't regret and I can see myself rewatching it many times in the future for sure.

Ready or Not is a pretty good movie, it's what you would consider a "fun" film but it misses the mark as a comedy (because it under-serves the ensemble) and it doesn't quite manage to get the horror right (You're Next did it much better). Samara Weaving is very talented and has a bright future

It's based on a children's book series aimed at kids aged 9-12, so I figured the film wasn't intending to be rated higher than that, otherwise it would be excluding the source material's target audience. If it's pushing the PG-13 rating though, that would be a pleasant surprise for me.

If the truth be told, the best thing about this movie is the production values...this is a comic book movie that REALLY looks like a comic book movie. It won richly deserved Oscars for art direction/set direction, some INCREDIBLE makeup and for Stephen Sondheim's song "Sooner or Later", effectively crooned by Madonna playing femme fatale Breathless Mahoney (best character name ever). Warren Beatty's attention to detail, particular his eye for color, actually rivals Vincente Minnelli. This movie is absolutely GORGEOUS to look at and has a fun story to boot. Beatty underplays as the square-jawed hero and lets his all-star cast shine, led by Al Pacino in his Oscar-nominated performance as Big Boy Caprice.

You'd think the muppets that later went after the big monkey might have learned summat from this
Wonderful film, and very exciting. There were phenomenal stop motion special effects from Willis O'Brien, who went on to do King Kong.

From the top 100 passions list and as a love story it's not bad. It's a decent watch that would offend some of the tight asses of today. Hard to tell how good an actor Rudolph Valentino was, but no denying his star power. Strange musical score that ended up being a positive.

Yeah, most of them are fab, the only one that really doesn't look that good imo is the pterodactyl so it's a little bit of a shame it's the first one on screen.

a french women and a american man fall in love in the city of porto
a love story made using visual story telling in divided sections
each section the view of each lover, the last section there collective view
the photography is oh my god, shocking this is the first international movie in porto
the light in this city is unique and perfect to make any kind of motion picture
the architecture is so much beautiful, i fell blessed i can contemplate it everyday
not trying to over brag porto because i live there, but his beauty is perfection for me
such beauty could only be compared to the beauty of the actress it cast, i'm in love
the cinematography is very good, nothing else could be expected with jim jarmush
one of the last anton yelchin, so tragic, and indeed resonated with the character

Thought it started a bit slow so I wasn't giving it my total attention. The longer I had it on the more engrossing it became until I was completely caught up in it. Aside from the slowish start the only other knock against it is listening to Donald struggle with Italian in a couple scenes. That was painful.

As usual, Mads was good without having to say much of anything. Cinematography was also good if you like a lot of white landscapes (which I do). Story was a bit ordinary - it felt like it took a bunch of ideas from other movies and pasted them together.

Chappelle's stand-up pales in comparison to his sketchwork. I've never been a big fan. He's like a power-hitter in baseball, for every home-run, he strikes out a lot more.
I watched this last night and got a chuckle or two, which is standard fare for any special imb. The reverence he gets is a bit much.

From the Ebert list and a very heavy movie for it's time. Lillian Gish plays a brute's daughter and suffers abuse in scenes that are terrifying. She is befriended and cared for by a "yellow man". It's a powerful film. Sometimes when white actors play non-white characters it can be distracting, sometimes not. In this case it was the former and that may be why I'm not totally in love with it. Another old film that would be condemned as offensive if it came out today. Of course I just laugh at that stuff. And was D. W. Griffith a narcissist? I've noticed in more than one of his movie his initials on the title cards. Just something I noticed.

Shadows: Dutch Schlitz's Shoes (TV, 1975) – 8/10
Bonkers, this one. Nice to hear Valentine Dyall doing the introductory voice over, with his Secret Army colleague Ron Pember appearing early on.
I expected great things from this episode because Russell Hunter was involved and I was riveted by him as soon as his character, Mr Stabs, made his entrance. I wasn't aware of the amount of power he had in his voice until I saw this, and what he's doing is actually very Shakespearean, particularly because of the poetry that Stabs' spells are cast in. This has opened up a can of worms too, because I've found out that he'd played the character before, in the series Ace of Wands (1971), but apparently the episode no longer survives (this is a familiar euphemism to cover it having been incinerated or taped over by the TV channel that owned it). The Mr Stabs character was later revived in Dramarama (1984), this time played by David Jason, with David Rappaport as his sidekick, Luko.
The Luko character seen in this Shadows episode, played by Kenneth Caswell, is now inadvertently very funny. This is because his voice and appearance exactly call to mind Russell Brand, born the year it was made :). Also, the dialogue shows that Luko is clearly meant to be a dwarf (hence David Rappaport's casting mentioned above) but here Caswell looks taller than Russell Hunter and is trying his best to crumple himself up — Patrick Troughton supposedly achieved this when he was playing Quilp in The Old Curiosity Shop. There was also a notice before the episode screened, on the UK channel Talking Pictures TV, mentioning the outdated language and attitudes present in the production, and the various slights about Luko's stature, including Stabs calling him a pygmy, were obviously the bone of contention. However, Stabs is an overtly evil, if comic, character and the idea of him having such views can't really be much of a surprise to anyone.
I've been conscious of a pattern with this series of two standard story ideas: time travel or possession. This episode appears to be diverting quite considerably from its predecessors but once again both elements come into play. I'm eager to see a clear break into new territory.

This is the third movie of the Nanoha fantasy/sci-fi anime franchise. I really like the aesthetic style of this franchise, it is all made by the same animation studio in Japan (Seven Arcs) which maintains aesthetic and narrative consistency. It is kinda like an animated version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but with girls main characters instead of men and that it takes itself more seriously (there are almost no jokes in these movies, in fact I cannot recall a joke here). I found the plot is a bit predictable by this point (it has many similarities with other Japanese plots) but the animation/direction/aesthetics are all very high quality suff. 3_5

I don't see anywhere that labels this as a noir, but that's exactly what it was as far as I'm concerned. It's the earliest I've seen and the first since I've been prepping for the Pre-30's Countdown. There were points that seemed like time was standing still, but otherwise it was a very good flick.

This movie is actually the second part of Reflection, its similar to Infinity War/Endgame in that sense. So it was unfair of me to rate the previous movie before this? Well, I gave separate ratings to the Lord of the Rings movies so... This gets to a very dramatic climax, in fact I almost cried in some parts. Although since it still has that self conscious reference to the children's genre it was inspired by nobody among the main characters died in the end, including the villain! Except a character that was terminally ill).

It's based on a children's book series aimed at kids aged 9-12, so I figured the film wasn't intending to be rated higher than that, otherwise it would be excluding the source material's target audience. If it's pushing the PG-13 rating though, that would be a pleasant surprise for me.
Oh yeah, I meant it in the way that it didn’t feel like a PG-13 movie at all. I could have seen this being Rated R to be honest.

'Happy as Lazarro' (2019)
https://www.newstatesman.com/sites/default/files/styles/cropped_article_image/public/blogs_2019/04/2019_14_film.jpg?itok=Q1LyZE4h
A haunting Italian fable / folk tale about a naive, simple young man with nothing but goodness running through his veins, and difficult to review without spoilers.
The film is beautifully shot on 16mm film and there are some wonderful images of rural Italy, especially the drone shots that double up as a helicopter. The casting in this film is impeccable, with the family of all ages played very well by actors that almost appear like accidental extras at some points.
The movie centres around a poor family working on a plantation in a time that isn't easy to put a stamp on, until a character with a mobile phone enters the picture. But this is purposefully done by Director Alice Rohrwacher - as time is a theme central to the film. There is a huge shift towards the middle of the film, which is best left unspoilt, and throughout, our naive, angel-like lead Lazarro seems at one with nature. There's a particular theme showing Lazarro as a wolf howling at the moon (and even one of the characters names literally translates as 'of the moon'. The symbolism, religious and otherwise is heavy. Biblical references are also heavily present, and the plot is almost a re-telling of one of the more famous religious stories.
There is a large dose of "magical realism" involved, and the subtext seems to hint that there are some good people are out there, but if something looks too good to be true - it probably is. Part social critique, part mystical tale telling. It also has something to say on capitalism and how economies shape people. It does end on a happy note, but it goes through some journey to get there.
