BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW (2010) PANOS COSMATOS
http://www.standbyformindcontrol.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/ScreenShot2014-09-24at10.20.49PM.png
This is definitively not a movie for everyone's taste. If you liked Enter the Void you might enjoy this one. You can see this is a Panos Cosmatos movie right away, is filled with references from another movies, it resemblances the horror/sci-fi B-movies from the 70's & 80's, everything was made to challenge conventions, it's purely made for sensory processing, it's visceral in every emotion and environment aspect, the story is simple and almost irrelevant like he likes it.
The movie takes place in the Arboria Institute in 1983 a foundation created by Dr. Mercurio Arboria in the 60's, where people could achieve enlightenment, awaking to a perpectual happiness. We have Dr. Barry Nyle, a enlisted in the experiment in the 60's that became the person in charge of the research department and is focus is a teenage girl named Elena that is kept in a room and never speaks a word. They have routine check-ups where he tries to arouse her emotions, which he controls by some kind of huge diamond-shaped light. During the movie we have a flashback to 1966, was more a cinematic acid trip, I can't express myself with words to say what I saw in that scene, was magnificent, it wouldn't do it's justice. It shows Dr. Barry Nyle submersing in some kind of black fluid and emerging gasping for air. Somehow he returned a maligne person, killing a crying women holding a newborn baby, Elena, which was also part of the experiment being submersed in the same fluid.
The point of the movie for me, besides all the visual, sensorial effects is the darkness and lightness that all of us have, without exception and they are manifested according to the environment we are in, but I have to watch it again.

Suspiria (2018)
Definitely enjoyed this, quite a lot actually but still left the screening a bit underwhelmed. Both Tilda Swinton and Chloe Grace Moretz could and should have been better and it did drag a little in parts, making me a tad bored. I really could have done without the political backdrop too but hey. The worst of it for me, was the make up! I thought Dr Josef looked especially awful, closely followed by Mother Markos.
Still, overall its really good to look at and the score by Thom Yorke is excellent. Kudos go to Dakota Johnson who is brilliant as Susie and some of the dance moves were enthralling.

I usually avoid cat-and-mouse movies, but I had a good source for this one. Even though it's 2.5 hours long, it's very well-directed with a good lead.

Night Of The Demons (1988)
Ten kids throw a party on Samhain night hosted by misfit Angela and her friend Suzanne (Linnea Quigley) at Hull house, a deserted mansion right next to the ole cemetery. Naive blonde Judy's the Final Girl-type, dressed as Alice in Wonderland, on a double-date with Jay and their friends Max and Frannie. When the radio's battery power dies, the dance party turns into a séance with a stiff cool breeze flowing through the bewitched house. Imaginative with a dash of camp, a twisted splatter-fest with pluses for sound design, grisly gore effects, and a crematorium finale. Great title, fine setup, with a modest follow-through keeps it from Homerun territory. A movie from a fun time. Party til you drop!

(although might be a 4 depending on my second viewing.)
A seemingly surface level rehash of past stories told in a profound manner.
Although it took a while to get going (like a lot), over time, it eventually evolved into something more deep and thematically rich. The last 18 minutes was simply amazing, especially in how well-directed it was. Bradley Cooper is superb in this.
Expect a lot of awards to fly in this film's direction.

Enemy (2013, Denis Villeneuve)
4
As is the case with Villeneuve's other film Arrival, the psychological/allegorical concept behind Enemy (loosely based on José Saramago's novel The Double) is really well done, but personally I enjoy this one a lot more. Some of the symbolism and nuances might escape you on first viewing, but once you crack it, it will all come together, and you will appreciate the idea even more. For myself I can say that the more it marinates in my mind, the more I'm intrigued by it.

Everything about Badlands is good except the cinematography, which is excellent. The thing with Malick is I love the way his movies look but there is something just a wee bit off for me about his films (pacing?). It's kind of weird but sitting here thinking about it I may have liked it more than I thought. There really isn't a bad scene in the movie and that chase near the end... very well done. Gonna let a little time pass by and give it another go.

Not too good but watchable. Ok, a group of kids go to a campground to compete in a race with the winner receiving a $5,000 college scholarship. It has a side story about an evil pesticide company dumping barrels of toxic waste in the park (it's gotta go somewhere) and that's where the undercover bear comes in to play. Oscar worthy stuff similar to Erin Brockovich. In between the plot developments and musical montages its just a bunch of goofy characters, ranging from pre-teen to octogenarian, doing what people do at campgrounds (hooking up, getting naked, getting haircuts, etc). I had this running in the background while I was doing something else and eventually ended up sitting down to finish it. It's that bad. Everything truly awful about the 80's is on full display (guys, we really used to wear THOSE shorts?). Stars Kim Meyers (Freddy's Revenge) and has a cameo so embarrassingly bad that it's hilarious.

Puzzle(2018)
Directed by Marc Turtletaub
Writers: Oren Moverman, Polly Mann
The story line is a catchy idea: a shy woman discovers her virtuoso talent at jigsaw puzzles, and finds happiness participating in major tournaments along with her competition partner. Instead, after carefully developing the set up, the woman abandons her family, both her partner and jigsaws, and travels to Canada to find herself.
Despite a wind up that was surely the result of confusion over how to end the film, the unusual story premise held one’s interest for most of the movie. The acting was first rate, featuring a patented performance by Kelly MacDonald. She has played this exact type of role before, and brings it home again here. Unfortunately her character, which transforms from a mousy housewife to a liberated woman in the space of about an hour, didn’t wash. The erratic narrative exceeded its triteness.
Irrfan Kahn crafted a convincing charismatic performance as a wealthy recently divorced puzzle nut who is delighted and ultimately attracted by MacDonald’s character. David Denman provided a well done, if thankless, role of MacDonald’s old-fashioned clueless husband.
The liberated housewife theme is a bit long in the tooth in the English speaking world. The story would play much better in the setting of a third world country. And in fact this production was a remake of an Argentinian film called Rompecabezas, written by Natalia Smirnoff.
Still, Puzzle is a serious effort, earnestly made, and is enjoyable for its interesting approach.

Hereditary
(Ari Aster)

I try my best not to go into a movie with expectations, but when a film garners rave reviews for being terrifying, unnerving and one of the year's best films, it's hard to not get somewhat excited. Nevertheless, I tampered my expectations and went in with an open mind. Hereditary lives up to those claims in my book while managing to take a look at deep depression when someone loses a loved one.
Annie has just lost her mother. Their relationship wasn't perfect and her mother kept some secrets, but she still feels remorse. Those secrets begin to manifest is strange ways, making Annie go a little crazy. Tragedy has struck her family her entire life and her current family doesn't know if she's just losing her mind or if there are more sinister forces at work.
It's hard to give a quick synopsis of this film without spoiling some key elements. Those key elements took me by surprise because I feel like the film set up some expectations and quickly diverted them to throw you into a weird sense of the unknown. When an accident happens in the first quarter of this film, I was shocked. From then on, I had no idea where this film was going and what dark path it was going to take me on to get there. I was game.
Stellar performance from Toni Collete, someone I'm usually lukewarm on at best. She deserves some sort of recognition for how she tackles depression and terror. The anchor to this whole film, which never really gives you the chance to be happy or feel joy. Everyone is simply depressed or scared. Alex Wolff plays her son and he feels like he is in a comatose state for most of the film. His tragedy is horrific and everyone deals with it in their own way, he becomes shut off from family, friends and basically life. Gabriel Byrne plays the father/husband role. He's probably given the least to work with, but his role to trying to keep the family together. There is a notion that men must stay strong for others in their time of need. Byrne does this, only letting his true emotions out when no one is around to see.
The script is strong and when looking back there are lots of little hints here and there to this families history. You don't think about it at first, but when everything plays it, those bits take on other meanings. Much like the film Get Out, this film takes pride in the small details that many people may miss. I like the choices Aster makes here, very focused and deliberate. The entire inside of the house was built on a sound stage so they could remove the walls and give the rooms a 'dollhouse' look. Very effective.
There are some elements that are obvious and thus the reveal at the end isn't as shocking, but as a whole, this film works on multiple levels. In the climax, the film tends to lean more towards traditional horror, but that was to be expected and it still unnerves in the right places.

I doubt it. The character is public domain so anyone can make a movie about him if they feel like it and there's always a chance that someone will try again once the memory of the last attempt has sufficiently faded. Patrick Willems made a good point about how movie execs seem to assume that characters like King Arthur or Robin Hood being known to the public means that there's an untapped fan base waiting for these characters to get their own superhero-style franchises. The fact of the matter is there's a difference between knowing a character exists and caring enough about them to put down money to see them - and most people seem to fall into the former category. It also doesn't help that the movies don't look too good in the first place.

Femme Fatale (2002) I enjoyed it like most of De Palma's movies, not his best work but it is suspenseful and had nice twists and turns and what you'd expect from his movies. Definitely a good erotic thriller. rating_3_5

Tried watching a couple of 1970s flicks with Charlton Heston last night:
The Omega Man (1971, Boris Sagal)
1.5
Turned it off after about 15 minutes. Terribly dated, annoying, corny 70s sci-fi with a needlessly intrusive, grating score. Just awful.
Soylent Green (1973, Richard Fleischer)
3
This was noticeably better, so much so that I was able to actually finish it. There's a noir-ish, investigative element to the story that at least kept my interest. The film does look dated but it also has some nice emotional moments, and the core anti-utopian message regarding the long-term effects of overpopulation, climate change and the growing, unfettered power of multi-national corporations is still very much relevant today.

A little late for Halloween, but... here it goes. This is one of my favorite horror movies, I rank it as equally good as The Exorcist. Those two images are my all time favorite scenes. The ending in this movie, cinematically speaking is fantastic, is almost poetic. With a tiny budget, Tobe Hooper made a masterpiece.

I think this was the first time I've seen this. With the way it started, it seemed like it was going to be a little cheap and corny, yet it was still effective. It was pretty easy to tell where it was going, but that's not the film's fault, but rather because of the movies that have come after it. I thought it was creepy and a bit surreal. I chose to watch the black and white version.

Asher (2018)
http://www.impawards.com/2018/posters/asher.jpg
This one is a slow-burner drama that's not going to appeal to everyone, hence the low rating on IMDb currently.
I, however, quite liked it. Asher is an aging hitman who lives an orderly and reclusive lifestyle, until he almost literally bumps into an attractive woman (Famke Janssen, who, in her early 50s, is stunning, and looks ten years younger), and decides to break from his routine and try pursuing her.
At the same time, the organization he belongs to is going through troubling upheavals.
Despite the fact that his career centers around violence and death, he is a likable character. Even though we aren't given much information on "why" he does what he does, I enjoyed being part of his "world," and didn't want the experience to end so soon, like when one spends time in the company of an old friend.
I think this story would have made a good TV show.
3.5
Mission impossible fallout 76
Don’t think this franchise has much more air. Tom cruise is really showing his age...he however looks tremendous for the age but is unconvincing as an action movie lead. Too much time was spent on him running, climbing, walking, talking. Would be better suited to a mentor role if the franchise continues, which I assume it will judging by the numbers.
As for the plot - A very standard ticking time bomb plot device pulled straight out of screen writing 101.
The best MI is still number one imo, second best is 4 which is goofy fun. This was really below average.

Cast and crew for a Giallo are getting butchered in this movie I had on my watchlist thanks to CiCi. With the exception of some 80's movies I first saw when they came out, I'm not a big fan of comedy mixed in with my horror. At the very least, I generally need the horror to far outweigh the humor. That's not the case here and so at first I didn't think I was going to like it. After some time it did win me over a bit. There are some funny moments and the gore effects are solid. It's also heavy on babes including the great Paz De La Huerta who is perhaps the greatest combination of hideous and hot the world has ever seen.

Called Terrified in the USA but that US Terrified movie poster looks ridiculous. Nobody in their right mind would watch a movie based off that poster. It has its faults but overall it's a pretty good ghost story. It borrows ideas from several recent movies, Insidious being the most obvious, but does everything a tad better. Biggest issue for me is the standard tall, lanky, creepy looking things as the ghost. I think that's been done to death and isn't terribly scary anymore. Thankfully the movie doesn't rely solely on these things for its scares. Has some nice creepiness throughout and a few well timed jump scares. Also, the ending could pose a problem if you like things to be all wrapped up nice and tidy.

Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
Broadens the scope of the Jason lore outside The Crystal Lake Camp setting, as Voorhees is dispatched to a morgue after his fatality in the barn at the end of Part 3. With Jimmy (Crispin Glover) and his funnier-than-he-rightfully-should-be friend Ted, there's some gratifying character play. They're set against a few tag-alongs, a pair of twins, and a neighboring family they meet on their trip into Friday Land Woods. The story has a lot more elements at play in that sense than prior installments. There's wisecracks thanks to the Jimmy-Ted banter, some family-fare with the addition of young Corey Feldman a year before The Goonies, Tom Savini gore FX and memorable kill sequences particularly with Crispin Glover's celebration attempt with a wine corkscrew and Ted's stabbing through a projector screen as Jason disturbs a late-night viewing of silly old black & white nude films. The side stories are some unmistakable schlock though. It's mucked up, but there's a movie I enjoy in here with the right slash-cutting editor.

I always tell my wife that 50's and 60's Japanese cinema is amazing, but then I got a couple of DVDs I hadn't seen to show her and they turned out to be duds. I decided to be sure and get something I had already seen, and it worked because she also thought this was great. It's so unique and brilliantly showcases a whole other way of life. I think it's one of the best movies about jealousy, animalistic lust, and Karma, and it has one of my favorite musical scores. I was originally going to nominate it for the Horror HOF but changed it to something else, and that brings about my dilemma in regards to the upcoming horror countdown. IMDb labels it as part horror, thus making it eligible for the countdown. However, I don't think it's a horror movie so I don't think I can vote for it. Can someone convince me that it is?

A story of a veteran with PTSD living with his 13-years-old daughter in a tent somewhere around the urban park in Portland, Oregon living in the wilderness, eating mushrooms, playing chess and reading literature. His daughter was spotted which leaded to there arrest. They are offered a house, clothing, food and a job for there inclusion in our current system.
I don't think independent movies are getting better, I just think the big budget competition is aiming at a bad thought crowd. This movie is my kind of movie, because I'm a searcher, I'm searching for something I don't have, I'm searching for whatever the opposite of bull**** is and I think this movie was near that opposite.
This began by being a very minimalistic movie, the emotional more dramatic acting were very well balanced, the relationship father and daughter taking in consideration the environment was near perfection, no arguing, full understanding, ability to share and depend one another. Most of the success comes, I think, from the ways of communication they adopted for the movie and how they captured there intimacy.

He has these nightmares or hallucinations, I'm not sure exactly, and then hires a beautiful secretary to help him with his task. Suddenly the violence starts Omg! I thought this movie, surprisingly, was made pretty well and had decent performances. The problem, as is the case with many movies of this type, is that there's not much to watch between the good stuff. Still, it was decent enough and the last 20 minutes were very good.

This was the most favorable look I've had at Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter. The blemish I experienced, after the opening setup sequence, was that Jason's presence seemed shoehorned in and random at times. A give-and-take from focusing more on the teenagers- which also made the film appealing in a different way.
Sometimes I figure people will deduce what I'm getting at without having to say it, I've gotta get better at communicating in this format.

Need to see this, sounds like a real curio. Fiona Richmond!!! :)
BlacKkKlansman (2018)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d5/BlacKkKlansman.png
Pretty good, Washington is good and Driver is excellent. Funny in parts and serious in others, the most affecting part for me (strangely, for the subject matter/story) is the Driver storyline. Solid film from Lee that couldn't resist some "America First" goading but, hell, I'm a Brit so I took it at face value. The Harry Belafonte scene is heartbreaking. 7/10

The Dead Nation (2017) by Radu Jude
As a former history student, who dived into the Eastern European history after WW2, this was a very interesting watch. Despite the difficulty of the subject matter, dealing with antisemitism in Rumania, I thought it was told in a very engaging and thoughtful way.
This photo documentary might only be for the history nerds or Rumanians, but i would consider it a go if your inclined to understand and reflect on the horrors of the second world war.

The Forest for the Trees (2003) by Maren Ade
In recent years i have both seen Toni Erdmann and Alle Anderen by Maren Ade and loved both of them, with Alle Anderen being the Magnus Opus imo. Yesterday we watched her debut feature The Forest for the Trees which seemed like a TV-movie. Production wise it might not be the best, but the story and character depiction and development, where with key feature signs of Maren Ade. The whole lonesome primary school teacher in the suburbs, might be a used trope within cinema, but it still worked quite well.
For fans of Toni Erdman (2016)

Transit (2018) by Christian Petzold
For the time being i consider Petzold the best director in Germany with Phoenix being his masterpiece. Transit is a really good movie and reflection on the transitory being as a refugee. As it is, it is a really abstract films which deals with the transitory elements of being a refugee. The narrative shifts gear throughout the films, which makes it a rather difficult but interesting watch. Im very keen on reading the book it was based on and you could feel the literary inspiration in the manuscript.

Pretty enjoyable since I don't really have much time fro these types of movies, no real shocks in the storyline. Got a bit mixed up at the are they related etc as this is supposed to be the true sequel to the original but in the end it doesn't really matter. Carpenters soundtrack (or just theme) still packs a punch 7/10.

McQueen (2018)
McQueen is a well done documentary. I'd never heard of the Brit designer Alexander McQueen, although haute couture is not one of my interests. McQueen is quite a contrast to the recent Phantom Thread, with designer McQueen's forte being the new, fresh, or avant-garde; along with a chaotic lifestyle.
Dress design and its milieu as expressed in the various fashion houses is a whole world unto itself, with financial reward obtainable only by the top names, leaving the workers and models to be satisfied simply with the art of it. In that regard it reminds me of the music business..http://www.onepocket.org/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Alexander McQueen came to a sad end of his own making. But the film about his career was fresh, and it held one's interest.Doc's rating: 6/10

Really adored the dialogue, cinematography, acting, and direction. Lakeith Stanfield made this film, and turned an audience surrogate character into so much more through his amazing performance. Also, absolutely loved the twist - for I have not laughed so hard in my entire life (mostly at the surface-level idea of this metaphor being in a major motion picture), and not in a bad way. Pretty ambitious storytelling.
Which brings me to all the themes and symbolism, which all seemed to be blatantly on the noise. What was the overall message here? There were several. But if you had to narrow it down: I'm pretty sure it was anti-capitalist (in a sense).
Also, I don't believe in the notion that you have to discarded your black identity in pursuit of profit. That struggle to get by, anxiously waiting for when your next paycheck comes around: applies to literally everyone who's trying their damnedest to make a living, including myself. I understand that it's an extremely tough world. And poverty passed down through generations shouldn't result in more generations being in poverty, as there's ways to prevent that by getting ahead in life - due to your choices and work ethic. If you still manage to be a screw up despite all that, then I don't know what to tell you. It's definitely not white privilege. There's honestly more of an upper-class privilege if anything (even then, some people screw up in that realm).
I dunno, maybe It's just that I'm not black (even though I grew up with divorced parents, one of which was a sexual deviant/criminal, and the other a clinically-depressed alcoholic with rather low income). Bottom line, I hope it's not telling black people that their own problems are because of white people at the top of the food chain who try to suppress their blackness, while also trying to appropriate it by picking and choosing what they like and don’t like about said culture (I.E; the "n*gga sh*t” scene). Doesn't take away from any of the incredibly competent filmmaking, though. But please movie, continue talking about systematic racism, how we try to make black people white, etc. Just kidding.
>Be film
>Capitalism is evil!
>Rise up against evil oppressive privileged whites!
>Seize the means of production!
>Crush white oppressors with violence!
>That will be $9.50. We hope you enjoy your film and thank you for your business. Refreshments are available. Please turn your phone to silent and enjoy the film!
Haha, just kidding. But I'm not wrong, am I? Just kidding about that too.
Also, Tessa Thompson is my waifu. For I, a lonely incel, have claimed her. And any MoFo willing to take her from me shall face the wrath of my Stormbreaker.

Great acting (I expect nothing less from Ben Foster) and an impressive storyline. Its about a father with PTSD and how he is capable of maintaining a loving and nurturing relationship with his daughter in isolation but when faced with normal rules, not really interactions, panics. Both leads were exceptional and the pacing and dialogue were perfect. Ben Foster nailed it on this man. Great to see Dale Dickey pop up too...she looks younger than in "Winters bone" :) 9/10

Time To Take On Some HAMMER STUDIO VAMPIRES
The Vampire Lovers (1970)
A British Horror film set in the 18th century Bavarian woods, starring a certain dazzling countess (http://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F_96uP6vDZMT8%2FTI4mkmR7XsI%2FAAAAAAAAUA0%2F5_1KxodH5OA%2Fs1600%2 FVAMPIRE%2BLOVERS4.jpg&f=1) as the flesh-devouring Marcilla, Peter Cushing as General Von Spielsdorf, and a drove of ridiculously attractive women seduced by Ingrid Pitt's bewitching vampire. She uses a clever mixture of attack, visiting the dreams of her targets she is more fond of as a big gray seductive cat-wolf, while using more direct methods of ATTACK for more disposable casualties. Set against Marcilla and her steadily growing company of vampires, are the vampire hunter Baron Hartog- poised to avenge the demise of his sister, and the grieved-over-his-slain-daughter, General Peter Cushing. A craftily arranged battle follows as the intelligently sexual vampire beings encounter the forces of good arraigned against them. Some insanely erotic scenes as well as Ingrid Pitt rinses her bare physique in a powder room bath. Hammer gets the vampire hunters right as well by refraining from making them too action-hero, while maintaing the stake through the heart or decapitation vampire lore. Somewhat old-fashioned, yet superb solid-seven of a film.

Twins Of Evil (1971)
Two orphaned twins played by Playboy centerfold models Mary and Madeleine Collinson, move to the German village of Karnstein to live with their Uncle Gustav (Peter Cushing). In old Gothic Europe, they had two burning passions. Cushing plays a sincere yet fanatical puritan devoted to a life of witch-hunting with his fellow men in the community known as the "Brotherhood." While high up in an old castle on a mountain, the wicked Count Karnstein engages in witchcraft, protected from incarceration from his royal aristocratic connections. Frieda, the wicked of the two twins, more than anything else, wants to meet Count Karnstein, while Maria wishes to remain faithful to her Uncle. They look alike, they dress alike, two identical beauties, mystifying the Brotherhood hunters of witches. Enchanting Hammer Double-Feature into the Mystical Germanic woods.

The Forest For The Trees - 8/10
Thanks Tokeza and Stirchley... It's been about a year since I've given an 8/10 to a movie made in my lifetime. This was very good, and as I suspected, just one look at the photograph when I was browsing yesterday totally grabbed me. Before I read a single word!
The world needs more Melanie, and less Tina.... Original. In a way, Melanie was a little condescending towards the only guy she could somewhat confide in, but not the way Tina was.. Maybe this is life - people and their hierarchies of worth after an examination of their pros and cons, etc.
I tried looking for Eve Lobau and the only thing I found was a porno! If anyone knows anything she starred in, let me know, I'd only be watching it for her.
I agree with Tokeza, the kind of camera used, and the shakiness. I like it as a tool, but not the entire way through - it just makes me kinda nauseous.

This is one of the best romantic movies I've ever saw, though, I didn't yet watched a lot of them, at least, script-wise is gorgeous, the content is great. This is a story about how your attraction to someones personality, life-style, life philosophies and general behavior can lead you to a weird kind of glorification to a point where you share there opinions without questioning. This movie lead this to a extreme case: love. If someone you idolaters doesn't like someone that you deeply enjoy can you accept your own perspective without insecurities?

I Only Want You to Love Me - 7.5/10
I guess I only saw the first half a few year ago; must have got sick from the consumer fetishism. But I liked it today after I was reading old IMDB individual movie threads on "The Forest For The Trees" and someone said this movie was similar, and I had just gotten it, so with a handful to choose from, I went with this. Would have preferred a linear chronology.

Very interesting idea, with cool style and visuals — lots of repetition, dull dialogues, vague characters, the voice-over sucks, lots of misplaced scenes, bad acted (not James Franco, he was good).

The Wild Boys (2018)
From the moment it began until it ended+ I was spellbound. Magical, harsh, profane and profound. A nebulous journey that made me feel like I was high while I was being immersed into the phantasmagorical reality of the characters.
I almost want to re-watch it soon, but at the same time I don't want to ever view it again, so it can remain an ephemeral, quixotic, dream-like experience.

When I heard that this was shot for 60 grand in six days I was expecting an Ed Wood type production. Now it's not very good film but it isn't quite up to Woods' standards. The wooden acting creates a few chuckles and there's a song and dance number about halfway through that is awfully good. As for the story it's pretty familiar - Dr. Frank "don't call me Frankenstein" creates monster - monster bad - destroy monster. At least it wasn't terribly boring.

Of all the Marvel movies I think the Ant Man films are the most fun. I love the miniature fight scenes especially when they pull back to show all the destruction. Rudds dopiness gets annoying at times but The ExCon guys, especially Michael Peña, crack me up. Goofy-fun

I don't usually watch X rated movies (BFBC) but I usually don't come across X rated movies in the Jungles streaming library. Not wanting to be a prude I decided to give it a go. Like the poster says it borrows heavily from the first half of A Clockwork Orange right down to the costumes. So a bunch of Dr.'s decide to treat four mental patients with some Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (must've been the brown batch - bad idea), naturally they escape, proceed to go bonkers and terrorize a group of schoolgirls boarding in the countryside. It's actually a pretty grimy, icky film and not very enjoyable. Features a young Lisa Vanderpump. I have no idea who she is but was told by someone who has terrible taste in TV that she's a Real Housewife.

I have been wanting to see this for a long time but didn't want to see it on a tiny tv screen. Now that our "movie room" is finished enough to use I finally got around to this plus I needed to cleanse myself after Killer's Moon. Not much to say that hasn't already been said. It's one of the great films of the Golden Era. Chariot race lived up to the hype and overall it's a very, very good film. If you have 3.5 hours laying around I highly recommend this.

Three Identical Strangers (2018)
If you haven't yet seen Three Identical Strangers documentary (RAW Productions - 2018), you're in for a treat. The initial story concerns 3 identical twins, separated at birth in New York and adopted by different families, who find each other completely by accident when they were aged 19. The initial story details their amazing reunion and the tremendous international publicity which followed.
That's interesting enough, but then the tale takes several dark turns, which moves the narrative from a simple amazing feel-good piece into areas that are stunning and thought provoking. There is plenty of archival footage along with interviews with all parties involved.
It has gotten to where the percentage of good documentaries to poor ones is at an exponentially higher ratio than in fictional films. "Strangers" is a great example. It's reportedly available on Hulu, from libraries, and of course by DVD purchase. It's also on the streaming services. CNN TV was one of the distributors, so perhaps they'll be showing it as well.
Doc's rating: 8/10

Good low-budget thriller with a lot of "Taggart" actors to see (in-joke for the Scots here:p), overall its pretty predictable. I was just glad to not see a "Its all a stag do!" type reveal. I found it competent but it never got the tension up to where I was desperate to find the outcome. 5/10.

This is a movie about the transformation of a family man into a stone cold prison gangster. Jacob Harlon, a sock broker with a wife and son is arrested for a deadly DUI car accident. His sentenced and incarcerated in Chino with the "big boys" where he had to welcome the worst in him to survive.
This is without any questions, one of the best, not one, the best prison movie I've ever saw. At first you think you got the movie all figured out, but the story telling and cast performance, especially Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau that changed dramatically his persona to make this movie, which is actually the point of the movie itself make you want to watch it all. This might be one of the most realistic perspectives of the United States correctional facilities, and that caught people attention.

This was so good, and it's going to be a major awards threat. I'm a little surprised at the category classification of the actresses because it's really an ensemble and they should either all be supporting or leads. Also a little disappointed we couldn't get Hugh Grant to play the duke of Marlborough so we could have a full About a Boy reunion.
Basically it's a dark comedy about court in Queen Anne's reign. Anne is a sad figure crippled with gout and being heavily influenced by the Tory's and Whigs living with her childhood friend (Rachel Weitz). When Rachel's cousin comes along looking for work she steadily climbs the ladder in court till she becomes a rival of Churchill.
This is peak Emma Stone which is a shock for me because I've never really been sold on her. The film is as beautiful as a Yorgo Lathimos film typically is but it's also hilarious and fairly grounded. Their is a twist in the second act that completely turns the story
This is peak Emma Stone
I know, right? I thought all three were equally great and as a trio stole the show, but Emma Stone especially seemed to be having fun with her role.

What are the odds that they'll split the Supporting Actress vote and it'll go to Amy Adams or some sh*t?
Would definitely be a big snub if all three weren't nominated, but an even bigger snub if none of them were nominated (unlikely, especially for Colman). That said I wouldn't put it past the Oscars to be stupid about it.
What are the odds that they'll split the Supporting Actress vote and it'll go to Amy Adams or some sh*t?
Pretty high as they are both Oscar winners and Amy would be on her sixth nom.
What we could end up seeing is, if the Academy doesn't want to give Cooper three Oscars Lanthimos might get the director win.
But it's likely going to go to Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk

There's a bunch of movies I haven't gotten around to talking about here so I'll do them all at once.
Yojimbo(1961) - 76/100 - An actual badass protag! And in a japanese movie, no less! No joke, I was legitimately surprised.
Rush(2013) - 93/100 - Just a slamdunk in every aspect.
Drive(2011) - 88/100 - A decent story told in top-notch style. Ryan Gosling fits the protag perfectly.
Fantasia(1940) - 70/100 - Bits were fascinating, bits were mediocre, bits were too sappy, but that bit with the soundtrack was genius.
Leviathan(2014) - 82/100 - It has its dull parts but it's very honest and human, and I respect that.
The Zero Theorem(2015) - 65/100 - Not a good movie as much as an interesting one. Give it a shot but I wouldn't blame you if you hated it.

The entire English dub is on YouTube (it's managed to stay for two years because of the random name the uploader used), so I decided to go ahead and watch it, especially since I'm already a big fan of Trigun to begin with. It doesn't disappoint. There are lots of laughs to be had and the whizz-bang action never fails to excite; like the series it follows up, it doesn't take itself too seriously. Johnny Yong Bosch is, as he was in the series, excellent as Vash the Stampede, the man with a huge bounty on his head who is constantly blamed for things that aren't his fault. Yong Bosch plays the Humanoid Typhoon exactly as he did in the series, the character fitting him like a glove he never took off. All the rest are great, too, even the new guy who does Wolfwood this time around. What's really surprising here, though, is newcomers Luci Christian and Trina Nishimura as the insurance girls, Meryl Strife and Milly Thompson in that they sound just like Dorothy Elias-Fahn and Lia Sargent who dubbed them in the series. Seriously, I didn't even know they were new until I read the credits. Overall, a whole lot of fun and I will certainly be coming back to it in the future. Later, guys.

MEDITATION, CREATIVITY, PEACE (2012) DAVID LYNCH
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hwd5cFlr9FQ/VR6ZWdtT9BI/AAAAAAAACkw/Li1Ob28v9hc/s1600/david.lynch.documentary.meditation.creativity.peace.jpg
Funny, I was not aware of this Transcendental meditation technique created by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 50's, some say is being practiced for 5000-6000 years. I did a little research, guess this practice belong to a institute now that charges $2000 to learn the basics and $10000 for advanced techniques, guess they lost me there, I'll keep my Alan Watts simplistic meditation. Now I know the reason why so many business & TV celebrities doing this meditation, paying for a super power they might think.
You don't need to be a fan of meditation to watch this documentary, David Lynch perspectives about various subjects, from art to his creative process are wonderful to watch, a person with a very clear and gestural form of communication, I adore it. I think is fairly common for questioners and "developed minds" to try to achieve a spiritual answer to our existence, they do it sooner or later, David fond in TM some kind of answer.
P.S. He didn't answered the mystery of how me made Eraserhead baby.
P.S.2 If you're interested in TM and don't want to give money to some foundation, the best material is in here (http://minet.org/Documents/TM-FAQ), here (http://minet.org/mantras.html) and here (http://minet.org/checktoc.html).
P.S.3 Many studies (the movement has tried to suppress) have found that approximately 40% of the people who practice TM develop adverse effects. This meditation consists in memorizing a mantra, a word like "Mike" and repeating it in your head, it becomes subconscious, you will be more tranquilized (like masturbation or a very hot bath) that's a fact, but this is also a drug, you will get addicted and you will become addicted to thought. It's like cannabis, you can become addicted when you prefer the state of stoned to the state of real life.

Connery bond. Haven’t seen other Connery entries in some time other than goldfinger which is special. This is a silly one but it’s good fun. Has a lot of charm but nothing to take seriously. Reminded me of a Roger Moore Bond, maybe Connery should be given credit for starting that era.
Plot is diamonds, smuggler, mystery type then goes full maniacal villain and world domination Austin power dr evil plot. Worth watching for fun.

ENOUGH SAID (2013) NICOLE HOLOFCENER
This is one of the best romantic movies I've ever saw, though, I didn't yet watched a lot of them, at least, script-wise is gorgeous, the content is great. This is a story about how your attraction to someones personality, life-style, life philosophies and general behavior can lead you to a weird kind of glorification to a point where you share there opinions without questioning. This movie lead this to a extreme case: love. If someone you idolaters doesn't like someone that you deeply enjoy can you accept your own perspective without insecurities?
'Preciate the suggestion. This is an enjoyable PG-13 film. It's a "chick flick" to be sure, but the chemistry between James Gandolphini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus is very good.
Louis-Dreyfus can portray a wide range of emotions, and can easily slip into comedy. Enough Said is a well done adult-themed comedy with a gratifying ending.

Haven't seen this since I was a lad and managed to record it the other night. It's held up really well. The foreboding and malevolent tone of the film is spot on. The townspeople caught between the need for the potent stranger and a want to get rid of him and their dirty secret forever. The music (when it comes to Jefferey Lewis' bunch of ne'er do wells) is funky and spaced out. It ages but enhances the movie. Some wooden acting aside a great film.

On the plus side, Hellboy is a very cool character and Ron Perlman was a great choice to play him. It was alright.

Edit: okay, never mind, I don’t feel like leaving this as a single phrase post. There’s much value in trying to properly capture the dread of the moment and films this year, from something like First Reformed to the freakin’ Avengers, have done their part. But this movie is similarly vital. Arguably more so, less we grow numb.
“We’re still here.”
I just needed to hear those words in my language.

Was on telly last night, so I recorded it.
Ghostbusters (2016)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/Ghostbusters_2016_film_poster.png
The first 10 minutes has not 1, not 2, not, 3... but 5 jokes about Wonton Soup, and... drum roll for the amazing writing.......... a fart gag.
The rest of the film is sporadic Wonton Soup gags, jokes about lady-parts, aiming the proton-beams at male-ghost groins, and an unhealthy amount of disguised misandry.
What I mean is... every single male character is either dumb and/or incompetent, or they're evil and/or misogynistic... but is played as "part of the humour".
Disguised misandry. Awesome.
Now, as much as I loved the cartoon as a kid, this movie feels like a live action version of the cartoon.
All 4 of the lead-characters is a comic relief, all 4 of the lead-characters is slapstick, all 4 of the lead-characters is also a brilliant scientist... all at the same time.
For a comedy movie about ghosts... ultimately it's just unfunny and soulless.
That's 2 hours I'm not getting back :( Still though, glad I waited for it to appear for free on telly.
I think the only reason I'd suggest watching this... is if you want to see exactly why Ghostbusters 2 was actually a masterpiece.
Gonna say something I never thought I'd say... but even the RoboCop remake was better than this.

Yeah yeah, and the only female characters of any significance across both of the original movies are a possessed damsel and a shrewish secretary so they're clearly misogynistic (never mind the ghost blowjob). Maybe the reason I liked the remake as much as I did is because the original set such easy-to-meet standards.
The Muppet Christmas Carol - 3
Speaking of likeable ghost movies...
The Rodent
12-16-18, 08:17 AM
Sure the women in the original could be said to be stereotyped, but at least the original wasn't actually going for that tone purposely.
I mean... Dana Barrett's involvement as a damsel in distress, was as a love interest for Venkman.
She was also given a stronger characterisation in the sequel as a protective mother to Oscar... and she gives Venkman a hard time as well and stands her ground more than once.
As for the shrewish secretary in the original.
I actually found Janine a strong character who had attitude and the balls to stand up to the male characters.
She was changed a lot in the sequel to match the cartoon but she's still likeable and funny, especially when she gets broody while babysitting with Louis.
---
Chris Hemsworth in the remake, was dumb and stupid, for the sake of making a male character dumb and stupid.
Like all of the other male characters, they were given that treatment for the sake of it.
Look at every female character in the remake. They're all strong characters, no exceptions.
But, the male characters = Dumb and stupid, or, evil and misogynistic... and again, there's no exceptions.
Iroquois
12-16-18, 08:57 AM
I did think it was a nice touch that Hemsworth was the only quote-unquote stupid man in the movie and even then he was still consistently nicer to the Ghostbusters than literally any other man in the movie, as if to suggest that if a complete idiot like him could still avoid being a dick then there's no excuse for the smart ones (thus making a point of distinguishing between one's intelligence and one's capacity for bigotry, which was only driven home by the villain being a human mad scientist). If nothing else, there's a little more to it than "disguised misandry".
The Snowman - 3

I've seen this mentioned on MOFO a few times and it's been on my watchlist for a long time but I just got around to watching last night. The acting is a little hammy but the story is good. This one had the potential to be a masterpiece. It has a fabulous score, an intriguing script with subtle suspense, and is beautifully shot, but it falls short, maybe because the protagonist has such a cold and even sociopathic personality. He seems like an automaton going through the motions of what he thinks he should do, without possessing any real values or ideals of his own - and so he is only too ready to throw people under the bus, disregarding any emotional ties they have to him or others.

COME AND SEE / IDI I SMOTRI (1985) ELEM KLIMOV
https://umfilmeumdia.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/idi-i-smotri.jpg?w=1191
Two young boys playing the war, one is the evil German soldier, the other is just hiding. While they are playing they are also searching for guns. One of them found a gun on a old trench fully covered with sand. He was now capable of fighting the war. The rest is pure ... horrifying transformation of humbleness into madness.
What makes this movie so different from all the others of the genre, at least for me personally, is that is propaganda free and I don't see the director's attempt of inviting a emotion he wants on the viewers, you don't see a button, and I love that. In this movie you experience a large panoply of emotions, from comedy, to fear, to horror most of them captured from a face to face angle that is almost hypnotizing, is the horror looking you in the face, come and see. The explosion scenes are magnificent, I've never saw anything so good, I was astonished how could they make something like that with there budget.
I've said before this is the best movie of the genre, that was a little over the top because I consider La vita è bella a creative masterpiece, but this one comes close. Horrifying, terrifying, hypnotizing, visceral masterpiece. If anyone ever ask me what I think war is, I will just say: Come and See.

Good movie...
This is a hell of a hyped movie. Lav Dias and Bela Tarr are being doing this kind of cinema for years. Now come this Cuarón, who can't develop his characters right, and still all the merits. It isn't nothing new.

That's a very nice Christmas short film; a feel good spiritual message that has fallen out of vogue.
It's interesting that J. Carrol Naish, who played the Italian motel/diner owner, was in fact an Irishman from NYC. He was a very busy character actor who played many races and dialects...... except for IRISH..:)
Nice pick.

Great Hammer Horror occult film that trades on subtlety and atmosphere rather than shocks. Christopher Lee great as the Duc de Richleau in, what i believe, was one of his favourite roles. It chunters along at a fair pace and keeps the viewer engaged throughout. Its hammer but plotted well (more than most) and a really good watch, 8/10.

I loved the premise of people being stuck on a train during a zombie outbreak. It's exciting with strong characters. What keeps it from being a favorite is that it's a little tame. The most disturbing aspect is how the unaffected turn on each other for self-preservation. An American remake is planned, and I will be interested. With any luck, it'll be a little more nasty.

I felt so terrible for the man who had thought of him as a friend. He (the friend) was so helpless... I probably would have rated the film higher if it wasn't for that and what happened to the woman before as well.
There are some films about sociopaths that are quite good, and even when they betray people it still works with the story as a whole, because either we could have seen it coming, or it felt like some kind of redemptive twist, or furthered the plot to show how brutal the person was when they were going for what they wanted, but this wasn't really any of those. Simply cowardice, like you say. A corporate spy drone.

The industry created superheros to fulfill a market demand, and that demand was emotional. They've made all sorts of superheros, but this one was specially thought for the perspective I believe most people have of our current society, that is a more weirder, sicker and horrifying place every day that passes. This superhero was made for that perspective but especially for those who've experienced abuses. This is a movie about a multiple personality disorder "thing", is not a person because it can be a beast, is not a individual because he have 24 different identities on the same body/mind, I think the right personification could be something that can experience various egos. This double identities were created as a gateway to escape the trama of his childhood years and the constant abuses. The beast, the strongest of all the alter-egos is awaken to show to the impures, those who've never suffered from abuses, how perfect those who've suffered are. Really honestly, if you see this script and the movie point from a distance is a pure comedy, but overall is very fun movie to watch. The main actor made a fine performance as you might guess for someone that have to play so many different identities, when he plays a more, lets say feminine persona (Patricia) is really something special. I've always liked James McAvoy and now I have another reason to. I'll watch Mr. Glass for sure.
