This was just another movie on my 30's watchlist that I didn't know anything about. After watching it, I figure it's got to be a beloved classic. Frank Capra directs Gary Cooper as a small town guy who inherits 20 million bucks from a relative he didn't even know. He's whisked out to NYC so the vultures can take advantage. Everyone in the big city wants a piece from the simpleton, but it turns out that he's no fool. He shows what it's all about to be a good man. Funny and heartwarming with everyone involved at the top of their game.

Thanks for the "It didn't 't seem 3 hours long" comment... I think Visconti is my 2nd favorite Italian director after De Sica.

Think Bottle Rockets meets Bully, a group of college kids decide to rob the Library. It's a docu-drama-comedy, really the film is an exercise in postmodernism and it works really well.

Alien: Covenant

(Ridley Scott)

Usually when the original director comes back to a series, it marks either a downturn in their career or a return to form for the films. As mediocre as the Resident Evil films are, when Paul W.S. Anderson came back to the series, Iroquois fell in love with it again. There are rumblings of James Cameron maybe tackling Terminator also. The Alien franchise has seen a lot of known directors make their mark on it, the aforementioned Cameron and Anderson, David Fincher, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and those dumb Skyline guys. Scott returned to the series with the polarizing Prometheus, hoping to take the series in a new direction. Leaving the tired Alien mythos behind and exploring new venues, such as the origin of human life. Bold new choices and a fresh perspective, giving audience a more adult rated sci/fi series to follow in the years to come.

Well that didn't happen. Prometheus did okay at the box office, but expectations to connect it with the Alien franchise soiled people when the dots were not connected. Complaints about logic (taking helmet of, running in a straight line) overshadowed everything else about the film; stunning visuals, tense thrilling sequences and good performances. So with Alien: Covenant it looks like Scott buckled under pressure and steered the series back towards the Xenomorphs, hoping to explore their origins a bit more. In doing so, he takes away the mythology and mystique. Do we really need to know where these guys come from? Is the fact that David is engineering these creatures taking away from their scare? This film in my opinion goes backwards for the franchise when it tried to elevate itself beyond.

If you're looking for another by the numbers Alien film, I'm sure Covenant will scratch that itch. A colonist ship picks up a distress signal from a habitable planet. They must decide whether they should check it out, or continue on with their mission. The planet has all the perfect necessities for life. Once there, they find out that they are not alone. There seem to be CGI creatures running around. Yeah, the effects kind of take away from the realism and terror these creatures use to pose on us as viewers. Scott goes for a more hard R than his previous entry. A really well done sequence involves one character convulsing and an Alien falling out of his split spine. Gross body horror done right.

Is it weird that the most interesting aspect of the film is when Fassbender plays two roles? He says to his "brother", you just worry about blowing, I'll do the fingering. Yup.

What a curious mention. I figure it's worth clarifying that I first watched the non-Anderson installments, the former of which (Apocalypse) is still my pick for the worst of the franchise (though Extinction may be the second-best after Retribution).

As for Covenant, I don't find myself particularly bothered that the origin gets explained because at least Scott's using the development less to over-explain that which should not be explained and more to try working through the themes and issues that trouble him (as with Blade Runner, it's hard not to think about how losing a brother impacted his approach to the material of artificial beings questioning their nature within the greater expanse of an uncaring creator/universe). It handles the mix of both alien and existential terror a lot better than Prometheus did, at least - so no, it is most definitely not weird that the David/Walter sections end up being the most interesting part since they are quite simply meant to be (and, while we're at it, this arguably applies to David's role in Prometheus as well).

GLADIATOR (2000)

Watched this again on the weekend. Forgotten just how good it was with Russel Crowe's Oscar performance leading the show. I love the journey we the viewer take with the Maximus character..

The plot in brief. In AD 180,General Maximus Decimus Meridius intends to return to his home after he vanquishes the pesky Germanic tribes. After the successful battle Emperor Marcus Aurelius tells Maximus that..as he regards his son Commodus unfit to rule..he wishes Maximus to succeed him to rid Rome from corruption. Commodus, upon hearing this, murders his father. and plans to execute Maximus. The general escapes and is then sold into slavery.

Imho this Gladiator scene is the film's most stirring..

Girlfriend's first time seeing it. This go around it felt a bit bloated, but it's still a masterpiece. I had forgotten just how unsettling Anthony Perkins is throughout. If you haven't seen it yet, why? There's a reason we're still talking about it 58 years later.

The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
Rating: 7/10

Hoping that this zombie movie would prove exciting and original, I sat down, popped my feet up, and zoned out. I don't really have any major complaints. It was well directed and acted. It is frustrating that the movie industry is close minded and struggles with parity in representation across the board. It is so nice to see a black girl as the leading actor and the heroine of her own story- Sennia Nanua was really good. I think the reasoning behind the second generation hungries is a bit weak... they only revert to zombie tendencies when in close contact with human skin??? Could be a little better. Besides the ability to control your zombie urges, most of the plot line isn't groundbreaking. This ending was quite the moral/philosophical dilemma, however... it was certainly an ending I haven't seen before! Overall, it was good, I was just hoping for more originality and excitement.

USS INDIANAPOLIS: (2016)
https://mr.comingsoon.it/imgdb/locandine/235x336/53291.jpg

Based on an actual event. Timeline is 1945. Tells of the American warship which carried the A bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. After unloading its dealy cargo the USS Indianapolis falls prey to a Japanese sub and is sunk. What follows is a week from hell as the hundreds of survivors battle hunger, thirst, injury, the elements and the worst denison of the deep..the man eating Great White shark. This flick, which has Nicolas Cage in the lead as the ship's commander, lacked that special something of the classic war film. The acting was wooden..even Cage. The characters not evoking sympathy or respect. In short..a major disappointment. rating_3

Galaxy Quest

I sat down to watch this again not long ago and like a moth to a flame my wife came in the room and said, “Is that Alan Rickman?” I responded, “Yeah, haven’t you seen Galaxy Quest before?” She said no and sat down to watch and subsequently forgot whatever it was she was doing. Snape is a fav’ of hers and she loves Harry Potter like crazy. Rickman is also one of my favorite actors although I am not a huge Potter fan and this movie would not be the same without him. I would not say he carries the movie but he is a large part of why it is just so damn fun. The melancholy/sarcasm mix is a perfect role for him, think Eeyore. Tim Allen is also cast very well, hell the casting in general for this fun-filled flick is just plain perfect. It has a very improv feel to it and I highly recommend it if you like your sci-fi mixed with humor.

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, it certainly could have had some more innovative writing in some parts. It was a very decent film that could have been great. I really liked the ending.

I suppose you've all heard it from me before but the book fixes many issues the film version has: characters are deeper and their actions more logical, there are some story elements that are completely missing form the film that make story work better and there's much less emphasis on your typical sneaking among the zombies with guns. Only thing I didn't like in the book was the actual language which to me felt rather clumsy.

I gave the film 5/10 and the book would be 7/10 on the same scoring system.

Comedy horror labelled as "A family fight off zombies while spending time in a cabin in the woods".
I was expecting a Cabin In The Woods knock-off.

Instead is a non-comedy non-horror filled with main characters who aren't exactly likeable.
There's Dad, Daughter, Son, and a friend of the two kids, and Dad's missus.

The Dad is a 40+ year old man-child who spends the whole movie drunk and acting like an a-hole to his entire family.
Dad's missus is a 30 year old, a drunkard as well, who treats the kids like sh*t, gets drunk, turns into a zombie, then tries to kill the kids.
The Daughter is a wannabe tom-boy who treats her Brother like crap and treats her potential love interest (her Brother's "friend") like dirt.
The Brother is the same, treats his friend and his Sister like crap.
And the young lad who plays the put-upon friend is basically there to do his best impression of Jay Baruchel and runs the show throughout the entire 1st and 2nd acts... in the third act, he kinda becomes a non-character among the 3 kids of the film.

Then there's Lauren Holly playing the main antagonist who runs around in a ski-mask.
She's basically feeding the zombies, and uses them as guard dogs.
Like the friend of the family though, she's kind of a non-character, has little threat value, and then sort of does some stuff in act 3 that has absolutely no impact.

If anything, I actually wanted the zombies to win.
There's nothing to warrant me actually getting behind the characters.

Considering this was shown super-late on the Horror channel on a Friday night... says it's best as a post-pub movie while falling asleep on the sofa after drinking too much (like the characters).

Ant Man and the Wasp
7/10.
My enjoyment was hampered somewhat by the quantum and pseudoscience which went right over my head (and over Scott Lang's too), muddying the plot and motivations - perhaps it will become clearer to me in a future viewing. The villain, while sympathetic, wasn't very interesting and the movie's ending felt rushed.
The best thing about the movie was The Wasp. Though I liked her hair shorter (called back to the original Wasp).

I'm really trying to understand all the love for Woody Allen but he still didn't convince me here!

There was a couple of good moments and some jokes I guess would work better if I saw this when it came out and not 40 years later. Diane Keaton is a charm!

A beautiful female hitchhiker is picked up by an unseen driver and shortly after murdered. Mark Gifford, a merchant sailor on leave, then disposes of the body, attracting the suspicion of his wheelchair bound brother Robert . Police Inspector Cheadle is no fool and soon suspects both of the Gifford siblings. This psycho mystery was one of the best things to come out of the Australian film industry in the mid '70s. There are only the two suspects but the taut direction by Tim Burstall keeps you guessing to the final scene. John Waters (Mark) and George Mallaby (Robert) are superb as the tormented brothers. There is also a camero role by veteran thespian Charles 'Bud' Tingwell.rating_4

My wife and I both enjoyed this quite a bit. Three parents try to prevent their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night. It's an average but just fine setup for a comedy. It has some elements of what is wrong with modern comedy, but it also has plenty of what is right. One thing I liked; whereas most of these movies tend to get sappy in the last 20 minutes, this one has moments of sappiness throughout, but it always bounces right back to the humor. It felt more consistent. There are plenty of good characters and I was very entertained.

ONE HOUR PHOTO: (2002)'

Sy Parrish runs a one-hour photo developing lab in a small mall. He's a perfectionist about his work and generous to his regular customers, including a typical family..the Yorkins. Over the years, he's seen the family grow through their photographs and feels an affinity with them. In particular, he has developed an unhealthy attraction to Nina Yorkin. When he finds out that her husband is being unfaithful, coupled with a threat to his job, his already precarious mental state tips him over the edge. Funny man/clown Robin Williams excells in this psycho thriller. Shows yet again he is a flexible and competent dramatic actor..displaying his ability to play the disturbed character as well as any. Other than the rather puzzling last scene I was transfixed by this movie.rating_4

This has all the hallmarks of a great 80's camp horror classic.. atmosphere, music, special effects are all spot on.. unfortunately I had the same problem as last time with this, after 30 mins it stalls in any kind story development, there's kids, a spooky old house built on an abandoned funeral home, possession, demons.. it's fun and silly, not much else.. next up.. Grabbers (2012)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1a/Grabbers.jpg

B-movie throwback, based on a remote Irish island.

After a meteor comes down, the resident Garda (Police) of the island, a scientist, and a couple fishermen, begin to notice odd creatures living in the caves by the shore.
Hence... a night of adventure :D

Man this film is funny.
Loads of situational comedy, most of it based around alcohol.
Slapstick in buckets too... when the 3 main characters approach a possibly dead creature they grab whatever weapon they have to hand... a chair, a knife, and a rolled up magazine
Then there's moments of inspiration in shooting, including a creature's POV while the main cast are stamping and kicking it in a panicked state.

A lot of the drunk humour (spoken) is pretty daft too, but in a good way.
*Looks at drunk guy* "How are you still alive?! Have you eaten anything?"
"I had a bag of chips yesterday."

"Right, weapons... what have we got?"
"I have a nailgun, and a board with a nail in it"
"I have a pellet gun"
"What are we going to do with a pellet gun?"
"Shoot pellets........ I don't have any pellets"
*Walks in looking serious* "Super-soaker, shoots 20 feet. It's my Nephew's."
*Group silence*
"Dibs the watergun"

Even though the creatures are kinda generic in looks (squid crossed with a facehugger), they have a few original quirks to make them differ from the other alien monsters out there in movieland... including how they live off blood, need to be wet to survive, and alcohol is deadly to them.
The CGI and practical effects are also decent for a low budget movie. In fact, better than most major Hollywood movies of late to be totally honest.

Would probably be a borderline entry to my Isolation Horror thread as well.

I would like to pay someone to tell me precisely what this was about. This oddity started out with a good premise for a film..a rail accident from which there is a sole survivor. He is a middle-aged security guard by the name of Dave Dunn( Bruce Willis). Miraculously Dunn walked from the crumpled train wreck without a scratch while 131 fellow passengers perished. Unbreakable then loses its way when a negro artist Elijah Price (Samuel Jackson) seeks to find Dunn's apparent secret of being impervious to any type of injury or even sickness when he himself has brittle bones which break often. Going on the final credits this film in based on fact. I find that hard to believe.. A big disappoinment... rating_2

One Adjective: Entertaining.

Not that the film didn't incorporate anything profound. I knew there was no way in hell it was going to topple the first. 'The Incredibles' is a classic, and one of the best animated films ever made. I do applaud the filmmakers for attempting (aside from the plot) to make this as different as you could from the original; the fast pace, the amazing animation, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I do have my fair share of criticisms (The Villain, Portrayals of Certain Characters, Baby Jack Jack, the fact that it has the same plot of the last film.) But overall, this movie felt satisfying. I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Mr. Glass isn't trying to "find" Dunn's secret - he has his own theory (spurred on by reading lots of comics about superheroes and supervillains) that there must be a polar opposite to him, the most fragile person in the world, who is...well, unbreakable. He is the one trying to convince Dunn that this theory is correct while Dunn refuses to acknowledge the truth about himself. That's why the big twist is that Mr. Glass was the one who caused the train crash (and other apparent disasters) - he was trying to find the unbreakable person in question and, with Dunn, he found him. He does so in order to encourage Dunn to be the hero (which he does in the end by stopping a home invasion), even if that means that he ultimately becomes the villain of the story.

Also, the title card is an admittedly clumsy way to wrap up the story (it seems tacked-on at the last minute as if to assure audiences that, yes, the villain does get punished), but it's not like this movie about a guy discovering he's a superhuman was really trying to sell itself as a true story in the first place.

Now pay up.

I guess if I had to simplify it any further it'd be to sum up the plot as

a man looking to give the world a hero and becoming a villain in the process

I mean, this isn't exactly Primer or anything. I find it pretty straightforward (practically to a fault) in developing its plot, character, and themes.

The Chaser (2008) (Dir. Na Hong-jin) 3
https://i.imgur.com/LHD4kCG.jpg

The Chaser is a 24 hour police procedural with the kind of narrative momentum such a story requires. There's enough tension and intrigue to compel us to see it through. Unfortunately, the main character's development relies on two characters who are trotted in and out of the story at the convenience of the plot so that their intermittent suffering will convince us we're invested emotionally. We aren't. Without a convincing motivation, the story comes off as something exploitative to gawk at. Mercifully, there is much to gawk at.

The Host (2006) (Dir. Bong Joon-ho) 3
https://i.imgur.com/vQYQFr1.jpg

With too many ideas to cohere into a wieldy narrative, The Host is an increasingly messy farce with charm and skill in all of its pursuits but not enough restraint to curb the bloat inherent to such an Americanized blockbuster.

I watched this after a recent post by HashtagBrownies in Movie Tab. It's yet another school shooting movie, this time in the found footage style, at least as the two boys prepare for the attack. The act itself we see via a school security camera. It's hard to tell how good some of these movies are as the subject matter is automatically chilling. Even the most mundane moments are filled with dread. Listening to a 911 operator talk through the main act was super annoying, but otherwise I thought this was real good.

Point Blank (1967) (Dir. John Boorman) 4
https://i.imgur.com/c4FUcdj.jpg

Walker is a hired gun whose last bits of humanity are stripped away in a much-too-personal double cross. He's served men who have "no principle but profit" for too long, and the only thing keeping him from the grave at this point is settling the principle. He walks the Earth like a spirit in purgatory driven by eternal unresolve. Boorman sets a haunting tone that lends a new dimension to a familiar crime noir dressing it up with feverish editing and abandoning the clever banter for silence or something close enough to it. Point Blank is a genre film considerate of its art and in touch with the severity of its subject matter.

I love this movie. The comedy is so well done and it holds great respect for the source material (Star Trek) to the point where fans of Star Trek actually ranked this higher than some Trek movies in a list of the Best Star Trek Films.

Unbreakable then loses its waywhen a negro artist Elijah Price (Samuel Jackson) seeks to find Dunn's apparent secret of being impervious to any type of injury or even sickness when he himself has brittle bones which break often. Going on the final credits this film in based on fact. I find that hard to believe.. A big disappoinment... rating_2

Maybe it's just me, but that word is used so sparingly to describe someone around my area that it's weird to see it written out to describe an actor like Jackson.

All cheesy and no good script makes Stallone a dull boy. Very laughable history and characters, still I had some fun. I really like Stallone, the guy have his charisma, but come on...

Interesting moments, good acting by the three main protagonists -- Alessandro Nivola in particular was incredible convincinting (I can't look to him and don't remember Pollux Troy haha ["Bye bro!"] -- the director handle the delicate moments with such a good domain. Unfortunately, the conclusion and the overall history are the same of the same.

All dogs are evicted from Japan and sent to a nearby island. A young boy arrives at the island in search of his pet and is helped in doing so by a pack of dogs.
That's the basic storyline without going into any spoilers.

Great film. I don't know if you're a fan of Anderson or not but if not, don't let that put you off watching it. Not that its totally different from his other work (FMF) but it is much superior.

By the same director as Martyrs, which I love, so I went in with high expectations which was probably unfair. On the Ropes (James Mark, 2018) - Two brothers in a mobster family become enemies when their father chooses the more quiet son over the hot-tempered violent prone son. Pretty nice fight scenes and John Wick-inspired action mixed in with emotional drama on part of the two leads.

I noticed them but it wouldn't be a complaint of mine. There are a few stereotypical and cliché scenes that could possibly be interpreted differently I suppose, maybe to the equivalent of a hard-drinking Irishman in a movie, which wouldn't bother me. Difficult to say, as it comes off as quirky more than anything.

Which version was it? The one I saw years ago was clearly the one with all the real sex taken out . It's certainly an interesting watch – hell of an ending too. I've just watched The Shout with John Hurt and the story is by Robert Graves so I was thinking about Hurt as Caligula in I Claudius. I watched this after seeing Mr. Minio post about it in Movie Tab. It's from the same director as the infamous Men Behind the Sun. Chinese illegal immigrants are trying to get into Hong Kong for a better life. Those who are unlucky enough to dodge the border police end up captured by a group of sadistic kidnappers who treat them to fun stuff like rape, torture, and painful death. They're hoping to get their relatives in HK to pay ransom. To my surprise, this was quite entertaining. Believe me, these illegals would kiss Trump's feet, the bottoms and between the toes. It's currently on YouTube with subtitles.

BODY SNATCHERS: (1993)

"Let me go while there is still time. I am not crazy. Listen to me" These are the demented babblings of a doctor in a mental hospital in an early scene of the 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

This sci-fi classic has been made in various formats over the years. The original is imho the best.

One of the more obscure versions was the 1993 one with an unknown cast, other than Meg Tilley ( then flavour of the month). This is darker than the other versions, with more chills, quirkiness and even a full frontal of the luscious Tilley.rating_3. For the record I give the 1956 version a 4.

When Marnie Was There really spoke to me on a personal level, in part due to something that just happened today. More on that later. I wasn't all that different at Anna's age. I know what it is to be depressed and I often did just want to be left alone. I even had those regrettable moments of self-loathing. I suffered depression for many years without even being consciously aware of it; granted, a five-year-old probably wouldn't be and, honestly, I didn't even openly acknowledge that I was depressed until I was 16. Sure, I had a few so-called friends, but I barely wanted to be around them with how they were always making stupid jokes about me and calling me weird. And while I may not have suffered asthma (that's my eldest sister from Mom's previous marriage), I did; suffer nasal congestion until I was 12 and a half years old and that is no picnic. So, this had a protagonist that I found pretty relatable. So, as it goes, Anna's foster mother sends her on a brief vacation to stay with some of her (foster mother's) relatives and she ends up finding out a lot about herself and her biological family, the latter of which there's "a rather sad story" about, that comes by way of Vanessa Williams' Hisako. The latter part of that sentence is what got me so. One of Mom's friends, Jessie, (really she's so close that she's like family just from she and Mom knowing each other ever since they were kids) came to visit earlier and after a while said she had to tell the truth (which is a very sad story in its own right) about Mom's dad. I knew all about Dad's side of the family: my grandfather was an Italian-American and my grandmother was Japanese, Grandpa's dad, having fought in World War II, hated her simply because she was Japanese, despite the fact that she was just a little girl when Pearl Harbor was bombed, her family disowned her, at least in part due to marrying my grandfather and she called Dad (who Mom named me for by the way) "baka" (and she might call me one for watching anime in English if she were still here) every day and once broke a plate across his head when he was 10, where she let my uncle (who stayed in trouble) get away with everything. So, onto Mom's side: All I knew was that Mom was born on my great-grandmother's (who asked if Mom had come to take her place) birthday, my great-grandfather who kept his head shaved constantly and whom Mom and my uncle called "Daddy" was poison mean (really, they'd ask him a question and he'd say, "I ain't your G--damn daddy! What the f--k ya askin' me for?!"), and my grandmother was a horrible, very bigoted woman who beat Mom, said she hated her, wished she was dead and called her a "heifer" (the very reason I can't stand that word and find it extremely offensive) every chance she got and smoked all those cigarettes, and that there was a man named James who was purported to have named her Yvonne (pronounced YA-VON, not E-VON), whom her mother claimed was her dad. I'd never known about her real father (and neither had Mom, in case you hadn't guessed) until now. Jessie recounted a conversation she heard when they were kids that my maternal grandmother, Mary Lue, and her sister, Willie Mae, had with Jessie's mother, also named Jessie, in which they, intoxicated, mentioned that Mom's father was a rich Italian man and proceeded to boast about having killed him. What they bragged about is how they lured my grandfather and put something in his drink (back in the '60s, mind you!) so that he couldn't fight back and then brutally murdered him by beating him repeatedly with a stick until he died before throwing his body into a suction hole. What's worse, they got away with it (at the time) and proceeded to murder a man known as Mr. Mitch. See, like I said, Mary Lue was a bigot: she hated Italians, she hated Asians, she hated African-Americans (especially Dr. King)... Everyone, really. She seduced my grandfather and then attempted to spread it around that he raped her. She wasn't anything resembling a mother or someone you'd be proud to call Mom. Literally all she did was carry a baby. Eventually, Mary Lue's crimes caught up with her and she paid the ultimate price for everything she'd done: she died a slow and painful death much like that which she inflicted on my grandfather, though hers was at the hands of tuberculosis at the young age of 31 in 1970, where Mom, who was 14 at the time, had actually told her she was going to contract the disease and die if she didn't stop smoking. Meanwhile, Willie Mae slowly lost her grip on sanity until her death in the 1980s. Still, though their actions caught up with them, it still doesn't throw away what they did: murder a man, my grandfather at that, in cold blood. So again, just saying this one really got to me in an unexpected way and I certainly expect to watch it again in the future. So, we've got an excellent story featuring a believable protagonist, a well-scripted and fabulously acted English dub, a heartfelt core that probably took me by surprise more than it should have... And... What's this? It managed to topple Whisper of the Heart as my favorite none-Miyazaki Ghibli film. I certainly didn't expect that, now. Later, guys. I gotta go to bed.

Huge dip in quality from the first one, still watchable. It has several brillant scenes that would have worked very well in a 10 episode miniseries but they just sort of rush everything along. You end up missing a number of things in the film because they get glossed right over.

Hard Romanticker (2011)

https://www.laeigafest.com/images/2011/lineup/hard-romanticker_1.jpg

This is a Japanese crime film that reminded me of British crime films like The Business or Rise of the Footsoldier. I thought the story was a jumbled mess. A young gangster type makes enemies everywhere he goes while trying to make his place in the world. It's rather violent, and it was a bit disturbing seeing some of the violence against women because it's not an exploitation film. It was good, not great.

Not much good to talk about here - The plotline of the story is nothing really new at all. Couple goes out on a vacation in an isolated spot to unwind and figure out their relationship and where it is going and they happen to do it where a human traffic ring has decided to set up shop. Paula Patton tries to make things interesting and exciting, but everything just falls flat for me. The writing and directing are the things that need a vacation and the only thing that really kept me interested was seeing how Mike Tomlin the Steelers Coach and Alicia Keys would make out.

Dredd (2012)

Pretty cool, very graphic violence and Nice post apocalyptic gritty setting. Dredd the character is a mix of Nolan’s Batman and Clint Eastwood in unforgiven. Other than that it’s just an action movie. Nothing much more to it which is fine - Stick to the genre, no surprises.

The movie sounds very good too, nice bullet sounds and ambient music. The cgi bullets and effects really work. Normally I have a problem with them (cgi bullets) but this was AOK.

I’d happily watch this character in this city again. When’s the sequel?

It's been a few weeks, but the last movie I saw was Incredibles 2 in theaters! Obviously, I thought this movie was amazing, and I even think it might be better than the first one! It had a great balance of throwing in a strong female lead without being blatantly obvious or annoying! The movie made me laugh and it had a great story line. Kind of predictable, but that's kind of what I expected with a kid's movie. Overall, this was a great film!

Victor McLaglen won the best actor Oscar as an ex IRA member who turns in his best buddy for a reward. He has to deal with the consequences, being his guilt and everyone he knows trying to figure out who the informer is. John Ford directs, and he does a spectacular job at putting the viewer into this world.

I thought more Harry Callahan, especially when he says "Outstanding". A bit like Harry's "Marvellous" :).

I was interested in the first half and engrossed in the second as all the interlocking tales came together .. from the makers of Gomorrah but I liked this a bit more

I loved it, probably my favourite of the year. I thought it was extremely clever, well directed and didn't waste any screentime. Excellent for a re-watch to pick up on the dozens of subtle hints throughout the film.

My one gripe is why would he take the cotton out of his ears when trying to leave the house? He knows it works to his advantage. Keep them in dammit.

Watched 'Sicario 2 Day of the Soldado' today. If you compare it with your usual action/drug/mafia movies then it's a decent flick, but if you compare it with the original then it's quite inferior in all aspects. And that ending doesn't help. Brolin and Benecio Del Toro.

On a side note, the lady at the ticket counter demanded my ID, because of it being an adult movie, and that's just made my day😁.

THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US: (2017)

https://www.foxmovies.com/s3/dev-temp/en-US/__5a0622264e24e.jpg

I first contracted the survival movie bug after watching Lord of the Flies at boarding school. I have been hooked ever since.
My latest foray into the survival genre is The Mountain Between Us. This is a similar story to Survive in that the characters also find themselves atop a snow covered mountain after a plane crash, caused by a stroke or heart attack by the pilot (Beau Bridges). The strangers Alex (Kate Winslet and Ben (Idris Elba) decide they will die of either the cold or hunger if they stay with the wreck so are forced to trek down the mountain to reach civilization. The theme running thru this fictional movie is the connection that Alex a Caucasian photo-journalist and Ben a doctor of African decent must forge in order to survive. Interestingly, the subject of racism is never broached. This allows an inspiring ride to be taken by the viewer as the two overcome enormous pitfalls to remain alive. The soapy ending stops me giving this a 4. rating_3_5

I never get tired of this one. No matter how many times I've seen it, it's still a ridiculously fun and exciting film with an absurd amount of nuances to pick up on with repeated viewings, undoubtedly not only my favorite anime, but my favorite animated film overall. This time around, simply by bumping my HDTV's volume up to 60, I heard all the sound effects I never noticed before. Kaneda's bike comes alive like never before, the elevator when the Colonel and the doctor have that conversation, in which the former resolutely states, "It's a soldier's duty; you wouldn't understand," emits a brand new hum, voices resonate in an all-new manner, footsteps sound with a brand new thump, and the drums in the Geinoh Yamashirogumi score bang with a brand new resonance... And this is the Streamline dub, though it actually sounds, to these ears anyway, considerably better than the hypersonic track, in which the chants sound considerably weak, faded and lifeless... Which is somewhat baffling considering that Dr. Shoji Yamashiro himself is the one who put that track together. Another thing I've noticed is that Tetsuo is different from other film villains in that... Well, you actually feel bad for the kid and it's one of the things that makes Akira so fascinating. Even as he murders more and more people, even when he kills Yama at the bar, with his newfound power, you can see that he's clearly screwed up in the head and not in his right mind; hell, he acts like my sister when she's having a behavior about cigarettes, especially during the scene where Kaneda says, "That's enough, Tetsuo! Are you tryin' to kill him?" when he repeatedly beats a clown with the intention of murder. He's not the most likeable character (that's easily Kaneda, for my money), but he is a damned fascinating character. The film is also exceptionally well-written, yes, even the Streamline dub some like to crap on, despite what some say about it; I really like how Clarke's Kaneda's "Now you're king of the mountain, aren't ya, but it's all garbage!" links directly back to an earlier scene where Rabson's Tetsuo says, "I'm king now! All right, Kaneda! Do you hear me?" in turning Tetsuo's own words against him. The well-placed humor (most involving Kaneda's interest in Kei) still works to keep the film from devolving into simply being depressing and horrifying. And, of course, the action is still that much fun. Yes, indeed, still a state of the art adventure with a thought-provoking subtext on the abuse of power and I highly recommend it to any lover of not just animation but film in general.

While it might seem odd to pair with Akira, the two are closely intertwined as being the two that got me into anime. Of course, I had to turn it back down to 40. This one is loud. I mean, it's an assault on the eardrums if your set is loud enough. Honestly, watching them so close together, I did notice that they share some thematic DNA. Let me explain: there's a scene where Nausicaä says, "Stop it! All this killing must stop!" Both films deal with this, though Otomo's film deals with it on an R-rated level, depicting Tetsuo's self-destruction as he murders more people and destroys more of Neo-Tokyo in the process, while Miyazaki's is at least a little more optimistic, while still showing that the Tolmekians and those like them are on that road if they don't change their ways. Both also deal with the abuse of (and greed for) power (Castle in the Sky also deals with this), Otomo's film with Tetsuo's abuse of telekinesis leading to the infamous mutation scene where in Miyazaki's film, Kushana's attempt at using the Giant Warrior to wipe out the Ohm culminates in its destruction. And after having seen all of his works, it's still my favorite Miyazaki film and second only to Akira when it comes to my favorite anime and animation overall and, again, one I highly recommend to any lover of film. Later, guys.

Million Dollar Baby (2004) by Clint Eastwood

http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/29000000/Maggie-and-Frankie-million-dollar-baby-29012607-446-332.jpg

It's incredible how Eastwood never writes yet makes what feels like such personal films. What a terrible outlook on the connections that most people value the most. Once again, Eastwood's characters are mostly John Waynes, no-names without true pasts, and everything is determined by their present actions and mood. I don't know if I've ever seen a more anti-family movie, one where those connections are demonized over connections of nobody to nobody, but based on mutual respect. Eastwood, as someone who has been married and with different partners many times, is justifying his actions, his relationship with Maggie is as close to romantic as a film looking for Oscar revenue would allow. This is a film about what it means to be lonely, and what it means to form connections based on a mutual loneliness.

If excessive violence and blood is your bag then you will like this Wes Craven offering. It is a remake of his 1972 film of same name which I did not see. So I can not compare them. There are scenes of sexual assault, a knife being thrust into a girl's stomach, an axe splitting a head and an arm being shoved into a waste disposal. That is just for starters. The cast are a bunch of unknowns.. at least to me. This could have been quite a good psycho thriller had the storyline not been hijacked by the over the top graphic and gratuitous violence.rating_2_5

Song artists featured include Wilson Pickett, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sam and the Sham and the Pharaohs, Three Dog Night, and The Smiths. Didn't notice this when I watched, but also apparently features Macaulay Culkin in his first screen appearance as an uncredited trick-or-treater. Is it actually any good? This is yet another that never gets old. It's consistently fun and exciting going along for the ride on Sheeta and Pazu's adventure and watching Leachman's Dola chew up the scenery always brings a smile to the face, especially as she proves herself more compassionate than she initially lets on; of course, I still think Disney put a really good dub together for the film, with Paquin (as Sheeta), Van Der Beek (as Pazu), Leachman and Hamill (as Muska) standing out. For the record, it's worth mentioning that there's two versions of it on Shout Factory's Blu-ray, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track with Hisaishi's (Miyazaki-approved) expanded music score that he put together specifically for the 1998 dub and a Dolby Digital 5.1 track containing a 2010 remix of the dub which removes the expanded score. Needless to say, the DTS-HD Master Audio track stands head and shoulders above the Dolby track sonically with the difference in amplitude and clarity alone and opinions differ, but... The expanded music score is, for my money, much better than the original synthesizer score. Don't get me wrong, the original score is good, it's just that the expanded score is a big improvement that makes Castle in the Sky feel like a more complete film; just compare the big destruction scene at the end (any scene in the film, really). Also, I've found from a brief comparison that unlike the Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track, the Dolby Digital 5.1 version of the dub and the French Dolby Digital 2.0 dub, the song at the end, Carrying You (Kimi wo Nosete in Japanese), plays to its entirety on the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 dub where it comes off as truncated on all of the other tracks. It's also, after seeing all of his films, easy to see that Muska is, along with the Count of Cagliostro, the most overtly evil character Miyazaki's ever created. Kenneth Brown once said in his review of Disney's 2012 Blu-ray release that the odds Sheeta and Pazu face weren't as dangerous or insurmountable as what Nausicaä comes up against, but after seeing the film multiple times, that's not really a fair comparison since we're talking about a couple of 12-year-olds constantly being shot at and chased (not to mention Pazu is once pistol-whipped) by greedy adults who don't care who they have to kill to get the crystal and Laputa's treasures. It's still immensely satisfying seeing the adults in question get their comeuppance, as Paquin's Sheeta drives it home that "a king without compassion does not deserve a kingdom" and "the world cannot live without love." It's also great picking up on all the nuances, like seeing Pazu's dad in that cloud and noticing that there are fox-squirrels like Nausicaä's on the island of Laputa. So, it's still my second favorite Miyazaki film and my favorite "official" Ghibli film (since Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was made and released before the studio's conception) and one I highly recommend to anyone who claims to be an adventure lover. Later, guys.

A Quiet Place (2018)

Wow, a brilliant, tense, powerfully acted horror movie that plays with almost no dialogue. A great directing job by John Krasinski, who also plays the father here. His wife is played by real-life wife Emily Blunt who brings her acting chops to the film with her beautiful face doing all the telling. But the film is pretty much stolen by the young, real-life deaf actress, Millicent Simmonds, who plays Krasinski and Blunt's deaf daughter in the film. Ever emotion, every feeling, is displayed by Simmonds with great authority for a young teen who is just a phenomenal find. I look forward to seeing her in more roles because she knocks this one out of the park. Noah Jupe does a fine job as the young son of the family.

The movie involves a post-apocalyptic world that has been taken over by creatures that hunt by sound. They are blind and apparently cannot smell but the slightest sound will bring them running and they will rend their victims to pieces. The Abbott family has survived for well over a year, finally finding an abandoned farm that suits their survival needs well. But the creatures are always lurking around and the movie kept me on edge as there is one mistake after another or an accident that will send the monsters scurrying.

The almost-complete non-sound is practically a character in the film, with long silences covered by sign language between the family members. And then, when there is noise, the biggest noisemakers are the creatures. And their appearance is really gnarly---they remind me somewhat of Venom from Marvel Comics, except these critters do not have eyes, just large hearing sensors that put them wise to their prey. Nice creature design.

Blunt's character is very pregnant here and there's the worry of how will they survive with a crying baby in this terrible world. But, this resourceful family already have that covered, as well as how to alert each other when danger is about and they (the family) are not in the same area of the farm.

I had a feeling I would love this film, so I took a chance and bought the DVD, sight unseen. I do not regret it a bit. This film is a total winner and I can't really go into much more without spoiling twists and turns. Just let me say that it starts off tense and never lets up.

THE IMPOSSIBLE (2012)..

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fd/The_Impossible.png

This disaster film is based on the actual 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that caused mass destruction and took 230,000 lives in 14 countries. A terrible tragedy. The story follows a Brit family (actual family were Spanish) who are hit by the full force of the massive tsunami while holidaying in Thailand. The mother is severely injured and along with her eldest son is separated from her other two boys and her husband...who we discover later are found safe in the remains of their hotel. I have to say there are some excellent special affects in this Spanish made film which brings to live that catastrophic morning in vivid detail. Australian Naomi Watts and Scots actor Ewan McGregor play the couple coming to grips over the possible loss of a loved one. There is also a fine performance by child actor Tom Holland. Exciting, moving and inspiring sums up The Impossible. rating_4

I didn't care for either of them. I usually don't rewatch movies I don't like, unless I figure they seemed like the type I should love. This happened with movies like No Country for Old Men, Con-Air, The Wrestler, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller. I loved all of those on my second viewing. It didn't happen with this movie but I did like it a little more. I wish it were directed by someone else who didn't have an agenda. Michael Haneke is an interesting and talented filmmaker, but he often wants to give his message. Sometimes it works fine, but I generally don't give a crap about his personal views. I think in this movie it's too blatantly obvious what he's trying to say, and it takes me out of the experience a bit. Ditto for breaking the 4th wall, I hate that. Otherwise, this is my kind of movie.

The Leisure Seeker (2018)

I don't know what is sadder, this movie or the dame's wig.

I think I added that one to my Netflix queue, I'll guess I will see if I like it or not?

A Generation - 7.5/10
My favorite of this trilogy. It seemed authentic, as opposed to 99% of movies during WWII that go overboard, instead of how it actually looked and was.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

2.5

https://www.minnpost.com/sites/default/files/asset/b/b4fszc/b4fszc.jpg

I watched this long ago as a teen. The only thing I remembered was a vision of Jimmy Stewart going off in a courtroom. This is a sequel to Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, which I watched last week. Although this movie seems to be the more beloved classic, I found Mr. Deeds and Gary Cooper to be far superior. I thought this was ok but a bit overdone, same with Stewart's performance.

Liked this, a quirky film that keeps up the interest, both leads are excellent.

So This Is New York - 6.5/10

I picked this only to see Henry Morgan, who I think is funny in real life, but there's hardly any video of him.

I didn't think it was great but as a low budget thriller it hit the mark. Hanekes stuff is divisive I admit.

The Informer (1935)

3.5

http://i.cdn.turner.com/v5cache/TCM/Images/Dynamic/i431/informer35_bettercountit_FC_470x264_020920170634.jpg

I'll have to check this one out. THANKS cricket!!

For me:

https://media.pri.org/s3fs-public/styles/story_main/public/story/images/20970_Pygmalion-02.jpg?itok=PFkmzTX0

Pygmalion (1939) 3.5+++ Having grown up on My Fair Lady is quite the disservice that I had not heard of, and when I finally did, actually watch the film that MFL was based on.
Quite a fun rendition with everyone, right down to some of the secondary actors that stood out, doing a very splendid job.

Side Note: when I found this image there was a link to a story regarding the writer, Bernard Shaw and how he hated the ending that replaced the one he wrote. How Pygmalion went from feminist manifesto to chick flick (https://www.pri.org/stories/2014-07-09/how-pygmalion-went-feminist-manifesto-chick-flick)

This is a bit of a roller coaster ride for the viewer. The early scenes with an American woman's four year old child vanishing into thin air from a London pre school evokes some tension and mystery that had me wanting more. Then the plot flounders for a while until a cluey policeman (Lawrence Olivier) pieces together the swiss cheese evidence being offered by the mother (Carol Lynley) and her brother (Keir Dullea). Bunny Lake then goes off into another tangent that had me scratching my head before the unpredictably nonsence ending. which I will not spoil.rating_3

You were too quick. That was my first draft. Did not have time to even edit it or post a pic.

What did you think of Bunny Lake is Missing. Is it a classic? imho it could have been if Preminger had not injected that odd period with politics of the day.. student protests and that annoying Zombies soundtrack. Why the strange Noel Coward character?. Was not relevant to the plot. No all this detracted from the story flow which was beginning to build some genuine mystery and intrigue..

Bad Timing (1980)

3.5

Director Nicolas Roeg elevates fairly average material in this erotic psychological thriller. It seems in all the movies of his I've seen, I love his style, mood, vibe, or whatever you want to call it. Head doctor Art Garfunkel has an affair with the wild Theresa Russell, and when it doesn't end well, Harvey Keitel with his long hair in the back comes in to investigate. It is a dark movie, even darkly funny for the right person, and what I thought was cool was that I didn't even know what the crime was until the end. I heard this was a sick controversial movie. I couldn't see why, again, until the end, and then I thought oh yea I get it. So it's a bit of a slow burn that even wifey liked. She got yet another good laugh at my expense when Russell flashed a bit of pit fur, much to my horror. I had told her that I had a crush on her in the past. Anyway, I really enjoyed this but it's not for everyone. Vienna looks awesome btw.

Supposedly it's his response to violence being shown in the media, especially in America, and the reason he remade it is because not many Americans saw the original.

Watched 'Million Dollar Arm'. Can't remember the last time I have cringed so many times while watching a movie, as I did during this Disney film. It's based on a true story, but they have probably made it several times more melodramatic.
Still, it had Lake Bell. I always have time for her, since she seems like a nice person. And she totally rocked the Indian costume.

The exact reason for the remake I believe. Same as with George Sluizer and "Spoorloos"/"TheVanishing". I suppose it all comes down to how much you rate the original to see if you'll give the remake a crack.

3 Women (1977)

I haven't really liked any of the Robert Altman films I've seen, however I did love the first half of this film. It was simplistic beauty, a seemingly benign story of two women who meet at a therapeutic Hot Springs medical facility for the elderly and share an apartment. Altman takes this simple idea and makes it seem fascinating. I was riveted to the everyday happenings of these two women. Altman knows how to capture the little moments of life that so many other directors neglect. The first half of the film felt like observational cinema, and was truly a thing of beauty.

Shelley Duvall is in her prime her, both in years and more importantly in her acting ability. She abides her character with all these little nuances and idiosyncrasies that makes for one of the most intriguing characters I've seen portrayed on the screen.

Sissy Spacek is real good too, very naturalistic and grounded. She paired well with Shelley Duvall's more colorful persona. I'd give the first half of the movie a rating_4_5

But then as we get towards the end of the film it goes all surrealistic. Robert Altman is quoted as saying he started shooting without an ending, and improvised as they went. He did that a lot in his films, and IMO that lack of focus hurts the film. We didn't need a twisty Twilight Zone ending, and not all films need to end big. In fact less is often more and a quieter ending would have allowed the moments of the film to outshine Altman's improvisations.

The Shape of Water

I have to be honest, I have been avoiding this movie. It just looks so depressing. My wife has asked me to watch it with her at least 4 or 5 times now and there was always something else I wanted to see instead. We typically take turns picking out what we watch as a couple, but I have been able to persuade her to see something else whenever she suggested it. It seems like I had to be in the mood to watch this and I never even knew what that "mood" needed to be. Well last night she caught me in an I don't care type of mood, which I guess was the perfect feeling to have to experience The Shape of Water.

My guard was down and I had nothing to invest other than time, which at this moment in my life (as I recover from surgery for 6 weeks) I have a plethora of.

The movie to me felt very claustrophobic, but not in a bad way, I think it meant to feel like this - maybe, I don't know.? Anyway from the government facility to the cramped, dark apartments to the chained creature I felt just as much trapped watching it as I did being talked into watching it. We usually get to watch one movie a week (sans kid) and once we start something I always finish it because it is "our" time.

Saying all that I must say I did somewhat enjoy the movie, it was fairly predictable as far as the bigger plotline, but the smaller, more trivial things (Yes I remember a scene in the movie where this exact thing comes up) caught me by surprise many times - which made it interesting and fun to watch. The sadistic Michael Shannon character was quite creepy and disturbing even without his particulars for hygiene.

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NWvwhLeRZbI/WoLqVcjWCUI/AAAAAAAADBA/KvZiRLtZo5gRZTarLhEqZH9QdYtZ9ZUdwCLcBGAs/s1600/shape_of_water-michael%2Bshannon.jpg

I give this a claustrophobic rating of 3.5 and kind of need to watch it again with a more open mind.

Cat lovers beware!!!! ;).

This is one little chiller which I recall from my boarding school days. It may be a low budget affair with a B list cast but it held me in its grip for its entirety. The story begins with a car accident with a young female church organist as the sole survivor. Soon after the accident we find the woman heading to Utah for a new job. She is drawn as if by magic to an old abandoned fair ground and pavillion. She then begins seeing strange visions.. and has to question her sanity when she suddenly can not hear any sounds and is ignored by people. All thru this trauma the woman is stalked by what look like ghouls. Have I whetted your appetite ghoulies.rating_4

Saw Ant-man and the Wasp at the cinema today. Under house arrest after the events of Captain America Civil War, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) risks his own freedom to help Hope (Evengeline Lilly) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) try to rescue their lost mother/wife respectively from the quantum universe. This sequel to 2015's Ant-man is passable enough, but I didn't think it was quite as funny or inventive as the first one.

This film knocks my socks off!! Candace Hilligloss just amazing and a genuinely creepy movie....that organ, that dancing!!! I recorded it from Film 4 on a whim (UK) and I's so glad I did. Did ye ken that the "ghost" seen at the window was the director Spookie?

Bloody Sam keeps it a bit wistful here with the great Steve McQueen playing a prodigal (Junior) son who is perhaps not even wanted home. The practicalities of having a father that is useless are stripped bare but, still, the practicalities call for action (ticket at end).

The cast are great and somehow Sam pulls this off, it could have been just a vehicle for McQueen but the cast holds a strong tale together. 8/10

I never knew that @Marco (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=95220). Candace put in a believable performance. Yes a genuinely creepy movie that has stood the test of time. Will future generations remember many of todays so called creepy movies with their over the top jump scares and ridiculous plots?
