Wow. The other movie I saw by Pierre Granier-Deferre (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Granier-Deferre) garnered a 9/10 (Les Chat), also starring Jean Gabin.. I love the actors from the 30s who were able to turn out great roles as grandfathers.

Silly and over emphasized music score but has some good performances from Pat Hingle and an all too brief Dennis Hopper. Eastwood is his usual icy self to perfection. There's a love interest that starts to blossom but never really goes much of anywhere. That's when the film started earning its keep for me. Not anything grand or artistic like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly but not a bad westerner with Clint.

Wow.. Someone please tell me you saw this. I haven't seen many Arabic/Persian speaking movies, but everyone I have seen has been great, and also very rule-breaking. This is based on the writings of Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz - great story. The Lost Generation of Egypt with sex, drugs, and decadence during the 1967 War... PM me if you can't find it.

Powerful story with Jack Lemmon playing the caring but troubled husband and Lee Remick as his dipsomaniac wife. Both are great and there's real poignancy of what booze can create and destroy...not preachy though. 7.5/10 (Mancini's soundtrack is excellent).

It was really amazing seeing it in the theater; this is the first time I've actually gone to see a movie on my birthday. Seeing it on the big screen and hearing all the sound effects, and even background dialogue, I never noticed before while watching it at home was great; I'll probably never miss the sound of the train taking off ever again. Though some seem to really hate the dub - funny how a Japanese family (sitting there speaking Japanese at that) was watching it dubbed with the rest of us, I still say the then-12-year-old Daveigh Chase carries the 124-minute film with aplomb and the rest of the dub cast supports her excellently. Can't wait to go see Castle in the Sky in a few weeks. And when they inevitably announce Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind for the 35th anniversary, I already know I'll hardly be able to contain my excitement. This might actually be the best birthday ever.

I must admit that I may just be cheating a little bit here because ...

I wanted to try and find the proper forum to ask the following question, "There is a film that I consider to be very underrated and I'd very much like to recommend it to you all as well as I'd like to write a sentence or two explaining the reason why. This is not nearly large enough to constitute a review and I'm not at all certain how to go about this. Specifically, can anyone please tell me, where would be the best place for me to post such a recommendation?

I'm not sure that it is at all appropriate to start a new thread in the Movie Discussion forum. I would very much appreciate if anyone here can point me to the proper forum for such a thing. But in the meantime, here is the description of the movie that I would like to recommend to you - especially if you love the "Film Noire" genre.

I hope that you may be old enough to have seen some of the "I Love Lucy" episodes because I'd like to tell you about a a film in which Lucille Ball appears and she does not come off as anything whatsoever like her screwball "Lucy" character from her TV show. Believe it or not, she plays a lady who I find to be romantically very attractive - the kind of lady that I would like to ask out for dinner and/or some romance.

The film is titled "The Dark Corner" (1946). It stars Lucille Ball, Mark Stevens, William Bendix and Clifton Webb. Lucy portrays a secretary to a small time Private Investigator who is hard-working and honest and the kind of man that most men would like to have as a best friend. The story is about a murder and some standard kind of events often present in "film noire". But it revolves around the P.I. and his secretary. Lucy does not behave anything like the screwball you may well know. She made me believe that she was a very sweet young lady from the Midwest - just the kind of gal that I'd like to romance and marry. She does a great job in this role and she almost single-handedly carries the entire film.

Not to downplay Mark Stevens. Although I had never heard of him before or since he made this film. AAMOF, to my recollection, I remembered the lead role as having been played by Alan Ladd and that may tell you just what you need to know about the character he played. As an actor, he is awfully reminiscient of Alan Ladd - at least in my opinion he certainly seems to be.

William Bendix was great in this film. IMHO, he is very under-rated and I almost always greatly enjoy his participation in any film I see.

But, it is the "give and take" between Lucille Ball and Mark Stevens that made this film so enjoyable and I strongly recommend it to you on that basis.

P.S. I'd like to make one or two other tiny suggestions to anyone who writes movie reviews. I am strictly an amateur when it comes to writing movie reviews. So, please take these suggestions with a grain of salt.

I saw something that one of the reviewers did on this site and it looked like a terrific idea to me (although I'm finding it difficult to explain why). However, I will go out on a limb and suggest this as part of a standard procedure that any movie reviewer might consider when writing a future review. Please do not be offended at the idea that a know-nothing amateur like me is trying to tell you how to do your job. Just ask Yoda. That's just the kind of fool I am.

Actually, I'd like to make two suggestions to you. Here they are. I hope you may find one of them useful.

The first suggestion is that when reviewing a film, I have found it can often save the reader considerable time and trouble if the reviewer includes the year it was released in the title. i.e.

The Dark Corner (1946)

I have found a few movie reviews on this site that do not list the year the film was released and that made things downright difficult for me if I wanted to find more info.

Also, I saw a reviewer include one of the most memorable lines of dialog from a film very close to its title. I don't know exactly why I think this is such a good idea. But it sure did make the film memorable to me and it sure did help me pinpoint the name of the film and/or find the film in a movie review site whenever I needed to find some info about the film. In general, I just think it's a real good idea.

For example, when it comes to the movie "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", I consider that move to possibly be one of the ten best movies ever made and the line that I'd display prominently would be close to:

"Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges" ... or ...

"Badges? We don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!"

I'm not sure which line would be best for The Dark Corner. But it might well involve a roll of nickels or a white suit. After you have seen this film, you will certainly remember the significance of that roll of nickles and the white suit.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this recco and I hope you may find some time to watch The Dark Corner and I sure do hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. I really loved it. It's not necessarily a great film. But for some reason, I could watch it over and over again. It was truly that wonderful.

This has been just a tiny suggestion for anyone writing movie reviews. I'm very sorry that I don't remember who it was who I first saw doing this, but I'm pretty sure it was one of the people who review films on this site.

Best wishes to all of you. Ciao for now and have a great day.

BTW, one other film I'd like to recommend is "The Big Steal". It is also film noire. But not as noire as most oither film noires. It was made in 1949 and stars Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer and - well, what do you know? William Bendix. Bendix plays a bad guy in both these films. I always enjoy his participation. It doesn't matter whether he plays a good guy or a bad guy.

OK. Ciao for Now! Doggone it all to Heck! I still can't post any links. Oh dear.

What made this movie be opposed and criticized was not just the shockingly violence and explicit horror, with scenarios that you could fell like you were the victim almost in first-person, was the process, and that process is what makes this movie magnificent. Human emotions are a gift from our animal ancestors. Cruelty is a gift humanity has given itself, and the process is the pure representation of that cruelty, and because we can't embrace it, we like to picture it from someone else's eyes. This is a masterpiece in that sense.

This is what I call wasting potential. Lack of atmosphere, lack of substance, bad script, lacking of freaking violence (it's a Slasher for God's sake), lacking interesting characters. The film has an interesting long sequence, with Michael walking the streets leaving bodies behind, at the end of this sequence I said to my girlfriend: This movie will not have anything better than this sequence! And unfortunately I was right - what about that romance? does not make sense! And the cell phone that is silly discarded? And the plot twist involving the "New Loomis"? This film is a true mixture of bad ideas, bad script and bad acting. The only interesting character is Michael Myers himself, and he uses a damn mask... twenty minutes in, and I just wanted him to kill everyone in the most violent way possible (especially the niece, the daughter - and her husband too, damn it idiot, he was there just to be a useless jerk). Even Laurie was annoying, it wasn't a pleasure seeing this movie. Disappointed.

Do it. I have a 4k version, and I go back and watch bits of it every week. Truly stunning from Villeneuve and Deakins.

Unlovable (Suzy Yoonessi, 2018) rating_4
This ia quite an interesting indie drama about a woman with sex and love addictions that force her into rehab when she loses everything from her job to her relationship with her boyfriend. Her sponsor lets her live in her grandmother's home for 30 days where she meets her sponsor's brother and the two form a music group, forging a bond between two "unlovable" people.

Great indie drama based on the events of lead actress Charlene deGuzman with a great performance by John Hawkes, who plays her sponsor's reclusive brother. Hawkes even wrote three original tunes that were used in the film and I can't get the song "Time Traveler" out of my head...has a Weezer/Redd Kross indie rock feel to it.

Crazy evil in a crazy good film. Supernatural horror or a hallucinogenic nightmare or something of the two, it gives no clear answers but is one hell of a wild ride all drenched in glorious eye popping pallete. Nic Cages range of emotions is spellbinding. Throw in Bill Duke and real life cenobites for good measure and my mind is considerably blown mandy is the ****ing nuts.

Writer/director Chris Von Hoffmann outdid himself after his feature film debut Drfiter with this story of three teenage thieves infiltrating a lavish dinner party only to learn the guests at this party are a group of serial killers! And these three will have to survive the night as they become the prey. Great established cast from Julian McMahon and Robin Tunney to Sam Strike, who is definitely meant to do horror films after this and the recent Leatherface.

The Headless Woman (2008) by Lucrecia Martel

A depiction of the ambivalence in the psychological development of the protagonist. A very situational film which in many ways lack the context of a thoughtful narrative. In a sense the distance between the protagonist and her surroundings seems like an interesting way of depicting psychological ambivalence, but in the end the films is way to subtle and lack a strong manuscript.

I still regard Martel as one of the more interesting directors of latin america, with Zama being her masterpiece.

^ I can't figure out why on earth this film was rewarded an 18 certificate film here in the UK. No strong language, no sex/nudity scenes and most of the violence was quite hard to see in the lighting, I've seen worse in lower rated films(for example the film below was a 15 certificate film and had strong gore in it)... really puzzled. I was interested in why such a film got a high rating before I watched it but was severely disappointed.

Going back to Hereditary, there was a neat effect toward the end of the movie in that scene where...

Peter wakes up, and his "mom" is floating in the left upper corner of his room (such a creepy scene). I was sitting right in front of the screen, and I didn't see it because it was too dark to notice but a friend I was watching it with immediately gasped, "Holy ****!..." I said, I don't see anything. Then I moved a bit to the left and then it was my turn to gasp. He could see it because he was watching from an angle, and, as you know, with flat screen TVs that usually causes changes in brightness. So that was an interesting experience.

From the BBFC website.

Note: The following text may contain spoilers

DOWN A DARK HALL is a US supernatural horror film in which a troubled teenager is sent to a haunted boarding school.

Threat
There are several scenes of sustained tension, often culminating with 'jump' moments as ghoulish figures appear suddenly. There are also scenes in which characters become possessed by supernatural forces.

Injury detail
A possessed woman injures herself with a shard of glass.
Other issues include bad language ('bitches', '****', 'douche', 'bull****', 'fricking') and a single moderate sex reference when a student says of her teacher, 'I'd bone him.' There is also occasional moderate violence.

Doesn't scream 18 rating to me, but don't forget that home viewing ratings are usually looked at more strictly than cinema ratings. I suspect the self-harm scene might be the main reason it's not a 15 for home viewing.

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010)

Absolutely hated this, beyond belief! Of what little acting was required, it was pretty dismal. Probably the most boring film I've watched in a long long time. I spent the entire film waiting for the good part, turns out it was the end credits. Also, I was expecting something really disturbing to happen, still waiting.

Only thing I enjoyed was the score and some of the visuals but what's the point when the rest of the film is so worthless?

What a complete waste of time, this makes Mandy look great.

How this movie managed to be both a flawless fantasy of passion and a wrenching, honest depiction of first, fleeting love, I’ll never know. Honestly, this movie nearly killed me. Please don’t make a sequel.

I'm not going to say anything about this movie, because everything was been said and everyone knows is a very good movie. I will talk about my favorite scene, the Muir Woods sequence. Is a very relaxing scene for me because it discredit my search for relevance. Thinking about a living organism that was here for 10000 years totally unaware of any political, social event really is heartwarming. Suddenly everything makes sense.

Short 40 minute film from director Gaspar Noe, and it's the story that's continued in 1998's I Stand Alone. It was intense as expected, not just with the content, but also with the way it was directed.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that only people who haven't seen Juno would even contemplate describing it as edgy, much less edgier than Lady Bird (remind me which one's got the PG-13 rating and which one's got the R-rating again?).

Some movies from director John Cassavetes can be a chore to sit through, but there's always something I like about them. This one had more of a plot than I expected, and it was a plot that suited my taste. Ben Gazzara is so brilliant in this, and the supporting cast is right up there. The 70's mood and atmosphere is on full display, and the little details are all just right. It feels a little disjointed in some ways, but in other ways it feels perfect. I watched the director's cut, which is shorter. I'd like to see the theatrical cut as well.

The Trial (1962, Orson Welles)
3.5
Technically, this is a magnificent film. The cinematography/shot composition, mise-en-scène, lighting, editing, acting, and of course Orson Welles' direction are all top notch. So many extraordinary shots worthy of being framed and hung in an art gallery - but still, I did not enjoy it nearly as much as I had hoped to. I felt it was too long, too cold, too claustrophobic, too relentless in its assault on the senses. It felt more like an exercise in form than anything else, while I was expecting a somewhat different approach. Sure, it's Kafka, and it's supposed to be all those things - well, I guess it's just not my cup of tea, then. Welles' style is impressive, no doubt, but time and time again I feel that it oppresses and overwhelms me more than it enlightens me.

The disaster artist

James Franco is unrecognisable. He becomes Tommy. Not sure if it was intended but it’s not a straight comedy. It’s more a casual glimpse at something that happened that is very bizarre. That is - The life of Tommy and his friend when they decided to become actors and later make The Room.

Some very funny moments sprinkled throughout. Not sure if anyone else noticed but Tommy explained that he was in a car crash early on in the film. For a good portion of the film I thought maybe he had an acquired brain injury. That sort of dulled the comedy and I stopped laughing at Tommy. Plus Franco plays it so well it’s hard to keep laughing at the guy, he’s no doubt a massive weirdo but a sympathetic one.

Worth watching for a bit of a laugh, for some good acting by Franco and a bit of Hollywood history.

The Super

Stephan Rick

https://i.imgur.com/dP7arIP.jpg?1

1.5

I'm a Val Kilmer fan. I don't know why, I don't know when, all I know is that I like his performances and the movies he is in. That was until his Hollywood star faded after the box office bomb that was Red Planet and unfortunately he hasn't had a real leading man role in Hollywood since. Some great performances came afterwards in more independent films such as The Salton Sea, Wonderland and Spartan. But if I were to look at his filmography for the last ten years I see the criminally underrated Felon, the overlooked MacGruber and a small supporting role in The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans. The rest of his movies are trash. Then The Snowman came out. I kept seeing ads for this and seeing his name associated with it, but not once did I see him in any of the marketing. I was under the impression he would be the killer. Little did I know it was due to his poor health appearance and clearly dubbed dialogue. The film was trashed by everyone and their grandmothers with a lot of people pointing out the glaring issues with having Val Kilmer in the role. Well he's back with another movie, post-cancer diagnosis and he doesn't look or sound that much better. Are Val Kilmer's acting days possibly behind him? Maybe Top Gun 2 will answer that question.

The Super focuses on a man who becomes a superintendent to an upscale New York apartment building. He lives in the basement with his two daughters, but feels uneasy whenever the old-timer super Walter (Val Kilmer) is around them. He's creepy, is obsessed with voodoo dolls and mutters weird things under his breath. To make matters worse, people in the apartment building start disappearing under mysterious circumstances. Can the new superintendent protect his kids and discover what exactly Walter is up to?

The Super seems to be pulling a fast one on some people that didn't expect some turns in the story. I applaud the filmmakers for making an effort, but I feel little clues they drop throughout the film make it glaringly obvious who's who and what's what. The Super tries to have it two ways; is it a serial killer thriller or supernatural mystery. The problem is that it tries to juggle both of these genres and it drops the ball. An intriguing opening sequence makes you think one thing, then the reveal towards the end splits the difference making it awkward to look back on the earlier efforts.

Val Kilmer does a decent job as the creepy super. Unfortunately his dialogue is dubbed over again. It's not only him this time though, a few scenes they do this do other people, including a crucial scene filled with exposition that really takes you out of the experience when words don't match lips.

One of my biggest gripes is the climax here. One character is told that her twin sister was responsible for a fire that killed their mother. In a fit of rage their father killed the girl and he is now haunted by her demonic spirit. He can see her and acts like she is still alive. Walter can see her because he practices weird voodoo. That's the twist in this film, that the one younger daughter is actually dead and is controlling her father to kill a bunch of people in an apartment building for childish reasons (She wanted an old lady's dog, she hated her teacher, she disliked her sisters new friend, etc) Sure whatever, pull the dead the whole time card. This little girl appears out of thin air to this woman because we are to believe that she is next on her hit list. The woman runs away into the elevator...poof the little girl reappears in the elevator. At this point, this woman is terrified because she's seeing some sh*t.

Then we get to the climax in the basement. Walter manages to subdue the little girl and perform some voodoo magic on her to destroy this demonic ghost. She is trapped within a circle and is burning up. So what does this woman, who has just seen the impossible happen regarding this little girl do? She hits Walter in the head to get him to stop hurting her. This demon ghost child that controls her father to become a killing machine. Stop it she says, she's just a girl. But she isn't, you know this, you just saw her perform some David Blaine/Chris Angel sh*t. So why on earth are you knocking out the one guy who is saving you? It makes no sense, it's all in a sad effort to make the good guys lose.

Walter is on the floor and daddy comes over and kills him. Then the girl says she wants a new mommy. Now we have daddy, daughter, dead daughter and new mother walk out of the apartment. New mommy asks, what do we do now and daddy responds, whatever my dead daughter wants. Telling me he knows she is dead and knows she possesses him to kill others, but he doesn't care.

^^^ TRASH.

Up until that point it was a tolerable film with faults. The end result is a frustrating one that makes no sense. It's a little embarrassing when you write a script thinking you are so clever and no one will see 'this' coming, only to have it be a joke and hurt the overall product. The Super....ain't super.

Bad dum tss.

The Man Who Planted Trees . This is the kind of 'small' ' masterpiece I may never have known about if it hadn't been for Ultraviolence 's post. What a beautiful film. A story so mesmerizing it sounds as if it was real, voiced by the hypnotic narration of Christopher Plummer, and an animation so lovely, it was if illustrated by Monet.

When I say ''small' masterpiece I am talking about the length of the film, not its power and excellence. To see it is to enter into a dream. As a nature lover, and a film lover, I thank you
Ultraviolence for letting me know about the type of film that gives respite and joy to our day. .

I think I've seen this before.... oh yeah, just about every giant fish/snake/squid movie since Jaws. Wasn't expecting much but it still managed to under deliver. Think it would've been more enjoyable if it was made in the late 70's with a cardboard shark and Pam Grier leading the way.

Don't know why I watched this movie, maybe because Vin Diesel was my hero while growing up, was that badass I wanted to be, all radical and strong, you know the type. I remember this director bragging about making the movie with a 70 million dollars budget like that's small cash, in my country we like to say: 'God gives walnuts to persons without teeths. Without any question this movie have the most badass entry I've ever saw, I mean, Vin Diesel with a snow jacket, plus a camo rain vest walking on a street with a big anti-america mural filled with mercenaries with Kalashnikov's and brutal background rap song? Made the movie, you might not want to watch the movie, but at least watch the entry.

THE EQUALIZER 2 (2018)
https://screenanarchy.com/assets/2018/04/Equalizer%202.jpg
The most important aspect in The Equalizer's movies is banality, and that banality is the relation, connection between the viewers and the character. This hero is a very normal, regular person: 8-hours job, simple house, ride the train or a standard car, drink tea, read books, have normal neighbor conversations and a unattractive social life, but he had something unusual to someone with such a life, the overcoming of loneliness by showing compassion, of caring about someone he has never meet and that is very unusual in any big city or in the world, that normally drives to frustration, depression and anger. All this patterns, emotions could have made a good movie, if they thought about a different skill for the character, not the killings, they just made it vulgar. Even so, I enjoyed those two hours of film, because I can relate myself in the character.

The Hitch-Hiker (1953) by Ida Lupino

An interesting film noir by one of the only female directors in Hollywood in the fifties. The acting is quite good, but the manuscript does not really hold up to a feature film. The next film by Lupino is going to be The Bigamist, also from 1953.

Halloween

(David Gordon Green)

3.5

Halloween is an interesting film. It blew up at the box-office and over performed. Why is that? Was it good marketing? Good timing of release? The talent involved? I think it has to do with all that mixed in a blender, but I'd lean more towards the fact that we have David Gordon Green and Danny McBride bringing Myers back to the big screen. Look at the Nightmare On Elm Street remake for example. The director has nothing but music videos on his resume. The film felt and looked so generic that it didn't stand out. You have a guy in that film who can kill you in your dreams, but the CGI mess and lack of creativity hurts it. Then we have the Friday the 13th remake which fares a little better, but is directed by yet another music video guy. I'm not saying music video directors are bad, I'm saying they usually have a style. That style is 'frantic' and it fit the Platinum Dunes vision. Finally look at the Rob Zombie Halloween. Zombie is a music video director...granted it's his own music videos but whatever. The difference with him is he loves the genre, but has only made one decent film. His obsession is in the wrong place for Michael Myers, he wants the violence and gore, the dirty and grotesque. That doesn't really fit with the Myers lore. So why does this film feel different? It has patience.

40 years after the events of the first film, Laurie Strode still hasn't moved on. She has become a recluse, transforming her home into a makeshift panic room of sorts. This obsession with the masked killer has cost her everything. Her daughter won't speak to her, her granddaughter has little to no relationship with her and she has multiple failed marriages. When she learns that Michael Myers has escaped after a prisoner transfer mishap, she decides to put those decades of training and waiting into use. The hunter becomes the hunted.

But not really. The last act in this film had potential, but I feel like it falls just below of being satisfied. She had 40 years to prepare and we get her with a gun closing doors basically. It could have been more of a Horror-Home Alone scenario which could have been interesting. A little underwhelming for my taste, but the package as a whole was indeed satisfying. Green and McBride show their love for the original with all the winks and nods. There are so many references and homages to Carpenter's Halloween that I know I must have missed a few. The opening credits has that orange font, classic soundtrack and a pumpkin. Oooh, the nostalgia. But something is different, the pumpkin is rotted and slowly reversing back to its original form. This is McBride and Green telling us right from the start that they are going back to basics. They are reviving this monster, this evil.

The film is self aware, Strode even calls the new doctor "New Loomis". Basically saying what the audience is thinking. I do wish the film had taken more of an interest in Strode and less in the cardboard cutout teens that get killed. Maybe dive more into her PTSD, her family problems, make this a deeper character study. It's hard to ignore the themes present in this film though, very timely with the #MeToo movement. There is one shot in particular where we see the three generations of women banded together that feels like a punctuation point. Judy Greer plays the daughter and she has one moment that was a crowd-pleaser. I'm not too familiar with Andi Matichak who plays the granddaughter, she does an okay job, nothing stands out from her performance though.

A great one-take of Myers going on a small killing spree was delightful. As was the gas station bathroom showdown. Sequences like these show that this was a passion project and not cash grab. There is a lot of attention to detail here, we even get a shot of the neck wound Myers sustained from the original film. I wonder if Green will come back for the inevitable sequel.

This is the funniest Korean movie I've ever saw in my entire life, in the good sense. A rape crime scene without any pubic hair fond so the genius detective (Kang-ho Song) goes to a spa for a full day to find the a suspect without a bush? Those front kicks to the suspects, Jesus, is incredible, no punches, no nothing, double feet front kicks. I just love Korean acting, is so genuine. Overlord
rating_3_5

It may or may not be a Cloverfield/Fringe film, but it is a surprisingly excellent horror film. A number of things in the film made zero to no sense and the historical accuracy of certain parts of the film are ridiculous. It also has a bad case of poor casting where every character has a gimmick and once the gimmick is revealed and the character becomes pointless prepare yourself to say goodbye to said character.

So why is this film a borderline 4 star film...well to be slightly vague it's the best certain type of film I've seen in 40 years.

The other reason why this is so good is a number of the set pieces, action and horror parts are just so well made and perfectly put together. The War scenes work really well, the horror scenes work really well and when you can move past the criminally one dimensional identity'd characters you can actually have fun with this.

Have to say it's a much easier watch than the other Pasolini film I've seen (Salo). I had a feeling this would be a real slog to get through but it moved along pretty quick. There's nothing flashy here. Just a simple re-telling of the Gospel.

I've heard a few people bring up Overlord's possible ties to the Cloverfield universe, but having just seen the film, I have no idea why that theory even exists.

It's possible that I missed some big clue in Overlord, and to be fair I haven't actually seen Cloverfield (though I have seen 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox). very strange movie but i could tell that ssh had all his intentions in the right place. his attention to detail and timing are super. so many great moments and sight gags, not to mention a killer and totally 80's soundtrack that is dominated by rush producer rupert hine. so again, it's a strange movie. squid cooking in the pot with tentacles moving, a green gelatin crawling away at the dinner table, a scene where booger estimates the street value of actual mountain snow and tries to pass it off as a serious joke, a cartoon drawing coming to life in the cafeteria at high school..and a lot more weirdness. I love this movie. it's just the right blend of surreal and broad, and it always satisfies me. i used to not give it much due because i was 11 and i figured a PG film wasn't as good as an R film. Wrong.

When I saw the trailer I though this movie had everything I would like, lots of snow, I love cold weather, wolves, the animal I most fear and love, native Americans, empathize a lot with there culture and Jeffrey Wright on the main roll. I was thinking more about a horror movie, but came out as a dramatic very dark suspense instead. Most people hated this movie, mainly because it catches your attention and then drives you to nowhere. I believe the story telling could make a very important detail a little more obvious, that detail is incest. Directors nowadays are trying to hide certain aspects while making a movies to make people think about what they saw, some people end up hating them, those who care write a review, other never think about it until they see it again years later.

Creep 2

I thought the first creep was very good. It’s creeped me out. This is trash. Midway through I thought this can’t be it , there must be some payoff, something scary, something interesting, some twist likely to happen, it must be building to it. I was wrong. It just nothing, nothing interesting. Two boring unpleasant characters talking about nonsense. Then both miraculously recover from something that happens to them at the end of the film. Lol, what. The first movie was a slow build horror, this is a slow...as we are not building to anything and nothing horrifying.

Black Canadians were not segregated into their own battalions in WW2, so that didn't even occur to me. I don't think that historical inaccuracies like that really matter though, especially considering the other fantastic elements of the film. Having black and white soldiers serving together in WW2 doesn't exactly connect it to Cloverfield in any meaningful way either, or at least not in a way that I am immediately seeing.

If the argument for it being included in that universe is just that the events are not 100% accurate to real life, then every other film made can be considered part of that franchise. I was hoping for something more concrete than that. Overlord's supposed ties to the Cloverfield films sound like a rumour that started before the film's release, and so far it doesn't seem to have any merit, which is why I'm asking.

I watched this because it's from the same director as Amores Perros, which I loved, and because I like Javier Bardem. This movie lacks the crackling energy of Amores Perros but it is equally well made. It's an emotionally powerful movie, but not so much to where I didn't feel it's 2 hours and 20 minutes. There's quality at every turn and it's well worth watching, but for me it just barely missed the mark.

Engaging and interesting coming of age drama that sees a loner trapped on an isle (Matthew McConaughey) following an action trying to preserve the thing he loved. The 2 teen actors make this a joy. The story itself is a bit hokey but the performances more than make up for that. 8/10.

I think when you are dealing with a Bad Robot project you should pay attention to any and all historical anachronisms. I'm also assuming you never watched the TV show Fringe which I now think is tied to Cloverfield.

You also have the black pit, the technological advances and the mutagens that you see in Cloverfield and Cloverfield Paradox

I only saw the first episode or two. Are its ties to Cloverfield just a personal theory, or has it been confirmed by anyone involved? I've never heard it brought up before, so that could be an interesting development if it's true.

What black pit?

Do you mean that hole in the middle of the room that Asbæk's character fell into during the fight with Wyatt Russell?
I don't recall a black pit being mentioned in the other films. Is it important in Fringe or something?

This is a dramatic comedy, is a filmed testament of someone I deeply enjoy and I will never totally understand (João César Monteiro), I'm not sure If I want to understand honestly, is somehow the lessons he took from his life where you could see his anarchistic views, from religion to politics and philosophy to art where he shares his worries about the meaning of his existence. Is a very long movie, with very little cuts, almost in the same scenarios, all at the rhythm of an old man watching life, contemplating the landscapes and buildings of Lisbon, having his last pleasures. Always with the same incendiary desire of affronting the conceptions, with the same irreverence expressing opinions using taboo materials with the fascination for the women genre, using them as his alter-ego to express his various ideologies. When I see this kind of movies I get depressed, they make me think, I've watched it too many times.

UFO (2018)

I'm a little surprised that I liked this picture. The title is a groaner, and there really is no resolution to the story; chiefly because it's a dramatization of the work allegedly done by a university graduate school mathematician, responding to several UFO sightings at airports.

To me it was a different approach to the subject matter. Granted, I'm fascinated by the subject of UFOs, and have been since 1957!

But I was impressed by the actors making sense of this different but simple story. Alex Sharp turned in an excellent performance as the grad student mathematician. Gillian Anderson was convincing as Sharp's professor, and David Strathairn handed in another nice performance as the Government authority.

There were no aliens or dramatic special effects. But the narrative held my interest. I believe that we'll be seeing a lot more of Mr. Sharp.

In Fringe you have an alternate american history...two towers still stand people use Zepplins to travel around in the US state lines are different.

I don't know if the Well is some sort of dimensional portal which was the point of Cloverfield paradox or what.

Oh another tie, the lead character is from Louisiana same location as 10 Cloverfield Lane. So I don't know what any of this means I'm sure you'll get Youtube videos about Easter Eggs when the film comes out on DVD and people can dissect every scene.

ms. mouly surya (and co) did tremendous job on these, for combining Ozu-istic still framing and composition but with widescreen, Leone-ism western vibe that's glaringly captured the beauty of Sumba's landscape. Completed by -such praiseworthy- subtleness, symbolism~juxtaposition and surreal moments, its never actually impose much on what could be an exploitative nature of the basic premise, by impression.
these typical quassi-arthouse still rare in contemporary indonesian cinema or barely nonexistent, almost if not for garin nugroho's. could be starting point, precursor for "indonesian new wave" in the future? one could hope so

cherrypicking:
while the story -for what could be in " native standard"- is downright liberating, provoke introspection of that same old social construct issue, the strong and dominant traditional patriarchs values against the always abused women's right (whatever pseudo-int terms one could use) somehow feel just one way straightforward, bit shallow and thin, perspective-wise. some unnecessary freedom in storytelling is granted by the respective filmaker, but pretentiously say one will have different creative decision on what could had in mind.
Other -likely personal- problem that one has tendency with local cinema is the dialogs and there's no exception, even this ocassion. while the intriguingly puzzled, lovely use of local dialect, thing occasionally feel a bit short, off putting especially talk for some of its supporting casts whom feel inconsistent and try hard in delivery, rub one in wrong, bothersome way.

Inspired by the 1992 hit film, the film's 1st half is slow and is hampered by Christy Chung's annoying spoiled brat character. However, the film picks up in the second action-packed half, with Collin Chou and Jet Li's climactic fight being a damn good one with a nice twist of leaking gas being a factor in the mix with Chou's kicks vs. Li's fast hands.

3.0: Solid installment of the WWE Films' prolific franchise has Mike Mizanin return as Jake Carter (in his fourth film) and WWE legend Shawn Michaels play his former commanding officer. Together, they must rescue a girl from a notorious kidnapping gang led by WWE superstar Becky Lynch. More hand-to-hand fighting and minimal gunplay for this installment, the reason I gave it 3 out of 5 is that a shocking twist happens in the last fifteen minutes of the film that brings in a bit of a shock and it is not a predictable one either.

A very powerful coming-of-age film that melds religion and identity in the case of 17-year old Summer, whose mother abruptly converts to the Muslim religion, forcing Summer to re-evaluate herself. Great performances from newcomer Zoe Renee and Simone Missick, who plays the mother.

Losey navigates this cryptic, Kafkaesque 'loss-of-identity' parable down its metaphysical winding road with dry detachment, bookending it between two shocking immersions into the historic reality of the moment - from the matter-of-factly disturbing opening sequence to the dizzying, apocalyptically fatalistic finale.
