Yeah, read the reviews from others after I rated it here - not normally my cup of tea but it's a decent enough version that's quite sumptuous in places.

El Camino Christmas (2017)
Dir: David E. Talbert
Don't be fooled into thinking this is a unique and worthy entry into Christmas movie territory, because it is not. This has got to be the absolute worst movie I've seen in a long, long time. It crawls with its pacing, which would be fine if there were anything good to offer. The ideal location is wasted with "cinematography" that mimics only the finest of Red Epic sensors. Yeah, that's right. This looks so digitally shot that news anchor footage shows no visible difference. Jessica Alba is pregnant and wasting our time being boring and insignificant. Kurtwood Smith plays an idiot sheriff and has not one funny line. Vincent D'Onofrio completely sucks, though he does manage to act like an A-hole well enough. According to Andrew McCarthy, I'm guessing this wasn't a stretch. TIM ALLEN is in this. He gets those "profound" moments that no one has earned, least of all the writer of this turkey movie. So we have a slow burn with zero payoff and violence that is so out of left field that we spend the whole film completely lost of any tone or sense of identity. If you watch this movie, it's your own damn fault. Consider yourself warned. This is trash.
Merry Christmas, BTW.

Enjoyable enough and the music choices were a blast with the hysteria scenes but something was missing. Probably would have been better without Greg McLean; and definitely needed a stronger ending. Still, I got the recommendation from here nd had never heard of it before mofo. Glad I saw it. Sure beat Jim Carrey as The Grinch.
The bad guy selection was to on the nose for me...the middle aged white dudes felt too cliche'd. Battle Royale had a variety of bad guys Mitsuko (femme fatale) and lighthouse girls I believe elevated the work

Battle Royale was great. I really need to see it again.
Still laughing at the music choices. Really made it quite fun, but something was just a bit flat. Cant put my finger on it. Still, I would watch this again just for the scene with a mob running up the stairs screaming.

I watched this because I like Aubrey Plaza. She plays an unbalanced chick who stalks people through social media and then in person. Her new target is a famous photographer out in California played by Elizabeth Olsen. I would call this a dark comedy, but it never gets too dark, and I think that may be what prevents there being anything special about the movie. The performances and characters are all pretty good, and it's a pretty decent watch overall. My wife liked it about the same as I did.

This was a nice watch. The story was very familiar, i mean even for films/shows about jewish fathers this was like a carbon copy but it had a good script and performances. Dustin Hoffman's character was hilarious i think the film would have been better if he was in it throughout but that's obviously a completely different film. Definitely among Stiller and Sandler's best work which may not sound like much but they were both very good, Sandler especially.

While i liked this i wanted to like it more, thought this was going to be a new favourite. It reminded me of a spaghetti western with the music and over the top death scenes. I did like it, i liked all the maneuvering, the betrayals, never knowing who was one who's side, etc. Also the main character and his harakiri brother were great. I felt some of the acting and humour wasn't very good, and the opening scene leading to the main character being arrested was horribly filmed; so chaotic and not in a good way. Still interested in seeing more in the series and i did have a good time but i was a little disappointed as i expected more.

So not bright I couldnt see anything and fell asleep. If you took out all the f bombs, violence, and killing a faery in the first 5 minutes it would have been a cute 1 minute cop bromance to show kids not to grow in to racist bastards. I was annoyed in the opening when a wife nagged her husband to kill the faery before he'd even finished his coffee - yeah that's gonna work for a person who has just woken up. Actually, I dont know why he drank it in the first place when she left a napkin in it. Disgusting, so yeah the opening was enough for me. I dont rate this movie other than to say Joel was as good as he could be wearing all that avatar/lord of the rings makeup.

I heard someone talking about how they may have pitched Airwolf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8syGlAMTKA)back in the day.
"So...we have a really awesome helicopter that looks like a jet and it comes out of a volcano." Done.
I can only imagine how they pitched Bright.
"Okay. We want to make Training Day crossed with Tolkien." Done.
The stuff just didn't work. The Orcs looked horrible and having them dress in football jerseys with chains on top, flatbills, and a constant pose of "about to throw up gang signs" just elicits cringe. Will Smith appeared to have given up on trying, while Edgerton just played a Gomer Pyle'ish one-trick pony.
The bright spot were the Elves, which should have had more time. I've always loved Noomi Rapace and I definitely need to contact Minio to see what he knows about Elf-fiction. They should have been in the forefront, while pushing the orc stories into the background.
They were obviously planning to jump off a series with this, but it kinda d.o.a.'ed.
LOL. I love that thumbs up in the video. Hey, let's blow sht up and be super joyful.
I didnt dislike the movie the way Iro did but the one thing I took away from it is LA is the dirty, stinking dump Americans tell me it is. Gee, and I thought LAX was filthy and full of bully boys in positions of power. Oh well, guess I'm not seeing that place any time soon.
Does the little faery passenger of the black cop and the ork cop actually say anything understandable or just squeak elvish and scream in a high pitched manner the whole time? I saw an Australian hollywood suck up reviewer yesterday say this was Lucy Fry's meal ticket to a huge movie career in Hollywood. Urm, yeah about as much as Karate Kid 2 and After Earth was a hollywood springboard for Will's kid.

Friday After Next (2002)
dir: Marcus Raboy 2.5
You're not gonna get better than F. Gary Gray's original with Cube writing his fresh screenplay, and with Chris Tucker as Smokey. This 3rd installment of the ghetto comedy series is trying too hard just like Next Friday did, and it wears you down. The jokes are mostly improvised and it seems like most of the players were just shooting air balls. Nothing is very funny but the energy is still there, though it has no real direction. The story is simple and messy. As far as being a decent Christmas movie, I guess it's OK. There's plenty of lights and trees, and the opening title card sequence is a nice throwback animated piece.
My friend and I noticed, especially in daytime sky shots, that this movie has a very darkened filmic look, almost vignetted around the edges at points, and certainly textural with grain and dirty flurries. It wasn't noise, either. It had that gritty look we both love. So it's definitely a movie-movie. That is going for Friday After Next. Some of the music chosen was nice. Good beats and deep staccato bass lines thumping. Sounded like a 5 string bass or maybe even some moog keys laying it down. It helped a tiny bit with the action and pacing, but didn't save it from its eventual failure to be an engaging film, overall.
I was often embarrassed at how hard the team was trying to be funny. My hand found itself covering my mouth quite a bit. It's not without some chuckles but all in all this movie isn't very good.

I've always liked Meyers and the cast (watch out for Dustin Hoffman in a surprise cameo), so it's not that surprising for me. I thought it was a very good "feel-good" movie, which is something I seriously needed after killing so many bedbugs earlier. Some were really annoyed with Diaz to the point of wanting to cut her out of the movie, but I didn't feel that way at all. I honestly liked everything about it, but hey, that's just me.

Spoilers I didn't read any reviews or watch any trailers prior. I had heard many comments like shocking, disturbing, and divisive, and I knew who the director and cast were. Based on the information I had, I expected to love it. Unfortunately it'll most likely go down as my most disappointing movie of the year. The first half was ok, even if it did seem like a Rosemary's Baby knockoff. Then I thought it just got more annoying and ridiculous. Even while it was ok, I thought it was an average horror movie except with an above average cast and director. Even the rest of the movie felt like a rehash of many movies I had seen before. There were good moments and the cast was good, most notably Michelle Pfeiffer. The attack on mother was shockingly brutal but that was it. They ate the baby big deal. Ultimately it reminded me of Cabin in the Woods. They're both movies that go bananas and try very hard to turn all conventions upside down. I thought that sucked and I thought this sucked too. My wife also thought it sucked.
Yeah you can deny that it's shocking but you can't deny it's polarizing! Just like my sunglasses!

No need for spoilers at all - the dialogue is the primary fault, truly atrocious at times, and the acting suffers badly as a result. Stiff direction doesn't do much for it either. Not watching it would definitely be my recommendation though to fully appreciate my previous one-liner one might actually need to I suppose :(

It's not like it has an abundance of flaws or anything, but this is not John Hughes's best work. However, It has just the right amount of charm, great writing, and even some heart-warming elements to result in a film of decent substance. (Plus, I was totally unaware of how good Macaulay Culkin was in this. For a kid, he's absolutely brilliant.)

This one is a long and storied family tradition, but I've formed my own appreciation for it. It's Mom's all-time favorite movie and it's easy to see why. The performances by Stewart and the rest of cast and a timeless message of hope and perseverance combine for a movie that rewards multiple viewings. George Bailey is at a point where he's tired, frustrated and ready to give up, but by the end he realizes, and the audience does, too, just how important it is to not give up on life and that's just as relevant now as it was over 70 years ago.

This is director S. Craig Zahler's follow-up to Bone Tomahawk and he's two for two as far as I'm concerned. I'm looking forward to his next movie, Dragged Across Concrete, which will star Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn. Vaughn seems to have gotten a lot of accolades for this movie, and I thought he was good but not great. His performance pretty much hits the same note all the way through. It works so there's no knocking him. The plot is extremely basic, much like this year's also excellent Shot Caller. A dude ends up in prison and has to do bad things to protect his family on the outside. Both of this director's movies have gone at a slower pace, but he shows good timing as to when to turn up the action and violence. What we end up with is a grittier and more realistic type of movie as opposed to the average action/crime film that gets churned out these days.

The Neon Demon (2016)
dir: he'll let you know in the credits for sure
I like abstract movies, especially ones that have lots of pretty scenes, sets, props, colors, movements, etc - but for me to like these kinds of movies, something has to accompany it. Humor, drama, some heart, some laughs, some suspense.
The Neon Demon is completely empty. The writing meanders so bad as to have Keanu Reeves play a pointless role as a sleazy hotel "rapist"(?). We never find out, thankfully. All I got were female models being completely shltty to each other. OK, I get it. That's the point. But the "innocent" character is so self centered, she calls up her make-up girl for a place to crash while she's witnessing a rape/murder in the hotel room next door. Doesn't bother to call the police. I guess it wouldn't be stylish or appropriately edgy to actually have a conscience. That'd be logic and clearly this film wants to avoid logic or good will or responsibility. So why should I care about anything then? Tell me why.
So, yeah. Not my kind of movie. Nothing for me. Nothing except lots of pretty colors, schemes, lights and glitter. It's an art student's wet dream, but not much else. Guess I'm not into sick minded movies like this. Guess I'm not cool anymore.
That's OK.
1.5 - for the design work throughout.

Spoilers This is one of those "based on real events" type of horror/crime films. It's the kind of movie that's right up my alley, the kind that I'll like more than most people do. The Aussies do this kind of thing as good or better than anyone. Set in Perth in the 1980's, an apparent serial killer couple abduct a local teen girl with the lure of some good weed. Before she realizes what kind of trouble she's in, she's chained to a bed. The man is a wimp outside the house and the wife is jealous of the girl. It's a well made movie with strong acting. It's terrifying and upsetting without relying on extreme violence. My only minor issue was with the ending. I was hoping for a happy ending, but when it was over, I knew it would have been better had I been devastated. The closing song sucked. Overall I mostly loved the movie.

Scrooged (1988)
Watched this on Christmas Eve. Always try for a Christmas movie and this was a first watch. Being a first watch there was no nostalgia and ehhhhh i just thought it was ok. Never really had a Lol moment or even much of a chuckle. Maybe I made a few grunting noises. One of the employees he fired, the guy from Police Academy..he was essentially playing the same character he did in Police academy and it felt out of place. It’s watchable, not terrible but not a movie I’d watch again.
It makes me want to see a very serious and dark Scrooge movie. One set in our modern day, maybe with technology, selfishness, money, power themes mixed of course with the supernatural past, present and future. Hopefully Spielberg or Dennis vellenueve read this post and make it happen. Hope Disney doesnt read it as they have ruined enough.

Rough Night isn't a terrible film per say but it gets more things wrong than right. This Hangover/Ghostbusters(2015) hybrid tries very hard to make women funny but much like how Chris Hemsworth stole the show in Ghostbusters the men stole the shot in Rough Night. Mush like with how in Ghostbusters Wiig and McCarthey both tried to play the Bill Murray role, three of the women tried to play the Zach Gallifankis role. The humor is also very soft R where if you are making a film like this you need to shock the audience it doesn't do that.
But don't get me wrong it's watchable and some of the jokes work it's just a deeply flawed and uninspired film. It just works best when the leads are off the screen.
It looked to me from the trailer as an all-girl casting (yet another all-female remake of a previously male-dominated cast movie) of Very Bad Things. Was that impression wrong?

:popcorn::popcorn: For an Alexander Payne film this is a bit of a let down. I liked the message but there was a real opportunity lost when something that should have been explored and I thought they set it up earlier in the film as well. I won't get any more spoilery.
I saw this on Thursday (the day it was released) and I was sorely disappointed. It was trying to do too much and was all over the place with the social commentary. It was if the movie was trying to fit in every single liberal criticism of the world in a single movie. Also, the entire point of the protagonist seemed to be to suffer at the hands of women. If he could be incredibly long-suffering at the hands of women, then he was a "good man" and, thus, was finally worthy of acceptance and/or love (even though it meant giving up everything including his future, his dreams and even his life). The movie also wasted some amazingly incredible talent in small parts and off-beat roles.
The only good thing that I can say about the movie is that there was an unusually clear distinction between the acts: Act I - the normal world, Act II - Leisureland and Act III - Norway.
It looked to me from the trailer as an all-girl casting (yet another all-female remake of a previously male-dominated cast movie) of Very Bad Things. Was that impression wrong?
I had never heard of it and had to look it up. Good god what was she thinking. I agree with one of the reviewers on imdb - women just arent funny in that idiotic toilet humour genre. And with all the australians in hollywood they gave the role of an australian to an american? Bloody hell. I might check it our just when I feel like something totally cringe worthy.
And your review of downsizing looks horrendous. Sounds very divisive to me and I just cant stand that.

Well, okay, it's just total rehearse so far from couple of early episodes which ofc i will enjoy it, these typical gritty and grim version of it ultraman story trope. Problem i guess the pacing did emotionally rushed, condensed for one feature, but guess i got this problem too with the tv series and hideaki anno's work, sort of. animation itself.. I dont think so much different by quality gap from years ago, it's just much cleaner with strong saturation. the use of cgi on certain aspects, did feel lessering. still every battle sakuga is definitely remain top notch.

I'm narrow minded with music and don't even recall ever hearing of them. I was harsh with what I said though. I thought the song at that moment sucked, but it's common for me to not care for a song for 30 years and then suddenly have it become a favorite if I hear it at the right time.

I dont have the words to rate it. I've never liked Carla although I've only seen her in Entourage and Prison Break and she always plays a ball breaker. She sure cant play nice - I thought she was terrible. A few laugh out loud moments but that's about it. I should have read the book instead.

Imagine Very Bad Things but with the theme and tones of American Pie.
It's got okay sex jokes, the characters are fine but it never really gets into that next gear. You don't really laugh hard and you aren't really shocked at anything.

This was a weird one for me. For the first half i was thinking to myself "thought this would be better" then suddenly i got really into its script and themes. Iirc Raul had a similar experience saying he liked it more when he thought about it and he thinks it could be a favourite on a rewatch. I don't know if it could become a favourite of mine but i definitely want to see it again. Ronan was excellent, liked Metcalf too but i think she is getting a little overpraised right now because the complicated mother role is something that really appeals to people; Ronan was better. Anyway i liked this alot despite not being sure at first.

About 30 minutes in, I thought I was going to be irritated by this film. And It's journey through obnoxious, uninteresting, unstable teenage-girly nonsense painted as some "coming-of-age" tale. (And no, the mentioning of "girly" does not make me, or my statement 'sexist.' I know several about to reply now. I KNOW WHO YOU ARE! I SEE YOU THERE!)
Then the film took some different directions, although not resulting in anything 'too' in-depth. However, some of them actually made me a bit emotional. (I was actually getting misty-eyed during a certain scene.) However, in the end, after about an hour more of the film: I don't really think I cared a whole lot about everything else that transpired. Sure, the ending was somewhat deep and redeemed some of the more simplistic thematic elements that were present throughout the film. I adored the writing, some of the humor, the main character and the relationship with her mother. But I don't see myself re-watching this any time soon. It might need to grow on me.

Well if that had been done, everything about it would have been different, so yeah, it would have been better. Tha movie was so bad it actually pissed me off. Complete waste of Fassbender, awful editing, and wtf, was Alfredson phoning it in or something? I read afterwards they didn't shoot the whole script or something to that effect. What a mess.

It was labelled as a horror film but that's a stretch in my opinion. It's a post apocalyptic, slow burn thriller and it's good. I think this will be a love it or hate it movie since it leaves you with a lot of questions and very few, if any, answers. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. pretty much let down, and you cant redo this one. i can see how this being divisive as the previous set the bar so high and it simply couldnt live up the hype on many aspects.
the story follow the previous cliffhanger event -with the possible third impact ,and it did- and also prove me wrong about confirm chara that still/will live. poor the "previous" rei, poor suzuhara-is he been trolled here lol-
other members is still alive, bizarrely form rebel faction against their former nerve/seele, which bizarrely only left ikari and fuyutsuki. asuka is still kick ass tsundere, mari remain and been kept mysterious which is frustating, and misato and co just really lack of development. nagisa kaoru chara is something to add for, still make mistake and die in style like a martyr.
funny that i read after this installment, anno had been depression state, again, tho' likely in short term. just showed how sensitive and fragile an artist could be. this showing again how reminiscene he with shinji's character. the essence of it was he convinced himself already do the right thing, but later prove that there something consequence he cant redo? i guess so
3 - seeing shinji intentionally left on jeopardy state again and again is suck, because he is stupid and tend to make stupid decision.

'The Snowman' is bad on a technical level, and a storytelling perspective. It's a hack-studio flop where the director didn't even shoot the whole script, while the unfinished film was butchered in post-editing.
'Three Billboards' is a marvel, and one the most impactful films that I've seen in years. Never in such a long time have I cared for characters this hard, or seen them go in some many different directions that I didn't even expect. However (much like Martin McDonagh's previous work), the film has a lot of polarizing aspects that are bound to turn off some audiences. You know in 'In Bruges', where the main character kills a kid and has this "head-scratching" journey through guilt, talkings of hell and sin. Then the antagonist kills himself for doing the same thing after shaming our main character for doing just that, while the entire film tries to have an 'ironic' contrast between historic flemish beauty and modern vulgarity as the violence increases until the end. Well, 3BB has a lot of that stuff.
People are upset because of the events that transpire in the story, and the film's moral ambiguity during our troubled times. There's some that even call it racist. (Which... I don't even get. :skeptical:) But like I said earlier: It's a Martin McDonaugh film. No-one should have really expected this to be a crowd-pleaser.
Why?
I don’t know, actually. I guess I think no one’s really seen Michael Clayton and it’s funny that that connection could be considered a selling point.

Apparently Martin Scorsese was slated to direct the film, but left and switched to executive producer. So they got Tomas Alfredson at the last second while the film was already in production. So everything became so rushed, that they forgot to film 10-15% of the movie. And instead of trying to film the rest, they decided to fix the entire movie through editing.

I watched this because it's on the documentary list and eligible for the female directors countdown. It's about evangelical children, how into their religion they are, their mentors, and ultimately a camp they attend. It's a fine film but I wasn't especially interested. I'm not looking to disparage anybody's religion but it appeared to me that these particular children were being practically brainwashed. I found that to be bothersome, and my guess is that was the goal of the filmmakers. If so, they succeeded.

I had high hopes for this film, since Fischer's story is compelling and fascinating. But IMO they made a huge error in casting Tobey Maguire as Fischer. Bobby Fischer was a brilliant and intimidating monomaniacal killer type. Maguire is way too milquetoast, and short! Although Liev Schreiber was good as Boris Spassky, he would have made a much better choice to play Fischer.

I'm with you. Gross film.

I've wanted to see this for over 30 years but it just slipped through the cracks. There's not many 80's comedies that I haven't seen. What's funny is that it's a teen movie, yet these days it's more likely to be someone my age who enjoys it. That's because of the nostalgia; the music, clothes, hair, etc. Typical story of it's time. A girl and a boy from two different neighborhoods; will she follow peer pressure or her heart. A young Nic Cage plays the boy. It is not a great movie, but it is awesome just the same.

very similar to "Pretty in Pink".
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
As a movie guy 2
Had some good moments, and it looked pretty, but the script was messy with too many subplots, a good 20-40 minutes could've been cut and nothing of value would've been lost and the humor just did not work. Pretty much what I would write about Episode II, to be honest.
As a Star Wars guy: 1
Luke is my favorite character, so this movie can burn in hell. It took everything that was interesting about Episode VII and the original trilogy and took a giant dump on it all.
This is the worst Star Wars movie, worse even the prequels. The prequels at least provided others with enough material to expand and do interesting stuff, this one feels like it detracted from what others had built, it made this era of Star Wars less interesting.
I watch four Star Wars movies every December (Star Wars, Empire, Sith, And Jedi, in that order), but this year I couldn't, I had this thing too fresh in my mind.
Ok, rant over.

A very strange movie indeed. Had read some of the interviews about the allegorical content and once I did it was really quite bludgeoning and unsubtle watching the film with that in mind. That said, excellent performances from all but I won't be watching again (unusual for me and Aranofsky)....6/10.
Although Liev Schreiber was good as Boris Spassky, he would have made a much better choice to play Fischer.
100 per cent agree with this, I still enjoyed the film.

The performances were great, especially Rebecca Hall's. The director can direct actors, but he can't direct the camera. The direction is fairly stale, but he does great in two scenes; The 'Yes but' scene and 'Christine sorting the papers before 'you know what'' scene. The script is pretty great and the actors deliver it well.

I liked it too and gave it the same rating. My Review (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1734633#post1734633)
I think the director chose to do the camera work in the style of the early 1970s, to give the film a 'you are there' look. That's only my guess, I could be wrong.

Hmm, I though that was a real highlight. A very effective moment of heroic prowess that had been lacking, in DC movies at least.
I’d also be willing to say Gadot embodies the character really well.

That might be why I didn' tlike it much. Kept expecting it to become a horror, even a psychological one.
I get that. With a title like It Comes at Night in the horror section of the video store you would think It (whatever that may be) would come at night and do something. I actually was expecting something like a cross between Evil Dead and 28 Days Later which it definitely is not.

I only hope that one day a horror movie does that to the unsuspecting. Think you're hiring a drama? Well!
I like to think of It Comes At Night (2017) as sort of a lost episode of The Walking Dead
Pretty good companion film Into the Forest (2015) which is more of a straight forward story.
