I've posted some positive ratings.

"The French Connection" (1971) and "The Seven-Ups" (1973) are two that come to mind. I'm not sure if I rated it here, but I also recently watched "Three Days of the Condor" (1975) and I liked that too.

I like a lot of musicals and rom-coms, and I haven't watched too many of those recently because I've been focusing on finishing my top 1970s movies list, so I've been watching a lot of movies that are out of my normal genre.

I also love a lot of old movies, like Cary Grant movies, Doris Day movies, Jimmy Stewart movies, etc. When we get to the older movie lists, I'll be more into my genre.

Le Circle Rouge (1970) 3.5

A very well made film, for sure. I can't find any fault in it, and it probably deserves a higher rating. I don't really have much to say about it though. I suppose for me this just came down to a matter of taste. It wasn't quite my niche. I enjoyed it, and I appreciate it's quality. But to be honest it was just a tiny bit boring for me.

Not a fan of the horror genre (I'm easily scared haha) but I thought I would give this a go because the premise interested me. Really well made horror film that wasn't overly scary but had rather thought provoking scenes that made it worthwhile. Definitely recommend this one, it also requires a lot of thought which is always good.

Has anybody seen this? Thoughts?

Weird, unusual, heroin fueled, infused with beat poetry and jazz, great practical effects, some very good casting choices, and probably the perfect director for the adaptation. But I am not big into beat poetry and jazz so that was lost on me. I will not complain about this film being hard to follow since it is an adaptation from heroin influenced literature. But I was able to get a few things given my very limited knowledge of William H Burroughs. It is bizarre and unique to be sure. But unlike Lynch whose unique films are almost always accompanied by fantastic atmosphere, I do not get that from Cronenburg. Worth a shot either way.

Me and my wife have both wanted to see it since watching a trailer for it in the cinema and before that I didnt know anything about it apart from a teaser poster that was released. Loved it, great film, dont think I can give it enough praise. When my wife is off on Saturday hopefully we can watch it together.

Allegro Non Troppo (1976)

In all honesty, I only watched "Allegro Non Troppo" because I wanted to vote for "Saving Private Ryan" in the Movie Tournament, and I didn't think it would be fair to do that without at least watching this movie first, but I found some of the animations in this movie fascinating. I was completely mesmerized by some of the animations, (especially the one about evolution), and the way they fit so perfectly with the music. I haven't decided yet, but it may even get my vote in the Movie Tournament. You can probably add at least half a star for the live action parts if you like foreign films,

This was big hole for me considering Scorsese is one of my favorite directors. I will probably struggle for a couple of days with where this ranks among his other films for me. It was pretty great though. Lagged in the middle a bit but the rest was perfect. I wish I would have watched this before the 80's list. Safe to say this is my favorite DiNero perfromance which I know may not be a super popular opinion.

Beautiful film.

This film was truly great. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy this film but I did. I was truly interested in the story and cared about the main character. Few films can really make me cry, but this one did. It was truly emotionally powerful and poignant. It sounds sort of cheesy, but it's really what the film is about, it's what's on the inside that counts. Inspiring and powerful I highly reccomend this film and am SO glad that I watched it. I have no problems or complaints with this film at all. A great and amazing film.

Planet of the Apes (Remake): I wrote a review of this film to commemorate the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes this Friday. It's on my website, available in my signature. Other-wise, I'll summarize what I thought. A lot was worthwhile when it came to the imagery, it felt like the classic film with an added Tim Burton creepiness. And even then, they weren't all that good.

This is where the positives end. It was a contorted mess that couldn't possibly have been meant to form a coherent narrative. It's a boring film. And I don't like it....

P.S: Helana's Ape looked like Micheal Jackson. (I said it...)

It actually probably won't work. I don't think Alcohol really has that effect. At least for me, alcohol never "enhanced" a movie, but weed sure did. My goodness weed makes movies awesome! Then again, if you smoke too much you won't enjoy any movies unless your high, and then you'll spend all your money on weed and run out of both and be desperate and pawn off your comic book collection just to buy more weed.... I mean.... that never happened to me or anything, but I'm just saying you gotta be careful with drugs. They can ruin your life so fast.

The whole thing is basically a rip off of AvP, The Abyss, Armageddon, Alien and Aliens...

To elaborate...

- Father/Daughter relationship with the Daughter dating one of the "Roughnecks" (Oil Rig workers): William Forsythe's character as both the head of the Company and the Father, is a hardhead: Same as Bruce Willis in Armageddon. He's also not approving of his Daughter's relationship and even refers to the Roughneck she's dating as "Son": Same as Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler in Armageddon.

- There's a scene with one guy going missing, everyone else has to look for him but it's never shown, only the aftermath of what they found is shown: Harry Dean Stanton's death in Alien.

- Scene with a guy crawling around in the air ducts with a flame thrower: Captain Dallas in Alien.

- The drilling company is called "Weyland" but is only ever referred to as The Company by the characters: Alien and Aliens.
The Weyland logo is also taken directly from AvP.

- A character called Virgil: Ed Harris' character had the same name in The Abyss.

- There's a relationship between two Brothers: Similar to many, many relationships in Armageddon, Alien, Aliens and The Abyss.

- Two characters, Male and Female, have exactly the same relationship as Drake and Vasquez in Aliens.

- The creature is almost the same as the Xenomorph, just with a different head.

- One fo the characters also like to spend time alone listening to classical music: Captain Dallas in Alien.

I'm sure there's more.

Edit: There is more... the Father/Daughter relationship stolen from Armageddon also stole the idea of an absent Mother and... the Father catching the Daughter in bed with her boyfriend.

The only difference between this and the films it's ripping off... this one is simply awful.
It's also a massive surprise to see an actor like William Forsythe in such a pile of crap.

An interesting Indy, mixed language film. With Arabic, (English subtitles) and spoken English. It starts off almost documentary style then moves into a little more predictable territory...but never loses it's charm and uniqueness. The lead actress, Nisreen Faour was alone worth watching the film for.

This movie is awesome. I can see why it's a classic. Humphrey Bogart is a total badass and still cooler and awesomer than just about every action hero today. Ingrid Bergman is gorgeous. The story is great and heartbreaking, yet hopeful, in a way. And all those fast moving camera close ups in the movie are great, and way classier than the cheesy dramatic zoom. Great movie, and Bogart's performance stands out and is certainly a landmark in acting and famous badass characters.

Captain America The Winter Solider

I was pleasantly surprised with how good this movie was. I had heard good things but I thought that might have been fanboys. I place the Dark Knight Trilogy as the pinnacle in terms of comic book movies and this was up there. Story was interesting, characters were good and the balance between action and story was well thought of. I only have a few negatives (personal opinions), I thought the identity of "The Winter Solider" was shown to the audience too soon and seemed like there was too many hints during the movie of to who it was. Second was I think the weakest character funny enough was the Cap, he didnt seem to have very good dialogue and seemed like he has adapted to the modern era to easily. Overall this does not take away from the movie as this is a great watch.

American History X (1998)

"American History X" is a good example of what I love about this site. This site encourages me to watch movies that I would never even consider watching if I wasn't here. It's a movie that I only watched because it's one of the movies that was recommended in the movie tournament thread, and I had to watch it if I wanted to vote in that match-up.

Is it my type of movie? No
Is it a movie that I would have watched if I wasn't voting in that thread? No

Is it a movie that I liked? Yes

"American History X" is a powerful movie about the dangers of racism and hate. Edward Norton gives the best performance of his career, and it's a shame that he didn't win the Oscar for his performance in this movie because he definitely deserved it. This is a very violent movie, and in a million years, I never would have thought that I would ever recommend this movie, but I was wrong. It's way too violent for my tastes, but it's the type of violence that's necessary for the movie to be this powerful. I highly recommend this movie. It's an eye-opening, thought-provoking movie that everyone should see. If you like violent movies, or at least don't mind too much violence in movies, then you can probably add at least half a star.

Dolores Claiborne (1995)

"Dolores Claiborne" is an excellent mystery/thriller based on a Stephen King book. Kathy Bates is brilliant as a woman who is accused of murdering the elderly woman that she's been taking care of for many years. I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I'll just say that I recommend this movie to anyone who's in the mood for a good drama/mystery/thriller.

I think "The Birds" is a little bit different than most Hitchcock movies because it's more horror than suspense. Most of Hitchcock's best movies are so good because of the suspense, so if you were expecting another Hitchcock masterpiece, "The Birds." could be a bit of a letdown.

The Man Who Fell From Earth (1976) 3

HK remarked in another thread that even if you don't like a movie from this director, he still keeps it interesting. That was very true for me with this one, because it's not the kind of movie that I'd normally be able to keep so much focus on. It also helped having David Bowie, who is always an interesting character. It's almost 2 and a half hours long, but I was never bored.

An Unmarried Woman (1978) 4

A good surprise, because I didn't realize until after, when I looked it up, that this was a best picture nominee. It's basically a very mature romantic comedy. What I'm looking for in a movie like this is for it to be real, touching, and funny, and it accomplishes all three of those things. I've seen Gideon58 say that Jill Clayburgh was his pick for the best actress Oscar the year it was out. I can't say I completely agree, because Jane Fonda gave maybe my all time favorite female performance that year in Coming Home. Fonda did indeed beat out Clayburgh that year for the Oscar. His thought definitely has merit though; Fonda had a lot of help in Coming Home, starring alongside fellow Oscar nominees Jon Voight and Bruce Dern. In An Unmarried Woman, Clayburgh is a one woman show and carries the film all by herself in spectacular fashion. She embodies the character perfectly; she's sexy without being movie star fake, and tough while being vulnerable. I don't know if I would've liked this movie when I was around 18 or 21, but for an older audience, I would definitely recommend it.

I was familiar with this film because of it's reputation for a convoluted plot. And let's be honest it does. Generally that tends to be a major turn off. For some reason though that is not the case here. Part of that has to do with the main lead. Bogie is Phillip Marlowe and puts on a fantastic performance as the LA shamus. He is smart, hard boiled, super cool, and quick with the wise cracks. My kind of guy. And his chemistry with Lauren Bacall sizzled even during the days of the Hollywood Production Code. All the innuendos and double meanings between those two was a delight to listen too.

Top it off with some fantastic cinematography, a couple of shootouts, and the typical noir feel and I will give this movie a pass on it's plot.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

I decided to watch "The Magnificent Seven" because "Seven Samurai" is listed in the Movie Tournament, and I wanted to watch the English version first. It's one of those movies that I've always wanted to see, but never actually got around to it, so now seemed like the right time.

I'm kind of hit or miss on westerns, but this is one of the best. It has a fantastic cast of top-notch actors, a great story, and lots of action throughout the movie. And it has possibly the best musical score in motion picture history. I highly recommend this movie.

Straight Time (1978)

This is one of those movies that slipped under the cracks.

Dustin Hoffman delivers an amazing performance in this gritty 70's gem as a newly released convict on parole who tries to adjust to a normal life, but circumstances drag him back into a life of crime.

The movie co-stars Gary Busey and Harry Dean Stanton as his friends, also former convicts, and Theresa Russell as his love interest.

The movie also features Kathy Bates in one of her earliest roles as Gary Busey's wife.

I'm glad I discovered this film, and I highly recommend it.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

I first saw "An American Werewolf in London" many years ago, (probably about 25 years ago), so this was a re-watch for me, but I was surprised at how much of this movie I remembered. I'm not a fan of horror movies, but apparently this one left a lasting impression on me, and I mean this in a good way.

As horror movies go, this is definitely one of the better horror movies. It has suspense, action, drama, comedy, and yes, it has gore for those of you who like that. The music is great, and the make-up effects are top-notch. This is one of those rare horror movies that even non-horror fans can enjoy, but if you're a horror fan, you can definitely add at least half a star.

"The Slumber Party Massacre" is a teen slasher film, but with some comedy mixed in. It has just about every cliche in the book, and it's very predictable. It's not my kind of movie, but if you like slasher films, (the kind with stupid teenagers running around, doing everything wrong, and eventually getting killed), then you'll probably enjoy this one because it's more of a spoof of these films than just your average slasher film.

Joe (1970) 4

My feelings about this fluctuated throughout the movie. It's dated and low budget, but that gives it a good, realistic feel. On the other hand, I think it would've benefited from being made a little better. Peter Boyle plays the title character, Joe. To be honest, I didn't think it was the best performance he was capable of. However, his character really stands out, and he commands the screen very well. I did think that at times, he brought some great power. So why did I ultimately rate it so high? Joe is very much my type of film. It's dark and tough, and must've been controversial when it was released. It also has the type of ending that I love, the kind that makes you say damn, I'm going to remember that. I felt that if Boyle's performance was more consistent, and it was made better, it could've been close to a Taxi Driver type of experience. Even so, it's a movie that got me involved, and one I'll remember.

To Have and Have Not (1944)

http://www.doctormacro.com/Images/Posters/T/Poster%20-%20To%20Have%20and%20Have%20Not_02.jpg

This film is famous for being the one where Humphrey Bogart met Lauren Bacall. Their chemistry is what really makes the movie sizzle but it might not be great if the behind-the-scenes love story weren't there, because it shows on the screen. Bogart is the captain of a small fishing vessel in Martinique during WWII, and Walter Brennan is his deckhand who likes his drink quite a bit. But for me, the main attraction is Bacall. She was only 19 when she made this, her first movie and she is smoking hot, and does quite a good job for her first role. The plot is standard, with Bogart helping the French Underground smuggle people around with his boat, all the while dodging the very suspicious local authorities. But it works because of the star power lifting it above the norm and for the great dialogue tossed back-and-forth between the two lovebird stars. Still, when all is said and done, it's a classic.

Joe (1970) rating_4

Why is everyone watching this all of a sudden?

I haven't noticed anyone else watching this but I could've missed it. I only found out about it a few days ago when mark mentioned it in the dismal movie thread. There's a recent movie with the same title starring Nic Cage-maybe that's the one you're thinking of? I saw that last week; that was awesome as well.

Tokyo Story (1953) 4.5

Often times when I watch a movie like this, meaning something I wouldn't choose to watch on my own, but rather a movie I watch for the forum or just because it's supposed to be great, I watch it completely blindly. I knew the basic synopsis for this movie, and I think that helped me a great deal in this case. The first 25 minutes had me doubting if this was going to work out for me. It was then that the premise started to play out, and that carried me through to the devastatingly effective final 45 minutes. For a movie so far out of my comfort zone, and is for me such a dull idea in theory, I feel like I got out of it all that I could. Not quite an all time favorite just because of my personal taste, but I'm comfortable labeling the movie as brilliant.

Tokyo Story is probably the most important/well regarded film that I haven't seen, I keep saying this every time I see someone give it a positive rating (I have yet to see a negative one), but I have no idea why I haven't got round to it yet. I think once I've submitted my 70s list I'll try and complete the S&S list from the site, I've only got a few films left.

I thought Joe was much clearer in its intentions. I've always thought that Taxi Driver was somewhat muddled in its message. It probably took me 25 years and six viewings to accept it as a very good film. I always thought the technical credits and acting were excellent, but the actual story, and especially the ending, rubbed me the wrong way.

But, in truth, I think of Joe more as an Easy Rider told from the perspective of those people who hated the hippies at the time. Its message is similar to that film, but it's almost as if it's told inside out. Both films show how America was basically being ripped apart by the corrupt status quo and the counter-culture, and they both show how America got so politically polarized to this very day. They're just so much more powerful and entertaining than the political campaigns.

Before Sunrise (1995)

"Before Sunrise" is a nice throwback to the old romance movies. No guns, no chase scenes, no special effects. It's basically just two people walking around all night, talking to each other, and falling in love. It's a simple movie, but it's also a wonderful movie. It's the first movie of a trilogy, and I can't wait to see the other two movies.

After Hours (1985)

I'm not really sure what to say about "After Hours". I think it's one of those movies that you don't quite get everything the first time you see it, but when you watch it again, you pick up on things that you missed the first time you watched it. It's an interesting movie with a nice mix of comedy, drama, and some unexpected surprises, but I'm not sure that it's for everyone. On the surface, it's basically about one man having a very bad night, but there seem to be some underlying themes here that need to be explored on repeated viewings. I would definitely recommend giving this movie a chance, but be prepared to go back and watch it a few more times to figure it out.

Donnie Darko (2001)

"Donnie Darko" is one of those movies that while you're watching it, you think you know what's going on, but then when you get to the end of the movie, something unexpected happens, and you kind of just sit there and try to figure out what just happened, and how it fits in with the rest of the movie.

This is one of those movies that I would recommend not reading about before you watch it, because you will want to watch it with an open mind, and try to figure it out yourself, and then read what other people say about it and compare notes. You will probably want to watch the movie a few times to really understand this movie.

"Donnie Darko" is one of the most thought-provoking movies that I've seen, and I recommend it for anyone who likes movies that make you think.

3.5 (but I suspect that this rating will go up with repeated viewings)

Joe (2013)

Nicolas Cage returns to form, and by that I mean film roles that are not merely easy paychecks and do not involve fast cars, monsters, and explosions, in this indie film directed by David Gordon Green, the man behind such comedies as Pineapple Express and the awful Your Highness.

Unlike the 2 films I just mentioned above, Joe is an extremely dark, violent, and occasionally amusing southern tale of a kid named Gary, played by Tye Sheridan, who starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in Mud, who lives with an abusive alcoholic father named Wade, played to perfection by the real-life homeless man turned actor Gary Poulter, who sadly was found dead shortly before the film's release. Gary finds a role model in former convict Joe (Cage's character) who has demons of his own. Joe must now struggle to keep his demons and criminal instincts in check as he faces instigation from local lowlives in order to become the father figure that Gary longs for.

The movie's story is great. The performances are even greater, especially the scene-stealing Gary Poulter, who delivers such raw talent that I have not seen before by an amateur actor. However, I found it hard to follow the movie at times, due to its overly dark theme and slow pace, but that should not dissuade you from watching it.

Avengers (2012) 2

What a steaming pile of manure. I reluctantly watched it with a bunch of friends. I brought a bunch of cool movies, but no they wanted to watch Avengers. It was exactly what I was expecting it to be. I was actually surprised at how typical it was. I don't understand why people praise this movie. It was unrealistic, had mediocre acting and a terrible plot-- I mean honestly the only aspect I remotely enjoyed was the comic relief. First of all I wouldn't have bothered to watch this on my own because I already knew I wouldn't like it, but if I had I would have turned it off in about fifteen minutes. I only sat through it out of respect for my friends, and fortunately I had to go to work right away so I didn't have to talk about it after.

Army of Shadows (1969) 4

I was talking to one of my co-workers about how bad Avengers was and how good Le Circle Rouge was and he told me to check out Army of Shadows. I love realistic intelligent movies. This was so awesome. I'm just going to watch everything Melville has done now. Such a relief coming away from a terrible Hollywood blockbuster and seeing a real work of genius. I can't wait for the 60's MoFo list. I think I'm starting to like the 60's era better than the 70's. Melville is my new favorite director.

Meek's Cutoff (2010, Kelly Reichardt)

http://www.frontrowreviews.co.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/meeks-cutoff.jpg

A very slow moving film and I loved the director's effort with Wendy and Lucy, but this film seemed to have less direction (a pun for anyone who's seen Meek's Cutoff). It's a western about a group of settler's who get lost with a bit of misguidance from their guide/scout. A great cast and premise, apparently based upon a real event, but nothing seems as developed as it could be. Several storylines and events don't really pan out and despite some great scenery the film just plods on and gets repetitive and falls into a pattern(wanderin' and drama during the day, doubtin' at night and discussin' by campire... rinse... repeat scenes). Some great cinematography though.

Grade: C+

Seven Samurai (1954)

I just want to preface this by saying that I know that nobody here is going to agree with this review, but at least I watched the movie all the way through to the end, (all 3-1/2 hours of it). :)

While I'm not a fan of the movie "Seven Samurai", and I prefer "The Magnificent Seven" over "Seven Samurai", I can understand why so many people love his movie. The story seems to flow better in this movie, the characters are fleshed out better in this movie which makes it a more emotional movie, and there seems to be more strategy involved in the fighting scenes in this movie.

I think my issues with this movie are not really about the movie itself, but more about the different cultures between the two movies. I've seen enough westerns over the years that I can relate better to the Americanized version, but I can't really relate to the whole Samurai culture and fighting with Samurai swords. The only sword-fighting that I'm familiar with is the swashbuckling style of Errol Flynn, or the sword-fighting scenes in "The Princess Bride". Also the movie is a bit too long for me, but at least it's not boring.

The first 40 minutes, especially the first 20, are terrific. It would be almost impossible for the rest of the movie to live up to that beginning, and it doesn't. A lot to take in and I'm still processing it. A marvellous and ground-breaking achievement, to be sure, and as warm, honest and authentic a chronicle of childhood and adolescence you're likely to see. It's also subtly insightful, occasionally very funny and looks lovely, with excellent use of music and elegant editing to push us along the timeline. Did it blow me away? No, not really, but it's a film I want to revisit soon and definitely one I can see growing on me significantly.

Ranked in the Top 10 of worst videogame-film adaptions in Time Magazine... nominated for a Razzie... 19% on RT... critics barking about bad lighting...

You know what? I liked it :p

Decent action throughout though it doesn't follow the plot of the game, this is more a retweak... it revolves around genetics rather than an invasion from Hell and becomes more of a Zombie film in regards to the creatures.

Acting is a little touch and go, Rosamund Pike flits between really good and really bad. Dwayne The Rock Johnson is about as good as he gets tbh, which is a good thing.
Rest of the cast are pretty apt.

Karl Urban makes this work though. He's solid throughout.

Didn't see the problem with the lighting as some critics have barked about, it adds a nice atmosphere and there are some pretty good jumps from time to time when close calls between characters and creatures happen.

There's also a number of nods to the game obviously with hypodermic needles that give energy and strength and pills which give the characters a boost.
Talking of nods... the third act has an FPS section with Urban running through the corridors. Didn't work brilliantly but is a nice touch.

I'd give it 84%

Marathon Man (1976)

Marathon Man remains to be an exhilarating and captivating thriller 38 years later.

Dustin Hoffman, whose films I am currently watching as part of a separate marathon, is brilliant as usual as a college student, Babe Levy, who finds himself entangled in a nightmarish debacle involving spies, Nazis, and stolen diamonds. Laurence Olivier steals the show as the sadistic former Nazi dentist Christian Szell who wants those diamonds so badly, he will torture Babe by drilling holes in his healthy teeth just to find them. Roy Scheider is also great as Babe's older brother Doc, a double agent working with the US government and Szell.

This is one of the 70's biggest movies, famous for the infamous line "Is it safe?" and that dental torture scene. But there's more to it that makes it a classic.

Ender's Game (2013)

http://www.scifinow.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Enders-Game-new-poster.jpg

Having read the book about a year ago, I was looking forward to this and I was not disappointed as it followed the book pretty close. All about a young teen recruited to play war games at an academy in space, being pushed to the limits of endurance, hopefully being groomed to lead the battle in space against an invading insect-like race. There are twists to this I can't reveal, but it was ultimately a very satisfying movie that gave the same surprise that the book did. Asa Butterfield is very good as Ender; Hailee Steinfeld is a friend and fellow student who helps Ender in his training; Harrison Ford does his current style of acting by basically being grumpy or intense, but he does reveal a soft center when it's called for; Viola Davis is another officer who is sympathetic towards Ender and wonders if he is being pushed too hard; Ben Kingsley has a small but vital role as a mysterious trainer for Ender; Abigail Breslin has a smallish role as Ender's sister, who is his lifeline back on Earth.

The acing is all uniformly fine, the supporting kids in the academy are very good actors, and the special effects are top notch. Besides being entertaing, this movie asks but does not demand that you think about what happened after you watch it. I'm not the type of viewer that demands to be taught something by the movie I've watched, but if it provides a little extra for the brain along with the entertainment, then that's fine by me.

Me and my father had some time before he had to go pick up mom from work, so we decided to watch a movie from the recordings from the TV. Turns out one was Arsenic and Old Lace by Frank Capra. I knew I could cross off another movie from the Lists section so we watched it. And ya know what... IT IS HILARIOUS! I had no idea the guy who did It's a Wonderful Life could make a movie about two little old ladies who kill people and make it so funny! And Carey Grant who I know from North By Northwest and more serious pictures was hysterical! I love this movie! One of my new favorite comedies. Now if you will excuse me I must go up stairs.

Gunslinger, GB...if you guys liked Arsenic and Old Lace, you might really like.
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer

It won an Oscar in 1948 for Best Writing, Original Screenplay by Sidney Sheldon.

Cary Grant is hilarious as the older man who a teenage Shirley Temple has a crush on.

So do I. Cary Grant is one of a kind to be sure. I haven't seen all of his movies (not yet):) and most can be enjoyed over and over again.

I was reading an interview done with Cindy Williams who said this about him: " I have some wonderful stories. Like meeting Cary Grant—I couldn’t even speak when I met him! I was at a function at the Hollywood Race Track and I heard my name being called—his voice was so familiar, I sort of recognized it instantly—and I turned around and all I could think was, Cary Grant said my name! He was in an all white suit and he was standing there in this beautiful light, it was just magical. And then he looked at me and said, “Well done”—he was a fan of “Laverne & Shirley”!"

So Cary was a L&S fan, too cool!

I liked all those Cary Grant films that you guys mentioned. I'm not the biggest fan of Charade and I do like Audrey Hepburn in almost everything I've seen her in too.

What makes Cary Grant so cool, is his self-deprecating style of humor, he can pull it off with his suave demeanor. I've used that self-deprecating humor in real life and it goes over pretty well too, though it would work better if I was move suave and less a slob.:(

Only Angels Have Wings, indeed one of my favorites too and a totally different on screen persona for Grant. He is much more surly....and hey! it introduces Mrs. Orson Welles!I've seen People Will Talk, a very remarkably candid film about a young women's pregnancy and dealing with suicide. I was surprised it was even allowed to be made back in 1951. A good film that gets the viewer emotionally involved.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)

http://www.doctormacro.com/Images/Posters/H/Poster%20-%20Hunchback%20of%20Notre%20Dame,%20The%20(1939)_12.jpg

Until this film, I had only seen the silent Lon Chaney version, which I thought was great. But now, I have to give the edge to this version. There's a great cast, which features Charles Laughton, Maureen O'Hara, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Edmund O'Brien, Thomas Mitchell, and George Zucco, all greats of their time. Laughton plays Quasimodo, the hunchback of the title, Hardwicke is his adopted caretaker, who has turned devious since clapping eyes on the gypsy girl Esmeralda, played by O'Hara. She is luminous here, simply stunning, and makes almost every man who sees her love her instantly, not the least of which is Quasimodo. I was stunned to see the youthful O'Brien as the young street performer who falls for O'Hara. I've only seen him in movies where he was at least middle-aged and it took me a bit to realize it was him I was seeing despite knowing he was in the cast. Thomas Mitchell, I'm sure most of you will remember as Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life. He's the leader of the literal underground people, who live in hideouts beneath Paris and defy the law who treat them as scum. Zucco is fine in a small part as his usual sinister type, playing a lawyer who partakes in a trial against the innocent Esmeralda.

But the real goods belong to Laughton. I've seen him usually playing a stoic, stand-up type of role, but here, he really lets himself go, giving in to all emotions as he is humiliated, whipped, laughed at, ignored, etc. all for his deformed looks, and his deafness, caused by being the bell-ringer of Notre Dame. Lest anyone think different, this is not a horror film. This is tale of the haves against the have-nots, the innocent triumphing over the evil, with Laughton leading the way. He is a wonder in his make-up, his usual personality barely recognizable, feeling a love that is not to be for Esmeralda, joyously ringing all the bells in the cathedral by hand or foot, pouring lead on bad guys and good guys alike at the steps of the church. Just a great, great film. I must have this one on DVD.

They're all easily distinguishable as his, as the style is consistent with all of them (not seen Bottle Rocket, that might be a little different, I dunno). I'd rank the five I've seen:

I love the flick to death. They play with the typical Disney cliches from Prince Charming, instant true love, and the like.

As for everyone singing the songs... Yeah I can see how that can get on peoples nerves. When Pearl Jam starts braking into Let it Go at their show you know a monster has been created. :D I happen to be that guy too. lol.

Frozen isn't near one of my Disney favorites.... the Disney Renaissance films are the best.. the one's from the 1990's.... early 1990's... I heard Disney tried to "recapture" the renaissance style with "Frozen" but I wasn't impressed...
