Das Experiment rating_4
With a story that's inspired by true events (the important elements of it remaining unchanged), it makes for a far more chilling story.

The Experiment is based on Mario Giordano's novel, Black Box, which was further based on Philip Zimbardo's Stanford prison experiment of 1971.
.

ive read about this experiment before.crazy stuff, but not unexpected-we "see" this stuff every day in the real world-its a superiority complex thing, how the guards start to feel like the prisoners are worthless or below them could be transferred onto how women are treated in several countries,or gays,or how people at war treat innocents or prisoners etc etc.
interesting stuff but really unerving aswell.

one of my favourite movies,i wouldnt have thought you would like it,but im glad you did!

I really dug it. The imagery in this film is very impressive and still holds up. However, I agree that some casting changes would've made it that much better. For example, Lopez. I also had issues with the ending. When you consider the rest of the film, the ending felt somewhat uninspired.

yeah the imagery is what i love about it!like really really love it. I didnt really mind J.Lo all that much,i think she can be decent at times (u turn is my favourite of hers) but i really didnt/dont like Vince Vaughn
which part of the ending didnt you like?
the in dream part or them finding the girl "i real time"?

Evil Dead II (1987) - 3.5

Still a very good film, it's been like 2 years and I love it. Some of the side characters and that stuff is a little... ehh.

The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) - 2 ++

Really bad movie, but it has a lot of great stuff in it. I would check it out just on the fact that your bound to get a laugh, also really early John Landis.

Freaks (1932) - 4 +

Such great themes and characters in this film, it's almost unbelievable how ahead of it's time it is.

I didn't like how rushed it felt. Here's this great buildup we're getting and suddenly he's dead and all is well again. It wasn't just that, but the general way it played out was very hokey.

Nice little ditty. The twist ending should have been seen a mile away, but I didn't catch it until right before it happened. One of the better movies I've seen in a down year so far.

Inferno

This movie is like the other 2 already created (The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons) which is not a bad thing but nothing new here. I know they had the books as source material but I read they changed a few things from the book. The acting was solid and Tom Hanks is always so watchable, Felicity Jones was also very good. The whole movie I was trying to think where I have seen her before and then walking out of the cinema I saw i poster for Rogue One and it all clicked. The rest of the cast was solid however parts of the story at the beginning was hard to watch for me as it jumped from Hanks' visions and who was working for who. Anyways it was a solid film and I would rewatch.

Nerve

I enjoyed the concept of this movie but I like The Purge original movie it was used correctly. The story is a bit slow moving at first but picked up about half way through. I find it is strange that this game "Nerve" is supposed to be a secret and should not be told to authorities however every man and his dog is watching. Also I was unsure who pays for the players to do the dares and who makes the dares. Both actors are ok but nothing memorable, it seems like Dave Franco is in more movies that his brother these days. There was just too much that was not explained it fell flat in the end. It is probably worth a watch once and forget about it after.

Refn crafts a terrifying myth, drawing sustenance from such sources as the Greek Harpies and Countess Elizabeth Báthory. Dead simple. Universal. Masterwork.

http://boxd.it/bH79f

I agree. This movie will stand the test of time. In 20 years people will still rave on about it as Refn's masterpiece. It's brilliant.

A friend recently said to me ........"Do you think that maybe when she got the knife stuck in her throat by Keanu Reeves, she was actually murdered by him? And the next scene is her detached from reality listening to her own murder in the next room, with the rest of the movie being a metaphor for her either being in purgatory or being an entire dream sequence of the events that led up to her death?"

I was blown away by this off the cuff theory. It may not be correct. But the fact that it could be is what makes this movie so good.

Joy (2015)

This movie received a lot of varying reviews, both here and all around media in general. I loved it myself. I have yet to see all of Jennifer Lawrence's films but I thought she did a great job here, going through the ups and downs of her real-life character's attempt to get her invention marketed. The supporting cast is good, with Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini, Elisabeth Röhm, and Bradley Cooper all doing fine jobs. But the only one that really stands out for me is Diane Ladd as Lawrence's grandmother, who is her main champion, believing in her talents from an early age. But make no mistake, it's Lawrence's movie all the way. My favorite scene involves her confronting a crooked businessman in a hotel room. I could watch this one again soon very easily.

Ghosts on the Loose (1943)

I'm a fan of The Bowery Boys, also known in their long career as The Dead End Kids, and the East Side Kids. I've been watching many of their movies lately, including two they made with Bela Lugosi. This is the best of the two. The two main stars were always Leo Gorcey as their leader who used wrong words continually while the others thought him smart, and Huntz Hall as the goofball who was always accidentally making genius inventions or gaining some special power. This movie has them, along with about half-a-dozen other East Side Kids, attending the wedding of Glimpy's (Hall) sister, played by a very young and beautiful Ava Gardner. The first half has them taking part in the preparation for the wedding, with the second half dealing with them going out to the country to clean up Ava and husband's honeymoon house. They mistakenly go the "haunted house" next door and bump into nasty Nazi's, led by Lugosi. Lots of laughs in this, one of their best flicks. They cranked out a ton of these things and they're hit-and-miss but always distracting at least, providing a few chuckles here and there. As most of them are barely over an hour, it's not really time wasted.

A crime film set in the 80's and based on a true story suits my taste perfectly. It's well made and the performances are solid, especially from Bryan Cranston. I was entertained, but there was nothing great about it, and I'll just remember it as a good movie.

Glad you liked it, Cricket.

Tarsem Singh is a little spotty on the overall quality of his films but they all look incredible and that's what I love most about The Cell. If you have any interest in checking out more from Singh, give The Fall a try. I can't recommend his other work though, aside from R.E.M.'s music video for "Losing My Religion."

I don't see how you can stand Tarsens work.

Many are familiar with Jesse Owens, the track and field athlete who won 4 gold medals at the 1936 summer olympics in Germany and was credited with "single-handedly crushing Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy",this is his story. Very much liked the young actor playing Jesse Owens, felt like a very natural and watchable actor, Jeremy Irons great as ever as the olympic committee representitive sent to Germany to deal with the Nazis, also a sinister turn from the actor who plays Dr Goebbels... although this at times made it feel like two separate movies that have never met before, your American sports movie meets Das Bunker.. and I didn't want the das bunker parts to end! still I quite enjoyed it

Riphagen (Netherlands) 4 Another war time movie based on true events; this time regarding a thief who works both sides of the war. Collecting money/jewelry from running Jews and then reporting them to his Nazi superiors to be sent to camps along with betraying freedom fighters. The lead does an excellent job. A seriously good movie.

(REWATCH) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1974) 3++ Written/Directed by Gene Wilder with Marty Feldman, Dom DeLuise and the delightful Madeline Kahn. Vaudevillian silliness that Wilder excels at. Not hilarious, but it still made me chuckle at several parts.

Jungle Book 4 I would easily have gone higher but I had a serious problem when Christopher Walken voicing King Louie broke into "I wanna be like you." The ooo-ooo-ooo's were very cringe-worthy.
The remaining cast was rather spot on. Idris as Shere Kahn was brilliant, Bill Murray as Baloo was a great call; and all the others were superb and the CGI was pretty impressive when it came to animal movement. A rather solid remake into live action.

My fourth Godard. Vivre Sa Vie was the only one of the three i loved, i was interested in checking this out when it was suggested for the sci-fi countdown.

Good film, solid performances from Anna Karina as always and Eddie Constantine who i'm not familiar with. It looked great at times but not always, same with how it sounded. Interesting story as well. My only complaint and this goes for all of the Godards i've seen is that he does some really weird things that seem completely pointless to me and don't add much to the film, there's every possibility that i'm missing what he's attempting, still though. It's just certain seemingly experimental camera angles and sound choices at random times, sometimes they work and you get a really great shot or some extra layer of tension to a scene. Other times it just makes things awkward like a scene when Karina and Constantine are walking down a hall and suddenly he cuts the sound off for 30 seconds, in worse cases it can be very intrusive like his chopping weird edits that make his films seem glitchy; that was a problem for me in this in particular. Thing is this kind of unconventional filmmaking is of interest to me it is partially what makes him unique, i think i just need to get a bit more used to his style for these films to flow more naturally for me and hopefully discover a few favourites because i do think he has some interesting ideas. Vivre Sa Vie is the exception to this for the record that is a favourite of mine.

Anyway even though this has just been me complaining i did really like this for the most part, it had interesing characters and for every filming or sound choice that annoyed me there were 2 or 3 that i thought were great. The story and concepts were interesting even though surprisingly simple and familiar once i got into it. Something i'd recommend as long as you aren't looking for loads of action and it is something that will be in consideration for my list.

THE WICKER MAN (2006)
NETFLIX

A police officer (Nicholas Cage) gets a letter from his run-away fiancee who he hasnt seen for years. In the letter she is asking him to come to a little isle called Summersisle to help look for her missing daughter.
Getting there he is met by hostility by the weird,all-female inhabitants of the isle while he tries to solve the case.

Spoiler

This could actually have been one of my favourite movies,
i loved the weirdness, the masks, the twins, the cult-ish way of life, the settings-but theres a few things that kept that from happening.
I wish the movie would have been darker-it could have been a great thriller, but they kept it too light and didnt really go all the way with the weirdness-it could have been scary.
The main character-hes supposed to be a police officer...he couldnt have been very good at his job. if you get to a weird island looking for a missing child, talk to the mother and she tells you not to trust anyone, not believe anything that anyone says and runs off saying she`ll come back when its safe surely you would ask why its not safe and who from-who she thinks plays a part and why she thinks people are lying. or hey, how about asking about the child, how did she go missing, who was her friends, teachers etc etc. Now i understand this is just a movie but these a too obvious fumbles. He continuesly makes horrendous decisions like going into an obvious trap like the water cave, come on....He doesnt add up the young girls age with when her mother left him to figure out she was his daughter, and didnt question the fact that she looked nothing like neither of claimed parents. Also the mother was extremely annoying and didnt seem very bright. Also when he speaks with the woman in charge and he asks what they do if whoever gets pregnant has a boy,she answeres "that depends"..but sure, why ask anymore about it.
Nicholas Cage-wrong person for the job.firstly the fact that his hair was dyed about 5 colours too dark, too much too dark make up and too white teeth was hard to get over at first.Secondly he made the character too erratic not very serious-also i kept hearing Ross from friends several times in the back of my head as he delievered a few lines exactly the same as he would. He just didnt bring anything to this role, and some scenes were flat out bad from his side.
the last scene made me think of hostel.

The Collector (1965)

Another great from William Wyler, with the excellent Terence Stamp playing the deeply troubled and unsettling Frederick Clegg, a man with an unhealthy obsession with a beautiful young art student named Miranda. There is a great sense of tension and menace the whole way through this film and culminates in a fantastic ending.

Dark City - 4-

http://i66.tinypic.com/717c3s.jpg

I had no idea what to expect from this going in, actually i don't think i have ever heard of this film outside this site. It's odd, as far as i'm aware noone i know has seen it and i also don't think i've ever heard it mentioned elsewhere online. Very good film. I got sucked up in the mystery pretty early on most likely due to the cast of weird characters and the effective suspense. Dr Schreber was a very good character, weirdly i wouldn't even say Sutherland gave a particularly good performance: he came across cartoony and i'm not convinced that it was intentional, regardless it fit the film. The film looked fantastic. You can tell it's from the director of The Crow from the visuals alone, it looked like an updated version of The Crow with more elaborate sets; these type of visuals really appeal to me. John was great, very intriguing reminded me of Neo from The Matrix except ya know interesting and played by a competent actor. Great ending especially the injection scene with John going through his memories was excellent, the fighting with their minds things looked a bit dumb at first but when the scenery started getting ripped up it started looking great.

Good film will consider it for my list.

I loved the old man, and the relationship between the two. I lost interest when he met the girl - there wasn't anything there, no feeling, no real dialogue. It would have been nice if the owner of the theater had a line or two more, but most of his talk was small-talk.

EDIT: I saw the 124 min. version on Netflix, not the 155 min version. Anyone watch both?

The movie opens with a woman, played by Bette Davis, chasing a man out of a house and brutally shooting him to death. They are both married, but to other people, so what follows is the why and the repercussions. This movie is a bit lurid for it's time and is quite entertaining. The acting is strong and it is filmed beautifully. A nice hidden gem from director William Wyler.

The Girl on the Train

(Tate Taylor)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/34/The_Girl_on_The_Train.jpg

2

The Girl on the Train is one of the biggest selling debut novels ever, a book that was fast published to nip at the heels of the success of Flynn's Gone Girl. It makes sense that Hollywood would want to capitalize on this as well. The novel of The Girl on the Train will always be in Gone Girl's shadow, whether it's warranted or not and Tate Taylor's film suffers the same fate. Fincher had great success with Gone Girl, Taylor doesn't do the book justice and the book isn't even that great.

Rachel takes a train to and from New York everyday. While on her commute she always notices one couple from one house, this is Scott and Megan. She's never met them, but she likes to make up imaginary lives for them, thinking they are the perfect couple. One day, she sees Megan with another man and it turns her whole world upside down. Yet, can her judgement be trusted? She suffers from an addiction to alcohol, something she was driven to after her failed marriage with her husband Tom. Tom just so happens to live two houses down from Scott and Megan with his new wife and child, living in the same house Rachel use to live in. Things go from bad to worse when Megan goes missing and Rachel purposely inserts herself into the investigation to find out the truth.

There seems to be a lot going on by this description, but truth be told, the film fails to have any of it be interesting. You'd think that a mystery of a girl gone missing and having an unreliable narrator make for some suspense, but Taylor never creates any. The film feels hollow at its core and unfortunately it never manages to be what it tries so hard to be, which is a successful thriller. I ask myself, at what point was this film suspenseful? All of it is held until the last ten minutes, the reveal if you will, even then it's a fizzle. The biggest problem with the film is how boring it is. I'm watching this film from a viewpoint of a reader from the book. Yet I can't help but feel that if I hadn't read the book, that the reveal at the end would still be a predictable slug. The viewer gets to the ending well before the film does and you are sitting there just waiting for this film to catch up.

There are numerous "suspects" in the film and it wants you to believe in every single one of them, but anyone who watches a film knows that none of these people will turn out to be responsible. The book is told from 3 perspectives, Rachel, Megan and Anna, who is Tom's new wife. The film tries to juggle these perspectives throughout the almost 2 hour running time and not surprisingly is fumbles. Rachel, played by Emily Blunt is clearly the main focus. Megan, played by Haley Bennett, my favourite performance, has her story mostly told through flashbacks. Finally there is Anna, played by Rebecca Ferguson, whom I didn't even recognize until I started writing this review, is given the least amount of things to do.

On the other side of things we have Justin Theroux, Luke Evans and Edgar Ramirez as the three supporting male characters. Theroux is the perfect husband on the outside, but could possibly be hiding something sinister underneath. Evans is the husband of the missing woman, a man with anger issues and abuse claims. The look of him is intimidating enough for some and finally Ramirez as Megan's therapist with questionable morals. Each performance, while fine, serves the role written on the paper and none stand out beyond the page. The one performance in the whole film that goes above and beyond may be Blunt's, to the point of annoyance. Rachel is a drunk and Blunt goes for broke with her "drunk" performance. I really hated the character of Rachel in the books and Blunt does nothing to really win me over with the performance in the film either.

The film doesn't faulted because of the performances, those are fine for the most part. It suffers from the direction. Taylor does absolutely nothing to make the film memorable, to make it look enticing, to make it worth watching. The film bored me and I don't really get bored during films. Taylor does nothing to make me care for the mystery at the core of this story. I really wanted this film to be good, to be suspenseful and work as an adult thriller. It fails to do those things and it's one of the bigger disappointments of the year.

Alexander (2004)

Viewed for class. Film seeks to tell more a historical narrative than a theatrical one, which hurt its playback against the likes of Troy and 300, which both display a culture different to what we're accustomed to... Now we worship, girls... Love the woman. I see a point here, though. The Greeks knew, a strong culture, knows the man's prowess is to be aspired to. A nation shouldn't lose sight of the strength of man. The Greeks revered that, and were strong. The film drags on too long, the casting whiffs at crucial moments... Not sold Stone nailed Alexander, he made something worth considering, although it's not as great to watch bc it tried to be more historical rather than full sprint theater

Damn, another western for the top 10. I was very surprised by how much I liked this, and by how much fun it ended up being, but I suppose that's my fault placing doubt in the Coen Brothers, who I'm pretty sure cannot disappoint. I expected a well shot drama, which I got, but I got much more as well, with some surprisingly good action, characters and genuine comedic moments, and well, other moments, like a man screaming like a donkey, but that's easily forgiven. Hailee Steinfeld is impressive, while Jeff Bridges gives Tom Hardy a run for his money being the mumbling badass that he is(Can't wait to rewatch this with subtitles), and Matt Damon is ever so charming as the movie progresses, even keeping his pearly whites while everyone else has rotting maggots for teeth. I was surprised by Josh Brolin, who's character ended up being kinda campy and fun even somewhat likable, instead of your typical western Angel Eyesesque pure sinister baddy badman.

If I had to have a gripe I'd say allot of moments in this movie fall onto pure coincidence or luck which is a little unfortunate but it doesn't disengage me from the narrative.

But damn those Coen Brothers and their bittersweet endings, I just can't catch a break.

Solid film. Some great performances particularly Karloff as The Monster which is now iconic, some excellent scenes, and i liked how it enhanced some Young Frankenstein jokes. I also thought it looked fantastic which i wasn't really expecting. The only thing holding my rating back is the fact that i've heard the Frankenstein story a million times before, not a fault of the film obviously. It has got me pumped for Bride of Frankenstein though which i'm not familiar with. It is only 70 minutes long so i would say it's something everyone should check out.

I Love You, Man (2009)

A pretty okay comedy/romance with bits of drama thrown in. Stars Paul Rudd as a newly engaged man (to Rashida Jones, hubba, hubba!) who really has no male friends he can hang out with. Jones encourages him, and he goes out on several disastrous "man dates" to try to find a friend. He ends up being buddies with Jason Segel, who is the best friend a guy could have...at first. As a comparison, like most Ben Stiller flicks, Rudd goes through a lot of pain-and-destruction and embarrassment until he has it out with Segel. All ends well, though, and even the jerk played by Jon Favreau has a happy fairy tale ending. My favorite part is Rudd and Segel playing garage band Rush and they're not too bad (if that's them really playing). Good supporting cast including J.K. Simmons, Jaime Pressly, Jane Curtin, Andy Samburg, Thomas Lennon (in a pretty funny small role) and the above-mentioned Favreau. A pleasing enough time-waster. And did I mention Rashida Jones is in it? :randy:

Well, I've just watched 2013 flick Delivery Man starring Vince Vaughn. I have somewhat mixed feelings for Vaughn - I used to hate him and his acting quite a lot, but then I saw the Swingers and figured out who he was and what's his thing, so I'm OK with him now. As for this movie, I am not quite sure. Vaughn delivers it in his own way, but the movie has a lot more potential than it shows. There are some cool moments, some absolutely horrifyingly bad, but what annoyed me most about it was the fact that it was a scene-for-scene adaptation of a French movie. That was really sad.

Anyways, a missed opportunity.

I went into this apprehensively, the novel was okay but really nothing special (but what the hell, it's Stephen King, let's make a movie about it), I was still kinda excited but apparently whoever made this thought **** the novel because everything is changed, after a shaky (made for TV feel) opening, it goes to people mumbling in dark rooms, I should've known it would be crap after the last time Jackson and Cusack teamed for a King adaption (1408 is the one King story that I found genuinely creepy) and they ****ed it up, no rating as I turned it off after 30 minutes, went to IMDb and realized that many others had too. Maybe I'll try to finish it one day (but I doubt it)

The St. Louis Kid - 6/10

I watched this because it's only 67 minutes, has James Cagney in it, and to eat away a tiny bit of space on the DVR. Notice the movies right after 1932 always have some left-wing populism (FDR)... Even a judge lets a guy go because he hit a guy who headed a milk company - Cagney talks about hard-working people, low wages, etc... Also in the 30s you'll notice is the contempt for authority.

To compare to modern politics, another 30s movie "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" - the public is amazed because just ONE man in Congress was corrupt. Now it's expected.

French chemist unlocks the mysteries of microscopic bacteria as he cures anthrax & rabies during the 19th century.

I really enjoyed this little bio-pic. Maybe I just found the subject matter more interesting and others might not find a movie about historical science as engaging. But I thought it was a well made & well acted film. There are some movies from this era that I can't get into, but this held my interest from start to finish. It's a fairly simple period piece running at just under an hour and a half.
This isn't a visually stunning or epic movie (although the discoveries it deals with were epic in the course of medical history) but I learned some things from it, trusting that it was factual. It's a drama, but contains some moments of very subtle humor - like Pasteur trying to teach a medical doctor how to "scrub up" - a standard action of medical hygiene we take for granted these days.

Apparently Preminger had a really difficult time working with the studio to get it done, but he was contractually obliged. He absolutely hated working with Marilyn Monroe, and Mitchum struggled with alcoholism at the time. The studio wanted a classic revenge tale in usual Western style, whilst Preminger's vision and shooting style was different. Apparently he didn't care too much how it turned out and let the studio edit it how they wished. Strange because I love Westerns, Otto Preminger, Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe, so it could have been fantastic, I guess it's just one of those things.

Well, first is definitely the best.

Perhaps, though the third does give it a relatively good run for its money. At least it's got a handful of good character actors chewing the scenery and at least tries to tone down the sheer awfulness of the second (even if it doesn't remove it entirely).

The Lady from Shanghai (1947)

I watched some of this movie one night, got tired, and shut it off. When I woke up, I thought I watched a good amount of it, but noticed I only watched a half hour so I restarted it. It moves very quickly, sometimes feeling like it's in fast forward. A lot happens for a movie that's just shy of 90 minutes long, and that certainly keeps it entertaining. There's a lot of misdirection that happens with the story. What I really loved about it was the characters/performances. The four leads all bring something different, and I'd have to say that George played by Glenn Anders was my favorite. It's filmed beautifully and I loved the dialogue as well.

Okay. Since my man, Adam Wingard, screwed up his otherwise promising career, it looks like I better turn to a new up-and-comer...

Ever since I saw Oculus directed by Mike Flanagan, I've been excited for this man's career and what he does next. Hush is not nearly as original or well-crafted, but it's a lot fun, it's intense and it's exciting. It has enough of a twist on the home invasion genre to make it all a little different and it has enough talent behind and in front of the camera to keep me interested throughout. Not free from clichés and not without flaws, but very well made in its genre.

The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936)

http://www.iulianfira.ro/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/pasteur1.jpg

It's a drama, but contains some moments of very subtle humor - like Pasteur trying to teach a medical doctor how to "scrub up" - a standard action of medical hygiene we take for granted these days.

rating_4

P.S. Appearance in the film by Dickie Moore - one of the Little Rascals! Count me as one of the people who really liked this film and for the same reasons you did, the subject matter is interesting. Good to see this unknown film get some recognition here.

In Ireland, James Mason plays the leader of this little IRA type of group. They commit a robbery, Mason kills a guy, and is himself shot in the arm. He gets separated from the rest and hides out while bleeding to death. I like Mason as an actor, but he spends most of this hunched over waiting to die. All of the supporting characters are ok, but none stand out. It's a well crafted movie that's beautifully shot, yet I found it bland at times except for a few good scenes.

Sam Rockwell would probably get a lot of votes for most underrated actor, including from me. He's a one man show in this movie, and although he is very good, I didn't quite feel the personality he has brought to other roles. Of course, this is a pretty dark movie. It is fairly compelling, but I didn't love anything about it besides how it looked. I also thought Kevin Spacey did a very nice job providing only his voice.

Ghostbusters (2016)
Never compare me to the mayor in Jaws! Never!
1.5

Never again. I'm gonna go to the grave having to tell people that I saw the 2016 Ghostbusters before I saw the original. This is like a bad SNL skit gone way too far with the worst characters I've seen in a loooong while, who literally make Patrick Swayzee ghost jokes after causing someone to be inadvertently murdered. The comedy in this is literally just fart jokes, Melissa McCarthy giving Adam Sandlerish sarcastic commentary on their surroundings, Chris Hemsworth being stupid and Kate McKinnon being suuuuper quirky and weirrrrd while Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones are just bad stereotypes. The best part of this movie though, is that the villain is just some guy who didn't like high school, hahaha.

Gave it 1.5 though because Slimer, and the action in this is somewhat better from what I've seen of the OG, because they get more gadgets and get to move around more than the guys just standing still.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Ed, this is as close to hell as I ever want to get.
4.5

I loved this movie, it did everything a horror movie sequel should do, and hasn't done in years. It's incredibly well shot, the stakes are higher, we cared more for Ed and Lorraine, and the scares were just on par as with the first film. The Nun is genuinely the most terrifying force I've seen on screen in a while, and might give me nightmares, and I love it. The movie often flips common tropes and cliches on their heads at times and instead of going the obvious route they will semi satisfy your expectations/desires before ripping it away in another way. The performances were good, the standouts being Patrick Wilson and the main haunting victim girl. While Vera Farmiga is an important figure she feels somewhat sidelined during the actual haunting and only returns to form in the climax.

There are also some other points in the plot that aren't coherent and can briefly take some out of the narrative, but overall, I'd say whether you watched The Conjuring or not, this one is just as good if not slightly better and definitely worth your time.

I guess Hardcore Henry wasn't so groundbreaking after all. Except for a few brief moments when the star (Robert Montgomery) addresses the audience directly, this movie is filmed entirely from his point of view. Despite a lukewarm 6.6 rating on IMDb, this movie is on the top 100 noirs list. Thinking it was gimmicky, I thought I was going to hate it after a few minutes, but it ended up being pretty effective thanks to the star's wisecracking ways, and seeing a good supporting cast's reaction to him. It is a Philip Marlowe film, with a plot that's standard for the genre, yet effective.

I love the nasty look Audrey Totter gives Robert Montgomery at the start of the film when he's seated at her desk and an attractive secretary enters the room. I love the way the camera swings to look at the secretary (from his 1st person view point), then swings back to Audrey's face! Boy is she pissed!

Gods of Egypt (2016)

Watched this on a lark since it popped up on HBO.
I pretty much watch most movies based on mythology (heck, I've sat through the Lou Ferrigno Hercules movies and Schwarzenegger's Hercules in New York!)

This wasn't that bad. Of course I went in with lowered expectations (considering the reviews and the fact that it just came out and was on cable already)... and I think low expectations always helps one enjoy a movie more.

It's a simple movie, following the typical themes of mythological pantheons. It reminded me of Clash of the Titans (I would say the remake, but even though I saw that one I can't remember any of it compared to the classic original 1981 version). It might also be comparable to Marvel's Thor movies. In fact, my first exposure to the Egyptian pantheon was via Marvel's Thor comics.
If you go into this movie as if it's a Saturday morning cartoon and are looking for some mindless entertainment, you might be presently surprised.

And yes, I think a more "exotic" looking cast might have helped the movie feel more authentic - in that sense it reminded me of older movies where all the actors were white but playing different races - a time where a Swiss-German Russian with a shaved head and some eye make up made the best Egyptian Pharaoh! Nostalgic in that sense... but not in a good way since the "white-washing" of older movies reflected the social climate & discrimination of the times.

It's not Halloween, but it's still a strong follow up with good imagery.

Slither (2006) - 2.5 ++

So close to a good film, but I just can't get it there. It follows so many tropes and just overall has annoying characters and horrible acting.

The Changeling (1973) - 3 ++

This might go higher on re-watch, really well shot and has a beautiful score as well. Scott is also fantastic in this.

Psycho (1960) - 5

Nothing short of incredible, such a great concept that works without the twist, but is so excelled by it. Perkins and Leigh did an amazing job, but above all so did Hitch.

Wow, this movie REALLY had a lot going against it and, sadly, it does come through.
Pity, since this had SO MUCH potential. . . Thanks for the details about the problems occurring during the filming.

Down By Law - 7.5/10

Kind of a weak start, but turned out real good. I don't think Tom Waits can act. Lurie starts awful in that role, but his acting in the second half is good and Roberto Benigni is very good.

1986 was a terrific year for horror and science fiction. Not only did we have the second installment in the Alien franchise and one of my favorites in David Cronenberg's The Fly, but we had Chopping Mall! Now, in seriousness, this film which features an early performance from Barbara Crampton (who appeared in seriously good horror gem Re-Animator the year before) isn't the highest caliber of material. It's a cheesy, light-heart b-movie about a group of teenage employees who are having a party inside a shopping mall after dark, all's well and good until the newly automated security robots turn rogue and start butchering everything in-sight.
The film starts with all the familiar tropes of the low-budget underbelly, complete with campy characters and a gratuitous amount of topless females. From there though, it really brings in the cornball charm the eighties could always encompass so well. You've got the cast scrambling all around, running away from these security robots that look less intimidating than the vacuum cleaner from the Teletubbies. The violence is over-the-top and the special-effects are ridiculous as well, featuring robots shooting laser beams and exploding body parts.
For all its faults, Chopping Mall is exactly what it's meant as, a light-heart, gleeful affair that is short and silly.

3.5+

http://images3.static-bluray.com/reviews/8483_4.jpg

I was always interested in this movie, and I finally watched it for the upcoming Sci-Fi countdown. Don Johnson plays a young man fighting for survival in a post apocalyptic wasteland with his telepathic dog named Blood. It's a mutually beneficial relationship as Blood relies on the young man to find food, and in return Blood sniffs out women for the guy to rape. This movie is perverse, odd, darkly funny, and unique. I would say it's more guilty pleasure than high quality, and it's a movie that I'm going to remember.

:love::love::love:;D:devil:
This film is hardly of the 8/10 variety, hombre. An early work from young and aspiring director, Mr. D, Sasha Grey's Anatomy boasts a wholesome cast of known names and has all the workings of a terrific film.
The lighting is effective, albeit, a little overzealous with itself, which is all a part of Mr. D's charm and style. Cinematography has always been where D shines, and in this film, he pays homages to many of the greats, including the likes of Scorsese and Hitchcock, it's subtle, another strong suit for the director, but it's there.
Alas, he definitely wasn't as comfortable behind the camera as he was in later years. The narrative itself is superfluous and shallow, I never really have a feel for the characters, which makes the near 2-hour run-time all the more unbearable.
All in all, it's a waste of the talent involved. I'd recommend Barely Legal Baby Fat 2, another, more ambitious of Mr. D's works. He takes a lot of risks, really paving his ways as one of the great directors of our time.

A Page of Madness (1926)

In order to be closer to his wife, who is in an asylum, a man take a job as a janitor in the building, secretly gaining access at night.

This film was lost for 45 years and although is available on YouTube now, its apparently still missing quite a chunk of what was originally included, which is a real shame as it is quite hard to follow. There are no subtitles or narrative (the copy I watched was completely silent) and it is filmed in the style of flashbacks but in some ways that almost adds to the whole mysteriousness of it all. Some of the scenes inside the asylum are genuinely disturbing and terrifically well made. For 90 years old this film is well ahead of its time was surely an influence of many films of this nature.

To perfect the experience I recommend watching alone in complete darkness. Enjoy.

Better than I expected. Full of interesting surprises and interesting characters. At times, you can sense the evolution of a degenerate species, as certain members try to move past hatred and embrace a bit of love. There is plenty of butt kicking to go around, mixed in with some sex, crime, seizures and a bus full of tourists. The film made me smirk a few times.

The uninitiated and curious can do a quick internet search. I think violence in movies is often a lot of fun. The movie is from 1992. How long should I wait for the uninitiated to become initiated? I thought I was the uninitiated with this title and I was giving my opinion to those that saw it. That would be why we get reps in this thread, because people have seen the film you haven't. I'm pretty sure I've avoided the "review" threads with my post. I just add a few words to my ratings, that's it. There is no intention on my part to give away the storyline, review it or put forth an idea about the film, aside from my vague opinion. Mainly, I'm hoping to share my opinion, with those who have seen it.

I also have other ratings in this thread, where there is no picture at all, in case you're bored, have nothing better to do and would like to comment on how a lack of image does not give the uninitiated an idea about the films. Just go back far enough and you'll find them.

I agree, but not when we're talking about a bunch of skinheads committing hate crimes.

The movie is from 1992.

That's irrelevant.

I thought I was the uninitiated with this title and I was giving my opinion to those that saw it... Mainly, I'm hoping to share my opinion, with those who have seen it.

If your intent is to speak only to those who have seen it, why bother trying to convey a message about its content with that image? If they've seen it, they already know whether or not it appeals to them. If they haven't seen it, that image does nothing to convey what the film is about and so is ineffective either way.

That would be why we get reps in this thread, because people have seen the film you haven't.

I wanted to watch this before I continued with the show. It is brilliant concept and an excellent plot. And while Crichton is a fantastic writer, a lot of the sequences would have been much better described in a book then shown visually. The first two thirds are very good, but the last third slows a bit after the initial melt down.

http://s18.postimg.org/fhmrhldd5/She_Who_Must_Burn_2015.jpg

I've seen HOLY GHOST PEOPLE (2013) & Ti West's THE SACRAMENT (2013) but this is the best one yet that came out in recent times, concentrating on the horror of religious fanaticism.
The story goes like this..."Angela used to work at a local clinic that was shut down after its doctor was shot to death by an anti-abortion protester. Undeterred, Angela decides to run her counseling work at home where she provides basic services - something that puts her at odds with the rest of the anti-abortion protesters, mainly a group of religious fanatics who believes that she is performing abortions. They also believe that she's to blame for recent infant deaths (implied to be due to water pollution), which they see as a sign of God's disapproval. Things are made more tense when Angela helps the wife of the Pastor (the leader of the group) flee an abusive marriage."

It's set on a community that's blinded by religious dogma and slowly unfolds the evil & horror within. Pretty well made & acted with a few disturbing & eerie moments also...particularly found that scene of the birth of a stillborn & the way they buried the baby was quite shocking & one of the saddest moments in the movie. The role of the woman who played the mother of the stillborn and a hardcore religious fanatic - kinda felt like demonically possessed at times.
Overall, quite a dark & disturbing flick from Canada. Really liked it for its character driven, bold & straightforward approach as well as at the same time for its simplicity covering such topic.

Recommended.

I'd like to add that it is not for reporting anything someone simply doesn't like. Only blatant abuses should be reported: clear examples of spam, highly vulgar posts, or clear harassment. Anything that someone isn't 100% sure the mods and I will want to remove should not be reported; instead, please PM one of us about it. Thanks. :)

I haven't even located the report button. I don't expect to have a need for it, but, I do appreciate your efforts to patrol the area.

I agree with MV...

Because discussion is what forums are for.

... which is why I try to respond to almost every post that I'm aware of, which is aimed in my direction, regardless of how pointless a discussion it might lead to.

Well, after Citizen turned it off 15 minutes into the movie, I guess there is no point in waiting for his review. I was trying to hold off and not steal any of his thunder.

I liked the movie, both as a western and a mild horror. It stirred up those 4 star 1987 Predator emotions I remember so well. Good cast, good chats, pretty cool bad guys and a fairly original storyline. If you got 'em, hold on to your stones.

Naked Lunch (1991)

I'm a fan of Cronenberg but this didn't do anything for me. Started off brightly but by the midway point had ran out of steam.

Sorry to hear it don't work for ya, I'm a bit of fan of it myself.

Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice 3.5 I had a MILLION reasons to avoid watching this previously and went in with SERIOUS doubt of liking it; only to come out the other end thinking; "Hmm, that wasn't so bad,"
Still a number of things irked me but on the whole, I just may see this one again.
The reason for watching it? If this was to spawn a Justice League set of films I was curious to see if I should avoid them all together or take a chance. . .

I think I'm going to watch this soon. When I saw it, I was real tired, and I always thought of the cut that Welles wanted - others who saw it said it was much better (much darker humor as well), but he was in Brazil helping the government and the studio edited it themselves. But if YOU like it, I'll give it another chance :)

Mildred Pierce (1945)

From the top 100 noirs list, but only the first 20 felt like a noir to me. During that beginning, we get the usual murder, an apparent frame job, and then a bit of a twist. The rest of the movie goes back in time to show us what led to the event and what would really happen. I liked this movie much more in retrospect, after seeing how it had played out. I thought it was a very well done and mature story with Joan Crawford headlining a terrific cast. The movie kept surprising me, not only with the storyline, but with who was or wasn't decent, and with character's motivations. Directed by Michael Curtiz.

Felt like an honest and realistic attempt at telling a true war story. This movie didn't feel like an excessively grand or ambitious attempt to focus solely on the American heroes, in that typical Hollywood action style. It came across as real. It's long, but doesn't feel long because there is always something interesting going on. The relatively unknown cast suited my tastes well. There are quite a few tense moments and tense situations. I don't know how these guys stayed so cool, with so many unknowns surrounding them, including who is friendly and who is not. Tough situation to be in, especially when the CIA bureaucrats weren't so friendly or helpful, just full of attitude.

I see a lot of bad reviews, and yet, I still liked it. Here is one I share...

13 Hours review: 'fiendishly effective'
Michael Bay's overblown machismo may make liberal stomachs churn, but his true-life Libyan shoot-'em-up is maddeningly effectivehttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/13-hours/review/

I am definitely underrating this movie, and would highly recommend it to fans of rom-coms. A scammer (a fantastic Barbara Stanwyck) targets a man with money (Henry Fonda), and of course they fall in love. The comedy is decent and never gets silly, but I preferred it for the romantic story.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) rating_3+

https://media.giphy.com/media/TGCaXW3uL41K8/giphy.gif

I can't believe I never made an effort to watch this before. This is a quality B-movie. It delivers exactly what it promises, plus a whole lot more. Some bad acting, some good acting, awesome clowns and a lot of fun. The negatives would be a lack of nudity and no R rating, which I would normally expect from this sort of flick. It was still worth checking out.

3.5-

http://www.noticiasenserie.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Cronenberg-021.jpg

I'm a fan of David Cronenberg, although I didn't like his first movie, Shivers. I think that's why it took me so long to see this, his second movie. No need to explain the plot. It's got that perfect 70's look that I love, as well as some fine unintentional humor and a good musical score. It's a fun movie, but also has a touch of a tragic human element like the director's brilliant The Fly. Legendary porn star Marilyn Chambers does a fine job in the lead role.
